#Will Graham: dog expert
acroagoraphobe · 2 months
Note
What pet would Joshua Graham have? Like in his little cave in Zion, would he have a little creature friend?
I can see him having a young gecko that sort of just moved in and refused to leave, like Harry in Death In Paradise, but as you are the Joshua Graham Guy, I need your expert opinion
I was thinking some sort of lizard too!
(He secretly wants a little creature to live with him that hates going outside as much as he does.)
Like one day this little gecko shows up and finds a nice little corner and lays there, Joshuah is like reading to himself and the gecko looks up at him like a dog would and Joshua just squints judgingly at it, and it like blinks it's eyes seperately. And Joshua starts reading bible versesbto it and it actually shows intrest, and it skitters over and sits in front of him and now Joshua is keeping him 100% because this stupid little creature is showing intrest in the bible. He gives it some sort of religious name and feeds it leftovers. So noe he has a little guy who sits around and looks stupid but weirdly cute.

Your Beck and Call by CarnivalMirai [words: 6,343]
Hannibal is naturally like that. Flirty, that is. With everyone. So it’s nothing special when he flirts with Will too, but god, does he know how to make his heart gallop and his face fluster. Will hates how Hannibal has this effect on him without even realizing it. Most people flirt back. But not Will. Will doesn’t want to be one of those people.
Ship of Dreams by StratsWrites, whiskeyandspite [words: 20,134]
Will had no one to wave to. He had no one to see him off. Even so opulently dressed, he had nothing at all to his name but his ability to bear children when the time came. To Will it was a ship carrying him off to the rest of his miserable life.

By Fire, By Thunder by HotMolasses [words: 13,442]
Hannibal and Will are both sent to the same camp for the summer, where they meet and romance blossoms. Then it turns serious. Then they share something much deeper and darker than normal teenagers, and it leads them into the storm that is each other.
Ball Toss by raiast [words: 22,307]
The carnival AU no one asked for. Hannibal accompanies Alana to a carnival and meets one Will Graham, whose game booth is less than above board. Hannibal does not approve.

At The Shops
Tumblr media
Rating: G Chapters: 1
Summary:
After being told by her mum to head to the shops for a few things, Yaz gets a special guest to help her, which makes her consider some things she didn't expect..
Read this story on another platform: Archive of Our Own
“You want me to what?”
Yaz quizzically looked at the note her mother held in front of her. It was indeed what she thought it was. A shopping list, with some items she remembered her dad complaining about not having. She took it from her mother’s hand and read it aloud.
“Milk, eggs, ice cream and chips... Why don’t you just get Sonya to do this?” she continued.
“Because I want you to do it.” Najia said, arms folded.
“Look mum, I just came back from travelling and..”
“That’s exactly why I want you to do it. You missed so much since you’ve been on your travels..”
This got Yaz to quiet down. She was right. She looked over at the calender on the wall and sighed, looking down. It had been two months since her family last saw her, yet it only felt like two weeks for her. She knew that traveling with the Doctor would do that, but seeing it in action didn’t take away the regret.
“Your father and I supported you when you said you were leaving the police force and going traveling to find yourself.” Najia said, putting her hands on Yaz’s shoulders, “All I want is just for you to do this. Is that so hard?...”
Yaz looked up at her before cracking a small smile. “No, no, it’s not. I’ll do it. Be back in a minute.”
She kissed her mum on the cheek and was on her way out of the house when she heard something that did made her stop in her tracks.
“You can even bring that friend of yours that you like. What’s her name?...”
A blush instantly came onto Yaz’s cheeks when she heard it, trying desperately not to show it to her mum. She didn’t even know why she was blushing. They were just friends, weren’t they?
“... It’s the Doctor...”
Nevertheless, she said it and quickly headed out in case she turn around and her mother see it. Najia simply shook her head and smirked. She knew what she saw. Sometimes it takes time to realize it, so she’d wait for Yaz to come to grips with it.
______________________________________________________________
Yaz found herself on the path to a grocery store not too far from them. She could have taken the car, but she wanted some kind of fresh air and a quiet walk. But that stopped once her mind went back to what her mum said. In a way, she was right. Of course she liked the Doctor. She was her best friend. Ever since Graham and Ryan left, they’d had grown closer and closer, gone to amazing places and experienced things she never thought she would ever do in her lifetime. They were practically inseparable, this being one of the rare times they were away from each other (Voluntarily, of course). Yaz had wanted to visit her family for a check in and the Doctor had skipped it this time. She told her she was out looking for a man about a dog. She didn’t know why she’d want a dog in the Tardis, but it was her choice. Yaz would quickly shake her heard of the thoughts and continue walking. She wasn’t that far away anyway, just a few more minutes and.... that’s when she heard it.
It would be an unmistakable sound to anyone, but for her, it felt like home. Problem was, she didn’t want to be at home right now. She just wanted to get the shopping done and get it back to her mum. It wouldn’t take that long. She could just tell the Doctor that she’d be back soon. However, she wouldn’t have to wait to tell her as the place got darker and darker until she realized where she was, inside the Tardis.
“Right. One expert materialization achieved, and you said I couldn’t do it.” The Doctor told the Tardis with a smirk.
The ship beeped in an annoyed but congratulatory tone. The Doctor grabbed her coat off the console, putting on and hopping off the steps as she came down to meet Yaz. They had much to do, and so little time to do it in. Well, it was actually a lot of time, but she wanted to get started as soon as possible.
“So... I was thinking about the second moon of Poosh today. Nothing too spectacular, but still enjoyable.”
“Doctor..” Yaz tried to interject, but the Doctor kept going as she strode around the Tardis.
“Maybe after that, a quick jaunt to Ancient Greece. I still owe Socrates 5 quid for the card game, actually. Hopefully, he knew I’d pay him back, eventually”
“Doctor...”
“Then after that, probably a trip forward to the year 3000. I heard about it in that song. Trust me, it’s much different from that...”
“Doctor!” Yaz finally shouted, getting her attention.
The Doctor stopped talking and watched Yaz with a tiny confused expression on her face.
“What?”
Yaz tried to be serious but she couldn’t not break into a smile seeing the Doctor’s face. She was so cute when she was like that, honestly. Kinda like a puppy who got told off. It was super sweet to be honest and she...
“Yaz!”
The Doctor’s call brought her back into the current reality.
“Huh? Sorry, yeah. Can’t go anywhere right now.”
“Why not? Is everything ok? Are you ok?”
The Doctor walked up to her and got close to her face, worried and wondering why Yaz would turn it down. It took all of Yaz’s strength to not break out in a goofy smile and for her cheeks to not turn red as a strawberry. But she held firm and locked eyes with the Doctor.
“It’s fine. I’m fine. My mum just wants me to get something at the shop for her. It’s nothing to worry about.”
She took out the list, which the Doctor promptly grabbed and read as she walked to the console.
“Oh! Well, this is no big deal. Tardis has plenty of this here. I’ll get it for you in no time.”
“No!” Yaz shouted once again, as the Doctor stopped and watched her.
“I mean, no. Dad is just really particular about what brands we get. It’s just a few minutes, 10 tops. Then we can do whatever we want together.”
The proposition put a smile on the Doctor’s face, but it soon turned to curiosity and an idea emerged.
“Hey, why don’t we go together?”
“Together?..”
“Yeah! I don’t really have much I wanna do right now anyway, and it would be fun.”
“I don’t know...”
“Come on... Please..?”
The puppy analogy came back strongly as the Doctor’s face seemed to turn completely into a puppy dog’s pout and no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t reject that face at all.
“Fine... But under one condition.”
“Anything. You name it.”
“We do this the normal way. We walk to the store and we purchase things normally. No sonic, no psychic paper.”
“But..”
“Ah ah... promise me.”
“... I promise.” The Doctor said as a smile appeared on her face.
She quickly walked down to Yaz and snapped her fingers, opening the Tardis doors.
“Lead the way.”
Yaz matched the smile and walked out first as the Doctor followed closely behind.
______________________________________________________________
“First on the agenda, then?” The Doctor said to Yaz, the latter turning towards her after checking her emails on her phone.
The Timelord was currently in possession of a small cart, ready and willing to pick up items.
“We didn’t need a cart. A basket would be fine.”
“You never know how much stuff you might get. Plus, I really just wanted to use one of these...” she said, smirking.
Yaz could only shake her head and smile. She was like a kid sometimes, the Doctor.
“Sure, why not? Umm, might as well go in order.”
Once they arrived in the requisite aisle, Yaz’s eyes scanned for the desired brand of milk they enjoyed at home, with little success.
“What you looking for?”
“A specific brand of milk. It’s usually around in this section. Normally, they always have it in stock unless they...”
Yaz looked up and saw exactly what she wanted, except that it was on the top shelf and she was, what her father had termed, vertically challenged.
“Ah.”
The Doctor came from behind the cart and stood next to her as the two examined the situation. Neither were tall enough to reach it and they were the only two in the aisle, so no one to call for help. Yaz was deep in thought until she spotted a look in the Doctor’s eyes, one she knew brought trouble and would bring more trouble here.
“.. What are you thinking?...”
“The shelves have a little space on each of them. Maybe if I’m quick and smooth enough, I can climb them, get the milk and drop down.”
“Doctor, no, you can’t do that here.” Yaz said, trying to convince her not to, but the Doctor’s mind was made up.
“Come on, it will be quick.” She said as she went up onto the first shelf.
“I was taught by some of the most well known Peking opera actors on how to be graceful with my steps.”
And much to Yaz’s surprise, she was doing well with the climb and had even grabbed the milk. But someone on the other side decided they didn’t want something and pushed it back into the shelf, which pushed everything else forward, removing the space for the Doctor to step on. The Doctor tried to grab onto something, but with the space for that leg to hold on to gone, she felt as if was only a matter of time. Yaz had to act quickly. She ran around to the back of the cart and pushed it forward, right as the Doctor fell. The landing wasn’t the smoothest, but the Doctor was in the cart, milk in hand.
“You ok?” Yaz asked, giving her a hand.
“Rough landing, but I've had much worse,” she responded as she held up the milk for Yaz with a smirk, “Told you I could do it”
Yaz could only laugh as she pulled her out, the Doctor resting the milk in the cart.
“Idiot. Let’s get the other stuff now.” ______________________________________________________________
At the cashier, Yaz had checked off all the items on the list, including some stuff for herself and was about to stuff the note back into her pocket when she saw some things placed into the cart, with a cheeky Doctor smiling at her. Yaz picked them up and wasn’t as enthused as the Doctor had hoped.
“Fish fingers and... custard?”
“Trust me, it’s amazing.”
Yaz shook her head as she began placing the items onto the conveyor belt. By the time the cashier had finished and Yaz went to take the cash out of her wallet, she could see the Doctor’s arm extended. The Timelord had given the young man a credit card, much to Yaz’s bewilderment.
“... Since when did you have a credit card?”
“Oh this? For years now. Got it as part of UNIT. I just never really had to pay for anything usually.”
“You mean you could have paid for those fish and chips yourself last week?…” Yaz told her, arms folded.
“In my defense, it’s deep down in my pockets and those are near bottomless.”
“Next time you’re paying again...” she told her, rolling her eyes.
Eventually all the items were in their bags and in the hands of the Doctor and Yaz, but they were stopped by the words of the cashier as they were about to leave.
“It’s funny. You two are the second couple I saw arguing about who’s paying today.”
“Oh no we’re not..”
“We’re not...”
The two women sheepishly looked at each other before they slowly walked out of the building, leaving the cashier confused before he attended to the next person. ______________________________________________________________
As the two walked back to the Khan family home, Yaz would (subtly and unsubtly) take a few glances at the Doctor. She couldn’t particularly help it, it was out of mostly... shock. The Doctor was someone who constantly wanted to head out and do everything and anything. Always on the move. So the fact that she even volunteered to do this with her was amazing. Sure, having tea with her family is one thing, but shopping was boring and particularly domestic, and that wasn’t really what the Doctor did a lot. But... she did do it for her, and even took a mini bump in the process. It was all really sweet and very admirable.
“Doctor?..”
“Yeah?...”
“Thanks.. for, you know, coming along and helping out.”
“Oh.. Well, that was nothing. Any chance to spend time with you is great.”
Once the Doctor realized she said that, her face flushed red, and she looked away, which Yaz might have seen if she hadn’t done the same. That was... something. She didn’t expect to hear that at all. She kinda expected it based on how often they were spending time together recently, but hearing her actually say it though?.... Was it too cliche to say her heart fluttered? It was all she could really describe it as. As she took one more glance at the Doctor again, that word uttered by that cashier came back to mind..
Couple
Yaz denied it, of course, because they weren’t, but.... would it be so bad if they were one day?....:

Source: Adobe/kellyvandellen Sebastien Laye is a French-American crypto-economist and business owner in the monetary services and realty sector. __________ In the consequences of the 1929 crash in stocks and bonds, following a once-in-a-generation injury, occurred an entire brand-new school of monetary analysis that would bloom out 50 years later on. In hindsight, one can state that monetary analysis got up of the ashes of monetary markets in the 1930 s, prior to being used by individuals that became referred to as quantitative experts then security experts. We owed it to a handful of minds, primarily amongst them Benjamin Graham and David Dodd with their critical work Security Analysis and later on The Intelligent Investor by Graham, leading the Value Approach (promoted by Warren Buffett and most funds today). Individuals meticulously discovered the art (and not science) of valuing securities and focusing on the basics of services or financial forces underpinning the monetary items they had actually been serendipitously purchasing up until now. It did not eliminate the opportunities of undervaluation, overvaluation, crashes, trends, and manias, however it definitely restricted them compared to the void of the 1920-1930 s. The evasive crypto-universe has actually been deeply insulated from the Value Approach given that its beginning, partially by absence of understanding of its methods (most quants or tech individuals are not trained in Value Analysis) and partially since of the big-headed posture that "this time is various" connected to cryptos. Some cryptos or tokens are securities, and others are more detailed to products or currencies to which components of basic analysis and worth investing (like "purchasing listed below the intrinsic worth") can be used. The blockchain-crypto market requires a Graham and Dodd minute if it is to reconquer the heart of financiers (and encourage expert financiers) after the current 2 trillion USD ordeal. From the Prysm Group(dealing with Wharton) to Arca, there are individuals investing considerable mental capacity, time, and resources into the matter. From my viewpoint of view in between Paris and New York, I see brand-new axioms to give the market. Securities evaluation never ever declares to be a science with a conclusive response: it is more comparable to an Art, with a various variety of worths, level of sensitivity analyses, and situations, in order to determine a specific intrinsic worth listed below which purchasing the security is intriguing (undervaluation), and above which offering the security is a chance (overvaluation). The problem for crypto or token depend on the differing or hybrid nature of the token: in some cases a security, in some cases an energy token, it can integrate components of both. It is often as evasive as the Schrodinger feline in quantum physics. As an outcome, the basic analysis procedure in the crypto universe should begin with the decision of the nature of the token. Tokens are frequently simply another part of the capital structure for business. If equity represents on a claim on revenues after financial obligation service or capital, and bonds a claim on properties, tokens are generally a claim on a platform consumers or use development, or intangibles. They are a method of satisfying stakeholders and consumers, however in fine are underpinned by company basics. Only a couple of cryptos, such as bitcoin (BTC), are better in nature to a currency or a product (in the United States, the product guard dog is poised to control cryptos and not the Securities Exchange Commission(SEC)). Many tokens are the 3rd part of the capital stack for a company. When a token can be explained (in some cases lawfully certifying as such) as a security token, it is a proxy on an organization, with a token issuance utilized as early equity capital fundraising. Because case, all aspects of the conventional reduced money streams analysis can be used. A token can then be valued as the fractional part of a company, based upon item market fit and capital.
In addition to reduced capital (DCF)( where the discount rate will be an investor obstacle rate), equivalent (peers) can be utilized based upon a number of metrics: here, just the sagacity of the expert can specify the comparable to the price-to-earnings (PE) or price-to-book ratios utilized for stocks. Often, the modifications are very little. I will point out a few of them. A pure price-to-earnings ratio exists just when the crypto has a mining system: one can then calculate the marketplace worth of the token relative to miners' incomes. For the most part, the Network Value to Transactions (NVT) ratio is more pertinent: it compares the marketplace worth to deal volumes. In addition to an essential method, it likewise values the token based upon an use or energy worth or as a cash. The exact same can be stated of the Price-to-Metcalfe ratio, comparing the marketplace worth to the variety of addresses. The equivalent of the dividend yield utilized to compare yield stocks will be skating systems, while the stock buyback equivalent is the token burn. Each token has its own metric, and you require to find out inputs and run level of sensitivity analysis about what is taking place within the network: inputs and level of sensitivity analysis are substantially more vital than the rate target itself. In the lack of procedure incomes, the net supply burn is the very best gauge of totally free capital. In decentralized financing ( DeFi) (with overall worth locked) and video gaming, the profits projection is the easiest tool to task future development and discount rate it back to today. Under the typical regard to energy tokens, there are, in truth, pass-through tokens (tokens that give to their holders profits, benefits, or network advantages) and asset-backed tokens (obtaining their worth from a security that can be established). The circumstance is more intricate for currency tokens, or circulating medium, such as bitcoin. The only popular assessment method here has actually been the Quantitative Theory of Money: it is however a simple indication in our viewpoint, albeit flawed: long deserted by financial experts, it has 2 endogenous variables that make any appraisal workout challenging. We have actually been more effective for currency tokens in utilizing a Price to Utility Ratio (see research study from Liu and Zhang), where the Utility is specified as follows: Token Utility (U)= (token speed staking ratio)/( rate volatility water down rate) It integrates all energies a crypto supplies as a currency i.e. a shop of worth, a system of account, and a legal tender, and values the crypto as a token or currency for a mini-Nation or closed financial system. Investment Analysis and Valuation, with a worth or a development technique, independent or combined with technical analysis, is still in its infancy in the crypto market. If we wish to put behind us the disorderly volatility of these brand-new monetary instruments, we need to rise to the difficulty and establish the analytical tools and structures developed for stocks more than eighty years back. ____ Read More

In the summer of 2011, psychiatrist and FBI consultant Dr. Hannibal Lecter travels with a crack forensic team to the murder capital of America to assist the New Orleans field office in hunting a possible serial killer. But bodies aren't the most interesting thing he finds when the water starts to rise.
Or, what would have happened if Will never left Louisiana?
Chapter 9 is up!
"Am I to be your victim, then?" Hannibal asks her, holding his arms out for access as he catches her intent. This is much better than if he had volunteered the information himself.
"Yeah, I'm gonna get ya," Beverly says cheerfully. She takes hold of his left arm with her left hand and reaches under his right arm with hers. The movement brings her slim body flush against his back, and the smell of her apricot shampoo to his nose. "Knife in," she says, poking him with the butt end of a ballpoint pen some four inches left of his navel. "Up and over." She drags the pen up until it nudges his ribs on the opposite side.
Brian scratches his beard as he watches them. "That's pretty intimate."
"And then guts everywhere. Slow painful death, shallow grave, alligators eat your face."
Or, what’s been eating John Doe?

This is a Louisiana black bear. Please note: She smol.
There are bears in parts of South Louisiana and one or two spots in western Mississippi. Most Louisiana black bears are in the Atchafalaya parishes where this fic is mostly set. There is some argument over whether they are a true subspecies, but they are definitely not like the bears in the rest of the country. They are small, meek and slender, without the thick undercoats and padding that black bears have in colder places, and their faces are long and pointy. They are also often brown instead of black. From my limited experience with wild bears they are weirdly dainty eaters and are terrified of cats.
The Louisiana black bear was removed from the threatened list this year. They were disappearing due to habitat lost, but conservation and reforestation efforts have been pretty successful. I am (literally and figuratively) wearing my Black Bear Conservation Commission t-shirt today.
Please look at these good good swamp bears.

Creole Cream Cheese, mentioned briefly in Hannibal’s breakfast, is sort of in between crème fraîche and cream cheese, but with less fat. It’s a truly regional food that almost went extinct in the last few decades as local dairies and markets were replaced by huge national companies. When I was a kid you could get it at every regional supermarket and drug store, and then all those local chains got bought out by national ones too, and not only could I not find creole cream cheese ice cream at my K&B, I couldn’t even find a K&B. And then everybody turned into foodies, and it became cool to make cheese at home and to serve local dairy at your fancy restaurant and shop at local markets, and now it’s back! But if I’d known how easy it was to make back then, I never would have had to go without because it is as easy to make as jello or something.
Creole Cream Cheese
2 gallons of skim milk
1 pint buttermilk
1/2 tsp liquid rennet or 1/2 rennet tablet
(no really that’s it)
some cream or half and half, optional
This recipe requires the following fancy specialized equipment: a big pot, a thermometer, and some empty plastic food containers. Like old pint yogurt or sour cream containers. Very fancy.
Mix everything in a big pot and heat to 80 ° F while stirring. Keep it there a few minutes then turn off the heat. Cover tightly and leave out at room temperature for about 3 hours. At that point you can drain the whey and pack the cheese in smaller containers. I recommend you pour a little cream or half and half on top before putting it away.
This is really good with fruit, especially sweetened with sugar or honey, or spread on toast with preserves or salt and pepper. Or you can do my favorite thing and eat it with crackers or raw zucchini and radish slices and pepper jelly.
Or you can make really good ice cream out of it and eat it with strawberries, or use it for anything you’d use cream cheese or maybe even ricotta for, like a cheesecake.

"LOOK, FINAL MATCH of the year. if we don't win, you lot are absolute dog shite." y/n warned, semi jokingly and semi seriously to her team.
"yes captain," groans and mumbles erupted from the hurdle the seven members were currently in.
"oh come off it, i want determination." y/n frowned.
"against slytherin today, you'll be alright?" terry asked.
"against slytherin today, you'll be alright?" terry asked.
"against slytherin today, you'll be alright?" terry asked.
terry was y/n's best friend. he was the only one who knew about theodore and what happened between the two of them.
y/n told terry in confidence and trusted him with the secret.
"yea, i will. plus i'm quite furious at him so it wouldn't hurt to kick his arse," the girl shrugged as she gripped onto her broomstick tightly.
"kick his arse we shall." terry grinned as they exited the tent.
"captains, shake hands," madam hooch instructed.
graham montague stuck his hand out to y/n which she hesitantly took.
"still as sexy as ever y/l/n," he smirked.
theodore, who was standing just next to graham, felt like he could punch graham in the face for saying such a thing to his girl. but seeing as how he was still not on y/n's nice side, he let out an angry breath he did not know he was holding and bit the inside of the cheek.
"oh fuck off you minging bastard." the girl scowled.
madam hooch released the snitch, the quaffle and the bludgers.
she blew her whistle and the match began.
y/n kicked off her broom and began to look for the golden flying metal.
she was the team’s seeker, an expert one at that. she was determined to bring her house to victory.
ravenclaw had a rather good run throughout the school year. as long as they won this match, they would win the house cup.
y/n spent her time half watching over her team to give them any directions or instructions, and the other looking for the snitch.
almost an hour past and y/n was exhausted. luckily none of her teammates had experienced any casualties and she heard parvati announce ravenclaw was sadly 10 points behind slytherin.
y/n let out a frustrated groan as she eyed the blue sky, trying to heighten her senses to either see or hear the snitch.
that was when she noticed the fluttering of the snitch a few hundred meters away from her.
she looked down and saw that draco had not spotted.
y/n started surging towards the snitch while parvati commentated on it.
that caused draco to go after the snitch as well, him hot on the girl’s tail.
y/n could practically feel the snitch on the pad of her fingertips and could almost catch it in her palm when she felt a sharp pain on the side of her torso.
the force of the bludger that had hit her pushed her off her broom and the girl started falling hundreds of metres.
luckily, professor flitwick managed to charm her fall to slow down, but that did not manage to dampen the impact of y/n and the floor.
the moment theodore saw y/n fly off her broom, he started speeding towards her, in hopes of catching her.
he was too late however and a bone crushing sound came as y/n landed onto the grassy quidditch pitch.
theodore jumped off his broom and he kneeled next to y/n’s unconscious body, in full tears.
“move aside mr nott,” madam pomfrey pushed the boy aside to try and aid the girl momentarily before transporting her to the hospital wing.
theodore refused and continued holding y/n.
terry saw this and tapped his shoulder, “oi, if you don’t move, madam pomfrey can’t help her.”
theodore nodded as he hesitantly let go, his trembling body stepping away as he watched madam pomfrey chant incantations.
a sudden realisation flashed theodore and he turned around, stomping to where the rest of his team members were standing.
“who the fuck threw that bludger?” theodore practically shouted, his attention on the two slytherin beaters, crabbe and goyle.
“she was about to get the snitch. and stop shouting, madam hooch will hear and we’d get disqualified,” vincent said in a hushed whisper.
“you absolute fucking cunt,” theodore lurched forward and knocked vincent with a right hook, causing the boy to fall backwards.
“mate? what the fuck was that for? why’d you care so much about that slag anyway?” vincent held onto his broken bloody nose.
that infuriated theodore more and he continued his rampage, his fist colliding with crabbe’s face over and over again.
by now, the commotion was causing a scene and people were starting to crowd around.
terry decided that since none of the slytherins were butting in to try and stop it, he had to do his best friend a favour and stop theodore.
terry, being a rather fit boy, easily pulled theodore by his arm onto his feet.
“brother, stop it. they're bringing y/n to the hospital wing, quit fucking around." terry scolded.
theodore wiped the bit of blood from his cut lip, that formed when crabbe had tried to fight back, with his thumb.
"do not ever speak of my girlfriend like that. or that will be the last thing you ever fucking say." theodore spat with a menacing glare as the slytherins who crowded around him started whispering.
theodore had just outed his relationship, well, past relationship, to basically the entirety of his house.
and yet, that was the last thing on the slytherin boy's mind.
he followed after terry as hagrid carried the passed out y/n back into the castle.
theodore chewed on the back of his thumb nervously as he paced back and forth. he had just finished his, about what, fifth breakdown?
"mate, i'm getting dizzy." terry leaned against the brick wall of the school corridor, "she'll be alright."
"i regret it so fucking much. i regret ever putting my stupid house above her. i love her so much." theodore ran his hands through his hair.
it had been hours and the two boys had changed out of their quidditch uniforms.
"she still love you, d'you know. sure she's fuming, but she still loves you. going on a break was the toughest decision she's had to ever make. she pretends like she's alright but the poor girl's hurting. she hasn't eaten a proper meal in ages! she's skin and bones!"
theodore felt like he wanted to throw himself off the astronomy tower from the guilt. his heart sinking to his gut. he had hurt the one girl he had swore he would never.
the double doors to the hospital wing opened and madam pomfrey greeted the two boys.
"is she okay? will she be alright?" theodore bombarded the matron with questions.
"i managed to heal all her broken bones but she's under calming draught and resting. she can accept visitors but keep your volume down."
theodore pushed past madam pomfrey and saw y/n lying in a cot.
her face was almost as pale as draco malfoy's and tucked under a thin sheet. her hair messily sprawled out on her pillow.
he settled onto the wooden chair next to y/n, and held her cold hand in his.
terry stayed for a bit before returning to his own dorm.
theodore however, had managed to slip past madam pomfrey when she did her last nightly rounds and stayed overnight, in the uncomfortable backless chair, his head resting on the mattress of y/n's cot.
when y/n began to stir awake the next morning, theodore's jolted up from the movement under him.
"merlin y/n, you scared the absolute hell out of me." he rasped, "i was absolutely worried sick."
"i'm sorry, i'm sorry about what i said that day. i'm sorry for being a down right git and ever thinking my house was ever more important than you. i was so wrong. you're the single and only thing i care about in my darn stupid life."
"theo-"
"no, y/n. i'm sorry. please. take me back. i'd do anything please. i love you so fucking much, and i hate myself for ever putting our relationship on the line. please y/n."
"theo-"
"please. i fucking hate crabbe for landing you here and honestly i felt like i could've hexed that son of a bitch. i love you so much darling, i don't think i can or will ever love someone as much as i love you."
by now theodore was sobbing once again, his tear ducts never having been this active since he witnessed his mother's death.
"theo, baby," y/n wiped his eyes with her hand, "i forgive you and i love you. but you've been laying on my arm all night and it's gone all numb." she chuckled.
"oh, shit, sorry." theodore removed his arm from her.
"no more slytherin bullshit i promise. i'd proudly admit to the whole wizarding world that my girlfriend is the prettiest and most brilliant girl in ravenclaw." he assured.
"just ravenclaw?" y/n teased.
"in the whole bloody universe!"
"atta boy, c'mere i missed your kisses."
y/n did not need to say twice for theodore to smash his lips with y/n's, pulling her into an endearing kiss.

Autism & Stereotype
So i’m absolutely not an expert on this subject, but I am autistic myself and have recently been diagnosed as of Nov 2020. I’ve been thinking about this subject a lot recently, and I really just wanted a place to discuss my thoughts.
I never thought I was autistic.
Sure, I learnt about autism in school when my (year 9?) class had to read about an autistic character in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, but I never related particularly strongly to the book.
I understood the character’s dislike of social settings and how he’d rather avoid talking to people, and the dislike of physical touch, and even then it flagged with me that this book was (up until Jasper Jones) the only English assigned school book I’d ever bothered to read the whole way through, but it didn’t flag enough for me to look any further.
I didn’t relate to a lot of the canonically autistic characters in the media; the Sheldon Cooper’s & Good Doctors. I didn’t have hyper-fixations on things like math or science or trains, I did understand sarcasm and I (usually) got jokes.
But the kind of characters I did relate to?
Hermione Granger & Luna Lovegood & Newt Scammander & Tony Stark & Peter Parker & MJ & Batman & Katniss Everdeen & Will Graham & Amy Santiago & Castiel & all these other characters that, since receiving my diagnosis, I’ve seen arguments for them being (possibly) on the spectrum.
When I used to read Harry Potter aloud to my dad, he would always comment on how I would literally talk just like Emma Watson. I had a phase where I tried to dress like Luna Lovegood.
Tony Stark is so tied up and in-tangled with my own personality I literally don’t know where he starts and I finish anymore; when he died on screen I was inconsolable for weeks and had, at the time, no way of understanding or communicating why his death was so personal but I was grieving an actual part of myself.
Something I’ve come to see in the media & its representation of autistic folk is how often the characters that are actually intended to be autistic often fall flat into stereotypes.
It’s often the characters that aren’t written as autistic that we latch onto strongest. Why though?
Because those characters aren’t approached as “autistic”, they’re approached as “humans”, and that’s what we all are primarily: humans.
As a writer myself who loves character creation, so often I steal little personality traits from my friends and family, and from myself. It is, as so many authors have said before, the best and strongest way to make interesting characters that feel real. Giving them traits you see in real people is the best way to ground characters in actual reality.
So, when you have an author sitting down to write a character - they look to those strangers & familiar around them. And you know what, in a world where so many neurodivergent people go undiagnosed (especially those AFAB), sometimes a writer might pick up traits from an undiagnosed person.
That’s why the non-canonical autistic characters end up feeling so much more diverse and unique, and why they often accidentally end up registering with the less common or understood or even known traits of autism: because their treated as humans first, not stereotypes and simple trait breakdown on an autism diagnosis website.
Hermione is bossy and can come across as rude when she’s trying so hard to socialise and make friends (”I’m Hermione Granger. And, you are?”). She turns to books and quiet spaces like the library, feels such a strong pressure to succeed academically because she’s less strong socially. She is incredibly loyal to her few friends she has made, and stays out of Ron & Harry’s fights as much as possible (”I’m not an owl!” “Boys.”). She swings between being under-empathetic (i.e. struggling to understand Harry doesn’t want to talk about Sirius’ death so soon) & hyper-empathetic (i.e. Cho Chang, “just because you’ve got the emotional range of a teaspoon”).
Luna Lovegood is unique and one-of-a-kind, and faces quite intense bullying at time from her peers in Ravenclaw. She doesn’t conform to normal fashion expectations and, similar to Hermione in some ways, is often seen with her nose in some edition of the Quibbler. She loves her weird creatures and even spends time with the Thestrals, preferring animals over humans. She misses social cues and jokes, even those made at her expense (or, perhaps, she ignores them). She also has, often, the same facial expressions.
Newt Scammander avoids eye contact, usually only making it for a brief second before glancing away, usually to stare over someone’s shoulder. He is awkward with physical touch and often blunt about his social skills (”most people find me annoying”). He prefers the company of animals over humans, and hyperfixates on them intensely. He has little regard for people thinking he is strange or odd. Sometimes he even blinks excessively, something I’ve done since childhood (it worried my mother so much she took me to an optometrist. I now know it’s a stim).
Tony Stark had a weird thing about not being handed stuff, which I don’t know about any other autistic people, but that’s actually something I hate myself. He blasts loud music in his lab because it’s a loud noise under his control. He rambles and talks about whatever he wants/is interested in, with little regard for if anyone else is keeping up with what he’s saying (this got noted in my diagnostic report, myself). Not to mention his significant intelligence and sometimes black & white sense of justice (”suit of armour around the world”). He struggles to communicate his emotions and often masks his emotional distress beneath wit & humour. He can also be quick to forgive (i.e. “thank god I’m here”), even to those it seems only a short time before he was furious with, because he doesn’t have much luck elsewhere with friends (also fixing Fury’s display to better suit is one eye).
Peter Parker (and yes I know this is from the spiderbite but it stills strikes a chord with many) suffers from sensory overload, but he also has a very black & white sense of justice (”I don’t want to kill anybody” “if you can do the things that I can, and you don’t, and then the bad things happen...”). He misses social cues (”I’m just grabbing the door for you”) and hyperfixates on topics of interest like science & sci-fi & lego, and so much of his communication style is quotes and references and interest topics, something we also see with Tony (”Point Break”, “you ever seen this really old movie Aliens?” “i don’t want another single pop-culture reference out of you for the rest of this trip” “I don’t know I didn’t carbon-date him”), which is, funnily enough, exactly the style of communication my autistic father and I have with each other, communicating primarily through Douglas Adams quotes.
MJ self-admittedly “doesn’t have much luck... getting close to people”, she is blunt and doesn’t give much thought to what other people think of her (”but you’re also at this party?” “Am I?”). She can come across perhaps to some as rude (”you guys are losers”). She has weird interests (black dahlia, “i read it was secretly built as a mind control tower... which is why it’s my favourite destination on the whole trip”), and as an autistic person dating another autistic person Peter getting her a Black Dahlia necklace was accurate and adorable.
Batman is a character I saw quite an interesting argument for a while ago, so forgive me if I’m forgetful on the details. But, someone was arguing the alter-ego of Batman or, more accurately, his false identity as ‘playboy’ ‘himbo’ Bruce Wayne is the alter-ego, a mask to appear how people expect him to be. He prefers dark spaces & has the weird attachment to bats, and a black & white no-killing!!! sense of justice (which the DC movies :( seem to have forgotten). He is intelligent but intensely private & loyal.
Katniss Everdeen is one I related to myself. She struggles to connect with her mother in any meaningful way and can often be quite blunt with her (”you can’t [disappear] like you did with dad”), but has a very strong connection with Primrose. She prefers being out in the forest hunting, where it is simple and quiet. Some complain she was too “bland” and a typical “YA main character” but I always thought she was really quite interesting? Her hunting skills don’t come out of no where, she clearly practices and it’s a connection to her dad, it’s a soothing and somewhat repetitive activity to lose herself in. She’s quiet and reserved around strangers except for anger (i.e. first meeting Haymitch), but she’s looser and funnier with i.e. Gale (mocking Effie in the first book). She’s able to mask and act (rather awkwardly, I’ll admit, but not every autistic person is good at masking) in front of the camera, and jokes she does make with Caesar Flickerman that get a laugh from the audience seem to surprise her.
Will Graham is a character commonly thought of as autistic. He also has an aversion to eye contact, saying it’s “distracting”, but seems to love (a bit reluctantly) physical touch, especially from those he cares about (perhaps to a fault - loyalty to toxic relationships is often seen in autistic women in particular), and is a unique case of hyper-empathy, which we so often don’t see in autistic characters. He loves his dogs and doesn’t react well to people who try and analyse him like some kind of science project. He’s funny but blunt and can come across as intense.
Amy Santiago tries her hardest in both her job & with her coworkers, and often comes across as a little too earnest and maybe a bit awkward. She’s detail orientated and loves her organisational folders, and an absolute stickler for the rules, but she’s driven sometimes to the point of stubbornness. She’s a bit of a perfectionist and sometimes gets made fun of by the other characters for her “goody-two-shoes” attitude. She doesn’t handle change and become anxious when she can’t plan properly.
Castiel “didn’t understand that reference.” When he first meets the Winchester’s he’s a bit uptight and struggles to understand and relate to human emotions. He’s clueless to human media and struggles to keep up with Dean’s constant references, but tried to connect with him in the ways he can (”it’s funnier in enochian”). He misses social cues (”what’s the word, Cas?” “a shortened version of my name.”) He can be a bit naive and easily driven, i.e. making a deal with Crowley, but intensely loyal to the Winchesters despite their often lacklustre treatment of him. He doesn’t make a lot of facial expression, and often mimics Dean, and, of course, “dude, we talked about this... personal space?”
All of these characters show various symptoms & behaviours, at least ones that are familiar to my experience with my autism, and I find it interesting the characters I used to mask and create fake identifies to hide my behaviours as a kid were all characters I shared traits with.
These are just a few characters I could talk about - and please don’t be upset if you disagree or didn’t see your head-cannoned character here, I haven’t watched every single piece of media ever and am still learning about this community myself :)

The Sommelier (Hannibal x Female!Reader) pt. 2
Since the police department let the youth pastor get away, the FBI has to step in. Will suspects something is off, but nobody listens. @deadman-inc-bikeshop this one’s for you, comrade
Trigger warnings: discussion of substance abuse, drug use, blood, graphic descriptions of violence, Christianity
Will had become somewhat of an expert at tuning out background noise. The shuttering of camera lenses, the blasting of sirens and of course all the talking. The dissemination of information between parties; some relevant, and some just noise.
Another inept local police department let a killer get away. That put the onus on the FBI to clean up the mess. With a restaurant full of witnesses, Will doubted his usefulness to this particular investigation. Surely, they could get a more thorough description of the killer from eyewitness testimony. He thought maybe Crawford was getting too comfortable with his secret weapon.
But Crawford wouldn’t have let Will get involved if he had any doubts that this one would kill again. And he was determined to throw every weapon in his arsenal at this case before it happened. The blood wasn’t even dry yet. This was as much of a head start as they could hope for.
So, whether he felt it necessary or not, Will Graham sat at the corner booth, stone still, while the investigation progressed around him.
He put the scene in backwards motion. No police, no media, not a drop of blood in sight.
This is the day the lord has made. Rejoice, rejoice, hallelujah.
The restaurant was packed from corner to corner with bodies and sin. People, sinners, who didn’t deserve to have Christ’s name on their lips, let alone blood on their hands. Sinners who wore cross necklaces, but couldn’t carry a cross.
Today I will save lives. This is God's design.
The waitress approached. Asked for a drink order.
My grip on reality is still firm enough to initiate worldly conversation, so long as it is in the pursuit of rescuing souls.
She was visibly uncomfortable. Not willing to engage in conversation.
My patience is dwindling. I must heighten my senses.
He placed a bit of cocaine under his nose. The clarity hit him all at once with a glance at the specials menu.
It's a sign. The lamb of god must be avenged.
He gave the waitress one last chance. If she had repented right then and there, perhaps those people would still be alive today.
With that small display of empathy, Will was ripped from his trance and brought back to reality. He took off his glasses and pressed his fingers to his forehead.
"Welcome back." Jack greeted, dryly.
Will stood up. "I really should have paid more attention in Sunday school."
"Well, how about you tell me what you can." Jack answered. "See if I can fill in the blanks."
"Okay, first of all," Will sighed, trying to collect his thoughts. "This man is deeply deluded."
"Forensics already found trace amounts of cocaine on the table." Jack agreed with a nod.
"No, see-" Will stopped him. "This is a deep-rooted, purposeful delusion. The drugs feed the delusion, not the other way around."
"And what is this delusion?"
Will took a deep breath in. "This guy believes he's some kind of divinely-ordained morality police. And the waitress was the catalyst for this spree killing."
"So, what did she do that was so egregious?" Jack folded his arms. "Have a small tattoo? Wear her apron too tight?"
"She was working on the Sabbath." Will said.
“So he’s a literalist.” Jack inferred. “Realism and practicality be damned. Hard drugs will do that to you.”
Will was starting to grow annoyed. “Pretend for a minute that he wasn’t high.”
“That’s a pretty tall order.” Beverly interrupted from across the room. “Turns out his coke was as pure as it gets outside of the rainforests of Colombia. Might as well have snorted a leaf right from the tree.”
Jack turned to face Beverly, who was scraping under the fingernails of a body. “Sounds expensive.”
“Well, that eliminates one suspect.” Will commented under his breath. “The FBI only deals the cheap stuff.”
Jack’s face hardened. “Something to add, Will?”
“Yes, actually.” Will tilted his head. “Are we here for the murder, or the drugs?"
"What does it matter?"
That was most assuredly not an answer.
"Do we want this guy in prison?" Will adjusted his oversized coat. "Or are we going to grant him impunity for telling us where he got this particular brand of powdered sugar?”
Jack heaved a frustrated sigh. "We're not in any position to refuse information about a potential drug trafficking ring. If that means amnesty--"
"So if this is a drug bust, why do you need me?" Will cut in.
"Where is this coming from?" Jack protested. “If you have a problem with this investigation, you’re free to leave.”
If that was a bluff, Will called it. He walked out. Jack clearly wouldn't listen to him, so he was off to the person he knew would.
He almost regretted that decision when the esteemed Dr. Lecter took it as an opportunity to dissect him. Any chance Hannibal got to put him under a microscope, he took. A part of him knew that and another, subtler part liked it.
"Federal intelligence agencies and cocaine have a complicated history." Hannibal said as simply as if he were describing a married couple. "It's not something I would imagine Crawford likes to bring up."
"And now he's trying to absolve himself." Will leaned forward in his chair and rested his arms on his knees. "Trying to put the FBI back on the right side of history."
"So why did you walk out?" Hannibal raised an eyebrow.
"I'm a profiler, not a drug-sniffing bloodhound." Will shot up from his seat. "I made my analysis and he dismissed it out of hand."
"So this is a matter of pride." Hannibal concluded.
"You could say that." Will mumbled. "Some would call it self-respect."
"You are not one to talk about self-respect." Hannibal smirked. "Especially not with a jacket covered in dog hair."
“What if there was a way to turn this investigation around?" Will offered, electing to ignore the snide commentary.
“You’d have to find some way to prove that he would have struck with or without the cocaine.” Hannibal tented his hands in his lap. “Re-center his motivation.”
“His motivation was justice,” Will said. “Or at least some perverted, fundamentalist Christian notion of justice.”
Hannibal gazed admiringly at Will, as if watching the gears turn in his head. “You and I know this, but how do we go about proving it?”
Will dropped his shoulders. “We’d have to find the man first.”
Hannibal glanced down at his phone and punched an address into the search engine. He made a small, but noticeable gesture that caught Will’s attention.
“I hardly ever see you use that thing.” Will chuckled. “What’s got you so interested?”
Hannibal placed his phone face-down on the side table. “One of my favorite wine bars is re-opening soon.”

And in truth you do it well.” “There is little to manipulate when watching a dog chase a bird.” It starts with a bet.

Crime reporter Will Graham’s column on page six of the Baltimore Sun garners him the attention of many: fans, hobby detectives, the FBI…and others. Hannibal cut off a piece of meat with surgical precision. “I find your company rather engaging.” “Maybe I don’t find you all that engaging.” Silence. Hannibal grinned. “I see that it will take more than one dinner to earn your forgiveness. Challenge accepted.”
Falls the Shadow by littlesystems [words: 72,455]

This same trick of fate makes it so that your Marks are the only two voices you will ever hear when you go deaf at sixteen. Hannibal has a nice voice. Will hopes he’s his mate. He hopes he never hears the voice of the Chesapeake Ripper.

Everyone knows that Will and Hannibal are married. Not everyone knows that they are married to each other.
The Escapists by whiskeyandspite [words: 35,368]
Will’s cellmate said nothing, and Will didn’t venture. He had been prickly enough as a lecturer, where human interaction was mandatory, and prison was not the sort of place one made friends. One either made allies or enemies, or stayed quiet enough to avoid both. Will doubted he’d be that lucky; far too easy to rile up especially when stupidity was the catalyst. Prison, Will thought absently, was similar to college.

Pride and Prejudice omegaverse AU
Look, Mother! The Sheep Have Devoured the Wolves! by HigherMagic [words: 102,934]
Hannibal and Bedelia are married, but unable to have children. At Margot’s insistence, Hannibal agrees to meet the Omega that was a surrogate for her and Alana. Will is rough-edged, unrefined, and everything Hannibal shouldn’t desire. This arrangement promises to be clean, and simple. Of course, nothing concerning Will Graham is ever simple.
Wings of Wax and Feather by BelladonnaWyck and raiast [words: 55,947]
“Did you just smell me?” "Difficult to avoid. My apologies, I didn’t realize there were any Omegas in this section of the prison.” “Most get sent to the Omega Holding Facility two counties over. But then, most don’t get done in for rippin’ out an Alpha’s throat in the middle of the street.” or Hannibal Lecter had always known the winding road of fate may one day lead him straight to a prison cell. He’d never imagined he’d find his true mate there.
Truly, Madly, Deeply by slashyrogue [words: 52,811]
They meet by chance at a Christmas Party and share a kiss that seals their fate.
Purity by PixieDust291 [words: 130,528]
Will is cast aside by his alpha and sacrificed to the Wendigo that hunts in the forest. However, after confronting the creature Will then finds himself in the home of Hannibal. The alpha lives alone and seems to have taken it upon himself to nurture Will back to health. Over time Will grows comfortable with Hannibal and slowly reveals the reasons for his abandonment. Hannibal, being a pure bred alpha of the highest caliber, is well aware of just how rare and valuable Will is and decides to take the wounded omega for himself.
Quatervois by stratumgermanitivum, whiskeyandspite [words: 33,226]
Will is an Omega who desires independence and freedom. Hannibal is an Alpha who finds his mind curious. They make a deal: if Will can convince Hannibal that he is worth more than breeding stock, and can go through his heat without begging for his Alpha, Hannibal will not mate him, but make him a ward instead; Will could go to college, get a job, do anything he wanted. If not, then he will be Hannibal’s mate, bear pups, and accept his role. But is it really as simple as that?

Uh oh, new black cat! Sabrina AU just dropped! I call it A Game of Cat and Mouse.
Featuring:
Féline Folle (Mad Feline) - Black Cat! Sabrina
Tourbillon (Whirlwind) - Dragon! Adrien
Souricière (Mousetrap) - Mouse! Max
Cardinale (Cardinal) - Ladybug! Alya
En Haute Chien (Updog) - Dog! Kim
Usagi (Rabbit) - Bunny! Kagami
Infini (Infinity) - Snake! Alix
I have more planned but these are the ones I've named so far.
Basically the plot follows thusly;
Fu chooses the idealistic new girl with the go getter attitude and the police captain's steadfast and timid daughter to be the heroes, only to realize that their differing approaches to fighting akumas can sometimes complicate the situation further. They're still great heroes and when they can overcome their differences, an even better team. But he worries they might need some extra help. As such, he chooses two other heroes, without telling Cardinale or Féline Folle, and he chooses them together, as when he looks for the perfect potential heroes, he finds the two already working together and having great teamwork. And thus, Updog and Mousetrap became Paris's newest heroes. Cardinale had some words for Fu as he went behind their backs and over their heads on this, but was ultimately not adverse to the extra help. Féline Folle quickly fell into a rhythm of friendly banter and expert teamwork with Mousetrap, but Updog... Well she wasn't really sure what his deal was? He was generally really nice and silly, he was just a sweet goofball who did his part of the mission really well, but he had a tendency to call her things. Like crazy cat lady was one, which she thought wasn't very creative. But they weren't all bad, whiskers for example was pretty neutral. Than there was purrincess. That one gave her a bit of pause. He was confusing is what he was, and she didn't like it when things weren't clear cut and obvious. Made it harder to make decisions that way. In any case, Alya gets a strategy buddy and Sabrina gets a sparring partner and the four become a formidable team.
Plotlines include - Chloe and Marinette fighting for the title of Cardinal's number one fan, Chloe becoming obsessed with finding Cardinal's secret identity, Kimbrina rivalry/romance lovesquare, Max and Sabrina friendship, Feralbrina in case that wasn't clear, Adrien living happily in London with the Graham De Vanillys prior to the beginning of the show and having a much better life, AND MORE!

Speed

Today’s entry will mark the first official 4K home video release I am writing about. I already own a few other 4K UHDs, and a couple of months ago, I watched my first 4K video at home with 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. However, I already covered that movie’s BluRay release here several years ago, so I will not be dedicating another entry for it, other than to say that the 4K upgrade pops and makes it look like a new release. Today’s entry is for 1994’s Speed (trailer). Before diving into this movie, I noticed one of the tracks from this film’s score repeatedly used throughout sounds awfully like one of the main themes I primarily associated with the Metal Gear Solid franchise. I have no idea if this was pointed out before, and I just overlooked it all these years, or maybe I am grasping at straws. Click or press here to take a listen and decide for yourself. 1994 was a hell of a year for Hollywood movies primarily transpiring from a highway with The Chase, Speed, and the OJ Simpson Bronco chase….oh wait (although I highly recommend the ESPN 30 for 30 on it, simply titled: June 17th 1994). The majority of Speed has a straightforward premise: serial bomber and local madman Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) planted a bomb on a bus rigged to explode once the bus drops below 55 miles per hour. Police officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) is alerted to this by the bomber himself to exact revenge on Traven after successfully rescuing hostages from an elevator Payne armed at the beginning of the film.
Tumblr media
From there, for the middle hour of this nearly two-hour film, the action almost entirely takes place on the bus. Traven makes a grand entrance onto the bus by commandeering a Jaguar and having its owner (Glenn Plummer) take the wheel so Traven could heroically leap onto the bus and save the day. It would not be that easy of a rescue mission as Payne has eyes on the bus, and Traven has to play by his rules and get him his $3 million ransom to disarm the bus. Without question, the middle hour on the bus is the best part of the film. The opening half-hour is an excellent appetizer with the elevator hostage crisis that Traven and his partner, Harry (Jeff Daniels), successfully foil. However, once the action shifts to the bus is when Speed takes off. Shortly after taking control of the bus, one of the passengers freaks and inadvertently shoots the bus driver, and a fellow passenger, Annie (Sandra Bullock), takes over the wheel. Throughout the film, Annie and Traven have wonderful chemistry, and I could not help but root for the duo throughout. Every couple of minutes, there is a new potential conflict to overcome to keep the bus going over 55mph. The film wisely peppers in brief dialog exchanges to let the movie breathe just enough before the next hurdle makes itself present.
Tumblr media
The film's standout moment is the major obstacle for the bus to overcome when it encounters a stretch of unavoidable highway under construction and missing a hearty chunk of the road. Traven’s solution is that since that stretch of a road is on an incline, they may clear that gap if they build up enough speed! That epic stunt hits all the right notes, and I got goosebumps all over again re-watching it, and odds are, I bet you did too if you have seen this movie. If you have not, then watch this scene and see for yourself by click or pressing here. A lot of the critical discussion in the aftermath of this movie was if that jump was realistically possible. The best thing I can do is to compare it to another film, Road Trip, which is likely a better indicator of what could happen when attempting such a feat. Once the middle bus portion of the film is over, there are still about 20 minutes left where Traven tracks and chases down Payne in a subway station. The movie felt over once the bus portion had such a satisfying conclusion that it almost feels wrong to keep sticking with the film by this point, but I recommend you do since there is a satisfying payoff in the form of Payne’s demise. I have to share a story now when I first saw this film at around 13 or 14 on VHS. My dad’s VCR had what seemed to me at the time was a revolutionary feature where if I kept pressing the pause button repeatedly, it would slowly, frame-by-frame, play the film in super slow-motion. At that age, I thought this was a fantastic way to get the most out of the biggest stunts in action scenes. My favorite moment exploiting this feature was seeing Traven and Payne wrestle around on the top of a subway train until Payne was not watching his field of vision, and a warning light lead to his sudden beheading. I slow-motion replayed that sequence countless times in my awkward, early teenage years. Suffice it to say, Hopper plays the out-of-his-mind bomber perfectly, going so far as to make sure he receives his appropriate cinematic comeuppance.

The director ensures the many passengers on the bus maximized their minutes to the point I where it feels like you are right there with them!
Tumblr media
Two audio commentaries are the only extra features of the 4K disc in this 4K/BluRay combo pack. One is with the director, Jan de Bont, and the other is with producer Mark Gordon and writer Graham Yost. Props are to whoever decided to subtitle the commentary tracks. I very much appreciate it! I first started to bounce back and forth between the two commentary tracks, but Bont was way too relaxed and had too many pauses to hold my attention, and I finished up with his track within five minutes. However, Yost and Gordon are very much engaged from beginning to end and have fun cracking jokes and sharing memories throughout. Some quick takeaways I got from them were how they wanted to film a major scene outside of a sports arena, dealing with critics poking holes at how unrealistic their stunts were, and how watching the movie felt very different at the time of the commentary recording just two months after 9/11. The BluRay disc contains the remainder of the bonus features. Inside Speed is a four-part feature lasting just under an hour breaking down the visual effects, stunts, and location sequences, but half of it also contains an HBO First Look special hosted by Dennis Hopper that hits all the right kinds of cheesy mid-90s EPK nostalgia that it is worth checking out. Aside from 12 minutes of extended scenes and a Billy Idol music video that seems totally off base with the tempo of the film, there are a couple of Action Sequences mini-features breaking down some of the stunts. I highly recommend watching the one dissecting how they did the bus jump, as it shows raw footage of what really happened when they shot it, and showed footage of some of the specific safety measures they instilled to make that stunt as safe as possible and had some eye-opening interviews with the stunt driver before and after.
Tumblr media
After watching that old VHS copy nearly a dozen times, Speed wound up being one of my favorite action films I got burnt out early on and never bothered upgrading to a DVD or standalone BluRay. Watching it again in 4K all these years later breathed new life into it for me. I am not an expert at breaking down video quality by any means, but watching the 4K disc on my 4KTV gave the impression of this having far more current production values. The editors somehow managed to remove all the old film grain defects for a smooth 4K upgrade. If you have not seen Speed yet, then it has everything you could want out of a mid-90s action movie with explosions, gripping thrills and stunts, dramatic rescues, plenty of zinger one-liners…..and a Billy Idol theme song. Pardon me while I attempt my best Dennis Hopper impression here, “Pop quiz, hotshot, which 1994 blockbuster that takes place primarily on a bus is a perfect candidate for beer and popcorn movie night at home?” Other Random Backlog Movie Blogs 3 12 Angry Men (1957) 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown 21 Jump Street The Accountant Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie Atari: Game Over The Avengers: Age of Ultron The Avengers: Endgame The Avengers: Infinity War Batman: The Dark Knight Rises Batman: The Killing Joke Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Bounty Hunters Cabin in the Woods Captain America: Civil War Captain America: The First Avenger Captain America: The Winter Soldier Christmas Eve The Clapper Clash of the Titans (1981) Clint Eastwood 11-pack Special The Condemned 2 Countdown Creed I & II Deck the Halls Detroit Rock City Die Hard Dirty Work Dredd The Eliminators The Equalizer Faster Fast and Furious I-VIII Field of Dreams Fight Club The Fighter For Love of the Game Good Will Hunting Gravity Grunt: The Wrestling Movie Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Hell Comes to Frogtown Hercules: Reborn Hitman I Like to Hurt People Indiana Jones 1-4 Inglourious Basterds Ink The Interrogation Interstellar Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Jobs Joy Ride 1-3 Justice League (2017 Whedon Cut) Last Action Hero Major League Mallrats Man of Steel Man on the Moon Man vs Snake Marine 3-6 Merry Friggin Christmas Metallica: Some Kind of Monster Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpions Revenge National Treasure National Treasure: Book of Secrets Nintendo Quest Not for Resale Old Joy Payback (Director’s Cut) Pulp Fiction The Punisher (1989) The Ref The Replacements Reservoir Dogs Rocky I-VIII Running Films Part 1 Running Films Part 2 San Andreas ScoobyDoo Wrestlemania Mystery Scott Pilgrim vs the World The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Shoot em Up Slacker Skyscraper Small Town Santa Steve Jobs Source Code Star Trek I-XIII Sully Take Me Home Tonight TMNT Trauma Center The Tooth Fairy 1 & 2 UHF Veronica Mars Vision Quest The War Wild The Wizard Wonder Woman The Wrestler (2008) X-Men: Apocalypse X-Men: Days of Future Past
