Dude, punk and Riot Grrrl specifically were so important to me because it not only allowed me to express my struggles as a girl but as an Asian-American.
The model minority myth was pushed onto my parents and onto me by my parents. Sometimes I get really stressed out about my identity because I am basically a walking, living, breathing stereotype. I get straight As every year, I'm good at math, I literally wear a Harvard hoodie every day because it helps me keep sight of my goals.
Punk is my way of combatting that. Listening to punk music and embracing punk culture is my way of saying, "I am not your model minority myth. I will not stay quiet. I have struggles. I may be doing well in school, but the education system is still systemically flawed." It helped me remember that I am who I am not because I want to perpetuate those stereotypes but because I want to go far in life. Riot Grrrl helped me say, "My ideas should be taken seriously."
But, Riot Grrrl isn't inclusive of WOC.
Riot Grrrl isn't inclusive of me.
The worst thing about this is that I thought it did. The Riot Grrrl movement supports young, white, middle-class women. I am a young, Asian, middle-class woman. I was blinded by my middle-class privilege, preventing me from seeing the hostility towards WOC in this movement. And in that, I lumped myself in with white people.
I am not white, and I don't want to be seen as white. My dad and I constantly get comments like, "You're basically white people."
So yeah. I don't want to be a Riot Grrrl anymore. We need a cool new intersectional feminist punk movement now.

Would you rather go shopping for some cheap bleach with Sven Kruspe or have a verbal fight with Richard Zee Kay over whether gel or hair spray will last longer for the slicked down Karen do?
Hi!! Another "choose your fighter Richard"-edition 👌🏼
This time, these two lovely versions are on my mind while debating over the respective situations:
1) Hunting for bleach or hair colour to save Sven/Scholle from the danger of being any less than angelic-looking
It depends where Sven/Scholle would have to look for hair colour.
In the GDR, there were pretty limited options regarding stores and products - he'd probably scrape together some leftover Pfennige and off he goes to the nearest "Konsum" (one of the few store chains), hoping and praying that this time around, some hair colour would be available. But alas, it's queuing time in front of the store, so better make sure to bring some time to wait until the cows come home (figuratively, Scholle's cow is still safe and sound in his backyard after the last adventure, thank God).
The hair colours back then would most likely ruin your hair structure pretty quick (for example the brand "Londa") and sometimes, not even hair conditioner was available. So after colouring/bleaching, a mixture of oil and egg yolk would do the trick to at least somewhat keep his hair smooth. Have fun washing that out 👀
If Sven/Scholle would go shopping after the wall came down, culture shock it is, mixed with utter excitement and quite overwhelming feelings. Off he goes to the local drug store "Schlecker" and... What do you mean, there are 17 shades of blond?? While buying hair colour now is almost too easy, things still get an exciting kick since now he's maybe already sporting his ungodly yet endearing dreads - good luck colouring those without tangling them every 2 seconds.
2) The Richard Zee Kay "alternative hairstyle" (as I like to call it) situation
What do you mean by arguing? Everybody knows you first put around 1-1,5 tubes of hair gel on your hair and neatly style it. After you're sure it has the texture of concrete, spray approximately 2 cans of hairspray on it, to make sure it's set and sturdy enough for every possible encounter - like beating the living daylights out of your band mate or complaining to your nearest manager.
I wouldn't argue with him, I would just try to hide his damn comb and drag him to the next hairdresser, that's what I would do.
So I think this time around, I choose the bleach situation 😌

Image ID: An ink drawing of Kolt, naked, from the whump series Fallen. He is bruised and looks away as the chain attached to his collar is tugged. He is inside what appears to be a cell, with multiple eyes on the walls watching him intensely. /end ID.
Ok, so, I tried to do this like two times and it took me a while to lay the sketch. I had an idea for what to do--i went to give the series a shot, once i noticed this buddy here is a part of one so i could get better context--and so the idea i had was for making something from his villain days! It appears that Kolt as a villain was very intriguing (at least for me) but I couldn't make a sketch I was satisfied with, so I decided to go more whumpy! I remember a part where Kolt is in his recovery and he remembers when multiple people were watching and mocking him....couldn't get this over my head. Overall, I haven't finished it yet, but Fallen is a great series! They write it so well!
