if you’re looking for a cool new punk band to listen to, i highly recommend looking for local small bands before searching “punk” into spotify.

don’t know how to find them?

what i did is i looked up what some punk bars in my area, i started going on random nights and found bands i liked that way. (if you’re under 21, you can still look up the bars, but go to their instagram, see what bands are playing and see if they are on band camp, spotify, etc.)

this has worked amazing for me, i’ve made so many friends, it’s to the point where certain bands shows feel like monthly family reunions full of so much love and genuine compassion.

hope this helps anyone wanting to be more involved in the subculture

EDIT: if you live in a small town, just search the nearest big city. or honestly any city that you vibe with. every area has a slightly different sound and scene find what you blend with!!

i think one of the reasons punk means so much to me is that under the spikes and studs and safety pins is the same kid who sobbed violently every time he got in an argument, a kid who cared so much about the people around him that he kept asking questions. kept trying to make sense of things, even when it started to alienate him, because it wasn’t a simple disagreement to him, it was his whole life. something was fundamentally wrong with his brain that made him incapable of understanding the world the way the people around him did, so he was seen as selfish when all he ever wanted was to make everyone happy. and maybe when that kid grew up, he still had questions, and he never stopped trying to understand the world a little better. but he was also going to realize that he was never broken; he was hurt by a system that was. but he wouldn’t stop fighting for change, to make it a hell of a lot better for the other misfits and outcasts who felt like there wasn’t a place for them. he was going to stop caring so much how he was perceived for expressing himself and he was never going to let anyone make him feel like he didn’t belong. ever.

My Punk Tips for a DIY Lifestyle:

Thrift some black fabric (or grab an old black shirt you don't care for anymore), get a white fabric marker, posca, sharpie, or paint and make a bunch of patches to sew onto your clothes.

If you're a digital artist this is your time to shine! Make stencils, posters, design clothes (there are free templates online), and if you don't own a printer libraries will let you print for cheap and sometimes free. My library card allows me to print 10 pages for free.

Reuse everything or if you don't want it anymore donate it or recycle it.

Trash is very punk. Soda can tabs for instance can make for cool jewlery. It's all about creativity.

Drug store makeup is your best friend and honestly they're sometimes better than the luxury name brand products. Or hell even make some of your own.

If you need to order something I suggest etsy. Yes, some of it's expensive but you're supporting small artists and buissnesses rather than a corportation. It's also easier to find poc, queer, and neurodivergent buissnesses and artists.

Overall punk is about being creative. Just get creative and have fun!

to all the people who think dressing alt/being a part of the alt subculture is too expensive: tiktok has rotted your brain.

you don't have to buy expensive clothes. do what people did in the 80s and 90s. go to the thrift store, get some cheap shit & fuck it up with scissors and thread. make your own patches out of old t-shirts. make a top by cutting the crotch out of a pair of tights. make pins out of bottle caps. dye your own hair. rip holes in things. whatever you do, do not go purchase distressed clothes. CUT THAT SHIT UP YOURSELF. trust me there is nothing more satisfying than sitting on the floor at midnight absolutely flaying a sweater that used to be your mom's. it's also free.

alt isn't expensive & diy culture is the soul of it. now for the love of god go have fun.

Rant: Hot Topic needs to stop

Ok, I understand that the store is called Hot Topic, meaning they will make clothes based on the latest pop culture. But to make a jacket and a backpack based on a character that is literally Anti-capitalist is fucking ironic.

Hobie aka Spiderpunk would not approve of this. He would rather for y'all to make the jacket by thrifting and DIYing. He would rather for y'all to steal this from a Hot Topic instead of buying it. Being Anti-capitalist and an Anarchist is common within the punk subculture.

So if you're a fan of Hobie, then show your love for him by making your own Battle Jacket based on his by spending as less as possible. Don't support these multi-million dollar companies. They're just using the character for profit because he's popular.

Edit: Hobie being a fictional character isn't the point. The point is that he's a punk and like I said it's common within the punk subculture to be anti-capitalist and an Anarchist. So for Hot Topic, a company that is almost worth a billion dollars, to make pricey items based on a punk is literally against what the subculture stand for.

Queer horror from my teens

I periodically wonder whether these books are still known and read by young goths and horror fans as they were all extremely important to me in my teenage years, so I thought I'd share them.

Though I'm cishet, during the mid 90s two of my favourite authors wrote primarily queer fiction: they were Anne Rice and another author from New Orleans who is now known as Billy Martin.

He came out as a trans man in 2011, however these books were published prior to that so unfortunately you have to search for them under his deadname. This is why I've used that name in the tags on this post. I don't believe the books were ever reprinted with his current name.

Though I loved Rice, I always felt a more immediate connection with Martin due to his vivid portrayal of subcultures like goth and punk, and how it felt to be a teenager who was part of them. I could see myself in many of his characters as I had the same interests, listened to the same music, and shared the same sense of social alienation. Remember in the 90s the Internet was still a reasonably new thing, and many of us didn't have a home Internet connection at all. There was certainly no social media, no YouTube, and no real way to meet and interact with like-minded teens unless you were lucky enough to have another "weird kid" at your school. If you were a weird kid, you likely had very few friends and were bullied.

That as much as anything else led me to seek solace in books written by an author who I felt understood me, and characters who became my friends.

Lost Souls is about vampires in a kind of Lost Boys/Near Dark way. Fans of the YouTuber OfHerbsAndAltars might be interested to know that this book is where the name of his channel comes from - it's a description of the taste of Chartreuse liqueur.

Drawing Blood is about ghosts, a "murder house", computer hacking, comic art and a very beautiful (if rather messed up) romance. This one is probably my favourite of the three.

Exquisite Corpse is about serial killers, set against the AIDS crisis of the 90s. If you like the Hannibal TV series you'll probably enjoy this one - imagine if Dennis Nilsen and Jeffrey Dahmer had somehow met.

Martin doesn't pull any punches when it comes to descriptions of blood and gore, violence, abusive parents or his portrayal of toxic romantic relationships (of which there are many in his books), but if you can deal with those things there is also a great deal of beauty, phenomenally good writing, and a somewhat unique perspective on the supernatural.

Maybe I'm biased, looking at these through the lens of my teenage self. Maybe they'd seem horribly dated to today's young audience. But I still wanted to make this post in case there's someone out there who will end up loving them as much as I did.

Let's stop arguing about what's punk and what isn't and just be ourselves.

THAT'S the truest form of punk rock.

The scene has changed so much since the 70s, becoming needlessly strict and gatekeeping. It begs the question: has the definition of the scene itself changed over the years or have the types of people in it changed? My vote is the second. There's so many bigoted arguments and extremist definitions that I'm not even sure if there IS a true definition anymore unless we stick with the ogs.

Point is, just be yourself. Listen to the music, rebel, have firm beliefs and stop giving a damn. You'll be a punk ass in my book.

it’s so funny to me when people try to gatekeep punk. we’re literally the subculture of weirdos, misfits and oddballs and people complain when someone’s a little cringe? no, i’m not talking about posers with their amazon patch vests and shein clothing or conservatives who pretend they’re subversive for upholding the norm. you absolutely should be annoyed when people use the aesthetics or punk without understanding its radical history. but when it comes to beginner artists who are sincere in their interests in diy, politics, and music, i don’t see the point in being overly critical of young people who are passionate about something. everyone’s diy is shit at first, and there’s something beautiful about working to create something valuable out of what others consider worthless

A comparatively affordable, environmentally friendly, one time purchase that doesn't make you regularly line the pockets of Big Gas Executives and directly fund the fossil fuel industry.

Bicycles are far easier and cheaper to replace, repair, or modify to your liking by yourself! Pretty much anyone at any skill level can learn basic bike maintenance, they don't require nearly as much specialized knowledge and pretty much all the tools you will need can be easily and relatively affordably sourced from a hardware store, bike shop, or used.

'but they're not cool' first of all, caring about being cool automatically makes you uncool. Second, cool is a learned association and what is cool now won't be cool in five years. What was cool 5 years ago isn't cool now. We have been conditioned by movies and tv to think the only people who ride parks are losers and the butt of the joke. We can literally make bicycles cool by simply being a bunch of cool people who ride bicycles.

As car culture is the dominant mindset in North America a bicycle is, in fact, counterculture! Piss off drivers simply by existing! Although do be warned many think it is completely reasonable to attempt to murder you with their car because they had to slow down a little bit to pass you.

The first step to dismantling our current car culture and pedestrian hostile infrastructure is to opt out of using cars as much as possible. Cities are not and have not been built for people in decades. They are built for cars. You shouldn't have to be forced to clean out your wallet paying for a car, fuel, insurance, etc because a corporation hardcore lobbied your government to design the world around you to be inconvenient, miserable, and impossible to navigate without one so they can make more money at everyone else's expense.

The more people use bikes, the less money corporations make. The less damage they can do to the planet. The demand for bike and pedestrian friendly infrastructure rises. Cities become cleaner, nicer, and more liveable for everyone.

You deserve to be able to live.
