Do the Angels like nerf?
Do they play paint ball or laser tag?
Do they take it Waaaay to seriously?
I can imagine them doing laser tag, obliterating their competition, then going to play arcade games after.
If they played arcade games what's their go to game? Racing? Shooting? Dancing maybe 👀👀?
angels on a date/not date at the boardwalk and ruining some kid’s birthday party by annihilating them in laser tag 😭

idk man i just work here
listening
not another rockstar, maisie peters. spotify
this is a little poppier than i generally prefer-- the first knee-jerk comparison i can make for the vocals is taylor swift, esp in the first verse? luckily for everyone, i was white-knuckling it down the katy freeway (26 lanes. never again) and did not have the extra concentration necessary to skip it on whatever autogenerated dance playlist spotify spat out for me. as a fellow woman with a Type, i must tip my hat to ms peters.
Hmm, funny I could pick 'em in a line up, line up Pretty certain I could do it with my eyes shut, eyes shut A little self-obsessive and I sign up, sign up Where's the pen? Where's the line?
@pasta-pardner has made a gorgeously lush electronic/indie pop cowboy playlist. my very favorite song (so far, still have it on loop) is Horsie by Twilight Circus Dub Sound System. it sounds like the opening theme to Samurai Champloo. it ripples and grooves. it lives somewhere between rock and reggae. the whole album is incredible music to hang out to.

retractionwatch (my beloved) linked out to datacolada.org in a recent article and my ears perked up. data colada gets REAL deep into the investigative reporting of specific papers, including some fascinating excel sleuthing. they use CalcChain!!! i thought i was the only one who used CalcChain!!!
CalcChain tells Excel in which order to carry out the calculations in the spreadsheet. It tells Excel something like "First solve the formula in cell A1, then the one in A2, then B1, etc." CalcChain is short for 'calculation chain'.
one of my worst traits as a person is that i looooooooove an academic trainwreck. i love watching academia eat itself. i love watching people get caught for sloppy shit like "excel file sorted REAL weird, pointing to tampering with individual data points"

new jennings motor sport!!! the oil change is. hough. impressively disgusting. oil does some funky shit when it's been sitting for ??? decades

playing
ive been playing genshi/n impact like it's my job. having a lot of thoughts about crunch, and content, and player expectations vs shareholder expectations and Line Go Up and if AAA free-to-play video games are at all ethical to play for anyone ever, but hey! look at this snarky catgirl!

also lol. lmao. this is a game for children. we are all aware of the restrictions and limitations placed upon games for children in the chinese and american markets so yeah the answer is going to be yes, every time

making
lately i have been going to my best friend's house after work (what an unimaginable sentence a month ago) and hanging out and watching whatever toddler shows are on tv while we shoot the shit and i knit. there's another half-repeat on the baby blanket for the baby who has just turned four months old, but it's in the car and the night is dark and full of mosquitoes.
i literally cannot do any life shit, even most doctor's appointments, until i have a real physical stable address so all i am really doing is knitting and playing genshi/n and opening and closing my email like the fridge. i have one security deposit back from the old mass apt plus one more paycheck (but, crucially, not the nearly $2k from the roach apt and we are rapidly approaching lawsuit time) so the cat and i are a little bit more stable/able to put down a security deposit on something else the minute it comes along. this would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of readers like you during that very bad first week here. thank you. i want to do some sort of thank you...stream? liveblog? series of posts about something? but i'm not sure what yet. stay tuned. tell me your thoughts. what would you like to see?

Assignment 3 Development
Group Members:
Alexander Garner
Annmarie Gomez
Cody Barnett
Lily Wang
Prototype Information
Team 1 has decided to develop Lily’s game, Rubber Duckie Hero.
Game Elevator Pitch
Rubber Duckie Hero
Plunge yourself into the bathtub and prove yourself to be a real "Rubber Duckie Hero". Take control of your boat as you navigate treacherous waters to rescue rubber duckies trapped in bubbles. Be careful! Vicious sharks and crafty octopi are here to disturb your mission - don't worry as you have nets at your disposal to assist you in your journey. However you must brace yourself, as the temperature of the water rises, prepare for a scorching challenge during "In Hot Water" mode.
Gameplay
-Bubbles contain ducks, sharks, and octopi
-Shoot at the bubbles the rubber duckies and trapped in to free them
-Shooting bubbles containing sharks/octopi will create more enemies to avoid
-Ducks will disappear after x seconds
-Come into direct contact with ducks to collect RP
-RP claimed after victory can be used as currency to buy new ships/cosmetics
Enemies
-Sharks: Deal 1 damage, disappear after attacked
-Octopi: Steal freed ducks that haven't been obtained - low spawn frequency
Nets
-act as a projectile which can be launched behind and infront of player - Active for 3 seconds
-Defeat sharks and octopi
-Max 3 nets held at once
Health
-Begin with max health-5
-Dropping to 0 health = lose
-Collect hearts to gain health
In Hot Water!
-Countdown to IHW displayed
-Map will turn red and all existing sharks/octopi in bubbles will be unleashed
Player movement speed buffed during this duration
-Lasts for 30 seconds once IHW begins
Controls:
-Movement: WASD
-Shoot: Space bar
-Front Net: Up arrow key
Progress:
After forming the final group for assignment 3, we decided on the final game to be "Rubber hero Ducky", a quirky spin on an asteroids/shooter.
For the roles our team were very versatile in terms of skills and hopes for certain roles. However as none of our members were very experienced in programming, we decided to keep each given role as a loose idea of who does what. Therefore i was given the roles of designer and writer.
So far we have the fundamentals of the game that was listed on the A2 game sheet completed. As of now we have decided to remove/not include temporarily some features such as the "whirlpools" which was originally designed to stun the player as we found this caused the screen to look very messy.
Tumblr media
We have all elements of the game as originally intended included, we have some iterations we would like to include and more playtesting to be done.
issues:
We have ran into some bugs after doing some playtests.
-Bullets not disappearing after coming into contact with bubbles, allowing for them to keep moving off the screen, then coming into sharks off the screen. This causes them to fly to the player from off the screen, not allowing them enough time to dodge.
-In Hot Water mode takes way too long before activating, this can allow for certain play styles that we did not originally intend for.

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
I didn't finish this one. I stopped in the middle of Chapter 8, and I just didn't pick it back up.
I was pretty enamored by Dirge's gun customization system, but the actual shooting didn't hook me at all. It may be my fault for playing on the "Hard" difficulty, but I routinely felt like I had little control over avoiding enemy fire. I guess Vincent's best defense is a quick offense. The dodge felt worse than useless.
Pikachu played on "Normal" difficulty, and while she faced fewer enemies, I would say the principal differentiating factor is that the game paused when she opened up the menu. This was not the case for me, which made the item quick use buttons mandatory.
I liked the scoring system quite a bit, though such systems make me want to replay individual levels, a feature Dirge lacks. Being able to redo levels to grind would compromise the scoring system, so I suppose any solution that allowed replaying levels would need complexity to handle reverting your stats and guns. Along with the sheer length of most levels, I understand why it wasn't an option.
I really disliked how opaque the RPG elements were. The option to exchange XP for gil is interesting, but far less so when I don't really understand how Vincent's stats work, and how they compare to the guns' stats. The guns, at least, were quite clear.
I should probably note that VII is not among the several Final Fantasy games I have played. (Those are IV, V, VI, IX, Tactics A2, and both DS Crystal Chronicleses.) So, much of the (lengthy, cutscene-delivered) story of Dirge of Cerberus flew right over my head, and I had absolutely no attachment to the characters. Yuffie seemed pretty likeable, and I'll always root for a Steve Blum-voiced protagonist.
I did laugh when I read the difficulty descriptions in the Final Fantasy XVI demo. Déjà vu, huh?
My Review: ⭐⭐▫️▫️[I don't like it.]

(For a bit of a change of pace, this week I'm offering film photos of Paris. My street photography usually gets very little attention, so I'm not expecting much, but who cares if we don't play the attention game ?) *Pascal sous l'ogive* Canon A2 + Agfa Scala 200 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is one of my oldest favourite film images of Paris. Assessment 3 Development Progress
Week 10 marks the start of development for Assessment 3; the game being developed is an extension of Cyber Flight. The continued development of this game will focus on expanding upon the features seen in the A2 posters.
This week, the focus of development is to complete the game, by adding in a scoring system, ensuring enemy AI works correctly, adding weapons and ensuring asteroids can be destroyed.
The first focus of development this week is to allow players to destroy asteroids. In order to be able to destroy asteroids they will be assigned a health value; large asteroids have a health pool of 30, and small have a health pool of 10. Players will deal 10 damage per shot, so 3 shots to destroy a big asteroid, 1 to destroy a small.
Tumblr media
When large asteroids are destroyed they will break into 3 small asteroids, and will apply a random force in a random direction.
The second feature to implement was the scoring system. Players gain score from killing enemies and collecting certain pickups. Whenever a player earns score it will be added to a variable attached to the player; this is then displayed on the HUD in game.
Tumblr media
The third feature to add was additional enemy classes. To test features this week only the basic types need to be added. The short range/melee class has already been added previously, so only the ranged enemies need to be implemented for now. The ranged class will move towards the player and shoot at them while they are looking within 20° of the player. Currently these enemies have no range limitation; which likely needs to be changed in future.
Tumblr media
The addition of these features allows our group to test the game as a whole during the first playtesting session. We will be able to test if the enemy types are clear, and the basic premise of the game is fun.

Not me crying like crazy at the final final ending of Nier Automata… the emotional roller coaster of realizing ohh this is like the smash bros credits scene where you get to shoot the names ah cool no ok I just died and have to restart from the beginning oh ok fuck me I guess. It’s ok I just sit there and zone out for like 10 mins like ok I’m starting to lose feeling in my eyes now I don’t know how much longer I can go on oh wait I just fucking died again to the actual Square name. W h a t t h e f u c k I have to do this again? “Do you give up?” it says. Well honestly I was about to and try again another day but now that you mention it no I don’t think I will. Oh so I don’t have to restart from the very beginning, that’s nice. I get to restart from the Square logo, but why’s it suddenly so hard? I keep dying of attrition. I’m kinda numb. This is some real bullet hell. I guess I have to get good? Why am I so bad? It doesn’t even cross my mind that it’s nearly impossible to progress. I feel like it’s my fault because I didn’t kill the big names fast enough. Then I think it’s because I didn’t kill the small names quicker. When I die, it keeps asking me if life is meaningless and I guess it’s not so I keep going. There are messages of hope that appear that I can’t tell if they’re from the game or like one of the dead bodies from the overworld where you get to leave a pre-rendered message behind. When I die again it asks me if I want helpers and I’m about to say no because I don’t want to play on easy mode but I just want to get through this. A bunch more guys get tacked on me and we have 5x lasers now. I annihilate Square in 1 second. I just start crying. Why did this get to me…?? Is it the music swelling and the idea that real people are actually here helping me? I don’t know how I got through it when I couldn’t see anything. Whenever I get hit and it says [name] dies and they fall off me, I just start crying more. This is so weird, I’m sitting here crying through bullet hell. I was seriously about to actually give up before this. When I finally get through everything and it tells me that 2B, 9S, and A2 were real who existed in the world and that in and of itself is meaningful, and now I get to send my message to other players who die, I realize oh those messages were actually from real people. I scroll through the options trying to decide what I should send to other dying players and I just start crying again.

Disney Marathon Commentary: The Silver Age
A compilation of various jokes and observations during our marathon of the entire Disney Animated Canon over the past year. No movie was safe from being poked fun at, and while I couldn’t get all the jokes, I did gather the ones that stuck out by the time each movie finished. This is all in good fun, and we like most of the movies.
Participants were me (A2), @knighta3 (A3), and @angelfishcake (A4). Most of the time, I’m being vague about who said what, though I get specific in a couple cases.
Today, we come back to the full-length animated features, covering the rest of the movies that were made during the rest of Walt Disney’s life. We got a bunch of classics here, and also a bunch of snark.
Cinderella
Tumblr media
~ Cinderella is me in the morning when my alarm goes off.
~ We love the local aspiring grandfather, The King.
~ *discussion about the Fairy Godmother’s relation to the Blue Fairy*
~ *theorizing that the rest of the Kingdom doesn’t like the Tremaines*
Tumblr media
~ “It’s the Headless Horsemen!” “No, they have heads.”
~ Everyone makes fun of the Prince for trying to find her based on shoe size, but it wasn’t his idea.
~ “My old enemy…
Tumblr media
 STAIRS.”
~ Conspiracy theory, Anastasia is the Russian princess of the same name and was kidnapped as a child by Lady Tremaine
Alice in Wonderland
~ This jumped into the um, “plot”, rather quickly.
~ Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum are squeaky toys.
~ The White Rabbit is the only sane citizen of Wonderland.
~ She’s not a freakin’ weed you piece of crap flowers!
~ Oh, look, the caterpillar was actually helpful.
~ The “painting the roses red” scene is the only one with some line of logic.
~ Yo,
Tumblr media
 Is that José ?
~ There’s nonsense, and then there’s being rude, and nearly everyone in Wonderland is the latter.
Peter Pan
~ Wendy’s getting her own room? Oh, the horror!
Tumblr media
~ This shot of Peter’s face looks so evil.
~ Geez, Wendy, making the moves on a boy you just met!
Tumblr media
~ “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!”
~ “That is one of the funniest casual murders I’ve ever seen.”
~ “All hands on deck! We’re gonna shoot a kid!” “There’s a flock of them, we gotta hit at least one!”
~ Every scene with the Indians is uncomfortable to watch.
~ The Chief’s mouth moves so weird…
~ I really wonder why all these girls like Peter, he’s kind of a jerk.
~ They all want free tattoos!
~ Wendy, it wasn’t “wonderful”, I legit just saw you have a terrible time in Neverland.
Lady and the Tramp
~ This is such accurate puppy behavior.
Tumblr media
~ “Meanwhile, on the other side of the tracks…”
~ “Mmm, yep, I just woke up… what a day!”
Tumblr media
~ “Oh no.”
~ “I don’t like this lady.” “She’s a Karen.” “She is!”
~ Plot twist, it’s the rooster that’s shooting them.
~ The dog pound scene is worse than those humanitarian commercials.
Tumblr media
~ This rat is a surprisingly scary Disney villain.
Sleeping Beauty
Tumblr media
~ “Oh, look, it’s the three of us.”
~ “Do you not understand the concept of growing up?! This isn’t Neverland!”
~ Don’t follow strange voices, you might get captured by the fae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
~ “Yep, they’re definitely you two.”
~ Since the raven was hit by the magic spewing from the chimney, it would have been funny if he had been colored a splattered blue-and-pink mess for the rest of the scene. Imagine Maleficent’s reaction if he had come back to the castle like that.
~ “I think the kings are a little drunk.” “Psht, lightweights.” “Well, that guy is a lighter weight.”
~ And Prince Phillip gets captured by the fae.
~ *fumbles over the word “Gargoyles” and it comes out “GARGLES”*
Tumblr media
~ “It’s a demonic ritual.” “No, it’s a barbecue.” “Eh, same thing.”
~ *argument over whether Maleficent’s bird is a crow or not*
~ People don’t talk about the fairies enough, they’re more the main characters of this movie than the title character.
Tumblr media
~ “Maleficent, the final boss!” “Guess this is a video game now.”
~ “She said a bad word!” “Jiminy Cricket said worse.”
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Tumblr media
~ Roger here acting like it’s his wife having a baby
~ When Pongo turned off the TV, the guy in the commercial looked startled just before he disappeared.
Tumblr media
~ Cruella has a devil phone
~ All these dogs are good dogs
~ In this house we stan the Colonel, Sergeant Tibbs, and the Captain
Tumblr media
~ This poor man has no idea why this lady is going all road rage on him
~ *the three of us die laughing at the implications of “Oh, Pongo, you old rascal!”*
The Sword in the Stone
Tumblr media
~ “This guy looks like the Stabbington Brothers from Tangled.”
~ *A4 keeps cooing over the unfortunate wolf*
Tumblr media
~ Just use magic to fix up your loft!
~ This boy is discount Cinderella
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~ “How many people are in this castle?” *sister proceeds to count each character that shows up or is mentioned, including the ever offscreen Hobbs; there’s not very many*
Tumblr media
~ This is sexual harassment!
Tumblr media
~ Hey, the owl’s giving him some actual education!
~ Honestly, Merlin’s not very helpful, no matter how much Arthur claims he is.
~ This isn’t a plot, this is just random animal shenanigans stringed together and calling it “education”. What exactly is Arthur learning that’ll help him when he’s king?
~ The sword was only relevant for the last five minutes.
The Jungle Book
~ EVIL WINNIE THE POOH
~ STONER ELEPHANT
~ Bagheera, no, every time you leave, something bad happens!
~ Musical numbers are trouble or at least invite it.
Tumblr media
~ *guess what song we start singing*
~ “I’ve only known Mowgli for half a day, but if anything happened to him I’d kill everyone in this jungle and then myself.”
Tumblr media
~ The elephants are the ones behind deforestation!
~ “Shere Khan reminds me of Count Dooku and I’m not sure why.”
Tumblr media
~ “I like these vultures. They’re friends.”

Fem!S/O Likes to Draw Him During Practice: Tsukishima
Tumblr media
@iitsukkiswaifuxii Thank you so much for requesting again bby 🥺💞💞 definitely not annoying, I love to write and am happy to be receiving requests ya'll have no idea 🥰
 I hope you guys enjoy!!
As always requests are: O P E N (Just shoot me an ask!!)
Tsukishima
It was just the normal thing for you to do at this point, ever since you'd had an art project that you used the Volleyball group as your focus for.
Tsukishima had shrugged you off at first, not seeing the point
“You want to come watch a group of sweaty boys play multiple rounds of volleyball for nothing other than to stop the excessive whining of Hinata?”
its like he’s genuinely confused about why even though you told him about your art project
“Please Tsuki! I already told my teacher that I was going to use your club as my focus!”
he just stood there smirking at you, of course he was going to take you to the club so you could do your art project. He wanted you to do well but he couldn’t just let this opportunity for teasing pass him by. looking down at you, he simply tilts his head, feigning innocence
“If youre going to act like this, i’ll just have to swtch to the basketball team.” Tsuki legit glares at the wall for a full minute before grabbing your wrist, albeit gently yet still firmly as he drags you to go meet Yamaguchi so you three could head to the gym
you grin because: V I C T O R Y
when you meet up with Yamaguchi, Tsukishima keeps his hand on your wrist, not minding showing PDA in front of his friend. Yamaguchi smiles upon spotting you two, setting up to walk on the other side of you
“Y/n! you're coming to practice?”
you nod and grin, patting your art bag, “You guys are going to be the focus of my art for the next week!”
Yamaguchi blushes and immediately goes all shy baby because someone is possibly going to be drawing him??? his heart will die just from nervousness
“Only if you want to though!”
that calms him down as the three of you get to the club, getting changed (in your respective changing rooms smh we’re children of God) and heading into the gym.
Tsuki simply nodded at you before going to the rest of the team, but you didn;t mind because you knew he didn’t want to have to deal with Tanaka and Noya which wasn’t an option anyway
“OOOOOO TSUKKKIIIII YOUR GIRLFRIEND HERE TO SEE YOU PLAY HUH!?”
“THIS DOESN’T MEAN WE’LL GO EASY ON YOU PUNK!”
“I mean just play like normal, that’s easy enough.”
“WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!?”
You just have to laugh and set up next to Ukai, Kiyoko and Takeda.
It wasn’t long until you started drawing, smiling as you watched the expressions on the boys faces each time they scored a point, the determination and expressions of fun.
Since the game was so quick sometimes, you had to take pictures and videos just so you could put details in it when you got home
the week continued and soon enough you had drawn each of the boys at least once, some more realistic and others more abstract with the additions of wings or feathers
like Yachi when she first joined, you saw the boys play and we’re immediately in awe, and so even after your week was up, you still came to practice and continued to draw the boys - for the purpose of practice (yeah okay)
It wasn’t the only reason of course, you also loved being able to send more time with your boyfriend. Before this you couldn’t really walk to or from school seeing as he woke up early and left late for practice.
so being able to spend more time with him was amazing, especially since it meant that he would sometimes come to your house afterwards just to make sure you didn't stay up too late on your work
often times he’d end up joining you and your parents for dinner
so whenever you were there, you just kept drawing Tsuki, mesmerised by the proud look he’d get on his face whenever he’d block someone.
it was even better when he was teasing someone, the sly grin on his face made you laugh - he could be a jerk but at least he was your jerk.
he never knew what you were doing most of the time, always that you were on your phone or drawing in your sketchbook for quick sketches.
he found out though when he came round yours after not being there for a couple of weeks, your room had your drawing of him strewn over the place - not expecting him to come round
“Tch, are you stalking me now or something?”
he’s teasing of course, but he can’t help but grin at your blushing face as you quickly deny it
“Relax. its cute. I didn’t know you liked drawing me so much.”
he’s teasing again and you’re tempted to kick him out your house as you’re rushing around to grab all the drawings
Tsuki continues to grin at you before he spots drawing of the other player and then hes scowling
“Hey.”
He walks up to you, grabbing your chin and tilting your head up to look at him
“Stop drawing them. You should draw me if you’re going to be in the club so often.”
He’ll shrug it off and act like it was nothing, blushing lightly whilst the blush on your cheek is more heavy
but soon you’re grinning because Tsuki was j e a l o u s
oh how the tables have turned
in all honesty though, you’ll continue drawing the other boys but your focus will always be on Tsukishima
and although he’d rather you put ALL your attention on him, he’ll live with most of it.
for now.
you start to give him some of your best drawings, since he knows now.
he absolutely loves your drawings, grinning and showing off the small ones that he’d ‘accidentally’ leave in his note book.
will show off to Tanaka and Noya just to annoy them
“Oh whoops I seem to have left this drawing my girlfriend drew of me in my sports shorts how silly of me”
you get requests to draw them and Tsuki is enjoying the chaos he’s creating
“Sorry, she only draws me.”
you’ll end up giving the boys some drawings, just to stop the arguing
you once took a group picture and had drawn it over the next week on a big A2 piece pf paper, giving it to the boys to put in the club room
and they did
Highkey Tanaka and Noya nearly cried
Tsuki loved it. both the picture you’d drawn
and the image of Tanaka and Noya crying
no way was that image disappearing from his head anytime soon
but in the end, he was the one who had you.
and he loved it, more than bullying his teammates

A2 wakes to a searing pain in their wrists and ankles and a disorienting sinking sensation, as if their stomach is about to drop through their back. Their body sways back and forth, dangling from whatever holds their arms and legs in place. They slowly open their eyes, fighting past exhaustion and caked mud, and see a mangrove canopy come into focus, along with their hands and feet bound to a thick branch with rough, hempen rope. Panic shoots through their body and they try to tug at the ropes with what strength they can muster in this position. All they succeed in is digging the coarse rope into their skin further.
They hiss quietly as they become more aware of their pain and the world around them. There’s multiple sets of footsteps that break through the din of nature, the clattering of wood and bone against each other, and whatever language their captors are speaking. Some of the women, clad in bone and hide armor, glare at A2 as they struggle but make no move to stop them yet.
Despite the hopelessness of the situation, a desperate escape plan begins to brew in A2’s head. If they can at least break through the ropes around their wrists then they could twist themselves around enough to undo the ones on their legs. They’d have to be quick; the witches are watching every so often, but seem to be confident that their prey can’t escape. Maybe A2 can use that to their advantage.
Straining their chest and arms, A2 pulls themself up to their tied wrists and bites at the ropes. Whatever the material is tastes horrific, like mud and rotten bone, but it’s brittle and easily sheared apart. With their mouth full of rope, they gnaw at their restraints like a desperate rat. Each bite makes the rope’s grip looser and looser, their teeth easily pulling it to pieces. The more success they find the more anxious they get, caution being replaced by frantic desperation.
Suddenly, one of the large warrior women shouts something in her harsh tongue. A2 hisses a curse in their own native tongue, before the witch slams her club into A2’s skull. They don’t even get to finish their insult before their world slips into darkness.
This time, A2 awakens to a vile stench and an ache in their whole body.
There isn’t one source they can place the smell at. It is an acrid melding of mud, stagnant water, feces, and corpses. The sting of smoke lingers in the air as well, but it’s different than a typical campfire, more harsh. The witches aren’t burning wood.
A2 cracks their eyes open once more, this time to the sight of a strange village settled in a rare firm stretch of mud. A well-worn path of soft mud and stone twists through the mangroves into a clearing; a barren pit of sludge dotted with structures constructed of gnarled branches and uncut boulders and decorated with grim trophies; skulls, horns, skins, and dried organs. Animal hides cover the roofs and hang above doors; bones and skulls provide support for long leather pelts. In fact, whatever isn’t made of wood or stone is made from bones and hides. Crude benches and stools stand above piles of corpses freshly picked, bare of all meat and skin, leaving bloodied skeletons to dry in the sun. It doesn’t take long for A2 to discern what this means for them.
The witches don’t seem to notice that they’re awake, and A2 plans to keep it that way for as long as they can. If they can get their bearings and search out some kind of escape route, then at least they’ll have a plan in some capacity.
Exploiting a weakness in the guard patrols doesn’t seem like it’ll be viable. There are countless women wandering around the village doing every sort of task available. Some are weaving, carving bones, and mending furniture; others watch the few children that scamper around the proud huntresses and their catch, yelling at the kids if they get too close; and even more skin and gut fresh kills, tossing the bones aside to the ever growing piles. Though only a few of them have weapons, gruesome crude blades and spears similar to the ones the huntresses carry, there’s enough to give A2 pause while they contemplate just fighting their way through the village. There’s no telling how many of the witches are competent fighters or archers.
A2 considers simply transforming and flying away as soon as their limbs are free. The canopy isn’t as dense here as it is in the untouched sections of The Bog, and even if they couldn’t fit through the branches they could at least jump from tree to tree and glide into denser portions. But with the witches’ pet rats and arrows that could be a problem too…
Before they can decide on a plan of action that wouldn’t immediately fail, something sinister comes into view.
A wooden cage, surrounded by skulls on pikes and inward pointing spikes, covering a gaping hole in the earth. The stench of feces, urine, and death attracts a swarm of huge flies that hover around the cage, enticed by the smells that make A2 gag. Another witch, this one wearing a mask made of a rat’s hollowed out head, grumbles something to the huntresses in a raspy voice before opening a section of the wooden cage. A feverish chill runs down A2’s spine as desperate, longing moans drift out of the pit.
The huntresses cut A2 down from the log suddenly; they land in the mud with a wet splat, before a brutal kick sends them over the edge and plummeting into the filth below. They land in a puddle of murk that seeps into their scales, clothes, and hair. Whatever the fluid is sticks to them in sick clumps of… A2 doesn’t want to know. It stinks of so many things that it’s hard to pin down a single source.
It’s hard to stand. Whenever they put their foot down the ground itself gives, either sinking and engulfing their foot or sliding out from under them. It takes a few attempts, one of which has A2 falling face first into the grime, but they eventually manage to stand and get their bearings. Their first order of business is to toss away the scraps of rope that still cling to their wrists and ankles. The second, is to address the men huddled together on the other side of the pit.
If A2 didn’t know any better, they would have thought that the men were all the same person. Each one has the same terrified, starved, desperate look about them. Like rats, they think. The men are covered with festering sores all over their bodies, some crudely wrapped with scraps of cloth just as filthy as the rest of them. Only one still has hair, but not much. Whatever is left looks as if it would fall out at any given moment. The same can be said for their skin, discolored, sagging, barely hanging onto their skeletons. Each man looks like they’re on the brink of death, or on the brink of rushing A2 and devouring them whole.
“Poor soul…” One man, the oldest it seems, says and steps forward from the group. “What is your name?”
A2 stares at him, watching his gnarled hands and twisted fingernails. They say nothing, but they stand tall, unwavering. They can’t show weakness.
The old man looks at them with sunken, sad eyes. “Can you speak, child?” His voice is raspy but gentle and nostalgic. It reminds them of one of their village elders.
They nod, but still refuse to speak. The other men relax a little but still stay close together, shivering against each other. The old man shivers too, but manages a calm facade as he steps closer to them.
A2 can’t read this man, or at the very least there’s too much to read on his wrinkled sagging face. There’s a sadness etched into every crease on his skin, but he smiles with such warmth that they wonder how this kindness survived down here. “How long have you been here?” they ask, their voice low and cautious.
The old man sighs, “I have seen at least three full moons come and go. The others arrived not long after myself.”
A2 watches as the other men begin to approach them and the old man as he explains his story.
“I used to be a cleric for the theocracy,” he says, sitting cross-legged on the ground. “I was escorting a group of Old Empire refugees to the Blessed Grounds and cut through a part of this place. Obviously, it did not end well.” His expression darkens, eyes fixated on the mud. “The lambs were the lucky ones. They were taken by the swamp creatures well before the Bog Witches found me.” He gestures to the other men, who now sit beside the old man. “These knights were snatched from their troop as they cut through the Bog as well.”
A chill runs through A2’s body, whether from fear or the cold mud seeping through their clothes they can’t tell. Part of their mind runs through escape plans while the other festers in a creeping dread that weighs down their limbs.
“Have any of you tried to get out?” they ask, though in their heart they know the answer.
The old man shakes his head. “I am afraid not. The walls are too slick to climb, even when the knights were fit. The witches only toss whatever rotten scraps they do not eat our way, to keep us weak.” His gaze shifts to a pile of shattered bones in the shadows of the pit. “Not even our dead can give us strength.”
A2 suppresses the bile that rises in their throat.
He rises to his feet, his joints creaking and straining under his emaciated body, and gently takes A2’s hand in his. “I am so sorry, child,” he says in a voice that wavers with the effort.
They rip their hand away, the old man’s warped fingernails scratching at their scales. He flinches away from their scowl and their bared teeth.
“I won’t die here,” they growl. “I am not going to die here.”
The starving men leave A2 alone for the rest of the day. It isn’t that A2 holds any malice to them, but to see these men waste away in a pit of their own filth is more than infuriating. There has to be a way to escape, and they won’t sit idle and wait to die. They pace around the perimeter of the pit, searching for stones, branches or roots, anything that the men could use to climb out. For a moment, they consider the broken bones of the consumed dead, but they refuse to touch them. Even looking at them makes A2 nauseous.
A2 carves a rut into the ground with their pacing, but losing themself in their thoughts has allowed time to pass much faster. Soon soft rays of moonlight filter down through the trees into the filthy prison. The chatter of witches and their animals fades into the darkness as the nocturnal Bog creatures begin their own songs. The torchlight that surrounded the rim fades to embers that barely illuminate the wooden bars of the cage. All of the men huddle together in a strange sleeping arrangement, possibly to stave off the cold. Besides the spasmic shivers that run through their bodies A2 would mistake them for dead.
If they are to escape, now is the time.
Their body feels tense. Each movement makes their bones creak and muscles strain. Perhaps it’s because they haven’t eaten in a bit, or the heavy, stagnant air of this place, but their mind feels clouded. For a moment they toy with the idea of waiting till they have a clear head, but they grit their teeth and launch themself into the air.
With a brilliant flash of light their form erupts into feathers and claws. The wooden cage shatters into pieces as the dragonic form of A2 bursts from their prison. From below, the starving men gasp as they wake to find the cage destroyed and a red feathered dragon launching into the air. A pair of mange-riddled dogs tied to a post of the ruined cage jolt awake, howling and snarling at the intruding creature. A2 makes short work of them with their claws and beak. The meat still tastes like rotten mud.
A2 takes stock of their surroundings as they touch down just beside the pit’s edge. Eerie silence replaces the din of nature. Whatever animals must have left at the sound of a larger creature, but soon A2 hears noises coming from the huts surrounding the pit. The moving of furniture, footsteps, and muffled voices. The witches would be coming out soon.
“Hey! Wait!!!”
Just as A2 readies themself to take to the air, a pained, desperate voice calls out to them. From down below, one of the starved men looks up at them with wide eyes.
“Please!! Take us too!! Don’t leave us here!!”
A2 gazes down at the man and every part of their body begs to bolt and leave these men for dead. The starved men are dying anyway, they’d most likely die in The Bog from starvation or some hungry animal if A2 does pull them out. And yet they find themself crouching beside the edge and reaching down their neck as far as they can. The man jumps, his fingertips just barely brushing the tip of their beak. They growl and hiss, the urge to abandon the men growing by the second, but they dig the claws on their wings into the mud and lean further in.
Suddenly a bellowing voice echoes across the village and a massive shape charges them. A2’s head snaps up just as a large net is thrown above them. Just before the weighted net traps them again, they revert back to their human form and dive out from under it. They skid across the slick mud a few feet before pushing themself back to their feet. Looking behind them, A2 sees a witch that easily stands over eight feet tall lumbering across the village plaza to retrieve the thrown net. She locks eyes with A2, bloodshot, collapsed pupils filled with malice. Not keen on getting caught again, they dart around the side of the pit to put an uncrossable space between them and her.
Something catches A2’s eye: the glint of black iron in the moonlight. A few strides away, discarded amongst a pile of filthy clothes, is their sword. The hulking witch seems to pick up on A2’s idea and bellows something they can only assume are slurs. She leans forward and in two thunderous steps launches herself over the mouth of the pit. A2 wastes no time, diving for their sword just as the witch lands. Mud and rotten plant matter splashes in all directions under the weight of the witch, but the bog’s floor gives too much, engulfing her feet in the soft mud.
The witch lunges for A2, the mud holding her feet steady. A2 throws their sword up as a shield against her, but the colossal witch falls, her sharpened fingernails just inches from the black iron blade. With a short step forward and a burst of furious strength A2 drives the sword’s point straight through her shoulder. The witch shudders and slumps forward with a dying gurgle, blood and mucus pouring out of her mouth.
A grim, violent pride rises in A2’s chest as they wrench the sword free from the witch’s corpse. It surges through their veins like fire and urges them to unleash it upon the village. This place had captured them, wronged them, disempowered them, and the whole of this wretched coven needed to pay for it. All the huntresses, healers, artisans, and children.
However, just as their rampage begins, a crude arrow dripping with poisons lands in their shoulder. Before the pain registers in their head, their arm goes limp. Their sword falls from their hand into the mud and no matter how much they try they can’t make their arm move. Then the pain ignites A2’s arm from the inside. They fall to their knees and scream, their arm thrashing wildly outside of their control. Their vision blurs and pulses in time with their rapid heartbeat, the poison and pain spreading further with each beat. Something yanks on their hair and with their body rigid with pain they cannot resist being dragged back towards the gaping hole in the ground.
Whoever found them, and most likely shot them, tosses them callously back into the pit. The first thing they see when they open their eyes are the sad, hungry eyes of the starving men they should have left behind.

Headcanon about X and Zero’s song
Okay! If you guys wanted to talk about X and Zero’s song. I wanted to write this headcanon for a WHILE.
Of course, this is another long one, so be prepared, mates
They, of course, start discovering this song shortly after they officially established their relationship. They head to bed for the night in X’s room, since he actually has a mattress in his charging tube, and it’s big enough for X to have actual sleeping positions like humans.
Zero barely fits in there with him, and soon they’d have a room for just the two of them so they won’t have to just go to X’s room a lot of the time. But when X is awakened by a nightmare, he couldn’t sleep, so he leaves Zero to sleep and goes to walk to hopefully get him more at ease and cuddle in Zero’s arms again.
When he passes the Rec Room, however, he discovers Iris is playing a video game. He investigates and checks it out, greeting her and the like, asking why she’s up. She can’t sleep, and X let’s her know he can’t sleep due to a nightmare and tells her about it. She gives him some comfort and lets X watch her play for a moment. He found out she was playing NieR: Automata (very amazing game, I might add). She was playing 2B’s route for the millionth time, as she is her favorite character, and A2 being a tie.
When she hits the City Ruins area, X is enchanted by the song that plays it's Medium level with voices playing.
Iris notices and hangs around in the area for a minute before asking X about it. He was so enchanted, he didn’t even pay attention to what Iris was actually doing to let X hear the song more. The Neo Blue Bomber snaps back to reality and realizes he must have been goofy looking being enchanted by video game music. Iris tells him that’s nonsense, since she loves the song herself. She stays idle, fishing in the river for a little while to let X hear the song a lot more, while Iris sings the lyrics to the song. After hearing it all, X starts singing with her. She even lets him play a little bit, and he loves it.
He then asks her if the lyrics mean anything, then being told the language is made of five existing ones, but the lyrics don’t mean anything. Which disappoints X. But Iris then tells him that he can interpret the lyrics to anything he choses, since canon-wise, they don’t mean anything.
X then perked up and told her that he thinks the song would mean someone showing them the light and going hand in hand with that person, going towards the light together. It warmed up Iris’ heart hearing that, knowing how artistic X can be, which embarrasses the Blue Bomber a little. He’s then encouraged to tell Zero about it, since she imagines them going towards the light, hand in hand together. X then blushes and lets her know he’d tell Zero and thanks her for being his company, she nods and thanks him back while going back to playing.
X then comes back to his room and sees Zero awake, worry shooting through him. Zero tells him he had a nightmare, and X tells him he had one earlier, which was why he was out. He nestled next to his Midnight Ripper again and tells him about his meeting with Iris and the song he learned from the game she was playing. He then tells him about the lyrics not meaning much canon-wise, but then saying what he thought the lyrics meant and what Iris told him.
Zero blushed to that and actually agreed. Since X saved his life when they met, affectionately touching his cheek, making X blush as well. X then sings the song and Zero starts doing it after a while. Zero liked it that much that he might as well download the actual track. The Quiet version, the Medium version, and Dynamic version, all with and without vocals. He gives all versions to X so he’d listen to it himself and he thanks him for them. They then try to cuddle and try to sleep again.
Sometime after that, they train one day and Zero has an idea. Since he’s been playing the song on his guitar for almost two months with X next to him, both singing the song on occasion as well, he thought they should have the song be something special to them, since it’s starting to become that. X likes the idea, and Zero even takes it a step further. If X was comfortable with it, whenever they unjustly separate going on missions together, they’d sing the song back and forth, so they’d eventually find each other. Of course, they would communicate with the comms on their helmets, but especially if they don’t work, they really have to rely only on their voices.
X feels embarrassed at first, since his voice is quiet whenever he sings. Zero would want to help him with it so they can find each other in the future and the Neo Blue Bomber.    agrees to it.
They practice, and they have two or three instances where they separate because of mechanaloids tossing one or the other away or by other means and it’s greatly helped them. One instance where their comms worked fine and they can hear each other’s voices afterwards. Another was when Zero’s comm was busted and couldn’t communicate well so they really had to rely on each other’s voices, and a third instance was when the communications were jammed, so they couldn’t communicate at all, relying on each other’s voices fully.
When the Giga City incident had taken place, and they duo had been unjustly separated by Mavericks, hoping Zero wasn’t dead, X kept on singing for days and days on end, meeting up with Spider and the others along the way. He didn’t tell them their relationship right away, mainly focusing on the mission and worrying about Zero on top of it. When they find out Zero’s alive, X continues to sing again, telling the others about his relationship with Zero. Making them more determined to reunite the duo.
When they finally did, hearing Zero’s singing voice, X rushed to the area Zero seemed to be and helped him in the nick of time. They took in a reuniting hug, a few peppered kisses, and everything was okay. Zero was alive. He didn’t want to lose him again. Not since X1 arc. Well, not until X5, he loses him again.
X then tries to sing the song after Zero’s death, but he could never finish the song without crying. Not with how sentimental the song was to him and Zero, with how they used the song to find each other and they sang it together when they were alone. Iris then helped sing it to him so X can cry and remember Zero.
But when Zero came back, and they had a quiet moment to themselves where they didn’t get triggered by their trauma, they’d sing together again. X almost cried but kept it together, letting tears slide down his face and holding his lover’s hand as they cuddled together under the stars. Glad they’re just together again. They sing the song together more often ever since. Damn, how many times am I gonna say “together” in the paragraph, eh? lmao
That’s it!! Hope you guys enjoyed it!

English Commentary on a Chinese LuaSTG Tutorial Pt 3
This part is about the remaining videos.
= = =
Video 4: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1st411N7Kg?p=4 tl;dr Some bits are unclear but from what I can tell, there are sections about symbols, infinite loops and sound
Content: There's about five parts / sections to this video.
The first part / stretch from 0:00 - 1:29 seems to be about symbols you can use in LuaSTG. If you've read the other posts, you'll know that the subtraction sign can be used to signify negative number, but it can also be used as a subtraction sign in formulas.
The other symbols are exactly as you can see.
+ is addition
*(asterisk) is for multiplication
/ (slash) is for division
Circular brackets are... circular brackets. In case you've forgotten high school maths, it's related to that "order of operations" stuff. I think it's also brought up to establish "this program uses circular brackets and not square brackets (that other programs might use)
I'm not too sure what ^ means, however. Likewise with %. My maths knowledge is pretty rusty... this unironically might be my first application of the topic since finishing high school ;\
I do remember (vaguely) something about percentages really being fractions. Maybe % is related to division in that case? I think ^ also means "to the power of". To the power of what? Dunno, just look it up. I told ya, I don't know maths.
= = =
The second part starts at around 1:57. I actually don't know what's happening in this part, so I'm skipping over it. A gentle reminder that the complicated setup in their example is because they're using the legacy LuaSTG editor. The Sharps editor can replicate the same thing wiht far less hassle using the "Create Simple Bullet Group" node (a node missing from the legacy editor)
= = =
At 03:00 (part 3 of the video) they bring up infinite loops. I'm not gonna make specific commentary on this because this is very basic level stuff. Here's a very useful link that can explain the concept better than I can. It's specifically for Danmakufu but the concept remains exactly the same. tl;dr don't make the game shoot bullets infinitely without pauses in between, and don't make the game wait infinitely either.
= = =
At 4:00 is part 4 of the video. I'm not actually sure what the topic is. I was certain it was about interval (reminder that interval doesn't exist for Repeat nodes in later editors, so it'd be about Wait nodes), but I actually really don't know. I will just comment on interesting stuff in the examples given.
At 4:52, you can see a formulas used in place of a value (i.e. increment 360/15. 360 divided by 15 is 24. If you put in 24 instead of 360/15 you'll get the exact same result).
At 5:40, you can see the Repeat node + Variable being used to determine the bullet spawning position. You have x%384-192 (value/position x on the grid) then 120 (position y on the grid). It looks like this:
(x%384-192,120)
It's basically taking the same concept from the last video (using Repeat + Variable) but instead of applying it to angle, it's being applied to the horizontal position of the bullet).
At 5:55, they use the Repeat with a Variable to increase the velocity / speed of each subsequent bullet in a bullet group. This is an example of another easier feature in the Sharps editor, as the Create Simple Bullet Group node has a Velocity begin + Velocity end feature.
At 6:01 is something interesting. They've placed a Repeat with a Variable instead of a Repeat with a Variable. You have a Bullet node, inside of a Repeat Node, inside another Repeat node. Take a closer look at the Variables; the second Repeat node's variable is ANOTHER variable [i.e. a2's initial value is a1's initial value]
I don't actually know what the tutorial is trying to explain but this process of putting a Repeat within a Repeat seems to be necessary when trying to use a Variable within a Variable. I've actually tried replicating the example with only one Repeat (i.e. use 1 Repeat Node, set Number of Variables to 2, Variables A1 and A2) but this just caused an error.
It seems that if you're going to use a Variable within a Variable, you will need at least two Repeat nodes; one establishing the first variable (A1), and a child node establishing the second variable (A2) that will make use of the first variable.
At 7:05 they go into adding sound. I don't know what else to add, this is pretty simple stuff. The video does conveniently mention which sound effects are the actual "bullet" sound effects (i.e. tan00, tan01, tan02, kira00, kira01 and kira02).
= = =
Video 5: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1st411N7Kg?p=5 tl;dr it's about RNG
They go into some Random Number Generators. This has been covered in Ryann1908's tutorials already; one in his longer tutorial (where he uses the function to mimic Sakuya's Eternal Meek spellcard) and one in his shorter tutorial (when it's been used to randomly pick a color for Marisa's stars shot). I've also mentioned Ran:Sign before; Ran:Sign is probably the least useful of these, because unlike Float or Int, where you can put a minimum and maximum value, Ran:Sign can only generate two values: either a positive 1 or negative 1. There is one parameter that actually benefits from this: throw it into a Bullet's Rotational Velocity parameter and see what happens.
This is all so basic that even the sparse LuaSTG Wiki has info on it.
= = =
Video 6: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1st411N7Kg?p=6 tl;dr The tutorial recreates two attacks from Touhou 7
This one was actually hard to understand until I recreated the pattern for myself. I don't know if this is exactly what is being said, but for the Chen section of the video:
When they're highlighting the slowest bullets, I'm 90% sure it's to say that these are the first bullets to fire. No, you read that right. The slowest bullets are the first bullets generated in the pattern. The secret sauce to this pattern is that each bullet has a higher velocity than the previous one, thanks to the magic that is Repeats and Variables.
When they're highlighting the fastest bullets, I think it's to mention those are the last bullets spawned. This should be true if we apply the logic from the previous section; if each bullet has a higher velocity than the previous one, the last bullets to spawn HAVE to have the highest velocity / be the fastest moving.
When they're highlight a single wave / barrage, I think it's to mention how the repeats work. With the way they've used Repeat, each wave is 15 bullets each, and the waves are fired 6 times (in 6 different angles).
You can recreate this by copying the same setup, just make sure you add a 2 frame Wait as a child of the first Repeat. It should go:
>Repeat 15 times >>Wait 2 frames >>Repeat 6 times >>>Create Simple Bullet
The Youmu recreation is a bit different. The "slowest bullets being the first bullets spawned" are the same. Unlike the "15 bullet barrage fired in 6 angles" with Chen's attack, it's actually "4 bullets fired from 16 angles" which definitely confused me (when I first saw the video, I assumed it was "16 bullets fired in 4 barrages). Note how they use Repeat + Variables again to decide the X and Y coordinates of the pattern.
There's a small section after the Youmu recreation. I do not know what it's explaining.
In the final section of the video, they show off a button that no longer exists in the Sharps editor that used to be in-between Pack Project and Run Project. From the design of the symbol, it seems to have been related to the Stage nodes?
= = =
Video 7: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1st411N7Kg?p=7 tl;dr ...I don't know what this video is about. It also doesn't need a tl;dr since it's only 30 seconds long...
Content: I really couldn't tell you what this video is trying to say. The first part uses some sort of "If Else" node which is something I'm especially out of my depth on. All I know about the "If Else" node is that you can use it to do multi-phase spellcard attacks (like most Stage 6 final spellcard attacks a la Miko or Shinmyoumau).
The rest of the video seems to be about making the Chen recreation more complete. They make two Repeats of Chen attacks (the first repeat is the one we saw before, with Orange bullets; the second repeat has Green bullets and fires in the opposite direction by changing the increment to a -7 instead of a +7). The attack also seems to have more RNG, as a Ran:Float has been added into the formula (a=Ran:Float(0,360), increment 7 -> a1=a, increment 60)
= = =
Video 8: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1st411N7Kg?p=8
tl;dr ...dunno. I think it's about running multiple tasks? It's a shortie. It's also the last tutorial in this series...
Content: The last video is a bit confusing. Considering the example shown at the end, where Mokou is firing two streams of bullets (the green bullets moving in a counter clockwise direction, and the blue swords in a clockwise direction), my guess is that it's about running two separate Repeat + Variable streams of bullets.
I read this in a different tutorial, but you can basically run multiple tasks at the same time. This knowledge can be very helpful if, for example, you ever wanted to make a boss use the Move To / Move By node while also firing bullets. I *think* that they're saying "you can do these two streams at the same time if you run them in different tasks". But I'm not 100% sure that's the case.
And to be honest, I don't think that, if that is what they're saying, that it's necessary. At least it's not for newer versions of LuaSTG. I know for sure that you could run those two streams (purple and cyan) in the same Repeat node if it was the Sharps editor. All you'd have to do is establish two Variables in the Repeat node, then give the separate Bullets / Bullet Group a specific node. Put both bullets as the child of a Repeat node and bam. That's it.
The last thing I'll note is that this video was last made in 2019. So the chances of a continuation seem slim...
= = =
Conclusion
So that was one tutorial down. There are actually three other Chinese tutorials, though this tutorial is the only one that is in a video format. The other tutorials, especially the one about coding in LuaSTG are harder to follow just bc of this difference.
If I get the time, I'll try to do commentaries on the other tutorials. I at the very least, plan to cover ONE of the other Chinese tutorials, since I've been able to follow that specific tutorial very easily (it's this one. It has animated gifs and while it goes into some complicated concepts, it's been more rewarding to follow than the others).
You can find the other Chinese tutorials on the LuaSTG Shoutwiki. Note that while it shows 2 video tutorials, it's actually only 1 (the one we just covered) since the other video tutorial is no longer available on Bilibili

Alright! Finally got time again to shoot you some questions for the ask meme. For Lucy: A1, 2, 9, 14, 24. B1, 13, 16. C3, 4, 6. D2, 3. E2, 4. F2, 5, 10. G2. H1, 6, 8. I1. L2, 4, 9. Also for Harrison, finally someone who can use the K questions... K1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10?
Hell yeah long post coming and i’m so happy with the K section,
Lucy:
A1. What of the Meyers-Briggs personality types they most fit into? INFP, ENFT, et cetera…
I actually took a test thinking how she would answer and i think i got it perfectly right. I wouldn’t pick it better just by reading all of them i think. She came out as Turbulent Entrepreneur (ESTP-T) which feels ok. “ Rules were made to be broken” - hell they were. Also “ If Entrepreneurs aren’t careful though, they may get too caught in the moment, take things too far, and run roughshod over more sensitive people, or forget to take care of their own health and safety.“
Judging by her action and the way of living she is like that. Going all the way, having hard time just by staying idle and ohh yee taking things too far without thinking of consequences. Like chasing an enemy and realizing she left her support far in the back and then dealing with difficulties by herself. Constantly going careless in combat, forgetting her own safety, thinking she will make it anyway but it comes back biting her in the ass.
Also she is not smart but she can see minor hidden things, be it while cracking some password on terminal or spotting who in the crowd wants to stab her in the back just by the change of their face expression so she might be stupid but still outsmart some folks and mechanics out there and that fits with the nature of the job she had before the war.
A2. What alignment are they? Chaotic neutral, lawful evil, et cetera…
I never played DnD games and so on so this one is hard but Neutral Evil - she is aware of her being on the bad side of a coin and is willing to do whatever it takes to make her wishes come true even if it means killing someone but she still have some self restrains and won’t go against the allies she is currently working with and friends she made on the way and of course innocent creatures. She has some base etiquette rules and isn't rotten to the bone but when she wants something nothing will stop her no matter the cost as long as it doesn’t strike her out of the game of harms current company. She is bad but not for sake of doing evil shit or proving something but just to do what she wants and get what she wants even if blood will spill.
A9. Does your OC make a lot of excuses? For themselves? Others?
She will sure make a lot of excuses for herself after fucking shit up or going way too ahead in combat. But only for herself. She is the type of pointing finger at others while tugging and biting her tongue just not to admit she wronged someone or something and avoid too many questions or yelling at.
A14. Is your character empathetic?
Despite being a bitch she is empathetic. But might show it a bit differently...like in a page i wrote for Halloween with that bunny mask. She didn’t chop that man only because he grabbed her ass but because he was using many other women poor financial situation just to have some easy sexy time and she did feel bad for them so...her empathy stroke in a solution of killing him instead of only knocking him out and caging. If someone would harass Lizzie or...i dunno Hector, someone she considers slightly weaker at standing up for themselves and is in her “social” circle or society part then she will show empathy by stabbing those who bother them with a fork in a eye, a bit extreme but that’s how she understands empathy. Someone is chaining and kicking a dog at settlement? She will chain that man onto the bridge and let him hang and die slowly and take a dog in Pack care. Gage complains that his gun got broken in a fight and can sense some sadness, she will run for a stealing caps heist to buy new one. So...she feels empathy but her answer to it can be...well unusual, brutal and extreme.
A24. What are some of your OC’s biggest personal obstacles? This could be emotional, physical, social… Are they aware of it? Are they trying to overcome it?
Type of question i hope i understood correctly :))
Fear of failing to deliver is her biggest personal obstacle. She was always scared, since childhood to fail at meeting certain expectations, be in it school for her mother who would change her mind bazillion times due to mental illness, then Harrison and fear of his eventual punishment mixed with mental abuse if she doesn’t carry her mission to the end, with Ian it was fear of failing at being the good loving partner due to her secrets and then comes whole town of raiders with Gage on top who have expectations of her and promise of certain small paradise if she delivers but...these fears always pushes her into actions more than she has to and it exhaust her mentally and can sometimes prove deadly, ending up in injuries that could have been avoided. She is aware of this but because it carried through her whole life its unavoidable.
Also she doesn’t interact much with a friendly society groups because even if she knows she is bad its not something she actually likes to hear. Coming to a small town just with intentions to have a drink and imagining that people will only show her a pistol barrel and tell her to fuck off because she is from within raider circle fills her with doubt so strong she just tends to avoid this kind of meetings.
How was the saying: “Don't tell a psychopath they're a psychopath, it upsets them” and she will get deeply upset.
B1. Do they believe you have to give respect to get it, or get respect to give it?
Get respect to give it. She doesn’t trust that people will respect her back if she puts effort so she won’t show respect even to great president of whatever wastes because she also doesn’t care if someone respect her but if they pull a hand out first she will shake it back. Her life is too risky and careless to think about gaining someone’s respect first.
B13. Do they have a large or small group of friends?
If she would consider all nuka town her friends then its big but...nope, small group. Its mostly Gage (even if they are partners they can be friends too), Lizzie, William, well...Mags too and along with that Mason later on once she gets his loyality and a few traders from which she keep connections with Maddox, Chip and Shelbie. From Far Harbor for sure Allan would be easy to gain as a friend. Longfellow is just a friend grandad <3. Harrison cannot be questioned, too scary to reject him. From Commonwealth i can’t yet get idea where she could get the best friend circle. Well aside from that whatever other oc’s out there who accept her bitchiness and way of being :)) but i don’t think she would make many friends out there, she is...well plain simple and dangerous.
B16. Does your OC like to be the center of attention or more in the mix?
Definitely in the center of attention, since she couldn’t be back then. Now that crime and killing is fully legal and there is no police chase other than some disgusted by her behavior minutemen she can be a in the center of a show and she likes it. A circus ring leader, hell yeah...well raiders can be clowns too from time to time. And let’s not start with parties and free time. She’s the first to get up on table to dance. It gets her a bit to realize things she can get away with but once she does she only misses there is no spotlight at the end of the fight, shining on her.
C3. Is it important for them to be with people (socially, intimately, whatever) whose major ideological tenets align with their own?
Major indeloghit....tents what? Good lord, i swear i’m too stupid for these kind of words but good i keep the dictionary close to me, right in the next tab.
Big yes. It’s not many people like her out there and she doesn’t want to flip her coin back to being good and peaceful towards rules of the world, she simply isn’t able to mentally change back anymore so in order to keep feeling like she still has a hole to belong to she needs to spend time with people like her to also boost her confidence that she isn’t the only one with broken mind out there seeking completion of her wishes through darker path. And knowing so isn’t leaving her in fear she will need to change her ways of life.
C4. Do they consider themselves superior or more important than anyone else? Lesser?
No. Even is she is the Overboss she rather rejects that title and prefers to be just a business partner with Gage. She doesn’t seek and need to feel important or superior, she only wants to feel useful around people she decided to blend in with and have a purpose, nothing else. The fact that she can strike orders around doesn’t fill her heart nor mind with some higher importance or value above other. Also she doesn’t considers her enemies lesser even knowing her skills, its just bad approach that can easily get one killed and she prefers stays on a same line with others. Be it friends or foes.
C6. What do they do when they see someone asking for money or food? If they ignore them, why? If they help, how so?
Depends in what state that person is, she was the liar herself so she can spot one if its an actual person in need or just lazy poor soul. She will usually tho just toss a few caps and walk away without listening or hearing more from that person. She doesn’t want to struggle with a morality remaining deep in her brain if she did right or not so she will just deal with it fast and walk away, telling them to fuck off if they will follow her. These kind of people are like those annoying reminders in a shape of beggar poking her and making think if she still has some pure humanity left so...she wants to be just done with that part. But animal coming up to her is a different deal, here humanity will always strike unless its a seagull stealing her meal, then her humanity part will shrink and there will be a rock thrown in the air after that birb, as a survival contest.
D2. Do they believe in an afterlife?
She never gave it a longer thought. She cares about here and now but if she would meet someone knowledgeable in that topic she would be willing to open her ears for few minutes longer and put the knife down. She doesn’t rejects religious topics as long as someone is not brushing a saint books or whatever right in her face. She has an open mind on more than just a mortal topics mostly because of Harrison.
D3. How comfortable are they with the idea of death?
She wasn’t scared of death before the bombs and when wandering through wasteland because she just didn’t care for her life and maybe that’s what made her most effective but this changed once she realized she can finally live a life she secretly wanted but was restricted before. Her strong desire of finally rejecting the dying part is what caused certain being to finally break away from her ;> well i wrote about it in last page so yassss
E2. Which of the nine types of intelligence is your OC strongest in? Weakest? (Linguistic, existential, naturalist, et cetera)
The strongest is surely the Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence, she was trained to the bone and with her careless nature she is mostly depended on her physical skills and putting them into perfect timing. Even if she got a bit rusty after bombs the return of Harrison will bring her back into the right gears of phasing like speed and combat thinking.
Weakest could be probably the Intra-personal Intelligence mostly because even if she understand her actions she isn’t very good at analyzing it any deeper other than “i want that man’s money cus i want that”, i guess....i could describe it like that. I cant really get any deeper or more detailed into this because there is for sure one thing i share with Lucy....we are simple minded simpletons but..i might be a bigger one :)))
E4. Did they enjoy school if they went to it?
At the beginning she didn’t enjoy any school as other students would consider her a weirdo because of her mother which would sometimes show up, uncalled at school and act really weird but later when she decided to stand up for herself after meeting Harrison as a kid ....others in school didn’t enjoy that change as much as she became seen as a pretty bully girl being overly extreme into serving “justice”. The only classes she enjoyed tho were gym and biology ones as she wasn’t scared to cut a frog but others seeing her just chopping it like a piece of ham could...weighted on her reputation. Also she always joined like a sport/cheerleader groups to have less problems with teachers as it was bringing school good reputation and she was fairly flexible and with high stamina so it was also easy for her. So from being bullied she became popular bully girl of sort. She got hooked on law later on because she wanted indeed to serve some justice, in a peaceful manner at start. So all in all she didn’t enjoy school at start but then she didn’t mind it as she took business in her hands, a bit over the edge but well...bully with some feelings eh? I don’t have many details as to what exact type of school she would go but another reason she would enjoy sitting at school once she became the one in charge is to spend less time at home with her confusing mother so she would be staying late for some extra gym trainings, sweating her emotions off.
F2. What’s their ideal home look like? Where is it?
In Porter’s rough, dirty yet soft heart stuffed in his sweaty smelly top.
She can call Fizztop an ideal home of sort. The weather in Nuka World strikes her preferences and even since she was strolling with Harrison from time to time there before the war she just loved that place and beside the first deadly visit there they made a good memories there, father and daughter like. She prefers her home to be placed inside the town as she hates sleeping in open spaces even if its a single house on top of a hill. She just feels too lonely and insecure. It’s weird to say that but she feels safer to sleep in a town filled with raiders than alone in the wild.
F5. How handy are they? Can they fix appliances, cars, cabinets, et cetera?
Fairly handy but on a level of fixing a broken car mirror with a duck tape or just gluing shit together hoping it will hold long enough before it breaks again. If she would fix a door handle it would most probably end up upside down on the other side of the door. And if shit breaks again...she will just shrug and glue it same way again or at least add one more layer of duck tape. Sometimes she will try to convince herself she knows what wire to put where when it comes to electric appliances but she only knows cars and car still ain’t a toaster so....electric shortage and fizzy hair incoming. She needed a manual on shoving a cable inside a robot so yeah. But when it comes to fixing clothes she is as good as with cars. Even if some parts can be similar like in car engine of sort she still has hard time to connect the dots if seeing something like half similar. So give her a broken car/truck/any clothing she will swing a wrench or needle and fix that shit in no time but hand her a tv pilot or spoken toaster and she will just look at it and ponder..deeply.
F10. Do they engage in any of the arts? How good do you intend them to be? Would they agree they are?
Arts...with her only painting comes to my mind but not like painting a landscape but more things like a car painting, pack faces and more abstract stuff which she learned again in Sapphire club with Rosey due to many events that were having certain themes so they needed to do body paints and so on.
I don’t know if dancing is any kind of art but i can imagine her discovering that pole dance but on a level of these sport like competitions. Lucy is flexible and has enough strength to try to perform this kind of stuff since from already school times she was doing a lot of gym and sport in general.
As to how good she would be at these probably not like perfectly good to very details because even she doesn’t have need to be horribly good. Needs to be good enough to just make her happy and she doesn’t have high standards in these topics. I dunno why i found that question slightly tricky....
G2. Who makes up your OC’s family, at least the more important members to them?
The only family she had was her mother since her father left once he could no longer bear with her mental issues and bringing stranger men to house and then getting pregnant with her. I didn’t build up yet like a bigger family tree but..yeah it was just her mother and her most of the time.
H1. What is your OC’s orientation, romantic and/or sexual? Has it ever been a source of stress for them? Have they always been pretty sure of their orientation?
She is 100% heterosexual when it comes to her orientation both romantic and sexual. She can flirt with same sex but that would only include situations when she needs to finish her job or reach some other goal, no feelings involved whatsoever.
H6. Has your OC ever cheated on anyone or been cheated on?
She didn’t catch Ian neither Gage to cheat on her. She tends to flirt with other men like William but wouldn’t take it as far as to sleep with him or do it on purpose to hurt her partner feelings so...she doesn’t cheat. She still has SOME backbone.
H8. What’s your OC’s idea of a perfect date?
She doesn’t have high needs when it comes to perfect date topic. As long as it involves alone time together without additional crowd and some beer she doesn’t care if they sit in a fancy bar or on some building stairs. Perfect date is any that includes relaxed talk, joking, alcohol and a happy ending in bed together. Extra points for bringing her nicely cut flower. Despite being bully, killer and involved with raiders she was looking at late evenings at these white/grey romantic movies where couples were just doing simple things, walking late night together and so on, so her perfect date ain’t complicated.
I1. What are their favorite kinds of flavors– Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, creamy, et cetera?
As long as its not slimey and gooey like she’s okay. If something of mentioned above would slip into her food she will just puke it out instantly. She prefers salty and sweet tho as her pre-war diet was mostly like so. Salted hard boiled eggs with grilled tatos topped with pinch of salt again and then 200 years old cotton candy for dessert or potato crisps. She eats meat too but like fried till its crunchy.
L2. What do you consider the biggest themes in your character, if any?
Brain error so i hope i understood this right:
Leaning into the evil side of the society fully confident it’s the only and last right choice to achieve true happiness and satisfy the already croocked mind.
L4. Would you hang out with your OC if you could?
In my real life probably yes but even i would be slightly nervous around her because she tends to bend towards very extreme solutions if some problems would arise or someone would make me angry (due to her empathy) but in fallout universe hell yeah, i’m just not sure i would be in a physical capability to keep up with her but i wouldn’t mind to get a legendary cane..along with it...But yeah, i would like to hang out for a beer and see her beat some stupid folks and maybe give a her a friendly hug to remind her she isn’t that bad and she will be fine....and apologize for burning her hands lol. If she would find out i’m her creator..oh boy, i’m sure she would beat me with my own cane over the head.
L9. How did you come up with your OC?
I had different OC design before but she was actually just a general good joking hero, she even had a brother but that got lost later on and that male oc was left just for MMO’s as an additional character. Then a lot of things happened in my life and because i was gaming since early childhood like Norton times and..the pixelated Blizzard Blackthorne it also affected my rpg and game choices in general, like whole way of thinking since gaming was and is big part of my life. I was curious what would happen if i take my oc through the mental change grinder and push it to the edge, towards losing the patience for justice systems and add a pinch of evil mixed with some trauma to give her some reason to choose that path. And there she is. Her face features didn’t change much, neither body type and so on but her mentality is hell of a different and i just...love her. She isn’t perfect, neither that horribly bad but i’m very pleased with how she came out. I threw a glove and was done with playing hero at some point because of life experiences and she came out of my cauldron as a best way to peacefully calm down. As for Harrison he was suppose to be just a small mention in pre-war diary but for some reason my brain pushed it forward and i really don’t mind him as an extra OC. Besides Lucy needs someone to watch over her.
Allllrighty, Harrison time:
K1. Does your OC have to keep their paranormal aspect (PA) a secret from general society? If so, how? I.e., they can’t discuss their abilities, they have to hide a tail, they have an alter-ego, et cetera. What would happen if society found out about it?
Yes, he has to hide his powers. He is one of a kind and experiment never got finished so his powers are something no one seen before. I’m sure that lab is still buried somewhere near Sanctuary deep in forests containing old data and so on but the place got abandoned and no one found it yet. I can imagine tho that the cryo vault could have been like a last remaining section cut off from the rest as it also was touching a subject of immortality...i mean..a way of not aging. Usually the green smoke will always rise from his body and eyes at times so he prefers to hide his face under the hat and keep fully covered body with that long brown coat and thick gloves. Also he doesn’t look very friendly so it helps him keep folks at distance before they notice something unusual. I can’t imagine how people would react if they knew about his powers but they for sure would be just wary and scared i think. And all in all he has a synth skeleton so more hate from most of the Commonwealth population. He also needs to keep his emotions at check as his powers are driven by a strong sense of desire so if he would really really want to harm someone he would have harder time at controlling his powers before they snap. That’s why he is always so...stoic and calm.
K3. Does your OC have any friends who know about their PA? Any enemies?
Lucy suspected before and she has a memory from childhood, then she finds out herself on a go and Gage also knows because he was present during the event. Later on she tells Lizzie and Chip Morse because she needs help to repair his synth broken body due to how the...separation came out. Harrison doesn’t tell anyone else unless its necessary. The only enemy out there would be the lead scientist if he somehow survived the bombs and is still out there, looking for him.
Also...i didn’t mean to make it like that but its just how it came out due to most...common and fast thought design. That lead scientist had grey hair and wore a black mask on half of his face....and that would make the air even more rotten between...someone particular out there :))
K5. Does your OC feel isolated or unrelatable due to the experience their PA brings with it? If so, how do they deal with it?
He does feel lonely since he is too afraid to meet new people or even spend too much time in a bar. He would mostly stick to lone table in a corner, being too afraid on not controlling his powers if his mind and emotions lose breaks. He was a family man, not perfect father but still, getting that taken away and changing your life 180 degrees can sometimes upset him and the only way to cool down is just to stick to people he can trust which is Lucy and her gang. Its his only family now. He doesn’t push away the idea of trying again, meeting a woman, making a family, being a better father but is just too scared of that. Also he doesn’t need much sleep as normal person so...this doesn’t help him either.
K6. Does their PA cause issues in daily life? I.e., if they’re inhuman in a human universe and they can’t go to a doctor or risk the doctor realizing they are not human, super abilities with physical drawbacks, they don’t have control of their abilities and must keep to themselves, et cetera… If so, how do they feel about it?
It causes him a lot of issues. Despite hot weather he still needs to keep his clothes on to not reveal the power radiating from him. His hat always in crowds, even inside the buildings to not risk shining with his eyes too much. Shades can help tho at times. But people might find it weird, accuse him of being another synth and attack him and that would cause more problems because if he snaps people will see his powers. He needs to keep his head low all the time and just act as a shady dangerous mercenary, out of unnecessary questions and troubles.
K7.Does your OC’s PA affect their dietary habits so that they are unusual or problematic by their society’s standards?
Even if he actually doesn’t need to eat he still will because he isn’t fully synth but just himself in a form of soul trapped in such a body. His eating habits are still the same as they were but..he might overdo his craving at times...eating like a kilograms of food just because he remembered it was his favorite and he wants it now and he will feel the taste and satisfaction but because his stomach isn’t human he doesn’t feel when he is full so....yeah. Eating whole cart of cotton candy at one go. It might feel weird to people who don’t know him but he is a big man so they might assume it’s maybe because of his size...and just being freaking hungry.
K8. What are some routines, if any, of self-care that your OC must engage in that are not typical of their society? I.e., having to file their teeth, maintaining magical rituals, drinking blood…
He needs to meditate like a lot to keep his powers better contained and controlled since they sync with his mindset.. Sometimes he will do it for hours, be it standing, siting, he will just disconnect and meditate.
K9. Does your OC have knowledge that they can’t share with the rest of their world that could improve it if it didn’t cause chaos? I.e., a character from the future knowing about technology not yet invented, but they can’t reveal themselves by sharing it
He is the only one knowing the location of the lab but he keeps that knowledge only to Lucy. He can’t imagine what could happen if they would create armies of....entities like him. Being able to inject soul from body to body could solve a lot of health like issues and give a hell of disabled people new chance but you can never know what direction this could go.
K10. Would your OC give up their PA if they could? Why or why not?
Even if it ruined his life he wouldn’t give it up. He lost his family not because of who she became but because he was fucking irresponsible by taking his son to work and killing them both. His wife was furious and refused to take him home again even if she was freshly pregnant that time. His powers allowed him to protect her anyway without her knowledge and because he is at age he is, these powers still keep him as a extremely dangerous man able to fight. Even if giving it up could give him a better chance of starting a family again he prefers to be able to protect these that are still left in his life than failing or die trying. So he is over the grief and learned to live with how he is, accepting his powers and putting them to good use.

Weird dream I had.
I was trying to steal the Arsen Amulet (From Epithet Erased) from some rich dude. I had two of my friends with me.
I can’t remember how we got the Amulet but we did and now there were police everywhere. Both inside and outside the house so we couldn't use our escape plan.
So I (Now suddenly alone) ran down an unreasonably placed stairwell because this house had three or four floors. At the bottom I found a dark green door that had some movement sensor because it opened automatically when I stood in front of it.
Behind the door was some boring office place. Grey cubicles and more grey decoration. I left my pc on one of the cubicles and moved to a table in the middle of the room. There were some sweets there so i took some.
Then I went out of the green door to look for a way to escape the police. I found nothing so I returned to the boring gray place.
Now on the table there were chocolates. I tried to take some but a girl told me not to because “We’re playing a game with them.” but she said that if I gave her some of the sweets I’d taken earlier then she would give me one. I said no because I really wanted to keep my sweets.
Then some dude (Probably the owner of the house and also the office building like place I was in now) and a bunch of police officers came into the office building like place I was in and started questioning me about where the Amulet was.
The owner asked me if the Amulet was in A1 or A2. In my mind I knew those were the sleeping quarters for the staff here but I had no idea about where the amulet was. One of my friends must’ve had it.
I don’t remember the context but the owner said something about numbers and I wanted to respond “Yeah, that’s how numbers work.” but I didn’t say it in the dream. I could feel my lips moving but it wasn’t my lips in the dream, it was my actual lips.
I decided that I didn’t want to wake up yet so I thought “Yeah, that’s how numbers work.” really hard and continued with my dream.
Then I ran. I ran out a door and now I was in a forest with two police officers in a car chasing me and trying to shoot me. They had the aim abilities of stormtroopers though and none of the bullets hit me.
Now things started to get a little bit weird since I was both doing the actions in my dream and also hearing it as if I was reading a book.
The police was still chasing me/her so I/she pretended to slow down and let them think I/she was out of breath, then when they’d gotten close enough I/she ran through some trees onto a different road and the chase continued.
There were about four different dirt roads going parallel to each other through the woods so this happened a few times.
One time she was hiding from the police and I was just standing there like an invisible ghost. I could hear a voice say something like “Silly, don’t they know that when she’s hiding she’s invisible.”
Then she and I were in the same body again and I/she started to try to sneak away from the police.
Unfortunately there were branches and twigs because this was a forest and I/she stepped on one of them alerting the police to my/her location.
I/she continued to run through the forest until we reached a lake. She thought that she needed to find a big enough piece of land to alert him. (Who he was I had no clue about.) Then I/she found a big flat rock just laying in the water barely connected to land.
It was near some tentacles like those you’d find on a gigantic giant octopus (Or Cthulhu). She thought that this rock was perfect because it was so near him. Because apparently he was a giant octopus.
I/she jumped onto the rock and it floated around on the lake. Until it reached a waterfall which, thankfully, the giant octopus wouldn’t let me/her fall down and die.
It turned out that the octopus was controlled by two boys and they had a pretty cool storytelling thing when they told the story about how they’d ended up this way.
There was a dollhouse for some reason sitting near the lake and every time one of the brothers (I’m pretty sure they were brothers) spoke a room would light up.
“When I was sixteen,” the older brother said, and a room with a doll of him lit up. “When I was eight,” the younger brother said, and a room with a doll of him lit up.
Basically some people had invaded their home, decided to live there, and kept the brothers around to torment them. They’d cut off the older brother’s legs, and I don’t think they did anything like that to the little brother.
The little brother talked about how horrible the people were ending with “Be grateful that you weren’t there.” The older brother talked about the leader of the invaders who’d made himself his own little room in the house ending with “Be grateful that it (the room) was there.
It was really cool.
Also apparently the older brother was my/her boyfriend? A bit strange but okay.
And now the police were here.
So she decided to use her boyfriend as a hostage to force the police to let her go. And I was now back in weird ghost form.
The plan didn’t work because the police didn’t believe that she’d hurt him so she was arrested.
I tried to run away but i slipped and fell back down to the lake where I saw the police arresting her.
And then I woke up.

A Cyclical Review of NieR: Automata
I'm simply going to start with my conclusive opinion: to put it concisely, NieR: Automata is one of the most engrossing games I've ever played. No hyperbole, it was outright a Special Interest to me as an ADHD sufferer, and I could not stop playing it from the day I decided to give into my curiosity and try it for myself. Needless to say, after pouring I cannot even count how many hours into the game and growing to not just like the characters, but connect with them on a personal level, I could not help but find myself jumping headfirst into a second playthrough almost immediately after the first. Which is all well and good.
Because that's exactly what this game wants you to do. It wants you to continue the cycle it has presented.
NieR: Automata is an Action RPG that follows the story of three androids’ struggle to end a war upon an Earth overrun by machine lifeforms. 2B is the decidedly stoic one of the three with a heart that she tries denying she has, 9S has an almost child-like sense of wonder that helps more than it hinders, and A2 is an enigmatic figure at first, but one that cannot be denied as having a personality all her own as time treks forward. Millenia ago, a race of aliens invaded in a bid to destroy humanity using an army of robots that looked almost doll-like in their appearance, forcing what was left of humanity to flee to the moon and put forth their efforts towards reclamation rather than repulsion using humanoid Androids known as YoRHa units. While this concept sounds relatively silly, the execution is almost anything but, holding a seriousness that’s just strong enough to be taken as seriously as it wants to be with a sincerity you can’t ignore. It isn’t above taking the ridiculous to heart, though, and that truly does help keep things even more believable as you trek through the many areas the game has to offer.
In its barest of forms, this game is what you could call a Hybrid Action game with semi-open level design and RPG advancement systems such as weapon upgrades and stat boosts. The biggest bulk of the gameplay you'll be facing is a sort of mixture between bullet hell shooters in which you avoid, counter and shoot down your enemies as well as a pinpoint precision hack and slash combat, built around dodging and countering as well, sometimes focusing on one over the other for minutes at a time to keep the gameplay fresh. One moment you're dodging with brilliant timing to counter with a heavy-hitting strong slash or jab depending on your equipped weapon, the other you may be actively in a literal scrolling shoot'em'up that places you headlong in the path of a slew of enemies and their multitude of bullets. The game is no master of a single trade. Instead, it manages to give an almost perfect blend of two entirely differing styles into one package that breathes the boon of variety into the gameplay. I never felt bored playing the game, I only found myself growing tired because it had somehow become six hours later.
Two of the biggest aspects of the game that kept me so engrossed was how brilliantly the sound mixed with the visuals of what the game was showing me. Not a single moment went by without something of note occurring, and with the style the camera seemed to have whilst moving along, sometimes shifting a 3D perspective into a 2D platformer simply because it can, the game had a unique feel that not many can replicate. The peaceful moments were captivatingly serene, allowing me to explore to my leisure as the music quietly thrummed in the background, a fish nibbling on a lure as I quietly cast out my little companion's line. The lighting and the brilliance of the dull, but naturalized and breathtaking set design helped me feel enveloped by its world, the immersion of such a pristinely desolate landscape of an apocalyptic Earth helping me connect to the story even more so.
This extended to the less peaceful settings in the game as well. As the story progressed, I found myself absolutely engulfed in turmoil as my android avatars in-game conversed and contemplated whilst fighting for their lives. Their voices were almost perfectly chosen for such a game, and the voice acting was superb enough to truly help me feel just as confused, elated, relieved or angry as they were. 2B’s quiet resignation of her role, 9S’ true curiosity of the world around him and A2’s deeply rooted past helps one connect to them in a way not typically seen in a normal game of this genre. You help direct these living, breathing androids made to hold their emotions at bay but finding themselves more human than even the humans commanding them, and each moment of unease, wonder or tension feels earned in its fullest degrees and quite real due to their emotive capabilities. It also helps that, again, the level design and breathtaking score can push the wind out of your lungs so effectively when paired properly.
When you step into the City Ruins for the first time, the sunlight peaks down in such a soft, divine way, the naturalized world gently easing you forward towards your next destination. The first moments of confusion and bafflement upon arriving within the Amusement Park, seeing the almost eerily peaceful, otherworldly land you’ve stumbled within, never leave even as you delve deeper or decide to return whence you came. Whether that be a to camp to rest and listen to the sounds of life around you or the almost barren, but somehow brimming with potential discovery desert to the north, it legitimately feels like the world, however dead it may be, will continue to thrive. But it can’t. Not with work to do. And that’s where the main developer of this game, Platinum Games, shines.
When the music begins to ratchet up a violent degree, more instruments and vastly more threatening visuals are thrown your way. And this always means that the superb combat is soon to follow. Simple skirmishes can yield to vast assaults, and incredible set pieces and bosses punch their way through your screen with a presence that cannot be understated. The character of each enemy is palpable to a point where each and every type has their own style and finesse, captivating you in your bid to fight them off and clear the area for safe travels. 2B and A2’s combat is precise, direct and undeniably satisfying to cut down swathes of enemy machines that charge at you with support from airborne and turret-like brethren. 9S’ indirect assistance in the form of his twin-stick shooter hacking minigame can never be called “unfun” or “unnecessary”, especially when he can even hold his own in the thick of battle. No massive fight feels unearned. No visual spectacle lacks a need to appear. It’s a cycle of feedback that helps bring the game to life in a fulfilling way.
I say this because of the game’s cyclical nature. While this review may have bounced from the ending to the beginning, from gameplay to visuals and back to the gameplay once more, the game follows a similar structure. One playthrough may yield to you everything you need to experience a full game’s worth of narrative tension and peaceful downtime, but the story this game truly wants to tell does not end with just one ending. Not in the slightest. You follow through as 2B for only the first of three entire stories. 9S’ side story soon follows, telling a secondary account of what happens to truly be a tale of camaraderie that cannot be fulfilled without the severity of what you know comes next. But where the game truly shines in its third and final playthrough that leads to the game’s true ending.
And I dare not spoil how A2’s efforts change the course of the game’s entire story. Because, to put it concisely, NieR: Automata is one of the most engrossing games I've ever played. After pouring I cannot even count how many hours into the game as a Special Interest that captivated me so entirely, growing to not just like the characters, but connect with them on a personal level, I could not help but find myself jumping over here to write my thoughts upon the game. The spectacular visuals mixing with the music and voice acting to create a story I cannot believe could be told so well. The combat that meshes together two shockingly different styles into a new, fresh take on the both of them. A story that deliberately tells itself in a way that all three characters you play as can present in their own ways. It’s almost a lesson to teach the player how to view things from multiple angles, see the truth for what it is…
… and break through the cycle to see the results just a bit differently than before with greater context.
