Poets, painters and film directors drawn to neutral Switzerland before or during the war and found in Zurich an important refuge for the new face of avant-garde.

Just across the street there was the Cabaret Voltaire which served as the headquarters of the Dadaists, founded on February 5 1916 as a mockery of the "ideals of culture and art":

"our Candide against these times, people behaved as if nothing had happened, as if all this carnage was a triumph."

The Dadaists aimed to represent the crisis hysterically, but also, in the midst of this chaos, "to pay attention, beyond the barriers of war and nationalism, to the few independent spirits who lived for other ideals". Surrounded by the expressionist posters and primitivist paintings of Janco and Richter, these provocateurs recited contradictory manifestos (both futurist and expressionist), poems in French, German and Russian (that is, in languages ​​of different warring parties) and quasi-African songs; they devised concerts with typewriters, timpani, rakes and lids. "Absolute pandemonium, the people around us shout, laugh and gesticulate. Our response is amorous sighs, bursts of sobbing, poems, bellowing and meowing like medieval bruitists. But they weren't just nihilists. They staged the hardships of exile in almost surrealistic ways, but they also formed a community of artists engaged in politics and international languages and communication.

They were destructive in spirit, but often also affirmative; regressive in attitude, but sometimes also redemptive. The term "Dada" held all these characteristics together, in Romanian Dada means yes yes, in French rocking horse, and for the Germans a specific kind of ingenuity, the nanny and the stroller.

Un Día Como hoy 11 de agosto de 1956, en Springs, New York, E.U. en un accidente al conducir ebrio Jackson Pollock pierde la vida a los 44 años de edad, a Pollock se le considera creador del "dripping" y se le reconoce como el máximo exponente del expresionismo abstracto.

Durante su infancia y su adolescencia vivió en Arizona y California, y en 1929 se trasladó a Nueva York para estudiar pintura con Benton en el Art Students League.

En su período de formación conoció la pintura de los muralistas mexicanos Rivera, Orozco y Siqueiros (con este último llegó a tomar talleres) que le impresionó profundamente.

Comenzó su carrera con obras figurativas, en las que presta ya particular atención a los valores matéricos y el cromatismo.

Hacia 1938 empezó a interesarse por la pintura abstracta e irracional, y para las obras de este período buscó inspiración en el mundo de los nativos americanos.

El año 1947 fue decisivo en su trayectoria, ya que fue cuando adoptó la peculiar técnica del "dripping": en lugar de utilizar caballete y pinceles, colocaba en el suelo el lienzo y sobre él vertía o dejaba gotear la pintura, que manipulaba después con palos u otras herramientas, e incluso a veces le daba una gran consistencia mediante la adición de arena o fragmentos de vidrio.

Gracias al apoyo de algunos críticos como Harold Rosenberg, su nombre, asociado a las obras realizadas con la técnica del "dripping", se convirtió en uno de los más significativos del expresionismo abstracto y de la 'action painting', tendencia de la que, con Willem de Kooning, es el representante más destacado.

Fue, además, uno de los primeros artistas en eliminar de sus obras el concepto de composición, y en mezclar signos caligráficos con los trazos pictóricos.

A partir de la década de 1950, Jackson Pollock simultaneó la pintura abstracta con obras figurativas o semifigurativas en blanco y negro, pero su nombre ha pasado a la posteridad, sobre todo, por los grandes lienzos abstractos de vivo colorido, donde los trazos se entrelazan hasta formar una trama densa y compacta (una especie de maraña) de gran impacto.

Unos meses antes de su muerte, la revista "Time" se refería a él, de forma despectiva, como Jack, "the Dripper” (el gotero).

A pesar de los intentos de la prensa artística por entender seriamente su trabajo, su nombre se convirtió en sinónimo de capricho artístico extremo.

La novedad de su técnica de “pouring” eclipsó casi por completo su verdadera preocupación por la expresión, a través del arte, de las esferas profundamente personales que esta técnica le permitía, ya que, para él, el arte derivaba del inconsciente.

De su biografia se puede señalar que no sacó provecho económico de su fama, nunca vendió un cuadro por más de 10.000 dólares en vida y a menudo se vio en apuros para conseguir dinero.

Su trabajo era más apreciado fuera de E.U. Se le vio en Europa, en las Bienales de Venecia de 1948, 1950 y 1956, y en una exposición individual en París, en 1952.

Su muerte fue prematura muerte, justo cuando ya era un pintor de enorme influencia entre los jóvenes.
