Maybe part of what gives me the assurance of writing fic for a thing is knowing almost everything there is to know about the thing. So even me being 👀 at shadowgast, I don't think I could write fic for it bc the critical role universe is so fucking big & I will literally die if I ever get any detail wrong

And so instead I write for a video game I've known for 5 and a half years, which I've played 3.5 times (and largely watched playthroughs for Another time!) which belongs to a game series that I've played every installment of (minus eternal punishment)(& no I didnt actually finish innocent sin Nor persona 1, but shh) so that I can have the assurance that YES I know any lore that could possibly be relevant to this thing, and EVEN THEN I will accidentally have the characters go to school on 2 days when they were not supposed to go to school & I will lie down and weep bc inconsistencies r the bane of my soul and I will now perish

Fantasy High Good Place AU

I am very happy that y'all voted for this, because it's been living in my brain rent-free for the past couple weeks.

So, right off the bat---this is partially self-indulgence, and partially a little exploration of what the Bad Kids would be like as adults if they hadn't found each other... and, well, if they were living in a more mundane world. And, of course, I had to combine and add a couple roles, just to make everyone fit.

Fig: She's in the Eleanor role as the main POV character, and as the first person who decides to learn how to be better. In life, she was a twenty-seven-year-old musician living in Phoenix, Arizona who was still trying to find her big break, and got by via drug-dealing after a string of shitty service jobs. Fig hasn't spoken to her mom in years, even after both Gilear and Gordie (aka Gorthalax) have both died, and she put up a front of selfishness and constant lies due to not trusting anyone and being afraid of being vulnerable. But when she dies and supposedly gets mistaken for a pro-bono death-row lawyer, she realizes that she's gotta ask for help...

Ayda: She's in the Chidi role---a high-strung ethics professor who devoted her life to figuring out the deep secrets of the universe, often at the cost of her own mental health. She's not as indecisive as Chidi, but she's very much of the mindset that ethical standards should always be upholded, and she initially sees nothing wrong with the points system. As Ayda becomes closer to Fig, she starts to pick up on how the system doesn't count for extenuating circumstances, and how much of an actual minefield ethics is... and she starts to reflect on her own life, where she never knew how to connect with others and stayed in her comfort zone of academia. Throughout bonding with the others, she slowly learns how to let her walls down and challenge the system.

Fabian: He's in a Tahani role, as the upper-class socialite who pretty much bought his way into "heaven" and definitely has a bunch of narcissistic tendencies. Unlike Tahani, however, he's very much aware of his own failings, and he constantly stresses about how fragile his standing and happiness is---though, he's become incredibly good at hiding it. Fabian's pretty much been living in the shadow of his late father's legacy for his whole life, and he spent most of that life trying to be just as good, if not better, than him... so, when he supposedly gets into the "Good Place," it's essentially proof that he did everything right. Of course, that still doesn't keep him from feeling like there's something amiss, especially since there's some issues with his assigned soulmate...

Riz: In life, Riz was a P.I. who mostly did petty work for rich people and got used to doing things that were vaguely shady in order to get by. By the time he died, he had a very low opinion of people in general, and had a "dog eat dog" mindset... which was immediately blown out of the water the second he realized that he'd been mistaken for a brilliant secret agent, and he was going to spend his afterlife with a self-centered rich boy as romantic soulmates. Riz being Riz, he immediately started to figure a way out of this situation, eventually finding out Fig---and one other person---and agreeing to take Ayda's ethics lessons if it meant he could earn his spot in the Good Place... though, of course, he's still subconsciously picking up on the little hints that something is off.

Kristen: She's in the "Jason" role... sorta. When she was alive, she was a former member of a conservative Christian cult who left when she was nineteen, spent the next five years trying to find another truth to pursue, and spent the last three years of her life partying her problems away and living high on nihilism. So it was quite a shock for her when, after dying, she supposedly got sent to the Good Place... and only because they thought that she's a humanitarian pastor, and straight to boot. Kristen initially doesn't want to waste time with ethics lessons, but as more and more things start to go wrong, she reluctantly agrees---and ends up reconnecting with that curious, searching part of herself that she thought she'd left behind, over and over again.

Gorgug: When he was alive, he was a physicist who made a lot of impressive discoveries---many of which had the potential to really help people---but due to the fact that he had a lot of issues with standing up for himself and believed himself to not be as smart as he actually was, he tended to let himself get taken advantage of and have other people take credit for his work. Getting into the Good Place kind of confirmed Gorgug's belief that keeping your head down and being humble would pay off eventually... until his assigned soulmate immediately told him that she was a) gay, and b) here by mistake. The two of them do become pretty good friends, and Gorgug even sits in on some of Ayda's ethics lessons, learning a bit about himself as he does.

Adaine: She's Janet---or, rather, an "Oracle," one of many informational assistants made by the Good Place (the Bad Place has Informants, while Accountants have Librarians). Every Oracle is given a name upon being activated in order to distinguish her from others, and, well, hers is Adaine. She starts off as your typical cheery, happy-to-help living Siri, but as time goes on and she gets rebooted over and over again, she starts to form genuine connections with the humans, and with connections come actual feelings... including the rise of mild anxiety. Adaine's grateful for that, though, as she sees becoming more human as an incredible experience.

Aelwyn: Honestly... there was no other character who was bitchy, multifaceted, and weirdly loving enough to be Micheal. At first, underneath her quirky and "cool older sister" angel persona, she's every bit the callous, vindictive, and cruel demon who only lives to torment human souls and prove her worth to her boss. But reboot after reboot, she fails, the humans become closer and figure her out... and she's eventually forced to cave. Aelwyn never fully loses her bitchiness and slightly amoral nature, but she does develop a heart and self-awareness as she becomes friends with the humans---and as she forms a sisterly connection with Adaine. Even a demon can learn to grow.

I have more thoughts, but I've spent a lot of time figuring out how to make this coherent, so... yeah!

I feel I have talked about this before but the most important characters of the story aka Izu and Shig, are forever linked to shitty names. Deku is a fucking slur...but Tomura Shigaraki is a horrible name.

I dont think people fully get this. (Even more as AFO made up the name) the name means to mourn...

Its the Dr who gave Shig the hands, yes. But AFO was there snickering...

Tomura Shigaraki is a horrible name and no one in the story mentions that. Not even Izu.

When Shig recover his memories, if he was to server the "conection" with afo...should have used his real name: Tenko Shimura. But 😒Hori.

Just to sum up, Tomura Shigaraki has a very mean spirit name and was ok with such name ....and being a npc of afo even when it is detrimental to him. Its another paralel with his soulmate aka Izu.

I agree. It's another way that Izuku and Shig parallel each other in that they are well known in universe and outside of it by names / monikers that are detrimental to them.

Izuku is known by "Deku" which means useless puppet.

Shimura Tenko was renamed by AFO to "Shigaraki Tomura" which means to mourn.

Under any other writer, these two encouraging each other to abandon their disparaging monikers given to them by their abusers and embracing their actual names - or a new more positive moniker could have been a powerful moment for them both but Hori wastes this opportunity.

Akutagawa as Eleanor. Obvs. That Beast flavor of protagonist vibes. Unapologetical Yokohama scumbag. Used to work for the Yakuza before he died.

Atsushi as Chidi. Used to be a literature university professor. He's perfect fit to fill Chidi's anxious shoes.

This time most of the comic relief is born from having a literal mobster, for whom homicide has always been the first solution to problems, being dropped in paradise, where everyone is already dead so he can't kill. Ft. the very very stressed Atsushi, nothing more than an academic nerd who's trying /so hard/ to stop him from breaking havoc.

“Do all soulmates come with complimentary haircuts or?”

A looooot of initial conflict and Akutagawa and Atsushi fighting, even more than cheleanor, you can guess it. Yet Atsushi does never step back from offering his help to Akutagawa.

Akutagawa who struggles to even ASK for help. Atsushi is 100% done and spends half the time saying “why am I even doing this” and yet he does keep doing this.

Atsushi teaching Akutagawa to be a better person through literature more than philosophy. Them reading books together and learning that there's beauty in the concept of all humans being inherently connected through time and space by feeling the same things (cue to “we're all in this together”).

*Minor inconvenience occurs* “I say we kill them” “No, I– what?? We– you do realize we're in the afterlife, right? You do realize you can't kill people here, right?”

Please imagine Atsushi as a classical literature professor with glasses and turtlenecks and a stack of books always in his hands it's very important to me

“You know what, for someone who barely knew how to read when we first met, you speak with a surprisingly elaborate vocabulary”

Where Eleanor's struggle is constantly being triggered by people being better than her, for Akutagawa it comes more in the form of being constantly reminded that he was never good enough

When it comes to Atsushi... It's a mess. For the most part of the story, you'd see him and think he's nothing but a professor. Yet gradually, slowly, start to appear hints that something is off with him. In reality, he's absolutely tormented, he's just used to not make it transpire. Differently from Chidi, he does, very early on, start questioning if he belongs there in the Good Place– but tries again and again to convince himself that he does belong there, that he's good. That's all he's ever tried to be, that's all he's ever done, why wouldn't he? And yet it constantly feels like he's just lying to himself, but he does want to lie, he wants to believe he's good. He's tried so hard all his life to be good– and now his struggles are paying off! They are, right? So it doesn't matter if he killed that man when he was a child. He's a good person. He's spent his whole life trying to make amends for it. He's good he's good he's good (grows increasingly insane)

Aka, Atsushi killed Shibusawa when he was little. The orphanage director covered it up and nobody came to know, but the truth haunted Atsushi his whole life, and now keeps haunting him in the afterlife too, because deep down he knows he doesn't belong. Aka Atsushi going through the horrors™ once again.

So Atsushi's helping Akutagawa isn't, at least initially, moved by altruism like Chidi's (Atsushi is a pretty selfish character...), but by his desperate need to prove he's good + a sort of auto-inflicted punishment. He's fucked up...

On the hand of Akutagawa's backstory– you know when Eleanor's background is revealed, and you're like “that doesn't justify her being a shitty person, but at least I understand now?”; for Akutagawa it would be revealing he joined the Yakuza in the first place to provide for his little sister. I can see him revealing it to Atsushi after having spent a long long time together and having eventually warmed up to each other (and having fallen in love), on a particularly vulnerable night: Akutagawa tells him that although there's nothing from his life of hell on earth he could ever miss, he worries about how his little sister is doing without him; to Atsushi's genuine astonishment, because in months of knowing each other Akutagawa had never brought up having a sister.

Akutagawa's character core is once again finding the reason to his existence– or better, finding the answer. (That's taking from Chidi's character this time)

“You know the reason yourself, don't you” would be Akutagawa's “There is no answer // but Atsushi is the answer”. This au basically writes itself

Tampa Bay Lightning: Brayden Point is another of those players that just eternally carries my fantasy teams.

Toronto Maple Leafs: I think Calle Jarnkrok is eternally underrated. And I'm right.

Vancouver Canucks: Stanley Cup Champion Teddy Blueger. He deserves it.

Vegas Golden Knights: I simply believe that if one does not at least admire Jack Eichel for his dedication to being a bitch and ruining all the narratives, one does not exist to me.

Washington Capitals: They have Dylan Strome from the fics! It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride, everything everything will be just fine, everything everything will be alright alright...

During high school, Kitty and her parents had a large fight, mostly about her bisexuality and them catching her with one of her girl best friends making out in her room. This lead Kitty to pick up two different after school jobs just to save up enough money to get a shitty studio apartment for after the fact. Now with college (that thankfully was paid for out of a trust her late grandmother left her as well as scholarships) she balances that with an almost full time job just to make ends meet. 

Though Kitty doesn't like the fact people know this is she is a closeted musical lover. Reasons why she chose New Directions over the trouble tones, plus she would hope that she could get Rachel Berry to tone it down a notch or five.

Season 1 Episode 11

 We open the episode with Fiona and Steve having a super cute moment when Debbie interrupts them. Fucking Jimmy-Steve..

Debbie wants Fiona to go to a classroom moms meeting; she had signed Monica up, but Monica is gone, so Debbie asks Fiona to go. No one is happy about it. Fiona goes down to make coffee, but Debbie stays to ask Jimmy if he’s told Fiona the truth yet. He hasn’t. Baby Debbie is unimpressed.

Lip is looking for Ian’s birth father; he’s hoping to scam him for cash. Fiona suggests they take the bus to see Grammy. Grammy Gallagher!!

Fiona heads over to Debbie’s school. The class moms are super shitty. But we learn from Jasmine, who’s from the neighbourhood, that they’re making “decorations for the kid’s St. Patty’s day party tomorrow”. This is a direct quote! Keep this in mind.

Fiona heads over to the bitchy ladies, who are talking mortgages and they make a shitty comment about Fiona not needing to worry about it because she doesn’t own a home. But Fiona’s always got a comeback.

The next scene has Debbie and Carl playing video games in the living room. Frank comes home to them and asks what they’re doing home, to which Debbie replies, “Budget cuts. We have every other Friday off.”

This implies that it’s a Friday. But the St. Patty’s day party is tomorrow, making the party on a Saturday. So the district doesn’t have money to keep the kids in school, as is the law, but has money to bring them in on a Saturday for a party? Okk..

Now there is a chance that the actress who said the party is “tomorrow” messed up and ad libbed that, because according to the Netflix closed captioning, she doesn’t say the word ‘tomorrow’. But then they could have edited the scene better. Either way, I’m not happy with this for my purposes here.

Anyway, Frank is there to pick up his mail because he’s expecting a cheque. Instead he finds a letter saying his work compensation his been terminated. He’s ummm... a little upset.

Lip goes to Karen’s to look for her. He hears loud music coming from the basement, and goes down to find her destroying her dad’s apartment. God those clowns are creepy.

Lip says he hasn’t seen Karen at school in a few days, and she’s got a new nose ring/chain thing. She’s very clearly upset that her dad called her a whore, and Lip, being a dumbass, doubles down and calls her a whore, too. Not his smartest moment.

Frank is upset and finds his sleazy personal injury attorney, who informs Frank that they have video of him not being injured. His professional advice is that next time, he aims for knees as it pays more.

Fiona is still stuck with the moms making shamrocks or something. Jasmine is trying to make friends. Ah the sweet beginnings of bi-Fiona. She starts with coffee and then suggests a drink. Sounds like a date.

Frank offers to take Carl to ‘learn the family business’ and Debbie has typed up resume for Frank. Debbie and Carl are soulmates.

Lip and Ian are having a brothers day looking for Frank’s brother. Lip is really into it; Ian is skeptical. Frank takes Debbie and Carl to the job centre to look for work. The kind of work where an accident might be happen. He’s unreasonable though because he doesn’t like the idea of sharp metal in the eye. He is given a list of jobs where the conditions are hazardous, unsafe, or both. Sweet Debbie is concerned..

Lip and Ian go see Grammy in prison. She’s in there after she caused a tiny meth explosion that killed two teens. She outraged they have her cleaning the toilets, but it’s ok. She kindly informs her grandsons that she can get pussy and blow anytime she’d like, so all good. No worries! They ask for Frank’s brothers’ names. They get Jerry, Clayton, and Wyatt. We also get this iconic line:

Fiona and Jasmine are out on their date. Jasmine is married with three kids and a stretched out cookie box. But don’t worry—she’s doing kegels while on her date with Fiona. They bond over drunk dads. And then their date is over.

Kev is super into it.

Kevin Ball: a champion and an ally. 

Frank is taking Carl and Debbie around looking for work, but all the jobs are either way too dangerous or not dangerous enough. Good Officer Tony and his partner have figured out that Steve might be stealing cars. He’s pretty excited about that. Can’t wait to tell Fiona. But Fiona’s not very happy with Tony sticking his nose in Steve’s business. She tries to call Steve to warn him, but he’s not picking up.

Karen seems to have dyed her hair black and is on Daddyz Girl, a web diary website. She also got the word ‘whore’ tattooed on her arm. Oh boy.

The Gallaghers are icing green cupcakes they made for the party the next day. Steve comes to help, and Fiona is worried, but Steve seems pretty chill about it. Tony notices that the car Steve had earlier now has different plates.

The next morning, which is a Saturday I guess, Lip has borrowed Steve’s car and he and Ian are knocking on Frank’s twin brother Jerry’s door. There’s a tiny bit of a family resemblance. I think.

And then the show goes on for 10 more seasons and they never once mention Frank’s TWIN brother. Who wants nothing to do with Frank’s family.

Jasmine comes over to the Gallagher’s unannounced with a bunch of clothes for her and Fiona to try on. Steve has apparently heard of Jasmine and seems a little jealous. He’s heading out, and Debbie makes Steve pinkie swear he’s going to tell Fiona the truth. I love baby Debs SO much!

Frank is wallowing at his job, realizing it’s gonna take a while to get hurt enough for worker’s comp. Fiona is getting more attention from Jasmine as they try on clothes. Karen is breaking Eddie’s car window. And Lip and Ian seem to have found the brother they’re looking for.

Clayton is excited to show them pictures of him and Frank as kids. Frank was pious, an alter boy and top of his catechism class. The concept of a baby Frank is so strange.

Aunt Lucy, Clayton’s wife, isn’t very comfortable with them being there, though. The two of them fight in the kitchen, loud enough for Lip and Ian to hear, and Ian wants to leave. He doesn’t want to ruin their lives. He doesn’t want to leave his siblings. Ian walks out and lets Lip know that his siblings are his family and he’s happy with who they are. He just loves his siblings so much.

This casting really was spot on, though.

Tony catches up with Steve while he’s stealing a car. Steve doesn’t help himself, and Tony is pissed. Looks like Good Officer Tony isn’t so good after all. He takes Tony to an alley and roughs him up. He tells Steve to either turn himself in, go to jail for two years, just enough time for Tony to propose to her. Or he can leave. Just pack up and leave.

Good officer Tony Isn’t so Good, huh?

Fiona is at the kid’s dance party, and runs into Jasmine and her husband Hal. Hal is also really flirty. Fiona’s worried Steve isn’t there. Jasmine suggests they go to the bathroom and indulge in some party favours she has.

The car that Tony knows Steve stole cuts him off and passes by, and Tony chases after it. Except we know that it’s Lip and Ian. He calls it in, and when he pulls up he finds Lip and Ian. This is a wrench in his ‘get Fiona to love me’ plans, huh.

Frank had hurt his hand at work when he nail-gunned himself on purpose. He won’t get worker’s comp, but he got some good drugs. He hears Karen crying in the basement and goes to check on her. She tells him to leave, but then she gets an idea. She strips down and, well. She rapes him. On camera. This show is a mess.

And Fiona gets a call that Lip and Ian are in a spot of trouble.

So this episode takes place on a Friday-Saturday around St. Patrick’s day, which is March 17th. In 2011, March 17th was a Thursday, so I guess this episode takes place March 18-19th. Sure. Whatever. Who throws school parties on Saturdays!

It's so old, but my Vampire!Eddie Boyfriend headcanons. Looking back it could do with a lot of editing, but the idea that Eddie was actually turned into a vampire because of the bat bites was brilliant (credit to whoever came up with that first).

A character who is perfect to me (wouldn't change a thing)

I got TWO, season 1-3 Hopper, because I really loved his whole punch first ask questions later. And his weight, I loved his weight. I think his weightloss in season 4 wasn't just for Stranger Things, I think he genuinely wanted to be skinnier. Which ... I mean his body his rules, but I loved him more when he was heavier tbh.

And OBVIOUSLY EDDIE. HOW DID THEY COME UP WITH THE PERFECT CHARACTER?! They could have made him a one, maybe even two sided drug dealer who couldn't graduate high school. But no, he has so much heart and SOFTNESS. I actually fell in love with him after the cafeteria scene, when he was with Chrissy. He just became this caring, open, kind guy who also had a LUNCHBOX full of fcking DRUGS.

The character I relate to the most and why

You already hate me by now because I've spoken about Eddie so much, but yeah ... Eddie. It's one of the reasons why he's so well-loved. STEVE'S PARENTS - WHERE ARE THEY? WHAT ARE THEY DOING? I mean they could be travelling for work but that's still neglect.

Billy - if he wasn't a good looking character no one would like him. In the original script he was actually supposed to called Lucas the n-word because he's racist. And in the scenes with Lucas, there are underlying motifs that show his racism. So, yeah, I hate racists.

Everything (I Think) I Know About Shitty Werewolf E-Novels

For context, my facebook ads are fucking flooded with these shitty, 5-a-dime werewolf stories with terrible grammar, plots so cliche that even manhwa writers would roll their eyes at them, and the five-chapter blurbs ending on a stupid unnecessary cliffhanger. I've seen too many of them at this point so now I'm making it everyone else's problem.

All werewolves either live in packs which act more like independent compounds in the woods, or as packless rogues who can be killed off with no remorse because outsiders stinky, I guess.

(Sidenote, they never mention how the werewolf societies function living so isolated, how they haven't been found with modern technology, whether or not they're farming or trading for food, or anything that doesn't involve mystic wolf theocracy.)

Werewolves worship a Moon Goddess. She is important and guides all their decisions, but never actually plays any important part in the story despite being their chief deity and appearing in literally every blurb I've been shown.

Despite having one female god as their only religion, packs are extremely patriarchal, with an Alpha (always male) ruling the pack while his Luna (always female, always the Alpha's mate) does some administrative work or something.

Betas are Second-in-Command and not the Luna, because leadership is a boys-only club, I guess. After them are Deltas and Gammas (Gamma optional).

Werewolves have a "true mate", aka a Soulmate. This is always a source of conflict, and despite being the most existentially terrifying concept imaginable, is treated as good and normal by werewolf society.

Instead of being people who turn into wolves, werewolves are instead more like dualminds, with a Human side and a Wolf side each considered their own separate entity in the same changing body.

Abusing your girlfriend/fiancée/wife is seen as normal, morally acceptable behavior. Whether the author also buys into this belief system varies.

Women are basically property that can fight back. They go with their men and only sometimes get to make decisions.

If you think Tradfems are bad, wait until you see the sexual slavery that goes on in these books! I get that they're written for lonely teenagers who want to get off but don't want actual porn, but seriously, it's disgusting how women are treated in these books.

Everyone is heterosexual because *noises* wolves?

Every single man in these books can and will cheat on his significant other, usually in the cruelest way possible, probably to fuel the revenge fantasy.

Adoption is nonexistent. The only thing people care about is your bloodline. (Actually accurate to real-life wolves, they're not friendly with non-kin)

Every single woman is a jealous bitch (ha) who will stop at nothing to tear every other woman down around her, because female friends feels threatening to your average insecure reader who is terrified that other women will try to steal male attention.

If you've actually read any of these kinds of stories to the end, please tell me what I got wrong and what I tragically got right, I apparently like to suffer.
