Went back to read a shared doc me and my friend put random things on in high school. I found this short little crossover crack fic and I feel like, having read this again, I must force others to experience this as well.

Hello @llamagoddessofficial :> Wrote another fanfic fanfic for you! I really love the good zoo siren au as someone who does some marine biologies, and I had a burst of inspiration so I wrote the first day working at the aquarium :D I loved writing the parallels hehee
—————
You were a janitor in the Ebott aquarium!!
Which, when you say out loud, does sound underwhelming. But you didn’t mind it. You had come to them in the hopes of becoming an intern, a volunteer, or a staff if things went your way. The lady at the information desk (who was very helpful), had looked quite apologetic when you asked her.
“I’m sorry… but we’re not looking for anymore creature carers at the moment.”
It was quite disappointing, but you weren’t expecting to get accepted straight away, anyway. And you’d already bought a ticket anyway, so you still had an aquarium day all to yourself, not like you were wasting your day. And you had a great day! If you weren’t caring for the animals directly, you were reassured by the fact that your payment is going to contribute to their care.
The day became even better when the lady recognized you on the way out and stopped you.
“We don’t have positions for carers right now, but… how would you like to be a cleaner? I’ll keep you up to date if there are any spots open.”
Naturally, you took it. It wasn’t like you had anything pressing for your schedule right now. As soon as a position opens- whatever it is- you were going to take it by the throat.
It was your first day. You were blasted with warmth as soon as you went in, having to quickly shed your winter clothes for the janitor uniform. It had little fish on the sleeves, which was a cute touch. It wasn’t the most glamorous job, of course. You spent more of your hours in the toilet than you did in the exhibit rooms. But any agitation you got from coming into a stall, only to see tissues strewn about on the floor like someone just blew up a roll after you had just cleaned; was quickly washed away when you went out, to the cool blues, the dancing lights cast in the darkened rooms. Even when you had to excuse yourself in front of the guests to wipe a drink spill in front of the giant ‘Pacific Bay’ aquarium, the music calmed your soul.
It wasn’t very quiet in the afternoon, what with the families and their 300 toddlers running about and crying babies. But when the day waned and the water glimmers dimmed, the one’s left were adults, couples. Then of course, the aquarium closed.
You worked up a sweat that clung to your uniform uncomfortably, after you scrubbed a mysterious stain on the floor leading to the gift shop that seemed to seep into the shiny tile, somehow.
“Hey, Julia?” You called; the lovely information lady that allowed you to have this opportunity in the first place; wandering about the empty entrance to check out. It felt like a bit of a ghost town all of a sudden, as you roamed the aquariums for any management-type people you could ask for help.
“I’m done, right? What should I…”
You stop when you walk by a doorway, into a room that was always darker than the rest, even when the sun was still up in the sky.
… You could walk back into the dinky staff room in the back of the building where they just gave up on aesthetics, a ‘modern’ and unsightly concrete structure. But… you could also just… say that you didn’t find anyone… right? And just… ‘got lost’... in the Deep Seas room…
Looking around, holding a cloth to your heart as if someone was going to chastise you if you hadn’t, you snuck into the room. It was hard to pass up on an opportunity like this.
Ebott aquarium was special, after all. They were one of the few aquariums in the world that had sirens. Three, to be in fact. One orca siren, one shark siren, and a deep sea cecaelia. A spectacular cast, to be sure- it wasn’t a surprise how they won so many awards over the years.
This room in particular was the cecaelia’s, the most reclusive of all the sirens.
You walked past the languid isopods, the floating nautilus, the sparkling comb jellies, to a giant opening in the room where the ceiling extended so you could see the entire tank in all its glory.
It usually looked empty, of course, but the few chances you get to see the cecaelia, it would be a shame to be unable to see him.
Though, as it was now, the tank looked uninhabited, as it usually was. This siren in particular was ‘shy’, though shy wasn’t the right word. It was more that he didn’t like being looked at, as to be expected with deep sea specieses.
Which is why this was the perfect opportunity for you. Julia told you about him- that he was more likely to emerge during after hours. They had cameras in the viewing room, for the purpose of recording his activity whenever he does something interesting to show visitors that he is in fact real, and they aren’t just displaying an empty tank for fun.
The TV display is off now, but you remember the video they posted online, where the most exciting thing that happened was him shooting out of the cave to grab the food they lowered into his tank, before quickly retreating back into the cave. There were screams of children and adults alike going wild.
You read the information board next to the TV.
Skull, Deep Sea Cecaelia
Sirenus cecaelia aequor
Ebott’s most recently acquired siren, Skull was found floating near the surface, a sign of disease or weakness in deep sea sirens. It is our belief that Skull recently acquired the crack in his skull. This may have caused him to grow uncontrollably, though our researchers argue that it might as well be due to deep sea gigantism.
Not much is known of deep sea cecaelias as of now, as they are the rarest encountered sirens in human history, and extensive observation we do have is in captivity, like Skull.
They are as enigmatic as they are beautiful, deep sea cecaelias are believed to live a mostly solitary life……
Your eyes scan through the text- having read most of it from the other day visit. Your sight is caught on the plaque  next to the board, under the TV. You hadn’t noticed it before, with how full the room was. Boarded with wood and written on a golden plate, it reads:
In memory of Henry Freeman.
1975-20XX
Your squint when the gold plating starts shimmering a pinkish hue. And, did it get darker?
You follow the direction of the light to see…
“Whoa-lly shit!” You staggered.
Right there, against the glass, was Skull. He was big, you knew that, his size was listed right there on the board with a human outline next to his to show scale, and you’ve seen the videos of course- but that didn’t prepare you to see him in person.
Just his skeletal upper body dwarfed yours, bones thick and marred with scars of unknown battles deep below, where sunlight couldn’t reach. His pitch black tentacles waved around him like deep shadows in the darkness of the tank, suckers sticking and popping off the glass in tandem. At its base, a single tentacle was thicker than you were.
You held a hand up to your chest. Your heart had jumped at the giant shadow, that glowing red eye of his, the size of your fist, zeroing on you, and a great big smile full of characteristically sharp deep-sea teeth. It must’ve been instinctual fear, having a great predator looking at you, so close, only separated by a couple inches of glass.
The tips of his front tentacles were poking and tapping on the glass.
The initial adrenaline of fear quickly turned to curiosity and awe. You’ve never seen him with your own two eyes before, let alone so close- why was he out? Did he notice the empty room, and the lone ‘prey’ turned away from him and just lunged..?
“Hahahah, am I lucky to be on this side of the glass,” you joked, approaching the glass.
His eye stayed trained on you as you approached, his smile widening. He even lowered his head a little, like he was trying to get on eye level with you.
“Can’t tell if you’re curious about me or if you just really really want to eat me,” you giggle, at the way he was focused on you.
You pressed your hand to the glass, and practically squished your nose to it as you took him in. You could imagine the sounds those great big tentacles were as they moved like midnight waves.
You pull your head back in time to see his eye on your open palm against the glass. A great finger pointed to it, scratching the glass. Then… he presses his hand to the glass, right in front of yours.
Your mouth opens. Your hand just barely fits into his palm. You looked back to the cecaelia. This close, you could see all the little shift in his eyelight, flitting here and there, like he was paying close attention to the details in your face.
His eyelight cast a soft red on your face, your cheeks. A small glimmer in your eyes.
“This is…”
“Eeeeeee!”
You startle at the squeal, sounding like if a squeaky toy could get excited. When you turned around, you see a woman standing at the end of a hallway, in a white coat and white turtleneck,  looking very ready to walk in the cold.
“U-uh,”
“How did you,” she strode over to you, long blond hair bouncing as she did, “how did you get him to do that?”
“I’m- sorry?” you sputter. Looking behind you, Skull had retreated a few paces to the back of the glass. “I was just… just…” you shrug, making a face when you remember you’re still holding the cleaning cloth, hiding it behind your back.
“Magnificent!” she stood next to you, one hand on the glass. “We’ve never seen him so interested in a human before. You had him against the glass!”
Skull was swimming around, darting from one corner to the other, keeping his eye on the both of you.
“He’s never done that?”
“Never!” she turns to you, conviction in her voice. “Skull doesn’t like being looked at, he usually hides in his cave when someone walks into the room, not… approach and give them a greeting. The only reason he isn’t rushing back is because he recognizes my face as ‘someone who gives the food’. And like you see now, he doesn’t give me any special greetings. Just having him out and about while someone is in view is stunning, let alone…”
“Oh, so do you feed him?” you ask. Hopefully you weren’t going to get chewed out for dawdling in the aquarium when you’re supposed to be clocked out 30 minutes ago.
“I do help with the feedings.” She says, then extends a hand to you. “Call me Mildred. I’m the head of the aquarium.”
“The… the head?!” Your eyes widen as you shook her hand. “I’m… I’m (Y/n), it’s an honor! To meet you!”
“Oh, please, I’m much more interested in you!” She smiles, the lines around her lips wrinkled with age, evidence of a lively woman. “Say… are you the new cleaning service Julia picked up?”
“Y-yeah! I mean. Yes,” You corrected yourself. You were talking to the big boss here, and you were a little bashful to find that she knows about you.
“You said you wanted experience in animal and magical creature care, right?”
“Absolutely,”
She presses a finger to her lips, as if thinking for a moment. She casts her eyes to the exhibit, where Skull was still circling above. Then she looks at you with a playful smile.
“... How would you like to come into the siren care team?”
Your heart rate spikes, and you sputter.
“I… wh… hhhhhreally?!”

Name: Melon Bug (again)
Debut: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
(I wanted to write some more about Melon Bug, and I liked the original post just fine, so this post will be a continuation since that one was so short!)
An isopod! Oh, joyous day! It may not look like one at all with that big ol’ nose, but when it’s rolled up, there is no mistaking it! Here’s a very fun fact: when an isopod curls into a ball, it’s called conglobation! Use that in your everyday lives.
Tumblr media
Melon Bug technically isn’t an enemy, you know the drill, weird Mario friends, that usual thing. When curled up, Yoshi can lick them up and spit them out, defeating enemies they hit! Could this be the first instance of weaponized isopods?
The Player's Guide says "These feisty hoppers transform from bug to melon and back again." Feisty? They're only slightly more feisty than a real pill bug! And a real pill bug has a negative Feistiness Level. I don't think whoever wrote this has played the game, since Melon Bug is harmless! I also don't think they know about real pill bugs, because they clearly can't cogitate conglobation. A bug transforming into a melon? How unrealistic! What do they think this is, Trip World?
Tumblr media
I think "Melon Bug" is a very good name. An incredible name, even! When Melon Bug curls up, it, obviously, resembles a melon, what with both being round with stripes. While real pill bugs don't really have "stripes", their tergites (armor plates) do give a "lined" appearance. If you ask me, Melon Bug could be a good name even for real terrestrial isopods!
What do YOU call pill bugs? I've always called them roly-polies, but they have so many wacky names. Woodlouse? Yeah sure, a bug that lives under wood, why not! Butchy-boy? I don't get it, but it's funny. Then there are all the names comparing them to pigs which I just do not get, but groundhogs also get compared to pigs in common names a lot, so maybe people just don't know pigs as well as they like to think. And THEN! England gave them a bunch of CHEESE-related names. What is happening over there? Are British people somehow making cheese from isopod secretions? Why would you call this creature a CHEESELOG? That's a straight up food! I kind of love this name for them for being so ridiculous! Anyway, my point with all this is that Melon Bug would be more actually fitting than the majority of the common names these have been given, but sometimes it is more fun to be unfitting!
Isn't it weird how Melon Bug's art doesn't quite look like the sprite? Such bulging eyes in the art, but little dots in-game... well, we now know the reason!
Tumblr media
Remember Super Donkey, from the 2020 gigaleak? I feel like it's been far too forgotten for how interesting it is! Anyway, as I mentioned when talking about that game, Melon Bug was originally designed for it! It seems like the Yoshi's Island art was drawn before they decided to shrink its sclerae, and lighten its colors, but after they decided to give it little red shoes.
If you grew up calling roly-polies something else, or if you know fun names from other languages, I would love to hear them! And I hope you love and appreciate these creatures! They are so common and easy to observe, so rather than get jaded to their presence, celebrate them, and you will be able to find delight whenever you turn over a log!

Sisyphish (Lion's Mane Jellyfish) and Minnows (White Ribbon Eel) Prime
Tumblr media
Glubriel (Caribbean Reef Squid)
Tumblr media
SubmarV1ne (Longfin Mako Shark (+ Sailfish)) and SubmarV2ne (Great White Shark (+ Sailfish)) (also inspired by the little articulated snake toys)
Rambling about why I chose the beasts that I did under the cut.
Originally I was gonna use yellow tangs for Sisyphus but then I was looking at his design and was not sure how I would deal with his face while going with a fish for the tail. And then I remembered that jellies' tentacles kinda look like the way his hair does in the concept art, and while I was looking for yellow jellies I saw a lion's mane and went. Yes, that one. Very happy with the way it looks it was a lot of fun to draw.
Minos was originally gonna be a deep sea giant isopod, but after I remembered that jellyfish existed I considered going with a sea snake, couldn't find ANY naturally white snakes, thought about an albino moray, then found out about white ribbon eels (which are related to morays, very cool). He's technically the only fish unless you count the V models jkgjkhgf
Gabriel was originally gonna be a paradise/mustard gas betta but I ended up deciding that if I ever drew/wrote about them all I would be so annoyed about there being just. One freshwater fish in the ocean with saltwater creatures just,, bothered me so much that man would be In Pain. So I decided to look for color changing sea creatures, most cephalopods obviously, and one of the first ones that came up was the Caribbean reef squid. I checked to see if they could be red and they sure could so I decided that worked.
Also, his crown(?) is meant to look like gorgonian coral.
V1 was originally going to be a shortfin mako because they're slightly faster, but the silhouette was so similar that I was STRUGGLING to find differences. Longfin wasn't much better though. Regardless, mako shark because they're known for being the fastest shark and among the fastest fish.
V2 is a great white because strong scary y'know y'know. I considered dunkleosteus for the same reasons, but switched to a shark because V1 was also gonna be one and I wanted them to mostly match.
V1 and V2 both have two sailfin sails because 1. big fin to mimic their wings, 2. fast fish. Very cool.
Also the doodles on them are meant to show that the sails can fold back for speed and open to stop quick. The other one is to show that they can swap the tails out for legs if they wanted to.

hello! i haven’t sent an ask in a while because schoolwork has been piling up infinitely :[ , but your recent posts have been really interesting to me! i really liked the room sketch one, I can’t exactly explain why but there’s something so indescribably human about it. i love spaces that looked lived in, that have personality, and I think that your room (current one? made up? old one?) has done a great job of showing that. and I’m not very good at giving advice— I can hardly follow it myself, but if you don’t know something, don’t know what you want to do, try things. it’s okay if you don’t like them. i recently found out I’m more competent in languages than I thought! i can already read and understand simple sentences in german.
there’s always more to yourself than you’ll know, I think, but the world is kinder than people think. If anything, everyone is still very new at this. we’ve never lived before. do the things you like, branch out, don’t become less of yourself for other people. everything has a place, and my best advice is to treat life as you would a vacation. do all the things you can while you’re here. build a life that makes it worth it. (sorry for the long ask and my rambling, or if this is overstepping in any way. i just read what you wrote and kind of related to it in a way. thank you for continuing to create art, it brings me a lot of joy! :] )
hey isopod!!! thanks for the ask & I wish u good luck with ur school work!
Thank u so much for the compliments, im really glad the vibe of my room was conveyed in those doodles. i absolutely looove drawing my room! It’s extremely small (a renovated utility closet) and just barely fits a bed + my desk but its packed full of the things i love. It’s very lived in and I feel like it reflects my character well.
when i drew that page I was in my senior year of high school and pressures to decide my future were overwhelming. I never thought much about it until then and I didn’t have any idea of what I was going to do. The only thing I felt I had going for me was art but I didn’t want to turn my only hobby into a job I hated. I remember going through a master list of majors on random college websites and one-by-one asking myself if I’d be okay doing it. In the end I had nothing. I was really crushed about it and felt stuck. This was right after the covid quarantine too so focusing in school was difficult & I couldn’t bring myself to apply for scholarships. I started skipping classes, smoking weed, and pushing off my assignments. All of this only made me feel more miserable, of course, so everything seemed pretty bleak at the time.
But luckily I had the support of my family and especially my mother. She would always remind me that “we have option”, “we always have options”. Because I did! This was a fresh start to try my hand at a totally different experience than what I’ve done so far. I ended up choosing my major on a complete whim after hearing my aunt had a job in an adjacent field. I was pretty sure I’d drop out after a semester, yet here I am about to graduate soon & I’m having a ton of fun!! (Hell, I’m 10 hours out in the middle of nowhere right now for my Field Methods class!) It’s not that I had a knack for Geology that I just never tapped into, or that i secretly had a passion for rocks this entire time; I just found something that seemed like an okay fit and grew interest from there. I think that a small level of commitment like that is more than enough to get you going. I had a ton of ideas in my head about how I needed to have a perfect fit major that would connect every dot I’ve laid out in my life thus far, but that’s not true at all. Life is much more messy and unpredictable than that.
But enough of my rambling!! That time of my life may have been stressful but I’m very grateful that I went through it! It changed how I viewed problems and it taught me to always look for other options when everything seems helpless.
Thank u so much for ur encouragement, I really appreciate it <33 I completely agree with everything u said!! Life is an ever changing experience & often leads u in unpredictable directions!

Chapter 2 of a Dedf1sh fanfic I wrote
So I sort of disappeared for a little bit. I thought I would come back by posting the second chapter of that Dedf1sh fic I posted a while ago (which I still don't have a name for, so if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!) Also I tried my best to write Iso Padre in this chapter, but I'm not sure if I captured his manner of speaking properly, so if something seems incorrect I am entirely open to constructive criticism.

Chapter 2 below!
(TW: Mention of blood)
(Side note: If there's ever a TW or CW that I miss, please let me know! I will not hesitate to add anything that needs to be added!)
Ahato woke up with a pain along their entire right side. They’d fallen off the seat and landed on the train floor. They picked themselves up and slung the large duffel bag over their shoulder. They’d probably gotten enough sleep. Looking around the train car, they noticed someone new was sitting in the room with them. A large grey scaly iso pod sat at near the door next to a suitcase full of… plushies? He seemed to be preoccupied by his thoughts.
“Excuse me?” Ahato asked, hoping to get his attention.
“Oh, hello young squire. I had noticed you were asleep on the floor and thought I would keep you company. Might I ask if you’re alright? I heard you fall but you didn’t wake up.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just really tired I guess. Thanks for asking. Who are you?”
“I have no memory of my name. I have spent so long here that I have forgotten.”
“Oh…” Ahato felt a sudden sting in their chest. What would they have to go through to forget their own name? A name is so special and important. “I’m so sorry.”
“It is quite alright. I may have forgotten much of my life, but I can still enjoy the little memory I have left.” Ahato stood there in silence for a moment. This man seemed to kind. They couldn’t tell exactly why, but they knew instantly that they could trust him. He’d been through so much. They were similar in that way. Two souls searching for what they lost so long ago.
“My name is Ahato,” they said, “I want to help you. What can I do?”
“Well, it’s not much, but I greatly enjoy when the test subjects here share their mem cakes with me. They’re the slices of memory that you earn from completing tests. They are my only link left to what it feels like to have my own memories.”
“I haven’t completed any tests yet… but I will share all my mem cakes with you once I do!”
“Thank you, Ahato. Good luck. And please, don’t push yourself too hard for me.”
***
Ahato stood at the entrance of the station. Everything was eerily quiet. C.Q. Cumber walked them through how to select their weapon and how CQ points worked before they entered the test.
At first it looked like a forest, but none of the trees seemed quite real. It was so quiet. The silence was so distracting, Ahato felt like every slight sound was amplified. If only there were some music or something to fill in the space. An octoling spawned on top of a large pillar and started to attack Ahato. Why were they attacking? And was their skin… green? Something was definitely off. Not to mention how much stronger this octoling seemed compared to most octoling soldiers they’d- Splat! Ahato respawned at the start of the forest. They were never a part of the fighting division in the octarian army, their specialty was in the medical unit. How were they supposed to fight when normally they did the exact opposite!? Ahato wanted to give up right there. They knew something was wrong with this place and these weird green octolings were definitely a part of it. How were they supposed to fight them? Then they remembered the kind isopod back on the train. They wanted to help him, and the only way to do that was to pass this test. They took a deep breath and trudged into the forest.
***
Ahato boarded the train, mem cake in hand, bleeding. After a while they gave up trying to fight and just tried to disarm the octolings. Turns out they were good fighters even without their weapons. But Ahato managed to do it.
“Oh Ahato! You’re hurt!” The isopod stood up, worried for the octoling’s wellbeing.
“I’m okay, really. I’ve had way worse,” Ahato sighed from exhaustion as they brandished the thin spongey mem cake they had earned. They didn’t look at it. Why, out of all of their memories, did it have to be that one? The isopod took the mem cake, seeing how obvious it was Ahato did not want to hold it anymore. The moment he took it he understood.
For my f1ngers, your blood a sheet.
1 stress to keep your heart a-beat.
But soon 1 must adm1t defeat.
“Ahato… are you alright?” The isopod asked.
“Yeah, I already told you. I’m totally fine, I just need to bandage up these cuts,” Ahato had already pulled a roll of gauze out of their bag and was wrapping it around their wounds.
“I don’t mean physically.”
They paused. That mem cake had revealed more than they wanted it to. “Don’t worry, really I’m okay.”
“If you need to talk, I'd love to listen.”
Ahato thought for a moment. When was the last time they talked to someone about anything past their work for that day? “That was when I learned that just because being a medic didn’t require me to be on the battlefield, doesn’t mean I would see any less death.”
“Was this your first time losing a patient?”
“Yes. They’d been shot by a charger from close range. Typically that would just splat you and then you’d respawn, but this one had been rigged so that it shot out projectiles rather than ink. It was designed after some ancient invention used for hunting I guess? It tore directly through one of their hearts, causing them to lose immense amounts of blood. I’d never dealt with damage from a weapon like that before, so I didn’t know what I could do. I watched them die. I still have nightmares about it.”
“I am so sorry that you had to go through that, Ahato. Saving people is never an easy job. I can tell you cared about it deeply.”
“I was never good enough to fight-” they paused to take an ibuprofen pill- “I couldn’t build machines or train new soldiers. Heck, I couldn’t even manage the weapons supply. Everyone in the army thought I was useless. I thought I would end up being a grave digger. But then the medical unit announced that they were understaffed and I got stuck there. I ended up loving it. I could help people.”
“You are a good person, Ahato.” The two went silent. It wasn’t the awkward silence that Ahato was expecting when they opened up about their past. It was more like a silence of understanding. Like there was nothing more that needed to be said because they both knew what the other was going to say already. It was nice. Ahato started to cry. The isopod hugged her. They sat like that for a long time.
***
“Do you mind if I come up with a name for you?” Ahato asked the isopod. “I know it won’t be like your real one, but I want to have something that I can call you.”
“I would be very grateful if you did. What would you like to call me?”
“Iso Padre. Because you kinda remind me of my dad.”
“Thank you.”

fun reminder that Erik Satie was said to take his pet lobster out for walks
Tumblr media
and of course he wrote a lobster-themed piece. Embryons desséchés is a short suite from 1913, and is probably my favorite example of musical humor.
Cucumbers. Three years earlier, Debussy had written his first book of Preludes. The Sunken Cathedral tries to depict the mythic underwater city of Ys. Satie though this was too Romantic, and said he wanted to write something "he had seen with his own eyes". We also get a lot of salon patterns, and a melody of a famous song he probably had to play a thousand nights at Montmartre. This opening piece ends with a Romantic coda where I repeats longer than it needs to.
Edriophthalma (now called "Arthropods", like a giant underwater isopod). A little funeral march, parody of Chopin. In the score, he writes "Citation de la célèbre mazurka de SCHUBERT". I do like his simplified version of the original Nocturne-style middle section, and it's silly ending.
Decapoda (like smaller crabs and lobsters with 10 legs). This movement has a nod to classical hunting-horn fanfares. 'Hunting' sea creatures? Probably got that idea from Jules Vierne. The piece is only about a minute and a half long, but the last thirty seconds is an "obligatory cadenza" that's probably a nod to Beethoven's use of the same joke.

Soda was known for his high strung energy. But this time it wasn't because of him being hyper or chaotic, it was because he was nervous. He was tapping his fingers on the table. He took in a deep breath, it felt like he hadn't breathed for 5 minutes. His lip was raw and bleeding from biting it. He'd only been sitting down for five minutes and he was already worried hed been stood up.
Th e door's bell chimed and his eyes went wide as he stared at who had entered. Steve. He was in a plain black shirt and olive green cargo pants. Soda had only seen him wear those pants when he celebrated thanksgiving with the Mathews.
He shuffled his way over, looking down at his untied shoe laces. Once he reached the booth and sat down next to Soda he finally made eye contact and blushed.
"H-hi."
Sodapop grinned, trying not to let the new circumstances change him too much, "No need to be shy. I don't bite. Not in public at least."
Steve's eyes bugged out, his ears turning red as Soda laughed.
They both were interrupted as a waitress approached their booth. "Hello! Is there anything I can get started for you two? Appetizers or drinks?"
Steve's mouth clamped shut. Not unusual, Sodapop was used to Steve getting nervous around strangers. "Yes, we'll have a milkshake with some chips." He paused, "Oh! And two straws for the milkshake please."
Once the waitress finished jotting down their order she was off to attend to the next table.
Steve's voice was a shrunken version of his usual cadence, "So, uhm, I've never really been on a date with like a boy before."
Soda just laughed heartily, "Me neither but I'm sure we'll figure it out together."
Steve nodded before pulling out a peice of paper from his pocket. "I couldn't really afford a gift right now so here's just some poetry I wrote for you."
Soda's smile brightened, his cheeks dusted in pink. He knew Steve wrote but he never shared it before. He took the crumpled peice of paper into his hand and flattened it out before reading.
There was a deafening pause in the conversation while Steve stared expectantly, his stomach fluttering seeing Soda's eyebrows furrowed and his lips pressed together in concentration. He thought there couldn't be a moment in his life where Soda wasn't beautifully imperfect. His crooked nose, lopsided smiles, ears that stuck out, and his messy blonde hair.
Soda's head shot back up with a smile wider than the pacific, "Golly, Steve, you're real good."
His compliments were interrupted by the waiter cutting the empty air between them in half with a milkshake and a plate of chips.
Steve smiled coyly, intent to change the focus of their chat, "Y'know, I never tried dipping my chips into a milkshake before." He reached out towards the plate and plucked a single chip.
Soda replied, "I can't beleive you, it's better than peanut butter and chocolate."
Steve reached the chip dipped in milkshake over to Soda's mouth, "Then why don't you take the first bite?"

In its announcement, The Ramen Boy proclaimed that it had finally obtained the "dream ingredient" — giant isopod. The ramen restaurant said to prepare the crustacean, it removed the stomach viscera, kept its glands for consumption, and steamed the remaining meat in the shell.
According to the eatery, the white meat of the creature tastes like "lobster and crab." It claims the isopod's yellow glands taste like "crab paste," which is "unexpectedly sweet."
The owner of the restaurant wrote that the giant isopod is "very cute" and when visiting Japan he would often admire the creature in aquariums. However, the asking price is not cheap, with one bowl costing NT$1,480 (US$48) and as supplies are limited, the dish is only available to regular customers.

aw man, i didnt realise asobam didnt take off, im so sorry to hear that D: i hadnt gotten around to reading the second chapter yet, do you think you'll edit it and/or repost it at some point? (its totally ok if not, considering you're both on vacay and taking a break so dont worry abt it, its completely understandable)
Aw it's alright. I was hitting the point of like reading and rereading and i couldn't tell if i actually liked it anymore. I knew posting it would be a gamble: if people liked it, I would find my confidence again. If they didn't, I'd likely just abandon it. I wrote all the parts I enjoyed writing; continuing wouldn't have been fun without some interaction.
People didn't like it, so I won't stress myself out perfecting it. It's nbd; I enjoyed the process up until I didn't, if that makes sense. So yeah, it's being slowly eaten by my writing isopods and I'll reuse the ecosystem later.

please god tell me more about jack arson your space youtuber oc
Okay SO
Jack Arson was my sweet little lizard boy in a starfinder campaign. I actually wrote him a prologue (and epilogue) that can be found here, but essentially he was just a lil guy who was Not going to survive the harsh reality of his home planet and managed to join up as a cabin boy on a ship and work to earn his passage to Absalom (the big main space station city). From there his small size & quick wit helped him get various mechanical/engineering jobs, most of which were under the table and/or straight up Doing Crimes. He had a friend/roommate/lover at this point, also heavily involved in Shady Business, who disappeared one day without explanation (left as a plot hook for my gm that we sadly never had time to pick up :( ).
Jack used the crime money to go to college for mechanical engineering, taking a semester abroad at Clown Planet to attend Honkstein's Clown College of Engineering (for the technically inclined pranksters) where he met one of the other pcs (a clown. with a railgun. we love him) and continued doing Shady Business. On one of these Shady Business excursions he "found" a partially damaged security drone and ended up taking it home and repairing it. He started using it (now a her called Betsey, who looked somewhat like what you would get if you made a roomba out of a deep sea isopod) to film himself doing stupid stuff, which started getting popular on the internet, to the point where he could afford to stop doing Crimes and just, like, microwave weird things.
Then the campaign starts! We're on a ship called the Inevitable, looking to chart unknown planets, and we crash land on, well, an unknown planet. It ends up having a ton of cool ruins and stuff and we get to chase down this ancient cult that's planning to raise a dragon who can and will devour the entire universe. Along the way we found some cool artifacts, participated in the Space Adventurer Olympics, he got a sponsorship deal from a weapons manufacturer, played some minecraft, did some urbex, found a cool old library with a book that taught him a little bit of magic, and many other kickass adventures.
Sadly, in the final battle against the bbeg, Jack was killed by a magic ray of disintegration 😥. However, he was survived by his beautiful drone Betsey, and he had plenty of content backlogged so the channel stayed active for another few months <3 (He also pre-recorded the announcement of his own death, which is what the epilogue I linked above is. It made the gm & other players cry. Lmao)
Sadly this campaign was before I got in the habit of taking thorough notes on each session, so much of Jack's journey is lost to history, but here are some snippets:

Actually also here's the token I made for when Betsey (and the rest of the party too i guess) got to go to a fancy steampunk party

Title:
Silverman & Crandell (2011),
“Vocabulary Practices in
Prekindergarten and
Kindergarten Classrooms”
Williams, et. al. (2009),
“Word Study Instruction in
the K-2 Classroom”
(Used reading rockets version because it wouldn’t open for me for some reason)
Takeaway of Author:
Silverman & Crandell: The key takeaway of the authors is that there is a lot of research being done  on pre-kindergarten and kindergarten age vocabulary. But even though there is a lot of research and a lot of good effective strategies and teaching curricula, that there still needs to be more research done. The authors say that it is on the teachers to decide what is best for their students.
Williams: The key takeaway of the author is that based on the research, educators need to focus on the 9 tips when utilizing word study in their classrooms. This author also believes that educators should use word study other than traditional teaching of spelling  and sight words, instead we should teach the rules for transfer.
Nugget:
Research on vocabulary has shown that young children learn words from interactions with adults, just talking to them, hearing them talk and explain what words mean, and through being read to. Children also learn words through direct instruction, meaning as a teacher you’re explicitly explaining what words mean and how we use them. They also learn through combining vocab instruction practices, not one size fits all but having multiple opportunities.
The 9 tips that came out of the study are, assessing students word knowledge using multiple assessments, using homogenous small group instruction and differentiated these, making sure to make time to prepare these lessons especially when differentiating them for different levels of students, teaching word knowledge not just words so that they can transfer, demonstrate how word study can be used in reading and writing, teach strategies that are helpful, make word wall work and accessible, and word work should work and be Hands-on.
Activity:  The activity I decided to do for this assignment was to take a field trip off campus, specifically to my field placement. Here I utilized one of the strategies mentioned in the Word Study Instruction in the K-2 Classroom. I decided to do this because after reading this I wanted to get more hands on experience and try out  the strategies. One of the tips listed was to demonstrate how word study can be used in reading and writing. In their ELA time, science is sometimes combined in our kindergarten class. I read aloud a non-fiction book about isopods because we had isopods in our classroom for our science unit. After the book, which talked about the isopods body parts, I made a giant sticky of the different parts. To make it more interactive and fun for the students instead of them telling me the part and me writing the words, I allowed them to do it. We spelled it out and each student got to come up and write what sounds they heard and have been working on. This shows that the students were engaging in learning how word study can be used in reading and writing. I said the word, we read the word and then they wrote it out. This was 2  months into kindergarten, when most came in without knowing their letters or sounds. After reading this article I wanted to utilize the strategies, we have a word study walls called trick words that have king of -ing, are, and, I, and is. My mentor teacher teaches these new words during center time in small groups and then as a whole group we learn more about the word and utilize it in kid-writing. I wanted to try out this strategy in my lesson. I haven’t seen my teacher do this strategy of interactive writing, so I wanted to see how it went. I didn’t tell them how to spell anything or  give them any hints other than tapping it out with them. This was their spelling, most of them weren’t far off!
Tumblr media
Reflection: When I was creating my lesson plan at the same time as reading this article, I asked myself ,“How could I utilize one of these strategies in my read-aloud?” I knew we were going to identify the parts together and then it hit me to allow them to sound it out and write it themselves. This helped me to explore the world through reading of the text and helped me generate new questions about this topic. Doing this helped me understand more about the author and more about the topic of word study in the early years. This allowed me to get hands-on experience trying to do the tips that came out from all of the studies. I got to see how studying the alphabetic layer that students then examine the relationship between letters and their sounds; phonemes to graphemes.
