Reasons why it's OKAY to break the relationship between Nai'o and Kenyatta:
(max friendship and quest spoilers)
- she started dating him as yet another way to spite her mom
- he, a poor farmer who can't even afford to get new clothes, gifted her a limited edition music record of the band she secretly likes
- she lost that record, the chappas buried it
- she made fun of him for not being muscular enough, which made him obsess over trying to exercise more
- they had no interests in common, they just both like animals
- Kenyatta didn't know how to keep a plant alive, proving she showed no interest in what Nai'o does (plus she didn't want to ask him for help, for some reason)
- his room has a photo of Kenyatta on his table, in the tiny room he shares with his little brother where every inch of space is valuable
- in her huge room there was nothing related to Nai'o
- she was mad at him for not being at two places at once when he had to help his mom and she wanted to attend a concert together (he came but was late; she quickly got over it but she knows how her annoyance affected him and yet didn't reassure him later)
- Kenyatta has no relationship with Nai'o's family whatsoever, meanwhile the most important thing for him is his family (that's why keeping the relationship a secret was stressing him out)
- she likes him around because it's better than being bored
- he thinks about her 24/7 (which she later criticizes, saying he's "intense" for thinking dating may lead to something more serious; proving they have different goals in dating)

So I watched the 2 last episodes of Loki (including the finale) and well I have thoughts.
All in all, except for the beginning and the last two episodes, I really thought it was not as good as the first one. (Probably because Majors as Timely was excruciating, I hate when actors are trying stuff like this, it feels forced, it doesn’t work, I wanted to punch him every time he was opening his mouth) BUT …lokius. Yeah let’s talk about it.
It’s crazy to me how in the first season I was all for sylki because I thought their relationship and feelings were really well done and realised (whereas I saw what the mobius shippers saw but thought that it wasn’t really there there) BUT in the second season, I felt absolutely nothing between Loki and Sylvie. There was no more chemistry at all (it was like it never existed in the first place, it was bizarre) and even the actress playing Sylvie played it like a sibling or a good friend kind of fed up, just want to be left alone, not missing him for a second. And Loki pining for her but like a nerd is pining for a cheerleader in a bad teen movie (like boy, you’re not obligated to love her, you know), like you don’t even understand why except for the fact that it was here (emphasis on the was)
NOW Mobius and Loki in the second season ??? BAM 💥 Like sheesh everything : chemistry, banter, touch, exchanged looks, protectiveness, an ease like they are really soulmates. You could feel it all in every single one of their exchanges, it really was like watching a romcom where the protagonist fails to see what is in front of him and I was getting frustrated each time he was going all misty eyes for her, I was like « come on man let her go, we don’t fucking care about her anymore !! » Then, the finale…. The scene with Loki coming to see Don at his place with all the tension of a « is he here for this or ? What should I do? » gay panic, with Loki fucking putting his hair back and taking a breath before going to see him, like WHAT ?! That’s not what a friend does before seeing one other !!! You know what you are doing, so commit for fuck’s sake. But well… then they did (sort of) with the end of the finale. And it gutted me.
The moment with Sylvie and Mobius looking at him through the window… we know you put her there because it would have been impossible to brush it off if it was just Mobius juxtaposed with Loki’s « for you » but we know. I mean the last exchange with Sylvie at Don’s place before Mobius is saying « let time pass » (gu-tted I tell you). You can see that Sylvie is like « whatever » and Mobius is devastated. Also the shot of him in the dialogue was just all Loki’s colors green and yellow (hers was in a normal sunlight, his backlit) That is not an accident, to have these colors you have to plan it the day of the shoot and enhance it in color grading during post. This was a choice.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I am not a sylki shipper anymore (and I even question why I ever was, after seeing the second season : I’ll probably cut myself some slack if I do a rewatch of season 1 because it was well executed at the time) and I’m diving in the pits of despair of Lokius. These fuckers.

"If this is gonna work, you're going to have to trust me."
Jonathan glared down at his boyfriend. He could tell that Steve was trying not to smile, hand still outstretched towards him. "This is your fault, you know," Jonathan muttered.
"I just want some Christmas spirit, is that really so bad, Byers?" Steve lost his fight then, the grin spreading across his face.
"No last names in this house," Jonathan reminded him, finally waving for Steve to crouch down. He supposed he couldn't completely blame Steve. Their coffee table was just too short and they had very quickly discovered a few months back that the chairs in the kitchen could not be stood on. But Jonathan was maintaining that it was completely Steve's fault for getting a tree this tall.
He wasn't expecting for Steve to get completely caught up in the Christmas spirit the way he did. He didn't know why, but Jonathan supposed it came from just never really being around Steve for the holidays. But with the apocalypse averted and the two of them finally living together, once the November anniversaries had passed, Steve dove head-first into the holidays. Playing Christmas records, digging out Christmas classics that Jonathan had carefully recorded back in '84 for El, making hot chocolate for them in the evenings after they got out of their respective jobs or classes.
And that cumulated in him dragging Jonathan out to pick out a tree that morning. One that was quite a bit taller than both of them. One that Jonathan, now very carefully perched on Steve's shoulders, was going to have to somehow trim just enough to get the star on top and hope it didn't scratch the ceiling.
It was worth it though. Jonathan had a growing appreciation for the holidays himself. First with Will coming back, then spending the last two with getting to teach El about different holiday traditions. They missed last year with everything. And that led to everyone appreciating it that much more this time around. And, once he was finally back on his own two feet, he allowed himself to lean into Steve's side, his arm carefully wrapped around him, as the white lights and tinsel twinkled in front of them. "We need ornaments, you know," he pointed out.
"Shhh, just appreciate it, Byers."

The captains overhear Jack on the com with Lorena in the next room before the meeting.
Jack: Yes, I'll be home as soon as the meeting is over. Of course, I'm bringing marshmallows for the campfire. What do you take me for?
Yami: Is Jack on a call?
Charlotte: It appears so.
Nozel: Must he be so loud? How uncouth.
Jack: Don't worry, I'll bring a second bag for us to share while the girls can have the other. Yes. Okay. Love you too, Shnookums.
Charlotte: (looking surprised and disgusted)
Yami: (takes cig out of his mouth to lock eyes with Charlotte and mouthing) "Shnookums"?
Charlotte: (blushes) I don't know, he's a stupid man!
Nozel: How unprofessional. 😑💢
Yami: You're just jealous. You don't have a "shnookums", bird boy.

RexObi Week Part 3/7 - First / Previous / Next
Day 3: Amusement Park Track: 'Friday I'm In Love' - The Cure (Spotify / YouTube)
"The more of these games I see the more I'm surprised there isn't people fighting everywhere."
"Well, I do believe people are not here mainly to win cheap stuffed animals. There are many other things to enjoy."
"Is that why you keep using the Force on the clearly rigged games?"
Obi-Wan raised his nose slightly, carefully tucking his hands behind his back after one last flick of his wrist at a rubber duck with a tiny loop on the top. The squeal of joy from the young child holding a much too flimsy hook nearly drowned out his prim response. "My dear, are you suggesting I would cheat?"
"Well," Rex grinned crookedly. "Never for yourself, but yes."
Obi-Wan made an affronted noise, though the mirth in his eyes couldn't fool anyone in the galaxy, as he slid an arm through Rex's and began walking a bit further. They were in absolutely no rush, the sun beginning to set and stars already blinking above them. It meant that dozens if not hundreds of lights were flicking to life, bright and vibrant in a way that almost reminded Obi-Wan of Force signatures when he was younger. Unfocused, youthful, undetermined futures; a swirl from hot to cold and so much life it was near overwhelming to open yourself to. In fact, Obi-Wan wasn't fully sure how to really feel about this date suggestion, mostly going through with it for the adrenaline of the rides and the sweets he thought Rex would enjoy trying, but leaning into Rex's side and watching that little one proudly accept the stuffed bantha from a perplexed looking worker was quite worth it.
He also found he minded the heat and overall stickiness of things even less when, five minutes later, Rex was crouched behind a water gun with a look of utter clone stubbornness and efficiency, and Obi-Wan was trying not to literally cheer as the clone won his second round in a row. It was all Rex here, beating the neigh impossible game and gathering a few further youngsters around him that wished to watch as he nailed the target perfectly.
"That's insane!" a child to Obi-Wan's right whispered to their friend, who only nodded wide eyed back. "I have never seen anyone win even the first round of this!"
"Do you think he is a bounty hunter?" another murmured.
"Maybe he's a Jedi!"
This last one was said much louder, and met with a small outbreak of whispering that Obi-Wan couldn't help but laugh at, much to the upset of the child that said it.
"He could be!" They defended, small yellow cheek markings rising with his scrunched nose, and the face paint of a rainbow crinkling.
"Well, I can assure you he isn't, young one." Obi-Wan gave a soft smile, as more curious children looked to him.
"Why should we believe you?" the first one asked, their friend still clinging to their side and watching Rex. "How else could he be so good?"
"Because he is one of the best," Obi-Wan answered simply, without specify who exactly Rex was the best of, seeing as Obi-Wan believed it was just about anyone anyhow. "As for how I know he isn't a Jedi..."
Rex then won the fifth round, maxing out the prize and earning the stuffed animal that had caught their eye to begin with as the perfect gift for Cody when they returned home. Though before the stunned worker had the chance to fully process he needed to unhook the creature and deliver it, Obi-Wan had raised a hand for the children to easily see and twisted it up and towards Rex to use the Force to toss the waiting clone his prize.
"It is because he told me himself he isn't." Obi-Wan finished firmly. And before the kids could close their mouths or Rex had finished rolling his eyes, Obi-Wan was once again next to his partner and linking them together to stride away into the crowd.
"Showing off again sir?" Rex asked, handing the plush animal, a varactyl in a strikingly familiar pattern, to Obi-Wan.
"Me? Showing off?" Obi-Wan curled an arm under the plush. "I was merely correcting assumptions."
"The assumptions of a child?" At this Rex had slid behind Obi-Wan more properly, giving an accusing squeeze of strong, lean arms.
"The assumption that you are a Jedi," Obi-Wan turned his head to smile more properly at Rex behind him. "First, I have heard you plenty of times state otherwise, which, in a way you are fully aware of, I am more then grateful for. And second, I know that nothing of the skill you just showed has to do with being born Force sensitive. That was all my lovely, talented, handsome rún."
And though Obi-Wan knew Rex still didn't know the exact meaning of the word he used, he had said it enough to bring color to the clones cheeks even as he shook his head. the he had declared it over in a dozen different circumstances of praise to Rex to make it clear. Knew he had put enough truth in his smile and joy in his eyes to make the adoration obvious, even past how Rex pulled Obi-Wan back into himself more firmly, with a quip already clearly set to make Obi-Wan blush much worse.
So, when Obi-Wan cut Rex off to press a kiss to his lips that gave a much more obvious hint at exactly how much Obi-Wan appreciated watching Rex win the stuffed plush, he was met with more love then Obi-Wan had ever dared want for, and would be grateful every day to have.

I’m desperately need your thoughts on a possible idea but I’m not sure if I wanna commit. Desmond somehow finds his way to Altairs time, specifically right before Abbas begins his takeover and Des manages to save Sef and Malik. Fast forward to everyone’s return, Maria and Darim are like oh my god you’re alive and Altair is like oh my god *blushing*
Obviously Maria is cool with a third (inspired by Maria/Giovanni/Des). Altair is still in love with her but a different love than what’s going on with Des, and Sef and Darim don’t know how to cope that their father is in love and actively having sex with a man significantly younger than they are.
Bonus idea* this is the same universe as your The Relentless Pleasurable Suffering of Desmond Miles on AO3 and Darim is just ranting about everything and Sef is just sweating in the background while Des stares at him from across the yard.
Let’s set up the AC setting first, since you wish to set this after Darim assassinated Genghis Khan, we’ll have to deal with the following:
Desmond’s place in Masyaf while Altaïr and the others are away
How Abbas’ coup affects the Levantine Brotherhood as a whole
Now, we can just chuck Desmond right as Abbas finalizes the details of his coup. However, in this scenario, Abbas’ influence had been festering for a very long time now.
For his coup to be successful, he must ensure that Altaïr and his allies would be discredited to some degree beforehand.
And he has a good idea on how to do it: Altaïr’s Apple and history.
The Apple is self-explanatory at this point and I do enjoy making use of it in some of my fics, like in The Second where Abbas pretty much outright states that Altaïr is hoarding the Apple’s secret for himself.
So let’s focus on how Abbas could push others to his side by using Altaïr’s history. His main points would be:
He went rogue before and assassinated people without the permission of a Rafiq or Al Mualim (an oversimplification of what happened in Altaïr’s Chronicles)
He had failed a very important mission that led to the death of a brother and it’s only by Al Mualim’s mercy that he wasn’t killed for his failure (AC1)
He killed Al Mualim without real proof of his treachery (AC1 - this would gain him the support of those who still believed Al Mualim did nothing wrong)
He spent years away from Masyaf when he should be there, being the mentor they needed during a time of change (End of Bloodlines when he joined Maria in her travels)
Abbas would also whisper poisoned words to the Assassins who feel that their work isn’t being valued enough as the Levantine Brotherhood is structured more on the side of meritocracy. Also, at this point, there are many Assassins who are too young to remember Malik as one of the more promising Assassins in the field before Jerusalem happened. These ones would be those weak in spirit that Abbas could whisper about how Malik became the acting mentor because of his close friendship with Altaïr. Why else would they choose such a man as Malik instead of other Assassins to act as the mentor, considering what he ‘lacks’? It doesn’t matter that Malik has done more for the Brotherhood than most of them. It doesn’t matter that he has lost so much for the Brotherhood.
What mattered was that Malik is stuck taking care of what should have been Altaïr’s job high up the office while Abbas was the one on the grounds, having enough time to observe which Assassin could be turned to his side.
What about Sef then? Sef has a very deliberating factor against him. He’s Altaïr’s son. Considering his age and his current position in the Brotherhood by the time his family left for Genghis Khan, we would be around 19~20 years old when he took the role of Malik’s second-in-command. Whether this is an official position or does not matter. Sef’s high standing in the Brotherhood could be taken as another evidence of why Altaïr doesn’t deserve to be the mentor: nepotism and favoritism. If we include the idea that Malik and Sef were having an affair like in The Relentless Pleasurable Suffering of Desmond Miles, you bet there are going to be rumors about their secret affair as well which will make some of the more conservative Assassins balk.
Abbas might even stoke the flames himself.
The main reason why I spent time dealing with all that setup is that I promise that Desmond managed to save Sef and Malik (and their allies including Rauf because it’s implied his ‘sickness’ had been orchestrated by Abbas) because he immediately went to Masyaf the moment he got kicked into this time period. Desmond easily got into Malik’s office thanks to the ‘borrowed’ Assassin robes he got from the nearest bureau he found before making the trip to Masyaf and he tries to play it off like he had been made aware of a coup.
Malik isn’t stupid. He knows Desmond is not saying everything he knows but he cannot dismiss his claims as well. But, if what Desmond is saying is true, then he needs to see what can be done first.
In this case, nothing could be done.
Abbas’ claws had dug too deep into the very foundation of Masyaf itself at this point. Desmond was simply too late and the tides of change are already on their way.
What they are left with is to either hold their ground or go with the tides.
Malik chooses the later. Because he believed that Altaïr will be able to turn the tides once he returned.
Also, he cannot… he will not risk the lives of their remaining allies and their families just on the chance that they can survive the tides.
Especially his new born son and…
Sef…
(Sidenote: in this scenario, let’s make Malik’s wife his beard who knows about the affair. Hell, let’s make them each other’s beard. Malik and Sef are having an affair and they married two women who loved one another. They planned for their children to all grow up as siblings.)
So Malik gets their allies out of Masyaf. Send some of them faraway missions. Get their families to leave Masyaf to ‘visit’ relatives. Rauf’s declining health got him to send him and his family somewhere else with an explanation of ‘there’s a doctor there who might be able to help’.
Of course, Abbas isn’t stupid. He sees this happening and knows something’s up. He’s not sure just how much Malik knows but he is sure Malik knows something.
So he accelerates the timetable.
This makes it easier for Malik to see his moves though. It comes to a head where both of them tipped their hands: Abbas arranged a late meeting at night. The following dawn, Malik and Sef’s family leaves Masyaf (together with Sef).
So Abbas makes his move. No fancy false charges. No assassination attempts.
He and his coconspirators take Masyaf.
Of course, with such a blatant takeover, there are more Assassins who would not like this. Not enough to push them back as Malik had made sure the ones they are sure are allied with them were far away in Masyaf already.
(It would be later on that Altaïr would ask him why he did not simply do the opposite. Why not have Abbas’ allies be the ones sent away from Masyaf. To that, Malik would answer, “To contain a festering wound, you cut off the limb before it infests the rest of the body. Masyaf’s wound has festered far too long to be saved. Not by me.”)
And Malik was the only person truly loyal to Altaïr left in Masyaf. Everybody else was either on Abbas’ side or those who didn’t care either way.
Just as Malik planned.
Because this way, Abbas would have a prize. Abbas’ anger and thirst for vengeance would be quenched even for just a bit.
And…
Malik was betting that his death would be enough for Altaïr’s eyes to finally be opened. For Altaïr to finally do what he should have done all those years ago when Abbas used the Apple during the burning of Al Mualim’s body.
For Altaïr to finally let go of his childhood hope that Abbas would finally see the truth and they could reconcile their shattered friendship.
Even if it wasn’t…
Malik was betting that Sef would avenge his death.
And that’s when Desmond comes in and saves him. Malik is unsure how Desmond was there when he specifically ordered Desmond to ride to Alamut to tell the Assassins there about Abbas’ plans and to ask for sanctuary for their allies.
Desmond did that… by sending a pigeon then keeping an eye on things in Masyaf all in an effort to find a good time to assassinate Abbas (didn’t work. Abbas had become too paranoid because of all the moves Malik had made).
Malik is the one who stops Desmond from killing anyone, tells him that doing so would further fracture the Brotherhood.
So they run.
They meet up with their allies in Alamut and that’s where they stay, sending pigeons to all the bureaus and other Brotherhoods about what has happened in Masyaf.
(And on this part a scene between Malik and Sef concerning Malik’s plan and Sef chewing him out for it)
And it’s in Alamut that Altaïr and the others go to after their mission was done.
Just enough time has passed that Desmond was able to store the important memories in the memory seals in Alamut for Altaïr to watch.
No matter what questions they ask Desmond, he refuses to answer any of their questions.
Because he wants to tell Altaïr first.
He wants Altaïr to be the one to know who he truly is.
More than anything, he wants Altaïr to be the one to decide his fate in this world he finds himself in.
Unorganized Notes:
We can go either way with how this pairing would work. Either we make this full on Altaïr/Desmond/Maria where Desmond becomes both of their lovers or this is more of a case of Desmond being Altaïr’s lover and having a close friendship with Maria.
If you prefer for Desmond to be Altaïr’s lover alone, it could be that Altaïr and Maria’s relationship had changed. They still love one another but they feel no urge for anything physical anymore. But Altaïr felt it once more for Desmond.
In this scenario, Altaïr and Desmond would start their relationship only when Maria gives her blessing. Before that, there’s gonna be pining on both sides that everyone could see.
Once they start their relationship, it’s gonna be tricky because Altaïr wouldn’t want to hide Desmond at all while Desmond would want to hide their relationship because he knows Abbas could use their relationship to further smear Altaïr’s reputation.
And that is when Altaïr decides to do what he had always been planning to do: retire.
There will be the 12th-century version of “Oh god, he’s finally having his midlife crisis” outrage, and the fact that Altaïr is doing this AFTER Abbas’ coup will be fanning the flames even more.
So they make a compromise that Altaïr will retire once they get Masyaf back but he also makes preparations for his final contribution: to push the Brotherhood back to the shadows.
At that point, the plot can either: focus on the plans to get Masyaf back or on Altaïr and Desmond’s developing relationship. (Pick one and the other one will become the background setup, kinda like plot B)
Darim and Sef would have an awkward relationship with Desmond. Darim more awkward than Sef as Sef would play off the awkwardness by joking “should we call you ‘father’ as well?”
Sef is honestly ‘oh okay’ son in this scenario because he is in a similar situation with Malik.
Oh yeah, Altaïr and Maria knew about their relationship BEFORE they went to assassinate Genghis Khan. They were just waiting for Sef and Malik to fess up.
They still gave them hell and Altaïr enjoyed giving the shovel talk to Malik just for the hell of it.
Malik turned the table on him later on by saying that, since Desmond is technically an orphan (“He’s an adult, Malik.” “Who needs someone to keep an eye on him and it’s certainly not going to be you. How much have you spent on the gifts you’ve given him this past month, hm?”), he gave Altaïr the shovel talk as well since he is the ‘adult’ (“Again, he’s an adult as well”) who had worked closely with Desmond the most.
I do have the habit of making Darim have a crush on Desmond so if you want Darim to be super awkward, make him have a crush on his father’s lover. XD
Darim ranting about Altaïr and Desmond’s relationship to Sef is funnier when you remember Darim knows Sef and Malik are secretly lovers. Darim had assisted Sef more than once in making sure Altaïr didn’t know about it so he’s ranting to Sef knowing Sef can relate to Desmond more than anyone in Alamut. He’s doing it on purpose to make his little brother squirm.
Maria would definitely have tea parties with Malik and Desmond. Desmond dubbed it the “Altaïr Support Club” and the name stuck.
If Maria is part of the pairings, pegging will be involved. Desmond would definitely be the most bottom of the three of them and there will definitely be scenes where Maria or Altaïr watches Desmond getting the life fucked out of him.
Also…………… kinky sex making use of the Apple’s hallucinations and mind control capabilities.

@dumpster-fire11011915 giving me the wonderful gift of an excuse to ramble about something, thank you so much
I must preface this by saying that some of the stuff I read a while ago, and I can't remember names of the papers' authors so... if you want that lemme know and I'll dig it out... at some point. I'm just repeating stuff so don't take my word as gospel please!
But basically it's like... it would be nice if there was one neat, easy to find reason for all those men dying, but there isn't. No smoking gun type thing (and there rarely is in history, it's a web/weave of factors and such, and sometimes we just will never know for sure)
ANYWAY. The lead poisoning is a pretty common theory, it was quite popular a while ago but has since been... well disproven as the main cause, but it would have been a factor in the deaths of some men. Lead levels don't seem to be higher than in others people of the same time. Other expeditions around the same time and for the same length didn't fare as badly. Compared to today, there was a lot more lead around, and in building up in people's bodies. Also, different people react differently to the same amounts of lead, so while it probably caused symptoms in some of the men, it might not have been the main factor for others, maybe not even more than a minor factor. As for the source of lead, I think they concluded that the tins weren't a very likely source? The water system would have added lead content. 19th century England had a lot of sources of lead. But also, I haven't retained this info very well.
A thing to note is that, when starving, the body begins to break down tissue it wouldn't normally break down. The high levels of lead found in a crewman's fingernails can be explained by the fact he was badly underweight as his disease accelerated towards his death, and lead was being released from his body into his body as it broke down. I need to find this paper/bit again because I'm not repeating that with much confidence... But the lead levels could be explained a few ways.
The tins, often pointed at for the lead issue, more likely added another problem: botulism. Food poisoning would do absolutely no favours to the crew, especially as many of them would have been carrying diseases already. Things like typhus were a problem in the Royal Navy at the time. There is an account that one author took from Inuit testemony and suggested could be referring to a hospital, set up away from the ship. The same author also suggests that some of the items found on King William Island could be explained by the men leaving the ship as a result of infectious disease, and all of them bathing and changing their clothes before walking south. While I'm not sure how much I guy into it, the suggestion is worth bearing in mind, because we KNOW there were diseases preying on the crew.
The three men who died at Beechey have been autopsied, so we know (and I forget lol don't mind me) what they died of. Tuberculosis was definitely one of the causes, and it's one I sort of stick with because TB was rife at the time. It was caught by breathing in infected particles from a sick person and it could lie dormant in the body for someone's entire life without killing them. The immune system of a health person was often enough to keep TB in check. However, many people in the 19th century were not healthy. You can imagine that it wouldn't take long for every sailor on a ship to at least have TB in their system, even if they didn't become symptomatic.
But, with nutritional issues weakening the body, things like TB would leap at the chance to ravage the body. I would guess that a lot of men were sick with it. There is another paper (the one I read most recently) that uses Inuit testemony again to explore the idea that it was TB the men were suffering with - the reference to mouths being black was the focal point for that. There are things like tobaccoo and poor oral hygiene that could account for blackening, as well as something you may have noticed I haven't mentioned yet: scurvy (more on that in a minute).
TB, as we think about it, is the coughing up blood disease. It can attack other parts of the body, and miliary TB could account for some of the symptoms the Inuit noticed in the surviving men. But, then again, a fair few things could. I'm not a medical person so all of this is just me repeating details I've gathered by being completely normal about dead people.
Anyway, scurvy. The scourge of all voyagers and adventurers left for too long without access to sources of vitamin C. Bleeding gums, teeth falling out, wounds un-healing, bruising, weakness, sudden death. If you've seen The Terror, you know. Deny a human their Vit C, and shit starts to go quite horribly wrong. Undoubtably, this was a contributing factor in the mens' deaths. But also, other vitamins and minerals would have been deficient in their diet. I'm not a medical person, so I don't know specifically what an absence of each vitamin does to the body, but it's not good. The deteriorating quality of food, the deterioration in the mens' contidioning, etc... They're going to get sick. And, remember, food poisoning. Something we think of as quite simple these days, like diahorrea, is a killer.
Remember those dieases the men would likely have come onboard with, and spread to crewmates? Guess what also sucked at the time: Healthcare. Never mind diminishing supplies, often the treatment administered was to bleed the patient, and give them an emeic. It's something that wouldn't be done these days, but was a part of medical care back then.
We've also not touched on the environmental things, like exposure. A disproportionately high number of officers seem to have died between the two Victory Point Note 'entries', and a suggestion for this is quite simply that officers put themselves at risk more often than the crew. They led the men, and were the ones who did the scientific experiments - it was a scientific research expedition, after all. But the numbers of men dying (at Beechey, and then up until the ships were abandoned) wasn't typical for the time. A lot of factors seemed to come together very unfavourably.
As for the mental state, and compromised decision making... We all know you only have to be a bit sleep deprived, somewhat stressed, run down with a cold, and things get so much harder. What might look like an irrational decision to us now might have made more sense in context, but there were illnesses and nutritional deficiencies which would really mess with cognitive function (a thing I've not retained as much detail about, which is ironic!).
So, so far we have: diseases endemic at the time (TB, typhus, etc), illness (food poisoning, dysentry, etc), nutritional deficiencies that would lead to disease (vit c/scurvy, etc), environmental injury and expose (hypothermia, accidents), starvation that would have weakened the body's ability to fight off/recover from the aforementioned factors, and environmental toxins (i.e. lead).
I haven't mentioned venereal disease (VD) yet, I wish I could do more than just a paragraph on it, but it gets a mention too, because we know at least one of the sailors had syphillis. VD was fairly common, so a number of the crew would have had it, and sypilis is one that progresses quite horribly (not that any of them are fun). Tertiary syphilis does not fuck around. Even if those who had VD weren't experiencing severe symptoms, treatment for the diseases was unpleasant. And how long would medicine supplies have lasted??
SO yeah, that's... some of the stuff gathered together in my brain about the health/illnesses of the FLE crew. There isn't one thing we can point to as the culprit, although some sweeping statements can be made (e.g. poor nutrition would have contributed to their deteriorating health). I think if looking a this topic (like with every other one) it's important to hold all the details in mind and consider how they fit together. There's also stuff I haven't looked much at (clothing, victualling, etc), and this is all just cobbled together from reading academic articles. As I said, I can list the ones I've read, they're somewhere...
...After a brief scroll up, if you read all that and paid attention/enjoyed it, I love you XD
