Through the Illustrated Veil
Pairing: Ren x Isekai!Reader x Solivan Brugmansia
Summary: You awaken to discover that you’ve been seamlessly transported into a realm where visual novels are real life.
Note: If people like this idea, I will turn this into a series. This will have yandere tendencies later on! This is a crossover between 14 Days with You (14dwy), The Kid at the Back (tkatb), and The Coffin of Andy and Leyley (tcoaal). I might add on other visual novels if people request more or if i like the story is going and want to add more. The reader is kind of clueless, but just for this first part. The artwork isn’t mine!
Tumblr media
Prologue
Slowly, you opened your eyes, and the world came into focus. It was as if you had stepped into the frame of a beautifully illustrated book. The colors were vivid, the edges sharp, yet everything pulsed with a gentle breath of life. You immediately sat up with a gasp, your heart a beat behind the realization that dawned upon you– this was no longer your room, your world.
“Hello?” Your voice came out as a whisper, yet it seemed to carry across the room. The door to the room opened, and there two figures emerged. It was two people you instantly recognized–
Andrew and Ashley Graves from The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. Once known in the realm of visual novels, now stood before her in the flesh.
“I see that you're awake now Y/n” Andrew said calmly. Ashley turned to her brother with an annoyed look on her face.
“Yes, we can both see that Andy. Thanks for stating the obvious.” Andrew turned towards her and the two started bickering. Meanwhile, you were still trying to comprehend what was occurring right before your eyes.
“Umm…” as you began to speak, unsure of your next words, the two turned towards you. “So, where are we?”
The two gave each other a confused look and responded simultaneously, “In our home”.
“Home?” That didn’t sound right, the last thing you remember was Andrew and Ashley killing their parents and taking their home. And from the looks of it, this didn’t seem like it was their parent’s house. “Okay…” you responded, yet still unsure.
“We’ll leave you alone for now, but remember you have school in a bit and work a little later on. See you later sis.” The two left, leaving you stunned. School? Work? You don't remember anything about this visual novel having school or work. And what was this about being their sister? You decide to get out of the bed that you were on, and make your way to the door. Once leaving you instantly recognized where you were. This is the apartment from 14 Days with You.
You made your way to what appeared to be the front door of the apartment and left, too lost in your thinking to say goodbye to your “siblings”.
You made your way down to the bottom floor, and went outside to get some fresh air and think things over. You found a bench and sat down.
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley and 14 Days With You are two of three of my favorite visual novels. The only one that's missing is… oh. You know now. Going to school, it all makes sense now. The last one was The Kid at the Back.
Am I already friends with Sol and Ren or do I have to become friends with them? Sighing you decide to get up and start walking.
Wait, I don't even know where the school or my work is! You thought. But it didn’t seem to matter, since your legs seemed to walk on your own.

Me trying to think fake scenarios/concepts for fics with Andrew:
He’s obsessed with his guitar. He’s constantly carrying it around and it annoys the fuck of you because the thing is always in the middle.
One day he’s in a flirtatious mood, trying to serenade you:
“Baby, I’m trying something here.” he fakes to be annoyed by you rolling your eyes.
“What exactly?”
“This is a serenade just for my beautiful-“ Andy makes a lot of moments around her, being dramatic and awkward making you stop him with just resting your hand on his arm.
“And I’m here just trying to kiss you.” She angrily states. “But that thing,” you point a finger towards his guitar in the middle of your bodies. “It’s in the fucking middle.”
As the nerdy like man that he is, Andrew takes the strap holding his beloved guitar off and proceeds to round you with his large arms.
“There…” he brings his face impossibly close but doesn’t kiss you. “You can kiss me now.” He winks making you cringe a little, but you equally love it.
“Oh,no…missed your moment! You prefer-“ but he interrupts you with a kiss that takes all the air out of your lungs.

hi andi ok so I was having hadestown byler thoughts again and first of all. whenever I imagined the "death" I figured it would either be an actual death or it would just be will going to the upsidedown bc obviously mike doing everything in his power to get will back from the upsidedown mirrors the orpheus and eurydice thing. but then uh thought about that smoosnoom post with the eurydice quote and the fact that it's put over pictures of possessed will, when he's losing himself and his memories, WHICH IS ANALAGOUS TO HOW DEAD SOULS IN GREEK MYTH SWIM IN THE RIVER LETHE AND LOSE THEIR MEMORIES. so now, is eurydice will dead? in the upsidedown? possessed again? all of the above? idk but the potential just gets cooler the longer I think about it and I had to let you know. anyway slightly different topic but still hadestown byler though, idk what would happen with hades and persephone plotline aksjddkfk. like I generally say "orpheus and eurydice byler" instead of "hadestown byler" unless I'm trying to be quick about it bc hadestown has a very specific interpretation of the characters that I feel doesn't always map perfectly onto byler (for example. personality types don't line up) and I'm more interested in a byler version of the myth itself inspired from any or all iterations of it and not just specifically a hadestown au. but even if you take out the hadestown interpretation of hades and persephone I still don't really know what you do with that. bc the obvious answer for hades here would be henry except a. who is the persephone?? and b. henry doesn't seem like a very sympathetic person anymore, if he ever was, and a big part of the story is that hades sympathizes with the young lovers. like yeah the myth says it's persephone who feels sorry for them and convinces her husband, but a. that still means he's got some modicum of empathy and shit, and b. hades himself is only unwilling to let them leave bc it sets a precedent for letting everyone else leave. not bc he just wants to keep eurydice around. which again is definitely different from henry. so yeah idk what to do there. I'm sorry I just realized how long this ask is I am very long winded
alright rori, let's do this. setting a timer of 45 minutes for myself because like always, i have way too much to say but also i gotta prep a fic to get posted tomorrow LOL.
okay, so like i think i mentioned answering one or two of your other asks, i saw this a couple days ago and didn't have the energy to answer it yet, but i have been thinking about how i'd answer it. and now i know how i'm gonna answer it lol.
first, i'll say, i think your point of this is that there's a difference between solely orpheus/eurydice byler and then hadestown byler because obviously hadestown is more niche and interprets the myth slightly differently. so i'll talk about orpheus/eurydice byler first, then i'll talk about my thoughts on hadestown byler.
my thing is: byler is just orpheus/eurydice coded in general, as we all well know. and i think the more i thought about this, the more i realized that the show itself (at least the byler part of it) can be viewed as its own retelling an interpretation of the orpheus/eurydice myth, just (hopefully) without the tragic ending.
i mean it's right there in front of us in s1, right? we see eurydice/will being taken into this story's version of the underworld—the upside down. then orpheus/mike spends the entire first season trying to get him back. it's missing that obvious point of the "hey, don't turn around when he follows you out, because you'll lose him" but i'll come back to that in a second.
then, in s2, yes! i love what you're saying about how in greek myths, the river lethe leads the deceased person to lose their memories. so that really then is like will's possession, and so, wow. we again are put into this instance where our orpheus has to go after his eurydice and get him back. mike reminds will of who he is and of the love they share between each other.
but still, we're missing the deal orpheus strikes with hades, and its tragic end. except... maybe we're not?
because in both s1 and s2, we see that the way stranger things has its orpheus make it the underworld to save its eurydice is through a new character—through el. in both seasons, it's that friendship mike forges with el that in the end leads to will's rescue. this is more of a stretch than the way byler fits into their orpheus/eurydice roles, but in a way, mike's relationship with el kind of represents that journey out of the underworld and the tragedy the myth ends with.
mike "saves" will in a sense, but also... he loses will too. the key in orpheus and eurydice's demise is the doubt orpheus begins to feel, right? he wonders if he's been tricked, and he makes the fatal mistake of looking behind him, dooming eurydice to her demise and ending the story in a tragedy.
this, in a more metaphorical sense, could be compared to how in s3/s4 we begin to see mike's own self doubt, the decline in his mental health, how he shuts down, and hides behind his relationship with el. mike's looking behind him—his mistake that causes him to lose will—is something he says himself in s4: that he was worrying too much about el and lost will in the process. so, like in the original myth of orpheus and eurydice, it's the very movement and action that are meant to save eurydice that doom the two lovers. with mike and will, it's the very person who saved will and brought him back to mike twice who ultimately then comes in between them.
(btw, it's not el's fault, obvs. she's not really included in this metaphor/comparison because she doesn't really fit into the myth in a sense, but you know i love my girl and this whole mess isn't her fault either lol. there's probably something there that could be talked about with how el represents the "path out of the underworld" that st's hades aka vecna/henry/one offers to our orpheus. something that would dive more into the messy history of el and henry and the mentoring role he sort of played in her life until they broke off and like. nearly killed each other. but again, that's just an aside.)
anyways, where we then converge from the orpheus/eurydice myth is that when orpheus loses eurydice, he can never get the chance to get her back again. the story ends, and eurydice is dead. orpheus is alone. but as we all see at the end of s4, we see our orpheus and eurydice get a second chance. maybe mike did feel like he lost will because of his relationship with el. he did "turn around" in a sense. but by the ending scene in the cabin, i believe mike knows his priorities again. he makes that promise to will that they'll figure out how to defeat vecna together. they'll stop him together. so if this can be read as an orpheus/eurydice retelling, the ending will be different for them. :)
okay, now on to my hadestown thoughts!
these are all just my personal thoughts about how i might go about writing a hadestown byler fic, because i think for it to be an au of sorts, i'd want to have it set in that little world hadestown has built. as i just rambled about above, i think st's canon can almost be read as an orpheus/eurydice retelling itself, so if i wanted to write about it and dig deeper into the myth, this is the interpretation i personally would go with because i just love hadestown lol.
i mean, you know me and how i write rori, so i'd end up pulling bits and pieces i like from the material and then tweaking as i go. so if i ever wrote this, it would be hadestown (kind of), stranger things (kind of), and orpheus/eurydice (kind of) lol. first off, i like the hadestown setting. i like the concept of it not quite being a death, i like the way it frames a world that is struggling because of others' greed, and i like that within it, there's also a political statement showing how there's power in people standing up against oppressors.
we know that the demeanors of the orpheus/eurydice in hadestown don't line up to mike and will's characters. but what i like about hadestown is that eurydice gets a lot more agency in the story here. she makes that decision to go to hadestown, and unfortunately, it's made in desperation and also fear. but then, when we meet them again in the second act, we see that eurydice is also the primary encourager to orpheus. that they can make it out of here. that she believes in him to show her the way out. that they'll do this together, and that they will lead others with them.
so imagining with mike and will, for me, it'd end up being some sort of cross between their st backstories and the hadestown backstories (so maybe they grow up as childhood friends still, but then they fall in love with each other). established byler my beloved <3 we see mike get stuck in his head and hyper-focused, as he is prone to do, and we see this impact their relationship during hard times in the winter. it makes sense with their canon socioeconomic backgrounds, right? will is more focused on what's in front of them. they have to eat. they have to survive. he doesn't necessarily come from privilege, where mike more so does. so maybe that's a point of contention between the two, and that drives will to make the decision to go to hadestown.
mike, of course, isn't going to leave him down there, so as we'd expect, he goes after will. he goes the long way to hadestown, and he's determined to save will, to bring him back, to do better, to not lose will. because at the end of it all, even with all their flaws and the struggles in their relationship, mike and will love each other. i think el would probably be the hermes in this scenario—the one who helps him gets there but in this story, instead of el being able to help mike save will, she can't. maybe her powers are limited. maybe, if she is more like hermes, she can't necessarily make a decision that impacts another god's domain.
which brings me to your other question about hades. you're absolutely right that hades is more of a sympathetic character, and though he's the antagonist of the story, he's arguably not a villain? he's just a grumpy capitalist lmfao. personally, i still think the real villains here were the fates, but that's a whole other story.
you could, i suppose, if you wanted to—make hopper and joyce your hades and persephone. hopper in earlier seasons and his grumpy gruffness does give those kind of vibes, and we know he and joyce can and will argue with each other when they're at odds lol. but idk, if i did end up writing the hadestown au, i probably wouldn't go that route, just because i do think henry fits the "villain" character better.
so, uh... i think then, that would mean this eliminates the b plot of hades/persephone, so from my perspective, i imagine this then becomes more a discussion on henry as an oppressor and hadestown and henry representing a system of abuse (in the way the upside down and henry do in the show). like i said earlier, i like thinking the fates, who are manipulating the whole situation, are the true villains here, so i'd probably write it where henry is both hades and the fates. he plays the sympathetic role and manipulates mike in their confrontation, offering a way out for mike and will, but then turns around and is also that voice of doubt coaxing mike to turn around and doom will back to hadestown.
anyways, those are just some of the thoughts i've had, and i'm nowhere near to the point where i have the time to write a hadestown/byler esque kinda au... but if i did, i'm sure i'd have more coherent thoughts and ramblings to share eventually lol!

The first people to congratulate her, were her parents. They called her, in the middle of the night; they forgot that time zones exist. But her heart was full when she picked up the phone at 3AM and both of her parents where singing ‚happy birthday‘ to her. What wasn’t so good, was that she had to be asleep, because it was a Sunday and race day! But it didn’t matter, it was her birthday!
Two hours later, her phone was ringing again, but this time not because someone was wishing her a happy birthday, no, it was her alarm. But today it was okay. 5AM on your birthday doesn’t feel that early, does it now? At least it didn’t for her.
Andy, her personal trainer, knocked on her door at exactly 6.30AM, holding a tiny cupcake with a candle in it. „Happy birthday, y/n!“, his voice cheerful and happy. Her smiled widened and her heart full with love again. „Thank you, Andy.“
„Are you ready for the race?“, Andy asked her. She nodded and closed her hotel door. „I’m excited to see Danny again and Nando and all the other people of course. Oh and definitely Lewis.“, Birthdays were her thing, she always missed them in school, either she had them on a weekend or she was on holiday. So, being surrounded by people who are important to her, was the best present she could’ve gotten.
On the way to the paddock, Andy let her pick out the music, her car playlist was blasting on full volume. Tongue Tied by GROUPLOVE was her favourite song at the moment, that’s why she was singing at the top of her lungs to the lyrics.
„Take me to your best friends house, go around this roundabout, oh yeah“, she looked at Andy as if he would follow the orders of the song.
The music died down, as they arrived at the paddock. Press was already waiting on her, they knew it was her special day and hoped to get some good footage of the birthday-girl. Usually the media annoyed her this early in the morning, but today, nothing could’ve ruined her day. She smiled and waved to the camera, spoke to some press people and had nice conversations with all of them.
The media always tried to find some gossip, especially on the young driver, but not today. They were happy to see her this happy.
As she set foot on the paddock, people were congratulating her. Pads on the back, some strokes on her arm here and there, everyone was nice to her, and who doesn’t enjoy some attention sometimes. Especially if it’s for something you didn’t work for. It was her favourite day of the year, Christmas is second.
„Danny!“, she shrieked as soon as she saw him. She sprinted towards the Australian and jumped into his arms. „I missed you so bad!“ Daniel just laughed and hugged the young driver. „Happy birthday, y/n.“
Her smile was consistent and contagious, every person she smiled at, they just had to smile back. Even Max smiled at her. Well, he always smiled at her, she was one of the persons that could make him smile.
„Max, can you give me a piggyback ride?“, she looked at him with puppy dog eyes and he just couldn’t deny her. „Of course, zus sister.“
As Martin Brundle spotted the two, he motioned to his cameraman to put the focus on them. „And now we see Max Verstappen carrying the birthday girl y/n. It is not rare to see the young driver interact with the different drivers. Let’s wish her a happy birthday“, he talked into the camera. „Hello you two, happy birthday y/n, am I the first to congratulate?“, the older man looked at her with an amusing look on his face. „Martin, as much as I love you, you are hopefully not the first person to wish me a happy birthday“, she looked at him with a serious face.
„Did Max congratulate yet?“, a challenging look on Martins face, he pointed at the camera and said: „Remember, this is a livestream.“, Max‘ cheeks turned a pretty pink colour and y/n gasped. „He did not!“, she gasped. „Max, you didn’t wish me a happy birthday?!“ - „I’m sorry, schat darling. Happy birthday, my dear.“
But how could she hold a grudge against a face that looked like Sid from Ice Age?
Fernando was the next person she saw, and he instantly grinned at her. „Oh Nando, do you know whose special day it is today?“, she singsang to the oldest driver on the grid. „Hmm, let me guess, is it Roscoes?“, he laughed as he saw her shocked face. „How could you, I thought we were friends?“ - „We are, we are, cariño darling. Feliz cumpleaños happy birthday, y/n.“
„How old are you now, 5?“, he laughed at her. „Har har, very funny Nando. How old are you turning this year, 60?“ She was always getting irritated fast. He grabbed her by her hip and pushed her into a side hug of his. „Don’t ever change, cariño.“
„Don’t have a plan for that, who’d change something as fabulous like this“, her hands were pointing to herself. „But on a serious note, Nando, do you know where Lewis is? I’ve been searching for him.“ Fernando only shook his head, he didn’t know where the British driver was. He rubbed over her hair as she left his side to search for her mentor.
„Oh Lewis! Your favourite person is looking for you“, she shouted over the paddock, with no luck. She didn’t even see a trace of Lew, none. But what she did find, was a monegasque driver with the number 16 and a spaniard driving under the number 55. They were arguing over some bullshit, as always, as they spotted her. „y/n! Over here“, Charles shouted over to her and waved his hand. She ran over to them and greeted the older drivers with a side hug. Carlos quickly kissed her head as he wished her a brilliant birthday. Charles even sang the first to lines of the song.
She was a bit embarrassed, but she enjoyed the attention of the two Ferrari drivers. „I love you guys, but have you seen Lewis?“, she smiled at the two as they rolled their eyes. She just wanted to see her favourite person on the paddock. She loved them all equally, but you couldn’t deny that Lewis definitely was her favourite. „I think I saw him at Mercedes, his motorhome“, Charles told her, she totally missed the sarcastic undertone of his and just skipped along to the Mercedes garage.
Before she even set a foot in the motorhome, Toto Wolff approached her and squished her into a hug. „Alles gute zum Geburtstag, liebes! Happy birthday, darling! How are you, so happy to see you“, he whispered into her ear. She loved Toto. „Hi Toto!“, she grinned up at him, „I’m good, thank you. Do you know where Lewis is?“ Toto laughed and pointed to his drivers room. „Thanks!“, she yelled as she took off.
She hasn’t been to her own motorhome, just wandering around the paddock and taking in all the attention from the others. And as she knocked on the door, she knew she’d receive the best attention of them all.
„It’s open“, she heard and busted into the tiny room. „Hello, your favourite human on this planet has arrived and will be gracing your presence from now on!“ She grinned at him and he only laughed and embraced the girl. „I have a present for the birthday girl? do you know where she is“, he joked and turned around to grab her present. „A present? Aw Lewis, you shouldn’t have, you totally should have.“
The present contained some gag gifts, such as a Mercedes hat and shirt, or some shirts with funny pattern on it. But the original present was a necklace. It wasn’t anything special, really. It was a simple silver necklace with a tiny turtle as a pendant. Her eyes were tearing up, so she quickly wiped them away.
„Is this one of the necklaces that makes you a godparent of a sea turtle?“ - „It sure is, have fun with“ he turned the pendant around and looked at the engraving on it „Yertle. He is now your godchild“, he smiled at her and motioned to y/n to turn around, so he could put the necklace on. „Thank you so much, it means a lot“, she hugged him as a thank you. He smiled at her, he adored the young driver and was grateful that he was apart of her journey.
„Thank you, love you Lewis!“, she yelled to him as she sprinted out of the motorhome. She was finally headed to her own garage. They had planned a surprise party for her and Lewis was the distraction. As she reached her motorhome, she didn’t see anyone. „Hello, is it not race day?“, she joked into the dark.
„Happy birthday, y/n!“
She jumped, her heart was racing, but she had a giant smile on her face. Her heart, once again, was full, full with love.
„Ahh, thank you guys!“, she squealed and sprinted into the engineers and mechanics, just like she won a race, which she hasn’t, by the way. She hugged all of them, thanked all and smiled the biggest smile she ever smiled. „I’m so grateful for all of you! And now, let’s win this race!“
She didn’t win, but was one of her best birthdays so far. And the after party was her personal highlight of the day. There was a huge pile of presents, just for her of course.
Lando was the DJ, Max was standing on a table, preparing to do a toast for her and Danny was laughing and pointing his camera at everybody.
The evening was definitely something she’d remember, maybe not Max‘ toast, as it was very embarrassing;
„Dear people, we have gathered here to celebrate not only my win, but also a birthday of some special person. She is not our girlfriend, which we are all happy about, but they’re all jealous of her, y/n! Happy birthday, you beast, come up here!“
The alcohol definitely made it more bearable, but the fact that Pierre had to drag you to Mac spoke for itself.
„Pierre, let me be, go back to your boyfriend“, she spoke harshly to the French man, but he ignored her with a smirk on his face and brought her up to Max.
„Ladys and gents, the birthday girl herself!“
It was one of the better party’s she attended and when she looked at all the posts she’s been tagged, she found one particular that she liked the most.

Let me know if you want to be added to the taglist! (And I’m sorry if I missed you, I love you)
The scent of flowers is nauseating but with a knock on your door, Rafe ignores it as best as he can.
It’s been several days since he’s seen you, the longest he’s gone without any physical contact. His texts were met with one worded replies or none at all. Having done a stellar job of avoiding him. Taking new routes to your lectures, roommates answering the door saying you weren’t home, skipping your Ethics class, the seat glaringly empty beside him.
Rafe knew to give you some space – if only for this once. The incident with you, him and Topper had shaken you greatly, no one had ever seen such an argument between the two of you. His best friend had given him a thorough tongue-lashing that morning after your exit. A reminder from Rafe about Topper’s general creepiness towards his sister had him shutting up instantly.
Before, Rafe had believed you were slowly - but surely - getting used to him being a fixture in your life. He wasn’t stupid enough to think you were fully submitting, of course, but he knew you would be able to get there. With time.
He’s let you have your little tantrum of silence. It was a mistake to treat you so harshly, even if you had wasted a hundred dollars worth of good product.
You’re home alone today. He’s made sure of it. Camped outside your townhome for the past two hours. All your roommates had gone out for various things, filing out one by one. The only one left was the most annoying: Daniella.
While Louise and Andi gave knowing smirks whenever the group was together, Daniella always had a strained smile. As if she struggled to let him anywhere near you.
To ensure her absence, he had recruited the help of Carson. Telling him to lure his girlfriend out so Rafe could talk to his.
He rasps on the door again, calling out your name.
“Open the door. I know you’re home.” When there’s no response, Rafe fist hits harder. “Open the damn door.”
He repeats your name multiple times as he jingles the doorknob. After a few more tries, he sighs and gives up. It didn’t have to go this way.
The click of the door is quiet, Rafe soundlessly closing it as he pockets his copy of the key. Slyly walking through the foyer, the back of your head appears when he comes into the open living room. The crinkle of plastic as his hands squeeze the stems makes your head almost fall off from how fast you look behind.
“What in the actual hell, Rafe?” Pushing off the couch, you cross your arms. A faint line creased between your eyebrows and Rafe can’t help but notice you aren’t wearing a bra. “How’d you get in here?”
“Spare.” Rafe simply says. “Y’know, just in case of an emergency.”
“Or to sneak in here like a fucking creep.”
“No…for when my girl is ignoring me.”
Rafe lifts the bouquet up, savoring how you take in the view of your favorite flowers in white and faint pink. Taking a step toward you, a minute flinch ticks at your shoulders. Rafe stops.
“Well, you can throw them in the garbage on your way out.” Your ponytail swishes when you twirl back to plant yourself on the couch. “Go away.”
“Aw c’mon baby,” Groaning, he rolls his head back. He rounds the couch, standing in front of the TV. Extending his arm out, he presents the flowers again. “How about you find a nice vase for these, and I’ll make it up to you.”
The stupid comment grants him exactly what he wants, your attention on him. Eyes like needlepoints hoping to puncture him.
“You can do so by leaving.” You turn the volume up, and you focus back on the TV.
It’s the dismissal that has Rafe’s ire prickling his skin, his patience splintering.
“Alright, that’s enough. I gave you plenty a time to pout.”
Your lips puff with your incredulous. “Pout? Pout?” You swat at the bouquet. “I’m not pouting. I’m fucking pissed and tired of you.”
'Pissed off' he could deal with. The pouting is cute. Your tears are an intoxicating aphrodisiac. But to be tired of him?
Oh, no.
No, no, no.
Rafe squats down, supporting his forearms on his knees as he looks up at you through his lashes. Staring at the upwards angle of your face, he doesn’t have to wait long for your eyes to nervously meet his. Containing his anger has never been his forte. You simultaneously ignite his fire to a roaring inferno and wash it down until there’s only embers left. At the moment, he was between the two.
“I’m sorry, okay?” He blows out a breath. “I, I should’ve never gotten like that with you. Forgive me, angel?”
Leaning the flowers forward, the petals tap once against your bare knees. A deadlock between wills of opposing nature. Your facial expressions switch like the flipping of pages, the language of you becoming easier to understand the more time he spends with you.
“Apology unaccepted.”
Snatching the bouquet out of his grip, you stand and beeline for the kitchen. Rafe rights himself up, following you lazily. Playing his own game of shadow with each step and turn you make. Your slamming cabinets left and right until you find one beneath the sink, almost cracking the glass of a long vase with your force.
His gaze skims over the flimsy material of your sleep shorts, and the way your breasts slope beneath your tank top. Your hands busy themselves with arranging the stems and such, actively ignoring his presence. Hands in his pockets, Rafe takes measured strides until he’s a hairs length away from your back.
“…I never got my hello kiss.”
Your glare radiates so potently that Rafe doesn’t have to look to know it's there. Placing his hands on your hips, he walks the tips of his fingers inward and smirks when a quiver to your lower belly ripples across. Lips kiss at the tension in your shoulders, thumbs molding like dough into your sides.
“I’ve missed you…” His tongue peaks out, tasting the skin there. A hand travels down to play with the waistband of your shorts. “Missed this cunt, too.”
“Rafe – wait,” The hitching of your breath is so sweet he cups you in his wide hand in a fluid downslide. The pinching pain of your nails into his wrists has him stilling, lingering. Your neck stretches as you look back as your features pinch in. “I’m…I’m on my…y’know, period.”
He wants to believe you – truly he does – but lies spill from those pretty lips all the time so…
Frustrated whimpers break loose between your bitten lip while Rafe continues down, your head leaning on his shoulder in defeat. Swirling the tip of his middle finger closer to your hole, the touch of roped cotton has him pausing. A string.
Damn it.
Rafe sighs and trails up your slit to lightly stroke your clit once more before he’s slipping his hand out, keeping it low on your warm pelvis. It rises a rumbled chuckle from him, peering down at your weak glare. This close to your face, he can see all the small imperfections that add to the mosaic of your beauty. Gliding his other hand up, he passes a ghost of a touch to your chest before it lands with a curl around your throat. The addition of it pushes you fully into perfection.
Humming and eyes hooded, Rafe draws out a peck to your lips. The warm, soft contact is barely a kiss, just a need to feel you closer that has Rafe relaxing a fraction. “C’mon then.”
Leading you back to the couch, you resume your previous seat that looks more like a nest with a bundle of blankets, a heating pad, and candy there. Your eyebrows shoot up to your hairline when he lays the warmed pad on your lower abdomen, wrapping a fuzzy throw around you then tucking you under his arm, situated to lean against him. Propping his feet on the ottoman, Rafe focuses on the TV which plays some sort of reality show.
Your suspicion rises like steam, muscles strained with preparation for flight. It isn’t until halfway through the show does Rafe feel your body incrementally slacken and by the third, you’ve fallen asleep.
So, if the show happens to stay on there’s no one around to judge.
Rafe likes it when you’re asleep. Can freely stare at you without an icy sneer or bitchy remark to ruin the moment. Just a doll nuzzled deep into the side of him resonating a humming of snores.
His peace is ruined by the vibrating of his phone. He checks the screen.
Ward
With care, Rafe eases up from the couch and repositions your head so it’s against a pillow then heads into the kitchen.
Ward hardly calls him. The proportion of Rafe’s outgoing calls to him weighs heavily unanswered. Taking a deep breath, he picks up.
“Hey, Dad. What’s up?” There’s an eager edge to his question and Rafe hates it.
“Rafe, checking in to see how you doin’?” Ward’s deep timbre carries easily through the speaker.
“Good. I’m good.” Rafe looks at the back of the couch, smiling. “Yeah, I’m actually at my girl –”
“Listen, bud,” His father starts. “You got any plans for spring break? Wantcha come down so you can help me start up this new project. It’s a big one.”
Rafe pumps his fist into the air silently, excitement coloring his voice. “No, yeah, totally! I can do that. I’m up for it.”
“You sure? This is legit business and I need you to have a clear head. That means no…partying when you’re here, ‘ight? No funny stuff while we do this. Can you handle that, Rafe?”
It isn’t the serious tone of his father’s gruff voice that has his excitement evaporating. It’s the impending disappointment there like Rafe has already fucked up. Ward giving him a chance and still expecting failure in the end. A flash of hurt burns through but Rafe shakes it off, tells himself that he deserves it considering his track record.
“You can count on me, sir. I swear.”
A pause. Rafe thinks Ward might give encouraging words. A squeeze of a hand for support, words he’s heard him tell Sarah.
Only it’s: “See you soon.” And that’s that.
The dual beep from the phone lets Rafe know Ward’s hung up, just as a ‘love you’ was balancing off his tongue. He must be busy today.
“Who was that?”
Your voice rises from the couch before your head pops up, hair all fluffy and ruffled. Eyes are a bit puffy from sleep as you blink them open. The late afternoon sun creates a soft yellow hue through the windows, catching onto strands of your hair, soaking into your skin. Rafe is momentarily blinded by the view that it takes him a second to respond.
“My dad.” Carding his fingers through his hair, Rafe smiles as the thrill returns. “He wants me to assist with a new job. This is huge for me!”
Yawning, you stretch and get up from the couch. Rafe keeps his body angled to yours, head nodding along to his babbling as you fill a glass of water.
“If he could see that I’m ready – that I’m ready to get serious, I’ll finally be a part of the Cameron legacy. My legacy. It’s about time he’s bought me into the loop…sure I’ve been tagging along since I could remember but this time, he wants my input. I’ll be able to share my ideas and he’ll have to listen.” He sighs, winded. “It’s too bad I’ll be gone for spring break –”
“Really?”
You’re at the edge of the peninsula, hip leaning against the counter as you take another sip. Your eyes shift from his to elsewhere, fingers drumming an uneven beat. Adjacent to you and with his hands braced on the counter, Rafe slides closer. Spreading his fingers apart to reach out a pinky to stroke your own.
“Don’t miss me too much.”
Scoffing, you swipe your hand away. “As if.” Your face softens a little into curiosity. “What does your dad do again?”
Shock rocks at his heart and it's damn hard to keep it in. He can count on one hand the number of times you’ve shown genuine interest in conversation with him.
“He owns a development company. Operates daily with the construction of buildings and those type of things.”
“Oh.” Your eyes are open and inviting, the slightest tilt in his direction.
Rafe steams on ahead, wanting to keep your attention. “Yeah, he started it all on his own. Born on the other side of the island. Actually made something of himself… unlike those dirty pogues down there now.”
It’s automatic to sneer out the slur. He can’t help the disgust he feels just thinking about that side of town.
One of your eyebrows raises. “Aren’t you, like, fourth generation to attend UNC?” Your chin juts out. “Wouldn’t that mean your family has had, like enough money to go for so long?”
Rafe could crack a tooth from the grinding of his teeth. You’re not the first to connect the dots but you certainly are one of the few to vocalize it.
“Third.” Rafe sucks his teeth in. “The Camerons may have started out on the Cut, but they grew to be more middle class. Only the truly elite are on Figure Eight.”
It infuriates him to no end of that simple fact. That just before he was born Ward was making his way through the Cut and into Figure Eight, the right side of the island. Where he – they always belonged.
Your eyes roll with a tilt of your head. “So, not really a pogue, not really a kook. Just an ordinary man like the rest of the world. Y’know, stepping on that island is like being in a fucked up alternate universe.”
“Don’t be dramatic.”
“I am not!” The stomping of your foot says otherwise. “It’s the worst place I’ve ever been.”
“It’s the best place.”
It’s amusing to watch your cheeks puff in frustration. “Only because of the little notoriety your family has there.”
A slow smirk spreads out like elastic, leaning into you. “Well, of course, sweetheart.”
With anyone else, Rafe would be squashing them beneath his shoe like a bug for a comment like that. With you, however…he finds he wants to know all your thoughts regarding him, the good and the bad. Suck in all the information he can, leach off every emotion you hold for him. The anger, the disgust, the begrudging pleasure.
At the same time, Rafe doesn’t have to hide behind a polite smile or use his charm to peruse you. He’s his real self. The most based form of a soul he struggles to hold onto. Wants to lay the shreds of his soul at your feet like a sacrifice, irrevocably intertwined together.
A peculiar look morphs on your face. Like when you’re working through a difficult assignment. Unmoving, focused but this time on him, which is extremely rare. Usually, you shield yourself away in a layer of ice that solidifies you.
“What?”
“What?” You parrot back, lashes blinking rapidly to break your connected gazes.
“What are you thinking about?” He angles his head low to follow your eyes.
Rafe half expects the typical retort of: ‘You don’t need to know all my waking thoughts.’
“Just…Doesn’t everyone on the island think he was a true pouge?”
So, you have listened to his rants before.
“People remember and think what they want to. Ward doesn’t have to answer to any of them.” His eyes narrow. “Why?”
Your fingers begin to fiddle with themselves. Twisting fingers in knots, squeezing the tips in a random pattern.
Again, he asks. “Why’re you so interested?”
“What? Now you’re gonna be mad I’m talking to you?”
Sass is a defense mechanism you use often; one Rafe finds the most annoying but just as addictive to combat with. It continues in his silent stare.
“I guess… I’m just confused why you would want to work with him so badly?” Your tone goes from curious to condescending within a blink of an eye. “If my dad treated me like that, I’d want to be as far away from him as possible.”
The straightening of his spine is immediate. “You don’t know shit about my dad.”
“Just that he treats you like shit –”
“Shut up –”
“Bet he’d love to know his only son is a psychotic rapist!”
His eyes bulge. A moment of stillness that enraptures the both of you. The bickering was reeving him up to ravish you across the countertop. Now, his mind whirls from the total 180 you’ve pulled on him. Never has he heard you utter those condemning words before. Rafe didn’t think you’d succumb to that dark truth, let alone say it out loud.
A scoff hiccups deep from his chest. “What fucking proof you got of that, sweetheart?” Shifting closer, your face pinches in as Rafe leers, “Your wet cunt cumming each time I force it in?”
It’s a low blow you take with stride, a flinch before you're sneering. “What about that little coke problem of yours?”
There.
There it is.
The real reason you’ve gone down this path of conversation. Nosing your way into things pretty girls like you shouldn’t concern yourself with. Much less with the intention set in your shoulders.
“You trying to blackmail me?” The chuckle comes low, barely a sound of amusement. “Oh, honey,” Rafe mocks. “You didn’t know he already knows?”
The façade of your bravado crumbles, a half step taken back with weary eyes. He tsks and cocks his head back, disappointed. With a sudden swing of his arm, the back of his hand knocks your glass of water to the other side of the room. The shattering of glass and your shriek harmonize, creating the perfect symphony to his sudden charging to you, arms an unknown mix until he shoves you against the wall.
Both hands hold your throat. Nails pierce his skin and scratch along the length trying to find a better leverage. The squeezing doesn’t stop until your eyes are pleading and swimming in the dark waters of fear.
“I may be a fuck up but I’m still his son.” Jerkily releasing you, your head wobbles on your neck. Hands barricading you in, Rafe lowers his head until your noses touch. Your panting breaths feed his next ones in.
“Don’t threaten me if you can’t back. It. Up!” His final warning is yelled, vibrating against your lips as his palms smack beside your head with each pointed word.
Your tears have gone unnoticed until you curl to the side and his lips taste the salty moisture upon your skin. Normally, the sight of them would soften his anger and harden his cock, leading the situation to hot make-up sex.
It isn’t enough. Not today.
Not when his future is within his grasp, his for the taking. Not with the knowledge of you trying to get rid of him, the idea as pointless as it is terrifying. Going to desperate measures when you should be desperate for him.
With a practiced move, Rafe retches your hair between tightened knuckles and pulls until your neck is a long arch and facing him. He ignores the pain-filled yelp and weak hands patting his chest.
“You want me to force you? Is that it, baby, huh?” Rafe hisses.
He hauls you down until your knees fold beneath you. A sick delight like seasickness rolls down to his groin as he growls. Weak defiance lives in your eyes, frowning with his name on your tongue. It's a tug of war between Rafe’s hand and your struggle to rise, keeping your hair taunt. It’s the sight of him unzipping his fly that has you hitting his thighs with a renewed alarm.
“Rafe! Stop it –”
“Keep fightin’ and you’re only gonna make it worse f’yourself.” Rafe warns another yank just to hear you shriek.
Fisting the base of his cock, he pulls it out through the opening. He aims for your mouth, but you cringe making the tip smear on your chin. Rafe tuts, guiding your head right where he wants, and flexes his arm, sure to hold you in place.
“C’mon n’ open up,” he drawls. “Take your punishment.”
Stroking up to the tip, his thumb sweeps along the ridge and tilts his hips forward, hovering just above those plush lips. Tapping the red flesh on your closed mouth, Rafe splays his hand on your chin and squeezes on the delicate bones until your jaw unhinges with a wail to relieve the pain.
Like a serpent striking, he’s pushing in before you can react. Bumping against the roof of your mouth, the rigids of your hard palate make him jerk with sensitivity and envelop the next few inches. The hot, wet rush has sparks crackling up his spine. All that heat and anger spirals down to his cock, the need to claim brooding in his balls. Grunting your name with each gag you give, his thumb caresses the corner of your lip as he watches enthralled.
A part of him wants to take his time. Use gentle strokes to coax your mouth open, train you with patience to swallow his cock just right.
Instead with a mean smirk, Rafe plunges half his cock in. The clenching of your throat makes it hard to go in deeper, the constriction of your resistance inflames his pleasure. The underside of his dick feels the rippling of your tongue like a wave, chasing after it eagerly. Your high-pitched whines are muffled by the weight of him, gargles of air getting blocked as he teases the opening of your throat.
“Can’t believe I’ve gone this long without fucking that mouth of yours.”
Saliva accumulates, thick and slippery as his cock triggers your gag reflex, spit dribbling down your jaw. Your drool coats him to create a smooth glide, lower abdomen tensing, and stuffing further in. Such a pretty sight seeing you like this, gurgling and coughing between the space of your cheeks and his cock. Eyelashes clumped, a darkening hue on your cheeks, small fistfuls of his jeans. Your gagging clinches your throat, locking him in tight before it flutters open.
Rafe allows you to pull back far enough to catch a breath. Coughing out into shaky inhales, lips puffy from abuse and slicked with combined spit and precum. Standing above you like this gives him the most delicious view of your stretched neck. From the tip of your chin to the swell of your cleavage in an expanse of skin that should be carved into marble.
Words tangle as you stutter and gasp, Rafe hushing you with faux tenderness. “I’m going to fuck ya throat now…”
Weaving his fingers once more into your hair, Rafe pushes back into your avoiding mouth. Your fighting ignites a primal urge of take, take, take within him. A bloating want fills his void. Sticky and black as tar that he wants to pour onto you, anoint you with his devoted desecration.
There is little mercy with the pistoling of his hips, ass clenching in pointed thrusts. Mummering encouragements of that’s it, such a good girl and various pitches of your name, Rafe feeds you his length with a fevered urgency. The squelching of his dick opening your throat layers with his low moans, watching as each inch disappears until your lips are kissing his pelvis.
His hips jerk involuntarily as a tickling of pleasure jolts him, your wet bottom lip moving on the sensitive spot just below his base and above his heavy balls. It feels so good and you’re not even actively sucking on him. Just a soft wet home for him to press in farther, another place he has laid claim to.
Fringes of hair droop between his eyes, almost hunched over as he pulls his hips to ram back in. Wet spots glisten on your chest, staining your tank top. A relentless pace fueled by rage and an ache.
“Fuck – ah – I’m gonna cum.” Rafe says hoarsely and tilts his head back if only to starve off his orgasm by looking away. “My good lil’ slut…swallow my cum.”
Angling your head up, Rafe slides his cock down all the way to the root. Grip tightening on your head, he rocks side to side to wiggle in as much as he can. You're choking helplessly as he fucks so deep, it feels like he might reach your heart. One hand skates down to your neck and palms the bulge, holding it there to experience the swell of it. Minuscule thrusts nudge the back wall of your esophagus, his thumb rubs up and down where the head sits.
The scrunching of your eyes and difficult breaths boosts his ego but he needs to see you. Needs you to see him.
“Look at me.” His fingers press in painfully. Eyes flickering half open, the devastation set in your irises kindles his breaking point. “Ugh,” he grunts your name like gravel between his teeth.
Stilling in the depths of you, Rafe cums.
Your muscles intuitively constrict and swallow, suctioning him with hot, white pleasure. The wet of your cheeks is like velvet as you drink his cum.
Seconds or minutes pass before he loosens his hold. Loud choking fits break between your breathing once you're free from his cock, covered in a layer of drool and residual cum. Rafe pets your hair, trying to smooth out the knots he’s made.
You’re still crying as he calms down from his high, face nuzzling into his hip to hide. God, he’s going to get hard again with you looking so pathetic.
“Did you learn your lesson, pretty angel?” Dragging rough fingers through your hair, he bunches a handful and barely pulls, your neck like a snapped cord as your head flops back. An index finger tenderly traces down your cheek to your swollen lips.
“Any more empty threats and I’ll rape your mouth until you pass out.”

face in my hands. listen to me. no just. just listen. like. i think on the whole fandom tends to heavily mythologize what certain songs are "about" despite this never being solidly confirmed to be the case and fob (pete in particular) generally try not to say without question What Songs Are About because they want people to take whatever meaning they can from it. but from now on we are enemies is one of the exceptions to this rule to a very limited extent and by that i mean that on two separate occasions, during the hiatus, patrick and pete shared a little bit of what the song was about on twitter, independent of one another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you haven't seen the film amadeus it's about a rivalry between two historical composers, wolfgang amadeus mozart and antonio salieri. salieri loathes mozart and finds him supremely childish and annoying...but also irritatingly brilliant beyond words. salieri obsesses over wanting to see mozart fail and even plans on killing him, but they do eventually form a friendship. then mozart gets sick and dies. salieri essentially breaks and loses his mind and years down the line will claim that he murdered him.
the name of the song, "from now on we are enemies," is a direct quote from the film. but it's not talking about mozart. it's a furious diatribe that salieri flings at god himself. he's so wildly and deliriously envious of mozart that he feels like this is divine punishment and so he declares god his mortal enemy for bestowing mozart with such brilliance. from now on we are enemies, you and i.
this is, i should note, one of the last songs fall out boy wrote before the hiatus. this and "alpha dog" were considered "new" for the believers never die greatest hits compendium, but alpha dog was technically debuted before folie released, on the welcome to the new administration mixtape. then fall out boy went on hiatus and there was no guarantee of return.
like i dont know what to say about this song that hasnt already been said. its fucking deranged as all get out ill tell you that much. its fucking unhinged that this song, this song with this central thesis statement, is one of the last songs you wrote together as a band before going your separate ways without any guarantee that you would reform again. and it's THIS. IT'S THIS SONG. a song that laments about whether anyone will remember you when you're gone (reminds me of flu game, reminds me of so much (for) stardust the title track, reminds me of .... so many of the themes inherent to their eighth studio album. actually.), and a song that practically lays out its inspiration for all to see. for a band that seldom if ever discloses with actual intent the Meaning behind their songs, this is a song that discusses a HIGHLY FRAUGHT ARTISTIC RELATIONSHIP and it's hard, it's real damn hard, to see anything but what is clearly all on display. composer but never composed (patrick has always considered himself a composer first and foremost). singing the symphonies of the overdosed (pete played a song that was named after the drug he tried to overdose on with his band mere nights earlier). i'm just a man on a balcony singing no one will ever remember me (again there's the fear and dread about the legacy you leave behind just before the band goes their separate ways).
can't fucking lay out the sheer psychological damage this does to my soul just thinking about this. they played MISS MISSING YOU the night before. just, you know, one of the other Songs that's so hard to disentangle from the hiatus because of the way it was written (patrick wrote the music while making soul punk, felt like it wasn't for him, and set it aside...despite there being, again, NO guarantee that the band would ever reform at this point, and then the song was only completed once fall out boy decided to come back, with joe and andy adding instrumentation and pete adding the lyrics) and whose music video features patrick and pete literally KILLING EACH OTHER. from now on we are enemies. i need to walk into the ocean. i need to lie down. im inconsolable.

Me trying not to tweak out when I see people reduce Ashley to fap material and “omg hot crazy girl with mental issues I can fix her” 🤪 :
Tumblr media
I honestly can’t stand people who fetishize mental illness but that’s a whole other post.
If you’ve seen my posts before, you know I have beef with the Reddit TCOAAL community 😂. (I’m not being serious, I just get annoyed with some of the behavior there). This is one of the reasons I ultimately left recently, but the main reason was that someone posted a picture of Leyley (little Ashley) and asked what you’d do if you found her in your house. Most of the comments were about physically harming her and some were even making sexual remarks 🧍🏻‍♀️. I’ve seen them do it to Andy (little Andrew) too. I wish I was joking. Sorry but I just find it weird to speak about children that way even if they’re fictional. I just got really uncomfortable and I was like ok I don’t want to be in a community with y’all anymore 💀.
I think a lot of people on the subreddit like the game for the incest and nothing more, like they’ll say “omg I can’t wait to see them have sex in ch.3” 🤪 but then they’ll completely miss the mark on Ashley and Andrew as characters.
I’ve gotten downvoted on there before because I said supporting real life incest isn’t a good idea and that it shouldn’t be encouraged… like wtf?
Honestly it’s a shame that they only like the game for that reason, because the story is so interesting, the characters are well written, and the art style is great. That’s why it sucks to see people label it “the incest game” because there’s actually a lot more to it than that, anyone who’s played the game and watched a play through of it knows that. That’s why the controversy never made sense to me.
So yeah, no shade, and I’m not trying to be mean, but I can tell the Reddit community is filled with a bunch of annoying horny teenage boys 😶, and also some… strange people. Sorry if that’s mean to say but 😂. I was like yeah I’m out of here lmao. Thank god for the Tumblr community.
Ashley’s backstory is so tragic. She’s such an interesting character, I just love her 💕. It sucks when people ignore that and completely downplay her character.
This is all just my opinion. I’ve been meaning to make a post about this because they’re some thoughts I had for a bit. Thanks for reading :)

The Enemy of my Enemy
Seungmin x Female reader
Word count: 5.1k
Synopsis: Your soulmate's name on one wrist, your enemies on the other, and no way of knowing which is which. Having Kim Seungmin’s name on your wrist could only mean one thing after years of torture he was, no doubt, your enemy.
Tumblr media
A/N: 18+ ONLY! The poll was overwhelmingly for this soul link to be next. A lot of people were saying it was a take they hadn't seen before or often. I thought it was unique too and it screamed Seungmin to me. I didn't go too crazy with smut in this, others will have more. As always warnings and smut below the cut!
Warnings: 18+ ONLY MDNI! Cursing/ strong language, mentions of bullying, excessive drinking, vomiting, unprotected piv sex (please use condoms), cream pie. That's it yall. If I happened to have missed something let me know and I'll add it!
Tumblr media
If you would have known when you turned twenty-one that Kim Seungmin’s name would appear on your wrist you would have cut off your arm. Okay maybe that was a bit drastic but the last thing you wanted to see every time you looked down was his name. He’d tortured you through most of middle school and high school. The other name on your other wrist, Andy Cope, he sounded nice. You tried to imagine what he looked like, what kind of person he was. How this worked was one of the names that appeared on your wrist was the name of your soulmate, the other, your enemy and if Kim Seungmin’s name was on one of your wrists it was for one reason and one reason only. He was your enemy.
What was crazy was in primary school, you and Seungmin had been inseparable, best friends. You weren’t sure what happened. You left for a summer between primary and middle school and when you came back he was... different. Mean. It started with ignoring you, even if you walked straight up to him he just turned and acted like he didn’t see you. It was embarrassing the couple of times it happened and then you just stopped trying. You didn’t even know why he was being the way he was but you were just a kid and it hurt you so if he wouldn’t talk to you about it then you wouldn’t talk to him either. As time went on just ignoring you wasn’t fun enough and he started to torment you. Every day it was something any little thing he could do to upset you, like sliding a broken ink pen in the back pocket of your new jeans, he would tell new kids that although you looked normal you had brain damage from falling off a toilet, on three separate occasions he’d changed your name in the yearbook to Chu Bocca. They eventually stopped allowing him to work for the yearbook so he had to find other ways to pick at you and he did, every... single... day.
When you finally graduated high school you were so relieved to be going to a college far far away from Kim Seungmin. Or so you thought. To say you were a little upset to see Seungmin at your freshman orientation would be an understatement. Truthfully as soon as you saw him you ran back to your dorm, fell onto your bed and cried. It had been seven years, did you really have to go through another four? When you were done with college would he move next door to you? Would he always be right there to pick at you? Tear you down for reasons you didn’t even know? It’s not fair you thought to yourself. In all actuality Seungmin had no idea you had even applied to that college, it was your second choice and his first. It wasn’t like he was going out of his way to follow you. He’d looked forward to not living in the shadow of his pain anymore but he saw you as you dashed away from the freshman orientation and his heart sank.
The summer in between primary and middle school had been really hard for Seungmin. He missed you terribly. Fourth grade he’d developed a bit of a crush on you. By the summer before middle school, it was full on puppy love. Then one of the boys from your class showed Seungmin a note that looked like your handwriting. It said that he was annoying and that you were glad to be gone for the summer so you didn’t have to pretend to be his friend the whole time. The boy who showed Seungmin the note said that you had given it to him because he was your boyfriend now and you didn’t want him to think you had any feelings for Seungmin. The boy said to stay away and to not bother you anymore. Poor Seungmin’s heart was broken, he was hurt and angry. If you didn’t want to be his friend anymore fine! The first day back at school you walked right up to Seungmin and acted like everything was perfectly normal. He was gob smacked and when his brain finally caught up he just turned and walked away. He did the same thing the next time you tried to talk to him.
Then you started to ignore him and that made him even more angry. Who were you to be mad that he wouldn’t talk to you when you had said what you said? That’s when the little petty picking started. Seungmin would never do anything that would get you into big trouble or anything that would hurt you. He was mad at you but he would never want to hurt you like that, no matter what you did to him. Seven years. No matter how much he said he hated you to anyone that would listen, deep down every year Seungmin loved you more and more which only made his pain grow more. He had been looking forward to his own fresh start at college and then he saw you running away and it seemed like any chance of that happening ran out the door with you.
Whether you were there or not Seungmin decided to stick with his plan. This was a new place with new people, a fresh start, and that’s exactly what he did. He made new friends and avoided you if he could but didn’t make a thing of it. Once classes started it wasn’t hard since you were both so busy with your workload. You actively avoided Seungmin which made his job of staying away from you easy. That was until Seungmin’s twenty-first birthday when he looked down and saw your name on one of his wrists, he quickly looked at the other and knew instantly what it meant. You were Seungmin’s soulmate. You of course wouldn’t know this until your own twenty-first birthday unless he told you and there was no way you would believe him even if he showed you. A couple weeks after your birthday you got a text from an unknown number.
Unknown: Uh... hey.
You: Uh... who’s this?
Unknown: We’ll get to that, for now just know I’m someone you know and probably don’t like very much.
You: Seungmin?
Unknown: Dammit!
You: 🙄 What do you want Seungmin? Why are you cryptically texting me?
Seungmin: Well it was your birthday a couple of weeks ago...
You: Yes it was, I’m surprised you still remember when it is.
Seungmin: Well don’t you think we should talk about it?
You: What is there to talk about Seungmin? It’s not surprising, is it?
Seungmin: You weren’t surprised?! I have to say I definitely was.
You: I don’t know why, you’ve hated me for years, of course you’d be my enemy.
Enemy? You thought he was your enemy?! Did you hate him that much? He never hated you; he was hurt and immature. He’d learned since then and the last couple years away at college had made him grow up a bit. If you thought he was your enemy you must be pretty certain that the other name was your soulmate. He wanted to know.
Seungmin: What’s the name on your other wrist?
You: Not that it’s any of your business but Andy Cope is the other name.
Seungmin was so confused.
Seungmin: How do you know him?
You: I don’t
Seungmin: Then how do you know he’s your soulmate and not me?
You: Are you actually being serious right now?
Seungmin: YES!
You: I’m not doing this Seungmin, you know you’re not my soulmate you just want to fuck with me. We’ve been civil and leaving each other alone here. Let’s just keep doing that.
Seungmin: Wait... I’m not fucking with you listen!
You: No. Seungmin drop the soulmate thing.
Seungmin: Just let me tell you something!
You: Whatever you want to tell me Seungmin I don’t want to hear now leave me alone!
Seungmin: This user has blocked this number
Seungmin was so frustrated. He only wanted to explain that he knew he was your soulmate, he knew because the name that appeared on his other wrist on his twenty-first birthday was also Andy Cope. Obviously you both didn’t have the same soulmate, and to have the same enemy was extremely rare but it did happen. Seungmin went to pull you up on social media but you blocked him there too. After that he never saw you around campus. Before he’d see you here and there but now he never did. He was hurt all over again, just like that summer. He just couldn’t believe you hated him so much that you believed he was your enemy. He was a pest yes, and did things to bother you constantly, mostly for attention because he was a dumb teenager but he never did anything to actually hurt you. He would never because underneath all that anger was a broken heart. He was certain when you said the same name that you would know who this Andy Cope was. The name sounded so familiar to Seungmin he just couldn’t place it.
A few months after blocking Seungmin it was time to head home for break. Seungmin was home too but still hadn’t seen you. He was still stuck on that name Andy Cope, Andy Cope... He pulled out one of his old yearbooks and started thumbing through it. It was seventh grade. He got to the page with your picture the name under read Chu Bocca, it was the first year he’d done that. He’d honestly hoped you would think it was funny, you both watched Star Wars a lot but apparently pubescent girls don’t like to be called a big hairy ape man. Then Seungmin saw a face he hadn’t thought of in years. Robby Hobbs. Robby left in the eighth grade when his family moved. Robby was the boy that had shown him your note, or the note he had believed to be yours, and threatened Seungmin to stay away. Then Seungmin remembered something he’d learned from one of Robby’s old friends after he’d left. It didn’t seem like an important piece of information at the time, so he’d forgotten until now. Robby was adopted and his birth name was Andy Cope.
You were bored, it was Friday, your parents were away for the weekend. You decided to go out to the bar and have a drink or two, try to actually relax and loosen up a bit, enjoy your break. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t think about Seungmin every time you looked down at his name. You’d also be lying if you said you didn’t ever wonder if maybe he was right. Maybe he was your soulmate. The way you were as children, so close you knew even then, you had big feelings in your tiny body. The older you got the more you realized those feelings had been the budding of young love. Young love that was squashed. You were your fourth drink in, you hadn’t planned on drinking so much but your mind got the best of you and the more you thought the more you drank. Suddenly a large man who smelled of alcohol and sweat sat next to you at the bar. You glanced over and realized you actually knew who this gross man was.
“Robby?” He looked over at you.
“Well if it isn’t y/n, Jesus Christ are you as miserable as you look?” His words dripped with venom. Your face contorted.
“Excuse me?” That was a lot coming from a guy that looked like he’d just rolled out of a gutter.
“You and Seungmin still at each other’s throats still after all these years?” What did he know about that? He moved away not too long after that happened.
“Best thing I ever did was give Seungmin that note. He tried to hide it but his poor little heart was broken.” Note? What note? What was he talking about?
“Robby what the hell are you talking about?” He laughed.
“Didn’t he ever tell you why he was so mad when you came back? Why he stayed away?” You shook your head and Robby started laughing his ass off.
“Oh that’s fantastic! I expected the silent treatment to last a few days, maybe a few weeks and then you’d figure it out but holy shit! It’s been like what ten, eleven years?!”
“What did you do?” He wiped his tears away and looked down at you.
“I scribbled a shitty note and told Seungmin you wrote it to me. Then I told him to stay away from you because you were my new girlfriend.” You were disgusted at the thought and how could Seungmin believe you’d do something like that?
“Why the fuck would you do something like that Robby? What the hell did we do to you?” He laughed bitterly this time.
“Because you both were so fucking annoying. Always giggling and whispering, talking shit about me behind my back so I put an end to it.” Your jaw dropped.
“Robby we never talked about you! What the hell is wrong with you!?” He motioned for another drink, when the bartender sat it down Robby grabbed it and got up grumbling.
“Gotta live with both your stupid names on my wrists for the rest of my life.” You stood up a little wobbly.
“Wait what did you just say?” He showed you his wrists and your’s and Seungmin’s names were there plain as day.
“How is that possible the names on my wrist are Seungmin’s and someone named Andy Cope.” Robby rolled his eyes.
“And I was born Andy Cope. When my parents adopted me they changed my name to Robby, guess fate didn’t get the memo.” He snatched his arm from your grip and walked away . You realized that if Seungmin’s name was also on Robby... Andy... whoever, if Seungmin’s name was on his wrist then his name was on Seungmin’s too. That was how Seungmin knew you were soulmates, that was what he had been trying to text you but you were too stubborn and proud to listen. Robby had caused so much pain with just a little piece of paper. You feared the damage was done. Seungmin had pushed you away for so long and now you’ve pushed him away. What if you couldn’t fix things, what if it was too late? You drank and worried, doing far too much of both. Once you were good and drunk you grabbed your phone and unblocked Seungmin’s number.
You: I dkdnt wsrite that noteee I justs thow=ght you shsould know.
Seungmin: y/n? Are you drunk?
You: a lilbit
Seungmin: I think its definitely more than a little, where are you?
You: I met Andyd coppe tongihst
Seungmin: You saw Robby? Where are you?
You: Howd youy knsow he wassss Adny?
Seungmin: y/n just tell me where you are so I can get you home safe and we’ll talk tomorrow when you’re sober.
You: You sate me I know syous do You ahte me I dinsdt’ wrire it Min
Seungmin: I DON’T hate you y/n please tell me where you are
You: the bar...
You: Lousie’
Seungmin: Louie’s bar? Stay there I’m coming to get you.
You: mkayy
Seungmin jumped in his car and sped all the way to Louie’s bar. When he got there, he started looking for you everywhere. You weren’t by the bar or the shitty makeshift dance floor, not by the pool tables. Then he saw you slumped over passed out in a booth. He hurried over and started trying to wake you up.
“y/n come on wake up, can you hear me?” You hummed and attempted to open your eyes.
“I hear you Minnie...” He helped you up and by helped it was more like heaved you upright in the booth. All your body weight went against Seungmin’s and he struggled a bit.
“You’re gonna have to help way more y/n I can’t drag you all the way to the car.” You nodded and leaned into whisper into his ear, your breath smelled like whatever sweet concoction you’d been drinking to get this hammered.
“I’ve got a secret Min cm’here.” He leaned in close so that you could tell him and he could get you out of there.
“The first time you changed my name to Chu Bokka in the yearbook was kinda funny...” He smiled a little and shook his head.
“It was never funny, it was mean and I shouldn’t have done it. Now come on help me out here a bit.” Even drunk, you were surprised to hear him say that. When he put your arm around his shoulder you managed to plant your feet and help him stand and steady you.
“Think you could walk?” You nodded and the room started getting spiny. You stumbled quite a bit but Seungmin got you to his car and inside. When he got in he looked over at you and you were already slumped over again asleep. He reached over to buckle your seat belt and you hugged him out of no where.
“Please don’t hate me an’more... I don’t hate you...” He shooshed you.
“I already told you y/n, I don’t hate you. Get some rest, I'll get you home.” You laid back in the seat again and took a deep breath relaxing and dozing off again. Seungmin sighed and shook his head before heading towards your parent’s house. When he pulled up it was dark and your folk’s car wasn’t there. He gently shook you to wake you up.
“Hey y/n... is someone home?” You shook your head.
“Nnnoo, itsss why I went out, momndad are gone for the week’nd” He started grabbing at your pockets looking for your keys and you tried to pull him closer and kiss him. He stopped you.
“y/n no stop, you’re wasted.” You pouted and he finally found your keys. He helped you out of the car, once he got you to your front door, he made you lean against the door frame while he unlocked it. When he grabbed you to steady you again and get you inside, you tried to kiss him again. He pulled away.
“I told you to stop that, now come on y/n” He was a little exasperated with you but drunk you thought he didn’t love you. Your eyes got big and teary and you sniffled.
“It’s ruined, Robby, Andy whoever the fuck he is ruined us.” Seungmin shook his head.
“No he didn’t you’re just drunk, we’ll talk about everything when you’re sober, I promise.” You allowed him to lead you to your room.
“Will you stay?” You were still crying, sniffling. He didn’t want to leave you alone with your parents gone.
“If you behave, I will stay.” You nodded and half heartedly wiped at your tears. Seungmin sat you on the edge of your bed.
“Where’s your pajamas?” You started unbuttoning your pants and Seungmin quickly turned away.
“What the fuck are you doing?” You kicked your pants off and pulled your shirt up over your head tossing it too.
“I sleep naked.” Seungmin pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head.
“Not tonight you don’t, not if I’m sleeping in the bed. Now what drawer are your pajamas in?” He walked over to your dresser refusing to look in your direction.
“Top.” He opened the top drawer and fished out some shorts and a tank top. He held them back for you to grab. You pulled the pajamas on and laid back in your bed exhausted. Seungmin climbed in and pulled the covers over the both of you. As soon as he was laid back your arms found his and hugged it close while you buried your face in his shoulder. He looked down at you and pushed a little hair away from your face. He shook his head and laid back closing his eyes.
When the sun came through your bedroom window you cursed yourself for not closing your curtain. How could you have pulled such a rookie mistake and forget that when you drank last night. You knew damn well the sun came in that window early. Then you started to think a bit more clearly. The last thing you remembered was being at the bar. How the hell did you even get home, nevermind the curtain. When you turned someone else in the bed turned to and you sat up quickly screaming. Seungmin woke up immediately thinking something was wrong and quickly realized why you were screaming. When you realized it was Seungmin in your bed you stopped screaming but you weren’t any less upset or confused. Then all excitement and screaming caught up with you.
“Oh fuck move I’m gonna get sick!” You ran him over and to the bathroom, managing to make it to the toilet before puking. He sleepily walked in behind you rubbing his eyes. After you were done evacuating anything that was left in your stomach you sat back catching your breath. You looked up at Seungmin who was standing there waiting for you to be okay. You could at least somewhat process that you just woke up with Kim Seungmin in your bed now. You asked the first question that entered your mind.
“Did... uh... did we...” Seungmin shook his head no immediately
“Oh hell no!” You gave him a shitty look.
“Not like that! I mean you were drunk as fuck, I’d never, we’d never... you know, if you were that drunk.” You nodded softly, understanding what he meant.
“Well... I uh... I don’t really remember much of last night.” He nodded.
“I’m sure you don’t. I’ve never seen you like that before.” You were a little embarrassed.
“Seungmin... why are you here? Why are you being so nice to me?” He sighed heavily.
“Why don’t you wash up and I’ll explain everything over some toast and coffee.” You nodded agreeing.
“Okay, I’ll be quick.” He bowed and backed out, closing the door. After you showered and brushed your teeth thoroughly, you snuck off to your room and got dressed quickly. When you walked out you found Seungmin starting a pot of coffee. He stopped when he saw you.
“Sorry, I wasn’t sure where everything was.” You shook your head.
“No it’s fine I’ll make the toast. Do you still like honey on it?” Seungmin’s heart fluttered.
“You remember that? I haven’t had honey on my toast in I don’t know how long...”
“Oh okay I won-” He stopped you.
“No no! Please put some on.” You smiled a little and made the toast, drizzling a little honey on Seungmin’s and yours. You both sat at the kitchen table across from each other sipping coffee and eating your toast in silence. After a minute you couldn’t take it anymore.
“Seungmin...” He nodded; he knew.
“Okay yea so last night you text messaged me after you ran into Robby Hobbs.” That part started coming back to you.
“Oh my god yea! He’s Andy Cope!” Seungmin nodded.
“Yea I know, one of my baseball buddies had told me when we were kids but Robby had moved away already and I just forgot.” Then you remembered what Robby said he told Seungmin.
“Min... I... I didn’t write that note. Why on earth would you believe such a thing? You were my best friend. Why didn’t you just tell me?” Seungmin looked down at his cup of coffee. “ He shrugged
“It looked like your handwriting and it was easier for me to believe that at the time than it was to believe you cared about me. Robby threatened me also but after he left, I was just a hurt kid that took it out on the one person that meant the most to me. I’m sorry for everything I ever did to you y/n. I am.” You reached across the table and squeezed his hand.
“I’m sorry too. For not listening, for not giving you a chance to explain things. If I hadn’t been so pig headed...” Seungmin shook his head.
“I’d done a lot to make you say no, I understand.” His other hand came to rest on top of yours.
“Maybe we can start over?” Seungmin suggested and you smiled brightly.
“I would love that.” After coffee and toast Seungmin decided it was probably time for him to leave. You walked him to the door and just before he went to leave you kissed his cheek.
“Thank you for getting me home safely.” He nodded.
“Any time.” You spent the rest of the break from school getting to know each other again. You picked up where you’d left off like it had just been the day before. When break was over you traveled back to college together. School kept you both busy but you always made time for each other, whether that was a lunch, a dinner, coffee before class, you found time.
Tonight you had a k drama night. The plan was to binge as many episodes as possible of your favorite show. You were well into the fourth or fifth episode that night. You were tucked up under Seungmin’s arm your legs stretched out on the couch. You started looking up at him out of the corner of your eye, when he noticed he smiled and then looked down at you. You didn’t even care that you were caught staring, he was so beautiful and you loved him so much. He leaned down kissing you and you crawled up onto his lap, straddling him as you opened your mouth and deepened the kiss. Seungmin’s hands rested on your hips and yours were threaded through his hair as you made out, grinding against each other. You broke away panting, needing to take a breath. Seungmin pressed his forehead against yours as he caught his breath as well.
“Will you stay tonight?” He looked at you, his thumb tracing the apple of your cheek.
“You’re sure?” You nodded biting at your lips.
“I am. I want you to stay, please?” You pecked his lips once, twice, three times and he shook his head.
“Let’s go to bed baby.” You crawled off Seungmin’s lap and he clicked the tv off as you both walked towards your bedroom. You shut and locked your door and suddenly Seungmin was right behind you, arms wrapped around you, his face buried in your hair.
“Afraid your parents might catch us?” You giggled and shook your head as you spun around in his arms. He kissed you and you started to back him towards your bed. He pulled his shirt off and then yours and you both took in the other’s bare skin.
“Fuck you’re beautiful.” He managed to finally get out before crashing his lips into yours again. Seungmin crawled back on your bed and you climbed on top of him straddling his lap. You sat up and unhooked your bra tossing it aside. When Seungmin saw your bare breasts, his hands slid up your body to cup them and pinch your nipples. You let out a breathy little moan. You couldn’t take it anymore, you needed him. You got off him long enough to get your pants and panties off. You unbuttoned and pulled at his pants, he lifted his hips helping you get them and his underwear off. You climbed on top of him again and lined his tip up with your aching sex. The moan that came out of Seungmin as you slid down his cock was sinful. When he was fully inside you, you leaned over and kissed him then rolled your hips.
“You feel so good Minnie.” You whispered against his lips and he nodded taking a couple deep breaths.
“God so do you baby, you feel fucking amazing!” You sat up and braced yourself on Seungmin's chest. He gripped your hips again and you started riding him slowly.
“Yes just like that baby, so good.” You rolled your hips against his. Seungmin started rocking your hips back and fourth faster, your clit pressing and rubbing against his pubic muscle. Your legs started shaking, you could feel your orgasm building.
“S-Seungmin! I’m... I’m so c-close.” He moaned and kept you moving against him.
“Cum for me y/n! Let me see that pretty face you make when you lose yourself.” The combination of his cock being buried deep inside you and the stimulation to your clit sent you on a round trip to an oasis of pleasure. Your whole body felt like it was vibrating. When you came back down, you leaned down and kissed Seungmin, soft lips slotted against the others. Seungmin sat up with you still in his lap holding your face and devouring your lips.
“Bend over for me baby.” You crawled off of his lap, grabbed the headboard and bent over. Seungmin knelt behind you, gripped your ass and pushed his cock deep inside you again. He started a steady pace snapping his hips against your ass.
“Deeper Min deeper!” He wrapped his arms around you and pulled you up, your back flush with his chest. One hand gripping a breast and the other teasing your clit as he grinded into you deep and hard. Your arms reaching back and wrapping around his head, your hands tugging at his hair. You could feel the mercury rising again. Your sweaty bodies pressed together, gripping each other as you teetered towards mind shattering bliss.
“God you feel perfect, made for me beautiful, cum with me baby.” He thrusted deep inside you again and you went ridged, your back arching as you came again, hard.
“Yesyesyes oh god...” A soft moan left Seungmin as he wrapped his arms around you tightly and came deep inside you, you were still braced against the headboard, Seungmin resting against your body as his cock softened inside you. After a minute of catching your breath both of you laid down. You laid there with your head on Seungmin’s chest quietly basking in the body buzz after that amazing orgasm.
“Do you want to have kids?” Seungmin’s question came out of nowhere.
“I’m on the pill Minnie.” He realized how out of left field that must have seemed.
“No I mean like one day, do you want to have kids one day?” You thought about a little piece of you and Seungmin running around wreaking havoc.
“Yea I think I do.” He smiled and squeezed you tighter.
“Me too... but... well... how will we explain our story?” You smiled up at him and pushed his hair away from his face.
“Easy, we’ll tell them the truth...” Seungmin’s face scrunched up confused by what you meant.
“The truth?” You nodded, kissed his lips and hummed.
“MMhmm...that it turned out, the enemy of my enemy was my friend.”

Note: Just look at him all scrumptious 🥵
Warnings🛑: professor!andy, age gap(reader is in her 20s), physical violence(not from Andy or reader), allusions to smut
Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You woke up in a warm cocoon of Andy, his body completely covering yours. His head laid on your chest, legs tangled with yours, one arm wrapped under you and his other across you with his hand cupping your breast. You found one of your hands in his fluffy hair, the other holding his wrist of the hand on your breast.
You couldn’t help but smile, feeling the slight ache between your legs. After the first time he fucked you, it wasn’t long until he was waking you up with his head between your legs, you even worked up the courage to give him a blowjob.
It was safe to say you’d had a wild night with your Professor. Luckily, you only had his class and an evening one today, and since Andy’s class was in the middle of the day, you got to sleep in.
“You look even prettier in the morning.” Andy rumbled, his deep morning voice making you shiver.
“My hairs a mess Andy,” you huffed, his answer only being a chuckle and sweet kiss to your jaw.
“Beautiful,” he whispered, kissing behind your ear and down your neck.
Both your hands threaded through his hair, the soft strands begged you to keep hold as you tilted your head for him to travel with his kisses. You wanted his mouth on yours, so with a gentle tug of his hair, your brought his lips to to meet yours. He tasted good, even in the morning. Chad would never do this with you, he wasn’t the affectionate type. Andy showed you what you were missing.
“I have to go.” you whispered against his lips.
“I want to see you again baby.” Andy whispered back, his hand at your breast gave it a squeeze.
He smirked when you gasped, letting his thumb swipe over your sensitive nipple. You squirmed under him, biting down on your lip.
“I have a class to get to, the Professor frowns upon tardies.” it was your turn to smirk as his turned into a full smile.
“I’m sure he’d let it slide for a beautiful woman, one he knows how she tastes.” Andy said as he tugged at your now hardened nipple.
“Honey, we don’t have time. I-” you whined, but Andy was quick to interrupt.
“Come to my office after class.” he grinned, stopping his torture as you pouted.
“Fine, only because now you made me super horny.” you grumbled with a roll of your eyes.
“That was my plan.” Andy chuckled, it turned into a fully belly laugh when you playfully shoved him.
Tumblr media
You drove back to your apartment with a smile on your face and the ghost of Andy’s kiss on your lips. He certainly knew how to give a proper kiss goodbye. Your happiness didn’t last long however when you saw Chad standing in front of your door.
“You aren’t supposed to be here.” you said, clutching your keys tightly.
“Baby listen, I’m sorry about the past few days. I just…I had some stuff going on ok? I love you and want to make it all better.” Chad expressed with a fake look of sorrow.
You knew he wasn’t sorry, and you certainly weren’t taking him back.
“We’re done Chad, nothing you say or do will make me forgive what you did.” you hissed, pushing your way pass him and unlocking the door.
“Wait! Baby, please let’s talk!” he tried, but you quickly slammed the door in his face.
Chad proceeded to be more annoying as he followed you all the way to Andy’s class. You were supposed to meet Andy before class, but as your luck would have it, Chad made it impossible.
“I can help you! I can help you pass the class baby and we can spend days together! Just like old times!” he pleaded, grabbing your elbow as the two of you reached the door.
“I certainly don’t need your help since not only am I the top of Professor Barber’s class, but the top of my whole fucking class! Leave me the fuck alone!” you seethed, shoving him off of you just as Andy walked out of the classroom.
“Hey, everything alright?” Andy asked cautiously, but you didn’t give him an answer.
You definitely did not let Chad answer either as you stormed into the room. Andy looked at you, then back to Chad, arching a brow to which Chad scoffed at then stomped away. It was just you and Andy now, other students filling the room any minute now. You were getting out your things when you felt Andy’s presence, shifting your eyes up to him.
“What was that?” he questioned softly, you shrugged as your answer.
“Baby, do not fuckin’ lie to me.” he growled, hest coursing through you as you squirmed in your seat.
“Later Andy, someone might see us so go.” you mumbled, avoiding his eyes.
“I don’t give a flying fuck, tell me what’s wrong now.” he bit back, leaning into your desk with his hands at either side.
This was bad because now you could see his muscles bulging out along with the veins running up and down his arms. Not only that, but you could smell his scent that was absolutely intoxicating, reminding you of last night.
“Please,” you whispered, daringly brushing your pinky finger against the side of his hand.
Andy stared at your for a beat, then two before he gave a lift of his chin. Your stomach dropped when he turned and walked back to the front of the classroom, the tension of his muscles making it obvious he was angry.
After class, you didn’t go to Andy. The entire time he taught he wouldn’t dare look at you or even call on you to answer a question like normal. You figured it would be best to give him space to calm down, but another part of you wanted to crawl in his lap and ask him to hold you.
Andy💘: Why am I in my office without you?
Uh oh…
Babydoll❤️: Cuz you’re mad at me
Andy💘: Get your ass in here before I tan it tonight
Babydoll❤️: I need some time Andy
Andy💘: I think we need to have a chat and part of that will be between my hand and your ass
You couldn’t help the shiver of that message, he’d spanked you a few times the other night and you loved it. In a daze, you didn’t realize Chad had been walking behind you the whole time until he caught your wrist. He whirled you around to face him, a surprised squeal leaving your lips.
“How many fucking times do I have to tell you-!” you hissed, yanking on your arm.
“What is that on your neck?” Chad demanded, yanking you behind the building.
“No! Let go of me!” you yelled, unsuccessfully catching anyones attention since not a lot of people had evening classes.
“You fucking slut! You motherfucking bitch!” Chad roared, his hand seizing your jaw in a painful hold.
“Get off!” you gasped, panic flooding through your veins.
“Who was it?! Huh?! Tell me now!” he screamed, roughly shaking you.
Using all your strength, you fought back against him. Pushing and shoving while Chad shoved you against the wall painfully.
“Chad,” a deep voice, Andy, sounded through the alley.
“Stay out of this,” Chad angrily snapped.
“Should I get in contact with your father? Wouldn’t want another incident like a few years ago.” Andy raised his brow, your eyes widening as you looked from him to Chad.
“Fuck you Barber!” Chad spat, throwing your arm back with such force you stumbled back.
You and Andy watched him walk away, being certain he was gone.
“Office, now.” Andy growled, using every ounce of his control to not find and beat the shit out of Chad for touching what’s his.
“I-I want to go home.” you sniffled, staring at your feet while tears streamed down your cheeks.
Andy’s heart broke looking at your state, immediately rushing to gather you in his arms.
“N-No, Andy some-some-” you choked out, pressing your hands to his massive chest.
“Shhh baby, let me take you home. You’re safe now.” he whispered, laying a gentle kiss to your nose.
Tumblr media
Andy safely got you home, following you inside. You were extremely grateful, relieved that finally someone in your life cared about your safety. Andy had stopped at his place to change, bringing stuff for a few days because no way was he leaving you by yourself. Not his girl.
“Sweetheart, let me see your face.” Andy called to you softly.
“Andy, honey it’s fine.” you mumbled, setting your stuff down while your back was to him.
Andy knew your tactic however and gently pulled your back to his front, his strong arms capturing you in that familiar warmth from this morning. Your body seemed to have a mind of its own since it completely relaxed into Andy. His lips kissed your cheek, the scruff of his beard made you shiver.
“Please?” he asked with another kiss.
Reluctantly, sort of, you turned. Andy carefully tilted your head, checking for any bruising.
“You had anything to eat baby?” he questioned, your reply was the shake of your head.
“Let’s order some take out, I’ll call and you relax.” he said more of a statement than a suggestion.
“I don’t want to be alone.” you blurted, grasping his tshirt tighter.
“Alright baby, just stay here.” he murmured, kissing your head before pulling out his phone and wallet.
After dinner, Andy ran you a bath. He was incredibly sweet and gentle, even sitting outside the tub so he could take care of you. It was strange, you’d never had someone go out of the way like this for your well being. Your parents definitely didn’t give a shit and now you realized Chad didn’t either.
“Baby?” Andy called, his lips skimming your ear.
“Hmm?” you hummed, shivering slightly as Andy scrubbed your skin with the loofa.
“You wanna talk about what happened?” he asked, leaning his bristly cheek against your soft one.
“I-…things-we-he’s never-” you croaked, tears welling up again as you recalled the interaction.
“Has he ever harmed you like that before?” Andy forced himself to ask, clenching the loofa so tight his knuckles turned white.
You noticed, seeing and feeling the anger radiating from him. Leaning slightly against him, you picked up his hand, holding it to your chest.
“Not like that, he’s-that’s…we never got into any physical altercations.” you fibbed slightly.
“Baby, don’t fuckin’ lie to me.” he growled, dropping the loofa and moving his big hand to turn your chin.
You looked into his beautiful blue eyes, full of concern and anger. It was hard to resist, so you went for it as you leaned the rest of the way, kissing his lips slow and gentle. Andy’s thumb caressed your jaw, his tongue lightly tracing your lips. You tried to deepen the kiss, getting up to your knees in the bath tub and throwing your arms around his shoulders.
“Sweetheart,” Andy murmured against your lips.
“Less talking, more kissing.” you mumbled.
“Unh uh, tell me the truth.” Andy said as he pulled back.
“Andy, baby just kiss me.” you pleaded, whining slightly.
“Y/n,” he growled, his demanding energy shocked through you.
“He backed me up in a corner…the day before I came to your house.” you whispered, watching his eyes go from concerned and angry to enraged.
“I’ll kill him he ever steps fucking near you again.” Andy hissed.
“Andy no, don’t, he’s not worth it.” you tried to say assuringly, but he was so caught up in thoughts of all that Chad had done to hurt you.
“But you’re worth something to me…and I’m not going to stand by and watch that asshole hurt what’s mine.” he claimed, two places spasming at his words.
Once you got out of the bath, Andy dressed you in once of his tshirts and helped you into a pair of undies. Andy stripped to his boxers and climbed into bed with you, turning on some game you weren’t paying attention to. You snuggled up into his warmth, throwing your leg over his big thighs. The background of the tv and Andy’s fingers combing through your hair lulled you into a peaceful slumber.
Andy checked if you were sleeping, the bruising starting to become more prominent. He reached for his phone, making some calls to be sure that fucker never touched you again.

February 15th - 12:25am - Los Angeles, CA
Tumblr media
Wow. Just...wow.
You stare down at your phone as you wait for the bartender to bring you your check. While you had initially been prepared for Andy to be upset over your note, as well as your pretty abrupt departure, you certainly hadn't expected this.
If anything, he seemed almost...unbothered. By all of it. Granted, it was sometimes hard to gauge a person's tone via text. But you'd also been in a relationship with the man for the better part of six freaking months! At this point, one could argue that you were practically fluent in Andrew Barber and all of his fucking moods.
The guy was up to something, without a doubt. Which meant that you were now officially on high alert. Because your man - your ex - had never been the type to play fair.
Especially where you were concerned. You should've known that it was gonna take a hell of a lot more than a handwritten letter and a box of artisanal muffins to knock some sense into his stubborn ass.
"Argh! You are such a fucking ogre, Andrew!" You groan, burying your face in your hands. "Why can't you ever make things easy?"
The next time you look up it's to see the bartender returning with your credit card. She goes to hand it over, only for you to interrupt her mid-sentence.
What was her name again? You could've sworn it started with a "D".
"Sorry, I know I said I was ready to close out. But since men are stupid, I think I'm gonna need another margarita. Quite possibly two."
Delta gives you a sympathetic nod before pocketing your card once more. "You got it, sweetie. Still want sugar instead of salt?"
"Yes, please." You mumble, reminding yourself that it was okay to feel annoyed. Because you were. This was supposed to be your time, damn it. You deserved to take some space for yourself!
Even if it meant sitting alone at a hotel bar, missing the one person you loved more than anything, the day after motherfucking Valentine's Day. Cheers, bitches.
___
Two Weeks Later – Somewhere in Downtown Boston
Andrew Barber stares blankly at his computer screen, mindlessly tapping his index finger against his temple as a fresh wave of anger courses through his veins.
He’d been so good the last two weeks. So patient and understanding. He’d given you your space, just like you’d asked. Never intruding with the exception of the text he shot off that night.
Even when he’d come across your latest Instagram post from a few days ago showing off your apparent date with another man. Some pretentious looking fucker who went by Russell Cromwell. You two had looked real cozy while sharing a plate full of Birria tacos. And then you’d posed outside of the restaurant with your arms wrapped around his waist.
But the real kicker had been the last photo in the carousel. The one where you’d kissed him on the cheek – when you’d done the “knee thing” that actresses used to do in those old black and white movies you loved to watch so much.
Oh yeah. The two of you would be having a discussion about that one real soon. His wayward Baby Girl could count on that shit.
Honestly, you had no idea how hard falling back had been for him. It had been a real struggle. Because at his core, Andrew Barber was a man of action. He was well-known for his cunning and mental prowess. This was a man who had graduated at the top of his class, who had then gone on to become the youngest District Attorney in the city of Boston’s history.
And in times of crisis, he was someone you could count on to remain calm and collected while you worked towards a solution. Nothing could shake him, save for the trial and media circus that had briefly surrounded his late son.
After that particular tragedy, Andy had resigned himself to being alone. Forever. He often tried to convince himself that he preferred it that way. Andrew Barber didn’t do love. Not after what happened with his ex-wife, Laurie. He was better off living a life of no commitment.
Even if it meant a lot of lonely nights filled with a seemingly endless revolving door of meaningless one-night stands.
And then he’d met you.
Yes, you.
The woman who had somehow, against all odds, brought magic back into his life. Your laugh, your smile, your very presence – it colored his whole goddamn world. He told you that all of the time, and yet it was almost as if you didn’t believe him.
At first, he was convinced that you were too good to be true. Although he’d been quickly dispelled of that notion when you’d had the balls to walk out on him during your very first date. It’s quite possible that he’d fallen for you right then – because you were the type of woman who knew her worth.
By then, Andy had become convinced that you were a gift from the universe. The way he saw it, after everything he’d been through, he was owed you. You were the woman of his dreams – his very salvation – all wrapped up in a curvy little package. And when you ran that night, it called to the primal part of him that felt compelled to give chase.
Just like now.
But what you had yet to understand was that, once a man like Andrew Barber had deemed you his forever, there was no going back. There was no letting you go. No means of escape.
At most, he’d been granted you a temporary reprieve. You both needed time to assess the situation, survey the damage, and then calculate your next move.
And sweetness, you’d already played your hand when you’d left that little note skipped town under the pretense of taking a fucking business trip.
Fine. Now it was on him. And while you still held most of the cards, that certainly didn’t mean that Andrew Barber was walking around without an ace or two in his back pocket. And you had better believe that he was more than ready to play his own.
But first…he needed some fucking coffee. And lucky for him, he knew just where he could find the perfect cup – shot of chocolate, dash of cinnamon, hold the whip.
___
Forty Minutes Later – Monarch Media Group (20 Minutes Outside Downtown Boston)
You lean back in your chair and rub your tired eyes. For the life of you, you simply couldn’t seem to focus today. Or any other day for the matter.
Even though it had been almost a week since you’d returned from your trip to L.A., you still felt just as conflicted about things with Andrew Barber as you did before you’d left. And not only that, but you also found yourself feeling on edge about the entire situation.
Because after your brief text exchange the morning of February 15th, he’d left you alone. The most impatient man you’d ever encountered this side of Boston had actually found it within himself to respect your wishes.
No calls. No texts. No emails. Not even so much as a fucking smoke signal.
And while part of you was pleased with that particular development, there was no denying the fact that you missed your Big Man.
You could be woman enough to admit it. You missed the hell out the handsome, grumpy-faced district attorney who, up until recently, had been a major mainstay in your life. But after some serious soul searching and a generous amount of tequila, you’d come to the conclusion that it was important for you to get your mind right before moving forward with anything.
You owed it to yourself to figure out who you were outside of your relationship with Andy – needed it even. Because that man was a force to be reckoned with. He could be so dominant sometimes, his personality so completely all-consuming that it was easy to lose yourself in him.
To allow yourself to become so entirely eclipsed by his brilliant shadow. Which is something that could absolutely happen the moment you stopped paying attention to your own wants, and needs, and desires.
And if that ever were to happen, part of you wondered whether or not you would be able to find your way back. Honestly, you had no idea.
Because after all of this, if you chose to be with him…it would mean that you were all-in. There was no other option with him.
That beautifully stubborn man didn’t have a lower setting.
However, the last thing you’d ever expected was for Mr. Andrew “My Way or the Highway” Barber to go quietly into that good night. Well, suppose you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Because if anything he could very well be planning–
Your inner musings are interrupted by Anya, your favorite receptionist at Monarch Media Group. Granted, she was also the only receptionist at the company you’d worked for over the last several years, but that was neither here nor there.
Anya gives you a knowing look before taking a seat on the edge of your desk. “Hi, friend.” She lightly pokes your shoulder. “How ya doin?”
“I’m okay.” You blow out a breath and then decide to exit out of your Outlook. “What’s up?”
“Oh…nothing much.” You watch as your friend and coworker helps herself to a piece of chocolate sitting in a nearby dish.
“Okay.”
“I just stopped by to tell you that your coffee has arrived.” She dutifully unwraps it before popping it in her mouth.
“What?”
You hadn’t ordered any coffee. You didn’t usually even drink the stuff this late in the day. Unless…
“Yep. And just so happens, it was hand-delivered by the handsomest door-dasher I ever did see.” Anya pokes your shoulder again. “I would’ve accepted it on your behalf, but the guy insists on giving it to you himself. Probably angling for a tip if you ask me.” She throws you a conspiratorial wink for good measure.
Speak of the devil. Hello, Mr. Andrew “Check Out My Shit Timing” Barber.
“Ugh.” You bury your head in your hands to muffle your cry of frustration. “Can you please just tell him I’m not here?”
“I’m afraid I already let that cat out of the bag. But by the look on your face and the way you’re rocking back and forth like a human pinball, I take it I shouldn’t have done that.”
“No!”
“Did you and Andy like…break up…or something?” Anya pauses as she reaches for another piece of candy, her hand hovering in mid-air.
No, Anya. I always feel like jumping out the nearest window. I’m fucking squirrley like that.
“Yes. No. I don’t know.” You wail. “It’s just…it’s just really fucking complicated, okay?”
“Gotcha. So…about the coffee…”
“I’m going. I’m going.” You stand up in a huff, wishing you knew where you put the ponytail holder that had been on your wrist just this morning. “But if he pisses me off, I’m dumping that shit on his shoes. Hot or not. I do not care.”
“Okay, but if it comes to that can you please try to do it off company property? I’m all for you handling your business, but I’m also thinking about all the paperwork I’m gonna have to do if you accidentally injure one of the city’s hottest attorneys.”
“Fuck you.” You grumble as you stalk towards the front of the office to confront the annoying asshole who also happened to be the love of your life.
“What can I say? I’m a selfish bitch.” She chirps, blowing you a kiss.
“Your words not mine. And stay the hell out of my chocolate, you mooch!” You call out as you turn the corner, fully intending to give the Boston D.A. a piece of your mind before you politely, and very firmly, shoved him out the door.
Because if that man thought that he could just waltz right into your place of business and act like he owned everything and everyone, then he was sorely mistaken. You were going to prove to him, and whoever the hell’s job it was to oversee this whole godforsaken cosmos, that you knew how to stand your ground.
The sight of him standing right there in the lobby is easily enough to temporarily rob you of all reasonable thought. His back is to you, giving you the brief opportunity to give him a thorough once-over. His tailored white dress shirt is rolled up at the sleeves, exposing his brawny forearms. But what really draws your attention are his slate gray slacks, which only serves to highlight his perfectly sculpted backside.
He looked good. Nobody deserved to look that damned good, least of all your ex-boyfriend.
Wait. Is that – is that what he was now? Is…is that how all of this worked? Fuck!
You note the lack of tension in his broad shoulders. All things considered, he seemed pretty relaxed. But the real question was…how long could it be expected to last?
Andy picks that moment to turn around, his bright blue eyes locking with your own as an eager grin slowly spreads its way across his handsome features. You take a steadying breath and choose to ignore it.
“Andrew.” You exhale, trying your best to appear unaffected by his presence. It was a lie, of course. But if you managed to keep this unexpected interaction short and sweet, you just might be able to pull it off. “Wh–what are you doing here?”
“Hi.” He cocks his head to the side as he drinks you in, almost as if he’s amused by your disgruntled demeanor.
“Hello.” You cross your arms over your chest, wishing that you had chosen to wear a different sweater today. Andy loved you in this color, especially because of how it paired with your particular skin tone.
“Happy Wednesday, baby.”
God, he really needed to lose that stupid smile. Otherwise, how on earth were you supposed to maintain your composure?
“Sure.”
“Brought you something.” Andy holds out one of the cups of coffee he’s carrying. “Figured you might be able to use a little pick-me-up.”
“Thanks, but I’m good.” You tell him with a shake of your head.
“What? Since when?” He rears back before offering up a playful pout. “We always get coffee together on Wednesdays. It’s our thing…our little afternoon delight.” This time you’re treated to a wink.
“Shh!” You hiss, bridging the distance between your bodies to slap a hand across his mouth. “Don’t say that!”
The last thing you needed was someone to overhear that and think you two used to sneak away sometimes in the afternoon to…to well…you know. Some of the people you worked with possessed very vivid imaginations.
And besides, that whole afternoon delight business had only happened once or twice. Okay, quite possibly four and a half times – and then one more after that.
Amusement sparkles in his gaze as he stares you down. And then you feel the faint flick of his tongue brush across your palm. When you don’t react he does it again, this time following it up with an exaggerated groan.
You immediately jerk your hand away as if you’ve just been burned. Knowing that things were only bound to get worse, you snatch one of the coffees before grabbing his arm and dragging him outside and into the unseasonably warm weather.
Thank goodness for small favors.
The smell of spring was definitely in the air these days, but all you can focus on is the sound of Andy’s laughter trailing behind you. Frankly, it’s enough to set your teeth on edge. Even still, he allows you to lead him down the street. At some point there’s a slight shift that results in your relinquishing his arm so that he can lace his fingers through yours.
But you'll allow it if it means that he’ll behave for as long as it takes to make it to your destination. Which just so happens to be an empty bench located at the edge of a nearby park.
To his credit, the attractive buttface at your side doesn’t say anything during your impromptu power walk, but he also doesn’t need to. Because after two long weeks without you, the man was probably venturing into serious touch-starved territory.
You knew it. And so did he. So part of you didn’t see the harm in giving him this one, small thing.
Relief fills you when you finally reach the bench. Of course Andy sits first before pulling you down with him – but thankfully not onto his lap. Although you’re positive that the thought was there.
Eventually he lets go of your hand. Unsure of what else to do, you finally take a sip of your coffee. The rich, slightly bitter flavor of chocolate and mocha bursts onto your tongue, followed immediately by a quick hint of cinnamon.
Mm. A perfect cup.
“I’ve missed you, baby girl.” Andy’s large, lightly calloused hand cups your face – the roughened pad of his thumb caressing the curve of your cheek. “It hasn’t been a very fun couple of weeks.”
“I know.” You whisper as you lean into his touch and your eyes flutter closed. Perhaps you were just as starved for affection as he was. “I’m sorry.”
“Did you miss me?” His tone is gruff, but there’s no mistaking the emotion behind his words. Or the pain in his eyes for that matter.
“I did, Andy.” So much.
“But you still left. Tried to break up with me before hopping on a plane and running off all the way to L.A. to share some chips and queso with good ol’ Rusty.” Your eyes fly open as Andy’s hand drops away. “Or did I read that wrong?”
How the fuck had he known where you where? You hadn’t included anything about your intended destination in your letter…
“I saw it on your Instagram, in case you were wondering. Was actually able to use that stupid account you set up for me after all.” His teeth sink into his bottom lip as he narrows his gaze, trying to read your expression. “Couldn’t really get much else, although I enjoyed those pics of you at the beach.”
“It was a work trip.” You remind him, suddenly feeling defensive. “And Russell is an old friend, nothing more.”
“Hm.” Andy quirks an annoyed brow. “Are we talking about the kind of friend who also  accompanies you to the beach so you can show off your brand new bikini? Not that I’m complaining any about that gorgeous, sunkissed glow you’ve got going on, princess.”
His big body is certainly tense, but there’s no ignoring the feral gleam in his eyes. Almost as if he’s dying to undress you and spend the next several hours checking you for tan lines.
And he would, too. It’s not like it would be the first time.
“I went alone. Russell stayed behind for that one.” You roll your eyes at the sight of his nostrils flaring. “Jesus Christ, dude! I know you may not believe that I’m a big girl, but I am. And if I wanna go hang out at the beach by myself, then that’s exactly what I’m gonna do!”
Which was exactly what the fuck you’d done. And it had been positively marvelous.
“Fine.” He grunts, raising his palm towards the heavens. “God forgive me for having the sense to worry about my girl, especially since the last time I checked, she still couldn’t swim for shit.”
“Whatever, Andrew. This girl does whatever the hell she wants now, so you had better get used to it.” Your mouth is set in a thin, firm line while you silently dare him to disagree.
“I’m not quite sure how that’s different from any other day with you, but alright.” Andy tries to calm himself by playing with a stray curl that’s fallen free from your bun. “You’re still mine, sweetness. Even when you insist on being a brat. Or did you somehow forget that part?”
You swat at his hand instead of responding, hating that steady feeling of warmth that was currently pooling in your belly.
“Did you?”
You make a show of ignoring him in favor of enjoying what was left of your coffee.
“You know, they say that sometimes silence speaks louder than words, baby girl.” You find yourself resisting the urge to clench your thighs together at the sound of the dark chuckle that rumbles through his chest. “It’s alright, though. Guess I’ll just have to remind you again once we get past this little wall you’re trying to put up between us.”
He gifts you with a flash of his pearly white teeth. Andrew Barber was the type of man who would only let you get away with so much before he put his foot down. And you would do well to remember that.
“Pretty sure you meant to say “actions”, jackass.” Apparently he finds your acerbic wit funny as well.
“Eh, I’ve heard it both ways.” Andy shrugs before going back to toying with your curls. “But I think you should know that I’m not very happy with you, baby. And I’m trying to be patient here, but it’s kinda difficult when I can’t even get you to talk to me.”
“I was going to call you…” That wasn’t a lie. You had just been trying to drum up the mental fortitude you knew it would take to pick up the phone and actually dial his number. Sometimes, dealing with Andrew Barber could require some serious patience.
“Were you now?” He doesn’t believe you. You can hear it in his voice.
“I was.”
“Okay, then have dinner with me tonight.” He releases your curl, watching the way it bounces as it springs free.
“Andy.” You let out an exhausted sigh.
“Meet me at my place. I’ll swing by Imperial Wok and pick up a few of your favorites so we can eat. And then we can talk in a quiet, private setting without any interruptions. How does that sound, princess?”
“Wonderful.” The word slips out before you can catch it. “But I–I can’t.”
Andrew Barber’s excited smile dies on his lips the moment that phrase reaches his ears and registers in his brain. As much as you hated to admit it, being alone with this man wasn’t a very good idea right now – especially behind closed doors.
Because while you’d never seen the man in court, you’d definitely heard plenty of stories about his ruthlessness. And you knew firsthand just how persistent he could be when he was determined to get his way.
When Andy wanted something, he didn’t stop until he got it. Not only was he relentless, but he also wasn’t above using every tool at his disposal – including sex – if it meant having you back in his life. It wouldn’t matter all that much to him how it came about.
The same way he wouldn’t care if whether or not your desired reconciliation only happened because he’d lured you into his bed before fucking you back into submission.
“The fu–why the hell not?” He growls, his hand grips the arm of the wooden bench so hard his knuckles go white.
“Because I can’t.”
“Can’t or won’t?” The pronounced tick in his jaw makes it clear that he’s beyond frustrated by your refusal.
Unfortunately, that was too damned bad! By the time this was all said and done, your handsome ogre was going to have mastered the art of having some goddamned patience. At least you hoped that would be the case…
“Both.” You offer your Big Man a small apologetic smile as you rise from your seat. “Let’s plan for sometime next week. Maybe we can shoot for Monday. I’ll, uh, send you a text or something and we can find a place to meet. But I really need to get back to work now.”
Andy stares at you for what feels like a full minute as his impressive brain works overtime to figure out his next move. And then he stands up before taking your empty cup and discarding them both in a nearby trash bin.
“Alright.” He mutters with a nod in your direction. “I guess I’ll just have to wait for your message then. Now, let’s get you back to your office.” A lump forms in your throat when he wraps a muscled arm around your shoulders as you two begin walking back the way you came.
Fuck, you really hated this shit. But if this relationship was ever going to have a chance of working, you had to continue standing your ground. Even though it hurt like hell.
“I, um...I know you said that we probably won’t be able to sit down and talk until next week. And I suppose I can understand where you’re coming from with that, but while I have you now…” He lightly coughs into his elbow.
You glance up at your hotshot attorney, trying to figure out where he was going with this so that you could potentially cut him off at the pass.
“I at least wanted to say “thank you” in person for still agreeing to help Lydia with the charity gala this Saturday. I’m sure that it wasn’t an easy decision for you, especially given how things have been between us lately. But I really do appreciate it. And, frankly, I’m sure the kids at St. Augustine’s do too.”
You feel the blood drain from your face as the reminder of this weekend’s event all-but smacks in the face. “Shit!” You hiss, pulling away from Andy as you reach your building. “It’s this Saturday? Are you sure?”
 “I am.” He confirms, his eyes filled with surprise. “I just spoke with Lydia yesterday when I–”
“Fuck!” You exclaim as your hands fly to your hips, uncaring that you just interrupted whatever it was he was about to say.
In all of the chaos, you’d completely forgotten that you had agreed to help the wife of one of Andy’s colleagues with her annual charity ball. Starting by arriving at the hotel early Saturday morning to aid in the event setup, before heading up to your room to get ready for the evening's festivities.
A room that had been booked during a time when you and Andy were on much better terms.
“She did mention that she sent all of the volunteers an email a couple days ago with a list of instructions. Maybe it got buried in your inbox, baby.” He rests his hands on your biceps, giving you a reassuring squeeze. “But she is definitely expecting you and I’m afraid it’s probably too late for you to back out at this point.”
Deep down you knew he was right. And quite honestly, you wouldn’t even dream of doing something like this close to the actual date of the gala. But there was still the issue of having to share a hotel room with your ex.
Closing your eyes, you force yourself to take a deep breath. “I–I wouldn’t do that. I’m not that big of an asshole. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for us to share a room…” You trail off, hoping that he would at least be somewhat understanding of your current plight.
“Ahh.” You can see the moment when realization finally dawns. “Right. Almost forgot about that.”
No, he actually hadn’t. But since Andy didn’t feel as though there was any real need for you to know that, he was going to keep that particular tidbit to himself. Even he was capable of showing some restraint every now and again.
“Like I said…” You find yourself anxiously bouncing on your toes. “I don’t think –”
“I get it, sweetheart.”
Wait. He did? Just like that?
“You do?”
“I do.” His words are accompanied by a lopsided grin.
He didn’t. But then again, you didn’t need to know that either.
Andy’s hands leave your arms so that he can tenderly cup the sides of your face instead. “You just leave it all to me, baby girl. I’ll call the hotel and change the reservations.”
“You will?” You place your smaller hands overtop of his own. “You…you don’t mind?”
“Not at all.” Andy leans down to press a sweet kiss to your forehead. “And I promise to be on my best behavior Saturday night.” He gives you another kiss, which you allow. “If you want, I’ll even send over the updated confirmation info.”
“Thank you.” You murmur, wishing that you could give-in just a little more and offer up your lips for a kiss. A real one this time.
But you couldn’t afford to do that. Not even when Mr. Andrew “Give Me A Gold Star For Being Helpful” Barber was acting sweet. That would only throw everything off balance all over again.
Andy’s heated gaze drops to your mouth before he slowly pulls away. “Don’t work too hard, okay?” His husky voice sends one last tiny flutter through your belly.
“Same goes for you.” You tell him as you begin to head into the building.
“Goodbye, baby girl.”
“Goodbye, Andrew. See you Saturday.”
He waits until you’re safely inside and out of sight before turning on his heel and proceeding in the direction of his car. Oh, you’d be seeing him on Saturday alright. And he would be on his best behavior – depending on just how much patience he could muster.
You two would be sorting this shit out then, whether you liked it or not. When it was over, you’d both spend the rest of the weekend making up for lost time. And Andrew was going to do everything in his power to ensure you enjoyed every fucking second of it. Just like he planned to enjoy getting reacquainted with that delicate sweetness between those luscious thighs. But first…
He needed to go make a call.

Most days, you're a good teacher. A teacher that students want to eat lunch with or inadvertently include in their silly TikToks. Most days, you're patient and kind and only have to raise your voice a handful of times, if only to be heard over the blanket volume level of teenage conversation. Today is not one of those days. "Guys!" You yell, pausing the music on your computer and turning to look at your class, obviously annoyed. "We're supposed to be talking about Picasso. I don't know why I'm hearing so much conversation about lunch." It's a lie. There was a fight between two students at lunch. It'd also been the topic of conversation in the teacher's lounge, but still.
"Miss, we already talked about Picasso!" One of your kids bemoans, and you raise your eyebrows at them.
"So, if I asked you right now, you could tell me what historical event his painting Guernica is supposed to depict?" You ask. The entire class goes silent as you wait for a response that never comes, and you sigh. "Please, do your work."
The day started with getting yet another email from another gallery, this time from down south, telling you they loved your work but not enough to showcase or buy it. Then, a text from your manager letting you know that paychecks will be late because of technical issues with the system, even though you're already beyond broke. Then, a sad text from Andie about how she's feeling homesick and misses you and wishes you could get on a plane to come see her. Then, to top it all off, an email from your ex, Henry, popped up the second you pulled into the school.
Hey, long time, no talk! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to reach out and let you know I've got an exhibition going up later next week and wanted to invite you to the opening. It's about-
You didn't read any further, anger and a wave of past emotions drowning you before you could. You and Henry were together all throughout college. You met during a freshman art class and were inseparable after that. He was tall, sensitive, and had a penchant for listening to country music when he worked, leading to many delirious nights spent crooning to Emmy-Lou Harris together. He surprised you with new paint and spontaneous trips to scenic parts of Texas to fuel your inspiration. You were happy for a long time. You even thought you'd marry him at one point. He wanted to be the next young, groundbreaking artist, making you his muse, no matter how many times you tried to assure him you were also an artist. Your work would go up in galleries and exhibitions, and everyone in your small program would gossip about the two of you. "He's so talented. It's insane," you heard one of your classmates say once. "And she's so beautiful."
The compliment dug under your skin and stayed there as your relationship failed. You didn't want to be a muse anymore. You stopped letting him paint you in various states of undress and started asking for more alone time to work on your own stuff. You went from being the perfect, polished doll he could position however he wanted and started living in your paint-stained jeans and old, ratty shirt. You started arguing more and more, first about little things like why he left his paint water cups everywhere, and then about big things like your decision to pursue teaching and the "inspiration" he found in an impressionable freshman. He suddenly moved out after graduation without a word, leaving you to nurse your wounds in a half-empty apartment for the rest of your lease, and you hadn't heard from him until this morning.
There's something more than the sting of hearing from him all these years later that bothers you. You're a high school art teacher struggling to make ends meet, and he's doing exactly what he set out to do. He's getting his work in front of his eyes and receiving praise for it. "Why do you wanna be a teacher when you can just be an artist?" He asked you one morning as you studied for your certification exams. "Or, at least, an artist's wife."
"And what if I'm not good at that?" You asked. "Then what? I'm just supposed to be your muse for the rest of my life? Have kids to fuel someone else's inspiration and have no time for my own work? Wither away while you go on to make art and give talks and become a cynic? Fuck that."
You stand by what you said, even all these years later, but there is an irony in that, even as a teacher, you don't have time to do your own work. Still, fuck that. The bell rings and signals the end of another class, and you quickly stand as students start packing up their stuff. "Okay, guys. Remember, your art history essay is due in two weeks! I'm excited to read all about everything you've learned since we started this unit. I love you, and please make good choices." You announce, hoping that at least some of them are listening to you, as they spill out of the classroom and the next students stream in. Ellie's sweet face is a welcome reprieve when she walks in.
"Hey Bellie! How's your day going, kiddo?" You ask, and she smiles. You'll swear up and down all day that you don't have favorite students, but if you did, Ellie would be one of them.
"Good. I have my signed permission slip for the art club field trip." She says. After your experience with Joel outside the bar, you couldn't sleep and knocked out all the field trip paperwork before falling asleep on your couch. But you weren't safe from his lips and broad shoulders, even in your subconscious.
"Oh, my hero! I've been meaning to remind everyone about those. Thanks for getting that in so quickly." You say as she hands the paper to you, Joel's scribbly signature at the bottom. Somehow, you're not surprised that the box indicating he wants to be a chaperone is ticked. "Perfect. Your dad knows when the field trip is?"
"Yeah. He wrote it down on his calendar and everything." She says, rolling her eyes fondly, and you laugh.
"Well, good, because I'm gonna need all the help I can get when I'm dealing with you guys."
"Hey!" She feigns offense as the bell rings, signaling the end of the passing period, and the last of your students comes running in. Ellie takes her seat near the front, and you grab your silly, colorful pointer to talk about Guernica, which is still proudly displayed on the board. After a quick art history lesson, you release them to work on the projects they've been working on for a week now. They still have a few more days before it's due, so more than half of them are slacking off quietly, which you're fine with. As long as you get a finished assignment at the end, they can do whatever they want.
You play quiet music as they work to help them focus and answer some emails. One email that catches your attention is from the parent of one of your students, Dalton, who's an amazing football player but is less than passionate about art, to say the least. You emailed his dad to let him know he was missing some assignments and could still turn them in late for only a slight penalty, but if he turns in nothing at all, you'll have no choice but to fail him. You also CC'd the football coach so he'd know the academic standing of one of his star players. Needless to say, you've been subject to a few not-so-nice emails from all parties involved.
Once you're done firing off another round of emails, you decide to step away from your computer so you don't have to see the next reply until absolutely necessary. Walking around the room to answer questions, give opinions, or just hear what's happening in students' lives always makes you feel better. In one period, you helped a handful of students put the finishing touches on their projects, heard the latest gossip, and talked one of your girls out of sending a nasty text to the boy who just broke her heart. And they say teachers aren't important.
The second you get a little bit of peace during your planning period, your phone buzzes with a notification. Given all the notifications and messages you've received today, you're hesitant to even pull it out of your pocket. But curiosity wins, and you open your phone to find a text from an unsaved number.
Is there anything I should bring to the field trip? Snacks, gum, alcohol?
You laugh to yourself and start typing a message back.
Alcohol won't be necessary, but it might be good to bring some lunch and a few snacks. I think we're gonna try to have a picnic or something at the museum.
Yes, ma'am.
You still feeling up to chaperone? Teenagers are no joke.
Do I need to remind you that I've raised two? I think I can handle a few more.
Oh, I can't wait to see this.
It can't be that hard, right?
On the day of the field trip, it turns out to be that hard. The only adults accompanying twenty teenagers to the museum are you and Joel. They're excited to be out of school and doing something new, but you can feel your migraine starting before you even get on the bus. Thankfully, the ride to the museum (and the traffic) calms them down, and they're more manageable by the time you arrive. A curator meets you outside the front doors and begins by walking your group through the outdoor sculptures, giving a little bit of history of the museum and the pieces themselves. The kids ask insightful questions and take turns snapping photos or even sketching a rough outline of the piece before moving on to the next. You stay at the front of the group while Joel manages the middle and back, silencing kids with a stern look. You fight a smile when you catch him and Ellie lingering at a sculpture, whispering to each other before he urges her forward and takes a sweet picture of her smiling in front of it.
After the initial walk of the grounds, you stop to have lunch in a sunny garden and listen to the kids gush about their favorite part so far and what paintings they're most excited to see inside.
"Miss, what's your favorite thing here?" Kayla asks.
"I like Dream Village by Chagall. If you find it before me, you'll have to let me know." You say. "Do you have a favorite?"
"Not yet. Maybe I'll find it today." Kayla says.
"I like that attitude!"
"Kissass." Jacob coughs, and you both give him a look. You can feel Joel's eyes burning a hole in the back of your head as you stare at Jacob.
"What's my policy?"
"Are you really gonna make me say it?"
"Yep." You say, and he sighs.
"You can be anything you want to be, but you're not allowed to be a dick." He mumbles.
"Exactly. So, please, be nice," you say as you fish around in your lunch box for something. "Here, have a cookie. It might help make you feel a little better." He mutters a little thanks and unwraps it, already in a better mood after one bite, and you smile.
"You just carry around cookies, waiting for a kid to be in a bad mood?" Joel asks, and you turn to look at him. He's wearing a plain blue t-shirt and jeans with sunglasses sitting atop his head, but you think it might be your favorite thing he's worn in your presence. You like it when he wears color.
"It was my cookie, but he needs it more than I do," you shrug. "Besides, things like that are a great morale booster. It's hard to be grumpy when you've got something sweet."
"I'm inclined to agree with you." He quips a little too smoothly, his eyes flicking across your face and down to your lips, and you feel your cheeks getting hot. Thankfully, all the kids have returned to their own conversations and couldn't care less about what the Adults are talking about.
"You're relentless." You whisper.
"Do you want me to stop?" He whispers back, and you sigh. If you were a stronger or better person, you might be able to think fast enough to come up with a response, but you're not. So, you just look at him and rack your brain for something to say but come up empty. "That's what I thought." He smiles and offers you his sweating Dr. Pepper can as a peace offering. You roll your eyes at his smug look but take a sip anyway.
Once everyone is done eating, you all stand and make your way into the museum lobby, the kids already chattering about what they want to see.
"Okay, you guys are free to roam but please, please, please remember that you're representing not only the school but also me. Be respectful and kind, and please don't act like you've never been in public before, okay? Go, be free." You say before the kids split off into their little groups with their obligatory activity in hand. Ellie stays near Joel, only a little shy, until Kayla turns around suddenly and waves her on.
"Ellie, c'mon!" She says. Ellie takes a few steps in her direction before turning to look back at Joel.
"Go. I'll be okay." He says.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Now go. Have fun." She doesn't need any more encouragement after that and skitters off with the rest of the kids, leaving you and Joel alone in the atrium.
"She's doing really well." You tell him even though he can clearly see for himself.
"Thanks to you."
"All I did was give her a push."
"Take the credit. You deserve it." He says, his lips pulling into that award-winning smile.
You fall into silence as you walk through the different galleries, Joel never too far behind you. Sometimes, he'll start at the opposite end of the room and work his way down until you meet in the middle, making a deliberate effort to bump your shoulder or hand as he passes. Other times, he'll stay right next to you, and, for some reason, it doesn't bother you. You like being so close to him and feeling his eyes work over the piece like it's a puzzle he doesn't quite know how to work. When he can't stand the quiet anymore, he'll whisper a question to you about the artist or the history, his breathing fanning out across your neck and making the hair there stand on end.
After moving through a big part of the museum together, you and Joel end up at the same painting as the dull hum of voices fills the space between you. You smile to yourself, practically hearing him trying to find something to say as he stands there and observes how the lines of bright colors follow each other. Some are stark and almost resemble lightning in how they move around the canvas, but others are muted, blended together with careful precision and patience. It's hard to imagine what West Texas could've been like in 1953, but this makes it a little easier.
"What's this one supposed to mean?" Joel mumbles, leaning ever so conspicuously into you.
"I can't tell you." You mumble back, and he finally turns to look at you head-on. You meet his eyes with an amused smile, and he shakes his head at you.
"You're really not gonna tell me?"
"I can't tell you what art is supposed to mean to you. I can't tell anyone that."
"But, you're a teacher."
"If you're asking me for an art history lesson, I'd be happy to help, but that's about all I can do for you."
"'S cruel and unusual punishment."
"If art and culture are cruel and unusual punishment, why'd you sign up to chaperone?"
"Maybe I wanted to see my friend," he says, bumping you with his shoulder, and you laugh a little too hard. "What? We can't be friends? Is there a school policy against that, too?"
"Nope, no school policy. I just," You pause and revel in how enraptured he looks at every movement, pause, and breath you take. "I already have friends, so..."
"Oh, and you're 'fraid of bein' too popular?"
"Famously." You say, and he chuckles next to you. You go back to staring at the painting quietly with him so close you can feel his body heat. You're the one to break this time, knocking him with your shoulder to get his attention again. You didn't need to. When you glance at him, you see his focus is on you, not the painting. "It's Texas. Canyon, to be more precise. Up by Amarillo where there's nothing but cattle and desert. O'Keeffe taught out there for a few years and wanted to paint something that showed how big the West is. It's supposed to make you feel like you're two feet tall and seeing the sky for the first time. For her, it might've been the first time in a long time she'd gotten to see a sunset that big. So, she painted it so other people could enjoy sunsets like that. It's like a love letter."
"How d'you do that?" He asks once you're finished explaining, and you furrow your eyebrows.
"Do what?"
"Make little things seem so beautiful." He answers easily, like you asked him what color the sky is. You don't know what to say. What are you supposed to say to something like that?
"'S just what art does." You shrug and break away from his gaze to look at the painting, if only to not feel him staring into your soul.
"No, it's what you do to it. 'S why those kids love you so damn much. You make everythin' feel like a masterpiece, even the little things." He's not flirting. He's not trying to persuade you to do one thing over another. He's genuine and heartfelt. You swear you would start crying if you had a little less sleep. You take a deep breath and lean into him for half a second, just enough to feel his body against yours, before standing upright again.
"Thank you."
"It's what friends are for," he says, leaning into you in return. "I should make sure they haven't seized the museum or anythin'."
"Oh, I can do it. You're a guest."
"And you work too hard," he stops you. "Take a break and enjoy what you love. The world won't end if you take some time for yourself." If ever there were awards to be given out for sweet talking, you think Joel Miller would win all of them.
"Okay," you say, and he walks behind you to move on to the next section. "You really wanna be my friend?" You ask before he can fully pass behind you, looking at him over your shoulder. He smiles devastatingly, light sparkling in his eyes, and nods.
"I really wanna be your friend." He says softly, his voice low and rumbling in his chest. He lingers for a second or two before finally making his way to the group of students, leaving you to scrutinize the painting you've been staring at for God knows how long.
The day crawls to an uneventful close, with you forcing all the students to take a picture in front of the museum for the yearbook. Joel takes your phone out of your hand and all but pushes you in the photo, and your students lovingly welcome you into their little group. In exchange, you grab Joel's phone and take cute pictures of him and Ellie for their own memories. They smile almost identically, and Ellie makes a fake annoyed face when Joel kisses her temple. Your fingers brush against each other when you hand it back, and for a second, you can feel the callouses from his job. It feels like unlocking a new piece of him or a new quirk.
Too bad this isn't a date. Too bad nothing can ever come of this. Too bad you had to meet this way. Too bad. Too bad.
The ride home is quiet and full of the clinking of backpacks and new souvenirs. When you get to the school, parents are waiting in the parking lot with fast food dinners and excited ears to hear all about their days. Almost everyone immediately slinks home, tired and happy, before you can even get close to the school doors. Almost everyone. Joel and Ellie help you carry your backpack and some things you bought for teaching purposes at the museum into your classroom. The school is virtually deserted, and you return to your room to find all the lamps flipped off and mostly positive notes from the sub.
"Dad, what are we gonna do for dinner?" Ellie groans as you sit in your chair and open your email quickly before you can pack up the rest of your stuff. Their dinner debate becomes background noise as you find your inbox full of annoyed messages from Dalton's parents, coaches, and even Principal Martinez regarding his grades. Under all that vitriol sits Henry's half-read message about his gallery opening, and you feel the perfect bubble of your day burst around you. Joel and Ellie seem to realize it because they're both quiet when you tune back into their conversation, and you turn in your chair to look at them.
"Are you okay?" Ellie asks, and you snap out of it, putting on your best teacher everything-is-fine face.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Just some emails. It's not important." You wave her off, but Joel isn't so easily convinced. He thinks for a second before pulling his keys out of his pocket and handing them to Ellie.
"Go get some practice driving." He says, jerking his head toward the door, and Ellie's eyes light up.
"Really?!"
"Just bring the car to the front, and don't hit anything!" He says, but she's already taken off with the keys and her stuff in an excited whirlwind. You laugh at her enthusiasm, and Joel leans against one of the desks near you, crossing his arms in front of him. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong."
"Your whole face fell when you opened that computer."
"It's nothing."
"If we're gonna be friends, you're gonna have to tell me if somethin's wrong otherwise I can't help you." He says, and you fight a smile.
"I don't know how you're gonna help me with this one." You say. He bumps your foot with his and gives you a pleading look. Big brown eyes on men like him should be illegal, you think.
"Talk to me." He begs quietly, and you take a deep breath.
"When I was in college, I dated this guy. He was an artist, too, and we were like the little power couple of our program. Things ended kinda badly and abruptly, and I hadn't heard from him since graduation until last week when he invited me to his gallery opening. I really don't want to go alone because, honestly, I haven't been able to get anything showcased in years, and I'm embarrassed. Plus, he broke my heart and made me feel like shit for a few years." You can't stop the words from falling from you once the dam is broken, but Joel doesn't flinch.
"Well, you've got friends to go with, right?"
"I do," you say. "But I want to invite you."
"Oh." He says, seemingly unintentionally.
"Oh." You repeat. "You can say no. I just thought... since we're friends and all now."
"I just... I don't..." he struggles before finally giving in to what he wants to say, what you think he's wanted to say all day. "I don't think I'm smart enough to go to somethin' like that. I don't know anythin' about art. I don't even know how to dress for those kinda things."
"Nobody knows anything about art. Not really, at least. Especially not Henry."
"You do."
"Then I'll stick with you all night and feed you lines about composition or some shit," you say. "And you just wear a nice shirt and some slacks. Maybe a suit jacket if you're feeling snazzy. It's really not as big a deal as people make it seem. We'll go, drink wine, say something about the colors, play nice, and then we'll leave. I'll have you home by 9:30. Earlier if you really hate it that much." He rolls his neck like he's rattling something around in his head or thinking about your offer, and all you can do is watch him and the way his Adam's apple pressing against the delicate skin of his throat. You're convinced he's gonna say no.
"Are you asking me on a date?" He finally asks, and you laugh.
"Not a date."
"Sounds like a date. You even promised to have me home to my girl at a reasonable time."
"Fine, it's a friend date."
"A friend date?" He raises his eyebrows at you, and you nod.
"It's perfectly normal to go on friend dates, Miller. You're just behind on the times."
"Seems like I am. Maybe you can bring me up to speed during the gallery opening?" He says, and your shoulders drop in relief. "I'll pick you up if you agree to help me not look like an idiot."
"You won't look like an idiot."
"Not with you there, I won't." He says, and you want to laugh, but you also want to tear up a little at his kindness. It's been a long week.
"Thank you, Joel. Really. I owe you." You say, and he nods.
"'S my pleasure," he says. For a minute, you two just stare at each other in your empty classroom like teenagers with an obvious crush. You think that's what you feel like. You think that's all you'll ever be able to feel for him. "I should go. I've got an impatient teenager waitin' for me."
"Yeah. Go get her some dinner, and I'll text you the details." You say as you stand to walk him out. He stands to his full height, opens his arms, and approaches you. You didn't think you were hugging territory, but as his arms wrapped around you, you couldn't help but hug him back.
"Goodnight." He says into your hair, lingering for another moment before disappearing as fast as he appeared.
"Goodnight," you say. With that, he starts walking to the open door with a smile stuck to his face. "Hey, Joel," you call before he can step over the threshold, and he turns around to look at you. "Art is for everyone, and even if it wasn't, you're more than smart enough to enjoy it."
"Yes, ma'am." He says with a half-salute and a wink before stepping out of your classroom. You let yourself rest against your desk and take a deep breath. Finally, you let yourself pull out your phone and read the rest of Henry's email detailing the time and place of the gallery.
I hope you can come. It would really mean a lot to me. I miss talking to you and even though things ended the way they did, I still love you.
See you soon,
Henry Hall

Tumblr media
You can’t wait for your two days off. It’s rare that you get two in a row. Your plans are minimal, there’s a country store you like to wander around and the market is open on Saturdays. That liberation that comes with the end of your shift hits and you nearly dance across the store as you issue goodbyes with a chirp.
As you come to the front of the store, you stop short of the center aisle. A familiar voice has you ducking behind the accessories stand, listening with perked ears for your chance to escape. Andy. Again. It’s been two weeks since you made the mistake of being helpful and he’s taken to daily visits in the last few days.
You hear him ask for you. Your coworker apologetically tells him you just left. Thankfully she doesn’t realise how long it took you to do just that.
He accepts the answer with that same disappointment that tinges his tones when you’re drawn to another customer. You peek around as he wanders off listlessly towards the back section of the store. You notice how he seems to veer towards the employee lounge.
You skirt out, refusing to look at your coworker so they can’t flag you down. You push out into the crisp air and heave. You didn’t notice how suffocating the store was becoming. Especially lately.
You don’t want to let the close shave get in the way of your excitement. You’re going to start these two days off right. You stroll around the plaza to the cafe and join the bustling queue inside. The caramel mocha draws your attention as you wait, intent on try the new flavour.
When it’s your turn, you order and move aside to await your prize. You claim your cup and look around. Hm, there’s a small table left in the corner. You weave around and plant your drink on the table for two. You walk by the cafe all the time but you’ve never sat down to enjoy a coffee. You usually just get a medium roast before you clock in.
You settle in and take your book out of your bag. You crack it open to your mark and resume the chapter you’d left undone that morning. You sink into the paragraphs, stopping only to taste the sweet mocha treat.
The ambience of the cafe is buzzing. Voices dip in and out as people mill in and out steadily. You feel wholly invisible amid the rush of patrons. You kind of like the feeling.
You keep your head down as you read, cradling your chin as you get to the last page of the chapter. You sense a shadow looming, someone looking for a place to sit among the cramped seating area. You shrink down as you focus on the pages before you.
You feel a bump on the table and look up as your mocha sloshes over the edge of your lidless cup. You barely move your book out of the way of the spill. As you peer up at the culprit, you barely repress a cringe. Not him. Please, why would the universe do this to you?
“Oh, excuse me–” He smiles. He has nice eyes even if the rest of him annoys you. “I am just looking for somewhere to sit. I didn’t mean to bump into you.” He holds a steaming cup, “I’m happy I did, though.”
“Uh, yeah, well, pretty packed in here,” you say and use a single napkin to soak up the droplets on the table.
“Hm, yeah, popular place,” he comments, “looks like I just missed you at the shop.”
“Mmhmm, I opened,” you say as you crumple up the napkin. You don’t know what to do, he’s not really getting the vibe. The very clear tension that says I’m alone and not looking for company.
“Early morning,” he chuckles and looks around, emphasizing the act and he hums at the lack of seating.
You sigh. You should just leave but you were there first. And you’re almost done your chapter. You’ve barely even had a few sips of your drink too.
“Well, there’s… a chair here, I guess,” you say dully.
“Really? Oh, I don’t want to intrude–”
“I’m just reading,” you reopen your book and put it back on the table, “but you can sit if you want.”
“Thanks,” he eagerly pulls out the chair and sits, his cup meeting the table so hard that it shakes. “Yeah, I got a new book myself.” He unhooks the paper bag on his wrist as he puts it beside his coffee, “I’m really eating up these regency ones.”
“Ah,” you nod and pull your book to lean on the edge of the table, making a point of looking rapt.
“Sorry, sorry, I’ll shut up,” he laughs at himself.
You do your best to ignore his jostling. He takes a slurp of coffee then opens the paper bag with a loud crinkle. Somehow he is more disruptive than the dozen other noises overlapping. He slides out the book and you peek up at his hands as he opens it, breaking the spine first. You tend to be a bit more affectionate with your books.
You reach up without looking and take your cup. You drink, eyes glued to the words. You’re getting irritated. You really can’t get back into the story with him just sitting there. You’re under no obligation to be nice here. This is your personal time.
The more you think, the more annoyed you are. He’s no longer adding to your work, he’s ruining your free time. You take a breath and mark your page.
“Ah, you know what,” you say as you check your phone, “I gotta…” you pause as you raise your head to find him watching you. You’re not sure he only just started that, “I gotta head out actually. I’m going to miss the train.”
“Train? Oh, well, if you need a ride–” he offers.
You do your best not to be too abrupt in your rejection, “that’s fine. No, really, that’s too much.”
You stand and pack up your book in your bag. You shrug on your jacket and sling your knapsack over one shoulder as you grab your drink.
“See ya,” you say as he watches you with a stitch in his forehead.
“Yeah, see ya,” he utters, “you work tomorrow?”
You swallow as you weigh your options. You smile and tap a finger against the side of the cup, “uh, yeah, I start at noon.”
“Great, I’ll see ya then,” he brightens up.
“Okay,” you hold back a scoff, “er, bye.”
You hurry past the table, brushing against his arm in the tight space, and go to the stand to grab a lid for your cup. You snap it on and beeline for the door, slipping out behind another customer. You pass the window and glance over as you do.
He’s watching you. Again. He waves as your eyes meet. You blanch and you flutter your fingers vaguely. You quickly cross the lot to the far end, well out of his view. This is getting strange.

An Incomplete List: Eight
Tumblr media
So we all know that this was behind the scenes, and this #8 was not in the movie. So, instead, I shall lean into it inspiring me with a prompt. (As it does each time I look at this image, or think of the quote from the list.) I really like to imagine this is Alex and Henry being boyfriends, reading together in the park, okay? Henry starts reciting lines from the book Alex is reading, only Alex hasn't gotten to that part yet and is now spoiled.
Alex's long eyelashes blink rapidly as he looks at Henry, sitting primly on a park bench beside him, speaking words that he has not yet read in the book that he has been incredibly invested in for the last two days.
Henry is breathless as he emphatically recites the fifth paragraph of dialogue from the main character's love interest. "It has never felt like a chore to love you, Andy, merely an annoyance at times. I was annoyed that I realized I loved you while we were watching Pricilla Queen of the Dessert. You were more interested in reciting every stupid line from that movie than you were interested in me sitting beside you, having a gay panic about my feelings for you. I was annoyed when you first kissed me while you were drunk and laughed it off, then avoided the conversation any time I tried to bring it up. I was annoyed when you admitted to me that you had been in love with me for months, but got angry when I told you that I had loved you for years at that point, as if it was impossible for me to have loved you much, much longer. But it has never been a chore to bask in your heart's giving nature, your pockets of sass that tell me you are, in fact, not always perfect, and it has never been, nor will ever be, a chore or to love you completely, just as you are."
Alex coughs to cover his moan of want that starts to pour out of his mouth. He drops his book to his lap and demands, "Did you just give away the climax of this book? You know that I haven't finished, given that I am clearly in the middle of reading it?"
Henry shrugs. "I am sorry that I ruined the climax, Alex. I thought that with your level of intelligence, you would have already realized what was about to happen."
Alex glares. "Sure, sure, I knew they were about to break up because Andy is an idiot and can't accept that his struggles are not damaging Hartley's life and because he thinks Hartley deserves better than him, but I didn't need you to summarize all of it!"
Henry rolls his eyes, takes the book away from Alex, and flips a couple of pages forward. "I'll have you know that I recited that word for word. It was not a summary."
"There's no way you memorized all of that from a book you told me you read fifteen years ago," Alex says, skimming his finger down on the page Henry stopped at.
"I apologize love, but I did," Henry says, sounding proud.
"I think you're missing the point," Alex tells him.
Henry glances at him with a smirk and then points to the part he recited for Alex. "I promise you that in return for me spoiling that climax, I will make sure you experience a much more fulfilling one tonight."
Alex reminds himself that he is in public and he cannot show Henry just how hot he actually finds what Henry did, truly is. How beautiful he is whenever he does something he enjoys, and how turned on he becomes when Henry becomes passionate and proud of himself. Alex leans closer and Henry begins to read the part once more. He has to admit, but only to himself of course, Henry's voice reading Andy and Hartley's lines is much better than the ones his imagination came with up. He leans back on the bench, drapes his arm across Henry's shoulders, and lets him tell the story.

Pairing: Eddie Munson X Reader
Prompt: “I don’t care what they think. To me you’re perfect.”
Tumblr media
“So why are you alone? Did your freak boyfriend finally break up with you? I was wondering when he’d come to his senses, I can’t believe anyone would date you, even him.”
You sniffed as you wiped the tears from your cheeks, not that it helped much as more quickly replaced them. It had been a rough week, made even rougher by the cruel words from Andy and the rest of the basketball players not too long ago, which finally pushed you to your breaking point.
You had failed an important test and missed turning in an assignment this week, which was causing stress at home. And normally that would be something you could handle because you had Eddie to lean on, but you had hardly seen him at all this week as he seemed to be constantly busy. Corroded Coffin had an important gig coming up and most of his free time was spent with them working on perfecting their songs and the rest of his time was working on helping Dustin design his own home brewed D&D campaign.
You understood how important the show was for the band, and how much Eddie cared for Dustin and wanted to help him. But you couldn’t help but feel unimportant to him, and the comments from Andy were now ringing in your ears on repeat. Maybe they were right. Maybe Eddie was done with you and was getting ready to break up with you. You hoped more than anything that you were just being dramatic, but you had to admit that you were scared.
“There you are!” You heard Eddie’s voice from behind you, the sound causing you to jump slightly. You quickly wiped your tears and hid your face as you heard the leaves crunch under his feet as he walked up to the bench you were sitting on. You felt the seat bend slightly as he sat down next to you. “Sweetheart?” He asked when you didn’t respond.
You couldn’t help the sniff you let out, alerting Eddie to your emotional state. “Hey, baby, what’s going on?” He questioned as he gently moved your face to look at him. He took in your tear stained face and puffy red eyes, realizing you must have been crying for a while.
You gulped nervously, worried to tell him for fear he would think you were being ridiculous. But you also needed to know, and hoped that maybe talking to him would help ease your anxiety.
“Andy. He and some of the other basketball players surrounded me at my locker.” You started, sniffing again as fresh tears clouded your vision. “He- he uhm he asked if you had broken up with me because I was alone. And said that you must have come to your senses finally and left me.” The tears fell down your cheeks again.
Eddie felt like his heart was shattering as he saw the utterly broken expression on your face. “Oh sweet thing, I’m so sorry that happened.” He started, pulling you into his arms. “You know I love you baby, I couldn’t ever leave you.”
“He also said that he couldn’t believe you would date me, that anyone would date me.” You choked out, lip quivering as you looked up at him. “One of them even said I was ugly, and annoying.” You watched the anger flash across his face at your words.
“You know that’s not true, right, sweetheart? You’re amazing.” He pressed, placing a kiss on your head.
“But they said-“
“I don’t care what they think babe,” He interrupted, pulling back slightly to look at you fully, a serious look on his face. “To me you're perfect. You’re the best thing to ever happen to me. You’re literally my dream come true.” His expression softened as he looked at your surprised wide eyes. “I know I’ve been busy this week and we haven’t seen each other, and I’m so sorry about that. I promise I’m going to be better, because being away from you that long was awful.” He mirrored the soft smile that graced your face. “But I need you to know, the worst thing I can even imagine is not being with you. I love you and I’m not going anywhere.”
“I love you too, Eddie.” You said, feeling like a weight was lifted off of your shoulders. Eddie cupped the sides of your face, wiping the tears from your cheeks before placing a heartfelt kiss on your lips, comforting you completely.

Weekend away... Andy Barber x reader one shot
(The Florist next-door Part 17)
This is a oneshot that can be read as Part 17 or on its own.
Tumblr media
Warnings: 18+ readers only, swearing, male masterbation, graphic details of homemade porn, use of nicknames (daddy, sweetheart, baby), oral (f-receiving), outdoors sex, technically cheating, sexy lumberjack Andy
"Andy!" You called out from the kitchen. "Andy, come quick!"
Andy quickly ran down the stairs as fast as he could, being careful not to trip. "What? What's wrong?" He asked in a slight panic as he ran up to you. "Y'kay?"
You nodded grinning at him, "Give me your hands." You held yours out for his.
Andy raised his eyebrow as he did as you asked. "Why?"
"Just wait." You giggled as you placed his large hands over the curve of your swollen belly and laid yours over his.
Andy's eyes widened as he felt something tap against his hand. "Wow... He's really in there." His eyes filled with tears as he smiled at you.
"Or she." You reminded him making him roll his eyes playfully. Your eyes lit up as Jacob walked into the room. "Jacob, come feel."
He raised his eyebrow at you, "Seriously?"
You nodded, grabbing his hand and pulled him towards you and his dad.
He let out a huff as he let you put his hand on your belly next to Andy's. "What am I-" Jacob quickly snatched his hand back. "That's weird."
"Jacob," Andy tutted as you chuckled. "It's not weird. That's your baby brother or sister in there."
Jacob nodded. "We're being kicked by another human from the inside of, Y/N. It's weird."
"Huh..." You looked at Andy, "He has a point."
Andy nodded, "Yeah... It's weird."
You shared a look with each other before the three of you burst out laughing.
Andy suddenly woke, his dream quickly fading away as he looked around the room he was in and remembered where he was.
Tumblr media
His dream had felt so real, he almost missed it. He'd never thought about having another kid, Jacob was always enough, but since the two of you admitted your feelings for one another, he'd felt himself craving it. He wanted to have a family with you. He wanted Jacob to be a big brother. He wanted to see Jacob roll his eyes as his little brother or sister annoyed him. Andy knew Jacob would secretly love it but he wouldn't let on, just like he does whenever Andy wants to spend time with him.
He smiled to himself as he watched you sleep peacefully beside him.
When the two of you arrived the previous afternoon, Andy was worried that perhaps he hadn't picked the right cabin.
It was somewhere up the side of a mountain, surrounded by trees and although it was on the smaller side, it was still luxurious. It had a hot tub on the deck, a big claw foot bath tub and big fireplaces the required a lot of wood chopping. But when he saw how your eyes lit up as you spun around to face him, he knew he made the right decision.
This weekend was about the pair of you relaxing and just being a couple, being able to forget about everything else that wasn't in that cabin for a couple of days.
Andy decided since it was still early he'd make you breakfast before waking you,letting you sleep as long as possible. You deserved it after he tired you out.
The pair of you were at it like rabbits yesterday, the excitement of being alone getting the better of you.
Andy shook his head with a soft chuckle as he thought back.
You brought out a side of him that he thought had died a long time ago. The two of you had had more sex in the past few weeks than he and Laurie had had in the last few years.
He felt like a young man again with you. Sure he wasn't that old but he was still nearly forty. Laurie had made him feel empty and trapped. With you, he felt loved and wanted, needed by someone who couldn't keep their hands to themselves just as much as he couldn't.
Andy looked down at you as you shifted in bed, moaning softly as the bed covers fell down and revealed your bare breasts. God, you were beautiful. Andy moved his hand down to his hardening cock and gave it a soft palm.
Have some control, Barber. The poor girl will be sore after last night.
With a deep sigh and a hard on, Andy hoped out of bed with his cell in his hand and went into the bathroom deciding to have a shower to calm himself down before he headed down to make breakfast.
With the door shut and the shower running, Andy opened his cell and found the folder that was hidden away. It contained all the pictures and videos he had of the two of you together. Not that he needed any help getting himself off, his imagination was more than enough but he couldn't help himself. He loved hearing your beautiful noises.
Andy hopped into the shower once he'd propped his cell up facing the shower with a video of you on all fours and your ass in the air.
Andy was fucking you hard and fast from behind, your cunt (that he'd already spent ages eating out like a man starved) was practically sucking his cock back in, begging to be full as he shoved his thumb into your asshole with one hand and recorded everything with the other hand. You were using one hand to rub your clit as you moaned like a whore.
"That's it... Taking my cock so well... You gonna be my good girl?... You gonna let daddy fill you up?... Hmm? Gonna let daddy fuck you full of cum?"
Andy leaned against the glass of the shower as the hot water ran over his broad shoulders and back, his mouth fell open as he pumped his cock in time with the video.
"Fuck," Andy moaned as he watched himself on the pull all the way out of your pussy to reveal your abused hole before he shoved his cock back in making you cry out in pleasure.
Andy's head fell back as he thought about how it feels to be inside of you.
He moaned deeply, using his other hand to fondle his balls as he twisted his hand around his cock. "Oh, fuck..."
Andy's eyes flicked over to his cell as he heard himself cry out in pleasure.
Andy moaned along with himself as he came over his hand, his eyes glued to his screen.
Andy pulled his cock out of you with a breathy chuckle. "Look at that. Fucking beautiful..." His cum leaked out of your hole before he brushed his fingers against you, scooping his cum up and pushing it back inside you making you moan loudly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Do you know how to do this?" You asked Andy as the two of you stood outside where the fire wood was kept.
This morning you were woken up by the smell of a delicious breakfast in bed brought to you by an equally delicious looking Andy. After the pair of you laid in bed and ate breakfast (with the occasional make-out) you dressed for the day before heading outside. You went for a walk around the small woods that was by the cabin before Andy said he should chop some more fire wood before it rained.
"Yes, I do." Andy nodded.
"Really? So, you chop a lot of wood during your cases?" You asked playfully.
Andy let out a soft sigh as he looked at you. "Believe it or not, I did go camping with my buddies from college. Had to chop wood then, even built fires."
You nodded, "Okay... So why couldn't you put the tent up in the garden then?" You asked trying not to laugh.
Andy sighed again, "Things weren't as complicated back then, okay?"
"Sure. I get it... Back then you probably used sticks and leaves to make shelter, right? Or lived in a cave." You giggled.
Andy put his hands on his hips as he glared at you, "Do you want a spanking? 'Cause I'll happily give you one out here."
You held your hands up, "Sorry, I'll behave."
Andy hummed not quite believing you. He grabbed a log from the pile and placed it on top of the stump where the axe was resting against then picked up the axe.
Your mouth fell open as you watched Andy swing his arms around and smash the axe into the log, splitting it in two. Your lumberjack Andy fantasy was coming true right in front of you. You but your bottom lip as you continued to watch Andy, it was way hotter than you thought it would be.
You watched him repeat the job a few times before you cleared your throat, folding your arms across your chest as you watched him, "You really can chop wood."
Andy smirked as he looked up at you, "Want to have a go?"
You scoffed, "There's no way in hell, I can do that without chopping my foot off." You said.
Andy chuckled putting the axe down and held his hand out to you. "Come here. I'll help."
You let out a heavy sigh and crossed your arms. Took Andy's hand and let him guide you to stand in front of him.
He put his hands on your hips, "Okay, put your feet a little wider, like that..." Andy then took the axe and held it in front of you. "Now, wrap your hands around it, one there... One there," He placed hands overs yours, lifting the axe so it was in front of you.
His thick arms were wrapped around you, his whole body caging you in as he pressed himself against you.
You gasped as Andy rubbed his cock against your ass cheeks. "Andy," You giggled as he dropped his face against the side of your neck and began to kiss you. "I thought you were going to teach me-oh, god," You moaned as he lightly bit and sucked your neck.
He chuckled, "I am," He kissed your cheek before clearing his throat. "Okay... Were gonna lift on three... one, two, three," You raised your arms in the air with Andy before bringing the axe down and smashing it into the log.
Andy took the axe from you as you began jumping up and down in celebration. He shook his head with a chuckle, sticking the axe into the stump as he watched you.
"That was awesome." You threw your arms around his neck and kissed him.
"You can have a go on your own if you like." Andy said as he placed his hands on your waist.
You shook your head. "I'm good."
"Okay..." Andy nodded. "Well, how about we make your fantasy come true?" He asked with a playful smirk. His hands moving down over the curve of your ass and giving it a squeeze.
"It's pretty much come true already." You but your bottom lip as he leaned in and kissed your cheek.
Andy hummed, moving his lips down your neck, "What about the fucking against a tree part?" He smirked against your throat.
Your breath caught as Andy began to run his tongue over your pulse. "What if... Someone, sees?" You moaned softly.
"We're the only people round, sweetheart. And I know the perfect spot." He reached up with his left hand and cupped your face, pressing his lips against yours.
Andy took your hand before he lead you around the side of the cabin. He turned off the little path into the trees, guiding you through until he stopped walking.
"Look," He pointed through the trees, pulling you to stand in front of him.
Tumblr media
You gasped, your breath being taken away by the beautiful view. "Wow," You smiled, "It's... Beautiful."
Andy rested his chin on your shoulder as wrapped his arms around you from behind. "Yeah... It's is." He smiled at you as you turned around to look at him.
You pushed yourself up on your tiptoes as you wrapped your rms around his neck and pressed your lips against his softly, "It's the perfect spot." You whispered.
Andy smiled down at you as he cupped your face and kissed you again. "Stand back, sweetheart." He whispered.
You nodded and moved back until your back pressed against a tree.
Andy dropped to his knees in front of you with a smirk as he hooked his fingers into the waist band of your leggings and pulled them down your thighs. You bit your bottom lip as you watched Andy look up at you.
"No panties?" He raised his eyebrow at you.
You shook your head with a small giggle.
Andy shook his head with a soft chuckle, "Naughty girl."
You let out a gasp as Andy leaned forwards and threw your leg over his shoulder and pressed his face between your thighs.
You moaned softly as you ran your fingers through his hair. "Oh, Andy..." Your mouth fell open as he sucked tour clit before running his tongue up your slit. "Oh God!" You cried out as he pushed his tongue inside of you.
"S'good," He moaned against you.
You moaned deeply as Andy shook his head side to side, fucking you with his tongue as his fingers dug into the globes of your ass.
Your toes curled as Andy sucked on your clit, working your until you were coming with a scream all over his face. If it wasn't for him holding you against the tree you'd have fallen down for sure.
Andy unhooked your leg and slowly stood up with a grin. He let his hands trail up your sides, raising your shirt as they did until your breast were on show. Your head fell back with a deep moan as Andy fondled them, licking and sucking one pebbled nipple before moving on to the other.
He pulled back from you with pop and smirked, "You okay, sweetheart?"
You nodded taking on deep breaths. "I'm good." You smiled up at him with a soft chuckle.
Andy reached up and cupped your face as he pressed a loving kiss against your lips. You moaned at your taste in his tongue as he deepened the kiss.
Andy quickly unbuckled his belt and pushed his pants down, "Turn around, sweetheart," He said before giving you a quick peck.
You let out a small giggle turned around to face the tree. Andy gripped your hips and pulled your ass out as he kicked your legs apart with his foot.
"That's it," Andy said as he took a hold of his thick cock and ran the leaky tip through your wet folds. He bit hit bottom lip as the head if his cock filled your hole.
"Don't tease, Andy, please." You whined.
Andy did as you wanted and slowly pushed the rest if his cock inside of you. You both moaned in unison as your warm cunt engulfed his cock.
His hands gripped your hips as he bottomed out. "Fuck," He grunted, feeling you clenched around him.
Andy began to move, making you moan with each stroke if his cock.
"That's it," He groaned, "Takin' my cock s'good." Andy brought his right hand down on your ass cheek making you cry out. He picked up the pace a little as he used the same hand to slide back under your shirt to grope your breast.
Your head fell back with a high pitched moan as Andy pinched your nipple and fucked you a little deeper.
"Fuck! Baby, you close?" Andy grunted as your cunt squeezed his cock.
You nodded whimpering. "Harder, Andy, please." You moaned pushing your ass back to meet him.
"Fahk-" Andy let go of your breast and slid his hand down your stomach until his fingers pressed against your clit. "Come on, baby. Cum for me." He rubbed your clit as he fucked you harder and fast making you cry out. "Oh, shit," Andy's mouth fell open as he felt you cum around his cock.
Andy moved forwards, resting his left hand beside your head in the tree, caging you in with his broad shoulders and arms so his weight pressed into you. He kissed your neck softly as he began to fuck you from a new angle, his fingers still rubbing your clit in circles.
You moaned, babbling incoherent words as you wrapped your arm around him, digging your nails into his backside.
He pressed his forehead against your temple and whispered, "I love you, Y/N."
You reached up with your arm and threaded your fingers through his hair as you turned head to look at him. "I love you too, Andy." You crashed your lips against his in a hungry passionate kiss as a third orgasm ripped through you.
Andy stilled, holding you against the tree as he too came, your mouth claiming his moans as the pair of you continued to kiss, neither of you aware of the rain that had slowly started to fall. Neither of you cared. Nothing else mattered as you held each other.
So, I saw all the posts about the promos for this thing coming from the John Oliver side of Tumblr, and I wasn't really planning to watch it despite my general interest in John Oliver, because I just don't understand the appeal of watching people eat and/or make and/or talk about food. I've said before that I couldn't get into Off Menu, or something like Bake Off, because of triggers I have from my years of cutting weight for sports, which is true but doesn't even really apply in this case. One 30-minute video of eating wings isn't going to trigger me (I do eat and talk about food without a problem, it's just doing long deep dives into that bothers me). It's just not interesting to me. John Robins and Elis James have started this feature on their radio show called Tick of a Taste where they try something unusual (and usually challenging, in similar ways to hot wings) and then describe it, and it's the only part of their radio show where I kind of tune out. I just don't get the appeal of turning food into entertainment.
So I was going to give this one a miss, but then it actually aired and @lastweeksshirttonight alerted me to the fact that there's a bit of Edinburgh chat, and obviously I cannot skip potential Chocolate Milk Gang content. So I watched it, and was not disappointed.I don't know who that interviewer is, and I did not expect to like him, given that he's an American man who makes, I assume, a whole series based on filming celebrities eating spicy food. I'm vaguely aware of that sort of "content creator" genre of YouTube, and it doesn't sound like fun. But I have to admit, he conducted a surprisingly great interview for a man sitting across from some hot sauce bottles. Asked good questions, they were insightful and interesting and displayed an impressive level of knowledge about his subject.
At this point, I'd like to take a brief moment to use this video as an excuse to slag off Marc Maron:
Marc Maron interviewed John Oliver in 2012, an episode that I listened to because John was fascinating in it but Marc was absolutely insufferable, as he's been in all the WTF episodes I've heard (which I believe is four: John Oliver, Andy Zaltzman, Stewart Lee, and James Acaster). And this is far from the main reason why Marc was insufferable, in fact it was a tiny thing that didn't matter, but Marc was so weird about the differences between British and American English. He kept stopping John to ask for the definition of British words that might not be common in North America, but should be more than easy enough to work out from context, and Marc couldn't just do that, he had to stop and treat it like some weird exotic thing that John said the word "headteacher". At one point in the interview, John is talking about the place where he plays a game that some call football and others call soccer, and you can hear him say "the p-field". Clearly started to say "pitch" and then realized that this annoying interviewer would pick him up on that so he changed it to field. That's what I thought of when I saw the above video clip - a fun example of the opposite of that. Well done to the hot wings interviewer for not being like Marc Maron.
The hot wings interviewer still pronounces Edinburgh about as badly as Marc Maron does, but I'm starting to think I should be a bit careful about complaining when Americans do that, because I'm not 100% sure that I say it correctly. I know how it's supposed to sound, so I can tell when someone says it wrong. But I think it might just be a hard word to say in a North American accent, so it's possible that I also mess it up, and six months from now I'm going to be in Edinburgh and probably at some point saying that word out loud to people who will know how it's meant to be said, so I might want to start saying now that it's fine if you do it wrong. I don't do it as wrong as that guy does, though. I'm pretty sure the word "bro" doesn't come into it when I say it. I also say it better than Marc Maron does.
Anyway, that is not the main point of this post, the main point of this post is this:
How the fuck have I never heard that story before? This is my exact period of specialty - John Oliver in his Chocolate Milk Gang years - and I have gathered up all the references to it that I can possibly find, and yet I'd never heard him tell that one before. I'm so glad I watched the weird hot wings video, just for that. I wish he'd tell us who the other comedian was. I have several guesses.
You know, I hadn't really thought before about the fact that John Oliver would have done his own material at those Late 'n' Live gigs. I knew he ran around taking cows apart, and I knew other people did their actual sets, but I hadn't thought of the fact that at some point John would have been on stage by himself telling John Oliver jokes. I don't think the stage where they took the cow apart was really the place for early 00s-era John Oliver jokes. I'm not surprised it went badly.
John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman do have a long list of stories of gigs they've done that have gone very badly (one gig in particular, the stories of which I made into a compilation nearly two years ago now), and I know all comedians have stories like that, but it doesn't surprise me that Zoliver have more than most. 00s-era Zaltzman and Oliver, individually and together, were not club comedians. Or at least, they didn't have club material, but they were not yet quite famous enough to never do clubs. London has a much larger and more diverse comedy scene than we do around where I live, but still, I think I can use my local comedy club as some kind of basis for comparison. And if someone stood up at my local comedy club and started telling Zaltzman and Oliver jokes, they would be met with baffled silence at the absolute best. They might get stabbed.
What jokes was he telling at Late 'n' Live? Was he doing his Political Animal material? He had a bunch of political and topical stuff back then, but that's not all he did. John Oliver definitely had more mainstream material in his arsenal than Andy Zaltzman did, I guess he could have brought out his train story and the one about not eating peas as a kid. Though actually, even the peas story is basically a political joke. Was he doing the stuff about crying at sporting montages as early as that?
Actual recordings of the stand-up John Oliver did in Britain are rare, though I've managed to find a few. Most notably the one of him and Zaltzman doing their full 2004 Edinburgh show, in 2005, that got released on The Bugle in multiple pieces but I stitched them together into one file, and… I mean, you can't do that at Late 'n' Live. I know I haven't been there, but if you could do that at early 00s Late 'n' Live, then I have drastically misunderstood the nature of the event. You can't do that. You'll get stabbed.
The other source of information about early Oliver stand-up is reviews, which are worth reading because they're often quite funny. @lastweeksshirttonight, I can't remember if I've ever sent you the Steve Bennett review of his debut Edinburgh show, but I'm tagging you because if you haven't read it before then you definitely should. It's hilarious. I don't always agree with Steve Bennett's opinions or approach to the mechanics of the English language, but I have to admit: "John Oliver has based his debut Edinburgh show on death, a concept he can be no stranger to, given the lukewarm reception his obscure observations receive," is a sick burn.
Was John doing that at Late 'n' Live? You definitely can't do what was described in that review at Late 'n' Live. You probably shouldn't do that anywhere, really.
There are better reviews from the next few years, like these ones, which both basically boil down to: Zaltzman and Oliver are intelligent guys who write well and it's all very clever and even at times funny, but God, they're both really annoying. So annoying. It was funny but I didn't like them because they were annoying. Did he annoy the people at Late 'n' Live that way? Is that why the man wanted to stab him?
Steve seemed to like them better in 2005, but still, I don't think you can do that at Late 'n' Live. "Oliver and Zaltzman are at the vanguard of a new wave of satire taking vast global issues - fair trade, the apathy paralysing democracy, immigration - and trying to simplify them to expose their flaws, which suddenly seem so blindingly obvious when put in such clear terms." Yeah, John, obviously the guy threatened to stab you if you tried to do that to him when he was drunk at 1 AM. Obviously.
What did you do to them, John? And while we're at it, what did you do to the people of York that one time?
Anyway, the whole Hot Ones interview was pretty interesting, they touched a few times on that side of John Oliver that I find particularly enjoyable, as he discusses the way he really enjoys tension and doing fucked up things and getting in trouble, but also has a socio-political worldview that says venerating that stuff is bad, and this creates its own tension. It's something I've heard him talk about before, I've always enjoyed it, I wasn't expecting to hear it explored so much in a hot wings interview, but here we are. Thanks for the recommendations, John Oliver side of Tumblr.
