ever-wish
"Did," Gilbert said hesitantly, peering over his teacup, "you ever wish to accept Dad's offer back then?"
Miss Cuthbert stared at him for a long, long time. Her eyes, like Anne's, were blue, though they weren't close in hue. Anne's eyes tended to grey, especially when she was excited—which often—when Miss Cuthbert's was as bright as the summer morning sky.
"Sometimes," she finally answered. This didn't sound like a penitent confession, just a simple statement. "In another world, maybe I have enough bravery to say yes."
"I think you don't like presupposing things that will never happen?"
"No, but living with Anne gets you used to the imagination, I guess." Miss Cuthbert placed a plate of chocolate biscuits in front of him. "You won't be living a boring life later, I know. She'll keep you on your toes with all her exhilaration."
Gilbert stammered, grateful he wasn't sipping his tea. If he did, it would all spill over the front of his shirt by now. "I—"
"Calm down; I know you're not proposing anytime soon," said Miss Cuthbert, one brow lifted. "Both of you are still too young. There's plenty of time. But one day, it will happen, won't it?"
Gilbert remembered the emerald gold ring in the velvet pouch on his nightstand. Anne was always beautiful in green. "Yes, Miss Cuthbert."
"Anne is not free from mistakes and recklessness—God knows she's had a lot. In a way, she's had her own vanity. Yet she's a wonderful, smart girl. A pretty one too. I raised her to be a woman who never doubted her value." Miss Cuthbert told him, a proud smile across her face. "And you're a good boy who grows up to be a good man. With your own flaws and faults, indeed. It's not like there's a perfect, unblemished human in this world. Who else could Avonlea's boys I entrust her future to than you? You two are good to one another; always push each other to be better. It's been like that, apart from the day you first met."
Spontaneously, Gilbert rubbed the side of his face that Anne had whacked him with a slate nearly eight years ago. He stopped doing so when Miss Cuthbert looked at him with an amused smile. He looked away, embarrassed, pretending to be interested in the cup motif even though he knew it was pointless. Bash always said he had this soft dopey smile on his face when he heard or talked about Anne, whether or not she was in the same room.
Please control your face after you two sneak into some hidden crevice I would never, ever wanted to know, said Bash when they were just finishing Queens. The tips of your ears are awfully scarlet, Blythe, and Mrs. Lynde will sniff your behaviour suspiciously from a mile away for that. How Muriel and the rest of the school building don't despair seeing you pine after Anne so desperately from across the classroom is inexplicable.
Diana, at least, must have been in despair. For all her long-suffering service watching them being terribly oblivious and insecure, as well as being Anne's loveliest bosom friend, their first daughter will be named after her. Leastwise that was what Anne once spoke; whether she was serious or not, they had to see a few more years. And it turned out Josie did too, but Anne refused to name any of their hypothetical daughters after her after she congratulated them on their courtship by conveying if they didn't accomplish it before 1899 was over, she was already scheming some devious, almost positively improper plan to get them together.
Now, Josie and Anne, very much older than the silly sixteen-year-olds they had been—Gilbert quoted those from Anne herself—got along well on the best of days. On a mediocre day or the worst, they already didn't look so achingly eager to kick each other into the Lake of Shining Waters. When Gilbert asked the other girls why such an attitude, Jane just rolled her eyes so hard; he thought they would pop out of their sockets. Ruby giggled for so long before explaining that the complexities of the girls' delicate friendship wouldn't make it to his understanding. He said none of their former classmates in their right mind would say Anne or Josie were delicate if they wanted their life to stay in peace. Tillie shooed him away to hurry up and dance with Anne after that 'absolutely ridiculous' comment—her words, not his.
"Had I accepted your father's offer, you would not have been born, and Anne would never be with us." Miss Cuthbert poured herself some tea and then continued in an afterthought. "And I wouldn't trade Anne for anything in this world.
She's my daughter, you know. Not by blood, and she won't call me Mother. But still. She's my daughter. Of all people, you are the one who definitely understands."
Gilbert thought of Bash knitting next to the fireplace; Dellie was running under the row of apple trees his father and his father before him had planted; Hazel's fish on the smoker; Elijah's jokes at the dinner table; Mary's grave, which was never devoid of flowers.
"Yes," he responded. Then, he added almost without thinking. "Then the kids will be happy to call you Grandma, I suppose. And Matthew Grandpa, for sure."
He immediately regretted seeing Miss Cuthbert look at him strangely, her forehead creased. Gilbert was about to utter a stuttering apology for his bluntness when her face softened, and she said, "I'd be glad to have that honour, then. Someday."
"Someday." Gilbert agreed shyly.

I relate to Anne Shirley-Cuthbert so much, because I, too, like to complain to my friends about how ugly I am on a daily basis.

In 'Anne with an E' I think it's really interesting how her teacher, refers to her as 'Anne Shirley' in the beginning, but when se confronts Billy for being a bully (when they're rebuilding the house) and earns their respect, he starts calling her 'Anne Shirley-Cuthbert'
Which I think, is a very nice detail

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1985)
Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.

After church, Mrs. Andrews approached them. She didn't immediately say anything but instead looked at them as if she wanted to scan and judge something. Anne had gotten used to it—on the rare occasion, she had hung around at Jane's house and received similar looks. But Gilbert, who had never given by Mrs. Andrews's sharp gaze other than when he was eight and dropped a bunch of tadpoles onto her new skirt at a church picnic, felt a shudder in his own shoes.
"Well," she said at last and smiled kindly, full of appreciation and a rare joy that Anne had never seen directed at anyone other than her children. "How nice it is to see you two finally together. I told Jane you were really made for each other, and it wouldn't be long before you two started courting. Glad my hunch didn't go wrong."
Anne's jaw nearly dropped to the floor, but she managed to manage a heartfelt thank you. If the congratulations were surprising, what Mrs. Andrews said to Gilbert next was shocking.
"I trust your wisdom to let her finish Queens and university before bringing her down the aisle as your wife?"
Horrified by the idea that anyone would think he would stymie Anne's path to a bachelor's degree, Gilbert nodded and said firmly, "Yes, ma'am."
(Avonlea folks reacted to its latest courting couple.)
