Fic-to-Art #38: Ozai carries Azula to the physicians' wing

This has been done for A WHILE now, but I didn't post it because the past days have been chaotic and not just on a personal level. For one thing, I really wasn't eager to drop this when people were losing their shit massively over the liveaction and its recontextualization of Azula and Ozai's dynamics, I didn't look forward to releasing this just to be told that whatever I've done in my story is somehow wrong, sooooooooo... that held me back, for a few days.

Then? The AI-Tumblr deal started to be talked about and I may or may not have freaked out about that too. Sooo... this is the first glazed and nightshaded piece of my creation, as consequence. The original, clean and proper version is available in my Patreon. Is this me being a dick to Tumblr-only people? Unfortunately, it very much isn't, I'm not trying to say that if you want the best iterations of my art, you should pay me for it... this is squarely, entirely, at staff/the CEO's feet. Obviously, there's the insecure side of me that goes "what makes you think they'd steal YOUR art when there are so many better artists out there!" but ultimately? AI is about taking everything en masse. It isn't a matter of developing a criteria about who makes the better art... it's just taking EVERYTHING and trying to repurpose it in whatever twisted way it needs to. Therefore? I think my choice is more of a matter of caution than anything else. Once AI bullshit dies out (and I really hope it does), we may just return to the same level of quality across all my accounts. For now, it is what it is.

ANYWAY! Point is this artwork is very much what my Patrons happened to vote for this month, a very shocking scene where Ozai reacted in the least foreseen way to Azula being attacked. Azula's confusion/terror comes from a place of not knowing what to do and being powerless to stop her father even if she doesn't feel comfortable with his help... but for once, Ozai isn't making a dreadful choice that will only devastate his daughter. He's actually worried about her health... and feeling genuine guilt over what landed her in the situation where she was in danger in the first place. Yes. I like me my complex Ozai who finally learned actions have consequences. He bores me to death otherwise :') if anyone STILL doesn't know that this whole situation is Gladiator-specific, then I shall clarify fully: this is artwork based on my fic. It's about a story that has been developing these characters for ALMOST ELEVEN YEARS now. It has nothing to do with whatever's going on in canon or in the liveaction, the scene in question was written almost two years ago and the artwork proposed and voted for several days before the liveaction aired. Ergo: there is no connection between this and that. Nor am I saying through this piece that Ozai is a good father. He is not. He can still be an interesting character to work with on a narrative level anyway :')

Alright. With that out of the way, hope you guys like this piece! The big one I haven't posted is ALSO finished, also glazed and nightshaded, but I think I might just end up posting it on the 26th if I don't have time to do anything big for our eleventh anniversary... yep, I'm so busy I don't even have a huge project in mind this time. Also? I have a lot to write and I'm finally happily writing it, and I would like to continue doing that...

Wow!!!

Hello, hello, I was not expecting my little game to blow up so quickly!!! I've been having so much fun looking through all the wonderful artwork people are making, so I wanted to throw out this little comic in response!

I'm so glad everyone is having fun with this!!!

I'm not a very popular or well known artist, I just doodle my little things for fun, and I wanna shout out my best friend @pokemon-ash-aus for really getting me into drawing Mew! Or rather, my own little version of one!

Adrienn Banai: The Rat Lover

I didn't want to post about any of this, but this person forced my hand.

I can't let this person run around on this hellsite anymore.

For those not in the know, this person harasses artists into drawing their husbando: a rat character named "Grey" from the children's series "Larva Island". Sometimes they also harass people into drawing Grey's grandpa, a female version of Grey named "Greyless", Grey wearing Roxanne's dress from "A Goofy Movie", and plenty of parodies of the opening scene of said movie. Like, they subjected one person to draw that same sequence with different characters like 6-7 times. And the "best" part? Sometimes they steal the poor victim's art to claim it as their own. And sometimes, they create edits of them WITHOUT CREDITING THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS. And when they do get caught, they apologize. A lot. But that's only a front to get respect again.

And I was one of their unfortunate victims. This person is weird as all hell; they ship this rat with Pibby (a character that is canonically from a preschool show), Meilin Lee (A hecking 13 year old girl), and Adrienn themselves.

The rat, according to the user, is 15 while the female version of the rest, his girlfriend, is 12.

Adrienn themselves are either 17 or 19.

The fandoms they follow are: -Courage the Cowardly Dog -Friday Night Funkin -Learning with Pibby -Little Nightmares -Turning Red -Anything Disney related (Goofy mostly) -Steven Universe -Made in Abyss -Road to El Dorado -Eddsworld -Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -Super Mario series and, most importantly, Larva.

It's already kind of weird enough, but then I did more digging on this person. They have a butt ton of accounts on a multitude of social media websites. They have a few on reddit, a few on wikia, one on vimeo, and a few on behance, of all places. They have a long history of harassing users, especially on reddit and wikia. They have the most accounts on Tumblr, with five (two of them are inactive.) The second biggest is wikia, with four. The earliest accounts were on DeviantArt, which makes a lot of sense. Oh, but it gets better. They have uncensored nsfw content on two tumblrs. This is from one of their accounts. I am not going to show you the image, but I'm going to show you the tags:

I mean, I'm glad that they tagged it as "rule 34", but I'm more surprised about how tumblr didn't purge those posts or ban the user entirely. So, if you see someone with any of these accounts ask you to draw this rat, dump the ask and block em. Though you probably won't listen to me anyway, since apparently in your eyes the word "no" is just an unspoken "yes".

And please don't harass this person or send them death threats. Doing that just makes you a bad person.

I hope this is the last time I talk about this person, because I don't really have the time or the patience to deal with stupid bullcrap like this.

Just another one of those posts where I do a bit of a general update on a few things. This time opening with an edited scan of Maomao from Nekokurage's Kusuriya no Hitorigoto manga adaptation to get your attention. Boo!

I've been reading the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto light novels and enjoying them in the sense that I think preteen me would have liked them. I started reading the LNs earlier this year (as they're great for reading in waiting rooms and the like thanks to their short format) and I think the LNs are definitely my preferred version of the story. The anime has a nice OP theme but is fairly middling otherwise and I don't go much on the art in either mang adaptation (though Nekokurage's art has improved recently and Maomao looks less like a giant-headed baby doll in the Animate bonus cards per my scan above). Maomao is the real draw in all versions so obviously I preordered her Nendo the first moment I could — bring on May 2024!

Speaking of translated light novels you can buy right now, the first part of the Oguni no Koushaku Reijō wa Tekikoku nite Kakusei Suru light novel was just released as A Young Lady Finds Her True Calling Living with the Enemy Volume #1 by Cross Infinite World (see here). It's a solid story that doesn't overstay its welcome and Bertine's business acumen is just *chefs kiss* for those after a competent heroine.

Once the second and final part of this is out, I'd love to see Cross Infinite World pick up another short (but unrelated) PASH! Books publication, Shiitagerareta Shuusai Reijou to Ringoku no Haraguro Kenkyuusha-sama no Amayaka na Yakusou Jikkenshitsu. The web novel version was quite solid but I haven't read the printed version yet. Yeah I like science ladies, what can I say? It would be so good to keep seeing interesting titles for girls and women being picked up for English release because I tire of isekai villainess stories (which imho peaked years ago with Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou) and there are some great little tales out there that do things a bit differently & just need to be shown to the right audience.

I'm so excited for Metallic Rouge in early January! While it used to be that getting an original property from BONES was always exciting, it has been a while since they've created anything I've really cared about but I'm hoping this will break the drought. If a show has Izubuchi, Kawamoto, Yamada contributing then you know I've got to be there. Plus a couple of lady leads in a SF setting? Trailers with some great action and music? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much but I'm keen to give it a shot. If it isn't for me at least I can say I've given it a chance, right?

I've been terrible at sharing the latest about this year's Silent Möbius anniversary, but I'm not a news blogger and frankly very few people care so eh y'know, whatever. BUT I figured I should say something about FAIRYTALE PARFUM releasing scents for the key members of AMP this month (though Mana has been totally forgotten, it seems). You can check out the range here, there will be a launch event on the 10th of December in Shinjuku too.

Asamiya drew new artwork for the bottles and while I'd love to get Kiddy's perfume that nods towards her bodily acceptance in its notes, importing that stuff is just too much of a pain so I've settled for a tiny acrylic stand of Kiddy instead. Sadly there's no option to buy a set of stands so I just went "whatever" and grabbed just my best girl. Anyway, if you'd like a tiny acrylic stand of an AMP girl with extra weird proportions then make sure you check out the FAIRYTALE PARFUM website.

I wrote about this on Twitter, but I might as well post it here too and elaborate.

M. Bison’s hat is in the new SF6 Ed stage and it’s missing the golden Shadaloo emblem. It’s because F.A.N.G took it and wore it as a necklace. For those who read the Feb 2018 three-parter story TOXICITY, it’s been stated that F.A.N.G wanted to revive Shadaloo and M. Bison, in which he thinks the former leader of the organization is not truly dead. He tried to find resources to fund his efforts. Fast forward to late September 2023, F.A.N.G’s plan still tracks as seen from A.K.I.’s arcade mode and by talking to NPC “FANG” Fei in World Tour. F.A.N.G wearing M. Bison’s emblem around his neck is a reminder that he has a purpose to fulfill.

Now you might notice something different with the emblem between the two F.A.N.G illustrations, even though both are supposed to depict the same time frame where F.A.N.G first met A.K.I.. The 2018 version has the emblem clearly drawn with the Shadaloo skull and wing (I don’t know where the other wing went). The 2023 version from the A.K.I. memory art, although highly detailed, the emblem looked simplified. The necklace doesn’t look like a Shadaloo emblem anymore. It only has a vague shape of it. I only noticed this after seeing this gorgeous A.K.I. and F.A.N.G fanart back in the beginning of December of last year:

I take it that the fanartist probably used the A.K.I. memory as reference to draw F.A.N.G. I don’t know if the artist read the Toxicity story. Most people didn’t read it anyway considering how many people thought F.A.N.G died until the A.K.I. dlc dropped.

Anyway, there are some conjectures why the 2023 version is like this. Maybe the artist just wanted to simplify the shape of the emblem because “so and so” reasons, maybe laziness, despite the entire artwork being super detailed in everything else. Another reason could be that they retcon the emblem and have F.A.N.G wear something else.

What do I think? I think the art direction of the 2023 illustration wanted to obscure the image of the emblem because they don’t want to give everything away story wise, which seems most effective towards those who never read Toxicity. The devs probably wanted to save more storytelling for later. That is why in the base game we don’t hear much about Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, nor Akuma, because that’s a story to tell when these characters come out. And from the sounds from the A.K.I. dlc, not everything has been said about F.A.N.G either. A.K.I. didn’t mention about her master’s Nguuhao dagger even though is was written to be a big deal in the Toxicity story. She didn’t even mention about Shadaloo nor Bison in her memories…that is until the avatar has to do a mission for her because she got a message from FANG to look into Shadaloo. Still, she never said Bison’s name. She seems to view these things as tasks for the job. Hmm…it might be no wonder that the emblem looked blurred. All A.K.I. could think of is her life story and F.A.N.G lol. But F.A.N.G for sure likes Bison and OG Shadaloo.

With the reveal of this new stage, it gave people hope that Bison and/or Seth might return in SF6. I don’t doubt that. There are indications for their return and it’s great that people are excited for it.

For me, when I saw Bison’s hat without the Shadaloo insignia, it all comes full circle from the F.A.N.G-centric Toxicity story. F.A.N.G indeed took it and wore it around his neck. It’s only a matter of time when either he or someone else explains about the missing insignia. Because of Bison’s hat on the stage, I now have Sign #14 that F.A.N.G might return playable lololol.

Now let me pour more of my running thoughts here. I have a feeling that F.A.N.G had something to do with the ruined Shadaloo lab. He must’ve placed Bison’s hat on the chair after taking the insignia. The lab equipment seems to be working too. Remember, F.A.N.G was trying to fund the revival project as mentioned in Toxicity. I think this is the result of it.

Sure, it could be someone else who placed Bison’s hat on the chair, but I don’t know who else is as passionate about Bison and Shadaloo other than F.A.N.G himself. Balrog only cares about money and even worked for the Illuminati during SFV. Vega doesn’t seem to care about Shadaloo either and Sagat doesn’t want anything to do with the organization anymore. The Dolls are free and want to live ordinary lives. There are some Shadaloo henchmen that are loyal to Bison from one of Rashid’s missions. Since these lackeys were targeting Rashid, they might be affiliated with F.A.N.G because he’s the one character who has a major grudge against him…but who knows, they might be JP’s allies instead. Though, one could say that Juri Han might’ve set the entire thing up. Revive Bison and finally enacting revenge against him. She always wanted that anyway lol.

Oh yes, hello. Thank you for asking in advance, I guess this is a common question. As someone who ships Lee Hakhyun and Kim Dokja, allow me to state my opinion. There will be a lot of side story spoilers. In my opinion, Lee Hakhyun and Kim Dokja are not the same person. The truth is that Lee Hakhyun is a fragment of Kim Dokja reincarnated, this is true. But that doesn't mean he is Kim Dokja. As in the end of season 1, there was a line saying that the fragments of Kim Dokja are no longer Kim Dokja, they are separate people living their own lives. If Lee Hakhyun is Kim Dokja just because he was the fragment of Kim Dokja, then all the other readers in this story are also Kim Dokja. If KillerKing and Yerin are both Kim Dokja, why are they brother and sister? If uncle Dansu and Jiyoon are both Kim Dokja, why are they father and daughter? Reader Go Jangwon likes reader Koo Sunah, while they are both readers - fragments of Kim Dokja. Isn't that mean Kim Dokja loves Kim Dokja? I think Lee Hakhyun and the reader's struggle in the side story, is to show that the readers are not Kim Dokja, even though they are reborn from Kim Dokja's fragments. Now they have their own lives, they don't have to live in the shadow of someone else, they don't have to sacrifice themselves so that a more perfect version of themselves can survive. The readers and the Kim Dokja we know, they are separate existences. Lee Hakhyun also has the life of Lee Hakhyun. He is 33 years old. He has a father, a mother, an editor who cares for him, readers who like the work he writes, he lives the life of Lee Hakhyun, not Kim Dokja. Regarding the reason why I ship Lee Hakhyun and Kim Dokja, perhaps one of the main reasons is because I believe that they are two different people, with different experiences, different personalities. And secondly, I find them cute. If you have read the side story then you must have seen, how Lee Hakhyun said he wanted to curl up next to Kim Dokja in ep 4, how Lee Hakhyun said he would be fine as long as Kim Dokja continued reading his story. How in ep 12(7) Kim Dokja told Lee Hakhyun “this is your story”. And how Kim Dokja told Lee Hakhyun “Hakhyun-ah, tell me a happy story this time.” You can see, they are two completely different people, with their own loneliness and efforts to take care of and understand each other. In the side story, Kim Dokja is also watching Lee Hakhyun's story, and he felt sad everytime Lee Hakhyun was hurted mentally or physically. Kim Dokja is a reader, and Lee Hakhyun is a writer. In essence, they are already extremely different. Anyway, this is my own feeling when reading the story. I guess everyone has a different perspective when reading, so it's okay. But I hope you can understand what I want to convey. Thank you for reading. I hope you also enjoy the side story. (This is an artwork I made before the side story cover was out, so LHH's hairstyle is webtoon CIH's hairstyle, but anyway, this is one of the conversations between them that I adore the most. Lee Hakhyun was so worried while Kim Dokja just chilling there telling Hakhyun to do whatever he wants, I think they are really precious together.)

AAAAND SCENE! Wow wow! I didn't expect for what was supposed to be another doodle comic...end up with me putting a lot of effort-!

Life got in the way plenty of times- making me take quite a bit to finish this...even contemplating on just putting this on hiatus and just do something else-

...but I did it! I didn't let any discouragement, nerves and bad feelings get to me.

Now I'm sure many are wondering- HOW did this come to fruition? Simple: my friend pointed out that my next comic should focus on Kyurem's involvement in this! Many were wondering what sort of role the old dragon played after the previous comic (Family) and the art piece that accompanied it (The Giant Chasm)! So I went for a more artistic approach to this, making the artwork look like a tale at first, but then shifting to a more crude and cold atmosphere- I was going to polish these last nine pages, yet my friend would tell me that the sketchiness helps with the narrative- and honestly, she was right! Thus I tried to add some subtle sketchiness on pages 7-11 on part one! I wonder if people noticed that detail...? Anyways, time for some fun behind the scenes stuff...!

Here's the very first concept of my Original Dragon design, including his human form!

You can tell I did some adjustments in the final product, but I really wanted to make sure this dragon had characteristics of the tao trio in some way, plus-- I wished for him to have a unique sort of feel- kinda ethereal? I also gave a teeny bit of eastern dragon influence because...well...tao trio. The tail is actually inspired by a plasma engine!

It's why I gave it a bit of a swirl to it- ...kinda reminds me of ice cream- His human design...well, I wished to make sure he looked like the princes yeah-? He is their dad after all! So I made sure to reflect that- Same with his clothing as well! Ah right...I should show the design of our princes yes...?

WHOA WHOA WHOA-- those faces... Hmm... I wonder if people can start piecing together why this au is called the "Twin Princes AU" with this and what was told in this comic...? The design in itself was conceptualized by a rough idea my friend sent me a whiiiiiile back, but asked me to refine it further! Make it fancy, royal, elegant--!! You get the point. XD Though this is the finalized design i came up with as I brainstormed this comic! I hope I could convey how magical yet refined they are! As for Kyurem....oh my! What a reveal as well huh?

Well, there's certainly some familiar design choices...! And another clue to this whole puzzle- unless some of you have figured it out! Let me know through my ask box! ;D

I really didn't expect such a warm reception towards this au me and my pal cooked up last year. To think mixing concepts from our ocverse (GUARDiANverse) with pokemon could work so well...! I suppose fantastical elements mixing with another fantastical setting aint such a bad idea...! This AU has kinda expanded since it's conception... to a point of having other stories of other characters that take place in this version of the pokemon world!

Though for now, I may need a bit of a breather. 20 pages was QUITE the endeavor! Yet...that doesn't mean I wouldn't be opposed to tell more of my tale in other ways! Shoot me an ask, tell me! Who knows, I may answer with a doodle comic! For now, I'll just slowly cook my next idea! Maybe I should give the witness to these tales some spotlight...? I dunno...but honestly, feel free to shoot asks. Well, I hope you all can be patient with me in the meantime!

My Victoria Byng Headcanons (requested by Anonymous)

I am so sorry I took so long but they’re finally here! I really hope everyone likes them. If you want me to write headcanons for another character, you can but please understand they probably won’t come right away. Ideas just don’t always come to mind that easily. I’m already writing headcanons for Sally so stay tuned for that. I’m actually thinking of writing headcanons for Johnny Bolton so let me know if you want that. Anyways, enjoy and have a lovely day!

🥻Before she became a Downer, Victoria had the delusion that her mother was never imprisoned and was currently having a lovely time in India. She does speak of India from time to time and expresses the desire to visit, but thinking of it brings up painful memories. Partially at the behest of her father, she takes an huge amount of Joy to keep them away.

☎️She has lots of friends but is not particularly close to any of them. This is due to both her tendency to be a workaholic and the general shallowness of relationships between Wellies. This is the reason why she did not realize the full extent of Prudence's feelings toward her. Victoria liked Prudence a lot, believing her to be very talented but sadly, their bond was severed when Victoria told Prudence she suspected her of being a Downer. Shortly thereafter, Prudence vanished. After the events of We All Fall Down, I think Victoria would be very sad to hear of Prudence's demise. She's another name in the list of people whose lives were destroyed by Joy and Vicky holds a lot of guilt. Her role in Prudence's death makes it even sadder. I think they would have been good friends or even lovers.

📦Her home used to have artwork, books and memorabilia from India. She loved them but when she looked at them, they made her sad to the point where she started crying. She told her father about this and he gave her tea laced with Joy. He then hired someone to come into her home and take all of the things related to India.

📚Victoria sometimes hosts book club and women's club meetings at her home. Uncle Jack's three books about the war were the subject of some of the meetings. Looking back at this, Downer!Victoria, being a lover of history, would disparage the books as being terribly written and dull.

🤬Unlike the other potty-mouthed protagonists of We Happy Few, Victoria very rarely swears. Both of her parents, especially her aristocratic mother, made it a priority to install grace and elegance in their daughter. It takes an extreme amount of stress (and anger) to make Victoria swear as seen in the cutscene when Ollie forces her off Joy. Also, if Downer!Victoria ever swore, she would hear her mother curtly admonishing her so she refrains from it.

🪅Victoria's favorite Uncle Jack segments are Funny Old Customs and Famous Britons since she likes history albiet the sanitized version of history shown to Wellies. So unsurpisingly it was her idea to bring the piñata on the day Arthur went Downer. But of course since everyone is on Joy and have no idea they're just watching reruns, many many other piñatas have probably been smashed before the one we saw.

🧳In her post-Wellington Wells, I like to think that Vicky got involved in politics in some way or another. She of course has many regrets but her leadership skills would not fade. Also, she was probably a key witness of what happened in Wellington Wells and has written books and given interviews about it. Most survivors prefer to live as if it never happened.

Why Don't You Foodfight...Like Some Other Men Do?

Hey everyone, I just wanted to update this blog real quick to share some art I drew! I rewatched Who Framed Roger Rabbit a while ago, and was shocked by just how many similarities it has to Foodfight!. Despite many people claiming it to be a Toy Story knock-off, I honestly think Foodfight! borrowed far more from Roger Rabbit than anything else. Christopher Lloyd even plays a villain in both movies, and they both share the twist his character is actually somebody else disguised as a human. AND early versions of Foodfight! featured Dex as a human detective in a trenchcoat and hat, just like Eddie Valiant! Although that early version of Dex was clearly paying tribute to Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca- the design looking like a stylized caricature of him, on top of all the Casablanca references throughout the film, I suspect one of the reasons Dex was ultimately changed to a dog in Indiana Jones gear was to avoid the movie straying a little TOO close to what Roger Rabbit did.

Anyway, I just wanted to redraw the famous "Why Don't You Do Right..?" scene from the movie, with Dex and Lady X in place of Eddie Valiant and Jessica Rabbit. After all...Lady X isn't bad, she's just rendered that way. Well, she was a genocidal military dictator who tried to build an army of deadly robotic mosquitos for the sole purpose of destroying thousands of grocery store brand mascots in a misguided attempt at world domination, so actually I guess she was pretty terrible. There's not a whole lot you can do to come back from that... come to think of it actually, was Lady X killed at the end of Foodfight!? Odd question I know, but given the rest of the Brand X characters die at various points during the titular food fight, and Dex tells Dan to "wrap her up and take her to the Expiration Station with the rest of Brand X", was she mercilessly slaughtered offscreen while everyone else was celebrating? I guess there's no way to know and it was probably left vague because it's a children's movie, but I bet if you shot her in the back of the head with a price tag gun she'd go down like a sack of potatoes. Dan is an ice cold son of a bitch too, I bet he'd do it. Mr. Leonard would come into the store the next day and there'd be prunes and detergent all over the floor...

Hi! I really love your timeline analyses and have been thinking about them a lot as I try to write my own Layton longfic. (I hope you don't mind me referencing your timeline and puzzle research for it ^^;) It's very well done! I have a hard time figuring out so many details at once like that, so it's been a huge help.

...I don't want to be annoying or overly nitpicky when I point this out, but I just thought I'd mention something.

We know that Dropstone was founded on August 12th (by the JP version) and Layton travels there on its 50th anniversary (also August 12th). In your deduced timeline you have that arrival date down as Wednesday the 12th, 1963. The year with a Wednesday on an August 12th is actually 1964. In 1963, the 12th falls on a Monday.

I don't know if the day being a Wednesday specifically matters at all, or if Layton's days of the week aren't in sync with ours, but from what I understand, your timeline might be 1 year behind. (Or that date was meant to be Monday the 12th...?)

I figured with SLS (one of my favorite fics ever, by the way!) being in 1953, a detail like this could be important to you, but you can totally ignore this ask if I'm wrong! I just wanted to let you know just in case.

Hi! The fact that you picked up on this is a true testament to your dedication and rigorous work, congratulations!!

I haven't touched this timeline in a long while for a number of reasons (far too many other projects + "um actually I think there might be multiple timelines and you can't put every single game/novel/manga/movie/other in the same chronology but it becomes soooooo much more interesting if you start placing them in multiple ones, also puzzle theory makes that not only plausible but also quite probable"), so sadly I have forgotten most of the details of how past me from over a year ago reached the conclusions that she did. From what I remember, however, the quick answer to your question is simple: yes, the days of the week in the Laytonverse are out of sync with ours.

(I kinda like how I take it as a bigger reminder that the Laytonverse really is disconnected from our world's History in a number of ways, from the mention in the novels of kings and queens that do not exist IRL to the simple logical fact that there is no way History happened the same way when mechas are a thing, the Azran happened, Targent happened, and also puzzles break the laws of physics daily. But that's just personal preference.)

I think what started it was the fact that London Holiday takes place on a Sunday and that I could not find any way to make the whole "a few days ago" for both Curious Village and Diabolical Box work alongside the "They arrive in Dropstone on August 12th." I won't redo the math right now because schedule and to-do list and other stuff (+ I trust you more to check it since your brain cogs are already warm and revving in the middle of it, so you would be more efficient at figuring it out as well as more critical than present me), but if memory serves, this was the best I could manage at the time, and I never went back later to recheck the math. I really just stopped at "Yes, there is a desync, so what? That's not supposed to be the real world anyway. Also huge kudos to whoever notices."

My mind is set on the fact that the Layton timeline places the original trilogy on the year 1963 because of the promotional UF artwork implying that UF would take place during the winter between 1963 and 1964, but that part is personal preference since I know (and stated on the timeline web page iirc) that in-universe, this date does not appear in the game. I know other people use for example the "Year 1960" unused artwork which had been datamined from Curious Village. I also know that the World of PL interview just says "There is no official date, it's inspired from the 1960s but we are never going to give a date because we don't want to." I also also know that some others, who consider the PLvsAA crossover canon, take the Ace Attorney timeline and thus completely yeet the "1960s" part into oblivion.

So the choice is ultimately up to personal preference, and you're free to choose a different one! The only reason I put 1963 in the timeline instead of "Year YYYY ; Year YYYY - 50 ; Year YYYY + 1" and such is for obvious readability reasons... and because past me had not thought that perhaps there could be a Javascript way to say "hey put here the year you'd like the original trilogy to take place in," have the user click on a button, and make the whole page do the calculations and display the new dates according to the user's chosen year of reference. darn it now I'm going to be nagging myself into implementing that but it would also be so tedious.

Anyway TL;DR yes I was aware of this, and past me either forgot to mention it or thought "Eh it's not like anybody will notice/care" hahaha. Rather insensitive from past me admittedly, I do now wonder why I didn't add that as a small paragraph in the preliminary notes... Most likely reason is that the thought just didn't cross my mind at the time.

Good luck on your own longfic, don't hesitate to send me the link (no promises on reading it the day it comes out because there are SO many fics already on my to-read list, but nnngnfhghh I wish I could read other people's works as well as continue working on SLS), and thank you for your ask! Even though I was personally aware of it, you can absolutely feel proud of having picked up on it, and don't hesitate to come back to me (and make me sweat cold bullets) if you figure out a way to make "1963" + "London Holiday on a Sunday" + "No week day desyncs with the real world" work. (Now this paragraph is completely unrelated to your ask, I'm going to leave this here for a different person (or not? would be good luck if you're the same anon): I am so sorry to the anon who asked me if I considered the LMJ ARG event canon or not, I uhhhhh... got carried away and I don't think the answer will be posted anytime soon, because for the sake of answering it in an exhaustive way I wanted to re-read the entirety of what has been preserved of it + add every bit of trivia I could find to the Lore Map mentioned earlier. And I'm juggling between many other projects too so progress is very slow. TL;DR version of my personal opinion so far: as for everything else it is up to personal preference, but I could theoretically see at least parts of it being canon. The trickiest part I found by reading just the introduction of the ARG is the fact that Kat would apparently make livestreams. Which implies the existence of the internet or a similar technology, the existence of streaming platforms, and the fact that she would have a decent-ish enough following for her random viewers from all around the world to want to help her. And if we go with the hypothesis that there could be multiple timelines, I could see that happen in an Ace Attorney-based timeline such as the one in which the PLvsAA crossover is canon, for example! I don't know enough about AA to be able to speak about it with confidence, but I think that 20+ years after the original AA trilogy, internet technology is indeed quite advanced enough for this to be possible? anyway. Just thought I'd give you a first short answer so you don't have to keep holding your breath and/or think I completely forgot about you. I'm sorry :'D)

not a bad thing to ask at all! I've actually been in the middle of writing a guide about this for some time that I will.... hopefully finish sometime soon ghskgh.

I hope you don't mind me posting this publicly - I ended up writing a short novel and figure it might be useful to others who are curious as well! anyways, the advice I give to people with a background in illustration is to start out with a Quest 2 headset. they retail at $300 new, but you can get them used via eBay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace or someplace like that for around $200 or under. the Quest 2 works without needing to be plugged into a PC, though you will probably want to buy a more ergonomic head-strap to make it more comfortable. (the head strap that Meta sells is overpriced, but this third-party one is really good) if you're interested in working with augmented reality (the type of work I do!) and have the ability to save up some extra money, I'd recommend waiting for the release of the Quest 3, which will launch this fall and cost $500. totally not a requirement at all to start learning, though.

other than that, I'd recommend starting out with free art programs like Open Brush and Gravity Sketch to familiarize yourself with creating in-headset. both of these programs have a large amount of tutorial videos up on YouTube - as well as an active community of other artists who are all generally very friendly and eager to help people learn. VR Art Live and The Spatial Canvas's Discord servers are the communities I'm part of. :)

after that, it all just comes down to posting your new artwork online to as many platforms as you can mentally handle (this is the hardest part for me, ghsghs), and also looking at paid XR artist programs/gigs. Mozilla Hubs, Horizon Worlds, and Figmin XR (that's me!) all have some creator opportunities where they pay people to create things on their platform.

you can also find work doing XR concept art, art performances, and I've even seen grant programs for XR artists from art galleries. these things are harder to find, but if you make a LinkedIn page and a modest portfolio of your XR art, chances are high that you'll get some eyes on it.

it's ridiculously easy to be a big fish in a small pond right now if you have any kind of skills with these programs. I will say that there does seem to be a push towards people who can create things that are interactive and can be shared with others (like AR Snapchat/TikTok/Instagram filters, experiences created and published to platforms like Mozilla Hubs, Figmin XR, etc.), so that's something to keep in mind while learning - but not something that should stop you!

going from 2D illustration to creating things in 3D space is a whirlwind of learning new skills that can often feel overwhelming, but the most important thing is that it should feel fun and enjoyable to you. I started out by just listening to music while painting in Tilt Brush (Tilt Brush was the original version of Open Brush, before Google made it open-source) and creating whatever felt the most fun in the moment. everything else just came from natural curiosity and connecting with other artists in the space.

lastly... I have no technical (coding, traditional 3D modeling) skills. I am a 2x college dropout with chronic mental illness, and prior to my current employment I was never able to hold a job for longer than 3 months. and yet....... this new industry has changed my life completely, and at 29 years old I finally feel like I have a purpose. I'm somehow a software developer now, without needing to know anything about software development. that's wild!!!

this is why I'm so excited for the future. if this brand-new technology (still in its infancy! viewed as frightening by so many!!) was able to help me in such a radical way... what will that mean for even more people discovering it as it becomes more accessible?

I don't know the answer to that yet... but I do know how wonderful it is to see people learning about all of this for the first time. helping with that alone is more than enough for me 💖

The Art of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and The Life of Hirohiko Araki

A while back I promised to give a walk through of the Jojo art books I own, and I found myself with quite a bit of free time today, so that's what I'm doing. These art book are... something else. Everybody knows how much Araki's style is influenced by high fashion and pop culture (specifically music), to the point that stands are named after bands, and a lot of illustrations in these books borrow poses and themes from actual photo shoots. But it's far greater than that when you experience it in full. The depth and sheer scale of Jojo's exists on a different level through these references, the locations, the styles, even Araki's comments. It well and truly is the world that Hirohiko Araki inhabits, and I hope I can do it at least the slightest bit of justice in this (not so) little post.

Jojo A-Go!Go!

So, Jojo A-Go!Go! (as well as Jojoveller) are actually collections of books for Jojo. The main/big volumes containing all the major illustrations, while the smaller ones are dedicated to more knowledge than art. With A-Go!Go! we get separate books for the various stands of Parts 3-5, and a volume that explores Araki's past through countless interviews and snippets that I'd love to see officially translated some day.

Regardless, one cool aspect of the A-Go!Go! set is this little wheel featured on the box that contains the volumes. As you can tell, there's a layer behind the circle on the top of the box that you can spin around to align properly, or like I show here, create some funny mix ups.

Anyways, the art. Man, the art. Incredible, just incredible. The book opens with a lot of double spreads that feature groups of characters based on parts or roles within their respective parts, and they all look so good.

Of course, it's not just good art, it's an impressive creative process that captures the best parts of Araki's creativity, with pages like this. I just think it's so cool how they use a cutout page to provide a unique style and experience through the art book. Especially with the bottom image, as you can see stands in the darkness of the pages.

But yeah, an absolutely stunning art book for parts 1-5. Very impactful and strong poses and styles, as expected from Araki.

I really wish that the stands and Hirohiko Araki volumes were translated for this art book. There's so much information and a world of interesting pieces from Araki himself within them. I can read a little bit, but it does take a while, so sadly I can't really translate or explain much either. One day though, I hope Viz or someone else will provide an English version of these art books for English-speaking audiences.

Jojoveller

A rather similar story to A-Go!Go!, Jojoveller is the art book for Jojo parts 6-8, plus a few extras. In addition, it also has a full collection of Jojo stands that's up to date with the release of the art book back in 2013, plus a history book of Jojos. Once again, a huge amount of information, but a lot stuck in Japanese which presents a challenge for NA audiences.

Anyways, the art. There's not much to say besides what I've already said. It's incredible. It's powerful, creative, stylized, unique, so on and so forth. But showing it makes more sense than telling you.

Once more, I love how these art books use translucent or partial pages to create an experience for readers. So very cool.

And here's an example of the extras. Incredibly cool to get the Gucci x Araki artworks at this scale (also cool cause it's Rohan).

These pieces are just so incredible. I'd to try and go through one day and find the real life counterparts for the illustrations that borrow from photoshoots. Just on that topic though, it's incredible that Jojo's has created a feedback loop with it. Borrowing concepts and poses from high fashion and photoshoots to use in its world and story, which people in turn mimic and use themselves.

Jojo 6521

Want the previous two art books but don't want to spend the money, or want to be able to read what's in them in English? Jojo 6521 is the almost answer. It's a condensed version of the two art book collections, condensing the art and information of them into a single book which includes a really interesting breakdown of information by part.

It's not near the same scale of information as the other books, but it's also only one volume at a fraction the page count of the others combined, and it's the only one in English. Sort of a beggars can't be choosers thing, but still quite a bit of cool stuff in it. I think my only gripe would be how plainly the illustrations are put together in this art book, as the vast majority of them are just placed together on a plain white page with each other. But, I think that's counteracted by the new/original material discussed and shown in this volume, with loose character designs and other pieces placed thoughtfully throughout.

And there it is, the Jojo art books I own. I could spend hours looking through all the different illustration and designs that appear in these books. Hell, I could spend a significant chunk of time just looking at the packages/formats that these art books come in (specifically the JP ones). The entire experience of these art books is so incredibly well designed that even though they're very expensive, I'd say for anyone that can afford them and is a Jojo fan, you absolutely need to own these art books.

Red Coat, Red Eye

(Dieter x horror loving female)

Summary: I’m pretty sure everyone has done a Dieter at the Met Gala fic so here’s my version. As usual, it’s cute and wholesome. Also got a bit inspired by this awesome artwork!

Warnings: an unpleasant pregnancy so loads of vomiting but plenty of cute fluffy stuff

The weather may have been starting to warm up, but you were huddled under a protective layer of blankets. The first trimester of pregnancy was not being kind to you. Instead of morning sickness, you were suffering from all-the-time sickness. Your way of coping was curling up in bed or on the couch, wrapping yourself in a blanket and not moving unless absolutely necessary.

Dieter was working a bit more than usual so you wouldn’t have to work when feeling so under the weather. Currently he was in New York to film an ad as well as attend the Met Gala. He didn’t like being away from you and he really did not want to be taking a six-hour flight, but you insisted, and he would only be gone a few days.

You were going to facetime him today before he attended the Gala. Huddled up on the couch, hugging a box of Fruit Loops you put in the call. The screen came to life with a very clear picture of your husband’s nose. “Can you hear me?”

“Yeah, but you need to back up a little bit.” Finally, his face came into frame. “Hi Dieter! Wait, is that a lip ring?”

He touched his painted nails to the new piece of jewellery. “Don’t worry, it’s fake. I may get a fake nose ring put in but anyways, how is my beautiful wife?”

“Not too bad. I wasn’t violently sick this morning so yay!” you weren’t entirely convincing in your delivery.

“Have you eaten?”

“Yes,” your mouth was somewhat muffled by what you were popping into your mouth.

“Are those my Fruit Loops?”

You stopped your chewing, “It’s the only thing I can manage at the moment.” He sighed understandably so you changed the subject, “So how’s New York?”

“The same as last time. I went to that bagel shop you fell in love with and got a baker’s dozen worth which are already packed in my bag.”

“I love you and I want to have your baby.” You looked down at your barely visible bump, “Oh wait, already doing that.”

He laughed, “So do you want to see my Met Gala look?”

“Yeah!” you clapped your hands in eager anticipation. He stood back from the screen, and you could see that he was decked out in black and red.

“Oh, I like that coat.”

“It’s nice and cosy.”

“Do you get to keep that?”

“I hope so.”

“I hope so too.”

He flicked his long red coat back to reveal he was wearing shorts. “Do you like the shorts?” he ran his hands up his hips to emphasise the shorts.

“I do like the shorts.”

“Do you like the legs?” he strut his leg out in a sexy pose.

“I do like the legs.”

“Do you like my slutty little knee?” he bent his knee out in a sexy manner.

“I do.”

His voice lowered, “How about we..?”

You interrupted, “Dieter stop trying to seduce me when I’m eating.”

“It’s not as sexy over screen anyways. But look, I managed to do my tie on my own! Only one take!”

You gave him a little round of applause. “You look very handsome and I’m sure you’ll be the prettiest there.”

“I wish you were here.”

“Do you really want me to travel with you on the six-hour flight while trying not to do my best Regan impression?”

“Okay, scratch that, I wish I was there with you. Then I could be holding you in my arms and making you feel better.”

You were hit in the feels, “Oh, now I wish you were here!”

“I’ll be back in a few days.”

“I know. I think we’ll survive. Will you survive all the people asking about where I am?”

“Well, the plan is to just avoid questions altogether. If I time it right, all I’ll be able to do is show up, flash my slutty knee a bit and run off into the gala.”

“Good plan. Well you have a good night.”

“I’ll try. What have you got planned for tonight?”

“Oh, I’m going to spend a lovely evening with Mike.”

“Mike?”

“Flanagan!”

“You’d totally leave me for him, wouldn’t you?”

“No! Never! It depends.”

You both fell into laughter but that soon trickled into sigh of longing. He pressed his fingers to his lips and touched the screen. You did the same and you said your goodbyes.

The rest of your evening was spent with haunted houses and Fruit Loops. At some point you reached for another handful of sugary cereal but came up with air; you’d eaten the entire box. Disappointed to be without a comfort snack, you went to bed. At some point in the night, your stomach rumbled in a bad way, so you blindly made your way towards the bathroom, but your pathway was blocked by a figure. The shock reached your stomach, and you emptied its contents, and a familiar sound came from the figure in front of you.

“Dieter?!” but you couldn’t ask any more questions and you still had your stomach to empty so you finally rushed to the bathroom and hugged the toilet.

You were too preoccupied to witness the comedy scene that Dieter performed around you. His t-shirt was covered in vomit, so he made his way into the shower to wash it off. But then that made the jeans he was wearing also wet, therefore clinging tighter to his legs. But his socks were also wet so he was slipping around the bathroom, thankfully not falling and causing serious injury. He managed to remove himself from his wet clothing and into something dryer and came back into the bathroom and by then you had completely emptied all contents.

“What are you doing here Dieter?”

“I missed you, so I got a red eye back.”

You sniffed and wiped your mouth, “You didn’t sit next to someone who pulled you into an assassination plot?”

“What?”

“Nothing” you sipped at the water Dieter brought you. “I’m sorry I threw up on you.”

He rubbed your back, “It’s not the first time I’ve been covered in vomit. And good thing I took my new coat off.”

“You got to keep the coat?”

“I think so,” he gave a look that said he probably forgot to ask first before taking the coat, but he shrugged and moved on, “I should’ve known better than to surprise my wife who watches way too many horror films.”

You leaned into his embrace, “I’m glad you’re here.”

“Me too. Now let’s get you back into bed.”

You gladly returned back into the warm embrace of bed which became better with the addition of your lovely warm husband.

“I’m sorry I ate all your Fruit Loops.”

“All of them?” you mumbled an affirmative response.

“That was a big box. No wonder you were sick.”

Peach as Mother Gothel?? And Bowser (Blade) is a thief?? MARIO IS THE KING LOOKING FOR HIS LOST BROTHER? I NEED to know more!!!!

I am actually really excited to hear you say that anon because this ask, this post right here, officially marks the 100th post I've made since joining this site 3.5 months ago! :D (I know it may not seem like much to a lot of people (which is perfectly fine), but to me, this milestone would not have been possible without each and every single one of you taking the time to read my weird Bowuigi ideas & story and liking them enough to where y'all want to ask me questions, follow me, and/or are even inspired by me to make your own fanfic or artwork. 😊❤️)

Anyway, I hope you guys are excited as much as I am for the official first chapter/post of my version of the Bowuigi Rapunzel AU!

So our story begins long, long ago (long before Mario, Luigi, and Bowser were born) in a far away place called the Mushroom Kingdom. And in the Mushroom Kingdom lived a kind, smart, and selfless princess named Peach. Now, to say that Princess Peach was good-looking or cute is a complete understatement. No, Princess Peach was by far the most beautiful princess in the entire galaxy. Hundreds, no, thousands of people from around the world would come visit the Mushroom Kingdom in hopes of getting the chance to see Peach’s beauty, even if it was just for one second. Men would try to ask for her hand in marriage, women would often envy her because of how perfect she was, and children would wish upon the stars every night to be just like her when they grow up.

But everything soon changed when multiple new kingdoms started to form not too far from the Mushroom Kingdom.

Now at first, Peach wasn’t bothered by the formation of all these new kingdoms. In fact, she was actually rather excited about these changes because this created the possibility of meeting new people, whether they were commoners or royalty (for a while, she had often thought about hosting a ball to welcome these new people & kingdoms in hopes of meeting her Prince Charming).

But things took a drastic turn for our dear princess when she noticed her citizens moving out of her kingdom in order to live at these new kingdoms.

And I’m not talking about one or two citizens moving out of the Mushroom Kingdom. I’m talking about hundreds of citizens.

And that…that terrified Peach.

Because she feared that her citizens moving out of her kingdom meant that they didn’t love her anymore.

So with this new fear/realization, Peach started to make some…unsettling changes. Now at first, the changes were pretty small, like guards surrounding the Mushroom Kingdom’s perimeters, but it quickly got way out of hand when she not only started to refuse any kind of travelers from even entering her kingdom, but also required her citizens to have special permission from her in order to even step foot out of the Mushroom Kingdom.

These changes lasted for about 3 months before the Mushroom Kingdom citizens decided that they’ve had enough.

So in the middle of a dark and stormy night, all of the Mushroom Kingdom citizens joined forces and overthrew Princess Peach.

But the citizens didn’t kill Peach, at least not right away. They wanted to make her execution a big spectacle to show everyone that commoners are just as, if not, more, powerful than a royal when they band together as one.

But on the night before her execution, Peach escaped and ran away to a nearby forest.

Now when the citizens found out about the escape, they immediately began their search for the ex-princess. Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks, and weeks even turned into months, but the citizens would always come back empty-handed. It was only when the clock struck the 2nd year since Peach escaped that the citizens eventually gave up on looking for her because they figured that there was no way she could survive from just living off in the forest.

But she did and do you want to know how?

Because not long after she ran away, Peach not only found a tower she could live in, but she also found a gold rose.

A special gold rose that could heal the sick and injured.

So now that we have a really good idea of Peach’s origin story, the next thing is to figure out Mario and Luigi’s origin story (since you can’t have a Rapunzel story without Mother Gothel locking Rapunzel up in a tower for years).

Well lucky for y’all, I actually have a pretty interesting origin story for them as well.

So we start off the brothers’ origin story not long after the citizens pretty much exiled Peach from the Mushroom Kingdom. Now here, this is where they have two options: they could either turn the Mushroom Kingdom into a democracy, or try the monarchy approach again, but have two regular commoners become royals as a way to bring the royals and the citizens closer together.

It was a tough decision, but the citizens eventually chose the latter option.

And do y’all want to know who were the lucky chosen commoners?

It was two of Mario and Luigi’s ancestors.

So we time skip to hundreds and hundreds of years later where Mario and Luigi’s parents are now king and queen of the Mushroom Kingdom. Now here, life is actually pretty good for everyone. The Mushroom Kingdom has quite a few good alliances, the king and queen are beloved by their citizens, everything at that moment in time looked bright for everyone.

Well, not quite.

You see, one of the most difficult challenges the king and queen had to face was having children. Now, it wasn’t that they didn’t want to have a child, they really did, but whenever they would try to conceive, the queen just couldn’t get pregnant.

But on one winter day, life would forever change for the entire Mushroom Kingdom.

Because after countless attempts, the queen was finally with child.

But the kingdom’s happiness would only last for a few months because this is when a plague hits the Mushroom Kingdom.

The first to fall victim to the plague was an old farmer on one spring morning. Now at first, no one was worried about this. Everyone knew that the old farmer had a tenancy to get sick during this time of year, so it wasn’t anything to really be worried about.

However, what surprised everyone was when the old farmer’s wife (who had one of the best immune systems in the entire kingdom) became sick the very next day.

No one was as surprised as the farmer’s neighbor when she found both the old farmer and his wife dead just 24 hours later.

So as you guys can probably imagine, the plague quickly spreads throughout the entire Mushroom Kingdom. All the doctors did everything they could to find a cure for this unknown virus, but none of them were successful.

Things especially took a bad turn for the kingdom when the queen caught the plague 8 months into her pregnancy.

So immediately after the queen caught the plague, the king and the doctors went into high gear of finding a cure. Just a few short days after the tragic event, one of the doctors found an old passage about a golden rose that could heal the sick and injured. While the doctor was unsure on whether the rose still existed, the king didn’t care as he ordered his best soldiers to search for this special rose.

It took the soldiers about one week before they finally found that golden rose. And once they found that said rose, they rushed back to the castle to make the cure for the queen and for the sick citizens.

And after 12 long and painful hours, the doctors successfully made the cure and the queen and all the surviving plagued citizens were cured from the dreaded plague.

So two weeks later, the queen gave birth to Mario and Luigi. However, the thing that shocked everyone was that Luigi, the younger twin, had blond hair. While this confused, and slightly scared, the king and queen, the doctor quickly reassured them that the reason for Luigi’s unique hair color was because of the gold rose. The doctor theorized that the rose’s powers only rooted into Luigi’s DNA because only he was truly affected by the queen’s sickness. Why the sickness didn’t affect Mario, the doctor wasn’t sure.

This did not matter to the king and queen. After trying for years, they finally had beautiful healthy children they could love and cherish and the kingdom had two new princes. It was a wonderful occasion that no one could possibly ruin.

Except for one person.

So on the night of the twins’ birth, Peach broke into the castle and snuck into the twins’ room. She started to sing that special song she had to use before in order to use the gold rose’s powers, and to her surprise and excitement, Luigi’s hair started to glow. Without any hesitation, Peach carefully and quickly cut a piece of Luigi’s hair, but was shocked to discover that the cut hair and the hair piece in her hand turned into a dark brown color.

Peach was really conflicted. She wanted, no, needed, the rose’s powers in order to stay young, but the problem was that it was rooted into Luigi’s DNA.

It was at that moment that she knew what she needed to do.

Without a single hesitation, Peach kidnapped Luigi and disappeared into the night.

It wasn’t until a few hours later that a guard checked in on the princes and realized that Luigi was missing.

As soon as the king and queen were informed, they immediately sent out as many solders as they could to find Luigi and his kidnapper. Hundreds of soldiers scattered across the lands in hopes of finding the lost prince, but as weeks turned into months and months turned into years, there were no clues or leads on Luigi or Peach’s whereabouts.

But unbeknownst to everyone, hidden deep in a nearby forest was a hidden tower.

A tower where Peach raised Luigi as her son.
