Star Crossed Lovers
Summary: Buck has been into Eddie for years, he assumed his feelings were reciprocated, just the timing was always wrong. However, Eddie begins to date Ana and Buck begins to distance himself and begins to move on after meeting reader when Ana was expected to be introduced to the firefam
Word Count: 2128
Eddie had started to date Ana Flores and for some reason he was hesitant to introduce her to his family and the 118, he knows it probably has something to do with the way his heart flutters around Buck but he needs to think about Christopher and how his mom had reminded him that Chris needs a mother. He knew Ana was getting impatient and wanted to meet those close to him. He also started to notice that Chris seemed to get sad. Chris also stayed hidden in his room on Fridays and it was because Eddie would cancel Movie Night with Buck so that Ana and Chris can bond but Christopher seems to not want to bond with her. Ana told Eddie it might help if Chris sees that she is here to stay by having her meet the 118.
The day before the monthly BBQ at the Grant-Nash house Eddie looks at everyone sitting at the table eating, "Hey I'll be bringing Ana tomorrow is that ok?" Everyone looks shocked, they assumed the reason Eddie hadn't brought her over was because they weren't serious and Eddie would soon realize he is in love with Buck. Bobby is the first to recover and quickly looks at Buck who just continues to eat but looks down at his food, "yeah Eddie, she's welcome to come" and Hen and Chimney glare at Bobby while Eddie pulls out his phone to text her. Suddenly Buck gets up and leaves the loft, before anyone can follow him the bell rings. Since Christopher hangs out with Buck during the Ana/Eddie dates, Buck and Chris talk. Chris admits that Ana treats him like a baby and he doesn't like her but his dad won't listen and keeps trying to force them to have movie nights together. Buck also tells Chris that with Eddie and Ana becoming so serious, Buck won't be around as much as he used to but he'll always be a phone call away. Christopher understands, he knows Ana doesn't like his Buck, he heard her complain over the phone with her friend about how Buck is always there and the more her and Eddie date the more she is going to convince him to stop bringing Buck home.
The day of the BBQ Christopher is done getting ready and walks to the living room where his dad is waiting for him, "we need to go pick up Ana and then we will head over" Eddie explains and Chris just sighs and walks out the door. Eddie is able to tell Chris doesn't like Ana but he really hopes tonight will change that, maybe if he sees Buck accepting her he will too. Eddie feels a pit in his stomach though at the thought of Buck and Ana meeting each other. He kind of hopes they won't get along but he also knows he needs them to if he wants Ana to stop mentioning that he should stop hanging out with Buck. After picking her up they arrive at the Grant-Nash house and walk in. Right away Christopher goes over to Harry and Denny where they begin to whisper and all three boys glare at Ana, the adults not knowing that Buck had texted Chris and informed him that he won't be able to make it tonight. Chris knows it's because of Ana. Eddie notices the adults are all sitting and have their plates ready, "you're late" Athena chastises him. Eddie looks down, not wanting to explain it's because Ana took forever to get ready because she had to make a dramatic appearance. Eddie gets himself and Ana plates and sits down, he notices Buck isn't there and gets upset so he sits next to Karen. "Everyone meet Ana my girlfriend, Ana meet Karen, Hen, Chimney, Maddie, Athena, and Bobby" Eddie introduces. They all are pleasant with her but Eddie is able to tell they don't like her, especially Athena and Maddie who can't seem to stop glaring at Eddie for some reason. He is itching to text Buck and ask why he's late but he knows Ana will get irritated. After a bit of conversing he takes the plunge and asks, "where's Buck", everyone looks shocked, assuming Eddie would be the one to know. Chris who was sitting and eating with the other two boys hears his dad and says "he's not coming" before turning back to his friends. Everyone but Eddie (even Ana who can tell Buck's in love with Eddie) know the reason Buck isn't there is because he couldn't handle the heartache of seeing Eddie in a serious relationship. Karen decides to change the topic of conversation.
Meanwhile Buck is at the grocery store, buying ingredients so he can make Eddie's abuela's chicken soup, his new comfort meal. As he's going through the isle he accidently bumps carts with another person. "Oh I am so sorry" the person apologizes, turning to look at Buck. Buck immediately finds this person comforting and beautiful, "oh no my apologies!" They look at Buck and can tell something is wrong, "I know we don't know each other but how about we go get some Mexican food, you look like you need a friend", Buck looks shocked but ultimately agrees.
After the BBQ and grocery store day, Buck had told everyone (but Eddie) about Y/N, the quirky woman he met and how they were getting closer. Everyone was happy that he was beginning to move on. Chris could also tell there was something different about Buck but he didn't ask because nothing about them changed. He still made sure to make his dad drop him off at Buck's every weekend that Buck didn't work. Eddie was struggling, Ana wanted to make things more permanent by wanting to move in but he kept dodging it. He could also tell that Buck was talking to him but there was a distance between them now. They no longer basically sat in each other's laps, they no longer had lingering touches, they no longer hung out together after work. It was driving Eddie insane because he needed Buck in his life and although he knew he'd never have Buck in the way he wanted because Chris needs a mom, he still hoped they would still be close but it was beginning to seem like that was not the case.
----------------------
"We haven't had a day at the zoo, just you, me and Chris, so I expect us to go tomorrow, see you at 8am" Eddie tells Buck in the locker room on a Friday, it's been weeks since he's been with Buck in a nonwork related way. Ana had told him that he needed to prioritize her and he agreed because he knew he loved Buck but had to give Christopher a mother. Buck sighed, "You sure you want to come?" He asked surprised, he was planning on taking Christopher to a brunch place Y/N had introduced him to, so that Chris and Y/N could finally meet. He'd talked to both previously and they were both excited to meet each other. Chris was nervous about meeting Y/N because he was afraid she'd take his Bucky from him but Buck told him Y/N knew and accepted that Chris came first. Eddie nodded and walked away.
*Next morning*
As Eddie was getting everything ready for when Buck came to pick them up, Ana walked in, she was still trying to convince him to move in together but he was still saying no, he knew the moment he said yes, he would absolutely lose Buck forever. "What are you doing here?" Eddie asked surprised, before she could answer Chris walked out, excited for his day with both Dad and Buck, he missed these. As soon as he saw Ana his smile was wiped of his face, "I thought Ms. Flores wasn't coming" Chris asked, and Eddie knew in this moment that maybe Ana wasn't the best option for Chris. Maybe everyone had been right in telling him to follow his heart. He thought with time Chris would come to love Ana but the fact that he refused to stop calling her Ms. Flores and refused to spend time with her was a major red flag. After the BBQ Bobby had admitted that when he was talking about moving on, on the q word day, he was actually talking about Buck. Now though, he noticed that no one talked about Buck in his presence, when he was at work, it was all professional, he was losing his family thanks to his attempt to make his parents proud. He decided that after the zoo he would convince Buck to have Chris sleep over so that he could break up with Ana tonight. After, he would come clean with Buck about why he started to date her and admit that he actually loves Buck. "Where are we going" Ana asked happily, while also going to help Chris with his shoes even though he didn't need the help. "Buck and I are taking Chris to the zoo" Eddie tells her firmly, she looks at him with her lips pursed, clearly upset. "I thought we were going to take Christopher to the zoo next weekend" she asked. "NO THE ZOO IS FOR ME AND BUCKY" Chris yells and walks back to his room. "Maybe he shouldn't spend so much time with Evan" Ana told Eddie for the millionth time, she also refused to call him Buck, because "it's childish". Eddie sighed. Suddenly, Chris walked out of his room with his phone and handed it to his dad, "it's Buck, he wants to talk to you" and then walked back to his room. Eddie grabbed the phone, "hello" he asked confused, wondering when Buck would arrive to pick them up. "Chris mentioned Ana is coming? I figured we could just meet at the zoo instead then. I'm about to head over there instead since I was almost at your place, see you soon" is all he says before hanging up. Eddie gets upset, he was looking forward to finally being in Buck's jeep again like old times. Great, he muttered. "You're not coming, today is all about Chris and Buck. You and I will have dinner at around 8pm" is all Eddie says to Ana, she smiles thinking it's going to be a good night, in their many months dating, they've only slept together about 3 times, but she was patient, she didn't know it was because he felt like he was cheating on Buck. Eddie goes to Chris' room and explains it's just the 3 of them and that they would meet Buck at the zoo, which didn't lift Chris' spirit much.
When Eddie and Chris finally arrived at the zoo, at the entrance they noticed Buck was talking with someone, Eddie immediately got jealous. Buck spots them and frowns, wondering where Ana was. "Chris buddy! I have a very important friend here who's been wanting to meet you forever" Buck tells Chris. Y/N hugs Chris right away, "Christopher it is so nice to finally meet you! Listen, Buck told me about your fears but just know that if he EVER tries to put me before you, I will leave him right away! You come first! Also we're not official yet because I need to make sure I have your approval, so after the zoo just let me know if you approve or not and be completely honest, ok buddy" she tells him truthfully, which Chris likes, so he can tell he'll get along with her right away. "Oh Eddie, you haven't met Y/N yet, Y/N this is Eddie" Buck introduces his 2 partners. Y/N knows all about Eddie and Buck's unrequited love. She also knows he's finally healing and moving on from Eddie. Eddie gets jealous, has Buck found someone? When did this happen. "When did you meet" he can't help but ask. Buck gets flustered, he knows the moment he tells Eddie, Eddie might figure it out. "The day I didn't show up at the Grant-Nash get together, when you wanted to introduce Ana to all of us" he says.
That's when Eddie's world collapses. He realized the reason Buck didn't show up was because of the heartbreak of seeing Eddie with someone else, that same heartbreak Eddie is having by seeing Buck with someone. Eddie pushed Buck into the arms of someone else that unfateful day. Here Eddie was hoping to have a fun day at the zoo with his boys with the promise of tomorrow professing his love for Buck and asking him on a date, only to find out Buck has slowly began to move on from him after Eddie made his relationship with Ana serious by introducing her to the team.

Eddie never “comes over” anymore. He hasn’t in some time. On second thought, I don’t think they have much at in non-emergencies aside from after the Tsunami and when Maddie was smothering Buck. I mean there may have been some other times but that’s one other thing that just DISTINGUISHES them from any other friends on the show. It’s one thing to parallel them to couple but I find it much more pertinent how they are oriented as something not quite friends.
Buck and Eddie don’t “come over”. They’re just there. In 309, Eddie is always there and it’s a little surprise that Christopher is too. In 511, we cut back to Eddie at home and he’s eating dinner with Buck and Christopher (and by extension Taylor). In 518, it cuts to Buck helping Eddie patch his walls. In 601, it cuts to them all having dinner. In 613, it cuts to their little homework session AND LATER to Buck and his sous-chef Christopher.
They always explain away the presence of others. Eddie knocked on Bobby’s door in 511 and 518. Karen came to Chimney when she thought Hen was cheating. In 613, Bobby and Athena came through the Buckley-Han’s door. They always show us, even if we could have gathered from Chimney inviting them why Athena and Bobby were there - or even if he hadn’t invited them onscreen, the conversation would have provided context. But they chose to show us because they are entering someone else’s home, space, and bubble.
That isn’t the case with Buck, Eddie, and Chris. Nobody needs to know how they got there. Who cares if they came in the door or climbed in through the window? They are treated as an established presence in each other’s homes. It doesn’t cut to a scene in which one of them comes over. (partially, I think, because the other consistency with all those other scenes was that those friends came over for some greater plot reason so their presence and appearance needed to be emphasized. No need to emphasize when they’re just there because they want to be). It just cuts to them. They’re just there.
No one asks questions. That’s exactly why they do it. Because they’ve established them in such a way that they know no one would be confused as to how or why they all got together is here. They’ve made it as casual as all other groups who live together in the way they just cut straight to a character already with their go-to person to talk to about any given situation they need to talk about. Like emulating the forced proximity of living together and the casualness of how conversations arise that way by establishing that they were already together before this conversation topic was brought up.
They establish that they were already there before they were talking about this plot pertinent thing. They make it clear by not starting with one of them appearing at their door that they enjoy each other’s company for no plot related reason at all. They may have been hanging out for hours before this. Eddie did not come over to talk to Buck about this (whatever it is). Maybe he wanted to, but their “visits” never have a purpose. It’s just to enjoy each other’s company as frequently as possible.
Even the ending cooking scene cuts to Chris already there with Buck. They decided that it wasn’t pertinent information to know where Eddie was/why he wasn’t there like it would be with, say, Jee-Yun, historically. Maybe Eddie dropped him off to spend vague, non-purposed time with Buck. (shared custody vibes: this is your Buck time). It even leaves the idea open that Eddie could have been there then left with Buck promising to take him home later. That’s what it is here. It doesn’t even feel like a “play-date” of any kind. This one on one stuff feels like shared custody between two households.
He didn’t go over because they planned to cook together. That was just his Buck time. They didn’t come over because they planned for Buck to help Christopher cheat, maybe for Buck to help Christopher with his homework but his miraculous skill doesn’t lend itself to explanations very well and even Eddie shut down the idea. That was just their family time.
tldr: All the friends in the show have plot purposes and objectives in going to each other’s homes and when they go to one another’s homes, the scene starts with a knock at the door. Buddie, however, are paralleled to the other couples or families that live together by rarely doing this. Instead, it cuts to them, establishing that they were already there just to be there before any plot pertinent thing came up. They frame their presence in each other’s homes as a natural base state from which to talk about or do plot pertinent things rather than somewhere you go when/for something plot pertinent to happen. They shoot them in a way that is almost an attempt to convince the audience they live together by showing them as established presences in one another’s homes - part of one another’s “bubble”s (aka families).

Mads, I've been Autistic about what breed(s) of dog the FireFam could be and even if you don't like interact w this post I just would like to make you laugh- I may have to post multiples b/c there's A Lot. Ok, so, Bobby is a yellow lab a la Shadow from Homeward Bound and I will die on that hill. Athena is, obv, a Dobie- she's stunning, but a softy for her family but she also makes smiling look like a threat. (1/?)
Thank you for your patience dear I was rushing to finish the F&F AU and was also rather busy this weekend in general. I'm including your other three asks here as screenshots and this all is going to get a bit long so I'm putting everything below a cut to spare people's dashes!
FIRST OF ALL, HOW DARE YOU. HOW FUCKING DARE YOU.
SHADOW FROM HOMEWARD BOUND!?
Tumblr media
I'M GOING TO DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS.
WHEN THE KID IS LIKE OH MAYBE HE WAS TOO OLD AND THEN SHADOW APPEARS BECAUSE HE'S GOING TO COME HOME TO HIS BOY NO MATTER WHAT!!!! G O D
I NEED TO BE SEDATED!!!!
Ahem.
Tumblr media
STICK A LITTLE CROWN ON HER AND CALL HER ATHENA!
I babysat for a family that had a Doberman and he was truly a sweetheart. So protective of me and would stay glued to my side while I was there. "A softie for her family but makes smiling look like a threat" is soooooo Athena.
Tumblr media
oh my GOD I'm DYING
Tumblr media
Look at this baby. Pure fucking ADHD right here. *pats puppy* This guy can fit SO much anxiety and innate need to be of use in him!
I'M FUCKING HOWLING OVER EDDIE. LOOK YOU'RE NOT... YOU'RE NOT WRONG ABOUT THE CORGI COMMENT. THERE ARE TEARS IN MY EYES. BUT.
Tumblr media
This is still Eddie in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Someone send that bit about Chim to Kenneth Choi I think he'd find it hysterical.
Tumblr media
BEHOLD. CHIMNEY HAN. Look at those EARS.
I also personally could see Chim as a greyhound or a whippet.
Tumblr media
Chim's just got this fastness about him that makes me think of that kind of dog. Is this me remembering how he literally just SPRINTED away from Albert while playing basketball because he panicked about lying? Maybe. You can't prove anything.
I had to remind myself what a Chow Chow is and OHMYGOD IT'S SO FLUFFY???
Tumblr media
However I always saw Hen as a Great Pyrenees.
Tumblr media
These things will fuck you UP. They're flock dogs but not in the Border Collie sense. They don't herd. They kill the predators that try to go after the flock. They will chase down the wolves and destroy them. And they are super super SUPER protective of and gentle with kids. They ADORE kids. So that's my two cents there!
Tumblr media
Ohmygod Maddie is SUCH a Border Collie.
Tumblr media
INCH resting that you say Standard Poodle for Karen...
Tumblr media
Poodles are actually what my mom grew up with and she's always talked about how smart and wonderful they are, she's owned three in her lifetime and adores them. I know they kinda have this stereotype of being snooty but I think they're great and they ARE so fucking smart holy shit. They're smarter than some humans I've met.
However. Chris.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna have to fight you (lovingly) on this one, Nonny.
I will say that when I googled this dog I laughed so fucking hard my ribs hurt. I CRIED.
They are very cute as puppies!
Tumblr media
However. I must counter-argue and say that Christopher is...
Tumblr media
AN ENGLISH CREAM DACHSHUND
*sobbing* look at how CUTE it is!!!!!
Tumblr media
*continues sobbing over the cute*
Anyway thus concludes the nonny's opinions, and mine! I had a good laugh over this series of asks, thank you nonny. I hope you had a good weekend.

wrote this on wednesday then promptly forgot about it (thabk @danielsousa for reminding me) but there's like a tiny chance eddie could be trapped in that van with someone so the bones of this fic could still technically apply
Eddie makes it out alive. Again. Somehow.
(Except somehow is 6ft2 and looks a lot like an angel when the last piece of rubble falls away and the light filters into what Eddie had thought would be his grave.)
Eddie makes it out alive, but Joel isn't so lucky.
He had been on a motorbike when the first crash had happened, in critical condition before the bridge had collapsed. It had taken them far too long to extract him from the cluster of cars, and then, when they'd finally gotten him ready to transport, the bridge had swallowed both Joel and Eddie whole.
It had been a long two hours of trying to keep Joel from bleeding out, but eventually he'd lost the fight and the man had taken in one final, wheezing breath before going still.
Now, Eddie's staring into a hospital mirror covered in dust and another man's blood. The bathroom door creaks open, and Buck's reflection appears in the mirror.
"Chim's okay," he offers softly. Eddie squeezes his eyes shut in relief, its the most Buck is going to get out of him. "Maddie's just waiting for him to be assigned a room and then she'll go up and sit with him until he's awake." Buck joins him by the sinks, turning the faucet on and grabbing a wad of paper towels. "Hen and Bobby have been checked out too. Nothing but a few scrapes and bruises. Karen and Athena are looking after them."
Buck picks up Eddie's bloodied hands with a gentleness that makes Eddie want to curl up in a ball, but he lets Buck wipe away the grime on his skin and doesn't think about Maddie with Chimney, Athena with Bobby, Karen with Hen. He catches the bandage peeking out from under Buck's shirt sleeve and his stomach clenches.
"What about you?" he croaks, voice hoarse from begging Joel to stay with him. Buck looks up at him with earnest eyes before following his gaze down to the gauze.
"Oh, that's nothing." Buck shakes his head. "Chim needed a blood transfusion, and..."
"You're a universal donor," Eddie mumbles to himself. Buck nods.
"How are you?" he whispers, guiding Eddie's hands under the lukewarm stream of water. Eddie fixes his gaze on the pink liquid swirling around the drain.
"Unscathed," he spits.
"Eddie," Buck murmurs. "You did everything you could for him."
"It wasn't enough."
Eddie jerks his hands out of Buck's grasp, pumps three drops of soap onto his palm, turns the heat up to full and scrubs and scrubs and scrubs. Buck shuts the tap off just as the water begins to burn, and Eddie slumps into a white-knuckled grip on the edge of the counter, squeezing his eyes shut and hanging his head.
"He had a kid at home, Buck." Eddie bites his lip, revels in the gritty taste of dust. "A little girl. Jackie. God, you should have seen his face when he spoke about her." Even in the darkness, even in tremendous amounts of agony, Joel had lit up like the fucking sun when he spoke of his daughter. For a single moment, Eddie had been back in the well, fighting to get home to Christopher.
"And I know that you did everything in your power to try and get him back to her," Buck says with conviction.
"Well, it wasn't enough, was it?" Eddie snaps. "He died in my care, Buck. I let a little girl lose her father."
"Eddie, that was not your fault," Buck warns him, tone stern. "The universe was working against you in every possible way."
"The universe!" Eddie laughs coldly, meets Buck's eyes in the mirror. "The universe has been working against me my whole goddamn life, Buck. But I'm still here." His voice cracks, but he doesn't take his eyes off Buck. Can't. "Why am I still here?" Buck opens his mouth, but Eddie doesn't want an answer as much as he wants to spit in the universe's filthy fucking face. "Shannon died, my convoy died, Joel died. You died." Eddie takes in a ragged breath, cursing the oxygen in his lungs. "Why am I still alive?"
"Because there is a little boy, who's not all that little anymore, waiting for you at home. A little boy who loves you more than anything in the world. A little boy who needs his dad."
"Wasn't enough for Joel," Eddie croaks.
"No, but." Buck sighs. "You made Chris a promise. To always fight to come home to him. You were just keeping that promise."
"He had a wife," Eddie whispers. "A wife and a kid to get home to. And he fought for them. But..." He squeezes his eyes shut again. "Why am I still here, Buck?"
"For Christopher."
"Christopher would be fine." Eddie shakes his head in dismissal. "He'd have you."
For a moment, the only sound in the bathroom is Eddie's ragged breathing and the drip-drop of a leaky faucet. Then, a low and furious noise, like the grumble of thunder -
"Eddie, you are not expendable."
Eddie huffs a laugh and shakes his head.
"Clearly not," he snaps, spinning around to face Buck head on. "Clearly I'm not expendable when everybody around me, everybody but me keeps dying."
Eddie storms out of the bathroom before Buck can say anything else. The itch under his skin turning into a haunting chorus telling him to run. He follows the winding hallways of the hospital in a blind need for air, suddenly claustrophobic trapped in between four walls, just waiting for it all to come crumbling down around him. He doesn't stop until he's outside, collapsing onto the bench just left of the exit as the tears start to fall. He hunches in on himself and cries into his hands for what feels like hours.
Eventually, somebody eases down onto the bench beside him. He doesn't have to look to know its Buck, can feel it in the warmth where their shoulders touch. Eddie braces himself for whatever Buck is going to say, but nothing comes. Buck just. Sits beside him. Sits with him in his grief. And Eddie is so thankful for it that he almost doesn't remember Bobby's words to him in the hardware store.
a motorcycle accident... it was a bad one... I wasn't at my best at the time... I needed to take a minute and she sat with me.
"Eddie, you said it yourself." Buck smiles at him. "Experiences like this they change us, so you're gonna have to make a choice. What's this gonna change in you?"
Oh, Eddie thinks, that's what its going to change.

The 118 talking about Micheal’s cancer treatment. Which leads to a conversation about Albert, Chimney’s brother. Everyone being excited to meet Albert. Hen making appoint about found family.

Maddie, Chim, Josh, and Buck playing poker. Buck is terrible at poker. Josh points out that if he didn’t know any better, he would have thought they were trying to set up Josh and Buck together.
Buck just smiles and Maddie says she wouldn’t do that to Josh, she likes him too much. Buck is slightly offended at that comment. Josh and Buck start to bond over how hard dating is and putting yourself out there.
My personal head cannon for Buck is that he is bisexual. He’s not closeted, just doesn’t feel the need to announce that about himself. I like to believe he had a boyfriend in high school that Maddie knew about. It could explain why neither one of them bat an eye at Josh’s comment about being set up. The way Buck was sitting there with the biggest grin on his face, after Josh made that comment, best believe he was flattered by the thought.
Eddie and Carla are at parent teacher conference. The science teacher mentions how Christopher keeps telling his classmates that tsunamis aren’t a big deal.  The meetings are pretty miserable up until we meet the English teacher, Ana. Ana is extremely beautiful and Eddie noticed that.
Ana letting us know that Christopher is funny and very popular in class.
Carla low key trying to be a great wing woman. Carla calling Eddie out on his little crush on the teacher.
Eddie lashing out at Ana because Christopher got hurt while trying to ride a skate board. Eddie being pissed off and takes Chris home, even though Christopher wanted to stay in school.
Carla explaining to Eddie that he needs to have a conversation with Chris about his limitations. Chris revealing that it was his idea to try to ride the skateboard.
Shitty Date; Eddie talking to the victim, asking if she was trying to escape a bad date.
Buck breaking down the bathroom door. While trying to get the woman unstuck from the window and she talks about how hard dating is. Buck proceeds to tell everyone, Eddie’s business of how he ruined any chances he may have had with Chris’ cute English teacher.
Buck and Eddie drinking at Buck’s place discussing Eddie and Chris’ most recent fight where Chris called Eddie a liar. Buck telling him a story about a one-armed Pitcher and how nothing is impossible.
Chris not wanting to go to school because he’s still embarrassed about the skateboard incident. Eddie having a one on one with Chris and explaining that no one can do everything. He talks about how he may have to do things differently but that he can’t be afraid of trying something new.
Chris roasts Eddies cooking skills. Eddie tells us he has a black thumb and can’t keep plants alive.
Eddie apologizes to Ana for lashing out on her. Ana gives him a metaphor about falling off a horse and how it may not be the right horse. The conversation being geared toward how Chris may not be able to ride a skateboard but could end up writing a book. There is an underlying tone in their conversation about dating.
Buck and Carla help surprise Chris at the skatepark. Eddie and Buck pushing Chris on the skateboard contraption they created. Chris having the time of his life. Cute family moment.
Episode 13: Pinned
Bowling Ally Crushed Arm: Eddie and Buck are in the background walking in the gurney.
Eddie and Buck hop on top of the machine to observe the situation and come up with possible solutions. Buck coming up with keeping the arm braced with the device. Everyone a little surprised by that.
Buck is welding the piece off. Eddie is standing nearby, watching from above with no protective gear.
Buck and Eddie guiding the victim’s arm out. As they walk out of the bowling alley, Buck is celebrating/joking around. Eddie rains on his parade a little. It’s light hearted in banter.
Chim, Hen, and Eddie are discussing Chim’s relationship with Maddie. Eddie telling Chim that who cares about what Albert thinks. Eddie also being the one to ask if he loves her. Eddie laughing when Chim says they are taking it slow.
Buck interrupts the conversation for line up.
Before Chim walks out the locker room, Eddie stops him and states, “tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, if you love her, tell her.”
Nail Gun to the Heart: Buck secures the “weapon.” Eddie tries to reassure victim that this surprisingly happens a lot.
Buck and Eddie standing closely together, like a foot apart.
Buck and Eddie closing the ambulance doors together.
Buck and Eddie walking pressed against each other to open the ambulance doors. They are talking about getting lunch.
These men do not know how to exist in a space and not be a foot from each other.

had an absolute Breakdown about buddie and a sunday kind of love by etta james yesterday so i wrote this. have there already been a million spec fics about 5x18??? yes but i needed to write eddie having a feelings realisation to this song and, well, it is sunday today so...it felt fitting 🤍
technically spoilers for 5x18 but not really (i wish this was a spoiler asjdfh)
-
Eddie leans against the bar, gaze sweeping the dancefloor in front of him. Hen and Karen are at the centre of it all, wrapped up in each other’s arms as they sway back and forth, and he’s pretty sure the rest of the guests could disappear and they wouldn’t even notice. He’s always been a little in awe of their relationship but today it really is something remarkable to behold.
Bobby and Athena glide past him then, murmuring to each other as they dance and not missing a step. There’s a sly grin on Athena’s face and he knows Buck thinks their flirting is gross but Eddie’s always liked the fact that they can still have fun together. No one’s ever made him believe in second chances the way they do.
He spots Chimney asking Maddie to dance a few tables over and grins to himself when she lets him lead her to the dancefloor, full of tentative hope. He thinks they’re pretty good at second chances too.
Something bittersweet and yearning fills his chest as he watches them – his friends, his family, held in the arms of their partners – and he’s not even sure what he’s longing for but he-
“How come we’re the two that always end up at the drinks table at every team get together?” Buck appears beside him, slouching against the bar and knocking his shoulder into Eddie’s.
“I don’t think this can exactly qualify as a team get together,” he points out, smirking when Buck rolls his eyes.
“Whatever. Half the firehouse is here. Athena’s here. My sister’s here. Everyone’s kids are here. We might as well be in Bobby and Athena’s back yard.”
And he’s got Eddie there.
Eddie casts a sidelong glance in Buck’s direction, watching him watch the dancefloor. His mouth quirks a little at the corners when he seems to notice Maddie and Chimney before settling into a softer smile as he tracks Hen and Karen.
“How’re you holding up?” Eddie asks, oddly nervous for Buck’s response. It’s only been a few days since Buck and Taylor broke up and, as much as Buck loves love, it’d make sense if it being surrounded by it today is getting him down.
When he looks at Eddie though his expression is warm and open. “I’m okay. Honestly, watching Hen and Karen today- it made me feel even more sure that I was right to end things.” He looks back out on the dancefloor and Eddie sees some of his own longing reflected in Buck’s eyes. “I was never gonna love her like that.”
He says it quietly, distractedly, with a hint of a rueful smile thrown in Eddie’s direction.
Eddie hums. He gets that. He never could’ve loved Ana like that either. “To answer your earlier question, we always end up here because we made the mistake of befriending couples.”
Buck snorts out a laugh, shaking his head. “Yeah, well, I don’t wanna dance with someone anyway. I’d rather spend time with you.”
Eddie’s chest fills with warmth, a kind of fizz beneath his skin that he only ever really associates with Buck. He opens his mouth to say something – return the sentiment, maybe, if he’s brave enough – when the clack of familiar crutches interrupts him.
“Buck,” Christopher calls out as he approaches. “Can you show me, Denny and Harry where you got those cupcakes earlier? We can’t find them.”
Buck chuckles, raising his eyebrows at Eddie in a ‘duty calls’ kind of way before turning to Chris. “Sure, buddy. Let’s go.”
Eddie watches them go, calling out a half-hearted, “Just one, Chris!” that earns him a long-suffering, “Da-ad!” and a laugh from Buck. He’s not on his own for very long before May fills Buck’s empty spot.
“Having a good time?” she asks and he nods.
“The ceremony was beautiful,” he says. The truth is he’d had a lump in his throat the entire time. When it’d come down to it it’d been a simple affair but there’d been something so honest and real in Hen and Karen’s vows he’d almost felt breathless. “Your mom tells me you finally made a decision about Dispatch?”
May lets out a breath, a half-nervous, half-excited smile on her face. “After consulting just about every single person in my life for their opinion, yeah.”
Eddie huffs a laugh. “Sometimes it helps to get some outsider perspective.”
“Sure,” she scoffs. “That’s what we’ll call it.”
She looks at him then, expression scrutinising. “What about you? Did you figure out what you wanted?”
Eddie thinks about it before he answers. Thinks about his trip to Texas last week and all the yelling. Thinks about the moment he’d reached the Arrivals area in the airport and found Buck and Christopher waiting for him with a “Welcome Home!” sign. Thinks about having Buck’s arms around him and how it’d felt more like a homecoming than stepping through his front door had. Thinks, for just a moment, about what it would feel like if he and Buck joined the other couples on the dancefloor, hands clasped and temples pressed together.
He looks out over garden again and finds him easily. Denny and Harry are distracted by their dessert but Christopher is laughing hysterically as he shoves a cupcake in Buck’s face while Buck squawks out in protest, pretending to bat his hands away.
And suddenly, the words of the song playing through the loudspeaker are all he can hear over guests’ chatter and the clinking of glasses.
Etta James is singing about looking for a love for all her life to have and to hold, Buck is playing with their kid, and Eddie finds himself nodding. As if sensing he’s being watched, Buck looks up and catches his eye, beaming bright and beautiful even with frosting all over his face. Eddie smiles back instinctively, involuntarily, like he doesn’t know how any other way to look at Buck.
(He doesn’t.)
“Yeah,” he murmurs, breath caught somewhere in his throat as anticipation makes his heart thump heavier in his chest. “I know what I want.”

Background on Buck’s breakdown #3 of ?: Almost losing the people he loves
Buck rescues victims while he’s at work because he’s a firefighter and that’s part of his job.  However, if someone Buck loves is in danger, he doesn’t just rescue them, he saves them (related post: Rescuing people vs Saving someone he loves).  Buck saved Maddie, Christopher and Eddie after all three of them almost died at the hands of someone else (Maddie’s estranged husband tried to kill her in 2x13 “Fight or Flight” and a former LAPD sniper shot Eddie in 4x13 “Suspicion”) or from a natural disaster (Buck and Christopher were caught in a Tsunami in 3x2 “Sink or Swim”) but an important fact to remember is he wasn’t on duty as a firefighter when he saved them.  Buck was off work when Doug took Maddie in 2x13; he was on medical leave (he actually quit his job) when he and Christopher were caught in the Tsunami in 3x1-3x3; and he arrived at work just before he left with Eddie to save Charlie from his mother but he hadn’t clocked in yet and he didn’t have a chance to put on his uniform in 4x13.  Buck risked his own life to save his family, his sister Maddie, his son Christopher and his husband Eddie.
GIFs #1-5 2x13 “Fight or Flight” Buck found Chimney bleeding out on the pavement in front of Maddie’s apartment building.  He called 9-1-1, told them who he was and the police detective who was assigned to the case arrived around the same time as Bobby and Athena.  Bobby tried to calm Buck down because Buck tried to tell the detective that it was Maddie’s husband who took her but he wouldn’t listen.  He took Chimney’s phone and accessed it with Chimney’s thumbprint while he was unconscious in the hospital and Athena told the detective Buck was the one who took the phone.  After she talked with the detective about Buck breaking the chain of command, she agreed to help him search for Maddie.  They spent hours driving all over California looking for her and when they finally located the cabins where Doug had taken her, Buck ran to hug and care for Maddie after she stumbled out of the woods following a brutal and fatal showdown with Doug. He rode in the ambulance with her and tried to keep her awake.
GIFs #6-10 3x1 “Kids Today” 3x2 “Sink or Swim” and 3x3 “The Searchers” Buck and Christopher went to the pier and got caught in a Tsunami.  They were separated after the wave crashed into the pier but once Buck emerged from being underneath the water, he called for Christopher and Christopher answered him.  Buck swam towards him but since he couldn’t reach Christopher’s hand, the wave pushed him past the pole Christopher was holding on to. Christopher yelled that he couldn’t hold on any longer but Buck jumped back into the water, swam towards Christopher and saved him.  They spent hours sitting on top of the 136′s ladder truck with other people Buck rescued waiting for help to arrive.  The wave started going back towards the ocean and the truck shifted which caused Christopher to fall off the truck and into the water.  They got separated but Buck spent the rest of the day and well into the nighttime searching for him.  He didn’t find him, so he called Maddie asking her for help regarding what he should do.  He saw Eddie because he was working at the VA hospital and when Eddie saw Buck, he asked him what happened, then asked where’s Christopher and then asked why he had Christopher’s glasses.  Buck told Eddie what happened and while he was explaining everything, a woman who had been carrying and caring for Christopher all day appeared with Christopher in her arms.  Eddie called out to Christopher and he responded, “Dad!” which caused Eddie to run to him.  Buck turned around so that he could see what Eddie was looking at.  He was thankful that Christopher was found but Buck was also in a state of shock. Chimney and Hen saw him and asked him what happened but he didn’t answer them until Bobby asked him if he and Eddie were ok.  He replied, “Yeah, we’re great” and collapsed in the arms of his captain and teammates from the 118.
GIFs #11-16 4x13 “Suspicion” and 4x14 “Survivors” Eddie was shot by a sniper while he and Buck were standing in the middle of the street after they saved a boy named Charlie from his mother.  Buck was in a catatonic state of shock after Eddie’s blood splattered on his face and clothes which caused Captain Mehta of the 133 to tackle him to the ground to remove him from the sniper’s line of fire.  After Buck watched Eddie close his eyes, he shook himself out of shock long enough to crawl underneath the ladder truck, drag Eddie’s limp body underneath that same truck to safety, lift him up and yell at the 133 to “Get him up!”, then they placed Eddie inside of the truck.  After the firetruck was out of the line of fire and enroute to the hospital, Buck ripped Eddie’s shirt open, applied pressure to his wound and talked to him to keep him alert until they made it to the hospital.  Eddie went unconscious for the last time while they were just three minutes away but Buck’s actions saved Eddie’s life.  Buck returned to a catatonic state of shock after Eddie went into surgery and when he left the hospital, his complexion was pale and he could barely form coherent sentences.  He only had one thing on his mind at that point and that was for him to talk to Christopher.  Buck and Christopher cried together and consoled each other after Buck received a text message from Bobby stating that Eddie made it out of surgery.

9-1-1 REACTION
This reaction is for the season 6, eleventh episode "In Another Life" which originally aired March 13, 2023. This episode was written by Lyndsey Beaulieu and directed by Joaquín Sedillo & Jann Turner. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
***LAST TIME ON 9-1-1***Maddie and Chimney prepare for the arrival of Margaret and Phillip Buckley at their new home. Albert surprises Chimney when he brings their father all the way from Korea. Bobby investigates the death of his sponsor, Wendell, with the help of Athena and May. Buck gets struck by lightning while responding to an emergency.
Now that we're all caught up, let's chat about episode eleven - IN ANOTHER LIFE.
We begin the episode at Maddie and Chimney's house. We see Maddie making tea and talking to her mother, Margaret Buckley (Dee Wallace). The latter offers to go shopping for flowers and plants with Maddie. It seems like she is really trying to have a better relationship with her daughter. Reading some of the comments on Reddit this evening, a lot of folks aren't into the whole parent redemption storyline. I don't mind it because it seems like Maddie and Chimney's primary motivation for bringing the families together is for their daughter to have grandparents.
While Maddie goes to check on Jee-Yun. There's a knock at the door. Margaret goes to answer it and we don't immediately see who is there. Margaret calls out to Maddie and when Maddie comes to the door we see an officer. Maddie sheds her first tear of many in this episode when she asks him, "Which one?". Speaking of which one, we see the ambulance arrive at the hospital with Buck. Bobby, Chimney, Hen, and Eddie are working on Buck, trying to get a pulse which they get. Bobby tells the doctors that Buck is prone to having blood clots and that he has an allergy to naproxen. As they wheel Buck away, the rest of the 118 look beyond miserable.
Tumblr media
Title card (sort of)!
Buck wakes up in a hospital room. His doctor (Aaron Staton) tells him he fell off a ladder and hit his head even though Buck's memory tells him otherwise. Maddie arrives and she's sporting the cutest pigtails. She calls the doctor Daniel. Maddie is Buck's nurse? The doctor tells him he is free to go home. Maddie tells Buck about family dinner and he asks, "Whose family?"
Tumblr media
Buck arrives home with Daniel (his doctor and also his older brother). Buck is fascinated to see his parents doting on him. We learn via Margaret and Phillip (Gregory Harrison) that Buck is a school teacher in this reality. It totally makes sense that someone like Buck, who has compassion for everyone, especially children (as evident through his relationship with Christopher Diaz). is a teacher. Buck, however, is shocked by this revelation. He then sees a toy ferris wheel which reminds him of the tsunami that hit the pier back in Season 3. We even hear Christopher's screams. Buck sits down to watch a game with his dad and older brother, Daniel. He seems content with his new reality.
In our next scene, Buck and Daniel arrive at Maddie's house. Buck sees a painting of a winterscape which reminds him of the time Maddie was abducted by her ex-husband and she ended up fighting for her life in Big Bear. We (and Buck) learn that in this reality Maddie has a daughter named Genevieve (Autumn James Hallisay) and Chimney is not the father. Turns out, even in this idyllic fantasy world, Maddie is married to Doug Kendall (Brian Hallisay). Buck, like me, is very confused.
Tumblr media
Back in the real world, Buck remains in critical condition and has been placed in a medically-induced coma. Maddie arrives at the hospital with Margaret and Phillip. Bobby tells them that the lightning strike sent Buck into cardiac arrest. Maddie sees Chimney and tells him she's worried about Buck. Chimney feels extremely guilty because it was supposed to be him on the ladder until Buck asked to swap places with him.
Back in Buck's fantasy world, Doug is talking incessantly about being a surgeon. It appears that Doug Kendall is an asshole in any reality. Maddie seems annoyed and uncomfortable especially when Doug says her food was salty. Everyone goes into the living room to play cards giving Buck the opportunity to confront his sister. He asks her what she's doing with Doug and tells her that he's not a good guy. Maddie assures him everything is fine but Buck sees the bruises on her arms. She tells she had an accident but he's heard that line before. Maddie gets upset and walks away from him just as Daniel comes into the kitchen. When Buck asks him about Doug, Daniel seems oblivious although he encourages Buck to stay out of whatever's going on between Maddie and her husband. Buck asks Daniel if someone in a coma can have dreams but Daniel says he doesn't know. Bucks asks him if he can take him somewhere.
Tumblr media
Buck goes to see Chimney who doesn't recognize him. In this reality, Buck never became a firefighter so he never got to meet Chimney. Chimney shuts the door in Buck's face but decides to invite him inside when Buck says he knows the meaning behind his nickname. Naturally, we, the viewer, do not get to hear the meaning behind Howard Han's nickname. Well played, writers! Buck sees a toy firetruck which reminds him of being a firefighter. Chimney likens Buck's situation to the film It's a Wonderful Life which I should see at some point since it always seems to be in the cultural zeitgeist. Chimney believes that like the main character in the movie, Buck needs to learn a lesson in order to return to his real life. Buck thinks he needs to fix Maddie's issues and tells Chimney that Maddie is with him. Chimney asks him to leave and Buck decides he's going to go see Bobby. A dark look falls over Chimney's face. He tells Buck that Bobby died five years ago. Bobby Nash is dead. The news is enough to stop Buck's heart and he collapses on the floor.
Back in the real world, Buck is having trouble breathing and Chimney calls for help.
Tumblr media
In the next scene we see May talking with Athena. The former asks her mother about Bobby. Athena tells her that Bobby's not doing great and that he blames himself for what happened to Buck. May thinks that's ridiculous. It's not like Bobby has the power to control lightning. Athena reminds her that Bobby will always feel responsible for his team - especially Buck. May says she wishes there was something more she could do to help him. Athena believes that Bobby seeing her face will be enough. May worries that with Bobby dealing with the death of his sponsor, if something happens to Buck, it's gonna send him spiraling. I have the same worries, too, May. Buck's nurses and doctor (Ana Dela Cruz) arrive in his room. Back in the fantasy world, we meet Dream Hen who has been summoned by Dream Chimney to help Buck. In the real world, Chimney, Maragaret and Phillip watch as the doctors manage to stabilize Buck. Back in the fantasy world, Buck appears to be okay.
In the hallway, Real Chimney talks to Albert and updates him on Buck. Chimney makes a comment about how it's easier handling your kid dying when you're a thousand miles away. This is clearly a dig at his father, Sang. Eddie and Real Hen arrive and the latter tells Chimney to go home and get some rest. Chimney points to Bobby who has been at Buck's bedside the entire time.
Tumblr media
Back in Buck's fantasy world, Dream Hen tells Buck about the plane crash (Season 1). Neither she nor Dream Chimney knew about Bobby's addiction prior to him dying. It makes sense. Back in Season 1, Buck tries to sneak a peek at Bobby's black book which causes the latter to lash out at Buck. It is Buck and Hen who head over to Bobby's apartment after he fails to show up for his shift at the firehouse. They find Bobby and this is where Bobby tells them about his drug and alcohol addiction. Bobby then asks them for help. Since Buck became a teacher, he never got to meet Bobby and therefore he never had a chance to intervene. Buck asks about Eddie and Chimney tells him that Eddie went off the deep end when he lost Christopher. It was at this moment that my heart stopped. Thankfully, Chimney quickly clarifies by saying that Christopher was taken by Eddie's parents. Because Bobby died, by the time Eddie showed up at the firehouse, there was a new captain. The new captain wasn't as accommodating as Bobby when it came to Eddie having a child with special needs. Oh, and because Buck never became a firefighter in this reality, he never met Abby (Connie Britton) which means he never met Carla Price which means he never got a chance to introduce Carla to Eddie and Christopher.
Back in the real world, Carla (Cocoa Brown) brings Christopher to the ICU unit. While Carla distracts a nurse, Eddie sneaks Christopher in to see Buck. Poor Eddie looks so sad in this scene. Christopher tells Buck that he's going to be okay. He asks Buck to come back.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Buck, Dream Hen, and Dream Chimney arrive at the hospital. Buck feels like he's running out of time. Dream Hen tells him that the hospital is connected to Buck.
We then see May bring Bobby food. She tells him to eat and Bobby teases her by saying she reminds him of a certain person. Bobby says there's no change in Buck. May says it must be hard not being able to do anything. She reminds him that her mom brought two kids to their marriage and Bobby brought one - Buck. May says that Buck is stubborn and that he will find his way back to them. She tells Bobby she loves him. I love their relationship so much.
Tumblr media
Buck's doctor tells the Buckleys they are gonna check to see if Buck can breathe on his own. They take him off the ventilator. Now it's up to Buck. Back in the fantasy world, Buck sees a toy plane. He has flashes of the plane crash from Season 1. Buck thinks he sees Bobby and goes after him. I thought it was cool how the hallway kept getting longer and longer. Buck finds Dream Bobby in a medical supply cabinet filled with drugs. Dream Bobby is serving some serious junkie realness. Buck thinks he's in purgatory. Dream Bobby tells him to relax and warns him that if things become too real in his dream world, he will end up getting stuck there. Dream Bobby sees the real Bobby in Buck's hospital room. Dream Bobby tells Buck he could be dying or he could be fighting for his life. He has to choose. Dream Bobby believes Buck can fix things. Buck says his parents never really saw him when he was growing up because they were too caught up in their grief over losing Daniel. For the first time, even if it isn't real, they are seeing him the way he has always wanted to be seen.
Back in the real world, Bobby has his rosary in hand and is keeping a vigil over Buck. Athena arrives and tells him to take a break. Now that Athena is alone with Buck, she reminds him that he never gives up. She reminds him that Bobby has lost two children and won't survive losing him. She tells him to wake up.
Tumblr media
Back in his fantasy world, Buck yells at Athena and tells her he's trying. I thought it was a nice Easter egg to show all of the pregnant women in this scene. It reminded me of the scene in Season 1 where a bunch of women in a yoga class all go into labor at the same time and Buck and Bobby have to deliver three babies. Dream Bobby reminds Buck that he can't fix everything. Buck tells him that he fixed the real Bobby. We get flashes of Buck and Bobby over the years. Dream Bobby reminds him that he is Buck and that's enough. He tells Buck to go and Buck starts running. He runs past Chimney and Christopher (who is looking for his dad) and his parents. When he gets to his room, he is stopped by Daniel who tells him he can't leave. Buck tells Daniel he loves him but he isn't real. Daniel blocks the door. Buck manages to get through the door but Daniel tells him it's too late. Buck sees himself in his hospital room being removed from the ventilator. His oxygen levels are dropping and if he doesn't take a breath, the doctors will have to reconnect him to the ventilator. Buck takes an axe and breaks the glass separating himself from the room. Daniel turns into Buck or as RuPaul would say, his inner-saboteur. Buck does manage to breathe on his own which releases him from his dream world. Buck regains consciousness and is told he needs to take two weeks off from doing any heavy lifting or rigorous work. The doctor tells him he has visitors and the entire 118 including so rando firefighters enter the room. Buck hugs Christopher.
Tumblr media
We then see Buck relaying all of his dream to Bobby while they play cards. Bobby tells Buck that his parents do care about him. Buck tells Bobby that he saw him sitting next to his bed with his rosary beads and honestly, if I were Bobby I would've been so confused as to how Buck knew that. Buck tells Bobby that he is the one who helped him find his way home.
In our penultimate scene, Myung-Soon (Jenny Baek) talks with Chimney. She tells him that his dad is sorry. She tells him that his father was ashamed and he felt like a failure. Everything about being in the United States reminded him of his failures. He couldn't save his business nor his marriage which is why he left the country. His ultimate failure was not being able to convince Chimney to come back to Korea after his mother died. Myung-Soon tells Chimney that he and his father have a lot in common. They're both prideful. Chimney sees his father, Sang (David Young Lee) playing with Jee-Yun. He asks if he and Myung-Soon can stay longer. I thought it was funny that even with Buck being in a coma, he was still helping his friends.
Tumblr media
In our final scene, Buck comes home to his apartment. He has so many flowers and cards and Maddie tells him there's even more at the firehouse. Margaret and Phillip offer to buy Buck a sofa since he no longer has one. While they go off in search of a tape measure, Maddie kisses Buck on the forehead and he hugs her back.
While others may disagree (I'm looking at all you bitter Redditors out there who are acting super pissy about there being no 'Buddie' in this episode, I think this is one of the best episodes of the show. I first binged this show back in 2020 when we were all in lockdown and I've rewatched every available season at least four times a piece. What makes this show so special to me is how well-written each of our main characters are. Buck is the heart of this show. At first glance he is a bit of a loose cannon who likes to go off half-cocked. But, upon deeper exception, he is also very loyal to those he calls a friend. He would move heaven and earth if it meant keeping his sister, his best friend, his teammates, his captain, and his mother figure (Athena) safe. I love how this episode was a celebration of the very thing we all love about Buck.
I thought this episode was well done. I like the bouncing back and forth between the real world and Buck's fantasy. I love that we got to not only see Daniel, we got to see him as an adult. I thought they did a great job of casting someone who looked like he could be related to both Oliver Stark and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The biggest complaint I've seen about this episode is how little Eddie we got. It is pretty obvious what the writers are doing this season. There has been very little interaction between Eddie and Buck which is so funny considering they are best friends. I've been a fan of their friendship since Eddie's introduction in Season 2 and as a queer man, I never thought there was anything romantic about their relationship. I find it baffling, honestly, that this show has had multiple gay and lesbian characters, most of them POC, yet a very vocal part of the fandom would rather ship the two straight-coded characters. I get it though. Buck and Eddie are extremely attractive and their friendship is free of toxic masculinity which is a breath of fresh air. Plus it's very rare to see two men, two straight-coded men, co-parent a child on-screen. But at the end of the day, what I wish Buddie shippers would realize is that these two are not a couple and it would be way more revolutionary if they remained as is. Unfortunately, the writers, who are most likely as weary of these shippers as I am, have gone out of there way to ensure that Eddie and Buck never get together (which I'm perfectly okay with) but it's at the expense of not having them on screen together (without Christopher serving as a buffer) and that honestly sucks. This is the reason we can't have nice things. Sigh.
Tumblr media
Anywho, as I mentioned before, this was a perfect conclusion to the events of last episode. I'm happy our beloved Buckeroo is safe and it won't be long before he's back in action with the rest of the 118. Until next time ...

Buck/Eddie: I Can’t Get Enough of This Kind of Love (Part 2 of the Good News on My TV Screen Buddie AU series)
In just a few days, Buck has been in his second helicopter crash, been rescued by his boyfriend and their friends, witnessed people almost dying at a bug eating competition and the largest charley horse possibly ever, seen a woman with a high heel through her face at a child's beauty pageant, and had his beloved Eddie tell him he loves him for the very first time while tripping on laced brownies.
So there's that.
In which news reporter Buck is an integral part of the events from the episode 2x06 "Dosed".
Tumblr media
(Amazing fanart poster by the amazing @jemmalynette! )
(Thank you so much to everyone who left love and kudos and comments for the first story in this series! In my head, the first story was a one and done that I had a lot of fun writing, and then all the requests to make this a series inspired me to do exactly that!
If you haven’t read the first story in the series, I would recommend doing that first, so you get the background of news reporter Buck and firefighter Eddie, and how they first meet and get together. You can read the first story here )
I Can’t Get Enough of This Kind of Love (can be read on Ao3 here)
Carefully placing the box labeled Dishes on the kitchen counter, Eddie immediately went back outside, bending down to grab the next box. "You really want me to like you, don't you?" Maddie's voice came from behind, and Eddie spun around, meeting her stare with a hopeful smile.
"Honestly, Maddie, I really like your brother, so yes please," Eddie answered promptly, and Maddie's gaze softened. She stepped forward, and patted Eddie on the shoulder as she walked past him and into her new home.
"Excellent answer!" Maddie called back, and Eddie felt arms wrap around him from behind. He leaned back into his boyfriend's embrace, smiling as Buck planted a kiss behind his ear.
"Evan!" Maddie yelled out the window, "you can make googly eyes at your boyfriend later, he wants me to like him and my furniture isn't going to move itself!" She smirked as Buck blushed and walked over to the couch, bending his knees and grabbing one end as Eddie dutifully grabbed the other.
"Googly eyes, maybe when you stop making googly eyes at Chim," Buck muttered under his breath, and Eddie laughed as they moved in tandem up the stairs.
"I'll tease Chim relentlessly at work if that helps," Eddie promised with a wink, and Buck grinned mischievously, nodding his head.
"We've got a helicopter crash, a news station was doing a traffic report," Bobby explained as the fire truck screeched to a stop and everyone quickly hopped out. Eddie noticed the rest of his team shooting worried glances at him, but he waved them off with a grateful smile.
"Buck never does the traffic reports," Eddie assured them, as Bobby called them into a quick huddle. "He told me he paid those dues a few news stations ago."
"Um, Eddie?" Chimney said hesitantly, facing the helicopter and extending a finger to point at the back window. Turning, Eddie met Buck's gaze, could see from even this distance how he was working hard to keep his breathing even and his body still.
"Fuck," Eddie breathed out, feeling his heart stutter in time with the still-spinning rotors.
"Eddie, you going to be okay on this one?" Bobby asked softly, laying a comforting hand on Eddie's shoulder.
"Buck needs me, Cap, I'm on it," Eddie promised, forcing his focus onto the job at hand. "We need to watch for dynamic rollover, when we start getting them out the weight of the copter could shift."
"Okay, Chimney, you're going to pull Buck out first, make sure you're keeping an eye on the balance," Bobby ordered as they moved towards the helicopter.
"Eddie, can you shut down the helicopter?" Eddie opened his mouth, about to argue that he should be the one to get Buck out, but then he sighed, nodding, knowing he needed to trust his captain to get Buck out of there quickly and safely.
Still, Eddie couldn't keep his eyes off Buck, lunging forward as the helicopter rocked, but then Chimney had Buck back on solid ground, and Eddie was next to the pilot, stabilizing the balance and shutting off the engine. The second he had the pilot out and in Hen's capable hands, Eddie spun around and grabbed Buck in his own grasp, pulling him into his arms.
Eddie gripped onto the back of Buck's shirt, tugging his body as closely as possible. Buck nestled his face into the crook of Eddie's shoulder, and Eddie swayed them gently from side to side, pressing his lips against Buck's temple. "You're safe, sweetheart," Eddie murmured into Buck's skin. "I've got you."
He could feel Buck nodding and pulled back just enough to see Buck's face, running a gentle finger over a small cut on his boyfriend's cheek. "Let me check you out," Eddie insisted, leading Buck over to a bench and kneeling in front of him.
"You can check me out any time," Buck bantered back with a mischevious smile, and Eddie laughed, shaking his head as he squeezed Buck's hand.
"Sounds like he's just fine!" Chimney called out with a smile, patting Buck's shoulder as he made his way over to where the pilot was sitting.
"No comments about how you're hotter than just fine, or how much you like me kneeling in front of you," Eddie commanded, pointing a finger at Buck, who shrugged and grinned,  Eddie smiling back in relief. "You scared the shit out of me," Eddie whispered, leaning in to cup Buck's face in his hands, laying a soft kiss on his lips. "Let me make sure you're okay, please?"
"Yeah," Buck whispered back, resting his forehead against Eddie's, "yeah, of course." Pulling out his penlight, Eddie shined the beam into Buck's eyes.
Nodding in satisfaction, he took Buck through the rest of concussion protocol, checked for any other injuries, and cleaned out the small cut and bandaged it. Next to him, Chimney and Hen were finishing checking the pilot, assuring Buck he was completely fine.
"What were you doing on traffic anyway?" Eddie asked, sliding up to sit next to Buck, wrapping an arm around his shoulders as Buck leaned into Eddie's side.
"Oliver called in sick last minute, so I offered to sub in," Buck answered, sighing in relief as Eddie moved a hand to the back of Buck's neck, rubbing at the tense muscles. "I definitely didn't expect to be in my second helicopter crash." As Eddie's hand suddenly stilled at Buck's words, Buck bit his bottom lip, meeting Eddie's wide-eyed gaze. "If it helps, I clearly survived that one too?" he offered up hesitantly, and he heard poorly-concealed laughter coming from the rest of the team's general direction.
"Can't say I didn't know what I was getting myself into," Eddie sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head, before leaning in to kiss Buck softly. "Let's try to keep helicopter crashes off the agenda, yeah?"
"No subbing in for traffic again or chartering a romantic copter ride for the two of us, got it," Buck recited with a smirk, and Eddie rolled his eyes, nudging Buck in the side before hopping off the bench.
"Any chance I could get you to come back with me to the fire station so I can keep an eye on you?" Eddie asked hopefully.
"I would love that, but I have to get back to work," Buck said ruefully, gesturing at the news van that was already pulling up.
Eddie sighed, leaning forward to rest his forehead against Buck's. "Text and call me when you can, please? Just let me know you're doing okay?"
"Of course," Buck promised, sneaking another quick kiss in before heading towards the van. Grabbing the door handle, he turned around. "Be safe out there, babe! And thanks guys!"
Eddie had gotten a myriad of selfies from Buck in the hours after the helicopter rescue. One at his desk, captioned I promise I'm watching out for papercuts. Another getting ready to go in front of the camera, Taking proper electrocution prevention steps. The pictures continued rolling in, Eddie laughing fondly at each one, saving them to his photos because he couldn't resist. Any picture of his boyfriend was one he wanted to have, even when said boyfriend was being a glorious little shit.
His phone trilled out "Breaking News!" again and Eddie quickly clicked on the new picture, a smile spreading across his face as the photo revealed Buck standing in front of the fire station, captioned Practicing fire safety. Shoving his phone in his pocket, Eddie hurried down the stairs, skipping the bottom step in his haste.
"Surprise!" Buck called out with a grin, hurrying forward to meet Eddie, throwing his arms around his boyfriend's neck before leaning in for a kiss. Eddie's arms looped around Buck's waist as he held him close, both men smiling broadly.
"This is a great surprise," Eddie proclaimed, brushing a curl of hair away from Buck's eye. "Did a story fall through?"
"Actually, a new story came up," Buck grinned, grabbing Eddie's hand and interlacing their fingers. "C'mon, let's go upstairs, I want to talk to everybody about it."
"Hey Buck!" Chimney met the two at the top of the stairs, grabbing Buck's hand and pulling him in for a quick hug. "Since we have a chance now, what kind of wine does your sister like best? I'm going over to help her move more of her stuff after work."
"Red, and make sure you bring some popcorn too," Buck answered with a wink, patting Chimney on the shoulder. "Maddie could eat popcorn all day every day and be very happy about it."
"Thanks!" Chimney called back as Buck made his way around the kitchen, greeting everyone else before moving to the coffee maker. Placing a filled mug in front of Eddie, Buck sat down holding his own mug (the one Eddie had brought from home for Buck to use whenever he visited the fire station). Leg brushing against Eddie's, Buck took a sip of coffee.
"Before I say anything else, I just want to make sure you guys know you can absolutely say no to this," Buck began, meeting the eyes of everyone else around the table. "You don't have to give me a reason, and I won't take any offense, I promise." Turning to Eddie, Buck interlaced their fingers. "Including you babe, okay?"
Waiting until everyone had nodded, Buck continued. "My boss knows I'm dating someone from the 118, and after that helicopter rescue this morning, he came to me and told me he wants a story done on a day in the life of the LAFD heroes of the 118. I told him I have to be the one to do it, because I don't want anyone else twisting up the story in any way, and that you guys have to be okay with it or it isn't happening."
There was silence for a minute, and then Bobby spoke. "You know, normally I would absolutely say no to this," he said with a sigh, leaning back in his chair, "because a reporter could get in the way, could create their own narrative that has nothing to do with the truth, or could even use someone's pain or cause harm themselves. But Buck, you also know I trust you. I believe that you will do this truthfully and put the safety of others above the story."
"I will, absolutely Bobby," Buck vowed, blushing at Bobby's words. "I would never spin anything to make you guys look bad, and I would never put anyone in danger or show them suffering, I promise."
"Of course you wouldn't," Eddie said proudly, slinging an arm around Buck's shoulders and pulling him in close. Buck beamed up at him, leaning into his side.
"We all trust you, Buck," Hen said, and Chimney nodded, and Buck smiled bashfully, glancing down at where his and Eddie's fingers were now intertwined on Eddie's thigh.
"So it's okay to start tomorrow?" Buck asked hesitantly, and Bobby let out a gentle laugh, nodding.
"Absolutely, Buck, we'll see you then," Bobby responded, just as the alarm sounded, and the rest of the team leapt to their feet.
"I especially like the part where you'll be at work with me all day," Eddie grinned, leaning in for a quick kiss, which Buck eagerly returned.
"Me too," Buck grinned back, squeezing Eddie's hand before letting go. "Stay safe, sweetheart."
The next day saw Buck arriving hand in hand with Eddie, each balancing a carryout tray of coffees in their free hand. "You know we already love you two, right?" Hen teased, plucking the coffee with her name on it from the tray and taking a grateful sip. "But please feel free to keep the caffeine coming."
"I'm ready for my close up!" Chimney announced, dramatically leaping into the room, arms flourished. He grinned as everyone laughed, before taking his coffee as well.
"Since you're so ready, Chim, why don't you come for your interview first?" Buck gestured downstairs, eyes twinkling mischeviously as Chimney followed him. "We can start with you telling the story about how you got  your nickname..."
By the time the round of interviews was over, Buck was near tears. He would swear he heard his cameraman sniffing as well. Every story the 118 had told him had broken his heart and lifted him up, all at the same time, and when his friends and boyfriend shared what were the best things about being a part of the 118, Buck was honored all over again that they had welcomed him into their family.
A sudden alarm jolted Buck out of his emotions and back into the present, and he quickly followed the team as they raced towards the fire truck and flung themselves in, settling into their seats.  "You mean I can't just ride on your lap?" Buck pouted teasingly, as he ran to the driver's side of the news station van.
"You've taken a ride on my lap plenty of times, Buck," Eddie murmured into Buck's ear, "and I'm sure we can arrange another ride when we get home tonight." Smirking, he planted a quick kiss on Buck's lips before joining the others in the truck.
"You gorgeous bastard!" Buck yelled at Eddie's retreating back, Eddie's snort of laughter making Buck smile as he buckled his seatbelt and started the car.
"Whoa!" Buck's jaw dropped as he took in the crowd, and particularly the monitor lizard, in front of them. "Did you know monitor lizards have long forked tongues just like snakes?"
"Ah, a fan!" the woman nearest the lizard exclaimed, clapping her hands as Chimney darted out of the way. "His name is Claude, and the winner gets to take him home. Do you want to give it a try?"
"I'm okay over here, thanks," Buck responded quickly, as he took in the rest of the scene before him, namely the man struggling to breathe. As the 118 made their way over to the man, Buck made sure he and his cameraman stayed out of the way.
Chimney and Hen both flinched as they knelt down beside the man. Buck had the cameraman swing the camera away as soon as he realized the patient was in clear medical distress, instead having him film the other competitive eaters at the table, which unexpectedly included the woman with live cockroaches crawling back up out of her mouth.
As the man began breathing again (and consequently began throwing up live crickets), the camerman got footage of the saved patient and the 118 loading him into the ambulance. "Did you know Joey Chestnut once ate seventy four hotdogs in ten minutes?" Buck piped up eagerly, and Eddie grinned, giving Buck a quick peck on the lips as he hurried towards the truck.
"You are so smart, babe," Eddie said proudly, Buck beaming as he slid back into the driver's seat of the van.
"Even live bugs erupting out of people's mouths can't turn you two off from kissing, huh?" Chimney called out as he started up the ambulance. Eddie shook his head, offering Chim a proud grin and a wink as he drove off.
After rescuing a body builder from the largest charley horse anyone there had ever seen, the fire truck and news van pulled back into the station, Buck hopping out to join the 118 as they headed towards the kitchen.
"You did good, kid," Bobby said with a smile, squeezing Buck's shoulder as he passed. "You put the people above the story." Buck ducked his head, blushing, as he did a pleased little hop on his way towards Eddie.
"He's right, babe," Eddie grinned, tugging Buck into his side, planting a kiss to the top of his head. "Just like the day we met."
"Thanks, baby," Buck said with a bashful grin, turning his head to steal another kiss from his boyfriend, before squeezing his hand and pulling away. "I've got to get in a call to Taylor and give her an update before the next call."
"I'll be waiting on the couch," Eddie promised, and Buck winked at him before striding away, already pulling his phone out as he headed towards the bench right outside the station.
"Want a brownie?" Hen asked Eddie as she walked over, holding out the last brownie on the plate.
"Thanks, I'm starving," Eddie answered, grabbing the brownie and taking a bite. "Are there more treats on the table for Buck? He's just calling in to his boss."
"There are plenty of delicious snacks left," Hen promised as she settled into a chair. "Just not any more of these between you, me and Bobby."
"As  long as there's sugar," Eddie laughed, looking fondly over towards Buck, who had now hopped up onto the bench and was skipping back and forth across it as he talked into his phone.
The next call brought them all to another unexpected venue, this time a child beauty pageant. "Is that..." Buck asked, trailing off as he stared at the reason the 118 had been called.
"A woman with a high heel stuck in her face?" Chimney responded, shaking his head as they made their way towards her. "Yes, yes it is."
The little girls were all swarming around Buck, who had crouched down immediately and was now occupied giving out smiles and high fives to the giggling children. So it took him a bit to notice that Eddie and Hen were definitely not acting like themselves. Eddie was staring down at the kids surrounding Buck with a look of shock and some terror too, his eyes wide and his body frozen.
"Eds, you okay there?" Buck asked, carefully rising to his feet and laying a hand on Eddie's arm.
"Are we giants, Evan?" Eddie asked, dragging out every syllable, before getting distracted for a minute trying and failing to see his own tongue. "Or are these the tiniest ladies ever?"
"Um, they're definitely kids, babe," Buck responded, eyes squinted in confusion even as he couldn't help but let out a laugh. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Your hair is glowing," Eddie breathed out in awe, holding his hands out over Buck's curls. "It's making my heart warm." Buck blushed, reaching for Eddie, who just kept making grabby hands at Buck's head. Buck quickly gestured to his cameraman to stop filming, before turning to Chimney.
"Hen's doing it too," Chim answered, just as confused, as he finished up with the injured woman and watched her be taken out on a gurney. Both men turned to see Hen poking a balloon, giggling with delight each time it bounced back at her.
"They are definitely tripping," Athena said matter-of-factly, coming up from behind them, having finished putting the high heel attacker in handcuffs. Hen hurried up, beaming as she took in Athena's face before delightedly informing her she smelled like love. Athena calmly nodded her thanks before radioing in for RA backup.
"The brownies," Chim said suddenly, turning to Athena. As Athena pressed him for more information, Buck heard Eddie start loudly crying, and ran to his boyfriend's side.
"I don't like this," Eddie blubbered as a police officer gingerly handcuffed him.
"Hey, hey sweetheart, it's going to be okay, I promise," Buck promised, cupping Eddie's face in his hands reassuringly, Eddie leaning into the touch. "Just breathe, I've got you."
Eddie sucking in air and puffing out huge dramatic breaths was definitely a sight Buck was tucking away for later, to tease his boyfriend with when it wouldn't make Eddie start crying more. Athena shook her head and sighed, exchanging a fondly exasperated look with Buck before explaining to Eddie and Hen what had happened.
"We don't want you to hurt yourselves or anyone else," Athena finished, as Hen was beginning to reach for her for another sniff and a hug.
"Yeah, yeah I like that idea," Eddie choked out. As Athena helped guide them towards the door, the backup RAs rushing in, Eddie tugged back towards Buck.
"I've got you, let's get you somewhere you feel safe," Buck said gently, squeezing Eddie's arm in reassurance.
"I love you, beautiful Buck," Eddie whispered into Buck's ear, before planting a sloppy kiss on Buck's cheek and letting himelf be led away, a stunned Buck following silently behind him.
Stumbling out of the bunkroom a few hours later, Eddie blinked at the bright lights, sighing gratefully as Buck pressed a large glass of water into his hands. After Eddie downed the entire glass without stopping, Buck refilled it and joined Eddie on the couch.
"Are you feeling okay now?" Buck asked softly, as Eddie placed the now-empty second glass on the table and leaned his head onto Buck's shoulder.
"Just got a headache, dry mouth, and an overwhelming sense of humilation," Eddie huffed out, burying his face in Buck's shirt. "I can't even imagine what came out of my mouth."
"You don't remember, huh?" Buck sighed softly, and Eddie quickly lifted his head to look at him.
"Buck, please don't tell me I said something horrible to you," Eddie said quickly, grabbing at Buck's hands. "I was out of my mind, I had no idea what I was saying."
"That's what I was afraid of," Buck mumbled, staring at the floor. Eddie tugged at his hands until Buck looked at him again, and Eddie's eyes grew wise as he took in the pained look on Buck's face. Reluctantly, Buck pulled away before responding. "Eddie, you told me you love me."
"Shit, that's what I was afraid of," Eddie sighed, scrubbing his hands over his face. The whimper that slipped past Buck's lips, the sharp intake of shaky breath, and the footsteps quickly retreating had Eddie snapping his head back up, yelling "Buck!" as he saw his boyfriend's back moving further and further away.
Sprinting, Eddie reached out and grabbed Buck's hand, planting his feet and refusing to budge an inch as Buck tugged half-heartedly. "Eddie, please," Buck whispered, fixing his gaze on the floor. "I can't watch you walk away, okay?"
"And you think, what, that I want to watch you walk away instead?" Eddie was fully aware how much of himself he was putting on display, but he kept going, fingers under Buck's chin to tilt his head up and meet his eyes. "I meant I didn't want the first time I said it to be while I was out of my mind on laced brownies surrounded by tiny beauty queens."
"Wait, Eddie, what..." Trailing off, Buck's breath hitched, his wide watery eyes staring into Eddie's.
"Turn the camera on," Eddie said firmly, gesturing to where the cameraman had left his equipment while he went to grab food with the crew. Buck opened his mouth, but Eddie gently lay a finger across his lips, shaking his head. "Please trust me, and turn the camera on. Point it right at me."
Buck nodded, shaky, picking up the camera and resting it on his shoulder, turning so the lens faced Eddie, who was now sitting down on the couch. As soon as the light switched on, Eddie looked straight into it. "You once asked me what was the best thing about being a firefighter with the 118," Eddie said, voice strong even as he wiped the fresh tear on his cheek. "And I said it was the comradery, that that was what I missed from being in the military, and I had found it here, again, with this team."
Lacing his fingers together, Eddie rested his chin against his knuckles, keeping his gaze focused on Buck, who appeared frozen, all breath and words caught up in his throat, eyes glued on Eddie's face. "But that's not true. I do care deeply about the people here, the family I chose, but that's not the best thing about being a firefighter here."
"Then what is?" Buck whispered, hands gripped so tight around the camera his knuckles had turned white.
"The best thing is that I met the love of my life," Eddie said, making sure his voice was loud and clear, that both the camera and Buck couldn't miss a single word. Eddie shrugged helplessly, letting out a watery laugh as he bit his bottom lip. "This gorgeous man refused to air someone else's pain to gain viewers, and suddenly I was watching the news way more than I ever had before, just to see his face and learn his name. Turned out his name is Evan Buckley. And he's the bravest, smartest, kindest man I've ever known. And I am so, so in love with him."
Buck sniffled loudly, and Eddie knew his own voice and face were full of the degree of emotion he only ever really showed around his son...and now around Buck. There wasn't any point in fighting it, especially not if it ever made Buck doubt how much he was loved.
"So Buck, you can use this video in the story, you can keep it for yourself if you ever need a reminder of how very loved you are, you can do whatever you want with it. I know I don't always say how I feel, and I'm sorr-" His words cut off on a surprised huff as Buck suddenly put down the camera and ran to the couch, bouncing onto the cushions and tackling Eddie onto his back, immediately wrapping his arms around him.
"I love you too, Eds, so much," Buck sniffled, wiping at his eyes, "and if this is you keeping your emotions hidden, I don't think I would survive having you turn them on full force." Eddie laughed, grinning up at Buck full force, before reaching up and pulling him down into a slow, tender kiss, one that Buck eagerly reciprocated.
When the special on the 118 aired, Eddie and Buck watched it snuggled up on the couch with Christopher, all three in their pajamas and surrounded by empty pizza boxes and popcorn bowls. Christopher giggled and clapped his hands every time he saw his dad, and patted Buck's cheek with a grin every time he heard one of Buck's voiceovers play over the images on the screen.
The special concluded with a montage of the 118, all explaining why they joined the station and what it meant to them. Eddie heard his sound bites about the military and comradery interspersed with the others, before the camera focused in on him again. "The best thing is that I met the love of my life," Eddie heard himself say, the image on screen changing to a video clip of Eddie hard at work on the scene of a car crash, the very first day and the very same place he and Buck had met.
"The best thing is that I met the love of my life too," Buck's voiceover rang out over the footage, before the video faded out to a wideshot of the fire station. "And he is a hero, surrounded by heroes. The 118 never hesitate, never put their safety over the well being of others. They spend long days and nights in harrowing conditions, helping people through horrific experiences, and these brave men and women never ask for anything but to know where the next emergency is. We all owe the dedicated members of the 118 far more than we may ever know. So next time you pass by a fire station, think about saying thank you, even though they will never ask you to."
Eddie couldn't stop smiling, pressing kiss to Buck's temple, who grinned up at him from where he was nestled into Eddie's side.
The video shifted to one of Buck, hanging off the fire truck by one hand, grinning mischeviously. "Just please, please don't bring brownies. Try a nice gift card instead. Trust me on this. This is Evan Buckley, signing off, thank you for watching."
Eddie's laughter rang out over the closing credits.

MAY [TUWYAN]
Baby Sterling-Diaz was almost a month old, Eddie had returned to work and he was of course the most doting father. Messaging her every time he got off a call, calling before dinner to check up on Leah. He did his fair share of the night hours as well, he would wake up almost every time she cried, and try his best to soothe her as long as she wasn’t hungry.
But they hadn’t announced her name yet, and it was the question on everyone’s tongues. They had wanted to wait, to get used to their new lives first. And everyone mostly understood, except for Buck. Who was mostly sulking by himself in his apartment. But when Leah said about throwing a housewarming gathering, to introduce the baby to their family officially, he jumped at the opportunity.
Currently, Leah was sitting in the armchair, baby in her arms as she fed the little one. Christopher was playing with his Lego’s on the floor, and Eddie reminded him to tidy them up once he was finished so he didn’t hurt the baby. Bobby, Athena, May and Harry were the first ones to show up. Leah was still nursing when they did, so she greeted them quietly as she covered up with a muslin.
“Help yourself to drinks in the kitchen, and ignore any mess you find,” Eddie told them, smiling as he was entering the living room. He pressed a kiss to the top of Leah’s head as he passed, going to the garden as he started up on the barbecue. Oh yeah, Eddie was going all out for this.
“How are you finding motherhood?” Athena asked her, and Leah smiled out as she raised her eyes from where she was checking on her baby.
“I’m… it’s stressful,” she admitted, nodding her head. “Between a newborn and Chris, and Eddie’s hours, and adjusting to a new house… but we are making it work.” Then she was fixing her bra and her shirt. “Eddie,” she called out, and the man appeared out of seemingly nowhere, a bright grin on his face.
“Come on, sweetheart,” he said, his voice so soft. He threw the muslin across his shoulder before accepting the baby, holding her against the shoulder that was now covered. Gently burping the baby.
“Dad gets the best burps,” Christopher explained, which had the adults laughing out loud.
The doorbell rang, and Bobby was getting up to grab it. He returned with Hen, Karen and Denny. With the arrival of the third boy, the trio of youngsters were disappearing to Christopher’s room. And Hen and Karen were instantly cooing at the Texan with the newborn against his chest.
“Oh, she’s precious, Leah,” Karen said, reaching over to squeeze her hand gently. “And you look incredible, are you sure you birthed her?”
“The stretch marks and the peeing when I cough or sneeze suggest that I did,” she laughed, grinning as she raised her head to look up at Eddie, who had just earned himself a milky burp from his daughter.
“How's the feeding going?” Hen asked, and the women were clearly eager for all the details.
“Really well, actually,” Leah sounded surprised, as she rubbed her lips together. “She latched on pretty easily the first time, and I’ve been producing enough milk.”
“Sometimes too much, right? She’s been pumping like crazy, but it helps us through the night feeds,” Eddie grinned, cooing at the sleepy newborn in his arms, gently rocking her.
“Leah, when you said you were pregnant- and when you announced it was Eddie’s, I had no idea what you had gotten yourself into,” Hen said softly, shaking her head. “But you guys have clearly made this work.”
“He makes it pretty easy,” Leah admitted, as she glanced at her co-parent.
The front door was opening and soon, Chimney, Maddie and Buck were joining them in the somewhat crowded living room. They had intentionally left the other armchair free for Buck to sit himself down into, which he did straight away. Maddie made her way around, pressing a kiss to Eddie’s cheek and then one to Leah’s.
“Alright, guys. I love you all,” Buck said, looking around at the group. “But I will fight you all to be the first one to cuddle my niece.” They laughed, and honestly, most of them had accepted that they would have to get in line behind Buck.
Eddie made his way around the living room, gently laying the newborn down in Buck’s arms and making sure he was supporting her head. “There you go,” he whispered, as he watched his daughter nuzzle into the bicep of her uncle.
It wasn’t long after that, Eddie returned to his barbecue with Bobby and Chimney. Leah had a feeling that Bobby took over, but she knew Eddie wouldn’t mind too much. The women were doting over the newborn, who had her uncle wrapped around her finger. May was hovering near Buck, with Athena warning her to not get any ideas. Then eventually, the baby was passed around. Everyone getting their fair share of Baby Sterling-Diaz cuddles. Until she was returned to her mother.
“Alright, guys. It’s killing me now,” Maddie complained, now that they were all fed and were sitting around the living room. Even the three boys had joined them. “What’s her name?”
“Well, it was Christopher who gave us the idea of her name,” Leah said, looking at the boy who was perched against her armchair. “Why don’t you tell them, Chris?”
“Her name is Gabrielle Sterling-Diaz,” he announced, the biggest grin on his face as he looked at the snoozing newborn. “But we call her Gabby for short.”
“That’s a beautiful name,” Athena praised, with a warm smile. And then the 118 family were raising their glasses in a toast for the newborn.
“So did you guys ever work out a sleeping arrangement?” Buck asked, pointing between the two. Leah hadn’t moved from her seat, and Eddie was sitting on the arm just beside her, a beer bottle in his hand.
“Yeah, no,” Eddie laughed, shaking his head.
“Wait, what’s this?” May asked, frowning at them a little.
“Well, Eddie asked me to move in with him here right after I’d given birth to this little one,” Leah started to explain. “Now, obviously, we aren’t dating. Just co-parents,” she said, smiling but there were knowing smiles on a few members of their family. “So I told him he should invest in a bunk bed.”
“Only if I get the top bunk,” he cut in, brushing her hair back. “But that’s also really stupid. So I suggested I crash on the couch-“
“But then how would you get to Gabrielle before me?” She raised her eyebrow. “So to begin with, Eddie was sleeping on the floor with a ton of blankets.”
“But that was hurting dad's back,” Christopher cut in to explain.
“And then one night, I got up to grab little miss, and we didn’t have any pumped milk so I had to wake up Lee, and while waiting for her to finish feeding-“
“He passed out in the bed beside me and-“
“We’ve kinda just been sharing since.”
“So, you are dating?” Chimney asked, pointing between the two.
“No, we’re just really comfortable with each other now,” Leah explained to him.
“Let me know if that ever changes, I’ve had the HR forms on standby since you transferred, Leah,” Bobby teased, which had Athena swatting her hand at him.
“I still think babies are boring,” Harry told them, shrugging his shoulders. The adults were laughing out loud at him, shaking their heads.
Some more time passed, and there were a lot of smaller conversations going on now. Leah was hidden away in the bedroom, gently soothing Gabrielle to sleep. She had just been fed, and she was blinkingly sleepily in a way that always reminded Eddie of Leah.
“Hey, is she almost out?” Eddie asked, as he joined her in the bedroom, his voice soft and quiet as his arm was wrapping around her waist. He smiled as he looked down at the newborn, humming happily.
“Almost,” she whispered, nodding as she looked up at him. He rubbed the tip of his nose against her temple, holding her close as he closed his eyes. She hummed out, smiling as she rubbed his bicep gently.
“You’re beautiful, you know that?” He hummed out to her, a smile on his lips. “And so amazing.”
“You make this easy,” she whispered, as she looked down at their baby.
His finger was gently trailing along her jaw, as he tilted her head up with a hum. He smiled down at her, before brushing a light, soft kiss to her lips. “You’re perfect.”
“Uh-huh, keep your hands to yourself, Diaz,” she laughed quietly, playfully pushing him away. “Go sort out dessert, before our guests perish.”
He rolled his eyes playfully at her, kissing her forehead before he was heading back out to the living room. He clapped his hands together, looking around at the family but he suddenly felt really small at the looks they were giving him.
“So you guys are kissing now?” Buck asked, his face amused. And then Eddie’s eyes found the baby monitor that was sitting on the coffee table.
“Any of you mention this to Leah, I’m taking away all access to the baby,” he pointed at them all individually. And he was only half-serious. “Now, who wants dessert?”
“It sounds like you already had some-“ A plushie was launched in the direction of Chimney.

Never Letting You Go
Eddie doesn’t mean to tell Buck that he’s in love with him as the other man bleeds out. It just kind of happens.
They’d been driving back to Eddie’s house after a shift, Buck offering to drive Eddie to and from work while his truck was in the shop. They’d been joking about something Chimney had said during shift when Eddie saw a truck careening towards them, running the red light and going at least seventy-five in a forty-five. Eddie had barely gotten out Buck’s name in warning before the Jeep jolted and everything spun.
Eddie comes back to the present slowly. His vision is blurry and he tastes something metallic. Blood, his mind supplies. His ears are ringing and for a moment he can’t remember where he is.
It all crashes back to him as his vision clears partially. Car accident. They were in a car accident. The jeep seems to be upright, but there’s glass everywhere and the metal frame of the car is bent unnaturally.
Buck, Eddie’s mind screams at him. Where is Buck?
Eddie turns his head, sending a sharp pain to his shoulder as he moves.
His breath rushes right out of him when he looks at his best friend in the driver’s seat. His eyes are closed and there’s blood trickling down his face. Too much blood. Buck isn’t moving and Eddie can’t tell if he’s breathing. Frantically, he tries to reach over to Buck but he can’t move. Seatbelt, right.
Eddie groans as he manages to unclick his seatbelt. He extends his arms, bruised, but not broken, and sighs in relief. He’s able to maneuver himself closer to Buck with some difficulty, forcefully ignoring the throbbing in his head and focusing on getting them out of this. Alive, preferably.
Buck still isn’t moving but looking closely, Eddie can see the shallow rise and fall of the other man’s chest.
“Buck,” he says. His voice is scratchy and desperate but he doesn’t care. Buck has to be ok. He’s going to be. Eddie reaches over and puts his hand on Buck’s cheek. “Buck, come on, I need you to wake up.” Nothing happens. Eddie is panicking now. “Buck! Wake up, damn it!”
Buck doesn’t respond. Eddie drops his hand from Buck’s face and his head rolls to the side. Eddie forces his knees under him on the seat so he can lean over Buck and assess the damage.
Buck’s left arm is visibly broken, but that will heal. Eddie can’t see his legs, so he has no idea if they’re broke or not. He prays that they’re fine, Buck can’t handle redoing the crush injury from the fire truck. There’s blood on Buck’s shirt and Eddie reaches out to pull it up. There’s a long gash on Buck’s abdomen, deep enough that he’s going to need stitches. There’s another cut on Buck’s neck. It looks like it missed the carotid but it’s bleeding heavily. That combined with the cut on Buck’s abdomen and the cuts on his head could mean that he’ll bleed out if they don’t get help soon.
Eddie takes off his own shirt, faintly registering that there’s blood on it. He must be bleeding somewhere, but he can’t bring himself to care right now. “Buck, please, you need to wake up.” Eddie puts the shirt on the gash on Buck’s torso and presses down hard, hoping to stem the blood flow. “Buck,” he sobs, “Buck, you have to wake up. Wake up! Buck, don’t leave me, don’t do this to me. Don’t do this to Christopher. Please, Buck, we need you, I need you. Buck! Please, I love you, you can’t die, not like this.”
Eddie is truly crying now, desperate to hear his best friend's voice, to see the light in his eyes when he laughs.
Eddie hears Buck groan right as he hears the sirens and he nearly sobs in relief. “Buck, that’s it, wake up.” Eddie wipes the blood away from Buck’s eyes, still pressing his other hand over the cut on his stomach. “Come on, Buck.”
“Ed—“ Buck’s voice catches in his throat. His eyes blink open slowly, but only slightly and Eddie lets out another sob.
“I’m here, Buck, I’m right here.” Buck’s eyes flutter closed again and Eddie’s panic is back. “Hey, no, you gotta stay awake for me. Buck, open your eyes.”
With what looks like a considerable amount of effort, Buck opens his eyes. He mutters incoherently but Eddie nods. “I’ve got you, help us coming, you just have to stay awake.”
Buck nods before groaning in pain. A paramedic runs up to the car, bag in hand being followed closely by a firefighter holding jaws. Eddie nearly passed out from relief.
What comes next is more of a blur than anything else. They get Buck out of the car first and onto a stretcher, rushing him over to an ambulance. Eddie goes next, and honestly doesn’t remember much of the ride to the hospital.
Doctors rush around the emergency room as he gets checked out. A few cuts that need stitches and a mild concussion but overall he’ll be fine. He asks everyone that passes him if they know anything about an Evan Buckley but no one will tell him anything.
What if—no. No, he’s not doing that to himself, he’s not letting himself go down that road.
“Dad!” Eddie whips his head around too fast and feels a sharp pain behind his eyes. Chris is coming towards him as fast as he can with Carla’s hand on his shoulder.
“Chris,” Eddie breathes out, deliriously grateful to see his son. He pulls him into a tight hug, hoping he never has to let go.
“Dad,” Chris repeats into his neck, holding him just as tightly. “Are you ok?”
Eddie pulls back slightly to brush a piece of hair away from his son’s eyes and give him a watery smile. “Yeah, buddy, I’m ok?”
Chris nods, looking unsure. “Where’s Buck?”
Eddie chokes back a sob, looking out at the emergency room, then to Carla, then back to Chris. “I’m not sure, but we’ll see him as soon as we can, ok?”
Carla puts a hand on Eddie’s shoulder reassuringly. “I’ll go see what I can find out.”
She disappears around the corner, presumably to go harass some nurses into telling her what they know. Eddie helps Chris onto the bed and settles back against the pillows, holding his son close. He starts to drift off immediately, even though he knows he needs to stay awake.
“Eddie, oh my god,” Maddie’s voice snaps him back to reality and he stares groggily at her.
“Maddie?” he finally manages to say.
She sighs, eyes roaming over him, obviously trying to assess the damage. “I was on my way to work when they called about Evan. The nurse says he’s still in surgery but directed me to you,” she explains before he’s able to ask.
“Did she say anything else?” Eddie asks, fully awake now and desperate to see Buck.
Maddie shakes her head, looking like she’s barely holding back tears. “No, she didn’t. God, what happened?”
Eddie closes his eyes, fighting back tears as well. “There was a car accident, a truck sped through a red light and hit the driver’s side. I don’t remember much else, but it was bad. I’m mostly fine, a few stitches and a mild concussion but Buck—“ Eddie’s cut off by a sob and he has to look away.
Maddie’s eyes are wide when he finally looks back at her. She nods and clearly puts a lot of effort into composing herself. “He’ll be fine, he has to be. Everyone else should be here any minute,” she says softly. “Chim took Jee-Yun to Mrs. Lee and Bobby, Athena, and Hen said they’re on their way.”
Eddie nods, looking down at Christopher who is sitting silently in his arms.
“He’s still in surgery,” Carla says, appearing around the curtain again.
Eddie nods, thankful that she’s here if nothing else. Maddie looks up at Carla hopefully. “Did they tell you anything else?”
Carla shakes her head sadly. “I’m sorry, dear.”
Maddie nods, shrinking into herself as silence settles over their little crowd.
Eddie’s doctor comes back in a few minutes later and gives him the all clear as long as he follows concussion protocol. Eddie thanks him with less gratitude than he’s probably owed and follows Maddie and Carla to the waiting room with his hand on Chris’s shoulder.
Bobby and Athena rush into the waiting room mere moments after the other four sit down. They both frantic as Carla waves them over.
“What happened?” Bobby asks, his voice desperate.
“You said there was an accident?” Athena adds.
“Eddie!” They all look around and see Hen rushing towards them. She pulls Eddie into a tight hug, looking terrified. “Are you alright? Where’s Buck?”
“I’m—“ Eddie can’t get out the words. He can’t say anything. How is he supposed to explain this to the people he loves, the only family Buck really has he… he can’t.
Carla steps forward, filling them all in on what happened, Eddie’s condition, and what they know about Buck. Eddie sits silently the whole time, barely registering a word.
Chimney arrives a few minutes later and someone must explain the situation to him but Eddie doesn’t hear it, doesn’t notice anything around him.
They sit there in silence for what feels like hours. Dozens of people filter in and out of the waiting room as they all wait for news. Eddie sees a few people crying. Me too, he thinks.
At some point someone must have gone to get coffee because a hot cup is pressed into his hands. He doesn’t drink it.
“Family of Evan Buckley?” a female voice says. Eddie hears it distantly, not registering what’s going on until Maddie stands up shakily.
“That’s us, uh, I’m his sister. This is Eddie, he was in the car with Evan.” Eddie snaps his head up and watches the doctor walk over. She’s wearing a scrub cap.
“Of course, well, Mr. Buckley has just come out of surgery. There was quite a bit of internal bleeding from the accident but we got him fixed up.” The doctor looks at Eddie. “The paramedics told me you stopped the blood flow before they got there. You saved his life.”
Eddie nods, unable to say anything. The doctor gives him a small smile and turns back to Maddie. “He has a few broken ribs, a broken arm, a pretty bad concussion, and more stitches than I’d like to see on one patient but he’s stable. He’s still asleep, but you can go visit him if you’d like. We just ask that you limit it to two at a time.”
“So he’s going to be ok?” Maddie asks, a drop of hope finally seeping into her voice.
The doctor smiles. “He should be just fine. He’s going to need lots of rest and someone to keep an eye on him with that concussion, but he’s okay.”
Maddie sobs in relief. “Thank you. Can you take us to him?” She looks over at Eddie, motioning for him to stand up. He does, on autopilot. His mind is reeling. Buck is okay. He’s alive. I love him.
Eddie follows Maddie and the doctor down the hallway silently. The mantra of Buck is okay continuing in his head on repeat.
Maddie goes in first as Eddie takes a moment to steel himself for the sight that lays ahead.
Buck is unconscious when they walk it, although the doctor had already told them that. He’s hooked up to a heart monitor abd a few other machines are beeping around him but overall he looks better than Eddie expected. He’s breathing on his own, there’s no more blood caking his face. He has bruises up and down the left side of his body and the cuts in his face are still ugly and red but he’s alive.
Eddie doesn’t realize he’s crying until Maddie grabs his hand, forcing his eyes to meet her gaze. “He’s alive, Eddie. You saved him.”
Eddie shakes his head. “He was only on that road because of me, he wouldn’t have—“
“Stop.” Maddie’s voice is firm and there’s a strong emotion flaring in her eyes. “This was not your fault, this is that idiot driver’s fault. You did everything right, Eddie. You saved my baby brother’s life.”
Eddie stares back at her, tears stream down both their faces. Without warning, Maddie pulls him into a bone crushing hug and he winces, pain flaring from where she’d hit a bruise.
“Sorry!” She says, pulling back quickly. “I forgot.”
Eddie manages a watery smile. “It’s ok.”
They each take a seat on either side of Buck’s bed. There’s a cast on his left arm, so maddie can’t grab his hand. Instead, she reaches out and brushes a lock of hair off his face. “You’ve gotta stop scaring me like this, Evan,” she says sadly.
They sit together quietly for ages. At some point, Eddie takes Buck’s right hand in his own and squeezes. He puts his other hand over Buck’s wrist, feels the pulse beat in time with the monitor.
“I told him that I love him,” Eddie whispers. Maddie’s gaze snaps to his face, shock clear in her expression. She doesn’t say anything, simply sits and waits. Eddie takes a shaky breath, staring at Buck’s face. “He was unconscious, back at the accident and I—he needed to wake up. I needed him to wake up, I couldn’t let him die. I wasn’t thinking about anything but keeping him alive and it just—I said that he couldn’t leave me like that because I love him.”
“Eddie,” Maddie says, barely above a whisper. She looks like she wants to say something else but then Buck groans and Eddie feels Buck’s fingers tighten around his own. “Hey, Evan, are you awake?” Maddie asks, immediately moving to rest her hand on his cheek.
Buck makes a noise that almost sounds like a word and his eyes flutter open. He looks around the room slowly, his eyes pausing on Maddie before they land on Eddie. He squeezes Eddie’s hand again and Eddie chokes on a delirious laugh. “You’re awake,” he says, almost in awe.
Buck cracks a small smile. “Did you mean it?” His voice is scratchy and it comes out weak.
Eddie's heart starts beating harder in his chest. “Mean what?”
Buck looks down at their intertwined hands then back up at Eddie. “At the accident. You told me you loved me.”
Maddie stares between the two of them, fighting a smile. Eddie gapes at Buck. “You heard that?”
Buck nods. “Did you mean it?” he repeats.
Eddie is at a complete loss for words. Buck was unconscious, he was dying, he—he heard Eddie? Eddie gives a miniscule nod.
Buck laughs, although it sounds more like a cough. “Good. I love you too.”
Eddie stares at Buck. This isn’t real. This can’t be real. Eddie must have died at the accident because this isn’t possible. “Buck, you—“
“I love you,” Buck repeats, firmer this time. “I’ve loved you for a long time, Eddie.”
And suddenly Eddie is grinning. Buck is alive and he loves Eddie back and none of this should be happening but it is and Eddie is crying again. “God, I love you so much, Buck. I thought you were dead.”
Buck smiles. “I can’t believe you waited until you thought I was dead to tell me you love me.”
Eddie huffs out a surprised laugh. Maddie is looking between them both like she can’t decide if she’s happy or angry. “I didn’t want to ruin anything,” Eddie explains. It feels like an inadequate reason now that he knows Buck loves him too.
Buck rolls his eyes at Eddie fondly. “Is Chris here?” he asks hopefully.
Eddie nods. “Yeah, uh, I can—“
“I’ll go get him,” Maddie says, interrupting him. She shoots her a grateful smile. He’s not ready to let go of Buck’s hand just yet.
Buck comes to stay with Eddie and Chris while he’s recovering. Bobby and Athena offered, since Maddie and Chimney have baby Jee-Yun to take care of, but Buck declines.
“I’d rather be with you,” he says, when Eddie asks.
It’s a long recovery for Buck, Eddie is back at work after a few weeks off. But this is better than when his leg was crushed. Buck isn’t afraid that he won’t be able to return to the 118 this time around. Eddie worries about him all the time, but he knows that Buck has Chris and Carla with him all the time and at night Eddie gets to climb into bed with the man he loves.
Eventually, Buck is completely recovered and asks if he should go back to his apartment. Eddie doesn’t even hesitate before saying no. He just got Buck, he’s not letting go of him. Not ever letting go if he has any say in it.

Once in a Blue Moon
Written for @tropetember day one: Friends to Lovers Fandom: 911 Pairing: Eddie x Buck Rating: Teen  Warnings: Alive Shannon, background Shannon/Taylor Word Count: 1,471 Summary: Love like the one between Eddie and Buck was rare and only came around once in a blue moon. You can also read it on AO3
It was inevitable that the two of them would end up like this. From the moment Evan "Buck" Buckley had laid eyes on Eddie Diaz he knew he was in trouble. The man was handsome and just Buck's type and Buck 1.0 would have been flirting with him in an instance but he was still in love with Abby, she had played a role in changing him into the man he was now, who wanted something more than a fling and one night stand and it scared him that this new man at the 118 could cause such a reaction in him so he fell back on his asshole behaviour and tried to keep Eddie at a distance but that didn't work because Eddie was determined in making friends with him.
Eddie is like a thunderstorm that comes out of nowhere bringing him gusting winds, flashes of lightning that lit up the sky and cool rain that is welcome on a warm day. He also brings with him the son in the form of his son Christopher.
The moment Buck met Christopher he fell in love with the little boy that was pure sunshine and he met dad Eddie and if he wasn't gone on Eddie already watching him be the best dad for his son he whatever fight that was left in him was gone. He was crushing on his best friend and he didn't know what to do about that.
Eddie and Christopher became what Buck had been looking for a family and Buck was so afraid that he might lose him that they would leave him behind. So as his love grew for Eddie his fear of losing them had him staying quiet, he was just happy to be a part of their lives.
+******+
"You are an idiot."
A sigh escaped Eddie at his ex-wife's helpful comment. "Yes, you have told me this several times." He reminded her as he turned to face her.
A sigh escaped Shannon as she crossed her arms over her chest, "Eddie, Buck is in love with you just as you are in love with him, don't you think it is about time that you two did something about it. Hell Christopher is days away from starting to plan your wedding and Athena has agreed to help him."
Eddie could only stare at her in shock, "Athena?" Athena Grant is without a doubt one of the scariest women he has ever met and he knew that she wasn't playing around.
"Yes, Athena who is Buck's mom has decided that she is tired of watching you two pine and mope around one another. Not to mention the rest of us. Christopher wants Buck to be his papa, his second father. He knows that you love his Bucky and that Buck loves you and he can't understand why the two of you are taking forever in getting together. We both know that it is you who is going to have to take the first step because Buck is afraid of losing you and Christopher and he won't tell you how he feels he will put on a smile and pretend that he is happy with the way things are, just like he did when you tried to date Ana."
Eddie winced at the reminder of his ill-fated and thankfully short romance with Chris' former teacher. She was pretty and smart but she saw Christopher's limits and didn't want him to find his own way to do things and she had a deep dislike of Buck, which Eddie couldn't understand Buck is a puppy in human form and he had been nothing but welcoming to Ana, even when Ana started crashing their movie nights and inviting herself on their outings with Christopher.
It had been Christopher who spoke up and said enough was enough, he wanted time with his Buck and his dad not his Buck, his dad and Ana. When Ana had suggested that Buck needed to take a step back and let Christopher get used to her being in Buck's place Eddie had been horrified he couldn't do that, he couldn't picture his life without Buck and he knew that their relationship was going nowhere, that Ana didn't fit with them.
Eddie couldn't deny that he felt happier with Ana gone and he could see that Christopher was and even though he wouldn't say it out loud so was Buck.
"Eddie, you deserve to be happy and so does Buck. Think about it." Shannon told her ex. She had found her second chance of happiness with Taylor Kelly of all people now it was time for Eddie to find his happiness. Love like the one between Eddie and Buck was rare and only came around once in a blue moon she hated for them to miss out on it.
+*****+
The thing is Eddie couldn't remember what it was like not to love Buck. The younger man came into his life when he was struggling to stay afloat being in a new city, starting a new job and being a single father to the world's greatest kid he was drowning and then along came this ray of sunshine who offered him a life raft, who had supported him since, who told him what an amazing dad he was every time he began to doubt himself, who introduced him to Carla and who loves his son as much as Eddie does.
Buck was everything to Eddie and Christopher. The three of them had made themselves into a family and even his parents approved of Buck, they love and adore him and his dad kept dropping hints of when Buck would become a part of their family.
Eddie will also admit that he is a possessive and jealous man when it comes to Buck. He felt that jealous the first time Buck talked about Abby, he could see how loyal he was to her even though she had left him behind and when she came back with a fiancé after ghosting Buck for so long and used Buck's former feelings for her as a way to guilt him into making him promise to save Sam Eddie had been jealous that Abby still had such a hold on Buck and angry on Buck's behalf because once again Buck had been left behind by someone he loved.
Then there was Ali and she had been sweet and even though it burned him up to see Buck moving on with someone other than him he kept quiet as he was dealing with Shannon being back and them divorcing and figuring out how to be co-parents to their amazing son and making sure that Christopher knew that while they were no longer married they will always love him.
Then the bombing and Buck's leg being crushed and Eddie could see nothing else but Buck in pain and him unable to help him. Eddie remembers holding Buck's hand as the truck was lifted off of him, he remembers wanting to take the pain away from Buck.
He remembers Buck calling him and telling him that Ali had broken up with him because she couldn't handle it. Eddie had hated her for hurting her friend, in some ways Ana reminded him of Ali they both wanted the hot fireman boyfriend, the hero they could brag about but had no understanding about the danger they went into every day.
"Eds? What has gotten you thinking so hard?" Buck was looking at him, they were on truck cleaning duty and the sun was hitting Buck just right that made him glow and Eddie felt his heart skip a beat, Buck was like his own personal sunshine.
"I'm in love with you." Eddie couldn't control the words that escaped him.
Buck blinked at him as if he was taking in the words before a shy smile appeared on his face, "I'm in love with you too."
"Great now kiss." Hen shouted from above where she, Bobby and Chimney were watching and listening with interest.
"Come on Eddie we know you want to," Chimney added, a grin on his face.
"I will allow it this one time," Bobby added.
"Well, how can we say no to that?" Having Bobby's permission Eddie moved and pulled Buck into his arms, the other man melted into him as if he was made to fit in Eddie's arms. The kiss was soft and sweet but full of emotions.
"Later when we are alone I will give you kisses that will make your toes curl," Eddie whispered in Buck's ears as their teammates cheered above them.
Buck's smile was soft and sweet, "Does that mean I should tell Athena and Maddie to hold off planning our wedding?"
A teasing grin appeared on Eddie's face, "At least for a few more months."

A Very long list of Season 5 Predictions/Wish List
I tried to hit as many of the characters as possible so this is really really long
The trickiest thing about this show seems to be the ever growing cast creating several stories at once and the fact that it’s a show about first responders so even characters that don’t seem like they would follow that career choice end up there and those that don’t sometimes feel out of place.
This is not to say that I don’t LOVE AND ADORE FIREFIGHTER ALBERT HAN! (but really kind of thought it came out of nowhere and yet I’m not surprised because what else were they going to do with him?)
It seems unlikely they’d assign Albert to the 118 unless Bobby requests him like he did with Eddie, but I think Bobby might have some hesitations about that. They’re already as close as family and sometimes make dangerous decisions because of it. He might feel its better for Albert to be with a different fire house or maybe Chimney would.
But he’s a regular so putting him with the 118 would be the best way to give him screen time
I personally think he’ll be assigned to the 133 since we’ve seen a bit of them this season. I’d love if there was a fun rivalry between the two firehouses (whichever one Albert ends up at.) I’ve said it before that the 118 is probably notorious at this point for the weird situations they get into. The teasing and the taunting would just be so much fun to watch. Albert talking to Chim or Buck and just being like, so the guys told me about this time…
Actually can we take a moment to appreciate that the 118 got ANOTHER firetruck destroyed and this one wasn’t even theirs. The 133 spends FIVE MINUTES with Buck and Eddie and their truck is in shambles.
On a more serious note, we might meet Chimney and Albert’s dad. I’m thinking he’s not going to be thrilled about his youngest joining the fire department and show up to talk some sense into him and scold Chimney for letting him do it.
I’m so confused about how much time has passed? How long does it take to become a firefighter? They must have some sort of plan for him because cutting out him going through training seems like a lost opportunity. It’s a story we haven’t really seen through anything but montages. Is it difficult? Would he try to quit? I’d have liked to see him making the decision in the first place.
putting the rest under here because its really a lot
We’ll also miss Eddie recovering (and Bobby too actually), which I’m a little bummed about but not devastated. It sounds like we won’t see much in the way of the effects of either shooting but can’t do anything about that now unless they flash back and have them work towards that moment on the roof.
My biggest concern with the time jump is missing literally any of Maddie’s story. I don’t know much about PPD or if its called recovery or overcoming it but I do want to see Maddie work through that and Chimney and the others supporting her.
I think her leaving the dispatch center will be temporary but it may take half or all of next season for her to return.
Maybe she’ll take over for May, if she does go off to school
Or May might continue working at Dispatch and going to school.
If she doesn’t go to school Athena is not going to be very happy with her. But maybe we could get Maddie and Josh being big siblings to May which is an underappreciated dynamic. Maybe it will help Maddie cope with how useless she’s feeling with Jee.
I’ll need to rewatch to see if they say what May wants to do but maybe she’ll study journalism or something that will keep her in the loop of the main characters the way it does Taylor.
And speaking of Taylor, she is actually a very interesting character, whether you like her (morally) or not. I think we’ll see more of her in season 5 and I genuinely think she’ll fall hard for Buck. And I think everyone needs to chill about how it’ll destroy her character.  We’ve already established that Taylor is like the female version of Buck (with a bit more sense maybe but a mirror if him non the less). If Buck is allowed to grow and want an actual relationship, is anyone really surprised they’d have Taylor go through that too.
She’s just a few steps behind, like he’s in relationship phase and she’s just coming to terms with her own feelings for him
My big concern, since they like to break Buck’s poor little heart, is that she’ll leave. She’ll get a job opportunity and pick it over Buck. I think it would be a hard decision for her but in character. Or maybe they’ll surprise us and make Buck and Taylor endgame (I know a lot of people don’t want to hear that but I could see it happening that way)
On the flip side I don’t know what’s going to happen with Eddie and Ana. I know she’s pretty much hated but its super unclear what the plan is other than that they’ll eventually break up per what Carla implied. I suspect they’ll be together for a bit of season five until Eddie figures out what’s up with what his heart wants. I don’t think Ana is some awful witch so the break up will probably be mutual or at the very least Ana won’t be surprised.
But hopefully we get more than just that as far as Eddie goes. The episodes we do get that are focused on him are really some of my favorites. They are wrapping up his moving on from Shannon arc which is cool. The trying to be a good father to Christopher will always be there, that’s something that will never change and always be a growing/learning experience.
I’d love to meet one or both of Eddie’s sisters. They don’t have to stick around long term like Albert did but to have them pop up with some crisis would be interesting and we could learn more about Eddie and the dynamic with his family which seems loving but strained.
Maybe we will see Eddie working more with Hen too. I was wondering if they’d make Eddie a full paramedic to take over for her eventually, which I decided they probably won’t do. But one episode of Buck distressed over the fact that he and Eddie wouldn’t be partners anymore would be fun drama.
The two really are just at a loss without each other and I love that. They get so pouty when they’re apart.
I don’t know what other plans they might have for Buck next season. I suspect we’ll see him worrying over Maddie and I’d kill to see him watching Jee-Yun.
I don’t know how old she’ll be because of the time jump but can you imagine Buck watching the baby and it just being an absolute disaster. So he starts calling everyone in a panic and we get firefam taking care of Baby Jee, maybe while Chim and Maddie are at a therapy session or just a weekend away for themselves.
I’m convinced the Baby would love Eddie. I think its just me projecting my desire for Eddie and Maddie to interact more. But like Hen teasing him because of course the baby loves him, all the girls love Eddie, he’s got the pretty face. Buck being super jealous that Jee likes him more. Eddie being genuinely surprised because he felt like such a failure when Chris was a baby.
Denny, Harry and Christopher are all getting older too so there has got to be a story there with at least one, if not all of them. Harry was sidelined this season but I love that kid, he is the spawn of Athena and Michael and we already know he’s a little trouble maker. Match that with Christopher who is sassy and too smart for his own good and Denny who is clearly the good kid of the bunch. I don’t know, it’s another lost opportunity if they don’t do something with that.
They could assign Karen and Hen an older foster kid who’s maybe not such a good influence at first. Unless they opt for just younger ones, I’m not really sure how that works. But they could get one that’s not as easy as nia and they have to work for that bond.
Might be they adopt them at the end
I hope we see more of Hen’s mom and med school friends but not like a crazy amount. The cast is already too big but I love them so an occasional appearance would be welcome.
I love David and Michael too but they always seem like the hardest to work in because, as stated, they are not first responders. David is a doctor though so maybe we’ll see some interaction with him and Hen. And all the Bobby and Michael content is welcome.
I NEED A WEDDING NEXT SEASON! Just pick a pair and marry them please!!! Maddie and Chimney!!! Michael and David!!! Someone, please! Even just a proposal?! Maybe? Please?
And there will be another crossover event which is exciting because I really enjoyed the first one. I wonder if they’ll come to LA this time and what would bring them there. With the scheduling of the shows next season they won’t have to tie them together so much time frame wise. They literally could just be popping in for a visit. I’m not gonna lie when I thought about another crossover I really wanted Bobby the self-taught chef to meet Charles the actual chef but now I can’t have that and it makes me so sad.
Putting all this out there is a really good way to insure it never happens, but still, they seem like logical places to go as of the finale.

I've been rambling so much about the finale today because I have so many thoughts about the growth of the stories of the different characters and/or relationships.
BATHENA 4.13 had them talking about how communication is still an issue for them and with it came the underlying hurt of "Do you not value me enough to include me in your decision making especially when it comes to life-changing choices?". But Athena literally walking through fire for Bobby - and also essentially going against protocol and risking the job she loves - is a loud declaration of how valued Bobby is in her life and how much more important he is.
HEN So Hen's story actually mostly "wraps up" in the previous episode, where we not only see that she has earned the respect of her study group but also her mom. Her struggle to prove herself despite being a "minority" in so many ways is shown here. Hen is a woman who defies odds. She's a well-respected member of the LAFD, despite being a queer woman of color in a boy's club. Now, she's an older medical student who was able to successfully diagnose and seek help for a patient (her mom) better than a real doctor did. She demonstrated an empathy this doctor failed to have and basically assuaged any doubts her mother had of Hen making the right choice by pursuing this career path. She also grew from her struggle of entrusting Nia to someone else, of allowing another person she perceived as failing Nia to love her. While there was closure when they discovered why Nia was separated from her birth mother, this new step of allowing Nia to be a part of their lives again while knowing that it is not in a parental capacity speaks even more of her ability to love deeply. I think with her, it's less growth and more of further proof of Hen's heart and love for people.
MADDIE Her admitting to Sue that something was wrong and then telling Chimney that she needs help is a huge thing. We saw how she was trying to appear fine and put together for him in the previous episode. We also know that she began this show as a "lone wolf" thinking that she couldn't drag others down into her problems with her. (Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Buckley + Doug for being awful examples of "love"). Buck had to convince her to stay and let him be her support system. Chimney had to work to be let in. Maddie is more often seen as the one supporting instead of being supported. So Maddie realizing it's okay to ask for help and also realizing she has people she can count on is the biggest sign of growth from Season 2 Maddie.
CHIMNEY We know Chimney sees Buck as a little brother, especially since he's Maddie's brother; but he also had no say in Buck joining the academy and then the 118. With Albert though, he definitely could have stopped his plans in the tracks especially since it would have felt remarkably similar to Kevin joining the academy and becoming a fellow firefighter. That he supported Albert's firefighting journey (and likely encouraged him every step of the way - we know he and Buck probably did a lot of drills with Albert, with Hen definitely helping with the written parts) feels like a beautiful full-circle journey. Now he gets to do what he loves with a brother again. Also, not to mention how he used to be jealous of Albert but now he lets the boy "follow in his footsteps"? As someone who struggled with constantly comparing herself to her siblings, this is huge. It's damning proof that he no longer sees his brother as the golden child he has to compete with but a person he gets to share the things he is passionate about with.
BUCK + EDDIE (But not in a Buddie way, hear me out. It's worth it). The will is such a game-changer and basically the loudest statement anyone could ever make, both with regards to Buck and Eddie. With Eddie, it is the biggest proof that he has finally found someone he could trust Christopher with (aka his whole world). Eddie's core struggle is similar to Maddie (and most of the 9-1-1 characters), which is being able to let someone else help him as he juggles his different roles. Eddie came into LA feeling like he was drowning, cutting himself of from his former support system because his parents wanted to permanently take Christopher in. That definitely made him more wary of asking for and accepting help. But lawsuit fiasco notwithstanding, there was suddenly a person who provided him with help without removing his autonomy and parental rights. This person introduced him to Carla, got "bring your son to work day" all cleared, built a skateboard for his son, and poured himself out to save Christopher during the tsunami. The will is him acknowledging that after Shannon, after his parents, he can finally relax a bit and not worry about Christopher or even himself. Did you see how unworried Eddie was when he saw Buck the first time he woke up? Did you notice how, after checking that Buck wasn't hurt, he didn't have to even worry about making sure that Buck would take care of Christopher while he was healing up? The guy knew his world was in good hands. Now compare that to the Eddie who was stunned after Bobby let him bring Chris to the station, to the Eddie who hesitated before telling Buck about his son, to the Eddie who debated about letting Shannon back in to Christopher's life again. What growth. With Buck, his central struggle has always been finding people who love him enough to stay. Buck 1.0 was him avoiding commitment because he thinks this is all he can get to temporarily fill the void. Firefighting and the firefam were another set of void-fillers (hence why he fought so hard to come back to the 118). Both the arc with Red and that really damning statement in the crossover (where he actually doubted that Hen would break rules to rescue him for a second) tell us that he's not completely secure about people staying for him. He wasn't enough for his parents, for Abby and Ali, for Maddie (for a while), for his firefam. That's why he thinks he's expendable. Eddie including him in the will takes on a different light when you think about all it's trying to say. It's not even just, "You have people counting on you now." or "You have a Christopher that's going to stay a you stay for him too.". It's also Eddie saying that, "Even if I might leave you physically, I am leaving the last part of me - my life/heart/world - Christopher to you.". Which is a less cheesy, less cringy and much more concrete way of saying "I'm still here in spirit.". Buck finally has two someones who will stay. (And now I think I've just made myself cry).

Summary:
“Please, can you tell us— where’s Eddie?”
Isabel studied Buck’s face for a moment. He seemed almost afraid to hear the answer to his own question. It crossed her mind that this man must care a great deal about Eddie. He had that desperate look to him that she had seen many times before staring back in the mirror, after one of her loved ones had been -once again- in danger. In fact, she had seen it only this morning as she couldn’t stop worrying over her grandson’s fate.
AKA the one where Buck will stop at nothing to save his boys, but will he make it in time to save them both?
Notes:
Knowledge of Star Trek is not necessary to read, understand and enjoy this story. To anyone who might want to skip this fic in fear that they won’t be able to follow the story-line. Do not worry, Star Trek characters will not appear in this fic. The ST-universe is only the backdrop for the 9-1-1 characters to play in. So go ahead, give it a try if you want. :)
The prologue is written in a story-telling style. The rest of the chapters are all written in third person POV.
This is a WIP, but the entire story-line is mapped out and will be written over the next couple of weeks/months. I try to update regularly (about every 3 to 4 weeks or a little more), unless real life steps in an decides to interfere with my schedule. Don’t be afraid to dive in. This fic will be finished. :)
FEEL FREE TO REBLOG IF YOU LIKE THE STORY, SO IT CAN REACH MORE PEOPLE. Thanks!

Buck & Eddie: “Single & Starting Over”
Tumblr media
This post includes detailed analyses on the ending montage scenes for seasons 2-5.  The analysis revealed that each ending scene was designed to provide the audience with insight on where main characters story lines could go in the upcoming season.
Every season ends with a closing scene that appears to include foreshadowing for things that will happen in the next season.  In the past, those scenes have provided the audience with a sneak peek of what’s to come for the main cast members.  Season 2 ended with Athena and Bobby’s wedding, Eddie’s induction as a firefighter and Maddie and Chimney’s relationship strengthened after Doug wreaked havoc on them.  Season 3 ended with Maddie and Chimney learning they were going to be parents, Michael and David’s first date and May’s graduation party.  Season 4 ended with Albert passing his firefighter’s certification exam and Chimney helping Maddie with her depression. Season 5 ended with a Karen and Hen vow renewal, Athena and Bobby preparing to go on a late honeymoon and the full 118 coming together again.
Buck and Eddie were in those closing montage scenes too and their inclusion in the scenes always provided the audience with insight on where their relationship would be going in the next season.  Let’s review their portions of the ending montage scenes for seasons 2-5 to see if any insight can be gained on where they will be in season 6.
Season 2 - 2x18 “This Life We Choose”
Tumblr media
Buck and Eddie’s first meeting in 2x1 “Under Pressure” was filled with animosity and jealousy but only from Buck’s perspective.  He felt threatened by Eddie’s presence and was worried he would be replaced by the new “Beautiful Man” which was how Chimney described Eddie.  Buck’s jealousy soon subsided and he and Eddie become trusted partners after they successfully removed a live grenade from a man’s leg inside the back of an ambulance.  No one knew Eddie had a son named Christopher until 2x2 “7.1” and that’s because Buck saw Eddie frantically checking his phone which caused Buck to ask, “Who are you trying to get a hold of?” and Eddie responded, “My son. I’m trying to reach my son”.  Eddie showed Buck a picture of Christopher and he said, “Super adorable, I-I love kids” and Eddie said, “I love this one”.  Eddie’s wife returned in 2x7 “Haunted” and Buck starting dating again in 2x8 “Buckctually”.  In 2x10 “Merry X-mas” an elf’s comment gave the audience its first canon confirmation that Eddie, Buck and Christopher were to be seen as a family when they both took Christopher to see Santa Klaus.  The elf told Buck after Eddie and Christopher walked away, “You two have an adorable son” and he replied, “Thank You”.  In 2x17 “Careful What you Wish For” Eddie’s wife died and in 2x18 “This Life We Choose” Buck’s girlfriend broke up with him after his leg got crushed by an exploding ladder truck.
At the end of 2x18, Eddie’s probationary period was officially declared over by Captain Nash and he was welcomed into the LAFD as ‘Firefighter Diaz’.  The 118 and their families were present for the celebration including Eddie’s.  Scenes of Buck, Eddie and Christopher that were included in the montage were of Eddie and Christopher eating cake and Buck and Eddie hugging.  Their hug provided the audience with a glimpse of what their partnership would be like in season 3. Remember Buck’s left leg was in a cast after the ladder truck explosion and Eddie said things were only “Almost” back to normal.  He said it after Hen said things were “finally back to normal” when the department allowed Bobby to return to the 118 after lifting his suspension.  Eddie’s comment referred to the fact that Buck wasn’t back at work, which meant he missed his partner. They had become extremely close and the hug they shared illustrated how much they needed and missed each other.  Things for the two of them wouldn’t be normal for a long time but their bond in the next season wouldn’t be severed just like the hug they shared during the montage.  They were both single at the end of the season.
Tumblr media
Season 3 – 3x18 “What’s Next?”
Tumblr media
Buck requalified to be a firefighter in 3x1 “Kids Today” after he passed his recertification exam and the 118 threw a party for him to celebrate.  Eddie was the first person to run out from the crowd to hug Buck and the rest of the 118 followed.  During that celebration, Christopher gave Buck a handmade card that he drew and it included the words, ‘dear Buck, you’re an awesome firefighter. Love Christopher’.  Eddie was standing behind Christopher as he presented Buck with the card.  Even while inside of the party, they were shown as a separate familial entity within the 118.  Buck coughed up blood during the party and Eddie panicked a little bit. After he was taken to the hospital it was determined he had a pulmonary embolism which prevented him from being able to return to work.  At the end of that episode, Eddie took Christopher to Buck’s loft and he told him to take Christopher out and have some fun.  Then he told Buck, “He never feels sorry for himself”.  Buck took Christopher to the Pier and that’s when it happened, a Tsunami hit.  They got separated and by the end of 3x3 “The Searchers”, Buck had to tell Eddie he couldn’t find him.  Christopher was found and Buck collapsed after he spent the whole day and most of the night searching for him.  Buck wallowed in his depression after losing Christopher but Eddie brought Christopher back to Buck and told him “There’s no one in this world I trust with my son more than you”.
In 3x4 “Triggers” Buck learned Eddie had a new partner at work, Lena and he was pissed because of it.  Eddie didn’t tell Buck about Lena or Christopher’s nightmares.  Buck thought Bobby was replacing him and after he had dinner at Bobby and Athena’s he filed a lawsuit against Bobby and the LAFD to get his job back.  Eddie was pissed when he learned he couldn’t talk to Buck and in 3x5 “Rage” he told Lena after she bailed him out of jail “I can’t talk to Buck”.  She introduced Eddie to an illegal fight club which was a super bad idea since Eddie had anger issues.  This was the same episode where Eddie yelled at Buck in the grocery store because he was missing Buck like crazy.  But instead of telling him that he used Christopher as a shield to hide his true feelings.  Buck was allowed to return to work in 3x6 “Monsters”, but Eddie was still upset and would barely talk to him.  Buck made Eddie talk to him and by the end of their conversation Buck had completed his first apology.  In 3x9 “Fallout”, Buck apologized again but that time he specifically said he was sorry for not being there when Eddie and Christopher needed him. Eddie looked like he was going to cry but they made up in the KITCHEN and that’s when they had a very erotic conversation (read blog post “Buck & Eddie: Their First Time Being In Love” for more analysis regarding this scene). Once they made up their relationship grew stronger as they continued to support and encourage each other.  After Christopher had an accident on a skateboard at school in 3x12 “Fools”, Buck and Eddie worked together to find a solution.  They built him an adaptable skateboard and took Christopher to the park so that he could ride it.  In 3x15 “Eddie Begins” Buck thought he had lost Eddie forever when a well collapsed on top of him.  Buck tried to dig Eddie out with his bare hands while he screamed and cried for him.   Eddie made it out of the well safely and for the remainder of the season, they were inseparable until 3x18 “What’s Next?” when Buck’s ex-girlfriend showed up.
It was a coincidence when Eddie met Buck’s ex-girlfriend while they were at the train accident and when Buck walked up he almost lost it when he came face to face with her.  Eddie was cautious but still there by Buck’s side for support.  After Eddie walked away Buck told her he would bring her fiancée back to her and he promised.  Eddie got pissed when Buck was willing to risk his own life to save her fiancée and he yelled at him and said “Buck Stop! I know you made a promise”.  He was angry at Buck because he was being reckless and Eddie thought they had moved passed that stage.  After they saved her fiancée, Eddie asked Buck “Are you ok?” and Buck replied, “What’s Next?”.  The ending montage included scenes of Buck and Christopher, Eddie and Christopher, and Buck and Eddie.  Those scenes provided the audience with a glimpse of their relationship for season 4. Buck and Christopher’s relationship strengthened during the Tsunami but in season 4, the trust Christopher and Buck had in each other was separate from the relationships of Eddie, Buck and Christopher and Eddie and Christopher.   Also Buck and Eddie’s relationship would be tested far beyond the lawsuit, arguments and make-ups that followed it by the end of season 4. Even though the trust and love they had for each other was strong, they would be faced with another real possibility of losing each other.  They both were single at the end of this season too.
Tumblr media
Season 4 – 4x14 “Survivors”
Tumblr media
In 4x3 “Future Tense”, a Buckley-Diaz family night happened with Buck and Christopher playing video games while Eddie was busy unplugging and deactivating all of the smart technological items that were inside of his house.  After he unplugged the video game console, Christopher asked Buck “Can we go to your house and play video games?”, Buck looked at Eddie for his approval and Eddie looked at him like ‘you know better’, then Buck told Christopher “Sorry kid, looks like we’ll be playing it old school for a while”.   Buck’s idiot parents came to L.A. in 4x4 “9-1-1 What’s Your Grievance” and stayed until the end of 4x5 “Buck Begins”.  During their visit Buck finally learned a family secret regarding the reason behind him being born and it almost broke him.  Eddie was there by his side supporting him and explaining that he wasn’t wrong for being upset if his parents made him feel a certain way.  Eddie started dating again in 4x6 “Jinx” and after he finally told Christopher about it in 4x8 “Breaking Point”, Christopher got upset, ran away and took an Uber to Buck’s loft.  Eddie panicked when he couldn’t find Christopher inside of his house but Buck called while Eddie was panicking and explained Christopher was there with him.  Buck told Christopher he ‘wouldn’t ever leave him’ and Christopher told him he was a “good friend”.   Buck tried to start dating again not long after Eddie started dating; however the woman he was pursuing kept friend zoning him. In 4x10 “Parenthood” while on a call, two parents were fighting about their son and the dad said the mother always makes him be the ‘bad cop’.  Chimney asked, “Can’t you both be good cops?” and both Eddie and Buck said in unison “NO!”.  In 4x12 “Treasure Hunt”, Buck partnered with the woman he had been pursuing unbeknownst to Eddie.  Therefore when Eddie asked Buck to partner with him, Buck explained he already made an agreement with her causing Eddie to give Buck the puppy dog sad face.  Buck relented and said that Eddie could join their team.
Eddie received a call from a boy he met in 4x13 “Suspicion” before the start of their shift and Buck went with Eddie to save Charlie.  They met the 133 there and they provided medical care for both Charlie and his mother. Once they were preparing them for transport, a sniper fired a round that hit Eddie in his right shoulder and the blood from his shoulder was sprayed across Buck’s face.  Buck was in shock and Eddie fell to the ground.  In 4x14 “Survivors”, Captain Mehta pushed Buck to the ground to prevent him from being shot too.  Buck pulled Eddie underneath the fire truck to save his life and he was in shock until he saw Eddie being rolled into the hospital.  Buck went to Christopher so that he could tell him about Eddie and he broke down while doing so which caused Christopher to provide comfort to him.   The woman Buck had been pursuing kissed him and ran right before Eddie woke up and after Buck got the call that Eddie was awake, he ran to his side.  Buck told Eddie ‘It would have been better for Christopher if he had been shot instead of Eddie’.  A few days later the woman Buck had been pursuing finally said she wanted to be with him.  While Eddie was being discharged, he told Buck he changed his will and named Buck to be Christopher’s legal guardian.
The ending montage included scenes of Buck opening Eddie’s front door and there was a small welcome home party for him inside.  Eddie kissed Christopher on the top of the head and Buck fondly watched them from the still opened front door.  Both women they were dating were there too which provided the audience with insight on how season 5 would proceed for Buck and Eddie.  That scene showed the audience there would be people involved in Buck and Eddie’s self-made family that didn’t belong.  These scenes were a precursor to the foolery that would take place during season 5.  Both of them ended the season in relationships with women while they were still linked as partners both inside and outside of the firehouse.
Tumblr media
Season 5 – “Starting Over”
Tumblr media
Panic attacks were prominent for Eddie at the start of season 5.  He had one attack in 5x1 “Panic” and two more in 5x2 “Desperate Times”. He tried to hide them from Buck but as usual Buck made Eddie talk to him about it after Buck learned Eddie had been to the hospital to see a cardiologist prior to the Blackout. Eddie told Buck he believed his girlfriend was causing the panic so Buck told him he should end it with her.  The real reason for the attacks stemmed from Eddie believing he was going to lose Buck. His girlfriend wasn’t even there for the second attack.  Eddie explained to the team while they were on the firetruck that Buck takes Christopher to the zoo all the time which further solidified the strength of his “self-made family” when compared to the “ready made family” everyone thought he was building with his girlfriend.  Eddie broke up with his girlfriend in 5x3 “Desperate Measures” but Buck continued whatever it was he was doing with that woman he was practically living with.  Buck tried to transfer out of the 118 in 5x5 “Peer Pressure” but Eddie told him “you’re stuck with us”.  In 5x6 “Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1”, Eddie and Buck were held hostage by two escaped convicts and when Mitchell shot himself in the head, Buck thought Eddie had been shot.  The wedge from the shooting was pushing Buck and Eddie further apart.  In 5x10 “Wrapped in Red” Eddie told Buck about Christopher’s breakdown and how he smashed the gingerbread house.  Then Eddie made a decision to quit his job without talking to Buck before he announced it.  He said he was doing it for Christopher but the real reason was because he was scared too.
In 5x11 “Outside Looking In” Eddie started his new job as the LAFD Liaison and had an office in the Dispatch Center.  He helped the 118 with a car bomb call and was told by Josh afterwards that he just was a ‘guest at Dispatch’.  Eddie was already feeling alone and he further isolated himself after he went to the bar to celebrate with the 118 and he saw Buck laughing and having a good time.   He had a breakdown in 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia” and Christopher called Buck to help.  In that same episode, the woman Buck was dating moved in after he asked her to in 5x11 following his reversion back to Buck 1.0 when he kissed a woman firefighter.  He later learned she was going to be working with him at the 118.  Buck stayed with Eddie and Christopher in 5x14 “Dumb Luck” and took care of them both.  He gave Eddie a drawing of his heart after one of Eddie’s therapy sessions and he organized a visit to the Equine Therapy center for Eddie and Christopher.  In 5x16 “May Day” Buck and Eddie were reunited as partners for the day by Captain Nash.  As usual they worked together seamlessly.  In 5x17 “Hero Complex” Eddie went to Texas to reconcile with his father and Buck realized he still couldn’t trust his girlfriend.
In 5x18 “Starting Over” Buck finally ended his relationship with that woman and Eddie returned to the 118 by the end of the episode.  The closing montage included Buck breathing a sigh of relief after he got his key back from that woman and Eddie sliding down the fireman’s pole and joining the team to board the firetrucks.  The final shot of the entire 118 squad was telling with regards to Buck and Eddie. They were both in the back of Captain Nash nearest to his right side.  The look on Buck’s face explained a lot.  He smiled at Eddie as if to say, ‘You’re back by my side and I don’t have to worry about you anymore because I can see you every day at work’.  While Eddie was looking straight ahead as if to say, ‘I can still do this even though I’m scared, I believe things will be ok’.  Of course their partnership at work hasn’t been affected but the fear they have associated with losing one another has yet to be addressed.  The distance between the two of them still exists and it will probably continue until they address the things they haven’t talked about.  They are working together again but that doesn’t resolve all of their unspoken issues.  After the shooting it was clear something shifted but they haven’t talked about it. Remember Eddie has only discussed his Army related trauma with Frank, therefore he still has a lot of firefighter related trauma to unpack in therapy.  Also Buck stopped going to therapy with Dr. Copeland in season 4, so it will be interesting to see if he starts therapy again in season 6.  Maybe they can do joint therapy sessions with Frank so that he could take them back to the street where the shooting occurred.  He did that with Maddie in season 3 when he took her back to the woods where she killed Doug.  Hopefully that will be included in season 6 since they are both Single and Starting Over.
Tumblr media
Did the season 5 montage include enough scenes that included Buck and Eddie to speculate about their relationship for season 6?  If so how will it be further defined in the upcoming season?  Based on the ending montage for season 5, they will both be single and possibly on the road to discussing the things that kept them separated for the majority of 5A (the well, the shooting and the will.  Read “Buck & Eddie:  The Will Reveal & Legal Guardianship” for more information about why they aren’t ready to talk about it yet).
