ARCHIVIST WASP CHARACTER DESIGNS
I’ve been working on this for a while - character designs for every described character in AW (/Firebreak)! Most are barely described so it was a fun challenge. I’ll post them individually over the next couple weeks!

Friendship Showdown: Preliminary Round #31
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Lilith Clawthorne & Hooty (The Owl House): They were a friendship that absolutely nobody expected, but it ended up being really wholesome. They call each other Lulu and Hootsifer. When they’re apart, they write letters to each other as pen pals. Hooty is a mysterious but powerful being that is never explained within canon, and Lilth is just some nerd. However, she’s one of the only people who will take Hooty seriously. When the apocalypse comes, Hooty sacrifices himself to protect Lilith without a second thought. Their reunion is really sweet. They’re great!
Foster and The Ghost (Archivist Wasp): Where do I even start. (Spoilers ahead obviously) They’re the only two survivors of a lab experiment to create supersoldiers, and they survived largely because of the bond between them. Eventually, Foster of them went rogue and the ghost had more reservations and ended up turning Foster into the government, where she was tortured and eventually lost her memory and asked him to kill her because she still just knew that she trusted him, even with no memory, and he refused (one of his greatest regrets). Years and years later, after the downfall of his entire society and also after his death, he tried for his entire afterlife to find her. He forgot his name but never hers. He eventually found Wasp/Isabel and searched across the entire ghost dimension for Foster with Wasp. There’s a metaphor in the book that they’re like Carrion Boy and Ember Girl- essentially, clashing personalities but their fates are so intertwined that they’re allies or enemies but never apart. They’re like the embodiment of the idea that the only thing worse than being with someone is being apart from them. And the whole thing is platonic too.
Sora Harewataru/Cure Sky and Tsubasa Yunagi/Cure Wing (Hirogaru Sky Precure): no propaganda submitted

whoo, I finished reading my second* book of the year! Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace, it was really good! A really unique post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy (it's really a solid blend of the two), I absolutely loved the worldbuilding. I'll definitely have to buy the sequel and read it, I think I'm going to move onto another book I already have but once I get a copy I'll read it.
I've had it for years (possibly since it was published actually...), but between moving houses, going to college, two different apartments, things getting boxed and unboxed and put into new boxes none of which were properly labeled... I honestly thought it got donated until it turned up in a box of books my parents brought me that had still been in a closet. For some reason playing Sable really put me in the mindset to read it and I'm glad I didn't have to find another copy haha
*(or possibly first, I started the first book the last week of December but I read less than half of it before the new year, so I'm counting it towards 2024 lol)

Season 2 of Shadow and Bone sold me 1000% more on my headcast for Freddy Carter as the Ghost/22. He's got the intensity, the depth, the tightly bottled Feelings, the unhinged bloodlust, the economy of motion/microexpression game, the cheekbones, the eyes, and the aroace vibes

What I really love about the Archivist Wasp books by Nicole Kornher-Stace is the way that the genre mash-up is tied together by characters. The ghost is a supersoldier trained from birth, a character who resides in a science fiction story. Wasp/Isabel is a priestess-archivist who hunts ghosts and her world is a cultic, fantasy-tinged dystopian where the old order gave way to a new age of hauntings and constellation-gods. And they find each other on an underworld quest, a katabasis, a kind of story that calls back to Greek and Roman epics. They’re characters from two different genres who find each other in a third one, but they ultimately come together because I think they understand each other on some deep, personal level. They’ve both been raised in ruthless worlds and thrust into dehumanizing roles–supersoldier, archivist–that have attempted to strip them of their agency, their personhood, their identity, and even their names, but they fight back against that, uncovering their pasts and hope for a better future on their quest. Wasp/Isabel and the ghost originate from somewhat different genres, but they reach across the gap between them and clasp hands because they’ve been acting out the same story in different ways.
Alternately, I’ve described Archivist Wasp as “What if you put Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mad Max: Fury Road, and a platonic version of Hadestown into a blender and it works because the real magic is the friends we made along the way” and I still stand by that.

a specific genre I call disabled girl (usually leg and/or facial scars) surviving mostly on her own in the wild/postapoc wasteland/dystopia with a distinctive jacket and weapon
I AM STILL ALIVE / a girl gets sent to live with her survivalist father in the Canadian wilderness, but when their cabin burns down she has to survive the winter
ARCHIVIST WASP / ghosthunter priestess from in a postapocalyptic cult helps a ghost find his friend so she can escape
THE BUTTERFLY ASSASSIN / traumatised teenage ex-assassin trying to live a normal life in a walled city run by assassin guilds
THE GIRL IN RED / a girl travelling to her grandmother’s house after being separated from her family in the apocalypse after a viral pandemic
RADIANT / TOWERS TRILOGY* / girl in the underbelly of a postapocalyptic dystopian world finds a powerful ghost and they're both hunted for their power
(*I actually can't quite remember if she's disabled or just injuried at various points, all the others are def disabled tho)
and none of them have romances :)

ARCHIVIST WASP CHARACTER DESIGNS part 2
isabel, and some upstarts!
wasp: you’ve already seen her many times. I just did a couple views, from each book! she’s the most described character, mostly because of all the narrative-relevant parts of her appearance. basically the only thing I have elected to ignore is that in catchkeep she mentions ‘someone wearing all black doesn’t mean anything. I wear all black’ lmao i simply want to embrace the brown postapoc palette, okay. also it’s quite based on my cosplay which were clothes I already owned
upstarts: this is basically all the ones who have some sort of description, there’s a few other significant upstarts in latchkey but.....no mention of what they look like.
young!sairy is there as an example of the original upstart garb: “undyed, wide-sleeved shirts, wide-legged long pants, and cloth shoes”. in latchkey it’s mentioned that some have changed or dyed theirs (Sairy’s blue), and some got rid of it altogether, so I tried to reflect that. I probably made her age difference between the two books a liiiiitle too much, but we can just say that the younger one is pre: book 1 or something 😂
all but meg & sairy’s hair is mentioned in some form; glory, lissa, and jen’s body types are mentioned; sairy lissa jen & meg’s skin tones (in relation, at least); and most one or two other details that I included. Otherwise I just tried to vary them a bunch!

“I’ve wanted to kill you as long as I can remember,” Wasp said softly. “Today, I was ready to say what I just said, tell the upstarts you’re mine, and cut you down.” She shrugged.”:But I’m looking at them, and they’re looking at you, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen them want something so badly. And, well, nobody’s really ever given them anything before.” She turned to the upstarts, their knife-hands and their hungry eyes. “I changed me mind. He’s yours.”
