Eddie liked you. He liked you a lot.
It bordered on the edge of obsession sometimes, just how much he liked you. He would never admit that to anyone else, though.
It was so bad in highschool, that he genuinely thought that maybe he had failed some of his classes because he had been staring and daydreaming about you. In reality it was most likely because he had a hard time with math, but he still did spend a lot of time thinking about you. What it would be like if he finally approached you and admitted the way you made him feel.
You graduated and he didn’t. He thought that would be the perfect time to get over you and move on.  To his surprise though, one of the freshmen he took under his wing was your stepbrother.
Dustin brought you up in conversation a lot. A curse and a blessing for poor Eddie.
He saw you in passing sometimes after you graduated. Sometimes you would pick up Dustin, or be at the Henderson house when Eddie was dropping him off after Hellfire. You were in college now, though, so the sightings of you were few and far between. Eventually, you stopped coming around the Henderson house to Eddie’s dismay. Dustin had mentioned that you were too busy to stop by anymore and could only make it by during the holidays.
Eddie avoided asking about you to keep his infatuation secret, only gathering information when it was freely offered to him.
Sometimes Eddie would wonder how different his life would be if he had spoken up in school and asked you on a date. Would the both of you be happy together right now, living a dream life? Eddie always considered you the one that got away. Even as the years passed by he never did forget about you.
Tumblr media
Eddie was in his mid 20’s now with a job at the local mechanic shop off main street. He had a trailer to himself, across the park from his uncles, now that he was an adult. Life at the trailer park alone was quiet and normal as always. Everyone who had lived there had already been there for years, so he knew his neighbors well.
It was a sunny summer morning when the moving van came barreling through the gravel drive of the trailer park, hitting every pothole that the park owners never bothered to fix.
Eddie was curious since his neighbors moved out who would take their spot. He hoped they wouldn’t mind that he played his music too loud while he worked on his car out in the driveway sometimes, or think he was the devil based on his choice of clothing and music.
The truck parked, lurching on the uneven ground. Eddie watched as the metal door swung open and two pairs of legs popped out. He leaned forward on the front porch couch, trying to catch a better glimpse. He knew Wayne would want to gossip later during their nightly talks and if Eddie didn’t have all the details right the old man would just come down here himself.
Eddie’s eyes followed the legs, traveling up your body to your face. His eyes grew wide and his heart stuttered. His lit cigarette fell into his lap. “Shit,” he hissed, frantically picking it up before it did any damage.
You glanced up at the noise, making direct eye contact with Eddie. A wide smile grew on your face and you gave a happy wave.
“Eddie? Is that you?” You asked, using your hand to shield the sun out of your eyes so you could see him.
Eddie wished he could melt into the old wooden planks under his feet. You looked beautiful standing there smiling up at him. You wandered closer, abandoning the open door to the moving truck behind you.
Eddie cleared his throat. “Y-yep. It’s me.”
Your grin grew miraculously wider and Eddie thought he was going to pass out. It had been years since he had seen you up close at this point and you still looked just as good as you did in highschool.
“I can’t believe it. I mean Dustin mentioned you lived here but I didn’t know we were gonna be neighbors!” You said cheerfully, bouncing up the porch steps towards him.
Eddie stood up, because he didn’t know what else to do.
“What are you doing here? I thought you’d be living in some big city by now?” Eddie didn’t mean for his words to come out like that. He thought that they sounded lighthearted but the smile dropping on your face had him second guessing himself.
“Yeah. Life happens I guess,” you said with a forced smile.
There was a brief awkward silence before Eddie spoke up again. “Do you need any help?”
A loud engine and music cut out Eddie’s words as a blue Camaro pulled into the lot, revving its engine obnoxiously. Eddie recognized the car but couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
You went to scurry off the porch. “See you later, Eddie!” You called, rushing to the side of the moving van.
Your reaction bothered Eddie but he didn’t know why. You had started the conversation so cheerful and then he watched the joy drain from your face, like being near him was scary. The feeling made Eddie’s heart drop. Were you scared of him?
The car parked beside the moving van. Eddie dropped his cigarette again, now burnt to nothing but ash, when Billy Hargrove stepped out.
You greeted him with a kiss. Eddie thought he was going to throw up his breakfast right into the grass. There was no fucking way someone as kind as you ended up with Billy fucking Hargrove. Eddie had imagined throughout the years what would happen if he ever ran into you again, he just didn’t ever expect you to be taken by someone else when it happened.
Eddie couldn’t watch as you started moving your belongings into the trailer with Billy. He went inside his own trailer and locked the door.
Tumblr media
“Fancy seeing you here,” Eddie said as Henderson approached his work station. “Don’t tell me your car broke down again?”
Dustin shook his head, looking a little pale. “I need to talk to you.”
Eddie straightened at Dustin’s distressed expression. Even though Dustin was grown now, Eddie still felt an urge to protect him. Eddie motioned over to his boss that he was taking a break and led Dustin through the back door of the building where only the employees parked so they would have some sense of privacy.
“What’s wrong?” Eddie asked as soon as the door was shut behind them.
“Have you seen my sister?” Dustin asked, using the toe of his shoe to push some gravel around.
“Yeah. I saw her yesterday when she was moving in. Why?”
“Can you keep an eye on her for me?” Dustin asked, looking up at Eddie now with a pleading expression.
“Why? What’s wrong?”
Dustin shook his head, looking up at Eddie now. “I don’t like Billy.”
Eddie scoffed. “Yeah. Who does? The guy was an asshole in highschool.”
“Yeah, well that hasn’t changed,” Dustin explained in a mumble.
“What do you mean?” Eddie asked. It wasn’t a surprise but he needed to know if this meant what he thought it meant.
“I mean. He’s used up all her money and she lost her apartment. That’s why she’s back in Hawkins and moving into the trailer park. I didn’t know because I’ve been at school but he’s not nice to her. She’s come home to my house a few times crying until she eventually goes back to him. My mom said it’s just regular relationship drama but it doesn’t feel right.”
Eddie processed the information he was given for a bit. He wanted to jump in his car and drive back to the trailer park right at that moment to check on you. But he knew that if he came on strong it would only push you away. “I’ll listen out for her Dustin.”
Dustin visibly relaxed. “If you see anything, call me.”
Tumblr media
You were out on your porch when Eddie got home that evening.
You smiled and waved. What Dustin had told him about your relationship with Billy stayed in the back of his mind for the whole day.
Billy’s car wasn’t in the driveway, so he thought it would be a good time to talk to you.
“Hey,” you greeted as Eddie approached.
“Hey. How’s the moving in going?”
“Good. I’m mostly unpacked now. I didn’t have that much stuff to begin with,” you told him. Eddie wondered if Billy was the reason you didn’t have that much stuff but he didn’t voice it.
Eddie hummed in response as he leaned against the railing to the steps as nonchalantly as possible. He could feel his pulse hammering in his chest and he felt like he was in highschool again asking you if you had the answers to last night's homework.
“Everything else okay over here?” Eddie asked, suddenly finding his rings more interesting than anything else around him.
When you didn’t answer, Eddie chanced a look up at your face. Your head was tilted and you were squinting your eyes at him like you couldn’t quite figure out what he meant by the question. Eddie felt like you knew what he was alluding to.
“Everythings fine,” you said slowly, pushing yourself up from the plastic chair. “You should go. Billy will be home soon,” you said before going inside without another word.
Eddie kicked himself the whole short walk back to his trailer. He just hoped that he wasn’t stupid enough to cause you to pull yourself away.
Tumblr media
Eddie didn’t ever see anything but he heard it about a week later. You and Billy both came and went from the trailer park without incident. The few times Eddie had seen you, you avoided eye contact at all costs. Eddie wondered if it was because Billy was around both times or if you hated him now.
Trailer walls were thin so he always heard quite a bit of his neighbors' lives. Usually, he would just ignore it and move on. But he couldn’t ignore this.
He was smoking his evening cigarette, barefooted with his hair still wet from his after work shower. He was just about to put it out and head inside for the night when a smashing plate caught his attention. Ears perked, he listened for where it came from. That’s when the yelling started in your trailer.
Eddie got up without thinking. Gravel cut into his bare feet as he crossed from his lot to yours.
“You think you can just break up with me?! After everything I do for you?!”
Eddie didn’t waste any time yanking the trailer door open. You stood up against the wall, tears streaming down your face. A broken plate laid on the floor beside you with a dent in the wall beside your head from where it hit. Billy stood across from you, a bag packed in his clenched hand.
Your wide eyed stare met with Eddie’s. You shook your head slightly, silently pleading for him to go.
Eddie saw red. “Did you fucking throw that at her?!” He seethed.
Billy whipped around, making eye contact with Eddie. “Get the fuck out and mind your business, freak.”
“Don’t call him that,” you snapped, straightening your shoulders.
Billy let out a humorless laugh and pointed his thumb at Eddie. “This why you want me to leave? Because of him.”
“Does it matter? Just go,” you begged.
Eddie made his way closer to you, placing himself between you and Billy in case something else got thrown or he wanted to lash out. Eddie knew he wouldn’t win a fight against Billy but he would try. Eddie knew Billy’s type though, he wanted to beat on someone he knew he could win with. The rumors about Eddie being a fighter around town were too strong for Billy to take the chance. Eddie silently thanked who ever started that rumor.
Billy scoffed, tossing the duffel bag over his shoulder. He exited the trailer with a loud slam of the door, causing the walls to shake. Eddie wasted no time locking the door behind him in case he changed his mind and decided to come back in. Neither of you breathed until you heard his car start and pull away.
“You okay? Did he hurt you?” Eddie asked, assessing you for injury.
You quickly shook your head. “No. I’m sorry you had to see that, Eddie,” you apologized. Eddie could see the walls coming up around you.
“Don’t apologize. Be careful. I’m gonna pick up the plate,” Eddie warned as he picked up the sharp, shattered pieces. “Do you think he’ll come back tonight?”
You shook your head. “No. He’ll go stay the night with some girl in Indianapolis for a week and when he gets bored he’ll come back. That’s why he left so easily. He actually wanted to leave but didn’t want me to think I was in control or something,” you said calmly.
Eddie wondered how often this had happened for you to have it understood like a science. He looked down at the pieces of broken plate in his hands, he wouldn’t say that that was him leaving easily.
“I can go and get some new locks for the door in the morning,” Eddie offered. “If you don’t want him to come back this time.”
“That would be great, Eddie. Thank you so much,” you said.
Eddie noticed the way you kept glancing at the door despite telling him that Billy wouldn’t come back that night.
“Do you want me to stay? I can sleep on the couch just in case?” Eddie asked, not wanting to leave you here alone just in case.
You eventually agreed and called it a night, but not before blocking the front door with a chair just in case.
Billy never came back that night, but like clockwork, showed up a week later trying to get back in.
You didn’t let him in this time, instead flexing that new restraining order to have him removed from the property by Hopper.
“Thank you, Eddie,” you said suddenly one evening during your daily talks. It had been about two months since Billy left and you were doing good. Dustin was even able to come over to the trailer to see you, something you never let him do before.
“For what?” Eddie asked.
“For looking out for me,” you shrugged.
Eddie cleared his throat. “You know, I’ll always look out for you. If you want.”
You raised your eyebrows and did your best to hold in your laugh.
“What?” Eddie questioned, feeling insecure now.
“Are you finally admitting you have a crush on me?” You teased.
Eddie dropped his head in his hands. Of course you knew. And now you were going to laugh at him.
“It’s okay,” you said in a soothing voice. “I guess I can admit that I have one on you too.”
“Really?” Eddie was shocked.
You placed a quick kiss on his cheek. “I’ll see you around, Eddie. Same time tomorrow?”
Eddie nodded, speechless as he watched you walk back over to your trailer. His brain caught up with his body as he jumped up from his seat and ran after you. He wasn’t going to let you get away this time without asking you out on a date.
And when you said yes, Eddie realized the wait had been worth it.

Bill and Frank allowed us to crash at their house for the night, which we gratefully accepted. This would allow us to get some proper rest for our trek back to the Boston QZ. Joel and I ended up in the same room together.
Lips were against lips, tongues were exploring each other, hands were roaming. I wanted him so badly. Joel was sat up against the headboard as I straddled his outstretched legs. Instead of using my words, I grinded myself down against his lap, hinting to him what I wanted. He pulled away, leaving us both to catch our breath as he spoke.
“I would love to, sweetheart. We just can’t… not here. The walls are too thin. They’d hear everything. I’m sorry.” He said, cupping my cheek.
“Do you know where Bill keeps the keys to the truck?” I asked.
“You’re not really suggesting that… are you?” He asked, shocked that I would suggest such a thing.
“I’m not as innocent as you may think, Joel.” I said with a wink before climbing off of his lap.
“Come on.” I said, grabbing his hand.
“I don’t know where the keys are.” He argued but stood up still.
“That’s fine, I do, I was just asking.” I said, pulling him by his arm over to the door.
I quietly opened the door to our room and peeked out. Coast was clear. We slipped out of the room and down the hall. As we quickly snuck down the stairs, I glanced back over my shoulder at Joel. He had a huge smile on his face as we snuck around like a couple of horny teens trying to get passed parents.
The keys were on a hook in the kitchen. I grabbed them and held them in my closed fist so they wouldn’t jingle and make noise. Then we slipped out the back door and over to the garage. We got to the truck and unlocked it.
“How is this even going to work?” Joel asked.
“You’ve never had car sex?” I asked a little surprised.
“You have?” He asked, wide-eyed.
I just smiled at him and opened the door to the backseat.
“Get in.” I said, smacking his ass as he stepped by.
I climbed in behind and shut the door behind me. Then, I turned to crank the window handle to roll it down some.
“Crack that one too. It’s gonna get hot.”
He did as I instructed and then turned to me, “Now what?”
“Now, you’re going to fuck me.” I said.
That was all it took for his lips to be on mine once again as I turned in my seat to face him. His hands found the bottom hem of my shirt.
“Off?” He asked, between kisses.
I nodded and he sat up for some for him to take it off. I took that opportunity to grab his belt and give it a good tug.
“Off.” I didn’t bother asking, they needed to come off, the tent he was pitching in those jeans was mocking me and I had to see it for myself.
He pulled away completely and sat back to get his jeans and underwear off. I took the time to do the same. Once we were both bare, he turned back to me and got up on his knees. I laid back as best as I could without having my back or head digging in or hitting the door too much.
“You’re sure about this sweetheart?” He asked one last time.
“Positive.” I nodded.
He leaned back over to kiss me once again as his hand traveled down my body. His hand ran through my fold.
“Fuck, sweetheart, you’re already soaking.” He said in slight awe.
He took the slickness that was now on his hand and rubbed it up and down his hard cock, giving me a good view of it.
It was the nicest dick I had ever seen. I was a little surprised to see how nicely kept he was. Not that I thought or cared otherwise. Before I could stop myself, I was reaching for it. It wasn’t until Joel gently grabbed my wrist to stop me that I realized what I was doing.
“Not this time, sweetheart. I want to make sure I’ll last, don’t think I would with your hand wrapped around my cock.” He said.
“Next time?”
“Next time.” He nodded before leaning down and connecting his lips to mine, “Ready?”
After I gave him a nod, and without removing his lips, he lined himself up and gently worked his way into me. He bottomed out with one last roll of his hips that nearly left me breathless.
“Fuck, Joel, please just fuck me.” I sighed, against his lips.
He gave me one last kiss before pulling back to get better leverage to thrust into me. They started out gentle but quickly grew faster and harder. It hardly took him any time to find that sweet spot deep inside.
“You know you look so good like this, with my cock buried deep inside your cunt.” He said teeth gritted slightly.
“You, don’t look half bad yourself.” I managed to say back.
That seemed to spur him on as I felt his cock twitch slightly.
“I’m not going to last much longer, sweetheart. Where?” He asked.
“Not in. Anywhere but in.” I said, not wanting to take any risk. We had no form of protection in use right now.
I was close to my own release when he pulled out and came all over my torso. Then, not even a second later he was using his fingers to help me finish, pumping them in and out, curling them just right to send me absolutely spiraling.
“Fuck!” I moaned, dropping my head back, and smacking it on the door. I couldn’t find it in me to care though, not with the way Joel was hitting the right spot every time.
His name left my lips in a moan as I came all over his fingers. When my walls stopped squeezing around his fingers, he carefully removed them and then stuck them in his mouth to clean them off. Once he was done his eyes focussed in on the mess he had made on me.
“Oh, sweetheart. Here, let me get you cleaned up.” He said as he pulled his pants back up.
Then, he reached into the front seat where his shirt had been tossed and used that to clean off my stomach. Slowly we both found our clothes and put them on. Joel ended up just tossing the shirt to a random pile of junk in the corner saying he could get another one. We quietly made our way back to the house and slipped inside. Just as I was putting the keys back the kitchen light flipped on causing Joel and me to freeze.
“In our truck, really?” Frank asked as we both turned around.
I was trying not to laugh.
“You better of cleaned up, if Bill finds out, you won’t be allowed back here.” He said only partly joking.
“We did.” I said.
“Good. Now go to bed, quit acting like horny teens, it’s disgusting.” He teased before turning away and leaving Joel and me.
One look at Joel caused us both to start laughing. We both tried to cover our mouths to not make too much noise as we stumbled back upstairs and to our room. We both got ready and settled into the bed. It was nicer than the one Joel had back in the QZ. That paired with Joel's around me helped me fall asleep quickly.
The next morning, we had to leave. I was a little sad but I knew I would get to come back again and see them. Before we left Bill pulled me aside.
“Joel said you don’t have a gun.”
“I don’t. My dad had a couple and some of my brothers did but I’ve never had one. My dad lost one when we moved from Knoxville and I couldn’t find his other one before I had to leave my old place.” I explained.
“Hm… well come here.” He said, nodding for me to follow.
“You know how to use one right?” He asked.
“Yeah, Scott showed me a while back and Joel’s helped me more with it here and there.”
He nodded.
When we got to where he was leading I was amazed. He had a whole cellar full of them.
“I think I have something that belongs to you.” He said, catching my attention.
I turned around and there, sitting on the table was a gun that I hadn’t seen in years. The barrel was all black, a little worn by the years. The magazine grip was plated in wood and carved carefully into it were my and my brothers' initials and the year we were born. It was my Pa’s gun, the one he had lost.
“How’d you get this?” I asked, picking it up carefully as if it were made of porcelain.
“Someone showed up here with it, used it as a trade. It’s yours though. I got ammo and some holsters over there.” He pointed me to where they were.
I found the right ammo and took some then took a look at the holsters. At the bottom was a thigh one that was perfect. I got it on, loaded the magazine, and put the safety on before following Bill out.
When we got back to the house, Joel and Tess were waiting with our bags, ready to go. We all said our goodbyes and made our way to the fence line. As we made our way closer to the cover of trees I turned back and took one last good look at it all. I would be back, I reminded myself but I would have never guessed what would happen between now and then.

Oh Captain, My Captain: Chapter 7
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: With dinner wrapping up, you are excited to see where the rest of the night takes you and Joel.
Joel Miller x f!reader
Chapter warnings: fluffy smut
Joel extended his arm across the table with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream and gently slipped the savory bite into your mouth. Your eyes met for a half-a-second as you accepted the dessert you were sharing before using your thumb to wipe away a little left over on your lip.
"I'm glad we decided to get dessert." You smiled at him as he helped himself a spoonful.
"We couldn't leave without dessert." Joel winked, and the fire inside of you ignited a little more. He slipped you another bite. The way he let the spoon linger by your lips made the action feel more intimate.
When the waitress returned, asking if either of you wanted to order anything else, you couldn't say the word 'no' fast enough. Not because you wanted the dinner to end, but because you couldn't wait for the next part of the night.
Would you go out to another place? Back to Joel's house? Things seemed promising and you hoped it would stay that way.
When you tried to pay for part of the bill Joel physically had to remove your hands from it. "I know it's outdated but I'm paying." He gave a laugh.
"Come on-" you began to insist but he hurried to put his own debit card in the folder before passing it off to the waitress.
Stubbornly you grinned and threw a cash tip down on the table.
"I'm going to leave her a tip on the card," Joel said.
"Well then she'll get double." You eyed him and he laughed. "Well, it'll be a good night for her then."
"I guess it will."
The two of you stared one another down until you made a goofy face and raised your eyebrows, making Joel finally crack. He gave a chuckle and within a few minutes he was whisking you out of the restaurant and back to his truck.
It was bad. You had a one track mind. All you could think about was kissing Joel, touching Joel. Letting him touch you. You'd never had it this bad for a guy before and it was almost too intense to handle. Almost.
"Where to?" Joel looked over when you were both in the cab of the truck.
You took a calculated risk, taking a cue from the way the two of you had interacted from the start. "The view from your balcony is pretty nice." You silently hoped rejection wasn't about to follow.
"It is." Joel nodded, agreeing with you. He put the truck in drive. "I promise I won't kidnap you."
"As long as you feed me I'll be okay," you teased, making him chuckle.
Joel let the windows down and you drove mostly silently on the short ride back, aside from a few mellow tracks on the radio.
You texted your brother: Cover for me tonight. I'll owe you one.
He texted back: Owe me two.
You replied: Deal.
"You okay?" Joel asked, breaking the quiet that lingered.
You smiled and nodded. "Yeah."
Momentarily, you were pulling into the driveway beside the cottage that peeked through the trees and overlooked the beachy cul de sac where you had met Joel aboard The Mist of the Sea.
Your nerves returned. The confidence, the humor, the lust. It all took a back seat to the butterflies in your stomach - or at least all of it rode shotgun. The feeling escalated as you strolled toward the door to his house. Your arms and legs felt heavy as you scanned the darkened atmosphere. Although the little, brown cottage wasn't far from the hustle and bustle of the main roads of the vineyard, the immediate area was peaceful and quiet.
As you entered behind Joel he flicked on the outdoor light before switching on one above the kitchen sink to give some dim lighting inside. Again, the quiet allowed for way too much time to think.
You trailed Joel toward the door that lead out onto the balcony. The salty air hit you a moment later and you both looked out onto the water from where you stood side by side with your hands on the wooden railing.
Below you could see a few people wandering around by the docks. Joel motioned with his arm. "There's the silhouette of our boat."
You smiled and turned to him. "You love what you do, huh?"
Joel smiled back. "Yeah. I just wish I made more money."
You glanced around the area and over your shoulder toward the house's interior. "I'd say you're doing pretty well for yourself. And you're happy, so.." you shrugged.
Joel maintained a closed-mouth smile and you felt the butterflies intensify in your stomach when he rested his hand on the side of your face. It was like a gravitational pull that resulted in your lips meeting his again.
Your eyes closed and your only thought was how smooth of a kisser Joel was. His tongue expertly massaged yours and, like always, you found yourself gasping for quick breaths within your sensual makeout session.
Controlling your breathing became increasingly difficult as your arms wrapped around his upper body. Your back pressed firmly against the railing of the balcony and Joel began to kiss down your neck a little more aggressively.
You let out a deep breath in his ear and a second later his lips crashed back against yours.
"Let's go inside," you whispered against him.
Joel abruptly scooped you up off the ground and you felt the bottom of your dress raise high up your thighs as your legs secured around his waist.
Still face-to-face, you continued to kiss him as he blindly walked you both back inside the house and down the hall to his bedroom.
Every inch of your body was hot when Joel placed you down beneath him on the center of the bed. His pillow smelled like a combination of his shampoo and possibly the cologne you had become familiar with that he wore. It was intoxicating.
Joel pushed up at the bottom of your dress. It had been six months since you'd gotten any, and it certainly wasn't like *this*. Your body ached with anticipation and you arched your hips when Joel began to pull your panties down off your thighs and past your knees.
You could clearly see his erection pressing at the front of his pants as he continued to undress you before bearing himself to you.
A little smile snuck onto your face as you drank him in from head to toe. Joel smiled back before leaning back down to kiss your lips as he pushed your legs apart with his knee and settled between them.
"I, um.." you whispered against his lips. "I haven't been with anyone since the winter when I broke up with the guy I was seeing." You tried to keep it short and knew you should have probably mentioned something sooner than when the two of you were laying naked in bed together. "So, I'm not on.. anything."
You swallowed hard, glancing up at him from only inches away and his lips twisted in a faint smile. Without fully getting off of you, Joel reached for the top drawer of his night stand and whipped it open. His hand shuffled around blindly before he pulled out a condom.
"I just keep some.." he shrugged with a hint of insecurity, but it didn't matter to you. Joel didn't owe you an explanation. If anything it was responsible.
He pushed back onto his knees. You couldn't help but stare as he ripped open the square package and began to pull the latex down, inch by inch, over his erection.
Fuck, he's big. You never knew something like that could turn you on even more.
When Joel looked back to you, you pulled him to you more fiercely. "I want you," you choked out.

Ellie wakes to a strange rattling noise. It sounds almost liquidy, but metallic at the same time, but definitely fucking annoying.
With a quiet groan, she pokes her head out of the sleeping bag, finding the source of the noise. There’s some kind of container on the camping stove, like a taller version of the pot she’d watched you warm the ravioli up in last night, but more narrow, the handle attached at two ends instead of one.
The sun’s up, the ground beneath her isn’t as hard as she anticipated, and slowly, she rolls onto her knees, still encased in the sleeping bag as she shuffles forward to inspect the thing on the stove. The lid looks like plastic, and she can see the liquid inside, dark brown and sputtering as she flips the lid.
The smell hits her like a damn truck, and she groans loudly. “Ugh! What the fuck is that?”
She hears your instant laughter, turning to see both you and Joel standing at the back of the truck, packing things back up. You have the rifle slung across your back, and Joel lifts his brows at Ellie. “You don’t like coffee?”
She makes a face in response, rolling back over and flopping onto her back, and you appear a moment later, backlit by the cloudy sun, hands on your hips. “Up and at ‘em, kid. We need to get a move on.”
Once all the packing is done, you and Joel start to bicker about who’s driving first. Joel keeps insisting that he take the first shift, and you keep reminding him that you took the first watch, so you drive first. Ellie doesn’t miss the way his jaw goes tight when your voice drops and you say something he can’t make out, but then he shoves the thermos of coffee at you, stalking towards the trucks and climbing into the backseat. Your eyes follow him, but then shoot back to Ellie, who nearly flinches, reaching for her bag. “Let’s go.”
It takes Joel all of five minutes to pass out in the backseat, and you shake your head, glancing at him over your shoulder as you pull back onto the highway, the truck wobbling slightly as it goes from grass to asphalt.
“Stubborn as fuck, I tell you.”
Ellie settles deeper into her seat. You leave the radio off to let Joel sleep, and when you reach for the thermos, Ellie keeps her voice low. “Is that seriously what those Starbucks in the QZ used to sell?”
“Hah, they had better stuff than this. Bill had a stockpile, but none of it was as fresh as theirs.”
She wrinkles her nose. “It smells like burnt shit.”
You huff a little laugh. “Used to be able to get it with all kinds of stuff, caramel, cinnamon, hazelnut. Smelled like a damn dream.” You jut your chin towards the little door in front of Ellie’s legs. “Open that, yeah? Get the map out. I think I know where I’m going, but the last thing we need is to get lost.”
“Wouldn’t want that,” Ellie agrees, and reaches for the handle. The door drops open when she pulls on it, and fishes the maps out, unfolding it in her lap. “Have you ever been to Wyoming before?”
“Never,” you reply, sipping the coffee again. She watches as you close the cap one-handed, your other braced on top of the steering wheel. “We moved around a bit when I was a kid, but I guess it’s not far from where my sister was born, now that I think about it.”
“You have a sister?” Ellie asks instantly, her curiosity piqued. She’s still not quite sure what it is about you that has her so curious, her questions coming one after another. And she’s no fool, she knows Joel has about had it with the questions, but you indulge her, and it’s…it’s nice.
“Had,” you say quickly, and Ellie bites her tongue, instantly regretting it, wondering if you’re about to make another rule for her, like you had back in Lincoln. “She was in Austin, with our parents, but then Joel found her in Cincinnati. She, uh, she died. She got bit and FEDRA dragged her off.”
“Shit, I’m sorry.”
You lift a shoulder, moving both hands to the steering wheel. Your eyes are glued to the windshield in front of you.
But Ellie can’t help herself. She wants to know; she has to know. “What about your parents?”
“Remember how I told you they bombed Boston?” you say, and Ellie nods, remembering the story, the craters in the streets, how it looks like a fucked-up moon. “Austin was overrun, and FEDRA levelled the city. My parents were in a shelter when they dropped the bombs, and no one survived.”
The map flutters in Ellie’s grip as her finger curl, the paper crinkling. “I…”
“You don’t have to say you’re sorry, kid,” you say, but she can see the strange expression on your face, something she doesn’t have a name for. “It happened a long time ago.”
You both go quiet for a while, and the only sound is the rumble of the truck, Joel’s quiet breathing in the backseat, and the rustle of the map as Ellie tries to figure out where you are, where you’re going. You offer help where you can, splitting your focus between the road and the map. “Right about there,” you point, “that’s where we camped.”
“Okay, so it’s 76 West, and then 70 West for, like, ever.”
“Then Wyoming?”
Ellie nods in agreement. “And then Wyoming. Do we know where in Wyoming, exactly?”
You shake your head. “Joel knows. There’s a radio tower that we used to send messages through it; I can’t remember the city. Last we heard from Tommy, that’s where it came from.”
“Tommy is Joel’s brother?”
“He is,” Joel answers, startling you both. He leans forward from the backseat, reaching for the thermos of coffee. “The tower is in Cody.”
Ellie turns back to the map, ignoring the loud slurp as Joel drinks from the thermos. “Cody…Cody.” She spots it, along the fold in the map. “Ah, man, that is deep up in there.”
“Great,” you mumble, reaching for the thermos as Joel hands it to you.
“Yeah,” Joel grumbles in response, and Ellie sees the way his hand lingers on your shoulder, squeezing lightly.
“And if he’s not there?” she asks.
“Then odds are, he’ll be near a settlement,” Joel replies, “probably close to another city. Ain’t too many of ‘em in Wyoming, thankfully.”
Ellie’s eyes find another city name on the map. “Chee-Yen.”
“Cheyenne,” you correct, and she looks at you.
“Che—really?”
The corner of your mouth quirks and you nod. “Really.”
“Cheyenne,” Ellie repeats, searching for more cities. “Laramie. Casper?” Another question piques, and she turns to Joel. “Is Tommy older than you or younger than you?”
His brow furrows in that way of his and he reaches for the thermos again. “Younger.”
“Why isn’t he with you?”
“Long story.”
“You people and your long stories,” Ellie groans, tipping her head back. “Is it longer than twenty-five hours? Cuz I think that’s what we got.”
Joel sighs, and she sees his eyes flick up, no doubt meeting yours in the mirror. Your grin is gone, your lips now pressed into a tight line.
Another sigh, and then the man speaks. “Tommy’s what we used to call a ‘joiner,’” he starts, fiddling with the cap on the thermos. “Dreams of becomin’ a hero. So, he enlisted in the army right outta high school. Few months later, they ship him off to Desert Storm. It’s what they called that war, it doesn’t matter. Point is, bein’ in the army didn’t make him feel much like a hero. Cut to twelve years later, outbreak happens, and he convinces me to join a group makin’ their way out to Baltimore, which I did, mostly to keep an eye on him, keep him alive. That’s where we met Tess, and her husband. That whole crew. We, uh…”
He trails off, and Ellie sees his eyes flick up again. You adjust your hands on the steering wheel.
“Well,” he continues after a beat, staring down into the thermos, “for what it was, it worked. Until it didn’t. We got kicked outta Baltimore, Tommy convinces us to try Boston, and…”
Ellie looks at you. “And then you found each other again.”
You nod slowly, your lips still pressed together.
“We did,” Joel agrees. “And it worked, again, being in the QZ, keepin’ ourselves busy, keepin’ the smuggling under the radar. Then Tommy meets Marlene, and she talks him into joinin’ the Fireflies. Same mistake he made when he was eighteen.” He shakes his head. “Wants to save the world. Pipe dream. Him, Fireflies, all of ‘em, delusional.”
You inhale sharply.
“‘Course, last I heard,” Joel says, “he quit the Fireflies, too. So now he’s on his own out there, and…we gotta go get him.”
It goes silent in the truck again, save for your quiet swallow as Joel gives you the thermos again. But it’s only a moment before Ellie breaks it. “If you don’t think there’s hope for the world, why bother going on? I mean, you gotta try, right?”
Joel’s brow pinches again. “You haven’t seen the world, so you don’t know.” His eyes flick up again, but yours stay glued to the road ahead. “You keep goin’ for family. That’s about it.”
“I’m not family,” Ellie says, and ignores the way the words make her chest hurt.
“No,” Joel says instantly. “You’re cargo. We made a promise to Tess, and she was like family.”
She turns her head away from him, staring at the world rolling by outside. “What if you don’t find him?”
“We will,” you answer, a strange waver in your voice. “We’re persistent people, Ellie. Capable people. We’ll find Tommy, and we’ll get you to the Fireflies.”
She’s too distracted by the weird tone in your voice to notice the truck rolling to a stop. You push the stick on the middle console forward, and your eyes flick up to Joel’s.
“Outside. Now.” Before Ellie can say a word, you’re getting out of the truck, your eyes flashing to her before you shut the door. “Stay here. I just need a minute.”
Ellie just watches, the truck wobbling slightly as Joel shuffles out after you, slamming his door shut. You walk around to the front of the truck, your hands clenched into fists at your sides, and Joel follows.
+
“Cargo?” you shout, whirling on him when Joel reaches for your arm, your name halfway out of his mouth. “Are you fucking kidding me, Joel?”
“What are you—”
“She’s a person,” you nearly cry, grabbing the front of his jacket with both hands. “She’s just a kid, Joel. You can’t fucking…Cargo?”
“I’m sorry,” Joel grunts, wrapping a hand around your wrist. “It just came out, all right? I didn’t mean to—”
“I’m gonna say it once,” you say, smacking his hand away, pointing a finger in his chest. “Don’t ever call her that again. You hear me? She’s not fucking cargo.”
He just stares at you for a moment, lifting his hand again. When you don’t immediately smack it away again, he curls his fingers around your wrist, tugging on your hand. “Liv, I’m sorry.”
“I’m not the one you need to apologize to.”
He lifts a brow. “I don’t know the last time you snapped on me like this, so maybe you are.” He presses his fingers against your pulse. “Talk to me. Tell me what’s going on in your head.”
You try to turn away from him, but he sees your bottom lip wobble, and pulls you back. “Last night, I just…I let my mind wander.”
“And?”
“And this feels like some kind of karmic joke,” you say, shrugging your shoulder, your eyes going shiny. “We’ve been hiding what I am for what, almost fifteen years? We could have stopped this a long time ago, and yet somehow, here we are, doing favours for Marlene of all people, putting our asses on the line, taking this kid across the country on a wing and prayer, and for what? To make up for all the terrible shit we did? She could save the damn world, and I’d still feel guilty.”
“Liv, you don’t have to—”
“I know,” you say, cutting him off, lifting a hand in the air. “I know why we made the choices we did, Joel. And I don’t regret them — I don’t regret choosing you over everything else. I never will. Ever. But this kid? She’s not just cargo, okay? It’s more than that. And don’t try to tell me that it’s not.”
Joel swallows hard, the guilt gnawing at his gut, and he pulls you against his chest, his words muffled by your hair. “I made you a promise,” he says, your words from the forest echoing through his head. “No questions asked. And…it is more than that. I know that. I just…”
He pulls back, holding you at arm’s length, and his eyes catch on his watch, just visible past the cuff of his jacket. Your eyes follow his, and you cover it with your hand, brushing your fingers against the band. “Joel.”
“We need to keep goin’,” he says, effectively ending the conversation. He turns on his heel, swallowing down the barrage of emotion that’s crept up his throat. You don’t fight him as you follow, slipping your hand into his as you walk back to the truck. From the corner of his eye, he sees you wipe your cheeks, and you don’t say a word as he gets into the driver’s seat, you taking his place in the back.
Ellie glances between the two of you as he shifts the truck back into drive, the tires starting to roll as his foot comes off the break. “Ya got up pretty early,” he says to the kid. “If you wanna grab some more sleep.”
He can see the flash of protest in her face, but then she nods. In the backseat, you pull your jacket over you like a blanket, curling up on the seat. Joel pushes the gas pedal, the engine revving as he finds a comfortable speed. He puts the Linda Ronstadt cassette back in, keeps the volume low enough, and it’s not long before you’re both asleep. He finishes off the coffee, gripping the steering wheel one-handed as the grey sky starts to darken, but not into night.
He can almost smell it, the shift in the air, the feeling of rain before it comes. His joints ache, and he can hear your voice in his head: old man. He keeps his eyes on the road, humming along with the cassette, and when she croons out Bill and Frank’s song again, his eyes dart to your sleeping form in the backseat.
His eyes slide to Ellie next, passed out in the passenger’s seat, her head tipped back, mouth wide open. That thing crawls up his throat again, but he swallows it back, shakes his head, clears his throat.
Not now.
The thunder starts first, loud rumbles that echo inside the truck cab. You both sleep through the first few, but as the rain starts to fall, he hears you stirring, one hand reaching for his arm, calling his name softly.
“We might have to stop for a bit,” he tells you, covering your hand with his free one. “Dunno how bad it’s gonna get.”
Not thirty minutes later, and he’s pulling the truck to the side of the road, trying to tuck it amongst other abandoned vehicles. Ellie wakes a little later, clearly confused, and you put a hand on her shoulder as you explain why you’ve stopped. Joel does his best to ignore the twist that forms in his gut, seeing you be gentle with her.
Not here.
Thankfully all the food is in the cab of the truck, so you fish out some dry stuff, trail mix and some semi-stale crackers, a sports drink passed between the three of you. Ellie makes a face at the yellow colour, and Joel shakes his head. “They all taste the same.”
“They do not,” you laugh, taking the bottle from Ellie. “Is it weird to say the yellow ones were my favourite?”
“Yes,” Ellie says instantly, making a face as you take a big sip. “It literally looks like pee!”
“Lemon-flavoured,” you shoot back, waggling your eyebrows. The kid barks a laugh, and Joel chews the inside of his cheek to stop from smiling.
A few more puns are told, Joel shaking his head at you both, and you field a few more of Ellie’s questions. Only one of them has you glancing in his direction, unable to give her an answer. Are all the QZs like Boston?
“No,” he says bluntly, staring out the truck windshield, at the watery world beyond, smudged through the soaked glass, “no, they aren’t.”
It’s answer enough for the kid.
The rain refuses to let up, and it’s getting cold in the cab of the truck. You and Ellie switch places, some artful manoeuvring on your part that ends with you more in Joel’s lap than the passenger’s seat. You linger a moment, and he brushes his hand across your back before you’re folding yourself into the other seat. You’d thought to stick the sleeping bags in the cab as well, and Ellie unzips hers, tucking it around herself as she settles into the backseat. It’s not long at all until she’s passed out again, face buried in the sleeping bag.
You shed your boots, and Joel reaches for your sore ankle again, rubbing the same way he had in the forest. You hum happily, leaning half against the door, half against the seat. The blanket is settled over you both, stretched across the console, and Joel lets his hand snake a bit up your pant leg, fingers seeking your warm skin, massaging your muscles.
“You are damn good at that, Joel Miller,” you murmur, watching him from your spot, your head cocked to the side.
He lets the corner of his mouth lift. “I’m an expert when it comes to touching you, baby.”
Your grin matches his. “Ain’t that the truth.”
You both fall quiet, and the only noise is the patter of the rain on the roof of the truck, the softer noise of it against the windows, and Ellie’s quiet breathing. He doesn’t let up on your ankle, and for a long moment, you just stare at each other, your head still tilted to the side, Joel looking up at you under his eyelashes.
“I’m sorry, for snapping on you earlier,” you say, pushing your head against your fist. Your eyes are shiny again.
He squeezes his hand around your leg, pressing into the muscle of your calf. “You don’t have to apologize, Liv.”
“I do,” you say, your voice insistent, and you reach across the space between you, fingers curling in his sleeve, tugging his hands into yours. “It wasn’t fair of me, I just—”
“You were looking out for the kid,” he says, tangling your fingers together. “I know that.”
Both of your heads turn, looking at Ellie’s sleeping form in the back. Joel doesn’t let his gaze linger, focusing on your linked finger instead.
“What are we gonna do, Joel,” you ask, “when this is all over?” When he doesn’t answer right away, you elaborate. “After we get her to the Fireflies, I mean. After we find Tommy.”
He squeezes your knuckles with his own. “I haven’t really thought that far, if I’m bein’ honest.” His brow furrows as he looks at you, sees something unspoken on your face. “Why, what are you thinkin’, baby?”
You lift your shoulder slowly. “I thought maybe…maybe we go back to Lincoln. Bill’s bunker was still full, even after we took what we did. We could give them a proper funeral, clean the place up again, build the walls up. Have our own place.” Your eyes drop to your lap. “Our own home.”
“Is that what you imagined for us?” Joel asks you, reaching over and cupping your chin in his palm, lifting your eyes to his. You lean into his touch, bending forward to make it easier for him. “White picket fence, big house with a yard…”
The last part goes unspoken, but it’s loud as hell in his mind.
…kids?
Your face twists, a sad smile on your lips as you cover his hand with yours, keeping his hand against your cheek. “You know, I never actually let myself imagine it after I left Austin. Cuz when I finally let myself want that with you, I had to let you go, and once I let himself start to want you again, the world ended.”
Joel’s throat goes thick. You’ve never told him that before. “Want me…again?”
You nod into his palm. “Our birthday. You called me, and we talked, and you—”
“I asked you if Dean had proposed.”
Another nod. “And I told you if he asked, I would have said no. And you told me that you’d always be there for me. I thought about it the whole way home, and I just…” You turn your head, pressing a soft kiss to the centre of his palm. “I never stopped wanting you, Joel. Never stopped loving you. I can’t ever stop.”
A single tear slides down your cheek, and Joel reaches for you, centre console be damned. “C’mere,” he husks, hauling you into his lap, arranging your limbs until you’re comfortable, the blanket now draped over you both. His words are muffled by your hair. “Love you so goddamned much.”
You tilt your head back to press a kiss to the scruff of his jaw. “Love you more.”
+
The road is clear, until it’s not.
You’re not totally sure where you are. The maps have you a bit turned around, and it’s hard as hell to pinpoint a location on the map. You’re in the passenger’s seat again, Joel behind the wheel, Ellie in the back. You split your gaze between the maps and the outside, trying to find some kind of marker, some landmark that might help you figure out where you are. But too many signs are rusted away, the names snapped in half, the highway signs rotted and scattered in pieces on the highway.
Eventually, things start to look more…industrial. You’re at a loss; you haven’t been this far out of Boston since the outbreak, and even before, you never went Northwest. An overpass has you squinting at the maps, trying to find the number, but the vehicles have grown more concentrated, and Joel manoeuvres the truck around an abandoned ambulance, but then hits the breaks, seeing an eighteen-wheeler stretched sideways along the tunnel beneath the overpass, effectively blocking the way.
“Stay put,” you tell Ellie, tossing the maps onto the dashboard. Joel gestures to the rifle in the backseat and Ellie hands it to him, while you unholster your gun, sliding out of the passenger’s side.
You walk towards the blocked tunnel slowly, both of your gazes sweeping left and right, every rustle of leaves in the wind making your sense prickle. You feel…uneasy.
Glancing back at the truck, you can see Ellie through the windshield, leaning between the front seats, concern evident on her face. “Joel,” you call as he sinks to one knee, peering through the small space beneath the eighteen-wheeler’s trailer, “we’re not getting through this. None of these cars are movable.” You gesture around, the smashed cars and rusted-out vans only proving your point. “You even know where we are?”
“Kansas City,” he supplies.
You scratch your fingers across your forehead. “Missouri?”
“Sure as fuck ain’t Wyoming,” he grunts, and reaches out a hand. You haul him to his feet, holstering your gun as you start back to the truck. “I need to look at the map.”
Ellie glances between you as you get back into the truck, instantly handing Joel the map, trying to make sense of one of the smaller ones. “How far back are we gonna have to go to get around this?” you ask Joel, jutting your chin at the map in his hands. He traces his finger across the highway lines, but doesn’t say anything, just sighs. “Joel?”
“Screw it,” he says, and shifts the truck into reverse. Ellie falls back into her seat as Joel tosses you the maps.
“What are you doing?”
“We can jog right around this tunnel,” he says, three-point-turning the truck around, bracing his hand on the back of your seat as he does so, “take the next ramp,” he shifts it into drive, “and we’re back on the road, a minute tops.”
You reach for the map again, not totally convinced as he drives off the on-ramp, leading away from the tunnel.
Somehow, you end up in the city.
“We’re going the wrong way,” you say, shaking your head at him as the buildings start to become more and more concentrated. “Joel, this is taking us in the opposite direction of the highway.”
“Well, then where the fuck is the highway?” he shoots back at you, exasperated. His tone makes you bristle. “Tell me which way to go.”
“I don’t know where it is,” you say, smacking your hand against the map. “I’m all turned around, and I have no clue where the fuck we are right now.”
He glances over you, turning onto the next street. “Don’t look at the state map, Liv, look at the inset.”
“You look at the fucking inset!” You heave a sigh, shoving your hand through your hair. “Sorry, I’ve never been to Kansas fucking City before. We’re going…north. I think.”
“And the highway is—”
“West,” Ellie supplies from the backseat, and when you shoot her a look over your shoulder, she shrugs her shoulders, holds her hands out apologetically.
“Okay, so it’s gotta be the right,” Joel grunts, but then shakes his head, murmuring what the fuck?
“We’re going in a circle,” you sigh, dropping the map in your lap. “We’re just—”
“Stop!” Ellie says suddenly, leaning between the seats. Joel slams on the brakes, the tires screeching as the truck come to a halt. She points out Joel’s window. “Is that the QZ?”
Your heart slams against your ribs as you see the QZ wall. It looks…abandoned, for lack of a much better word. The gate in the wall is wide open, and your hand shoots out, landing on Joel’s leg, curling your fingers in the fabric of his jeans. “Where the fuck is FEDRA?”
“Hey!” someone shouts, and you nearly jump out of your skin. Joel goes rigid. “Please help!”
The man stumbles forward on the street ahead of you, clutching his side, half-draped in a blanket. “Seatbelts,” Joel grits out, and you do as he says, turning to make sure Ellie gets hers on.
She stares at you wide-eyed as Joel grips the wheel, steps on the gas. “Aren’t we gonna help him?”
“No,” you reply, pressing yourself against the seat as the truck accelerates down the road. “No, we’re not.”
The man shouts, diving for cover, and you spot someone on the fire escape of the building on the right side of the road. “Joel!” you shout, the rev of the engine nearly drowning you out, but a moment later, the windshield crunches, a cinderblock splintering the glass. The impact throws the truck of course for a second, but Joel straightens it out, just in time for the tires to roll over a spike strip in the road. You can hear the air hissing from the tires, the truck rocking from left to right across the road. Ellie squeaks from the backseat, and you throw your arm back, your chest going tight when her hand wraps in yours.
Another man blocks the road, lifting a gun and pointing it right at the truck. Joel shouts a curse, cranking the wheel all the way to the right, and the truck nearly slides across the pavement, speeding right through the glass front of a laundromat. The hood crunches inward as it slams into the row of washing machines, and you’re jolted in your seat, your arm bent at an awkward angle, hand still wrapped around Ellie’s.
“You okay?” Joel asks, palm coming down on your leg. “You’re not hurt?”
You shake your head. “No, I’m fine,” you reply, gritting your teeth against the slight pain in your shoulder. “Nothing major. Ellie?”
“I don’t think so,” she answers, a waver in her voice.
Gunshots ring out, and you all duck on instinct. It keeps coming, shattering the glass doors of the machines, and Joel pushes at your shoulder, ripping your hand from Ellie’s. “Belts off, out of the truck!” he shouts, more gunshots cutting him off. You do as he says, reaching for the handle of the door. They keep shooting and you reach for the back door the moment you’re out, nearly yanking Ellie out of the truck. Joel goes for the rifle, and when you shut the door again, you put Ellie between you two, leaning against the truck as Joel loads the gun. She has your bat clutched in her hands.
There are more of them, more gunshots ringing through the laundromat, pinging off the body of the truck, flying over your heads to the back wall. Joel meets your eyes over Ellie’s head, and you draw your gun in one hand, and reach for the bat with the other. Ellie gives it willingly. You look around for something — anything — that might help, and finally, you spot a hole in the wall to your right, a kid-sized hole in the drywall leading to the other side.
“Ellie,” you say quietly, putting your hand on her arm. It makes her flinch. “You see that hole over there?” She follows your eyes, her chin lowering once. “You’re gonna squeeze through it, okay?” Gunfire cuts you off, and she grabs your hand, squeezing it between both of hers, her palms clammy.
“Last chance!” the fuckers outside yell. It makes your gut twist.
You shake your head, your attention turning to the kid, who now has a faraway expression on her face. “Ellie. When I say go, you crawl to the wall, you squeeze through, and you don’t come out until one of us gets you, okay?”
A bullet shatters the passenger’s side window, glass raining down on you. Out of reflex, you throw yourself over Ellie, protecting her. Her head whips around as more bullets ping off the truck. “They’re not gonna hit you,” Joel tells her. Her eyes are everywhere, and you try to brush glass away as Joel grabs the front of her coat. “Look at me!”
She listens. A bullet skims off the concrete floor beside your hand and it makes you flinch, an unseen mark, the burn of metal making you snatch your hand up off the floor.
“They’re not gonna hit you,” Joel says, his eyes locked with Ellie’s. “You stay down, you stay low, you stay quiet. Okay?”
“Okay,” she says meekly, with a nod.
“Go!” Joel shouts, and you both swing upwards, aiming your weapons. From the corner of your eye, you can see Ellie slide across the floor. You just keep shooting, training your gun on anything that moves until you know she’s against the wall. You empty your clip, dropping to your knee to reload, and she’s through the hole, behind the wall.
She’s safe.
You and Joel pull the trigger at the same time, your bullets finding new homes, dropping two of your attackers. “Motherfuckers!” someone yells, and you drop back down behind the truck. Your chest is heaving, your eyes darting to the hole in the wall. Joel whispers your name, juts his chin toward an old vending machine at the back of the laundromat. He moves first, and you follow, feeling his hand on your back, pushing you to safety.
The crunch of glass gives the guy away, and you straighten, pushing Joel’s shoulder down and pulling the trigger at the same time. It only takes one shot to drop him. You’re trying to catch your breath, forcing your eyes away from the blood now pooling around the guy’s head. Joel pulls the lever on the rifle, but it’s jammed. He curses, yanking on it hard, just as back doors you hadn’t noticed burst open, a new opponent barreling through.
Without thinking, you throw yourself in the line of fire, angling yourself in front of Joel. There’s a barrel of a shotgun in your face, and your instincts kick into gear. You swing the bat up, knocking the barrel away as the man pulls the trigger, the shot hitting the ceiling instead of you. But it’s not enough to loosen his grip.
The butt of the shotgun cracks across your face a second later, your vision instantly tinging black, and you go toppling, your head hitting the ground hard. Joel screams your name, but the sound is distant. The bat skitters out of your grip, but you have the wherewithal to keep your fingers tight around your gun. Joel, where is J—
You black out for a moment, the world slipping away completely, but a loud bang yanks you back, pained grunting following. “Now you’re gonna fuckin’ pay!” Your head lolls to the side, and you can’t quite make out what’s happening. Your head screams at you to move, and you see Joel’s boots scraping against the floor. Someone’s on him, someone’s—
Another shot rings out. It makes your ears ring. Someone shouts, and Joel starts coughing. He’s gasping, wheezing, crawling on his hands and knees toward you. He grabs your face in his hands, and something on your cheek feels hot, too hot. “Liv,” he calls, his voice hoarse. “Baby, are you okay?”
Slowly, he helps you up. Your head is spinning, but over his shoulder, you see Ellie step forward, her gun trained on your attacker, now sprawled on the floor. Joel’s eyes follow yours, and they widen when he sees her weapon of choice. The realization makes your heart twist; she shot the guy attacking you.
Joel pulls his hand from your face, and you see it’s covered in blood. The man groans, and when he spots Ellie and her gun, he lifts his hands in surrender. “No, no, no, no, it’s okay! It’s over! We’re not fighting anymore.” He wheezes, clearly in pain, and Joel gets to his feet, reaching down for you, his eyes trained on the guy.
He looks young. Too young.
“I’m gonna go home,” he says, “and I’ll tell everyone you’re good.” He starts crying, his voice going high-pitched. “I don’t know what to do! My legs don’t work!”
Even through your haze, you can put two and two together. She must have hit him in the spine.
“My mom isn’t far,” he continues, near sobbing. “If you could get me to her.” His eyes cut to you and Joel, now on your feet. You stumble slightly, but Joel has a tight grip on you. “We could trade with you guys. We could be friends. I didn’t know. I’m Bryan. I’m Bryan.”
Still with a tight grip on you, Joel turns to Ellie. She lowers the gun, and he holds his hand out. You open your mouth to say something, but she sniffs, shaking her head, and hands it to him. One-handed, Joel tucks it into the waist of his jeans.
“Take her,” he says to Ellie, and it takes a second for you to realize he’s referring to you. His grip on you disappears, and for a moment, you think you might topple over, but Ellie fits herself beneath your arm, one arm tight around your waist, tugging your arm around her shoulders.
Joel pulls out his knife. “Wait, wait, wait!” Bryan shouts, and pulls a knife from his belt, letting it clatter to the floor. “You can have it! It’s a good knife.”
“Turn around,” Joel says, nailing Ellie with dark eyes that send a chill down your spine. His tone clears away some of the haze in your head. “Now.”
“No, no, no, no!” Bryan shouts again. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
“Liv,” Joel calls, his tone still shiver-inducing. Blinking hard, you turn Ellie towards the wall, angling yourself in front of her. She’s still holding you upright, and buries her face in your chest. You can feel the tears on her cheeks, and you lift your hand, letting it rest on the back of her head.
“Please, please, please,” Bryan whimpers.
“Cover your ears,” you whisper to Ellie, propping your chin on the top of her head. Blood drips down your face, sticky and hot, and you ignore it as best you can, though it’s hard to ignore the throb in your cheek.
“I’m sorry, please! You don’t have to! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Please!”
Ellie’s breathing gets heavy, the front of your shirt almost damp with it.
You hear Joel take the man’s life. You wait until the gasping stops, and then you tap Ellie’s shoulder. “It’s over.” For a moment, she doesn’t move, squeezing both arms around you. You sway slightly, and Joel’s hand touches between your shoulders. It makes you flinch, and Ellie jumps back, pressing herself to the wall.
He’s got your chin in his hand a second later, turning your head slightly, giving you a once-over. “You okay? Nothing broken?”
“Hurts,” you admit, and he wipes away a bit of the blood with his sleeve. “I’ll live.”
Ellie’s eyes dart past Joel, towards where Bryan lies, and he steps to the side, blocking her view, taking you with him. Joel gestures to the hole. “Need you to find a door or something, we’re not gonna fit through that.”
She nods, her lip quivering, and immediately climbs back through the hole, disappearing from view. Joel grabs your chin again, and you notice how heavy his breathing is, how shaky his hands are. It’s quiet, for a moment, no more gunfire or shouting. “Scared me.”
“Makes two of us,” you agree, sighing as he leans in, pressing a kiss to the uninjured side of your face, right at your jaw. “We need to get out of here.”
He glances over your shoulder at the wrench of the truck and the front of the laundromat. “Truck’s toast, we’ll figure it out. We need to find somewhere safe, for the night at least. High up, find a way out of the city. And get you cleaned up.” He bends slightly, peering through the hole in the wall. “Ellie!”
“There’s some stuff against the door,” she calls back, and you can hear her sigh.
Joel’s jaw goes tight. “Well, can you move it?”
It’s slow-going. Your head throbs with every step, twin shocks of pain in your skull and along your cheek. Joel’s grip is tight around your waist, his head whipping in every direction as he keeps you close to the building, and then he leans you against the front of brick as Ellie pulls whatever’s blocking the door out of the way, Joel pushing hard against it to help. The moment the door swings inward, he rushes you in, shuts the door, and then motions for Ellie to help push the table back into place. “Let’s go,” he says to her. “Fast.”
“Right.”
The door clangs as the table is pushed back into it. The noise makes your ears ring, and you sag against the table, exhaling heavily. Ellie sniffs loudly, and both you and Joel look at her. “I’m okay,” she says quickly, dropping down to grab her backpack. “I’m good.” She sets the bag on the table, unzips it. “I, uh, got some food in here still, and I got your light,” she says, and pulls out Joel’s flashlight, handing it to him. She looks between the two of you, wincing when she sees the blood on your face. “Fuck, Liv, are you—”
“I’ll be fine, kid,” you tell her, ignoring the way the words make your head throb. Your breath hitches, and you glance across at the hole in the wall. “Shit, Joel, the bat.”
His face goes hard, and you know what he’s gonna say. You can’t go back over there. There are bodies, evidence of the violence, and whoever sent the men will come looking. Standing here as long as you have is risk enough. “Liv, we—”
“I’ll go,” Ellie says, already walking toward the wall. “I can grab it and just—”
The distant screech of tires makes you freeze and you flash your hand out, grabbing the back of her coat and hauling her backward. “Leave it,” you grit out, lifting yourself up off the table. “We need to go now.”
“Where?” Ellie asks, and Joel heads to the door in the back of the room, clicking his flashlight on as he pushes it open slowly. Ellie fits herself under your arm again, your forearm resting on her backpack. “What are we gonna do now?”
“We go up,” you tell her, echoing what Joel had said earlier. “See if we can spot a path outta here.”
Joel glances over his shoulder at you, eyeing your arm around the kid’s shoulders. “Stay close.”
She nods. “Got it.”
You follow Joel down a hallway that leads out into an alley beside the building. There are cars scattered, and as the rumble of a truck gets closer, you duck down, wincing as you go, hiding behind an SUV as a pickup rolls past the mouth of the alleyway, followed by a larger armoured truck.
They start shouting Bryan’s name.
Joel signals for you to stay put, and darts across the alley, to the side door of the building across the way. You hold your breath as he pulls it open, peering inside before turning back to you and Ellie, giving a quick nod. You rise slowly, but then push yourself, moving as fast as you can across the pavement to Joel’s side. He leads you inside, and Ellie pulls the door shut behind you.
It’s dark inside, and for a moment, you pause. Joel puts his gun away, and you follow suit. You sag against the wall slightly, and he’s got his hand under your chin. “Look at me,” he commands, and you listen, blinking hard as you stare back at him. “Think it’s a concussion?”
“No,” you tell him, lifting your head out of his palm. “I’m fine, Joel.” It comes out snappier than you intend, and your body gives you away, wobbling slightly with the turn of your head. “Fuck. I just need to sit down a minute, or something.”
As quietly as possible, you make your way through the building. It seems to be some kind of abandoned retail space, a bunch of different stores and shops connected by one main hallway. Right at the end of the block is an old coffee house, and Joel decides it’s a good place to spot, seeing the newspaper-covered windows and dark-painted walls.
“Are we okay in here?” Ellie asks as you walk in, Joel heading for the front of the shop. You watch as he peels back a small corner of the newspaper, just enough to peer through, and you sink into a chair nearby.
“For now,” you tell her, and wipe some more of the blood from your face. The bleeding’s stopped, as far as you can tell, and something in your chest pangs as Ellie reaches into her bag and pulls out what looks like an old t-shirt.
“Here,” she says, handing it to you. “It’s mostly clean.”
The corner of your mouth twitches. “Thanks, kid.”
Silence settles over the three of you as Joel peers out the window. “That wasn’t FEDRA that attacked us,” you say as he sinks back a little.
“Wasn’t Fireflies either,” Ellie says, and you nod. “Then who are they?”
“People,” Joel sighs. “Looks like they’re checkin’ out apartment buildings first.” He shakes his head. “But they’ll be comin’ through these places soon enough.” He rises to his feet, turning and walking towards you. Ellie takes his place, looking through the crack in the newspaper. He taps your shoulder as soon as he’s close enough, and takes the t-shirt from you. You can almost hear the ache in his knees as he crouches down and starts wiping the blood from your face. His face is a hard mask, and you can stop yourself from cupping his cheek, swiping your thumb across his cheekbone. “When he burst through the door back there,” he mutters, shaking his head ever so slightly, “and then I saw you drop. I heard the shot, but I didn’t see where he—”
“Joel,” you murmur, brushing your fingers through his hair. “We’re fine. I’m fine.”
“Cracked you damn good,” he replies, dabbing lightly. You try not to wince. “Lucky it didn’t break your cheekbone.”
Before you can respond, Ellie pipes up. “There’s a really tall building, like, four blocks away.”
“Yeah,” Joel grunts, and hands you the now-stained t-shirt. You hold it against your cheek, watching as he sinks into the chair across from yours. “Saw it.”
“That’s where we’re going?” she asks, glancing at you over her shoulder. “Up?”
Joel nods. “As soon as we don’t hear a truck, we move. Fast as we can.”
He props his elbow on the table, puts his face in his hand, and you reach over, curling your fingers around his forearm. He’s shaking.
You murmur his name as Ellie slides down to sit against the wall, drawing her knees up to his chest. He doesn’t answer you, but drops his hand, catching yours in the process. “Are you okay?” Ellie asks, and when your eyes flick to her, you see she’s addressing Joel.
“I’m all right,” he grumbles, but his fingers twitch against yours, his brow furrowing. Damn that hard mask of his. “Are you…all right?” he asks in return, and you press your fingers against his wrist. His heartbeat races beneath his skin.
“Yeah,” Ellie says quietly, but she doesn’t elaborate.
“Joel,” you murmur again, and he shakes his head, staring down at his boots. You don’t have to see his face to know the guilt, the realization. If Ellie hadn’t done what she had, you’d probably all be laying dead in that laundromat.
“Thing is,” Joel says after a moment, his voice gruff, “is I didn’t hear that guy comin’. And…you…you shouldn’t have had to…you know?”
God, he’s bad at this. You know what he’s trying to say to her, but you can’t try and take over. He needs to say this himself.
“Well, you’re glad I did, right?” Ellie asks, and her eyes dart to you for a second.
“You’re just a kid,” he says, and suddenly your chest feels tight. “You shouldn’t know what it means to…” He trails off, but then lifts a hand. “It’s not like you killed him, but, shootin’ or…I know what it’s like, first time you, uh, hurt someone like that.”
Her eyes slide fully to you for a moment, and you just nod in return, the message silent. I do too.
“If you, uh, w—uh,” Joel tries to continue, but shakes his head, looking at you, a near cry for help in his eyes. “I’m not good at this.”
“Yeah, you really aren’t,” Ellie quips, and you squeeze his hand.
“I mean, it was my fault,” he says, shaking his head some more. “You shouldn’t have had to. And I’m sorry.”
You haven’t had a chance, really, to take in what happened. What Ellie did. Listening to Joel now, feeling his pulse race beneath your fingers, and seeing tears on the kid’s face as he tells her he’s sorry…It breaks your heart.
“I should have heard it,” you say, and Joel’s eyes flick to you. You lift your chin, ignoring the way your gut twists as Ellie wipes her cheeks. “I should have shot first, and I didn’t. I’m sorry, too, Ellie. I am. We’re here to protect you, and we…Joel’s right. You shouldn’t have had to do it.”
She nails you to your spot with those big dark eyes, wet with tears. That thing you’ve been feeling since this kid barrelled her way into your lives screams at you to grab her, to hug her close and tell her everything is gonna be okay, but you feel frozen, stuck in place, unable to move.
“It wasn’t my first time,” Ellie tells you both, and your brows raise. You can see the shock on Joel’s face, too.
Your fingers tap against Joel’s wrist. “Give her the gun.”
His head snaps back to you, one brow lifting slightly.
“It’s hers,” you prompt, lifting your chin slightly. “Give it back.”
Slowly, he moves over, closing the small space between the two of you and her, leaning down on one knee as he pulls the gun out of the back of his jeans. Ellie’s face perks up as he hands the small pistol back to her after pulling out the clip. “Show me your grip.”
She stares up at him as she does as asked, obeying when Joel tells her to take her finger off the trigger.
“Now, who taught you that?”
“FEDRA school,” she answers.
“Figures,” he grunts, and you push your chin into your palm as he reaches for her hands, adjusting her grip, showing her the proper way. The thing in your chest relaxes slightly, watching him with her. “Thumb over your thumb. Left hand squeezes down on the right. You got it?” She nods, doing what he tells her. You hear his voice soften ever so slightly. “There ya go.”
Ellie looks at you over Joel’s shoulder, almost like she’s looking for your approval. You try to blink away the wetness that’s formed in your eyes, and nod at her, giving her a little grin.
“Now, look it,” Joel says, and grabs the top of the gun, trying to pull it away. But she’s got the grip right and the gun doesn’t budge. Joel pulls again, nearly yanking her off the wall, and Ellie laughs. Then she relaxes, the laughter trailing off, but the smile on her face stays in place. “Okay?”
She nods. Joel gestures for the gun back, slides the clip back into place, and Ellie watches his movements. He hands it back to her, handle first, and the triumphant look on her face almost makes you laugh. She goes to put it in her pocket, but Joel stops her.
“Nuh-uh, you put it in your pack. You’ll shoot your damn ass off.” He gets back to his feet with a loud groan, and walks back to you. “How’s your head?”
“It’s okay,” you tell him, and take his offered hand, letting him help you up. You stuff the bloody t-shirt in the pocket of your coat. “I’ll feel better when we find somewhere safe for the night.” As of on cue, your face throbs so hard your eyes flutter shut. Joel squeezes your hip. “I’d murder for an ice pack right now.”
It’s a few more minutes, a few more pauses to determine where the truck that rumbles past goes, before Joel walks to the shop’s front door, starting to pull at the wood that’s been nailed over it. You try to help, but he waves you off. Once the door is free, Ellie comes up beside you, her hand slipping into yours. Joel sees it, and his eyes move from your hands to your faces, one at a time.
“We’ll get through this,” he says to Ellie, and you tighten your grip on her hand.
She gives a little nod. “I know.”
Without another word, Joel yanks the door open, and you step out into the daylight.

Have you ever stood in an empty hallway and been put into 2005-2009?
Rukawa Kaede x reader, sfw, fluff, word count 3,490
guys I've done it again I have wrote something vague and tender
Tumblr media
Stadium Operations Manger had not been the job you thought you would find yourself in. At least according to the results of the career aptitude test you took in high school.
Scheduling and preparing the stadium for events was your main job. Working with musicians teams to figure out how their touring stage would fit in your space. What nights were for basketball or hockey or monster jam trucks.
What charity wanted to sing at that hockey game? And there's a new food vendor right? These were questions you handed off to other people, the managers beneath you. With a walkie talkie, clipboard, and google calendar you hoped yourself invincible.
That was of course until Rukawa. His name squeezes its way out of the corner of your mouth, it tingles the tip of your nose and turns the ends of your ears hot. Your staff in aprons, yellow crowd control vests, and black security jackets moves out of your way as you pass.
There is twenty minutes until the doors open and then another hour until the game.
Your shoes clunk on the tiled floor, your legs burning from the fast pace. Where could he be this time? You were almost back at where you had started and there was no sign of him.
Pressing on the walkie you ask if anyone has seen him. They don't have to ask who. But he is still amiss and you don't know if you should be angry or impressed.
Deciding that he can wait just a couple minutes you walk over to the glass wall that overlooks the city. In the summer doors lead to a rooftop cafe, a balcony, but now in the colder months the doors are locked and you can only look.
At night the lights and reflections of the city are like rain. You often find yourself taking in this exact view, either on the first floor or higher up on the third floor where you are now.
Next to you is one of the smaller merchandise shops. The front of the shop also glass. All the local sports teams merch is stocked here and tonight the basketball teams logo is most prominent amongst the jerseys. Especially Rukawa’s jersey. That number of his, 11, seemingly mocking you. Where was he?
The shop door was propped open, you'd have to check the schedule and remind whoever closed last night to make sure to shut it. A sneaker. There behind the cashier counter on your right is a sneaker on the floor.
You leave the door to investigate. There is Rukawa on that blue shop carpet. His arms crossed over his chest and his breathing even. You kick the bottom of his shoe.
"Come on," he groans, "Get up, game time is soon,"
"You're lying,"
"I'm not lying you got to get your ass up and back downstairs,"
He doesn't say anything. You huff, knowing that the next part of this charade is trying to yank him off the floor. Rukawa is tall and mostly muscle, you tug on his arm but never get him very far. Today he is limp dead weight. You set your clipboard down to use both hands, in a misstep you tangle your shoes with his. Your hands loose grip on his forearm and you're tumbling backwards.
This is what seems to wake Rukawa up. His own hand grips onto your wrist pulling you in his direction just as he’s standing onto his feet. You bump into his chest and are momentarily in a whirlwind. Rukawa smells nice, his cologne faint but there, beneath the vague spicy citrus is the gentle sweat of sleep. His jersey isn’t pressed to flat clean lines but it is clean, it smells fresh. He’s looking at you not saying anything and you can feel his gaze but do not meet it.
“Your boss is going to kill me,”
“He’s not my boss,”
“He's your coach and that’s close enough, come on we have to get you down there,”
Rukawa follows you out of the store and into the massive stadium halls. He keeps pace with you, employees eye him but don’t ask for pictures or autographs. Around the bend is the employee only elevator and your shoulder brushes against him on the ride down to the basement floors.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,”
You say with a nonchalant tone, your eyes feasting upon your clipboard trying to find when the medic team is supposed to arrive tonight.
“I didn't mean for you to trip,”
This time he can't look at you while you look at him. You don’t know what to say, your mind trying to find some other instance where you’ve heard him apologize but can't. It's the thing that twitter accounts, sports journalists and other players say about Rukawa. That his head is too high, that he can't admit when he's over stepped but instead will say what he plans on doing next. The elevator dings open and you tell him that it's alright.

Your office is tucked away in the basement. It's barely big enough for the desk, couch and shelf of binders that hold it together. Rukawa is there on the couch, his back to you as you type away on your computer. Players were required to arrive at the stadium at least forty five minutes before the games. Most came earlier than that. Rukawa's teammates were lounging in the locker room with take out, in the seats below the announcers box playing Xbox on the jumbotron and listening to music on the court.
Rukawa was napping. You wondered if he had some sort of sleep disorder. Since finding him in the shop several weeks ago Rukawa had stopped napping in various places around the stadium and taken up your offer to sleep in the office. You turn to look at him now and find that he is already looking at you.
“You're awake,”
And he nods, sitting up.
“You ready for the game,”
He scoots the couch closer to the desk.
“I’ll take that as a yes,”
“We’re weak on defensive because Miller is out. Their good scorers, and so are we but our weak point is shining,”
“You can still win,”
Rukawa is close to the desk so that he can rest his head in his arms. His breath itches your skin as your attention battles to focus on the computer screen in front of you and not him.
“And you have to move the couch back when you leave for warm ups,”
༓・*˚⁺‧͙·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾
The team was on a losing streak. You did not bring it up to Rukawa. He sulked in your office before games, twisting in his sleep. He had been spending even more time in the gym. The training center was only two blocks away from the stadium. He parked his car in the same lot as yours, you saw him in there sometimes before you had to clock in, the training center not open yet. Most often he was napping, but sometimes you caught him watching game highlights. You always made sure to bump your fist on his window as you passed by.
Today, in the cold night air, he was there again. The trunk of his car slamming shut as he tossed his duffle bag inside. His eyes widened when he saw you, having caught him off guard. Another thing that you had not been able to do before. You see the bags under his eyes, the red creeping around his pupils.
“Rukawa, what are you still doing here, its really late,”
He shrugs, “I could ask you the same thing,” you were carrying a box full of posters. The new ones for the holders had come in, you liked to keep the cool ones of bands you liked. Rukawa held the box for you as you unlocked the car. Your breath came out in white clouds, the air slithering around you, Rukawa put his hands in his pockets.
“Hungry?”
He asks. The restaurant of Rukawa's choosing was at first surprising. Empanadas served over a counter. Traditional ones, and ones with more flashy fillings like Vegan Caprse and Spicy Bbq Chicken. The place is small with few tables, it's on the mall strip downtown and has doors on either side. People filter in and out easily, their empanadas wrapped in wax paper, steaming hot as people head back outside. Most seem drunk, rosy, and loud as they wait for their food.
You order first and snag the window seats, gliding onto the high stools. It's Friday so even though it's late the street is still buzzing. When Rukawa slides into the seat next to you, he hands you a cellophane wrapped pastry.
“For letting me use the office,”
“Oh you didn't have to do that,”
“I did. I have to do something for you,”
He's so matter of fact about it that it makes you want to roll your eyes. He's serious and dead set on small things like this, it makes you grin. You watch the people on the street, your reflection mixing with the lights, the people behind you in the small restaurant just blurry shapes in the window. The food is good and warm, the bread flaky and filling.
“Are you okay?” He doesn't answer but instead just looks at you. If he was going to be stubborn about it you supposed you could be a little mean, “I know you don’t like losing and…” You trail off hiding a smile behind your empanada. He twists around in his stool, propping his elbows up on the counter. You don’t stop looking at him and eventually he sighs and swivels the stool to face you.
“Fine. I don’t like it. And I can't do anything about it,”
“And have you done other things?”
“Like what?”
“What you've never taken, like a spa day or something?”
“I’m not going to a spa,”
“I’m not saying go to a spa I just mean when you aren’t playing basketball what do you do?”
༓・*˚⁺‧͙·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾
“When I first moved here this is where I would come,”
It's the next day and you had spent more time than you'd like to admit thinking about what to wear. Only to find that Rukawa was bringing you to a bridge looking down at the freeway. It was the massive freeway too, the one with ten lanes and the toll. The bridge had nothing but chainlink, that enclosed the concrete path, and a single iron railing keeping people from throwing rocks and themselves down at the cars. It connected a neighborhood of houses to a strip mall.
“And why would you come here? There's like nothing here,”
He shrugged, “This path connects to the river, the one down by the stadium. I used to run it every morning and sometimes I’d stop here at the bridge.”
There's stairs you have to descend, they seem clunky and odd next to the freeway. Drivers slow down as they approach and merge from the ramp onto the lanes. The city is still in view and you find your eyes wandering to the skyscrapers and glistening windows. Rukawa nudges your shoulder with your own.
“This is the part I like,”
A car gets on the exit ramp.
“What about it?”
“Look at the drivers,”
The next car comes, a blue honda, and the girl driving looks over her shoulder to see if she can merge. Almost everyone does this, the peek over the shoulder. Of course everyone does this, but it is charming to see that Rukawa has picked a spot just to watch people do this mundane task. You try to think of other things like this that everyone must do but your mind comes up blank, too busy watching the cars pass by.
There are easy things to think of, like breathing, drinking water, sleeping, that all people somehow complete. But smaller things, like having to check over your shoulder, escape you. But you know still that other people exist in the same way you do.
“I get why you come here,”
༓・*˚⁺‧͙·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾
“That just isn't going to work sir,”
The grody man in front of you was trying to convince you that his musicians stage set needed another rig for lights.
“There has to be some way you can do this for us, we’ll downsize if we have too,”
“You're going to downsize over some lights?”
All the pleasantries between you two had been used up. The past ten minutes had been very tense, the forty five minute meeting was entering two hour meeting territory and you were jittering with nerves. Not because you couldn't handle this man but because there was a game tonight and you still hadn't made your first round of check-ins with your team.
“Hell yeah we’ll downsize over this. This is money that you’ll be losing,”
“It's not possible, we simply don't have the room for it,”
“Then make room!”
The door to your office swings open, Rukawa is there, duffle bag slung over his shoulder and frozen as he takes in the atmosphere.
“Oh, I didn't know you had a meeting today,”
He’s about to turn away but you usher him in.
“No, no, its alright we were just finishing up,”
“No we aren't!”
Rukawa’s eyes dart between you and this man, he tosses his duffle bag onto the couch, stepping aside to let the man pass. But the man is still in the chair across from your desk, his face red and his palms up like can catch him an explanation for this interruption.
“I’m sorry but we are done. I've explained several times that we don't have room for another rig, and even if we did I couldn't let you use that space because the amount of lights you're suggesting is a fire hazard,”
“Other places have given us the space so why can't you?”
“Because we don't have it!”
You are practically yelling and the man's mouth is open in shock, his hand on his chest like he has the right to be appalled.
“You have to leave,”
Rukawa says. You don't take your eyes off the man in front of you.
“You don't have any say in this matter!”
“They told you to leave, leave,”
Finally, after a long, long beat of silence the man gets up and leaves. He slams your office door hard. Your fists balled up at your sides, you jump at the door. Opening it only to slam it shut even harder than he had. You stand in the middle of your office unsure of what to do now. Your whole body burning hot, your eyes brimming with tears, and your hands still clenched tight.
“Come on, you have to get out of this office,”
You run your fingers over the lines in your forehead, the ones that appear before you're going to cry.
“No, no, I have to check in with security and-”
“Do you think it's a good idea to do that when you're not calm and ready?” “But I have to,”
“Just ten minutes,”
You follow Rukawa to the elevator and find yourself retracing steps to the merchandise store you had last found him in. To your surprise Rukawa walks past that and to the doors that lead to the patio, and he opens them. He somehow has a key and though it's chilly out you still stand on the rooftop. It's afternoon, the sky a strong blue, clouds fluffy.
“Thanks,”
You say as Rukawa tosses you his warm up jacket.

“Can’t you go talk to him,”
“Isn't that your job,”
Rukawa's coach, a balding middle aged man who wears too many rings, sighs, and shakes his head.
“Your better at it, he likes you better,”
“Which is it, am I better or does he like me better,”
“You know it's both,”
You hum and continue typing on your laptop.
“I’ll go with you if you're scared,”
“I’m not scared!”
“Then why aren't you going?”
“Beucae Rukawa is a professional athlete and I trust he knows what he's doing,”
“And I’m his coach and I’m saying he's doing too much, get him out of the gym, hes pissing everyone off,”
“Why do I have to do it? It's not my responsibility,”
“I already told you, he likes you best”
This is the conversation you had with him in your office that led to you braving the night and walking to the training center. You show your stadium badge to the secretary behind the desk and she does not let you in. So you call coach and he doesn't answer, which leads to you calling Rukawa.
“Can you come down to the front desk,”
He's breathless as he speaks, “The front desk where?”
“Here, like where you are, the training center,”
Suddenly you are scared and nervous and don't know exactly what you’ll say to Rukawa. When he gets down to the lobby he bursts through the doors, head whipping back and forth to find you.
“Did something happen?”
“What? No? Did coach not tell you I was coming?”
Rukawa's shoulders drop, and he shakes his head no.
“He wants you out of the gym,” He runs a hand through his hair, “he says you're stressing everyone out,”
Rukawa hunches over on his knees, he huffs.
“He couldn't tell me that?”
“He says he did and you didn't listen.”
He flops back onto the couch that's in the lobby. You stand there holding the strap of your work bag. You aren't sure what's supposed to happen next, are you supposed to sit down with him? Is he actually going to leave? He wraps the healthy leaf of the house plant that's next to the couch around his fingers. It shines underneath the lights, green, vibrant, of life.
“Have you ever been inside?”

Since Rukawa had given you a tour of the training center he was more prone to dropping by your office on days that he did not have games. He had also begun inviting you to practices. You had only been able to make it to two but they were interesting to watch. You didn't sit in the bleachers but rather in this hallway with windows that looked down onto the court. There were hardly any people there, and they appeared to be other employees.
You were not in your office though when Rukawa had popped in. He saw the drink on your desk and the light of the computer screen. He went wandering the basement offices in an attempt to find you. He grabbed his lunch too, he had come from a practice and was starving. He knew the building pretty well from his adventures in napping. He checked the water fountain, the break room but found you in the office supply closet. Which is where the big xerox machine was.
“Hey,”
You said to him as he entered the small room.
“You weren't in your office,”
“Well, yeah I had to make copies of these,”
Rukawa hoisted himself up on the cabinet next to the printer. He clipped the stacks of paper you were making with paper clips and set them aside for you as he munched on his food.
“Is that a whole bag of tomatoes?”
You asked, lifting up the scanner lid. Rukawa had brought a ziploc bag full of tomatoes to eat. He nodded.
“Do you want one?”
None of the tomatoes were of the same size or color, but most of them were small. He handed you one of the bite size ones, and you don't know what compelled you to do this, but you put it on the scanner with paper. You pressed the start button and bright light illuminated the room. With the lid open you could see the bar of light as it whirred left and right.
Rukawa took the paper off the glass and dumped the rest of the tomatoes on. You scanned dozens of different piles of the tomates. Flipping them over and rearranging them on the glass. All the images were being sent to your computer but also being printed out. Rukawa assisted. Moving the red bulbs this way and that.
“When we’re done can we go to the roof?”
“Sure,”
You say to him. Many weeks later you will visit Rukawa's apartment and find the printed tomatoes framed in the hallway of his house.

Miss Fortune ~ Chapter Twelve
Miss Fortune - Modern AU
Summary: Everyone in Cranford Falls knows the Prescott family. Not only do they run Miss Fortune’s Crystal occult shop in town, but they’re also known for their psychic abilities. On occasion, they’re even called into service to assist the police on particularly difficult cases. All except Alex Prescott, that is. Unlike her three sisters, she’s inherited none of her family’s gifts. At least that was what she thought until the day the dead guy showed up in her bedroom asking for her help in solving a murder. His own.
Six months after his brother Frerin’s death, Detective Thorin Durin is on a downward spiral of self-destruction until Frerin starts showing up in his apartment, claiming his death was not an unfortunate accident but was, in fact a murder. Trouble is, Frerin doesn’t know who did it, so he wants Thorin to reopen the case and solve it, with Alex’s help.
As they work together to find out just exactly what happened to Frerin, Alex and Thorin grow closer. Neither one knows it, but Frerin isn’t just looking to solve his own murder, he’s trying to help his brother cope with his loss as well, and to find happiness with the Prescott sister who’s known as the quiet one…

By five o’clock, Alex was certain her legs were about to fall off. She couldn’t remember the last time she walked so much. Her feet hurt. Her lower back hurt. She just wanted to go home and soak in a hot bath. Quite possibly for the rest of her life.
Thorin sighed as he sank into the driver’s seat. “Christ, I can’t believe no one has ever seen this kid. How is that even possible?”
“I don’t know.” She winced as she flexed both feet. Her calves were so tight, the muscles practically screamed when she moved. “All I know is I need a break.”
“I could use a drink.” He glanced over at her. “How about you?”
Could she ever. “That sounds perfect.”
“Good. Let me just go back to the station and clock out and we’ll grab a drink. Maybe dinner.”
“I’m liking this.”
He grinned. “Me, too.”
So they drove back to the station, and he unlocked his truck for her to wait in while he took care of whatever it was police officers did at the end of their shift. A few minutes later, he came striding across the lot. “And now, I’m off the clock until Saturday, six AM.”
“Lucky you. Tomorrow’s my day to help out in the shop. And with any luck, Gram will be coming home soon. From what Syd told me, she thinks Gram is just about finished.”
“What’s she doing?”
“A missing teenager in Maine. Her leads have gone cold, according to Syd, so she’s only going to be up there another day or two.”
“Does she know you can now see ghosts?”
“I don’t think so. I haven’t talked to her, but I think if one of my sisters told her, she’d have called me all excited. I think it bothered her more than it ever bothered me that I had no gifts.”
“No gifts?” He made a left at Chestnut Street and angled into the parking lot of Darcy’s Tavern, where he eased into a slot and killed the engine. “Don’t let them fool you, Alex. You’ve got plenty of gifts.”
She gave him a look, but he didn’t see it, as he yanked the keys from the ignition and then shoved open his door. As she eased down from her seat, he came around, shaking his head. “Just because you can’t see the future or read tea leaves doesn’t mean you’ve got nothing to offer, you know.”
“I know, but sometimes… I don’t know… I just always wanted to be like my sisters. Like my Gram. It sucks when you’re the oddball in your own family.”
“You’re not an oddball, Lex.” His voice grew soft, his eyes serious. “And don’t let them make you feel any different.”
She leaned back against his truck. “It’s hard not to, when they won’t let me forget it by acting so surprised that I can see Frerin now. I’d swear that not a one of them believes me, to be honest.”
“Screw ’em then,” he told her, moving closer. “I like you the way you are.”
“You don’t even know me, Detective.”
He loomed over her, all broad chest and shoulders, and his smile was soft. “Sure I do. You say things sometimes without thinking, you try new things even when they scare the shit out of you, you’re funny, you care about people, you smell good, you have a beautiful laugh, I’ve wanted to ask you out since last fall and right now? All I want to do is kiss you.”
A smile tugged at her lips even as her heart picked up its pace. “I smell good?”
He nodded and she sucked in a sharp breath as he leaned in and nuzzled her. His beard scratched lightly against her skin, in a way that sent a shiver down her back and brought a sigh to her lips. Her eyes closed as his lips just brushed her skin and in a silky voice, he purred, “You smell like the air after it rains, Lex. Very good.”
“Oh…” His lips brushed the side of her neck again. Warm. Soft. The caress made her eyelids heavier. Made her skin tingle. Made her heart beat faster still.
“I could smell your perfume on my flannel last night.” His lips skimmed along her jaw. “And all I wanted to do at your door last night was this.”
With that, he moved, his lips coming down onto hers. Warm. Soft. Parting as the tip of his tongue touched her pursed lips. Her eyes closed. Her lips parted. His tongue caressed hers in a lazy, teasing stroke that left her gripping the front of his henley with one hand.
He pressed against her, pressed her up against the side of his truck, his body firm and hard, one arm easing about her waist, his free hand braced against the truck’s roof support. The kiss deepened. His beard scraped softly against her skin. His tongue teased hers, drew hers back into his mouth, and she was pretty sure he sighed as his arm tightened about her.
The kiss lasted at least two lifetimes and when he drew back, he was breathless as he murmured, “Damn…”
“Damn good, or damn bad?” The words came out in an airy whisper as she tilted her head back to meet his beautiful blue eyes.
“Damn good.” He smiled, pressing his forehead to her. “Damn very good, actually.”
“Is that so?”
“Oh, yeah.” He straightened up, but didn’t release her right away. Instead, he brought his hand to her face, his index finger catching her beneath her chin to tilt her face up to his. “I think we should go out, Lex.”
“We already did.”
“I mean for real. Without guns.”
“That was fun, though.”
“You hated it.”
“I didn't hate it. At least, not all of it.” She took a deep breath and smiled up at him. “I liked watching you.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” She had to force her fingers to loosen on his shirt. But since the first time she met Detective Durin, she wanted to touch him, wanted to know just what lay beneath the denim and cotton of his clothes. So, with a slight hesitation, she released his shirt, bringing that hand to his hip.
He smiled, his forefinger sliding along her jaw. “You liked watching me shoot?”
“I know, it’s weird. But… I don’t know… I liked it.”
“Okay, will you go out with me if I take you shooting again?”
“I’d love to go out with you, even if you don’t take me shooting again.”
“Good.” He dipped back to her and this time, when his lips met hers, she slid her hand from his hip up along his side. He was solid beneath her fingers. So solid. Apparently, he was no stranger to working out and she wondered what his six-pack looked like, wondered what his chest and shoulders looked like. What did the rest of him look like?
Would she ever find out?
She shivered and Thorin pulled away to whisper, “Are you cold?”
“No. I’m fine.”
“What about dinner? Are you hungry?”
“I could go for dinner.”
He pulled back to nod in the general direction of the tavern door. “The food here’s not bad. Burgers, fries, stuff like that. But if you want something a little nicer—”
She grabbed a handful of his henley again to tug him down. “Here is fine,” she whispered before pulling him down to meet her kiss this time. He laughed as their lips met, but the arm about her waist tightened, his hand splayed against her back, and he returned her kiss with a leisurely caress that sent a chill running through her.
He pulled away just enough to murmur, “We should go in. It gets crowded fast.”
Her stomach growled then, loud enough that he heard it as well, as he chuckled and added, “See?”
“Okay. You win.” She pulled back and smiled up at him. “Let’s go eat.”
He caught her by the hand, threading his fingers with hers, and gave it a gentle squeeze. “We’ve got plenty of time, Alex. Plenty of it.”
***
Alex had never eaten at Darcy’s and thankfully, Thorin hadn’t lied. It wasn’t fancy, but it was delicious. She was pretty sure a cheeseburger never tasted so good and the fries were beyond wonderful.
She glanced across the table at Thorin. Maybe he had something to do with how good everything tasted. Low lighting created such a cozy atmosphere and the flameless candles flickering around them glinted off Thorin's dark hair, which looked as if he combed it by running his fingers through it. It was wavy, which led her to wonder if it curled when the humidity rose, the same way hers did. He also didn’t look quite so tired any more. There were still shadows beneath his eyes, but they seemed far lighter now.
Nibbling at a french fry, she smiled when his foot nudged hers under the table. “Stop that.”
“Stop what?” he asked, all innocence. “I didn’t do anything.”
“You keep touching my foot.”
“I’ve got long legs, I can’t help it.” A wink accompanied his words.
“So that’s your excuse?”
“So I don’t have long legs?”
“Very funny.”
He nudged her foot again and this time, she did it right back. She’d forgotten how much fun it could be to flirt with a guy. It’d been ages since her last date, and from what she remembered, Stuart wasn’t exactly the playful type.
Then again, when she first met Thorin, she would have said the same thing. But he certainly seemed playful tonight. It was nice to see, since she had the feeling it wasn’t something he felt often. His mood had brightened considerably since they left the police station.
He dipped a fry into the small puddle of ketchup on his plate. “So, we struck out where Yuri is concerned. Either he’s only a figment of yours and Terri's imaginations, or he just happened to see you in the mall and thought it’d be fun to screw with you.”
“Or someone did know him, and they just didn’t want you to know it.”
“I thought of that.” He gestured to her with the half-chewed fry. “And it’s possible. I have a couple of people I can talk to. One of them might know who he is.”
“People. Informants? You mean, like in the movies?”
He grinned. “Yeah. Something like that.”
She picked up her cheeseburger, wincing as grease dribbled over her hand. It was probably the juiciest burger she’d ever had, but it certainly messy. Dabbing at her lips with her crumpled napkin, she swallowed before saying, “So what do we do next?”
“Tonight—” he winked—“or in the investigation?”
Heat swept through her. She hadn’t really given much thought to what the rest of the night might hold for them. But now, the thoughts swirled through her mind, each one making her warmer than the last. Needs she’d managed to tamp down for almost a year surged to the forefront of her mind as she stared at him.
“I—uh—I mean in the investigation, actually.”
His grin grew devilish. “You’re blushing.”
“I am not!”
“Oh, but you are.”
“Oh, Christ…” She tried to will the heat from her face, to no avail.
“Let’s just take things slow with us, okay?” he said, his voice low and soothing. “I’m not looking to rush into anything and we’ve both got a lot going on right now. So, we’ll take each day as it comes.”
She swallowed hard. Slow was not how she wanted to take them at all at the moment. Her fingers practically itched to tug his shirt over his head, to unbuckle his belt, to see just what lay beneath his cool exterior. Besides, it’d been over a year since she last slept with someone. A. Year. The queen mother of all dry spells.
Her thoughts went back to her conversation with Terri about why she thought she didn’t want to date Thorin.
Without thinking, Alex glanced at the chair in the corner, almost expecting to see Frerin there, grinning at her. But the only thing grinning at her from the chair was a stuffed Vermont Teddy bear that Charlie had given her for her college graduation. “I have so had great sex.”
“Liar.” Terri snorted. “If that was true, you’d be chomping at the bit to get the good detective naked. As naked as you could, as fast as you could.”
Looking across the table at him through lowered lashes, she found herself wondering what sex with him would be like, and somehow, she just knew it would be amazing. It couldn’t be anything else. Her mind simply wouldn’t accept that a guy who looked like him and was built like him and kissed the way he did, would be anything other than utterly astounding in bed.
But, if he wanted to take things slow, she was not going to blow it all already by pouting about how she just wanted to sleep with him now.
With that, she nodded as if she totally agreed, saying, “Oh, absolutely,” before diving back into her burger.
It was nearly seven by the time they finished and when they stepped outside, the sun had almost set completely. The air, warm during the day, took on a bit of a chill as darkness crept in.  That chill bit into her with dull teeth. As the shiver rippled through her, she wrapped her arms about herself without even thinking.
“Just when you think summer is actually here,” Thorin draped his arm about her shoulders, tugging her closer, “Mother Nature just has to prove you wrong.”
Somehow, she didn’t mind quite so much. She fit perfectly against him, and when she eased her arm about his waist, it was like she’d been doing it forever. “It won’t be long before everyone is complaining about how hot and sticky it is instead.”
“Oh, I’m not complaining about it being cool. I prefer the cold to the heat any day. Every summer, I’m reminded that New Jersey is nothing more than a giant swamp. And I hate that it’s a giant swamp.”
“Really?” She glanced up at him. “I would take you for a warm weather guy.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I just would.”
“Nope. I’ll take skiing over melting any day of the week.”
“You ski?”
“Why do you sound so surprised?” He aimed the key fob at his truck and deactivated the alarm.
Pulling away from him, she leaned against the passenger door and gave him a slow up and down perusal. He certainly had the build of an athlete, and she wondered what other sports he did. “Do you do much skiing?”
“Every chance I get. I have a condo up outside of Stowe, in Vermont, and when I can get away—and I don’t have someone renting it—that’s where you’ll find me. Do you ski?”
She shook her head. “No, I don’t. I always wanted to learn, the opportunity just never presented itself.”
“Damn shame. You don’t know what you’re missing.”
“You mean aside from broken bones?”
He chuckled over that. “It’s not that bad. I’ve only ever broken a wrist and cracked a couple of ribs and I’ve been skiing since I could walk. When I was a kid, my parents owned a condo in Wilmington and my brother and sister and I learned to ski on Mt. Snow.” He smiled, leaning up against the F-150’s fender. “You should’ve seen us. No fear, flying down a run—”
His smile faded along with his voice and he shifted to peer over his shoulder, as if expecting to see someone standing behind him. When the silence stretched, she touched his upper arm. “Thorin? What’s wrong?”
“I had a fight with Frerin last night. He’s pissed and rightfully so and I just want to tell him….” He rubbed his eyes with one hand. “It sucks, when you run out of chances to make things right. And it sucks when you’re the one left behind. And he has every right to be furious with me, and I hate that I can’t make it up to him.”
“Make what up to him?”
He just held her gaze for a long moment, then shook his head. “I’d rather not talk about it, Lex. It’s nothing I’m proud of and it involves another woman and I really don’t want anything to ruin what’s been a really good night.”
Those words were like a punch to the gut for her, but she managed to keep her reaction to herself. Beside she probably didn't want to hear anything that involved another woman anyway.
He caught her beneath the chin with his index finger once more and lifted her face to his. “It has been a great night, Alex. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”
“So, why didn't you?”
He offered up an almost sheepish grin. “I was afraid you’d turn me down.”
She shook her head. “I wouldn’t have.”
“I should’ve asked. Would’ve saved us a lot of time.”
He bent to her again, and this time, when their lips met, his arms slid about her waist and pulled her hard against him. She didn't care about the people passing them on the street, or the ones meandering by on the sidewalk. They didn't matter. All that mattered was that he kissed her long and slow and deep and teasing, and when he drew her tongue back into his mouth, her toes actually curled in her Chucks.
He slowly broke the kiss, sweeping his lips lightly across hers once more before drawing back and she almost laughed at her breathlessness when she whispered, “So, what next?”
He stepped back, unlocking the truck and tugged open her door for her. “I really don’t know,” he said, closing the door behind her as she settled into her seat.
“You don’t know?”
He skirted the nose of the truck and climbed into the driver’s seat and turned over the ending.“Well, Yuri is a dead end,” he said, as he carefully backed out of the space. “That was the problem with the original investigation. Every lead turned into a dead end. Whoever set the fire that killed Frerin has to be a phantom.”
She smiled. “Well, if that were true, wouldn’t he have seen him on the other side?”
He didn’t even look at her and she sighed softly. “That was a joke.”
“It’s not really funny. We tend to dislike cold cases. Cold cases mean no justice for the victim. And I don’t like cold cases when I don’t know the victim personally. It really pisses me off now because it involves my brother.”
Heated shame washed over her and her gaze fell to her hands, folded in her lap. “You’re right. I’m sorry. It was a lousy thing to say and I’m sorry.”
An uncomfortable silence settled over the truck’s cab. Thorin drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, while she shifted to peer out the window at the growing darkness. Her heart sped up as she murmured, “I forget he’s dead, you know.”
She looked over at Thorin. “Frerin, I mean. I mean, he shows up in my room and he’s just so alive… I can’t even imagine how it must be for you.”
She couldn’t. She tried to imagine what it would be like to lose one of her sisters. Or Terri. Or even Gram. She just couldn’t. As aggravating as they could be and as much as they could bicker with one another, she simply couldn’t imagine any one of them not being only a phone call away at the farthest. Frerin’s death had to leave a gaping hole in Thorin’s life, and she just oh-so-cavalierly joked about it, like there was anything amusing in his death at all.
Thorin was quiet, just staring straight ahead, and it wasn’t until they reached a stop light about a block from her house that he said, “Tell me about it. He pops in on me and it all comes rushing back. It’s like losing him all over again.”
Without thinking, she let her hand come to rest again his shoulder. “I’m really sorry I said that. It was stupid and thoughtless and Gram’s always telling me I need to think before I speak. She’s right, you know. I say things that sound funny in my head but are really thoughtless and not at all funny.”
He eased to a stop at the curb in front of Gram's house and shifted into park, but left the engine idling. He remained quiet, fiddling with one of the radio knobs, turning the classic rock station a little louder, then softer. But then, he lifted his gaze to meet hers. “Don’t apologize,” he said, his voice so low, she barely heard it. “You didn’t say anything to apologize for.”
“Yeah, I did. Gram's always yelling at me about remembering to think before I speak. It’s such a terrible habit I have, just blurting things out that I think are funny, but either they aren’t funny or they come out all wrong.”
“Really, Alex, you don’t. It’s okay.” He sighed softly, then ran a hand through his hair. “I wanted to work it at the time, but of course my captain wouldn’t let me, and I understand it, but it still drove me fucking nuts. And I was so damn sure it would be quickly solved and the guy responsible would pay. But, every goddamn lead went ice-cold within days, and we couldn’t even find a person in interest, never mind make an actual arrest.”
“But you know something?” He looked over at her, his eyes pale slivers of glittering ice. “It won’t matter in the end anyway. Frer’s still gone. Still,” he sighed, “I want to find the guy responsible. I just—I want to know why at this point.”
She could only imagine the frustration that had to create for everyone who worked on this case. It drove her crazy, and she’d only been involved for a few days. But somehow, she just felt like she owed Frerin, that she had to help him. And what’s more, she wanted to help him. someone had literally gotten away with murder and as Gram's flesh and blood, Alex couldn’t let that go on. Not if she or anyone in her family could possibly help.
“We’ll find the person responsible. We—we just have to,” she told him, leaning over to cover his hand with hers. “When Gram gets home, I’ll ask her what we do next. She always knows.”
He smiled, but she noticed with a pang that this one never reached his eyes. “She couldn’t help at the time, Alex. What makes you think she’ll be able to now?”
“Misguided optimism?”
He laughed then, but like the smile that never reached his eyes, it held precious little humor. “Right. I’m afraid I’ve lost my ability to be optimistic these days, be it misguided or not.”
“Well, maybe someday, you’ll get it back.”
“Don’t count on that, Alex.” His voice took on a hard tone. “You get to a certain point when it just becomes impossible.”
“That’s too bad.” She tightened her hand about his. “You should never give up hope. Sometimes, that’s all you have.”
He looked over at her then, his eyes soft in the glow of the streetlight. “I’ll leave that up to you. You seem to be good at not giving up on hope.”
“I’ve seen Gram scold too many people for losing hope, only to have their hope restored. As far as she’s concerned, there is always hope when the outcome is unclear. Things may not turn out the way you want them too, but until that time, hope is never misplaced or unwarranted. Hope is what keeps people like you moving forward, trying and working to find those answers. It’s what keeps her going when all signs tell her the person she’s looking for is dead. Sometimes, that person is just as dead as she feared. But other times, she finds them alive and only a little worse for the wear.”
“And that’s why I like Grandmama Prescott.”
“That’s why everyone likes her.”
“And it’s why I like her granddaughter, too.” His voice grew softer as he leaned over and kissed her lightly.
At least, it started out that way. But then, he slid an arm about her waist and gently tugged her over onto his side of the cab, into his arms, across his lap. Which was fine with her. She wound her arms about his neck, melted against him, and when his lips met hers, she couldn’t help arch into him. He was so firm, so solid, his arms strong about her. It was unlike anything she’d ever felt before.
She shifted, moving astride him. His beard scratched softly against her palms as she caught his face in her hands. His arms tightened about her. His lips moved gently against hers. His tongue stroked hers. Her heartbeat sped up. Her blood burned hotter in her veins, her pulse pounded through her temples. Everything inside her felt as if it tightened and twisted into knots of pure red desire.
Thorin skimmed one hand up her back, moved the other one down, over her hip, along her thigh. Heat from his palm sank into her leg. Dear God, she couldn’t remember the last time her head spun so wildly, or the last time the butterflies danced so madly within her belly. She didn’t want their kiss to end. Didn’t want him to pull away.
Didn’t want to stop at just kissing.
Perhaps it was only her imagination, but she was pretty sure she felt Thorin's heart racing and she definitely didn’t imagine his heavy breaths. She settled against him, the telltale pressure of him rising against her made both of them inhale sharply and exhale heavily and within minutes, the F-150’s windows fogged. His hands slid along the curve of her waist, along her ribs.
His fingers brushed the outer curves of her breasts.
Fire shot through her.
He did it again, let his thumbs slip along the outer contours to send shivers coursing through her. Any minute, and he’d tug her shirt from the waist of her jeans.
Any minute and she’d feel his hands on her bare skin. On her breasts.
The cab grew warmer and warmer.
Any—
—minute.
Thorin was beyond breathless. Possibly even more so than she was.
His lips smoked a path along her neck as she let her head fall back, Her skin tingled from his touch. He kissed down into the hollow of her throat, groaning softly as she threaded her fingers through his thick, soft hair, hoping he’d move lower still.
Any—
—minute.
But then, he pulled back with a soft groan. “Wait… Alex, honey…”
“Wait? I don’t want to wait…” He had no idea how long it’d been for her and she wanted to end her damn insane dry spell. Now.
She wanted to sleep with him.
“I know, but… Christ…” He winced, shifting her slightly. “I don’t really want to, either, Alex… but we should.”
“But—” She clamped her lips together before she could sound too desperate. The last thing she wanted to do was scare him off. “Of course. You’re right. We should wait,” she managed to grit, unspent desire morphing into knots of frustration as she reached up to shove her hair out of her eyes.
“Honey, trust me, there is nothing I want more than to just pull you into the backseat like we were a couple of teenagers,” he managed to smile, brushing her hair away from her right cheek with gentle fingers. “But we aren’t teenagers and I prefer beds to backseats any day of the week.”
“I’m—I’m sorry. It’s just… it’s been a really long time and you really know how to kiss and—” Heat climbed into her cheeks as he let out a low chuckle. “I know. I should shut up before I embarrass myself even more.”
“You aren’t, Alex. Trust me, this—” he slid his arms about her once more to pull her closer, his lips just brushing hers as he went on in a husky whisper, “is damn near impossible to walk away from and it’s taking every last bit of willpower I have to do just that. But we’ve got time. Like I said at Darcy’s, I don’t want to rush.”
“I don’t either.” Like hell she didn’t, but since she certainly couldn’t say that…
“So, tomorrow, I’ll track down a couple of my guys and see what information they might have.”
“I thought you were off tomorrow. You said until Saturday.”
“I’m doing this on my own time, remember?” His fingers brushed upward, then down along her back in short, soft strokes. “What time are you working until?”
“Six.” She tried like crazy to keep from noticing how each one of those caresses sent a delicious shiver through her. God, if this was how her body reacted to him because of innocent touches, what would having sex with him be like? Somehow, she had the feeling there would be no words to describe how wonderful it would be.
“I’ll try to stop by sometime before then, depending. And if I can’t, I’ll let you know and maybe we can go do dinner—a real dinner, in a nice place, when you’re done for the day.”
“That works.”
“Good.” His eyes softened and he brushed her lips with his once more, then whispered, “Let me walk you to the door, Alex.”
Reluctantly, she eased off his lap, back into the passenger seat, squinting as he opened his door and the interior light blazed to life. She was still blinking, still seeing spots as she slid down to the sidewalk, but they cleared as he came around and caught her by the hand. His thumb grazed hers, his fingers tightening as they laced with hers. “So, what exactly do you do when you mind the store?”
“I do everything but offer to tell futures.” She glanced up at him as they mounted the porch steps. “I know what all our products are used for, and how to use them. Even though I was the oddball, Gram made sure to teach me everything she taught my sisters.”
He faced her, catching her other hand as well. Bringing both to his lips, he swept kisses along each set of knuckles, then said, “You’re not the oddball any longer.”
“Not now, anyway. But since it was nearly thirty years before I was able to see the dead, who knows if it’s only temporary. Maybe it was just because Frerin really needed me.”
“Maybe.” His voice softened and a hint of darkness flashed through his eyes, but it was gone so quickly, she couldn’t be certain she hadn’t just imagined it. “He’s a smart guy. He knew which sister would help him no matter what.”
“Well, I think any of them would. It’s what Prescotts do, remember.”
“He’s still a smart guy to come to you.” Thorin leaned in and kissed her lightly on the lips, then pulled back. “I’ll either see you or talk to you tomorrow.”
“Okay. Good night, Thorin. And thank you. I had a nice time.”
He winked. “I did, too, Alex. Good night.”
He kissed her once more, and then was off, whistling softly as he walked back to his truck. She waved as he pulled away from the curb, and then went inside.

The Door
There is this door in our minds that contains a memory. Behind that door is a version of yourself from the past as far back as you can remember. The door is locked until you are ready. Once you are the door will open and sitting at a dinner table will be the version of yourself that needs you to sit down and have a conversation with her.
We go through a lot growing up. From early childhood to adolescence we experience both good and bad things that ultimately shape who we will be as adults. From what I have learned, some of these experiences are neutral at first. We as children can’t decipher whether these things were good or bad until the long term effects emerge as young adults. That being said, looking at her cute little face and unbrushed hair, sitting at this table it reminded me of something. When I was a kid my dad used to take me to this casino that had a play room for kids down stairs. The parents would go to the casino to drink and gamble so they could drop their kids off at this play room with some money. The play room was bright and had pool tables, foos ball, arcade games, snack machines, everything a kid could ask for. As a child I thought this was the best place on earth. I got to meet new friends which instantly became my best friends. I used to beg my dad to go every weekend. Of course, being a kid having a great time playing games with all the of her new best friends, I never wanted it to end. When my dad would come back to get me I would beg him to stay a little while longer. My dad wasn’t much of a gambler, but he sure was a drinker. By 8 years old I knew that a tequila shot was $2.25 which he would then give me the remaining 75 cents. In those days that was at least three more games. I used to beg him to buy another shot so I could have the quarters and continue playing. Over and over again this would happen until finally it was time to leave. A disappointed 8 year old reluctantly leaving the best place on earth looking back as though to say goodbye to all her best friends she had just made that night. She climbed into the truck with her dad and drove home. Her dad would take all the back roads and say we were going on a great adventure.
She did not understand the back roads were to avoid the police on the main road. She did not understand this meant her dad was drunk on countless tequila shots and who know how many beer in between. Now operating a vehicle that could very well take the life of him, his daughter or anyone else currently on the road. The look on her face had changed. She looked scared and tears were welling up in her eyes. As she pulled her legs on to the chair and hugged them into her chested I replayed the memory again. This time from my perspective. The play room was bright, but the walls were dingy. There were other kids, but they pretty much ignored me when I asked if I could play winner on the pool table. There were snacks, but it was usually stale chips and candy so hard it could break your teeth. I did play pinball though for most of the three hours I was there. When we left we climbed two flights of stairs and that when I realized the play room was in the basement and the moment I hit the stairs all I could smell was cigarettes and cheap perfume. The drive home took forever and every time my dad drove into the dirt on the side of the road a small bit of fear hit me in the gut.
Now being an adult and being educated on the consequences of drinking and driving. I also have to face the consequences of my dads actions knowing that 8 year old me was the one begging my dad to take one more shot so I could play more pinball in a dingy basement alone. I just want to scream and ask my dad why my life meant less than that bottle. Why did you allow me to take responsibility for your actions? Now I have to tell this little 8 year old that it wasn’t her fault and he was the adult that should have made better decisions. My adult self now has to comfort her at that dinner table and tell her that she is safe. That her life means more to me than anything else. This conversation with her has made me realize that those actions 20 years ago made me go through life thinking I wasn’t worthy, I thought I was disposable.
Walking through this door after talking to that 8 year old, healing her, ultimately healed a part of me that I didn’t know needed to be healed. Getting up from that table, hugging her and telling her that I love her and she has protection now gave me a small sense of peace. Walking out, closing that door behind me, I don’t lock it because somehow I know I will be returning. As I turn I notice the hallway is full of doors and who knows what versions of myself are behind each one and what memories they hold. There is only one way to find out.

Eddie Brock/Venom x Reader
summary : Eddie grows worried due to your absence and is soon convinced by Venom to go out and check on you. Yet when he finds you and countless others bruised and hurt, there's only one suspect; and Eddie suddenly has an urge to end them.
main tags : imagine , comfort , female reader
warnings : blood mention
Eddie walked around the messy living room as the kitchen clock ticked by each passing second. Every minute that passed, he grew more and more worried about your well-being. You were only heading to the pharmacy, so why had you been gone for so long?
"Eddie." Venom suddenly called, interrupting the silence. "We should check on her."
Part of Eddie immediately agreed and wanted to leave right away, yet another part of him said that it was just his paranoia causing him to stress this much.
"I'm probably just overthinkin'," He told Venom as he continued to wander around the living room, starting to pop his knuckles as some sort of relief. "She can definitely handle herself anyways-"
"No.. I sense something unsettling from afar, she's in danger Eddie." Eddie wanted to tell Venom that he was just getting paranoid too, but from the tone of voice, he was calling it.
Eddie really didn't want to acknowledge the possibility of you being hurt, and dare God bring up the idea of death occurring to you. "Fine! Fine, let's go," Eddie said as he quickly grabbed his keys before heading out the door. He hoped both him and Venom was just exaggerating in the end.
He ran out of the apartment and into the car. The drive to the pharmacy wasn’t too far, yet within a few minutes, Eddie could sense something wasn't right either. The smell of smoke slowly filled the air, causing Eddie to panic. "Shit!" He quickly said under his breath.
Eddie soon drove up to see police cars and fire trucks circled around a part of the street. They were destroyed, buildings damaged and on fire; one being the pharmacy you ran to. Eddie felt a pit in his stomach at the sight of the event while he quickly parked and got out of the car. He greatly stressed over his biggest priority: you.
Eddie tried to take a closer look, but was stopped by officers who refused access towards everyone. There was a moment of him and the officer going back and forth as Eddie hardly kept a hold of himself, fortunately, there was a cry in the distance to distract him. "Hey!" Both turned to see you afar and slowly walking towards them. Once you caught up to both men, you quickly told the officer that Eddie was here for you before pulling Eddie aside to catch him up on what went down.
You both stood on the sidewalk as there was a moment of silence. Just being by each other was enough to calm both of you down, because while Eddie was calming himself from fear, you were still processing some bits of what just went down. You tried to say something to break the silence, but Eddie carefully placed his hands on your face. While his intention was to get a closer look to what happened to you, but he also managed to help you catch a few more breathers and collect more of yourself.
Once he finally got a look up close though, he was hugely pissed. You were covered in small scars along with a few bandages wrapped around your arms and legs. You seemed to have taken a bit of the hit but luckily didn't get the worse of it compared to the few other victims Eddie saw. "Oh my God, Y/n. What- what happened?"
You tried to recall everything that went down even though it was a lot to take. "So.. Uh, someone decided to go rapid and attack the street," you turned around to point out the order of the events, "Some pieces from buildings were thrown and one of them almost flew on top of the pharmacy. Some believe it was some kind of explosion that cause it, while others think it was something else."
You continued to explain the rest of your story and even some of the other victims, how some witnessed pieces almost be thrown directly at them, while others had the unfortunate sight of seeing bodies be split in half or have their heads crushed in. But it was clear no one was able to get a sight of the one behind this, those who did must have been the ones killed. Eddie felt a lot of emotions come over him but the two who majorly left was anger and guilt.
Anger from the fact someone dared to cause havoc in the town. Someone dared to put your life in extreme danger. While you managed to play it off, the fact someone went far enough to cause you to have blood running down your face enraged him.
Yet he felt guilty, guilty that the harm to came your way was his fault. He should've been there for you when times called, yet he wasn't. And that's what weighed him down.
Eddie soon took a grip to both of your arms, "Y/n. Are you sure no one knows who’s behind this. No one got even a glimpse?" It was a rare sight to see Eddie so visually frustrated so you were caught by surprise. But there was no need for you to answer as Eddie took it back shortly, the pieces were already clicking together for him by the passing second. The choices already dialed down to one person, and that person made Eddie furious.
It’s uncommon for them to make a move just to retreat; they didn’t just attacked the street on pure decision. They might have known you were making an errand and proceeded to attack on that info.
This whole incident could’ve been nothing more but a major way to fuck with Eddie. And fueled him with enough rage to punch a hole in the wall, only to hold himself back was you as he wanted to show some decency.
Trying his best to keep his anger in, he let go of his grip on you and took a moment. "..Come on. Let's get you home first. I have something to handle myself and I’d prefer you be home while I’m gone." Fully agreeing, you inform the authorities of your sudden leave before you and Eddie got in his car and drove home.
In the small ride back, you couldn’t help but notice the irritation Eddie was keeping a hold of. His grip seemed a bit too tight on the steering wheel, and his breathing seem a bit too unkept. But you didn’t push yourself to ask him anything about it.
Once you both made it home, you walked into the apartment before turning back and looking at Eddie. “Are you sure you wanna leave after what happened? It may not be safe for tonight.” Logically speaking, Eddie should be staying close with you as you would do with him if he was in your spot, but to see Eddie go run this errand made you question a few things.
Eddie couldn’t help but smile as he slowly walked up to you, "I’ll be fine, it’s better if I run and handle it now then wait till later." He soon gave you a small kiss on your forehead before stepping back and heading off, "I'll be back, and don’t leave the house for the rest of the night." Before you could respond and interrogate Eddie some more, he was already getting in the car and backing up. You decided to listen and head to your given room, yet wondering why Eddie sounded so confident in what he was doing. Maybe later on you can ask him about this incident again.
Either way, you cared for yourself and attend to your scars, time slowly went on and on until, ironically, you found yourself in Eddie’s spot for a moment or two. But with the affects of the attack, you couldn’t help but given into your sleepiness and decided dosed off to bed.
While you got some sleep, Eddie was out catching some Carnage to end this memorable night.

***
When it came to love languages, you and Jay were quick to work out what the other liked. Your love language being gift giving and his being touch and affirmation, the pair went hand in hand with the both of you being more than happy with the way affection was shown in the relationship.
You were constantly picking things up for Jay if you’d see something that reminded you of him or simply something you know he’d like. A shirt of his favourite american football team, a new pair of sunglasses as he’d broken his others a few weeks before or a cheeky guesture of a new pair of grey joggers as he moans you constantly steal his. At this point, he was always on your mind so you could see a bottle of water and be taken back to the time where you’d seen him pick up the same one at a gas station on route to work. Maybe you’d pass someone in the street and get a whiff of their cologne and be reminded of the many mornings it would be the first thing you smelt as you’re awoken to soft kisses being pressed into your skin as he engulfs you with his arms within the imprinted sheets.
It didn’t matter how big or small it was, you wanted to show your affection by proving to him how often you thought of him, luckily this perfectly matched his affirmation desires so you were more than happy to ablige. Something so small as a cute keyring you picked up on vacation as it had a certain phrase on it that caused him to flash through your mind. He would instantly attach to his keys so whenever he looked at it he thought about how you’d gone out of your way to buy it for him, and how he must’ve been in your thoughts, it meant alot to him. You’d even bought him an ice scraper for his truck as he was constantly moaning he didn’t have one and felt bad about always borrowing yours and to this day he still uses it, even though it’s in a pretty worse for wear state he still can’t bring himself to get a new one as it wouldn’t give him that little boost of serotonin to picture you strolling through the store and the smile on your face as you took it to the checkout.
At first, you felt you were being over the top with the words of affirmation towards Jay. Did he really need to hear you tell him how much you love him, multiple times a day? Surely he knows by now and didn’t need you to tell him this much but he basked in your expressions and was constantly looking forward to the next time the words he craved fell from your lips.
'I’m so glad you made it home safe’
‘Did I tell you how much I love when you cook for me, baby?’
‘I’m so proud of you, Jay’
‘Thank you for everything you do for me’
The glowing feeling you get to see the heat creep to his cheeks, the doting looks he would give you and the way his grip on you would tighten at the smallest of affirmations confirmed how much he loved to hear it. He wouldn’t even have to verbally respond, a simple kiss to your temple or a content hum would be enough to acknoweldge that you knew exactly what he wanted and needed to hear.
His love language of touch was something you had to get used to. Jay was your first proper boyfriend, you’d dated on and off in the past but he was the only one who’s stuck around. He on the other hand, had more expeirence in the dating world so seemed to know more about it than you and with that came more things that just felt natural to him, but was a shock to your system.
He without a doubt Jay had to have his hands on you in some way, these desires varied depending on the situation you were in and what he felt was necessary. In public his hand would be pressed into your lower back as he guides you through a crowded place, his grip falling to your waist as you stood next to him in a que at the mall or his hand finding yours as you strolled along the street just to name a few.
His lips would press into your temple as you rested your head on his shoulder, the way he runs his fingertips up and down your back whilst you lean into him. Planting a soft kiss to the back of your neck as he creeps up on you pouring yourself a glass of water in the morning, him pulling you into him to place a chaste kiss to your lips just to show you his love took you by surprise.
You’d never had someone be so consumed by you that they needed to almost be a part of you but you loved it. Behind closed doors he was equally as attentive, fingernails grazing your arm as you lounge around watching a film, his hands finding their way on you as you cuddle into him. He would abscentmindidly fiddle with the ends of your hair as he concentrated on the TV, his mind fully on the screen but you were so much his main prioroty that he didn’t have to even think about it.
Even in his sleep, he needed you close to him, you’d fall asleep on the edge of the bed and wake up lying of his chest with the soft grazing of his fingernails down your spine, zero complaints but also no memory of how you got there. If he opened his eyes and he wasn’t holding you in some way, he’d automatically shift to intertwine your bodies under the sheets to sooth himself back to sleep.
If he was jealous, you’d know about it in a matter of seconds. The intenstity of his grip on you would tell you someone else was eyeing you up, before you got to see for yourself. The way he would pull you onto his lap and wrap his arm tightly round you to keep you in place. How he’d pull you inbetween his legs as he sits at the bar in Molly’s, grabbing at your waist as he settles you in front of him. Even so much as a heated kiss being placed upon you to firmly deter the eyes of another man wasn’t unheard of and again you had zero complaints.
Jay would find it adorable in the beginning of your relationship, noticing the way you’d glance down as he reached for your hand while you walked, trying to hide the smile that was spreading on your face. The chills you would get as he tangled his hands in your hair, the little quips you’d make at his sudden forms of intimacy were what spurred him on more. He loved the effect he had on you and moreover, he loved that you’d grown accustom to his love languages without a shadow of a doubt and were always there to accept them.
The little giggles you gave out as he pinned you onto the sofa to cover your face in light kisses, him digging his fingers into your sides as you were concentrating on something to make you jump. Reaching to tuck a piece of stray hair behind your ear had him always craving more as you leant into his touch.
People around you loved to comment on it too. Will would always dig at Jay whenever you were together with the familiar comment of ‘Will you just leave her alone for two seconds man’ as Jay responded with a scowl. He hated people telling him what to do and especially when it came to you, if anything it would give him more motivation to hold you closer. Adam would often joke about how if you needed to find Jay, just to look for you as you he would ‘follow you round like a lost puppy’, to others they thought it was cringey and annoying but you wouldn’t have it any other way. You were his weakness, he wore it like a badge of honor and he wanted everyone to know.

SOUL WATCH
everybody had the soul watch app, because everybody was curious to meet their soulmate. it was an app that told you when or how and gave you hints, but never who. and due to all the pressure, you downloaded the app too... just to find out you didn’t even have a soulmate after all.
PAIRING yang jungwon x gn! reader
THEMES soulmates au, highschool au, fluff, humour
Tumblr media
matching jewellery was a trend among soulmates when it came to being a highschool student. those that had found theirs wanted to show it off, basically shoving it into the faces of those that were still searching. walking down the corridors was a constant reminder that you didn’t have a soulmate for yourself, as matched couples would walk hand-in-hand with shiny bracelets or be seen wearing those missing piece style necklaces.
mondays. after freeing yourself from the couple-filled hallways, you sat down at your desk and placed your books onto the table with a huff. trying to block out your classmate bragging about meeting their soulmate over the weekend, you noisily checked around in your bag for your pencil case.
then came the clicking of your teacher’s heels as she entered the classroom, and there was a rush of students finding their seats. the squeaking of chair legs and quiet chatter only made you more annoyed at the world. to say discovering you were soulmate-less a few weeks prior had put you in a permanent bad mood would be an understatement.
but everything lit up as soon as yang jungwon appeared in the doorway. he apologised for being late, cheeks flushed and hair windswept. heat rose to your own cheeks at the sight of his sorry smile.
much to your dismay, he was a few seats to the back and to the right of you. he disappeared from your sight, making you slump sadly in your seat.
‘today is international soulmate day,’ your teacher smiled, setting her powerpoint up behind her. ‘as you all may know. there are many types of soulmate links out there, but i want to know about yours. so research and write about it — its origin, its rarity — and hand it in at the end of class.’
not sure what to do, you raised your hand. ‘what if you don’t have a soulmate?’ at the sound of your voice, jungwon looked up from his notebook. he didn’t have a soulmate either.
‘everybody has a soulmate, y/n,’ she reminded you. ‘maybe you entered your details into soul watch incorrectly.’
‘i don’t have a soulmate either,’ jungwon spoke up. you turned in your seat. ‘so what do we do instead?’
‘this is the first time i’m hearing of people being soulmate-less,’ she chuckled awkwardly, slightly panicked. ‘well, you’re both part of the student board aren’t you? just head down to the main hall and help the others set up for the soulmate dance.’
the soulmate dance. just the thought of it made you roll your eyes. you’d never attended, because you didn’t show interest in finding out until those few weeks ago, but you knew how cheesy it was. it was like every other kind of dance, totally cliché and super boring. except, you got to bring your soulmate.
you packed up your things as quickly as possible. as horrible it would be having to decorate for a stupid highschool dance that you wouldn’t even attend, at least jungwon would be at your side. and he must’ve understood your suffering, especially during international soulmate week on international soulmate day that just happened to fall on a monday.
you slung your bag onto your shoulder and followed jungwon out of the door. he walked slightly ahead of you, holding open each door for you which you quietly thanked him for.
when you made it to the main hall, the bright pink colour palette made your eyes burn. ‘this is going to be a long week,’ jungwon sighed, dropping his bag and leaving you at the door. mentally agreeing, you placed your own bag down beside his.
Tumblr media
you sort of felt bad for jungwon. it was depressing to know that you weren’t ‘destined’ for anyone, and that you’d have to find someone the old way. he seemed even less of a fan of soulmate week than you were, but he did seem really down about not having a soulmate of his own.
it was wednesday morning and you’d missed your bus. annoyed with yourself, you had to run to the nearest bus stop in hopes another bus would arrive soon. that was where you saw jungwon and his friends, all of them being upperclassmen.
trying not to be seen, you awkwardly leaned against the outside of the shelter and looked off to the side. ‘it’s not like i like them,’ jungwon argued, which earned a few laughs from the boys. ‘why would i ask them to the soulmate dance if we’re not soulmates?’
‘because you don’t want to spend saturday studying alone in your room?’ sunoo teased, ‘if they’re not matched, then you can ask them. no big deal.’
the bus pulled up in front of them. you waited for them to get on before following, avoiding eye contact and taking a seat at the back. ‘good morning, y/n,’ jake turned around to face you. ‘i didn’t know you take this bus.’
‘i don’t,’ you awkwardly replied. ‘i was late and missed my own bus.’
‘are you going to the dance on saturday?’ sunoo also joined in, smiling brightly at you.
‘oh, uh,’ you nervously fiddled with the straps of your bag. ‘no, i don’t have a soulmate.’
‘well, we were just telling little wonie here that you don’t need a soulmate to go,’ jay patted jungwon’s head, making the younger boy complain about him messing up his hair. ‘you could come with us.’
‘thank you...’ shifting uncomfortably in your seat, you looked between all of the boys who were staring eagerly at you. ‘for the offer... but i don’t want to go. it means a lot, i just don’t do school dances.’
the bus conversation was probably the most awkward thing that happened to you that day. or during lunch time, when you took a seat on a bench facing the sports field. there was jungwon once again, playing around with the same friends. you watched as jake gave up on running around and collapsed to the floor, with everyone mirroring his actions seconds later.
you’d always had a crush on jungwon. he was always so sweet and polite, with the perfect balance between humour and seriousness. you saw him as someone you could easily rely on and trust, despite never being close to him. his cheeks always had this natural blush and his laugh was addictive, and he looked so serious whenever he was concentrating. you felt your heart racing whenever he was around, but you never had the courage to confess to him.
as you got lost in your thoughts, you made eye contact with him across the field. panicked, you began packing your things away and into your bag. then you left, trying not to move too quickly so that it didn’t look suspicious.
after classes, you were called into the main hall once again. knowing today you’d have to be painting, you grabbed your change of clothes from your locker and headed into the changing rooms. coming back into the hall, you were met with jake and sunghoon covering each other in the baby pink paint.
you slipped past them and looked around for something to do. and then someone tapped on your shoulder. it was sunoo, who asked if you could help him with painting the banner. jungwon passed by you, sending you a soft smile before hurrying off towards jay. how did he seem to be everywhere?
Tumblr media
on friday afternoon, as you were exhausted from all the decorating you’d been doing, you were so glad to be able to go home and enjoy your weekend. the whole week had been a complete disaster, and you now had a strong dislike towards the colour pink. but much to your dismay, the head of the student board asked you to attend the soulmate dance in order to keep an eye on the students. why he chose you specifically, you had no idea.
so on saturday morning, you tried your best to drag yourself out of bed. though you really didn’t want to dress up for a highschool dance, there was an outfit you had in mind. things weren’t going to change, you weren’t going to randomly get a soulmate, but you stupidly had hope things could change.
you spent most of the day considering backing out, but gave in because you didn’t want to disappoint your classmate. you arrived at the main hall an hour and a half before the event, ready to set things up.
a few students were around, moving tables to either side of the hall. a large red carpet was being rolled through the centre of the room, leading out onto the school gardens. you turned around at the sound of your name, bumping into the source. they reached for your hand, preventing you from toppling over.
a shock of electricity shot through your arm, forcing you to snatch your hand back. ‘i’m so sorry,’ the voice spoke, and much to your dismay, it was jungwon.
you felt your heart racing again, heat rising to your cheeks in an instant. ‘it’s ok,’ you reassured him. ‘it was my fault, so i’m the one that’s sorry.’
‘well,’ he smiled. ‘i guess i’ll see you around.’
honestly, you felt like an idiot. he heard loud and clear just a few days ago that you didn’t want to go to the soulmate dance, but here you were. maybe he would realise you were being forced into it, but if he didn’t, then that would be humiliating.
you shook your head to clear yourself of all the thoughts. ‘y/n,’ turning on the spot, you were met with the sight of jay coming towards you. ‘you’re looking lost. i thought you weren’t coming.’
‘change of plan,’ you simply replied. ‘i was asked to help set up some things.’
‘well, i need help carrying some things in from the truck outside,’ he offered. ‘if you’d like to help.’ nodding, you followed behind him at a distance.
the sky was clear — not a single cloud in sight — and the sun was shining brightly. the back doors of the truck were open, workers from the catering company lowering large bottles of drinks onto the ground. jay gestured towards the cluster of fruit juice bottles before grabbing one for himself.
they were heavy, but you managed. walking at jay’s side, you couldn’t think of a conversation starter to make it all a little less awkward. but thankfully, or maybe not, he spoke up first. ‘you do know that jungwon has a crush on you, right?’
the bottle fell from your grip. panicked, you reached forward to catch it again. clearly the universe was on your side in that moment, because it didn’t split.
‘uh, no,’ you forced out a laugh, feeling your entire body heat up. ‘i did not know that.’
‘he denies it,’ jay shrugged, helping you lift the heavy bottle back up from the ground. ‘but we all see the way he looks at you. after he found out you were soulmate-less too, he wanted to ask you to the dance tonight. but when you said you weren’t going, he gave up on that idea.’
what were you supposed to say to that? as you placed the bottles beside the snack table, jay pushed them under it. turning around to see jungwon on the other side of the hall, you felt yourself swallowing your words before leaving to the outside again.
but avoiding jungwon wasn’t as easy as you had hoped. he seemed to be in your line of sight at all times and in all honesty, you weren’t even sure why you were avoiding him. after all, if what jay said was true, then the feelings were mutual. still, you couldn’t shift your mind away from the shock you had felt at his touch. you thought maybe you were going crazy and had imagined it, until your phone buzzed with a notification.
leaving jay to bring in the rest of the drinks, you leaned against the exterior wall and pulled out your phone. a notification from soul watch lit up your phone, 0 days until you meet your soulmate. eyes wide, you looked around the area, hoping to see someone checking their phone in that same moment. was that even possible?
you weren’t sure what to do. search for your soulmate? or would they just come naturally to you? did this mean jay was your soulmate? it was a possibility, considering you were with him when the notification came through.
‘you coming inside?’ speak of the devil. you quickly hid you phone, putting on a fake smile and nodding. ‘people will start arriving soon.’
as soon as the hall began to fill up with people, you wished you had never came back inside. you really needed some time and space to think everything through. there was that electricity when jungwon had helped you up, but then you should’ve gotten the notification in that moment, right?
you grabbed your phone from your bag, going out into an empty corridor. sliding down the wall beside the door and pulling up the soul watch app, you searched your profile for details. but all the information it had was about your soulmate link, which happened to be a countdown. and now that the countdown was over, there were no more hints?
you were in complete disbelief, but the soulmate dance wasn’t the place to be researching this.
‘i guess you got it too,’ you looked up to see jungwon. ‘you’ve been avoiding me all day, so you must’ve.’
‘i have not been avoiding you,’ but the redness of your cheeks suggested otherwise. ‘and got what? i don’t know what you’re talking about.’
‘a sudden notification that you’ve possibly met your soulmate...?’ he sat down beside you.
‘well actually,’ you could’ve laughed at how stupid you were about to sound. ‘i was avoiding you because of what jay said earlier. and i thought there was no way you could be my soulmate otherwise i would’ve received the notification after we bumped into each other.’
‘who else could possibly be your soulmate?’
‘what’s that supposed to mean?’ you turned your head to make eye contact. he quickly looked away and down at the floor, wishing he hadn’t been so bold with his last statement. jungwon was never this forward with people he wasn’t yet close to.
‘i know jay told you that i like you,’ he admitted. ‘and i’ve always known that you like me back. i just never thought to bring it up because i didn’t have a soulmate, and i thought you would have one.’
‘but you have a soulmate now,’ you reminded him, a smile lighting up your features. ‘or... however that works. do you think it has to do with us touching for the first time back then?’
‘you felt that too?!’ his eyes widened as he stared back at you. ‘i thought i was going crazy.’
‘do you want to go back inside?’ you gestured to the door into the main hall. jungwon shook his head, standing up and holding his hand out to you.
‘we could...’ he trailed off, looking behind himself at the exit. ‘or we could ditch this snooze fest and do something fun instead... like go to an arcade?’
‘sounds like a plan,’ you took his hand, letting him pull you up from the ground. he checked if the coast was clear before running towards the exit, the sound of your laughter filling the empty corridor.

Your first road trip with your boyfriend Haechan was simply unforgettable.
~
You were out on a journey with no destination and that decision was proving to be worse than you thought. After getting on the path that you were on for four hours straight, Haechan suggested that you get off the highway and detour to a small little off-road lane. At first, the daring exit seemed promising. But before you knew it, you had driven over a sharp stone, thereby puncturing not only your front tire but also the back tire adjacent to it. Having only one spare, there was no way you could make the repair. To add to your misery, when Haechan attempted to call roadside assistance, he was unable to do so as there was no cell service. The only way you’d be able to get some help was if you went back to the main road. However, neither of you were willing to leave the car behind - even though you knew that no one would try and steal a broken down car - and so, after a competitive round of rock-paper-scissors, it was decided that Haechan would make the trip back to the highway on foot underneath the blistering midday sun while you sat in the car, chilling peacefully in the ac.
It took him quite a while to return. He came bearing good news. A tow truck would arrive at your location in about two to three hours. Until then, all you both needed to do was sit tight and try not to panic in the lifeless location that you were stranded in. That was easier said than done.
There wasn’t much of a view beyond the windows. Just miles and miles of dull, dead grass. Not having much to do other than sit idle, Haechan grew bored quickly. He turned to you with a stoic expression. “Wanna fuck?”
You scoffed at his ridiculous suggestion. “In the middle of nowhere? Umm, absolutely not,” you answered, earning a whine from him. “The fact that there’s no one here makes it like ten times more ideal. There’s no chance of us getting caught,” he urged. You rolled your eyes even though he had a point. “Still, I didn’t bring any condoms.”
Haechan narrowed his eyes at you. “When I suggested that we go on a road trip you should’ve known that car sex was included. I shouldn’t have had to explicitly state it.”
Was he being serious? If you guys hadn’t made this stupid detour and were still driving along the highway, was he going to pull over and bone you while unsuspecting civilians drove past you both? Or worse, would he book a room at some cheap hotel for twenty-something minutes of undeniable pleasure?
“Well too bad for you then,” you chided, crossing your arms. “If it was a part of your plan, you should’ve prepared better.”
Haechan threw his hands up. You were unbelievable. He never thought he’d see the day when you refused sex simply because you had no protection. “I can always pull out you know.”
You laughed sarcastically, though you actually found his words genuinely humorous. “I didn’t wanna be the one to tell you this, but your pull out game sucks ass Hyuck.”
Haechan gasped dramatically at your accusation, taking full offence. “Aren’t you the one who likes it messy? How can I not be messy if half-ass my pull out game?”
You raised your brows in a false sense of surprise. “So you’re telling me that you fake it then?”
“I don’t fake it. I just do it on purpose,” he corrects. You nodded, not believing him. “Oh really?”
“I could always prove it to you,” he presented triumphantly. You smirked. “Okay fine. Let’s fuck. but you can’t pull out and jerk yourself off. Otherwise, it won’t count.”
Haechan smiled and crashed his lips onto yours, pushing your seat back so that he could hover on top of you. He spread your legs apart, settling in between them and slipped his hand under your shirt, drawing small circles into your side. You tugged at his shirt, urging him to take it off. He was quick to do so, throwing the material in the back seat. Haechan peeled your shorts down your legs, bringing his hands to your clothed clit. You bucked your hips against his fingers, gasping into his mouth. Haechan took this as a chance to let his tongue run over yours. He squeezed your breast over your bra and pushed the flimsy fabric up to your neck. You fumbled with his pants, managing to grab his partially hardened cock. Haechan hummed and pushed his pants down all the way, letting his member spring free. You licked your lips in anticipation, playing with his tip. Haechan pushed your panties to the side and rubbed his tip along your plump folds. You held onto his arms when he finally pushed into you. He set a steady pace, rocking his hips into you comfortably. Your head fell back against the cool leather of the seat, legs spreading wider for him to go deeper. With one hand on your shoulder and the other on your thigh, Haechan kept his eyes glued to your cunt. He bit his lip, seething at how warm and tight your walls were. You began rubbing your clit, impatient to reach your climax. Haechan didn’t mind. In fact, he fucked you faster, pulling your body down the seat and throwing your legs over his shoulder. He held onto the headrest to maintain his momentum. Loud moans left your gaping mouth. The usually talkative Haechan said nothing, concentrating solely on his approaching high. You were the first to cum, walls clenching around his member. Haechan groaned as he felt your arousal gush down your walls, slicking up his cock. Gripping your thighs, he started rutting himself into you, ignoring your cries when the sensitivity started to settle into. Keeping your condition in mind, he hissed and kept going, right until he was about to nut.
An amused chuckle left you as he pulled out and haphazardly emptied himself over your pussy. You wrapped your fingers around him and stroked his length, milking him dry of every last drop.
“Does that count,” he asked, pulling his pants back up. He handed you a tissue to clean yourself up. “It barely makes the cut,” you replied, straightening yourself up again. Haechan snickered. “Just admit that you like it messy and we both win.”
~
About an hour into your wait for the tow truck, another disaster took place. The car’s battery gave out, leaving you to slow bake in the intense heat. Haechan had it easier, leisurely, splaying in his seat with his shirt off. You figured you could do the same, but there was no way of knowing when the towers would show up. Not wanting to waste the little amount of cool air in the car, Haechan forbade you from cracking the windows open. All you could do was sit and fan your face with the car’s insurance papers.
Almost a century later, a loud horn sounded from behind you on the road, startling you both. With a glance in the rearview mirror, you realised it was the towing people. Haechan scrambled to pull his shirt on and got out of the car, wincing as he shielded his eyes from the sun.
You watched Haechan talk to them from the window. He turned to you, motioning you to sit tight. After a while, They pulled your car up into the back of their truck and offered to take you back to their garage from where you both could book a cab and return to the city.
Since there was no space up front, they let you sit in your car, popping the windows open so that you wouldn’t die of suffocation. When the truck began moving, you were finally able to let out a breath of relief. It was still considerably hot out. But the sharp wind that hit your face was incredibly refreshing. Haechan’s once sweat matted hair was now fluffy and dry. Both of you were at ease, feeling grateful to have escaped that dreaded off-road where not a single soul was present. It was nice to be around life again.
It took some time but you eventually reached the garage in one piece. After collecting all your essentials from the car, you both headed out to a small diner nearby to recharge yourselves with some food and beverages. It was quiet between you, for the most part, both of you were equally exhausted from all the long and tedious travelling. It was safe to say that you’d lived out enough of your road trip fantasies for now.
After paying for your food, Haechan took out his phone, ready to book a cab. That’s the exact moment he realised that his phone was out of battery. A look of horror struck on his face. You cursed in frustration and pulled out your own phone. Luckily, it still had some charge, though barely surviving. Much to your dismay, however, you didn’t have a cab booking app and you knew downloading one would take ages. Still, you had to try.
As you had assumed, your phone ended up dying during your wait. Haechan was going to cry. Knowing that you both would be in the car for the majority of your trip, neither of you had brought your chargers. There was one back in the car but you couldn’t use it. Haechan was on the verge of tears. He had no idea what to do and neither did you.
“Should we just hitchhike?” Haechan stared at you blankly and shrugged. “Do we have any other choice?” You traced the rim of your cup, letting out a tired sigh. “Maybe we can spend the night at some motel and wait for our car to get fixed. We’ll have to come back to pick it up anyway so why not just stay till it’s ready?”
Haechan couldn’t argue with that. A waitress informed you of a cheap motel around the block. You both set out on foot, reaching it in no time. The building wasn’t too impressive. But it wasn’t like either of you were expecting much out of it anyways. You just wanted to lay on a soft bed and take a shower. You couldn’t stand how sticky and dewy your skin had gotten.
After booking a room, you both burst in through the door and headed straight for the bathroom. “Are we going in together,” Haechan asked when he saw you peeling your shirt off? You slipped behind the shower curtain and turned on the water without answering him. He got the memo and mimicked your actions before joining you in the small space. Leaning against his chest, you closed your eyes, letting the cool water cascade down your body. Haechan wrapped his arms around your waist, resting his chin on your shoulder.
“I can’t believe this is what our trip led to,” you spoke, snickering to yourself. Haechan scoffed. “At least we’ll never forget it.” You turned around, throwing your arms around his neck. “Never in a million years.” Haechan smiled at you, leaning forward to press a quick kiss on your lips. Pulling him closer, you kept his lips on yours a bit longer, not wanting it to end just quite yet. Haechan stumbled back towards the wall, smirking as things started to escalate. You could feel his member beginning to harden up. Haechan let out a choked moan when you took a hold of his length, pumping it with vigour. His fingers found your clit, rubbing quick circles into it. “Fuck, turn around,” Haechan voiced, switching places with you. He pulled your hips back, bringing his tip to your entrance. Pressing your face to the cool bathroom wall, you moaned as he stretched you out with his cock. Haechan gradually brought himself to a steady pace, grunting in delight. Your head fell back, breathy moans filling the expanse of the small bathroom. This was the perfect way to destress after your terrible day.
~
You guys had quite a lot of fun in that motel room. Two times in the shower and once on the bed. Now, you two laid next to each other, naked and completely drained. Haechan giggled at the ticklish sensation of your fingers drawing shapes on his chest. You were cuddled up into his side, leg thrown over his lap underneath the covers. Both of you were seconds away from falling asleep.
“You know what y/n,” Haechan whispered, not wanting to disturb the peaceful ambience of the room. You hummed, looking up at him. “I think we should go trekking.” You couldn’t help but laugh at his ridiculous idea. “After today I don’t think we should ever leave the house unsupervised,” you retorted. Haechan shook his head. “Just think about it. We get lost in the mountains and get a chance to see life through Tarzan’s eyes.” He sounded fascinated by the thought. You rolled your eyes. “Shut up and go to sleep. You’re going crazy.” Haechan groaned. “Yeah, you’re right. Let’s sleep.”
He turned on his side, facing you. Snuggling deeper into him, you wrapped your arm around his hip, sighing into his neck while closing your eyes. His gentle and calm breaths were like a silent lullaby, helping you drift off. Just before you blanked out, Haechan gasped. “What is it now,” you asked, ready to kick him if he said something stupid? “I think I left our keys at home.”

word count: 5.17k
warnings: swearing, mentions of alcohol, fluff, angst, ward cameron.
author’s note: i’ve had this idea for a while and it was originally going to be a reader, but i have a lot of ideas for this oc and rafe that may or may not be a coherent story. i don’t know, we’ll see where it goes. this is an au where there isn’t any treasure hunt but like rafe still does coke and dropped out of college and sarah and john b end up dating. no season 2 spoilers! Also, the house they use in the show for Tanneyhill (it’s real name is Lowndes Grove) is actually so beautiful omg you can rent it for weddings!
BJ Bentley was in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s truck on her way to his house for the first time. Though she’d been in a relationship with Rafe Cameron for the past few months, she understood the reservation he had to take her to meet his father. The dark tattoos all along her sun kissed skin and the style of her clothes definitely scared every one of her partner’s parents. It was especially worse when their parents were hard on them, and they tried everything to live up to their expectations. There were times when someone she was interested in brought her home just to scare their parents when they weren’t interested in her as well. It wasn’t like that with Rafe. For one, he was completely freaking out in the driver’s seat next to her as he drove to his house. And two, he told her from the beginning that he had to be in love with her to bring her home to Ward Cameron.
Well, he was in love with her. And she loved him, too. That’s why she was completely calm in the passenger seat as she waited patiently to pull up to the historic house. Rafe’s fingers tapped against the steering wheel as he was hyper aware of the world around him. Quick hits on the brake and too sharp of turns were a clear indication of his nervousness. BJ reached across the center console to take hold of his right hand. He gave it up to her with little hesitation, and she intertwined their fingers while bringing the back of his hand to her lips. The soft kiss released a bit of tension in his shoulders.
“We don’t have to do this today,” she said against his hand. He immediately shook his head at the idea.
He said, “No, I already told him you were coming today. He’s got Rose making her special meatloaf for the occasion.”
BJ placed their hands down on the console and smiled.
“I love meatloaf.”
He nodded, his mind still somewhere else, and stated, “I know. I told her.”
Rafe stopped the truck at a stop sign. With no one behind them, BJ reached her free hand up to his cheek and turned his head towards her, forcing him to meet her eyes. She smiled softly when he leaned into the palm of her hand.
“It’s going to be okay. I promise. I’ve dealt with plenty of parental disappointment. He might be a little harder on you, but he’ll let it go eventually.”
He smiled and kissed the palm of her hand before turning back to the road. As he pulled forward from the stop sign, she placed her outreached hand on his forearm to run her fingers up and down the prominent vein.
He said, “That’s not what I’m worried about.”
BJ’s hand stilled at his words, and she stared at the side of his face as she tried to think of any other reason he’d be so nervous.
“I don’t want him to scare you off,” he added as he avoided meeting her eye.
Her lip jutted out as she cooed, “Aw, Honey Bunch,” his eyes rolled and lip turned up at the pet name, “you don’t have to worry about him scaring me off. You’ve had plenty of chances to do that.”
Rafe laughed mockingly and reached over to squeeze her thigh. She laughed loudly as she tried to pull his hand off of her. When she managed to wrench his hand away from her, she reached over and poked his side which only resulted in his hand gripping her thigh again.
“Rafe Cameron,” she said in a firm tone, making him laugh. “If you don’t stop, I will knock you the fuck out.”
He didn’t stop. It took him almost side swiping someone’s car for him to let go of her and return his hand to the steering wheel.
“That’s what I thought,” BJ quipped but screeched and lifted her leg away from him as he pretended to reach for her thigh again.
The rest of the ride was silent aside from the music playing from the radio. Eventually, the sound of the turn signal interrupted the melodies of the song as they waited for the car in the other lane to pass to turn left into Tanneyhill. Trees blocked the view of the house from the gate, but she could see peaks of a white house with many windows. As they drove up the driveway and passed the trees, she could see the beautiful house in it’s full glory. The house itself was beautiful on it’s own, but the surrounding view made it stunning. She could see the expanse of the water over to the left while an expansive yard of trees veered to the right.
“Home sweet home,” Rafe muttered as he pulled into a parking spot next to someone’s car. He turned the engine off and unbuckled his seat belt but didn’t make a move to get out. BJ unbuckled her own seat belt and waited. She watched as he took a couple of deep breaths before turning to meet her eye. Her lips turned up in an encouraging smile. She leaned forward over the console enticing him to do the same. Their lips met in a soft peck and met a few times more before pulling away for good.
The couple got out of the truck at the same time and met at the back. BJ let Rafe stair up at the house before reaching her hand out for him to hold. He huffed a heavy sigh before taking her hand in his. On their way to the front door, BJ stopped walking. If he didn’t have her hand in his, he probably would have kept going. He stopped, their hands extended, and watched her eyes widen.
“What? What’s wrong?”
Her eyes moved from the house to him, and she said, “I’m going to meet Wheezie!”
Rafe released a relieved sigh as he let his head fall back with his eyes closed. The hat on his head nearly fell off as it’s bill hit the back of his neck. BJ laughed as she stepped closer to her.
“Don’t do that to me,” Rafe mumbled as he let her pull him along. When they got closer to his front door, he took the lead. He led her past the front room and into the main part of the house. They took a few turns before reaching a decent sized kitchen. As an old house meant to be preserved, it lacked the open floor plan most modern day houses choose to do. While some rooms were spacious, it felt very choppy as they moved through the house. Even the kitchen was cut off from the dining area. The only person in the kitchen was a blonde woman who was definitely not Sarah Cameron or Wheezie.
“Oh, hello!” The woman greeted as she worked on cleaning off the counters. She stopped at the sight of them and tossed the washcloth into the sink. Her eyes widened once she got a better look at the girl standing next to Rafe, but BJ took it in stride as she let go of Rafe’s hand to go shake hers.
Rafe spoke up from behind BJ, “Rose, this is BJ. BJ, this is my stepmom, Rose.”
“It’s really nice to meet you, Rose. I heard you’re making meatloaf! It already smells amazing,” BJ stated as she shook the woman’s hand. She watched Rose take in the tattoos on the back of her hand and the chain hanging on one side of her skirt, but she pretended not to notice as Rose fixed a genuine smile on her face.
“It’s nice to meet you, too! Rafe mentioned meatloaf was your favorite, so Ward asked me to make my special recipe.”
“Is there anything Rafe and I can do to help?” BJ offered. Rafe started to speak from behind her, but Rose beat him to it.
“Actually, the table still needs to be set, if you don’t mind?”
BJ shook her head and said, “Not at all.” She turned around to Rafe. “You know how to set the table, right?”
Rafe huffed and nodded his head. He turned to the left and led her into the dining room where a long, rectangular table that seats eight people took up one side of the room and a smaller, circular table that seats four people took up the other. He stepped over to the china cabinet and opened both of the doors.
“I can start with the glasses while you get the plates?” Rafe suggested as he looked at her. She nodded and walked over to him. He pointed at a specific set of plates before grabbing the glasses on the higher shelf. A place mat was already placed in front of each seat that was to be used. BJ started on one side as Rafe started on the other. They met at the head of the table, and BJ stared up at Rafe as he refused to move out of the way.
She wasn’t much shorter than him normally, but she was almost nose to nose to him with her boots on. The amused smile on his lips and the quirk of his eyebrow tempted her to do something about him being in her way. With a playful tint in the corner of her eye, she stood on the tips of her toes to press a kiss to his lips. His hand found her hip as their kiss lasted longer than necessary. When she pulled away and fell back flat on her feet, Rafe hummed and nodded his head. He patted her hip and stepped out of her way.
“You may pass,” he said, making BJ laugh. The rest of her task went without fail before the two of them placed the silverware out: BJ was in charge of the spoons while Rafe put out the forks and knives. The sound of a man’s voice interrupted the peaceful silence that laid over the air.
“Alright, I got the ice and another bottle just in case. I saw Rafe’s truck outside. Have you already met her?” The man stated as the couple saw him approach the island that Rose was standing next to.
Rose nodded, walked towards her husband, and said, “Yes, I did. They’re setting the table now.”
Ward tried to turn to look at where they were standing, but Rose grabbed the front of his blazer and pretended to fix it while she whispered to him. BJ puffed out a silent laugh as she looked at Rafe.
She whispered, “Very subtle.”
Rafe only had the energy to chuckle once as he watched the two in the kitchen. BJ studied the couple and watched Ward’s facial expressions to gauge his reaction. She noticed the exact moment Rose told him about her...appearance. His head tilted towards his wife in a quick motion to look in her eyes. Rose scolded him swiftly, and Ward fixed his face into a stoic expression. BJ could feel her boyfriend tense from beside her as she watched Ward look to the ground and nod at whatever his wife said.
BJ took the lead, grabbed Rafe’s hand, and pulled him into the kitchen. Rafe tugged on her hand to keep her from intruding on his dad and stepmom’s conversation, but BJ went through this too many times to know it was easier to rip the bandage off right away.
“Hi, you must be Ward! I’m BJ Bentley,” she introduced herself, extending her hand once again. Though he was warned, Rafe’s father appeared to still be surprised at the sight of her. He took it in stride regardless. His eyebrows shot up in delight and a charming smile crossed his face as he reached his own hand out.
Ward greeted, “Ah, nice to meet you, BJ. I have to say I was surprised to hear Rafe had a girlfriend, let alone that he was bringing her home to meet us.”
“Dad,” Rafe said as Rose called her husband’s name in warning.
“Honestly, I was surprised, too,” BJ confessed. “Didn’t think Rafe was the girlfriend type.”
The timer on the oven went off to interrupt the tense conversation. Rose hurried around the island to pull the door open. She used a cooking thermometer to check the temperature inside the meatloaf.
“It’s done. Rafe, can you go upstairs to get your sisters?” Rose asked.
Rafe made sure BJ was okay before reluctantly heading out of the kitchen to the stairs she’d seen on the way inside. She watched him until he disappeared out of the room and turned back to his parents. The brunette tucked her hair behind her ear as she caught Ward staring at the tattoos on her thighs sticking out under her skirt with a disapproving purse of his lips. She turned to Rose, the safer of the two, and offered her help.
“I can take the potatoes to the table if you’d like,” BJ offered as Rose sliced into the meatloaf and placed it onto a large plate. The potatoes were on a similar plate cut into chunks and seasoned so well that BJ’s stomach grumbled at the smell.
Rose smiled and said, “That would be great. Thank you.”
BJ returned the smile and grabbed the plate. Once she reached the table, she placed the potatoes in the center with enough room for the meatloaf. Ward followed her into the room and motioned to the side of the table with only two seats set.
“Rafe sits on this side next to me. Feel free to sit next to him,” Ward said. BJ nodded and stepped around Ward; she noticed then they were about the same height. Since Ward hadn’t pulled his chair out, BJ thought it best to wait to be seated. Her mouth didn’t agree to the plan.
“Your home is very beautiful. It has a lot of history behind it, right?” She inquired as Rose brought in the meatloaf before returning to the kitchen, probably for the drinks.
Ward’s head tilted in interest as he answered, “That’s right. People don’t usually know that.”
“I did a paper on Denmark Tanney in college. As you must know, he was the only person to survive the wreck of the Royal Merchant.”
A light lit up behind Ward’s eyes at the mention of the Royal Merchant. She mentioned offhandedly one day while hanging out with Rafe that she did a paper on the man who built his house after he told her he lived in Tanneyhill. He told her how much his dad loved the house and its history, so she knew she could use that to get on Ward’s good side. She wasn’t worried about whether the Cameron’s liked her, especially not Ward, but she wanted there to be mutual respect between them. From what Rafe has said about his father, she knew she would never like him. But as Rafe’s father, she had a level of respect for him that she wanted to be returned. No matter how the man treated him, Rafe loved Ward and looked up to him. She had to respect that.
“Of course,” Ward replied, his words more genuine than the other times he’s spoken. “It’s what drew me to the house in the first place. Tell me did your research take you to the information about the gold he was able to get off of the Royal Merchant?”
Rose brought in a pitcher of iced tea as well as a cup of scotch on the rocks for Ward. She started to pour a glass of tea for herself as she listened to their conversation.
“Yes, and no one has ever been able to find it. He had letters to his son that a lot of people have picked apart trying to find out where he hid it, but no one’s figured it out.”
“Ugh, dad, please tell me you haven’t bored BJ with your stories about the Royal Merchant,” Sarah Cameron stated as she came into the kitchen. She sent BJ a smile and a wink as she walked to her seat, leaving the middle one between her and Rose empty. Rafe followed in shortly after.
Ward laughed as he shook his head. “Of course not, Sarah. BJ brought it up.”
Sarah’s eyes widened in surprise and put her hands up in surrender. Rafe came to stand next to his girlfriend. Ward and Rose looked at him expectantly.
“Wheezie’s on her way down,” he stated before reaching over to pull out BJ’s seat. She smiled at the gesture as she stepped out of the way.
“Wow, Rafe has manners?” Sarah asked, sarcasm dripping from her words as she sat down. Rafe glared at his sister as BJ stepped in front of the seat. He pushed in her seat as she sat down. She mumbled her gratitude as he sat down next to her. Rose and Ward sat down after the kids, and Rafe took it upon himself to pour himself a glass of iced tea. He offered the pitcher to BJ, and she took it graciously.
The sound of loud steps interrupted the short silence, and a young, teenage girl wearing a bright pink tutu and a sequined, long sleeve shirt. BJ’s eyes widened in surprise, and she turned to Rafe as she pressed her lips together to contain her laugh. Rafe placed his elbow on the table and covered his mouth to hide his smile. From what Rafe told her about his youngest sister, the tutu was out of character for her.
Sarah gasped and said, “Love the tutu, Wheeze.”
“Wheezie, what are you wearing?” Rose asked as the girl sat down next to her. BJ turned back to watch the scene unfold in front of her. Wheezie smiled at her before turning to her stepmom.
Wheezie said with a shrug, “Wanted to try something new.”
“Wheezie, we have a guest. Go upstairs and change,” Ward demanded as he tilted his head back to stare at her down his nose.
“I think Wheezie has a right to dress however she wants,” Rafe said, finally lowering his hand away from his face.
Sarah added, “Yeah, dad, we should let her express herself.”
BJ could see what her boyfriend and his sisters were doing. Wheezie was dressed in an out-of-character outfit to make her brother’s girlfriend feel comfortable wearing the clothes that the older generation deemed unacceptable. Rafe and Sarah were helping coax their parents into understanding why she wore the clothes she did. It warmed her heart to see it. Wheezie didn’t know who she was, they’d never met before, but she was doing this because she loved her brother. Sarah and BJ had known of each other before she started dating Rafe because they went to the same parties.
“Also,” BJ spoke up, “I really don’t mind. I think you rock the tutu, Wheezie, and those sequins really bring out your eyes.”
“Thank you, BJ,” Wheezie said before she turned to her father expectantly. Everyone turned to him to see his reaction. Ward Cameron sighed as he stared at his younger daughter.
“Fine.”
***
“So, BJ, what are you studying in college?” Ward asked as he sipped on his second glass of scotch. The men finished their plates as well as Sarah while the rest of them were still working on finishing their potatoes and little bit of meatloaf. BJ complimented Rose on her recipe after the first bite once she tasted the burst of flavor on her tongue. She talked to Wheezie about a new movie that was coming out. Apparently it was a part of a series that the young girl really liked, so she told BJ the synopsis of the first movie and invited her to come over to watch the first two movies together. Most of dinner was Rose and Ward alternating asking BJ questions about herself or Sarah telling everyone what she’d been up to for the day and what she was planning to do in the next couple.
BJ took her time swallowing the potato she’d been chewing and answered, “Actually, I finished college last year.”
Ward and Rose’s attention perked at the sound of that.
Rose asked, “I thought you said you were the same age as Rafe?”
“She is,” Rafe answered. “She finished her Bachelor’s degree in business, right?”
He looked to her for confirmation. She nodded.
“I started taking a lot of my general education credits my junior year of high school and took more business centered classes in the summer,” BJ said, turning to Ward and Rose. “By the time I graduated high school, I was a junior in college.”
Ward appeared to be impressed with what he was hearing and asked, “So, are you working now or have you decided to do something else?”
“I am. I work with my mother in her real estate investment business. I’ve always been around the office, even interned there the summer after high school graduation, and that’s how I knew I wanted to have a career in business.”
“I have to admit that’s pretty impressive,” Ward said and stared at his son. “I wish Rafe had as much drive as you do.”
BJ looked to Rafe to see him stare into the bottom of his glass that only had chunks of ice at the bottom. She could tell by the pout of his lips and his slouched shoulders that the comment hit a little too hard. Without allowing the others to notice, she reached under the table to place her hand over his on his lap.
“Rafe has plenty of drive,” BJ defended. “He’s just got to figure out where he wants to put that energy. Calculated energy is better than wasted energy.”
Ward only hummed in response. She finished her plate without any interruption. Rafe and Sarah grabbed everyone’s empty dishes. BJ helped Rafe stack all of the plates before Ward asked Wheezie to show their guest around the house.
“Yeah, BJ, I’ll show you Rafe’s room first since you’ll probably spend a lot of time there,” Wheezie said as she pushed her chair out to stand up.
Rafe stepped back into the room and scolded her, “Wheeze. Shut. Up.”
BJ laughed and stood up to follow after Wheezie. She patted Rafe’s shoulder as she passed him. Wheezie talked the entire time as she showed the older girl every room in the house. Most of the stories included embarrassing stories about Rafe.
“The rug right here?” Wheezie pointed out as they stood in the hall leading to the stair and outside of Rafe’s room. “Rafe tripped over it running out of his room and almost busted his chin going down the stairs. Luckily he stopped at the turn or he would’ve broken his arm.”
BJ shook her head and asked, “When was this?”
“Last week.”
The two giggled at the news, and Wheezie took her up another set of stairs. BJ followed her into a room that was clearly hers. It was a typical young teenager room with a few posters and brighter, mismatched colors.
“The tour is now over, please don’t forget to tip your guide and remember to visit again,” Wheezie said in a highly comical, animated voice. She worked on taking off the tutu as BJ looked around the room. It wasn’t a big room, but it was large enough to hold everything her heart desired.
“Is she your favorite artist?” BJ asked, pointing to a small poster of Taylor Swift next to some, what BJ could assume were, lyrics.
“Of course, she’s a lyrical genius,” Wheezie said, and BJ could tell how much the girl looked up to the artist by her voice. “Who’s your favorite artist?”
A sheepish smile was brought to her lips and turned to Wheezie. The youngest Cameron was sitting on her bed against her pillows, and BJ went to sit on the edge near her.
BJ said, “So, this may come as a shock, but I love Whitney Houston.”
Wheezie’s head tilted forward in surprise as her eyes widened. BJ laughed. The former girl looked down at BJ’s clothes and tattoos before looking back up to her with narrowed eyes.
“There’s no way. You definitely listen to classic rock like Nirvana,” Wheezie said.
“Okay, Nirvana is definitely not classic rock. Whoever told you that lied to you. And yes, despite my looks, Whitney Houston just hits the spot.”
Wheezie laughed and said, “I can’t wait to tell Rafe.”
“Hah,” BJ mocked and hit the girl lightly on the leg, “he already knows.” She hopped off the bed and headed for the door. “I’m going to go find him. I just take the stairs all the way down right?”
The only response she received was a nod before leaving the room. BJ could hear slightly raised voices drifting up the stairs as she started down them. She could hear Rafe’s voice but couldn’t make out any of his words.
Then, clear as day, she heard Ward’s voice, “I don’t care, Rafe! Think about what people will say when they see you with her. What they will say about our family.”
“You didn’t say this to Sarah when she brought John B home,” Rafe countered.
“John B doesn’t dress like she does and doesn’t have tattoos up and down his arms! I don’t care if you love her, you-”
Suddenly, it was quiet as BJ stepped on a particularly creaky stair. Not that she was quiet on her way down, but they didn’t hear her over their yelling. As she came down, she saw Rafe, Ward, and Rose through the doorway into the kitchen standing in awkward silence as they waited for her.
“Please, don’t stop on my account,” BJ said as she walked towards the three of them.
Rafe started to talk, “BJ, I’m sorry-”
BJ held up a hand to stop him.
“You don’t have to apologise, Rafe. It’s not the first time I’ve walked in on an awkward conversation with my boyfriend’s parents. I just hoped your father had enough respect to talk to me about it.”
She smiled a sickeningly sweet smile as she met Ward’s eyes. Rafe said her name and offered for them to leave.
“And I wish my son had enough respect not to bring you home,” Ward said as he took a long drink of his scotch.
BJ’s smile didn’t falter at his words as Rose sharply said his name.
“You know, Ward, a person can always change their clothes,” BJ informed the older man and motioned to her own clothes. “Hell, on a normal day, I don’t typically wear this. I only wore it now so you could see the ‘worst’ of it and learn to get over it. I understand your reservations on tattoos. It’s not everyone’s preference. I, for one,” BJ stepped over to Rafe and motioned to his bare arm, “love the blank canvas that is your son.” Rafe muttered an “oh, my god” at her words. “But you should never judge someone’s character for what they decide to do with their bodies. It’s their actions you have to pay attention to.
“Your actions, specifically, have told me that you are a very insecure man who tries to keep the image of his perfect family intact to hide the fact that he feels like an imposter in the life he’s created for himself.” Ward stood up straighter and set his glass down forcefully. Rose put her hand on his chest to stop him from taking a step towards BJ. “The only reason I’m saying this to you is because, although I do not like you one bit, I have respect for you. I know who you are, Ward Cameron. Started on the other side of Outer Banks and, through hard work and sacrifice, you made it to Figure Eight. You raised a beautiful family despite hardly being there for them emotionally. Anyone can respect someone who has managed to do that for themselves.”
Ward scoffed and interrupted BJ’s tangent, “I let you into my home, and you decide to speak to me like this in the name of respect? My actions have told you all of this about my character? Through one dinner?”
BJ shrugged and simply said, “I minored in psychology. And I’m sorry if you find what I’ve said to be disrespectful. I found you talking about me without me present to be disrespectful. I love your son whether you like me or not and as long as he still feels the same way, we’ll have to treat each other with mutual respect.”
Rafe’s hand slipped into hers. Through their interlaced fingers BJ felt his grip tighten as he stood up to his father. With her other hand, she reached out for a handshake. Ward stared down at her hand for a moment before looking at Rafe. Another squeeze on her hand. Ward and BJ locked eyes. He sighed and reached out his hand. A firm handshake, and the two were on their way with Rafe saying over his shoulder he might be back later.
Her boyfriend practically dragged her out of the house and to his truck. The sun was already set, so the lights around the house were the only thing to light their way to Rafe’s truck. The overhead lights inside turned on and off as they got in. The dash light lit up Rafe’s features as he turned the ignition over to start the engine. BJ watched as he sighed heavily and fell back against his seat, and she reached over to grab his hand again.
“I almost shit myself when you called him insecure,” Rafe confessed, making her laugh out loud. “I thought he was going to kill us both.”
BJ leaned over the console and said, “But he didn’t.”
He opened his eyes and turned his head without lifting it to look at her. Pieces of his hair fell onto his forehead, and she smiled at him as she studied his face. A sweat had broken out on his face and neck, but it was slowly drying in the cool air of the truck’s air conditioning.
“No, he didn’t.” BJ watched his soft lips as he spoke.
“Now, the worst is over.”
He nodded. “It is.”
BJ’s free hand reached up to the back of Rafe’s head and pulled his face towards hers. Rafe didn’t put up any fight as he leaned into the kiss. She pulled away with a sigh, and the boy moved so he could comfortably lean against the console as she played with the hairs at the back of his head.
“Wheezie’s cool,” BJ admitted. “She told me a lot of embarrassing stories about you.” Rafe rolled his eyes. “Something about you and a rug followed by a small tumble down the stairs.”
Rafe shook his head and said, “I have just as many embarrassing stories of her.”
BJ smiled.
“I can’t wait to hear them.”

"Are we on a date right now?" / "I think I'm in love with you."
Saturday signals the best day in Kara's book for one simple reason: the farmers market. It's the perfect place to buy fresh produce directly from the grower at a lower price than those pesky retailers. Not to mention, it's fresher and it's a great way to support local communities.
Kara enjoys it most in the early morning between 8 and 9 when the California heat hasn't bombarded its citizens yet. One of her favorite memories of going to the market was when she first arrived on earth, and Eliza and Alex took her to the one in Midvale. Eliza bought her the sweetest miniature doughnuts which practically melted in her mouth. She's been a huge (understatement of the year) fan ever since.
The farmers market is located 20 blocks from her apartment, just a short jaunt or flight for the hero.
Today she decides to walk and enjoy the nice cool breeze, and the warm sun spilling on her face. She can already hear the acoustics of a folk band covering a Fleetwood Mac song at the end of main street. The leaves are starting to change, indicating the beginning of fall, and the ones already on the ground crunch beneath her feet.
Her reusable cloth bag with the words, "Okey Dokey Artichokey" and a cartoon artichoke with a smiley face and tiny stick arms, is slung over her shoulder. Lena had given it to her as a gag gift, but Kara uses it the most out of all her bags. Any gift from Lena is special and she will always treasure it.
As she rounds the corner to the market, she sneaks another look at her list to remind herself what she needs, when she bumps into someone. Hard. Fortunately, Kara manages to grab the other person's arm before they fall.
"Oh my gosh," Kara cringes. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't watching where I was—" she interrupts herself when she sees, "Lena?"
"Hey there, slick," Lena laughs and nudges the hand latched on her arm to tangle with her fingers.
Kara responds by swinging their arms back and forth, like what friends do when they haven't seen each other in months. But Kara and Lena just saw each other yesterday. This is normal, right? Kara thinks. The fluttering in my chest is completely common whenever I see my friends....Right?
"Wh-what are you doing here?" Kara speaks before her brain can catch up with her.
Lena's face lights up with a sly grin. "Can't a woman go to the market every once in a while?"
"N-no no, of course you can," Kara laughs awkwardly, "I meant, gosh I'm not sure...I guess I just didn't expect to see you here. You live all the way on the other side of town."
"Relax, love," she chuckles and squeezes her hand and releases it, Kara immediately missing the warmth. "I'm teasing you. But to answer your question, I'm in desperate need of fresh kale, and I heard this particular stand has the best in the city."
Kara feigns gagging and Lena playfully shoves her shoulder. “I still don’t understand how you can eat that stuff.”
“Who knew the green stuff that incapacitates you was kale.”
“More like your eyes,” Kara mumbles.
“What was that?”
Kara’s eyes widen. “N-nothing,” she rubs the back of her neck. “Um, so….do you care if I join you? Wandering aimlessly through the market checking out food stands with my best friend sounds like the perfect way to spend my Saturday morning.”
“I’d love nothing more,” Lena replies, smiling brightly.
“Oooh, look! A food truck!” Kara points.
Lena laughs at her zeal. “Let’s see what they have.”
Kara reaches for her hand and twines their fingers together before dragging her toward the truck. Lena’s stomach swoops at the action, but she calms herself down enough so Kara doesn’t notice her rapid heartbeat. Not that she would, considering food is the best distraction when it comes to the blonde.
Little does Lena know that nothing can distract Kara from Lena, especially considering 98% of the time Kara is listening to the constant thumps and quivers of Lena’s heart, but Kara doesn’t say anything.
Kara looks up at the man in the truck and politely rattles off her order, then looks at Lena and asks, “What do you want?”
“Um,” Lena quickly glances at the menu and says, “I’ll have the Avo Smash, please.” She moves to hand the man cash, but Kara stops her and insists she'll pay for it. "My treat."
Once they give their order they move to the side and wait until their names are called.
When they get their food they move to a shady spot on the sidewalk and admire how delicious it looks.
“What’s that?” Kara asks.
“Oh, it’s a piece of toast with smashed avocado, egg, and tomato,” Lena replies, noticing how Kara turns up her nose. Lena rolls her eyes and gestures at her hands, “What’d you get?”
"Uh, only the most scrumptious and melt in your mouth-watering food you can get here," she replies, eyebrows pinched, incredulously. Lena raises her eyebrows in a get-on-with-it kind of way. "French toast bites," Kara finishes, exasperated at Lena's lack of enthusiasm.
"Sweet food for a sweet girl."
Kara's cheeks grow a slight pink. Instead of replying, she dips a piece of her toast in the syrup, and shoves the whole thing in her mouth. Lena simply hums and takes a bit of her own food. Kara smiles like a chipmunk with cheeks full of goodies.
When Lena's finished with her slice of hipster toast, as Kara calls it, a small body runs into her legs from behind. She looks down and finds a small boy with sandy blonde hair and big, blue eyes looking up at her with a toothy grin.
"Hi, there," she smiles at him.
"Henry!" a woman in a flowy maxi dress and brown sandals comes running toward them. She picks him up and gives him a stern look. "I told you not to run off like that!" The woman adjusts him on her hip and shyly realizes she has an audience. "I'm so sorry! He gets too excited about their french toast."
"Oh, no worries," Lena reassures her. She carefully grabs Kara's elbow and says, "This one does too."
Kara acts hurt by placing a hand over her heart. "Well, can you blame me? They're delicious! Aren't they?" she smiles at the boy and waves. He giggles and hides his face in his mother's neck. "Someone's a little shy, huh?"
"He is, isn't he?" the mom kisses his cheek. "I think he has a little crush on you."
"Who, me?" Kara laughs. "No, I think he has eyes for Lena. As most people do." She steps forward and tickles his stomach so he looks at her. Kara holds out her hand for a high five and whispers, "Good choice." He gratefully slaps her hand.
When Kara steps back, Lena is blushing, but rather than call her out on it she ignores it out of respect. Kara smiles at her and Lena smiles back, but then she's suddenly laughing through her nose.
"Darling, you have a little," she gestures at her own face.
"What? I have something on my face?" Kara touches her cheek, but completely misses.
"Here," Lena's fingers tenderly touch the side of her jaw while her thumb swipes her lip. Lena's completely focused on what she's doing, but Kara only has eyes for Lena.
Lena pulls back her hand, thumb now sticky with syrup. Instead of wiping it on the napkin Kara knows Lena has in her bag, she sticks it between her lips and licks it clean.
Kara completely stops breathing.
"How long have you two been together?" a voice snaps her out of her reverie.
Kara gapes at her with wide eyes and stutters, "Um...we, we're uh, just friends."
"Oh," the woman almost looks upset. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to presume. Well, I'll let you get back to your morning." She smiles at them and walks away, leaving a flabbergasted Kara and quiet Lena.
They don't say anything and choose to ignore it while they continue down the street.
"Lena, you have to try this," Kara doesn't give her a chance to respond before shoving a spoonful of gelato in Lena's mouth.
Lena gasps and nearly chokes on the ice cold dessert enveloping her tastebuds. She hisses and nods, as she lifts her hand to hastily catch the dribbles of melted chocolate trickling down her chin. Kara winces, "I'm so sorry!"
"No," Lena shakes her head as she swallows, "I just wasn't expecting that."
"Well? How was it?"
"Y'know, I'm not gonna lie...it was pretty fucking delicious."
"Right? Marco really knows his stuff."
"Um," Lena holds her hand out, fingers spread apart to prevent more sticking, and shakes it like she doesn't know what to do.
Kara jumps to action and runs off. She's back in two seconds with a wet wipe and cleans Lena's hand. "Where'd you find that?"
"Don't ask."
"Okay?" Lena laughs breathily. "You're a mystery wrapped inside an enigma, Ms. Danvers."
"I aim to confuse," she jokes.
Lena shakes her head, and eventually says, "Thank you."
"Don't mention it," Kara smiles at her, their eyes locked onto each other. She's finished cleaning her hand, but rather than letting go, her hand stays curled around Lena's, not wanting to ruin the moment.
“Oh Rao, you didn’t,” Kara gasps.
Lena turns around and frowns at her. “What?” Kara gestures to Lena’s bag. Lena looks down and chuckles when she realizes what she’s talking about. “In my defense, I was drunk. You know how my shopping brain acts when I’m drunk; I buy things I don’t need.”
“Hmmm, well maybe your alcohol-addled brain just remembered how funny I thought it was and wanted to impress me,” Kara teases with a twitch of her eyebrow.
“I’m sure that’s exactly what happened,” Lena deadpans. She glanced at the words on her bag again and fondly shakes her head. It reads: Oh Kale Yeah, with a bunch of kale on both sides.
“I think so,” Kara steps closer and smiles.
“Oh, really?” Lena raises her eyebrows.
“Yep,” she ends with an extra pop of the ‘p’ and boops her on the nose.
Lena opens her mouth in surprise, a protest on the tip of her tongue, but a voice interrupts her from in front of them.
“You two are such a lovely couple,” the vendor gushes.
Lena and Kara startle, forgetting they’re standing right in front of a stand selling various vegetables and fruits and jars of honey. Behind the table is an older woman, most likely in her late 70s, with streaks of gray hair, crinkly eyes and facial lines as if she’s smiled her whole life.
“Oh, we’re not—”
“Thank you,” Kara answers, smiling bashfully. She pushes a lock of hair behind her ear and says, “I’ll take one bunch of radishes and one spaghetti squash.”
“Coming right up,” the woman replies.
Kara glances over at Lena and gives her a shy smile, before handing the woman a $10 bill and thanking her. She grabs the veggies and carefully drops them in her bag.
“Thank you two, have a wonderful day.”
“Of course, you too!” Kara places her hand on the small of Lena’s back and guides her forward.
As they make their way to the next stand, Kara laughs, remembering their conversation, “I can’t believe you bought that bag. You’re such a giant dork.”
Lena whips around and eyes Kara curiously. Kara’s hand shifts from her back to loosely rest on her waist. Lena’s eyes are squinting from the bright sun, but Kara can see the speckles of gold in them and thinks she’s never looked more beautiful.
“Are we on a date right now?”
Kara's heart quickens and she opens and closes her mouth a few times, until finally she clears her throat, "Did you want it to be?"
"I thought—”
"Because I do," Kara states. "Want it to be a date. But only if you do, of course. I don't want you to feel pressured or like I forced you to hang out with me," she retracts her hand. "That's the last thing I—”
Lena grabs her hand as she pulls it way, not wanting Kara to close herself off. "Hey, I want this just as much as you do."
"Really?"
Lena lightly presses her thumb into the grooves of Kara's knuckles, and absentmindedly plays with them. She smiles, fully dimpled, and says, "I do. Actually, I uh..." she lowers their connected hands and looks off into the distance, mind seemingly elsewhere.
"What is it?" Kara asks. She playfully shakes their arms back and forth to get her attention.
Lena looks at the ground before completely focusing on Kara and those baby blues she's come to know and love. She takes a deep breath and her voice shakes when she whispers, "I think I'm in love with you..." Lena stumbles and shakes her head, "No—I am in love with you."
Kara inhales sharply and Lena thinks she's made a giant mistake. She starts to turn and do something stupid, like run away, but Kara keeps her hold on her and pulls her forward.
Smiling, Kara slowly inches closer leaving the opportunity for Lena to stop her. When Kara's lips press into hers she welcomes it completely. Kara's hands come up to cup Lena's jaw until she moves one to tangle in her hair.
Kara disconnects from her lips, but stays wrapped up in her, their foreheads touching. "I'm in love with you, too," she whispers against soft lips.
"Good," Lena smiles and kisses her again.

Youngbin:
There's something in his expression, that rolls off his tongue when crass bursts of arousal coarse through him, rushing everywhere in such a natural manner, whether he's found something nice or in joy, his breathy moans and gasp-less breaths are something that awaken arousal, specifically yours. At first his moans may be muffled but as he relaxes, he opens up in the comfort an safety of being with you, you whose presence allows him to lower his tense state. To watch you would be his first thought but as your head bobs and you use your hand in a way that makes his back arch and moans fervently spill, he gets distracted, closing his eyes and losing himself in everything that floats around him. At the end, his thighs may quiver but he's already reaching for you, pulling you into his arms. Onto the bed or tent or the sheet that is rumpled in the back of his truck, he slips into you, groaning, sighing an settling into you. He takes his time to start moving, kissing your cheeks as he does. With every rush of arousal, he lightly bites your shoulder, enough for you to feel his teeth but not enough to hurt you. He caresses your backside the most, squeezing the flesh, especially as he releases. But even when you are on all fours, he makes sure to admire your backside, responding to your moans when he softly hits the flesh or uses your waist as a guide along his cock. He'll describe how feels, ''You're so warm'' or something like that, something that wrecks you and also him to pound into you, picking up the pace. When it's the end of a long day and you want to make love, he'll settle with you under the covers and gently rock himself against you, allowing you to vent or just speak to him then, killing two birds with one stone. This is because he knows that both of you will fall asleep immediately. In line with this, there is also something I want to try: Youngbin with somnophilia kink. This won't be as intense as it's description. Two to three hours after the both of you have fallen asleep, he wakes up, with a small desire already in his mind but it's when he sees you that his desires grow and he wakes you, kissing your tired self out of the haziness of falling back asleep. He feels a little guilty yes, but his thoughts are hay-wired at the moment towards you. If you respond to his desires with your vocal agreement, he won't hesitate to slip into your heat, groaning in relief at the way your core swallows every inch of his cock and soon, he'll pound you into the mattress. ''Binnie'', you ask as he slows down to see your sex taking in his cock, he hums, placing his head in between your breasts or on your chest, listening, ''Go faster please.'', which he chuckles and immediately agrees too. When you release and neither of you are ready to fall back asleep, he tugs you towards the window- one of your favourite places to have sex, it was where he took you when you had sex for the first time. Your chest against the glass, he takes you from behind, quietening himself to hear your moans and whimpers and well-demands. Demands which when came from you, he would easily comply too.
Inseong:
His sounds? Beautiful.
I'll try out this idea as well, since you asked about expression during sex: speaking. Perhaps out of excitement, he'll tell you stuff from the top of his head. Sweet words like, ''You're so beautiful'', ''so pretty, my love'', or whisper to you, ''I'm so excited'' always eliciting a a beautiful laugh from you, ''heh, cutie'', you may reply with this nickname which soothes his ears and tickles his sides with excitement. The first couple of time you have sex, he may be serious, furrowing his brows in concentration on how he is feeling. Accordingly, his sounds may alert you to his status, breathy moans are his main type of vocalisation he would let out, maybe when you suck him off or you have sex. He may even struggle on sounds the first couple of time but it's something that he doesn't dwell on too much after speaking to you about it, ''Don't worry, just let out how you feel about it.'' you said and he did exactly that. His type of sex with you is to make every moment last, each significant piece of memory stamped with your intimacy on it. When he eases himself into the comfort of having sex with you, he'll start to tell you jokes, inciting a bright atmosphere between you two. Armed with his jokes, he'll make you laugh and it'll always be something between you two, leading to or being inside jokes, never something from outside your intimate space. He's also the type to make a haven out of you bedroom space, together, you would attach a cover above your bed and leave the lights on, glazing your naked bodies like sleeping in a tent under the stars, except that it is in your bedroom. The space is safe, free to speak each other about anything and everything. During discussions, he would love to hold you, your waist or lean on his elbows and listen to you, about your day and how you are feeling. It's there that you'll make love to one another, setting each other's minds free from the ongoing troubles and/or enjoying your peace. He's got a nickname for you, maybe something from your name that he'll tell you really sweetly when he starts his conversation with you as he enters you. He'll pay attention to your sounds, ''You feel good baby?'' is his question, filled with his innocence behind them. You nod. ''Fuck- I feel so good baby'' is one of them, he'd whimper it out, followed by his stuttering moans, open and filling your ears. He sounds absolutely beautiful. ''Seongie, let me take care of you'', ''You don't have to baby'' he'll say and if you do continue, he'll go on to then lose himself in the pleasure you give, you curiously peeking eyes at his state that once your eyes connect, he doesn't leave your gaze.
Jaeyoon:
Regal Jaeyoon
He's got it out for you in the most playful way possible. He could've met you just yesterday, last week, two months ago or you've been childhood friends, regardless he sees the beauty in you. He's got many sides to him as does everyone, but unlike being around them, he understands that he can freely show them to you for example, his anger which would not be a suitable look on the king-to-be. When he's angry, he paces around in the study room before thinking that he should ask you for your opinion. So he comes to your room in the palace or picks you up outside your house, sitting side by side on the stone sculptures that are topped with granite to make for a seat or just to hang by when looking outside, swinging his legs. His hand on the cool granite and yours are not far from one another, he wishes to hold your hand and to hold you in his arms but he's not sure, he would want you to be okay with it first. But how does he get there? You can bet that he'll chase you around the market, his heart beating extra fast when he catches you. Having just recently figured out his feelings for you, he hesitates to tickle you as he usually does, instead he feels the need, the desire to connect your lips. His lips are soft and warm and he tastes of a fruit he just ate, apple or mango slices and to him, your response is everything. Your hands wander up his coat lapels, reaching his shirt collar and tugging him closer, lovingly. He giggles when you break away and he can't stop the smile that lights his whole expression, looking at you with possibly all the love in in his eyes and he doesn't notice that this occurs whenever he looks at you. ''Jaeyoon...'' you start, chuckling when he's just about to kiss you but then he pulls away to hear what you have to say, nodding to tell you that he's listening. You laugh at his adorable movement, bringing him closer for another kiss, ''I have so many questions'', ''shoot!'' he adorably says but you shake your head instead, wrapping your hands around him and the two of you bring yourselves together, under the bright summer lights and muffled screeching of seagulls arguing over who gets the last bread crumb.
I'm not sure if Jaeyoon's one for semi-public sex or not, I've been quite conflicted in my thoughts about this. He may not be or he may be, especially if he's horny for you, more often that not, in places he shouldn't do. Imagine that you are moving to a new place, your sofa is strapped at the back of the moving truck. He's going to drive you but he's not ready to move the truck all morning. He'd let you know that he's in the mood by having you in his arms and well grabbing your ass, dipping his hand in between your thighs, ''y/n, I want you.'', he'd say, plain and simple. You'd kiss and kiss till he's settle you down on the sofa, the truck parked in between two tall structures on a sun-out, non-traffic studded cobble road. ''Really?'', you shouldn't be surprised as you look at your boyfriend rolling on the condom and entering you, ''Really?'', ''yes'', he says laughing, ''Yes baby, god I love you so much.'', he's overcome with emotions. He loves when you grab his ass during sex, especially when he has you under him, filling you up with his cock till he's released and is looking around, tugging his trousers up. He gives you his hand, leading you into the front seats. For whatever reason, he doesn't let go of your hand, ''So you going to drive or?'', ''I'm not sure that we should leave right now.'', ''We need to be there by noon, it's already oh!- five thirty. We have to leave now.'', ''Okay'' he nods, picking up the pace to your new house. You unload all your stuff into the house and then, it's the cardboard boxes. He's looking around, trying to make this work. At the back his mind, he knows that he's going to help you unpack and maybe even move in with you but for now, he's a little distracted. You can't help but ask, ''Babe'', ''Huh?'', ''What's going on? You are just staring at the boxes'', you say smiling when you spell it out. ''I'm just uh- come here?'', you go over, going to look at something. He sits on one of the boxes and pulls you onto his lap, placing soft kisses along your neck. The ache in his groin stirs and he groans into your neck. The image of you having sex moments ago is still engrained into his head, your sweaty skin and visual expressions, sounds are still on his mind. He gently slips your open shirt over your shoulders and your bra strap along with it, placing a kiss on your breast, hands wandering up and down your waist all the time. ''Don't stress over the move, you've got a lot of time.''. The moment is forever in your mind, fresh or not, it's a significant period of time, the time in between a few moments ago and getting accustomed to your new house. You manage to find a place outside, on the lawn with it's fresh grass, your clothes off and him making love to you. All the energy he had before comes back, as the sounds of hips snapping against yours can be heard as compared to his words, ''You're so beautiful'' and other random mumblings about you. It's too sweet. The scene I imagine now is that you are riding him in your new background, his back on the grass and you circle your hips, steadying yourself on his toned tummy. His moans sound sweet, just like when he whines softly, muffled, stuttering ever so often. When he's close and the snapping of your hips grow quicker, his moans get more breathy and the look on his face is one as a result of his closeness to releasing. The look of his as he releases could best describe the phrase, 'like the crashing of waves on a summer day'.
Dawon | Lee Sanghyuk:
Oh, what a cutie! His part in Fanatic!
I have an inkling that he sounds pretty when he's in his element of safety and comfort around you and especially, with you. Let's take our imaginations somewhere, possibly fun!: With his regal stage outfit, the one of blue and white, imagine that you meet him in Narnia, transported via the painting. The room that was once filled with water from the Sea on High Waters painting leaves you and washes you onto a beach of an island, dry. You are surprised but also pleasantly happy to be back, it's been some time since you've seen your relatives. Forward, there's nothing for miles except for water, happily splashing around in the midst of a summer day where breeze gently blows past your ears. Behind are walls of rock of an impossible feat, at least to climb. Further on top, you have to squint to see, there are the unmistakable green flashes of leaves and trees with sways a result of stronger breeze. On this beach is where you meet Sanghyuk. He's dressed in a way that a royal would, if not, that's how he walks, along with his soldiers. The buttons to his sleeveless blue coat are open and his crew look tired, as if it's been a long journey here. ''Excuse me, who are you?'' he asks customarily, not sensing any danger. His soldiers hang back but not too far. ''I'm...'' but you are lost for words. How do you explain it? Crowned by Aslan? You have no idea who they are. ''Come with me" he says, looking here and there, urgency in his tone. It's funny how he disarms your cautiousness, with his honesty and personality- humour that goes straight to your heart. ''Give me a minute'', he mentions to one of his crew members and with that, he shows you past the railing of the huge boat. It has it's name engraved in white right below you but you can't make out it's name. ''See, after we crash landed- the storms'' he clarifies, ''we've been stuck here''. He smiles even as he says it and then you realise, even in such a terrifying situation, how beautiful his smile is. He's optimistic, it should help with the rest of your journey, you think. And it does. You begin. Just before you make your first stop, you encounter magic in the form of gold, so much gold just scattered all over the valley. A trap. Anybody who came here died. You found skeletons under all of it. ''We need to get out of here'', at that moment, dust swarms your vision in a regulated dance, as if it has had time to practice on all the people that came before. You collectively shudder at the thought but at the end, you live. It is your bravery and ever longing passion to fight for what is right that impresses him. Along the way, you tell him the truth, one secret for the other except that it's not a secret and neither of you have anything to hide. Because it's something to be hidden either. You get to know one another after that, introduced properly after your revelations. You find somewhere inside the forest to rest, on a thin sheet, here to rest for the night. You are anxious. He hovers over you, running his hands up and down your arms. Soothing you, that is the feeling, with him it feels safer, almost as if your anxiety about the previous fight has been sucked away, into the lost abyss of any voice in this forest. His crew members are searching. ''Look at me'', he says, softly, like a command but sincerely, ''Does it work on your crew, when you speak to them like that?'' you tease softly from under him, curiously committing his features to memory. Out of all your adventures, this one was going to be your favourite, you could tell. ''If they knew..'' he trails off sweetly kissing your neck, ''They would never leave me alone.'', he ends with a chuckle. You chuckle at it too. You take in a breath and it occurs to you that as much as you are relaxed, you haven't taken a breath in a while. He eyes you, keenly, wondering if you should be okay with this. Your secrets are out in the open and he has no reason to worry, the last thought along calms him. ''Less talking Hyukie'', you murmur, grappling at his coat lapels. He perks up, it is because of the name. That name, he thinks, uttered
so softly, containing so much love. It is as if you read his mind that you murmur once again, ''Hyukie'', ever so softly now, drawing him upwards and connecting your lips to his. The world is silenced, it's noise drowned out as well your tension, long forgotten now. He loves the nickname. It stirs him up, the way you say it, how you say it, he wants to keep hearing it. Then is the other concern that he will never see you after this, that you will be transported back to the world beyond the painting you came from.
He pushes it away as he reveals your top, exposing the curve of your breast ever so beautifully. And then he makes the brave move of uncovering your breasts, lingering his lips over the supple skin. Your stretch marks or not, your tattoos or not, or not, he kisses the skin, taking your perky bud into his mouth. He makes you gasp, swallowing the bud into his mouth and flickering his tongue around it. It's so arousing. There's a fire in your belly, of all the things he does to you, he cares for you. There's enough room for that. The most poignant is his voice, his groan when he's entering you, holding you and gasping at the unholy loving expression on your face. There are some things about you like your moans as he makes your toes curl and his face when you release for the nth time throughout that would make him release, immediately, on the spot, if he were to ever witness it if the two of you were not under such circumstances. He wants to hold you close to him, to relish in these moments he has with you because he doesn't know when it's going to finish, the expedition or- what the two of you have. So he does exactly that, gasping so prettily when you straddle him, ''You're so pretty you know?'' you can't help but say. Everything about the way he sees you right now, through hooded eyes that struggle to stay open because he wants to see, to commit, your waist that he holds as he guides you up and down on his cock, the way your breasts bounce, your expression and how you can't hold in your moans. From this position, you feel him in deeper, he moves his hands from your waist to holding your own, gently coaxing another release out of you. He takes in everything and moves in tandem with you, like two people on opposite sides of a street, instinctively walking when they see the signal turn green. Visually, he absorbs everything which is why, he couldn't be finished, not now. You lay in his arms, awake at almost six in the morning when the sun is barely peeking out from behind the mountains. You have a conversation about moments before when he awoke to you rustling your trousers on. He has his arms wrapped around you, like he doesn't want you to leave and from you confessing that you like him moments earlier, you suspect that you won't go now. His insatiability comes back when confesses that he likes you to, swathing you in his kisses, making you moan and grab him everywhere as you ask him of all the things he would gladly do for you.
Rowoon | Kim Seokwoo:
Possible au?, I'm in love with au's these days: I suspect that Seokwoo would introduce you to his cabin that is not to far away from civilisation. He could have met you as a new neighbour who recently moved into town and someone you grew close to very quickly or more towards the angel/demon au trope, he rescues you from a little accident which explain why he lives where he lives, there is nobody to bother him but is close enough for him to gather supplies. Truthfully, you could think of anything but the main principle applies: he is someone that you can trust and a person who lives in a balance of ambience and peacefulness whilst having fun. Every resident is excited since winter usually prolongs the days, making it seem as if its been cold for very long which some people enjoy and some people don't. Either way, summer dwindles the ice on the tree leaves, reducing it to puddles but it also brings out the playful sounds of birds and children and adults playing in the parks. If you are the new resident, he makes it a point to show you around, the parks, the offices, the restaurants, places to shop and relax. He also catches feelings for you, much more in a slow burn kind of way than fast falling and right from the start. Little touches or closeness makes him pause a beat and think about what he felt but sometimes he doesn't get that chance of thinking. It just occurs-when he's flustered. Say for example that you touch his hand or stand close to him, the proximity rises pink onto his cheeks, a prominent colour on him. You definitely go on a trip together, maybe a picnic on a day that is not particularly windy. This is different from meeting up outside of work or going on little adventures to the restaurants to try out a new cuisine or the pub or for shopping groceries. It's possible that he may not be shopping for himself but he'll accompany you where you go. All the times you go on a picnic are special to him, especially if you make some food for it, he'll appreciate it gladly but if you don't, he'll make it a point to make something. If you feed him, be assured that at first he may pull back but will like it very much, like the type that you love on second tries and continue loving it. It's then at the picnics that he'll gravitate towards what you like, he's curious in your tastes for example cotton candy or sweets or what games you like to play and your life before you came to this place. At pubs, you know what you like but he's not afraid to try out something new. It may be something that he'll want to share with you. Going to the pub becomes a thing when you want to speak to the other, tell each other about your day and eat and drink but most of all, to see the other person. Grocery shopping is well, the domestic side of him that makes you melt with his recommendations after staying in the place for so long that he knows what's good and what's not. It's only after you acknowledge your feelings for one another that he dwells on his sexual feelings for you, growing them one by one.
His voice is husky and it feels weird for me to describe it in this way but very naturally, it's a part of him. A part that you love. When he sees you from the back and surprises you, his voice makes it never sound like a surprise. Instead it soothes the tense posture you immediately assumed when you felt a figure come from behind you. His hugs are bear hugs, that he showers you with constantly, when he sees you, to hold you when you are upset and even when he is. When he nestles into your neck on a gloomy day, he can feel his stress seep away and bring something better- calm. It only goes to say then that when you make love, he loves to hold you in his arms, thrusting into your core. His moans make your feverish with delight, with a reflection of the icy weather melting into little puddles. It also become something that the two of you do, mutual masturbation, when you make out and as if on cue, you giggle and pull part. You lay on your back and he hovers above you, stroking his cock, small, breathy moans falling from his lips at the wonderous sight in front of him. At first if you are shy, he'll coax you softly with his voice, whispering, ''You can do this'', that little edge that it takes to soothe your mind and give it a go. In his eyes, you are a beauty and to see you fill yourself with your fingers makes him have to hold onto something, like grip the end of the bed or it's sheets tightly. After you release, he may take you to some other part of his cabin, maybe the kitchen to eat something but distracted by your naked body will he rub his cock in between your ass cheeks, putting you onto the counter and taking you from behind. In the way that makes your mouth fall open.
Zuho | Baek Juho:
Frustrated typing at his keyboards fills the room drawing a raise of your eyebrows half way up your forehead at the absolute demolition you hear. He leans back in his chair, sighing, ''You know, when was it?'', ''hm?'' he turns to you. The same chair he uses for producing, you are currently in his studio. ''Jaeyoon said that you couldn't game because you would... destroy the keyboard.'' and you have to laugh at this. He pretends to be unimpressed but a small smile peaks up in automatic response to seeing you smile. After seeing his expression, you laugh even more, his arms are crossed and he's staring at you as if to say, ironic but he won't say it out of a false hope at retaliation. You were pretty good, alright but to him, it was wonders! How could you do such stuff?! Moments later, he quits the game and opens a file, the studio grows peaceful as the keys of the keyboard are tapped in near silence, a huge contrast to the clickety-boom!-clackety of before. You grow bored. Feet shuffle from behind him and onto his lap, distracting him from his hold on his mouse and screen, your figure covers it. He smiles, innocently, very cutely in fact as you play with the material of his jumper, feeling his embrace bring him in-line with your chest which he nuzzles into. He sighs, asking, ''do you want to take a break?'', eliciting a yes! in thought and sound, tugging him to the sofa. The sofa is... comfy. You lay on it, extending your arms. He settles into them, hugging your waist and resting on your tummy. ''Ju?'', you ask, waiting a beat, ''How is it going?'', another way of asking his progress on the song, further leading to when you can listen to it. It's as if he knows your true questions because he says, ''Soon'', voice muffled by his hiding in your tummy. He pulls your top up, staring for a beat with a look that takes your breath away. His eyes... they marvel in deep thought that you think you know what he's about to ask you for your ''talk'' later. Your breath is taken away. You know what he wants to say, it's on the tip of your tongue but you can't voice it. Surely, you want to hear it from him even more. You would marvel even more then. ''Let's have that talk now?'', your breath hitches, pauses in your throat. He's got more reasons to come inside of your now and the thoughts makes your core ache. You squeeze your thighs together out of reflex. You sit up and so does he, his hands rests on your thigh. You can feel the heat from his legs that are so close to yours, suddenly becoming aware of his cologne that invades your senses. He reaches for your hand, eyes wide, looking around before he starts, ''Babe, I-'' but stops short. You hum, realising that it's importance made him pause. You give him an encouraging look, ''Go on, just say it, blurt it out, anything baby'', squeezing his hand in comfort. He sees your eyes, the love they have in them and he just says it, without a pause or hesitation. ''I want to have a baby, with you of course.'', he says and the last part provokes laughter. ''A baby?'', you ask, he nods, ''With me?'', now he sees that you are teasing and pulls back, ''But why? Why with me?''. Your laughter and playful teasing ease the tension he feels. At least you aren't averse to the idea. When you stop laughing, you reach to cusp his cheeks, ''Baby, I'd like that idea.''. Those words are enough for him to lose his mind. He thought that this decision would take time, weeks if not for just one day but his questions have been answered. Just like that, his shock wears off. It takes him less than a second to pull you up and start jumping around, out of pure joy. He sobers up pretty quickly though, must faster than you anticipate, he's pulling his stuff off the table, switching off the lights. ''Home?'' you ask, taking the lead. When you get into the car, you say, ''This is kinda funny, we couldn't possibly be running home for this.'', ''Why not?'', ''There's no expiry, at least not for now. We've got... time.'', ''Yes?'', ''Yes'' you confirm, nodding your head, heading home. ''Also, why are we going home?'' you ask,
''What do you mean?'' he replies, not believing why you have no idea that you're leaving his studio early. ''It feels weird to leave early.'', you want to stop over somewhere. He sees your anxiousness, ''Lets stop over the station and buy something to eat.'', pointing at the turn. When you get out of the car, you can finally breathe, leaving the anxiety accompanied by your decision earlier. He takes your hand, holding your cheek and pulling you closer. He needed to do this. To give you a kiss which he first places very delicately on your cheek and then on the corner of your lips, finally on your lips. The moment is everlasting. He cups both your cheeks, gently, kissing you lovingly as if to say a multitude of unspoken things.
*sigh*, dear anon, I did it again: I strayed off-topic. I should be ashamed but the above writing is gold so I will include the little titbits after this: Ju's voice colours everything he feels, even if it's just a little bit, his hands may twitch or he'll sound a low sound that will alert you of what he's feeling. His best sound is when he gasps, it's not too much neither too little. He throws his head back and his back arches, it takes a small breath for him to resume. The scene I imagine as I write this is him receiving a blowjob. Otherwise, he would love to try out having sex in new places with you. Against the counter? Having you lean against it as his cock fills you up? Slowly, lovingly? He's all for it, whatever or wherever you imagine yourself to be, with him.
Yoo Taeyang:
We'll start from the end: when he releases, his soft pants are capturing, distracting you even a little from your agenda of releasing your juices around his cock. His favourite position to have you ride his cock with your hands clutching his waist, circling your hips on his, he can't control the haziness that cloud his expression. His hands wander a lot though, to your nipples, pinching them but ever so often, he feels like tasting you. Having you in his mouth, to swirl his tongue around and relish in the beauty of how you taste. He brings you down, close to his chest so that he can take your bud in his mouth, ''I neglected this didn't I?'' and at your whines, he nods, chuckling, ''I'm sorry about that...'', trailing off to add extra vibration of pleasure that travel straight south. He's charismatic, without even trying.
Imagine another set of scenarios: Taeyang punishing. It's at a party, in a house containing lots of rooms save for the fact that the party is only on the first floor, you know that it's progress to the upper floors throughout the night. He takes you somewhere remote, messily clashing his lips against yours, tugging at your clothes. You've moved past the need for words. On your knees, you take his cock, bobbing your head and for the god lack of co-ordination, you stumble at first but he's quick to reassure you that you can do whatever for the first couple of times because he'll teach you well. His yelp is disappointingly loud when you playfully run your teeth along his cock and you peer up, to see his heated eyes, out of annoyance. ''On purpose?'' is the question that his expression seeks to answer but to which there is no answer. His moans are concealed when his hands land harshly on your ass, his cock red and hard no doubt. But instead, you pant and so does he, his breathing heavy and he struggles to stop just to fill you up. There's a hint of body worship that peeks out there, running his hands up and down your body, even into the dip in between your legs, coating his fingers in your juices. He loses control for a bit there, turning you around and kissing you with such high energy. His feelings for you- all over the place. In surprise, to contrast his previous energy, he gets down on his knees. He wants to. One leg over his shoulder, he dives in to taste your juices, placing kitten licks everywhere before pumping you with his digits, sucking greedily and only after he's wrecked you with one release or more as seen by your quivering thighs and shaking body but heated for more does he come back on top. If you don't think that you could release one more time, he's completely okay with it, equally loving your mouth on his cock that pushes him over the edge, once again with sheer force.
How about a best friends to lovers au now?: The suspect of loving you in this long-winded game is Taeyang, long-winded as in the past couple of months you've gotten to know one another. He's straightforward, to tell you that he likes you when the chance is there, an electric energy present, just before the two of you are about to kiss. He tells you how he feels about you. From there, your words satiate his nervous composure with relaxation. He kisses you, somewhat compose, majorly giddy from your confessions. He kisses you till your back hits the covers, passionately. Kissing your breasts (or chest), he loves to uncover you, to take his time, rocking his hips against yours in a pace that is just in between making love and fucking, he'll take your hot skin into his mouth, nipping and sucking and then hold your hands above your head, when a release rips through you. His groans beautifully grace your ears when he releases, kissing you once again. He would settle in beside you, giggling about what just occurred with a smile so shiningly bright or go to sleep and then wake up later to explore your attractions to one another, once again.
Hwiyoung | Kim Youngkyun:
Kyun has attitude
I'm sure that it may be not what you asked for but what is this blog without my ramblings??: When you first have sex together, he reaches for you. To touch you, to feel you and to remember every intimate moment he has with you. He'll feel your body, every part of you, your cheeks, chest, waist, tummy, inner thighs, backside and even places where stretch marks and/ or tattoos lie because those are personal to you. He'll show you and perhaps even tell you that your body is beautiful, multiple times. A beautiful session of making love follows. Where every moment is spent in each others arms as he fills you again and again, revelling in the sounds you make, Your cries, moans, whimpers incite him to hold you and continue his love-making.
His sounds vary but the majority are audible: his grunts when he enters you, his moans when he holds the headboard as he fucks into you or his cries that he let's out into the crook of your neck as you ride him. When he receives a blowjob, he doesn't hide his moans but it's not about hiding, he wants you to know. All in all, his sounds are low in tone, very pretty and arousing.
A little story for you, dear anon: It's summer! Unlike the others, this one is comparatively cooler. The breeze blows past your cheeks. You return home to find Youngkyun with an apron tied around his waist, delicately chopping the food and placing them into the utensil. The apron is an adorable sight that crinkles your eyes. For your boyfriend that regularly throws gang signs, it adds to the overall clarity of his cute demeanour. "Babe" you start your greetings but upon seeing you, he immediately throws off his apron and comes towards you, eliciting peels of laughter from you. He picks you up and places kisses all over your cheeks, ''I missed you'', he says, pouting. At your smile, he takes you to the bedroom, placing you on the bed. You wait, smiling, he's changing, ''Right now?'', ''Right now'', he nods, energy on full blast. He straddles you, placing smooth kisses everywhere, ''You are so pretty, you know that?'' he whispers, taking off your top and bottom. "Babe, really, how was your day?" you ask, the both of you laugh at the question as you switch positions, straddling him instead. Filling yourself up with his cock, you hear his little grunt upon entering and a sigh of relief comes from the both of you when he's completely in. The sounds he makes is beautiful in every tone. His hands on your backside guide your hips along his cock and ever so often, he let's out these pretty high-pitched moans, throwing his head back and swallowing all the arousal flooding through his body. You chuckle, moaning in his mouth as you give him a soft kiss. After you release, droplets of sweat can be seen on both of you and pink clouds his face, heated. Panic sets in his features. "What's going on-?" you ask, he doesn't move but points to the door, "the food". "We have to go save it", you say, little, displaced confessionals occurring now. You go to the kitchen and while he assesses for damage, you lean on your elbow, peeking at him in his naked form. It would very hard to argue with him if he was naked, you think. He nods, picking you and placing you on the counter, cuddling you. The moment could last forever. In between your legs, he doesn't bother with anything but laying peacefully in the crook of your neck, "Baby, I love you, I also feel like this was overdue", you chuckle, "of course not peach, I love you too" you say. A beat later, he kisses your neck, not hesitating to take a little bite that draws a laugh from you, ''Kyun!'', ''huh, babe?'' is his honest reply as he continues, till his mouth has reached your core.
Chani:
He grasps the back of your head, gently easing you along his cock. Eagerly, he watches your mouth swallow his cock, his own growing dry at the sight. A slight twitching to be expected, you chuckle at the expression on his face, ''Chani'', you take yourself off his cock, snapping his attention to you. Truthfully, he was so aroused by the sight, he lost himself in it. You chuckle, brushing away strands of hair from his face. ''What is it?'', you ask to which he responds by taking you hands in his and squeezing ever so subtly to let you know that nothing is wrong, ''I was just staring, I'm sorry-'' he goes to apologise but you shake your head, already knowing that he was absorbing the visuals. He is surprised that his mouth works, could he even speak after watching something so heavenly? He's not sure that words could be formed. He leans on one hand, sitting on the bed with you in between his legs, taking him into your mouth once more, eliciting a groan from him, soft to begin with, accompanied by the scrunch of his nose at the feeling of warmth. He looses him hand on the back of your head when he feels like he's about to fall on his back. Your hands slowly trail up his inner thighs, squeezing the flesh along the way, pumping his shaft to kitten lick his tip, a trail of saliva coating your mouth and connecting to his tip. His eyes, although occasionally close out of pure arousal, he makes sure that they are open. By the time he's about to release, a layer of sweat lines his pink-dusted, heated temples. When he's close, his moans grow louder and he pants, making unconfigurable noises. The words that he wants to tell you, how he's feeling, how good you are for him and to him get strangled in his throat, instead coming out as muffled noises and quivering thighs. If you let him release into your mouth, he collapses on his back after as you straddle him. After a few moments, he would be in the mood to eat you out and have sex with you after. If you take him out of your mouth and pump him, he would prefer to release all over your backside, your butt that he'll repeatedly squeeze and even take a bite out off when he eats you out before he fills you up. He's ready to make love with you, surprising you and himself with his energy, pent-up, ''I'm surprised'', ''About what? This?'', ''Yes, very much.'', ''Babe, look at me.'', ''Huh?'', ''After sleeping for half your life, you have accumulated these reserves of energy...'', ''Babe please'' he says, stifling his laughter at your teasing.
For his sounds, he could also be non audible. For whatever it is that the two of you are doing, he could be exploring what he is feeling, especially the first couple of times that he has sex or receives a blowjob or mutually masturbates, a new situation.
How about a detective Chani au?: He's a rough character, particularly because of his past experiences in his job, naming more death than life, he once found it hard to stay afloat all the floating bodies in his nightmares. He's been there and he's not willing to go back, he's struggling and he knows. In this au, you are a random stranger, cross-pairing from a different department to hunt down a very articular group of organised crime. Around you, his control on his behaviour slips, like his physical affection and how much he speaks, he guards himself on a daily basis, stubborn to keep it that way. He fights with you, demeaning you and when he hears your words, they ring in his ears and also bring about a familiar, painful feeling in his chest. Even when he kisses you. He's rough, pushing you on your hands and knees, taking you from behind. Then, unconsciously, he brings you to his chest when he realises that you must be close and praises you, ''You're doing so well''. He also realises that he wants you by his side. You don't pretend to know who he is, despite his true horror stories of dead backlogging teams and ruined missions, unlike the people he works with. Guilt long suppressed clouds his chest, it's a weird feeling, even when the two of you are done and you take him into your arms. He's crying. You give him some space. He looks up when you come back into the room with water and some tissues, ''Here, tell me why you've been such a dick.''.

warnings | female pronouns, angst, spoilers for episode one of the netflix adaptation of sweet home, if you haven’t watched episode one complete then this won’t make much sense, panic attacks, the general horror of sweet home, eun-hyuk being a logical pain in the ass, somewhat of an open-ending.
word count | 1.7K
author’s note | i hope this satisfies your masochistic desires! i’m honestly so happy to have angst as my first request, and that isn’t sarcasm at all.

The sound of his descending footsteps echoing throughout the concrete stairwell became background noise to Eun-Hyuk as he stared at the unanswered messages he had sent you well over an hour ago. This was strange behavior coming from you, considering you usually responded back within minutes. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, he tried to think of a logical explanation to calm his increasing worries. Perhaps your phone died on your walk home, or you had to work over-time without a chance to inform him.
He was certain some minor inconvenience caused your abrupt absence, although he couldn’t shake off the unnerving feeling settling like a burden of tense muscles upon his shoulders. Realizing there wasn’t much more he could do, especially since all the calls he gave you went straight to voice mail, he decided to wait patiently for a reply from you and try to keep his thoughts clear during the meantime.
Eun-Hyuk stuffed his phone into his pocket as he finally reached the half-open double doors that led out onto the first floor, his ears immediately picking up on the commotion before he looked over at the front entrance that was blocked by the shutters. A group of people stood dispersed nearby, talking amongst themselves and watching one resident in particular as he tried tugging on the metal bracing that barely budged. The man sighed, dropping his arm and admitting defeat as he walked away from the shutters, mumbling to himself.
‘First the elevators aren’t working, and now this?’ he thought to himself, unimpressed with the current situation, especially since he had work that night. He wasn’t the only one annoyed by the circumstances as the surrounding people openly expressed their vexation. Although, unlike most of them, he remained calm and simply observed the scene with his hands in his pockets. Multiple residents spoke loud enough for him to catch on to the fact that the security guard was missing, which made little sense considering this was an issue for him to resolve.
“Excuse me?” a feminine voice sounded from behind him, causing him to turn around and look at the woman. “Do you have any service on your cell?” Despite having just been on his phone, Eun-Hyuk was so preoccupied with his thoughts regarding your whereabouts that he didn’t notice the minor detail of whether he had any service.
Pulling out his phone and unlocking it, he immediately dialed your number, taking the possibility to hopefully connect with you and find out where you were. When his ear met with a high-pitched ringing, Eun-Hyuk lowered the phone, lost in thought for a second before looking at the woman.
“I guess not,” he said, watching as her face dropped in disappointment and she turned to walk away, but he stopped her with a question. “What’s going on here?”
The woman hesitated, wondering if anything was even worth sharing considering she would give him more questions than answers. She went on to explain how every main exit had been closed up, locking everyone inside. Although she speculated someone was behind this, she had no idea who it was and for what purpose it was done.
The explanation caused Eun-Hyuk to swallow thickly before turning his gaze towards the concealed entrance. He stared for a moment, silently wishing for your safety.
                                                          ―――
A shrill ringing penetrated your ear, causing you to jerk your head away from your phone and hang up on your attempt at calling Eun-Hyuk. With a frustrated cry, you threw your cellphone upon the ground, hearing the shattering of the screen as it smacked face-first against the concrete.
On the verge of tears, you made yourself as small as possible in the alleyway's corner, pulling your knees up to your chest as you rested your forehead on top of them. Your breathing grew increasingly more labored as the sensation of dread and pure hopelessness consumed your mind.
Eun-Hyuk’s words repeated in your head during times like this, when you were at risk of having a panic attack. Stay still. Take slow breaths. Think of something nice.
You squeezed your eyes shut, allowing the gathering tears to flow freely down your cheeks as they gathered at the tip of your chin. Forcing yourself to take in deep breaths, your trembling body gradually stilled. Eventually, your thoughts morphed as you focused on your breathing, rather than the surrounding chaos.
Think of something nice.
Eun-Hyuk’s face filled your mind, the sight prompting a ghost of a smile. You recalled your first meeting which occurred almost a year ago, when you had just moved into Green Roof Apartments. Someone had suddenly removed the towering stack of boxes you were carrying from your hold, and just as you were about to thank the person for helping, you realized you recognized him.
It turns out that you both used to attend the same high school, although you weren’t in the same class, your friend group interacted with his friend group quite a lot. Seeing his face brought back all those times at lunch when you would sneakily try to steal glances at him without your friends noticing. They noticed, of course, and teased you relentlessly about your crush but they were nonetheless supportive. They even proposed setting you two up on a date, because a ‘little birdie’ told them he had been crushing on you too.
Unfortunately, you were in such denial that someone as handsome as him had feelings for you, and rejected the offer. He was simply unobtainable, the extent of your relationship never surpassing polite greetings and friendly smiles until you both graduated and never saw each other again. Or at least, that’s what you assumed would happen.
It seemed fate gave you two another chance, unsatisfied with your prior silent pining and not acting upon anything. Considering you both matured immensely, talking came easy, and it wasn’t long before a much deeper connection began blossoming between the both of you.
His sister reacted indifferently when she walked out into the hallway one day, only to witness the both of you moving suspiciously away from each other, as if trying to conceal something. She caught on immediately, especially since her brother had been mentioning you quite often.
“Seriously? He’s the best you can do?” She scoffed, eyeing her brother disapprovingly before pushing between the both of you and walking off. You stared at her retreating figure in shock, oblivious to the smile on Eun-Yoo’s face as she disappeared down the stairs.
Once his sister found out, Eun-Hyuk became increasingly more open in terms of your relationship. And eventually, after a long week of his sister degrading him for not moving to the next step, he asked you to be his girlfriend. It wasn’t the most romantic of set-up’s; he had knocked on your door and asked you so casually that you wondered if he was joking.
When he assured you he wasn’t, you almost knocked him off his feet from the abrupt hug you gave him, accepting his simple proposal.
The memory faded, and the realization hit you like a truck. Eun-Hyuk was waiting for you, and you couldn’t give up on him. Taking a deep breath, you got up from the ground, trying not to focus on the screams and sounds of destruction in the distance as you lightly jogged towards the entrance of the alleyway. You peered behind the wall and looked both ways. The coast was clear; it was now or never.
                                                           ―――
You raced around the corner, narrowly dodging the attention of a nearby monster as its head popped up from one of the many dumpsters lining the brick wall of Green Roof Apartments, the location you had been trying to reach from when this all started.
The sound of metal creaking, which you quickly recognized to be the shutters descending, urged your aching legs to run faster as the darkness before you faded the closer you got to the entrance. That’s when you noticed Eun-Hyuk struggling to keep the shutters open as a distraught woman crawled towards him. He reached out a hand towards her, just as he looked up and made eye contact with you. His eyes widened at the sight, although bloodied and bruised, you were very much alive. You smiled at him, relieved, feeling safe already.
That was until you heard a rustling coming from your right, along with animalistic groans, as if something was just stirring back to life after being immobilized and ready to lash out again. A flurry of panicked voices came from the lobby of the apartment, everyone watching in horror as the hunched-over silhouette of the monster with a snake-like tongue began recovering to its full height.
Luckily for you, the monster disregarded your presence as it ambled towards the entrance. You stood frozen in fear as the shadow of its body passed over you, the sound of its languid steps lulling you into a trance as your body trembled lightly.
It was perceptible that trying to run past it would end in your demise, leaving you stuck on what to do. Your pleading eyes drifted towards Eun-Hyuk, hoping he would come up with a plan to distract the monster long enough so you could make a break for the gap underneath the shutters he had been holding open - a perfect enough size for you to slide under.
He stared you dead in the eyes as he dropped the shutters; the metal clanging loudly against the tiled floor. You blanched, staring back at him in disbelief. A semblance of guilt took over his features, and you shook your head in denial.
Your eyes stung with tears, and you wondered whether to cry and beg for him to help you or keep the remaining bit of dignity you had left. The monster suddenly shot its tongue within the gaps of the barred metal and Eun-Hyuk disappeared from sight as he dodged; the trance you were in instantly dissipating as you came to terms with the situation.
He left you to fend for yourself, surrounded by a horde of monsters. You weren’t sure whether to give up or keep going, considering nothing seemed worth fighting for at the moment.
Did he regret it? Of course. Would he do it again? Without question. Eun-Hyuk would sacrifice anyone to keep his sister safe, even you, and even himself.
