I’ve been reading lots of stuff about autistic Hotch. How do you think Hotch stims? Are there any gifs/examples from episodes?

OKAY so this is going to be a long list because I just went back through the episodes I've seen up to specifically looking for examples! But thank you for asking. I've been meaning to collect examples somewhere.

(I'll preface this with saying that everyone stims and just because I mention something here doesn't mean anyone is automatically autistic because they do that too.)

The main thing I can think of is what I very descriptively call "the hand thing" he does.

This is probably the clearest example of it in a gif I could find. What I mean is the way he rubs his thumb over the ends of his fingers. I see it as a fairly subtle way to stim and it tends to come up mostly when he's either thinking or stressed. That's the main thing I've picked up on because he does it quite a lot; I haven't gone over the earlier episodes specifically yet - only skimmed certain parts based on the incidences of it I found going through screencaps from @masterwords - it seems most prevalent in the earlier seasons.

A few more examples - they don't all have the actual motion in them but you can see his fingers curled up like that. He also brings his hand up near his face somewhat often, again usually when he's thinking.

He also does it a ton while walking and standing in general. Some more screenshots (thanks again @masterwords)

Two occasions stick out to me, both when he was distressed or highly worried at least. First is in Omnivore (4x18). It isn't strictly the thumb-over-the-fingers but it is similar, with his hand balled up and almost hiding his face at first.

And the second I really like because we get the hand stim very clearly but also rocking! It's in 2x08, when Derek refuses to step away from the lady with a bomb under her car. Please ignore the choppy editing and audio lol I just needed to show this:

Here we also see the same thing he does in the above gif of 4x18 - the teeth grinding. I think that's only when he's under a fair bit of distress though.

I've been keeping track of it from now on partly because one day I'm going to compile everything into one absurdly long meta. So I've undoubtedly missed many times and my timings might be a little off but here's some if you want to see examples:

As you can see, it's the most noticeable for me in the early seasons. 9x06 was around when I started keeping track as I watch, not retrospectively, for context.

Not all of these are the hand thing! Some are things like when he picks up a pen he tends to keep it in hand even when he's not actually writing anything, just slightly fiddling with it constantly. And again that's nowhere near JUST an autistic thing but I notice it in addition to the main hand thing.

Another thing is, mostly when he's anxious and holding something like a phone, he'll tap his fingers lightly against it. I have a clip of him somewhere on my blog doing it in 7x07.

There's also what he does with his hands when he isn't stimming that's interesting to me.

Hotch spends a lot of time with his arms either crossed or his hands in his pockets. Often the hand thing and the crossed arms happen at the same, where he'll have his right arm across his chest and with his left running his thumb over his fingers.

I find it really interesting because I read that as trying not to stim. Because if his hands are in his pocket, he can't. If he's got his arms folded, he can't. I'd imagine it fits well with him and his backstory. He's quite reserved in general so it makes sense he wouldn't want to stim very openly even if it's a subtle thing, and then you add in the implications from 1x08 and it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine he was discouraged, whether consciously or not, not to.

Then again, it could also simply be a comfort thing to do something with his hands rather than not stimming. Could be counted as stimming itself - something like pressure.

But in order of most to least frequent, the canon stimming I see from him is

i know it was almost certainly unintentional, but watching season eleven, it really seems like reid just has devastatingly hopeless, unrequited feelings for morgan

the online discussion of ‘queer coding’ in criminal minds often leaves a lot to be desired (and often fundamentally misunderstands what queer coding is) so i am not even arguing that—especially by season eleven—reid is an explicitly/intentionally queer coded character, but the dynamic of their relationship (the specific dialogue, the body language, and how reid handles morgan’s departure) just accidentally, but so clearly, frame it that way

Emily loves to nap in JJ's office. When a day runs long, she's bored of paperwork, she needs some quiet, or she just feels overwhelmed, she goes to JJ and asks if she can work with the other woman. JJ never says no.

Sometimes, Emily actually works. She'll sit on the other side of JJ's desk or spread her papers on the floor and do her best to focus. JJ usually works in silence, but sometimes she'll play music quietly. The sound fills the office and relaxes Emily.

There's an unspoken rule, however, that if Emily doesn't bring paperwork when she comes to see JJ, she's going to take a nap. At some point, JJ had found a couch for her office and crammed it into a corner. It's a little small and a little narrow, but Emily doesn't mind. She just curls up and sleeps.

For JJ's part, she loves Emily's company. She thinks she may get more work done when the other woman is there, even if Emily can be distracting. JJ finds her eyes straying from her paperwork to check on Emily as she sleeps. It's nice to feel trusted.

One day, Emily finds a stuffed black cat on the couch when she enters. It's the softest thing she's ever felt, and it's the perfect middle ground between firm and soft. She looks at JJ, wondering if it's a gift, but the other woman is on the phone, double checking a file, and not paying her any attention.

Emily falls asleep holding the bear. When her phone call ends, JJ snaps a picture on her cellphone, glad the other woman licked the present. JJ bought it at the airport the day before, taken by how much it looked like Sergio.

After that, JJ slowly adds more items to the couch. She leaves a pillow, a blanket knit by Penelope, and bottles of water. Emily always thanks her, but JJ just shrugs. She says it's for her own naps, but both women know she never sleeps.

Hotch learns about Emily's secret naps when he visits JJ's office unexpectedly to say they have a case. JJ is sitting on the couch with her feet propped up a desk chair. She's slowly making her way through case files and slowly combing Emily's hair. The black-haired woman is sleeping with her head in JJ's lap, feet hanging over the edge of the too-small couch. Penelope's blanket covers her haphazardly, she's cradling Sergio 2, and she looks more peaceful than he's ever seen her.

Regretfully, he disturbs them, but the next time they return to JJ's office, there's a new couch. It has an ottoman for JJ's feet, a small table for her files, and plenty of room for Emily's long legs. They take it as permission to continue what they're doing.

Spencer's POV:

I would've been fine.

I would've been fine, with the sudden change of plans, that sent the team here in the first place. I would've been fine, forcing myself making eye contact with the officers during the briefing. I would've been fine, with the stranger occupying the space where Emily should be.

Really, I would've been fine.

But then, someone bumped into me in the local police station.

Normally, I have no problems with physical contact. But, I needed to know it was coming, and I needed to trust the person.

This stranger bumping into me, while I was already on edge, only made things worse. Far worse.

'I'm sorry.' the stranger apologized, because that's what you do when you accidentally bump into each other. You both say sorry, and move on with your lives.

I wanted to say sorry back, I really do, but I just couldn't. I froze for a moment, as I tried to speak, failing miserably. The man gave me a look, and walked away.

Suddenly, I was very aware of the coffee smell, that was hanging in the station. The fluorescence lights, were suddenly brighter, and the complete stranger, who just bumped into me, hadn't showered today. I could hear people chat, but couldn't make any word out of it.

I felt the tears sting, and knew, that I was on the very edge of having a meltdown. Not here. Not now. I wished, that I was home, alone, and could fall apart there. I needed privacy. I started to pace quickly to the single-user restroom, hoping no one would notice. When I made it into the restroom, I was quick with locking the door and turning the light off.

I broke down.

Y/N POV:

I saw what happened. I saw, Spencer bumping into a stranger. I saw, his world changing, because of too many stimuli. I saw, him on the very edge of tears, of having a meltdown. And, I saw, him running towards the restroom.

Spencer, having a meltdown, never happened before. It happens rarely, and I never seen it happen. But, I knew what the symptoms are. When he told me, he was Autistic, I asked questions or search for information on the internet. I wanted to know as many things as possible, in order to help him. To understand him.

Now, I was fully able to keep my promises.

I rushed after him, and knocked gently on the door.

'Spence, it's me. I know what is happening, and I want to help you. Please let me in, I'm alone.'

That last word was the most important. I was alone. He didn't needed attention on him, especially not now.

After a few seconds, the door unlocked. I went in, and immediately locked it after me. There he was. His body, shaking, tears streaming down his face, as he bites his lip, in an attempt to sob as quiet as possible.

The most important thing to do was, stay calm. The least thing he needed, was more worrying. Since, this is the first time I experience this, and it's different with everyone, I wasn't sure if he needed a comforting hug, or that the physical contact only made things worse. So, I decided to just open up my arms, letting him decide.

'You don't need to hug me. Do what's best for you.'

He doubted it. But, made quick the decision, to crash into my arms. I hugged him. I wanted to hug him tightly, but I knew that he needed all the control. He needed to know, that he could pull back, at any given moment. He needed completely control.

I rubbed softly his back, as the tears were still streaming, uncontrollably.

'I am so proud of you, love. You're doing so good. Everything is going to be okey. Just let it all out.' I spoke, softly, hoping it would help.

Eventually, his tears lessened, then stopped, as we were now in comfortable silence. He pulled slightly away, and turned the light back on. Without saying anything, he went to the mirror. The tear traces were mostly gone, but his eyes were still a little puffy and red. He splashed some water in his face, making his eyes a bit better.

'Repitive thinking is a death mill for the brain. For complete brain usage, diverse stimulation is the key.' he spoke out a random fact, most likely wanted to make sure he could talk again.

Then, Spencer turned around, looking at me.

'Thank you so much, (Y/N). You don't know how much you helped me.' I could see the appreciation on his face, making me smile.

'I'm really glad, I could help.' he walked towards me, and wrapped me into a sweet hug.

'Normally, I would have been fine, but then there was this stranger, bumping into me, and-'

'It's okay, love. I understand, everything is okey now.' I hated to cut him off, but it seemed like the best option. He began to get nervous again, and the last thing I wanted, was to make him relive the moment.

'Are you okay?' I asked him, as we pulled apart again.

'Yes, much better now.'

'Good, and remember, I'm always here for you.'

'Thank you. Really, thank you for helping me.'

'No problem, genius. Are you ready to get back?'

'Yeah.'

'You sure?' I asked again, wanting to make sure he's ready. He nodded his head, as I was about to unlock the door.

'Love?'

'Yes?' I turned around, facing him.

'Im here for you too. Always.'

I genuinely adore all of Hotch’s part of 9x05 but I keep coming back to a handful of lines in particular from Haley which strike me so much as pointing towards autistic Hotch. And yes, I know I’m biased. But:

Hotch: Jack misses you, too. 

Haley: Well, then you should talk about me more. You should talk more, period. He's not like you. He needs to hear the words.

and

Haley: Happiness is a choice. So choose. 

Hotch: But how? How do I choose? 

Haley: Get out of your head. really do stick out to me. Talk more to Jack. Talk more. Make it clearer what he’s feeling, express it in a way Jack can understand, because there’s something between them that’s different. Hotch isn’t like Jack. And then to get out of his head - stop overthinking. Stop thinking so thoroughly about absolutely everything (except it’s not that easy when that’s how you process things and emotions, by analysing them). And this is coming from Haley who knows him well, is probably amongst the most familiar with him out of everyone in the show because they were together for so long, which in my eyes gives it a lot of weight.

I don’t know. Looking at it through that lens, these lines just mean a lot to me.

as a result, you frequently search for his touch, knowing spencer's too caught up in his own mind to voice his thoughts. encircling him in a cosy embrace while holding his hands and petting his cheek.

each and every time, he finds himself leaning into your touch. he loves being in your arms every night and is in awe of your touch.

he adores it when you take his cold hands into your warm ones as his hands are almost always freezing.

your boy always finds himself in your arms after an exhausting day of difficult cases. he enjoys putting his head on your lap and talking about his day while you run your hand through his hair and twirl strands between your fingers.

most of the time, he does not need verbal communication; he is delighted to simply be in your company, surrounded by your affection.

he would lean into you every time as your touch grew increasingly compelling to him over time.

after a long day, he would wait for you and either lay next to you or on top of your chest. ee would melt into you with his soft, compassionate touch, as if he wanted to become one with you. however today spencer seemed particularly.. restless.

today your day ended like most, with spencer in your arms as you lay side by side on your bed. however today spencer seemed unable to just agree to your love for him.

“spence, i’ll love you till forever ends.” you mused, running your fingers through his hair.

“that’s an oxymoron.” spencer retorted, so you tried again.

“i’ll love you till the moon meets the sun.”

“technically, you can have both out at the same time.”

“i'll love you till a desert becomes an ocean.”

“there are statistically some deserts that were under water for a long time.”

I am only three episodes into season eight and I have already adopted the autistic Alex Blake headcanon.

Let me explain:

Firstly, her first moment in the show is her explaining the etymology of the term 'nice'. it is established that she is a linguistics professor, but nobody who is neurotypical begins with that.

her general demeanour is quite monotonous. I don't think I have seen any of the team's replacements have a very limited arsenal of facial expressions- even Prentiss, who replaced Greenaway, has a wider range of expressions than Alex Blake.

in s08e03, when Reid is explaining the different criteria between Asperger's (*gag*) and "classical autism" Blake leans back and asks him, "Well, how about you?" to me, this implies that she can tell that Reid is autistic (which at this point isn't even subtext it just plain ole text!) or that she has been assessed before (that is just my theory.)

same episode, after she apologises to reid for insulting him, Blake tells him how she prefers people being straightforward instead of sensitive and skirting around the situation, to which Reid agrees by saying how he is the same way.

this is just my interpretation and I will expand upon it the more I watch this season. so far, I really like dr Blake!
