What If I Told You I’m A Mastermind? (Part One)
A/N: Well, in a completely unsurprising twist, Option B won, so here it is! The first part of my Witchy Nesta fic series. Now, I know what you’re thinking as you’re reading this, but Caty, where is Witchy Nesta? To which I say, this is only Part One. I need to set it all up, ya feel me? Also, you know I had to use a lyric from Miss Swift’s new album for this fic! But you’ll never guess who the mastermind in question actually is ;) Just kidding. You probably can. Anyways! All that to say, hope everyone enjoys :)

Lightning cracks across the sky, a silver chasm that cuts through the inky black of the clouds overhead and brightens the world below if only for a blink. The rumble of thunder that follows shakes the earth down to the roots of the trees that surround Cassian’s backyard, and Cassian swears he can feel the echo in his own bones. He continues to watch out the back window of his kitchen, waiting for the lash of rain to blur the pane, but it seems the clouds are set on holding their breath just a little while longer.
The trees groan and shift under the wind as it picks up, red and yellow leaves losing their battles and swirling down to the grass below. It’s then that Cassian catches movement beneath one of the larger trees, a streak of black that darts under the shrubbery. He feels bad for whatever squirrel or raccoon it is, hopes it can get back to its burrow before the rain starts, but then another streak of lightning brightens the sky, and Cassian gets a better look at the black and white fur, spots pointed ears and little paws and whiskers.
A cat.
There’s a cat in his backyard, and the skies are seconds away from opening up with this terrible storm.
Cassian doesn’t even bother throwing on shoes. He yanks open his sliding glass door and hurries into the backyard barefoot. Of course, as soon as he’s made it over to the brush, that’s when the clouds finally stop holding back, rain pouring down in cold streaks all around him. Cassian hunches his shoulders against the onslaught, pushing his wet hair out of his face, as he crouches down.
“Hey there, little buddy,” Cassian speaks over the sound of the storm, reaching his hand toward the bundle of black and white fur. The cat rears back on its haunches, hissing at him, and Cassian winces, praying to the Mother that he doesn’t earn a scratch or bite for his trouble. “Come on. You don’t want to be stuck out here in this storm, do you?”
Cassian continues to hold his hand out, waiting, counting mentally even as his clothes soak through more and more with rain. The cat continues to eye him, almost calculating with each sweep of those golden eyes. Finally, the cat takes a tentative step forward, sniffing at Cassian’s fingers before pressing under his hand so his palm slides down the fur of its head. With careful, slow movements so as to not spook the poor thing, Cassian shifts his hand to wrap around the cat’s belly, scooping the cat up and tucking it against his chest, using his other hand to continue offering soothing pets.
Cassian rushes back inside as fast as he dares without potentially dropping the cat, yanking the door closed behind him. He sets the cat down gently in the kitchen, heading into his bedroom to peel off his drenched clothes. Once he’s changed into a soft, dry pair of sweats, he grabs a towel, rubbing it roughly through his hair and stepping back into the kitchen.
It’s easy enough to find the trail of watery paw prints along the hardwood, and Cassian finds the cat sniffing and exploring around the cabinets. He uses the towel to scoop the cat back up, gently drying it off despite the cat’s meows of protest and attempts to wiggle free. When he finally pulls the towel away from the cat’s face, its fur is extra fluffy and sticking up all around its face. Cassian just barely holds back his laughter at the sight, and he swears the cat scowls back at him with narrowed, yellow eyes.
“What?” Cassian asks innocently, setting the cat back down and grabbing a bowl to fill with water.
While the cat drinks, Cassian snatches up his phone where he’d left it on the kitchen counter. He snaps a photo of the cat, telling himself it’s so he can post about finding a lost cat and hopefully find the owner, but really, he just sends it to the group chat with his family and friends. It earns him a series of question marks from Rhys and a slew of questions from Mor about being a cat dad now. Cassian does let out a laugh at the response, drawing the attention of the cat who peers up at him and offers up another meow.
“Feeling better now?”
Cassian crouches down so he can scratch behind the cat’s ears, eliciting a series of deep, rumbling purrs, the cat’s eyes falling shut as it leans into Cassian’s touch. He continues to run his hand down the cat's head and back until his own back starts to ache from the position, but when he stands back up, the cat just starts to weave back and forth between his legs, knocking its head against his shins.
He decides to scoop the cat up again, carrying it into his living room and settling on his sofa with the cat on his lap. The cat seems more than okay with the change, curling up without any coaxing. It’s easy enough to find a film on the television, and Cassian relaxes back, aimlessly stroking his hand through the cat’s fur. With every purr, every slide of the soft fur beneath his fingers, Cassian sinks deeper and deeper into the cushions, can feel himself unwinding one muscle at a time and the tension from his work week slipping away.
Perhaps a cat has been what he’s needed this whole time after all.
~ * * * ~
Cassian steps out of his bedroom the next morning, rubbing the remnants of sleep from his eyes and lazily scraping his hair back away from his face. He already has directions to the nearest pet store pulled up on his phone, already has a mental list of everything he will need, starting with food and cat litter. He’s started wondering if he should name the cat himself or ask his family for name suggestions, well past worrying that it makes him a terrible person for not even considering putting up “found cat” posters. The cat doesn’t have a collar on after all.
He finds the cat in question sitting in the front entryway of his house, meowing at the door. When it realizes Cassian has stepped into the room, it stands up and walks closer to the door, looking at Cassian with a look he swears looks like expectancy. As if that isn’t enough, when the silence continues to hang in the room, Cassian not moving and continuing to stand there watching curiously, the cat seems to roll its eyes. It lets out another meow and raises a paw, knocking it against the door.
“Do you need to… be let out?”
Tentatively, Cassian steps toward the door, unlocking it and pulling open. He barely has it open a crack before the cat is darting out, not even bothering to look back, and scampers down the front steps.
“Fuck,” Cassian curses under his breath.
Cassian rushes back into his bedroom, pulling a hoodie on over his sweats. He practically trips over his own feet in his haste to get a pair of shoes on, and then he’s sprinting out the door after the cat. His eyes dart back and forth around the block, trying to figure out where the cat could have possibly run off to. He spots it sitting on the sidewalk at the end of the block. For a moment, Cassian half thinks the cat is waiting for him, especially when it turns its head and meets Cassian’s gaze, but then the cat is taking off again.
Despite Cassian’s best attempts to catch the cat, it leads him to the next block of his neighborhood and down the road to a house that sits on the corner. Cassian’s steps stutter to a stop as he takes in the Victorian architecture, the dark shutters, the wide porch, the turret built into the left side of the house. Has this house always been here?
Cassian has to forcefully shake his mind back into focus, but by the time his thoughts have caught back up to the present, the cat has already made its way up onto the porch. It lets out a meow and the large, wooden front door swings open, the most beautiful woman Cassian has ever seen stepping into view.
Her golden brown hair is braided away from her face, wrapped around to look like a crown atop her head, but a few strands seem to have fallen loose and they fall in whispers along her temples and cheeks, adding to the cutting lines of her features. She’s wearing a black dress, the sleeves of it almost sheer. The v of the neckline accentuates her collarbones and chest, and the hem flutters against her thighs, showing off long, toned legs. Cassian can’t breathe, his whole mouth drying up. He’s never been so mad at himself for wearing sweats out of the house. This woman is a goddess incarnate, and he looks like he just rolled out of bed.
“Finally decided to return home, did you?” the woman asks the cat at her feet, her voice almost melodic. Already, Cassian wants to hear her speak again, wants to hear her say his name, wants to know if her laugh will sound as lilting and lovely.
The cat lets out another meow then looks back toward Cassian. It draws the woman’s attention too, and a pair of eyes so blue they almost look silver land on him. Cassian wants to drown in them, wants to stare into them until he forgets his own name, have them on him for forever. Gods, if he thought she was beautiful before…
The woman tilts her head, those eyes narrowing slightly, and Cassian realizes with a jolt that he should say something, that Cauldron knows how long has passed in just silence between them. He’s standing here, outside her house, like an idiot, his mouth practically hanging open while he openly stares at her. Between that and his appearance, he’s officially making the worst first impression known to man, and Gods, does he want to make a good first impression. He wants a lot of things with this woman.
“Hi, I’m… uh… Cassian,” Cassian starts, nervously rubbing a hand against the back of his neck. “I found your cat in my backyard.”
The woman hums, her eyes sweeping Cassian up and down. It feels like fingers grazing along his spine and he has to swallow hard, even as his blood heats and blazes fire down his limbs. He waits expectantly for the woman to respond and tell him her name, practically thrums with anticipation for it. He swears he can hear it whispered on the autumn breeze swirling around him, swears something deep within his chest rises to meet it, to meet her.
“Thank you for bringing him back,” the woman tells him.
But the woman doesn’t say anything more. She spins on her heel and heads back into her house, her cat trotting in after her. The door swings shut behind them, as if flicked with a phantom hand, leaving Cassian alone on the sidewalk.
It takes all of his willpower to walk away and head back to his own house, but he can’t fight the smile that pulls its way across his face. His mind continues to circle back to that woman. That beautiful woman and the few words she actually said to him. Already, Cassian wants to know more about her, wants to see her again, speak with her. He wonders if he can figure out an excuse to do just that, wonders if he can convince her to go out and get a drink with him.

had a power thought at work today and so i wrote it down in the silly little work memo pad. im just gonna write it all down here. bc i can.
transcription start!
' golden trio? cursed trio. obvi we have harry first, like OBVIOUSLY he's got his curse scar forehead shtick, but also he's like. fought death since age 11 (AT LEAST). mans is not gonna b completely unscathed save for the silly little death curse scar :3 he's prob got a burned palm from the philosopher's stone/quirrdle. quickle. what the fuck's name. him. 2nd year we've got the basilisk fang stab. big scar, pheonix tears or no. 3rd year he got no big wounds from what i can remember? whole lot of emotional trauma but what's new. 4th year burns from dragon in 1st task, maybe some residual gill/webbing scars from gillyweed in 2nd task, then the piece de fucking resistance from the third task. by that i mean forehead scar is prob. worse. somehow. maybe it spiders out like cracks in the skin further than it already has. and by lightning scar i also mean like actual lightning. not that shitty little ⚡️ something messy and even bigger after the graveyard ("i can touch you now" scene) + scar on forearm from blood sacrifice. 5th year "i must not tell lies". obvi. then a lot of shit happens to harry in 6th/"7th" year that i Do Not Remember woops. whatever happens there = still there.
RON! bestie. bby. im so sorry the movies utterly DESTROYED ur character. he doesn't suffer as much physical damage (still emotional! but) + a lot he does receive isn't caused by magical curse objects physically hurting him. i've got rules for these headcanons you just don't get to know what they are. (directly caused by magical object/curse/cursed object = scar) (indirectly caused by magic or nonmagical encounter = no scar) (<- situational healing magic properties). anyways ron. lots of his injuries are indirectly caused by magic (i.e hit down by chess pieces) this trend gets obliterated past 4th year. ministry of magic showdown. the works. those weird brain jellyfish things that stuck on him all mind zappy + literal zappy. THE FUCKING LOCKET. aw harry, ron, n hermione have matching scars <3 from the locket horcrux. they all wore it right. im sorry rons section isn't as detailed i just know he went through HELL in the last books but I! DO NOT! REMEMBER THOSE! bad jojo. woe is me. FIENDFYRE BURNS. WHAT THE FU-
hermione is a similar case to ron, but actually very little physically happens to her, magical or no. i scoff at this blatant sexism. i'd like to think maybe the polyjuice potion cat hair fiasco of 2nd year may have had some lasting effects (purrhaps some facial scarring from whiskers, marks at her tailbone from the tail) (haha) (see what i did there) (anyways) then we have the removal of an imperfection when they fixed her teeth. more sexism with that btw. but like ron, lots of damage past the 4th book. notably the written "mudblood" scar from bellatrix. i cannot remember what else happens to hermione other than that. guess i'll die '
the end. theres very little point to this tbh i just thought it was interesting. i didn't check my work at all btw. if anythings wrong i. Dont care love u byeeeeee

This is an older writing about the Bite of 83
it probably sucks and is like super innacurate but I don't care I was 13 when I made this
enjoy I guess
___
The little boy sat at a table in the corner of the room, while the other screaming toddlers laughed and played and threw candy at each other’s faces. He said nothing, and tried to make himself as invisible as possible. He clutched his favorite toy in his hands; the muddy yellow bear with a purple bowtie and hat. He looked around at the children, all having fun and running around, except for the older kids, who leaned against the wall and silently stared, as if they were waiting for the right moment. Evan knew he couldn’t go over there; he couldn’t have the older kids ruin his birthday party. He felt silly sitting in the corner away from his own friends, cake, and his favorite characters at the diner. The kids weren’t gathered around the stage; he could probably sneak over and hear the birthday song while the kids weren’t looking. Or he could sit here and stay quiet. He didn’t want to risk anything.
The diner was brightly lit with different colors, with confetti scattered on the black carpet. The tables each had a stand with a pizza box on them; Evan could smell the different flavors from across the one-room dining area. The walls, usually a striped gray, had colorful paper streamers and balloons covering them. The prize counter, actually close to where Evan was sitting, was giving out 1 free prize to every guest, and 2 for the guest of honor. The shelves were stocked with some of the diner’s most popular toys, including the plushies, action figures, off-brand Lego sets from the diner’s official TV show, and a small brown robotic dog with a collar reading “Fetch.” The man at the counter was turned around towards the hidden kitchen, reading a book. At the south end of the area were some of the newest and most popular arcade games, like Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, and Centipede. At the north end was the showtime stage.
Oh, how magical was the stage! There were two characters on stage: a bear and a rabbit, singing side by side,  barely heard over the rowdy children. The bear had a purple button down vest that barely fit over his fat belly, a purple hat and tie, and shining brown eyes. The rabbit had a similar purple vest, one that actually fit, with a red bowtie, whiskers, and green eyes. The rabbit was also holding an acoustic guitar.
Evan stood up from the table he was sitting at and looked around. The older kids were still watching the younger kids, and none of them seemed to be paying attention to him. So Evan decided to take his chances. He crept over tentatively, to the prize counter, and adjusted his golden party hat. “Hello, sir,” he said to the man at the counter, “I’m here to pick my prizes.” The man at the counter turned in his chair to face the boy and smiled. “Hey, Evan,” he whispered, “you don’t have to call me ‘sir,’ you know.” Evan nodded. “Okay, Mr. Emily.” Mr. Emily handed Evan his two free prize tickets. “Call me Henry,” he said.
“Okay, Henry,” Evan almost whispered. “Can I have the green bunny? The robotic one?” Henry picked a box off the top shelf. It read: “Plushtrap Chaser! Walks in the dark, freezes in the light!” He handed it to the boy. “Here you are,” he chuckled. “Try not to turn it on inside the restaurant, okay? The different colored lights will mess with the sensors.” Evan handed Henry one of his tickets and crept back over to the table where he had been sitting before. He clutched the fresh new toy in his hands. The kids had all gone to play arcade games, even the older ones. Evan thought he could get away with walking over to the stage and watching the animals sing. So he walked over, carefully avoiding the group. He could see Henry calling someone over at the prize counter as he moved.
The stage was brightly lit, and the characters were dancing and singing some nursery rhymes. To an adult, the songs would seem boring and the robots creepy, but to a child like Evan, it was magical. It was like stepping into another world, one where bears were friendly with no sharp teeth and didn’t pop out from under your bed. Where foxes could be pirates and be heroic enough to have movies made about them. Where birds ate pizza and had talking cupcakes for best friends. Where the robot bunny rabbit your dad made was a better parent than him. Evan zoned out for a while, holding his yellow bear toy, watching the duo on stage. They sang a few songs, then talked for a while, then sang a few more songs. Evan was mesmerized. Until he heard 4 pairs of footsteps from behind.
Someone tapped his shoulder. “Hey, loser,” a voice called, “Turn around! We just want to wish you a happy birthday…” Evan pretended not to hear them. He held his toy tighter and forced back tears. “Turn around,” the voice pleaded sarcastically, “turn around and say hi to your older brother, why don’t you?” Evan still didn’t budge. His brother grabbed his shoulders and whirled him around.
The four older kids were each wearing character masks; a brown bear, a purple rabbit, a yellow bird, and a red fox with an eyepatch. Evan recognized them; his older brother, Mike, and his brother’s three friends. “Happy birthday, little brother,” his brother cackled. “Come on, we have a gift for you!” Evan could feel a few tears begin to run down his face. “Mike, stop,” he tried to yell, but it ended up coming out squeaky. “Stop it or I’ll tell dad!” Mike and his friends laughed. “Wow, your brother’s such a crybaby, isn’t he?,” the boy in the rabbit mask asked.  Mike laughed. “Yeah, it’s hilarious! Why don’t we help him get over his little fears? Let’s help him get up close and personal!”
As he said this, the four hoisted Evan over his shoulders, like a king. “All hail the birthday boy, haha!,” one of them said. They started to walk closer to the stage. “Put me down,” Evan pleaded. But they persisted. “You heard the little man,” Mike laughed. “He wants to get even closer!” They all laughed, and Evan dropped the toy he was holding. It started at him from where it sat on the floor. “Boys,” Henry shouted at them, “Put that poor boy down! Micheal, your father will hear about this!” Mike laughed. “Oh, let him come,” he whined, “He’s not gonna do anything. Now, let’s have the little man give Fredbear a big kiss!” They were in front of the stage now. Evan’s forehead was greased in cold sweat and tears ran down his face. The bear, which had once brought him so much joy with its goofy smile, now had the grimace of a hungry monster, intent on eating him alive. The 4 older kids lifted him higher. “On three,” one of them shouted, “One, two, three!”
They fit Evan’s head into the jaws of the animatronic bear. Evan could hear the kids laughing at him. A dull pain was on both sides of his head. Motors whirred and an error message came from the bear’s voice box. Henry ran toward the stage, shouting words Evan couldn’t hear. Evan heard a sickening crunch, and a new searing pain formed all over his head. He could feel blood gush from his forehead and fill his mouth. He heard the laughter from the kids in the diner turn into horrible screams. He felt all of it for a moment, before the cold claws of inescapable death gripped his throat and dragged him away into darkness.

FoxTown, Chapter Two
Tanjiro is stuck in the Blizzard with an odd fox
Word count: 5,100
The first thing Tanjiro noticed as his eyes fluttered open was how he was curled up into a ball. The last thing he remembered was slipping off the edge of a cliff and plummeting to what he had assumed was his death.
The second thing he realized, following that thought, was how comfortably warm he was.
He blinked the sleep away and slowly lifted his head to look around, it was a burrow of some kind. He could smell the wet dirt and tree roots, signs of being underground. Above him, over a lip in the ground he could hear the heavy winds howling and every now again catch bits of snow that fell in from the blizzard.
Ah so he hadn't made it home… but hadn't died either so where was he?
Tanjiro felt movement all around him and, with panic, realized something was nuzzling itself right into his stomach. His head snapped down and he not only realized he was not in his fox form anymore, but his Racoon dog, but another fox was wrapped completely around him. It was huge in relation to him and had fur so thick Tanjiro watched his paws vanish right into what he thought was its stomach. It was beautiful to say the least, rather than orange its fur was a lovely shade of yellow and the darker part of its paws, ears and tails were more of a crimson than a dark brown.
That was another thing:
Shocking him even more than the golden cloud wrapping itself around him was the three tails it was using as a pillow for itself. And Tanjiro realized he too had been using those glorious soft appendages to rest his head.
Suddenly everything felt too intimate, this fox was wrapped protectively around him and it kept him wonderfully warm- but he had no idea who this was or even if it was a person! Why hadn't it tried to eat him?
Did it save him?!
The one thing that kept him from going into a full panic was the scent wafting off the fox. He smelled like smokey maple leaves, like a campfire fire of said leaves that someone had just put out (he was a male by the smell of him too). It was oddly calming.
Once the initial panic was gone, Tanjiro really stared at this creature. He was beautiful, his eyes were closed and his breathing would blow around the soft fur of one of his tails. He had whiskers on his muzzle and it took everything in Tanjiro not to bat at them. His coat, while exceptionally thick, was glossy and well kept, obviously a fox that cared about his appearance. And it was incredibly soft.
He kind of wanted to feel it again.
Tanjiro adjusted himself and slowly lowered his head down to gently lay his jaw on the foxes side. He moved, making Tanjiro panic again, his fur ruffling in a wave as he felt himself shift back into the fox-like form out of fear of being caught. He watched a golden head lift itself up and its maw opened as he let out a long and heavy yawn. Giving Tanjiro the chance to see all of his sharp teeth: clean, well kept and perfectly capable of ripping things apart.
Then he opened his eyes and Tanjiro swore he stole his breath away. Heavy lidded and cloudy with sleep the fox looked at him with gold and red eyes. Even when half awake and darkened by their stormy surroundings they glittered like a fire was behind them. Foxes really weren't what everyone had made them out to be.
Something inside Tanjiro fluttered as they stared at one another quietly.
And then whatever mood they had was broken as the fox, in an instant, went from bleary eyed and barely aware; to alert, wide eyed and puffed up.
"Hello!"
And loud. So very loud.
"H-hello!?" Tanjiro mimicked his volume out of confusion more than anything.
Giving a response at all seemed to make the other fox happy though as he felt one of the tails wiggle. Tanjiro assumed he was resisting a full wag.
"Are you alright?" The fox asked, suddenly leaning forward to sniff at Tanjiro. If he was human the tanuki would have flushed darkly. "You took quite the fall!"
"F-fall?" Right, the cliff, he fell off a cliff. But something was alarming Tanjiro. "You were watching me!?"
"I was!" The fox sounded completely unashamed! "I saw you come into the woods, which I thought was strange because of the oncoming storm! So I followed you!"
Ah- so then that scent he was picking up the entire time belonged to him. Tanjiro did feel a little relieved, it could have been so much worse.
"So you… saved me?" He asked curiously.
"In a way!"
"What does that mean?"
The fox seemed to smile at him. "You hit the ground, I couldn't catch you or anything. But you seem to have a very hard head because you didn't die! How lucky! I took a safer route down and found you, then dragged here into this burrow to wait out the storm with you!"
Tanjiro blinked a couple of times as he mentally chewed on the words. He really wouldn't be making it back home anytime soon… the other thing he realized though was he had greatly inconvenienced this stranger.
"P-please forgive me!" He suddenly blurted.
"What for?"
"You're stuck here with me now instead of your own home! If I hadn't gone out to hunt at such a foolish time then you wouldn't have noticed and waited with me…"
Red and gold eyes blinked a few times before the fox laughed, a real fox laugh; it was loud and a little more high pitched than his voice. It was almost like he was giggling. Regardless, it brought back that fluttery feeling in the tanuki's chest.
"You are very kind, my boy!"
Oh the nickname intensified his emotions way too much.
"I like that!"
It's getting worse-
"But I do not mind! We are alive and that's the important thing, waiting in a storm is not a problem for me! I do hope you are comfortable though. I grew an especially nice winter coat this year so I hope it kept you warm as well!"
And now Tanjuro was burying his snout into that warm fluffy coat, completely embarrassed and maybe a little smitten over the genuine personality this fox seemed to have. He really was nothing like all the stories Tanjiro has heard over the years. The foxes his elders described would have probably eaten him in this hole while he was still unconscious. But this golden furred male had only been concerned with keeping him warm and out of the snow, even waiting it out with him.
His heart could burst from his chest from how intensely it was pounding. Is this what a crush felt like, wasn't he too old to develop something like that so quickly!?
"Are you alright my boy?" The fox's voice was thick with concern as he watched Tanjiro with wide eyes.
"Tanjiro."
"I beg your pardon?"
The tanuki's head shot up, cheeks puffed comically, well as best as his muzzle could.
"My name is Kamado Tanjiro! It's nice to meet you, if we're going to be stuck here for a while we might as well get to know one another."
Another wide eyed stare, smile in place and then he was giving that excited fox giggle again. "Rengoku Kyojuro!"
Now that Tanjiro had a name to the face it became a little easier to talk to him, especially since the two would be snuggling together for warmth in their little fox hole for quite a while.
A long….
Long while.
At first it was fine, Tanjiro had no problem spending time with Rengoku. In fact it was nice! They mostly chatted back and forth in between bits of napping or dosing.
Tanjiro learned that Kyojuro was the eldest son of two, the younger brother being named Senjuro.
"My mother only had one kit per litter, she's quite fragile you see, so it was a blessing in disguise. You might actually like her, she's a cross fox like you! But she's silver rather than red…"
His father was also an important figure in FoxTown, having nine tails! Tanjiro asked him if it was possible for Rengoku to grow that mainy tails too and he got another laugh, something Tanjiro was quickly getting addicted to.
"Well of course! All foxes are capable of growing more tails! It comes with power, the stronger you get, the more tails you have!" And this fox had three!
Rengoku tilted his head. "Did you not know that?"
Tanjiro froze up for a moment, his tail that had been wagging along with their pleasant conversation bushed up and froze in an upright position.
"O-oh well uh… no…"
"Really?" The fox looked genuinely surprised.
"I, uh, grew up different." Luckily it wasn't a lie, compared to a fox he really did have a different upbringing.
Rengoku waited to see if he would expand upon his statement, but when he didn't he gave a simple and curt: "I see!"
There was some awkward silence before
Tanjiro asked him more about his family and Rengoku seemed happy to talk about them. As he rambled Tanjiro wondered if he should even try talking about his own. Would Rengoku eat him or be less friendly if he learned Tanjiro wasn't actually a fox? He didn't like either of those ideas.
What he was comfortable talking about was his earrings and how they were an important gift to him. He also talked about simple mundane things; like how his favorite food was rice balls, and how he enjoyed sun bathing. He brought up the hardness of his head again when Rengoku asked if it hurt at all from his fall.
"It feels fine, really! I hit others with it all the time!" And he quickly had to clarify that when Rengoku looked alarmed.
Eventually Tanjiro's eyes slid closed, the cold air and likely nightfall was dragging him into a dazed state. When Rengoku noticed he readjusted them slightly so the pair of them were once again comfortably wrapped around one another, each of their heads resting on the other's tail(s). Tanjiro, whether he realized it or not, took a deep inhale of that pleasant smoky scent as he drifted away into a dream.
As the blizzard went on day three though the pair of them were starting to get concerned, not only were they both hungry but Tanjiro was struggling more to stay awake. In this dark and cramped space his instincts were trying to drag him down in hibernation, something he could not let happen. Not just because he wouldn't be able to maintain his fox facade but because he would likely die like that. He hadn't properly fattened himself up to take such a long sleep, he couldn't take the risk.
But staying awake was getting harder and harder. And when he did take short naps Rengoku was struggling to wake him up at times, at one point having to nip the tanuki's ear to get him to awaken. Maybe it was a stroke of luck that Rengoku just assumed Tanjiro was sick, though he couldn't deny the guilt he felt.
Currently the younger of the two was curled up at the back of their makeshift burrow and the older was stretched up to peek out the entrance and watch the storm. He was very quiet and although Tanjiro couldn't see his face he could tell how serious he was because of how his scent had changed.
"I am going to go outside."
Tanjiro's eyes snapped open at the sudden declaration. "What?!"
"The storm appears to be lightening up, and we cannot wait any longer for food." He turned his head to look at his sleepy companion. "You especially, I worry for your health."
"I appreciate your concern Rengoku but what about you, you couldn't see two feet in front of your nose!" Tanjiro tried to get up but the cramped space combined with his weak legs just kind of had him flopping around. He didn't complain though when the fox came over to nuzzle him back into a more comfortable position.
"I will be alright, my boy. I have done this before!" He looked like he wanted to tell a story but held it in. "We need to eat, it would be a shame for you to have survived your fall just to die of hunger!"
Tanjiros expression remained in his determined pout. And the fox let out a soft throaty chuckle.
"Truly, I appreciate you caring about me!" He leaned down and rubbed his cheek against Tanjiro's, rubbing his scent into his fur and the other calmed down. The red and black fur of his back slowly laid flat as he laid his head back down. "But we need the food… I promise I am strong, I have three tails after all!"
Unfortunately that did little to ease Tanjiro's mind as he knew next to nothing about fox… anything. He did nothing but let out a soft whine as Rengoku slipped out of the fox hole quickly, his red and yellow coat vanished almost instantly in the blizzard.
The redhead managed to stay awake just a little longer before sleep once again claimed him.
Tanjiro had no idea how long he had been asleep for. He had faded in and out a few times, waking briefly when he thought he heard the sound of Rengoku returning but when he didn't see the gold and red fur through his fuzzy vision he would slip back into unconsciousness.
He dreamed of his family, they were all huddled together by the fire, their mother holding them close as she did her best to wrap her fluffy tail around the smaller pups. He saw Rokuta's mouth move but he couldn't hear anything over the deafening roar of the snow storm outside. Tanjiro wanted to move closer but he was froze in place when he saw the frightened and gloomy looks his family held. He wasn't there with them-
Not only were they probably terrified of the blizzard but one of their own family members hadn't come home. And if Zenitsu had done his job and told Nezuko where he had been going…
Only terrible thoughts must have been plaguing their minds.
"Mother-" Tanjiro tried to reach for them, no matter how far he moved and stepped closer though his family only got farther and farther away. "Mother- mother-! Nezuko!"
Something warm suddenly swiped across his eyes and he jolted, head lifting and swaying from his half awake state. There was a pause as he tried to get his bearings on reality, and then he felt it again; something warm and wet was rubbing at his eyes and cheeks.
He felt himself bristle and jump up as his eyes snapped open in alarm.
In front of him was Rengoku, his coat was covered in a fine powder and he was staring at Tanjiro with wide eyes. His ears were flat against his head, a sign of worry in Tanjiro's eyes, but what the tanuki noticed above all else was the little pink tongue sticking out of his mouth.
"Were you grooming me?" Tanjiro asked dumbly.
"You were crying!" Rengoku told him after his tongue swiped over his lips. Tanjiro did not miss the flecks of blood on his muzzle. "Were you having a nightmare?"
"Uh… yeah." One of Tanjiro's paws quickly swiped over his face.
"Was it about your family?"
Red eyes glanced into glowing gold/red as Tanjiro said nothing.
"I'm sure they're alright!" Rengoku didn't falter though, he even looked chipper despite having spent who knows how much time in the blizzard. "And you will be returned to them quickly!"
His words were meant to reassure Tanjiro but the dream had left him with more guilt and stress than he would have liked. So it didn't do much.
"Anyway-" the fox turned around and then a moment later a fat mouse was dropped right onto Tanjiro's paws.
"WOAH-" The tanuki flailed and slapped the dead creature away so intensely it bounced right back at Rengoku, who caught it in his mouth.
Tanjuro must have looked like a cotton ball with how puffed up all of his fur was, he breathed heavily from the sudden adrenaline and had pressed himself against the wall. Normally Tanjiro just ate fish, saving the other morsels for his growing siblings, mice were different though. He had long since decided to never eat mice after befriending Zenitsu, sometimes all he could see was the blonde boy now when he watched the small critters scamper about in the brush. So having a dead one suddenly dropped into his paws was jarring.
Rengoku clearly didn't seem to understand the issue because the only reaction Tanjiro got out of him was a confused head tilt, his big fluffy ears flopping to one side adorably.
"I-I dont eat mice."
"Mph!" A look of understanding crossed the foxes face and he put his fresh kill down. "That is unfortunate! This is all I could find!"
Tanjiro's stomach dropped, both from dread and hunger. "Oh…"
"I am sorry, my boy," Rengoku looked sympathetic, even as one of his paws lightly bated the mouse around like a toy. "There are no fruits in this season, and mice are the easiest to find in the snow! So…" his voice trailed away as he stopped playing and slowly pushed the morsel towards the Tanuki.
Tanjiro swallowed. "Was there really nothing else…" he could already feel the spirit of Zenitsu giving him a hard time over his shoulder.
"Nothing at all!"
How was it that Rengoku could make anything sound exciting?
Tanjiro let out a small whine, making Rengoku's ears twitch, before he slowly leaned down towards the creature.
He sniffed at it a few times, glanced up at his companion who looked a little too excited to see him eat it, and finally decided to just get it over with. Zenitsu didn't have to know.
It was the most delicious thing Tanjiro had eaten all week and the full belly immediately fueled his drowsiness again. Rengoku must have sensed the oncoming sleeping spell because he made quick work of cleaning himself up and then wrapped his fluffy body around the smaller tanuki again, settling them both in.
"You don't have to keep doing that." Tanjiro said through a yawn. "It's a little weird to be snuggling like this." His actions betrayed his words though because he was getting himself comfortable against the larger and warmer fox's side.
"I disagree!" Rengoku said cheerily while he watched him. "I think it's good practice."
"Practice..?" Tanjiro was struggling to keep his eyes open, as every second passed his thoughts got more muddled.
"Mh!" He felt Rengoku's side hum with the noise. "For when I bring you home!"
Tanjiro didn't catch that last part, sleep having already claimed him.
That morning the storm had finally stopped. Two fox heads burst from a snow covered hillside, their heads shaking off the extra powder and looking around curiously to make sure all was clear before they quickly scrambled out into the open air.
"Ah finally!" Tanjiro frolicked in the snow for a moment, his little fox body bouncing around excitedly before rolling a few times- shifting half way into a human and laying out like a starfish in the snow. "My legs needed this stretch!" He stretched this way and that, not even caring for the cold bite on his skin. Never had he been in any other form for so long, it had left his joints feeling stiff and he was more than happy to twist this way and that in a languid stretch. "Feels sooo gooooood~" he was practically purring.
Suddenly a loud and boisterous laugh went off above him and Tanjiro sat up as a body landed right next to him in the snow. "Yes, this does feel quite nice after being stuffed up in that hole for four days!"
Tanjiro looked over and froze. He had suspected Rengoku also had a human form, and sometimes during their down time from chatting he would try to picture it (he was way too embarrassed to outright ask.)
But nothing in his imagination had quite prepared him for the real thing. He had always imagined someone on the thinner side, and well… foxish.
This man was more like a lion.
Rengoku's hair was a perfect match to the golden fur he'd had before but it stuck up and cascaded down his back like a mane. His eyes were the exact same, wide and alert, and he was huge, muscular. His three tails twirled lazily behind him while he nakedly lounged in the snow right next to Tanjiro with a smile on that stupidly handsome face.
"YOUR NAKED!" Tanjiro quickly covered his eyes as he rolled over, ears back and tail fluffed up to its max.
He heard Rengoku laugh loudly behind him. "So are you, my boy!" And then Tanjiro felt a claw lightly draw a line all the way up his back, from the base of his tail to the back of his neck.
He screamed, sending all the birds that had come out to explore fearfully into the air.
Tanjiro put great distance between him and Rengoku. He clutched his tail and breathed heavily with a blush so intense it made his face look like a tomato.
Rengoku meanwhile had moved into a cross legged sitting position, he had his arms crossed over his chest as it heaved with loud open mouthed laughter. "Did you not realize!? And here I thought you were being a tempting Vixen~"
"I wasn't tempting anyone!" Tanjiro shot back at him. "Aren't you cold!?"
"Not at all! I run very warm naturally, my family is special that way!" To prove his point Rengoku lunged, earning a new sound out of Tanjiro but it quickly died down as he felt the warmth radiating from the other man's body. It genuinely shocked him to the point he was putting his palms right against the blonde's chest.
"How are you so warm!?"
Rengoku's smile somehow widened as he puffed his chest, proud at how he had impressed the boy. "My family is related to Inari Foxes! Not only are we incredibly warm but we can also hold our Alcohol better than any other! It is also why our hair is the way that it is." One of his hands came up to tug at the red and yellow strands that framed his face.
"Th-thats…" Tanjiro was wide eyed. He had never done anything special in his life, he was just a common tanuki, and yet here he was casually spending time with the descendant of a fox that served a god!
"Can you conjure clothing?" Rengoku asked suddenly, breaking the boy from his bewildered thoughts.
"What- uh-" what did that mean, just make clothing from thin air? Could fox's do that?! As a tanuki he could shift his physical form but as far as he knew that didn't apply to clothing-!
"I thought so." Rengoku stood up, taking Tanjiro with him and planting the boy on his feet. "Give me just a moment."
Tanjiro watched the man bend down and grab fistfuls of snow, forming a large mound before he grabbed it and yanked what looked like a Yukata out of the ground.
Tanjiro gaped wide eyed as he did this several times, making Hakama pants and Haori in lavish red, yellow and white patterns.
"Here you are!" The fox smiled widely as he offered the new and fresh bundle of clothing to him.
"How did you do that?" Tanjiro's arms felt like they were on autopilot as he took them, all his attention was on that bright smiling face as it tilted to the side.
"I made them. They're Just temporary though!" Rengoku wrapped his own clothing around himself and tied off the sash to keep his pants up. He adjusted his collar as he spoke. "As long as I focus on my breathing they should hold up till we get back!"
Tanjiro stopped as he tied his own sash. "Back? Back where?"
Rengoku turned to him. "To FoxTown!"
The boy went pale. He couldn't go to FoxTown, he had to get home! It's been four days already and his family had to be worried sick about him!
"I-I don't live in FoxTown!" He blurted suddenly.
Rengoku's thick eyebrows went up, the only indication of his surprise. "Is that so? Where do you live then, I shall escort you home!"
"No that's okay I'm sure I can find the way-"
"I doubt that!" Rengoku's smile never left his face as he crossed his arms. "The snow will have covered all the paths and tracks! Plus it will be dangerous! It is best I guide you!"
Tanjiro let out a low whine. He didn't want this fox following him all the way back to his family burrow, sure he had been wonderful company during the blizzard but everyone in town would run screaming if they saw him coming.
"J-just down the mountain." Tanjiro insisted.
"You don't live on the mountain?" Rengoku looked more surprised, but his smile never faltered.
"I told you, I'm different."
"Very much so."
The two stared at one another before Tanjiro stepped aside and made a small gesture for him to lead the way.
Rengoku's tails flicked around for a brief moment, as if he was thinking, before they settled against his back and he began his walk, long legs leaving a ditch in the snow for Tanjiro to follow in.
He wasn't wrong about the snow covering up everything. Tanjiro had no idea where he was because every direction he turned in it was all white; white ground, white trees, white sky even as clouds still lingered heavily in the air from the storm.
He had no idea which way he should be going, it was hard enough to see the slope of the mountain with everything being the same shade of white.
And twice Tanjiro almost tripped over himself because of a hidden root or large rock within the snow.
Luckily Rengoku seemed patient with him even as he ran into his back each time. He must not have minded because his tails happily curled around Tanjiro, like he was hugging him and the soft caresses brought small laughter from within his chest.
He actually had reached out to grab hold of one as they walked, petting the soft fur and studying its colors as he was led through the woods. He was glad Rengoku didn't seem to mind.
"Oh dear."
"Hmf?" Tanjiro, too engrossed in the fluffy fur within his hands, didn't realize Rengoku had completely stopped walking and once again bumped into him. "Ah sorry- what is it?"
Rengoku didn't need to answer his question. As Tanjiro leaned around the fox's larger frame his mouth fell open as he saw what had stopped them.
"This isn't good at all." Rengoku's smile has dropped away now.
Before them was a massive wall of rubble, whole fallen trees, compacted snow and ice. Some of which took on the shape of spears as they stuck up in several directions.
"Wh-what is this!?" Tanjiro didn't remember seeing this on his way up the mountain! His head whipped from side to side, as far as the eye could see all Tanjiro was greeted with was the same wall. "Was there an avalanche?"
Rengoku didn't say anything at first, he approached the wall and reached out to grab hold of one of the spears, as thick as his arm, and in one swift motion broke it off and looked it over.
"No, these are not made naturally." The man tilted the object in his hand before his eyebrows furrowed and he melted it away, palms glowing brightly from the heat.
"What is it…?" Tanjiro asked nervously.
There was no response and Tanjiro felt fear rise up to grip his chest. Just when he thought it would kill him, Rengoku spun around, expression normal again. "A Yuki Oona has likely moved into the area!"
"Yuki Oona?" Tanjiro hadn't heard of that before.
"A snow woman! They eat anything that is alive, sucking out your soul and such."
The way Rengoku said all of that with a smile chilled Tanjiro more than the snow around him.
"So then…?"
"We turn around!"
"What!?" Tanjiro's tail bushed out in alarm. "But I have to go home!"
"It will have to wait!" Rengoku held up a finger to halt Tanjiro from objecting again. The tanuki also took this moment to realize how sharp Rengoku's claws were. "This is very bad, I am not strong enough to fight off another spirit right now. I am at my limit with just our clothing because of the time spent in that blizzard." Guilt joined the fear in Tanjiro as he once again made himself a burden on this man. "We will return to FoxTown. It is the closest settlement, and my home! I will inform the elders of this trespasser on our mountain and we shall go from there. So long as this wall is here, we cannot proceed."
His words sank in slowly, and it was obvious how much it disappointed Tanjiro. His shoulders sagged, tail drooped and ears fell flat against his burgundy hair as his face slowly tilted down. He hadn't even blinked as he wondered when he would be able to get home to his family. They would surely begin to think he had died…
"My boy." A warm hand laid on his shoulder and Tanjiro slowly looked up.
Rengoku was smiling down at him, it was warm and made the corners of his eyes crinkle. "It will be okay."
All Tanjiro could do was nod numbly. He couldn't exactly fight back on Rengoku's decision, this was his territory after all, he knew what was best in the worst situations. But that did not stop the awful feelings gnawing at Tanjiros gut.
The fox leaned down to nudge their cheeks together. While oddly intimate, Tanjiro appreciated his attempt to comfort him.
He let Rengoku turn him around and use a palm against his back to lead him back the way they had come.
Tanjiro glanced back at the wall just once before he had to put all his focus on once again climbing the mountain.

MerMay is HERE!!!
Tumblr media
What would the Neighbors look like as merfolk? Well, after plenty of research (thank you Wiki, many fishing sites, & relatives irl), here's my take on that in alphabetical order.
🐶🐟Barnaby B. Beagle: Atlantic Spiny Dogfish. Okay, okay, this was an automatic choice just because of the name. Although, two venomous spines, can grow up to 4' (4 feet), often seen hunting prey in dog-like packs (hence the dog-like name), tends to feed primarily on crustaceans, jellyfish, squid, &/or schooling fish. Cod, red hake, goosefish, other spiny dogfish, larger sharks, seals, & killer whales all prey on dogfish. Dogfish also have a habit of getting caught in fishing nets due to their size, often resulting in bycatch (n. the unwanted fish and other marine creatures caught during commercial fishing for a different species). Now, clearly, Barnaby will be the same size as in his bio, same colors to as is the case with everyone else here.
✉️🐟Eddie Dear: Common (freshwater) Carp. These guys are all over the place where I go fishing/crabbing, make for good eating, too. What they do is root around soft sediment They usually feed on aquatic plants, worms, zooplankton, & other small animals found in the deposits. Their rooting upsets the water's bed & degrades their habitats by uprooting vegetation and increasing turbidity (cloudiness in the water due to particles). They're native to freshwater lakes & rivers in Eurasia. They were introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as a new sportfish. Now found in 48 U.S. states & most temperate areas around the globe. They typically prefer slow-moving systems with soft muddy/sandy bottoms. Found in most lakes & rivers in Louisiana. They sort of look like massive goldfish that evolved to be tougher for the wild. Somehow, they're often confused with native small/largemouth buffalo [fish]. Generally, they're a sort of golden brown/brassy green color that wanes to a pale yellow/white belly. The silvery variety can be found too, I've just caught the others. Subterminal mouths with two sets of barbels (AKA: "whiskers") off the upper corners of their mouths, large scales. Like most North American fish, they can grow +50 lbs but are more commonly found between 10-20 lbs.
🦋 🐟Frank Frankly: Florida Pompano. The Florida pompano, part of the jack family, is a species of marine fish with a compressed body, short snout & deeply forked tail. Pompano fish often have a color variation of blue, green & yellow on their dorsal areas with silver &/or yellow on their body & fins. I imagine he/they studies butterfly fish instead of actual butterflies. He'll still pop up to the surface to watch actual butterflies flutter around. Most adults of this breed feed on small surf clams, amphipods (I.e. sand-hoppers/beach-fleas, predaceous ghost shrimp, whale ectoparasites Cyamus, etc.), crabs, shrimp & even mussels. If he finds pearls or precious-looking items, he gives them to Eddie or Julie.
🐛🐟Howdy Pillar: Fimbriated Moray Eel. Get it? Because he's got freckles. Huh, huh? Anyways, these eels (aka Gymnothorax fimbriatus/ dark-spotted moray/spot-face moray), are a moray eel of the family Muraenidae, obviously. They're medium-sized moray that can reach a maximum length of 80 centimeters (31 in), though Howdy would be bigger (+8ft, maybe). Its serpentine-shaped body has a white-cream to light brown background color dotted with numerous dark spots which latter vary in size and shape depending on the individual & maturity. It has a tapered snout, is greenish-yellow with black dots, the corners of the mouth are white, & a very boop-worthy snout tip. He does the same things in his OG counterpart's way but with fish-based needs; worms, fallen crates of goods, fish filets from seemingly nonsentient fish, & so on. Wally is far more slippery, so plucking a chosen item is easier in Mer!form than bing bipedal. Howdy is an eel, so hunting isn't much of a challenge for him.
🌈🐠Julie Joyful: The Lybia Tessellata (commonly named "Pom-pom/Cheerleader/Boxer crab") comes from its symbiotic exercise of brandishing a stinging sea anemone (usually Triactis producta) in each of its claws to fend off predators & possibly to stun prey. Its "boxer crab" title comes from its bellicose reaction to threats. Something about this just fits...
🐔🐳Poppy Partridge: There are a lot of fish in the ocean, like birds in a tree. The chicken could be tuna (chicken of the sea), that much I know. Maybe a little parrot fish for color? Grouper for size? I can't find anything for her.
🌟🐠Sally Starlet: I'll be honest here, I was going to automatically pick a default starfish to go here, but then is kept digging. I'm stuck between a Lion Fish & a Manderinfish. Surprise, surprise, I can't pick. Maybe both with a touch of Flame Angel Fish for color?
😘🐟Wally Darling/Home: Yellowhead Jawfish (AKA; Opistognathus aurifrons) these little darlings [pun intended] are usually seen in undersized colonies around sandy &/or rubble-coated areas near reefs. Their lairs, smallish architectural phenomena, are created by excavating holes and lining them with rocks & shells for support - all done with their mouths. Obviously, Darling is half humanoid so he could use his hands here. Still, it's an interesting idea for him to be the one who builds Home. 🤔
These are just my thoughts on what they'd look like fish-wise. I'll need more time to pick & choose what other traits they'll each keep or lose. Feel free to use this as a sort of prompt or muse material 🤗!

Tell Me
Silence
Noun
Complete absence of sound.
Except, that wasn’t true for this situation.
The two rivals did sit in silence, but that only applied for them. As for the rest of the world? No, no it didn’t. The bonfire crackled before them, and nature around them made noise too, the crickets mainly. The small sounds of shifting, and other things, before suddenly it was broken by a loud snore instantly getting the duo’s attention as they snapped their heads to look over to the ex-security guard DJ with an arm around Kate, snoring loudly. Daffy let out a small breath of relief before he heard the fire crackle more and a roasted carrot was brought up in front of his bill a second time that night.
“You sure you don’t want one?”
“No, like I said the first time, Bugsth.”
He said, before falling back into silence.
There was almost a tension in the air, both able to sense it, mainly Daffy who clasped his hands together resting his arms on his knees, hunched towards the fire. His hands shaking a bit, the raven feathered duck staring intently at the fire now. As he swallowed a bit, before his eyes flicked to the rabbit, teal locked with gold.
Bugs really was the perfect guy…funny, charismatic, just a bit cocky, and overall charitable. His golden eyes, like drops of honey, swirling with color and entrapping. He could get lost in them and at this rate? He already was, at least until Bugs cleared his throat awkwardly, Daffy in turn snapping out of it and backing up slightly from when his body had apparently shifted to lean towards Bugs. He looked away feeling his face heat up a bit, before shaking it off. As he turned back to the rabbit who gave him a confused look. The duck finally deciding to break the silence between the two of them
“..Bugsth?”
“..yes?”
“How..?”
He asked quietly, which wasn’t usual for the loud mouth Daffy was known as. Even surprising Bugs, who earlier that night recalled their conversation, noting specifically that..well to put it simply, Daffy had reached out to him and was extremely vulnerable, no hidden intentions, no sarcasm. Just as quiet as he was now. Though they didn’t get anywhere with it because Bugs Bunny, despite everything that he was written as, wasn’t emotional. At least not in the serious way like their rival company. Usually most conflict was solved by dropping an anvil on the other, or a pie to the face, something the audience would laugh at, that Bugs would laugh at, but he knew deep down, that wasn’t what Daffy needed from him.
After all..they were best friends.
So, hesitantly, he replied.
“Eh, what do you mean ‘How’?”
He asked, cringing at how almost dismissive and genuinely confused he sounded. He didn’t bother looking at Daffy when he did reply, after all this was brand new territory for Bugs, he wasn’t meant to be..like this.
He wasn’t meant to be vulnerable.
After a couple minutes he heard a small scoff, presumably from Daffy. The duck seemingly not happy about his response, as if Bugs was just that uncaring and unbothered.
“I mean, the conversation we just had, bucktooth.” He spat, his anger clear in his voice before he calmed down and ran hand through his hair.
Frustrated, Daffy stood up and walked off to a nearby canyon wall, pacing next to it, before leaning against it and crossing his arms, huffing. Bugs got up and followed him, after taking his roasted carrot off the stick he put it on, walking over, carrot in hand as he took a bite from it, leaning next to Daffy, facing him.
“The conversation about..?”
“You should know.”
The duck snapped at him, looking towards him again.
“Warner brothers?”
There was another silence, if only for a few minutes before Daffy grabbed that stupid carrot away from the rabbit and threw it as far as he could into the desert and before Bugs could even make a comment, the toon grabbed him by his arms and shoved him against the canyon wall angrily, as he glared at Bugs. His body was shaking as he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“N-NO! GOD- g-god no! It’s not about them!”
He yelled out, desperately.
His eyes wide now as they looked panicked, hurt, and genuinely taken aback. Causing the bunny to go dead quiet watching him, his whiskers tangled and eyes wide too.
“I-it’s about me! About you!—US.”
He cried out shaking him a bit
“Daff-“
“You don’t get it, do you?! I have been working my whole life to get to the top! I have done everything you did and better!”
The Duck said, voice breaking slightly, unbeknownst to him, the two humans sleeping nearby, waking up to see them, as they watched holding their breath.
“Everything those damn executives have ever asked of me, I’ve done! I played the role of the villain, I played the role of the dumb rival to the great Bugsth Bunny! I did E-EVERYTHING!”
He yelled louder, letting go of Bugs arms and pressing a finger to his chest.
“I know my role! But does the audience care? No! Because you’re the hero, you’re the good guy that everyone cheers for! I’m all bam! Wham! Ka-POW!”
He said smacking himself on the head, as stars flew around it.
“I’d rather work for that rat over at Disney than deal with this!”
He growled, right up in Bugs face.
Bugs backing up further against the wall, watching Daffy and although he was taller he felt a thousand times smaller.
“D-Daff..it’s..”
“Don’t say it isn’t true. Don’t lie to my face rabbit!”
Bugs felt his heart pounding crazily, his breath hitching, watching Daffy yell, it wasn’t like all those times before when they argued and then they did something funny, this was raw anger. This was..reality, it wasn’t an act and of course he knew this, he knew it the moment Daffy snapped. It just,, was a lot to take in.
Daffy upon seeing Bugs expression backed up, quietly as he looked down at his hands which were by his sides in clenched fists.
He frowned, feeling something prick at his eyes, when suddenly, a soft silky hand was put to his shoulder and his eyes flicked up towards the grey bunny.
“Daffy.. I didn’t know you..”
He took a deep breath
“I’m really, truly, sorry.”
The two looked at one another, before Daffy shrugged him off taking a few steps back.
“I’m not coming back to that studio, and I am not dealing with this, I’m gonna get that blue monkey diamond for myself…”
He looked away from Bugs
“See ya around Bugsth.”
He murmured, starting to walk off, before in one swift motion Bugs grabbed his wrist, stopping Daffy.
“Daffy.”
The duck turned to look at him and the moment he did, regret filled him because the rabbit was tearing up slightly, and of course it could’ve been an act, they were actors, but it just felt different. He watched Bugs, holding his breath, the Rabbit sniffling slightly.
“Tell me you didn’t have at least one good memory.”
He said looking to him, which in turn made the Duck look away, before Bugs got closer.
“Daffy.”
He repeated, his voice wavering as the Duck turned back again, Bugs only a few inches away. Daffy swallowed, his face heating up a bit.
The two just a few inches apart, staring. Kate and Dj looking at them, as they watched Bugs get closer
“Tell me.”
He repeated once again, his voice breaking slightly.
Daffy looking to him and sighing
“Yeah..I did have one.”
He answered softly, glancing down. Eventually moving to take Bugs’ hand in his as he rubs a thumb over his knuckles blushing more, thankful his feathers were so dark that Bugs couldn’t see. Another hand being placed over his from the grey bunny as the toon glanced up at him, as he looked to their hands again as Bugs’ hand just covered Daffy’s hand.
“…the first time we met. I swear..”
He chuckled softly smiling a tiny bit
“You were brand new and shy. Like incredibly shy and when we shook hands you were shaking from nerves, I had never seen someone so nervous and you even admitted to me..that I was..your hero…me, Daffy Duck..your hero. I was amazed, and flattered.. and it was nice for the time it lasted.”
Bugs listened, and watched Daffy’s body language, the duck having never been this genuine about something. He supposed he forgot after seeing Daffy play his role for so long, that he..wasn’t that type of guy, but because everyone thought he was, he continued playing that role. Daffy had put on a mask..and Bugs finally got to see it come off, he got to see him smile..
Daffy rarely smiled happily.
That smile..was beautiful, it lit up the world in that one moment. It even made Bugs smile a tiny bit too, even despite their situation, however, as soon as it appeared, it was gone. The duck frowning now, the two friends quiet.
Bugs felt terrible, a wave of guilt washing over him, as he considered Daffy’s words, he recalled his movements and his tone, and when he finally realized Daffy was probably going to leave, he didn’t know if he should even bother stopping him, because it was obvious that Bugs Bunny had failed Daffy Duck as a friend. He failed terribly hard and honestly? No amount of apologies could fix this.
But he wanted to so badly.
Because despite everything there was a reason Bugs kept chasing after Daffy when he did anything, there was a reason he always was willing to help him. There was a reason now why Bugs had grabbed him, and was trying to stop him.
There was a reason, He had such a soft spot for Daffy.
Bugs swallowed, as he snapped out of it and locked eyes with the toon. He stepped closer, as close as he could and pulled Daffy into a hug.
The raven feathered bird freezing up in his arms, his arms in turn raising up in surprise as his breath hitched. The duck, not moving.
“B-Bugsth?”
“..I-I’m sorry.”
He said, holding back his tears as he hugged Daffy’s thin frame tighter.
The Duck tensed up, before eventually hugging back as he closed his eyes, tearing up too. The two hugged each other tightly and stayed like that for the rest of the night, unmoving.

Chapter 35 ✷ Picture’s Up
━━━━━━━━━༻☽༺━━━━━━━━━
James couldn't recall a time where he felt so drained.
He didn’t even think there was a word to encapsulate just how drained he really felt. Every day, there was a wariness that sunk and immersed itself so deeply within his bones that made it feel like he could hardly breathe.
Day by day, it felt like a part of his sanity was cracking.
Enervated, drowsy, exhausted, knackered, dead on his own two feet… he could go on.
Prefect duties were as dreadful as Remus had said they were and James regretted every time he ever made fun of him for it. It was miserable and karma never hit him harder. Monitoring detentions and rounds were tedious, the tests he had to grade were mind-numbingly boring; all forcing him to lose the little sleep he had.
And then there were the loads of Quidditch practices that once were fun, a way for him to exert his remarkable supply of energy, only became a bit of a nuisance with the overwhelming activities he was forced to juggle.
Working around Moony’s moon cycle...
And then there was the fucking Black family.
The mere mention of their names sent James into a spiral. He’d rather submerge himself into the Black lake and let the giant squid ink all over him than deal with them. But there he was.
He debated for a while, whether or not to tell Black about Regulus but refrained. He was far too stubborn to listen and could make matters worse.
James sighed, leaning into the couch in the common room, running his fingers through his hair.
“Potter.” The ring of Lily’s voice sounded through his ears. James turned around to look at her, feeling his heart accelerate.
“Evans,” he greeted.
“We have rounds in a bit. Don’t be late.”
James simply nodded, not having enough energy to put on a front.
And of course Lily noticed. She noticed his frazzled appearance and lack of energy. There was hardly any banter between them and Lily would’ve thought it was a miracle that his annoying self had vanished, replaced with timorous energy. But if anything, it was disquieting.
She bit the inside of her cheek, forcing out, “Hey, you alright?”
He gave a little audible sound in response. “Yeah. I’ll be there. I just need to make a few arrangements quickly. Meet you by the... Prefects’ bathroom?”
Lily considered him.
“... See you.”
James made his way out of the common room, slipping out the Marauder’s Map. He’d been tracking Regulus’ movements for the past few days now and the only person he went to was Y/N for any substantial amount of time.
He truly had no one else and it ruled out any potential bullying.
Walburga and Orion… Their treatment towards him shocked James. Golden boy Regulus, who would’ve thought?
But even with the Marauder’s Map, it was impossible to keep track of him. He never stayed in one spot long enough to catch, aside from the dungeons and Slytherin common room.
Everything regarding Regulus’ situation forced James to think strenuously. If he were to accidentally say too much of what Whiskers had told him, not only would Regulus close himself off to him, but to her too, leaving them with no clue of his well-being.
And it forced him to worry about Whiskers. She didn’t know what she's getting herself into… What if Walburga and Orion caught word of their friendship?
James shuddered, pushing away the thought. He didn’t want to think about what would happen to either of them.
He continued to watch Regulus’ name travel across the map before ascertaining he was close. He tapped on the map, muttering out ‘Mischief managed’ whilst bolting down the hallways. Each twist and turn exhilarated a nervous adrenaline thumping through his veins as he rehearsed a little speech inside his head.
Before Regulus had time to process what was happening, James had already yanked him back, disappearing into one of the secret passageways.
“What the — Potter?!” He squawked. Pushing him away, James saw the pure panic washed over his features through the shadows.
“I know we don’t have much time,” James rushed, “But hear me out.”
He made no attempt to move but looked around for other students.
“You’ll always have a home with me,” James said easily as if it was the most obvious answer. “With Bla — Sirius — living with me, you’re more than welcome to as well. I understand your situation and —”
“No,” Regulus leered, “I can’t.”
“You can’t or you won’t?” James challenged before easing up. “My family and I are more than willing to protect you, like how we’ve been doing for Sirius.”
And then it stayed silent for a while and he finally let himself take in his appearance.
“Regulus, what happened to you?”
Regulus’ head hung. “All I wanted was to have long hair.”
And then it clicked for James, but he was running out of things to say that were convincing and felt a familiar panic return.
“You miss him, right?” He tried. “I know he misses you. If maybe —”
But when Regulus’ mood suddenly changed, James knew instantly that he had miscalculated.
“Miss me?” Regulus laughed bitterly. “He doesn’t miss me and he has never considered me his brother. You, Lupin, Pettigrew — you’re his brothers.”
He could see the misty tears welding up in Regulus’ eyes and didn’t make a move to stop him when he stormed out from the passageway.
Once Regulus was free from James, he sprinted, blinking multiple times to prevent tears from seeping out. An ache burned inside his chest as he found himself diving into his bed, pulling the curtains shut.
Those unforgettable questions that plagued his mind for a year now played heavily in his mind, like his own personal film.
What made someone good or bad? What did he believe in? Was he strong enough to break from his mould or did he want to? And most importantly, what was he willing to do?
Blood purity…
Regulus closed his eyes. He wished life was a dress rehearsal and there were times to make mistakes and have do-overs without permanent repercussions. To get time to practice and refine life until he explored every avenue. Unfortunately, life had no room for anything but the final performance. Every stumble, every mishap or memory slip was presented to a live audience day by day.
Reopening his eyes, he had his answer.

A few weeks went by and September was coming to a close. October came with beautiful colours and a chilly breeze.
It felt like every day, Y/N added another reason to be disgruntled and hateful onto her list. It had been a month since she’d last seen her mother and she refrained from sending any letters; waiting patiently to see if she would make the first move.
Nothing.
It was safe to say that it put her into a bad mood that morning.
The walk to Defence Against the Dark Arts with Lily was a quiet one and slightly uncomfortable. However, the uncomfortable bit was more on Lily’s end rather than Y/N who was too wrapped in her anger-induced thoughts.
These days, their lessons were almost exclusively in the Duelling room, filled with practical lessons. Especially today, she was beyond thankful for; eager to have an outlet.
But Professor Elway was unusually keen on inviting her to the Duelling sessions. She was almost as difficult as dodging Slughorn’s Slugclub invites. Luckily, Y/N liked Elway and duelling was electrifying. Even potion making, no matter how much she enjoyed it, was lengthy and mundane.
Mentioning their professor, she wasn’t there that morning when they arrived outside the Duelling room. The students lounged outside the door, taking out their books and wand while they waited.
Remus found himself drifting to her as they quietly chatted away.
“Like your sweater,” she said. In the background, she could hear Marlene and James yelling, “It’s a jumper!”
Remus smiled. “This old thing?” Pointing to the sweater that she knitted. They both giggled a bit; Remus leaned slightly against her, eyes lingering a beat.
“Sorry, I’m late!” Elway called out to them in a dreamy voice. “Everyone, follow me!”
Puzzled, the class looked at each other as they followed their professor away from the dungeons. While they walked, rude and unbearable, Peeves the Poltergeist floated upside down. Once he spotted Remus, he immediately drifted up to him, opening his mouth, no doubt about to hurl all sorts of names or songs at him.
Remus hardly looked at him, already taking out his wand and said lazily, “Waddiwasi!” at Peeves.
A wad of gum shot out from nowhere and landed directly on Peeves before he whirled back from Remus, spewing curses at him.
“Nice one! Ought to teach me that later!” “Almost feel bad for the bloke!” Both James and Peter said at the same time.
Elway had led them outside to a desolate area, free from a canopy of branches and leaves.
“Now, my pupils!” She sang. “You might be wondering, ‘what are we doing out here?’ Lucky for you, we’re going to be practicing a few spells and learning how to fight using other means during duels.”
Like most of the class, Emmeline was skeptical as she raised her hand. “I thought we weren’t supposed to use physical means during duels?”
“Precisely,” said Elway, walking back and forth in front of the class. “Couldn't have said it better myself. But you know who won’t give a damn?”
There was a long pause for effect.
“Your enemies.” She clapped her hands together. “Now, can anyone give us some ideas? How about… Miss L/N?”
Blinking a few times, she hesitated, not expecting to be called on. “Er — you can… take them from the legs?”
“Wonderful idea! I’m thrilled you said that! Does anyone else want to add on?”
Remus raised his hand, answering politely. “Using your arms — stretching them.”
Professor Elway nodded away happily. “Wonderful answer! Take five points! Like Remus said, stretching your arms out or boarding your shoulders, spacing out your legs can widen your defence range! Why don’t we try?”
She called Remus up first and Y/N could tell he was slightly nervous. He doubled down, making himself seem smaller by hunching over and made sure not to accidentally hurt their professor.
A couple of Hufflepuffs, Slytherins and then James, Marlene and Lily all tried; mimicking Elway as she let them knock her over.
“Most importantly,” Elway said, dusting off her robes free from leaves and dirt. She panted a bit, tired from being knocked down multiple times. “Never let the enemy strike first. You all did fantastically!
“Obviously, in any professional setting, you’ll be disqualified if you ever tried to physically attack your opponent. But you can still play dirty in a duel!
“The charm Obscuro has been helpful on several occasions. It blindfolds your opponent. Please repeat after me: Ob-SKOO-roh!”
“Obscuro!”
“Excellent!” Elway gave a little applause, filled with glee. “Another spell that I love is the Confundus charm. Y/N! May you please explain to us the purpose of the Confundus charm?”
“She’s calling on you an awful lot,” Lily muttered.
She nodded a bit. “It confuses your oppent. The varying degree depends on how much magic is put into the initial casting.”
“Perfect! Five points to Gryffindor. If you will tell me about Incendio.”
As she spoke, there was almost a switch that went off in Elway that made her incessantly happy that almost unnerved her.
“Beautiful! Now if you may, help demonstrate the spell?”
“I don’t want to hurt —”
“Trust me, you won’t.”
Then, Y/N felt a deep lurch of fear as everyone retreated against the trees, giving her a clear view of Professor Elway opposed to her, waiting to block her spell.
She took a deep breath in, pushing up the sleeves of her robes, she held her wand.
Professor Elway had a protective spell around her. “One, two, three — now!”
“Incendio!” Only meek sparks shot out of her wand. A few students snickered while her friends were seen trying to drown them out by clapping.
“That was amazing!” Peter called out.
“I wouldn’t be able to do that on the first go!” Marlene shouted.
“That was good! Try again! One, two, three — go!”
“Incendio!” Nothing noteworthy happened. It was embarrassing.
“It’s alright, try again!” Elway said, not letting her go yet. “Think about something that’s motivating!”
Y/N closed her eyes, inhaling deeply and pondered. What was motivating to her? Surely, the want to continue with magic after school was motivating. Or perhaps proving someone wrong?
Proving someone wrong…
She had a lot to prove to her mother.
Instead of her being motivated, a flicker of annoyance and anger flooded her instead. Sensing the change, Elway beamed, her wand held high.
“One —”
Her mother always prioritized everyone and everything above her —
“Two —”
Was never there when it mattered —
“Three —”
There was never much affection. The constant want to please, the low self-esteem made her feel worthless, unloveable, always wanting to run when she got too close — she caused it —
“Now!”
“Incendio!” She bellowed.
A loud crack rippled through the air and caused her to stumble back. A large blast of orange and red flames shot out from her wand. Scorching heat flooded out, causing all the students to jump back as Elway shot waves of water, extinguishing the flames at once. As angry as she had been, glee and pure enjoyment replaced that quickly.
Once the bell rang, the students gathered up their belongings, leaving for their next class. But Elway took a moment, calling out her name, asking that she stay back for a few moments.
James and Lily staggered behind, offering to wait as they talked quietly under one of the willow trees.
They were so civil these days…
“I would’ve offered you a cup of tea,” Elway spoke as she approached her. Her foot tapped against the ground, her eyes far-away, thinking thoughtfully with a sly smirk. “Has anyone told you that you would make for an excellent, excellent duellist?”
Her eyebrows raised and shook her head.
That only prompted her teacher to smirk, in a satisfied sort of way. “You’re exceptionally strong for someone with no experience.”
There was a smug tone to Elway’s voice and she couldn’t quite place what she was getting at.
“Did you know that any professional duellist would kill for your wand? Or even the slight edge you have against them with your talent?”
“Erm… no?” Y/N said. She wondered if Elway needed glasses because surely, she wasn’t referring to herself. “Professor… are you sure you’re talking to the right student?”
She laughed so hard that she had to clutch her stomach tightly. She ignored her question. “My dear, do you have any ideas of what you want to be when you’re older?”
“Not really.”
“I have a proposition for you,” she beamed, flicking her long blonde, almost silver hair out of the way. “Let me take you under my wing, make you into a proper duellist.”
Y/N blinked. She didn’t know what to say and stood there with her mouth gaped.
“Yes, you heard that correctly.” Professor Elway teased. “I’d love to mentor you.”
She sputtered, positively confused and flustered. “I’m not at the top of the class, I struggle with Charms, I’ve never had a huge interest in it — I don’t know the first thing about duelling!”
“That’s what I’m here for, no? And your skill is exceptional and I know a duellist when I see one. You’ve shown the last few lessons that you’re capable of casting very strong spells.
“And do you know what separates a duellist from the masses? Energy, emotions and power. What changed when I told you to think about something motivating? A powerful Duellist may only be out of sheer power and brunt force, but a well-rounded Duellist listens to every part of their body. Their wand, their heart, the emotions that cause them to fight.”
“But —”
Elway flicked her wrist, mildly interested in her excuses. “Anyway, off to your next lesson. Take some time to think about it,” she smiled, clearly not going to take no for an answer. “I’ll be waiting for when you finally agree.”
Both Lily and James took her arms, hooking it with theirs and walked to Potions. They were staring at her, lost for words at Professor Elway’s proposition.

“Yes, Pettigrew.” McGonagall scolded rather harshly. “The essay is due on Monday.”
Peter averted his gaze, grumbling out a thank you before exiting her office. “Dunno why she’s so strict with me.”
“She wants the best for you,” James tried to encourage as they all headed back to their common room.
Y/N couldn’t care less as she thought about later that night. No matter how hard she tried, Slughorn wouldn’t take no for an answer and she was almost forced to make an appearance at the Slugclub.
Lily was so excited, running through their dorm as she got ready.
Marlene sulked a bit, folding her arms across her chest. She was quiet enough for Lily not to hear, but Y/N heard her clear as day. “That’s not fair. I want to be invited. I want to feel special too.”
“You’re more than special,” Dorcas cut in, rubbing a hand up and down her shoulder. “You’re a star, baby.”
Y/N ignored them, fiddling with a small tube of eyeliner, watching Lily excitedly going through her closest.
Luckily, not only would Lily be there, but Remus, most likely Regulus — however, she doubted they would be able to interact — and funnily enough, James was invited too.
Inside the actual party was decent, a lot better than she expected. There were still the uptight students who thought they were above others, or the Purebloods that judged her when she walked into the room, but it was bearable.
Y/N chuckled as she watched Remus throwback drink after drink, sneakily stealing a few alcoholic beverages meant for the adults. His movements were so discreet that nobody ever suspected him.
She covered her smile behind her glass.
“Hi. It’s been awhile.”
Y/N turned around, and there, Aldrich McLaggen stood wearing a little smile. He trimmed his blond hair to sweep nicely and his cheekbones hallowed out.
“It has. And congratulations, I heard you’re on the Quidditch team.”
“Yes! Chaser - taking over Bell’s position.”
“So… How are you?”
If it was even possible, Aldrich’s smile grew wide. “I’ll be a lot better if I saw your smile tonight?”
She didn’t smile; unimpressed and decided to sip on her drink.
“Yeah,” Aldrich began again, “Didn’t think that would work.”
“A pretty big miss.” She grumbled.
“But I’m getting to know how to impress you in the future.”
Y/N turned to side-eye him. “Hmm? How?”
“How about -” And out of nowhere, he reached behind her ear and pulled out a red rose, handing it to her. Much like a Muggle magician.
She felt a coy smile tug at her lips and forced it down, but failed. “Nice one.”
“Everyone! Please come down and sit!” Slughorn announced, calling to all the students.
He beamed, flashing his teeth. “Don’t hide away again. I’d love to see you again.”
She tilted her head at him, tilting her glass before making her way to find her spot at the table.
The girl beside her had frizzy light brown hair and large glasses that looked like they were from an animated children’s television program. She was draped in a colourful shawl.
“Hi, I’m Y/N.”
But the other young witch smiled brightly, although never quite meeting her eyes as she outstretched her hand. “Sybill Trelawney.”
She shook Sybill’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
But then Y/N took a good look at her and realized, “We’re in the same charms class, right?”
Sybill nodded her head, fingers tapping rapidly on the table. “For two years now. I sit a row behind you. And by the way, you're very pretty.”
She was taken back, a genuine smile spreading over her lips. “Thank you, you look lovely too! I adore your glasses.”
A light blush spread across Sybill’s face, her hand brushing against her glasses. Her eyes peered up for a second before averting her gaze. Y/N couldn’t help but smile, already enjoying Sybill’s presence.

Alderstar and Myrtlewing!
Alderstar acting normal, but something is off, and we see an earlier moment of his shock after killing for the first time.
Myrtlewing being the medicine cat and much better at acting. but why are his whiskers so ruffled? Then him killing, then him as a kittypet, upset because Alderstar was dead. His chest fur has a bit of a more red tinge, and Alderstar is more golden than orange, but picrew can only be so good.
Bonus Stormstar (Alderstar's father):
