I absolutely had to see Sherlock and John walking through the streets of an Umbrian village with my own eyes after reading this perfect fic by Berty @bertytravelsfar . Not having time for a drawing, I made a quick photomontage. The photo used is not mine but by F.Gariazzo, you can see it and other photos of the village of Corciano at this link (it seems the perfect place for this story).

WIP Wednesday: Through a Glass, Darkly

It begins in an alley. Two alleys, to be accurate. John and Sherlock, chasing a suspect. Holmes and Watson running for their lives.

“There’s nowhere to go.” Sherlock’s calm voice echoes off the alley walls. “If you turn yourself in, I will see that you get reasonable terms. Your crimes are all financial, though I suspect that if we go looking for murder, we’ll find a few that can be attributed to you. Surrender now, and it will go better for you.”

Stepping out where they can see her, she holds a gun pointed in the direction of Sherlock’s voice. She must know that he wouldn’t come alone, that John is somewhere in the darkness, his gun drawn. 

“No thanks,” she says, and fires.

Parallel stories, in two different timelines/realities. While Sherlock and John run from Scotland Yard, accused of a crime they didn't commit, Holmes and Watson must figure out the mystery behind what happened in that alley.

Most Comments: White Knight, a fake-relationship fic that has Sherlock and Janine teaming up to get married for a case, much to John's dismay. The fact that John knows it's all fake doesn't comfort him at all.

Fourth-Most Kudos: Another Auld Lang Syne, a holiday advent fic that has John unexpectedly receiving an out of town job offer and finding himself at a crossroads.

Most Words: Out There, an X-Files fusion that casts Sherlock as Mulder and John as Scully, clocks in at 131,695 words and is BY FAR the longest thing I've ever written. This one merges my two most beloved fandoms and, in a lot of ways, feels like the fic I was born to write.

Least Words: Excluding the myriad ficlets I've collected in Little Contributions, my shortest individual fic is Cake, a Sally-centric piece that is 2,420 words long and recounts the horrifying circumstances surrounding her first meeting with Sherlock.

A solid 20k involving a violin, the winter, PTSD symptoms and the many and complicated emotions that emerge when people try to express things left unsaid for a very long time. It was very easy to read, which I loved... the prose is fluid and must have been smartly edited because I didn’t skip anything or feel that I was missing pieces. Of course fanfics aren’t usually particularly hard to read because they’re not academic papers but listen, my attention span isn’t what it was. Mycroft is in there and his descriptions through John’s eyes are interesting. The whole thing is spot-on with characterisation tbh, and with the few paragraphs that are just here to add scenery (London, the flat, etc), it feels very natural. It’s like salt. You don’t know when it’s there but by fuck do you know when you forgot. It doesn’t have the Hurt/Comfort tag but it could. It hits the spot. Also, it managed to make super awkward first steps into a relationship into endearing scenes... that’s neat.

Nightjet: Even though Frankfurt’s central station is a terminal one, an icy wind is blasting the concourse when Sherlock exits the relative warmth of the S-Bahn station (unique smell, very different from the London Tube).

Lost In A Good Book: “Come on, John, we’re losing him!”

Slipstream: This is nice, thinks John Watson when he unloads his bags onto one of the two beds and looks around.

Hot Water Bottle: The storm has evolved into a full-blown gale by the time they’re ready to return to their accommodation.

Rewind: It hasn’t happened in such a long time so that when it does, entirely by accident, Sherlock is wholly unprepared and, shortly afterwards, somewhat resentful about it.

Danger Nights: “Should have known that there’d be no signal around here,” mutters John.
