so this is a big, long rant about sexism in the idv community bc it's been on my mind lately and i need to put it out there. this is what i've observed after almost four years in the fandom and been stewing on for a long-ass time. if you don't feel like reading an essay on how annoyed some random enby on the internet is, then don't click the read more and just keep scrolling. don't interact with this post if all you're gonna do is get mad; i'm not here to piss anyone off, just make observations. and if this isn't your experience, good for you and please direct me to whatever circles you run in because i need to be there.

so, i've noticed that the idv fandom is extremely shit when it comes to how they treat female characters, and nobody really.. talks about it?? the only person i've ever seen actually discuss it used it as a way to drum up sympathy for ada. which, if you know me, you know really fucking pisses me off. because there are SO MANY OTHER EXAMPLES of sexism in this community, but no, clearly because we have sympathy for a male victim of abuse we're being sexist towards his abuser.

the thing is. there is so much to point to when you talk about how the fandom is sexist. it's very common to see female characters boiled down to just a couple traits. mary?? hot mommy step on me. michiko?? soft and gentle and demure (don't think i won't notice the weird shit about how that's a very common stereotype of asian women btw i see it). demi?? hot and drinks a lot. emma and lily are "uwu mentally ill babies". annie is soft. emily is either an irredeemable monster or a bitch, depending on who you're talking to. patricia is scary and mean. sangria's a girlboss, grace is soft and gentle, martha is spunky. and if you ask anyone their thoughts / ideas on these characters beyond those short descriptors you get nothing. i'm starting to fucking hate the word "girlboss" because it's all anyone says in response to like half these characters.

male characters are given alllllll the nuance in the world you can't talk to an aesop fan without them going into their endless headcanons / theories on why he's the way he is or how he's not actually that bad of a person or how cute he is or whatever. look at norton, or eli, or orpheus, or luca, or edgar, or joseph, or ithaqua, or any characters in that vein, and look at how the fandom treats them. look at the endless fanfictions and character studies and ships and x readers and headcanons. and then look at what female characters get. nowhere near that much.

i feel like margaretha and emily are the ones who suffer the most from this male-centric view by the fandom. they're characters who are inherently intricate, whose actions can't be explained away as entirely good or entirely bad. but that doesn't stop people from actively trying. they're going to act like margaretha wasn't being horrifically mistreated by her husband and just decided to burn down the circus for funsies or whatever. they're going to act like emily isn't trying so fucking hard to help emma and repent for what she's done. neither of them are meant to be read as black-and-white, but people will try because if they have to use more than two braincells on a female character they're going to implode.

meanwhile you get paragraph after paragraph about the intricacies of the argument between luca and alva. you get so many people analysing the relationship between norton and orpheus and how they're both kinda dicks but also both kinda have points. you get endless people defending joseph's actions bc his brother's dead and he's terrified of growing old / forgetting the people he loved / dying. you get so many fucking stories about how y'know, edgar's not that bad actually.

AND I'M NOT AGAINST ANALYSING THESE CHARACTERS!!! idv, especially in recent years, has been doing some great things with character writing. like, fuck 'em, they've got their issues, but they're still really good with some stuff and deserve credit. but don't act like it's not obvious how so many people have overlooked women (and poc, don't think i've noticed people ignoring the intricacies behind william and ganji as characters as well in favour of "himbo" and "bastard who cares", but i'm white so that's not exactly my place to talk) in favour of their favourite skinny whiteboy of the week.

they're that way with older-looking characters, too. if an idv guy has facial hair, you bet your ass he's also getting boiled down to his base traits. jose's an alcoholic, kevin is self-sacrificing and likes women, kurt is a little guy, kreacher is Awful, charles basically doesn't fucking exist anymore. but again not the focus of the talk atm.

it's just. so upsetting. esp. since most of my favourite idv characters are women but everyone i talk to about them is like "oh yeah demi's hot" or "aww annie's such a nervous little baby" or "god patricia's such a cool girlboss". and even when the shit they say is positive in a vacuum it still makes me so upset bc THAT'S NOT ALL THEY ARE!! demi is kind and loving and hardworking in the face of a world that only ever hurt her. annie's life has been an endless stream of pain and heartbreak and the only thing she really wants is freedom. patricia is literally cursed and is trying to find her place in the world.

also. i fucking hate ada but she falls victim to this too. as much as i despise the "you dislike her just bc you're sexist" thing and as horribly uncomfortable as she makes me, don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character is boiled down to how much she "loves" this man. don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character, all of her promise and potential, is forgotten in favour of that fucking trainwreck of a relationship. i bet half the fandom can't tell me anything about her other than her relationship with emil. emil suffers from this too, with his backstory and personality and life of abuse becoming an afterthought, but again, not what we're focusing on.

this is not an isolated thing or confined solely to the idv fandom. this happens in fandoms everywhere. but because idv is so close to my heart i feel like i really need to talk about it. there's so little content of female characters when there's fucking daily content of male ones. and don't get me wrong, i do like male characters. norton is literally one of my favourite fictional characters and i love talking about / analysing him. but i can guarantee a lot of people wouldn't be so interested in him if he was a woman.

sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. mandatory "this doesn't apply to everyone in the fandom" and "if this doesn't apply to you then i'm not fucking talking about you". we were so against the ashley wood collaboration bc of how much he sexualised michiko (and women in general) but like. do y'all really care that much?? bc i really don't think you do.

Noticed something, now I am rotating this in my brain.

So I didn't take a screenshot of it, but the scores are, of course, not there when that Anna segment of the game starts.

This shows us that life goes on, even while Anna's in the past. Details from other games imply that James and Dorian can remember things from the timelines that Anna undoes.

And then, of course, there is this scene from Detectives United: Timeless Voyage.

...So. It's shown in a moment, during the next minigame, that the bomb is close to blowing up.

Add to that the fact that time continues to progress while Anna is in the past, and the fact that James and Dorian may or may not remember the other timelines...

There is 100% a timeline where Dorian and James get blown up by the bomb, and given the laws of the world there is a distinct possibility that they remember blowing up.

So Henry fuckin Emily,started off on the right path,grew up in a semi-toxic and kinda homphobic home but was able to avoid not turnin in2 his parents (same his twin sister Jen) But damn once he goes to college and starts hangin out with William and Bonnie,he does get lil dumber and much more rebellious,obviously he was fully agaisnt hurtin any1 and didnt want any1 2 get harm and was fallin head over heels for William and even gor 2 🤭🤭 wit william and as they get close 2 ending their final college year he gets the idea of runnin some kind of business,mostly cuz William had was gettin a business degree and it'll be a great away from keepin each other from driftin apart and William comes up with de idea of it bein a family business (as they both have kids on the way) and to have animatronics as they were both good with mechanics and most techinally stuff

And everything ,good they finally get 2 open up the restaurant and William one night mentions havin a youngest sister,and how much he disliked her, and he want on and on until he admitted to killin her and even up 2 this day knows where her body is and Henry is just like :),)what the fuck but William ~trusts~ him and know that Henry wouldnt tell any1 cuz their ~in love~ and together and not just william takin advantage of his freind and Henry doesn't cuz he feels that way 2 and tries 2 think of it as William makin a mistake as a teen but seein how calm he was and how remorseful he was made him nervous as hellAnd than the first accident happened and Henry walked right in on William strangling the kid and just kinda freaked out but didn't do anythin 2 help the kid just shut the door and waited until William opened it,who asked if he could help hide the body and He does help cause holy shit he or one of his kids might be next and William says this should be the only one and that he """"didnt"""" even realized what he was doin and so Henry keeps quiet not wantin 2 upset William .

And a few more """accidents"""" happens and Henry knows,he knows it's William doin it but he just cannot say it,he just cannot tell any1 else that its William

And they argue a lot abt William randomly kidnappin and murderin kids ,not that William defined himself well he did but not complety,just claimed he couldn't helped killin or harmin him as it just was the way he was,he knew he is a horrible person but he simply didn't care and Henry 2 extend didnt care ,he was also able 2 pick up in William's kids bruises and the way they all seemed 2 dislike William 2 an extended but just never rlly said anythin abt it

Even after his own daughter died did he just not say anythin along with his wife dyin and two of William's kids while knowin full well William probably had somthein 2 do with it,even after William disappered and he faked his own death did he just not tell anyone cuz he honestly didnt care what William did while also carin about those William hurt,He was depressed and suicidal after Charlie's death and heartbroken over all the other kids death but he could never put in the full effort of turnin William in,he wasnt even worried about himself goin 2 jail for helpin out the first few times ,he just couldn't say it or ambitted that William was horrible

You barely had time to stop Selina before she turned the crank on the gas pipes leading into the room in which Jeremiah Valeska was trapped. You cursed, grabbing her arm and yanking her away from the valve.

“Are you out of your mind? Needlessly torturing people is never going to fix this problem, Selina!” You run your fingers through your hair, frustrated. “We need him incarcerated, not wailing mad on fear toxin!”

“You’re either with me, or you’re with him.” Selina jabs a finger into your chest, her eyes hard. “And I’m not gonna take chances on some lunatic who plans on blowing up the city in 5 hours. You can. I won’t.” She storms past you, and you let out a hiss before going to the valve, trying to turn it the opposite direction, when a sound crackles through the speakers on the security monitors that sends a crawl of fear up your spine.

Jeremiah, chained up and beaten, high on fear gas, had begun to laugh.

11. In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?

for sure in the moments leading up to camerons death. her story opens with camerons suicide plan. he’s her best and only friend and he basically comes to her one day and says ‘i wanna kill myself and i wanna make it big to say fuck u to everone who ever hurt me’ and she just doesn’t get it but she loves him so much she goes along with him. she helps him make his bomb and decides to be right there with him when he’s detonating it so he doesn’t have to be alone. he sets it up under the bleachers at their school and times it to go off right when everyone’s going home so they’ll see it. she helps and she’s there with him, freaking out because she doesn’t want to die or lose her friend but she has literally no other option because she has nothing outside of her friendship with him. so they’re sitting there waiting on this bomb and she just panics and says ‘i gotta pee’ and runs off. she ends up calling the police and telling them everything because she’s just so fucking scared and has no idea what to do. that’s her absolute lowest point bc for someone with so little she just cannot face life without her one lifeline. anyways jim is the officer that responds and thats how they meet & when he starts caring for her sorry for the HEAVY ANGST….

12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?

so liza’s whole shtick with the story is that all her friends have powers and she doesn’t, but she does have this stone pendant she finds at like a fuckin farmers market that has some kind of undefined and unlimited power, and she spends most of her arc figuring out what it is, how it works, what it can do, how to make it do what she wants, etc. she finds that it can create things she imagines, even living creatures. there’s a sequence where she is on a rescue mission with some of her friends to get her other friends out of somewhere they’re trapped, and they need a plan to take down tons of huge enemies with four people and a truck. so liza uses her power to create a giant lizard monster, obvi hella godzilla inspired but v much her own thing bc her fave animals are lizards and her derby name is The Lizard (yes she joins a roller derby team stop me!!) but ANYWAYS the whole sequence of the monsters creation and one of her first real practiced powerful uses of the gem’s magic is when she’s at her most calm and focused, before she rages as a giant lizard (:

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

liza is never going to be in a romantic relationship in her story (bc i just… don’t want to) but when it comes to non-romantic relationships she has sooooo many flaws. she grew up with parents who extremely neglected her and spent most of her time homeless, and the only friend she had was not really a healthy person. (from the story above, some important things to note were that cameron was totally fine with her joining him and did not try to stop her at all. he took her devotion as permission to kind of treat her like shit bc he was going through his own things and thought he was entitled to her loyalty even at her expense. he rlly took advantage of her and taught her toxic behaviors) so she was never taught how to properly or healthily interact with others. she has huge issues with respect and tactfulness, she can be very selfish and standoffish, and runs at the first sign of someone trying to impose authority over her. but her biggest flaw that really causes issues is that she does not inherently believe she is deserving of love/care/protection/someone working for her best interest and therefore rejects steps anyone takes to give those things to her. this is worst with jim. she can’t comprehend why he adopted her or makes an effort to care for and about her, so she often refuses to accept these things and purposely makes her life way harder than it needs to be bc she doesn’t get!! that she’s loved!!

this one usually depends on who from, but her default is one big fuck you. anyone who she doesn’t know/isn’t outwardly kind/working towards her best interest/isn’t a friend/is attempting to impose authority over her is met with swift and aggressive resistance. (ie principals, teachers, other kids parents, kids she deems are ‘privileged little shitheads’) she’s a little firecracker lmao. criticism that hits on things she is actually insecure about is hit with tearful arguments and desperation. she’s quick to blame her upbringing and her situation on her shortcomings because she can’t handle the shame of knowing she’s flawed. being wrong/doing something not as good as she should/not understanding things upsets her so much because she’s so ashamed she can’t do things the way other people can and when she’s told to improve these things she throws FITS. (ie her english teacher calling a meeting with her & jim abt liza’s ‘poor performance’ and she tears this woman a new asshole because ‘i never showed up to school as a child because i didn’t have parents that cared about my education so i have the reading comprehension skills of a fourth grader you ignorant bitch’ is a good example of how she responds to criticism lmao)
