BAKING WITH THE WEASLEY SIBLINGS

William ‘Bill’

Since he is the eldest, he had to do a lot of cooking with his parents. He was a victim of ‘third parent’ syndrome. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t find comfort in baking. It still fills a void in his heart when cooking and baking. His favorite thing to make, with you, is something he learned in Egypt. Baklava. It’s super airy, and the right amount of sweet. Given being partially turned has made his senses heighten, it makes for a good treat to share with you and his siblings. It’s nice to do normal things, when your life is so abnormal. He also learned to make some mean meat pies. Just know not to ask a slice on the full moon. That shit is raw. Thats what you get for dating a curse breaking werewolf. Eh. More protein never hurts in a diet, most of the time

Charlie

As the second oldest, he also had to do a lot of baking as well. There is also the fact that being a Dragonologist has left him fending for himself in the wild. So he’s had to get pretty creative if he wants something sweet. Hey. He’s a Weasley. They are famous for being creative. A treat he enjoys is Romanian Dessert Salami. Though, often times he uses the term liberally and often makes a rather fruity bread roll instead. Gotta use what ya got! Also, hope you are prepared to see him using his wand a lot for cooking. Don’t have much when chasing dragons. It is rather fascinating to learn how to make desserts from so little. Your little adventure man

Percy

Being the third child, you would think he wouldn’t be as responsible as his older siblings. You are wrong. The moment the two older brothers were out the door, it was his turn. Desserts were never a passion of his, so he’s not the best at it. But he won’t deny the fact he can make a mean pie. It’s a secret talent he has. You can count on him to make any pie your heart desires. He won’t say it out loud, but making pies is very therapeutic to him. He has a pie for each sibling even. Bill is meat, Charlie is mixed berries, Fred is Chocolate while George is Peanut butter, Ron is Pumpkin, and Ginny is Peach. Him? …..What was your favorite type of pie again~?

Fred

Fred isn’t really much of a baker. He’s more of the cooking type. You are better off seeing him make breakfast, despite being a night owl, compared to making any desserts. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t find his loopholes. Like how Percy is great with pies, Fred is amazing with Bread. Fred Bread! As proxy, he has his siblings favorite bread types memorized. Bill likes dark chocolate types, Charlie likes anything with berries, Percy is rather boring with banana, he loves grape while George will like orange, Ron likes hers with some pumpkin, and Ginny is the cinnamon type. Expect plenty of fresh bread with him. He’s got you covered

George

He IS the baker in the family. Who do you think brought up the idea of selling bake goods at WWW? He can, and will, bake ANYTHING! He has everyone’s favorite treats memorized. He is constantly handing out free samples to kids. He WILL find an excuse to bake. You want cookies? Hot and fresh from the oven. It’s three am and you want a cake? It’s now four am and you got a cake. He IS the baker. He loves to bake so much, and is always making sure the shop has fresh supply. If you can’t ever find him anywhere, follow your nose to the kitchen. He’s got something in the works. For someone!

Ron

Like Fred, he’s not really a baker. He’s a cooker. Doesn’t mean he can’t make a dessert if he has to. He’s become pretty good at making tarts, custards, and puddings. Very much comfort food. Something he picked up again when going to school with Harry. Given, ya know, the Dursleys. He won’t lie, it was also a cheap way to flirt with Hermione without breaking his wallet. Funny thing is she was never one for such desserts. Now she can’t get enough. He makes those comfort foods with a lot of heart, and is willing to make them if you have a bad day. He does get a bit anxious when cooking around other people, but he warms up eventually.

Ginny

Like Fred and Ron, she doesn’t really bake either. She was the baby of the family, after all. She does, however, like to make cookies for her team. There is something so nice about having a warm cookie after a cold rainy day of Quidditch practice. Helps that you convinced her to pick up the habit again. She likes to make cookies with fruit in them. To try and have them on the healthier side, given she’s an athlete. So a tart cookie is a good cookie to her. It’s simple, basic, and quick, but nothing wrong with that. A quickly made cookie, with love, is better than a drawn out dessert of labor. It’s also easy to blame her love of fruity desserts on Charlie. She’s the baby girl in an army of boys. She picked up some habits

Eating Well

If you are someone who struggles to figure out what to eat, this post may help.

There is a lot of information out there about eating well. It's important to know it's not as complicated as most guides try to make it. The following is a simple way of looking at food adapted from David Werner's Where There Is No Doctor:

You need a main food, or foods. A "Main Food" is one or more starch bases, like pasta/noodles, bread/tortilla/biscuits, hominy, rice, potatoes, taro, millet, barley, or another grain or starchy tuber.

These are usually cheap and should make up a majority of your calories. They often also provide an amount of protein, vitamins and minerals.

However, living on starchy bases alone is not adequate. To them, you need to add at least one or two each of "Go Foods", "Grow Foods" and "Glow Foods" every day.

"Go Foods" are energy foods. They are things like oils, fats, peanuts, other nuts, oily seeds (like sesame and sunflower), and sugars (like granulated sugar, honey, maple syrup, and fruit juices). Eat more of these if you are doing heavy work. They can also replace some of your Main Food, though they are often somewhat more expensive.

"Grow Foods" are foods that build muscle and other body tissues and heal injuries. They include animal foods (like meat, eggs, milk, and fish), legumes (beans, peas, peanuts, and lentils), and seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, melon, etc...).

"Glow Foods" are foods that contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. These include dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collards, turnip greens, radish greens, etc...), orange vegetables (carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, winter squash of any kind, etc...), fruits (apples, pears, berries, quince, etc...) and other vegetables (turnips, radishes, summer squash, onions, cabbage, etc...), herbs and spices (chili powder, garlic, cumin, thyme, oregano, sage, cinnamon, etc...).

Example meals (each meal does not need to contain all types of foods, as long as someone is eating some of each every day):

A rice bowl (Main) with vegetable (Glow) and bean (Grow) curry (Glow).

Oatmeal (Main) with whole or coconut milk (Go, Grow) and berries (Glow)

Spaghetti (Main) with tomato sauce (Glow) and meatballs (Grow)

Tapioca pudding (Main, Grow, Go) with cinnamon and nutmeg (Glow)

Farrow (Main) with stewed tomatoes (Glow) and olive oil (Go)

Zucchini boats (Glow) with black beans (Grow), rice (Main) and cheese (Go, Grow)

Baked potato (Main) with broccoli (Glow) and cheese (Go, Grow)

Potato (Main) and spinach (Glow) curry (Glow)

Whole fat yogurt (Grow, Go), granola (Main, Go), and berries (Glow)

Peanut butter (Go, Grow) and jam (Go, Glow) on toast (Main)

waking up with neuvillette is usually one type of morning or the other, you feel. some mornings are filled with the both of you hastily rushing for work. while neuvillette is typically calm, composed, and is able to take his time in the morning... you, on the other hand, often do not experience that luxury. most mornings are equated with your hands haggardly slamming the alarm button on your phone, until you're left with fifteen minutes to get up and get out of the house.

on occasions, neuvillette takes the time to prepare breakfast for the both of you – pain au chocolats and fresh milk that are delivered by the faithful melusines often grace your dining table, and fresh loaves of bread from the bakery of hotel debord are quickly paired with the coldest, saltiest slabs of butter.

on the other side of your relationship's shared mornings, you and neuvillette get to lay cosily beneath your covers, nestled in warmth. you tiredly turn to glance at him, still clad in his silk pajamas, and his still-sleeping face leaning towards you.

"good morning, my dear," you whisper, gently running your fingers through his hair. at this point... who cares if he wakes up. not you. his hair is so, so soft – too soft for you to remove it.

your hands suddenly draw back when a tired groan is heard. a groan so soft, perhaps only one of your dear melusines could have heard it. neuvillette mumbles something and turns away from you.

"dearest. isn't it about time to wake up? surely the great chief justice of fontaine would never be seen sleeping in," a teasing lilt fills your voice. your fingers reach to run through his hair again, soothing and quieting any murmurs you hear.

your fleece blanket is pulled off his torso, and neuvillette opts for the coverage of his pillow instead. whatever coverage it could lend to the cold of the room, anyways.

you spot the slightest hint of a smile on your beloved's face as he exhales lightly, mimicking his sleeping position earlier – the smile vanishes as quickly as it appears.

"get up. with the rate you're sleeping in, rufina would have eaten all the croissants on their way here!" you remove the pillow as well. neuvillette's hands make their way up to shield his eyes.

"can't your most beloved get a bit more shut-eye before his work?" neuvillette blinks at you, the smile returning to his features.

"crime and villainy do not have the day off, and so justice must work round the clock as well. isn't that right, chief justice? plus, i'm sure your little melusines miss their papa. it wouldn't do for them to spend so much time away from you," you tease once more, moving from the bed to open the windows.

fresh air fills the room, the petrichor scent of last night's rain – you and neuvillette had been watching a rather emotional film – wafts through the windows as well. fontaine's skies have been painted with a beautiful blue, and the grounds a vivid green. you hear the melodies of birds and the conversations of the swans and ducks from the lake; yes, it's morning once more in fontaine. dawn's light streams in through the windows once more.

"alright, alright – i'm up." neuvillette pretends to grouch, standing up and making his way to your side, wrapping his arms around you. "good morning, my sweet dove."

Currently on Shift: Carmen Berzatto, Richie Jerimovich & Sydney Adamu

Carmen

At first, thought it was kinda weird that you had a mini fridge with a padlock in your room

You told him it was where you kept your vintage jeans

Which was a complete lie, so when Carmen told you he collected jeans too?

Well, you had to spend a lot of time researching on the computer to cover that lie up

Will make you blood-infused recipes to show you he accepts you

Red velvet cake with blood instead of beetroot

Honestly, would eat it as well

Ends up getting a little obsessed with making stuff the perfect texture

Asks you loads of questions about blood

What do you like about it? Do different types taste different? How do you like it prepared?

He wants to know everything about your preferences so he can make everything perfect

I think Carmy's vampire partner would struggle the most with being a vampire and not a human

So eating the food Carmen makes you will make you tear up sometimes because it reminds you so much of being human

Kinda wants you to bite him, but also kinda does not

So So Nervous about it, but you never bring it up

You can hear his pulse racing when he’s stressed so you always know when he needs help

You’ll kiss his pulse point when you notice him stressing out

He washes his hands a million times when he’s back from work in case of garlic

Before he knew the secret he once brought you some garlic bread

Your nose burnt for a week, your throat even longer

You couldn't bring yourself not to eat it when he gave you those eyes

Carmen has sunscreen for you in summer and insists on it even if it does nothing

The hot summer in Chicago just makes you extra exhausted and sluggish so you need to feed more

He knows when you’re slacking on your feeding and will make you blood puddings (now with real blood)

When he does pluck up his courage and ask about biting he finds out he kinda likes it

Loves it when your teeth scrape his most sensitive areas

He really likes it when you bite at the pudge of his stomach, though it isn’t the best spot for you to feed from

But your bites are more love bites than actually feeding from him

Overall, he is not as chill as Richie would be with a vampire partner, but that's because he isn’t chill about anything

He’s just happy someone likes him :’)

Richie

“You’re a vampire? My baby’s a vampire?”

He would love you to bite him, wants to see your teeth marks all over him

Was jealous for a while wondering where you were getting blood from

Who were you biting? Did they taste better than him?

He was not having that

Read that papayas make blood taste better so he starts eating them all the time

Starts taking iron tablets in case that tangy taste is what gets you going

‘Accidentally’ cuts himself in the kitchen to see your reaction.

It’s minimal

Eventually, he just gives in and is like,

“Why have you not drunk from me yet?”

Moans when you bite him, it’s probs made him nut let's be real

Loves to have your bite marks all over him, on his thighs, his chest, his arms

Wants you to feed from him until he goes dizzy and can’t stand

Loses his mind when his blood drips from your lips and you stare at him all predatory

Turns red when you tell him how good he tastes

Enjoys being taken care of afterwards

Makes you watch Blade a million times

Calls himself your toyboy (even if you’re not that old a vampire or younger than him)

Whenever he sees bats he’ll tell you he saw one of your friends

Talks to the bats sometimes

Keeps blood in a wine bottle for you at the restaurant and loves to pour it for you and take care of you when you visit

Loves to cuddle up to you in summer because your body is nice and cold

The most interested in your ‘powers’ and asks you a million questions

“You or Godzilla, who would win?”

“Wait, so when you kept asking me to open all those jars?”

So smug when he realised how often you acted helpless just to get his help

Arm wrestles you all the time

Thinks if he catches you off guard he might win (Sometimes you let him)

He’s a loser, but he’s your tasty loser

Sydney

Laughs when she finds out and thinks it’s a joke

Probably bails on you for a little while

But then ends up coming back like…

"I didn’t think i could be ok with it, but I would rather be with you than without you"

Is grossed out by it, so you drink blood in private

She does not want to be bitten

Is the least chill with it, but she loves you so she deals

Will feel for your fangs every time you kiss, but you keep them hidden away

She gets mad at you when you go out when it’s really sunny

Keeps shades and an extra hat in her bag because sometimes you just turn up

She’ll be waking around the city and you just appear and ask to hang out

She thinks it’s a kind of power

She just forgot she added you on Find My Friends

Then she realises she can use your powers for her gain

Uses you when shopping second-hand to check if stuff is real silver

Buys you a gothic ring with a bat on it mostly as a joke

But you wear it all the time, it melts her little heart

Loves,when you turn into a little bat, especially if you look like a fruit bat

She’ll cradle you against her chest and stroke your head with her fingers

Will carry you around in her bag all day if you want to

She doesn’t call you her vampire but thinks of you as her bat

Thinks it’s pretty funny when you go as a vampire for Halloween every year

Especially when a drunk Richie starts complimenting how real your fangs are and pokes his fingers in your mouth

Is definitely not jealous that when Tina cut her finger during prep you had to step out of the room

Especially not when she sees the empty iron pouches in the trash

She knows they tide you over in emergencies till you can drink blood

Maybe she wants you to drink from her a little bit

Perhaps you’ll get to taste her one day after all, just as a little treat

Grim Info Compilation part 13: Food (pt2)

Grim doesn’t seem to have a particular preference for one type of food over any others, equally excited about fruits, vegetables and meat, saying, “I’d eat fruit every day if I could afford ‘em on our lousy budget.”

We also see Grim excited about ice cream, bread, coconut milk, lemonade, apples, sandwiches, eggs, tarts, chicken, doughnuts, pudding, churros, and grass.

But he may enjoy tuna more than anything, accepting a can of tuna in exchange for performing a dangerous task for Azul, asking for tuna as payment for photos during Halloween and having the prefect promise him tuna in exchange for his cooperation in the Prologue.

Grim says that if he had magic like Trey’s he would be eating canned tuna for every meal and often refers to the VDC as his opportunity for a “tuna bonanza” during Book 5.

During the Playfulland event Lilia struggles to keep Grim from leaping out during a ride to eat tuna fish, and Grim successfully bites one in another attraction.

Leona has him physically restrained and carried away by Jack, Kalim and the prefect to keep him from eating the fish.

Grim is a member of the Gastronomy Club, and he says that “eating stuff like looks edible is a legitimate Gastronomy Club activity.”

We get more detail in the novel, where we learn that Grim founded the Gastronomy Club himself after all he wanted to do was eat and all the clubs tangentially related to food refused his application. Grim is often complaining about being hungry, as seen in Firelit Sky, Harveston, Vargas Camp and Book 1 through 6.

Multiple characters comment on how much Grim eats, with Jade, Deuce, Riddle and Idia all commenting on how he has a one-track mind when it comes to food.

While Grim will eat at every opportunity he can become full, eating too much during Firelit Sky and Book 4.

My headcanon for Elias is that he’s a scrawny, bony boy because he suffered from Dysphagia, making it difficult for him to chew and swallow things and like - I kind of hurt myself thinking that might be why he favors his grandmother’s cream pies so much. Depending on how bad he suffered from Dysphagia in life, soft and moist foods, and smooth/thick deserts (like custard and bread pudding) would be safest for him to eat. Including cream pies - and it’s not like the Dysphagia would be a constant thing, at least not at first (depending on which type of MS he had).

A bit of an info dump below?? Sorry.

The most common type which is Relasping-Remitting MS, where there’d be a brief period of remission between symptoms of MS. Without treatment though (which there likely wasn’t much of during Elias’ lifetime since MS was newly named), that would develop into Secondary-Progressive MS.

Which sucks, because there’s often no longer a period of remission between symptoms. Rarely, some people might have a reprieve of symptoms, but for those with SPMS - the symptoms just gradually continue to worsen over time.

People aren’t born with MS, it develops some point after birth (I think with the immune system is developing, but I need to do more research).

So Elias, on top of his foot deformity, would slowly start getting sicker and just not recover. And as he got older, it would slowly transition from a general malaise that never went away to a constant one. We know that he walked with a cane later on in his life, but the pain he had to have been in - both from the MS and whatever deformity he might have had.

I got a little off topic, but - on top of the muscle pain, and the poor vision, it had to be so terrible to start struggling to eat food as well. Also, terrifying. Which would give Elias’ siblings even more ample ammunition to bully him which (especially if it was bad enough to where food would need to be puréed or, in some cases, thickened with bread or flour) - Ow.

Not to mention, regardless of his relationship with his family, their deaths in quick succession and the suspicion of his hand in it (people, especially servants, had to have at least whispered about it) would probably turn him off eating. This may be me projecting, but pain can kind of make it difficult to eat???

But also??? Chubby Elias. He canonically has a sweet tooth - no one can tell me otherwise!! He as a drooling sprite (and he’s precious, I want to give him all the sweetest things in the world). Eating as a comfort, to cope with things, with pain. Especially his grandmother’s recipes, because the way he talks of her in game is always fond, and it just gives me the feeling that her Far Preferred his grandmother over the rest of his family. And the fact that a lot of her recipes are something that is safe for him to eat if he suffers from Dysphagia???

You might be more likely to struggle gaining weight, but that doesn’t mean you can’t.

The feelings you give me make my heart squeeze in my chest (and kind of want to squeeze Elias because c h u b. B e l l y. S q u i s h. Yea????). Chubby boy and men rights! Give them fat!

All the more to hug and squish (and bite, gently, but that’s for the bedroom-) Also, it would make sense for Elias to gain weight. Depending on the severity of the pain his body was in (not even taking into account his feet), and the fact that he was often bedridden, it’s not like he was canonically one to get a lot of exercise! Maybe not a lot, because I think the Victorian ideal was that the sick couldn’t digest a lot of food, so it was best to give the small but nutritious meals (beef tea or extract, for example) over a lot of food, but he definitely would have gained some pounds.

So now I flip flop between these two Headcanons, lmao. Or alternatively, both fit for different times of his life - and for added angst, if he did struggle to eat after his asshole family’s death - maybe being happy makes him more prone to indulge in sweets and other foods. He must have been so happy to (think) to have found love with Violet. At least until she and Gerard killed him.

Sorry, went on a bit of a rant here.

Thank you for all this information, it's wonderful!! There's so many good ways they could've shown his disability and worked with it to make a compelling story, and it's so frustrating that they didn't. But it's always nice to see people bringing his disability back into who he is!!

Also yeah, I like the idea that his weight fluctuated quite a bit depending on things like his mood and how bad his symptoms were at any given time. Cause weight fluctuation in disability is so common and so rarely talked about!

Notes: Fluffy Mackerel Pudding seems to be Fereldan as it's found in DA:O in this Codex entry at the Arl of Redcliffe's Estate in Denerim. Snail & Watercress Salad isn't traditional Avvar cuisine; though snails are standard Avvar fare, this salad which has them in conjunction with other ingredients is Devon's take on snails that they made for their Avvar hosts. The given Spiced Jerky recipe is Dalish, but the book notes that preserved foods like it play an important role in many different Thedosian cultures. Grey Warden Pastry Pockets are a variation on a tough Grey Warden pastry which incorporates the far more delicate Orlesian puff pastry, that was championed by newer Warden recruits from Orlais. Unidentified Meat is usually served with Nevarran Flat Bread. Black Lichen Bread doesn't explicitly say but is clearly dwarven, as it references "underground" versus the "surface" and the dwarf Garin in Orzammar mentions it in DA:O. Peasant Bread is both Dalish and City Elf. Merrill's Blood Soup could be Dalish in origin as it's a recipe of Merrill's. Devon's Lentil Soup recipe has classic Tevinter flavors in it. Roasted Turkey with Sides is found throughout the Free Marches. Sera's Yummy Corn could be Fereldan in origin as it's a recipe of Sera's. Poison Stings is likely Tevinter as Dorian is fond of it. Rice Pudding could be Antivan or Rivaini as in Thedas you don't see much rice outside of Antiva or Rivain, or perhaps Tevinter or Qunari as it was a dish made by Krem, Iron Bull and the Chargers. Found Cake could be Fereldan as it's based on Dog's Found Cake in DA:O. Sugar Cake was purchased from a surface dwarf merchant and is based on Sugar Cake from DA:O (Feraldan dish? Dwarven?). Lamprey Cake was Devon's pickled lamprey-inspired cake, with pickled lamprey itself being a "singular" (implied: odd) favorite of an Orlesian noble. The Hissing Drake, The Golden Nug and The Emerald Valley are drinks served at the Gilded Horn in Orlais. The Emerald Valley's place of origin isn't given in the book, but we know from this Codex that it includes a spirit that is Orlesian, having been made in Lydes. Going by Iron Bull's dialogue with Varric, hot chocolate/cocoa is not from the south and is rare there. Dragon Piss could be Fereldan as it's based on Dragon Piss which is found in Ferelden.

Fried Young Giant Spiders: previously made an appearance in the DA tabletop. The player party arrives at Chanra Thaig and sees "Bonfires built inside steel drums provide warm and heat for the dwarves huddled around them, cooking deepstalkers, what looks like the legs of giant spiders, and small rodent-like animals on spits". The dwarves have "fuel, water, and domesticated spiders and nugs in deeper chambers for food".

Cave beetle previously made an appearance in the DA tabletop. They're described as "scavengers and carrion eaters", "black" and "hard-shelled". They're also known as "rock beetles" and are "little more than a nuisance on its own. Dwarves are even known to roast and eat them out of the shells".

Pickled Eggs (from "The Whole Nug" in World of Thedas)

Seheron Fish Pockets: Iron Bull has dialogue where he says "I remember one guy, he made these things - fish wrapped in thin bread". He was talking of a street food vendor in Seheron who had been forced by Tevinter spies to poison his food. Fittingly, in the cookbook Devon narrates that they learned this recipe from a Charger.

Black Lichen Bread: Garin from DA:O had an incident a few years back where he cut himself and some raw lyrium dust got into his blood. Since then it's been hard for him to concentrate and he's forgetful. He mentions bread that's made by using lichen (I think he mentioned that his lunch was a slice of lichen bread). interestingly, like lyrium, the cookbook lore blurb for Black Lichen Bread contains reference to how black lichen is toxic.

Hearth Cakes (from "The Whole Nug" in World of Thedas)

Peasant Bread: appears in The Masked Empire. in the Dalish camp, Dalish cooks prepared a midday meal, which was served along with peasant bread. "It was almost equal parts wheat, salt, and grease, and in lean winters, it was sometimes the only thing that could put meat on a peasant's bones." Michel watches an old elven woman drizzle honey across a piece and remembers his City Elven mother putting a bit of sugar she had stolen from the tavern she worked in on his piece of bread. The cookbook lore blurb for Peasant Bread says it is eaten by Dalish elves and City elves alike in Orlais, with the recipe being "very straightforward, calling for wheat, salt, and grease in nearly equal parts". Also, in The Last Court, Seraultine (Orlesian) peasants are described as eating bread at mealtimes

The Hanged Man's Mystery Meat Stew: in a DAII loading screen, it says that the tavern's feature dish is a stew made from a different mystery meat every morning

Fish Chowder: in DA:O Zevran says "Can you smell that? Like rotting flesh. Just like back in Antiva City. Now if only you could find me a prostitute or two, a bowl of fish chowder and a corrupt politician, I'd really feel like I was home!"

Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup (the cookbook lore blurb mentions the Orlesian troupe of actors from the show Wilkshire Downs. in this codex they are mentioned along with "cabbage stew")

King Alistair's Lamb and Pea Stew: Alistair and Leliana have this dialogue in DA:O about this dish (Ctrl-F "pea stew").

Cacio e Pepe: First mentioned in Tevinter Nights (The Wigmaker Job). Illario complains "This isn't Cacio e Pepe" while making a show of tapping his dagger against a plate of leftovers. Lucanis replies "You ordered an Antivan dish in Tevinter. What did you expect?", to which Illario quips "Something edible".

Turnip and Mutton Pie

Smoked Ham from the Anderfels: a servant in Mark of the Assassin offers Hawke and Tallis "smoked ham from the Anderfels. They say it tastes of despair". Tallis replies "Wait, does it really? How can ham taste of despair? Why would anyone eat it if it did?". The servant explains "That's what the importer said. They all talk like that" apparently. This dish is also mentioned in DA:I. After WEWH Dorian says "I hope you tried the ham they were serving, by the way. Tastes of despair. Fascinating". The cookbook lore blurb asserts that contrary to rumors and what the importers say, this ham does not, in fact, taste of despair. Rice Pudding: in DA:I Krem mentions a time when he, Iron Bull and the Chargers defended a village from fifty bandits. Afterwards the villagers paid them for their services in bags of rice. He says that they made rice pudding after that. The cookbook lore blurb references this story of Krem's

Varric's Favorite Cinnamon Rolls: in DAII Sandal says that Orana smells of cinnamon rolls, which was interesting to me as DAII is the game where Varric is introduced and his first (and greatest) batch of cinnamon roll friends, the Kirkwall Crew, are featured in

Croissants: Calix and Vaea eat something which arguably look like croissants in the comic Dragon Age: Deception, in an inn in Tevinter.

Cherry Cupcakes: the cookbook lore blurb says these are served by servants on stilts at the Tevinter theature. in the comic Dragon Age: Magekiller, Marius is depicted serving an array of treats and snacks to a Tevinter elite at the Tevinter theatre while on stilts. some of the cupcakes on his tray bear somewhat of a resemblance to the cupcakes in this recipe.

Pickled Lamprey: the cookbook lore blurb is referencing the book Last Flight, where Norbert de la Haine and his unfortunate fondness for pickled lampreys is mentioned.

"Cookbook canon" (notes about the particular worldstate/universe that Devon wrote the cookbook in)

The cookbook was written at some point after the appointment of Divine Victoria, placing it at at least one month after the DA:I base game concludes (at least one month after the defeat of Corypheus). The narrator, Devon, has met and spoken to at least some of the companions & related prominent NPCs, including Varric and Krem. Devon visited Haven.

The HoF was a Cousland. The HoF caught Schmooples for Leliana. Loghain survived DA:O and DA:I, as he's referred to in the present-tense at the time the cookbook is written. Alistair is King of Ferelden. The HoF may have been a lady who romanced Alistair (if you argue that the inclusion of Alistair's love letter to the Warden & the necklace from this merch item as a prop in the photo for Rivaini Couscous Salad as indicator. interesting that the photo where this item is prominently displayed is for the Couscous of all things. back in the day I remember folks calling Cousland "Couscous" hhh).

Hawke was a warrior or rogue and Carver died in the prologue. Hawke was probably Diplomatic. Hawke did not romance Sebastian (in the cookbook he is Prince, and Sebastian reclaims his title as Prince by DA:I unless romanced, in which case he's the Chantry advisor in Starkhaven).

The "worst of [Cullen's] lyrium withdrawals" are mentioned so it could be that the Inquisitor advised Cullen to stop taking lyrium. Cassandra Pentaghast is the Divine. Celene is the Empress of Orlais - possibly ruling "alone" or possibly in the Celene-Gaspard-Briala "work together option", going by "Given how messy Orlesian politics are wont to be, with chevalier cousins vying for the throne and elven handmaids turned both spymaster and lover".

Also, this might be just me and my assumptions or reading of it, but of the companion characters referenced in the book (see section above, Characters mentioned or alluded to in the cookbook), such as Cole, Sera, Merrill, Fenris etc, I feel like it's safe to assume that in this worldstate they were all recruited by the relevant PCs are alive and well (including the Chargers).

Alistair romance bundle (necklace and letter in Rivaini Couscous Salad. the necklace appears again in Goat Custard. the box can be seen in The Golden Nug)

Grey Warden pendant that shows the griffon heraldry (not sure if this is from the Gear Store or somewhere like Etsy. Grey Warden Pastry Pockets). this reappears in Sugar Cake

Solas Jawbone Necklace (Pickled Eggs. hhhh. unlike in Eggs à la Val Foret the blurb here doesn't mention Solas, but he's repped here anyway by the necklace hanging in the background hh)

Some random thoughts

Shoutout to the photo for Starkhaven Fish and Egg Pie. It looks a lot like the illustration in World of Thedas of this dish! you can see that they really took it into consideration when creating this dish/image.

I feel like you can also sense the inspiration in general vibe/feel in Dalish Forest Fruit Cobbler from Dalish Deep Forest Comfort in WoT.

The black and gold theme colors of the cover remind me of when DA:D branding was black and gold.
