This was a mistake. When Tailgate had come to Cyclonus, excited by this little nest of crabs that the white Mer had found, the violet Mer hadn't had the sense to suspect that something could be wrong.

He hadn't expected him and Tailgate to end up in an ambush.

"Ooh, check it!" The lime-green Mer laughed as he and his friends surrounded Cyclonus and Tailgate.

"You know you are on our turf, right? Trying to eat our crabs as if you own the place?"

"B- but-!" Tailgate was about to protest but Cyclonus stopped him, "We are sorry, we didn't know. We'll just take our leave and-!"

"Oi oi, you know we can't let that happen?" A blue Mer laughed, "If we let you go unscathed then others would think they can just come and take our crabs!"

Shit... Cyclonus was old and experienced Mer when it came to fighting, but even he wouldn't be able to take on 5 Mers at once.

He glanced behind him and saw Tailgate shivering in fear. Cyclonus groaned, knowing what he had to do.

"Swim...!" He whispered and the small white Mer blinked, "W- What?"

"I said swim!" Cyclonus snapped as he burst forward and grabbed one of the ambushing Mers, creating an opening for Tailgate to escape, "Get as far as you can get!"

Tailgate didn't want to leave his mate, but he swallowed and swam as fast as he could while Cyclonus clung to the enemy.

"Let go!" The Mer shouted and punched Cyclonus in his gut, forcing the violet Mer to let go in pain, followed by another punch.

"Shit, the little one escaped!" One of the Mers shouted but the lime-green Mer laughed, "Let him go. We will make this one an example for others who think they can just come and take our food."

Cyclonus growled in his last attempt to appear tough and intimidating. This could end up really badly for him...

But at least Tailgate was safe...! That was what mattered to old violet Mer the most...

"Cyclonus!"

The Mer flinched, hearing his mate's voice closing in and so did the attacking Mers.

"What, the shrimp came to get his part of beat-!" A Mer was laughing, but then he and his friends' voices were taken by shock. Cyclonus also blinked in shock.

Tailgate didn't come alone. With him was maybe one of the biggest Mers Cyclonus had ever seen and he and Tailgate belonged in the same Pod as Ultra Magnus.

That Mer was you and by Primus, you were huge and scary looking. You must have taken after a shark of some sort because your sharp triangle-shaped fangs showed with your frown.

"Oi." You growled and Cyclonus knew you were strong the minute he heard your voice.

"So you are the shrimps that have been causing troubles at my turf."

"Y- Your turf-?!" One of the Mers tried to appear tough, but you were having none of that. You let out a fearsome growl that made even Cyclonus flinch and the attacking Mers shiver, their tails shaking.

"I knew there was someone eating my food, but I had no idea who until I ran into this little guy." You growled fearsomely and Tailgate peeked from behind you.

"You got guts, eating my food as if you own the place..." You nodded, but you weren't smiling, "But using my food to assault other Mers...!?"

Primus you were scary, the other Mers looked like they might piss themselves at any given moment.

"I won't accept that!" You roared like a beast from above the surface, your voice making even Mer as old as Cyclonus flinch.

"Hi-!"

"Hieee!"

"Swim!" The 5 Mers took off swimming away, completely forgetting Cyclonus and Tailgate.

"OI!" You roared as you swam after them, their fearful screams echoing through the waters.

Cyclonus blinked and Tailgate swam by his mate's side. "Cyclonus, are you okay? They didn't hurt you, did they?"

"No..." The violet Mer shook his head as he looked at the white Mer, "Are you alright?"

"I- I'm fine thanks to her..." Tailgate grew quiet and Cyclonus looked behind him and saw you hovering above him.

"I..." Cyclonus swallowed nervously as he automatically moved his body to protect Tailgate if needed. "I thank you for your help."

You weren't smiling, but not frowning either.

"No, I should thank you." You finally said and nodded, "I knew someone was eating my food and hurting innocent Mers... I just could never catch them."

You looked at Tailgate who was hiding behind Cyclonus and you smiled. "But thanks to this little one I finally managed to find them."

By now, Cyclonus could tell that you meant only good... But Primus, even your smile was scary.

"I must thank you two." You grinned, scary, and opened your arms, "You two are welcome to come here whenever you want and eat your stomachs full."

"W- won't you starve?" Tailgate asked and you laughed, "Do not worry little one, for I'm only doing this to my friends!"

"We thank you for your help," Cyclonus said as he bowed and Tailgate followed his example. You smiled, "If you ever want some crabs or just want to talk then you are more than welcome here."

The way you put it... It sounded a little like you were lonely... Cyclonus looked at you and he could tell that there was loneliness there that he had once experienced also before joining Lost Light pod or meeting Tailgate.

"We will visit you for sure," Cyclonus said and your smile just grew brighter and suddenly you looked a little less scary.

"It's a promise then!" You laughed happily and Cyclonus and Tailgate took their leave.

"She was really nice despite looking scary!" Tailgate said and Cyclonus nodded, "Yes."

"We are going to visit her, right?" He asked and the other Mer smiled a little, "Yes."

yknow AI art has ruined an entire genre of painting to me, i saw one of those smooth anime-realism pieces and immidiately thought ''ugh, AI art'' until i noticed it was posted by an established deviantart user 6 years ago. like ive never been a huge fan of that genre but it looks like a pretty difficult style to master and i feel bad for the artists who specialized in anime-realism only to have their entire market jacked by people typing keywords into midjourney.
