Carina and Mayas girlfriend (love triangle) works at the vet clinic. Today she has a significant bad day because one of her patients died and she couldn't save them and it shows in her messages to Maya and Carina so the firefighter and/or Carina show up at work and tries to cheer her up with lots of kisses and affection?
Tumblr media
Authors note: This story is a bit shorter than others because I didn't have much time to write over the weekend. Have pity on me ❤
Summary:After a devastating loss for you, both Carina and Maya help you with some cuddles and affection.
---
Excited, the two woman walked up the ramp to the veterinary office where you worked to pay you a little visit with your favorite food in the luggage. They knew you did not like unannounced visits; you usually had a lot of patients of all sizes coming in either for regular treatment or emergencies that left you with no time in between to chat with your girlfriends.
However, according to your brief and unemotional messages to them, they had every reason to worry and so they teamed up during their lunch breaks to make their way over to check on you; to see how you were. "Excuse us, where can we find Doctor L/n?"
The lady at the reception had the landline phone stretched to her ear while she was typing on her computer; totally stressed out. Her gaze shifted to the two ladies in front of her for just a brief second, smiling when she saw the faces of her boss wives and she whispered a quick -One moment please- before turning back to the screen and reading aloud to the person on the phone.
Carina nodded and stepped back to protect the patients privacy. With a quick pull on one of Maya´s arm, she brought her behind the line of discretion. While they waited, the blonde nervously wiggled her leg and bit her lip; she just wanted to rush into your office and take you into her embrace- something bad must have happened to make you behave so cold towards them.
"Doctor DeLuca?" requested the receptionist after a short wait and the addressed turned around. She crossed the last few meters between her and the counter, leaning her elbows on the glass to listen to the other woman talking. "She is in her office but does not want to be disturbed right now. I am sorry."
Now Maya had also approached and put her hands on her hips. Her gaze was questioning and urgent; her eyebrows raised sharply, so that small wrinkles formed on her forehead. "With all respect, we know that you have your orders but she is our wife and we are worried so we are going in now and you will not stop us!"
She pushed past Carina, who previously bit her lip and then started moving backwards as she followed the blonde into your office. When they got there, both of the knocked wildly on your door with their open hand, but when you did not answer, the firefighter opened the door and was startled at the sight of you.
You sat on the sofa with your green scrubs on, your legs bent against your chest and your head tucked into your arms. A soft sob escaped your throat and your body trembled with every breath you took- you were so lost in your own grief that you did not even noticed the knocks and the footsteps approaching your form.
As the couch deepened next to you, strong arms wrapped around your midsection and a chin rested on your upper arm while someone knelt in front of you with a loud crack of their kneecap, trying to clear a path to your face. Two cold fingers gently and deliberately pulled your chin up and revealed your tearful face. "Baby, what happened?"
"Duke died," you choked out dejected and both woman immediately knew, who you were talking about. A German shepherd that you have had in your care since he was 12 weeks old.
After 10 years of living his best life, you diagnosed him with osteosarcoma a year ago, which was treated with multi-modal therapy consisting of surgery, chemo- and pain therapies which extended survival time and improved quality of life, but was not curable.
You tried to make the last few months as comfortable as possible for him, giving him the best therapy you could possibly offer but he lost the fight much faster than you thought and you had to relieve him from his agony this morning.
Through the years of bonding with each other, his death took you extremely hard and you suffered. "Bella, mi dispiace tanto. (Beautiful, I am so sorry)" Carina spoke in a hushed tone and snuggled closer to your lower legs as her head rested on your lap. Gentle kisses were placed on your bare skin. Her fingertips gently stroking your thighs. "It´s not your fault. Sometimes things like this happen in life and there´s nothing you can do about it."
Tears were still streaming freely down your face and you looked at the brunette in front of you. You knew she was right, there was nothing more you could have done. But you expected more time. A reasonable goodbye. By the time the family arrived with him, he was already too far gone to give you one last look or run his tongue over your face one last time.
Maya had meanwhile also pulled her legs up and sat cross-legged next to you to place you on her lap with a strong but loving jerk before starting to rock you in her tight hug. Your head disappeared into her shoulder and your arms wrapped around her, holding her as if she were about to slip out of your grasp should you stop digging your fingernails into her blouse.
"You know, angel.." Maya started to speak and started to place little kisses on the skin of your neck while taking a break from her sentence. "Even if it hurts you incredibly now, you have to see the positive side; you took Duke out of his pain and gave him a better after-life. Up there.." she stretched her hand up and pointed her finger to the sky, waiting for your gaze to follow up with her, "..he can play with other dogs and finally romp around without pain."
The doctor meanwhile got up from her uncomfortable seat on the floor and placed herself on the free side next to Maya. She brushed a strand of hair out of your face and let it disappear behind your ear before wrapping her arms around you and placing soft kisses on the side of the face, that was still visible. "Don´t cry, bella. Where he is now is the most beautiful place for him."

Hi!!! I rarely request but your writing is so good I could not resist the urge. I love the Carina x Maya x Reader fics you posted, theres not enough writing for the Station 19 universe. I was hoping you could write another one, or even just a Carina x Maya. I feel like because Maya has such a dangerous job, Carina definitely slips into doctor mode every time she gets hurt or sick. Could you write where Maya gets sick with strep throat or something but Carina is unable to get her to Grey Sloan or the E.R (maybe they went on a vacation or there is bad weather) so she decides to examine Maya herself. (P.S. I hope you’re having a good day and if not tomorrow will be better💕💕)

Maya groaned and stared out the window at the crashing waves caused by the torrential downpour that was ravaging the east coast. She was inwardly cursing Carina for convincing her to come to Maine, especially when they lived so close to the beach in Seattle, but she had decided that they should leave Washington for a bit.
The two didn’t get time off together often so two weeks paid vacation at the same time was huge. So huge that her Italian girlfriend insisted that she and Maya had to see the East Coast. The blonde had argued that they could go somewhere a few hours’ drive rather than a seven-hour plane ride, but Carina had made it seem too good to refuse.
And it had been. The first week was wonderful. They’d spent time walking along the beach in the cool October weather and explored the nearby town, doing the regular touristy things. They’d found the restaurant with the best reviews and had the first proper date night in a long time, complete with fancy wine and even a violinist to serenade them.
Then the storm started. It was nice for the first day, it was relaxing. Then one day turned into two. And two into three. And how they were sitting in their beautiful house on the beach with the sea raging in front of them. There would be no walking on the sand, there would be no exploring the quiet town, there would be no anything.
The rain was coming down in sheets and Carina had been running around the house yelling in Italian about the damage and how they couldn’t stay there if the storm continued. Maya was starting to agree, it wasn’t entirely safe to be this close to the sand and she was beginning to worry that the beach would wash out.
“Car, it’ll be okay. I’ve seen beaches in Seattle handle worse than this.” The blonde croaked, wincing as the words grated against her throat. Carina, who was pacing around typing away furiously on her phone stopped and whipped around, her brow furrowing as she hyper-focused on a new target: Maya.
“What is wrong with your voice? Are you sick? Tell me your symptoms.” She had switched from panicking about the storm and settled right into her doctor persona. The firefighter rolled her eyes, trying not to wince at the action. She was finding herself wanting to let Carina do her job, but her pride was far more important than her wish for assistance.
The woman had been feeling more and more weary as the week went on, but she had chalked it up to all of the things they had been doing, refusing to admit that they hadn’t been doing anything particularly strenuous. Now, after two days of doing just about nothing, she was sort of out of excuses. She was tired, her throat was killing her, her body ached, and she couldn’t deny the presence of a fever bubbling under her skin.
“It’s nothing, I’m fine. Sit, take a breath. I made coffee, you need some.” Maya said softly, lowering her voice to try to ease the pain in her throat. It didn’t help. The level of her voice didn’t matter, it was the act of simply breathing that caused her discomfort.
Carina hmphed unhappily but went to grab herself a mug, pouring what her girlfriend considered to be way too much creamer into the dark liquid, followed by what could be considered enough sugar to feed an entire town.
“How can you drink it so sweet?” She joked, trying to put a little humor into her voice as thunder clapped loudly over the small town. The EMT jumped, frightened by the suddenness of the loud sound. A blush crept across her cheeks as she glanced over at Carina, who had a concerned expression on her face.
Her brow was furrowed, and her lips pursed, looking wholly unhappy with the situation. The rain pattered down on the roof, a nearly deafening sound. It probably would’ve been relaxing if not for the sick feeling that was growing in Maya and Carina’s nerves beginning to fray.
This was supposed to be a vacation and the OBGYN really didn’t want to beat around the bush right now. She wanted to treat the woman she loved so that they could have her feeling better as soon as possible.
She wasn’t interested in playing Maya’s “embrace the pain” game and couldn’t help but feel a little guilty for even thinking that way. It wasn’t the blonde’s fault that she was so hard on herself, but it certainly didn’t make Carina’s job of taking care of her any easier.
The moment she sat down she felt Maya curl up against her, moving so smoothly that she may not have noticed if not for the way she was shivering, her muscular body trembling like a leaf. The brunette squeezed her eyes shut and sighed, pressing her head into the woman’s hair.
“You are sick Maya. Just tell me what’s wrong.” She murmured, moving so that she could hold the woman a little bit closer. Maya nestled close, humming her unhappiness as she felt tears fill her fever-clouded eyes. She really didn’t want to be crying, it was barely 8 in the morning, it was too early to be crying. Especially over a silly little sore throat.
“Bambina, please. Don’t make me play urm…twenty questions.” Carina said gently, tilting Maya’s head up so that she could look into her beautiful green orbs. The blonde blinked quickly as she held back tears, her lower lip beginning to quiver. She hadn’t realized just how bad she felt until her girlfriend had brought it up, but now it was all that she could think about.
“It hurts.” She whimpered, her voice small and full of humiliation. She hated every part of this, admitting weakness was hard enough but it was even worse that this was happening while they were on vacation. Sure, that meant she had time to recover, but she was supposed to be spending quality time with the woman she loved, not sleeping while the brunette fed her medicine. That was no fun for anyone.
“What hurts Maya?” The doctor prodded, needing far more information than what she was being given. Maya just shrugged and pulled the throw around her shoulders as she continued to stare out the large glass windows, watching as the waves ravaged the sandy shore.
“Okay, how about we switch out that coffee for tea, yeah?” The idea of swallowing anything (even her own saliva) made the woman want to cry. At this point, she didn’t even care. She sniffled back tears and tried to hide her face, embarrassed to be crying over something so trivial. She came across people every day who were in far more dire positions handling their pain or fear with so much more grace.
“I-I can’t. My throat just hurts too much.” Maya rasped, hot tears spilling down her cheeks. Her shoulders began to heave as she cried, the action just serving to hurt her throat even more. That in turn made her cry harder, which just repeated itself in a vicious cycle.
“Hey, hey, hey. I’m here. Just tell me what’s wrong amore. Let me help.” Carina pleaded, feeling so utterly helpless. She hated when her girlfriend got sick, she hated not being able to do anything as a person she loved so much suffered in silence.
“I can’t, I don’t know! M-my throat hurts! It, it shouldn’t!” The blonde spat, her words barely comprehensible through her sobs. The Italian woman put her coffee on the small table and took Maya’s hands in hers, forcing the ill firefighter to meet her eyes.
“Maya, take a deep breath. I can help you, but you need to let me. I’m a doctor, I take care of people for a living. Let me help.” she asserted, raising her eyebrows as she tried to get through to her sweet, sick girlfriend. The blonde’s lower lip was still quivering, but she managed to quiet her sobs as she matched Carina’s slow breathing.
“Good. Now, can you let me give you an exam? I will be quick.” After a few moments, Maya nodded, her breath still hitching as she tried to calm down. Maybe she was overreacting, but she had such a hard time with the out-of-control feeling that came with being sick. She would rather be put in a blazing fire than be physically incapacitated and need to rely on others for help.
True to her word, Carina’s exam took barely five minutes. She had raced to the bedroom to get her medical bag and then began to look Maya over, starting with what she figured was wrong. She looked at the back of the blonde’s throat, sighing when she saw those familiar white splotches that she’d seen all too many times.
“And a temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Which is…too high. Stupid imperial system.” She said that last part under her breath as she mentally tried to convert the imperial temperature to the metric system that she had grown up with.
Her distaste over the different systems of measuring made Maya smile a little as she leaned back against the cushions of the couch, shivering a little.
“What’s the verdict, Doc?” She teased, getting a frown out of her girlfriend. She may have felt terrible but the cute look on Carina’s face was worth the forced humor.
“We won’t know for sure until we get a culture, but I believe you have Streptococcus. The weather is too bad to go to the Urgent Care, but we will go as soon as the rain stops, okay? For now, it's Tylenol, soup, and rest.” The brunette said, sounding fully like the doctor that she was. Maya smiled a bit from where she was laying, closing her eyes as she curled back against the comfortable sofa.
“Can rest happen first?” She mumbled; the tears having taken a lot out of her. Carina made a sound in the back of her throat as she thought it over, weighing the best option here. Technically she should have Maya take the medicine to get the fever down, but it was very hard to say ‘no’ to the woman in front of her.
“I suppose. Would you rather go back to bed?” The blonde shook her head as she lay down, taking up the ample space on the couch.
“You gotta join me. ‘s the rules.” She mumbled, her voice slurring with exhaustion. Carina chuckled quietly and climbed back onto the couch, slipping her thermometer and stethoscope back into what Maya annoyingly called her “doctor bag”. She wasn’t wrong to call it that, but it irked the brunette to no end for reasons she simply could not explain.
She pushed the bag aside and lay down against Maya, wrapping an arm around her waist. She settled in, pulling a bit of the blanket up over herself, resigning that she would probably get this illness. Strep was incredibly contagious and she refused to be away from the woman she loved.
Any time they could spend together was worth a week of antibiotics.

The Ship of the Day: Marina
Tumblr media
Name: Maya x Carina
Ship Name: Marina
Original content: Station 19 (2018) - a Greys Anatomy spin off
Ship info: Station 19 is a Greys Anatomy spin off show about a group of firefighters at fire station 19. Maya Bishop is a firefighter at station 19 who later becomes Captain of station 19. Carina DeLuca is a doctor at Grey Sloan hospital, and they meet when they both go for drinks at Joe’s – a bar near the hospital.
They begin their relationship, and it is quickly interrupted by the covid 19 pandemic. After being apart for so long they decide to move in together which is a big step in their relationship and leaves Maya, who before this relationship seemingly has commitment issues, quite frenzied. However, Maya accepts this change in their relationship just before another hurdle comes their way. Carina is going to be deported and so she is going back to Italy and going to have to work as a doctor there. However, when Carina is packing to leave Maya suggest the idea of marriage which Carina quickly turns down. They then get into a discussion about how they should’ve known by now that Maya wants to get married whereas Carina doesn’t and that Carina wants children whereas Maya doesn’t. This lead to what seems to be the end of their relationship and Carina leaves for the airport.
Tumblr media
Although we see Carina have a change of heart on the way to the airport and she turns around and finds Maya where she proposes to her in front of their friends. They then have a beautiful small wedding which is somewhat ruined by Maya finding out she is getting demoted from captain. Their relationship seems to still remain strong and after discussing it thoroughly they decide to try for a baby. They search for a sperm doner and start the process. However, Maya’s mental health starts to quickly decline and their relationship hits a rough patch when Maya starts pushing herself too hard at work and not coming home and Carina does things such as taking pregnancy tests without Maya present.
Tumblr media
After Maya nearly dies by pushing herself too hard Carina decides to take a break from their relationship to give them both space and give Maya a chance to work on her problems. Maya who is hurt by the prospect of losing Carina starts to put work into getting better by doing therapy and taking a step back from work and even learning how to cook. She then starts to try and win Carina back by trying to ask her on a first date again. They go on the date and have a good time and then try to take things slow again. Although they both admit that they miss being together and start fixing their marriage and try to get back to a strong point. They even discuss the idea of them starting to try for children again.
Type of ship: Canon Queer
Whilst Maya and Carina have had their ups and downs – they took a break that nearly needed their marriage they still ended up back together and stronger. This is a testament to this show and the creators as none of the tropes usually associated with queer couples have been applied here. Both characters are still alive, and they are happily married to each other and trying for children. The same cannot be said for lots of other sapphic ships, canon or otherwise, in media. Again, they have had their downs but none of this is because or a result of them being in a same-sex relationship but rather due to mental health issues.
Tumblr media
The fact that the creators of this show have shown the downs of a relationship as happens with many real-life relationships queer or otherwise is important. This is because it allows fans to have a canon queer relationship with flawed, real, multifaceted characters who make mistakes but ultimately learn from their mistakes both apart and together. Again, this is important because in some instances it could be easier to have the two characters split up but the creators do not let this happen which is major for the portrayal of queer women in media and to fans.

06: I Can Hardly Breathe Without You
****************************************************
They find themselves in the middle of another fight. And like so many times, Maya has no clue how it started, or even worse, how to end it.
Except for walking away.
Yet that's the one thing she's not allowed to do anymore. Not that Carina is aware of that, as it's a rule Maya only came up with for herself last night (and something she doesn't want to hear about when she can't keep to it after all). But the voice is there. Telling her to stay.
It's hard to hear it though, with their own voices being so much louder.
"Do you even want me here?" Carina cries out, more distraught than angry at this point. "If you can do so well without me?!"
Maya, pacing the room, abruptly stands still.
"Do well without you? I can hardly breathe without you!"
Carina stares at her, dark-eyed and with her mouth half open, caught between surprise and disbelief.
"Well, you sure have a special way of showing that," she says at last, her voice slightly calmer than before.
Too calm, Maya realizes.
"Maya, I- I can't do this. I have to go."
"No!" Maya exclaims the moment Carina turns around, about to make her way to the door.
She speeds towards her, catching up right when Carina moves her hand to the handle. Without saying another word she wraps her arms around her, stopping her in her tracks. Holding her body close against her own, Maya presses her cheek in the hollow between Carina's shoulder blades.
Carina sighs deeply. "Maya..."
"Don't..." Maya mutters, her voice now shaky. Fragile. "If you go now..."
Despite Maya's firm grip, Carina manages to turn towards her.
"Hey, hey," she soothes her, "I'm an hour late for work, that's all. But I'll come back." She cups Maya's face, more gently than ever, and wipes her tears away with her thumbs. "I'll always come back."
"How do I know?" Maya asks, warily looking up at her wife. Their eyes meet, and Carina holds her gaze, not being the type to look away.
Seeing Maya like this, the cause of their argument suddenly feels irrelevant - as it so often does. She's not denying anything. She knows they've got things to figure out. But the question of staying or leaving isn't one of them.
She shakes her head, slowly, then pulls Maya in for another tight hug. With her lips now close to her ear, she whispers, "Because I can't breathe without you either."

Serendipity (41/45)
Fandom: Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy
Characters: Maya Bishop & Carina DeLuca
Summary: A chance meeting at a bar leads to these two idiots falling in love. Follows canon and fills in the gaps of their relationship that we didn’t get to see on screen.
Note: This chapter leads into episode 4x12. There will be some themes from 4x12 picked up in some of what is to come, but no specific chapter for it. Episode 4x13 is mostly Ben and Dean floating in water, so that means we're skipping ahead slightly in episodes (but not in storytelling) to episode 4x14 for the next chapter. I’ve said before that this fic ends at the wedding, which means 3 episodes and (if I stick to my chapter outlines) 4 chapters left. Thank you for sticking with this fic! I appreciate your time, comments, likes and reblogs so much. 😊
Also @ AO3.

We’ll Be Okay
I love our story. I love it so much because in every chapter you make me fall in love with you all over again. - Jewel E. Ann
Carina straightens her blouse and rolls her shoulders, taking a deep breath before knocking on the door sharply three times.
“Come in!”
She steps inside the Chief’s office to find Bailey sat at her desk, shoes off and feet resting on the edge of the table, reading through some sort of report. She looks up and smiles when she sees her visitor.
“Carina!”
In normal times, she would feel compelled to give her a hug – even though Miranda Bailey is not really the hugging type – but she is respectful of Covid protocols. Instead, she drops her feet to the floor and swivels her chair to face her, gesturing at the chair on the opposite side of her desk.
“I’m sorry to come by unexpectedly,” Carina says as she sits down, but Bailey waves it away.
“You’re welcome here any time,” Bailey says. Her eyes light up. “Does this mean you’re ready to come back to work?”
Carina takes a shaky breath. “Actually, no,” she says. “I, uh, I came tell you that I’m leaving.”
“The hospital?”
“Seattle,” Carina says.
Bailey looks confused, furrowing her brow and shaking her head a little.
“My visa is expiring and I have to go back to Italy,” Carina explains.
Bailey looks at her blankly. “Can’t you just… get another visa?”
Carina can’t help but smile. If only it were that simple.
“No. The immigration office is closed and I can’t get a new visa until they reopen.”
Bailey opens her mouth and Carina knows she is about to offer to talk to the hospital’s lawyers, to do whatever it takes to keep her here, but she cuts her off first.
“And I want to go back,” Carina says. “It means I get to go back and see my family.  And I can take a piece of Andrea back to our childhood home.”
Tears pool in the corners of Bailey’s eyes at the mention of her brother and she blinks them away quickly.
“When?”
“Three weeks,” Carina says.
Technically, nineteen days. She has been counting down in her head.
“How long do you think you’ll be gone?”
“It’s hard to know,” Carina says. “My lawyer thinks it will be at least a couple of months.”
Bailey’s face falls at the news. “What about Bishop?”
“She’s talking about coming with me, if we can make it work,” Carina says. They both know it is a long shot; even if McAllister agrees to her leave of absence, they have to convince the Italian authorities to let her into the country.
She also knows that Maya is up against it at work, a combination of the pandemic and the feud with the police department. She comes home exhausted after every shift, sometimes cheerful but more recently frustrated by work politics. She is trying to hold it together for her team at work, and trying to hold it together for Carina at home, and sometimes Carina worries that no-one is holding her together. It is a lot to ask her to come to Italy with her, as much as she wants her to – and she really does want her to; but she knows that the reality is that it will be hard to make it work with everything else going on.
Bailey leans back in her seat. “I still remember the day you walked into this office,” she says. “All ‘let me get women to masturbate in your MRI machine’.”
She puts on a terrible Italian accent that makes Carina laugh.
“You know, that day, I was wearing the most ridiculous pair of high heels and so fed up with the patriarchy. Webber, Hunt, they got to wear their boring old shoes – but me? I was stuck in four-inch heels that hurt like a son-of-a…”
She trails off, suddenly remembering where she is and who she is talking to. Carina is looking at her with a look of amusement on her face.
“Anyway, it’s what made me say yes – and I’m really glad I did.”
“Me too,” Carina says. “I’m so grateful to you, Doctor Bailey. You’ve given me a home here. And because of you, I got to stay here in Seattle, I got to spend time with Andrea and see him get better.” Her expression turns solemn. “And I got to be there when he died, when it mattered the most.”
“You know, that young man,” Bailey says with a shake of her head, “…made me so damn proud. You both did, that day at his intervention. Watching him get the help he needed to get better, seeing him come back stronger. He was a wonderful doctor and an even better human being.”
Tears fall down Carina’s cheeks now and she doesn’t bother to wipe them away. She has learned that there is no shame in her grief.
“He really was.”
“You know, I…” Bailey stumbles over her words, getting choked up as the tears return to her eyes. “I look at Tuck and Joey, and I’m glad they have each other. It makes it a hell of a lot easier knowing that those two boys have each other’s back – just like you and Andrew.”
Carina shoulders shake as she tries to control her emotions. Bailey smiles kindly at her.
“You’ll come back.”
It is a statement rather than a question, and Carina realises how easy it is to say yes.
“If you’ll have me,” Carina says.
Bailey smiles. “You’re always welcome here. I mean that. Your job is yours for as long as you want it.”
“Thank you. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.”
Bailey wipes the tears from her cheeks as she composes herself. “I do.”
Carina tips her head and looks curious.
“Is there any chance you can come back and work a few shifts before you leave? I know it’s asking a lot but if we’re gonna lose you for a while, I need to know that the doctors you leave behind are gonna be at least half as good as you.”
Despite the compliment, Carina feels her chest tighten. It was one thing to come back in a few months’ time, once she has said her final farewells to her brother, but now? She knows she is stronger now, more in control of her grief, and she feels indebted to Bailey and the hospital for all they have done for her. With a deep breath, she nods slowly.
“Okay.”
They make small talk for a while. Carina had not expected the meeting to be so emotional; she thought Bailey would be mad, not upset, and it has taken her by surprise. Still, Andrew was right about this place feeling like family and she has felt all the love from her friends and colleagues since Andrew’s death. She walks through the halls of the hospital afterwards in a slight daze. She sees some familiar faces on her way out – Teddy and Owen and Maggie, all who check in on her and express their sorrow when she tells them her news.
She promises to return, and means it. Once she is back in her car, her heart tells her to go to the station and see Maya, for the comfort she craves and to have the difficult conversation she knows they need to have about her trip to Italy.
* * * * * * * * * *
Maya sits in the passenger seat of the fire engine, trying to focus on writing her notes for her incident report while the team chat around her. She doesn’t participate in their conversation, just listens to their usual banter. She guesses Theo is the name of the guy Vic met on her run a couple of months ago, back when Carina was moving into her apartment. Their apartment. She tries not to think too much about everything that has happened in such a short space of time, because she can’t wrap her head around it, but she knows how good it feels to come home every day to Carina. To see her belongings mixed up with hers. To smell the lingering scent of her perfume. To taste the baked treats she leaves in the kitchen. It might have taken some time to get used to it, but now Maya can’t imagine her not being there.
It is why it hurts so much to think about Carina going back to Italy and why her heart is pulling her to go with her, even though her head is telling her to stay and deal with everything going on at work. Dean’s lawsuit against the police department is giving her no end of headaches, Battalion Chief Gregory keeps turning up unexpectedly on scene and she really didn’t appreciate the visit from Dixon this morning.
She lifts her hand to her head where she rubs the back of her neck for a moment. His comment about her hair cut irritates her, even though she knows better than to let that vile little man under her skin.
She is aware of Sullivan sat in the back of the truck. She has to remember that he is married to her best friend to stop herself from wanting to take his smug smile off his face, because he made it pretty clear today that he is gunning for a promotion. He might phrase it like he wants to do her a favour but she recognises the ambition in him. It’s the same ambition she has herself.
“Probie,” she calls out, using his rank to subtly put him in his place. “Good call today.”
She has to give credit where it is due. There was something joyful about watching her team skate around the ice and put out the moving fire. It was unusual, that’s for sure.
Five minutes later and they pull up outside the station. The doors to the barn are closed, which is odd because Vic radioed ahead to let them know they were on their way back.
“Is something going on?” Vic wonders out loud.
“I don’t know,” Maya muses.
They head into the station via the main door, finding the reception desk empty, and heading into the barn where they find Carina and Ben tending to a pregnant patient on the hard floor.
“One more big push, Nancy, okay?” she hears Carina say.
“What the…” Sullivan exclaims.
“Did Bailey kick you out of the hospital mid-delivery?” Maya says, learning quickly that Carina isn’t in the mood for jokes.
“Maya, I need you; and everyone else, clear the area and stand by.”
“Is Wayne okay?” the woman on the floor asks.
“Who’s Wayne?” Travis asks.
“The husband,” Ben tells him.
Maya kneels down beside them and pulls on a pair of surgical gloves. “And where is he?”
“Hospital.”
“Shouldn’t she be there?” Vic points out.
“Okay, if you're not gonna help, get the hell out of here!” Carina snaps at them. “Thank you!”
Knowing that their presence isn’t needed or wanted, Vic, Travis and Sullivan retreat out of the barn.
Carina turns her attention back to her patient “Okay, you got this. You got this, Nancy.”
Nancy moans through her contraction.
“Good, give me one more.”
“You got this, Nancy,” Ben encourages her. “Come on.”
“One more, Nancy.”
Nancy lets out one, long guttural cry and Maya watches in awe as the small baby slips into Carina’s hands. She remembers how terrified she had been when she had delivered Pru, on the floor of the shower room, yet Carina makes it look so easy.
The barn is filled with the sound of a newborn’s cries.
“You did it!” Carina cheers, holding the little girl up to show her off to her mama, before handing her to Ben.
Nancy cries and laughs with delight and exhaustion, her head dropping back on to the pillow that supports her.
“Good Nancy,” Carina says as she wipes the baby clean from the muck and mucus that covers her. “Okay, now let’s cut the cord.”
“Hey, little girl,” Ben says softly. “Welcome to station nineteen.”
Nancy lifts her head as far as she is able. "Girl?”
Carina smiles behind her mask and nods, as Ben answers with a simple, “yeah”, the baby crying in his hands. He looks at Maya who, now wrapped up in a gown, holds her hands out to take the baby from him so that he can help Carina with the last step.
This is the first time, she realises, that she has got to see Carina at work. She watches how methodical and careful she is, doing everything with such ease and tenderness. Her focus is on the medicine, but she makes sure her patient is comfortable and relaxed as she works.
“We’re almost there,” Carina says gently. “Maya, why don’t you take the baby up to Nancy so that she can hold her in a minute.”
Maya nods and stands, cradling the newborn in her arms. She is so small and light compared to some of the other deliveries she has been involved in, her little fists curling into a ball. Her eyes are closed, her face still squished from the delivery, but she is cute as hell.
“And we're done, the placenta is out. And uh…” Carina pauses and Maya looks down at her, noticing the small crinkle in her forehead.
“Okay, sorry. I need to do one more thing,” Carina says.
Tired and weary, Nancy reacts with frustration. “I thought you said you were done.”
“I know, but there is some bleeding, so I need to do some fundal massage,” Carina explains.
Maya doesn’t like the sound of that, and she has no idea what fundal massage is, but Carina remains calm and in control, which leaves Maya feeling confident that any risk to the patient currently giving birth on the floor of the barn is manageable.
“No, please, don't do that,” Nancy begs, squirming under Carina’s touch. “I just want to hold my little girl.”
“I know,” Carina sympathises. “We've gotten this far, Nancy. We just need to stop the bleeding so you can hold your baby girl forever.”
Tears are flowing down Nancy’s cheeks by this point and Maya holds the baby closer to her chest, wanting to protect the little girl from her mother’s cries.
“Please stop it!”
“You got this,” Carina says, having no choice but to persevere through her patient’s protestations.
“Please! Stop it!”
“Hey, Nancy, Nancy,” Ben tries to get her attention. “We need your uterus to contract so that it can clamp down on the blood vessels. Now, you can do this. Just hang on.”
Nancy whimpers as Carina puts pressure on her stomach.
“Good, Nancy, you've got this.”
There is no sign of panic or concern on Carina’s face as she works quickly, massaging the belly until she feels the uterus contracting under her touch.
“Okay, good, good, good, good, good,” Carina says. “Good! You got this! Good, good, good, good! Okay!”
Carina moves and checks for more bleeding.
“Okay, I don't see any major lacerations, so we're good.”
She turns and looks up at Maya, giving her a nod, telling her that it is okay to take the baby to her mama.
“Hey Nancy,” Ben says, pointing his thumb towards where Maya approaches with the newborn in her arms.
Maya kneels down beside her and places the baby on Nancy’s chest, smiling as the new mom gets to really see her for the first time. The baby gurgles happily, knowing she has been reunited with her mama.
“Wayne, please be okay,” Nancy prays out loud.
“All right, Nancy, let's get you up,” Ben says.
Ben lifts Nancy’s shoulders so that Maya can place another pillow underneath her, propping her up. Nancy looks at her surroundings, taking it all in.
“Wait, did I walk into a fire station in labour with two doctors?”
“Yes, and I'm an OB,” Carina says, placing a blanket over Nancy’s legs.
“Well, I guess sometimes the crises, they come to us,” Ben says.
Maya catches Carina’s eyes and stares lovingly at her. She can’t help it. She lucked out the day Carina walked into Joe’s and found her sitting alone at the bar, with only a glass of whisky for company. She thought she had seen every part of Carina – the fierce side, the gentle side, the protective side, the loving side, the grieving side, the angry side. Today, she got to see the doctor part of her. It is impressive and inspiring – and kinda sexy, she can’t deny that.
“Is the aid car on its way back?” Ben asks, interrupting her thoughts.
“I’ll go check.”
With one last glance at Carina, Maya strips herself of her gown and gloves, then heads into her office and grabs her radio, calling through to the aid car. Andy answers within a few seconds to let her know that she’s on her way back from Central Seattle Hospital.
“Andy’s five minutes away,” Maya says when she walks back into the barn. “Wayne’s at Central Seattle, she’ll take Nancy there too.”
She looks Carina, in case she wants Nancy to go to her team at Grey Sloan. Carina nods.
“I know Doctor Peters there, she’s one of the best,” Carina says, then looks at Nancy. “She’ll take good care of you two, I promise.”
“Thank you, thank you,” Nancy says, holding out her hand.
Carina takes it and squeezes it with a smile. “You’re welcome, Nancy.”
“Why don’t you go and get cleaned up,” Ben suggests. “I’ll stay with Nancy until the aid car gets here.”
“Are you sure?”
Ben nods. “You’ve done your job, I’ve got it from here.”
“You’ve both done a great job,” Maya says. “I’ll get Cutler to clean up this mess.”
Once she has tracked down Cutler and set him to work in the barn, Maya heads into the shower room, where Carina is washing her hands in the sink. They share a smile in the mirror as Maya closes the door behind her and comes up beside her.
“Watching you bring that life into the world like it was nothing, like it was just another day – which, I guess, for you it is… I think I fell in love with you all over again.”
Maya takes a step closer, her hand resting on the bottom of Carina’s back, with a telling smile on her face.
Carina grins back. “Hmm, you did?”
“Mmm hmm.”
Their lips meeting a quick, soft kiss. When they part, Maya leans back against the counter.
“How'd it go with Bailey?”
Carina sighs. “She made me cry,” she says, drying her hands on some paper towels and walking around Maya to put them in the trashcan. “The good kind.”
Maya takes a deep breath, nervous suddenly about doing something that might make Carina cry again – and she doesn’t want to be the cause of any more tears, but she knows they need to talk about it.
“Carina, with everything going on here, with the tension with PD and…”
Before she can continue, Carina interrupts her. “I know.”
Maya looks up at her in surprise.
“You have to stay. Your whole country’s in crisis, you can't leave when there's such a desperate need.”
Maya looks guiltily at her, but Carina won’t let her feel bad about it.
“It's okay. It's one of the many reasons I love you.”
“I really wanted to go, I promise,” Maya says, shaking her head with frustration. “I just keep thinking of Chief McCallister looking at my request to leave and thinking that this is why we don't put women in positions of power.”
“Right, because she will run off with her lady lover,” Carina says sardonically.
Maya drops her head. Carina’s understanding does nothing to ease her guilt.
“We'll be okay,” Carina assures her. “I'll be back before you know it.”
Maya looks up with a sad look on her face and Carina steps closer, a teasing smile on her face, trying to raise a smile on her face.
“I'll be back.”
She leans in closer.
“Promise?”
Carina nods before curling her hand around her neck and drawing her in for another kiss, lingering this time. Maya melts into her embrace, sliding a hand around her waist and grasping her blouse, hugging her tight against her body.
“Mmm, what am I gonna do without your kisses while you’re gone?” Maya murmurs.
Carina smiles and traces her lips along Maya’s jawline until they find her neck, where she sucks gently.
“Hey,” Maya scolds her lightly, although she doesn’t pull back right away. “You’re gonna get me in trouble.”
Carina simply grins at her and Maya loves to see her smile, despite the decision they have made together.
“Will you stay for dinner?”
“Are you sure? I don’t want everyone to start thinking I spend too much time here,” Carina says.
“They won’t,” Maya says. “They love having you around.”
Carina looks sceptical – especially after how bossy she was at the testing drive last week. She is astute enough to know that she was unbearable at times that day, even if she had good reasons.
“Besides,” Maya continues, “I want to spend as much time with you as I can before you go.”
Carina can’t say no to that, so she nods. “Okay.”
“I need to go write up my reports, I think the rest of the team are up in the break room if you want to go chill?”
“I’d rather spend my time with you,” Carina says sweetly.
Maya laughs. “Watching me write up reports?”
Carina shrugs. “I can help you with your report on Nancy and Wayne.” She leans in with a small smile on your face. “Maybe give you a back rub to loosen your muscles.”
Leaving the suggestion hanging, Carina kisses her once more, light and quick, before turning on her heel and walking out into the locker room. Maya follows and they make their way towards her office.
“Uh, Captain?”
Maya turns just as Jack walks down the stairs. His face is ashen and he chews his bottom lip, and Maya’s instinct tells her he is not about to delivery good news.
“You might wanna look at this.”
Maya takes the cell phone from his outstretched hand and presses play on the video on the screen. For the next eight minutes and forty-six seconds, Maya and Carina watch as the Minneapolis police department murder a black man.
“Oh mio Dio,” Carina says softly.
Maya’s mind goes to the day, not long ago, when the Seattle police department tackled Dean to the ground by her feet, pressing down on his back as they handcuffed him. She sees Sullivan’s face, standing in the middle of a circle of cops, all pointing their guns at him. Her stomach churns with anger and despair.
“Where is everyone?”
“Upstairs in the break room,” Jack says.
Maya sighs. She knows she should go and speak to them, but has no idea what she is going to say.
“I should go,” Carina says.
Maya turns and opens her mouth to object, but Carina cuts her off.
“It’s not the right time for me to be here, bambina.”
Maya knows she is right. “I’ll call you later?”
Carina leans down and kisses her cheek – a far cry from the seductive kisses she was enjoying just a few moments ago. With a heavy sigh, Maya makes her way upstairs, with Jack in tow. The television now off, the team sits dumbstruck in the break room.
“Are you okay?” Maya asks, only to be met with silence. “Sorry, stupid question.”
No-one reacts to her.
“Do you wanna go home? I can call in back-up to cover the rest of the shift,” she offers.
There are a few shakes of the head, rejecting her offer.
“Well, the offer’s there, if you want it. Don’t worry about your chores, just… get some rest, if you can.”
The rest of the shift passes quietly. The team are sombre, choosing to spend the evening in their own bunk rooms. Maya takes charge of making dinner, wanting to stay visible. She thinks about ordering them to eat, to bring them together, but no-one is hungry and she isn’t about to berate them for that.
The aid car gets called out just before midnight, and Andy and Dean disappear into the dark night. When they return an hour later, they barely acknowledge her presence as they pass her the paperwork and head to their bunks.
Maya doesn’t sleep. She leaves her office door open in case someone wants to find her – but no-one does. It is not like she can offer them any words of comfort right now anyway. She writes up her reports and does some of the forgotten chores. Ben joins her at one point and together they clean the fire engine. It takes a couple of hours since it is only the two of them and they don’t speak for the entire time.
Maya wants to ask him if he is okay, if he wants to talk, but she doesn’t because she has no idea what she will say next.
An emergency call comes in just before five o’clock and, despite their obvious grief, the team pick themselves up and jump into action. It is a fire at a home five blocks to the east, parents and their three children trapped in a bedroom at the front of the house. They work quickly and efficiently as they always do. Dean and Travis use the ladder truck to bring the family to safety, while the rest of the team point their hoses at the flames to put out the fire.
There is no celebrating when their job is done and everyone is safe. The engine and ladder truck stay silent on the way back to the station. They tidy their gear away, only talking when they need to, staying polite with a ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when needed.
They leave as soon as it turns eight o’clock, a wave goodbye as they pass her office. Maya is about to pack her bag and leave when her phone pings – a message from her mom, telling her that she is outside and ready to talk.
Maya sighs. She has been trying to speak to her mom ever since she got her message telling her that she was moving back in with her dad, but keeps getting the brush off. Katherine Bishop really knows how to pick the wrong time. Feeling weary after a sleepless night, Maya makes her way outside and throws her bag into the trunk of her car, before walking over to where her mom is waiting nearby.
“Hey Mom,” she greets her fondly.
“Hi love,” Katherine says.
The confident woman who had met her for lunch a couple of months ago is gone, and the small, meek woman that Maya grew up with is back, and Maya’s heart aches for her.
“I’m happy to see you,” Maya says. “Are you okay?”
When Katherine doesn’t answer straight away, Maya tips her head towards the sidewalk and starts to walk. Katherine falls into step beside her. They make it a couple of blocks before she starts to talk.
“I know what you’re thinking.”
“You do?”
Katherine sighs. “That I’m crazy to have gone back to your father.”
“Maybe – a little,” Maya says after a pause.
She runs her hand absentmindedly through her short locks. She never told her mom the story of why she cut her hair and she is pretty sure that her dad won’t have told her – or, if he did, it would be his version of the truth, which wouldn’t be very truthful at all. She wonders what her mom would think if she told him, what excuses she would make for him this time.
“After everything he did – to you, to me, to Mason. After all it took for you to leave him, why would you go back to him?”
“He’s changed,” Katherine says. She sees Maya roll her eyes. “I know you don’t believe it.”
“I don’t,” Maya interjects.
“But it’s scary out there right now, sweetheart, and your dad promised to take care of me.”
‘At what cost?’ Maya thinks to herself, although she doesn’t say it out loud.
“If it’s about money…”
“It’s not,” Katherine says. “Your dad has his faults…”
Maya scoffs at that.
“…but he loves me. We’ve both made mistakes and we’ve forgiven each other for them.”
Maya stops and spins to look at her mom, her face aghast. It is happening again and she can’t let it. She needs to do more this time.
“Mom, you did nothing that needs forgiveness. Nothing. Can’t you see what he’s doing?”
“Maya, it’s more complicated than that,” Katherine says. “Your dad and I, we have thirty-five years of history, of loving each other, of raising you kids.”
Maya shakes her head. “I don’t trust him.”
“Then trust me,” Katherine says, reaching out and squeezing her hand.
It doesn’t sit well with Maya but she can see that her mom’s mind is made up. Her shoulders sag under yet another weight – her girlfriend going to Italy for God-knows how long, her team in distress, her station at war with the police department.
“Will you promise me something?”
Katherine looks at her hesitantly, expecting to be berated again.
“If he does anything, if he yells or throws things or touches you, then please – please – call me? I don’t care what time of day it is, I will come and pick you up.”
It is the first time that she sees her mom waver, her eyes blinking at double speed. Eventually, she nods.
“Okay, I promise.”
They keep walking. Maya talks a little bit about work, but leaves out the stressful parts, not wanting her mom to worry. She tells her about Carina’s brother and her visa expiring, and how she has to go back to Italy for a while. The sadness must be written all over her face because she feels her mom’s hand on the small of her back.
“I’m sorry, love,” Katherine says.
“We’ll be fine,” Maya says, as much for herself as for her mom. “It’s not forever.”
She just wishes she knew how long they would be apart.
They walk for a little over an hour, arriving back at the station just before nine-thirty.
“Take care of yourself, okay?” Maya says.
“I will, sweetheart,” Katherine says. “You too.”
Maya watches as she gets into her car and drives away, feeling despondent. There is a part of her that wants to follow her, to check that she really is okay, to persuade her to leave him again. But she doesn’t. She doesn’t have the energy to fight her father right now. All she can do is hope that her mom doesn’t end up regretting her decision.
She makes the short journey home and ignores the elevator, taking the stairs up to their apartment, her legs burning at the strain.
She can hear the soft lull of Italian music playing from outside and it makes her smile. When she steps inside, Carina is curled up on the couch, a blanket over her legs and a magazine in her hands. She looks up when she hears Maya coming through the front door.
“Buongiorno.”
“Good morning,” Maya says. She drops her bag onto the floor and walks over to the couch to greet her girlfriend with a kiss.
“Did you get caught up at work?” Carina says, noticing the time.
With everything that has been going on, Maya hasn’t told her yet about her mom moving back in with her dad. It never feels like the right time, bringing in her own family drama when Carina is grieving so heavily. She doesn’t have the energy to talk about it right now so she buries it for another day.
“Just making sure everything is in order.”
Carina doesn’t pick up on her lie. “How was last night?” she asks, closing her magazine and dropping it on to the table.
“Awful,” Maya says. “I didn’t really know what to say to them, so I said nothing – which felt cowardly.”
She kicks off her sneakers and hangs her jacket up, then takes a seat on the couch by Carina’s legs.
“I don’t know what to do,” she admits. “I don’t know how to help them. I don’t even know if they want my help, if it’s my place.”
“I don’t think avoiding the conversation will help,” Carina says gently.
Maya sighs. “I know.”
“Can’t the department help?” Carina asks.
“You think someone like McAllister is going to care?” Maya says. “Although…”
Her words fall away as her mind starts working.
“What?” Carina prompts her.
“I do know someone who might be able to help,” Maya says slowly. “The psychologist who came in to talk to us after Rigo died, Diane? She stopped by a while ago to see how everyone was doing during the pandemic.” She scrunches her face. “Is that a terrible idea? Calling in a therapist?”
“I don’t know,” Carina says. “Maybe you should talk to Diane about it, she what she thinks?”
As she muses the idea, Maya looks down and notices the medical journal that Carina was reading.
“You doing some research?”
“Just catching up on what I’ve missed,” Carina says. “I told Doctor Bailey that I’d work a few shifts at the hospital before I go to Italy.”
She looks a little apprehensive and Maya places a comforting hand on her leg.
“How do you feel about that?”
“Nervous,” Carina admits. “But okay, I think. It’s just a few shifts, maybe it’ll do me some good to go back there and face it. Bailey said there would be a job waiting for me when I get back and I do want to work there again.”
When she gets back.
She hasn’t even gone yet and Maya is already waiting for that day to come.
She shifts her body and manoeuvres her way in between Carina’s legs, resting her head on her chest. Carina wraps her arms around her, dropping a kiss on her head. Maya thinks about her mom and how she doesn’t get to have this, how she doesn’t get to have someone who loves and cares for her like she deserves.
The lack of sleep catches up with her and her eyes start to droop, the warmth of Carina’s embrace lulling her into a slumber. She is almost asleep when something on the sideboard catches her eye.
“What’s that?” she asks sleepily.
“Hmm?”
“The vase on the side there.”
She feels a slight shift in Carina’s mood underneath her.
“Oh. It’s an urn, not a vase,” Carina says. “Andrea’s ashes got delivered yesterday.”
The urn looks small – too small for the large presence that he was.
“I need to fill out some paperwork so that I can take some of it with me on the plane.”
Maya lifts her head just enough to look at her. “Only some of it?”
“I thought I’d scatter some up at Hamilton Viewpoint, and maybe take some to Wisconsin too, when I can,” Carina says. “Leave him in the places he loved the most.”
Maya thinks back to their conversation yesterday. “You said that you wanted to take him to a beach in Italy, where you spent time with your mom?”
“Si, in San Lorenzo,” Carina says.
“Will you tell me about it? Tell me your memories?”
Carina smiles as Maya rests her head on her chest once more, waiting for her story.
“Mama used to take us there when we were little, for at least two weeks every summer. I was seven, I think, the first time. Andrea was three.”
“Did your dad ever go with you?”
“Sometimes. Not very often,” Carina says. “Most of the time, he would stay behind and work, and it would just be the three of us. We’d swim in the sea and make sandcastles and eat all the different flavours of gelato we could.”
“They sound like happy memories,” Maya says.
“They are,” Carina says. She starts to laugh. “There was this one time, when Andrea was six, maybe seven, he was being such a little brat. Mama had gone to find us lunch, so I suggested we play a game where I built a sandcastle around him. I ended up burying him in the sand, really deep, so he couldn’t get out. He was so cross, his little face turned red while he was trying to escape.”
Maya laughs with her. “And I thought you were the lovely big sister.”
“Most of the time,” Carina says. “Mama came back and I was waiting for her to yell at me, but she laughed – and that made Andrea even more cross.”
“How long did you leave him in the sand?”
“Not long,” Carina says. “Maybe thirty minutes?”
“Carina!”
Carina laughs again. “He didn’t speak to me for the rest of the day.”
“He forgave you eventually though,” Maya says.
“Yeah, he did.” Carina sighs. “I miss him.”
“I know you do. I wish I could be there when you scatter his ashes,” Maya says. “I’m sorry.”
Carina can hear the guilt in her voice. “Maya,” she says, poking her ribs gently until she looks up at her. “You’ve been there for everything, since the second he died. Don’t feel guilty for missing this part. It’s just one part, I can do it by myself.” She smiles. “But I do want to take you there one day, to meet my family and see the places in my stories. I want to share it all with you one day. Andrea wanted it too.”
“He did?”
“Si, he did,” Carina says.
Maya smiles and shuffles up Carina’s body to kiss her.
“Well, I was his favourite.”
Carina chuckles and rolls her eyes playfully, snuggling back into the cushions as Maya drops her head again.
“You’re never going to let me forget that, are you?”
“Nope,” Maya says, smiling when she feels Carina’s arms tighten around her.
She sighs against her chest.
“It’s going to be okay, bella,” Carina says. “You’re an amazing captain. You’re smart and resilient and you care so much. You’ll figure it out, you always do.”
“What am I going to do without all your affirmations?” Maya says.
‘What am I going to do without you?’ she thinks.

…………………………………………………………………
Jo was typing away on her laptop and working on the paper again. She watched her mouse, David Bowie, from a camera she had set up in the lap. At least this way she could still do what she wanted without having to sneak out. However, she was still hoping to get the results from the lab on David Bowie's latest blood test. His liver enzymes were slightly elevated. He was four years old now and she wanted to make sure he wasn't declining in health naturally or because of the mini livers.
There was a knock at the door and Jo jumped with a start and slammed the laptop shut before she showed it under her pillow.
“Come in,” Jo yelled as she tried to act natural.
Carina walked to the room holding something behind her back. Jo sighed and held out her arm, turning away so she didn't have to see the IV being put in again. However, instead, Carina placed a cool drink in her hand. When Jo looked back Carina simply held a small container containing a few pills. Jo raised her eyebrow at her as she turned back around and took a sip from the drink. It was one of the mocktails they usually made for their patients after labor. Jo smiled as she tasted the red cherry flavoring that she liked. Carina still held out the pills and Jo took them with little reluctance.
After she swallowed them Carina sat down and pulled the stool beside her. She didn't say anything for a half second and Jo wondered why as she studied Carina's expression. It was surprisingly natural. Yet, she would for sure Carina would give her another scolding and she had every right to.
“The pills I just gave you are, a prenatal, your heart pill, and the Tylenol as I know you still need it. This should be sufficient enough. So long as you stay hydrated, I see no reason for you to be on an IV including the fact that most of your medications can be taken orally.”
“What's the catch,” Jo said, narrowing her eyes at her, sensing that there was something more.
“There is none,” Carina said as Jo raised her eyebrows. “You are not at risk for preterm labor, and your baby is extremely healthy. If it was up to me I would discharge you this afternoon.”
“Really?” Jo asked in surprise. “Does Cristina or Alex know about this?”
“I've already talked with Cristina about it,” Carina said, but then she frowned. “However, it's Alex who isn't quite on board yet.”
“Of course,” Jo said with an eye roll.
“He is only worried for your safety, however overzealous.”
Jo nodded and she took another sip of her drink. “He's been really anxious recently. He doesn't sleep well and he's had nightmares. He barely eats and he complains of heartburn, but I know it's an anxious stomach. He's so worried about me, and I can see it in his eyes, but when I ask he says he's just tired. But I don't believe him.”
“Nor do I,” Carina said with a nod.
“I don't know what to do,” Jo admitted to her as she looked down at her wedding rings. “When I was struggling with my mental health, I didn't want to talk to anybody, not even Alex. And I think he's feeling the same thing.”
“I know, Maya was the same way,” Carina said as she looked down as well, playing with her wedding rings. “However Alex has seen you take on your own mental health issues, and will follow your lead to better health, with a little pushing in the right direction.”
Carina reached out and grasped one of Jo's hands, giving it a squeeze. Jo nodded as well. “I’ll talk to Cristina. I think in this situation she can help him more than anyone. And I need to apologize to you for the way I've been acting. I'm sorry.”
Jo glanced back up at her, with a sheepish look as Carina gave her a small smile. Carina leaned forward and wrapped her in a hug. “I only worry for you, because I care about you Jo, deeply. You are a dear friend and a trusted colleague. I love you like a sister, I don’t want to lose you.”
Jo agreed with the nod as she teared up. “I love you like a sister too.”
Carina smiled as she pulled Jo in for another hug. Carina clung to her before she sighed and let go, getting up and hanging Jo her phone. “You’re still an inpatient and you're grounded, and are to remain in your room until you're discharged. However, you are free to call Cristina and Alex. I hope you are able to help him.”
Jo nodded, she knew her punishment was only fair as she pulled up Cristina’s number and pressed call as Carina left her alone.
…………………………………………………………………
“You have to do something about Jo,” Alex yelled as he burst into the office Cristina was working in. Cristina had texted him, to have him come talk to her about Jo. Alex was hoping that she could talk some sense into Jo and get her to stay in her room.
“What do you mean, specifically?” Cristina asked although she didn’t look up from the paper she was writing. She squinted even as she was wearing glasses.
“Well, I just mean that she's like she's running all over the hospital. No one can find her and she takes out her IV. I just found her working in her lab with mice,” Alex explained as he started pacing in front of her.
“Oh yeah the mini livers, how's that going?” Cristina asked, finally looking up at him.
“I don't know,” Alex said, throwing up his hands. “She said something about trials, but that's still probably at least a year away. I worry about her. She shouldn't be with mice, especially unhealthy ones. What if they bite her or give her some kind of disease? With her heart, she can’t survive that.”
Cristina shrugged and he glared at her then shook his head.
“But this is what I'm talking about. She's completely distracted and focused on working rather than healing like she should be. She should be resting in bed. She should be, I don't know, knitting baby stuff or something.”
“Jo knitting?” Cristina scoffed with a laugh.
“Well I mean she could if she wanted to,” Alex said as he looked over at her.
“Alex, what's your heart rate?” Cristina asked, pausing and finally shutting the laptop as she looked up at him.
“I don't know,” Alex said, pausing as he listened to his heartbeat for a second. “Maybe 120 or something.”
Cristina rolled her eyes. “Well put your fingers to your neck and test for it.”
“Why is this important?” Alex continued his pacing, but Cristina got up and stopped him as she put her hands on his shoulders and put her fingers against his neck.
Alex paused for a breath. He was breathing heavily, but he had been pacing back and forth and running all over the hospital looking for Jo. They had also just had a fight and his emotions were high.
“Your heart rate is elevated, 187,” Cristina said as she moved his hand to his shoulder giving it a squeeze. “I'm sure your blood pressure isn't much better.”
Cristina pulled out a cuff and placed it on his arm as she took his blood pressure, she frowned at the results and showed it to him. Alex looked up in surprise. “That can't be right, that's way too high okay.”
“Come on, let's go sit down and take a couple of deep breaths,” Cristina said as Alex nodded and they both went over to the couch.
Alex said he knew what she was doing as he let out a sigh. Before he breathed in and out. He remembered the song the kids used to sing, ‘One little breath blew away the clouds.’ As he breathed out. ‘Then in came the sun and melted the snow.’ He often sang it with Helena and Luna as it helped them with their meltdowns and tantrums.
He sat down next to Cristina as she took his blood pressure again and smiled. “Much better.”
“What's the point of all this though?” Alex asked, calmly, but he wasn’t sure where she was going with all this.
“When was the last time you had a panic attack?” Cristina softly asked him as he shook his head.
“It was when Jo was rushed into surgery.”
“Let me rephrase this, when was the last time your chest was so tight you couldn't breathe?”
“Are you saying that I'm having heart issues now?”
“No, but I'm guessing the last time you felt that was, was this afternoon, when Jo wasn't there in her room.
“It’s not that she wasn't there, it’s that no one could find her. She could have a heart attack. What if she had died or gone into preterm labor? Or….”
“Alex, why don’t you look at the numbers?” Cristina said, pulling up her computer again and pulling out Jo's latest test results.
He looked over the labs and the stress test results, including the echo that played on the computer. Her heart is strong, there was no denying it.
I recommended that she be discharged as of tomorrow and Carina and I both agree. Maggie said she'll take up monthly appointments with Jo until the baby's born and after that every 6 months. She'll get an echo and a stress test and she'll send me the results, but I've also booked a plane home for tonight.”
“You're leaving now? But what if….”
“Alex, take a breath again.”
Alex growled but did as he was told. He took a deep breath, letting the tightness in his chest uncurl and subside for the moment.
“Your wife is healthy again, you don't need me to babysit her anymore. You can go home and I'm going to go home too.”
“But what if….” Alex trailed off as he felt his chest tighten. The anxiety curled inside of him like a spring on a Jack in the box, ready to burst open at any minute.
“Jo said you've been having trouble sleeping.”
“Yeah, but I just have a lot on my plate with Jo and the girls, puls Luna stopped sleeping through the night so I did too and Helena is suddenly biting at daycare so I have to pick her up early and Jo naps during the day and then is up early in the morning and late a night….”
Cristina raised an eyebrow at him, not believing his justifications. “Carina said Jo’s sleeping well and that Luna only wakes up once in the middle of the night but goes back down easy. I can’t say for the biting thing that’s your department.”
Alex laughed a little as he ran his hand over his face. “But I don't, stare up at the ceiling and worry. I'm always going to worry about my wife and our daughters, you can’t change that.”
“There's worrying about life and then there’s anxiety. Alex, I think it might be wise to make an appointment with your GP to discuss therapy and potential anti-anxiety medication.”
“I don't know if I’m there yet,” Alex said with a shake of his head.
Cristina just gave him a soft smile. “I think we might be.”
Alex looked away from her, staring at the wall as his chest tightened again. An image of Jo laying on the hospital bed, her eyes not focusing on him and telling him that she didn't feel well. Cristina put a hand on his back and rubbed up and down. That brought him back as he let out a shaky breath.
He didn't realize he was crying until the tears fell onto his lap and Cristina offered him a tissue. It was like a release of emotions that had been building up for the past month. All of that fear, and anxiety, and worry, and stress of the situation, came pouring out as he cried. Cristina just rubbed his back and offered him tissues. She didn't make fun of him, she never would and for that he was grateful.
He remembered when he first told Cristina that he loved Jo. Lying on her bed in her room staring up at the ceiling admitting his love for Jo for the first time. Back then he was scared, but it was a different kind of fear, the kind of rejection and heartbreak. If he knew then what he knew now, he would have punched Myers before he had the chance to hurt Jo. He would have loved her sooner and helped her divorce Paul before he lashed out at Andrew. He would have kissed her, loved her, and married her again in a heartbeat. Looking at their life now, he knew that it was all worth it. Even if it meant having to go through all this again. But, he was desperate to get back to the way things were before her heart failed, or at least to have a new normal again.
“I think therapy would be good,” Alex finally admitted as he wiped away the last of the tears with a nod.
“I’ll help you make an appointment with a therapist today, but first I think you should talk to Jo and make up with her,” Cristina said, giving him a little nudge and Alex agreed with another nod.
“Will you at least stay for dinner? If Jo gets discharged maybe we could have dinner at Meredith's house,” Alex asked. “I feel like we haven't really spent any time with you and Meredith, just the three of us.”
“Why don’t you both meet me in the pits after you've made up with Jo and we can drink and talk about how things have changed.”
“I've really missed you.”
“I've missed you too,” Cristina said as she pulled him in for a hug and Alex hugged her back. Neither one of them were good with physical affection but this felt warranted. “You and Mer have to come to Switzerland and bring the kids too. I'm sure they'll have a blast.”
“I don't know about that,” Alex said with a small laugh. “Meredith’s kids would probably enjoy it, but I don’t know about having two toddlers and a baby on the plane.”
“I could get you a private jet?” Cristina said with a shrug as if a private jet was a normal way to travel.
“We'll see,” Alex said with a smile.
…………………………………………………………………
Alex approached Hayes as he stood at the nurse's station on the ped’s floor going over his chart work. He had stopped by his office to come down from the high of his emotions and to pick up Jo’s mac and cheese. Hayes glanced up at him with a nod before he went back to his work. The two of them had worked together in the Peds department since the merger with Pac-North. They were co-chiefs, but neither was willing to bend to the other. They often butted heads as they had different approaches to things. However, they were starting to put aside their egos and work together as Heyes had stepped up to help him since Jo had gotten sick.
“I heard Jo escaped again,” Heyes said with a smirk.
Alex sighed as he shook his head. “Don’t even remind me and don’t help her again.”
“She's a grown woman, Karev and she’s mostly recovered,” Hayes argued back with his excuses.
“I don’t want to hear it Hayes,” Alex said, raising his voice. “It's bad enough that you go along with her and hide out in your office with her.”
“Karev,” Hayes said with a stern voice as Alex growled. “When my wife, Abigail, was in the hospital all she wanted was a bit of normalcy. So I’d take her to have lunch with me in my office like we used to do before she got sick. Jo needed the same normalcy so I had lunch with her in my office. It’s more than you do for her.”
Alex took in Hayes’s scolding with a grain of salt. Yet, when Hayes brought up Abigail, he softened. Hayes was just looking out for Jo as a friend and Alex did appreciate that. He understood what they were going through, given his experience with his own wife. He was also right, although Alex was reluctant to admit it.
“I know, and Jo must have loved that,” Alex admitted as he looked up at Hayes, the animosity gone.
“She did, but she would have preferred to have lunch with you. It’s mac and cheese day, her favorite,” Hayes gently reminded him.
“Yeah, I know that too. I got a bowl for her. I don't think Jo can’t stay in the hospital now that she doesn’t have to. But I need to take paternity leave so I can be with her. She hates being here and she hates being home alone, but if I'm home with her, I’m hoping she’ll let me take care of her. I want to take care of my wife. And I need you to take over for me and run the peds department. I know we butt heads on it, but we’ve been co-chiefs since I came back from Pac North and you’re the only one I trust with my patients, well you and Schmitt too, but don't tell him I said that.”
“Yeah, the resident doesn't need another ego boost now that he's got his confidence,” Hayes agreed with a smile. “But are you sure? Now that she's recovering more, Jo will settle down if you give her a little bit of freedom and I knew you talked about working until the delivery.”
“I’m sure, Cristina and Carina agreed that she shouldn't work. I still think she should be on light bed rest too but that’s not going to happen. If Jo has to be at home and not working then it’s only fair if I do the same,” Alex said, sure of his plan.
Hayes’ expression softened as he nodded. “You should know that I’ve already talked to some of your patients and introduced myself about taking over your service.”
“You went behind my back and stole my patients?” Alex asked, putting his hands on his hips.
“Was I wrong to do so?” Hayes asked with a raised eyebrow. “You’ve been more focused on Jo than your work and for good reason, but someone needed to step in.”
“Okay,” Alex relented, putting his hands down. “I’ll officially hand my patients over to you. I already talked to Chief Altmen and since I'm already on leave she’s agreed to start my paternity leave at the end of the day.”
“That sounds good, Karev. We can handle it here, go take care of your wife,” Hayes said with a smile patting his back in silent support.
“Thank you, Hayes,” Alex said letting out a sigh of relief as he felt the weight of the world lift off his shoulders.
It took a while to get everything organized. There was a mountain of paperwork and charts. Alex and Hayes met with all of his patients and he was able to hand them over with confidence. With everything in place for him to go on leave, Alex packed up his bag, closed his office, and took off his white coat. Then he went to his wife.

Ok I'm honestly nearing tears over what I just witnessed in this episode tonight.
I just...cannot fathom how a room of writers had this idea brought to them and they said "Oh yeah, this'll totally be alright. The fans will love it. They'll think it's sexy."
No. I felt incredibly uncomfortable. Violated even.
I just wanted to get this out there because venting on tumblr makes me feel better.
There is nothing about this that is ok. Fucking what's her name is claiming there was consent. Bullshit. Absolutely not.
Forgive my outburst. But thanks for reading.

Hold Back The River • Jackson Avery
Summary: Fighting is never the solution for a relationship and Y/N and Jackson would know so.
Word count: 1337
Tumblr media
Tried to keep you close to me
A relationship was something fun and emotional most of the times. But it isn't when you fight all the time. Or you need to fight for love. Then it's not.
The last few weeks weren't what they were two years ago. Most of the time words weren't spoken but when it did happen. It was more fighting that talking.
"How long are we going to continue acting like this?" You walked into your house, throwing your jacket on the kitchen table in front of Jackson. "Because if we are, then I'm out."
Jackson just kept going on with typing away on the laptop in front of him before you smacked the lid close, catching his attention.
"I don't know Y/N are we?" He replied when staring into your eyes that were glaring at him with tears covering them. "It's what we've been doing for three weeks."
You nodded your head when letting the tears make their entrance on your cheeks. "Then it is be better if we do it forever, i guess."
"Y/N wait- Y/N" But the only response he got was a door closing on his face and led to him leaning his head on the door in front of him.
But life got in between
"You can't just leave Seattle because of him, Y/N. You're my person." You accepted the beer bottle that Andrew handed you as he sat down next to you. "And also Levi's person."
You took a sip from your beer, releasing a sigh because of all the weight you felt on your shoulders. "You two idiots can take care of yourself, i know you can."
Andrew shrugged his shoulder to you. "And what about your job?" He questioned.
"I already have an offer in Amsterdam, I always liked the Netherlands." You said to your best friend who was listening to you. "I'll be fine."
"Amsterdam? Amst- are you crazy?" Andrew scolded when the both of you started to laugh at his words.
Tried to square not being there
"You're sure you're leaving?" Meredith spoke up as the two of you were folding up some laundry. "I don't want you to leave, no one would want you to, you can just stay here at my house?"
You pulled your lips into a sad smile while holding a shirt from Bailey in your hands. "I need to leave, I guess I'm a runner too."
"Who am I suppose to get drunk with? When you're gone?" The blonde woman sat down on a chair, peering up at you from under her eyelashes. "I'll miss you."
You placed your hand on top of her own, nodding your head. "Me too, Meredith, me too."
But think that I should have been
Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Opening your closet, you grabbed the clothes of the hangers and threw them into your suitcase while tears ran down your cheeks.
You thought that making this step was easy and a good thing for you, but it did hurt, more than you thought it would.
"So you are serious about this, huh?" Jackson said as he leaned against the doorframe, receiving a quiet 'yeah' from you. "And we can't talk about things?"
You shook your head in denial, closing your suitcase with a deep sigh and a heavy heart in your chest when you started rolling your suitcase towards the door.
"I'm sorry, okay? I really am." Jackson placed his hand on yours but you pulled away as you opened the door and walked out of the door.
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back
Opening your laptop, your fingers typed in site for a flight to Amsterdam the next week or so.
Transferring the money toward the site, a green sign showed up on your screen showing the flight was booked for next week.
You were leaving.
Once upon a different life
We rode our bikes into the sky
Standing against a silver pole on the boat, you stared at Alex and Jo as they were smiling at each other and Meredith stood in front of them.
"You're in deep thoughts?" A voice spoke up behind you as you slightly jumped in shock, noticing your boss behind you and Andrew smirking at you from the corner of your eye.
"Doctor Avery." You spoke before rolling your eyes at Andrew who was still smirking.
"After last week, you're still calling me that?" You looked back to the man in front of you, frowning at you.
"I'm a resident and I screwed you, I'm embarrassed, can we just drop it?" You rambled to the plastic surgeon before walking off to your friends.
But now we crawl against the tide
Those distant days are flashing by
Placing your bags in the bags into the trunk of the cab, you placed the money in the driver's hand before getting in and driving away. "Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, please."
Raindrops covered the window on your side while the cab drove by the hospital with speed.
"You okay, miss?" The man asked as he kept on driving and following his route but noticing the line of tears in your eyes.
"Yeah, thank you." You mumbled back to the man.
Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and see where you hide
"Deluca, where is Y/N?" Jackson leaned his arm on the desk when Andrew kept talking to Carina. "DeLuca?"
"I can't tell you because she said tha-" Carina smacked her brother on the back of his head, giving Jackson a small smile before walking away.
"She said what?" Jackson gave the Italian man a stern face, wanting to know what was going on.
"She's gone, parti, andato via." Andrew blurted, shrugging his shoulders as he started to walk away but Jackson stepped in front of him. "What?"
"Where. Is. She. Now?" Jackson insisted, forming his voice in a harder way.
"Probably in some cab or in the worst scenario she's now at the airport." The Italian resident said, leaning his back against the desk.
"Come on." Jackson pulled Andrew's arm as they both strolled over to the elevator.
Hold back the river, hold back
"Thank you, sir" you said before you went to the departure terminal to find your airline.
Fiddling into your bagage, you took a hold of y your passport, wanting to check in as soon as you could.
Lonely water, lonely water, won't you let us wander
Let us hold each other
"She still has a half hour if you want her back, start searching." Andrew snapped to the man next to him.
Letting their eyes control every single person in the crowd, the both of them started searching for you.
Until Andrew's eyes fell on a leather jacket clothed back.
Lonely water, lonely water, won't you let us wander
Let us hold each other
"I'll be right back, ma'am, one second." The female smiled before walking off. Knowing she'd be taking more than a second.
Feeling a buzzing sound in your pocket, you took a hold of your phone and noticed a selfie of you and Andrew showing up, knowing it was Andrew that was calling you.
Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back
"How about you stay here and don't leave me?"
You froze in your actions, staring in front of you, starting to shake your head in denial, not believing this was happening.
"Why- how- when did y-" your words were silenced when you saw Andrew sitting in front of you and knowing there was only one possibility for the person behind you. "Why are you here?"
"I'm preventing you from ruining my life by leaving me."

Prompt marina honeymoon trip to nyc and they cross paths with arizona who is surprised to see carina there with a wife and maya being jealous of carina with arizona and ending with sexy times for marina
It wasn't really the honeymoon Maya imagined, not really. She dreamed of going to another country, no way of contact with anyone but her wife, warm weather, beaches, historical places... But with the pandemic still going strong, all they could do was travel inside the US and since Carina had never been to New York, they decided it would be a good place for her to meet and the Italian promised her wife once it was safe, they could go anywhere in the world.
(It turned out it didn't really matter the place as long as it was with Carina)
The first day in there all they did was stay in bed and walk around Times Square at night, and the way Carina smiled at everything, amazed by crowded New York, it made Maya melt in a way she only did with the brunette.
It was on their fourth day there that it happened. They get up early so they could enjoy the city, after a few - a lot of - minutes of kissing in bed, they decide to get ready to walk around the town. They eat breakfast at the hotel, and leave hand in hand. Maya still gets chills whenever her hand touches Carina's ring, she can never hide her smile.
Even tho New York is huge and crowded, they try and find quiet places, spend time only in each other's presence, and Maya might not like this city too much but she loves everything when it's with Carina. They visit the Art Museum and the blonde couldnt care less about the paintings, because she is sure Carina's smile and Carina's interested expression is the most beautiful work of art she'll see.
And then their bubble pops. Or well, Maya's bubble pops.
"Carina Deluca oh my God."
Carina turns to the voice and Maya does the same, frowning when a blonde with blue eyes shows up smiling in front of them.
"Arizona!" Carina pulls the woman for a hug and Maya frowns even more, she has heard that name before.
"Are you okay? I heard about Andrew, I wanted to text but I know how it feels, it's not like an "I'm sorry" will fix it right?" Arizona has a sad smile on her face and Carina only nods, Andrea's death is still quite a sensitive topic. "But I am sorry really. About everything. He was a really good person."
"Yeah, yeah. He was. Thank you."
"Now why are you here? You should've told me you were in New York! And hello!" Arizona finally looks past the Italian to the blonde behind her who only waves.
"Oh well." Carina smile is back and she turns around seeking for Maya's hand, which the blonde happily takes. "This is Maya. We're having a honeymoon."
"A honeym- Oh my God really?" The older blonde said surprised, Carina nodded, a bright smile on her face. "Oh wow, I had no idea you got married, congratulations you both!"
"Thank you." They said in synchrony.
"Well you should come to NY more times, so I can show you the town, you know there's a lot more here than tourist places."
Carina laughs.
Maya smile is fake and all she wants is leave. It's not like she is jealous it's just that... she's jealous.
"I have to go now but I'm serious about you showing up." Arizona pulls Carina for another hug and it's a little too long for Maya's liking. The older blonde then proceeds to shake hands with Maya, a smile on her face.
"You know, you have a type." Maya comments after Arizona is gone.
"What?"
"Blue eyed blondes. Hopefully you like me better than her." Maya says, supposedly as a joke but deep down she does hope Carina likes her more. It's her insecurity, always getting to her.
Carina laughs.
"Oh bambina don't be jealous of her, who did I marry?"
"Could've been her if she didn't have a child and a insistent ex."
"Hey." Carina pulls Maya to a more private area of the Museum and caresses her face with both of her hands. "I wouldn't have married anyone else bella. I love only you." The italian hers closer, slowly letting her lips glue to Maya's; waiting for the blonde to be the one to take control and when she does, a little too aggressively, Carina smiles, pulling the smaller body even closer, hands travelling to Maya's ass. When it gets a tad too heated, the Italian stops.
"We're in public. I'll show you how much I like you better later."
And so she does.
Hours later, when they finally arrive at the hotel after a tiring day, Carina kisses Maya fervently and rapidly, she lets her hands wonder her wife's body as if it's the first time she explores it - because it always feels like it is. Maya moans and groans and breathes heavily into her ear and it's exhilarating and delightful. She also bites and sucks Carina's neck and the Italian finds it funny how the blonde tries to contain her noises - and fails miserably. She lets Maya hold onto her body while the blonde cums into her fingers, still pressed to the hotel door.
"Is this enough convincing?" Carina asks, the blonde still with her face hidden into brunette hair, recovering.
"I think I might need more."
Carina laughs but complies, and that night they don't sleep much.

ok so @mayabishopapologist got me thinking abt their soccer au and
maya, who was the coach’s-kid striker all thru her childhood club years and then into college
we’re talking entire days spent taking shots in front of the goal, hours forced to listen to her dad draw out plays on his whiteboard, hundreds of laps around the field so she can play whole games with no subs
her dad did make her play everywhere though - if they were down a key player, she filled in. she came early to warm up the keeper and stayed after until the overhead lights clicked on and the crickets came out
her senior year of college, an opponent’s bad slide tackle took out her ankle in her championship game. she lied about the injury, took the penalty anyway, and made the deciding shot of the match
after a few years off to recover, she got drafted into the nwsl. ppl who watched her college career were surprised - she joined the reign as a keeper, not a forward
interviews asked pruitt herrera, the head coach, about it. speculated it might be because of her ankle. did he anticipate any re-injury risk if any dives go wrong?
“our team has a tight dynamic. i think the keeper position is where bishop can do the most good for us. no, no further questions.”
andy was a forward on the reign with some legendary corner kicks. there was a bond there, even if maya didn’t talk much about her side of it—both dedicated, competitive, type-a coach’s daughters, trying to prove something every time they laced up their cleats
her other close friend on the team was vic, the fearless young rookie defender who was already becoming a fan-favorite. vic had a killer work ethic and an incredible clearance rate, but what really cinched her as central to the team was her energy; her smile lit up the whole field. she reminded andy and maya (and everyone else, really) that soccer was supposed to be fun
after a few years of playing together, the three of them got drafted to the uswnt
“good,” said andy, tipsy on her fourth celebration drink, “it couldn’t have been just one of us. it had to be us. guys, it had to be all of us.”
if they won the world cup that year? and came in 2nd four years after that? well, that was just the universe’s way of proving andy herrera right
the reign season after their second cup, though, pruitt got diagnosed with terminal cancer. he stepped down as head coach, and robert sullivan stepped up
“someone’s got eyes for the new coach,” vic teased
“do not,” andy snapped
sullivan wanted to move maya back out of the goalie box. maya determinedly tried not to process any of her feelings about that
she was out one night, cajoled by vic into gussying up for one of the celeb parties she never really liked, when she sat down next a woman at the bar
“you look very familar,” the woman said. accent. italian, probably; maya played for a uk team a couple times in her off-seasons, and she made a few trips
maya blinked. “yeah?” she leaned in, looked closer and—wait a second. this woman was the one who looked familiar
“yeah,” the woman said, smiling as the recognition cemented itself. “you’re the portiera from the women’s soccer team my brother likes”
maya grinned, taking a sip of her drink. “guilty. and you’re an...actress?”
“almost. model.” she held out a hand. “carina deluca”
a model? yeah. yeah, ok. maya totally, completely believed her

Soooooo, What now?
*Major Spoilers Ahead* (kinda)
Read the interview with Krista, the other day and she hinted that the Grey's season finale was supposed to end with a major character death in an explosion at the Pack North Hospital, I've been mulling over it anxiously for the last 2 weeks or so (even though she also said they would have to change everything up) however I decided to type my brain's over dramatic and obsessive thoughts over who I think the likely candidate leaving was.
She said there'd be clues in the Station 19 episodes on who the victim was supposed to be. I've been collecting theories on who I think it would have been.
____________________________________________
Meredith Grey (Very unlikely, impossible even)
So far I've taken out of course Meredith Grey, can't have Grey's Anatomy with out Grey.
____________________________________________
Miranda Bailey (Very unlikely)
Next is Bailey, her and Ben are still the biggest tie between Station 19 and Grey's for now, plus the spoiler pictures seemed to hint at her being fine and I don't think they'll be getting rid of anymore OGs unless the Actor or Actress choses to go.
____________________________________________
Levi Schmitt (Very Unlikely)
If we're going on spoiler pictures, then Levi should also be safe.
____________________________________________
Jo Wilson (Unlikely)
Unless the Actress wants out I don't see her being the person, she's climbing up to slowly but surely to a new story arc, she hasn't even chosen a last name. Plus there's no reason for her to be at Pac North either.
____________________________________________
Owen Hunt (Not likely but still a small chance)
I don't think they're gonna take Owen out right now either because, he literally just got two kids although who knows? Idk he just doesn't seem like a likely candidate.
____________________________________________
Amelia and Link (Very unlikely)
Amelia and Link have to be out too because they just got their baby, plus taking any of them away from the other would practically be suicide for the show, at this point.
____________________________________________
Richard (Unlikely)
Richard seems safe as well he should still be recovering from his hip, he shouldn't be able to move around so well as yet. The same OG statement I made on Bailey applies to him.
____________________________________________
Teddy Altman (Unlikely)
Teddy I'm not convinced isn't her, but the fact that, she has no connection to Pac Pac North, besides Owen, made me a little sceptical there is no reason she should be there.
____________________________________________
Maggie Pierce (Unlikely but still a small chance)
Maggie..... I'm actually not sure, I suppose it could be her maybe she went to fill out some of the lawsuit, forms at Pac North when it got blown up. (it is where she did the surgery.) But that's an extremely crazy idea and other than that she would have no reason to be at Pac North.
____________________________________________
Tom (Likely)
Tom is another candidate, he runs all of Catherine's hospitals so it's not far fetched that he would go to make sure its running smoothly, plus it conveniently gives the writers a chance to finish off the whole Teddy/Owen/Koracick triangle, BUT it really is an unlikely scenario that its him.
____________________________________________
Deluca (Not Likely, but still Likely)
It could be Deluca the spoilers also said they were going to revisit the trafficking story like, maybe the girl asks for his help and because of the way it was at Grey Sloan the last time he takes her to Pac North instead and in order to hide their operation the traffickers blow up the hospital to silence them. This is another one of those convenient plot lines that would help end a love triangle, however Krista did say she was having a hard time deciding who Meredith would end up with so this scenario is a toss up.
____________________________________________
Jackson Avery (Very Likely)
Jackson in my opinion has the highest possibility, he's on Station 19 as well and the next episode has him, Ben ,and Emmet at gun point which could be the set up for them to end up at the explosion site. He's had little to no plots recently and seeing that Harriet has magically ceased to exist it gives him the easiest exit plot. That leads into the convenience of Catherine being devastated and since him and Richard were close it could reunite Richard and Catherine .
____________________________________________
Carina Deluca (Unlikely)
Carina doesn't have a reason to be at Pac North, she's been on Station 19 more than has on Grey's so she's not really a major Grey's Character. Plus her and Maya just started a relationship and I'm sniffing a conflict with them coming so its tok soon for them to get rid of her.
____________________________________________
I wouldn't necessarily call Catherine a major character plus Debbie Allen is pretty involved in the show's production so I doubt they're going to kill her off.
Same goes to the rest of the interns except Levi, they aren't really major characters same for Nico, at least I hope he's not the one to go I'm still waiting for him and Levi to make up.

This might be ignored, its a long read, but if you want to have your forces restored on feminism my dead feminists i really wanted to share something that is making me tear up every 5 seconds.
As some of you might now, in my country (Brasil) we currently have a situation where our "president" is a misogynist (said he had a bunch of boys, they he went weak and have a daughter that's a "small" example for yall), homophobic ( said he would beat the gay out of his son if he ever "got it"), racist ( talking about killing native Indians and saying slaverism was a choice yadayada) anyways, just a piece of crap, we call him Bozo, like the clown. Well ever since his election we have been feeling so down (I'm sure my American friends can share the feeling). We are the country that kills more transexual people on the world. And it's not even illegal here, that would put into perspective. So, all this are real, serious problems, but bear with me as I get I little... naive maybe?. Well we had 20 seasons of BigBrother over here (Or BBB, Adding the Brasil at the end) and the show is on "the liberals tv channel, all the conservatives try to boycott it yadda yadda ") . But this season is just a gem. I feel like a revolution is happening and (I'm crying rn) I can't even put into words. Its gonna sound ridiculous, but you have to understand that 1) TV is a huge part of our culture, and is 100% connected with politics for us. 2)This show has been silencing woman, making men do anything they want without consequences and put woman as simple objects for their enjoyment. And somehow every year we wouldcomplain about how that was the reflection of our country. Something like this year edition NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.
Our LGBT movies, Theather and books are being censoreds right now. Our country is on the verge of becoming a conservative doom.
The secretary of health system said :abstinence of sex is the best way to avoid DSTs and pregnancies. THATS HOW DEEP IN SHIT WE ARE. And we feel voiceless. Is like they are the majority you know?
Is like, you know when Katniss made every distric rebel by leading an example on the hunger games? Is THAT KIND OF SHIT. So, firsts things first:
I will introduce you the leaders of our current feminist movement
First, Thelma, she is not just ya regular powerful black queen. She is a doctor, with a bunch of degrees on stuff I can't even pronounce, she is specialized on anesthesia and she is a resident like those bad ass ones in grey's anatomy. She she is A BOSS. She is strong, and even though she is not 100% familiar with the feminism in "theory" she lives it in practice with out even knowing it ( now she knows, cause the other two are teaching her!) I want to make clear that on this reality show, the majority of the public has always been racist, and black people normally are eliminated first, yes it sucks and is one of the reasons I stopped watching a long time ago, as most of us millenials, but thank God we came back. She isn't going ANYWHERE CUZ WE ARE NOT LETTING THAT HAPPEN.
The second one is Marcela, every since the first we saw her she said loud and clear:I AM A FEMINIST, she is also a Doctor. She calls her self doctor unicorn, she is an OB/GYN and choose her career because she wanted to fully support her transexual brother /yess/, she is also expert on female sexuality and give classes about it, think Carina Deluca. She also takes care of sexual abuse victims. Oh yeah, she is bisexual as well. And everyone is shipping her with the next one btw.
Now our last warrior: Gizelly, She is a Lawyer, and she advocates for woman, she has suffered all the types of abuse from her ex husband and after all the trauma, she decided no one would do that to her again. Feminist, we call her the hurricane, she just shoots fire and defends any woman that is being belittled.
Tumblr media
What happened was, some guys decided they would "seduce"any woman who was in a relationship outside the reality show, so they would look bad, and be eliminated easily. Wellx those 3 heard that, and they just couldn't get quiet. They went and tell all the girls about it. Some of them didn't believe them, the guys said they were CRAZY, and were LYING (what a shock)
The confrontation scene:
Tumblr media
So one of them said: If I am lying, I will be eliminated this round. If I'm back, then you are the lier. So, regular reality show stuff right?
Here are some things you should know: Marcela, the leader ( as she was the one with the initiatives) was anonymous when she first got on the show, and 13 days later, she had 2 MILLION FOLLOWERS. Every feminist, every LGBT+ and ally on this country just woke up ya know?. We were all mad as hell that they were being treated as liars, but, and that's a HUGE but, the guy mentioned earlier was against one that was even worse. He was touching inappropriately the girls while they were completely DRUNK at the parties ( they wouldn't remember later), he was the one who actually made said plan mentioned before, but they didn't knew at the house because he was a completely different person when he was alone with the guys. A complete scumbag, he mocked and made fun of every woman on the house because of their looks etc. Sooo, all those millions of feminists watching were like : "do we take the biggest jerk and make the girls think we think they are lying or ?" Well, we decided to take the bigger toxic monster first, and left the other one for the next. But we had a special card. Every year, after the show starts, they put a glass house in the middle of a mall, with 4 candidates inside, we vote for 2 of them to be on the actual show yada yada. What happened was:people started showing off by the mall, with posters, begging for whomever got in the house to :"PLEASE TELL THE GIRLS EVERYONE BELIEVE THEM. THAT THEY ARE NOT LYING. THAT THEY HAVE MILLIONS OF SUPPORTERS. THAT HE ONLY CAME BACK BECAUSE THE OTHER WAS WORSE ETC"
So, last night was elimination day, the worst one got out with 80% elimination A victory for us (there were 4 people on this run, and one of them is a Black guy, fat, older than everyone else, and by history, he would obviously be the first eliminated but he was the one with LESS VOTES. AGAIN THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED IN OUR COUNTRY SPECIALLY SINC THE FOURTH PERSON COMPETING IS A CARISMATIC YOUNG KOREAN MAGICIAN YOUTUBER WITH A NETWORTH OF MILLIONS, BUT THE BLACK GUY WAS LESS VOTED THAN HIM, GUYS I CAN'T STOP WRITING IN CAPS.The second worst one tho, comeback celebrating, saying he knew he was right. Singing victory. The girls were crashed. No one understood and they all started crying and talking about how it was a reflection of our country, but that they wouldn't change their ideals etc. (Again, they didn't knew everything trash bag number one did, cuz he did it in secret so they thought it was an answer)... well, 2am, the couple from the glass house got in. And they told them. They said everything. How the public loves them, and the why the other one got out first, and how we knew they were saying the truth. This part is just a sweet ending for y'all. They then proceeded to get all the woman in one bedroom and talked and talked, they even explained to the ones who had some deep patriarchal mindset and were believing the boys up until that point, they had conversations about feminism, about not accepting to be treated that way, they cried, they were so relieved, it's silly because is a reality show, but last night everyone felt like we were supported. Like, people got our backs! People agree that we wont take that bullshit anymore. In other editions those guys would be the handsome guys that all the girls would die to be with, you know? But know they are the villains. It happened. The girls are not the crazy ones. They are not the powerless wones. They were the STRONG ONES forming OPINIONS, moving the big pieces on the board.
I can't even talk about how this will impact on many young girls, especially with all those girls having such strong stories you know? Today is a reality show but whatch us on the booting vote! Watch us at the March's. Just watch us. I'm telling y'all. Brasil is gonna turn this shit upside down.
Anyways here is a little clip of when our guardian Angel Dan, told the girls that they should trust Marcela's word
The relief the felt, we all felt. Having your word taken seriously after being called crazy and lier...
( even the production of the show tryied to deny the guys plan was real before the videos started pouring up, and they had to take back after saying on national television that Marcela was lying. Because that was the standard)
