Why do you think there’s a pattern of Theseus being abusive/overly aggressive in Fantastic Beasts fanfic? It’s been driving me up the wall trying to find Newt and Theseus fanfic that doesn’t make them OOC especially Theseus, and idk, in the context of Newt being Autistic I find it disturbing. Like sure, Theseus is hot-headed and loses his temper, he doesn’t always understand Newt, but those traits seem overtly exaggerated in a lot of fandom content.

Obsessed with this ask. I have been thinking about it all day, and am just now getting to write it up! Thinking about it in the background of my statistics class almost singularly got me through its sensory and anxiety hell. /sweat-laugh emoji/ So thank you!

Please remember, all of this is based on my own perspectives, knowledge, and headcanons, as well as canon clues. Nothing here is definitive and is open for respectful conversation! (Not directed specifically at you, salamander, just since this is a public blog I like to cover my bases. ^_^)

Buckle up: major autistic info dump incoming

Alright, so, my initial thoughts are that...

Obviously, there was a decent chunk of Newt fic written between 2016 and 2018 before CoG came out, that first film where we really got to see Theseus as a character, for who he really is (especially since they cut that letter from him to Newt at beginning of FBWTFT, that starts with "little brother," which is just pretty endearing). IMHO, this two-year gap means people had a wide open playing field to build the character themselves. Here's a few thoughts on that:

The framework for the entire Wizarding World, narratively, is the Harry Potter series. Boy wizard, shunned by family, isolated from socialization -- Outcasts have always been the backbone of She-who-must-not-be-named's stories. It's compelling. We love it, we lap it up. With only one FB film out before 2018 and Newt being such a unique protagonist, I think it's likely people fell back on the more typical Harry-Dudley trope to create a compelling backstory for Newt, using that tried-and-true fantasy Cinderella-type trope.

Second, from what I can tell, there was a lot less serious consideration of Newt actually being autistic in the early years of the fandom. (I only "joined" relatively recently myself, despite going to the first 2 movies on opening day, but I'm nothing if not fastidious in consuming every scrap of historical content when I develop a new interest, lol.) I've read pages of threads and plenty of "think pieces" attributing Newt's behavior to trauma-related social anxiety and/or his profession as a magizoologist. I absolutely buy the latter (adjusting body language for one's profession), but not entirely the former. (Personally, Newt doesn't strike me as an inherently anxious person--he strikes me as an inherently autistic one who also sometimes experiences anxiety. Discomfort and anxiety aren't the same thing, but people often conflate them, imho.) Anyway, THAT BEING SAID, I've noticed in quite a few fics that people write Theseus as being part of that implied social trauma, via sibling bullying that rises beyond typical sibling harassment. People perhaps tried to explain Newt's behavior by making him, at the very least, overshadowed by Theseus (and ashamed of it) or, at the very worst, abused and/or neglected by his family.

Also, quite simply: people process their own family trauma via fic. I think it's highly likely Theseus just served a sibling or parental role for some people in stories. (The abundance of abusive!Thranduil fic in the LotR fandom in the early 00s is another example of this.) Nothing wrong with using fic to process feelings and life experiences (god knows I do, it's horrifically obvious and always has been lmao), but this bulletpoint is still one explanation for the pre-CoG "Theseus being a dick in fic" phenomenon.

Plus, fanfic doesn't occur in a vacuum. Even when new canon info comes out, existing fic and whatever the going/contemporary fanon is often impact how new writers write their characters, even post-CoG. (And how those characterizations are received by the larger fandom--that reception may subsequently impact how writers maintain or change their characters in the future, imho.)

As for the current reasons Theseus is often OOC in post-CoG fic...

Well, I have my theories, but I am also not entirely sure. However, I feel pretty confident it has to do, primarily, with points 1 and 4.

Leta Lestrange and the Scamander Brothers - Honestly, I think people likely are pretty offended on Newt's behalf for the Leta/Theseus marriage. In mainstream media, we're kind of trained to think that dating your friend's ex is ultimate betrayal--it's difficult for people to imagine a world in which a person who marries their brother's ex is a good person. (...I was once in a friend group where we had all dated the same girl at some point, but we were all either ridiculously honest or autistic so we just--wait for it--talked about it and moved on.) That being said, I never read Leta & Newt as overtly romantic (then again, I also didn't know Bunty liked Newt until the 4th time I watched CoG), so I don't entirely get this one to the degree that I think some people viscerally feel this. But I expect some people see that and assume it says something much larger about Theseus' character than it does. (I do think it says a lot about Theseus that he loves Leta, but I don't think it says the same things about him that some other people do -- I think it speaks more to his similarities to Newt [compassion and positive outlook] than it does to stealing Newt's Hogwarts sweetheart. But I digress.)

Something Did Happen at Some Point - Now, there is undeniably a distance between the brothers that we, as viewers, don't necessarily know the origin of. (So I think I may have mentioned in my letters that [my brother & I] have quite a complicated relationship. // Does he want to kill you? // Frequently.) Have they always been like that? Is it new? Is it because of the age difference? Because they have different personalities? (Though I will argue until I'm blue in the face that they're actually extraordinarily similar people, at their cores.) Is it because Newt got expelled, or because Theseus scooped up Leta, or because Theseus expresses emotion through touch & Newt jerks away from touch he doesn't initiate himself, or because because because because because? I don't know. But there is something there and, based on the "complicated relationship" comment, it sounds like it is something that likely developed over time. So imho - I think some people see that and just lean in way too hard. Like, pedal to the medal, 0 to 60 too hard.

Theseus is Snarky to Newt on Multiple Occasions - Mostly based around how Newt directs his life, carries himself, etc etc. For example, it would be easy to take that whole scene before and after Newt's travel hearing in CoG and assume Theseus is an overprotective, condescending, and ableist prick. But if we look below the surface (and the stage directions in the screenplay help, too. When he says "maybe a little less... / like me. / well, it can't hurt" the instructions say 'not without fondness', or something like that), it's pretty glaringly obvious he doesn't mean to be that way. Even condescending behaviors usually have causal correlates, even if we can't see them on the surface. (Believe me -- and this is something we both touched on in DMs, salamander, I'm just repeating for the sake of the ask -- well-meaning pep talks and encouragement can still drip with condescension when loved ones think you need guidance because they "love you and know better " and you're just too autistic or too idealistic or too naive or whatever.) Ultimately, whether due to a failure to approach these snarky exchanges with grace and nuance, or because it can make a good fic to put brothers at odds, IDK -- but I expect this particular point plays into some people's decisions to interpret Theseus in a way I view as OOC.

Ease of Narrative ~ Nuance is hard - I mean, this one explains itself. Writing characters in a nuanced manner that allows digging into the messy horrible confusion of relationships--embedded as they are within families and societies and personal & general history--is not easy. It takes not only patience and significant effort as a writer, but it also takes a degree of self-awareness and maturity that we all reach at different points. I'm not there yet myself (there's no real arrival -- life's not a perfect graph), but still: My fic writing is very different now at 32 (with 14 years of 'adulthood' and 12 years of therapy under my belt) than it was when I was writing about adults when I was 15. (And, yes, I still have my first posted HP fic up on MuggleNet and FFnet, so you don't just have to take my word for it lmao.) To be very clear, this isn't me being ageist or whatever: I'm just saying that I often get the sense while reading fic where Theseus is reallllly overly aggressive that the writer is sometimes either very new to creative writing (and good for them! we love new writers! keep writing, lovelies!), or else quite young, and thus still acquiring life experience that is going to improve their work as they age, every single day.**

Sibling Experience - Not having personal or narrative experience with an age gap like Newt and Theseus have. I'm an older sibling by 7.5 years, which is close to Theseus & Newt's age difference. I basically half-raised my younger brother, so I have a real soft spot for that kind of sibling relationship, which comes across in most of my fics (LotR & FB). It's hard to imagine the sort of borderline sibling-parental love, responsibility, and anxiety that can permeate those kind of relationships if you haven't experienced or seen it represented in media yourself. This is just a theory, of course---I have no actual data on this being actually related to his OOCness.

What else? What do you or others think?

Final very random thought

I also think a lot of people forget that autism runs in families. So yes, Theseus doesn't always "get" Newt (god, no, lol) and he doesn't have guidance on what to do when he doesn't, but it is highly unlikely he hasn't seen behavior similar to Newt's before, whether in a parent or cousins, an aunt/uncle or something else. People *also* tend to forget, IMHO, that subclinical traits are often present in direct family members of an autistic person--Theseus' rigid thinking, for example, isn't necessarily "autistic", but he may get Newt better than people think for certain reasons we never have an opportunity to see in the script. (Not that the movies are paying *that* much attention to the actual research or autism presentations lmao, but I'm just saying it is a possibility). Being able to relate to a smaller version of someone's struggles can simultaneously make one both a better support and a worse one in a lot of ways. (And certain autistic traits can even rub up against each other poorly in different people--I have a few acquaintances that rub me the wrong way because our "symptoms" manifest in very different ways and their natural behavior triggers some of my own sensory issues or overdeveloped sense of justice or whatever. Conversely, my ADHD tendency to be 20 minutes late to every hang gives one of my autistic friends a panic attack every time -- I feel terrible, but all we can both do is try to adjust the behavior around our symptoms. And sometimes the same traits--firmly held beliefs, for example--bump into each other explosively, which I have experienced in fandom myself: two autistic people w diametrically opposing views interacting, but because we process information in similar ways even with very different perspectives, no progress can be made before someone shuts down.) BUT I BRING THIS UP BECAUSE, I do think it's possible to headcanon that some of Newt and Theseus' conflict (which does exist) could even be rooted in differing forms of neurodivergence or presentation of subclinical symptoms.

The world is a big place and there's so many possibilities. These are just some of my thoughts on why Theseus is often portrayed in a way I find to be OOC!

That’s how being eleven years old is.

staring at Yuletide like, it was cool the one time I did it, but I have enough other things, writing and otherwise, lined up for the past two months that I'm not sure I can commit, and also there's almost nothing I want myself and I was reminded Yuletide existed by a discussion thread of people having big feelings about promptless requests

(the two things I could even think of were a fic for Cinderella Phenomenon that I used to daydream about and still mostly want to write myself, and variations on a Crimson Peak 'everyone lives' AU threesome that, looking at the AO3 tag for the first time ever, appears I may already be able to find in the wild. I could possibly squeeze in a third for Wheel of the Infinite, but the only character I actually want fic for isn't listed in the character drop-down and it feels like that would be rude)

Rather than ‘transformative’ I often feel that there should be a shorthand term for fandom/fic writers who attempt to reassert traditional, racist/heteronormative patriarchal social orders into properties that even marginally dare to push against them,

The term you want already exists, though it may not have occurred to you in this context.

Bourgeois.

This adjective describes actions or aesthetic choices which support middle-class and conventional values. I will further narrow it in this instance to white middle-class conventional values of the United States, as those are the ones that I know best.

First caveat: of course, this doesn't apply to all fanfiction, even to all fanfiction within a given fandom or even a given ship. But the bourgeois strain of writing definitely exists within the phenomenon. Second caveat: I am not a radical progressive by any measure. There are certainly some conventional values of the white middle-class that I appreciate and embrace. However, that doesn't prevent me from identifying trends in group behavior. If it looks like a duck, and it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

I will now illustrate what I mean by this with examples from my primary fandom, Teen Wolf, but what I found is that this can easily be applied to many other fandoms, to greater or lesser extents: the Star Wars fandom, the MCU fandom, the Lord of the Rings fandom (!), and so on. The bourgeois need to support aristocratic, privileged, white males as cultural objects and status leaders pervades all of these fandoms; there's a reason Kylo Ren, a genocidal space fascist, received such manic devotion.

What I find extraordinarily interesting is how often elements of transgressive or counter-cultural behavior is introduced to conceal the bourgeois impulse from the audience, or sometimes even from the authors themselves. In the case of my fandom, there is an emphasis on the inhumanity of the characters as werewolves, or a defense of a serial killer, or the reconstruction of the primary romantic relationship as gay (often ignoring canon gay relationships), but this transgressive element never actually threatens the conventional social structure. On to the examples.

Peter Hale's vengeance is recontextualized as justice. The triggering event in canon is the Hale Fire, which is presented as a disruption of the social order, as it should be. And yet, canon's insistence that Peter's resulting murder spree is both self-serving and absolutely destructive vanishes from fanfiction, because it doesn't reinforce the bourgeois idea that the tragedy must be corrected to the satisfaction of white men because of the Hale's privileged status. Peter's actions are vindicated through claims of mental incapacity (which canon rejected), through the conjuration of non-existent social roles (the mythical Left Hand), or through uncritical sympathy (fanon Stiles claiming that he'd do the same thing). You don't see this impulse in fanfiction extended to Noshiko Yukimura's actions at Oak Creek or Tamora Monroe's crusade against the supernatural, because they don't have the same social status.

Ste rek (and Ste ter) is written as heterosexual romance in gay drag. While presented as something radical, the actual details of these relationships are astoundingly conventional. Why, as it often seems, is it required that Derek and/or Peter be alphas? There's no romantic or emotional reason; the impulse is purely about social status, like the heroines of fairy tales discovering that their handsome rescuer is actually a prince. Or how the canonically brave, impulsive, and audacious Stiles is written as a neglected, wilting dormouse, waiting for his (her) true love to rescue him (her) from her oblivious, selfish friends and family. The fact that it's between two men doesn't make it any less a PG-rated rehashed variation on Cinderella.

Scott McCall's role as heroic protagonist MUST be delegitimized. That canon chose a working-class Latino as it's primary focus over wealthy white men is, for many in the fandom, the production's original sin. As a consequence, his role must be rendered invalid. His struggles with school work are presented, contrary to canon, as a result of stupidity or simply being a bad student. His morals are presented as foolishness, tyranny, or the manipulations of a sinister black man. His romances are presented as either vapid infatuation or a dangerous sexual obsession. Above all, he is presented again and again as uncultivated, immature and driven by appetite.

Ever notice how often Scott appears in these fanfictions as a gluttonous eater? How he is portrayed as someone who doesn't know how to cook or clean or take care of himself? How his musical tastes run to the most banal of banal pop? How he's characterized as stubborn or incurious about lycanthropy? Of course, it's all designed to make him unworthy of his position as lead protagonist by positioning him as inferior to the white intellectual middle class, but what strikes me as funny is how much it resembles the critiques of the anarchist labor movements of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century, which portrayed labor agitators as an uneducated, unenlightened foreign mob threatening the prosperity of hard-working people.

These are just three examples. I could go on for like, an hour. And then I could select another fandom and give you examples of the same type of behavior, the same laborious defense of white middle-class patriarchal values hidden behind a very carefully constructed transgressive act, one that somehow never seems to disrupt the society in which they live.

Yeah, bourgeois pretty much covers it.

My writing consists of drabbles, hcs, but I don’t usually write full blown fics. Series w a ton of drabbles? Sure.

I will NOT write anything explicitly nsfw. Suggestive asks are a grey area

I will not write incest (PLANTCEST IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ON THIS PAGE. IF YOU SUPPORT KV, LEAVE. As someone who has a twin brother that shit thoroughly disgusts me).

I will not write blatantly toxic behaviors (hardcore abuse is triggering to me and many viewers, do not request it).

I don’t do RPF, I respect real people

Basically anything that could be tagged “Dead Dove: Do not eat”

It can be difficult to get to each ask, so to be able to answer any ideas you may send this is how you can help me! :)

I haven’t really established a word limit, and I love seeing people ramble- but for now, keep it to 1k at most.

Replaying Cinderella Phenomenon and like... I know she's a bitch at the beginning, but is there no understanding that she was genuinely emotionally abused as a child by her mother? Genuinely, all of her dreams are her being abused and formed by her mother into what she ended up becoming.

My #1 post of 2022

With the rumors about Fanfiction.net potentially being abandoned, I decided to start grabbing fanfiction from the Thunderbirds fandom, which has 5.7k fanfics. I don't think I can save it all by myself, unfortunately.

This is a google spreadsheet I started, with very basic information on what I've grabbed and turned into PDFs. I've been doing the Print -> Save to PDF method.

If anyone decides to help, make a comment with the name of the fic, the author, the fanfic id number (can be pulled from the URL or the final detail listed after publish date), # of chapters, what format it's saved to and how you would want to be credited and I'll add to the sheet as I can.

A Review of Fritz’s route (after adapting it into a different world)

This is going to be a long, mainly negative rant about Fritz and his route and how my thoughts and feelings went into adapting his route into The Cursed Prince, my Pokemon Special and Cinderella Phenomenon crossover. You can read the fan fic series here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2424433

When I first played the game, I was really interested in Fritz. He has such a strong first impression, with being pretty much the only character who’s actually nice and Lucette likes (sorta). When I learned his dad was the one who attempted to or actually instigated the coup, I was more interested in his backstory and more of his dad’s motives in his route.

Unfortunately, my expectations were massively disappointed, so much that I actually don’t really like him. In hindsight, it made sense, as the devs themselves said that it was a product of creative conflicts with a previous writer and they tried their best to work with what they have. But I didn’t know this at the time, and I was just very disappointed. The most of the backstory we got for Alcaster was in Karma’s route. Fritz’s route was basically just Varg route and a shitshow happening, and I don’t like Varg, I want to learn more about Fritz. Replaying it once soured my opinion of it further and was a big reason why I wanted to write The Cursed Prince: so I could rewrite Fritz’s route. So the route was very highly anticipated for me, so much I worried about the quality of Moon’s (Rumpel counterpart) because she was so close to Emma’s story and yet so far.

But replaying it again and rewatching it made me appreciate the plot of Fritz’s route, however, I wasn’t satisfied with the split between Varg’s and Fritz’s screentime and the romance was nonexistent. Fritz was also super bland compared to Varg because of his absolute refusal to talk about himself and I still don’t like Varg. Varg and Fritz were also too different for me to see the two as the same person, despite their physical similarities. Even though Fritz’s family and home life was clearly very shitty, it doesn’t really make much sense why he has this dark side that could manifest as a whole evil alter ego, which falls on his refusal to talk about himself and Varg just being a smarmy vague asshole. It took the fandisk to explain it, and even then, it really doesn’t fit with how Varg is presented. I have to give props to the writers for wanting to be ambitious with Fritz’s route but...it just fell flat, especially with Fritz’s lack of screentime in prior routes.

So Velvet Cloaked-Wolf ended up taking the plot, but addresses my issues with Fritz/Varg and the relationship. While Emma definitely doesn’t answer all the questions surrounding her or address all of her issues, she’s obviously from unideal circumstances (even though not everyone’s circumstances are obvious about how so unideal they are that they are suffering from some sort of mental disorder), she still talks about her life, treats X somewhat like an equal friend (not reciprocated though), has more screentime in Tempest’s Mermaid, side-stories, and her own story, and Ylfa’s characterized as having Emma’s traits but unrestrained and doing more evil things. That also makes her a ruthless bitch who is more entertaining to write than Varg, who is this smarmy bad guy that is kinda not interesting as a villain because he doesn’t do many bad things outside of his route. Besides chasing after the royal siblings, the forced kiss, and blowing up the tavern, it’s not anything overly dickish like Ylfa’s actions.

Further adding to my dislike of Fritz is how he is a nice guy whose life is completely and utterly shit. He does not have many personal victories against the cruel hand of fate. Sure he rescued the royal siblings and broke his curse on Karma’s route, but he gets caught and killed by his own dad in the end, so it was sorta moot for the first one and definitely moot for the second one. Fritz doesn’t even get to break his curse in his own route, Varg erases himself, though I guess resisting against the evil queen counts as a victory? Not a very satisfying one, because the opposite scenario that is the bad ending was just him being simply too weak to endure it and it’s pretty hard to explain why that is so when you make the wrong choices that don’t involve him. Even if one takes the interpretation that this happened because Lucette didn’t make the choices that bonded with Fritz well enough, which was how Rod’s, Karma’s, and Rumpel’s bad endings happened, it doesn’t feel as natural since Fritz wasn’t even there for most of the route. The only victory Fritz gets in that route is to be with Lucette (but that leaves a bad taste in my mouth since he dies in Rod’s route because he doesn’t get to see her). The only other (kinda) lasting personal victory he has is in Waltz’s route, but the bad ending exists.

He has more victories in Evermore (which is ambiguously canon as a fandisk), but that’s still only on three routes where he’s still alive and himself. And it would sting a lot for routes where he’s not with Lucette’s since he has a crush on her and would have his feelings hurt, and he’s demoted from being Lucette’s bodyguard because your father staging a coup against the royal family makes you very suspicious. Not only that, he’s dead on Rod’s route while his bastard of a father is still alive, which is both stupid and infuriating on so many levels because he doesn’t even do anything much there, while his death was more logical in Karma’s route as he was the reason why the Marchen was able to save the king and queen in time. Fritz is just <i>too</i> tragic, and that makes him less likable because there seems to be no point rooting for him if he’s going to get fucked over in the end.

Don’t get me wrong, I know Emma has a lot of shitty luck as well, more so than Fritz when it comes to a semblance of a stable childhood, and made some bad, fatal decisions as well. But she isn’t completely lacking agency as Fritz does and she is smart, but also mentally unstable and has not been in the wider part of society for most of her life. Her fates in Korrina’s good ending and her own bad ending are by her own hand, quite literally in the bad ending, though said mental instability was a result of things outside of her control. She also has two more victories than Fritz does, and the victory of surviving her curse is emphasized more. The first one is Shauna’s route by thwarting Silver’s plans, surviving her curse, and running away to live a life she wants in both endings (but at the expense of abandoning her own responsibilities and hurting people around her), and in Shauna’s good ending, indirectly saving a good friend and hooking her up with her crush. The second one is kinda Korrina’s bad ending by killing Black and ending the coup, but she’s too broken at that point to care, so it may not count. And while she does want to marry X, she doesn’t care about a marriage with him enough to be too torn up playing matchmaker and is quite content with her own status. Basically: Emma has a wayyyyy shittier hand in life than Fritz, but she comes out on top more than he does because she’s less moral and more selfish than he is. However, she only achieves her own true happy ending because of her faith in X, like Fritz does with Lucette.
