Care
"Steven?" Connie called as she looked at Steven, lying in their bed, pale face, dried and cracked-lipped. A look of dazed fatigue on his feverish red-cheeked face."Bisky? You ok?" The researcher asked, putting her coat on the hanger before walking up to him.
"Uhh?" Steven groaned, "I think I got something from my trip." He mumbled.
"That's a given," Connie stated, walking over to him and checking his head. "You're burning up." She said, feeling his forehead. "Do you need another blanket?" She asked, moving to get one.
"No, just... stay here." Steven moaned, falling back into the pillow.
"Well, maybe you should take some fluids," Connie said, getting up and going to the bathroom.
"OH! NO!." Steven groaned, "No more drinks!"
Connie arched her eyebrow at the sudden energetic protest.
"Quite the apprehension there, Mister."
"I drank a lot at the last meeting...been feeling off...soon after."
Connie considered, "Drank what?"
"...Something one of the delegates brought from their home planet, it was tasty and reminded me of mango and cream... Said it was a very fermented stout...at least that's what it translated to."
"Oh-ho, no!" Connie giggled as she crawled up next to him, putting his head on her lap.
"Diamond essence didn't wo~oork." Steven complained in Connie's thighs as she brushed his hair with her left hand, "Happy you're wearing shorts..." He muttered as he snuggled into his Heartberry warm flesh.
"Oh, really, and why is that?" Connie teased lovingly.
"I like the feel of your skin on mine, so warm."
She smiled at Steven's honest yet weak tone as he looped his large limb around Connie's hip line.
"Why didn't the essence work? I thought it was a heal-all?" He muttered.
"Sure, wounds, bruises, disembodied limbs, burned flesh, viruses can even bring back the dead... Given the formula."
"Then why didn't it work on me?"
"Cause you...Mister galactic ambassador of Era 3; aren't sick...You're hung over."
"Hung over, like when you wake up from a night of drinking alcohol?" Steven asked, his fever slowly dropping as he started to feel acquainted with Connie's scent.
"same almost exactly," Connie confirmed,
"But I didn't drink any alcohol?"
"You got drunk on a fermented alien beverage. Good chance it's an equivalent to alcohol."
"You think?" Steven mumbled, getting a bit exhausted.
"Stout...a synonym for beer."
"Arrgh." He bashfully groaned," I did?"
"You did."
"It didn't taste like beer?! It was so fruity."
"Like a cocktail, perhaps," Connie said, placing her hand on his forehead and brushing his hair with the other.
Steven groaned, "I hope I didn't do anything embarrassing." He winced at his headache.
"Wow, don't remember last night, huh?" Connie hummed to him, "well, lucky I'm here."
Steven's eyes widened at the mischievous tone," what did I do?"
"Well, it is not everyday your Jambae video call from space just so a galactic assembly can serenade you while you're getting over a stomach bug."
"Drunk calling!?" Steven groaned.
"Video calling and singing." She laughed, "Strangely in harmony, despite the different languages."Connie smirked," I didn't know that language can sound so sensually rhythmic." She blushed, still laughing.
"Is there anything else?"
"Well... I didn't know you bragged about me so much." She laughed," What one of them called me, you Heartmate?"
"Oh, stars...Lady Percis from the Ria Nebula." He groaned.
"She was a little cutie...Surprised she's six hundred and how human she looked...excluding the extra eyes and orange skin."
"She's pretty new...And also she brought the drinks."
" Ah, that explained why she looked the least inebriated."
"I'm so sorry; I got too drunk to remember much." He apologized.
"It's ok. And the last I heard, you were the belle of the ball." Connie playfully teased, "at least that's what Spinel said."
"I was getting sick...But everyone else loved me." He brushed his head against her denim-clad thigh.
"That's a good thing, those who get sick together, stick together."
"Is that how it works?"
"I'm sure they're nursing their own hangovers, Mister. All while thinking it was a good conference."
'Hmm.... were you embarrassed?"
"No. More amused and a bit worried for all of you, but Nel and Yellow brought you back, so it's all good." She kissed  his temple," You're safe."
"No, I'm very...tired...Sick...Hangover."
"You're also what I like to call, Cute and cuddly," Connie said as she caressed his nape as Steven buried his face in her thigh.
"Is that so?" He mumbled into the flesh.
"Very much so."
"Well, you're hot and huggable." Steven yawned.
"You're sweet and snuggly..and maybe a bit sleepy," Connie responded
"Your fault, Heartberry. You're so warm and welcoming... you're my home." He nuzzled her leg, yawning again.
Connie paused, looking at Her Mister, her heart slipping as she felt her eyes water and mouth grinned.
"And you're always welcome home, Bisky." She replied,
"Thank you for taking care of me." He said as his eyes slowly closed.
"Anytime, Bisky." She replied, rubbing his back and humming to him, easing him into sleep.
She smiled, feeling him relax under her soothing touch. "Nap time Bisky." She cooed, planting a kiss on his cheek.
"I love you," Steven murmured.
"I love you too. Go to sleep." She responded.
"Be here when I wake?"
"Always, I'm here for you."
"Ok..." He sighed, snuggling into her, "...'m just going to take a small nap..."
"That's fine; sleep, love," she said, holding him closer to her.
"Love...is the only way to heal me."
"Then you will make a full recovery." Connie sighed, nuzzling Steven's head.
Steven yawned and gave a small smile at her, curling into her lap.
"I'll be here. Sleep, Hubby." She said as Steven slowly drifted off to sleep. She smiled, feeling his body relax, and he snuggled into her lap.
"You too...Love...You." Steven groaned, slowly drifting into a feverish yet soothing slumber.
Connie smiled, slowly strumming his back.
"Love you too, Bisky."

Glow or dark for ask game? 👀 not usually an and/or situation here....
Ty friend!! :33
So, this one is (or was, I guess) a one-shot I started writing for a recent Connverse prompt week. “Glow or Dark” were the two choices for day one, so I decided I wanted to try and find a way to mash them up together into one. This is adult Connverse, they’re like… engaged by now.
Basically, the idea I had was “Connie is kinda Big Bummer Steven doesn’t use his powers much anymore” and like… they’re all huddled in bed together, having a sleepy convo about this. My thinking is like… for a while Steven over-compensates? And he’s like… putting all his eggs in the “being human” basket and now somewhat neglecting his Gem side, and that makes Connie sad, because she loves both sides of him, and wishes he felt more comfortable expressing himself in all ways with her.
Also her fiancé can glow like a goddamn glow stick and she thinks it’s pretty, so sue her— it’s pretty and she wishes she could see it more but under positive circumstances *wheeze*
Snippit:
_
“Y’know, it’s kinda a shame you only glow when you’re really, really stressed out,” Connie murmurs out of nowhere that night, nuzzling herself even further into his side. “I bet you’d make for a nice nightlight.”
“Wait, what?” Steven responds, his words punctuated by a sudden peel of bemused laughter. He props himself up in their bed, scooting apart from her wanting embrace (she gives a pitiful but very cute little whine at this, still half-asleep) so he can actually turn to meet her eyes. “Where’s this coming from?”
If he fully understands the underlying question in his fiancé’s drowsy doozy of a comment— a comment he doubts she’d ever make while awake and alert— then she’s probably inquiring about why he never consciously utilizes even half the full potential of his power, not even recreationally.
And if he’s honest, it’s a fair question. He’s been somewhat ignoring this part of himself ever since he moved in with her late last year.
After all, it’s not like there’s much practical use for many of his abilities anymore. There’s no battles left to fight. No empires left to dismantle. No need to host those monthly healing sessions he used to organize, ever since he and the Gems bottled a large stock of his saliva for long term use. It’s nice, in a way. It’s like an extended vacation from all the stressors of this facet of his existence. Instead, he’s been able to focus all his time and energy on other stuff— like finally pursuing his GED, and doing some experimentation with some new instruments he’s never played.
Little things.
Human things.
That glowing she speaks of, though…
The remnants of laughter fade from his lips as he refocuses his mind on this topic.
He hasn’t gone pink in weeks. It’s the longest period that’s passed without a flare up since that month his gem fell into an energy conserving stasis immediately following his meltdown in his teen years. So why is she bringing this up now?
What’s really on her mind?
He asks as such.
This appeal for emotional honesty seems to jostle Connie out of the brunt of her drowsiness. She rubs the sleep out of her eyes with the furthest edge of her knuckles and then parts her lips again.
“It’s just… you never use them anymore,” she says, her brow creasing inwards. “Any of them. And of course I understand why, but…”
“But—?”
“But sometimes… I wish things weren’t so muddled for you. That you felt free to express yourself as both a human and a Gem in this space.”
His brows thread together as he considers all this, his confusion-addled mind looping right back to the throwaway, sleepy statement that hurtled this whole conversation into being in the first place. “So, wait— you’re saying you want me… to glow for you—?”

I was just over a month away from turning 9. 3rd grade. We were just starting circle time.
My teacher was mid sentence when the classroom phone rang. She put [names changed slightly for privacy] Joe and Caryn in charge of the classroom in a rushed breath as she ran from the room - the fastest I had ever seen her move since a kid got knocked out on the playground by a Dodgeball game gone wrong.
We were told to sit quietly and wait.
We were kids, so of course we immediately started talking. But we all knew. We all knew something was wrong. Mrs T and Mrs W were tough as nails and strict but fun. They didn't rush out without clear directions. They didn't RUSH. Period.
They certainly didn't just leave 50 kids under the age of 10 [two classes that shared teachers and a split set of rooms] unattended!
So we talked. But we were whispering. And no one got up. We looked at each other with childish grins but eyes full of confusion and nerves. First we made jokes and talked to our friends. But when 5mins passed and the teachers hadn't returned, the theories and rumors and gossip started. A student from another room poked their head in. Looking for our teacher to ask to go to the bathroom, since his had also left the room.
Wait - ALL the teachers had run out of their rooms? It was a small, locked-down catholic school with barely 400 kids (or less) on the premises.... but still.....
Just was we began to contemplate this new info, the teachers all came back. With tears and pale faces and fear and grief and so many emotions on their faces; only a few of these emotions were ones kids like us could identify, much less sympathize/empathize with.
But we would. Very soon, we would.
She sat at her desk. With her hands over her mouth for a moment. She consulted with Ms W next door briefly once more. She rubbed a hand over her suddenly very tired, extra pale, and suddenly intensely aged face. She turned back to us all (now once more silent and in our seats; the kid from the other class having scurried back to his room the moment the teachers began reappearing) and slowly walked over and sat down. She took a deep breath.
And she began teaching again.
Eventually, someone got wind of an overheard (read:eavesdropped) piece of the adults' connversations. Thus, the whispers started anew (during recess, where we could hide what we knew from the teachers).
Someone died. Oh, lots of people. A plane crashed. On purpose. No, it was an explosion! No, someone shot someone. No! Billy said for SURE that someone drove into the capital!
That one stopped us for a moment. A split second of pure silence on the playground. Of an elementary school.
The teachers looked up. We all quickly made connversation about polly pockets, pokemon, and whatever it was the boys were talking about.
Then the whispers started again. The teachers too weary and scared to stop the rumor mill. A plane crashed into an important building and lots of people died.
By the time I got picked up, that was the "rumor" that had stuck with me. We would all regret our gossip and feel guilty, shamefaced, over how we reacted and how on-the-nail we were the next day.
At home, the adults were sad. Angry. Scared. Outraged. Appalled. Scared. Disbelieving. Confused. Scared. Skeptical. Nervous. Scared.
I couldn't identify then, what it was I was seeing on my families' faces. I can now, in retrospect. I am probably remembering some of it perfectly, and some may just be retrospecrive extrapolation from an adults view of knowing exactly how that day would affect the next decade or two.
That night, the news was on everywhere. Radio, TV, my dad even grabbed a new newspaper in the evening from the gas station. Voices and pictures. Live updates and re-casts. A cacophony of mournful sounds and feelings.
Grief. Outrage. Fear.
Those feelings would remain for weeks. Months. Years. A lifetime.
Thr candlelight vigil and moment of silence that evening, standing on the porch with one of the adults, looking out, at the sky. Our neighbors, the land around us. For a moment I felt like a patriot, though I barely understood the word. For a moment, in my young soul, I felt the fury, unbearable grief, determination, and pride of a thousand souls. A hundred thousand. A million.
Never Forget.
I have NEVER forgotten that day. The details may have grown fuzy, the exact faces and names blurred. But the feelings? Those remain and will forever. And they have GROWN.
I will NEVER forget what they did to us. That day and the years to come. What that day sparked in what was my then-future. Now-past. War. Fear. Anger. Strength. Patriotism. Lies. Truth. Pride. Honor. Togetherness. Division. Determination. Survival. Above all, survival.
My feelings about what EXACTLY happened that day. The things I know and feel that are strictly my own thoughts, opinions, feelings, knowledge.... are too complicated to discuss here. [Readers may feel free to ask me in private, but only if you are willing to have an open mind, learn, or at least be willing to agree to disagree. My thoughts and opinions on this subject specifically are not something that can be changed by any of you, I promise. Divine judgement will and has been passed.]
However, my long reaching experiences from a metaphysical standpoint, I will share. Not only for me, not only to bring understanding to those who will read this next part with open mind and heart, but also for those I speak of and for. To grieve them, to honor them, to share their stories. To remember them in my own way.
**⚠️If you do not believe in reincarnation, inheriting emotions and memories from others [versions of you or simply others for which you have a connection], and a universal connection for souls, etc, this next part may be of little interest to you. It may make you roll your eyes, or laugh, or scoff. Or it may make you think. It may intrigue you. Either way, whatever your reaction. I will delete any disrespectful, hateful or bully-type comments regarding this post in general but especially this part. These are the experiences I was given. Take it or leave it. Read on or scroll on. Whatever you feel is for you. This is also a trigger warning: the rest of this post is a graphic depiction of three peoples deaths in the towers that day. Here is your chance to exit the reading of this post*
For many years, virtually since the one year anniversary until this date last year, I have been assigned to grieve these people. I have a soulful connection to this event. I feel them. I have relived their memories in my dreams every year for the three days surrounding these moments.
Last year, I did my own version, essentially, of a grief and death ritual and was able to release these connections. The feelings can still be recalled, the memories still crisp in my mine if I think about them, but the sting is lessened, the edges blurred, and compulsory side of it gone. So I am finally able to share these. For their sakes and mine.
She was on the 51st floor when they called for the evacuation. She had felt the shaking, the impact. She had heard rumors that a plane had hit the tower. She didn't know what to believe.
She was on the tenth floor when the smoke started filling the staircase. She was on the 6th when the heat became noticeable. Every floor they reached, more people were added to the scared, confused throng. Every floor, she felt the nervous tension increase a notch. Every minute the smells changed and increased. Sweat, smoke, fear. Every step the sounds became more and more overwhelming. Hurried and panicked voices, alarms blarring, Feet stomping. Bangs and cracks and crashes. Screaming from elsewhere. And this strange roaring or whirring that was getting louder and louder.
She was in a large group now. As she ran her hand along the wall, rounding a corner to descend more steps, she touched the faded black number four. The grit on her fingers transfixed her for a mere second. A combination of smoke, water from the automated sprinklers, and paint peeling from age and the current heat. The wall once pristine white was yellowed.
She felt so confused, so scared. It was so hot. So hard to breathe.
She had just reached the railing to descend to level three when the shaking started.
A rushing wind; hot, stifling. Screaming from above. It got darker and darker as seconds ticked by, almost in slow motion in her mind. She looked up and let out a small breathy scream of horror as she realized: the floors above her were collapsing. As the staircase around her crumbles and collapses, and she feels the debris begin to rain upon her, she closes her eyes and the world goes black.
She was almost out. She was almost there. Instead she remains a lost and missing person. Among the many whose body was never fully recovered. This is the only lost soul whose memory I retained in such detail, semi forced to relive it every year. The two others I was given were much less detailed, much less....full of grity details. But still just as tragic. Still just was heart and soul wrenching.
On the 101st floor the smoke was everywhere. The heat all encompassing. The fire was creeping closer. As she hid beneath the desk, she tried the phones again. Tried again to call for help. All around her her friends and coworkers were trying cell phones and desk phones, yelling to each other across the room and across to other offices, trying to get and share whatever information they had.
Were they supposed to wait here? Try to escape? Time passed and soon their decision was made for them when the fire began filling the hallway outside their set of offices. Shelter in place and wait for rescue. The firemen were there, on their way to get them out.
She looked around and let out a breath of despair and yet somehow acceptance. She looked at the terrified faces of her co-workers, and she knew in that moment. No one was going to reach them in time.
She gave her desk neighbor an attempt at a reassuring smile, took a deep breath, and looked out the window at the sky. The ground rumbled, she said a prayer, and felt the beginning of tears as the floor gave way beneath her.
Whether her family recieved closure or not is unknown to me. I sincerely hope they did.
As he looked out the window he was crouching near, the glass long ago blown out, he trembled. The wind rushing through the room was hot. He wiped sweat off his brow and gazed around the room. He quickly shut his eyes, trying to catch his breath that seemed to be permanently out of reach.
His guilt and regret over what he had done to get where he was and the followup realization that none of it mattered anymore is/was palpable to anyone who witnessed his final moments.
He opened his eyes again, glancing across the room once more and just as quickly shut his eyes once more. The image of his secretary sprawled across the floor, eyes wide, one shoe missing, no longer breathing..... burned into his mind for the short remainder of his time on this planet.
The debris had struck her on the head as parts of the ceiling collapsed. The giant crater in the center of the room preventing the few that survived the initial impact from escaping. Now they few were scattered around the remainder of the room, all in similar positions to him. Looking around, scared, just trying to survive.
The smoke began to thicken. Breathing became impossible. His head began to pound. He got dizzy, his face tingly. Oxygen deprivation. He couldn't breath. Edges of his vision grew darker and darker. He laid down and closed his eyes, this time never to reopen.
May they all rest in peace. May there always be justice and judgment against all who were and are responsible. May we never forget what they did.

Caring and Comfort
I want to thank @ponpasta for allowing me to write this one-shot biased of a beautiful piece of SU artwork. Created by said talented and skilled artist. I hope you’ll enjoy! ;) Here is the link to the fanart:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun was setting on another beautiful day on Beach City. Some spent there days relax and enjoying the weekend. Some traveled, others shopped and most just took an extra hour or five to sleep in.
But not for Connie
Cram school was becoming more and more like a job. But she wasn’t going to give-up just because it got harder. She was a straight A student. Earning nothing less than that within her entire education so far. Was she pressured to be ‘perfect’?
Her parents knew she was a hard worker, always supporting and telling her it was okay to just do her best. So not by them. The school emphasized the importance of an education but gave even failing students the benefit of the doubt (to an extent but still). Not there either.
Connie wasn’t pressured by anyone or by anything to be a perfect student. She pressured herself. Why? Well she loved the praise she received when doing a great job. Plus colleges were more open to those who have good grades. She wanted to get into a good one. Jay Hawk university was a tough college to get into. Surely they wouldn’t expect anything less than perfection, right? And she certainly wasn’t going to allow one bad grade on her record.
So she worked herself to the bone. Dark circles under her eyes, Coffee nearby and loads of school work piled up around her. She did take her time to learn and absorb any new information correctly. Reviewing old info over and over as not to forget.
Then exams came around.
Tests were one thing. A simple full day reviewing and getting a jump start of the new material was easy. Exams? ... All hell broke loose. Her room was too small for all the extra desk space. The kitchen in her house had horrible lighting. The living room was too susceptible and cozy for her to loose focus easily. Heck, even the Buddy Budwick library had to many other students crammed in there to study. What she needed was a new place.
A certain beach house by the other side of a cliff.
Now it was stereotypical that girlfriends and boyfriends distracted each other when a certain test came up. However Steven knew how important school was for Connie. A new environment to study in was quite refreshing. So he agreed to let her study at his place. The waves were calming, the gems away on a Little Homeschool field trip and he was alone. It was a good setting for her to focus, from what he had looked up on the internet.
He cleared the table, made snacks and refreshments, a pillow for her to sit on in case the chair grew uncomfortable and even made a playlist for her to listen too. He even had bought extra paper, pens/mechanical pencils, erasers, highlighters and sticky notes just in case. Soon Connie had arrived and was walking up the front door steps. Note cards in hand, pushing them into her pockets.
“Hi Connie, come on in.” Steven held the door wide open for her.
“Hi Steven, thank you so much for letting me study here.” Connie paused and gasped with a blush as she saw the array of snacks and study supplies on the table. “You did all this for me?”
“Of course, I know this is a stressful time for you. So I wanted to make sure you were prepared.” Steven ran a hand behind the back of his head whilst explaining to her. Watching as she smiled brightly and set her bag down. Throwing herself in his embrace as her arms wrapped around his neck. Pecking his lips a couple of times with gratitude.
“I can’t thank you enough!” A second later she was pulling out her laptop, books, notes she had taken, etc. Steven chuckled at the sight and sighed. Looking at her while she set up her workspace. Then walking over as she sat down, cradling her cheek and turned her gently(with permission) so her eyes were on him; placing a gentle kiss on her lips briefly.
“I’ll be upstairs if you need anything. Take all the time you need.” With another peck on her cheek he walked upstairs and began to play some old video games. Taking some much needed “me-time” for himself. Connie instantly began her work. Starting with what she was going over while on her way here.
Hours had passed. Steven only went down once to get a drink, some snacks himself and to use the bathroom. Making sure to be quiet as Connie seemed to be in her own private world. He adored her perseverance, yet hated to see her over-working herself. Some of her behaviors were almost identical to his own when he ran Little Homeschool. It took a snow day with his family, and a good heart to heart, to remind himself to slow down and relax.
Still he didn’t want to break her concentration. This was her exams she was studying for after all. However he didn’t want the matter to slide. So he began to plan out a day for the two of them to relax and enjoy the day. No school, no work, just fun times like they did years ago. Once back upstairs he took out an old journal and began to write a few ideas for what they would do together.
By the time Steven was done, it was around seven o’clock in the evening. It seemed like a good idea to check on how she was doing. Ordering their favorite pizza was another good idea. However what he saw downstairs surprised him. Connie had her arms folded on the table and her head rested on top. Face hidden in her notes.
Reaching out he placed his hand on her shoulder. Only to be met with her head jerking up and a face covered in tears. Eyes swollen red and a bit puffy. It broke his heart to see her like this. Pulling up a chair to sit beside her using his thumb to brush away her tears.
“Connie, what’s wrong?”
“I-I can’t seem t-to retain aany m-more i-i-information!” She sniffed closing her eyes, head bowing in shame as Steven pulled her close. Her head on his shoulder her arms drooping to the floor. One hand on her waist, the other stroking her hair as he felt how much her entire body ached.
“It’s okay Connie, you learned a lot and I know you can pass this exam.”
“No! I need to learn everything! I have to get an A on this exam and be perfect! I have to be prefect!” By the time she had begun venting, fresh, hot tears fell as her arms clutched onto the front of his infamous black and yellow star shirt.
“What do you mean ‘you have to be perfect’? You don’t have to be anyone but yourself Connie.”
“I’ll be a failure!....I don’t-.... I can’t-... I’m so scared Steven! What if I get rejected by Jay Hawk?! What if I don’t get into a good college?! What am I going to do if that happens?! ....I....I don’t want to fail Steven....I can’t afford to fail...” With every claim and question that came from her lips, he only held her tighter.
This was his beloved Connie. His best friend, his teammate, his jam bud. It was only natural for her to feel this way. But hearing it from her right now broke his heart in pieces like a shattered gem. With determination in his heart, he kissed the top of her head before responding.
“Shh.... listen to me Connie. I know you are a very intelligent woman. You can get those A’s because you have applied herself a lot more than anyone I’ve ever seen. However you do not need to be perfect to be who you are. If Jay Hawk rejects you, then it’s there loss. There are so many colleges out there who would love to have you as their student.
Connie, Garnet may know the future, but even she has trouble seeing unforeseen possibilities. It’s okay to be scared, but it’s even better to know you have people like your parents, friends, the gems, my dad, myself and many others. We are here for you like you were here for me. I’m going to do the same thing for you.”
“Will you still love me?” Her voice was so quiet yet he smiled and rested his head on top of hers.
“Of course, silly. I will always love you no matter what. Even if you over work yourself.” He smiled more upon hearing her faint giggling, soon followed by a yawn.
“I love you, Steven...” She yawned again. “I’m so...tired.” With another yawn coming out, Steven picked her up in his arms and carried her upstairs. Humming a gentle tune, lulling her to sleep. It didn’t take long for her to begin falling asleep. In fact it was the quickest time he ever saw her doing so. They had so much more to talk about but for now, sleep was more important.
Once in his room he slid himself and her in the bed. Pulling the comforter over them both. Watching as she snuggled into his chest. Himself running his hand through her soft curls. Ending his sweet and serene lullaby for her. Whispering one last thing to her. One phrase he will continue to say forever.
“I love you too, my beloved Connie.”
The Butterfly's Always Bigger in Somebody Else's Mind
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Of course Connie had heard the term before, her mother was a doctor. And it was certainly no surprise when her boyfriend was diagnosed, of course. It wasn't exactly a secret, and anyone could see how the weight that had been put on Steven's shoulders could cause such a breakdown and such a condition. Years upon years of shouldering the weight of his family and friends’ emotional well-being and the fate of the universe itself sinking heavily into his psyche.
Being impressed, Connie thought to herself, is not always a positive thing. Many were impressed that it had taken this long for Steven to crack, though this didn’t mean that anybody was proud of the fact that he had hidden such a large part of himself for so long, it was merely a shock, acknowledging that it must have been incredibly difficult rather than admiring the feat that had taken such a toll on him.
Recovery, or stabilization at least, was not linear, and she knew that. There were ups and there were downs, and while her lover was participating in therapy now, and taking his meds rather consistently, she knew that she couldn’t expect things to just magically get better as they had so many times before. And this, perhaps, was why she was now pacing around the kitchenette of her and Steven’s small apartment, her phone in her hand as she massaged her temple anxiously. Her dinner, which was a styrofoam cup of packaged noodles as opposed to her usual broccoli and oven baked chicken breast, sat on the counter, cold to the touch. Her fingernails, however, had been reduced to little nubs.
Connie finally flopped onto the little love seat in the main area, curling up tight with Steven’s sweater, which she had pulled out the moment she came in from school. It was getting chilly outside now, especially at this time of day. The night was seeping in, melding with the sunset as if the moon were drinking away the last of the sunlight through an invisible straw. Steven had a busy day today, she knew. He had a shift at the pizza place down the street, and then Lion was bringing him over to visit Little Homeworld to fix up some problems they had been having with training and to visit with the gems of course, but he had to make it back for therapy that night. This was what worried her really, the fixing and then the therapy--She expected Steven to come home worn out, emotionally and physically, and to need lots of affection and care. She was happy to give this to him, of course, but it was a fine line that she tried to walk carefully. Showing Steven love, of course, always came with the risk of admitting that she was constantly haunted by her own nightmares, her own flashbacks, her own paranoia. It wasn’t about the war, though. No, her stress was all around Steven.
For months after the war, especially when Steven had had his break, Priyanka had plagued Connie with questions about how she was doing, how she was feeling, if she was alright. Each time, Connie patiently assured her mother that the war was stressful, but it wasn’t really following her the same way it followed Steven. The strangest part, she had realized, was that this was true. It wasn’t the war. The battles, the fighting, even being held prisoner by the Diamonds. All of it had been terrifying, and it the fear had clung to her like a thick slime for  weeks after, as it had with almost everyone involved. With good self care and some mandated therapy from her mother, she was able to put most of it behind her. She just considered herself lucky, or chalked it up to having expected some big battle when she had first started training with the gems and Steven. But there was still a lingering feeling  like a chilling force starting at the very core of her being, and it only worsened when Steven began showing symptoms--It was then that she realized she, much like him, had been shouldering her own weight. And, much like Steven, it was the weight of someone else’s well being.
When Connie had first started training with Pearl, she was still a bright-eyed, sharp-minded twelve year old girl, and she longed for connection and friends. Steven had given that to her happily, just as eager for his own connections. Of course, they had both made other friends since then, and they never once regretted becoming friends, or thought that they were only friends as last resorts--They truly loved each other, and that just made it all the more difficult as Connie continuously watched her goofy, care-free, cheeseburger-backpack-wearing best friend turn into a literal monster created from suppressing his own trauma.
Deep down, She thought to herself as she cuddled on the love seat, chewing her nails once more and glancing at her phone. I sort of always knew it was happening. She was right, of course. And subconsciously, she hadalways tried to help. She knew, when she had started, that she was signing up for a battle. She didn’t know that she was signing up to have to sit back and watch, feel helpless despite all her training, as the one who had brought her into this was torn into again and again by a blade whose wound could be healed with no amount of magic.
It became evident to her that nobody else knew the extent of the trouble when they had fallen off the battle arena after accidentally unfusing in another panic attack, and she, despite falling to her own death, comforted the crying boy. Sensible through the panic, thereby saving them both. She still woke at night with a falling feeling, causing her far more panic than it would anyone else who felt the typical falling-as-you-drift-off sensation. She still spent sleepless nights staring at her snoring lover, watching him breathe, and snore, and sweat, just to know he was alive as haunting images of his half-dead, limp body laying in her arms wavered through her mind. She still would crawl on top of him in the night to prove to herself that he was no longer the huge, pink monster that destroyed himself and their city, and he was simply her loving boyfriend, who could still fit in her arms. She never told him this of course, for fear that he would once again try to fix everything for her at the expense of his own health, which was doing so well at the moment. She could never-
“Connie?” Steven’s voice sounded through the thick fog of thoughts, and Connie opened her eyes, seeing him crouching in front of her.
Steven was looking at her with a gentle sort of concern, and he reached out to wipe tears from her face that she didn’t even notice had fallen. She shuddered.
“Steven! Hi, I’m sorry, I--When...When did you get back? I didn’t hear the door.”
“Connie,” He said gently, giving her a little look. He sat on the love seat and pulled her into his lap, hugging her tightly. “It’s okay. I’m here, and I wanna help, I-”
“No!” She interrupted, wiping her nose. Steven looked taken aback. “I-I know you wanna help, Steven, that’s what I’m worried about! I’m perfectly fine, I-I just...I messed up on a test.”
“Um...Connie..? We both know that’s not it, honey.” He said gently. “I...I promise, whatever it is, we can handle it together.”
“Steven,” She shook her head. “It’s not a big deal. You need to focus on yourself and what you need.”
“Mmm,” He nodded, giving an air of thoughtfulness. “Yep. What I need is to give my beautiful girlfriend a kiss-” he paused and kissed her hand comfortingly.
She smiled a bit, despite herself. Sniffling, she leaned against him, hugging him.
“There,” He said quietly, hugging back. “I’m not gonna push you, Connie, but I’m always here...Whenever you’re ready.”
“But...You have your own things to work through.” Connie said quietly.
“Well of course I do, Nini, but why should that mean that you don’t either? We can do this together.”
Connie smiled a tiny bit, and Steven smiled back. They snuggled together on the seat for a long while.
Finally, Connie said, “Okay...”
“Okay?” He said quietly as the dark seeped around them like a dab of watercolor.
“I’m ready to talk.”
And the young couple talked until the sun rose, and when the light finally crept up, back into the sky, a very calm, loving Stevonnie lay in the small twin bed that they shared, the same sweater Connie had been cuddling wrapped around them.
Farewell to a Rose (Steven Universe Oneshot)
Summary: Post-“I Am My Monster.” As Steven prepares to leave home and journey the country, he carefully plans his farewells. He knows it will be difficult, but he feels ready. But there is one goodbye that he especially fears. A goodbye that holds a special, dread-filled place in his heart. “Hi, Mom. We should talk.”
________________________________________________________________
The door emblazoned with the Crystal Gems' signature star had never looked so terrifying.
The temple's door was menacing, towering above him, its ancient symbols foreboding. With the gems away, he knew what lay beyond would be lifeless. The only thing he would find would be painful reminders.
Once upon a time, Steven Universe would have done anything to go through those doors and uncover the temple's secrets. It held a powerful, siren-like mystique, reflective of his perspective on the Crystal Gems themselves. He wanted to enter their rooms, enter their world and be part of it.
It was strange, looking back, when he now felt a desperate urge to run far, far away. Soon, he would. But he had to take care of his affairs first.
A familiar, calloused hand squeezed his.
"You sure you're ready for this?"
He glanced sidelong towards his companion, his friend, his better half, his soulmate - words that had been tried but always seemed so inadequate for the depth of their bond. Connie's eyes bore intently into him, gauging him with concern. It was not an uncommon glance from her these past few months. He had made a reluctant peace with the need for it.
"I talked it over with my therapist. She thinks it should be okay."
"You keep saying that. But do you think it's okay, right now? You don't have to go through with this."
A part of him, growing more and more distressed by the moment, wanted to heed those words. To walk away with Connie and go do something fun. To just run, retreat and forget about this absurd idea.
To be content with what peace he had once found in the knowledge that he was not her. Of course, fleeing is exactly the kind of thing she would do.
"I have to do this." He stared forward, resolute, concentrating hard on making the door seem less frightening. "For me."
Connie squeezed his hand again, before letting go. She managed a small smile, but it did not quite reach her eyes. "Alright. Just keep in mind you can leave there at any time. And I'll be right here waiting when it's over."
He beamed back at her, feeling a powerful surge of affection rise through him, eternally grateful about the strange twists of fate that had brought her into his universe - and her insistence on staying there through it all. He reached out and grabbed her hand, leaning over to plant a quick peck on her cheek.
"Thanks, Connie," he said, voice steady, using his lightened heart to let go and plunge forward into Rose's room.
"...Don't mention it," he heard Connie reply lowly before the door to the outside world slammed shut behind him.
The bright, white and pink cloudscape of his mother's magical space never failed to take his breath away. At first glance, there was always something strangely calming about the endless expanse. It was not a forced sort of emotion, as he felt when Blue Diamond hit him with happy-filled clouds. It was a more natural reaction, like the sensation of coming home, into a space that belonged to you.
But as with all the things his mother left behind, there was more going on beneath the surface.
Steven took a deep breath. In. Out. He clasped his hands in front of him, finding some semblance of his centre to brace himself for the storm that would come.
He closed his eyes. Without a word, he summoned her.
The sound of the wooshing movement of the clouds was far too fast. A poof rang loudly in his ears, heralding the birth of the being from his mind's eye. The beginning of a difficult farewell.
Steven opened his eyes again to see the face he had been dreading. There she was, still tall and mighty as ever, but with a serene grace that could put people at ease. Her long, pink curls, her flowy, white dress, and her wide, calming smile combined to create what he still found to be an unparalleled picture of beauty.
He gulped, squinting his eyes. She was still hard to look at, but he had come too far to turn away now.
"Hi, Mom. We should talk."
Her gentle, happy expression did not shift in the slightest. "Of course, Steven. I would love to talk."
With a sigh, Steven stepped toward the image of his mother, who mirrored his footsteps. He stopped until they were a couple of feet apart, the wondrous warmth of her eyes more easily felt. He blushed under her gaze, before sitting down cross-legged, the softness of the clouds living up to metaphor.
Rose mimicked him again, shifting her form to sit across from him. She clasped her wide, gentle-looking hands before her, motioning her head slightly, asking him to speak.
Steven took in a deep breath. It was Rose who spoke first.
"Steven, I just wanted to say, I'm sorry." The smile ran away from her face and her gaze faltered away from him. A deep frown, unlike any he had ever seen on her, blossomed upon her visage. Her hands shifted, fingers tapping along the folds of her dress. "I put you through so much because of what I did. I never meant for any of that, but I'm sorry."
"I knew you would be," Steven replied simply. He dug his fingers into his jeans but did his utmost to keep his face neutral. He did not know how long he would be able to keep this going. He feared what might happen if he released all of the emotions that were desperate to burst out of him at once.
Rose darted her eyes upwards, glancing at him for a moment, before turning away to stare out in the clouds. "You did so much better than anyone could expect. You've done so much more than I ever could have dreamed of. You...you took care of them, Steven. Better than I did."
She looked towards him again, the glowing smile returning to her face once more.
"I'm so proud of you."
Steven took a shuddery breath at those words, gulping back the difficult mixture of joy and sorrow they evoked.
"You know, once, I would have done anything to hear you say that." He watched as his mother leaned back slightly, neutral again, taking in every word he said intently. "I wanted so badly to live up to everything you were. To be strong like you, kind like you, to love like you. I was always chasing your legacy."
He reached over to lift his black undershirt, displaying the pink gem she bestowed to him. He noticed her eyebrows quirk up, her head tilting slightly as she copied him, shifting her own hands to rest closer to her uncovered gem.
"You gave me everything you were. It was a lot to live up to."
"I never wanted that. I just wanted you, to be you, Steven. I knew you'd be extraordinary and special no matter what you decided. I loved everything and anything you could be."
An unfortunate, prickly mist started to form in his eyes. He took another couple of breaths, trying to rein in the haywire emotions of his inner-child, that part of him that just wanted to leap into her arms and let her endlessly whisper such sweet compliments to him. He could see her smiling gently under his watery gaze, as sure a pillar as there ever was.
But he knew she would crumble.
"It didn't matter what you wanted," Steven murmured after a while. He rubbed a sleeve across his eyes, composing himself. He unchained another part of his feelings toward her. Dangerous as those feelings could be - had proven to be - he knew it was necessary.
He affixed with her a contemptuous glare, pouring his anger into his look, mind flashing to all the times he had been attacked for being part of her legacy. He watched as her eyes widened, her hands falling to her sides. She leaned back as if pushed by an invisible force.
"Everyone saw you in me, whether you wanted it or not. I couldn't choose to be your son. I had to live with your mistakes - and fix them because you chose not too."
"Steven, I-"
"But I thought I had gotten past that. That I finally understood that I wasn't you." He rose to his feet, the buried feelings forcing him to stand. The bright lights of the rooms faded, reading his mood, as dark clouds began to roll in. "After everything I saw, I didn't want to be like you anymore."
She stood up with him as the sky above started to drizzle. Her face lost any trace of its usual calm, her eyes lighting up in alarm, her mouth forming into a grimace that seemed wholly alien on her. Her hair started to shift upward, charged by some unseen energy, her curls losing their perfection.
"I never wanted you to be like me!" Rose shouted at him, her voice rising with the storm, her eyes darting to and fro with uncertainty at the shifting clouds around them. "I wanted you to be you. I wanted you to be something different."
Steven balled his hands into fists, His fingers punctured into the skin of his palms, stinging slightly, keeping him grounded in the moment. A bolt of lightning punctured through the room, bathing everything in a flash. The roaring boom of thunder that followed startled Rose, causing her to jump slightly.
The space had unravelled faster than he anticipated. He had less time for the nostalgic image of his mother than he realized.
He took one last glance at her face. He noticed tears starting to leak at her eyes, matching his own again, mixing with the rain splashing down on both of them. It was cold. She tried to give him a shaky smile, reaching a hand out halfheartedly, as if waiting for a command to rush over and comfort him.
Steven turned his back to her, unable to face the broken image any longer.
"But I wasn't over it. And then I started making so many mistakes, just like you did."
The ground shook beneath him. He looked down to see cracks forming beneath the surface, destabilizing the foundation of the room. Steven planted his feet more firmly into the floor, intent on not losing his footing. The rain poured harder, soaking him from head to toe, embedding a chill onto his skin.
"I did what I had to to be free."
He turned around to regard her once more. There she was, tall, thinly, wearing a regal pink gown with a strange, perfectly quaffed ball of hair atop her head. Pink Diamond.
Gone was any fleeting sense of warmth he could find from the image of Rose Quartz. All he could feel was an icy disdain when he looked at the person his mother - that he - once was. The rain splashed across her cheeks but did not sully her perfectly symmetrical face. She answered his glare, staring down at him from on high.
Before he knew what was happening, Steven could feel his rage at the figure erupt within him, unmitigated by any semblance of a child's love.
"You ran away from all your problems." He took a step forward, pointing a finger at her, the ground rumbling beneath his feet once more. Pink's face suddenly lost its composure, her eyes widening with fear as she stepped away from him. She cried out as she lost her footing, stumbling backwards, but managing to stop herself by kneeling.
"You turned yourself into someone else to get away from everything, and then did it again by having me!"
"No, Steven, that's not true!" Pink tried to retort, but stopped, her voice suddenly vanishing from her lips. Her image flickered for a moment, her head momentarily becoming that of Rose Quartz again, appearing unsettlingly pudgy atop Pink's body, an image out of a funhouse mirror.
"I told myself I wasn't like you. That I was something different. I wouldn't abandon anyone like you did." His hand flew to his face, squeezing as his tears flowed freely. He maintained his glare at her between the spaces of his fingers. A half-sob shuddered through him, the lightning booming in tune with his anguish. "But I ran away from my problems, just like you did. I hurt everyone around me - my family - by not facing my problems."
Her head shifted again, becoming Pink Diamond's once more.
"I didn't...I'm not…" she did not look directly at him as her mouth mumbled along haplessly. The rain started to sully her hair, causing it to sink under the weight of all the water, slowly stretching downward toward her shoulders. "I just wanted to protect Earth. To set gems free. To protect it from my family. They were going to destroy it. You understand that, don't you?"
"Oh, I understand the problems with your family. Our family. Which I had to deal with because you didn't!" He stomped on the ground, a crack forming beneath his foot. He glanced down to see some kind of endless, dark void beneath the opened gap in the floor, but he refused to let that stop him.
"Steven-" Pink started to say, pointing at the increasingly dangerous state of the room, eyes imploring him to halt.
He persisted.
"But what right do I have to get mad at you?! I kept secrets! I told lies! I shattered someone, which was what made me doubt you in the first place! I tried to kill the same person you fought a war against! I BECAME A MONSTER!"
He could feel his gem pulse painfully, an echo of the rampaging emotions that had led him down a dark path. But he did not turn pink, did not grow any bigger. Even as the thunder, lightning and rain raged all around them, the storm clouds slowly shrinking the infinite space, he felt more in control than he was back then. He would not lose himself.
"Steven…" it was Pink's face, but Rose's motherly voice emanated from it, filled with kindness. "None of that was-"
"No! I know what it was!" He balled his fists beside him, staring down at the cracked floor, the once pink surface drained of all its colour, replaced with the storm clouds ensnaring them.
"I BECAME EVERYTHING I HATE ABOUT YOU!"
His empowered shout rippled through the air, twisting the storm clouds around them. The ground gave way beneath them, splitting apart, forcing Steven to immediately jump to a more stable spot to avoid falling into the emptiness below. He suddenly felt a rush of wind around his ears and looked up, eyes widening as he saw the air rapidly twist around them, the clouds coalescing to create a vortex, bringing him and Pink closer together.
For a split second, Steven saw her. They were barely two feet apart now. He could see her quivering, her eyes leaking as many tears as his were, her head moving about rapidly to process everything happening. She wrapped her arms around herself, fingers clenched tightly.
She was as lost as he was.
The two were thrown upwards into the air, the winds too strong. They screamed in unison, twisting and turning, unable to find any sense of direction. He lost sight of her, tossed about, moving at speeds which made everything blur together. Steven tried to orient himself, the wind making it hard to open his eyes or get a sense of anything. He concentrated hard, his body clenching as he conjured a bubble to surround himself. It did not stop the disorienting spinning, but it allowed him to breathe a little easier and clear his head.
"Losing control, losing control...find yourself Steven…" he muttered, taking racing breaths, tears still streaming down his drenched face. "Easy...find your centre...it will pass...let it out...let it go…"
His mind momentarily clear, he focused all of himself to give a command to the room, shouting it out at the top of his lungs:
"STOP! RESET!"
As quickly as it came, the vortex disappeared. The storm was gone, replaced by the familiar array of pink and white clouds. The light shining from the sky had returned, giving the space its warm glow again.
Steven found himself falling rapidly - he had somehow ended up about 40 feet above the ground. He dissipated his bubble to activate his float powers and reached the surface with control, gently stepping onto it with his left foot forward. He was back where he had started again.
He let himself collapse to the floor completely, burying his face into his palms as another sob wracked through him. He let himself feel everything - the guilt, the anger, the sorrow, twisting around his insides.
No. He could not break down, not completely. He had to hold it in a little longer. He was not finished yet.
Steven clasped his hands together, finding his breath again. For a moment, he imagined all those negative emotions flying away from him. Just for a little while.
"Steven…" he heard her voice from behind him, tentative, unsure. Not the voice of the unshakeable leader who had led a rebellion. The voice of a lost soul. "You're not like me. You're you. You saved the universe. You did more than I ever could."
Steven stood up again, wiping his face with his sleeve. He adjusted his now haphazard pink jacket, making a half-hearted attempt to smooth himself out.
He turned to gaze upon his mother. She was Rose again, though unlike any Rose he had ever seen. Her hair was a complete rat's nest, the curls haphazard, ends sticking out everywhere. Her dress had various tears, as if sliced apart by unseen blades. Her face was stricken with raw grief, scrunched, tears falling down her plump cheeks. Her hands shook, unable to calm the swell of despair overtaking her.
"You put me on a pedestal. Just like everyone else. You're wrong," Steven replied. He settled himself across from her, watching her as she cried, her beautiful voice lost to ugly weeping. "But I get it now. I understand getting trapped by other people's expectations. You became everything to them. Nobody ever really got to see this side of you, did they?"
Rose did not look up to him, but she shook her head, her hair thrashing wildly about behind her.
"I...I couldn't. The Diamonds, they never understood. They would never listen to me. And the gems...I didn't mean for it to happen but they couldn't really understand, either. Everything just spiralled out of my control and I...I didn't know what to do. But I didn't want to hurt anyone more than I already had."
She stopped herself with a fresh round of tears. It hurt Steven a lot seeing her like that. Watching her acknowledge everything brought him no joy, as he had sometimes dreamed it would. He was left with a mixture of sympathy, pity, and love, but there was no pleasure to be extracted from this.
"I'm a fraud. A failure. I'm so, so sorry Steven."
"I think you would really say that. Eventually," he whispered to himself, low enough that she could not hear, though the room might hear it anyway.
He moved forward, taking slow steps towards her. He watched her, a broken figure, collapsed into herself, shattered apart.
Steven gently put his hand atop hers, squeezing. He was amazed by how soft and real it felt, so warm, and found himself yearning for his mother's touch again. She paused in her sobs, uncovering her eyes to look at him, squinting between the tears.
"Nobody was ever a Rose to you, were they?" He let the question hang in the air, watching intently as her eyes flew wide, her mouth hanging open loosely. "I was a lot luckier than you were. I guess I have you to thank for that. You left me in good hands."
"Steven...I-"
He interrupted her with a hug, grabbing onto her tightly, breathing her in the way he always longed to when he was young. He squeezed hard, trying to convey that desperate, childhood love he still had for her, at the end of it all. The love he still could not help but have for her even as the young man he had become.
"It's going to be okay," he said, softly stroking the tangles out of her long hair. "You did so, so much good, Mom. You saved this planet. Saved gems. I know how hard it was for you. It's okay."
He lost sight of her face, staring out into the pink of her frazzled curls. He felt her strong arms wrap around him. Her face found a nook in his shoulder, sending it awash in her misery. The force of her weeping ripped through her core, and into his smaller frame.
"This is...Steven I…" she whimpered, struggling to find the words. "This is supposed to be about you."
"Old habits die hard, I guess," he murmured in reply, rubbing comforting circles into her back. like his dad often would for him.
They held each other just like that for a while, their tears soaking into one another, their sorrowful hearts fusing, beating in unison. Through all his attempts, all his efforts to get closer to his mother, Steven realized this had been the most successful.
When he realized he was not his mother, but his mother was like him.
"I'm going to be leaving soon. I don't know when I'll be back," he murmured into her hair after a while, as the worst of her sobs subsided.
"I know," she replied, holding him more tightly. "You need to chart your own path into this wonderful world. I'm so happy you're doing this. I love the idea."
"I'm not sure if I'll even enter this place again, to be honest with you." He closed his eyes, breathing in her strong floral scent, far too reminiscent of her namesake. "It's hard."
"That's okay. I understand." She disentangled herself from him, Steven quickly missing the tranquil warmth of her embrace. She held his shoulders at arms' length, regarding him properly. Her hair was still dishevelled, and her face still drenched. But her serene smile had returned, offering a surprising amount of comfort. "You have your own life to live. You should be free, without being burdened by me."
His heart panged painfully at that, but he gritted his teeth and pushed through that feeling. "There's one more thing I wanted to do before I leave. One more gift I wanted to give you. A memory I want you to keep."
"Of course. Whatever you want."
Steven sighed, releasing himself from her hold entirely. He took a seat next to her, sitting cross-legged again. She smiled over at him, scooching over to push her side against his.
He gulped, focusing for a moment. With a poof, clouds formed into a small television and VCR, a replica of the ones in his room. The familiar sight of the waves appeared on the screen, the film choppy with a homemade charm.
He did not need the physical tape to play the video. He knew it by heart.
The temple. Cut. The beach again. Cut. His dad, dancing goofily across the screen. A peal of laughter from a woman off-camera.
"What are you doing?" the disembodied voice asked.
"I remember…" Rose whispered next to him, mirth in her tone. "It was so much fun to make this."
"It looked like it," Steven replied. Despite everything that happened, the video still brought him peace - and longing. "You two sounded like you were really in love."
"We were." Rose laughed as Greg strummed on his guitar with a pair of corny shades on, pointing outwards with determination. "I'm glad you could find love too, Steven."
Connie's face appeared in his mind, and he idly wondered how she was doing, waiting for him when this was over. It was nice to know there would be a light to guide him out of this. "Yeah."
"Isn't it remarkable Steven? This world is full of so many possibilities."
It was not just the screen speaking now. The woman next to him was, too, creating a strange harmony.
"Each living thing has an entire, unique experience. The sights they see, the sounds they hear. The lives they live are so complicated. And so simple."
The video paused for a moment. Steven sighed, leaning into his mother's shoulder, enjoying the remnants of her presence. "It meant the world to hear you talk to me for the first time. I thought I would have moved on now. But I can't. I still can't help but love you when I watch this."
The tape continued. The room joined it.
"Steven, we can't both exist."
"I know. You're gone now."
"I'm going to become half of you."
He rubbed at his gem. He sniffled. "Yeah."
"And I need you to know. That every moment, you love being yourself, that's me. Loving you and loving being you."
Steven whimpered, shutting his eyes under the strain. "It's hard, but I'll try to do it."
"Because you're going to be something extraordinary. You're going to be a human being."
"Yeah. I know." He spoke lowly now, far more quietly than any human ear could hear. "I can't ignore that part of me anymore."
"Take care of them, Steven."
He let out a shuddering breath, reaching out suddenly to grab his mother's soft hands. Rose turned to him, smiling, any trace of sadness now gone from her.
"I will."
As the video continued behind him, Rose and Greg leaning down to share a lover's kiss, Steven lifted himself in time with them. He pressed his lips upon his mother's cheek, her smile fading.
Steven leaned over to whisper into her ear, wrapping his arms around her at the same time.
"I forgive you."
He had wondered whether it was pointless to forgive a dead person. It would do no good for her. But as difficult as it was - as much as a huge part of him wanted to hang onto those bitter feelings for as long as he lived - he knew it would do him no good. It would take time. It would take longer than this. But he had to let those feelings go.
He did not know how to forgive himself for walking in some of her worst footsteps. But he hoped this would help.
Steven buried himself into her shoulder again. He felt the lifeless clouds morph and shift within his arms. He oscillated between holding nothing and everything, a painful reminder of the limitations of her room.
Finally, another pair of arms wrapped around him. They were pleasant, strong, warm as a day at the beach. Familiar, yet not overly so. Not too big, not too little, just right. Squeezing him as hard as he squeezed back.
Steven let out a wail when he realized. He rushed to disentangle himself, leaning back to regard the image the room had conjured.
There he was. Himself. Pink, glowing, beaming at the other half. His gem half had grown like he had, wearing the same clothes, growing the same height. There was none of the deformity from the mental breakdown. His other half was a proper echo, a perfect, pink reflection.
"Why…" Steven whispered, utterly befuddled, unable to look away. He could feel the stinging around his eyes, tired as they were from all the crying already. "Why did the room show me you? Did I...want that?"
His other half smiled at him. The voice that came out was bizarre, a mixture of his own, his mother's, and someone else he could not recognize. It was beautiful. It rang through the entirety of the space, stretching on into the infinite.
"Thank you."
The figure stepped forward, fading in tufts of cloud, just as it would have crashed into him.
Steven was alone again, the room as pure as when he first entered it. He stood up, stretching, his limbs suddenly feeling heavy with weariness. His mind struggled to process everything that unfolded.
He placed a hand to the star on his shirt, and the gem hidden beneath the cloth. He squeezed lightly, feeling the hard texture within the fat of his belly. His halves seamlessly attached.
With a smile, he summoned the exit to the room, the door to the temple appearing before him.
"Well...goodbye, then." He turned one last time to the place that was hers. Theirs. "Thanks for everything."
Steven blinked as he re-entered his home, his eyes struggling to adjust to the difference in light. He glanced out the window and realized nightfall had come; he must have been inside the room for a few hours. The space was practically empty. But sure as she said, Connie was there, sitting on the couch, eyes staring off into nothingness, lips pressed into clasped hands.
Her eyes rolled over toward him and she was pouncing before he could react.
"Steven!"
Connie's hands were on his arms quickly. She wrapped them carefully around him, pulling him back into reality. The now. The future.
"Are you okay? How did it go? What happened?" Connie bombarded him with the questions that had built up over the hours. Steven blinked, dumbfounded, suddenly unable to find words. "Sorry, I'm probably asking too much. Take your time, we can go sit-"
"Thanks, Connie," he finally managed, giving her a grin. "It went...it went well. I got to see her and talk to her and-"
His grief overcame him once more. In a rush, a sob stole away his words and his legs gave way under the weight of it all. As the world turned dark, his eyes no longer willing to see it, he could feel Connie pull him in tightly, anchoring him in place as they fell to the floor.
"You were really brave," she whispered gently as her fingers stroked his hair. "I'm here for you."
Steven let out all of his misery, knowing now how little good it would do to hide it. He wept for the loss of a mother he never knew, those old scars aching again. He wept for the mistakes they made and how he wished they were avoided. He wept in sweet relief, for the experience was over. He wept because he knew, when this was all over, he would be able to move on.
The future was bright.
AN: I adored the SU finale. I cried a lot. But there was one missing farewell that I couldn't help but write.
I can understand why the Crewniverse didn't want to drudge up Rose too much after spending five seasons on her. But I couldn't help but want something a bit redemptive after the events of S5. She did a lot of terrible things, but she became a better person, too. Seeing Steven stumble so much in SU Future made me think of how those experiences might reconnect them.
Well, I hope you all enjoyed! Please leave a like and a reblog if you did! ^_^
Diamond Eyes For You [OS]
AN : Fun fact i actually made this in one sitting only super late at night and i will never do that again.
Ao3
Tw//mental health Tw//depression
A young girl walked around in search of her best friend.She wanted to talk to him.She was worried about him.Something about him changed his eyes to be exact.Before,they were black but now his eyes would change into those of a diamond.The first time this happened everybody freaked out but after a couple of tests from Peridot and Pearl they realized that it would happen when he felt a strong emotion or...when he looked at her.It was weird to say the least.She supposed she would get used to it with time.She called out his name to see if he was close.She heard heard footsteps coming near.
"Connie ?" The young girl turned around "Steven ! I was looking all over for you !" the hybrid smiled "Really ? Well,what do you need ? " he asked.Connie noticed that his eyes changed again.She blushed,because there was something special about the way he looked at her."Well..."she paused not to sure of what to say "I was wondering if you were okay." the teenager concluded. The boy looked at her with a questioning look in his eyes " What do you mean ?" the girl took his hands "Well you just kinda left abruptly and everyone keeps telling me you aren't really yourself these days" she responded the boy in question wasn't sure how to respond he had a lot on his mind these days after little graduation he just kinda drifted away from everyone he just needed some time.
 "Oh really ? Sorry I haven't really noticed, I just had a lot on my mind these days. I didn't want to worry anyone, " said Steven as he laid on the ground "Are you gonna join me ?" he asked Connie thought for a moment she had nothing else to do and there was no harm. "Sure why not ?" she responded the young boy smiled "Great ! " he said as Connie sat next to him "What were you thinking about ? '' the indian girl asked.Steven moved uncomfortably he really did not want to talk about it. He honestly really was not doing well these days.After Spinel he thought that he would always have something to fix and that bothered him but now ? The fact that nobody needed him was haunting him.
Connie looked at him.He seemed to be lost in his thoughts thoughts that were bothering him to say the least.It was obvious with the look on his face.She knew something  was up. "Steven ?" she said as she touched his shoulders in hopes of getting his attention "Hm ? Oh sorry,i was zoning out for a second'' replied the young hybrid. she looked at him and took a deep breath before speaking "Steven please...you know you can tell me anything" the girl said.Steven looked at her for a moment and with that look on her face it was impossible to say no.Steven sighed knowing this would take quite a while."Ok it's probably gonna take a while.After all i felt like this since i could remember but it's only gotten worse over time.."she looked at him for a moment before saying "What feelings ? Since you could remember ? Steven just for how long have you been bottling your feelings for ?" Steven choked a laugh "I don't know...I don't know...I know it's unhealthy and yet....i keep on doing it anyway " Connie looked at him worriedly how come nobody noticed this?
 How come she didn't notice this ? It's probably that Steven is really good at keeping his emotions in and she hated it.
 "Well where do i even begin ? Since i was little the gems always told me about my mom and stuff..but then it turned out to be a huge lie.And plus ! All the people that were hurt because of her ! Because she was just so selfish ! I know she tried to change ! But she is the worst thing that happened to me ! And i just hate that i am just like her at first it never really bothered me at first but now ? Goodness lord who would want  to be her !? Because I sure as hell don't ! And yet EVERYBODY WANTED ME TO BE HER !!!!! Like who Steven was didn't matter to them !!! Like Steven wasn't enough...i mean it's not true right !? But It doesn't feel like it ! " ranted the boy.
 Connie looked at him shocked but she realized he was becoming pink. She gave him a hug from behind in hopes of calming down. His breathing was fast " Steven please calm down it's okay I'm here.."  soothed the young girl.
His breathing eventually became slower "I'm sorry...i don't want to dump all of this on you .You don't deserve it ." said the human-gem hybrid "Hey it's okay after all that's what i'm here for ." Steven smiled. "There's more..." Connie laid her head on his shoulder motionning him to continue."You know my mom actions hurted a lot of people and the Crystal Gems sadly are no exception so when i saw that they were hurting i helped them after all they kept telling me they needed me.So i helped them but after some time i just became a therapist to them at first it didn't feel wrong at first i mean their family and family helps each other right ? But I was just a kid. They are adults and they should be able to deal with their problems." Steven exclaimed "Steven i'm sorry i had no idea" said Connie "It's ok it wasn't your fault" responded the boy."And now i just don't know what to do everybody is moving on everybody except me" said Steven before continuing "You know it's kinda funny i said that my greatest power was change and yet i can't deal with the changes happening around me" finished the young hybrid as in awkward atmosphere settled in.
Connie took his cheek in her hands.Steven locked his eyes into hers as blushes appeared on their faces.
His diamond eyes locked into hers. The way he looked at her was soft and mesmerizing.His eyes were filled with passion and love.He leaned and she did the same however he backed away "Steven ?" He avoided her gaze "We can't..we can't..i just i'm not in a good right place right now" he said " Oh Steven it's ok you'll get better i promise i will be with you every step of the way" she said he smiled.
His diamond eyes were hers to admire for eternity.
@sparkxii, my beloved friend, and i were talking about optiratch earlier, so here's a little something i whipped up based on our connversation. i hope you like it!
The inside of the former missile silo that now functions as the Autobot base is...quiet, during the night. It wasn’t built to house mecha, and they had to expand it to suit their needs, digging into the stone with Bulkhead’s help and direction, and the walls between the habsuites are thick, the rooms themselves minimalistic and barely large enough for a single recharge slab. Even if anyone were to move around, it would take more than a bit of restless shifting from mecha unable to find recharge to pierce through the rock. Ratchet would know—at the start, he had spent cycles doing his best to move as little as possible, afraid that any sound he made would get out; that if he were to have a nightmare, the others would notice.
He shifts on his slab, his pedes knocking the wall gently with the motion, despite how he’s curled around himself in an attempt to fit into the confined space. The sound of it judders around the inside of his helm like a reverberating shot, its echo never growing fainter despite the impossibility of it. Without meaning to, his digits twitch where they’re pillowing his helm, an old habit that he hasn’t managed to fully break himself of.
He’s been laying here for—he checks his chronometer and finds it’s been almost a megacycle. Irritation prickles at the edges of his processor. There’s no good reason for him to be displaying this behaviour, not when he needs to get as much rest as possible to do his job properly.
Mind set, he presses his optics shut once more, trying to find some semblance of calm within himself. There’s an old trick he’d learnt during the war—combat venting, they called it, effective despite the fact that cybertronians don’t need to breathe the way other species do. Something about the rhythm of it being grounding. He tries to fall into it; in for four, hold for four, and then an exvent for four.
Long kliks pass, seeming to stretch out into infinity; but still, his digits twitch, and his optics flick, and he can’t fall into recharge.
Derma twisting, he shoves himself up. Normally, he’d just lay there until the lack of movement dragged him into the dark, but right now, tonight—he can’t find it in himself to do so. Instead, he gets up, and paces back and forth int he confined space for a few moments, and then, finally, on sheer impulse, draws the door of the habsuite open, slipping out.
He’s only going to get a cube, he reasons to himself. Perhaps having some energon will settle him like it used to—that fullness of the tanks that makes so many feel drowsy. It’s never worked before, but there’s always a first time for everything.
The route to the main room of the base is one he could travel by counting his pede-steps alone, but he focuses on the slight imperfections in the walls that are practically landmarks if one knows where to look. They distract him from the urge to drum his digits against his thigh, a sound that, if nothing else, will irritate him.
The main room is empty and dark, predictably. He doesn’t really need the lights on to see what he’s doing, but he flicks them on anyway, making his way towards the dispenser, where a couple of cubes are neatly stacked on top of each other. Reaching out, he picks one up, and turns it over in his servo, for a moment, unwilling to make the effort to fill it. Then, it passes, and he presses the button on the dispenser, waiting for it to fill, and then flicks it off.
He’s just about to turn around and go find somewhere to settle down when he hears a familiar voice, tinged with faint surprise, say, “Ratchet?”
Without conscious thought, the corners of his dermas twist up. “Ah, Optimus,” he says, turning. “What can I do for you tonight, old friend?”
The Prime doesn’t answer him for a long klik, the silence stretching between them; just observes him with a gaze that would seem placid and uncaring to anyone who doesn’t know him, but to Ratchet, reads clear calculation.
Rather than speak his clear conclusion, when he comes to it, though, he says, “Would you mind handing me a cube?”
It’s a silent, tacit acceptance of the situation, and Ratchet suddenly has the realisation that this probably isn’t the first time Optimus has come wandering from his own habsuite late in the night, either. Instead of ask for confirmation, though, just fills up a second cube and holds it out to the taller mech, who takes it with careful servos. Even after all these vorns, he still has a carefulness, a hesitance to him that Primacy and war have yet to beat from him. Ratchet finds it maddening and comforting in equal turns.
Instead, he says, “Come, sit. A mech as old as I needs to rest more often.”
“I’m hardly a newspark in the care of the Nursemaidens myself,” Optimus says, but it’s not particularly heated; just a slight amusement tinging his field, along with... It’s not there long enough for him to get a good read on it, whisked away with much-practiced deftness, but it almost feels like sadness. Or perhaps exhaustion. These days, it’s hard to tell.
Ratchet purses his dermas, and makes for the specially-constructed couch that takes up one of the far walls, settling into it gently despite knowing that, made of a strong metal frame, it won’t crumple under him. Optimus follows a moment afterwards, and, for a while, they just sit there in silence, occasionally sipping the energon in their respective cubes.
Then, without warning, Optimus says, quietly, “How do you do it, old friend?”
When Ratchet glances at him, he’s staring at his cube flatly, optics unmoving. “Do what?” Ratchet says, though he has, perhaps, a better idea of what Optimus might be talking about than anyone else does.
“How do you stay sane?” Optimus asks; and he wraps his other servo around the cube. “You fought in the War, the last one. How do you lose, and lose, and lose, and not...” He trails off, venting heavily. His tone has been even, at least to one who doesn’t know him, but Ratchet can feel the anguish roiling beneath it, in the way his shoulder struts tighten and his finials flick back. “How do you stay strong?” he asks, finally, and then, without allowing Ratchet to say anything, continues, voice more desperate, now, “you always seem able to—to rationalise, to accept the grief, but move past it. I—I try,, myself, and I try to ask the memories of the Primes before me for help when I fail myself, but they never answer.” He leans forward, now; optics pained, but unwilling to show it fully.
They made you a god, Ratchet thinks. They asked you to lead your people, to protect them. What an honour. What a tragedy.
It’s not the first time he’s thought this, but every time, it gets more and more tinged with bitterness. To see Optimus like this, vulnerable in ways that the other Autobots would have a hard time imagining—it’s practically a knife to the spark. He doesn’t know what to say.
Still, he tries, because this is Optimus—Optimus, who has been his friend, and then his amica, and then conjux; his closest confidant, his oldest friend. Perhaps the only mech who he could possibly speak about such matters with.
“I am not as strong as you think,” he says, finally, quietly. “Merely very, very good at pretending. It...” His dermas twist, this time with grief and, in parts, anger. “In many ways,” he says, finally, “you are stronger than I am. You’ve never given in to the urge to try and forget or ignore what’s happened.” For all the good it’s done you, he thinks, and that’s partially exasperated, partially admiring. Instead of saying it, though, he sets his cube off to the side, and reaches towards Optimus, broadcasting his intentions clearly, and takes him by the shoulders, first, and then, careful not to overturn the cube the other’s still holding, does his best to fold the larger mech into an embrace.
For a beat, Optimus is still; and then he lets out a shuddering vent; drops his helm onto the perch of Ratchet’s shoulder plate. A few kliks later, optical fluid splashes quietly against the metal. It doesn’t last for long—Ratchet thinks Optimus might not be able to weep for very long, at this point, wearied as he is—but when it abates, his venting is more even. He’s set his cube down at some point, far away enough so as not to be disturbed, and his own servos rest at Ratchet’s waist.
A few more kliks pass, and then, slowly, he pulls away; not much, but just enough to rest his helm against Ratchet’s. “Thank you, old friend,” he says, quiet enough that Ratchet barely hears it.
Ratchet doesn’t reply; just presses comfort into his field; and the two of them remain like that as the night falls even more deeply.
Interrogation
CONNIE YASHA MAHESWARAN!!!
Heartberry (AKA Connie) heard her Mister (AKA Steven) roared from the upstairs, gulping down a giggle as his heavy steps reverberated as he ran downstairs, like rolling thunder. The sound of him hitting the floor of their home caused her to look up from her book on quantum physics and mechanics.
And bite her lips.
Two-hundred and seventy-five pounds of pure husky Universe glared annoyed temper steel from the entrance on their kitchen, in nothing but his baby blue sweats and her new favorite accessory in him.
His beard... His full black and pink-tipped beard. Two months delegation mission with no facial grooming would do that, she supposed...No, she knew.
It why she hid (got rid of ) his shaver, clippers, and cream. She wanted to enjoy this. This was the eye candy she was entitled to, damn it!
Bearded, topless, and irked. His fist balled, his nostrils flaring, eyes narrowed...She had to bite down the purr that wanted to come out, but she did re-cross her legs under her (his)  nightgown/ turtleneck
"Sup Bisky." She began with a tease in her voice, not much regular than usual, " Nice first night home?"
"Where is it you, little minx?"
'Oooooh, that cool baritone.' Heartberry mentally swooned as it sent shivers down her spine.
"That's a fine hi and good morning." Connie pouted, crossing her arms and turning away, knowing he wouldn't buy it, "you wake up and accuse me of something that I have no idea what you could be you can be talking about. For shhh~aamee.."
Steven tried to bite back the smile the mischievous Maheswaran seems to place on his lips effortlessly.
"My shaving supplies, where are they, Heartberry?" He snarled her moniker in playful warning as he took a step forward.
"Oh~ho!"  Connie stood up, pressing her left index, middle, and ring finger between her breasts and right wrist at her hip, a dynamic stance as she continued in a dramatically miscreant voice. "You're approaching me, Mister Bisky?"
"I can't interrogate you without getting closer."  Steven played along with her, taking the hero role as he stalked forward.
"Please, then come as close as you wish."   She smirked before taking a step back.
"Your movements don't match your words, Heartberry!"
Connie laughed as he gave chase around their kitchen table, going a few laps around before sizing each other up on either side of the.  She kissed at him in a jab before having to run out of the kitchen as he took a step back and leaped over the table.
"Come back here, you villainous vixen!" He yelled as had chased her into the living room and around the couch.
"Now, why would I do that, huh?" Connie gave him a deep grin," the hero's supposed to catch the villain." She chuckled as she leaned forward, swaying her lower half teasingly, "you can't do that? Surely, you're not gonna let your little Minx win so easily."  She finished with a slight pouty tone.
"You know, I know you're baiting me." He chuckled in slight annoyance, " but you're right."
"Ahhh~Hahaha!" Connie's excited laughter resounded around their home  as Steven climbed over the couch, and she ran upstairs into their house 'room.'
Steven rosed up in time to see her run in and gave chase into the fantastical never-ending library, which was Connie's default room.
Hehehhe!
Connie's witch laugh resounded all around as Steven looked from aisle to aisle and shelf to shelf, with no luck.
"How the hell could she disappear in here?"  He pondered.
"-Mmmmmm~!-"
Steven sucked up a breath as they felt her held nip right between the shoulder blades.
Chua!
Steven stood straight up as a bolt ran through his nerves upon her release. Turning around, he saw Connies smiling up at him impishly. Before he could grab her, she struck first.
By kissing his growl in a full-on lip-lock, running her tongue along the top of his gums and teeth evoking a growl motivated by passionate affection rather than heated and playful competition. All while rubbing his curly silky facial hair, getting another sound of appreciation and pleasure as her fingers played and teased with his beard. With a sweet and loving clipping pop. She broke the kiss, looking at his purring face as her hand fingers rant through his curls.
"You'll never catch me."
Steven broke out of his trance only to get kissed again, allowing Connie the precious moments to start her mad dash out of the room.
He gave chase a half-second later, giving chase to the laughing Maheswaran maniac as he ran through lanes of books, out of the room and into their bedroom, where he scooped her up off her feet upon just her entering by adding a bit of gem speed to close the gap.
Connie gasped as she found her world spinning and suddenly on her back upon their bed with Mister over her, knees at her hip length, hands at her shoulder.
"You cheated," she purred before breaking out into uncontrollable laughter as Steven fingers attacked her sides in a tickle under her sleepwear, making her kick and latch on to his wrist in a futile effort to cease his movement.
"Where my blades and cream woman, Tell me!"
"Neve~Aaaahhhahah~hhm!"
The feeling of Steven's mouth on her collarbone stopped her protest immediately, making her pull him down and press on her as she opened herself more to this interrogation.
"You gonna tell me?"
Connie breathed out her nose at his whisper in her ear.  "I threw them away a week ago." She answered ina submissive sigh.
"Wha-!?"
"But..." she reluctantly pulled out a case from the small gap between her left side table and their bed.
It was leather, with his signature in pink. -click- she flips the latch and reveals a professional shaving kit of stainless steel.  "It's a welcome home gift-ahahah."
She was once again interrupted, this time by His nipping along her neckline.
"Thank you, Nini -Chu!-."
Connie all but melted under him, kissing him back with the same adoration and wanting, nodding as they broke and rejoined multiple times.
"Don't thank me, yet." She nuzzled into his beard, kissing it, "You, Mister, will not be using this kit...I am." She told him, ruffling the facial hair.
"So your~rrrr gonna shave me?" Steven purred, leaning into her manipulation.
"Later tonight before bed, but for now, I'm gonna bask in my beardy bisky." She kissed him gently, still rubbing his hair." You just let me indulge myself."
Steven was too lost in her affection to care.
Title: Eyes Summary: It's dinner time at the Maheswaran-Universe household, and the Crystal Gems are visiting.
Late again (whoops) but here's day 2's short! I used this short to practice setting a scene, so tell me if my setting descriptions are effective. I used the prompt "Casual."
The short is also beneath the cut:
A salty-sweet, peppery aroma filled the air around Steven as he masterfully diced an onion before sliding it into a bulky pot, filled to the brim with boiling contents. Anything involving cooking had become a breeze for him ever since he had taken a few online culinary courses in preparation for fatherhood.
“Dinner’s up in five more minutes!” he declared as he dropped a pinch of salt into the concoction. His eyes flicked toward a bundle of veggies. “Actually, make that ten. I, uh, forgot to mash the carrots,” he chuckled sheepishly.
Pearl beamed, “Oh, I can help!” She startled Cat Steven as she then shot off the couch and practically skipped into the adjacent kitchen.
Drawing inspiration from the Beach House, the Maheswaran-Universe residence was quite open-concept. Given the right angle, one could easily see from one end of the home to the other.
“How’s the baby doing, Con-woman?” Amethyst smirked as she hung upside down over the back of a recliner.
“Is she healthy?” Garnet swiftly added from a nearby sofa.
“Probably healthier than any other baby on Earth given her dad’s powers,” Connie snickered from beside the fusion. Within her arms lay an incomprehensibly small infant; she was occupied with gripping her mother’s finger with the force of a thousand suns. “She has been very… grabby lately, though.”
“Babies are like that,” Amethyst shrugged, “or at least Steven was.” She tumbled off the back of her recliner with an audible thud. As she picked herself up, she snorted, “One time, he gripped Pearl’s nose so hard she almost poofed!”
“I did not almost poof, Amethyst,” the pale gem rolled her eyes as she pulled a stack of plates from a cupboard.
“Sorry, P; I can’t hear you from all the way over here!” the purple gem guffawed as she once more hoisted herself atop her recliner. “Baby Steven must’ve had, like, super strength, though! Maybe his powers kicked in sooner than we thought,” she pondered half-mindedly.
Connie quirked an eyebrow, glancing down upon her infant daughter. “You think Gracie has powers?” she murmured.
“There’s always the possibility,” Garnet informed; she absentmindedly adjusted her visor, seemingly occupied in her own thoughts.
Amethyst gasped, “Yeah, what if she’s just like Steven!? Have you guys tried, like, rubbing her spit on a wound yet?”
For but a second, Connie met her husband’s eyes from across rooms. Based upon his tight expression, she could tell he was listening in on the conversation. “No, we, uh, haven’t,” she half-muttered as she brushed her daughter’s brown curls back, revealing a pair of abnormally large eyes…
Eyes which had nearly given her father a heart attack only a few months prior.
Connverse "nothing is wrong with you" ;) can it be su au witch and demons??? If you want of course
I. Would. Be. HONORED! To write your AU characters here! THANK YOU!!!
“Nothing is wrong with you.”
There is just something so special about the stars at night. How they glisten against the dark blue canvas that is the sky. The shimmering lights illuminating it’s own beauty. The Aurora Borealis’s cooling colors streaking across the entire painting of the evening view above.
Though beautiful, the temperatures were not so favorable to most. Connie preferred a bit more warmer weather to this cooling sensation. However a nice change of pace every once and awhile was nice. Steven didn’t mind because he was always radiating heat. Feeling the cold was like a reverse version of a sauna. Relaxing and quite enjoyable.
But he had to make sure that Connie was alright. After all, she took top priority over everything. Her well being is worth far more than his own. The happiness or event content emotion she felt was crucial to him. So after a long stressful day of lessons, he decided to take her somewhere nice to relax. Making sure to bring along extra blankets and extra warm tea to drink.
Earlier that day, Connie had tried to attempt to teleport to another room. At first she seemed to be excelling wonderfully. Steven expected nothing less since she was becoming more and more gifted with each lesson she mastered. However to say he didn’t see her struggling would be a lie. Though she could teleport within a room, even to the ceiling, she was growing frustrated of not reaching her intended goal.
“M’Lady, perhaps we should take a break. You’re doing so well already, maybe we should focus on other tasks.” Steven suggested trying to get her to stop. Seeing how she seemed to be constantly teleporting throughout the entire room without stopping. Only to pause to get right in front of his face. Looking frustrated, and tired as well, in her expressions. A determined look in her eyes.
“I can do this! I just need to keep trying!” With that she continued to do so. Going faster and faster until she was nothing more than a glowing orb going from one inch of the room to the other. Steven scratched his forehead and brushed past his horns, getting a bad feeling in his gut. Violet didn’t even need to say anything too him to know something was wrong.
However right before he could do anything, she had disappeared out of sight. Steven stood there dumbfounded with a brief smile before it vanished completely. Walking to one side of the room, he pressed his head against the wall, listening as the cries of help came to his ears. The sound not emitting from the opposite room, but inside the wall itself.
Quickly he pressed himself into the stone structure and instantly found her. Grasping her hand as he pulled her out, both falling to the floor. Himself by her side patting her back as she coughed and gasped out for air. A couple minutes later she was breathing deeply and in a normal rhythm once more.
“Are you alright M’lady?” Connie didn’t even look at him. Staring at her own hands as they slowly formed into fists. She pounded one against the cool floor with a frustrated cry and getting up. Storming out of the room. Steven sighed and waited a few minutes before going after her. A basket of blankets, mugs and a thermos filled with a warm tea they liked. Finding her on the balcony he smiled gently and held out his hand for hers. His voice gentle as he spoke out.
“I want to show you something.”
“Thank you for bringing me here.” Connie spoke taking another sip of her tea as her eyes glowed like the beautiful aurora lights before them. Sights like these were rare, especially for the two of them. So they took every opportunity to see the wonders of the world as best they can. “I’m sorry for how I acted earlier. It was...immature of me to behave as such.” She looked down into her own tea as the liquid swirled around the porcaline mug.
“It’s alright M’lady. It’s hard to master a spell like that on the first try.”
“Steven, is anything wrong with me?” The question jolted him to the tips of his senses. The idea was ridiculous!
“Nothing is wrong with you. Why in the wide galaxy did you ever get such an untruthful thought?” He gripped the handle of his mug tighter, trying not to break it. Her own thumb circling around the outside of hers.
“I don’t feel like I’m growing at all with my magic. I think I might be at my limit and I-...I hate it! I hate myself for it!” Tears brimmed her eyes as she turned away in shame. Feeling like she wasn’t living up to her truest potential. Steven calmly, more so than Violet, set down his drink as well as her own before taking her hand in his.
“M’lady, you are one of, if not the most, talented witches I’ve ever seen. You have so much more inside you that is yet to be discovered. With what I’ve seen you do, I can’t wait to see what more your capable of. Believe me you have not hit your limit. Just don’t give up, please. Especially since you’ve come so far already.” Reaching out he gently ran his almost claw like hand through her soft locks. Bringing it over her shoulder as they slipped through his fingers. Their eyes locked onto each others.
“You’re worth more than you will ever know, Don’t loose hope when we’ve only begin.” With a smile, he was relieved to see her do the same. Maybe she didn’t believe him at first, but there was hope.
“You’re right. I just need to be patient and keep on going.” Taking in a deep breath she reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head within the crook of his neck. Steven froze for a brief moment before returning the hug. “Thank you for not giving up on me.”
“Never M’lady, never.”
That was his promise to her.
