The show begins!
Thursday. November 30, 2023. 8:10am. Stockton Court House 8th floor
I'm here in the hallway outside of Dept 8b on the 8th floor of the Stockton Court House. The long hallway on this floor which contains four court rooms is silent. Only me here now. I'm waiting for an 8am meeting with the court re: case resolution.
But the seething teaming energy of the souls who will be here for 8:30 court can already be felt. The elevator opens. the mechanical woman's voice from within says "going down".
That's the feel of the hallway. It's the domain of the "going down".
The lawyer's lives are strewn between department 8b and 8c the criminal courts. I spend so much time here on the 8th floor that I sometimes feel like I live here.
I can have several cases on on any given morning. And more cases in the afternoon. Walking between the courts, my clients want to know whats going on with their case. Other lawyers talk about cases in which we have co defendants or they are the District attorney. High stakes decisions have to be made about possible case dispositions. The human factor can weigh in. Clients and or other attorneys can be rude or obstinate. Some clients have mental health issues making communication difficult. There is inherent pressure when multiple cases are on calendar in different court rooms and time is limited.
I ride on my 42 years of experience in doing this. This is what I do. It's emotionally straining but highly satisfying work for me.
I may talk with in custody clients in the "bubble", the term given to the in custody court interview rooms.
I some times leave the building feeling like I've been in a washing machine.
8:25am the people are showing up now for their cases. They talk among themselves about what might transpire. I wonder what goes through their minds now? Most are brown or black skinned and young.
And, now , the lawyers arrive. The show begins!
(No one showed for the 8am resolution meeting)

In 1719, Catherine Jones appeared before the criminal court of the Old Bailey in London charged with bigamy for making a second marriage when her husband of six years, John Rowland, was abroad. Her defence was that her marriage to Constantine Boone was no real marriage as Boone was a hermaphrodite.
According to the less-than-reliable record of the Newgate Calendar, a witness told the court that Constantine Boone had been raised as a girl and taught needlework until she ran away to sea as a 12-year-old boy. Catherine Jones said in her defence that Constantine Boone had been exhibited as a hermaphrodite at Bartholomew Fair and other places. Constantine Boone confirmed that this was true, and other witnesses said that Constantine Boone tended to be more female than male. The jury accepted the defence – that there was no marriage since Constantine Boone was a hermaphrodite, and released Catherine Jones from the charge of bigamy.

Putin makes first trip abroad since ICC arrest warrant
Russian President Vladimir Putin, on his first foreign trip since the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant against him in March, visited the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan on Thursday.
Vladimir Putin has rarely travelled abroad since the war in Ukraine began in early 2022, and is not known to have left Russia since the ICC issued a search warrant for him, accusing him of overseeing the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine. Russia denies the allegations against Putin.
The Russian President is scheduled to visit China next week to attend the third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing. Neither Kyrgyzstan nor China are members of the ICC. The organisation was created to prosecute war crimes.
Russia’s ties with other countries in the region, which it has traditionally considered its allies, have come under pressure due to their enforcement of Western sanctions imposed on Russia over Ukraine.

It was a really, really good political news day today in the US (4/4/23)
For anyone who hasn't heard, not only did Trump get arrested, but also:
-We found out that the legal case against him in this prosecution (stormy daniels hush money case) is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than people had speculated. Like, wow do they have receipts.
-In fact, the evidence was so entirely there that the new question on prime time news (well, at least on msnbc lol) is "Hey, why didn't the federal courts prosecute him for this already???)
-Trump FAILED UTTERLY in his attempts to rally mass protests and demands for "death and destruction" if he was arrested. There was no violence at the arrest at all, and as for Trump supporters? They failed to show up in any kind of numbers--reportedly only about a hundred people were protesting the arrest
-We (aka Judge Janet Protasiewicz) WON what is widely considered to be the most consequential election of 2023, a Wisconsin state supreme court election that handed control of the state supreme court to the left
-Because of that election win, it is now extremely likely that abortion will be legal in Wisconsin, and that Wisconsin won't be able to throw out electors in the 2024 presidential election
-ALSO bc of this, Wisconsin, the most gerrymandered state in the country, will probably get nonpartisan, accurate maps, which COULD FLIP THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES in 2024
-In Chicago, Brandon Johnson, union organizer and former teacher, won the election for mayor, in a decisive win progressives, esp for meaningful criminal justice reform and investment in mental health (whereas the other guy was campaigning on hiring hundreds of new cops and being super tough on crime)

BREAKING NEWS: The International Court of Justice finds that there is sufficient basis for South Africa’s case against Israel and will not dismiss the case as Israel requested.
This is truly an historic moment.
Very well done, South Africa 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

The Diary: a repository of my most precious self
August 31, 1988
The workday was nuts.
A "Hill Street Blues—Laugh In" mix.
One  client’s baby was taken to be adopted. I told him tonight in the jail.
Another client, said he tried to hang himself. He asked “Will you be there tomorrow? "I’ll hang myself tonight if you won’t come "(to court for me). I said, "Just hang in there"…twice!  Oh God Lew, choice of words man!
And , earlier today in court, a client  got 2 years prison and the Judge pulled me aside to asked “Did I do the right thing?” The DA said it was slap on the wrist. The Judge was happy to see me, but then got snarly.
I screwed up on a case.
I hurt my lower back.
My jaw aches from the stress.
My hemorrhoids improve.
Heat of the day.
The Diary turns 11 years old tomorrow!
September 1, 1988
Happy #11 years Diary.
My God, you extend from late  CSU Chico through all this craziness to here. I’m glad that you exist. You are very precious to me. You are the one I can most easily come home to. A repository of my most precious self—
Today, again, a Jacuzzi talk with a male friend. He painted a bleak, bitter childless future for me if the gay life is chosen . He is hard to be around, but his beatings make me stronger.
End of entry
Note:
Hill Street Blues was was a 1980’s TV show about life in the criminal justice system. I loved it’s theme song and lead in section to the show.
Laugh In was a comedy show on TV in the late 1960’s. It took a satirical look at contemporary society. It was outrageous for the times.
Criminal law practice is a mix of the grace and dignity of Hill Street Blues and the slap stick insanity of Laugh In!
Today is September 1, 2023. The Diary turns 46 this month!
I started the Diary in my last semester at CSU Chico in September 1977.
My jacuzzie friend was about my age and very religious. He was trying to save my soul from rotting in hell for being out and gay.
