I'm devastated. They just announced that PAFA is closing their college (degree earning programs) after this academic year.
While they're continuing the museum, certificate programs, commitment to K-12 arts programs and continuing education classes —the college and graduate degrees are ending.
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the first and oldest art school in the United States. And the college is closing.
So so many famous artists attended or taught at PAFA!! All kinds of them too! Thomas Eakins. Mary Cassatt!!!!! Mike Berenstain (son of Stan and Jan, who took on illustrating the Berenstain Bears!). Apparently David Lynch? Don Martin! Howard Pyle!! Barkley L. Hendricks! James Metcalf, Henry O. Tanner, William Rush, Sarah Peale, Anna Peale, Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, Henrietta Myers Miller (known professionally as Peter Miller). Thomas Cole. Robert Henri. Cecelia Beaux.
(it is also the first and oldest museum in the US, which thankfully isn't also being closed).
I wish the US funded the arts better. The college deserves to be saved as an iconic and immensely influential american institution, similar to the Smithsonian network of museums — with government funding. Hell, congress people should be FIGHTING to bail out PAFA, sustain it and treat it as a PAFA-Smithsonian arts institute funded by the government. Or SOMETHING. :(
It's going to close after reaching 220 years.

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!

Got any good book recommendations? I suppose it doesn't have to be museum-y related uwu
Hello!
Thank you for this lovely little distraction ❤️
I'll suggest a few different things so you can pick your poison depending on the mood you're in!
Fiction
- The Dresden Files series (Jim Butcher) - The series is 16 books long but I shit you not, I will sit and devour this series in under a fortnight. It reads like a great TV show from 2005. It's campy, and it's about a wizard PI in Chicago. A very easy read despite the length of the series.
- Circe (Madeline Miller)- my all time favourite book. Written beautifully. I will crush this book in under 24 hours if the feeling strikes me. Just a solid book.
- The Secret History (Donna Tart) - yes, I'm one of those people. I like how it's written, even if it's written by a woman who seemingly hates women. You know that scene in Knives Out where Daniel Craig is like "It makes no damn sense. Compels me though". That's me and this book.
- the Belgariad (David Eddings) - do you like high fantasy? Do you like dnd and lord of the rings and all that? Read this series. This series got me into fantasy as a kid. Written mainly by a dude but you can tell when his wife chimes in because certain characters bicker in a way that only close relatives or an old married couple could. This series was life changing for me.
- All the Crooked Saints (Maggie Stiefvater) - just a good weird book about miracles and owls.
- Annihilation (Jeff Vandermeer) - better than the movie. This is a horror book. It is unsettling and beautiful.
Historical Fiction:
- Sacred Bleu (Christopher Moore) - features the personification of the colour blue as a muse and a character named Poopstick. You WILL learn about art history against your will (but you will enjoy it)
- Girls Waits with Gun (Amy Moore) - about the first lady cop in the early 20th century. First book was good, the rest were .. fine?
Museum books:
- The Feather Thief (Kirk Wallace Johnson) - I haven't actually finished yet this but my friend recently bought it for me and I am stoked about it. I watched a video essay on the topic, and it's... cool. I LOVE heists. Probably shouldn't as a museum person, but I just love it okay?
- Anarchists Guide to Historic House Museums (Deborah Ryan) - didn't read this in full but it was a really refreshing take on house museums. I know several of my coworkers have this on their bookshelves and I am hoping to add it to my own sometime soon
- All the Beauty in the World - haven't read this one yet but its on my list. It's a memoir (?) Written by a long time security guard at the MET.
I feel like you will know me a little better after reading through this list. I'm a sucker for heists and happy endings. I like to laugh, I like to learn.
Thanks for the ask ❤️

2023 Wrap up and 2024 Goals
So I have been keeping track of what books I've read and what games I've played each year, for many years now. It's actually been really fun and interesting to look back and see what I ended up with, and it helps when I have to reference when I last looked at something :D So! I'm gonna put my Book/Games list year and combine it with any goals for 2024
Things I've read since Jan 2023
The Written by Ben Galley
Ariel by Steven R Boyette (read most)
STNG: Grounded by David Bischoff
Ascendant by Michael R Miller
STNG: A Call to Darkness by Michael Jan Friedman
STNG: Metamorphosis by Jean Lorrah
Denver Moon: The Minds of Mars by Warren Hammond and Joshua Viola
Masters of Doom by David Kushner
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler
The Tiger and the Wolf by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
This Gilded Abyss by Rebecca Thorne
Witch Hat Atelier 1-11 and Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen
All That Glitters by Loren K Jones
Comments: This is an example of like...I don't even remember reading some of these items. The STNG books (picked up from a library sale) were unexpectedly decent, I believe those were ones actually written by the show's screenwriters, so they read almost exactly like regular episodes. Also, I include manga (and some visual novels) on these lists because of the large quantities of reading ~ as such, WHA was probably my favorite read this year. The art is so gorgeous and the artistic struggles really resonates with me. My favorite non-manga waaas :Ta hmm, probably This Gilded Abyss, though I did not like the ending that much. Its fine if a book is going to be a series but I think that books should be able to be read as a one-off. I guess what I'm saying is make sure the ending is reasonably satisfying for THAT book, even if you want to set up for the next one. For example I'm well aware that ADSOM is a series however it's written with a satisfying ending that I can treat as Just One Book. Which I'm going to do. (Hopefully this all makes sense)
Currently Reading: Well my first book of the 2024 list is Heaven Official's Blessing 1, since its been on my shelf for a while ~ I'm already halfway through and just couldn't finish it before the new year. I see there's a ton in this series so IDK if I'll get through it all, but I do like it more (so far) over the other series by the same author
2024 Book Goals: I have a lot of unread ebooks so I'd like to start getting through those this year, as well as a couple paperback books on my shelf that have been there for years.
---
2023 Video Games:
Baba is You
Cats Organized Neatly
Resident Evil: Village
Ghost Song
Salamander County Public Television
Cassette Beasts
The Mortuary Assistant
Vampire Survivors
Cult of the Lamb
Milo and the Magpies
Pizza Tower
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (DNF)
Celeste (again)
Super Mario RPG remake
The Darkside Detective
The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark
Comments: Honorable mention is MyHouse.wad ~ I haven't played classic DOOM in so long and didn't want to learn how to mod it to play this, but I watched videos obsessively for several weeks when it came out. Its super cool. The Mortuary Assistant I found....strangely relaxing, I'm pretty sure this was not the common experience LOL. TGAAC made me kinda mad, I love AA but I COULD NOT with this one. I got 3 cases in, the pace was absolutely glacial and I did not like any of the side characters so I wasn't enjoying it. Oh well. My favorite game was probably either RE:V or collectively the two Darkside Detective games I just played.
Currently Playing: I just started Super Mario Wonder yesterday after getting it for Christmas. It's cute! I haven't played any mainline Mario games in like 10 years. Seriously the last ones were like Super Luigi Bros and Mario Maker 1 (and even then I think these are spinoffs 🤣)
2024 Game Goals: I have several games in my backlog that I would consider "Large RPGs", such as BG3, and I'd like to get through at least one of them. They're really daunting because of the time commitment required to finish. I'm currently working on some stupid grindy stuff in FFXIV so hopefully (lol) I will just take a break afterwards and can work on one of them.
---
Other 2024 Goals/Art Goals
Yeah I don't like to go too wild with goals anymore. 2023 was just a hot mess year in terms of my day job, for the entire year, and my brain got pretty scrambled. I couldn't think of any silly goal this year (I did "all Ghibli Movies" in a past year for example), so I'm gonna say:
Finish at least 1 sketchbook
Do/Post more finished pieces
Finish a piece of art I've had sitting on my desk since June 2022
I did a big consolidation of art supplies at the end of the year so hopefully I won't be so daunted by what to use in general. The ink challenge I did was very helpful getting a little bit of motivation back. I also have this piece of art that's been sitting unfinished on my desk for a year and a half and I really need to finish it, LOL. I think what happened is the lineart is pretty complicated - once I finished transferring it to a nice sheet of paper I got overwhelmed with the idea of 'ruining' it and put it aside. I really need to get it done though, however it turns out, and move on, as I think the lingering thought is blocking all other pieces.

New Newcrest News - Winter 2, Part 1
Tumblr media
New Congregants
On recommendation of the Graham family, the Evans family has joined our little church community here in Newcrest. It's quite a drive for them from San My, but we're so happy to have them and to assist them in any way they might need after they so tragically lost their father and provider!
Tumblr media
Engagements & Weddings
Even though they are young, Priscilla Johnson and Maxwell Sawyer Jr. have promised each other their future lives, and are betrothed now. Looking forward to a beautiful spring wedding!
Tumblr media
Babies
After a long streak of girls, the Johnson family has welcomed their second son into the world: Tucker Johnson! Mother and baby are both well, and the father barely knows what to do with two boys after waiting for one for so long!
After years of struggling with infertility, Madison and Connor Culver have finally welcomed their first child into the world. Little Connor Culver Jr. is the pride and joy of his whole family, and we couldn't be more grateful to have him!
The Sawyer family has welcomed little Henrietta Sawyer into their fold, and are delighted to raise her the way the Watcher wants to.
Tumblr media
Jobs & Promotions
Caroline Johnson has been accepted to Britechester University for a Distinguished Degree in Fine Arts! We so proud of her and her academic accomplishments, and are asking for prayers for her continued success!
Kathryn Evans has found employment as a legal secretary, and is currently working on her certification as a paralegal. While the Watcher frowns upon women in the workforce, it is admirable of her to sacrifice her best years to make sure that her brother grows up well.
Tumblr media
Birthdays
It was a most important occasion in the Johnson family. Garrett David Johnson is a toddler now, a charming young gentleman already who's ready to follow in his father's footsteps and become a diligent defender of the Watcher!
Both Savannah Johnson and Caroline Johnson are Young Adults now and have left high school behind. Both very sweet young ladies who are dedicated to following the Watcher, they're waiting for the ones the Watcher has for them so they can embark on their journey to being a wife and mother.
Abigail Johnson is a sweet young girl going to school now, and Tucker Johnson is a toddler! Congratulations!
Tumblr media
Little Lincoln Evans is a teen now, still going to school, but starting to grow into the big footsteps his father has left behind. We couldn't be any more proud of him and hope that he'll take after one of the countless wonderful male role models our congregation has to offer!
Kathryn Evans has celebrated her 30th birthday. Let's pray that she'll find the one the Watcher has for her soon, if she wants to have kids!
Four birthdays in the Sawyer family! Anne and Randall are both teens now, responsible, hard-working young people who embody the ideals of the Watcher, while their two little siblings Margaret and Jasper are children, learning how to follow Him.
David and Piper Jones are also teens now.
Tumblr media
Other News
The long-awaited autobiography Saved by the Watcher: A Candid Portrait of Church Leader David Johnson has finally hit the bookshelves! You can find this moving account of leading a Watcher-centered life despite the Enemy’s attempts at seduction in bookstores near you, in the biography or the non-fiction sections!
Tumblr media
Prayer Requests
The Watcher encourages selflessness, meekness, and modesty in His followers, but this lady just cannot stop rubbing her good fortune in everyone's face. Let's pray that her husband puts her to rights. He is a pastor, after all. (Abilene Johnson)
Being a stay-at-home daughter is a privilege. Please pray for this young lady to understand that she is not the mistress of the house. (Savannah Johnson)
There are just not enough young men in our church. Please pray for some Watcher-following, hard-working young men to join the congregation so all the young ladies have a chance of finding their match. (Savannah Johnson, Caroline Johnson, Donna Bell, Lily Miller)
A parent's love should be equal for all his children, it should be kind and generous, and not centered on just one son. Please pray for the Watcher to widen this man's heart so all of his children can fit in it, even those born from his extramarital affair. (David Johnson)
Preying on a grieving, vulnerable young lady while your wife is big pregnant at home is a horrible thing to do, and one that no true follower of the Watcher would! (David Johnson)
Children are the Watcher's greatest gift, and being denied them is a cruel punishment for past transgressions! Lying about a thing like that is unthinkable! (Madison and Connor Culver)
While Simstagram is a valuable tool to connect with other followers of the Watcher, it should not be more important than a woman's duty at home, and should not be an idol to them. Pray for all the young ladies in the neighborhood who are infected with this terrible social media disease! (Madison Culver, Priscilla Johnson, etc.)
The Watcher says that you should not judge, lest you be judged. Please pray for this man who thinks his wife's family is beneath him. (David Johnson)
Presenting yourself as a family man and loving father while ignoring two of your children just because they were born out of wedlock is hypocrisy of the highest order, and the Watcher will judge you for eternity for it. (David Johnson)
While parental guidance is of course important for leading children to make good decisions, deciding who they're going to marry for them when they're just fifteen is too much. Please pray for these men to see their error, and for the happiness of the young people. (David Johnson and Maxwell Sawyer)
Please pray for this young man to finally see the sacrifices his family is making for him, instead of acting like he is entitled to even more than he already gets. (Lincoln Evans)
Being a church elder and being called to counsel your neighbors is not an excuse to be a bully! Please pray for this so-called man of the Watcher. (Maxwell Sawyer)
A strict father is a blessing to his children, but some men mistake their controlling nature for the Watcher-given desire to lead. This family needs all the prayers you can give them, despite their outwardly perfect appearance. (Maxwell Sawyer)
The Watcher makes our bodies change as we age, and only sluttish hussies deny that. Please pray for that lady who just can't help giving in to the sin of pride and dyed her hair back to what it once was. (Henrietta Jones)
The Watcher wants you to have as many children as He will you, and preventing children is a grievous sin. Please pray that this couple has not sinned, because I think they might have been using birth control. (Madison and Connor Culver)

what was your transitioning journey like? You've gone through a lot of changes as far as I'm aware, and id love to know when this all started
this is best told in photos so under the cut is like. a timeline?? yeah. None of these pictures will be the best quality
This is around. 2017, 2018, all I know was I was walking home from school and getting ready to go to my first homecoming dance with a bunch of my best friends
Tumblr media
here you can see, I'm very feminine presenting with all of the pink/red and the overall just stereotypical girly look. This was when I started thinking, maybe this isn't for me. I originally thought it was because I wasn't attracted to men, and assumed this was because I was a lesbian, and so we go into phase two, this:
Tumblr media
now this is a very stereotypical lesbian haircut that came up when I googled it as a younger teen. This was close to what I felt the more butch/masculine feeling and for a while I was comfortable with this and rolled with it, assuming all was normal. My buddy had started having his gender crisis at the time, which kick-started MY gender crisis. I jumped very quickly into being a man, a transgender man, because I assumed that was the only thing I could be. So now we're here;
Tumblr media
I tried coming out to my parents as a trans man and sure enough they had a talk with me and told me to think on it more. Which I did. I was then at a point, who was I? What is my name? This begins the Adder Era, as I lovingly refer to it as.
Tumblr media
The Adder Era is one that a few of you may remember, I was about 14 or 15, and I was just chilling and jumping back and forth between a trans man and a non-binary person. It was at this point I learned I could have more than 1 set of pronouns, and after I met Jace and learned about DSAF. I had broken up with mine and jaces shared ex girlfriend because she was being very sexual very fast and I roll sexy slow. I named myself after Dave Miller from dsaf around the end of 2019 when I was 15. The Dave era complete with art and other things had begin, and I had gotten into a fresh and loving relationship with Jace.. I was Jace's Davey at the time.
Tumblr media
over the past couple of years I have definitely had a bunch of name and appearance changes, like David, Thomas, Marshall, Jeremy, and my currents, Michael, Vincent, and Fern. this had it's appearance changes with it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now we're here, in my mostly bald era which has definitely been an adjustment and honestly that's fine. It's definitely been crazy the past ~5 years and I wouldn't trade any of it for the world except those years I spent with two ex girlfriends °-°

ON THE ALL-STAR JAZZ BAND
COUCH TOUR: THE HEAVY HITTERS (Mike LeDonne, Eric Alexander, Jeremy Pelt, Jim Snidero, Alexander Claffy, and Kenny Washington!), SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 19 AUGUST 2022, 2nd Set
BLACK ART JAZZ COLLECTIVE (Wayne Escoffery, Jeremy Pelt, James Burton III, Xavier Davis, Vincente Archer, and Darrell Green), DIZZY’S AT LINCOLN CENTER, 2017 via YouTube
Let’s start with The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever by THE Quintet (Charlie Parker, his worthy constituent Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach) at Toronto’s Massey Hall in 1953. Quite a band with plenty of overlaps in NYC clubs and recordings, but pulled together for the occasion with a quintessential bebop set that makes a good stab at living up to its name.
But jazz, with its standard book and sessions, seems so well suited to the format that you could say that the Verve, Prestige, and especially Blue Note albums of the 1950s and 1960s were all-star bands—Dexter Gordon and Freddie Hubbard with Butch Warren and Billy Higgins on Takin’ Off where, arguably the leader, Herbie Hancock, was the only non-all star even if he brought in tunes like Watermelon Man and Alone and I. But those albums had leaders who brought in the tunes even if Rudy Van Gelder, Alfred Lion, and Norman Granz helped figure out who was on the session.
No, I think what I’m discussion here is the deliberately formed band, that whatever leadership structure, is designed to put and, as importantly, keep a core of players working together.
In the 1980s, a more avant-garde group of players including Chico Freeman, Don Cherry then Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Don Pullen to Hector Ruiz to Kirk Lightsey, Cecil McBee, and Don Moye then Billy Hart were The Leaders. They were during my hiatus so I don’t know their albums. Then McBee and Hart are in the occasionally still active The Cookers with Eddie Henderson, Billy Harper, George Cables and the organizer David Weiss. I’ve like their recordings but I can’t say they are more than the sum of their parts.
Let’s see if Artemis can bounce back after lockdown, but their parts—Renee Rosnes, Allison Miller, Anat Cohen, Ingrid Jensen, Nicole Glover replacing Melissa Aldana, and Noriko Ueda—are formidable. Their album and Jazz St Louis show were appealing, but I’m happy to see Anat Cohen and Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom this coming season. I don’t miss Aldana or Glover when they show up on the streams. But are they or any of these ensembles a team or just all-stars?
I’d spent the week listening to lots of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, so sextets and retrospective all-stars. But those were his bands with 35 years of consistent vision even as the music directors shifted from Benny Golson to Wayne Shorter to Wynton Marsalis and beyond.
Comes now The Heavy Hitters, with Mike LeDonne and Eric Alexander as leaders, as a recent addition to the format. These musicians are solid regulars I know from Small’s Live. Kenny Washington is the out and out all-star among them, but seeing him with horns is a treat. Indeed, such ensembles, often sextets, are an identifying feature of the format as clubs, on a night to night basis are trios or one horn and rhythm section with the occasional quintet. Jeremy Pelt is probably next in this pantheon for some very tasty trumpet work, but I also tend to underrate and undervalue the bench of trumpet players. I’ve liked Alexander of late for a nice middle tone and linear solos and Alexander Claffy is a welcome name on any gig for his reliability. It is LeDonne who is sometimes heavy handed, but not here. Indeed he steps out here with the bulk of the tunes and some solid not overly fussy soloing. Pelt was his reliable self with fine tone and thoughtful solo work. The most appealing horn was Jim Snidero’s alto and he’s the one who isn’t quite the streaming regular. But again the treat was to hear Kenny Washington have a horn section to whip into shape with his taste, elegance, and velvet glove power.
I thought I would get a Small’s Archive show from 2018 from the Black Art Jazz Collective but instead I found a 2017 gig on YouTube from Dizzy’s in Lincoln Center. The Small’s gig rhythm section was Victor Gould whom I’d heard in a recent trio gig, Rashaan Carter, and Johnathan Blake who would have been fun to hear with horns after lots of trio work. Instead, the Wayne Escoffery, Jeremy Pelt, and James Burton III frontline had Xavier Davis, Vincente Archer, and Darrell Green backing them up. Everybody got some space, but yes with six pieces the rhythm section made their marks with strong accompaniment. And they did. Archer is surprisingly forceful behind his thick spectacles and Darrell Green is solid. I did not know Xavier Davis but he shone in his couple of solos but even more in some very sympathetic fills and comping. I catch Escoffery often and he is, as he was here, solid and rich, but as the tenor player he wailed a bit. It was Pelt who was consistently tasteful, though he could growl. Burton was rich and patient in his soloing. The tunes were originals but thematically about the Black experience and so evoked WEB DuBois and Sojourner Truth as well as the plaint When Will We Learn.
BAJC, like Artemis and all of these ensembles, may be an occasional ensemble. I won’t wait for either of them or the Cookers or the Heavy Hitters to hear their members when they go out on their own gigs. But the all-star band has the advantage of, well, having all-stars.

Are there any screenplays or song lyrics you think reach the heights of literature?
Song lyrics definitely. Poetry began as song lyrics: everyone from the epic bard of Ancient Greece to the medieval Troubadours to the Renaissance playwrights (including Shakespeare) wrote words for music. English has a longstanding ballad tradition that influenced not only the Romantic poets but 20th-century songwriters: "I’m weary wi' hunting, and fain wald lie down." Among those songwriters, i have no problem with the eminence accorded Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. I've mentioned Joanna Newsom as a more recent example. A lot of rock and pop lyrics, though, have a calculated vagueness that gains power both from the music and from its capacity to invite universal identification—variations on "I love you, baby" and "I miss you, baby." Which is fine and can be very effective when combined with the music, with the persona of the artist, and with visual elements like videos, etc. But they aren't words that can live by themselves on the page. (This probably isn't true to the same extent with rap and hip-hop, but that's mostly not my genre, so I will leave that to more competent commenters.) The artistic greatness of a David Bowie or a Lana Del Rey inheres not so much the literary merit of their lyrics but in the entire artwork that is their persona in all its elements and transformations.
Film is so total an art, and one to which the contributions of the director, the actors, the musicians, etc. are so important, that I find screenplays harder to enjoy on their own. A likely exception: if the screenwriter is particularly focused on providing rich verbal interest, like the authors of the early screwball comedies or, in our own time, Tarantino or Whit Stillman or Hal Hartley, or, in a very different way, Peter Handke. A great script qua conceptual and structural basis for a film—Tár would be a recent example—may still not be very much fun to read without the performance and the mise-en-scène, however. Plays are superficially similar to screenplays, but playwrights work in the knowledge that there will be many performances and versions (if they're lucky!) and even the possibility of their plays being studied in school, so they tend to give their scripts more freestanding integrity. Even some canonical playwrights, however, are probably better to watch than to read: Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller. I think this is what Joyce had in mind when he said Ibsen was a better dramatist than Shakespeare. He may have been—but was he a better poet?

Una mostra su Lee Miller a Stupinigi
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Claire Trevor and Edmund Lowe in Black Sheep (Allan Dwan, 1935)
Cast: Edmund Lowe, Claire Trevor, Tom Brown, Eugene Pallette, Adrienne Ames, Herbert Mundin, Ford Sterling, Jed Prouty, Billy Bevan, David Torrence. Screenplay: Allen Rivkin, Allan Dwan. Cinematography: Arthur C. Miller. Art direction: Duncan Cramer. Film editing: Alex Troffey. Music: Oscar Levant.
Is it because it stars Edmund Lowe and Claire Trevor, and not, say, William Powell and Carole Lombard, that I had never seen Black Sheep before? Because Lowe, a second-string leading man at best, is perfectly fine as the suave but penniless gambler trying to recoup his fortunes on a ship sailing back to the States. And Trevor is delightful as the similarly broke actress going home after failing to make it big on the stage in Europe. Trevor, in fact, is something of a revelation: She's now best known for playing hard-bitten dames like Dallas, who was run out of town by the respectable ladies and put onto the titular vehicle of Stagecoach (John Ford, 1939). And she won an Oscar as the gangster's moll Gaye Dawn in Key Largo (John Huston, 1948). Who knew she had the gift for comedy that she shows in Black Sheep? And it's mostly a comedy, with a melodramatic twist provided by Allan Dwan, who wrote the story for which Allen Rivkin provided some lively dialogue. Lowe's John Francis Dugan and Trevor's Janette Foster team up to save the naïve young Fred Curtis (Tom Brown) from being fleeced by the card sharps Belcher (Eugene Pallette) and Schmelling (Jed Prouty) and by the slinky Millicent Bath (Adrienne Ames). Young Curtis, from a proper Bostonian family, owes Mrs. Bath a large sum, which she uses to blackmail him into helping her smuggle into the States a valuable pearl necklace that she has stolen. It's the usual shipboard intrigue plot we've seen before, played for comedy. But Dwan gives it a turn toward melodrama when Dugan discovers that the young man he's protecting is his own son. (Dwan seems to have borrowed this device from his own movie, East Side, West Side (1927), which likewise involves a father being separated from his son by a snooty family.) But it's mostly a comedy with some sharp repartee and a gallery of supporting actors like Pallette and Prouty, Herbert Mundin as a man in top hat and tails who's so drunk he doesn't know where he is or even who he is, and Ford Sterling as Mather, the shipboard detective who's Dugan's nemesis. There's also a sappy song, "In Other Words, I'm in Love," with lyrics by Sidney Clare and music by Oscar Levant, sung sappily by Dick Webster, which doesn't bear mentioning except that Levant's Gershwinesque music also serves as the film's score.

THESE MUSES ARE LOOKING FOR THEIR MISSED CONNECTIONS:
SEBASTIAN RIVERA is looking for ART HISTORY STUDENTS. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP (any age is fine! these can be undergraduate or graduate students), but you must reach out to andante–andante to find out more!
NORAH RAJAN is looking for THEIR BEST FRIEND. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of JESSE RATH, MARTIN SENSMEIER, LUDI LIN, MANNY JACINTO, YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II, RAHUL KOHLI, SACHA DHAWAN, UTP (FCOC PREFERRED) AGED 33-37, but you must reach out to DADIISM to find out more! (wc and norah have been best friends since grade school. he’s always supported her and at some point moved in with her after high school (or college) to help her with the kids. he’s more of a father figure to them than their actual dad. if the chemistry is right, i’m all for a friends to lovers, it’s always been you sort of situation!)
ANGELO CORTES ESTRADA is looking for THEIR AA SPONSOR. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of STERLING K BROWN, AMY ACKER, MATT CZUCHRY, WENTWORTH MILLER, SARAH PAULSON, LANA PARRILLA, EDGAR RAMIREZ, DAVID HARBOUR, ANY FC 40+, but you must reach out to DADIISM to find out more! (as part of his parole, angelo attends aa meets. he isn’t very good at attending them and isn’t really taking it too seriously (he’s still drinking) but this person would have confidence in him and support him, probably calling/texting to check up on him when he misses meetings, etc)
DIEGO ROBINSON-ARMSTRONG is looking for THEIR BEST FRIEND. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP 48+ (suggestions include Tracie Thoms, Michael Greyeyes, Daniel Wu, Gina Torres, Gabrielle Union, Byron Mann) but you must reach out to OFWISHFULTHINKING to find out more! (+ this connection is quite fluid. I just imagine supportive best friends. This is probably the one person who knows the extent of Diego’s recent business dealings – something that not even his husband knows. I imagine that they give him a lot of advice, and the two spend a lot of time together. They’ve probably known one another for years (they could’ve even met working at the hotel together in their 20s) and have remained close throughout the years. All in all, they’re each other’s person and know all of the other’s deepest darkest secrets!)
MALACHI DUBOIS is looking for THEIR MILITARY BUDS. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP, but you must reach out to OFWISHFULTHINKING to find out more! (+ Mal’s been out of the military for nearly two decades now due to a medical discharge (info in his intro post), but he still attends groups at the VA and keeps up with his military buds. Once a month, they all get together to have some drinks and shoot some pool. I’m imagining some casual friendships. I’d also like if one of them was more of a close friend – maybe they work out together every day – someone Mal can confide in, who uniquely understands his circumstances and helps him with managing his PTSD!)
SEBASTIAN RIVERA is looking for A CONFIDANT/CLOSE FRIEND. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP around late 30s or older, but you must reach out to andante–andante to find out more!
MAIA KELLY is looking for CREW MEMBERS. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP, but you must reach out to FADEDSTARSFMS to find out more! ( Maia has been double crossed by latest crew, utp if they were a part of that or if they parted ways before that!) taken by landon dunn
EDGAR YANG is looking for THEIR CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP 35+ (suggestions include Kendrick Sampson, Andrew Koji, Alexander Dreymon, Francois Arnaud, Dichen Lachman, Kristen Kreuk, Martin Sensmeier) but you must reach out to OFWISHFULTHINKING to find out more! (+ Edgar was born and raised in France. His family is well known as they’ve owned multiple wineries for generations. This person could either be someone whose family was in the same social circles, or even the child of someone who worked for the family. Either way, this was someone Edgar considered one of his best friends growing up. They likely lost contact when Edgar moved away after his 18th birthday, but are no reconnecting. What brings them to Denver is completely UTP!)
CARLEIGHA ORTIZ is looking for RIVAL. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of UTP preferably FCOC, but you must reach out to xallmywolvesx to find out more! (+ 32+ years old, the pair would have met in the children’s hospital ward way back when (16+ years ago) and have been adversarial ever since. The original cause is up for plotting or they just annoyed each other from the start and have continued to actively push each other’s buttons since!)
ESME LOOMIS is looking for THEIR CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of DEV PATEL, KIOWA GORDON, HARVEY GUILLEN, JAY HAYDEN, ANDREW KOJI, ANY FC 33-38ISH, but you must reach out to DADIISM to find out more! ( honestly most of the character can be your creation/utp! esme was definitely “one of the guys”/a tomboy growing up, so wc would’ve been her best friend. wc should either be from denver or have moved there at some point during school aged years (before the age of 18). they’ve been close ever since they met and wc would be like an uncle to esme’s ten year old daughter, alicia.

OCPL's 'People's University' to Explore Ancient History
Tumblr media
Thurs., Jan. 5 at 7 PM:  Explore Ancient History with People's University! The new People's University series being offered at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Thursday evenings beginning January 5 will explore the ancient world, including Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The eight classes begin at 7 pm in the Library's auditorium through February 23. The classes will also be livestreamed on the Library's People's University Facebook  and People's University YouTube channels. The primary instructor, Dr. Laura Michele Diener has taught ancient and medieval history at Marshall University since 2008, where she has won several awards for teaching. She received her PhD in history from The Ohio State University and has studied at Vassar College, Newnham College, Cambridge, and most recently, Vermont College of Fine Arts. She enjoys teaching classes on fascinating peoples of the past, including Vikings, Romans, Ancient Egyptians, and Celts. She runs the History Club at Marshall and enjoys organizing the yearly Viking Feast and Yuletide Celebration. If you google her, you will find some of her creative essays online. She has written about medieval spirituality, medieval embroidery, and medieval hair. She is currently writing a biography of the Norwegian Nobel-prize-winning writer, Sigrid Undset titled A World Perilous and Beautiful. Fresh off a European lecture tour, Dr. Marie N. Pareja (her students call her Doc) will teach two of the classes. She is a Bronze Age Aegean archaeologist and art historian who focuses on iconography, exchange, and identity in prehistoric Afro-Eurasia. She currently works as an Assistant Professor of Classical Archaeology and Religious Studies at Marshall University and as a Consulting Scholar for the University of Pennsylvania. Some of her most recent work has been featured in Smithsonian magazine, and her up-and-coming projects on the interconnectivity in the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods were hosted by the University of Oxford in early December 2022. She is thrilled to be part of People’s University. The full People's University Ancient History Schedule: Class 1: Thursday, Jan. 5 — 7PM: Egypt Part 1 - Gods and Pyramids Egypt was a superpower in the Near East for over 3000 years.  By the time Cleopatra came to the throne, the pyramids were thousands of years old, and she would have considered their builders to have been “ancient,” much as we do. In this class, we will study the glory days of truly ancient Egypt, covering the emergence of royal power, exalted gods, and military might. And we will spend time considering the tale of the once lost Egyptian hieroglyphs and how they came to reveal their secrets to the modern world. Instructor: Dr. Laura Michele Diener WATCH LIVE ON YOUTUBE WATCH LIVE ON FACEBOOK FACEBOOK EVENT| LIBRARY CALENDAR Recommended Reading for the series: - Aegean Bronze Age Art: Meaning in the Making by Karl Knappett - Antony and Cleopatra by Adrian Goldsworthy - Creators, Conquerors, and Citizens by Robin Waterfield - A History of Ancient Greece in 50 Lives by David Stuttard - The Odyssey by Homer, Emily Wilson's Translation - Phillip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors by Adrian Goldsworthy - Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt by Barbara Mertz - SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard - When Women Ruled the World by Kara CooneyNovels: - Ariadne by Jennifer Saint - Circe by Madeline Miller - Mythos by Stephen FryNote: Search the OCPL's Catlog HERE.The Library is in the process of acquiring as many of the above titles as possible. If you see a book above in our catalog that you'd like to check out that's on hold, please send us an email. Class 2: Thursday, Jan. 12 — 7PM: Egypt Part 2 - The Pharaohs We have no doubt you have heard of Cleopatra, but what about Hatshepsut, the first Egyptian woman to rule in her own right, and the one who created the word, pharaoh? Or Rameses III, who was brutally assassinated by the denizens of his own harem? In this class, we will cover some of the most colorful of the New Kingdom rulers, examining their private lives, their public personas, and their legacy in tombs and temples. Instructor:  Dr. Laura Michele Diener Class 3: Thursday, Jan. 19—  7PM: Greece Part 1 - Minoan, Mycenean, & Homeric  The Bronze Age lasts for approximately 2,000 years – 3,000-1170 BCE. During this period, we see a shift from the settled and (some still maintain) isolated cultures from Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and the broader Mediterranean, to a highly-integrated, multicultural, globalized system. In this class, we will focus primarily on the Bronze Age Aegean and what we see in the iconographic and archaeological record, including the most famous sites and artworks from each region and period. We will cover Early Cycladic hilltop structures and the many fakes and forgeries of Cycladic Folded Arm Figurines that can be seen in museums around the world (and you’ll learn how to spot the authentic ones!); the site of Knossos on Crete, and some of its most important wall paintings and artifacts; The site of Akrotiri, on the island of Santorini, which survived by virtue of a cataclysmic volcanic eruption; and Mycenae, the great settlement from which the legendary Agamemnon and Menelaos sailed to Troy in Homer’s Iliad. Instructor:   Dr. Marie N. Pareja  FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Class 4: Thursday, Jan. 26 — 7PM: Greece Part 2-Archaic & Classical    With the collapse of the Bronze Age Aegean cultures in ca. 1170, Greece rested for a few hundred years in a relative dark age, neglecting and then forgetting the masterful heights of technological and artistic culture of the Middle and Late Bronze Ages. They began the slow slog back to prominence, which we will trace through the art historical record, primarily through human statuary with a few forays into some architecture and even myth. It is through this lens that we will trace the rise of Greek culture from the Geometric and Archaic Periods, through the Classical period and up to the rule of Alexander the Great, in the Hellenistic period. Be ready for conversation, as most of us have at least a passing familiarity with Classical Greek culture – even if it’s reading Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels (or any of the others)! This is going to be a fun exploration of our collective pasts, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Instructor:  Dr. Marie N. Pareja Class 5: Thursday, Feb. 2 — 7PM: Greece Part 3 - Alexander the Great & the Hellenistic Egypt   The history of Egypt changed during the fourth century BC, when the unstoppable Alexander the Great conquered the Near East and the Middle East from Greece to India, defeating the Persian Empire and uniting the most unlikely of kingdoms under his rule and those of his successors..  Although Alexander’s victory in Egypt ended its 3000-year supremacy, it also ushered in a new period of international involvement, foreign gods, city-building, and the Greek-speaking Ptolemaic dynasty. The Ptolemies, named for one Alexander’s generals, were some of the most murderous, bloodthirsty, and back-stabbing rulers of the ancient world, of which the great Cleopatra (actually the seventh Queen Cleopatra) was the last and the most famous. Instructor: Dr. Laura Michele Diener Class 6: Thursday, Feb. 9 — 7PM: Rome Part 1-The Period of the Kings through the Republic The Romans believed they were descended from a long line of gods and heroes. Their oldest stories celebrated the demise of tyrants, the value of shared power, and respect for family. We will consider how these founding myths helped shape their identity as they rose from a small collective of farmer-warriors to a massive empire within the space of about two hundred years. Instructor: Dr. Laura Michele Diener Class 7: Thursday, Feb. 16 — 7PM: Rome Part 2-Rise & Fall of Empire By the time of Julius Caesar was murdered during the Ides of March, the Romans had been living through almost a century of civil wars marked by massacres, betrayal, and upheaval. During the first century BC, the Republic had begun to break down under the pressures of expansion and ambition. In this class, we will cover the cataclysmic end of the Republic and the formation of imperial rule under Emperor Augustus and his successors. Despite its blood-soaked beginnings, the Empire ushered in a golden age of Roman peace and prosperity known as the Pax Romana. Instructor: Dr. Laura Michele Diener Class 8: Thursday, Feb. 23 — 7PM: The Tragedy of Pompeii Before Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving, dynamic, and international city whose story intertwined with the key events of Roman history. In this course, we will consider the complex past of Pompeii before and after its cataclysmic destruction. Using unique archeological sources from graffiti to sewage, we will explore the very real people who lived, loved, and died in the most well-preserved of ancient cities. Instructor:  Dr. Laura Michele Diener In 1951, the Ohio County Public Library's head librarian, Virginia Ebeling, referenced British historian Thomas Carlyle, who said, “the public library is a People’s University,” when she initiated a new adult education program with that name. Miss Ebeling charged the Library with the responsibility of reaching “as many people in the community as possible.” In keeping with that tradition of public libraries as sanctuaries of free learning for all people, the Ohio County Public Library revived the series in 2010. The People’s University is a free program for adults who wish to continue their education in the liberal arts. It features courses—taught by experts in each subject—that enable patrons to pursue their goal of lifelong learning in classic subjects such as history, philosophy, and literature. Patrons may attend as many classes as they wish. There are no tests of other requirements and all programs are free and open to the public. For more information about the People's University Ancient History or other Library programs, call 304-232-0244 or stop by the Reference Desk. Read the full article
