Picked up a nice etching by American, WPA artist Raphael Soyer (1933-1989) at a garage sale this morning.

Sorry for the poor photograph, it is under glass.

“Protected” was created in an edition of 250 in 1938.

It is in the collection of most major museums including the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Once dubbed the “East Side Degas,” Russian-Jewish émigré and social-realist painter Raphael Soyer depicted ordinary men and women in contemporary settings. While studying at the Art Students League of New York under Guy Pène du Bois, he was influenced by the Ashcan School’s faithful representations of daily life in New York City’s poorer corners. Soyer rejected abstract art, stating, “I choose to be a realist and a humanist in art.” In sympathetic renderings of the unemployed during and after the great economic crash of 1929, many of Soyer’s paintings came to embody the Depression, as in the drawn, weary face and soft eyes that gaze out of Portrait of Walter Broe (1932). Soyer also painted women in large numbers and various forms throughout his career, including nudes, shop-girls, prostitutes, and pedestrians, displaying a love for and fascination with the manifold faces of humanity. Moses and Raphael Soyer were identical twin brothers. Born in Russia, they immigrated with their family to America in 1913. They both studied art in New York, and went on to become successful figurative painters. During the 1930s, the brothers became involved with the Works Progress Administration and worked together on several large projects, including a mural for the Kingsessing Station Post Office in Philadelphia. Both Raphael and Moses were influenced by the Depression and painted many realistic scenes that expressed their concern for America’s poor and unemployed citizens. SMITHSONIAN

   The first half of this week at the Strand [theater] they are showing the pictures taken by the Byrd Expedition into the Antarctica. Today is the last day. They should be very interesting, so I think I shall go down at noon to see them. I wish they would have continues them until Saturday night.

This doesn’t say what year, and there were three different “Byrd Expeditions”, but it’s almost certainly in the 1930s. My grandfather Lester (1891 - 1955) and my grandmother Dorothy (1901 - 1969) married in the early thirties but lived apart for nearly a decade. They didn’t live in the same house until around 1940, and had my mother in 1941 - when he was 50 and she was 40!

Part 2

I'm not quite sure how to start a story that has pledged my family for 3 generations, so forgive me if I seem to bounce all over the place. My part of this story begins when I was 4-5 years old. I am taken care of by my grandparents,  they live in a cute, modest home in California. This home has a beautiful pool, this pool becomes my sanctuary. To this day, I am still drawn to water. This pool is where my abilities started. I remember a man who would always visit me when I was swimming. The first time I saw him I was roughly 4 or 5. I was swimming underwater and saw legs and feet dangling in the pool like someone was sitting at the edge with their feet in the water. For some reason, this person still had their shoes on. Shiny black shoes, the kind people wear when they're getting dressed up. I don't remember talking with him that day, but I saw those shoes often.

Recipe Advent Calendar - Day 2

Happy Holidays!

To celebrate the season, I am doing 12-days of seasonal recipes from the 14th to the 25th December. These are recipes published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper during the period that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes lived in Brooklyn in the early 20th century.

Lemon Cream Cookies

1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup sour cream 2 eggs yolks, beaten slightly 2 cups find dry Bond crumbs 1/2 teaspoon soda Grated rind of 1/2 lemon Cream butter and sugar add sour cream and egg yolks and blend. Combine crumbs, soda and lemon rind and add to first mixture. Drop from teaspoon onto buttered baking sheet. Decorate the top of each with sugar and cinnamon mixed together, silver balls or tiny stars cur from candied cherries. Bake in a hot oven, 400 degrees F., until brown—about 10 minutes.

The recipe appeared in the Friday 11 December 1936 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
