Day 4 - Sloth and Diligence
Mairon is a good, diligent, hard-working Maia
Words: 100
Warnings: Melkor's couch is a bit weird
Tumblr media
Stretched out on the laughably luxurious divan of living flesh, Melkor radiated in all his inconceivable glory and might.
At his feet, reports from scouts and outposts floated in congealing pools of blood.
"My precious darling," Mairon sighed, plucking the distasteful missives from their sticky prison one by one. "Gothmog awaits your pleasure; he claims that his account is of considerable urgency."
Wondrously gleaming eyes alighted on his stern face, making it soften into an indulgent smile.
"I'll take care of it," Mairon heard himself say as if compelled, if not by his sense of duty, then by his love.

So, then, my brothers, let us sing now, not in order to enjoy a life of leisure, but in order to lighten our labors. You should sing as wayfarers do — sing, but continue your journey. Do not be lazy, but sing to make your journey more enjoyable. Sing, but keep on going. What do I mean by keep going? Keep on making progress. [...] If you make progress, you will be continuing your journey, but be sure your progress is in virtue, true faith, and right living. Sing then, but keep going!
Saint Augustine of Hippo (Sermon 256.3)
Qui cantat, bis orat To sing is to pray twice

An Exhortation to Obedience
Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; — Deuteronomy 4:9 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version BIble is in the public domain. Cross References: Genesis 18:19; Exodus 10:2; Exodus 23:13; Deuteronomy 4:10; Deuteronomy 4:23; Deuteronomy 6:2; Ephesians 6:4

Intelligence without diligence is impotent… Diligence without intelligence is blind… One is not enough, both have to be together, only then is your life enriched... So be intelligently diligent… Act, but act through awareness. Do a thousand and one things in life but don’t be controlled by unconscious instincts... Then slowly, slowly, life becomes such a divine experience… It is delicious! But one has to learn the art of tasting it. And all other arts are small compared to the art of living… These two things have to be remembered: Be intelligent and be diligent… They very rarely happen together...

No Work, No Food
Hyakujo, the Chinese Zen master, used to labor with his pupils even at the age of eighty, trimming the gardens, cleaning the grounds, and pruning the trees.
The pupils felt sorry to see the old teacher working so hard, but they knew he would not listen to their advice to stop, so they hid away his tools.
That day the master did not eat. The next day he did not eat, nor the next. "He may be angry because we have hidden his tools," the pupils surmised. "We had better put them back."
The day they did, the teacher worked and ate the same as before. In the evening he instructed them: "No work, no food."

Hard Work and Diligence
Hard work and diligence are necessary for one's well-being and sustenance.
There’s effort and time put into preparing a meal.
Just as no work leads to no food, in cooking, putting in the effort to gather ingredients, cook them with care and attention, and present them thoughtfully can result in a satisfying and nourishing meal.
The energy and effort put into something often correlated with the rewards received.

There are certain graces which we ought to pray for often — not to be lost forever; to persevere in religion; not to fall into mortal sin. And these are commonly given to frequent and earnest prayer.
George Porter, S.J., future Archbishop of Bombay, in an undated letter addressed to a Sister of Mercy in from late 1860s.
