#dislike 3D artists

Sometimes I wonder if 2D artists, and I mean the OG’s who’ve been in the industry for awhile, heavily dislike upcoming 3D artist. Cause, let’s be real, 3D and now AI is dominating the industry. The thing is, the art form and technology is evolving and thus we have to with it. It’s only a matter of time when the tools you use now won’t be useful in the near future.
“But the new art/movies are looking boring/too perfect and I dislike 3D” that’s why I think we should learn these tools and use them in a revolutionary way. That’s why I think “Into the Spiderverse” was so successful for example.

GUNNNNNNNNN, a Scifi heavier pistol for a Roblox (Gamemode?) I've been hired to do most of the art for. Probably will reuse in other stuff later, maybe add some decals and stuff. It's meant to be a railgun that has some questionable design choices such as yeeting the entire bullet for reasons and being a "Smart" gun that keeps track of how much ammo it has promptly yeeting the magazine out the bottom the second it's empty (Steel toe boots advised).

Thoughts on Palworld
Leave it to the internet to miss the entire point of people disliking Palworld. It's not because they are taking money from Pokémon. It not because they think Pokémon but with guns is stupid. IT'S ABOUT ARTISTIC INTEGRITY AND ORIGINALITY! Some of the Pals are just blatant rip-off's/fusions of existing Pokémon. If people try to steal Pokémon's designs and actually sell that as a commercial product that may give the impression that it's ok to steal others art and encourage it! If all of the Pals they made were original I would love to play it!
P.S
Apparently the accusations of them ripping Pokémon models was false. (Sorry about that) But they did basically do the 3D modeling version of tracing which is still bad. Also I've watched more videos on this game and it is very POSSIBLE they have stolen fan Fakemon designs and changed them up a little which is still shitty of them.
Again I will reiterate I would love this game and it's success if it wasn't so creatively bankrupt and plagiarized.
Here are some alternative Pokémon-esce games to play!
Cassette Beasts - Try to find you way out of this land and transform into and fuse Beasts!
TemTem - Very cute art style and can play online with other people! Also has a Nuzlocke/Randomlocke Mode.
Ooblets - Have card dance battles with other Ooblets and have them help you on your farm. You can also run your own shop!
Coromon - You're a newly minted Battle Researcher and your job gets attacked on your first day of work! Track down the invaders and discover the rising threat around Velua! Has different difficultly modes and customization.
Monster Sanctuary - A Monster Taming Metroidvania Sidescroller
Here are some Pokémon fan games to try!
Reborn - Has decent difficulty/One of the most difficult fan games I've come across. Has new Pokémon Forms
Uranium - Original Region and Pokémon
Insurgence - Has an option for a slightly darker twist on the traditional Pokémon story. Has new Pokémon/Forms
Xenoverse - Haven't play or watched it but looks very promising. Originally in Spanish but has a English translation as well.
Phoenix Rising - Still in development and only has one episode. Has new Pokémon Forms and amazing art and visuals
Red Adventures - From what I've seen it seems to be a game version of The Pokémon Adventures Manga
Castaway - Your plane crashes and you are left to discover the secrets of a mysterious island.
Mewyou - A game where you play as Mew!
Axis - You are teleported from our world to the Pokémon world/You're still human
Ethereal Gates - Still only a Demo at the moment/Unsure if they are still making it
I will add more to this list if asked!

The topic of Palworld is pretty charged, but often times I see people be shamed for liking it because the CEO tweeted stuff about NFTs and the company using AI art in a separate game. Acting as if that's the most damning thing ever for a gaming company in an industry filled with similar people.
Make no mistake, I dislike both AI art and nfts, but do you realize how many gaming companies have involvement with that?
To begin with, Pokémon used AI art in a promotional piece for Pokémon Go in September, and nobody gave a shit because uwu Pikachu. The Pokémon Company also put a job listing some months back seeking an expert in NFTs. That's not quite damning evidence, but if I were a betting man, no "NFT expert" will willingly say "yeah nfts suck are bad for the environment, man, I'll take my paycheck and fuck off now." There's also a strong argument to be made that Pokémon has stolen ideas from fakemon artists (Finizen and Palafin, Scovillain, Dipplin, etc) and other franchises (kaiju movies, Dragon Quest, Megaman, final fantasy, western cartoons and food mascots, etc), a dubious legal statement that claims they own all fan art from the remixes and fakemon made on youtube to the pikachu your kid drew at breakfast; they have yet to apologize for the state of Scarlet and Violet while charging full price to millions of paying customers for a clearly unfinished and barely functioning game (which i did enjoy, but you can't tell me it was finished baking when it struggles not to shit itself just to run), and a bunch of other things people shit on Palworld for, but A. It's Pokémon so people don't care and think it's fine, and B. That's not the point of this post.
You know who else does NFTs and AI art? (Yes I heard Muscle Man from Regular Show in my head just now, too, moving along)
Square Enix sold several of their IPs for NFTs and claims to have used AI art "a minimum amount" in Foam Stars, yet I see nobody yelling for boycotts of Final Fantasy 14, 16, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Life is Strange, etc etc etc.
Sony has invested in both, they want to implement AI into gaming, and has a patent for nfts to be used in games and consoles, yet there's no movement to throw out your playstations.
Bandai Namco- you know, that company with a hand in pretty much most anime games on the market and popular games such as the Dark Souls games? They have a game called RYU that's essentially a virtual pet game that uses the blockchain, and its AI driven, among other projects. Yet there's no outcry to stop playing the many, MANY games they brand with. This also includes quite a few Nintendo games (btw they just partnered together to form a special studio quite recently) like Smash Wii U/3ds and New Pokémon Snap. Nobody gives a shit though.
Android, Microsoft, Google, Apple- I don't even need to explain those, they have whole teams dedicated to both. Even popular VPN companies accept crypto.
I'm just saying an awful lot of you guys that scream and shit bloody murder about Palworld's company being involved with that shit are either the biggest "It's okay when my favs do it" type of hypocrites, or you're sorely ignorant to just how evil and greedy most corporations are. You'll be hard pressed to find a game company with popular AND fun games that DOESN'T have some interest in either, let alone movie and show studios. That's the awful reality we live in.
You have 2 options
1. You basically stop doing anything involving most modern tech, including throwing out your pc and smart phone. You could probably live a comfortable life with tech circa 2010, but you have to be aware that any thing you buy may go towards a cause you don't like.
2. You accept that people can enjoy a product while not necessarily agreeing with the CEO of said product. Most CEOs tend to be jackasses anyway, that's kind of the shared trait they all have. You can also discourage companies from using them while understanding it is everywhere.
Palworld at the end of the day is just a toy, that's it. From the looks of it, it's not even actually hurting anyone, and it seems like the company at least treats their employees pretty decently- at least according to a few things I've seen here and there that seems rather progressive for a Japanese studio (with room for doubt obviously, it's a company after all and as we've established, they're all evil). At the least its not like when people supported Hogwarts Legacy and directly put money into JKR's wallet so she can openly hurt more Trans women. In fact, the only people seemingly hurt in all of this Palworld drama are obsessed Pokémon stans that can't accept a parody, or the Pokémon Company themselves, who rightly deserve some punching up tbh.
You can just say you dislike the game, that's fine, I totally get that. Even though I personally think The Pokémon Company deserves a few nut shots after the way they've treated fans these last few years with the state of their games (and you know, stealing ideas from fans without credit), I can see why someone would be turned away from a parody that's literally meant to be Pokémon with guns. I can totally understand all of that, personally I'd prefer if the game was MORE like Pokémon with turn based combat.
But if you're going to defend Pokémon because you think its perfectly innocent because of Wooloo or something like that, just be sure you're aware you're defending the World's Richest Franchise and their own attempts at AI and NFTs while calling out an indie company (a real one thats learning as they go, not the fake "We're totally indie" franchise that hasn't been indie since gen 3) for having a ceo that also seems interested in the same stuff. And remember, you don't become number 1 without hurting people somehow (we could dig up receipts about certain partners Pokémon has teamed up with, such as Tencent with Unite, but I'd rather not right now.)
Just saying. I don't think you're an irredeemable person for still liking Pikachu, cuz I do too believe it or not. I've been a life long fan and still have fun with the games despite the clear scummy business practices towards their paying customers. Just maybe extend that courtesy to the millions of players just trying to have fun in this awful, putrid, shithole planet that just keeps getting worse and worse with each passing day.
Plus... you know, think about it. Do you think Pokémon would ever get around to making a gunless Palworld? Probably not. Do you think Palworld would exist if The Pokémon Company and Nintendo were the slightest bit chill about Pokémon fan projects like SEGA is with Sonic? Also probably not. From what I've read, the devs just wanted to make a fun game that happens to mostly be ARK with Pokémon adjacent monsters. That's not really a bad thing, all things considered, and it seems like the worst they've done is reference official Pokémon when making their own models.
Palworld being successful is actually beneficial to Pokémon fans, as well. It'll never really truly compete, but it has outsold Legends Arceus in terms of units sold (not as much financially because Palworld was only $30 plus a sale recently, but still impressive), and it is enough that Game Freak is aware of its existence. Let Palworld light a fire under their ass, and maybe GF will actually finish their next game before releasing it for full price (and no, we're not bringing up the tired imaginary ball and chain game devs, game freak owns 1/3rd lf the franchise and can easily take methods to get more dev time, they just haven't because money). Just saying, at least the Paldevs were honest enough to sell it in early access for half the price.

Hey your art is pretty whimsical and radical my gender non specific broseph, per chance would thou be able to enlighten us on how you draw such bodacious fine art? Like how you draw bodies and fave and what have thee. (Fr tho your art really cool and I'd like to see how you make it)
okay i have whipped up a quick little visual of my thought process while drawing!! it might not be the best cause im not the greatest at teaching but if anyones curious ^_^
first lets start with how i draw bodies
Tumblr media
a lot of people like to do the "skeleton" method which is where you draw lines and circles to plan out where the limbs should be. honestly i really dislike doing that because i like to always have volume and shape in mind when drawing bodies, but if it works for you thats great.
instead i separate the body into different pieces, kinda like an articulated doll. i think it helps visualize all the moving parts in a 3d space and makes posing and perspective a lot easier. i can also always add the detailed anatomy on top of this basic model like you see on the left. its always important to work from simple -> complex. drawing a pose while being too worried on anatomy will really hinder your drawing process.
to improve doing this it really just takes practice and observation. i could be here all day talking about proportions, and how many heads high a person is, and each specific muscle group, but i reccomend you go and watch videos and study professional artists on your own. as someone who has been drawing and studying these things for so long, i barely think about how many heads high a person is when im drawing a body. its kind of like learning how to play and instrument or driving a car. it becomes second nature eventually, but you have to apply those skills and work through that period of time where youre still trying to program it into your brain.
Tumblr media
after you get a hang of the basics you can take this basic model and draw all types of body shapes with it. i say its always important to play around with making your body types diverse. its not only fun to do but helps make all the characters you draw unique and recognizable. (dont be like vivziepop).
Tumblr media
dynamic posing can be the hardest thing to master for a lot of people. the best way to learn how to pose is to not think about it too much and just doing it. for example in my figure drawing class we had to sketch out gesture drawings from a picture in 15 seconds. excercises like that help a ton in making you feel more comfortable when drawing from a reference. you should definitely reference a LOT when it comes to poses, it helps build this visual database so that eventually you can get to the point where you can just draw accurate and dynamic poses from memory. after getting to this point eventually you kind of start thinking of your canvas as this tangible 3d space and considering your characters in 3d space helps make the poses feel a lot more realistic and interesting.
ok now a quick little tour into how i draw different faces yaaaayy!!!1!1!1
Tumblr media
main thing with my art is that i LOVEEE drawing dynamic face shapes i think its so important to avoid drawing the same slim faces over and over. shape language plays a big role into this. like for example the face on the middle is more square, the one on the left is more oval and the one on the right is more circle. shape language helps communicate so much about your character without even saying a word about them and just helps differentiate people from a glance.
Tumblr media
facial features also play a huge role into making your faces different. these are all drawn from the same exact face shape but look like entirely different characters by adding variety in the features. different noses, eye shapes, lips, etc. can make such a huge difference
i think before any of that its important to learn the anatomy of the face though. again im not gonna go into how many eyes wide a face it or how far the nose is from the mouth but like its always important to learn the fundamentals before stylizing stuff. again the face is a 3d space and if you dont consider your face a 3d plane the features will kind of just look like theyre floating on your characters face like soup...theres a lot of great resources and tutorials online take advantage of those!!! and reference from artists you like too it helps a ton.
Tumblr media
and then you mix that all together and Boom you have cool and interesting faces. you will best that same face syndrome in no time if you take my advice Trust...
anyways yeah thats the soda design philosophy hit that like button if you liked it or douse me with tomatoes and kick me off the stage if you think i give bad advice ill leave the decision up to you

Maybe it is not because of cgi movies but because how bad written the characters especially the villains. So far the only villain I can think fits is Mother Gothel because of how well-written her character is despite lacking of powers and a twisted version of her helps. Although they did take inspiration from CGI movies like Big Hero 6 for that chapter 6 plot and even took some TV shows like Lion Guard which it revealed to have lion guards in Leona's hometown.

As I mentioned in the original post, yes; TWST does take inspiration from and make reference to many Disney properties regardless of artistic medium. This extends to their animated and live action films and shows, as well as musical productions (the whole plot line with Rollo having a little brother that was led astray by sin comes from an obscure Hunchback of Notre Dame German musical) and more. It’s just that TWST has yet to introduce characters in their own universe explicitly twisted from characters in the 3D era, whether villains or not.
Seeing as the big “sell” of Twisted Wonderland is its villain-based characters, I can see why one might think poor quality of the original (3D) Disney characters would be a factor in preventing them from being successfully adapted. However, I personally don’t think this is a huge consideration since that would imply Disney’s old villains are all written significantly well when some are simply generically evil or not that interesting (though this will vary depending on who you ask). Besides, it would also discount the fact that no matter how low quality or boring the original villain was, they can always be “dressed up” and given a more interesting story and character by the TWST team; they are not 100% beholden to the mold the original Disney character set.
I definitely agree that many of the more recent villains aren’t the… strongest… (if we had a villain at all, that is). Mother Gothel is the only one that immediately sticks out in my mind as a great villain from the 3D era. (She’s so uniquely wicked in how she gaslights and manipulates Rapunzel.) However, we don’t know if the people on the TWST team also hold this same opinion of disliking the 3D era and letting that actively influence their design direction for the game. It’s very hard to discern what the overall sentiment is since we don’t often hear from the TWST devs and just make assumptions of what the popular opinion is based on what we hear from our own social circles.
With the deliberate 3-4 years of staying with 2D animated characters (+ the G7 being some of the most iconic Disney villains) and now the Platinum Suit line now making references to the classics, I really think nostalgia is the main motivator rather than TWST (or Disney) questioning the quality of their 3D stories and characters. If anything, they (Disney, that is) seem pretty eager to stroke their own egos about mega box office and merchandising hits 😂 Frozen, anyone?

The Culture of Pop Music
Just like any other culture it has a history. It has people who belong to and appreciate it and it has people that don't.
Jungkook has clearly stated his wish to be part of it.
Tumblr media
There’s been a massive resurgence of early 2000s trends including fashion and music trends. We can see music of 2023 sampling, covering, being influenced by and paying homage to that era in their sounds and visuals.
Tumblr media
Jung Kook - 3D feat. Jack Harlow
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Example of pop/r&b of the early 2000s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Victoria Monet - On My Mama MV & Jung Kook - 3D MV
There *IS* a conversation that has been going on for as long as I can remember AND before, as to pop music and it’s relationship with black culture. That’s not a topic that will be covered here. However it’s worth noting that Pop music, being so heavily influenced by black culture, leads to sensitivities when highlighting the things liked or disliked about pop music, it’s lyrics, visuals, sounds etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Victoria Monet MV & Jung Kook - Seven Performance MV
A lot of dance moves in pop music videos, seen as provocative by some audiences are praised and not seen as anything more than an extension of the music. The artists are praised for their sensual movements to the beat, reminiscent of how the listener may dance to the same song with their friends or partners at the club, in their car, at a house party, places you’d expect to enjoy pop music. The dancing mostly isn’t taken for more than what it, an addition to the visuals. Pop music videos are rarely seen as a reflection of the artists real life interactions, most viewers don’t expect the artists to dance off a car, on a metal fence or on a crane in real life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Example of pop/r&b visuals & lyrics (Normani - Motivation)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jungkook's pop/r&b visuals & lyrics (Jung Kook - Seven feat. Latto)
Music can be playful, music can be fun, music doesn’t have to be serious, filled with soul searching, heartbreak, lyrical genius, layered production or activist messages.
Tumblr media
Pop music in particular is meant to be catchy, it’s meant to be easy listening. Not always require of depth and analysis. With pop music especially, sometimes it is what it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Justin Bieber - Sorry MV Jungkook - Seven
Billboard Hot 100 Number 1 song, with the video choreographed by The Lab's Sienna Lalau, who also featured in the video. Sienna and The Lab are also known to have worked with BTS and performed with j-hope at Coachella.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Globally recognised Pop Star Justin Bieber with R&B artists Daniel Caesar & Giveon with their Billboard Hot 100 Number 1 song, Peaches
This is the genre that JK has based his solo debut on so far. These are a few examples of his peers within that genre. Not BTS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Critically acclaimed Singer & Songwriter Victoria Monet, known for writing for some of the biggest pop stars including Ariana Grande. MV visuals with male and female dancers, chores, skin on display. Singing about confidence, sex and the addition of strong language to her lyrics.
Pop music of different decades has always had those that didn't subscribe to it and had lovers of it, it was seen with The Beatles, it was seen with Elvis, it was seen with Madonna. They all had the terms ‘scandalous’, ‘not suitable for kids’, ‘too provocative’, ‘basic’ etc attached to them at some point in their career.
Opposers of pop music have been heard time and time again over the years to praise their favoured genre for having more depth, more quality, more artistry etc whilst seeing pop music as lesser, as commercial and lacking artistic integrity.
Michael Jackson had major push back when shedding his child star image from his group with his brothers to become a soloist, yet today he is one on the biggest icons of music history, pop music, as are all the aformentioned artists.
In every period there were people for and people against.
This post is not about the harmful tropes within pop music, the objectifying visuals, the problematic lyrics etc. There are many issues with pop music, just like there are issues with rock music with parent and religious groups, divisive issues with country music, appropriation issue with the aforementioned and with Jazz music. Each genre has its issues. Each genre have people who love it or hate it.
This is just about the fact that pop culture exists, it has always existed, it's a culture that is important to a lot of people, it is understood and appreciated by a lot of people. It has always had people also against it, it has always had people trying to hold it accountable and people who do not enjoy it.
This is the culture, its always been here and most likely always will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You don't have to like it, you don't have to love it, but there are those that do and that doesn't make one wrong and one right, it doesn't make one superior nor on inferior.
It’s the genre at present that JK wants to be apart of, that he wants to fit in with and he’s doing so well when looked at along side those successful and praised in that genre.
Tumblr media
Comparing Jungkook to his old solo or group music and old style or comparing Jungkook to his members recent solo works does a huge disservice to him and to the other members. They've specifically stated that they wanted to show their individual colours separate to the group's.
By Jungkook's own admission he wants to be a global pop star, instead of looking to compare, either him to himself or him to others, when you look at the examples of popstars of today and of the early 2000s, Jungkook has achieved that and is continuing in that path. His solo rollout fits in with his pop peers.
Tumblr media
It's a culture, its always been here and most likely always will.

"Standing next to you"..
and other thoughts
Now that Jungkook's album is finally here, I can confidently predict that "Standing next to you" is going to be a massive massive success, a true global GP hit. It is exactly what I longed to hear from JK ever since he started his solo career. While "Seven" and "3D" had some good things going for them, this is a song fit for the main vocal of the biggest group on the planet. It's a grande song, full of character, it sounds simultaneously retro and well-known, yet still fresh and new. Best of all, it showcases JK's abilities perfectly as a singer, making his voice the star with plenty of room to shine and captivate. In fact, the whole vibe of the release, from the stunningly cinematographic MV to the impeccable styling, and, of course, the jazzy, sexy, poweful, but smooth choreography is perfect to a T for Jungkook.
This is how I always imagined Jungkook as a solo artist. This is him in his prime, in his best form, musically and visually.
I know JK always talks about the desire to be a true pop star, probably comparing himself to the likes of JB, HS, and Shawn Mendes, but if he could see himself from the outside right now, he will see there is no room for comparison. He is the real star, and he is the moment. It is everyone else who should be channeling their inner JK and not the other way around. I know JK wanted to try different styles, and each of his singles so far had its own purpose, but in a way, I feel like we were robbed with "Seven" and "3D", when all this time we could have been getting songs of the calibre of "Standing next to you". Maybe it's just my age and general dislike for generic pop songs about f*cking all the time and girls, but hearing "Standing next to you" makes JK's previous singles sound immature and even childish in comparison to my ears.
JK of "Seven" and "3D" was giving college fratboy, trying to act all grown up and mature. "Standing next to you" is giving an artist. Someone who boldly takes space and claims it. A man.
This is what it truly means in my eyes to show a more mature side, and I deeply wish we would see more of this in his future solo projects.

Hi!! I hope you're having a great day/night/afternoon!! I used to watch your OC videos all the time when I was younger!! Glad to see you uploading on YouTube again, and I loved your Kai video!! I was wondering if you have any tips (or tricks) for character ref sheets, as I'm currently developing one for an OC of mine! I already have a backstory, a color palette, as well as references, but I'm not sure how to go from there. The character themself (as in like body size), clothing designs, accessories, the placement of everything on the ref sheet? You, of course, don't have to reply to this, but any comments would help!!
Hi! Thanks so much for watching my videos! I think this is a fantastic question. I love making character sheets, and I'd do them a lot more often if they weren't so time consuming. (Though, they don't have to be -- I think its a me problem lol!) But they're SUPER handy both for whoever you may commission to draw them, and yourself if said character has a detail heavy design. Even if this character sheet is just for you, I think it's fun to look at it from the perspective of a hypothetical someone who desires to cosplay (or draw or 3D model) your character and needs a sheet in which to ref from! What things do you think they'd need? I absolutely recommend making a few notes of what you want to spotlight, and doing some thumbnails on how you want to section things out. (they don't have to be this neat, like, AT ALL lmao)
Tumblr media
What angles would be helpful to see? What particular accessories would someone value a closer a closer look at?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These refs of Kai and Samos are a little old now, but I don't consider them out of date even though there's a few things I'd change! Here I have a fairly clear idea of what both characters look like from the front and back, while highlighting important stuff like Samos' front pockets' which are partially covered by the sash. If you have the room, you could even add things like extra props/accessories to give the artists you potential commission things to have your OC interact with. Or! facial expressions to give them a good visual of their personality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for extra clothing designs I'd make a separate sheets using a premade character base and play dress up with them like a paper doll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there's a detail heavy prop the OC in question has on them frequently (like a satchel or a weapon) a mini ref sheet just for that thing might be useful! You could showcase all the pockets in a bag or how magic looks being casted out of a staff. I hope any of this was helpful! I wouldn't get too caught up in aesthetics or the structure of the sheet, because you'll get a feel for that as you work. If you enjoy doing it, and find it worth your while to invest more time in, make multiple sheets! Of the stuff they keep in their bag, what their favorite foods are, likes and dislikes, hairstyles, ect. Even if it stops being a ref for art, it's fun to just have more visuals to learn about a character.

Hey Tumblr Artists, real talk.
My midnight depression is hitting me.
Is getting into the artist industry not impossible? All I've been seeing on my socials and hearing at art college is that if you aren't big on social media then you'll be working retail all your life.
That other artists have all this experience and have been trying everything to get into the art industry only to be denied.
And indie animation is extremely hard to find and get into when you don't know the project it seems. And those jobs I never hear about.
Currently I'm working to get my Digital Arts & Animation degree. I've found a love for character design in specifically 2D animation. But seeing as how 2D is treated currently by companies, I'm loosing hope that I'll get anywhere with my passion and that I'll have to get into something I dislike doing like game design or 3D modeling.
I guess I'm asking for support in a sense. To be assured that I can make it into the industry with my passion and work on 2D character art and animation.

An art question for you! I'm wondering if you have any advice/direction/insight into character design?
To elaborate: I'm a 3D artist (novice), and I'm interested in making my first humanoid character, but I have a hard time modeling anything without reference. However, I cannot draw people, and I certainly cannot design a character, but I'd really like to model a character that is mine, y'know? (I want experience with every part of the process!) To point at an actor in UE5 and say confidently, "*I* made that from scratch! :D"
I know that drawing people is a matter of studying anatomy, gesture, and all that, but design is a skill completely beyond my ken.
Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can share!
This is a very multifaceted question, so there are a few answers depending on your goals:
If you're trying to become a professional artist
If you're just trying to get better at art for yourself
If you want to be a generalist
If you're trying to become a working professional artist:
Most of the time as a professional, you're most likely not going to be concepting a character as well as modeling them.
If becoming a professional 3D character artist is your goal, then focus less on learning design and more on learning how to implement existing designs. In most cases you'll be working from someone else's concept art, and your expertise comes in how you implement things like a sketchily-drawn belt buckle, or interpreting how a given shape should be translated from 2D to 3D.
The best way to practice things like this is to work from lots of existing concepts and begin to understand how 2D artists tend to interpret what will eventually become 3D shapes.
Additionally, you'll benefit from learning things like anatomy, clothing construction, and how different materials bend and deform as they move across the surface of a character's body.
You don't need to know how to draw extremely proficiently to be a good character artist, but learning to draw will absolutely help you in the long run, so I'd highly recommend doing things like taking figure drawing classes and practicing drawing people.
If you just want to become better at personal art:
If your goal is to just make nice stuff for yourself, you'll still benefit from the above advice. However, learning to make better art for yourself also depends on you finding a style that fits your taste and vision for how your art is supposed to look.
Finding your style is all about understanding....
...Your taste in visual design
...How you represent objects, and the shortcuts you are comfortable with when representing them
Developing your taste is an active process, and isn't just "What's the thing I like?" Developing your taste in concept and 3D (and all art, really) is actually "What's the thing I DO like, what's the thing I DON'T like, and WHY do I like or dislike those things?"
As you develop your taste in art, you're also going to want to keep practicing so you can better represent the things you enjoy.
If you want to be a generalist:
First off, before anything else: Being a generalist is HARD.
Really, really hard.
As in, generalist positions simply don't exist in most companies, and the ones where they do exist are extremely rare and generally exist in the form of either indies or mobile studios.
If you want to be a generalist, you need to practice both 2D and 3D skills, and my suggestion would be to get very comfortable jumping between 2D and 3D for concept work. You can get an immense amount of mileage for concept art and illustration by doing super rough blockouts that you then paint/draw over.
For example, here's a rough 3D blockout I did to give myself reference for a very complex scene:
Tumblr media
And here's the finished illustration:
Tumblr media
If I had tried to draw that entirely freehand, it would've taken me literally weeks, and it would still look wrong. Building a blockout and rendering it took away a lot of the guesswork, but still left me room to reinterpret as needed.
You can do the same with less complex things, like getting general proportions for a character, then drawing over the top.
The same points from the above points stand if you want to be a generalist, but with the added wrinkle that it's going to be super tough to get a job doing it unless you're really fast and really good at both concept and 3D.
Further resources:
If you're dead set on designing your own characters, look to the best concept art out there and try to make things at the same quality bar.
That's really all there is to it.
(Additionally, make sure you're looking at actual concept art as reference, rather than illustration. Things like League of Legends splash images, or big brushy mood pieces generally aren't concepts, even though a lot of people think they are.)
To get yourself into a mental mode where you're thinking like a concept artist, try to replicate what you see on model sheets for characters from animation and games.
Model sheets help explain how you're supposed to see and construct a character, and as a 3D character artist you're going to have a unique ability to see where some of these model sheets might go wrong as you work with them.
Disney and Looney Tunes tend to have excellent model sheets:

For games-specific model sheets, look no further than the work of Sandra Duchiewicz and Rinehart Appiah on Total War: Warhammer:

Presenting your work in a way like you see above will drastically reduce the mental work of coming up with a good design because you're trying to come up with some shapes that work well from all angles.
I hope this is helpful, and good luck!

Justin Timberlake remix??? Isn't he the number 1 public enemy right now? Is Hybe for fucking real? Can 3D somehow get even worse? God bless the alternate version. I will forever hate Hybe and scold Jungkook for not making it the main track.
But, seriously, what kind of self-respecting company that wants a bigger share of the US and Western market handpicks some of the most problematic Western artists for collabs? I know pretty much all of them suck one way or another, but not only are these artists problematic, they're also disliked and irrelevant.

26. G.I. Joe and Barbie's voiceboxes get switched.
A group of performance artists switched the voiceboxes of about 300 G.I. Joe and Teen Talk Barbie. This was later referenced in the Simpsons episode Lisa Vs. Malibu Stacy:

29. Lawrence comes out in For Better or for Worse (April 10th)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lawrence, Michael's friend in the strip came out of the closet in the spring of 1993. Of course, people got mad and demanded the strip be pulled from their local papers:
In the next few weeks, Lawrence, who is 17, will also reveal his sexual orientation to his mother and stepfather. Reader beware; the next two sentences give away plot details. His mother will insist Lawrence is mistaken, and his stepfather will throw Lawrence out of the house. He will spend a lonely night in a doughnut shop until Mike locates him and brings him home for a reconciliation with his famiy.
The plot line has already proved too rich for some tastes. Universal Press Syndicate editorial director Lee Salem says about 20 of some 1,400 newspapers subscribing to “For Better or For Worse” have asked for backup material that can be substituted for the Lawrence strips, and eight have canceled the comic outright.
Lynn Johnston, the Canadian cartoonist who writes and draws the 14-year-old strip, says she knew she was entering a sensitive area, but she’s a little surprised by the scope of the negative reaction.
“What I wrote was kind; it was caring,” she says. “It explored both sides of the issue.”
[...]
Thomas Mitchell did. He’s the editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, one of the newspapers pulling the Lawrence panels in favor of backup material.
“We had a pretty little heated argument among ourselves,” he says.
Mitchell finally decided parents shouldn’t abruptly find themselves explaining the material to their children over the morning Rice Krispies.
“It’s the comics page, man. Give me a break,” he says. “It’s an interesting topic. Teenage homosexuality: How do you handle it; how do you talk about it?”
Mitchell says he wouldn’t object to a feature story on the subject, possibly illustrated by strips from “For Better or For Worse.”
Bob Hansen of Enfield probably wishes he was getting Mitchell’s newspaper. Hansen is a Courant subscriber who called the paper Monday to complain about the tack Johnston’s strip had taken.
“I’m very upset about it,” he says. “Comics, in the first place, comics are for fun.”
Hansen says he doesn’t object to homosexuals, but he objects to having homsexuality pushed at people who aren’t interested in hearing about it. In particular, he disliked Lawrence’s remark, in Monday’s episode, insisting he isn’t confused about his orientation: “Everybody else is confused.” 2

For the record, I obsessed over For Better or for Worse almost as much as I did Funky Winkerbean. Good to know Lawrence had a good ending as the strip wound to the end in the Summer of 2008.

31. Addy becomes an American Girl
There was some controversy among the company whether Addy would be "too real" for kids:
Indeed, the story of Addy may be too heavy for the frail shoulders of a doll, and it clearly represents a dramatic shift in the tone of these children's books. While the other dolls face such traumas as wild bears, sailing during a storm or even choosing between loyalty to the crown of England or the patriots of the new Colonies, none can really compare with watching your brother being whipped by a cruel overseer because he "done run off." In "Meet Addy," the first of her series, she escapes from slavery with her mother, after they are forcibly separated from the rest of the family.
Pittsburgh novelist Connie Porter, who was hired to write the Addy books, is aware of the criticism. "Some people don't want to see a character in slavery -- that's ridiculous," she said. "You can run the risk of being so politically correct that you can lose whole periods of history. Children are more ready to talk about these things than some adults are."
Porter, who met twice with the advisory board to discuss story content and the use of dialect, said that she has not trivialized slavery in any way. If anything, she has made it more real to a modern child than it might have been before, she said. "I tried to show how a black child would be treated during the day at the age of 9," she said. "That she had a job like a grown person. Addy works all day worming tobacco plants. She also serves occasionally for the master, who treats her with indifference. At one point they treat her badly. She's a piece of property." 4

32. Krusty gets canceled, but marge doesn’t say anything. (May 13th)
Y'all Ever notice that Marge has no lines in the classic Simpsons episode "Krusty Gets Canceled"? She's there, but no lines. According to the DVD commentaries, Al Jean said that Julie Kavner felt uncomfortable being in an episode with so many celebrity guests, describing it as "tasteless". I guess she changed her mind through the years.

33. Lorena Bobbit copycats
In a four-month period, at least three men besides John Bobbitt had their genitals trashed by angry women. In April, a 29-year-old woman in Milwaukee partially severed her boyfriend's penis after he announced that he wanted to break up, reported the Milwaukee Journal. In Waynesville, N.C., in July, Cynthia Mason Gillett, 28, was charged with setting her husband's genitals on fire while he slept after an argument, reported the Charlotte Observer. In April, Jose Dogelio, 31, was shot in the penis by a woman he was "flashing" on a street in Dasmarinas, Philippines, according to the Manila newspaper, People's Journal. 5
Cynthia was put on probation in January of 1994 because her husband refused to testify against her. She doused his genitals in nail polish and caught them on fire! 6 I could not find Jose's condition.
When I was a kid and I'd see pieces about Lorena and John Bobbit on the news, I pictured Lorena cutting John's penis off with scissors.
