• River would be one of the most gentle humans you would ever experience or witness in your life, both platonically and romantically. Whether the two of you were being intimate or were just spending some quiet quality time together, he would treat you like you could break at any second - he constantly makes you feel like the rarest treasure in the world.

• River would get quite upset if you didn’t share most of his key values - and the relationship also wouldn’t progress far if that was the case too. He needs someone who can appreciate things in life similarly to how he does as he often feels outcasted from the majority of people he finds himself surrounded by. You end up providing a safe space. A place he can feel safe and freely open up about what he’s thinking with someone who knows exactly what he’s going through.

• Most days he likes to spend his time having peaceful alone time with you, or just surrounded by you and his friends without the stresses of needing to go out and party or keep up the Hollywood image he needs to maintain. In this way, he feels more genuine and knows that the people around him aren’t there for publicity - and he’s able to enjoy your company with the private time he’s given so little of.

• River loves to include you in welfare and animal rights activities that he takes part of, and depending on how public the two of you are being with certain charities the two of you may even become public figures for the ones you help. And he definitely wouldn’t be selfish about this. If you were to ever mention a cause or charity that you felt was doing genuine good for the world then he would spend time working with them because he knows how much it would mean to you - and he’s the type of person that can’t sit back and do nothing, so helping would be the only option in his mind.

• He absolutely loves having you around his family. He’s extremely close to all of his siblings, so you end up becoming good friends with them very quickly and may even spend time with them when you’re away from River due to them being close to you. Nothing makes him happier than seeing you all get along as he views it as his family finally having the thing that would make it complete to him and he could never imagine what it would be like without you once you’ve joined.

• River doesn’t get jealous, but he does definitely get protective. He knows what kind of people he’s surrounded by and not all of them he can honestly say are good people as much as he wish he could. He knows immediately who he can trust so he makes sure that you know who he wants you to stay away from. He loves you so much and will always know that in the back of his mind the two of you are perfect for each other and therefore won’t be leaving him for anyone else any time soon - and would certainly never accuse you of cheating.

• After having a well established relationship with you, River tries to stay sober a lot more often than he previously would ever try to. This is because he’s realised that he can’t fully enjoy your conversations with him or take in all of your beauty when he’s not fully sober and since he cherishes you so deeply he tries his best to make sure he can appreciate you as best as he can. This also comes down to him wanting to better himself for you and be the perfect man as best as he can attempt (as he thinks that if he can try to make the world a better place he can always try to make himself better too).

• River likes to play with your hands, or make sure he’s always touching you, in the moments he feels overwhelmed or anxious. This is especially when he’s out in public or at an even on a day that he feels that he should have stayed home or been somewhere with less public interaction. Knowing that he can also feel you comes as a great reassurance to him and calms him down quite a lot in a very short span of time and it reminds him that whatever situation he is in is only temporary so he will later be able to have alone and calm time with you later.

• Sometimes the two of you sit together in a comfortable silence as he writes and plays music - much of which the world would never get to hear. You both find it a very calm way of expressing your feelings to each other and it helps to strengthen your bond together. Whatever River finds difficult to say out loud he writes into his songs, and the majority of what he writes has a deeper meaning that only you or very few other people understand and can point out.

• River likes you to hold him on the days he feels down. Usually he cuddles himself into you while you play with his hair (which he especially loves) as it calms him down much more than any other form of trying to relax would and you being around immediately puts him in a better mood. The way you each understand each other makes it very easy to figure out when something is wrong with the other - and even easier to figure out what will help the situation.

I absolutely love the bit of your newest post about Zim just casually *walking* back towards Tak in the rain. I can just imagine the scene and it's fucking amazing. I love Zim just being causally terrifying to others (intentional or not) in ways that aren't just him being a bit crazy or destructive.

I also love all your stuff that actually uses Zim's background, and all that comes with that.

I wonder what it would be like for Tak if she managed to genuinely piss him off (another thing that I love your headcanons of)

Tak absolutely refuses to admit it, but she’s the underdog in this situation. She’s an ex-soldier with plenty of engineering experience from her time on Dirt, and has access to a holographic disguise that’s more advanced than any other disguise in the empire, but her opponent is a fully trained ex-invader with an extensive scientific background that knows earth better than any other irken.

Plus, she fell HARD for Zim’s dumb act.

Tak came from Dirt, knowing nothing about Zim other than the fact that he’s a complete idiot and that he ruined her life. Then, upon arriving on Earth and revealing herself to Zim, that information is seemingly proven to be true, with Zim acting like a complete idiot, interrupting her multiple times and even after explaining everything to him, he STILL doesn’t understand, immediately believing that Tak is after his robot bee. She meets Zim face to face and he’s a complete idiot that doesn’t deserve the time of day from her.

But what if I told you that that was exactly what Zim WANTED her to think. Zim puts on a dumb persona specifically so people underestimate him and/or are manipulated easier by him. So upon another Irken showing up on his doorstep, clearly wanting him dead, he plays dumb. He successfully gets Tak to believe that he’s a complete moron that’s not worth killing, since there’s no way this idiot could ever come close to stopping her plan…. ..right?

The base-disabling nanobots were a surprise, but Zim still managed to minimize the damage, since he got Tak to deploy them on the upper floor where none of his important equipment is. His base was still temporarily disabled, but imagine the damage that would have been caused if Tak released them in his proper base, where all of his actual equipment and computers are.

Plus, Zim is a complete enigma, not just to Tak, but to the entire irken race.

I already mentioned how Zim figured out how to waterproof himself using paste, while no sane irken would even consider using that stuff as waterproofing. And it’s a well kept secret of Zim’s, with not even Dib knowing how he does it, or why Zim’s waterproofing is so inconsistent (he frequently forgets to apply the stuff, so he only really consistently has waterproofing on days when it’s expected to rain).

But that’s not all. Zim has one thing that puts him above the average irken. He’s extremely adaptable. He can change his plans on the fly, he will go against what he’s been taught in the military if it benefits him and most importantly of all, he doesn’t care about efficiency.

For all irkens, efficiency is the most important thing. You must be effective and efficient to succeed. But Zim doesn’t care about that. As long as it works, he’ll use it. For example, waterproofing. Most irkens would never use paste because, well, it’s a primitive arts and crafts material that doesn’t last forever on the invader’s skin, losing effectiveness over time. They’d instead spend days searching for or creating their own solution that is effective as possible, perfect waterproofing or bust. Zim on the other hand, doesn’t care. Paste does it’s job just fine, so he uses it. No sense trying to fix something that’s not broken.

Even his Voot Cruiser is an example of this. Zim’s Voot is obviously an old model. It uses a propulsion system instead of whatever thrustless system modern ships use and doesn’t have an onboard computer like modern ships, and yet he refuses to get rid of it. It’s a perfectly good ship that’s served him well in the past, so he’s not getting rid of it for the sake of efficiency.

And speaking of Zim’s Voot, his dogfight with Tak is a perfect demonstration of Zim’s military skill against Tak, because the thing is, even with an outdated ship, in his dogfight with Tak, he pilots it with masterful skill, managing to outmaneuver Tak throughout the entire fight. Keep in mind that Zim managed to remain directly behind Tak for the entire dogfight (which is a very important and central part of dogfighting), with her and her modified modern ship unable to shake him. During the entire dogfight, ZIM is the only one that fires any weapons. Tak can’t even get into a position that would let her shoot back. Even when flying through the lava around them, she is unable to get Zim off her tail. Zim was winning that dogfight even before Gaz and Gir started helping.

Tak has to resort to physically ramming him to do any damage. And even that does minimal damage as Zim simply ejects the cockpit window and replaces it, which in of itself could be an example of Zim being adaptable and going against his traditional military training.

And the final nail in the coffin during the whole dogfight, Zim is completely silent during the entire thing. He isn’t putting up a persona or trying to make himself seem dumber or smarter than he really is. Zim is completely focused on the task at hand, which is a terrifying thing for Tak to be up against. The only time he speaks is after he wins, when he claims that Tak’s piloting is worse than his, indicating that despite Zim being able to pretty much run circles around Tak in his ship, he doesn’t even view himself as that good of a pilot.

But then there’s this scene that single handily adds a whole new layer to Zim’s character:

Tak’s ship is destroyed and is spinning out in front of Zim. Zim proceeds to joke about Tak’s piloting skills, but then has a realization of some kind and then proceeds to ram Tak’s ship. It seems a bit strange, but it actually shows us something very important about Zim.

First of all, his realization. What was he referring to when he said “Wait”? Well, Tak’s ship is spinning out in front of him and although she does have an escape pod, I’ve played enough Kerbal Space Program to know that deploying something while the main ship is uncontrollably spinning like that will result in the pod getting destroyed or at least heavily damaged. And since her ship is damaged and disabled, Tak can’t just stop the spin with a few button presses. She has no control.

And judging by Zim’s face when he says “Wait”, he knows that.

That’s the look of a concerned Zim. Despite just fighting with her, Zim almost seems worried about Tak’s safety as her ship is stuck spinning with no safe way of ejecting. Even his tone of voice indicates this, as the insulting tone he was just using while making fun of Tak’s piloting skills INSTANTLY disappears upon his realization.

And then, when Zim rams Tak, think about what he just did. He knocked Tak into a bubble of lava. Irken ships have been shown to be extremely heatproof, given how the massive was able to fly through a star and how Zim and Tak’s own ships have been fine zipping around the lava in the dogfight a few seconds ago, and lava is a liquid, not a solid object, so Tak’s ship isn’t going to be very damaged by crashing into it. The most crashing into the lava will do is slow her ship down since that’s what happens when you submerge a moving object in a liquid.

So by knocking Tak’s ship into that lava bubble, Zim slowed the spinning of Tak’s ship, making it safe for her to eject. The fact that Tak only ejects after Zim rams her and not while she’s spinning out adds more evidence to this.

Zim had no reason to do this. He could have very easily left Tak spinning and unable to eject from her damaged ship or even just shot Tak while she was defenceless, but he didn’t. So Zim actively chose to spare Tak by giving her a safe chance to eject from her ship.

So despite Tak wanting him dead and Zim being fully aware of this, he chooses to spare her, fully knowing that she won’t do the same. This pretty much goes against the entire mindset of irkens, especially invaders, who, valuing efficiency over everything else, will remove any threat that they get even the slightest chance to remove.

This part of Zim’s character where he spares those that definitely won’t spare him can be seen with one other character, Dib, who Zim is fully capable of killing with minimal effort, but chooses to keep alive, only attempting to kill him in certain elaborate schemes, and even seeming to go easy on him, not using weapons or his PAK in most fights.

There are two different reasons that Zim may do this. The first is that he may purposely spare people that he considers “worthy adversaries”, despite the fact that they definitely will not do the same to him. If this is true, then Dib and Tak both seem to be considered worthy adversaries by Zim, but since Tak is an irken and much more of a threat than Dib, he doesn’t go easy on her like he does with Dib, but still chooses to spare her after the fight is over.

The second reason is that Zim may fight dirty, but he has his limits. Killing Tak in a dogfight? Sure. But letting Tak die in a broken ship she can’t control or shooting her while she’s in no condition to fight? Hell no. Same goes for Dib. Elaborate scheme where you turn him into a sausage or throw him into a dimension containing a room with a moose? Sure. Just straight up shooting him because he’s a human child and you’re an alien soldier with technology more advanced than he will ever know? Hell no.

It’s probably a mix of the two options, but the final point is that Zim has a weird relationship with killing, and will spare people that won’t do the same.

That being said, Tak hasn’t seen Zim get angry enough to go quiet, although she did witness Zim being focused enough to go quiet during the entire dogfight, which is very close to the same thing. She’s never seen Zim properly drop the dumb persona either, as she herself fell for it and still believes that Zim is an idiot now.

However, if she ever did see Zim’s quiet and competent persona that he gains when he’s extremely angry, she’d never want to see it again. Especially since Zim is very likely to forgo his usual rules with sparing in this situation, and he already doesn’t go easy on her like he does with Dib.

okay because of the differing opinions on @calware's post i had to go and check for myself. after all, we've all heard info passed down the fanon grapevine over the years. so, here it is:

is dave strider right or left handed?

obviously, this being homestuck, character sprites flip like every half a second, so i'm trying to take that into account here. alright, let's plow through an entire comic's worth of dave panels.

in his very first appearance, dave uses a katana from his wall to slash through his name command left-handedly.

he proceeds to use his left hand for many actions he takes in his apartment, including typing.

he then uses his right hand to fistbump cal, open the attic, pick up a sword, and escape the puppet pile. his computer is also set up for his right hand.

so already we've got a lot of switching going on, as to be expected with homestuck. i'm going to just try and focus on "main" shots now and not minute sprite details, since those seem to switch constantly.

dave climbs the staircase after picking up the sword with his right hand. however, when beginning the strife with bro he switches it to his left.

during that fight his sprite (and dominant hand) flips many times. while he is laying on the floor beaten he texts john with his right. once he gets up, he resumes typing with his left. [EDIT: he pretty much always uses his left hand when texting; there are very few panels where this sprite is flipped.]

during the [s] enter, dave is famously seen drawing a sbahj panel with his mouse right-handedly. he does this again talking to tavros later. his computer setup seems pretty consistent in this way.

during [s] accelerate, dave flips his sword between hands multiple times both in sprite and hero mode.

then, for no apparent reason except for that he probably hates me and wants me to suffer, dave switches his main hand back and forth repeatedly for the entire rest of the comic.

he frequently carries his sword in his right hand, except for stray panels where, when actually using the sword, he favors his left (panels 5 and 8 above). however, this isn’t a case of him only carrying with his right and then using his left to actually wield— because as you can see in panel 9 above, he also uses it right-handedly.

he uses his left hand during the entire fight with jade and bec, but then, switches back to his right during cascade.

during meteorstuck he seems to use his right hand for most activities, including drawing and writing, except for the penis ouija scene, in which he uses his left.

he takes all his selfies with his right hand, then confronts jade with his left hand. his watch is also positioned on his left wrist, which is traditionally an indicator of right-handedness; and he holds his sword in his right again as he absconds.

during the dogfight he makes most of his attacks with his right hand, and switches to his left to parry bec. when he dies in game over, he's holding his sword in his left.

he's using his right hand in essentially all of the non-sprite shots in collide, except for this last big red one.

that's all i've got.

conclusion: ????

in all honesty, he seems to switch between either hand frequently enough that you could make an argument for almost anything. hooray, everyone's headcanons are valid!

though i will say that he definitely uses his right hand more frequently in panels. if you only count panels where he's actually using his sword, it's closer to an even split, but i'd still tentatively say that he favors right more often than not.

the widespread fanon concept that he canonically only uses his right hand while drawing and otherwise uses his left, is unfortunately mostly cheryypicked in terms on panels. but that's not to say it's necessarily wrong. there's too little consistency in the art to definitely call it false

considering he's been seen both writing and swordfighting with his left, you can headcanon whatever the fuck you want! (and let's be honest, he has leftie vibes).

While I was rewatching The Phantom Menace yesterday, I was thinking during the sequence at the end with the N-1 Starfighters that one of them could be Din's, and boom! A rather amusing new headcanon was born.

So, obviously we know that Peli Motto somehow came into possession of one of the ships and in approximately 9ABY on Tatooine, she restores it with Din on Tatooine.

But what if four decades previously, it was the same starship used by a certain Anakin Skywalker during the Battle of Naboo...

So, why would this be funny?

Well, because of what Anakin uses the ship for, and the fact its eventual owner has a well known disdain for droids...

After Anakin leaves the hangar on Naboo, he joins the dogfight up in space. Eventually, he finds himself on one of the Trade Federation's ships and after a bit of panicking, has a great time destroying a few droids...

As they fire at him, he launches a few shots which inadvertently causes the Droid Control Ship to blow up. Every single one of the thousands of droids on Naboo instantly powers down, ensuring that the planet is saved.

But this kid really used an N-1 starfighter to blow up an enormous ship of vital strategic importance. I mean, look at it go! Bye bye droids!

I have nothing to base this hc off other than Anakin used an N-1 to destroy droids and Din (who hates droids) eventually has the same kind of ship. But I'm running with it because I think it's hilarious and that Din would be pretty pleased to know that his N-1 has a history of destroying droids...

Wizard, indeed.

I love thinking about Bucky and Steve volunteering post-Endgame so here is where I think they would volunteer.

My headcanon for Bucky is an animal shelter. He sees one of those sappy ASPCA commercials and it upsets him so badly that he decides he needs to start volunteering. At first, he mostly like feeds and cleans little kitties and puppies, which he loves. He loves how even the teeny little kittens don't see him as a threat. They meow and lick at his fingers and it just makes him feel so warm and fuzzy inside because everybody else in the world sees him as a murderer but they just see him as the nice guy who brings them food and gives them belly scratches. But after a while, Bucky finds himself drawn to the "aggressive dogs." The ones that the shelter says are pretty much doomed to die there. The ones who were thrown into dogfighting when they were just puppies, the ones who never knew kindness. The pitties with big, sad eyes who bark at anyone who tries to touch them. He offers to help with them one day, because he's strong enough that he doesn't have to worry about being bitten or anything. They don't bite at Bucky, though. He knows how to move, how to reach for them, how to show them that they won't be met with violence. They don't understand what Bucky went through, but they seem to trust him in a unique way.

My headcanon for Steve is a children's hospital. Everyone kinda figures he's doing the whole "superhero who visits sick kids" thing, mostly for publicity, but he starts going back often and forming friendships with these kids and their families, and soon enough he's practically an uncle to most of the kids there. He knows the strength they have, just to stay alive, he remembers it all too well. They all marvel at his muscles and his shield, but he knows he was stronger pre-serum than he ever was after. They see themselves in him, they tell him they're getting medicine that's going to make them better "just like him" and they ask him if getting the serum was scary during their infusions. He shares Sarah Rogers' wisdom with their parents. He makes silly sketches of whatever the kids request, and they always giggle at his old-fashioned jokes and his inability to grasp modern slang. They ask him if he knew Abraham Lincoln or Cleopatra and he makes up elaborate stories to keep them entertained.

mei's 20k celebration !!

first of all, thank you to each and every single one of you for being here!! together you make just over 20k. the size of my audience is very hard for me to fathom (seriously, have you ever googled what 20,000 people look like? insane!!!) but i know i'm incredibly grateful that you're here!! writing is very fun for me but it's even better with lovely people like you cheering me on, and i'm happy to do what i do if it means you get to enjoy it.

i have been exceptionally busy lately, and i haven't done a follower celebration since 10K i believe, so i figured now was a good time for another one! i know not everyone is into the same fandoms as everyone else, so this celebration will be separated into each different fandom that i write for. why? it's fun for me to plan things around my fandoms, but i didn't want to exclude anyone, so i just made a little mini celebration for them all :)

Do you ever think abt how gaul was originally an obstetrician? I’ve never seen in discussed anywhere but that detail chilled me to my core when I read tbosas. sorry this is sooo random but I needed to share that with somebody. Kbye:3

I actually think about this surprisingly a lot! I was so sad that they didn’t include that detail in the movie when she’s stitching up Snow!

It’s actually one of those throwaway lines in the book that really make the character for me! (the other one being Festus Creed dogfighting line)

The way she talks about the parents wanting reassurances about their kids futures and her being unable to give them any (Ch. 16):

To me, her words characterize her as someone who wants certainty and control, and despite all her claims that people are born ruthless and bad, she still needs to influence people to get them to reinforce her own worldview. Confirmation bias.

I just think that it matches so well with her character that what children might face in the future (and possibly shape them) makes her uncomfortable (but maybe I'm reading too much into it).

Also there's something to her talking about this while she's stitching Snow up that really reinforces a kind of creator-creation imagery to me. Like she's waiting to deliver him into the world reborn. Volumnia being the name of Shakespeare's Coriolanus' mother... There's something here that has to be at least partially on-purpose by Suzanne Collins. I'm not just making things up (unlike 90% of this blog).

Anyway, being brought into the world by Gaul of all people does invoke a sense of horror (also lol Snow's internal monologue in that scene). It's why I weaponize it in my Dr. Gaul-Pres. Ravinstill weird dynamic. (I headcanon that despite the Vickers' being the President and by extension his family's personal physicians. Gaul still comes out of obstetrician retirement to help with the births of all of the president's brother's progeny... which obviously includes Felix. I've been putting him through situations in my mind since his literal birth.)

I've mentioned her past as an obstetrician a couple times in my Pres. Ravinstill-centric fics as well. The above headcanon makes a guest appearance in one of them (In Your Image), and I definitely mention it in passing within Ave Atque Vale.

Umm, yeah, so based on the length of this response, I definitely think about her being a former obstetrician a lot!

You absolutely can, it's my favourite thing to talk about!!

It is very, very hard to get the babies out of Ice's arms once he's got them, he could sit for hours on end, rocking them and humming to them and pulling faces to make them smile. Mav just has to perch his chin on Ice's shoulder and grin down at them. He's not that annoyed, the only thing cuter than his grand babies is watching his husband with them

Poppy especially is always insisting on bursting into Ice's office and sitting with him while he works. She'll sit on his knee and say 'tell the boats to go over there' and Ice will smile and nod, yes of course, dear. As he does something completely unrelated.

Tommy, the little boy, adores stuffed animals, they're his favourite thing. As soon as his grandparents hear that, all of a sudden he's always coming back from their house with a brand new stuffed animal. Bradley will tell his uncles they are making his life so much harder, Mav says that sounds like a you problem,

In my head, there's three hangster babies, Poppy then Tommy then another little girl called Joy. Joy takes the biggest interest in man's hangar, from when she's about four she's always wanting to be there, always fascinated by what her Pops is doing. She can take apart a car engine and put it back together by the time she's twelve, Mav is so proud of her. However she's also the one who takes the biggest interest in Ice's babushka's recipe book and spends hours happily baking with him in the kitchen and even opens a bakery when she's older where she still uses those same old recipes she learned from her deda.

Maverick is putting that somehow still well functioning sixty year old body to use, always running around with the kids on his shoulders, playing aeroplane with them, swimming with them. Once they go home with their dads, he's face down on the floor groaning that tours of duty were less exhausting than being a grandparent.

They are absolutely those grandparents who fill their grandkids full of sugar, spoil them rotten and let them sleep way past nap time. Bradley is on his Knees, you're literally killing him.

Three a side family dogfight football tournaments. Tommy sits out because honestly, it gets hostile and he's not cut out for it

Ice is always falling asleep with his grand babies on the sofa, Mav calls it 'their' nap time meaning all three babies and his husband. They're all nightmares if they don't get at least an hour

Poppy hears her deda's callsign and is a little confused by it. She asks if he got it because he's warm and soft like a polar bear because honestly thats the only version of Ice that she's ever known, she can't imagine him being a smug, tooth snapping asshole

The hangster kids taking it in turns wearing that cowboy had Bradley had when he was tiny

Everyone currently stationed at Top Gun knew that bonfires were the Dagger’s special way of celebrating, well…anything

Successful missions, birthdays, family visits, milestones, etc.

Even if there was nothing specific to celebrate, there was one wherever they went (off base, of course)

But no matter what the occasion—or whose occasion—it was guaranteed that Jake was man to set it up (lol)

So technically, bonfires were really more Jake’s thing than a Dagger thing, but they were more than happy to partake every time

His favorite thing about fires was how they were fit for nearly any occasion or location

At the beach? Bonfire after some dogfight football

Even before they started playing, he asked the local lifeguards if he could set one up

Penny keeps a stash of driftwood that would end up on the shores for whenever he wanted to set one up

In the snow? That’s what fireplaces are for

Everyone knows not to sit in his “prime spot” in the living room whenever the fireplace was lit

(That prime spot being on the floor in front of the couch by the windowed wall so that while you were on the couch, he could sit in between your legs and feel the enough heat from the fire to warm him but not feel stuffy)

Backyard party? He built a fire pit at home

It was the pride of your backyard, knowing how much work he put into building it

“I want to make as many memories as we can around this, so this is for you, too, as much as it is for me,” he told you when he proposed the idea right after moving in

And true enough, many moments were spent there, even if it wasn’t always lit

Middle of the afternoon? “I just got a new grill, let’s bring out some beers and make it a barbecue!” and he would proudly wear his “Hot Stuff 🌶️” apron while he cooks

Late at night? “Honey, where are the—?” you hand him the outdoor blankets and the s’mores kits before he can even finish

He’d even ask Rooster to bring a guitar to play some songs for everyone as the night unwinds

From childhood to now, many of his favorite memories involved some sort of gathering around an open flame

Camping trips every summer with his family

Parties he attended in high school

You guys even lit a small one—just for the two of you—at the end of your wedding reception at the Seresin family ranch after the last guest left but you guys didn’t want to end the night just yet

Heck, the first night you stayed over!!!

There just so happened to be a storm that night which caused the electricity to go out

But since he lived in a small apartment then with no fireplace, he looked for some candles to use for emergencies and placed a few around the room

And he used one to set on his kitchen counter where you both sat, taking turns trying to roast marshmallows on toothpicks over the single tiny flame

It became a sort of tradition every time he got relocated and moved into a new place

After dinner on the first night, you guys would turn off the lights, light a single candle, and roast marshmallows before going to bed

Needless to say, bonfires were Jake’s special love language

That wherever a fire was lit, was where his loved ones would be

SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO GET TO THIS BUT YES. also i'm so so sorry if this isn't what you imagined, my writing has just gone downhill lately lol

hangman loves how you're a woman of many talents. you can fly planes. you're almost unbeatable at darts. slick with pool. can rival him in dogfight football. and you're one of the only people he goes soft for

(lies, he loves everyone. but you in particular? there's almost nothing he won't do for you)

you're set to head out to the beach again and taking one big car

you're asked to drive but then you get into the front seat and just sit there, frozen in place

and that's when the crew puts two and two together and realizes you can't drive

so the next few minutes are spent teasing you (lovingly, of course)

"how are you in the top 1% but don't know how to drive a car?" hangman had asked

you explained how you took your test before leaving for top gun, but failed

and since you didn't have much time to practice you never re-tried it

but it was also because you were highkey scared to

(also you had very faint memories of maverick trying to teach you back @ home. very traumatic. he was gripping the overhead handle for life even though you weren't even on the freeway yet...)

hangman ends up driving, right. and you know when guys do That thing when they drive/reverse? yeah, he does that

and. you're speechless as you watch because you have the greatest view of his arms and side profile from where you're sitting

(like what the fuck nobody ever told you that lieutenant jake seresin had some really, really nice arms.)

phoenix kicks you in the ankle and gives you a look that tells you she sees the look on your face. and your brightened cheeks

it's hilarious

you cannot stop yourself from staring when you get to the beach. he can drive well, he flies well, and he's ripped? a far better 3 in 1 combo than the shampoo you're sure he uses imo

everyone gets into this huge water fight after the game

(and no, it was not rooster's fault for instigating the conflict)

hangman jogs toward you and is all like "hey sweetheart, give me a hug)

and you fall for it

and so you get soaked from head to toe because he's drenched with seawater

but later as you're walking out he notices you're shivering pretty badly

and he feels so bad

so he takes off the brand new shirt he'd changed into and gives it to you

and the mf walks shirtless all the way back to the car it's fucking hilarious

and he's like "let me make it up to you. i'll teach you how to drive. no more traumatic memories from mav, and you get to spend time with your favorite person :)"

the next day he comes knocking at your door...when it's still dark out

you're pissed off and ready to beat the shit out of whoever it was but then you realized it was hangman and you're like. oh. never mind

you want to question why the fuck this man is trying to take you driving at 4 in the morning. but you don't, because he has yours and his best interests in mind. usually.

the sky goes from black to grey as you hit the road and you're shaking

but this time it's most likely because his hand is on your thigh (to steady you, of course. but we all know this lil shit is using it as an excuse to get closer to you. this whole lesson was his excuse to get closer to you, honestly)

hangman is very gentle and surprisingly so good at explaining things. so within minutes you're calm again and driving smoothly

he gives you directions on where to go (keeping his hand on your thigh the whole time ofc lmao)

there was one time where you were pulling up to a traffic light and supposed to slowly hit the brakes. but instead you pressed the accelerator and went shooting forward

if this surprises hangman, he doesn't show it

"sweetheart, i don't know how you mix the two up. let's pray we don't have to pay a fine or something"

and you end up at this nice area with a stunning view of the ocean

he puts out his jacket for you two to sit on and watch the sunrise

"worth the drive, wasn't it" he whispered into your ear and you're like hell the fuck yeah it was

though it was terrifying going on the freeway. even if that was only for a little bit

you drive slower on the way back and you end up being late to one of maverick's training maneuvers

but it's worth it

oh also. you go to the local dmv maybe a month later. hangman lets you borrow his car. you pass with flying colors)

(he had bribed you with a date at your favorite italian restaurant so that was part of your motivation)

(most of it was because of the fact that you could spend more time with him. you'd take any and every chance you got)

when you do pass, hangman has the crew throw you a giant party and it's so funny

but it makes you happy because it shows how much they all cared
