Your comic series is the first Rottmnt comic Iv ever read! It was an amazing first impression to the Rottmnt fandom! Could you teach me how to draw the turtle boys ( rise turtles)?
Also love the new update!
Tumblr media
Aw! I’m so glad my comic made on good impression on you! ^v^
Of course! I’d love to help you!
Tumblr media
So first thing’s first, here’s the boys the best I can draw them. The most important thing when learning to draw new characters is identifying what makes them look like them. We’ll start with the faces since that’s, in most cases, the point of focus.
Tumblr media
Leo’s face is a pretty tall and vaguely pentagonal. His face is also very angular, the corners of his cheeks and top of his head are very sharp. Leo has the traditional style mask with tails that drop down to about his waist.
Tumblr media
Donnie has that smart boi forehead and majestic eyebrows. His forehead often has a soft curve to it while, similarly to Leo, his cheeks and jaw use sharp angles. Remember too that the top of his head is flat, there’s no curve. His mask is that newer pirate style that wraps over the top of his head, with the tails looking like curvy squares.
Tumblr media
Mikey’s face is a combination of a rounded square and a circle. The top of his head, while much rounder than Donnie’s, is somewhat square. The bottom of his face is a curve. Sometimes I draw the curve in line segments, but it’s not a requirement and won’t impact the way he looks. In general though, Mikey has a very circular face. His mask is the traditional TMNT style with the rounded bouncing tails on the back.
Tumblr media
Raph is arguably the hardest to get right for some odd reason. Really though Raph’s face is just a shorter version of Leo’s face with slightly more exaggerated angles. His face is like a fat pentagon. Also tip: Raph’s eyes are always just a little smaller then you think they’re going to be. Trace some scenes from the ROTTMNT movie, you’ll see what I mean. Raph’s mask is the same style as Donnie’s where it covers the whole top of his head. There’s a small nick on the edge above his right cheek and the tails are tattered.
Okay, next are their markings! They play a lot in how easily identifiable they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I figured these diagrams should help as a little map as to what spots go where.
Alright, now we’ll look at their shells. There are many amazing diagrams and explanations for drawing their shells on Pinterest I’ve found, but I’ll sum it up here as best I can.
Tumblr media
Leo’s shell is very sleek in design making his is profile look the thinnest of his brothers. Many people describe his general body shape as being an inverted triangle.
Tumblr media
Donnie’s shell is very straight with hardly any curves. I didn’t include his battle shell in this since that qualifies as “gear” in my opinion, so you get to see what Donnie’s shell looks like! You’ll notice that the sides of his shell are very wide, which I’m guessing is because the curve of his carapace is so shallow.
Tumblr media
Mikey’s shell is very similar to Leo’s but is a lot thicker and boxier(haha get it? Cause he’s like, a Box Turtle? :D I’m so lame…). He’s also much rounder and the distance between his plastron and carapace is pretty big.
Tumblr media
Raph’s shell is probably the most complex of the boys because of all the spikes. Good things to keep in mind are that the spikes on the top of his plastron angle out, and spikes on his carapace flow up. In general think of Raph as a pentagon, he’s got big broad shoulders and arms and almost comically short legs. (And yes, I’m aware that I didn’t include the side of his shell here, it was too big to fit on the diagram. But just to give you an idea of where it should be, around the “w” in “flow” is where it should connect to his carapace.
Okay! So now that we’ve covered what the boys look like, let’s apply it to their bodies!
Tumblr media
Here’s a quick sketch of Leo. “Oh, but Indie” I hear people say, “I can only draw basic shapes and stick figures!” Well to that I say good because that’s what I’m doing too!
Tumblr media
For drawing action, it’s crucial to capture the energy of the character. And in a style like Rise’s energy is an iconic trait. So I’ve re-invented this “shape method” to actually be useful. The number one thing is that these shapes are loose guides as to the positioning of the body. Don’t think of these shapes as “well chests are like cubes and arms are like rectangles.” These shapes are place holders. I could replace those circles with stars and it wouldn’t change anything. I just use circles because they’re faster to scribble and stand out against the hard angles of everything else.
Tumblr media
Here’s a picture of the shapes overlayed on the image, as you see, these shapes are guides to help comprehend a complex angle in 3D space. Sadly I don’t have much I can assist with on proportions, since I learned purely by studying total uncreepily real life people and myself (I swear I’m posing in the mirror for purely educational reasons! Okay!?).
But anyway, for this kind of thing, practice is the only remedy. Just draw action pose after action pose. Trace scenes from ROTTMNT and the movie to teach your eye to see what things should look like and to train your brain to recognize patterns of shapes and angles.
I hope you found this at all helpful. I’m not really sure how great of a teacher I am but people keep asking questions like these so I guess I’m okay. Glad you liked ROTP so much and I’m glad it made such a good impression on you! ^v^
Good question! :]

Also wondering what dpi or canvas size do you use? When I post my art the quality downgrades alot
Usually 300dpi because it's pretty much the standard print setting, I open canvas size with length and width around 2100~2400 pixels. Often 2100 x 2400, 2200 x 2400.
Sometimes websites would downgrade the art it's because of the Wifi loading efficiency, it can back to the normal clarity. At least that's what I had experienced on Twitter/X and Instagram.

Hello! I don't mean this in a malicious way at all, so I hope that it doesn't come off as such, but I think you should try to draw bigger noses. You've been making a handful of the That's Not My Neighbor characters' noses a lot smaller than they should be (in my opinion) and that can come off as a pretty insulting thing.
The ones that you have drawn were definitely good! And I can tell you were trying for the ones that were more in your style and not trying to mimic the game, but when the game has "big nose" as one of the notable features for a character, it feels like you should try and keep that feature, you know?
Your art is very cute and typically very pretty, but making the noses smaller feels like a very superficial move, which I'm assuming in good faith that that wasn't your intent.
Again, I hope this doesn't come off wrong and that I worded it well. I hope you have a good morning/night/whatever time of day that you see this! You're genuinely one of my favourite genderbend artists so I very much enjoy seeing your posts!
It's fine anon, I understand what you mean. Even I myself think that I'm not doing much justice to the original characters' features (especially if it's listed on their profile) 😅😅
Actually I do try to draw some of the noses bigger, but usually I draw heads and other features that aren't importantly specified in their profiles in my usual style, so when it combines, the output looks....very uncanny. (i spent hours on that fem izaack design cuz i was trying to find a way to make the big nose work)
So what I do to compensate is to just draw it as close as possible to the og but still within my drawing style (usually it ends up being too much in my style, so I'd like to apologize for that. I don't mean to say that I deliberately disregard the features like big noses but I apologize again if it's what it comes off as)
I know I should probably try to draw their head and other features the same way as the og to prevent it from looking uncanny, but I'm not too confident in my skills with cartoon-y stylization (i've been drawing art from a lot of anime-styled media way back and stuck to that style).
So to end, yes, I'll try to pay more attention to the important features, but hopefully you won't expect too highly of me (cuz I'd mostly go on autopilot and draw in the style I'm comfy with). Also I'm glad you like the designs of my genderswap versions. Thank you anon ❤️

How to Draw a Face!
For many, drawing a face can be very daunting and can seem very complicated. However, drawing a face can be a lot more simple than you'd think.
Here are a few simple tips to follow if you're just learning to draw a face. These are just some basics and as you get more confident you can change up features and alter proportions to your liking. Not everyone looks the same and facial features can vary greatly.
Start with a circle
This circle will help provide you with baseline info on proportioning the features of the face. From the circle you can extend two lines downward and connect them with a flat u shape.
Tumblr media
Add some Lines
These lines will help guide the facial features.
Tumblr media
Draw some eyes and ears
When drawing ears, sort of go in with the mindset of two C's. And for the eyes think of incomplete ovals.
Tumblr media
Finishing it off!
Just add some circles to the inside of the eyes. You also can add some details to the ears if you'd like. The eyebrows may take some trial and error but you've got it!
Tumblr media
Random details :D
Just go ahead and erase the horizontal lines and now you have a complete face! Congratulations!with step 10, I added some shading and hair. As well as a neck just to make it feel more complete.
Tumblr media
Next post I'll provide a few examples of alterations that can be done to change up your character and make them your own. Hope this helped. :D

i know i've posted several skeles and monsters that i've drawn, but i've only seriously drawn Sans Undertale, the classic bone man (my version of him is nicknamed Vanilla) once. and i reuse it a lot because it's my best drawing of him, but i feel like... i shouldn't do that, because that drawing wasn't JUST of Sans, and i probably won't be posting it anytime soon, if ever.

How do you do hair so well? (specifically Raph’s hair in your mutation situation comic)
Hair, okay. I guess I don’t really think about it much, but I think I can make a little tutorial.
Tumblr media
Alright, here’s a sketch. I’ve got a clear picture of where the most important points are, his forehead, his ear, and the crown of his head.
Tumblr media
For me, I don’t have to do this step because I’ve drawn hair so many times, I just know where the hairline is, but for the sake of seeing what I see, I’ve drawn the hairline in red.
Pretty rough honestly, if the character had a buzz cut, I’d probably tweak a few things, but it’s just a rough outline. Anyway, it’s important to use the important points I mentioned above to not only draw the hairline, but also for the next step.
Tumblr media
Now that I know where his hair is going to be, I can draw it. Raph would have bangs like his brothers, but his headband presses them up into spikes. I usually just make the spikes in a general randomized size, though a pattern I tend to follow starting at the origin point on the side of the character’s head is:
little, big, big, little, medium, little, little
Idk why, I guess I just gravitate towards that pattern.
Tumblr media
Something important to keep in mind when drawing hair is the direction in which it will naturally want to flow. I think at first this is tricky to understand and predict, kinda like a water splat, but the more you draw hair, the more you start to see the patterns.
Tumblr media
Some basic rules about the flow of hair are that everyone has one or two “origin points.” My mom calls them swirlies. These are the little spots on the back/side of your head that is where the hair spikes out. Girls probably never knew about these or had to deal with them unless you’ve had really short hair before. For boys, this is the spot where they get the most annoying cowlicks. Keep in mind that hair spirals out from this point. However where this point is changes on every person, some people (like my brother) have two.
Tumblr media
Another rule is that if someone has what’s called a “widow’s peak” then their hair will always part in the center and have puff a bit, I know because I have this 😭. People with a widow’s peak in their hair can’t have bangs that don’t part down the middle, naturally anyway. Their hair flows out from the center point as well as from the back. Not everyone has this, but it’s something to keep in mind :]
Tumblr media
Knowing these points of flow, I can now refine the rough drawing into something pretty. The lines I put in show the origins of the hair an the direction of flow.
I hope this was helpful! I don’t really think about this kind of thing a lot since for me, I’ve had almost every length of hair, so drawing this is more intuitive. I tried to explain the best I could what goes through my mind, so hopefully this helps you with your drawings!
Good question! :]

May i ask what program/app do you use to draw?
Procreate! And here are the brushes I use for line art regularly, they are the default brushes. I sometimes duplicate a few and modify them mainly for size and fluidity.
Tumblr media
Procreate from App Store
Tumblr media
Inking(original category)- Technical pen (had duplicates and modify for size and fluidity), I had put them into the Calligraphy brush category for easy access reason
Tumblr media
Sketching- 6B pencil (had duplicates and modify for size)
Tumblr media
Charcoals- 6B compressed (had duplicates and modify for size)

(I want to be secure to be myself without hiding a part that I think was unloveable and I want everyone to be happier than me even though if I'm having a bad day I want to hug and comfort other people because I love to make people smile, laugh and happy. .i also love to talk a lot and I deeply need someone to talk to without making a bored face because it make me felt sympathy to talk any more. .If only someone can listen to me and do the same I incredibly needs a hug and if someone hug me I think I will bawl into tears from joy (o´罒`o)♡. .)

Phinix, How do you draw your characters' bodies?
(I wanted some tips)
Alright I’m not the best at giving tips or advice on drawing, but this is my process.
Tumblr media
My best advice is just to practice. I know, I know. Everyone says just to practice. But it’s true.
I practice a lot. A LOT. Personally I haven’t liked my art style for a long time so I’m practicing drawing in a new style (see above). Especially making sure bodies are proportional, which I’ve always had trouble with.
Every person has their own way of drawing, I personally don’t like using the stick figure method, it looks weird to me. But a lot of people use that method and it works great for them.
Something helpful is just to go on *generic search engine* and just look up people. Pick one and take 10 seconds to draw the pose, messy as it is. Keep doing that and it will get easier and easier. And it significantly improves your posing and understanding of anatomy.
Remember true perfection doesn’t exist (except in Stardew Valley)
Practice makes Improvement. And everyone is constantly improving.
And if you’re having a hard time drawing, just draw rats. Just trust me on this one.
