So, I was thinking about something in LOK.
You know the Earth Queen Hou-Ting? You know, the woman who secluded airbenders and that Zaheer killed?
Tumblr media
This one?
Well, as you all may know, she’s King Kuei’s only daughter.
I’m sure you all remember King Kuei, the puppet king with the bear.
Tumblr media
This guy.
Well, I made some calculus. He must’ve been in his early/mid 20s in ATLA. And his daughter had to be in her 50s/early 60s when she died.
In the meantime, Zuko is 87/88 in 171AG, when LOK3 takes place. Since his daughter is commonly believed to be around Bumi and Kya’s age, I’d speculate that she’s around 60 in her appearance in LOK4, in 174AG and when Zuko is 90 (Tenzin is 51 in 170AG and Kya is roughly 4 years older than him, so Izumi must be between 5 and 7 years older than him, which places her in a range between 60 and 62 years old).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(See? Roughly the same age)
So, my point? I think during their diplomatic visits, Zuko and Kuei had to spend a lot of time in each other’s company because, monarch stuff. And given that they were both heirs to their respective thrones, Izumi and Hou-Ting had to spend a lot of time together.
I don’t know why, but I imagine those two having the wildest, silliest yet most hateful beef as teens. And given Hou-Ting’s despicable behavior and authoritarian politic in contrast to what shown of Izumi, a rational leader who cares for her people, I am even more convinced that those two despised each other.
So yeah, I can’t stop picturing Izumi and Hou-Ting insulting the crap out of each other while saving face in front of the subjects. And I can’t stop laughing

Avatar Legend of Korra What If…
So I’m watching reaction videos on YouTube of lok and it made me rewatch season 4 specifically. So I did and I’m currently watching a reaction to book 3 episode 3 and it’s the scene where Korra meets the Earth Queen and she demands the avatar around like it’s nothing, so what if Korra had atla length storytelling au where they have a fight in the throne room because Korra stood up to her and the queen is lowkey kickass af and can fight like on some elite earth nation combat and they tussle then the dai li are there, shit they probably initiated the fight anyway
We could have more scenes of the Korra Gang like we got to experience for Gaang so we could get some nice beefy character developments for everyone especially our beloved Mako
It would interesting to imagine shit like that tho because I made a head canon that the Queen is a firebender come to find out, and that has some much lore by itself it’d be awesome
I’m high af btw.

Over the weekend, I had the inspiration to go out and forage some plant material around my neighbourhood, which I left to dry in the sun. Thereafter, a quick brew in sunflower oil, some beeswax and muttered prayers, I created my first handmade devotional candle to my spirit neighbours. An idea I wanted to try for months, and finally could. I invited all the local spirits and guardians to partake in the offerings, and read many prayers and poems to the Goddess of the Earth. On my way back to the house, I almost walked into a female Emperor Dragonfly, resting on the cypress tree in my back garden. A thing of beauty, about the size of my palm, and seemingly a perfect representative of the Earth Queen. Hopefully a good omen that my offerings were well received!

What does Kaz think of the Earth Queen?
Great question!
I’ve never really thought about this. I suppose they may have met at some point, but not necessarily. At minimum I’m sure he was aware of her reputation as a nightmare of a person and it made him grateful for Izumi lol.
As for her assassination I’m sure he thought it was completely idiotic. As someone who appreciates order, chaotic anarchists would annoy the shit out of him.

Atla - villains and there seven deadly sins
Here’s an essay of a specific set of ATLA villains with a possible primary sin that they identify with. Let me know if you agree with my list or suggest an atla villain that I haven’t listed and associate him/her with one of the sins that best fits.
Unalaq = Lust: Particularly, the lust for power. Unalaq’s motives are arguably the most monstrous but also kinda confusing. As he states, he spend his life studying the spirits and learning their ways. He’s mostly acts cold and unfazed, the only time he takes joy on anything, it’s him inflicting horrendous and savage misery on others and he seems to take a little too much enjoyment with his merger with Vaatu. He can't seem to stand the idea of someone having power that he doesn't which is the main reason he hates his brother, who was to become chief of the North Pole and later fathered the Avatar, and is implied to be one reason why he merged with Vaatu. It’s likely that Vaatu’s the one who got into Unalaq’s head because Unalaq, at times, acts less of a right-hand man more of a mindless minion. It helps that the color-scheme of his cloths matches that of the associated color of lust.
Zhao = Gluttony: Zhao’s motives are for the sake of eternal glory and worship. He easily gets higher rankings and is addicted to the destructive power of firebending, caring little for the temperance to control it and the fact fire itself can consume anything its path is reason enough for him to believe fire is the superior element.
Kuvira = Greed: She stems far off from her intended position and sought to take as much control and wealth as possible. She becomes obsessed with loyalty to the point she sets up “education camps” for those who are disloyal. As Kuvira's powerbase builds up, she shows signs of megalomania and a power trip.
Zuko = Envy: Yes I know he joins the heroes later on but his motives from when he was a villain are reason enough to list him. In his monologue with Aang, he reflects of a “perfect life” Azula has and how everything came easy to her and is beloved by all. It’s easy to understand that Zuko is very jealous of Azula to the point he views her as an ever-lying competition. Ozai inflicted so much hurt and misfortune, as opposed to Zuko’s view of Azula having it easy that he uses her as an excuse, her blames her for every bad thing that’s happened to him, Iroh never really helped ease his envy and to think he of all people would understand the dangers of envy. Even when Zuko saw the light, is bettering himself and calls Ozai out for his mistreatment, he still doesn’t understand what she’s been through or she’s done for him, still trying to compete against Azula and will take the moral high-ground to justify it.
Earth Queen = Wrath: She can barely go two seconds without yelling at her subordinates for the pettiest of reasons. EQ is impatient, has a short-fuse, is an overbearing perfectionist and that fact he’ll put Korra on the most wanted list liberating airbenders that weren’t hers to keep shows she can hold a grudge. She’s basically a temper tantrum, ager issue riddled child with some inspiration from the queen of hearts, and maybe Geoffrey.
Azula = Sloth: Her viewpoint is very simple, the fire nation are the good guys who deserve to take over the world and if you refused to obey or betray them in anyway, it’s all on you and you deserve to be punished. To be forced to confront complicated and gray situations was too difficult for her to grasp and she starts losing it. She has a degree of leadership skills but she’s more comfortable being second in command than a full on top dog. Azula wasn’t that impressed that she got to be fire lord, just another another job to do, and she was clearly WAY in over head before she even got the crown. She also seems to rely heavily on her status as prodigy and never thought she’d have to work to hard, that’s how Katara managed to beat her almost twice despite Azula having some combat training. In Smoke and shadow, Azula has a cooler head now that she accepted that Zuko’s on the throne and doing all the heavy lifting but will try to force some pointers on him to help him be the fire lord she’s used to working for. I don't buy that Azula was able to orchestrate everything that goes on in smoke and shadow by herself given her mental chaos in the search, someone else has to be pulling the strings from deeper in the shadows. given that Ozai is the only one to have an affect on her, is the only one she's fanatically loyal to, is the one who nearly tricked Zuko into restarting the war, her and Ozai speaking privately under Azula's request, and her whole plan is clearly Ozai themed despite him not being physically involved. It would make sense to me if Ozai's behind it all.
Ozai = Pride: Fittingly so and not completely without justification. He’s has overpowering ambition and indomitable will. He enjoys power and will only ally with the most powerful with self-control to match but not submit to them. He’s proven himself to be a very competent ruler, he can (mostly) take criticisms and became powerful enough to where only a fully realized master avatar can stop this titan. Pride being the worst of all sins makes him, naturally, one of the worst of all villains, he’s cold and distant, even towards his own family and is willing to kill even them if they got in the way of his ambitions. Like all egotistical blowhards, he underestimated a 12 year old and paid the ultimate price. He was barley phased by the fact that his bending was stolen away by said twelve year old and is level-headed enough to almost trick Zuko into restarting the war. He fools Azula on a constant basis who she herself is no stranger to psychology and deceit. In an AU of mine, where Vaatu manipulates Sozin into starting the war through his subconsciousness and Ozai is the dark avatar instead of Unalaq, with all elements plus energybending, all sub-bendings and all non-bender skills. I picture Ozai and Vaatu being the same person instead of Ozai having to fuse with Vaatu, his dark power depletes and only harmonic convergence can bring it back. Reasons for all this is Ozai and Vaatu are very prideful characters, it wouldn’t make much sense for Ozai to submit to anyone and that would diminish his established role as the primary antagonist in Aang’s saga.

A single rose head fell off the bouquet given to my mother for her birthday, which turned out to be a convenient offering to the Earth Queen. Also featuring a birchwood idol of the Lady of the Woods I hand-carved a couple of years ago. Here at the edge of the forest, bordered by comfrey (which the bees adore) I feel like I gained some inspiration to reflect on for the future.
