The Economic Hitman: Friend or Foe to Developing Nations?
Tumblr media
Imagine a world where seemingly helpful experts convince countries to take on massive debts for fancy new infrastructure. Sounds good, right? But what if these projects benefit foreign companies more than the locals, leaving the country drowning in debt? This is the story of the economic hitman.
Who are they?
Economic hitmen aren't your typical assassins. They're consultants, often working for big banks or international organizations. Their job? Persuade developing countries to borrow huge sums of money for things like dams, power plants, and highways.
The Pitch:
These consultants paint a rosy picture. They promise economic booms, job creation, and a brighter future. But the reality is often different.
Tumblr media
The Hidden Costs:
Crushing Debt: Countries get stuck with massive loans they can't repay, diverting money from healthcare, education, and other crucial needs.
Broken Promises: Many projects fail to deliver on their promises, leaving local communities worse off than before.
Environmental Damage: Dams and other mega-projects can harm ecosystems and displace people from their homes.
Is there hope?
Yes! We can hold these "hitmen" accountable by:
Demanding transparency: Shining a light on how these deals are made and who benefits.
Investing responsibly: Supporting projects that truly benefit local communities and the environment.
Speaking up: Raising awareness about the dangers of unsustainable debt and unfair development practices.
Tumblr media
Remember:
Economic hitmen operate in the shadows, but their impact is real. By being informed and engaged, we can help developing countries avoid the debt trap and build a brighter future for themselves.
Let's keep the conversation going! Share your thoughts on economic hitmen and how we can create a fairer development system in the comments below.

People seem to think this is fake because it's written in English. Apart from the racism in believing that Arab doctors and nurses aren't fluent in English (a second or official language for half of Asia), Palestinians have deliberately been addressing their audience in English on every social media, from journalists to children, because they know speaking English to Westerners immediately makes people more human in their eyes. Because language is one of the ways the imperial cultural hegemony conditions us (yes, everyone in the world) to see who qualifies as "people" and who are simply a mass of bodies who were always made to suffer and die. Gazans know this deeply, which is why they have been using English to beg and plead through social media, "We're not numbers! We're not numbers! We're people like you, we speak your language, we deserve to live!" all the while they're systematically slaughtered.

Israeli forces also encircled Al Shifa Hospital yesterday and bombed it for several hours while shooting dead anyone trying to flee including medical staff moving between buildings. Not sure whether it's still continuing because WHO lost all communications with its staff there a few hours after. The last new report said that thirty-nine babies had been removed from the incubators before the power went out. It's extremely unlikely they will survive.
Please understand that these atrocities depend on the war of attrition between governments and public attention. The momentum of public outcry is difficult to sustain through repeated stonewalling and bureaucratic intractability. When we're flooded with these reports and a sense of futility and despair replaces the anger, it allows compassion fatigue to set in and the violence to become normalized. Massacring hospitals, killing sick children and openly targeting humanitarian aid workers (Netanyahu just declared the UNRWA is in league with Hamas) will become simply more news articles that fade into the background, and open genocides will soon become part of the "lesser evil".
Take care of yourselves how you can, take distance where needed, but please never tune out and give up on the two million people for whom we are the only witness and hope. Never stop boosting and sharing the news and posts you find, never stop getting out there and joining every protest you can, however small. Anger burns out, which is why activism must depend on an immovable sense of justice and uncompromising value for human life. It's not just about Gaza, it's about the kind of evil our generation will be coerced into accepting as unchangeable and inevitable hereafter.

Yeah I'm not done yet.
The thing I keep coming back to is that as much as I'm down to nit-pick things like how characters are written and plot details (and boy are there a whole infestation of nits to pick), what it boils down to is that the basic premise here shouldn't even be happening.
I get they're doing a Thing with Bruce and the after effects of Failsafe and Zur and Insomnia so sure I guess it makes sense to have him acting totally unreasonably. I'm not saying it's a plotline I'm thrilled with, but whatever. This is about everyone else.
You have half a dozen people routinely patrolling in Gotham, who've been doing it for years, who know the city and how it works, who have at least two people who are particularly inclined towards collecting and parsing data for patterns for crime fighting purposes, and none of you noticed anything amiss until Selina called and was like "Hey did you notice my neat new plan I've been doing?"
To that point, in a room full of literal canonical geniuses not a single person has thought to ask any of a dozen very practical questions that occurred to me, a non-genius reader, roughly 10 seconds after reading what The Plan was. Things like, oh, I don't know
How is this going to be a sustainable long-term effort?
For example, what happens when Gotham's wealthiest realize what you're doing and dramatically beef up their security (with tech or with actual people), making it much harder and more dangerous?
Like iirc you, Selina, have definitely had some real dicey situations as a result of your profession, and you're a lot more experienced than these people.
(Hey speaking of which isn't there a whole secret society of Gotham's wealthiest and most powerful who have access to nearly unkillable assassins? Who keeps coming back even though they keep being taken down? You think any of these people might belong to that?)
What happens when the rich folks get pissed and sic the heavily militarized GCPD on you? Don't act like they won't, I'm sure someone's squirreled away stuff from that whole Fear State fiasco.
For that matter, what happens when the costumed villainry figure out who swiped all their henchpeople and decide to object to it, presumably violently?
How many people are we talking here anyway that you're training? How many ultra-wealthy people live in Gotham? How many easily stealable things do they have sitting around to take? (As opposed to, like, other non-liquid fake assets like stocks)
How are you fencing all this anyway? Isn't that a great way to get caught? Or is everyone just stealing cash? (Or did nobody think about the part between "got the valuable thing" and "have usable money from it"?)
How on god's green earth did you ever assume this was going to end in anything other than violence?
Like of course one of your guys got killed. It doesn't matter that you told them no violence, even if they fully buy into that it only takes one panicked reaction when someone's home who shouldn't be, on either side, and there you go.
Look I get what they're trying to do. It's supposed to be a big moral quandary about whether it's right to allow some crime if it decreases other crime, the struggle between Batman being unreasonably violent and unwilling to listen and this new plan of Selina's. First of all that's a weird debate to have when everyone having it is technically a criminal to some degree. And second of all, it doesn't matter, this isn't about the morality, this is about how this plan is fucking dumb and was destined to fall apart even if Batman was still asleep and the fact that any of you are buying it just means there's a gas leak in Gotham somewhere.

So to recap where we are now: after murdering more UN workers than any conflict in its history has claimed in the same period of time, these terrorist howler monkeys, with the full backing of Western governments, are establishing a justification so that no international aid worker in an active war zone will ever be safe again. Because setting the precedent of bombing hospitals, Red Crescent ambulances, medics, journalists and UN aid workers was nowhere near enough.
Oh and also the Biden-Blinken State Department is picking up where Trump-Pompeo left off and refusing to acknowledge the Geneva Convention.
This while we're teetering on the brink of wars between several nuclear powers most of whom are aligned with each other (Iran-Israel/US, Russia-NATO).
Anyone who isn't terrified right now is an idiot.
