Have you seen this post and thought: “That’s all well and good Karan, but what’s the actual difference between a response and a reaction, aren’t they just the same thing?” Well, technically yes, a response is a reaction of sorts. However, when you respond you take the time to pause and consider the desired outcome. A response leads to a thoughtful engineering of the result you want. Conversely, a reaction tends to be more immediate, emotionally driven and can lead to either a positive or negative outcome; it’s more of a gamble. When you respond you’re implementing your emotional intelligence. When you react… not so much, because you’ve allowed your agitated ego to take over and drive your decisions. Indulging your ego can often be exorbitant, so it’s beneficial to recognise when it’s rearing its ugly head and neutralise it quickly — I’m here if you’d like some help with that. In the meantime — and just for today if the challenge feels too big right now — take responding out for a test drive, quell any urge to react, and note your results at the end of the day. Then, if you like those results, buy into the principle for good and watch your life unfold in a more positive manner.
