#feral zuko au

Text
I don’t think anyone has fully considered the potential of a feral zuko au.
Like, Ozai tries to kill him when he’s 10, but zuko escapes with a scar, Ozai claims he was killed by an assassin and Azula gets a redemption arc early.
Meanwhile zuko is off completely changing the corse of history by, in no particular order:
-Making Hama realize that not all fire benders are bad cause the child she just told about how she was in prison immediately his to instigate a jail break
-is emotionally adopted by hakoda along with most of the crew
-finds wan shi tong’s library
-befriends/is adopted by June the bounty hunter
-discovers a herd of flying bison
-joins a traveling acting troupe for a while cause he’s a theater nerd
-visits omashu and is forcibly befriended by bumi, who decides that zuko is now his grandson and no one can stop him
-discovers the white lotus, decides that they don’t do shit, and starts a hobby of breaking into their safe houses and wrecking them until they get off their asses and help with the war
-meets toph when some fire nation soldiers chase him to gaoling and she stops them, and her parents see her, but zuko does this little speech about how proud they must be of their daughter and how much they must trust and respect her since she’s such a powerful earth bender, and basically guilt trips them into letting toph continue to fight and practice bending
-gets a dragon tattoo
-wanders into the swamp at some point
-drinks a bit more than he probably should, but he can hold it shockingly well
-figures out lightning bending in the middle of a thunderstorm
-goes to ba sing se, gets arrested by the Dai li, breaks out, and starts a one man war with them, which basically is just zuko par core-ing around the city till he finds some Dai li, then rather beats the shit out of them, or just kill them.
-He does it all with out fire bending though, just his swords.
-After like a week the Dai li are basically gone, and the earth king finds out about the war, and makes zuko a part of the army, some fancy title and a medal or something, zuko is officially recognized as the dragon of the east, and proceeds to duck off to the North Pole to try and convince them to help in the war
-they don’t want to, but he befriends yue and they talk about politics and zuko helps her get out of the arranged marriage
-zuko called Paku a sexist bitch and is surprised yet delighted to inform him that blood bending was invented by a woman
-invents lightning redirection
-the north joins the war thanks to yue
-zuko meets the mechanist at the northern air temple at some point
-meets and joins the freedom fighters, makes out with jet, uses fire bending to save jets like, then jet tries to kill him
-the other kids understand that zuko is still good even though he’s a fire bender, but zuko leaves, even though every single kid adopted zuko as their older brother
-becomes known as the greatest swords man to ever live
-it’s actually true, and when piandao, who has Ali adopted zuko, hears that he is very proud and brags about it to everyone he meets
-basically zuko gets adopted by almost every adult he meets
-gets really good at cooking, hunting, reading maps, finding water, pick pocketing, stowing away on beats, sewing, and pretty much every other skill you would need to live on your own.
-hears that Zhao has captured the avatar and casually breaks Aang out of prison
-refuses to be his firebending teacher and leaves
-stops at a village to tell them that the volcano next to them is about to explode, and he knows this cause he grew up in the fire nation which has a lot of volcanos
-they don’t believe him cause the fortune teller never said anything about it, zuko gets pissed and starts yelling at them
-this is the exact moment Aang Katara and sokka show up
-zuko thinks Aang is following him and tries to leave, but sokka recognizes him as the dragon of the east from a wanted poster
-they basically follow zuko around trying to convince him to help them, and he is this close to just beating them up when Katara mentions they are going to the northern water tribe to learn bending
-zuko agrees to go with them just so he can see Katara kick paku’s ass
-obviously zuko and sokka get together at some point
-when the gaang finds joung joung zuko makes fun of him cause zuko was there when he broke up with piandao cause he was afraid of being found out (cause being gay was illegal) and piandao kicked his ass even though he’s a non bender
Meanwhile Azula thinks she could have prevented zukos death somehow, maybe helped him with his fire bending or hadn’t bullied him so much or something.
Ozai kind of focused on her more and started to look down on her a lot more cause he couldn’t compare her to zuko. He put a lot more pressure on her and it drove her away from him, she started seeking his approval less and less, instead growing closer to her mom and uncle. Her mom was constantly worried she would screw up and Azula would die too, but she was Ali scared of making her think she was trying to replace zuko. But by being rather open with Azula about that it never really became an issue.
Azula took up sword fighting and trained with piandao and she got a lot of character growth from that, cause she wasn’t naturally good at it and really had to work hard. Piandao was not someone she could bully or manipulate, so she had to struggle with earning someone’s approval.
Piandao told her at some point that sword fighting was not something that came naturally to anyone, and you had to work hard your whole life to be really good. He also said zuko was the fastest learner and best student he had ever taught. Piandao believed that zuko could have easily surpassed piandao himself within a few years.
Azula gets to go to the war meeting that zuko got banished at in the show, she also says the plan is wrong, but in a much more eloquent way that doesn’t dishonor the fire lord but does dishonor the general. She fights an Agni Kai against the general and wins.
The plan is done anyway, (zuko finds that message and is able to warn both the earth kingdom troops and the squad of fire nation soldiers that where going to die, it starts the rumor that the dragon of the east is actually prince zuko and it spreads, some solders start to rebel against their commanders in the name of the prince) Azula finds out about it much later and raises all kinds of hell over it, calling Ozai an “honorless coward who betrays his people, unworthy of the throne” to his face in front of a bunch of people.
Azula gets banished for it, Iroh comes with her and she’s now basically zuko from the show, but tasked with finding and capturing the dragon of the east to prove her loyalty instead of the avatar. At this point she does not know that it’s zuko.
She finds zuko didn’t recognize him and fights him, but he’s better than her, and then she sees the knife that Iroh have zuko just before he “died” and puts two and two together and comes up with seven. She thinks the dragon of the east is the assassin that killed her brother.  It kind of makes sense, if the assassination was his first act of rebellion, cause a string of jail breaks followed.
I’m not really sure where the story could go after that but there’s a lot of potential for an invasion, since zuko knows so many people. Imagine them all showing up to help and they’re all like “oh hey zuko” and the gaang turns to zuko and ask how he knows them and he’s just like “that’s my mom/dad” and it just makes them more confused.

A Dramatic snippet from TPLG's chapter 12
Your mother, Lady Ursa.
How dare he give him hope like that?
If Zuko had hated him before, it was nothing compared to how he felt towards the man now. As the shock subsided he felt white-hot rage replace it. He picked up the piece of wood again and stalked up to the kneeling man, pressing it into his chest with a trembling hand.
“You’re lying,” he whispered.
The man dragged his eyes up from the wood until they locked with Zuko’s, and shook his head slowly.
“Believe me,” he murmured. “Your mother—”
“Want to know how I know you're lying?” Zuko said louder, drowning him out. He could barely hear himself over the blood roaring in his ears. “You’re telling me exactly what I want to hear.”
For some unfathomable reason, the man looked stricken.
“But it’s the truth,” he said hoarsely. Zuko tightened his grip on the wood and bared his teeth. “She knew this would happen! That’s why — that’s why she made us memorise this, should one of us find you…”
He trailed off and his face scrunched up with concentration, his gaze turning inwards.
Zuko felt himself twitch. He wouldn’t fall for whatever garbage this guy was about to spew, he wouldn’t —

Prompt: Azula joins Zuko on his Avatar hunt instead of Iroh. I don't know why, I don't know how, but I'm certain to be entertained by whatever follows.
Ozai and Ursa were already dead by the time Iroh arrived home. He stepped from his ship into the palanquin, and rode past the places of their execution, holding the urn of his son’s ashes.
He had no time to entrust them to the Fire Sages before his father summoned him. He brought them along, because this was an easier thing than setting them down. And perhaps Lu Ten’s grandfather would like to see him once more, outside of the family shrine. Iroh would have given anything—
He placed the urn on the floor next to him. It did not kneel when he did. Fire Lord Azulon surveyed him from behind the flames.
“Rise, my son. It is good to have you home.”
They did not speak of Lu Ten. His father had always been a man to look to the flames of the future, rather than the ashes of the past.
* * *
They hanged Ursa, as befitted her attempted crime, and her past station.
They burned Ozai, as befitted his. A child of Agni should always return to the flames.
The children of the traitors had been stricken from the family line. Had been placed in the capital prison; bait for the trap. Azulon was keeping close eye on those who expressed concern for the offspring of regicides. Ozai had expected support for his position; it would be Iroh’s second task to sift through the court, and discard the chaff.
His first task was a more practical resowing. Azulon had already selected a handful of candidates: women of suitable birth and known loyalties. The wedding date had been set, pending selection of the bride.
“Thank you, father,” Iroh said.
Lu Ten held his silence.
* * *
Azula had never liked the servants who’d fussed at her hair and clothes, who’d pulled and tugged until she was perfect, like perfect was a thing outside of her for others to bestow. She only had to look at Zuko to know how far tailored robes and well-oiled hair could take one.
She couldn’t see Zuzu from her cell. Her robes were too cold against the stone and every tug to wrap them tighter just made them worse, she could see it in the guards’ faces, the way they’d stared when she’d first arrived and looked a few days after and now they barely even saw. No one would talk to her, no matter her demands. They didn’t even stop their own conversations anymore; just slid in her food and kept walking and batted away her fires and it was cold here.
There were things crawling in her hair that her nails couldn’t dig out. Sometimes she thought she heard Zuzu yelling, but she couldn’t be sure. And it would have been undignified to yell back. She was a princess. She was fifth in line for the dragon throne.
Fourth, now that Lu Ten was dead.
Third, because father was, too.
He’d yelled and then he’d screamed and it hadn’t done anything but make the crowd jeer. Fire Lord Azulon had been silent. Poised. In control. She was his namesake and she would be too.
She was nine.
* * *
Zuko yelled until his throat burned. The guards didn’t care, they didn’t listen to him, which was nothing new. He shouted and shouted and his own ears hurt. Maybe that’s why he never heard Azula calling back.
Grandfather had made them watch when he’d killed father and, and—
If grandfather had Azula killed, he would have made Zuko watch that, too. Azula was probably just better at being a prisoner than he was. Maybe the guards even talked to her.
He was eleven.
* * *
Iroh’s new wife was a third his age. A flower just coming to bloom. She looked like his first wife; Azulon knew his preferences. She was young enough to be Lu Ten’s sister. She smiled and laughed each day with the other court wives, and came to his room with lists of possible dissenters to discuss in their marital bed. It was not the pillow talk he was used to, but it was charming, in its way. She liked to lay on her stomach and kick her feet above her as they traced the web of treachery with his dead brother at its center. She was here to have his children—a task at which she worked with admirable diligence—and to be the acting Fire Lady. She had not had to struggle and flaunt herself for his affections; she had been picked from a line-up, her expectations realistic, her motives aligned with his. It was the least romantic relationship Iroh had ever been part of. It was… refreshing.
On the day the palace doctor confirmed their newly budded line of succession, the Fire Lord called them both in for congratulations. And for pruning.
* * *
Zuko had turned twelve, but had not realized it. Azula had turned ten. She’d counted the days.
Iroh had not been able to visit them in prison; only to inquire as to their treatment. Individual cells, regular meals of reasonable quality, no abuses. He’d moved his own people into position to ensure the last.
Azulon had moved them back, after a delay for his soft-hearted son’s conscience. They could not waste loyal men on cuckoo-vipers. And Iroh could not waste his father’s good will. Not when it would be needed in the future, for the most important request.
* * *
“And your wife agrees to this?” asked the Fire Lord, behind his flames.
Iroh’s wife had not been directly addressed, and so did not reply. She sat in polite and perfect seiza, her head raised, as befitted the woman currently running her half of the court. Azulon had never seen fit to replace his own wife, after all.
“She does,” Iroh spoke for her. “We have spoken on the issue at length, and believe it best. Our family is small, and cannot afford to be smaller. The children are young; too young to have been in their parents’ confidences. With proper guidance—”
“And how would they place in the line of succession?” Azulon asked. “How would they chafe, how would they plot, with a decade’s experience over your eldest?”
Lu Ten’s own connections at court had been built while his cousins were still in diapers. But he was no longer Iroh’s eldest.
“We believe—”
“No,” his father interrupted again. “I will not allow their adoption. Not by you, where they could smother your own babe in the cradle, and certainly not by someone I trust less.”
Which was everyone, since the night his daughter-in-law had served him tea sent by his son.
“Father,” Iroh began, and his wife shifted her elbow just so, the only indication that she wished to dig it into his ribcage. “They are young, and innocent. They are my beloved nephew and niece. Your grandchildren. We cannot in good conscience—”
‘Good conscience’ had never factored into his father’s policies. Iroh had… begun to realize that, of late. His wife let out a small sigh, deliberately audible only to the man next to her. She had cautioned very strongly against a—how had she put it?—a feelings-based approach to this situation. Feelings rarely factored into her own decisions. She had been hand-selected by his father, after all.
His wife went into a half-bow, her head lowered. “May I speak, my lord?”
The flames crackled. The shadow of his father inclined its head, just slightly.
“To kill the children is wise, and I admit, would set my mind at ease for my own child’s sake. But my husband feels strongly on this matter, and so I support him, for his happiness is my own. May I suggest a compromise? To place them outside the court, where they cannot build influence, nor harm your son’s heirs. A position from which you can judge their characters and value to the nation as they grow.”
“You suggest banishment,” the Fire Lord said.
“Not unstructured, of course. To leave them roaming freely would invite those that would take them in. Perhaps a military commission? As they are commoners, they should begin from a rank befitting their station, of course. Let them prove their worth on their own merit.”
Iroh could not see through the flames, but he knew his wife’s small smile was reflected on his father’s face.
“A naval position,” the Fire Lord said. “On a ship that does not frequently make port. The frontlines would be the best place for them to prove themselves, wouldn’t you agree?”
Iroh closed his eyes.
“Father,” he said. “Please,” and he could feel his wife willing him to stop talking. The Fire Lord had already agreed to spare their lives. A banishment could be undone, so long as he and the children both outlived the man before them. “I… thank you for your wisdom in this ruling. But perhaps, if they complete some feat worthy of our line, they could be allowed to return?”
The flames were hot against his face. His new wife was still and silent against his side. His father… his father laughed, a low exhalation, the wheeze of a humorless old man.
“Let them bring me the Avatar,” Fire Lord Azulon said, “and I will welcome them home with honor.”
* * *
Zuko didn’t know why they’d pulled him from his cell or scrubbed him down or taken his old clothes. They’d been dirty but they could have been cleaned. His new clothes were scratchy, and too big, and they looked like a common soldier’s, and… and—
And they’d shaved his hair.
* * *
It had gotten rid of the bugs, Azula admitted, in the privacy of her own mind. Still. She memorized the faces of the woman who’d held her down and the man who’d shorn her. For future reference.
They hadn’t bothered sizing her new outfit for a child. Azula noted the quartermaster’s face, as well.
* * *
They were put on a ship. It was the first time they’d seen each other in nearly a year.
Zuzu looked at her head, and wisely said nothing.
She raised an eyebrow at his, and graciously granted him the same.
It was hard to tell them apart. They had their mother’s face. And their father’s.
* * *
Their captain’s name was Zhao. He invited them to dinner in his private quarters, once the Fire Nation was behind them. Zuko fidgeted. Azula didn’t.
The captain spoke on how much potential he saw in them, under a commander who saw their true value.
Together, they could go far. Very far, indeed.
Azula smiled and said all the things she thought father would have said. Zuko scowled.
Zhao brushed over their arms with his own while reaching for things. He served them more when they said they were already full. He squeezed their shoulders when he brought them back to their rooms, which were next to his, even though the rest of the lower crewmen slept together in the same big cabin. Zuko scowled harder.
Azula was invited back. Zuko wasn’t.
* * *
Zhao was… Zhao wasn’t a good person.
“I know that, dum-dum. But do you want to stay banished forever?”
“Uncle said—”
“Uncle’s going to change his mind, when he has his own heir and a spare. We’re threats, Zuzu. And Zhao knows father’s old friends. He’s one of the smart ones.”
The dumb ones had already been executed.
“I… I think he wants to—to tie himself to the royal line.”
“Eww,” she said. “I’m ten. If he wants to get engaged, I’ll just break it when we’ve got the throne. It will be too late for him to retract his support, then.”
They’d barely left port before Zhao had made his first move. He didn’t seem like a man who waited.
Azula was ten, but Zuko was twelve. Being twelve was almost thirteen, which was almost a teenager, which was almost an adult, and adults understood things that ten year olds didn’t.
They had to get off this ship. They had to go home.
Zuko had to find the Avatar.

“Okay,” Sokka says, regrouping. “Izumi, that was wrong. We never punch people in the face.”
Izumi frowns.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” she says. “There are definitely some people who should be punched in the face.”
“No, there are not,” Sokka says.
“I can’t punch *Hitler* in the face?” she asks, incredulous.
“Hitler’s dead.”
“The dead should not be punched in the face,” Zuko says. “For spiritual reasons.”
“Just… no one,” Sokka says. “No punching in the face.”
Katara looks at them.
“The two of you really do share the one brain cell, don’t you.”
Sometimes a future I've already had before

Ok but power-hungry Ursa. The possibilities. Imagine an Ursa who had been given time to wallow in her small childhood town. Who had broken up with Ikem (let's be real, these two would not last in a marriage for two seconds), who has realized that she will never be anything but 'the granddaughter of Roku' always living in someone else's shadow, living in a so-called traitor's shadow. So when the royal family comes around saying that Ursa and Ozai have to get married so that they will have powerful heirs, she jumps at the opportunity, jumps at the chance to gain power.

You know I was thinking that my Firelord Bato AU was going to be fairly light hearted outside of some references to the fucked up shit the fire hazard siblings had gone through because of Ozai...
Anyway I just wrote a scene where Azula thinks a fire bender is going to burn Toph’s face during a fight and has a trauma flashback of watching Ozai burn Zuko in the Agni Kai and goes completely panic-wild, killing the dude threatening Toph and then a bunch of other fire nation soldiers by non-stop throwing lightning  to the point that she starts hurting herself and then Bato has to talk her down and she breaks down sobbing in his arms before Zuko and Toph come over and they have a big family hug with Azula in the middle and uh
I think this story is gonna end up angstier that I initially planned lol. I can promise that’ll have a happy ending tho haha

I was thinking about a Selkie!Zutara AU where Katara is a selkie and Zuko and his uncle just moved into this small, port town to open a tea shop. It’s kind of inspired by Song of the Sea, but mostly in it being a modern setting with no bending and the location being fairly cold, so the town gets some light snow.
Zuko still came from a bad homelife and is coping with his past trauma but is doing much better while working with his uncle and stuff. One day he goes to this secluded beach area just to have time for himself and to think, when he spots what looks to be a fur coat just laying behind some jagged rocks, semi-hidden in the sand. He notes its rather seal-looking pattern and is about to try and look for the owner when a shout catches his attention.
He looks over to the shoreline and just sees this bare ass naked woman straight up marching over to him, fuming, and before he can even fully process what the heck is happening-
She just socks him right in the face.
And promptly grabs back her seal coat while he’s still reeling over the hit. Once he’s gathered his bearing, he looks down to see her now wearing the coat and clutching it close to her body, glaring up at him in with malice and suspicion.
“Thought you could steal a selkie’s coat, did you?! Thought I’d just become your submissive, little housewife and have your pups, huh?! Jerk!”
And then she promptly turns on her heels and heads straight to the ocean, jumping in, and turning into her seal form to swim away. All while leaving poor Zuko to just stand there in confusion and dulled pain. Later he asks his uncle and some sailors what a selkie is and proceeds to come back the next time he sees her with some gifts of fish and tea as an apology to the offended selkie lady.

A Kya lived (but with some serious burns) AU.
Katara's relationship with the other characters?
In what way would this also affect Sokka?
Aang accidentally burning Katara?
Yon-Rha being alive or not,and Zuko and Katara hunting him down.
Depending on what ripple effect Kya being alive has on the series, what other changes do you think would impact things going forward?
Do you think kat*anng would still happen or zutara?
To answer your last question first, Kataang shouldn't have happened in general, so, no they absolutely don't happen here.
This would've been an extremely traumatic event for Kya, and I think she would become very protective of Katara. Sokka would have a complicated relationship with it because on the one hand, he'd get it, and he'd be very protective of Katara too (even more than he was in the show). On the other hand, I think it would very much read as favoritism to him, and he'd probably pull some very dangerous and stupid stunts in order to get his mother to fear for his life like she does for Katara's. I think instead of being sent off with well wishes, Katara would have to sneak away, and Sokka would come with her to protect her.
I think Zuko seeing the burns that Kya suffered would give him pause. He would still try to go in with all his bluster and bravado, but it would be a sight that would startle him. I think it would change the dynamic when he confronted Katara (does Katara get Kya's necklace here? I don't know. I could see it go either way). He might appeal to her desire to end the war instead, promising that once he got home and took back his rightful place, he'd make ending the war his priority so no one would have to suffer like Kya. His arc would then be centered on trying to reconcile what he knows of his father with his own hopes for how the war would end. I don't know if they still go after Yon Rah. I don't think it would have the same impact, to be honest. I think Katara's mother would be what bridges the gap between them still, but I think instead of focusing on their mutual loss, Katara would find out explicitly how Zuko got his scar and why. They would still connect over maternal sacrifices, but also the scars.
Katara, I think, would be the biggest change. I think she'd be a less maternal figure and less inclined to play caregiver to the people around her (which is part of the reason I don't think Kataang would happen). Her anger would be a lot more apparent because not only did her mother sacrifice herself for Katara, she treated her like she was too vulnerable to be let out into the world on her own (this version of Katara would probably have an easier time connecting with Toph, tbh). I think any attempts of people trying to protect her or tell her she can't do something would be met with much more force. Her fight with Pakku would've been much more feral and unhinged because I think she'd actually be out for blood. Like for real, for real. And her stint as the Painted Lady would probably end with a few dead soldiers. I see Zutara not only happening in this version of the story, but happening way sooner because Katara's anger would be easier for Zuko to see and understand, and then connect with. I think her pain and anger would hurt him for her sake, too. Getting to know her would make him finally understand everything Iroh was trying to do for him, and he would in turn try to be that for Katara. In the end, they'd both wind up helping each other find peace.
Also, as for what happened when Aang burned Katara? He'd have gotten a double barrel of anger from the siblings. Sokka would possibly lay hands on him, and Katara would resent him for not taking any of his learning opportunities seriously. I think Katara in this version would be much more militant (a reason why I don't think Aang would have a crush on her in this scenario to begin with). This episode would see him getting thee crap scared out of him, and possibly set him down the path of understanding just how badly the war needs to be ended.

Thinking about an au where Zuko grows up feral and embraces the blue spirit identity either because Ozai left him out in the woods as a child because he thought he didn't have the spark, or after Zuko is banished and a horrible disaster befalls his ship and crew. Feral blue spirit Zuko who has no memory of his true identity.

Atla Au outlines
Road Trip Au Atla Verse
Zuko realizes early on in his banishment the truth, doubts his uncle cares because adults can't be trusted and sends a letter to azula to let her know that he is still her big brother and he cares about her but he is not going to go on a fool's quest.
He sees that the fire nation is wrong and decides he will put a stop to it, that when he is strong enough he will come back for her and get rid of their father, that she is welcome to take the throne. He'll be her second hand.
He becomes the blue spirit full time and just… goes to town.
Freedom fighters scout zuko out but zuko is awkward turtleduck.
Does not speak or remove his mask for anything. Has more than once stabbed jet with a knife by accident because he gives him azula vibes.
Freedom fighters are convinced he is feral. (he is)
Helps Teo and his group clean up the northern air temple, runs off the fire nation for them and leaves. He is not aware that he drew their attention even more, thus the mechanic ends up under the fire nation.
Meets hama and nopes the hell out after saving the fire nation people. Hama ends up having to move.
He ends up with the swamp benders for a cool minute. Does not appreciate the swamp visions.
(Avatar Roku/Aang give him a visit)
Competes in an earth rumble for money, loses to toph.
Zuko sees a small vicious child falls in love a little. Just like his sister.
They hang out whenever he's in town.
Visits the other air temples and buries the dead left behind.
Breaks into several fire nation strongholds.
Even rescues a few prisoners from prisons.
Meets Hakoda's fleet.
Runs from Hakoda's fleet.
Stabs Bato twice.
Has a record of stabbing adults (jet is the only exception)
Accidentally stows away on their ship once.
Bato does not let him forget it.
Meets Long Feng and gets creeped out.
Meets Zhao and goes for the eyes.
Chills in Omashu and meets Bumi.
Bumi takes in feral blue spirit and makes him play messenger for him and the order of the white lotus- Zuko's completely oblivious to the secret society.
He gets along with Flopsie, has been found sleeping with flopsie more than once.
By the time of aang's awakening Zuko has achieved spirit status
He's practically a legend.
First time he meets aang he falls out of a tree.
And falls in love with appa

Another Avatar au idea. Sokka is stranded on an island after the storm and thinks he'll have to survive on his own. But there's some strange creature that follows him and watches him at night. Over the next few days, he discovers that it's a feral dragon boy, and he's really sweet when he's not growling at everything.

random thought on "big brother Sokka" in the Azula!Dragon AU:
immediately adopts the disheveled, slightly feral Firebender (and would adopt the other disheveled, slightly feral Firebender if he wasn't trying to kill them);
will cry when he realizes he's one of the only two humans allowed to touch Azula in a non-practical way;
(got tear-eyed when he was allowed in the cuddle pile);
is always extremely amused by horns and tail;
(got tear-eyed the first time he met up with Azula alone and her horns/tail were out because, well, that's her family and she's annoyed by how happy she feels that she has a family);
wants to be a dragon just to have the skills needed to carry Azula like a mother cat carries its kitten;
always annoyed that she's taller than him, but loves when she has basically a growth spurt and puts on some weight and looks just so healthy;
both pretend that the rides are training, yes, even when the war is over and there's no need to train at all;
no, they don't talk about how long dragons actually live and how their 400-year-old friend is barely a young adult in the dragon age scale;
Sokka definitely helps Azula sculp the betrothal necklace;
Sokka jumped in front of her to protect her multiple times, which's annoying considering the last person that will be harmed by fire is her... but it's also really nice that he cares;
Ursa eventually makes him basically officially part of the little clan (Katara's jealous, but then Rangi explains platonic bonds are considered official in a clan much, much sooner than romantic ones);
(Ursa has to do it because Azula's too proud- and last time she claimed a brother, he kinda tried to decapitate her a few times);
Hakoda takes one look at how Sokka treats the little firebender and goes "I guess I have another daughter then";
nope, Sokka will never fully forgive Zuko. even if he understands craving for your dad's approval, even if he understands it's a war. even if he can see that Zuko cares and loves her, and wouldn't have done anything he did if he knew. still. Zuko still hurt her.

ATLA but Star Wars AU/fusion
The Earth Kingdom is the Republic
The Fire Nation is the Empire (a split-off from the republic? or a Sith empire that came to conquer it? up to you)
The Air Nomads are the Jedi, trying to live peacefully but hunted to near-extinction by the empire
The Water Tribe(s) are Mandalorian. The Northern Water Tribe are the New Mandalorians, who want peace so badly that they refuse to take sides when the rest of the world is at war. The Southern Water Tribe are warrior Mandalorians, who fight bravely but are dwindling in numbers.
This is all just a set-up for a Hakoda-adopts-Zuko storyline where Hakoda has that engrained Mandalorian adopt-any-child-that-is-unattended-or-looks-sad instinct and sees a scarred, traumatized, semi-feral Sith-adjacent boy and goes "my kid now".
