In Wicked King, when Jude suggests that Cardan seduce Nicassia, she says the rage in his eyes is black as coal, but that he "he doesn't kiss [her] as though he is angry; his kiss is soft, yearning."

I am certain that he wasn't angry at all. He was getting hot and heavy at the idea that Jude found him charming. Jude just doesn't understand people not hating her.
