Lan Zhan loves Wei Ying very much, and is quietly overjoyed to finally be dating him. Most especially because this means Wei Ying has stopped putting up a fight when he tries to look after him.

Like by securing an urgent optometrist’s appointment when he finally visits Wei Ying’s apartment after the man does a massive deep clean because it has to be nice for Lan Zhan and blinks down at Wei Ying’s pet.

“Wei Ying, why is there a raccoon in your apartment?”

And Wei Ying laughs and says, “Lan Zhan, that’s Kitty!”

“Kitty is a raccoon.”

“Kitty is my cat, Lan Zhan, don’t be mean.”

There is a moment of quiet consideration. “How did Wei Ying acquire this cat?”

“He was a stray, out by the dumpster at work. He’s super sweet, though. Used to take fries right from my hand. The internet says that’s kind of a bad idea, though. Teachable moment.”

Lan Zhan blinks at him.

They are going to get a rabies shot and prescription glasses immediately.

Wei Ying whines until he gets a proper look at his boyfriend in high definition and blows out a breath like, “Oh wow. Okay, yeah. Glasses.”

He appreciates seeing just how red Lan Zhan’s ears get, now that he can see it properly.

But the thing is, they don’t get rid of Kitty.

Because Wei Ying loves him.

And so when Lan Xichen finally comes to their place for dinner, he is confronted with a very well-cared for raccoon, which comes right up to him and pats his leg hello.

“Brother, this is Kitty.”

“...A-Zhan, Kitty has thumbs.”

“He is very clever, as well. He steals sandwiches.”

“That is because Kitty is a raccoon.”

“Yes.”

Mingjue starts getting borderline hysterical texts from his boyfriend about Lan Zhan’s batshitticus boyfriend and the raccoon he keeps in their apartment.

Mingjue assumes this is a funny joke, or that they just have a very fat dumpster cat, in true Wei Ying fashion.

Lan Wangji was nervous. He shouldn't be, but he was.

After spending summer in Japan with his brother, his brother's best friend and said friend's younger brother, who's also his classmate (also known as Nie Huaisang), today was his first date with his year long boyfriend Wei Ying since he was back (two days ago).

They decided to go out for boba and a walk on the park before going to the Lans townhouse so Wei Ying could get his presents and souvenirs. Lan Qiren already asked for a spicy plate for the boy to eat at dinner, even if the teenagers haven't said anything about it. His uncle just know them well enough.

Anyway, Lan Wangji wasn't nervous because of the date itself, he knows how to make Wei Ying happy and a happy Wei Ying makes him the happiest. No, he was nervous about the giant bunny plush he won on gacha a few weeks ago.

(he spent over an hour and countless coins on it. Nie Huaisang was highly amused watching and filming him getting a meltdown every time it fell)

As usual, their date was excellent and Wei Ying smiled the whole time, not letting go of his hand or arm. He pouted and whined a lot, about missing him, about his jealousy (even though he traveled with his parents to the beach somewhere in Thailand, away from humid and hot gigantic city), and Lan Wangji make sure to hug and kiss him a lot to make up for it.

Then they went back to Lan Wangji's house and he started feeling his heart beating faster.

Because of house rules, they couldn't go to Lan Wangji's room by themselves, so Wei Ying sat on the living room floor to play with his boyfriend's pet bunnies and waited for him to come back with his presents.

"Wei Ying." Lan Wangji called.

"Lan Zhan!"

The boy looked up with a bright smile and Lan Wangji could feel the love arrow pierce his heart once again. He had to pause for a moment before kneeling down.

"For you."

"Yay!" Wei Ying cheered, taking the paper bag "Should I open now or wait until I get home?"

"Here." Lan Wangji nodded, glad his boyfriend didn't realized he hid the big plushie beside the couch.

Wei Ying got excited with each item, even the ones for his parents and little sister. Although he did started complaining it was too much halfway through. Wei Ying got especially happy when he found the photo strips from the booth Nie Huaisang made him go in Harajuku.

"Thank you so much, Lan Zhan." he said when finished, putting everything inside the bag again.

"...There's one more." Lan Wangji confessed, accepting his hug.

"One more?" Wei Ying looked at him curiously "Why it wasn't with the others?"

"Ah..."

Lan Wangji pushed him softly and stretched backwards to get the plushie.

"I won a bunny plush for you." he said, feeling his ears warming up.

"A bunny plush?!" Wei Ying's eyes widened, visibly excited "I love plushies!"

"I know." Lan Wangji huffed amusedly.

Then, he presented his acquisition.

But instead of squealing with mirth, Wei Ying bit down his lip.

"A bunny plush, Lan Zhan?"

"Yes..."

Wei Ying laughed loudly, falling down to the ground with tears in his eyes and Lan Wangji looked down at the plushie in his hands. It was a big headed bunny with big floppy ears, blue eyes and wearing a cute aviation uniform.

What's wrong with it? Lan Wangji thought it was cute. Very, very cute. He even thought about getting one for himself, but the stress to get one was already too much for him.

"Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying exclaimed, trying to stop laughing "That's not a bunny! It's cinnamon roll!"

"...Cinnamon roll?"

"You don't know?" Wei Ying stopped laughing to stare at him "He's a Sanrio character, you know. Hello Kitty...?"

"I know Hello Kitty." he paused "Is this not a bunny?"

"Noooo! It's a dog!" Wei Ying laughed again, taking his phone and typing something fast "Look."

A search with the character name was made and it shown: Cinnamoroll, is a white puppy with chubby cheeks and long ears, blue eyes, pink cheeks, and a tail that resembles a cinnamon roll.

"A puppy." he looked at the plushie again in confusion. How is this a puppy?!

"Yeah." Wei Ying chuckled "And it's mine! Don't even think about taking it back just because it's not a bunny!" he mock threatened.

Silently, still confused, he gave the Cinnamonroll to his boyfriend, watching him cuddling the not bunny tightly.

Well. At least Wei Ying is happy.

He can't wait for lunch tomorrow with Wei Ying's parents.

It stars Hilary Duff as Greta, an edgy, suicidal, problem child teenager sent to live with her grandparents for the summer in New Jersey, and no one is really happy about the arrangement. She starts seeing this boy named Julie who's a linecook at a restaurant in town, and when she finds out he was arrested and sent to juvie as a teenager for joyriding she decides to invite him over and use him to shock her grandparents' conservative sensibilities. He's a nice guy and the grandparents end up liking him which Greta is pissed about, and Julie's pissed because he doesn't appreciate being used like that and tells her so. Of course they make up and go on their merry little summer romance way -- to the point where Greta invites Julie up to her room one night to try to sleep with him, but the grandparents' nosy neighbor sees him climbing the trellis and calls the cops to come arrest him, and the grandparents believe for a brief minute or two that he's gone back to his criminal ways to rob their house (which is cleared up without him actually getting arrested).

But! all of this to say - I just had it in my head that it might be a fun little angsty scene to have a WWX who's been kicked out of the Jiang house come to LWJ for a place to sleep for the night. WWX is having a shitty night and has no idea what he's going to do next, LWJ (who doesn't know what's going on with the Jiangs) is wondering if this is finally the night all his secret teen romance dreams come true, and then the cops show up to arrest WWX because someone in the Lans' prissy uptight neighborhood saw him climbing up the trellis to LWJ's room and decided to call 911 about a suspected burglary. That's about as far as I got and I don't know if I'll continue it or not, but here's most of it!

“Lan Zhan,” he whispers, tapping carefully on his window. It’s thick and double paned but he’s just barely tapping it with one knuckle, half afraid and half hoping that Lan Zhan sleeps lightly.

He knocks for a good while, maybe ten minutes he thinks, before a bleary-eyed Lan Zhan glares at him through the glass, his scowl almost hidden by the reflection of the full moon. Wuxian hunches his shoulders a bit and tries to look apologetic as he waves, a weak, half-hearted thing that at least convinces Lan Zhan to open the window.

“Wei Ying?” he breathes and Wuxian thinks he could cry, if he let himself. Lan Zhan always says his name so gently, so long as Wuxian hasn’t pissed him off lately. “Why- what are you doing?”

“Can’t a boy visit another boy in the middle of the night without it being weird?” he asks with none of his usual breeziness. Even Wuxian is well aware that it’s terrible reasoning and Lan Zhan would have every reason to shut the window again and leave him outside; not that that would be so bad either, it’s a mild summer night and the widow’s walk is a perfectly quiet and private place to sleep if he must do it outside.

“…Mn. The screen-“ Lan Zhan finally murmurs and Wuxian blinks uncomprehendingly for a long moment. It takes Lan Zhan lifting the window up as high as it will go and pressing his hand meaningfully against the big screen still blocking the opening before Wuxian laughs, self-deprecating, and hurries to help Lan Zhan with all the fiddly little pieces of metal holding it in place. When they’re all loosened Lan Zhan pops it out, both of them freezing the moment after to make sure the noise didn’t carry far enough to wake Lan Qiren.

Wuxian clambers into Lan Zhan’s bedroom and spares a moment to be glad that the other boy hadn’t bothered to turn on his lamp. Still, caution is a virtue and so Wuxian makes a little show out of examining the room for the softest patch of the floor to sleep on, goading and pushing until Lan Zhan says, stiff as a board, “We may share.”

Sharing is so fucking good, too. Sharing means Lan Zhan’s warm back pressed against his, and the whisper quiet of his regular breathing, and the knowledge that nothing that can hurt him will find him here.

But then, of course: he should’ve known better than to trust his luck.

It feels like no sooner has he closed his eyes to bask in Lan Zhan’s proximity on his way to sleeping than he’s startled awake again by a sudden whooping, cutting on and off strangely in a way he recognizes instinctively before he even opens his eyes to see red and blue flashing through Lan Zhan’s bedroom in dizzying snapshots.

“Shit -“ he hisses, launching himself out of bed “- fuck!!” A quick glance out the window shows not one but two squad cars, and Wuxian backs away from the nonexistent protection the glass offers quickly enough that he bumps into Lan Zhan behind him.

“Wei Ying?”

“Fuck, I have to go, sorry Lan Zhan I just-“ Wuxian makes it to the bedroom door before he remembers Lan Qiren’s presence somewhere on the other side of it.

“Wei Ying!”

“Sorry, Lan Zhan, I’m sorry-“ he stammers as he brushes past him and shoves the window up its track again. He stumbles out onto the widow’s walk, foot catching on the sill before he rights himself. He’s barely thinking beyond a panicked need to run as he swings over the railing and finds purchase in the same trellis he’d climbed up, hidden somewhat in the shadows between the Lan house, their privacy fence, and the house next door. He descends as quickly as he can, heart rabbiting in his chest and his sweat-slick hands slipping on the smooth bark and leaves of the climbing vine.

He’s roughly three feet away from solid ground and the ability to run for his life when rough hands yank him down and throw him towards the road; there’s no recovering his balance on this one and he goes down hard with a grunt, the pavement scraping up both hands and the arm he’d landed on. He scrabbles to his feet, shoes scuffing on the pavement, but finds himself abruptly caught in a chokehold, his feet flailing wildly as he tries to throw the fucking bastard choking off his air off-balance enough to get free.

“Wei Ying!!”

“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!” Lan Qiren’s bellow is by far the loudest thing to happen yet save the chirping of the sirens, and Wuxian is at least pleased to see two of the officers standing by to grab him flinch away from the absolute fury of a be-slippered Lan Qiren coming down the front stairs, furiously belting a robe over his pajamas. “You!”

“We got a call about an intruder, sir, and we just caught him sneaking back out,” the officer holding him grunts; Wuxian kicks his feet again and tries to ignore the edges of his vision starting to fuzz out. 

“Shufu, please-“ oh Lan Zhan’s here now, Wuxian realizes. He must be hallucinating from the lack of oxygen or something, because Lan Zhan looks more distressed than Wuxian has ever seen him.

Hello!

Do u think someone could read your fic Time Signature without ever watching the show/no prior knowledge, and have it make sense?

Yes. It’s a modern AU, so it exists in its own world, separate from canon. Several people who don’t know canon have read it and enjoyed it. And I even managed to get like 3 people into the canon, so I am proud.

You also don’t need to know canon for my other CQL/MDZS fic, Say More. Both fics have a very strong focus on just two characters without a lot of interacting with other characters. They’re also both love stories with very little plot other than falling in love (or really, pining and then realizing they’re in love).

That said, they both start with what feels like a lot of names. This is kind of setting up the alternate universe for each story, so that the reader kind of understands where the canon characters are and what they do in this universe. You can really easily read these fics without knowing who any of these people are, and like I said, almost no other characters really feature.

Time Signature starts with what feels like a list of people, but they are all introduced and explained. The only thing you need to know there is that Lan Zhan is the main character and Lan Xichen is his older brother.

For Say More, I think the main thing you need to know is that Wei Ying is the main character, and he’s adopted. Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli are his adopted brother and sister, respectively.

#xiantober Day 20: Coffeeshopxian

Wei Ying recently started working at a local coffeeshop.

There's this regular who comes in for tea most mornings. He's just slightly taller than Wei Ying with the most stunning golden brown eyes and a stone-cold expression.

Wei Ying wants to befriend him.

Every day Wei Ying is on shift and that man walks in, he's ready to smile and charm his way to being best friends. Every time, Wei Ying fails.

Sure, he knows that people are busy and the shop is busy too, but boy does it bum him out.

He tries every time regardless. Wei Ying is sure he can annoy the man into being his friend.

It takes weeks, but eventually, the man starts to chat more with Wei Ying each time he comes in. Wei Ying is over the moon.

They gradually get to know each other more.

It takes some time seeing as their conversations are relatively short. Wei Ying talks while he makes his drink while Lan Zhan—Wei Ying loves saying his name every chance he gets—mostly listens. Lan Zhan does talk about himself too, though.

Wei Ying truly enjoys chatting with Lan Zhan when he comes in and really wants to be able to hang out with him outside of work, but he doesn't know how to go about doing so. The thought of verbally asking him frightens him too much to do that, not at work.

So, eventually, Wei Ying resigns to give Lan Zhan his number with a note to text him.

Problem is, Lan Zhan brings in his own reusable mug and never takes a receipt.

Wei Ying is at a bit of a loss. That idea is the least scary and risky but there's no easy way to do it.

He flounders for a good few weeks as he tries to figure out how to ask Lan Zhan to hang out with him outside of work or work up the courage to just outright ask him.

For a generally lively and gregarious guy, Wei Ying can be quite shy when it comes to some things.

So often, Wei Ying has opened his mouth to say "Do you want to hang out with me sometime, Lan Zhan?"

Every single time he faltered, smiled, and just waved goodbye instead.

Every time, Lan Zhan stares at him before nodding once and leaving with his tea.

Then, one day, Lan Zhan comes in and he doesn't have his reusable mug with him. Wei Ying's eyes widen when he realizes he'll be able to his number on the cup. He chatters excitedly—nervously—as he writes it on the cup and makes the drink. Lan Zhan hums and nods along.

When Wei Ying puts the drink down, Lan Zhan doesn't look at it at all as he picks it up. He keeps his eyes on Wei Ying as he smiles softly and says "I'll call you," before he leaves. Wei Ying's mouth is hanging wide open as he watches Lan Zhan exit the coffeeshop.

He knew?

He didn't even look at the cup to see if Wei Ying wrote his number.

HE KNEW!?

Wei Ying's mind buzzes the rest of his shift.

That evening, he gets a call from a number he doesn't recognize. It's local. Anxiously, he answers. "Hello?"

"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan replies.

"Lan Zhan! Hi!" Wei Ying laughs as his heart pounds. "You knew I wrote my number on your cup without looking at it!" It's not a question but it kind of comes out like one.

"Mn. Why do you think I didn't bring my mug in today?"

Wei Ying gasps, delighted. "Sneaky man!"

"Mn." He can hear the pleased tone in Lan Zhan's voice.

"So, you mean to tell me that you knew that I've been wanting to talk to you outside of work for weeks and you just never said anything!?"

"You never said anything either, Wei Ying."

He splutters. True, but...

"You still could have instead of watching me struggle! So cruel of you, Lan Zhan," he teases. "You have to make it up to me now."

Lan Zhan hums apologetically. "Of course. Go out with me?"

Wei Ying's breath gets caught in his throat. He hadn't really thought about dating.

He was so focused on befriending Lan Zhan that he hadn't realized when his feelings grew and shifted into something new and unfamiliar, but not unwelcome. He finds that the idea of dating Lan Zhan is one he quite likes, actually. It surprises him. He wants that.

Wei Ying smiles wide as he holds the phone closer. "Yes."

Deleted scenes from "scarcely trust my candid heart"

Hello! I know it's been a couple months since I posted new fic, but the beta/beta installment of Wangxian A/B/O Bingo, scarcely trust my candid heart, is up now! 7 down, 2 to go. Below are a few deleted scenes from the new fic - they contain spoilers, so I'd read the fic first.

By “deleted scenes,” I really mean “four different versions of the ending, plus one actual deleted scene.” Why did it take me five versions to get an ending I liked?

Well, this fic has an inherent tone problem. It’s 33% farce and 66% smut, and the style changes pretty drastically when we make the switch here from farce to smut. The sections are much longer—indeed, the smut is just one long continuous section, whereas the farce is broken up into dozens of smaller moments. The smart thing to do would have been to separate them out into two separate fics, honestly. But I didn’t want to do the smart thing. I really love a lot of pieces of the smut scene, and I think they’d lose a lot from being taken out of the context of the farce sections. The fic I wanted to write, in my heart, had both. So instead of performing a separation, I revised and revised and revised to try to make the tone of the smut match the tone of the farce as closely as I possibly could—and I took more than 5 whacks at the ending, because the ending has to do so much work in tying the smut back to the farce at the very end and making it feel like one cohesive fic.

So here’s Attempt No. 1:

“At first, I just wanted Lan Zhan’s attention. And then I wanted Lan Zhan to like me, and then I wanted Lan Zhan to—”

Beat.

“What?”

Beat.

“Keep me, maybe,” Wei Ying says, looking nervous. “Be my… my special person, like we talked about.” Beat. She fidgets. “Lan Zhan is so good. Nobody else is as good. Nobody else could be. So… that’s why. But if Lan Zhan doesn’t—”

“I will keep Wei Ying.”

“Oh, you will, will you?”

“Mn.”

No interest in locking someone up—

“If—only if Wei Ying wants to be kept. By me.”

“Mm, I do,” Wei Ying says without hesitation, eyes clear and bright. “As long as I can keep Lan Zhan, too.”

“Mn.”

“Mn?”

“I… yes. Wei Ying may. Keep me.”

A wordless noise of delight, and a kiss.

“Lan Zhan.” With mischief.

A look of what?

“Lan Zhan likes me. Lan Zhan liked me all along! Even when she was being so mean, and glaring at me and calling me shameless—”

Disgruntled look.

“You can’t put that spell on me now, Lan-jiejie – if you did, I couldn’t kiss you, and you’d be sad.”

The last few lines, and the callback to the “not wanting to lock someone up” part of the very first scene of the fic, made it into the final posted version. But this version of the ending didn’t go far enough in tying the ending back to the beginning, and it was also kind of redundant – the characters say the same thing multiple times.

Note also that the emphasis here is on Wei Ying and what she wants – nothing wrong with that in the abstract, but it draws this version even farther away from the beginning of the fic, which is very single-mindedly focused on Lan Wangji and what she wants, and it draws even farther away from the thematic content (such as it is), which is about Lan Wangji coming to accept that her previous understanding of herself was wrong.

So let’s take a look at Attempt No. 2:

Lan Wangji’s ears burn, but she is pleased – makes me wet, not made. A piece of evidence to add to the case she has started to build: the case that perhaps this was not purely a whim for Wei Ying. That she has, perhaps, had the kind of thoughts about Lan Wangji that have so plagued Lan Wangji about her.

Eventually, Wei Ying loses interest in her licking and flicks her gaze over Lan Wangji’s body, smiling. “Let me clean us up, ah, Lan-jiejie?”

Lan Wangji frowns. She is enjoying the physical proof of Wei Ying’s pleasure and is in no hurry to have it wiped away.

Wei Ying presses a placating kiss to her shoulder. “I know, I know, it feels nice now! But it won’t feel nice when it’s all cold and sticky.”

“Hm.” Lan Wangji is not convinced. But she allows it.

When Wei Ying is finished wiping them both down with a wet cloth, she rises from the bed and turns away. Reaching for her discarded inner robe, she begins to cross the room to the other bed.

Lan Wangji’s breath catches, frozen in a sudden panic—perhaps she was wrong. Again. Perhaps this was nothing but a whim, or a—a pedagogical exercise. Perhaps her fantasies of Wei Ying in the sunlight were misplaced after all.

Wei Ying is crouching by the side of the bed now, looking worried. “Lan Zhan, what’s wrong?”

Nothing, Lan Wangji almost says. It is—mortifying, to want these things. She has been wrong about a great deal, but she was not wrong about that.

But—she does want them. And simply assuming that she cannot have them: she has traveled that road before. It is unbecoming for a Lan disciple to accept ignorance, out of cowardice. Be diligent and undaunted in the pursuit of knowledge.

“Wei Ying said I can have—a special person,” she begins.

“You can,” Wei Ying confirms, with an encouraging smile. “For sure you can.”

“Wei Ying said she liked me so much.”

“Oh.” Wei Ying bites her lip. Pink blooms on her cheeks, and she looks away. “I—do.”

“Wei Ying said we could do this every day.”

Wei Ying’s eyes narrow. “I’m not sure I remember that part.” Then she smiles, mischievous. “But I won’t say it sounds bad.”

Lan Wangji nods, satisfied. She knows what she needs to know about Wei Ying. And she thinks she knows what she needs to know about herself.

“I told Shufu, when I was twelve years old, that I was not interested in marriage.”

“Is that how all this started?”

“But I was wrong.”

“O-oh. Uh…”

“I am interested in marriage.” Beat. “I do not wish to be alone always.”

“Lan Zhan…”

“And giggling is… acceptable.” LWJ very reluctant to admit this. “If it is Wei Ying.”

“Well. That’s very big of you.”

“Mn.”

“If Wei Ying does not wish to marry me…”

No desire to lock someone up…

“Well, it’s a little sudden!” QB “But I—do like Lan Zhan, so much. So.” Beat. “Engaged? Maybe?”

Lan Wangji decides not to inform Wei Ying that they are already engaged.

Big chunks of this—especially the very end—made it into the final version. But overall, this attempt is too long, and has too many inflection points – in other words, too many points where Lan Wangji has to make a decision. Each one makes the others seem less important. You can tell, reading this, that it’s sort of 3 separate endings mashed together.

There are things I like about it, though! The focus is on Lan Wangji this time – that’s correct. I love the “pedagogical exercise” bit (it will resurface later) and “fantasies of Wei Ying in the sunlight.” And I still really like the idea of Lan Wangji grappling with the mortifying ordeal of coming clean about her feelings, and needing to stiffen her own spine a bit with some fortifying quotations of the principles.

If Attempt No. 2 was two steps forward, Attempt No. 3 is one step back:

Quietly, she says, “Lan Zhan can have a special person. Does she maybe… want me to be her special person? At least—for a little while?”

Lan Wangji hesitates. There is only one possible answer to this question, but it is mortifying.

Wei Ying stiffens at her delay, and pulls away. “Of course, Lan Zhan only just learned about all this!” she says, with desperate brightness. “Of course, Lan Zhan will want to—to play the field, try out all the other beautiful jiejies who—”

“Wei Ying. We are married.”

Wei Ying’s jaw drops. For a moment, there is silence.

Then, faintly, she says, “M-married?”

“Mn.”

“Lan Zhan. ‘Mn’ is not an explanation.”

I love some Wei Wuxian insecurity, especially when Lan Wangji then turns around and nukes said insecurity, but this isn’t really the fic for that. And it puts the spotlight back on Wei Wuxian’s thought processes instead of Lan Wangji’s, which is a step in the wrong direction. That said, “Mn is not an explanation” is a line I’m definitely stealing from myself and using in some future fic. It’s too good to sit on the scrap heap.

On to Attempt No. 4:

“Is that how all this got started,” Wei Ying mutters, looking fascinated.

“Mn. Due to… comments made in response to that statement, I—believed that marriage was not available to me. That—intimacy of this kind was not available to me.”

Beat.

“In Cold Pond Cave. When I tied us together with my ribbon.”

“Oh, shit, that—that’s a Lan marriage?”

“Mn.” Slight pause. “An engagement at the very least.”

“Lan Zhan!! I can’t believe you married me without telling me!” QB “Lan Zhan, you are the most frustrating person in the world – you married me and I didn’t even think you liked me, you made me crazy trying to get your attention—”

“Wei Ying.” Beat. “Even when I believed I did not want to be married. I married you. Even when I believed I did not want—lovemaking. The thought of you made me want.”

“Lan Zhan.”

“Even when I believed I wanted to be alone. I looked forward to your company.”

“Lan Zhan, you…”

“Even giggling is… not so bad. If it is Wei Ying.”

Beat.

“Okay, well, I—didn’t really understand the giggling part, but—I think… I think Lan Zhan does want to be my special person. And not just for a little while.”

“Always.”

The focus is back on Lan Wangji’s thought processes, which is right, and we’ve brought back the “I do want marriage, don’t want to be alone, giggling is okay” triptych from Attempt No. 2, which makes it into the final fic. Ultimately, this version is just trying to do too much – it depends a lot on cleanness of rhetorical rhythm (“even when I thought I couldn’t want X, I wanted it with you. Even when I thought I couldn’t do Y, I tried to do it with you,” etc.), but couldn’t maintain it because it required all these Lan Wangji mental asides, which broke up the flow. I really liked the beat of expressly stating that Lan Wangji drove Wei Wuxian just as crazy as Wei Wuxian drove her, but the final version manages to imply that without having to insert a bunch of Wei Wuxian dialogue when the focus is supposed to be on Lan Zhan’s realizations about herself.

Hopefully you agree that the posted version of the ending is the best of the options on display, but even if you don’t, I’m still happy – all 5 versions are my writing, so it’s a compliment either way!

Finally, an actual deleted scene:

In the morning, while Wei Ying is still sleeping, Lan Wangji composes and posts a letter to her uncle. It is short, and to the point.

Shufu,

Wangji writes to correct a misimpression. She is, in fact, interested in marriage. The misimpression arose from the fact that, regrettably, Wangji is only interested in marriage to Wei Ying. Wangji apologizes most sincerely for the misunderstanding. And for her taste.

I considered putting this at the very end. It would have put a cute little bow on the story, given Lan Qiren another moment in the sun (I feel a little bad that we never come back to him after that first scene, where he’s trying so hard but his advice is totally misconstrued!), and hopefully it makes you laugh.

But first of all, it’s redundant – the important thing is Lan Wangji admitting to herself that her life was ruled by this misunderstanding about betas. Having her admit it to a third party who doesn’t show up that much in the fic doesn’t add much value. And second, it’s out of character because it’s disloyal. Lan Wangji might think in her internal narration that being only interested in Wei Ying is “regrettable,” but she’s MUCH too loyal, classy, and courteous to ever say that to another person (and she wouldn’t mean it even to herself). And she certainly wouldn’t insult Wei Ying by apologizing for her taste in partners.

Hello again! It's dragonfly anon here! And after reading more about Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's relationship, I ccouldn't help but notice that their relationship is pretty much what me and a friend of mine had going on for 3 years until I eventually decided to cut ties with her.

I was Wei Wuxian in this scenario, and, by the heavens do I understand his feelings more than ever. Where you are the only person who gives and gives more of yourself just to please others until eventually you are nothing more than an emotional slave, being tied to whatever genuine feelings you once had for the person that now tries to keep you in a leash, living in a perfect fantasy to suit their needs.

Much like Jiang Cheng, this friend of mine was only ever satisfied when i did things her way, and if i was better than her, or didn't reach her expectations, I was suddendly the one in the wrong. I couldn't have more friends, otherwise i was picking others over her, I couldn't do better in classes, because then I was shaming her, and oh boy dare I like someone romantically.

This is kind of a vent but also just me understanding Wei Wuxian more than ever and just being happy that he also got to be free. Specially with someone who loves and is the to support him like Lan Wangji!

I still haven't found my own Lan Zhan, but I have time and I have new friends and my family to support me, but I still wanted to share this little piece here because as someone who was in a similiar situation to Wei wuxian, it pains me to see people belittle his feelings over Jiang Cheng. I don't really mind if people create AU's and such, these are fictional characters after all, but when talking about canon JC as if WWX was in the wrong? People gotta be ready to catch my fucking fists because I'm coming for them, no one hurts my son in my presence.

But yeah your post yesterday was also a very enlightening and I truly had to lay down and have my onw "Oh" moment because, oof it hit right in the feels. Anyways love you and your posts and they always bring me so much joy! (Tho I have to read SVSSS now to help fend off your blog against nasty haters, gonna start my research soon!)

I am very happy about this, Dragonfly!

I do think what keeps Mo Dao Zu Shi so great as a reread over and over is because it has such a great underlying social commentary through it's characters on very human relationships and how none of those can really be neatly tied up for endings. I do see how those ends can be lackluster, since the end of a fall out of an extremely bad relationship is not supposed to always be cathartic. Sometimes you just have to move on yourself and live even if they're stuck in the past.

I do think Wei Wuxian is an amazingly written literary character, he wouldn't be as magnetic in fandom if it wasn't for how well written he is as a protagonist. The work meticulously works it's way through to show, that whatever mistakes that yes, Wei Wuxian may have made, he learned and grew from that and became more world aware without letting that jade his optimism for people. It takes a lot of strength to go through hell and still say you want others, and yourself, to remember the happy times over the hard. His mistakes and regrets are there, but he doesn't let them keep him from being levelheaded or realistic about the world he is in.

Vindication is very easy to feel, but he is just not that type of character to try to attempt that through by the end.

What brings me to this, yes! Once again I love when these things gets noticed and that includes the use of Lan Zhan's birth name! It is intentional in this story (As you pointed out, it is indeed an AU, or other timeline, expect more of the glitches hehe). I see it as Wei Ying using his courtesy name to address him instead of his birth name is a way to detach himself or even draw a line between them! Obviously as you well stated he only uses it at those few occasions in the original work, but here he deems necessary for him to not get too involved with him as you know, they will be sharing the same space from now on! Also, you might interpret it as you wish! That's the fun of story telling. As how far will Wei Ying keep doing this well... that's up to him and how will his relationship progress! 11. Hi! I’m looking for an immune system(?) fic!

Basically, Lan Wangji is a white blood cell and Wei Wuxian is coronavirus. The different clans are different parts of the immune system. The Lan clan was the white blood cells. There were other clans too but I forgot what position they played.

The way your immune system looks like depends on how creative and active the mind of the body’s owner is. Like some people will have immune systems that look realistic, while others might look more cartoonish. In this fic, this all takes place in yibo’s body and it’s set like historical china where the cells are like cultivators with swords and the germs are like ghosts.

Okay so when Wei Wuxian first enters yibo’s body, There are reports that a few white blood cells were found dead. So they sent Lan Wangji to go investigate. When Wangji gets there, He finds Wei Wuxian sleeping. When he wakes up, they fight and I think they become friends? Lan Wangji visits him a few more times after that I think.

I don’t remember much after that scene but I remember yibo’s body getting better after Wei Wuxian leaves the body. Yibo then decides to become a blood donor for some experimentation for the vaccine. Inside the immune system, they elect a few cells to be sent out. Lan Wangji being one of them who volunteered.

Lan Wangji is the only white blood cell that will work for the vaccine because wangxian soulmates <3 Also when he becomes the vaccine, he turns into Hanguangjun and he’s like glowing gold.

The fic ends with something relating with both yibo and xiao zhan.

12. Hi! I remember a fic I read at least a year ago, if not two. I remember these few things about it.

- It is not a modern au. Pretty sure it was still the "period" verse.

- Lan Wangji falls to a coma for some reason, and Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing (only 80% her it was her and not some other random doctor) work on bringing him back.

- Lan Wangji keeps dreaming of him meeting WWX at a dreamscape lotus pier, and WWX keeps getting away or smth like that

- The most memorable part is it mentioning how WWX cares for the body of a comatose patient and all the not so pleasant things that entail the task. Not graphically so but it does mention and I immediately took note because very rarely do fanfics details things like that when writing about a bedridden character.

#12 sounds like an abo type fic where wei ying was a feral omega who was super strong (instead of going into a sexual heat, it was a murder spree lol) lan zhan was imprisoned and then rescued and i think he was bedridden for most of the fic. i think the summary mentioned that too. wei ying and lan zhan were imprisoned together and lan zhan was doing really badly:( i hope it's found!

1. What’s your favorite character(s) to write for?

Sasuke Uchiha, still and maybe for forever. It's starting to become a close call with Lan Zhan/Wangji from mdzs though. I love their silence and their conflicted feelings. Writing them is like soothing a quiet pain.

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

I would say... not plot driven. Slow. So much happens because nothing happens (or we realise so much has happened, because nothing happens). It's like quiet mornings for talking. Like making space, like a calm after a storm?

Also, somehow, uncontroled and messy (which i do not see as a bad thing per se, but bless @kemperrose for beta reading).

12. Who is your favorite author? 

It's Ali Smith! Her style is uncontroled, witty, engaged and completely unique. Don't ask me what her books are about, I won't know, but oh i love them so much. Also! I love Louise Gluck so much rn, especially her book Averno (I posted some Averno fragments earlier). Then for fanfic writers I mainly love @kinomiakai (:

13. When did you start writing fanfic? 

I started writing Naruto fanfiction when I was 13, which is 11 years ago! I started by writing/posting Shikamaru centric fics. I wrote snk for a while instead of Naruto though.

17. What fanfic tropes do you gravitate to writing for? 

This won't come as a surprise but: domestic fluff or hurt/comfort. I used to write so so many dumb Coffee shop au's and Farmfics as well hahaha.

18. Do you prefer editing as you write, or waiting until it’s finished? 

I can't edit while writing bc I will get stuck but when I want to continue writing (say, after writing 1k and falling asleep) I'll reread what I wrote the day before to get inspired and edit that part. I read all stories 1 more time before publishing them though.

21. Is there an idea you’ve always wanted to write, but haven’t yet?

Hmm.. not really? I have been thinking about writing a farmfic / small village fic that is more in a modern setting. I would love to write another multi chapter slow fic where they're just in nature. Maybe one where Sasuke rents Naruto's bnb cottage?

29. What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most? (Brainstorming, outlining, writing, editing, etc) 

Honestly, I brainstorm and outline very little. Literally answering something like question 21 is as much as I have before i sit down to write. So, the sitting down and doing the actual writing. I'm a very "go hard"/blunt writer. I sit down without having any idea what will come, and I write a lot of my fics in one sitting, starting at breakfast and forgetting to sleep in the evening.

I also love going through @kemperrose 's edits bc she's so funny and I make so many stupid little dutch mistakes (we've been working together since Your name, and what that really means, so for exactly a year now)

30. Do you write down all your ideas? What makes you decide to write one versus the other?

Nope! If I want to write a fic I just think of something and get started. Most of the time I also upload it even if it sucks a bit.

3. Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from Homesick for a mountain's song story/chapter? 

Yes, I certainly do! My ultimate favourite scene is the ending scene of chapter 5, where they say sounds together. I think it's such a small scene (in it's energy) but the most powerful one.

I also love the scene where Kana hints that she thinks Naruto and Sasuke are in a relationship and that she accepts them/sasuke in chapter 3. When she says: ��A lot of people become incapable of loving, because of what the world has done to them. It’s a blessing if you still can, even if it’s the last thing you get to keep.’  and ‘I just want you to know that we don’t mind. You and Naruto are always welcome with us. We’re not going to judge you, even if he starts living here permanently.’ 

4. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of Homesick for a mountain's song? 

Hmm.. not really? I changed Sakura a bit while editing. She was a bit more rude to Sasuke in my first versions, bc I wanted to add it to what made Naruto felt conflicted, but I made her more calm eventually. I think that Kishimoto did his female characters dirty, and I don't want that in my fics. I only gave her the normal amount of guarded.

I ended up not writing the party where they "marry". Though i thought about it, I wanted to keep the ending small. The altar for their parents made it to the sequel, but I could say the same for that.

31. What was the development process of Homesick for a mountain's song like? 

Oh.. hmm.. so basically I wrote this story while I was at home with a burn-out, in my graduation year. I was the most broken version of myself when I started this story, and I honestly believed it saved me and me as a writer. I've always been good at enjoying small things and I've always been a calm person. Homesick gave me a place where I could show myself I still had that in me.

With that said... the proces was me getting up way too late, or way too early to watch the sun come up bc I couldn't sleep, and sitting down to write this. I had no plan. I just sat down and wrote. I think it was a distraction and it made me happy. I wanted to write 5 chapters at first, but since me and my readers got attached to the slow chapters it turned into 6 and then into 8.

I posted every chapter right after writing them, and the comments motivated me a lot, though i never expected to get so many. To write this fic, but also to try and write my final work. So... yeah... i think i lived with this story. I somehow ended up still graduating, and it was the same week when i uploaded chapter 8.

Replying to your other ask: know that we're together on that one! Ichiko Aoba makes me feel so nostalgic... or shall I say homesick haha, for nature, for this softness, for late converstations or quiet, for the small things in life. May you live softly! hello, I saw your tags on the wangxian poll and wanted to clarify! The reason it isn't critiqued is because that situation gets addressed in the story. Yes, the characters drink together and lan zhan gets more drunk than wei ying. Then, wei ying, the more sober one initiates with lan zhan.

After it happens, wei ying tries to confess his feelings because he is certain they're on the same page from what happened and the constant gay chicken they were playing but he gets pushed away and then believes he read the situation between them wrong. He reflects in the text that what he did was taking advantage of someone not sober and he genuinely regrets his actions. He apologizes for it to lan zhan, who says that there is no reason to say sorry to him as a response.

This creates the big misunderstanding between them that leads wei ying to finding out lan zhan was in love with him for over 20 years through someone else telling him. He realizes that his gay chicken activity was cruel because lan zhan thought wei ying already knew about his feelings because he confessed before wei ying died, which wei ying doesn't remember. It's implied lan zhan only pushed wei ying away because he assumed wei ying was either messing with him or sleeping with him out of gratitude, instead of it being because he was drunk.

they confess then run off to go do it in the bushes before getting married, and that's when the readers learn that both of them have a cnc kink lmfao. Either way, it's understandable if you or anyone else would still feel uncomfortable about this situation, it's just not very critiqued because the story itself addresses that it was problematic but ultimately not harmful to the character who was drunk and also declined the need for an apology for it.

Hmm, I see. I guess it’s like good the sober character regrets taking advantage of the drunk character and apologies but idk it’s a bit weird imo that the author has the drunk character say an apology isn’t necessary, not to mention having that whole scene between two characters who are meant to be the main lovers in a romance/erotica.

I guess from what I understand is it’s meant to be the catalyst for them to sort out their feelings but I feel such a situation could’ve been done without having a rape scene.

Lan wangji and Lan xichen move away of their uncle claws and open a furniture store that they fix and modify with old furniture. Wei wuxian is a tattoo artist who have a shop with Wen Qing and he and LWJ meet when they crash against each other in the street and LWJ gets hit by accident in the crow jewels, he fall instantly in love and start getting tattoos in WWX shop because he doesn't know how to ask him on a date. Nie Huaisang has a coffee shop or a restaurant (I don't remember very well) that is styled a little bit with bondage things. Nie Mingjue and LXC meet more o less like LWJ and WWX (NMJ get hit down there by accident...) when helping NHS decorating the coffee shop and they become a couple too. In the end Jiang Cheng move close to WWX to run away from his mother and start a love-hate relationship with NHS because hilarious misunderstandings and Jiang Janli helps them to get ride of Lan Qiren and Madam Yu (she's badass). ~ @watsonchaos​
