Some aimless rambling abt my genderfluid Sebastian hc

So this is an idea that i, surprisingly, haven’t seen explored before and i think that is sad. Therefore, i am taking up that responsibility and writing an entire ass essay about this idea that i have.

A few disclaimers:

1: i have no outline for this and am kind of just writing whatever comes into my head, so please forgive any tangents or just general gay nonsense.

2: i am not caught up on the manga, so this is based mainly off of the anime, the small bit of the manga i have read (vol 1-5), my general knowledge of the series, and small tidbits of the story that I’ve picked up from various sources

3: I am counting all of Black Butler as part of the same story. I know there are people who only use the manga canon when analysing Black Butler, but I prefer to assume that if something is true in, for example, season 1 it will be true in season 3. So if ur manga-only or just one of those ppl who hate everything about the anime, you might wanna leave

So I’ve basically had this idea ever since i saw this manga panel

Honestly, when i look at this image, all i can think of is my intense gender envy for this guy AND how genderqueer it is. And that is for multiple reasons. One being that, in general, shapeshifter characters are often coded genderfluid due to the simple fact that they can turn into anything, and that would clearly include another gender. One notable example of this being Nimona. A character that, similarly to Sebastian, normally takes a single human form. But they also occasionally take the forms of different people or even animals. I’m not sure if it’s fully canon, but it’s pretty much agreed that Nimona is genderfluid.

Another reason is that fucking text. “I am no one, yet i can become anyone” you mean you can become a woman 🤨? Ayo? In all seriousness though, that is a very genderqueer thing to say. The idea of “being no one” sounds very non-binary in its own right, but pair that with the "becoming anyone" line, there is a very clear parrallel to the idea of being genderfluid or non-binary.

Sebastian is also just super queer-coded in general. Always going on about his "aesthetic" and have y'all seen those fucking high heels? He is shown to be not tradtionally masculine, what with his long and unkempt hair, black nails (i know it's implied that that just happens when demons take a human form, but i like to imagine they all just paint their nails bc it looks cool), and occupation with fashion and his looks. He has an interesting tendancy to flirt with literally everyone he talks to, including multiple men.

Overall, he is a very genderbending character. He is very effeminate, wears the pointest high heels known to man in his demon form, and is generally very queer coded. Although we aren't really given much info on demon lore, especially when it comes to things like gender, but we do know that angels have the ability to shift from a male body to a female one in a matter of seconds. Ash Landers is another character that I beleive to be at least very coded genderfluid. He has to ability to just...become a woman on a whim and also seems to hate the idea of binary gender. He describes man's separation by gender as the genisis of evil, for god's sake. It is fair to assume that demons live by the same rules.

a/n: tbh I completely forgot what part I’m on 😅 so we’re just going to say we’re on part 5 of the headcanon. Also if I’m not accurate on some of the events forgive me, I haven’t been catching up yet.

Warning: SPOILERS from the manga, if you haven’t read the manga and don’t want to be spoiled please don’t read:)

You couldn’t bear to watch the news anymore, watching as one by one heroes telling the public that they plan on retiring after the defeat. Of course people were mad who was going to protect them from the villains escaping the prison? You thought about All For One, if he escaped prison then… you quickly turned off the TV.

You pulled your knees to your chest, Toshinori told you to stay put and not leave the house after the hospital. Yet every small noise you heard in the house would make you jump, it only made you think someone was sneaking in the house ready to take you back to your father.

You didn’t want to be scared of him, but you honestly didn’t even know what he wanted with you. The quirk you were born with wasn’t even powerful, you’re only able to control water it’s not like with Todoroki who can make it into ice. You stared at your reflection from the TV, your eyes were bloodshot red from the lack of sleep you’ve gotten. The bags underneath your eyes were starting to get worse as well, you didn’t want to remain afraid of All For One.

That’s when you decided to go back to U.A, Toshinori wanted you to stay home knowing AFO or the villains wouldn’t look for you at home, but you didn’t want to be weak anymore. You didn’t want to be afraid of AFO anymore, if the students from U.A we’re going to stop him then you wanted to be by their side fighting along with them, you quickly go and fetch your hero costume before making your way to U.A

Toshinori of course was pissed that you walked over to U.A and ends up telling you that you could’ve been attacked or kidnapped, but after that ends up hugging you and saying he’s glad that you’re at least alright. After that the rest of classroom 1-A fills you on the plan, you could see the determination in their eyes especially in Midoriya’s.

With that some of the students went to their position, you didn’t telling Midoriya or anyone else you’re plan. Yet you decided that if you saw All For One then you would be the one to confront him, you wanted answers that you didn’t get to ask him during his time at the prison. You weren’t going to walk away either this time, even if it meant he would try to kill you.

So when you did finally end up seeing him you didn’t expect him to use Eri’s quirk to reverse what Toshinori did to him during their fight, your chest felt tight and you felt your breathing come out too short and quick. You almost went into a full panic attack when All For One finally laid his eyes on you, making you freeze in place. It wasn’t like last time where Bakugo came to your rescue and placed himself in front of you, Bakugo runs through your mind again realizing what happened to him.

You didn’t want to look back because the moment you saw Shigaraki and bakugo fighting, you wanted to scream for Bakugo to run. He was stubborn though and wouldn’t do that… so neither would you. All For One gives you a smile it’s almost warm, if he wasn’t a villain that is. You could hear yells in the coms as Toshinori tells you to run, but you told yourself you wouldn’t. So you won’t even as he approaches you.

You stand your ground you can tell All For One finds it amusing, once he’s near you; you glance up at him.

“What did you say last time I saw you daughter of mine?” You get your quirk ready as you see All For One lift his hand before placing it down gently on your head.

“I guess you were wrong.”

Just something to add in your list of reasons why Boruto sucks, the last few chapters we have this character Eida whose main power is that everyone falls in love with her except if you are an otsutski or have a karma. So only Boruto and Kawaki are not affected by her (it’s not shown yet if her powers will affect Naruto and Sasuke since they haven’t encountered her face to face).

And Eida developed this crush on Kawaki when she learned that Kawaki will not be affected by her powers, as she wants to experience a person to really like her not just because of her powers. So in order to get her in Konoha’s side they bargained Kawaki to her (it was Shikamaru’s idea but off course approved by Naruto) so now they are cohabitating in one house (Eida, her brother, Kawaki and Boruto) like big brother style where everyone gets monitored and they can talk to people outside of the house. In one scene we can see Kawaki sleeping on her lap after he got knocked off by her brother, I think? And she is blushing furiously around Kawaki.

This story line is so weird, and Eida’s character design is no different than the other pre-teen kunoichi as her clothes are too short. I’m starting to think that Ikemoto have a thing for women’s bare legs 🙄 and the manga is released once a month however I still feel like reading a weekly issued shounen manga. In my opinion the story didn’t move much this year as they introduced these new characters.

Well the overall story telling really sucks, you really can’t feel the same passion for story telling that we experienced before in Naruto. And I just want Naruto and Sasuke to be out of this circus already.

Yeah.. I mean I know about the character but I haven't reached that part of the "story" yet but it honestly sounds like a bad y/n fic. I wonder if they asked Esaka and her smug attitude to take part in the writing. I saw my friend ranting about the "cohabitating in one house" scene but what the hell are they doing? It's all just fan service at this point. Creepy and weird. A disservice to all its previous foundation/setup. Like some Netflix reality series in Shonen format so you can gossip about it on social media like they're human beings or something. It's so weeeiirrrdd.

Sigh. Did they ever ask themselves why they bothered to make this sequel? Why bother telling this story anyway? Their intentions are pretty clear that it's profit only and that is frustrating sure, but there is so much labor that goes into creating something like this. Why not make it worth it. I honestly don't get it. So much potential wasted even if Naruto's ending left people disappointed. Stories can work wonders. It is such a powerful tool they have in their hands and with such a developed world already existing how can you screw it up so badly? That takes skill. Kishimoto created the story and with that in mind started drawing the characters, its world, the expressions, thought of camera angles and the panels there was a lot of passion that went into Naruto. 'Boruto' should've never been made, ever.

And now an overly detailed breakdown after the cut!

Faramir, oh, Faramir. I love Faramir. He's such a good person. The quote is just... so good. The goals are aligned, the humility is there. He's just so shaped and I get pulled to him every time creatively.

Kenshin! Rurouni Kenshin was the first manga I read all the way through as a teen. I was really struck by his words to Megumi and the concept of repentance coming from a non-Christian point of view. On top of that, I am always drawn to hyper competent characters that do not act like it. Rowan has this air of shyness that belies her strength and ability and I draw that DIRECTLY from Kenshin.

Keladry, my beloved. I remember picking up Lady Knight at my middle school library and being like, "Oh shit, this is exactly what I want in life." And she really lived up to the expectations! The whole Protector of the Small quartet is really fascinating, and a lot of Rowan's defending the weak is from Keladry.

Tiffany Aching. I'm still working my way through the Discworld, but my local library had all of Tiffany's books so I read through them. And they are so good! The part that really stuck with me is weaponizing selfishness for good. Like, these are MY people, how DARE you touch them. Her coming of age arc is really well done too! So that gets put into Rowan as well.

Leslie Knope. What does a shy blue elf have to do with Leslie Knope??? Well a lot of the Rowan/Urianger dynamic is based off of the Ben/Leslie dynamic. Two very competent people who are just perpetually amazed by the other and support the other. Also, a touch of awkwardness on Rowan's part may be drawn from her.

Ann Elliot. So I haven't finished reading Persuasion, but so far this is the most compatible heroine of Austen's to Rowan. I'm chipping away at a regency AU because I saw the reviews for Netflix's shitty adaptation of it and it gave me enough spite to start writing it XD.  But I'm really liking Ann as a character as well! She's quiet and tries to do the best by others, often to her detriment (which Rowan does far too often).

Aesthetically I had a hard time figuring it out. Because I have a hard time figuring out aesthetics in my real life! But here's what I have here:

Music sheets. Rowan is a bard, and she even took music lessons as a kid until it got boring for her.

Stars. She's a night owl and is romantically involved with an Astrologian. Figures.

So this picture comes from a post of 20's romantic photos. It's very much the type of aesthetic I aim for Aether and Anatomy.

Rowan is a woodsy gal and I honestly just love the sunlight peaking through the trees.

Capybaras are probably the animal I mostly ascosiate Rowan with. Because she's just a calm influence that makes others calm. Just like a capybara!

BEEP BEEP BEEP…BEEP BEEP BEEP, ugh why does the alarm always go off during the best parts of the dream. You lazily wake up to turn your phone alarm off. Your eyes are heavy, your panties are wet, and the urge to try to redream the dream is there but you can’t afford to be late again.

You grunt and roll out of bed. Your Keurig is already prepping your coffee as you make your way to your bathroom. The Keurig was the best purchase you made this year. After looking in the mirror you tell your self that you need to stop drinking on work nights…or maybe just in general. Your face is puffy and eyes are gloomy.

“06:30, I have time to take a quick shower and pick a decent outfit,” you say as you start the shower.

30 minutes later you settled on a basic dress, vans and an old necklace. It’s hot today in Japan and the last thing you need to do is sweat is some ugly ass suite. Normally you like suites but your boss has been a dickhead and changed the dress code, again, to either long dresses or basic suites.

“Ughh I need a new job” you tell your self as you prep your coffee.

You take one last look around your apartment to ensure you have everything you need before exiting the door.

You like to walk to work. It’s a 25 minute walk..sounds like a lot but it’s only one anime episode long. You turn our headphones on and start the newest episode of “Jujutsu Kaisen”.

You’ve been a fan of this manga ever since it came out and when it turned into an anime, you were so excited!! You, yourself have been doing jujutsu since you were a kid. As a daughter of a Lee clan, you were more of forced into it. But since your dad’s death….you stopped. He died last year. And your brother has been rogue for 7 years, so the family has been begging you to come and take your dad’s place. As much as loved your dad, you saw what it did, the people that wanted him dead, and what it did to your family. Last thing you want is to be involved in a world of nothing but hurt and lose.

You finished the episode as soon as you hit the door to your bldg. The bldg is tall, all glass windows, and dark…unpractical. You’ve seen enough action movies and anime to know that this would be the first bldg destroyed in a matter of minutes.

At your desk a pile of paperwork was waiting, mockingly. The downside of being a good worker is you get burnt out…jujutsu was so much easier or rewarding at least.

“Welp, lets get to work,” you tell yourself….as you think about the dream you had. For the past 3 months, each night has been the same: you meet this guy, he turns out to be something, and you two are in bed. Even the imagine of him is blurry but you can tell he is strong and tall.

You shake your head, maybe taking a break from watching anime will help….

“1800 and I’m finally done,” you let out a sigh of exhaustion. Office job. Honestly who the hell thought that being in an office job was fun and great. The money is ehh and the workload is overwhelming. It’s boring. People are just okay with doing this shit forever.

“How did Nanami do it?”, you think to yourself. Not a day goes by when you aren’t thinking about Jujutsu Kaisen characters. The man went from sorcerer to office job, back to sorcerer. “Maybe I should do the same….”you think out loud.

It’s dark out in Japan, the air smells like it’s about to rain. You cross the street where restaurants are filled with people. The smell of fried shrimp, chicken and men laughing fill the air. As you continue walking you look up in the sky, you can see the lighting in the clouds and hear the thunder rolling in…if you don’t quicken your step, you will be caught in this storm.

10 mins away from the apartment complex the drizzle starts to happen, thunder getting louder. “Please no….just wait like 10 mins…please God,” you please. Two options, take the next bus that comes in 15 minutes or run for the next 5…..Of course your brain says “run”…..you never take the normal human way of doing shit.

You wake up, in a dark room….nothing is tied to you, you are breathing and your hands are free. You slowly start to assess your body. Hair, mouth, eyes, chest, legs, arms….fingers, toes…bag…everything is still there. Shoes are still on. “What the fu..” you are cut off.

“You are alive, thank God”, a small voice says as lights start to turn on. Your eyes take a minute to adjust before seeing this person.

Small, black hair, white shirt tucked into black pants…and weird floating thing behind him…what in the actual fuck. Why does this person look familiar, like you’ve seen him before.

“Sensei said to bring you here. Sorry about the blast. It didn’t hit you but it was enough to knock you off your feet and hit your head on the sidewalk. I healed you. We will have to stay here until he comes.” The voice trailed off.

Sensei. Healed. What in the Jujutsu Kaisen is this shit?!?

You look at the figure, your eyes more adjusted. His eyes lock yours. NO FUCKING WAY….AM I…

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Yuta, can me and y/n, have a minute,” he calmy says. You look to see a tall, nicely leaned man. He has a blindfold on. GoJo. This can not be real. Jujutsu Kaisen is real or this dream just took another level…

“You are not dreaming. And yes Jujustsu Kaisen is real.” he replies. “You are talking out loud,” he laughs.

“Anyway, lets get to it. You are part of the Lee Clan….and your brother…well he is becoming a probably for us. We need your help to find him.” He looks at you. Damn, he is hotter in person…and damn what in the underground shit is this.

“I haven’t seen him in 7 years…” you trail off. 7 years ago he walked out on your family. Your older brother said “bye” and that was it. No words. No nothing. Honestly starting to think he is dead.

“I’m aware. But you know your family better than anyone. And quite frankly this has become a bigger issue. If this was easy we wouldn’t be asking you to help. I know you gave up jujutsu last year. Your dad was a great man. He did many things for this place.” He stops.

“My dad did what….” you are surprised. Your dad has known that this was real and didn’t say anything. Hell if you knew, you would’ve quiet your office job like forever ago and joined your father…then maybe he’d still be alive.

“I think you have me and my family mistaken. Aside from my brother and the Clan name…we are just people who do jujutsu..nothing more.” you tell him. I mean, if there is some sort of sorcerer power and you don’t know than rudeeee.

“He said you would be difficult. He also said that he never told you the full truth of your family, so I see why this is all a surprise. Regardless of this all, I just need you to help us. Obviously there’s training involved but I’m not sending you on anything my sorcerers do….just need your brother.” he is getting slightly annoyed. GoJo thinks to himself: How does she not know….well to be fair one day she’s living a life as a “regular person” who likes to do jujutsu to finding out that she is actually a sorcerer. Sadly, he never told her because of his fear of what her brother did. But I don’t get that sense from her. She likes jujutsu….and has been contemplating taking her dad’s place. So many questions.

“Why”, is all you can think of right now. Am I a sorcerer, who really was my dad….Lee’s were not the type to keep secrets…..

Gojo groans, “Can we at least go to Jujutsu High and talk about things there….this place is boring and I’m pretty sure things will make more sense after you watch the video.”

So moody. “Fine”.

Jujutsu high is literally like the anime. Quiet. Except for the students who are yelling at each other. A few of the other sensei’s look over at you and whisper to each other…this video better have it all.

“I’ll take it from here, sensei” Yuta says. Gojo nods, looks at you laughs 😂 and nods again. This man 😒

“Sorry he can be…umm.. kind of childish. Please sit in this desk. Here is the laptop. It’s the video. It’s the video your dad wanted you to watch….I guess instead of sending it to you, he sent it here. In hopes we would track you down.” Yuta stops. He gives you a shy grin and leaves.

The video was 20 minutes long. This was taken 5 days before his death. He was killed by someone names Kamo…Kamo something..at this point I didn’t care. Just tell me what I need to know. And there it was….13 minutes and 30 seconds into the video:

That’s why you were my best student. I’m sorry I kept this secret from you. I didn’t want you or your brother involved in this world. But your brother found out…by someone who is very evil y/n. I know it’s hard to believe and what I’m about to say is going to hurt, but just know I love you and always have like you were my own. But y/n, your real parents, the original God and Goddess of sorcery, died. After having you, they were no longer needed. So they dropped you off to me and that was it. You look and see all the sorcerers looking up at you. You sit on the floor. The wind howling. Some old fart is yelling at GoJo.

My notes for a Death Battle that was out in May...

Let’s start off with a confession: I think this episode had the worst research job I’ve done. Thor had the most content out of anyone I’ve researched before so I figured “most of Thor’s stuff will probably be recent, so I’ll read the new stuff while seeing respect threads and finding the original sources to see if they hold up”. So when I found out Thor at the time had the Odinforce I was like “welp, Thor with Odinforce should easily win.”

So I found some great feats of recent time, with a personal favorite of mine is hurting the Chaos King. At the time, he ate about 98% of the Marvel Multiverse. And ignoring the infinite claims, the highest numbered universe was  28,744,923,048,932. And since the Marvel Universe is 21.5 times bigger than ours at lowest, that means the damage he did to the Chaos King was 630,628,410,000,000 Universes. For Broly’s number to reach that back in Hulk Vs Broly, and giving him 13 Universes at base, he would need to be increased by 48,509,877,692,307.69 times. That means Thor at this time is at least a hundred times more powerful than Broly’s best estimate.

So when I found out Thor was not going to be given the Odinforce (because at the time we thought it was only going to be temporary), I was kind of bummed out. But with Liam’s help, we were able to get a good estimate of Thor’s abilities without the Odinforce and still determined the winner. And what should happen before the Death Battle comes out?

Odin reveals the Odinforce Thor had since I started research was only part of it. In other words, all those feats I’ve mentioned could have been fair game. The writer doesn’t reveal what portion it is (because who cares other than us Vs people) but if it was 1% then DANG! Though I think 50% is the most fair assessment. 

Now to Vegeta stuff. I haven’t read the Manga version prior to this and I am not a fan, but this episode he got them and Anime. So when Spirit Fission was brought to the table two things were a concern: could Vegeta use it on Thor’s hammer and could Vegeta resist the energy absorption in the first place. Now I thought Spirit Fission means he could resist it, but apparently Moro beat him by absorbing his energy despite being weaker at the time. Like dude, what was the point of that if it was back to square one.

And then I found out about Ultra Ego. When I first heard the description of it, my first thought was “so its basically Yang’s Semblance”. A Tumblr post came out also saying that Vegeta was basically using Goku Black’s tactic. While Ultra does argue that the movie tagline is too vague to mean the Manga isn’t canon, I honestly hope it isn’t. It just feels like poorly written to me.

How is it poorly written? A tumblr called Dragonball Meta explains it perfectly, but an example I can give is the Kefla/Gohan fight. I heard so much big things like “whoa, this means Gohan is Ultra Instincts level” and when I saw it it was so unimportant it might as well not even happen. And of course, the meme of Piccolo, of all people, saying Vegeta’s never been one to misread an opponent’s strength, when that’s a common trope.

Which leads to one more thing about Vegeta: the recent Kari Vs Vegeta storyline was inspired by this fight. It made me want to write Vegeta my way after establishing him as someone who is raising his son over fighting, but still wanting to keep up with his old rival. Since mine takes place after the Cell Games, I wanted to bring the Vegeta that realized the truth to my work and see if I can pull off a Vegeta that remembers that but still wants to improve.

Regarding a Common Misconception of Hakuba Saguru

Lately I've been doing some reflecting on Saguru & the various ways I've seen him portrayed, as well as the ways I've portrayed him in the past. And then I was rereading some MK manga, and had some realizations. I've been feeling like rambling about them! So here I go, rambling.

[Disclaimer: I'm not personally taking issue with anyone's interpretation or impression of Saguru - just sharing my own impressions! This is just for fun <3 ]

Misconception: Saguru is constantly accusing Kaito of being KID

It’s a generally accepted fact in a lot of fics I’ve read (and honestly, maybe some fics I’ve written -- I used to hold this belief too!) that Saguru just unendingly insinuates that Kaito is KID--alone, in front of other people, always.

I won’t cite any here, but I’ve seen nods in fanwork to Aoko feeling a little stressed/frustrated about the fact that Saguru thinks Kaito is KID and makes it known. I’ve also seen fanwork where Saguru explicitly calls Kaito KID, presses Kaito for information, or otherwise makes his beliefs clear, even when others are around.

There are only five scenes in the Magic Kaito manga where Saguru makes direct indication toward his knowledge of KID’s identity.

First, of course, we’ve got chapter 17 - the first chapter where Saguru puts together that Kaito is KID.

For a long time, when I’d consumed more fic than MK canon, I recall an image born in my head of Saguru singling Kaito out in class and making the claim that Kaito is KID in front of everybody. I don’t know if I ever read any such allusion in a fic, or if it’s just an assumption I drew based on portrayals I read, but imagine my surprise when he does nothing of the sort.

Now, to be fair, Saguru is A LOT in this chapter. MK is still heavily in gag manga territory, so his behavior is extra extra played up. But if we take away the visuals, the dialogue between Saguru and Kaito can be summed up thusly:

[First scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]

Kaito: You look so tired. Haven’t gotten enough sleep after chasing KID for three nights In a row, huh?

Saguru: Hmph. Aren’t you tired as well?

And then, a few beats later in the conversation:

Saguru: I’d like to invite you to the Ochima Art Museum tonight, where KID’s declared his next target. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: Then, you’ll understand why I’m so tired. Or, do you have other plans tonight? Kaito: Okay, I accept your invitation. It’ll be great to see your work in action!

And that’s it, that’s the big class confrontation. Aoko is present for it, but she’s more interested in joining in on the fun, and while I do think Aoko pieces together that Kaito is KID, she prefers to live in willful ignorance of it until it becomes impossible for her to ignore. She’s bright enough to pick up what Saguru’s implying, but because he never brings it past implication, there’s no reason for her to look at it too hard. Anyway, I digress. That’s conjecture and headcanon talking. My point is that Saguru never makes any explicit claims, just invites Kaito along to the heist.

Another neat thing about this scene is that--while certainly not motivated by mercy in this case, Saguru does give Kaito an out: “Or, do you have an excuse not to go tonight?” Of course, if Kaito took it, it would be rather damning, but I do think it would have been enough confirmation for Saguru. I don’t think there would have been any arm-twisting to get Kaito to agree.

But Kaito and Saguru are competitive bastards, so here we are.

Let’s move on to the heist!

Once again, the manga certainly plays up the whole ordeal. Saguru is intense and waiting for his moment, and Kaito’s being, well, Kaito.

At the heist, there are a few points where Saguru has opportunities to make allusions to Kaito being KID in a way others would pick up on, or otherwise make his suspicions known, but he doesn’t.

First of all, is this exchange:

Nakamori: Why are you guys here? Aoko: Hakuba-kun invited us! Nakamori: What’s the meaning of this, Hakuba-kun? Saguru: I thought she might like to see if KID is arrested tonight. Nakamori: You’ll fail if you’re too cocky! Saguru: We’re well-prepared. Besides, who knows… KID may already be here.

Saguru does imply KID could be present, but he makes no indication that he means Kaito. His next opportunity to hint at Kaito being KID or otherwise make accusations is when Nakamori asks him to consult as a magician.

Nakamori: Kaito, since you’re here, do you want to use your magic against KID? Kaito: [laughing sheepishly] Saguru: Oh, I want to see that fight, too. If you really can do it.

Needling, yes. Saguru knows what he’s saying and so does Kaito. Accusations, no. This is well within the realm of something Saguru would have said even if he didn’t suspect Kaito, considering their dynamic up until this point.

And then, the most explicit Saguru ever gets in terms of literally calling Kaito out as being KID, beginning when Kaito excuses himself to go to the bathroom right before the heist:

Saguru: [handcuffs himself to Kaito] Kaito: Huh? Saguru: I won’t let you do that, Kuroba. Kaito: What do you think you’re doing?! Saguru: I got the report back from the lab. The hair I got from KID indicated that he’s a high school student. After I compared KID’s data with other high school students’ data in the database… Kuroba Kaito came up in the final list. Kaito: That’s a coincidence. Saguru: Really? We’ll see soon enough. Let’s wait until the time KID is stated to come. [Some heist hubbub occurs as officers get into position even though KID hasn’t arrived at the heist time] Aoko: What? KID’s not coming? Saguru: Ha! It looks like I win! You’d better confess who you really are.

And from there, of course, ‘KID’ (Akako in disguise) swoops in and takes care of the heist. That more or less wraps up chapter 17, the first chapter where Saguru understands that Kaito is KID. And I would argue this is the most aggressive Saguru ever is. In fact, rather than persist in trying to accuse/capture/implicate Kaito as KID, he straight up vanishes from the narrative for several chapters.

Saguru doesn’t show up again until the Chat Noir heist, in chapter 25, when he calls from France.

It’s also important to note that at this point, Magic Kaito’s narrative has experienced a slight tonal shift. At the very least, while still often comedic, it reads less like a gag manga. Between the last time we saw Saguru and now, we’ve learned the apparent motivation behind Toichi’s murder, we’ve met Snake (an albeit rather incompetent villain) and Kaito has faced down gunfire and the danger posed by Snake and his men.

The way Saguru is portrayed has also shifted to reflect the shift too. Instead of a hulking antagonist-like character in a Holmes cosplay, he’s dressed primly and presents more as a cheeky but polite character. He’s also more effectively emulating the charm that the story tried to imply he had early on (“Hakuba Saguru, at your service!”, the girls in class fawning over him, the newspaper calling him out as a famous detective making a long-awaited return to Japan).

The interaction is entirely less antagonistic, too. For reference, I’ll paste the exchange (sans Saguru’s massive info dump) below.

[At the heist for the golden eye] Kaito: [Hiding in a bathroom stall while putting on a disguise] [His phone starts ringing] Hello…? Saguru: Hi, it’s been a while. Are you still alive? Kaito: [Thinking] This sugary yet obnoxious tone of voice is... Hakuba?! Saguru: You’ve made quite the stir in Paris. They’re all talking about how France’s Chat Noir is going to go up against you in Japan. Kaito: Idiot! It’s not me. It’s Kaitou KID! Saguru: Ha… it doesn’t really matter. I’ll share some information that I gathered over here. [Info dump cut from dialogue] Well! That’s about all I have to say. Do your best. I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself. Kaito: Like I’ve been saying, I’m not KID! Saguru: Oops, it’s almost time for the Paris Fashion Week. See you! Kaito: H-hey…

The only part of this conversation that I could consider to fall into the territory of antagonistic is when Saguru says “I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself.” And more than anything, I think this is less reflective of a real desire to capture Kaito, and more reflective of his competitive nature. Not to mention, within the context of the conversation, it feels much more like teasing than anything.

Saguru’s motivation for making the call is clear: He doesn’t want Kaito to lose, and he wants to help ensure Kaito’s success.

And most interestingly (although I’d like to see the raw manga to confirm this, or otherwise a more literal translation) he never explicitly calls Kaito KID either. Outside of alluding to KID’s actions, Saguru doesn’t explicitly say Kaito is KID or mention KID at all. It’s Kaito who does that.

When Kaito points out that he is not, in fact, KID, Saguru doesn’t argue. He simply brushes off the denial and shares the information he’s collected.

So, to summarize what we’ve covered so far: after Saguru failed to arrest Kaito during chapter 17, he stopped troubling Kaito so thoroughly that the next time he features in the story isn’t until he’s calling from overseas to try to lend Kaito some helpful information. He’s not even playing a part in trying to capture this thief he allegedly wants to catch.

And then, Saguru dips back out of the narrative, although for a shorter period this time. The next arc he appears in is a few chapters later--the Nightmare Heist which he arrives in the middle of. But, there’s not any interaction between him and Kaito, nor any allusions made by Saguru about KID’s identity, so we’ll move on.

The fourth time Saguru makes any indication that Kaito is KID is during the Corbeau arc, when KID is being challenged by a clad-in-black KID lookalike.

Before jumping into that specific scene, though, there’s another interaction I’d like to call attention to--between Saguru and Nakamori. Not because of something Saguru says, but because of what he doesn’t say.

Nakamori: Hahaha! Looks like you let your guard down because you thought I was at home with a cold! Saguru: Our plan succeeded, it seems. Nakamori: But I only told Aoko I had a cold, so how does KID know…? Saguru: Hm...

If Saguru were wanting to make some kind of accusation, even a non-explicit one, he would have made some remark. Instead, he doesn’t say anything at all, which continues to speak to the fact that he isn’t really interested in implicating Kaito.

Anyway, the next time Saguru makes any sort of implication that Kaito is KID he is, once again, trying to help. Last time it was over the phone, so the conversation was private. This time, the conversation is in a classroom, although based on the panels, it seems like Saguru and Kaito are alone at the beginning--or at least, no attention is being paid to them.

Kaito: [Talking to himself] It must be the case, there’s no other way. There must have been some trick with the case.

Saguru: [Eavesdropping, apparently alone in the room with him] The case didn’t contain any hidden mechanisms. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: No hidden doors or things like that, as are often used in magic tricks. Kaito: W-what on earth are you talking about? Saguru: A new notice from Corbeau arrived this morning. ‘I’ll come and take the real Midnight Crow tonight.’ My name is Hakuba--so I don’t want a ‘white’ person to lose to some ominous black crow. [From here, Akako and then Aoko jump into the conversation.]

Surely a classroom is a risky place to have a conversation about KID, but the nice thing is that Saguru--once again--doesn’t bring up KID at all beyond saying that he doesn’t want the ‘white[-clad] person’ to lose to the black crow. From the outside looking in, all he’s doing is sharing information about the case with Kaito. It may also seem unwarranted from that perspective, but not at all implicating.

Also, another thing I’d like to call attention to is that when Akako joins the conversation (and seemingly blindsides Saguru, as if he wasn’t expecting anyone else to join), Saguru stops talking. He continues to be quiet when Aoko chimes in, and he doesn’t have any relevant dialogue for the rest of the scene.

Once again, Saguru’s clearly motivated to share information in the interest of helping Kaito. He has to share with Kaito’s civilian identity, since he can’t exactly arrange a conversation with KID, and this is likely the easiest way for him to do it. He makes no accusations, and this time he doesn’t even imply he wants KID caught.

So--Saguru is a part of the narrative again, but since rejoining the narrative he seems less interested in actually catching KID and far more interested in helping Kaito. And no accusations or incriminating allusions have been made since chapter 17, before Saguru’s first hiatus from the story.

The final time Saguru nods to Kaito being KID is from the Sun Halo arc. This is probably the interaction that’s closest to what fanon tends to depict when it comes to Saguru making subtle accusations that Kaito is KID. And even then, I tend to take this arc with a grain of salt if only because it felt less like Gosho was trying to add to the story and more like he was just trying to make a Magic Kaito addition that hit various fan expectations while still being wildly disappointing, lmao.

[Fifth scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]

Saguru: [approaching and commenting on Kaito’s motorcycle] I see, a Suzuki GSX 250R. Akako: Ah, Hakuba-kun… Saguru: You’ve shown me something interesting. Perhaps this might help the police tonight. And could it be that you’ve forgotten… that the only motorised bikes we’re allowed to ride to school are scooters? Kaito: Eh?! For real?!

Once again, Saguru doesn’t explicitly mention KID at all--and segues from his mention of the police to pointing out that Kaito is breaking the rules right now, actually, which helps blend this teasing comment into the conversation.

Yes, later in the chapter Saguru does show up with a team of motorcycle experts. But that also means there’s more disguise opportunities for KID and more factors to account for, thus complicating things for, well, everyone--not just KID.

Also, I tend to dismiss that as Gosho throwing in some comedy, and as less to do with Saguru’s character. Call it cherrypicking if you like :P

To recount--there are five times where Saguru implies Kaito is KID.

The first two are in chapter 17, when Saguru first puts it together, and it is during this chapter that he gets the most explicit about calling Kaito out as KID, as well as the most aggressively he behaves about it. And he backs off so hard after that doesn’t work, that we don’t see him for several chapters.

The next two times he implies Kaito is KID are both in order to help him. No aggression or accusations, just the sharing of information. Even when teasing or suggesting he’s interested in catching KID, he’s good-natured about it, and when he realizes there are potentially people witnessing the conversation, he stops participating.

The final time he implies Kaito is KID is a tiny comment about finding something Kaito has shown him ‘interesting’ and ‘helpful for the police’ before smoothing into gently teasing Kaito for bringing an illegal vehicle to school.

In conclusion, Saguru may start off apparently aggressive in part thanks to early Magic Kaito’s overall tone, but rather than persevering in trying to catch Kaito after cornering him in chapter 17, he actually seems to back off. Once he’s playing a part in the narrative again, when he interacts with Kaito it’s almost exclusively to help him. Yes, he is on the task force and participating at heists, but where it matters, he’s less interested in catching the thief and far more interested in those the thief is opposing (excluding the police force).

Sorry for replying this late. I’m gonna add some manga panels (read right to left) to explain better.

The answer is simple: because no one is just evil.

Let’s start by saying first and foremost: massacring an entire village, whether it’s mainly composed of criminals or not, is always wrong and unjustifiable. Period.

This is also the reason why Atem is so shocked when he finds out about it and why Akhenaden (and also his Pharaoh brother Akhenamkhanen) kept it a secret in the first place. Cause it’s bad. Period.

Now let’s go back to the narrative:

Forget everything you ever saw in the anime (both sub and dub) because Memory World/Season 5 just doesn’t make sense there - and most events were changed/removed from how they were in the manga to make the “good guys” appear better (to name a few examples: the soldiers sent by Akhenaden being somehow brainwashed to do the massacre, Diabound being sealed in some random hidden tablet underground and not coming directly from TKB’s soul, the golden duel disks you have to wear to summon the KAs instead of just using the Items, Thief King being the whole time possessed by Yami Bakura that in the anime is literally just Zorc so he doesn’t care abt his revenge, Atem saying a bunch of few more sympathetic lines he never said in canon, all if not most lines from TKB being completely removed, etc.) All these things don’t make sense if you follow the manga narrative and in fact, they don’t happen.

Akhenden does the massacre because in order to create the Millennium Items 99 human sacrifices were required. He could have chosen anyone. Volunteers, some form of “martyrs” ready to die to protect their Pharaoh, the fuck do I know... but what he did was a clear massacre aimed at a poor village “of thieves” that the palace people always despised because of their history: 

Kul Elna.

Soldier 1: “Kul Elna Village...?! The place called the ‘‘Village of Thieves’’?”

The village of Kul Elna seems to be based on the real-life ancient city “Deir el-Medina” since it was a city of “grave robbers descended from Royal tomb builders”, just like Kul Elna.

It’s even mentioned in the wiki:

Here is an interesting article about grave robbers in Deir el-Medina, and it’s said that the city was literally called, like, “a city of robbers” for how organised and common it was for them to rob the royal graves in the Valley of the Kings. It was a city that has been originally created by the Royals to house the artisans and tomb builders that laboured for the Royals near the Valley of the Kings. It also makes sense (and it’s also written in the article) how these thieves knew best how to rob the tombs because they build them themselves.

“...inflation and delay of rations made it extremely harder for the villagers to live, leaving them to rob the tombs they once built to keep themselves and their family alive.”

Akhenaden targeted that village on purpose. He specifically targeted Kul Elna BECAUSE THEY WERE GRAVE ROBBERS and it was convenient to kill them. They were “just grave robbers” and were thereby not loyal to the Pharaoh. If you think about the fact that robbing a Royal tomb used to be one of the biggest capital crimes back then, it also explains it. So Akhenaden’s thoughts on the matter were practically “killing two birds with one stone”.

In the anime the guards/soldiers were in someway “hypnotised” to follow Akhenaden’s order which is bullshit and how the hell can he perform such magic all of a sudden duh? . In the manga they enjoyed doing the massacre completely lucid:

Soldier: “Heh heh... you thieves... As punishment for robbing graves... you bastards will become a part of the treasure!”

99 people were sacrificed and used in the ritual (as seen above in the panel: they’ve been melted with gold), but many more were killed and left to die.

As you can see, bodies were left to rot among the ruins, even if they weren’t used for the sacrifice. Akhenaden made sure to exterminate any living proof of the village - also to keep it a secret and let it be forgotten in history.

But one kid survived:

Bakura.

Whether it’s cause he hid well, or maybe his mother made sure that he was well protected, or maybe he happened to have been in the right place at the right time - we don’t know. But destiny wanted him to be alive. To live and tell the tale and to finally take his well-deserved revenge.

Everyone else but him died. Other kids, just like him, died too. How in the world were they all “just evil”???How could an innocent kid like him even be evil, to begin with??? And Bakura is the only character through the whole story that speaks out about it:

Transcript: “Out of lust for power, your Royal Family used Shadow Alchemy to create the seven Millennium Items! There was only a small price... the lives of every man, woman and child in this village!”

Transcript: “That’s what I want! To get revenge for the dark past you tried to hide... the birth of the Millennium Items!!”

Transcript: “‘‘Freedom? Peace?’’ Don’t make me laugh... The Millennium Items are made of good and evil... they’re like a double-edged sword.”

Of course, he believes in the good of the items as well, considering they are literally made out of his innocent people.

Through his whole journey, he grew stronger and he informed himself. He knew what he was talking about. And they removed EVERYTHING he says in the manga from the anime because....... honestly I don’t know why ?? but I believe it’s cause he just slapped too hard with his statements and would have made everyone understand that the villain of the story turns out to be the actual victim of the situation.

I say Bakura was right because there is nothing that can excuse such an atrocious act. There’s no justice in seeing the slaughter of everything you ever knew and all the people you ever loved for the sake of creating weapons used against people like that and just sit back and do nothing about it. 

Bakura was alive for a reason. He stayed alive for a very long time. Even after his death as Thief King Bakura, his soul clung to stay alive as Yami Bakura, at the cost of fusing with a demon, for over 3000 years. And he made sure to give them hell. :))

in terms of popularity do you think Uraraka is popular? like comparing her to the other shonen female leads like sakura, mikasa, nobara/maki(now) or makima? she ranked 16th in the last popularity poll which makes me wonder what is it about her character that hori wrote that failed to stick with the audience? or is just the lack of screentime her character has gotten?

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but this question is a little too meta for me lol.

I'm referring to the surface question rather than what I think you really mean by it. Like, I don't actively keep up with who is popular. I just incidentally might learn about these things. And you referenced a bunch of characters to compare Uraraka to whom...uh...honestly I had to Google some of them lol. I do not read/watch any of those manga/anime.

But I think you're really asking:

In what ways does Uraraka's character hit or miss with the audience? Why does it turn out like this?

First of all, I would just point out that you should note how you phrased the question. You didn't ask me why is Uraraka not as popular as other characters in her own manga, or other popular characters in other popular manga. You compared her to other women characters in other manga, specifically female leads. Uraraka is in many ways a character drawn to fit a token trope of shounen manga.

“Female lead.”

As if a woman can't be the main character of a shounen (they can, see Maka Albarn of Soul Eater and Emma of The Promised Neverland).

As if each manga can only have one female lead (there can be more, see Winry Rockbell and Riza Hawkeye of Fullmetal Alchemist).

I just want people to really consider how we think (or don’t think) about these things. It’s important to examine that.

Second, I’ll knock out the obvious issues with Uraraka’s popularity. She lacks screen time, she lacks meaningful personal motivations and character development outside of her relationship with the male main character, and she’s fairly removed from the main plot of the story. The saddest part is that it didn’t have to be this way.

Third, my general opinion on the matter: Uraraka is popular.

She’s very popular. I don’t think I’ve encountered a person who hasn’t been moved by her character/story. The problem is...we haven’t seen her in years.

I don’t think people hate Uraraka. I don’t think people even dislike her role as a romantic interest for the main character. In the beginning.

She disappeared as a character the moment her crush developed in the final exam arc. When it was Izuku crushing on her, it was cute. Because when Izuku was crushing on her, we got to see what he saw in her. She is a great character. I freaking love her. I also want to believe Izuku loves her, but...he doesn’t think about her anymore??? He doesn’t even think about their friendship that much either. It’s so bizarre. He used to treat her like a queen, and not in that creepy pedestal way (well, aside from how he used to treat EVERYONE like that). Now he barely notices her. I don’t know what to make of that other than the fact that I hate it. They do have some nice friend/romantic moments in the Joint Training arc (season 5) that almost get us back to those basics, but they ultimately don’t go anywhere.

But really, I think people like Uraraka...when she shows up. She just doesn’t often do that. And when she does it’s so brief that it just isn’t enough.

Who is Uraraka the character? I’m talking about the Sports Festival, of course, but I’m also talking about the martial artist.

The reason Uraraka is great...or was...is because she was destined to be a combat character on equal footing with many of the male fighters. She was allowed to get dirty. She was allowed to get ugly. She was allowed to be a mess. She was allowed to be competitive. She was allowed to be intimidating. She was allowed to be scary. She was allowed to be awesome.

Nothing illustrates this better than Bakugou vs. Uraraka.

If I did a poll of reaction YouTube channels watching that episode for the first time, I guarantee 75% minimum would have cried at least once during that episode. Real tears. Because Uraraka’s story, her character, her motivations, they are real. And they are universal. They aren’t feminine or masculine, they are purely relatable.

That’s a big part of why I love it when Uraraka interacts with Bakugou, or Iida, or Kirishima, or Asui, or anyone in a friend/comrade/competitor relationship. She’s so goddamn real, exactly the kind of girl I would expect to enroll in a hero school.

But when she’s forwarding the romance subplot? She’s stale. She’s flat. She’s boring. She’s not real at all. She’s just gone.

A part of me secretly hopes she’s a deconstruction of the female lead/romantic interest trope and fully rejects her crush, not because I have anything against IzuOcha (I don’t, I want it to be more interesting) but because she just deserves better and it’d be a nice twist on such a stale trope. It’d be the only thing that could justify the boring romance subplot, even if it doesn’t justify how boring it is. It could end with some commentary on how love is incompatible with hero work, which is a subplot we’ve seen a few times like with Kouta’s parents. Would that conclusion be worth it? Probably not. But it’s better than nothing, I guess.

I miss feral Uraraka, the one who scared the shit out of Bakugou. I miss her so much. Give her back.

Why I’m scared for Syaoran-Theories

For literal years I have shouted from the mountain tops that I am worried something bad is going to happen to Syaoran in Clear Card. I even stated it in my initial thoughts for spoilers of Chapter 1 back in 2016, so I can confidently say I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. Now here we are 55 chapters and 5 years later, and I’m more worried than ever. 

The thoughts I had were mostly revolving around the when, and I think CLAMP is throwing us some breadcrumbs along the way that we might be missing (or in my case, extremely over analyzing XD).

However, I will tell you that the theories I have about the ‘how’ part, which I have kept mostly to myself until now, begin with a story, and a dream….or several rather.

Under the cut due to length, and forewarning…some of this is going to sound probably crazy and like a wild crack theory. I haven’t talked about up until now out of fear that y’all might think I’m going off the rails. Lmao. So please read with a grain of salt.

For those who have followed me for a while, you might have noticed that I have CCS related dreams quite a bit. And in these dreams, it’s a common theme that nothing good ever happens to Syaoran. Lol. Now, before you say “Hey Chrissy, those are just dreams and mean nothing!”, hear me out.

 Every once in a while, the dreams that I have tend to carry some truth to them or end up actually happening. Please understand I’m not trying to say I’m prophetic or anything, but rather I am a firm believer that dreams are sometimes your brain’s way of finding answers to things that you can’t while you’re awake. Granted, some things I can’t explain, but I promise I’ll get to the point here.

 One specific example I can give here is when the Clear Card manga first started, none of us knew the identity of the Cloaked Figure in any capacity. All we knew was that they were about Sakura’s height and probably wanted her key, and that was really about it. When Akiho showed up in the series, people instantly pointed at her and said “it’s gotta be her”. I admittedly believed it too, but a part of me thought “that just seems too simple”. 

 But then I had a dream.

 I was very confused by it, but I went to my friends on Discord the next day to talk about it. It was July 28th, 2017 (thank goodness for time stamps!). And in that dream, I had seen the Cloaked Figure standing on a telephone pole, staring down into Sakura’s bedroom window. Their hood was down, and I could clearly identify the back of Syaoran’s head. I thought “There’s no way that it could be Syaoran, that wouldn’t make any sense”, so I tried not to think too much about it and dismissed it as just a dream.

 Then came chapter 24 almost a full year later….for those of you who don’t know what chapter this is, the one I’m referring to is when THIS bombshell was dropped on us. 

Needless to say, I was pretty spooked. Not only was my dream right about Syaoran being the Cloaked Figure, but he was even standing in the exact same spot as the scene that occurred in chapter 24. I will even say that this wasn’t the first time either that I had experienced a manga related dream actually happening in some capacity. Back during the serialization of Tsubasa when I was about 15-16 years old, I had a dream of the other Syaoran (or Real Syaoran as some may know him as) appearing before Clone Syaoran in a desert, surrounded by a destroyed city, and when the first chapter of the Acid Tokyo arc came out, I about lost my mind. The moment I saw that destroyed city, I was like “This is where the other Syaoran is going to appear”, and I turned out to be right.

 These dreams could have been a one in a million fluke, never to happen again, but boy have I had a loooooot of dreams over the years, and I’ve been documenting them ever since that Cloaked Figure dream and paying close attention to details, particularly because that was the most accurate one I’ve had so far, and I honestly can’t explain how it happened. But over time I have come to learn how to kind of pick out the dreams I feel actually mean something compared to the ones that are probably just a result of me thinking a lot about CCS.

 With that in mind, there has been one reoccurring theme in some of the CCS related dreams that I’ve had, and that was the presence of this scary, black goop like entity that doesn’t have a figure. The only thing I can really say about it is it was alive but certainly not human. I had the first dream about this entity even before the Cloaked Figure Syaoran dream, and the date appears to have been February 2nd, 2017.

 In this dream, that shadowy creature completely consumed Syaoran, who was protecting someone in its path, who I can only assume was Sakura. Like many of my dreams before, I dismissed it initially until I had a second dream on April 14th, 2018.. This time I didn’t see the actual shadowy creature, but rather saw a somewhat intense conversation between Sakura, Syaoran, and Kero. Syaoran seemed frustrated and incredibly worried, and the dialogue was in Japanese, so I could not understand a word of it. But there was one word in particular that he said, and I managed to remember it even after I woke up. Somewhere in this dialogue, Syaoran had said the word ‘kagemaru’. Why that word was the only one I held onto, I’ll never know. But it’s important to remember here that I don’t speak or understand Japanese. But something here compelled me to try and look this one up.

  I try to follow my intuition on things, so I googled the word ‘kagemaru’. I found mostly images of a character from Yugi-Oh GX (lmao), whose name happened to be Kagemaru. I have literally never watched anything beyond the original Yugi-Oh series, so I can promise you I wasn’t at all influenced by this. What surprised me was what the name meant...

 ‘Kagemaru’, appears to translate as ‘Pure Shadow’.

 AGAIN, my dreams were referencing a shadow, and weird enough in a language that is not my own. But that point on, I had an actual name for this entity, ‘Kagemaru’. To me, that gave me more reason to pay closer attention, and that’s where I really started documenting my dreams on Tumblr, which you may have seen. I thought to myself “this could be important, or maybe I’m just overthinking things again and this really is just a dream”. I thought “no one is going to take any of this seriously, and neither should I”. But at least if I had it documented and it turned out happening, then I could go back and actually say “Okay, maybe it’s real”.

 So I didn’t think about it for a while until episode 22 of the Clear Card anime came out on June 10th, 2018, a few months later. And there was a scene in particular that gave me chills.

 The scene I’m talking about is when Akiho is telling Tomoyo about her scary dream. This differs a bit from the manga, where she didn’t have this conversation really with Tomoyo at all, but since Ohkawa was involved in the script, I still consider it relevant. The really key thing I paid attention to that Akiho said was this:

She didn’t describe what this scary thing looked like, but it was clear that it was a truly horrifying dream for her, since her hands were trembling as she spoke about it. Additionally, she had spoken about said dream just before to Kaito and stated that there was a voice that said “You can never return”. Now, we weren’t sure what this voice sounded like until the anime aired it, and I gotta say…I was not expecting it to sound the way it did. The voice that says this in my opinion doesn’t sound human, was not really recognizable as any of the characters we know already, and immediately it gave me bad vibes and reminded me of the ‘Kagemaru’ I had seen in my dreams before. But still, I went on thinking “well maybe they’re still unrelated and I’m overthinking this”.

 Then chapter 27 came out in the beginning of October, 2018. Sakura and Akiho were down in the library in the basement, and right after Akiho had gotten emotional and was consoled by Sakura, they were suddenly in the dream world that Sakura had seen so many times. Again we heard that creepy disembodied voice say “You can never return…”. But what happens directly after this is what perhaps scared me the most. Akiho goes into what I call ‘Book-mode’ and says “Bring her power, too, “in” here”. There were a few words said before that, but one thing to keep in mind as well is that in the Japanese version of this chapter, different fonts were used for each speech bubble coming from Akiho, implying that multiple people that were not Akiho were speaking through her. And what did we get right after this was said?

A black, shadowy mass that tries to consume Sakura….

 I cannot tell you how bad this freaked me out when I saw it. Words cannot describe it. It was such an uncomfortable feeling, and I felt I couldn’t really ignore it any more. So all this time, I have just been waiting for developments and constantly fearing for Syaoran the entire time because of my dreams. 

 If you’re thinking “Chrissy, this is really weird”, then buckle in, because it gets a little bit crazier still.

 Sometimes I like to go back and read old fanfics I wrote up but never posted (I was a very shy child who kept most of my writing to myself). Well, in February of 2017, I recall reading back through some documents, and I found one that was only about a page, but I had written it all the way back in 2008, a long long time ago now. I had long forgotten about this and have no idea where it even came from, but something compelled me all those years ago to write about a black shadowy mass that formed into a dragon. That’s right…a dragon.

 So, all in all, it’s been a pretty wild ride for me. Lmao.

 Now that I’ve told you this story, let me further explain why I think Syaoran in particular will become a target. CLAMP, in my opinion, has been pointing in this direction for quite some time and hinting that something was going to happen to him. It kinda started when he said he came back to Japan to be “ready when the time came”, and it seems to be based around a future his mother saw. This future she saw has still not been disclosed to us, but Syaoran from the very first chapter seemed determined and prepared for a moment in particular that has yet to happen, and Eriol is supporting him from behind the scenes.

 Throughout the series all after this were numerous, numerous occasions in which people around Syaoran expressed their concerns for his well being and expressed how much they care about him. I’ll go ahead and list them all now so you can see the sheer volume of them, which means CLAMP is really trying to hit this point home. Why you might ask? It seems obvious to me that they want to increase the emotional impact that a future moment will bring, and that is why I am so entirely convinced something bad is going to happen to him.

Eriol: So, as we thought, she ended up creating a new card? Then...

Syaoran: I know...what I’ve got to do. I’ve put a spell on the teddy bear. I’ve already given it to Sakura. Through that bear, I’ll be able to use the Sakura Cards little by little...Hiiragizawa?

Eriol: Please, just don’t forget this. Sakura-san is important for me, too. Not because we’re connected through Clow Reed, but because Sakura-san is her own person.

Syaoran: Yes (I know).

Eriol: In the same way, I care about you because you are your own person, is what I’m saying./In the same way, you are important because you are your own person. (not sure about which one)

Syaoran: -silence-

Eriol: (chuckles) ...It is typical of you, to not give a reply.

 Sakura is obviously in this list too, but I thought she was obvious enough that I didn’t need to show examples. Clearly she would be very upset if anything happened to Syaoran, which may be also why she is so upset seeing the dreams of him as the Cloaked Figure. Even the mere thought of those visions are enough to give her anxiety and put a frown on her face. 

 So seeing all these signs that CLAMP is throwing out there, it seems practically confirmed that Syaoran is going to get into quite a bit of trouble, but it’s a matter of how and when. Here’s what I think ultimately is going to happen, and please take this as a vague idea. I don’t expect things to happen exactly this way, but this is the scene that plays out in my head when I think about it.

 I think that at some point, Akiho is going to go into ‘Book-mode’ again, perhaps stirred by emotional thoughts about Kaito, and come after Sakura. That black shadowy mass is going to try and grab her, but at the last second, Syaoran rushes in and throws himself in front of her, which would be a classic sacrificial Syaoran move. Sakura might try to do something about it like grab him and pull him out of the path, because she cannot bear to have anything happen to him, but then…in that split moment, she remembers that she cannot touch him right now or else she’ll hurt him, due to the spell placed by an unknown source keeping them apart.

As a result, she hesitates and is unable to save him, just like a very similar scene that occurred in Tsubasa (for all who have read, you know what I’m talking about, and back then there was a black shadowy mass too, wasn’t there?!). Maybe this also would explain how Syaoran becomes the Cloaked Figure, why he looks so devoid of emotions and feelings in those visions as well, or maybe even how the dragon comes about and why the Cloaked Figure stands atop it. We know that the spell inside Akiho is also slowly crushing her soul with the more magic it absorbs, so what if it were to transfer to Syaoran instead? His eyes and facial expression are so cold in Sakura’s visions/dreams, and it’s clear that what she was looking at is not Syaoran, at least not in soul.

In this daydream theory I have, Sakura is devastated and wants to change things and wishes for a moment that she can go back and do things differently, and in that moment of wishing, makes the card that that Kaito needs.

I think it seems somewhat implied that the card Kaito needs is time related. The reason I believe this is because when Sakura made REWIND, Kaito said it was “close”, but still not what he needed. I can’t speak as to what Kaito’s goals are yet, but maybe he wants to go back and change a moment in time that happened long ago, but he’s not strong enough to do so. It requires an obscene amount of magic and also is considered taboo, at least in the magical world in Tsubasa, and these same ideals and lore seem to carry on through other CLAMP series. I feel this also lines up with the ‘forbidden’ magic Kaito keeps referring to and also explains why he would deem time magic in particular necessary to accomplish it and made his contract with Momo.

Another theory I can throw out there is perhaps there is an impending consequence for Syaoran already that is just not being considered. For example, we know he’s breaking a magical contract right now by holding onto the Sakura cards and that Eriol expressed he was against the idea of Syaoran doing this. I feel like there might potentially be underlying consequences to this sort of thing that CLAMP isn’t divulging, especially since it seems kinda odd for the only problem to be that he gets worn out quickly? I mean, Sakura did too when she first was transforming them, so it just seems kinda…light in terms of the gravity of what he's doing. Additionally, for Eriol to be so adamantly against something, it means it must be serious. After all, he certainly doesn’t mind putting himself in situations that make him bed ridden for the ones he cares about, so it seems unlikely that this was Eriol’s concern, unless he’s just being incredibly hypocritical.

Ultimately, we have a lot more information to find out, but here’s what I’ve got based on the things we know now. If you read all this and think I’m a crazy person, I wouldn’t blame you. Lol. I’m fully prepared to be wrong and honestly hope I am, but I thought now was the best time to get all this out and see where things go from her. Everything will surely be all right!!!
