Y'all ever noticed that in every single continuity Nubia get associated with a different Pantheon/God? It's really weird.

Pre-Crisis:

Nubia is Diana's twin who is kidnapped by Ares/Mars and raised to fight the Amazons. Kay first off: Diana's evil Black twin? Really? Glad that pretty much immediately revealed she was only evil cause mind control and once that was broken she was one of the god guys, but why'd you do it the first place DC? Pantheon: Greco-Roman, The tendency to treat the Greek and Roman names of Gods as interchangeable is something that annoys me, since there is over lap between the two but there's more nuance than that. But that's a personal annoyance that probably isn't going to go away anytime soon, so whatever. I am curious though, why is Ares/Mars always villain? Like obviously the answer is War Bad. But mythologically Ares is Hyppolyta's father. Wouldn't that be an interesting thing for DC to canonize.

Post-Crisis:

Many centuries ago Nu'bia won a contest like Diana did and became the guardian of Doom's Doorway. She crossed over to the other side and was never seen again leaving many Amazons with the assumption she was dead. In truth she lived in Hell for centuries and even became the lover of the god, Ahura Mazda Sidenote: Why did they add an apostrophe to the middle of her name like that? Trying to make it sound more foreign or something? Religion: Zoroastrianism, is actually still an active religion. Impressive considering it's almost as old as Buddhism though the number of practitioners is significantly smaller. Honestly, points for not doing a big name mythology. Seeing as I had never even heard of this religion before I don't dare speak to the accuracy of Ahura Mazda in this comic. But still interesting someone chose this out of all the possible options

Rebirth/Infinite Frontier:

Nubia came out of the Well of Souls around the same time Diana was born. And the two were especially close because of that. Nubia was selected to to become the guardian of Doom's Doorway like her pre-crisis counterpart, but she never goes missing. Instead she eventually becomes the queen of all Amazons. After this she starts having memories of her past life before she came through the well of souls. Which is how it's revealed she used to be a Madagascar princess named, Zahavah, training to become the avatar of Skehmet. Honestly, wtf is this? Madagascar is is it's own country with it's own gods. There is absolutely no reason she would be worshiping a goddess from over 3000 miles to the north of her. This is just treating the entire continent of Africa like a monolith. And it's also annoying because there is an entire tribe of Egyptian Amazons who almost never get stories about the pantheon they are supposedly bound to.

Anyway, I know asking for consistency from DC is tall order especially with how minor of a character Nubia was until recently. I just think the constant pantheon shift is an odd detail to keep changing. Overall, it's a shame how underutilized Nubia is as a character. Especially since according to Wikipedia she's DC's first black female superhero. But how come in every major continuity they manage to make a decision that is not great? Evil Black twin is bad, but makes an unfortunate kind of sense, since it was the 70's. At least she showed some heroic traits while still mind controlled? Nu'bia is an odd little detail, but probably not that big of a deal? But damn if the Egypt/Madagascar thing does not annoy the hell out of me.

Mars Odyssey

Imagine: Atticus wakes up on Mars and doesn't know how he got there.

A great explosion startled Atticus into a sweating and fearful state, searching eagerly with his eyes but finding no Leti. No Montrose. No Hyppolyta. No Ji-ah. There was only a stretch of red dusty land, ice-capped mountains, volcanoes, and canyons.

For Atticus, it was only one mere second ago that he was dying of blood loss. Now he was in what seemed to be New Mexico.. or Mars.

His body was in one piece, but there was something fixed to his face, an oxygen mask. Someone wanted him to survive, but who? And where?

He climbed to his feet steadily looking into the distance and in the twinkling of an eye, two astronauts appeared from literal thin air.

"Gah-damn," he whispered.

They approached him as he stood waiting for answers or anything that would tell him where he was, how he got there, and how to get back.

"You've been abducted," the one on the left said. "We brought you here because your body was in the process of being destroyed on Earth, but here we have technology to fix that."

"Y'all do see I'm a colored.. You sure you wanna use all that fancy tech on me?"

The astronauts exchanged a look.

"That's Earth's dysfunction. Come with us," they extended a covered hand.

Atticus wasn't on earth after all.

He followed them through the hills and plains until they disappeared behind a barrier into thin air.. he paused, but he was brave, so he stepped on through the barrier as well. There was an entire hidden city. As he listened to the astronauts, he learned that he was indeed on Mars and would suffocate if he removed his oxygen mask.

They had a colony and knew he was a soldier. They wanted him to help them strategize and war against the Earth.

"This explains my dreams more than I previously thought."

Atticus explained that he dreamed of foreign wars that were outside of his planet, and now he knew that the Martians were actually humans living on Mars. He was in awe at all he saw. Everyone was integrated. There was no Jim Crow on Mars, and everyone wore sophisticated and tiny breathing apparatuses.

"The oxygen is thin," the lady astronaut shared, "But it exists. Our bodies have adapted. We don't need a lot to survive. Still, everyone has a supply."

"What's y'all's beef with the Earth," Atticus asked as they showed him around. "You all came from it," he stared.

He wasn't prepared for the explanation that came.

"This WAS Earth.. before the ruling regimes destroyed it."

There were creatures, dinosaurs.. vegetation flourished all over. There was oxygen and water. It was a paradise. Then people became violent and vain. They warred among themselves. There was poverty, environmental terrorism, bombs, pollution, the food was poisoned, the air became unbreathable. Natural disasters increased. Everything was dying and the planet was becoming uninhabitable. There was a great flood that wiped out billions of people. A remaining colony of the rich who could afford to dodge the flood left to find another Earth and they re-settled. The old Earth became Mars and life restarted with the ones who remained.

"We've been at war ever since the NEW Earth tried to destroy the remaining people here. They continue to try to take from OUR planet so we must defend ourselves from their tyranny. So you see, we didn't come from Earth.. this was always our home. Will you help us defend it?"

Atticus was torn. As much as he wanted to say yes, his family was home and he couldn't help in their destruction. He needed them all with him. All of them.

He struck a deal to have them abducted. Only then would he join their army.

"Atticus.. Atticus... "

"ATTICUS!!!"

"Huh!"

"Damn!"

He jolted awake to the sound of Leti's voice. He was sitting in his favorite chair with a blanket over his lap in their home in front of the fireplace. There was a book in his hand called Mars Odyssey and Leti was in his face.

"Mhm," her lips pursed as she rolled her eyes and got the kids together. They were running wild. He'd fallen asleep while reading them a story. "Told you that book was boring as hell, done put yourself to sleep! You were supposed to be watching the kids while I made dinner. I can't do everything Tic!"

Atticus was confused. His dream had seemed so real. The ground was cratered and covered in dust. He felt that he'd died from blood loss and had woken up on Mars where he was expected to lead an army against the Earth. Now he was in a different timeline, and it was Christmas. He couldn't say he didn't like this life...

"This isn't real," he whispered.

"It's a simulation, but it could be," the female astronaut stepped into the living room suddenly with no space suit. Atticus flinched. "Call it intrusive; but we went through your memories of earth to see what advantages we could gather.. what is this Christmas that you guys seem to have.."

"Christmas? Y'all don't have Christmas?"

She looked genuinely puzzled. Atticus smirked.

"Great." Sarcasm dripped from his being. He was wishing the simulation was real. Yelling and all. "How bout this.. Instead of teaching the ways of war, I teach love and brotherhood. Good will towards men. That's what Christmas is about. Loving ypur neighbor."

"What about the lights?"

"The lights..," he smirked seeing the slight twinkle in her eye. "That's the festive part. We hang lights and decorate trees because it makes us feel good deep down inside. It reminds of the good times with family and friends.. people I miss very much."

"TIC!" Letti's voice yelled.

This time when Atticus awoke he was lying on the ground. Everyone rushed him saying it was a miracle they bound all white people from using magic. It was a miracle the spell worked and he survived. They thought he was a goner for sure.

Atticus looked up at the sky that twinkled extra bright before they helped him up.

He had another life to spend.

Here’s a Sandman fun fact for show watchers, well actually also for comic book readers who aren’t aware of pre-Crisis DC:

Lyta Hall is the daughter of Wonder Woman. No really, her full name is Hyppolyta Trevor and she is the daughter of Golden Age Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor; and Hector is the son of Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl Carter and Shiera Hall.

Basically their deal was that they were survivors of Crisis on Infinite Earths, like Power Girl, and they were stuck in some kind of dream time-locked pocket dimension because Crisis and Hector was dead Lyta perpetually pregnant, I don’t remember exactly, I haven’t re-read the comic in a while, but it was weird and these two were actually Earth-Two heroes like Power Girl and Huntress, who fell through the cracks and made it to Sandman

In an AU of some sort, what would happen if all the ROs put on a play together?

The play in question: A Midsummer's Night's Dream (of course, what else?) Shae: Just wants to be a stage hand but somehow ends up in the role of Duke Theseus. They knock it out of the park with their performance. It may not have been what they wanted, but they aren't going to half ass it. Keagan: Insists on the role of Lysander. He takes it extremely seriously and is actually a great actor. His costume ends up being one of the more unnecessarily ornate ones. Aífe: She plays Titania, obviously, but she mostly... just... plays the role as herself. The costuming is to die for, though — she was very insistent on leading that department, and it paid off. Maeve: The only one with an Amazonian build, so everyone volunteers her for Hyppolyta. Her and Shae try to stick to their lines, but have to put up with everyone's else's shenanigans. Robin: Robin insists on playing Puck (it's their role!!!) but everyone else agrees that Robin must play Bottom, because they are the only one capable of literally turning their head into a donkey.

Flannán: He plays Puck. He can't act. Robin is furious. Everyone else thinks it's exceptionally funny.

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - A beautiful journey into mythology.

I picked up this series when it was first published in November of 2021, and it has sadly sat on my shelf since then. Why I foolishly waited so long to read this limited series is beyond me, but I’m glad I had the foresight to buy it.

At the time, I was trying to scoop up as much of DC’s Black Label as I could. Black Label allowed DC to reprint issues that had been published under other imprints (like the discontinued Vertigo imprint), but it also allowed DC to publish stories with its cannon of superheroes and villains aimed at mature audiences.

Aside from the sometimes naked goddess Aphrodite and a little violence, the mature label on Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons stems more from the fact that this is a very different comic story. Ultimately, this is a reimagining of the formation of the Amazons and Hyppolyta’s ascension to the role of Queen of the Amazons.

Those looking for Wonder Woman will be sorely disappointed - she doesn’t show until the final pages of the final issue - as this isn’t Diana’s story but rather that of Hyppolyta and the Amazons.

For those looking for Diana’s story, there is a DC Black Label book called Wonder Woman: Diana’s Daughter that may focus a little more on Diana. It’s got a TBD publishing date though. Ultimately, nothing is likely to top Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by Daniel Warren Johnson, published under Black Label in 2019.

While there is little in Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons to satisfy the traditional comic fan, this is a magnificent book that everyone should read. Some have criticized it for being an overly feminist presentation of the story, but I have to question what those people are doing reading Wonder Woman in the first place.

The story does get a little thick at times - there is a whole pantheon of gods, goddesses, and Amazonian tribes to keep track of - but it is a masterful story, and the art is something I’ve rarely seen in a comic. It looks more like an illuminated mythological text than anything. My only real criticism is that I wanted more, and it seemed like DeConnick probably could have fleshed this out to at least double the length.

Favourite Moment? Hyppolyta’s journey as the very human heart of a story of gods and goddesses.

Who Should Read It? Anyone interested in Greek mythology. Comic fans looking for work pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Rating & Content Concerns? 14A. As noted, Aphrodite often appears naked or in a state of undress, and there is a fair amount of violence (including one complete dismemberment). There is some discussion of sexual slavery but nothing detailed. This goes a little beyond what 14A might be on TV or in film but not by much.

Would I Read the Next Installment? I would kill for a follow-up. I’ll definitely take a closer look at DeConnick’s work when I have the chance.

Kal and Diana will eventually end up together, after mourning the death of the late Lois Lane. Their relationship is build on love, affection, respect and friendship. Also, they're ancient compared to the other leaguers. Conner, Chris and Jon refer to her as aunt Di, Kara and Donna keep trying to plan a wedding for them. Cassie forces Kal and Diana to go on double dates with her and Kon. Best of all, Hyppolyta and Phillipus both approve of their union.

With her mother the current head of UNIT (SHIELD), the third Wonder Woman does as much looking over her shoulder as actual work. Like previous Wonder Women (her mother and grandmother), she benefits not only from enhanced physiology due to the tampering of ancient entities, but from the technology those beings have left behind that have. So far, these devices have defied reverse engineering. Her father is Steve Rogers, the original Captain America. Hippolyta mentions how their relationship was rather spur-of-the moment and while Cassie carries his father's name around, her parents never married. That's not to say Steve was never around--he was an old-fashioned sort and when he learned of Cassandra's parentage, took as much responsibility as Lyta would allow.

Cassie herself takes her job very seriously and works as a full-time agent for UNIT (SHIELD). She works primarily in rescue, disaster relief, and the occasional supernatural or paranormal incident.

Other government agencies have been lobbying for her to be sent abroad on covert missions. She, and her mother, have staunchly refused many missions of morally questionable tactics. Wonder Woman needs to remain a symbol of hope, peace, and defense, they argue. Still, some people in government don't take 'no' for an answer...

Wonder Woman does not constantly activate her items, except the Bracers, in order to conserve the daily allotment of charges the items can provide (usually 4 to 5). The items provided armor value do so through personal force fields, and stack with not only each other, but mundane armor.

Like her boyfriend Connor Kent, she has high-combat armor, constructed largely of Trinium laced with bits of Neutronium. This golden, eagle-stylized armor provides an armor value of 50, and grants her flight at 150mph, with little need to refuel. This suit is also armed with Voltekka--but two of them mounted on the shoulders. The sword that comes with it has an armor piercing factor of 5 but is otherwise the same. Both armor and sword are exorbitantly heavy, weighing over a thousand pounds. While wearing it, Wonder Woman can carry little else without being encumbered. Because of the stylization, her upper arm, thigh, and neck are nor covered by the armor.

Cassie has been an active agent since 1997, though she was doing unofficial missions as Wonder Woman since 1995.

She takes her duty very seriously and though she has no official political power, her word carries a lot of weight. She was good friends with Diana.
