how did you get so good at writing? i'm so deprived of Tokyo Rev content (not that there isn't alot but I read so much that I basically refresh AO3 and tumblrs tags every day to see if anything new has been posted), that i'm almost to the breaking point of a Thanos "fine i'll do it myself" and starting up writing again Is it just practice? Is it better to post cringey writing that isn't that good ;-; I think I fall into the trap of making any OC or y/n Mary Sue and some authors write with such prose and emotion that i'm like dang how can I write like that love your work!!!! always re-reading <3

first of all thank you so much for all of your kind messages!!! you're literally so sweet😭

(I really tried to be useful and concise, I hope it's not too messy/long : i'm definitely not a real author so my tips might be really bad and specific too😭)

I actually started writing tokyorev abo content precisely because of that reason, I felt like I read everything about it and I couldn't find anything more, especially one with scenarios I actually like. this is why I started my blog!

I honestly wasn't so sure about opening my own blog on tumblr. of course you're bound to compare your work to other authors out there who are definitely wayyy better at writing than you, which is why I hesitated a lot.

but! I already had an account on wattpad where I posted fics, so I felt like my cringey era was behind me (it was easier for me to start here because i knew what my mistakes were when writing and what i struggled with. whereas, when i just started on wattpad, i really felt unsure if i was doing correctly + i was younger, so less sure of myself). but wattpad really helped me see what made my work cringey, what parts were unnecessary and stuff like that.

but what is so frustrating is how bad my writing is in english compared to how I'm able to write in my maternal language. like, when I read other posts and everything with better vocabulary, grammar, who know how to articulate sentences and words, you can tell it's something you can only achieve by being reallyyy comfortable with english. I'm not saying I struggle with english or anything, but the language barrier was one of my biggest doubts when I thought about starting posting fics here on tumblr.

also! when I write something and think it's cringey, I let it marinate for a few days and read it again. it's easier to judge my writing when I put some distance with it, then I correct my mistakes and stuff like that. but really, writing and writing is the only way you'll be able to improve, so it should really not stop you!

but in the end, I don't think anybody ever started writing fics and was automatically good at it. you really have to try and see what works and what doesn't. youre able to see what post gets more attention than the other and try and understand why : is it because of a character or the scenario was better or is it your writing ? feedbacks on your work really help actually, so don't be afraid to try even if youre not fully convinced and confident! I posted cringey stuff too and I still do sometimes😭 I know people do a wayy better job than me, but I really like to write so I don't let it stop me from posting.

and for the y/n character, I try to make her and her reactions as neutral as possible and make her do stuff anyone would do in those situations. but I honestly can't deny that I sometimes fall into those stereotypical y/n writing, which I actually enjoy☠️. but I really try to have her say normal stuff, not describe her too much and basically just think of her as the most basic girl you could meet (generic ahh traits : kind, sweet, bubbly, soft spoken...). some people hate that and some don't, I just write what I'm most comfortable with.

same, if you to start writing you should start by doing stuff and scenarios which you really like and inspire you. don't go and try to write something you know people will like, but rather something you're confident in writing because that's a character you like and know how to describe, and because you have so much ideas which would really fit him etc.

and what helped me are the headcanons with the lists. maybe you noticed, maybe you didn't, but I used to list stuff when I started posting. it's just easier to structure my ideas, to see them more clearly. writing huge paragraphs are actually more of a hardwork I think, because everything has to follow the precedent idea and it has to be comprehensible, linked to what you're gonna say next etc. if you list what you wanna say, you can talk about how a character's personality is like and then change the subject radically without having to think and care about the transitions and overall plan (of course if it's too out of pocket it looks weird, but I hope you understand what I mean)

and if you want to write stories and not do little headcanons, what I do when I'm stuck and don't know what to write is that I also sometimes only write a part I really like and leave the beginning (or any other part) for another time when I'll be more inspired. I really don't have any hierarchy when I'm trying to find ideas, I wait for them to come naturally. I don't know what else I could say, it's really messy lmao😭

I hope you found it useful! you definitely will find people who write way better than me and who can help and guide you better than that, with better tips... that was more like my experience on tumblr than anything else, but I hope it could help you!!

Hi there! Absolutely do not apologize! Anyone who loves Jily and Jilypad is welcome here :D

Now, the thing is that I don't read much in the way of angsty/tragic stories; I'm usually more fluff oriented. However, between my reading and discussions with fellow fans, I can give you some recs!

Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) by @kay-elle-cee is a super angsty story about Sirius, Lily and James. I haven't read it but Kelsey's writing is fantastic so I have absolutely no qualms about recommending this! (And then maybe check her other works tagged angst. She's not afraid to pack a punch.)

A Fate Resigned by @possessingtheproperspirit killed me 😭 I know angst fans also highly recommend her series the way you left me - which, again, I haven't read but I have no doubt must be excellent.

And The Wolves All Cry by monroeslittle is another one that I haven't read but is always the first story any Jily fan mentions when they think about angst.

no body no crime by @wearingaberetinparis is a WIP, but it's nailbitingly good. Mary these days is working on Love Is A Lie, which I know is also angsty but probably more on the relationship/heartbreak side than the dark angst side. (She's splendid at relationship angst though so if that's your thing, go ahead and scroll through her stuff unashamedly! She's one of my favourites.)

Another WIP that has the angst fans in a chokehold is Dead To Me by @itsjamespotter. I read the first installment and it was devastatingly good, but too painful for me to read as a WIP.

If you're asking me, I'm assuming you've read my story My Best Friend's Girl, which is nothing like the above angstfests but James does get a good bit of heartbreak while Lily is in a relationship with Sirius.

Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of Jilypad here, as, like I said, I don't read much angst and Jilypad stories are more scarce to begin with. But one day I will finish that super angsty prophecy/war AU where Lily goes to live with Sirius and they pretend her baby is his.

I wrote for so many fandoms over the years, but from now on I mainly focus and write for Game of Thrones, only Jaime and Cersei, tho I would love to write a full Jonsa fic.

I would say "grieving for the living", because even if there is hope at end, Jaime is still dead so...

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hmmm, maybe "all of us, intertwined"? It's not the kind of fic that get an ending, but Jaime and Cersei are def happy and thriving here.

Strangely no? That's what I was worried about when I started posting because *incest*, but I never got hate.

LOL Yes, even if it's a struggle to write it 😭

Gosh, the descriptions. I feel like it lacks poetry when it comes to the descriptions, and it's too bland.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Hell yeah, I'm all for it! I'm French and I headcanon Modern!Cersei being fluent in it (and also in Italian).

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (for Spuffy)

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Either "give you my wild, give you a child" or "grieving for the living", I always rotate between those two, and I think I'll never top the work I put in those fics.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Four works so far but hoping to add more since I have a lot more fics written I've never published.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

Wow I didn't even know this was a thing! Had to look up how to find it. My total Ao3 word count is 182,483 words.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

My current works are for Black Panther but I plan to write a oneshot for MCU's Secret Invasion show because I liked Gravik and thought he was hot (I like the skrull in general lol). But I also have pretty long and large fics for Netflix's 2017 movie "Bright" that I want to upload as well. There are other fandoms too but they escape me atm.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I only have four fics up and one of them is brand new so 😅

Hmmm, I guess that would be If The Shoe Fits. There's a planned part two that might negate this answer though.

Mount Jabari 🤣Reader was very happy at the end of that fic.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I did on Winter Moon but I don't particularly care about the opinions of someone whose intentions are to be intentionally dismissive and negative so the comments the person received in return were likely not what they had wanted 💀

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Absolutely yes. Bring me the SMUT! Right now! I will write it for you if you don't.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Nah, never did a crossover and not really a fan of them. However when I was still really young there was a gigantic, kind of OOC crossover fic with a bunch of popular anime from the 90s/2000s called Otherworld and I used to read that like it was the bible. It inspired me to do my own first fanfics. There were like 9 books to that story and multiple oneshots and short stories that tied the characters together and everything.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware... and anyone who tries it....

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not publicly, but I have gotten a comment that someone loves my story so much that they translate every chapter so that they could read it properly and it made me so happy 😭❤💕

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope! But I do love giving other authors ideas and vice versa. I think it helps people think outside the box when they brainstorm with friends.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I'm going to say Attoye from Black Panther for now? I was never that big of a "shipping" person in fandoms but I definitely enjoy Attoye enough to say I ship them. I also like Nashuri and Killmora.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Nothing atm. I tend to work on stories in order of inspiration and importance. I don't publish things I'm not willing to commit time to at some point.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm not sure exactly. I've been told that I write very descriptively and that it can paint a vivid picture of scenarios and characters, so I'll go with that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Fluff and filler. I don't dislike fluff completely but I tend to write it as realistically as possible because trying to imagine people being that super ooey gooey makes me wanna gag and cringe lmfao

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I do it only when necessary for the simple fact that having to provide translations for entire scenes of dialogue gets tiresome and tricky.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Inuyasha in middle school💀

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

It doesn't have a name but like I said above, it was definitely Inuyasha and or anime related.

🥀🍯 OOC. a message that’s a tad more thoughtful than a quick update, since I really do have a lot of things to say … I do apologize, however, if this post is rather … messy 😭 my brain feels square rn, but it also wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t share a bit of what’s in my heart—so, I’ll do my best with what I have ! 😊

for many reasons—some more obvious, others more personal—the 2020s have been quite a ride so far. personally, 2022 has been a real struggle for me; I’ve braved some things that I was not yet ready for & it really felt like the year where my life was adjusted in such a permanent way—change is exciting, but admittedly I’m not always comfortable with it … I much prefer consistency 😔

that among other things has made my early 20s a very strange ride so far—it has been difficult, it has been trying, it has been taxing, & sometimes, it has even been a little scary, I must admit … but I’ve had so many blessings by my side that have all been such a comfort to me on this wild trip. this blog—& the company kept on it, especially—is a MAJOR one indeed; the fact that I have a place to turn to, where I can forget about everything that overwhelms me & have a bit of fun, plot some cute things, & admire all you talented writers on my dash … 🥺🌼 I’ve mentioned this before, but I feel that I truly cannot say it enough. I am so grateful for this place & the warmth it brings me, the joy it fills me with, & the opportunity it allows me ! 🌷

but this place would also not be so wonderful if it was without—again—the company that I have here. my closest, dearest friends, whom I am overwhelmingly thankful for, & pals of different but equal value, who make this place the source of sunshine that I feel it is. when light seems so distant in other places, I feel as if it is never quite as far out of reach here. it is so friendly here—so gentle, so kind—& I only hope to give a similar feeling to all of you, too. if you are reading this, do not doubt for a second that I do not mean you—each & every one of you has made me smile before. I can guarantee that. & there are no words that I could use to express just how precious that is to me … truly, it is so 🌼

to those who are closest to me … thank you for being my family. yes, you are my family, & you will always mean the world to me. while I do not want to tag anyone directly as to not accidentally make any feel left out or forgotten, I do hope you know who you are when you read this 😊🌿

just the other day i was thinking about an orpheus!revali x eurydice!link au because i was listening to 'wait for me' from the musical 'hadestown'. what about a percy jackson au with revali as a son of apollo who resents link because he gets claimed by a powerful god that no one would have ever guessed would have children. i have part of a scene drafted in my informal-concepting style of a fucking writer!link x editor!revali au. i cannot stress to you enough how insane and Not Normal i am about these two, i will stretch so far to make every connection to revalink i can, i might just get a little taller!

BUT TEEHEE i'm hoping i can get That™ Revalink fic out on time for revalink week 🥺 i stopped writing it for a bit because i got some writer's block and i felt like i was putting too much Plot for a oneshot, but we'll see how it goes! i planned some other stuff based on the prompts, but with the way this semester is going, i doubt i'll be able to write full-fledged oneshots on time for each of them so i may end up just uploading them later on after the semester is over (late may, june, etc)

LOL to that last bit, idk....... i've spent so much time on stan twitter and the internet in general i've developed a very particular way of talking. i'm someone who, if you say a certain word or phrase around me enough, i'll start adding it to my vocabulary without really thinking. like the reason why i type 'not' and 'sorry' as 'nawt' and 'sawry' sometimes? my stan twitter bestie lele (i'm not gonna tag her but she's on here as well i know ur seeing this bff i love u sm). how sometimes my emoji usages are random? also partly lele and other stan twitter mutuals who liked to use random emojis that had nothing to do with the topic because it was funny. i feel like the way i type things online expresses exactly the tone and flow i would use irl too 🤞😽
