Text
hey so do you think wtv keiko had to deal with growing up with yusuke could be considered a type of parentification
#god chapters where barely anything happens except a character's realization about things can be hard ...#im writing another keiko pov chapter and it's hard because well!!#keiko was never really a main focus in the series and as time goes on she gets even less of a focus so i have to fill in these spots#in her personality and views that aren't really explored. im taking a lot of liberties lets say#and idek if it's gonna read as in character cos of that#anyway im tryna say that like. pre series keiko was basically this presence in yusuke's life and he saw her as a pain but he cared#she was there to scold him and cajole him into going to his classes and she was his only friend#now we know atsuko was negligent and idk how involved the yukimuras were in his life but i feel like keiko#whether directly or indirectly was given this duty like you have to keep him outta trouble#you're smart you're mature he needs someone like you. this responsibility just kind of put on her before she can understand the weight of i#and she can't really comprehend that weight until it's abruptly taken from her. yusuke dies and there's no one to shepherd#i feel like keiko should get to be mad about this. this realization of the nature of their dynamic. keiko planning things around yusuke#who's never done that in his life. not because he's purposely being thoughtless but bc he was never the one to have to plan#to think about what their future looks like. he just kinda drifted along and keiko tried to do damage control. it wasn't fair#yusuke is keeping secrets from her she is scared of high school and that he'll die again without her knowing why and it's unfair#so she should get to be mad also because girls getting to be mad is one of my favorite things 👍🏼#the realization that yusuke won't be lost without her so she shouldn't hinge her life on the expectation that he will be#she worries about yusuke a lot i think. especially after he comes back from the dead. and i think kuwa's presence would help ease that#dread in her heart. it doesn't have to be just me. there's someone who can be there with him always and it doesn't have to be me#the guilty relief of not having to be the sacrifice. but kuwa doesn't mind so maybe it's okay this way#idk just rambles about my fic while i puzzle out how to word it#character analysis#yukimura keiko#yu yu hakusho

- fifty-three -
Fox has had the best Winterfest holiday of his entire life.
He’s sad that the holidays are over now, but he’s always a little sad in the weeks between Winterfest and his birthday, and he supposes it was to be expected this year too. He wishes Clancy could have stayed longer, so they could’ve celebrated their birthday together, but he understands that she needed to go home, to get back to work. This year will be the first in their lives that they haven’t been together on their birthday. To Fox, it feels strange.
Auntie Keiko and Uncle Kin have promised to help him celebrate his birthday in style. He’s looking forward to that, and of course Takahiro and all Fox’s new friends will no doubt contribute to the fun. Because his and Taka’s birthdays are so close together, they’ve decided to choose a day in between the two dates and have a party for both of them. Fox’s birthday is first, on the sixteenth of January, and Taka’s is on the twenty-ninth. They’re both turning twenty-six.
It’s not just the thought of a birthday party that Fox is excited about. During his last consultation with Dr. Sato at the hospital, she'd sent him for a new set of x-rays on his injured leg. According to her, his healing process is right on track, and his cast can come off in a couple of weeks. He'll still have to wear a light brace on his ankle for support for a few additional weeks, and he'll need some physical therapy, but he can live with that. If everything goes according to plan, he should be cast-free in time for his and Taka's birthday party, if not for his actual birthday itself.
Once he's free of the crutches and cast and brace, he'll be able to start learning to drive. Perhaps that's the thing he's anticipating most of all; learning how to do normal things like a normal adult and becoming more independent.
This was the topic of conversation he'd had with Clancy a couple of days after she arrived. She'd asked him what his plans were for the new year, and he told her enthusiastically about his driving lessons, and the class on traditional Japanese art that he'd signed up for, and all the adventures he and Taka would have when his leg was better and the weather improved.
"You know, I'm really proud of you," Clancy said. "You hardly seem like the same person who left home back in August."
"I don't think I am the same person," he said. "It's still me, obviously, but I feel like I'm evolving into a better version of me."
"That's a good thing. We should all be trying to evolve into better versions of ourselves. I think you're doing great."
"Thanks," he said. "I'm really liking the new version of me."
Clancy smiled at that. "Me too."
Fox returned the expression, but then he caught himself deflating a little. He said, "I wish everyone felt that way."
"And by 'everyone', I presume you mean Dad?"
"Yeah, and he only saw the beginning. What would he say if he could see me now?"
"He'd probably tell you to put on some pants."
"Shut up." Fox swatted playfully at her. "This is supposed to be a serious conversation, you know."
"I know. I'm sorry," she said. "I couldn't help myself. But yeah... Dad was pretty upset when he came home. I think he's still upset, actually."
"I figured," Fox said. "I haven't heard from him since he left, so I guess he's still not over it."
Clancy stared at him. "What? Are you saying Dad hasn't contacted you at all?"
"Not even once."
Like, not even to let you know he made it home?"
"Yeah, that's what I mean," Fox confirmed. "Mom was the one who let me know he got back safe. I've tried texting him a few times, but he didn't reply, and the one time I called him, it went straight to voicemail, so I didn't bother trying any more."
"Wow," was Clancy's response. "I knew he was mad, but I didn't realize he wasn't speaking to you. And this is all because you like a guy?"
Fox sighed. "It's not all because of Takahiro, but I'm sure that's part of the reason. I think he's mostly annoyed because I refused to come home and to do what he wanted me to do."
"If you want my opinion, it's past time you started living your own life," Clancy said. "You don't always have to do what Dad wants."
"I'm starting to see that."
"I'm glad. You deserve so much more than to be stuck at home with Mom and Dad all the time. I think coming here was the best choice you ever made."
"I may be biased, but I think so too," Fox said. "I mean, if I hadn't come here, I wouldn't have met Takahiro, so..."
"Speaking of him, when do I get to meet him?" Clancy asked. "I've been here for two days and I haven't seen him yet. Any longer, and I'm going to start to think he doesn't actually exist."
"He'll be over this evening, when he gets off work," Fox told her. "He wanted to give us some time to catch up."
"Thoughtful of him."
"He's very thoughtful," Fox said. "He said he might bring Seiji with him when he comes over, too. Apparently, Seiji saw a picture of you and he's been dying to meet you ever since."
Clancy looked both intrigued and confused. "What do you mean, he apparently saw a picture of me?"
"He found my camera in the forest, after my accident," Fox explained. "I guess he felt like it was okay to look through my photos. There were some pictures of us at the pool. Remember, from Rye's birthday party?"
"I still think it's hilarious that our cousin wanted a pool party for their eighteenth birthday," Clancy said.
"Is it really the pool party that's funny, or the dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, balloons and triple-layer confetti cake?"
"Okay, yeah. It was that other stuff."
"Now that I'm thinking about it, I like the idea of Rye's party. Didn't they say it was their 'goodbye to childhood' party?" Fox said. "Maybe I should have that. A 'hello to adulthood' party."
"Maybe you should," Clancy agreed, smiling. "Triple-layer cake and all. But, can we get back to this guy Seiji for a second?"
"Sure."
"What I'm hearing you tell me is that some strange guy just helped himself to a view of me in that green bikini I had on at the pool for Rye's party?"
"Uh... yeah," Fox said. "I wasn't there at the time, so it's not like I could've stopped him."
"Is he cute?" Clancy asked.
"I think you're asking the wrong person for his opinion."
"Oh? I thought you were into boys."
"Not exactly. I still mostly like girls. I'm really just into one boy," Fox said. "And don't ask me to explain it, because I don't think I can."
"Fine," said Clancy. "But objectively, though, do you think women would find this guy cute?"
"He doesn't seem to have any trouble hooking up, so I guess women find him attractive? If it helps, he thinks you're cute. A 'smokin' hot western lady' is how he referred to you, I think. I'm pretty sure that’s what Victor told me he said."
"Ohh... is he cute?"
"You mean Victor?"
"Yeah."
"Don't get too excited. He's married," Fox informed her, and then added, "To another man, just in case you have ideas."
"Too bad," Clancy said.
"Listen, did you come here to visit me, or to find a boyfriend?"
"I don't see why I can't do both," said Clancy. "I mean, you came here to visit and found a boyfriend, so..."
Fox had to concede that point. The last thing he'd expected when he decided to travel and experience a different part of the world for a year was to find a partner. Much less did he imagine that he'd be falling in love with a man. But, he is falling in love with Takahiro. There's no doubt of that in his mind.
That evening, true to his word, Taka showed up for dinner with Seiji in tow. He brought flowers for Fox, and a cherry cake for everyone to share after dinner. Fox was delighted to see Taka after two days of being apart, and was more than pleased to introduce him and Seiji to his twin sister.
For her part, Clancy did not miss the chance to tease Fox about the little bouquet of pink camellias and about the awkward way he and Taka tried to greet each other with kisses on the cheek. She said she was thrilled to see him so animated and happy, though, and commented later that he and Taka make an adorable couple.
As for Seiji, he couldn't take his eyes off Clancy all through dinner. He didn't seem to mind that they barely speak a word of each other's language, evidently content enough just to sit across the table from her and gaze longingly at her while they ate.
After dinner, when everyone retired to the living room for tea and cake, Seiji and Clancy sat in the corner together and did their best to have a conversation using Google Translate on their phones. Fox attempted to keep an ear open for anything interesting that they might be trying to say to each other, but it was proving too distracting. After being poked by Taka several times for missing things in their own conversation with Taka's parents, he had to admit defeat and stop paying attention to his sister and Seiji.
After that, it seemed Seiji and Clancy took every opportunity they could to see each other. At the end of Clancy's visit, Seiji even came with her, Fox and Taka to the airport to see her off.
At the doors that led to the security area, Fox and Taka both hugged her goodbye. Then it was Seiji's turn. He held up his phone and showed it to her. In his extremely limited English, he pleaded, "Make the email. Okay?"
"Yes," Clancy said. "I'll email you. I'll use the online translator. Promise you'll do that as well. Send emails to me."
He nodded. "Yes. I make the email," and then clasped his phone against his chest in a gesture that seemed to imply something of the tone those emails might take.
Clancy laughed and held out her arms to him. "Here. You should get a goodbye hug, too."
Fox had watched, fascinated, as his sister pulled Seiji into an embrace and held on for several seconds. Clancy has never been the most physically demonstrative person, and it was interesting to see her initiate a hug, particularly with someone she'd only met two weeks prior.
Before they broke apart, Seiji kissed Clancy quickly on the cheek. She didn't blush or look uncomfortable. She smiled.
Seiji glanced over his shoulder at Fox and Taka. With a cheeky grin, he said, "See? That's how you do it."
Looking embarrassed, Taka translated for Clancy, who gave Seiji a light, playful slap on the arm. "Be nice to Fox and Takahiro. We owe them for bringing us together. You should show a bit more gratitude."
Taka's translation of that was met with a typically unrestrained laugh from Seiji. It was clear he was not the least bit contrite.
After that, they said their farewells, and the boys left the airport. Despite the moment of levity in the departure area, it was a quiet ride back to town.
Fox was especially sad because not only had he said goodbye to his sister, but he'd also said goodbye to Ruby. He and Taka had mutually decided that their current arrangement for her wasn't practical. Fox couldn't have her with him, due to Uncle Kin's allergies, and it was becoming increasingly hard for Taka and Seiji to keep Ruby and Taka's dog, Hyorinmaru, safe at their house. Both the fox and the dog were showing signs of territorial aggression, and Taka was worried they'd get into a real fight and Hyorin would injure Ruby.
Fox reluctantly agreed that it was in everyone's best interests if Clancy took Ruby home, so they'd arranged a vet visit to get her health certification, and Fox paid the extra fee for Clancy to bring her carrier into the passenger cabin of the plane. Then, just like that, off she went.
Despite the difficult parting from his sister and his pet, however, Fox can still say the holiday was a happy one, and certainly one to remember. Every time he looks at the watch Taka had given him as a Winterfest present, he'll think of it. In fact, that's what he's doing right now, as he waits for Taka to come and pick him up. Today is Wednesday, and Taka is working an early shift at the book café, which means he gets off at one o'clock, so they'll have the entire afternoon and evening together.
This afternoon, Taka is taking him shopping for a new coat, because he's adamant that Fox cannot continue to wear a white jacket in the mostly white environment of winter in Mt. Komorebi. It'd be too dangerous, he says, and Fox needs something more easily visible, now that he’ll soon be able to get out and about again. Fox has repeatedly assured him that he's not going to go wandering alone in the forest any more, but Taka will not be swayed. Fox has given in, mostly because Taka is so serious about it.
He supposes, if nothing else, he'll look fashionable on the slopes a couple of weekends from now, when he and Taka go on their first real date. Taka is planning to take him out for breakfast, and then they're going to watch some of the events of the professional snowboarding competition that's taking place on Yukimatsu throughout that weekend. Taka explained it's a qualifier for the All-Japan Snowboarding Championship, and he's excited about it. Seiji and Victor are competing, and Taka says he thinks they both have a good chance at gold in their respective events. As for Fox, he doesn’t know anything about competitive snowboarding and has absolutely no idea what the significance of an All-Japan qualifier is, but he gets to spend the whole day with Taka, so he's happy nevertheless.
After the competition ends for the day, if Fox isn’t too tired, Taka’s going to take him to a lake where he says there’s a small waterfall, and a stunning view of the night sky with no light pollution like there is in town. Fox wants to take photos as references for painting while they’re there, but he thinks Taka may have something else in mind. The way Taka talks about the spot gives Fox the impression that the view of the sky isn’t the only reason people go there after dark, or even the main reason. He likes to imagine that when Taka kisses him that night, it won't be on the cheek or the forehead.
Maybe he’s silly for daydreaming, but he hopes he’s not wrong. If he and Takahiro are going to have their first real kiss on their first real date, he wants it to be there at the lake, under a canopy of a thousand stars. That, he decides, would be better than Winterfest, better than a birthday party, better than getting his cast taken off, eating triple-layer cake, or learning how to drive.
No matter what else they happen to do, that one thing would make the day perfect; perhaps even the most memorable and perfect day of his life so far.

I’m sorry this was late. Please enjoy and let me know what you feel about this series. Thank you so much for supporting me and believing that I can finish this series. I hope you have a good time amidst all the drama and rollercoaster of emotion. 🥰
Yuta woke up early and did his usual: stretching, drinking water, and thinking of what to cook for breakfast. Maybe he’ll cook some burger steak for Keiko, she loves that. Maybe they can also send Y/N some food for breakfast.
He glanced at his phone and realized that he forgot to call her last night. Fuck, he was so occupied with everything that happened earlier so he forgot. Why must he see that woman again? She's already back in the country? But then it was coincidental, nothing bad would happen, right?
He went back to his phone, hoping that Y/N isn't mad. Is she already awake though? Yuta was about to click her contact when he heard a loud banging on the door. Who would even come this early?
Once he opened the door, he was startled to see an older woman in fancy clothes standing in his doorway. “Where’s my granddaughter?” She walked inside his house without a word, glancing around. Why is she even here? How did she manage to find them? “I’m going to take my granddaughter.”
“What?” Yuta asked in disbelief, the words she said echoing in his ear. “You cannot take Keiko,” he said in a loud voice that startled the older woman. “You hated her, you cursed at her. You blamed her for her own mother’s death. Why would you want to take Keiko now?”
“She's ours. We can take care of her better. We can give her everything she wants.” the older woman claimed, making Yuta flabbergasted. After all these years? They never cared about his daughter. Why would she come now? Fuck! He knew something bad would happen.
“And you should know that we have the right to Misa's daughter.”
“Our daughter!" Yuta shouted.
The older woman shoved pieces of papers in front of him, pages of what looked like a diary. Misa’s diary. “Yuta, you were well aware that Keiko is not your daughter.”
He could clearly see the words ‘I told Yuta I’m pregnant and he’s willing to take care of my child. Where can you get a man like him?’ as he crumpled it in anger.
“You have no right to keep Keiko. I can sue you for kidnapping over this.” Yuta glared. Kidnapping? Is she kidding right now? “You took my daughter away from us, I cannot let you take away my granddaughter too.” He could feel his face heat up in anger. After all these years, she still hasn’t changed, doesn’t she? Doesn’t she realize that it was the reason why her daughters don't want to stay with her? Is that why she wants to take Keiko? "Now, give me Misa's daughter."
"You can't," Yuta said in gritted teeth, brushing his hair up in frustration. "Let me talk to Keiko first."
"I’ll give you a day or I can put you in jail, Yuta Nakamoto.” Then she left as fast as she came in.
He slammed the door shut, covered his face then shouted. This is so fucking frustrating! He then took a glass of water from the kitchen to calm himself up. Should he just run away with Keiko? They did it before, they can do that again. He should have told Keiko everything beforehand. But he shook his head, she's still young she wouldn't understand.
A day. He still has a day. He'll figure it out later but now, he needs to prepare breakfast for his daughter. What happened that morning kept on replying in his mind as the sizzles of the bacon can be heard. Should he seek legal help? Maybe Y/N knows some lawyers that can help with this. But he doesn't want her to be involved in this.
His phone vibrated. Y/N. He was just thinking about her. “Yuta, Keiko is here with me.”
"Huh? That can't be, Keiko is still sleeping." He lightly glanced at the stairs. There's no sign of Keiko yet. Is she having a good sleep? She should be up at this hour. Yuta didn't know what Y/N did but he can really hear Keiko's voice in her background. Wait, what?
Immediately, he ran upstairs and inside his daughter's room, surprised that it was empty. "Wait, how?"
"It's a long story." Yuta was already running down, looking for his wallet and a jacket to pick Keiko up. "She just stopped crying." He stopped and felt his heart drop from his chest. She was crying? “Can you just wait for us at the apartment? I kinda told Keiko I won’t call you.” Is she mad at him? "We'll get breakfast on our way back." He hummed to at least let her know that he was still listening to her.
"Yuta," she called weakly, "You should start telling Keiko everything."
Yuta kept on tapping his foot on the floor, pacing back and forth in the hallway of Y/N’s apartment unit. He should start collecting his thoughts to explain everything to Keiko. Based on what Y/N had supplied him, Keiko is already calmed. That only meant that she cried a lot. How much did she even hear from this morning to feel like this? What should he do now?
A ding resonated through the whole floor and he stopped to watch Y/N and Keiko exit the elevators. The younger girl stopped in her tracks seeing him, “You said you won’t tell him. ”He heard her say in a soft voice before hiding behind the older girl. “You also lied to me, unnie.”
Y/N quickly crouched down to be on the same level as her, holding her hands. “I’m sorry Kei but your dad will be worried if…”
“He’s not my dad.” So she really heard everything. “He’s going to give me away.” Her voice wavered, tears welling in her eyes. “He’s going to give me to people I don’t even know.”
“I won't.” Yuta revolted, voice raising in volume and the younger child flinched. She wrapped her arms around the older girl then cried loudly. The older guy sighed when Y/N glanced at him then leaned his back on the wall. Shit! He's just making everything worse.
“Kei,” Y/N’s soft voice can be heard. “Why did you come to my office today?”
The child sniffed before whispering, “Because I trust you.” Y/N smiled and Keiko continued her words, “You listen to me. You understand me. You always take care of me.”
The older woman smiled, holding her cheek. “Didn’t Yuta take care and listen to you since you were a child?” The younger girl nodded. “Then why can’t you trust him?”
Keiko’s glassy eyes turned to him. He remembered the countless thundering nights that Keiko would look at him like this. She isn’t sad, he realized. She’s scared. And it breaks his heart knowing that he did it to his daughter.
Yuta kneeled beside Y/N, hand caressing the younger girl’s arm. “Keiko, I won’t give you away.” he said calmly, “I would die first before they take you away from me.” She unclasped her arms from Y/N and transferred to Yuta’s arm, crying loudly on his chest. “I’ll make sure they won’t take you away from me, my daughter.”
—-----
Y/N was in the kitchen, in front of her laptop, when Yuta came in after tucking Keiko to sleep. Crying might have tired her out that she was knocked cold the moment she lay on the mattress. It’s not even nighttime yet. “Is she asleep?” Yuta nodded, sitting on the chair in front of her. “Are you alright?”
It has been a rollercoaster of emotion. He isn't even sure if he’s alright. “Can I borrow you for a while?” The girl smiled before nodding, closing her laptop. Yuta moved to the chair next to her and she opened her arms wide for a hug. He lay his head on her shoulder, her hands rubbing his back. “I’m scared.” He whispered, “I want to keep taking care of Keiko but she's right, I don't have any rights on her."
Y/N breathed hard while calling his name softly, fingers threading on his hair. “Do you know that she’s not your daughter?”
“I went out of town for a week because of a tour. Misa told me she drank with her friends and I was fine with it.” Yuta shared, remembering the moment his then-girlfriend told him about a stranger she met in the club with who she spent the night. He was so in love with her that he could not be angry so he let it pass. That was a drunk mistake, he reasoned out. “A few months later, she told me that she’s pregnant and we both knew that it’s from that one-night stand.” He smiled bitterly, “She wanted to abort the child and I made the promise to take care of her and her child. Our child.”
"I should have told Keiko everything. I was so scared that she'd hate me if she found out. That my parents would also hate Keiko if they found out that she's not mine." He snuggled closer, "I don't want to lose her. She's my everything."
Y/N breathed heavily then started fanning her face, surprising him. “Are you going to cry? Please don’t. I can’t calm another crying girl again.” He teased but she just giggled while shaking her head.
“This isn’t the right time but I feel like my heart will just explode because of you.” Yuta chuckled. And here he is getting worried about her. “I didn’t know it’s possible to fall that deep for a person.”
Yuta smiled and she mirrored the same expression, “Yuta, everything will be alright.” She slipped her hand on his, thumb playing with his fingers. “You have to trust your daughter. She's really smart, I'm sure she can understand everything." Yuta leaned his head on her shoulder, “I know she’s still young but you should let Keiko choose where she wants to go.”
"But what if she doesn't want to stay with me?"
"Just trust Keiko, hmm? She loves you more than anything in this world.” The side of his lips curled up, eyes focused on their interlaced hands. He should do that.
"Yuta, are you sure you're not Keiko's father?" He only gave her a confused look. What does she mean by that?
--------
Keiko was swinging her leg on the chair, fiddling with the napkins above the table. She must be more scared than he is. But he promised to trust her. Yuta realized how big Keiko is now. She isn't the same child he kept on carrying when she was young, the child who held his hand while learning how to walk. He should stop pretending that she's still his baby.
When the older woman came, he felt the cold sweat on his forehead. Yuta didn’t need to introduce her to Keiko but she was already posing her authority over the younger girl. “I’m glad you’ve decided to give Keiko to me.”
“I didn’t,” Yuta answered in a monotone that obviously surprised the older woman. “Keiko doesn’t know you well. It’s scaring my daughter.”
“I’ll let you visit her.”
“Keiko will make a decision for herself.” He breathed hard then glanced at the younger girl who looked surprised at what he said. “We should at least let her decide where she wants to go.”
He gave Keiko a warm smile, urging her to think about it. “I want to stay with Yuta.” Keiko said in a small voice. “He’s not my real dad but he took care of me when you didn’t. I want to stay with my dad.”
Yuta smiled timidly at the younger girl beside him. “You can visit Keiko if you want. I’ll let her visit Misa whenever she wants to but Keiko is staying with me.”
“Nonsense!” the older woman shouted which made Keiko flinch. “Of course, you’ve conditioned her to stay with you. She’ll have a better future with us. This is kidnapping, Yuta. You have no right…”
Yuta slipped a piece of paper on top of the table. “This is Keiko’s birth certificate,” He pointed at the box where the name of the father of the child is written. His name. “I have every right to take care of Keiko.” He looked at the older with fiery eyes. “And if you tried to take Keiko away from me, I can sue you for kidnapping.”
Another lady entered the restaurant and Yuta looked relieved that Mari was here. “You cannot keep her.” her mom shouted. “She’s ours. You have to return Misa from us.”
“Mom!” Mari shouted, holding her mother’s cheeks. She looked so tired, Yuta noted. “Misa is already gone. We cannot bring her back and she’s the one who decided to leave us.” The older woman broke down at the words uttered by her daughter. Mari breathed hard, “I know it’s hard for you, mom. But do you imagine how hard it was for Keiko to grow up without her mom? Yuta already did a great job filling that spot for us, let’s not make it hard for them please.”
It really was a good thing that Mari called him that morning asking why her mom received a call from him. She was surprised when he said that her mom paid him a visit and was threatening to get Keiko. Mari kept on apologizing, promising that she’ll talk to her mom.
Keiko stood up from her chair then went next to the older woman. “I’ll visit you from time to time,” The older woman only stared at Keiko who reached out a hand to hold hers. “...grandma.”
It was a good talk, he had to note. He promised that Keiko will visit monthly, even letting her stay in their place during the weekends. When the older woman left, Mari only gave Yuta a triumphant smile. “How did you even manage to get Keiko’s birth certificate?”
Yuta smiled remembering the conversation he had with the lawyer at Y/N’s company. It was a long shot and he was apologetic for disturbing her co-worker but Y/N was really persuasive. In the end, he just asked a simple question of ‘Are you written as her father in her birth certificate?’
“My girlfriend pulled some strings to get this from the hospital.” He honestly didn’t know how she did it, he only heard about the latest machine to be donated in the hospital, and she was already printing a copy of her daughter’s birth certificate. He honestly can’t do this without Y/N.
“Thank you for taking care of Keiko, Yuta.” He smiled at Mari, “And I’m glad you look happier now.”
Mari excused herself to leave for a shoot. “You should visit us sometimes,” Keiko said shyly then continued, “...auntie.” The older girl smiled.
Yuta breathed a sigh of relief then leaned on his chair the moment the door closed. He turned to Keiko who was reading her birth certificate, “Kei, do you want to see your mom?” The younger looked at him with shining eyes, nodding enthusiastically.
—----
“She looks the same as Aunt Mari,” Keiko noted, sitting on the floor while gazing at her mother’s picture next to her urn.
Yuta smiled, placing the flowers on the floor and sitting beside his daughter. “She looks like you.”
“Do you miss her, daddy?”
“Always.” Yuta whispered, “I’ve always imagined that you’ll grow up better if your mom is here with us. You won't cry that much and you’ll be happier.”
Keiko smiled, “But I am happy.” Yuta bit his lip to prevent himself from smiling. Keiko grew up well, it’s surprising to him. How lucky is he to have his daughter in his life? “I have you.” She said shyly then glanced at her mom’s picture, “And mom is looking out for me from heaven.” He nodded, brushing the younger girl’s hair. “Maybe mom is happy in heaven now.”
“She probably is.” And seeing Keiko now, he knew Misa would be. “Kei, thank you for trusting me and staying with me.” Yuta started that made the younger look at him while smiling, “I cannot give you everything that you want but daddy will try to do everything to make you happy, Kei.”
Keiko fidgeted on her seat, rubbing her legs as if nervous. “There’s something I want that you can give me.” Yuta gave her a confused look. “Unnie,” she continued, “Y/N unnie as my mom.”
His laughter echoed through the whole columbarium. “I want that, too.” He ruffled Keiko’s hair and she whined playfully, “Then, can you help me, my little cupid?” Keiko nodded, enthusiasm etched on her face.
—----
Yuta kept on pacing back and forth, biting his thumb while blowing heavy breaths. Keiko laughed, seeing him turn the plate again above the table. "Daddy, can you please calm down?"
"What if she says no?" He brushed his hair up. "Do I look fine?"
The younger girl laughed once again. "Unnie will love you so don't worry." she assured, "I am your cupid after all." She even played with her plastic bow and shot the plastic arrow which made Yuta laugh. He breathed heavily when the doorbell rang. Keiko skipped after giving her father a fighting sign. The lights were closed and he could easily hear her laugh when the door opened, "You looked cute in your outfit."
The younger convinced him to wear her white and red dress with small hearts, she even wore those little angel wings he bought for her last Halloween. When he called her a cupid, he didn't expect that she'd dress up for it. But she looks so happy. Who is he to take that happiness away?
"So you're a little cupid?" Y/N's voice was nearer and he could feel his heart stammering harder in his chest. When was the last time he made a surprise like this? What if he fails? "What's with the lights and…?" She stopped once they entered the dining room where Yuta was standing beside the table, adorned with candlelight and flowers. "Oh."
"Hi?" Yuta greeted her and pulled a chair for her to sit on. "I hope you haven't had dinner yet."
She thanked him quietly, "I already did but the steak looks so good so let’s eat some more." Yuta chuckled lightly, helping Keiko on her chair before sitting next to them. "But what's with the candlelight dinner?"
"Nothing." he reasoned out. Yuta took the wine and opened it with a pop. "Do you want some wine?"
Y/N nodded and he poured some on her glass. "Can I have some wine, too?" Keiko asked, which made the older girl laugh. She slipped the glass of wine in front of her, urging her to take a sip. Yuta was laughing when Keiko started wincing at the taste and just drank her juice. "It tastes so bad."
Dinner was full of Keiko's stories. She shared to Y/N that she visited her mom and that she looks very much like her. She even shared stories of when she spent time with her aunt Mari while she was filming a drama, "There were a lot of lights and a lot of cameras. But all the people were shouting at each other."
Y/N laughed and Yuta smiled. He remembered the first time she came to their home, he loved how her laugh was so contagious. The same laugh he wanted to hear again and again.
She was so attentive to Keiko, cutting the steak for her and even refilling her juice. A trait he had always found attractive from her. She had such a motherly charm. And she eats so well that even Keiko is picking up her habits.
"Do you want some dessert, unnie?" Keiko said that snapped Yuta in his senses. Wait, already? "We have ice cream, I'll just go get it."
"Do you need help?" But Keiko was shaking her head, grinning at them. Once they were left alone, Yuta sighed. So this is it? He should start saying his line, the one he practiced with Keiko. What was it again? Why is he suddenly so blank? "Are you alright? You seemed so quiet."
Yuta nodded. Great, he forgot what he was going to say. Fuck! Where is Keiko when you need her? The panic in his expression might be so obvious that Y/N laughed. “Why are you so nervous?” Keiko entered the dining area. “It’s not like you’re proposing.”
Shit!
“This is for you, unnie.”  the younger girl handed the older a glass with mango ice cream. Yuta gave Keiko a look, shaking his head. “And this is mine.” She put the glass of chocolate ice cream in front of her.
“I kinda want the chocolate one,” Y/N claimed but Keiko shook her head, saying that the mango ice cream is especially for her. “You should scoop deeper.” The younger commanded.
Fuck!
Y/N was staring at the gold ring on the spoon, covered by the yellow ice cream. Yuta hissed and immediately stood up, only to kneel in front of her. “I’m sorry, Y/N.” Keiko looked startled at his words. “I didn’t realize that everything was too fast. I just…” Yuta breathed hard then brushed his hair up. “Fuck!” he cursed that made the younger girl gasp. “I want you.” Then he shook his head. “That sounded wrong. I wanted you in my life. I wanted to be with you. I wanted you to be in mine and Keiko’s life.”
“When Keiko said that she wanted you to be her mom, I figured I should just propose to you without thinking that this was too fast.” Yuta hissed under his breath. “I like you so much I don’t want to lose you.” He hung his head low, looking at the ground to avoid her reaction. He should have thought about doing this surprise better. “I understand if you say no. This is such a failure.”
Instead of a serious no, he heard her giggle. Yuta was so surprised that he looked at her, seeing her staring at him warmly. “After your cute rant, do you really think I’ll decline? Yuta Nakamoto, you have no idea how much I’m in love with you.” She said with a smile, “Can you please stand up? This is kind of awkward.”
Yuta obeyed and sat on the chair next to her. “I have to agree that everything is so fast but I want you to know that I also want to be with you and Keiko. So…” She handed the ring to Keiko who was looking at it in confusion. “Please keep it for me in the meantime, Kei.” The younger one nodded. “Until I’m ready to ask your dad for marriage.”
“Y/N, you also have no idea how much I love you.” Yuta sighed and she giggled. “I would say yes in a heartbeat.”
Keiko lunged herself to hug Y/N before pulling Yuta closer. “I’m excited to have you both as my mom and dad.” Y/N and Yuta just looked at each other, smiling warmly.
“Daddy, that’s wrong!” Keiko whined with a pout and Yuta looked at the metal he was holding. “Please help me,” Y/N looked up from her laptop, smiling at the two of them. “...mommy.”
She stood up then sat cross-legged beside Yuta. “What’s wrong?”
Keiko sighed then fixed the part Yuta had been working on since earlier. “Daddy is bad at this. He can’t even make the arm of the robot.” Keiko explained some things that Yuta cannot comprehend and Y/N just nodded at her, confusing him. Does she understand what she meant? Is it a girl thing? Or because they’re both so interested in robots? He can’t blame Keiko for knowing these things since Y/N brought her to work as her little assistant once.
Yuta pouted while the two girls focused on building the robot. He remembered how they would bond in make-up and hair braiding, which he slowly learned. Now, they’re both doing robots. He tried to help by copying what Keiko was doing but the younger one just whined. “That’s the robot’s leg, daddy. How are you so bad at this?”
“Well I’m better at making real babies, not robots.” he whispered and Y/N giggled, nodding at him.
“Daddy is good at cooking though.” the older girl cleared. “And we’re both bad at it. I think that’s just fair.” Yuta laughed, pulling the girl beside him closer by the waist. She really has an unusual way of cheering him up. She always brings out the best in both him and Keiko that he cannot imagine a life without her. Keiko wouldn’t be this happy without her. His daughter wouldn’t even be here with him if not for her. He’s glad they met her.
And it was all because of a robot.
“What are you going to name your robot, honey?” the older woman asked as the robot was starting to form.
“Cupid,” Keiko answered. “Its mission is to find love like yours.”
Come to think of it, it really is meant to be.
If Keiko wouldn’t like Y/N first, she wouldn’t be here with them. His little cupid. His everything.
Also, if not for his lack of knowledge he wouldn’t even meet her. His now wife. His happiness.
He wouldn’t have his everything without his happiness. He wouldn’t have his happiness without his everything. He wouldn’t even have his everything and his happiness without his two girls. How lucky can he get?
“Cupid and I are going to find Uncle Taeil and Aunt Mari love.”
Y/N giggled and Yuta smiled, “I’m pretty sure you can do it, our cupid.”

Hello there! What would be some of the AOT boys' reactions to stumbling upon their crush (reader) playing the piano? Maybe something like Claire De Lune? It can be in the canonverse 🤗 thank you so much!
Also I just want to say that your writing is incredible, and you write all the characters SO spot on! Keep up the great work! 💕
Thank you so much for your kind words, I’m really glad I can do the characters justice!
I’m an absolute uncultured swine when it comes to music but I did some research so I hope this is what you wanted 🥰🥰
Tumblr media
AOT men walking in on their crush playing the piano (includes; Eren, Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, Erwin, Zeke, Reiner, Porco, Colt)
cw: none
a/n: This got kinda long so I put it under a cut!

Armin Arlert
Arabesque, No. 1 in E major by Claude Debussy
The soft notes of the piano fit well with the polished corridors of Mitras palace, and Armin couldn’t help but be drawn in by the sound. The music was gentle yet upbeat, a stark contrast with what had just been discussed in the dreadful meetings he had to attend.
A smile graces his face when he cracks the door of the music room further open, finding you at the seat of the piano. You look beautiful, your lips curved up slightly as your fingers dance over the keys. You look content, lost in your own happy tune, and Armin can’t help but be relieved that you have found a moment for yourself. He doesn’t want to interrupt, he just wants to stand and listen to you play, leaning against the doorway. He lets his head fall back against the frame and closes his eyes, letting you carry him away to a world of wonder through the music.
Eren Yeager
Metamorphosis: Three by Philip Glass
Eren had been surprised to be woken up by music. He shuffled over to the room where the sound seemed to originate from, only to find you. It almost seemed like you expected him, your gaze pointedly meeting his before you returned your attention to the piano. Eren did not have a lot of sense for music, but he could tell that your talent deserved much more than that run down thing.
“Bit somber, isn’t it?” He comments but you shake your head.
“Not necessarily, listen.”
He moves closer as you continue playing the song, and soon he finds out why you wanted him to listen. The somber tones get shifted to louder, more excited ones, giving the tune a more hopeful feel to it. He looks at you as you guide the music through its ups and lows, and a shiver runs over his spine every time he catches your eye. It’s like you see through him, he’s always felt that way, that’s why he took a liking to you to begin with. Though you aren’t telling him it explicitly, he understands what the song means for both of you.
Jean Kirstein
Liebestraume S541/R211: No. 3 Nocturne in E flat major by Franz Liszt & Jenö Jandó
Jean had just been wandering around, lost in thought, when he heard someone playing the piano. None of the scouts played piano as far as he knew, making him wonder if it was perhaps a Marleyan making use of the music room. He was pleasantly surprised to find out that you were the one playing. Your eyes closed, focusing intently on the tune of every key your fingers hit. Though he could watch you like this forever, he needs to come closer. “Wow.”
“How come you never told me you play piano?”
He smiles when you look up at him bashfully. “It had been so long, I wasn’t sure if I could anymore...”
“It sounds amazing, you have talent.” Jean tells you and comes to stand next to the piano.
You continue playing under his watchful eye, a smile playing at your lips. He enjoys the song, and jokingly starts ball dancing by himself, commenting that beautiful music should be danced to. You chuckle at him clumsily dancing with the air, your chest warming at the sight.
Connie Springer
Forever, forever by Keiko Matsui
Connie can’t help but feel slightly offended that you never told him, but as he watches you play from the open window, he can’t stay mad. He pulls himself up on the frame, startling you when he drops into the room. Throwing his hands up, he grins. “Sorry.”
You shake your head but smile, returning your attention to the piano. Slowly, you pick up the song again, and Connie makes sure to listen closely. The tune feels loving, and a blush graces his cheeks as he hopes that perhaps it’s him you are thinking of while playing.
“Can I sit with you?” He questions softly and you nod your head.
Seeing your face from so close as he sits on the bench with you makes his heart skip beats. It’s nice to see you so content, it’s the only way he wants you to be.
Levi Ackerman
Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy
Levi was determined to find out where you sneaked off to while you should be cleaning with them, glaring at the thought of how he should scold you for it. When he found you, the infall of sunlight playing so beautifully across your skin, sweet notes resonating throughout the room, he stopped in his tracks. Levi has a great appreciation for fine, sophisticated things, and you playing the piano with the sun setting behind you must be the epitome of it.
Your eyes widen when you realize he’s there, your hands stopping their movements. Levi scowls at you. “Keep playing.” He tells you commandingly.
Worried that you’ll be punished more severely if you don’t, you start again. You had thought he would be furious to find you slacking during cleaning duties, but as soon as you continued playing his face turned soft. He enjoyed it, taking a seat in a vacant chair and even leaning back slightly. As he listened to your song, he could imagine himself doing this more often, hearing you play and seeing you so delicately working the instrument, perhaps with some tea next time. It was alright that you snuck off this time, he supposed, hiding his smile behind his hand as he was glad he didn’t have to scold you.
Erwin Smith
Nocturnes: No. 1, Molto Moderato, in E flat major by Frédéric Chopin & John Field
It was rare to find a house with luxuries at this area, never mind one that has been abandoned and probably raided countless times. As you run your hand over the dusty piano lid, you wonder if it could possibly still work.
Erwin had just entered the room when you have propped the lid up and sit down on the piano bench. His eyes widen when you start playing a tune, one that for some reason sound familiar. You smile, playing more excitedly. “Seems like it has survived fairly well.” Some of the notes aren’t what they used to be, but it’s a miracle nonetheless.
The more the song carries on, he realizes where he’s heard it before. A friend of his father played the piano and he had played this song before. His admiration for you had already been great for the longest time, but this just increased it even more. Erwin had been no good at instruments himself, yet you played like it was your second nature. He makes a plan for himself to find a piano when the two of you return, wanting to hear more of your hidden talent.
Zeke Yeager
Gnossiennes |-||-||| (1890) by Erik Satie
People rarely came to this part of the wing, and since Zeke’s usual spot was closed off, he decided to go have a smoke on the balcony of the old music room. When he heard someone entering, he observed curiously, watching you sneak in. You pulled off the cover of off the grand piano, letting the sheet fall to the floor. He took drags from his cigarette, narrowed eyes watching your every move from a distance. It was always nice to see you, but what were you doing here?
You play some notes, testing yourself before you take a deep breath. Zeke’s cigarette drops from his lips as soon as you start playing. You carry the tune flawlessly and even he can tell its brimming with emotion. Where the hell had you been hiding this talent?
He listens patiently till you finish your song. He isn’t the best at judging emotions, but from the glances he catches of the side of your face, it seems that you are pouring your frustrations into it.
When you finish, he walks in, closing in on you from behind and putting his hands on your shoulders. You recognize who it is instantly as he leans forward, the scent of smoke carrying from his lips.
“It’s not fair to keep a talent like this hidden.” His hands rub at your shoulders and you feel pride swell in your chest. “Dedicate a song to me?” He asks playfully.
Reiner Braun
Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi
Reiner feels ashamed that he didn’t know when he walks in on you playing the piano. He looks away in embarrassment when your eyes catch his. “Excuse me.” He says, already turning back to the door.
“Reiner!”
You stop playing. “This... it’s a new song I’ve learned. Can you stay and tell me if it sounds right?”
He turns back to you, your face showing that you are being earnest. Nodding his head, he strides over to you.
You tap the spot on the bench next to you with your hand and he sits down with a tiny smile.
You go back to the beginning, turning your sheet music accordingly. His gaze goes from your face to your hands as you play. Your fingers move over the keys so lightly, and something about it just makes him want to hold your hand. He holds himself back, not wanting to mess up the beautiful song you are creating.
When you are done, you ask him what he thought. “It was beautiful.” He tells you, beautiful like everything else you do.
Porco Galliard
Prelude in G minor Op. 23/5 by Sergei Rachmaninoff
Porco expected to find some stuffy man playing the piano, which is the case at most of these ‘prestige’ events, but instead he found you. “What the fuck?”
You shoot him a glare, trying your hardest to stay focused on your play. “Don’t throw me off, asshole.”
He doesn’t want to throw you off, he’s just baffled. It’s astounding that the same person who throws him in the dirt during every training is the same as the polished one he sees in front of him right now. From the way you play, there’s no doubt that you must have been doing this for a long time. He vaguely remembers you telling him that you used to take piano lessons, but he had no idea that you now did it professionally. As he watches you play, your eyes cast down to the keys and fingers moving across the length of the board at a rapid pace, he has to admit there’s something charming about it. He grins to himself, the night will be far more entertaining and pleasant on the eye than he had expected.
Colt Grice
Rêverie by Claude Debussy
Colt at first thinks he must be dreaming. The music, your radiant face, it fits right in. He’s not though, instead he has just stumbled onto yet another trait that makes him love you more. You take tiny glances at him as you play and he can tell you are happy he’s here. His palms feel sweaty and his cheeks heat up as he realizes how perfect of a moment it would be if he confessed his feelings now. If he could, he would blurt it out, but he can’t. Instead he continues watching you, building the courage inside him bit by bit.
Noticing that you are cracking your neck quite often, Colt comes over to stand behind you. He’s gentle as he touches your shoulders, seeing if you don’t move away from him before he massages your sore muscles. Little sighs pass by your lips as you continue playing your song, letting your head fall back when it’s finished.
“Thank you, I’m not used to playing for longer times anymore.” You sigh, putting one hand over his.
He flushes at your touch. “You play beautifully, so thank you for letting me hear it..”

He can’t believe his eyes.
The moment the bag was taken off to show the man’s face, he wondered if he was having one of his nightmares again. He barely has those anymore, but what else can this be? He refuses to believe he is here. It can’t be real; it makes no sense.
But it is real. It’s him, without a shadow of a doubt. He’s visibly older, once black hair now with streaks of gray, and deep-set tired eyes. But he could never forget that face; the face that has been haunting his dreams for years. He almost feels sick at the realization. Why is he here? What does he want? How? When? So many questions.
Then fear.
Is he here to hurt him? To hurt you? No, he can’t let that happen; he won’t let that happen. Memories come flushing in, and it’s like he’s a young boy again, with no means of escaping or protecting himself. He feels powerless, and it’s terrifying. After so many years trying to gain control of his life, making others fear him...he comes and ruins everything.
Then anger.
How dare he even be alive? In his mind, he killed him long ago. He was supposed to be dead, locked away in some shithole, away from him. But he’s alive and he’s here. The man looks at him with fear in his eyes, but they’re also eyes that don’t recognize him. It makes a fire run in his chest. After everything he has done to him, after all the trauma and scars he left on him? How dare he not remember?
And then he feels you, on the back of his mind, surprised and wanting to approach him.
No. He has to get you out of that room.
“Y/N,” he says. He barely recognizes his own voice. His eyes are still locked on the man in front of him; he can’t let him out of his sight. His body shakes with the effort to keep himself under control, but he still lets his claws out. He needs to protect you. “Get out.”
“Ni–”
“All of you, out!” he shouts, a growl forming in his chest. The man on the chair is shaking, looking more terrified by the second. Still not recognizing him. That angers him more than he would like to admit.
He hears everyone leave the room; everyone except for you. He glances over his shoulder, opening his mouth to order you out.
“I am not leaving,” you say before he can talk. Your voice trembles, but he can feel your determination. You know how he’s feeling, after all. It makes him hate this connection even more; you’re not supposed to see him like this. You’re not supposed to know about this.
“Y/N, I’m not repeating myself,” he takes a deep breath, “Leave… now.”
“But Niragi, you–”
“Niragi?... Niragi Suguru?” those words freeze him in place. That voice, saying his name, makes shivers of terror run down his spine. He looks down at the man, his wide eyes now filled with recognition.
That man knows who he is. He almost wishes he didn’t.
“Do you know who I am?” Niragi forces himself to ask, in a whisper so low you can barely hear it. He can feel you in the back of his mind, as tense and frightened as he is. But he can’t focus on you right now; not when the monster from his past just said his name.
The old man stays quiet for a beat, looking him up and down. Niragi knows what he must be thinking. When they last saw each other, he was nothing more than a shy and scrawny fourteen-year-old boy; now he’s over a decade older and taller, piercings all over his face.
And he’s an Alpha. That is the most important change. One that the old man definitely notices.
“It’s you, isn’t it?” the man gulps, “Keiko’s boy?”
Niragi has to control his basic instinct to flee as he crouches before the older man, close enough that he can smell the pungent odor of sweat and cigarette smoke. It’s so disgusting and so familiar that he almost gets sick. He swallows the lump in his throat before talking.
“What if I am?” he says, in the most leveled tone he can. He can’t let him know he’s scared. He can’t let him get inside his head. “Why does it matter?”
“I– I just never thought I would see you again after all these years, I–” the man stutters, clearly nervous, “Is nice to finally see my nephew, though. You’ve...changed.”
“Nephew?” you ask. He can feel your surprise, followed by something close to realization. You’re starting to connect the dots. Niragi hates it.
“I’m not your fucking nephew,” he spits in the man’s direction. He can feel his blood starting to boil, claws tingling to dig into the man’s throat. “And you...you should be rotting in some prison cell, not here.”
The man laughs, a low and raspy sound that makes a shiver run down Niragi’s spine. He used to hate that sound. He finds out he still does.
“I’ve been out for years, son,” he says with a strained smile. Niragi knows he’s faking this sudden streak of confidence, but it makes him extremely uncomfortable. He knows that the man is trying to manipulate him. “And now that you’re touching the subject, it’s okay, I forgive you for your betrayal.” Niragi’s eyes go wide at that, “You didn’t know any better–”
“You forgive me?” he can’t believe his ears. But he knows something for certain; the man that calls himself his uncle is dead. “You forgive me…”
“Well, of course, I–”
It’s an exhilarating sensation, having the blood of someone he hates on his hands, claws digging through flesh like butter. But he can’t focus on the physical sensations for long; he’s too mad to see or feel anything but rage and pain. He can hear you calling for him, trying to stop him, but he’s too far gone.
“You forgive me?!” he screams as he keeps punching the man, now on the ground. “You forgive me for what, you motherfucker?! Do you forgive me for telling everyone what you did to me?! Do you forgive me for letting you touch me?! For letting you beat the shit out of me?! For leaving me with these fucking scars?!” He can hear you calling his name, begging him to stop, but all he can focus on is the man underneath him, bleeding and begging him to stop.
He doesn’t give a fuck; he used to beg too. To him, to his mom, even to God. He was never heard. No one came to save him.
So why should he stop?
“Niragi, Niragi, please stop!” he can feel your arms around his neck, trying to pull him back, your mouth close to his ear. His wolf would stop in any other circumstances, but not in this one. “Please, please, you don't want to do this, you’re going to kill him!”
“Get off!” he tries to shake you off his back, never stopping his assault. He can’t stop; if he stops he wins. He can’t let that happen. You keep your arms around his neck, telling him to stop, how this isn’t the way, how they can solve this together. He doesn’t want to hear it. “Shut up!” he marks his words with another punch to the old man’s face, “You don’t know shit!”. He doesn’t notice when you get off him.
But then you cry out in pain.
That makes him freeze, fist in mid-air. He glances at you, cradling your cheek as you lay on the ground by his feet, so close to the man he hates. The scent of your blood hits him like a truck.
No. No, no, no.
He gets on his knees in a second, totally ignoring the half-dead man behind you. You’re all he can think about, now. “Y/N I– I– I’m sorry– I– Let me see…”. You move your hand, showing the claws that mark your cheek. His claws. He did this. He hurt you; how could he hurt you? “I– I– I didn’t mean to, I–”
“I–It’s okay,” you say with a small smile in his direction. But he notices your shaking body, sees the tears running down your face, mixing with your blood on the wound he opened. More than that; he can feel how you’re feeling. He never felt like he wanted to die more than now. He can’t breathe. “Niragi? Niragi, look at me.”
He can’t see. He can’t think. He can’t speak. He can’t hear.
His whole body is shaking, violent tremors going through him as he tries to make it stop. He can’t see you, he can’t see anything but pure black. But he can smell the blood, sweat, and cigarettes, and he’s back to the house where it all happened. Back to the beatings and the abuse and everything else he didn’t remember it happened until now; but in place of his fourteen-year-old self, there’s you. He tries to scream; for help, for you, but he can’t hear his voice. It’s only himself and the dark.
Then it’s like everything explodes.
Tumblr media
You stayed in that room for almost ten hours.
Just you, a giant wolf, and a mauled body.
Ten hours.
You’re still in shock as you lay next to Niragi’s unconscious body. He has been like this for almost two days, and part of you fears he won’t wake up. You press your palm against his chest, wanting to feel his heartbeat. His body is covered in fresh wounds, skin so pale he almost looks dead. You can’t feel him in your mind anymore, but you know he has constant nightmares; so do you. What are you going to do if he doesn’t wake up?
What are you going to do if he does?
It had been terrifying. The screams, the blood, the emotions. Emotions you have never felt before; emotions you don’t want to experience ever again. That overpowering fear and anger and sadness almost made you want to tear your heart out. You know he is broken, but you never imagined it to be on such a scale.
And when he turned and you stopped feeling him... that was the most terrifying thing of all. Because that beast wasn’t Niragi; it was just an animal. A wrathful, terrified, damaged giant wolf. The human was locked inside, and you couldn’t reach him anymore.
The first time you truly feared Niragi was when he looked at you with those amber eyes; eyes that were not his own.
You thought that that was it, the animal in him was about to kill you. But he acted like you weren’t there as he finished killing his abuser, tearing his body apart like a ravishing beast. You couldn’t stop yourself from watching the gruesome scene; you had to look. It was like you owned him that.
So you stared, sitting on the floor, tears streaming down your face as you cradled your bleeding cheek. Not even when the blood from the body reached your knees did you look away; not even when the wolf ripped apart the man’s head did you look away; not even when the wolf turned to you, muzzle dripping blood, did you look away.
You couldn’t.
After that, you just stayed there on the floor, covered in blood and so terrified you couldn’t move. The wolf had approached you, sniffed you, and licked your wound before laying down in front of you, unmoving. His eyes never left yours.
Until someone had tried to enter the room, time when he had growled, jumping towards the door to undoubtedly kill whoever dared to cross the threshold.
No one died, but after that, you could hear a commotion outside as people tried to decide on what to do next. You had heard Ann call your name, but you couldn't force any words out. Discussions on whether to kill him had made you scream at them to go away. And then it was silent.
When you tried to get up an hour or so later, legs cramping and giving up on you, the wolf hadn't moved; not until you tried to get to the door. He had grabbed you by your clothes then, pulling you to a corner like you were nothing but a rag doll, before laying in front of you, blocking your way out.
Hours passed until you heard a knock on the door. By that time you were starving, throat dry as the desert and skin itching from the dry blood. The wolf immediately started growling, raised hackles as he stared at the door; he knew who it was as well as you did.
A knock on the door startles you, interrupting your thoughts. You check on Niragi before standing up to open the door, limping from the now infected wound on your ankle; you don’t heal as fast as Alphas do, after all. Just like before in that room of nightmares, you know who it is even before you open the door. His scent is even stronger than usual, and you know why.
“What are you doing here?” you ask with a sigh as Chishiya stands in front of you. You look him up and down. His injuries from his fight with Niragi are almost healed by now, pink skin replacing what was open wounds not even two days ago. His expression is the same as always, but you see him glance over your shoulder at Niragi, a look in his eyes that you can’t quite place.
“He’s still unconscious, uh?” he asks, ignoring your question, “Do you think he will wake up?”
“What are you doing here, Chishiya?” you ask again in a raised tone. His eyes flash, but his expression doesn’t change.
“Just checking up on you,” he says with a shrug, “How is your cheek?”
“Do you think that I’m some kind of an idiot?” you snap. “Do you think that I don’t know exactly why you’re here?” you can feel your anger rising, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes. “You selfish son of a bitch! Just say you’re here because you can smell that my heat is approaching!” you practically scream in his face. You don’t care who might be listening, you’re exhausted. “Don’t just use some fucking excuse like you care about me.” You move to close the door, but his hand snaps to grip your wrist.
“He’s dangerous,” he says, pulling you to him when you try to get him to release you. “He’s reckless, he’s uncontrollable. Just look at what he did to you.” you notice immediately when his eyes change colors, and you have to control yourself not to let his scent fog your mind.
“Let go of me,” you say in a faint tone.
“I would never do that to you,” he says.
And then he’s kissing you.
The sound of your slap echoes through the hallway, and your palm stings like it’s on fire.
“Do you have any idea of the state he was in, down there?” you don’t control your tears now, too mad and tired to care. “The pain and suffering he went through? His trauma almost made me insane!” Chishiya just stares, lips in a tight line as he cradles his red cheek. “I don’t blame him for what happened. I know how he felt when he hurt me. He didn’t mean any of it.” you take a deep breath, cleaning the tears from your face. “If you show up here again and try to take me against my will, I’ll kill you.”
“You know you’re just trying to prevent the inevitable, right?” he says, tone cold as ice. He’s smirking; it makes you want to slap him again. “I don’t like to lose, Y/N.”
“Fuck you.”
He doesn’t try to stop you from closing the door, this time.
You immediately go back to bed, nuzzling against Niragi’s unconscious body as you cry. You don’t know what to do, how to feel, what to think. Your head hurts, your body hurts, your soul hurts. You just want him to wake up.
“Please wake up,” you whisper in his ear as you sob, hoping for a miracle, something. “Please wake up. I– I don’t know if I’ll be able to resist him when he comes back for me. Please...I– I need you to wake up.”
Your body is like a ticking time bomb, and you can practically hear the clock as your heat approaches. It’s only a matter of hours.
If Niragi doesn’t regain his consciousness by the next morning, Chishiya will take you; and there’s nothing you can do about it.

don’t hate me. (akaashi keiji x m!reader)
summary: you push your feelings down for akaashi for so long that you’ve forgotten every loving memory of him. until, he reminds you.
a/n: this is so bad bc i didn’t edit this at all and theres probably a lot of typo’s but (*´꒳`*) i felt like writing a self indulgent soft fic before sleeping
warnings: nothings really, fluff and anxiety(?)
status : unedited / 1.9k
You honestly didn’t know when your love for Akaashi bloomed in a romantic way. After all these years of being his close friend, you both shared moments that an average person would label as romantic, but to you both it was just friendship. From sleeping together cuddled in the same bed to gifting each other on special days to sunset picnics after practice. Either you two were oblivious or the world was too strict on defining what romance is.
But now you know, you love Akaashi. Seeing him be confronted by a girl with a love letter in her hand made your heart prick with jealousy. Your eyes couldn’t stop glaring at the girl, the thought of her having a chance with him bubbled anxiety that you pushed down and denied. You didn’t even notice that your face was strewn with furrows when Konoha slaps your back.
“Oi, y/n-chan what’s that look on you face?” He looks at your ridiculous expression before following your eyes, when he sees who they’re set on he puts two and two together.
Konoha whistles before snickering at you. Despite Akaashi’s faint body language of disinterest, you still believed in the possibility of him reciprocating the girl’s feelings.
“This is some entertaining shit, don’t tell me you like her–“ You roll your eyes at him, ignoring his teasing, he clearly lacked awareness of how much his words could have affected you.
When you turn around, trying to get away from the scene before you, Konoha follows suit and babbles on about other things. You didn’t blame her, Akaashi was growing into his features and that brought a lot of attention from shallow girls. You just didn’t like the idea of him sharing his love. In your little fumbled head, that meant you weren’t important enough for him to give all his love to.
You spend the day almost ignoring him, which was stupid of you considering if you were losing him you should be trying to win his attention again. But you needed some time to let your brain think.
The rest of your classmates file out as the day ends and you’re left with Akaashi, who’s on cleaning duty with you. Had you not been jealous of the girl due to the entire situation that morning, the atmosphere wouldn’t have been uncomfortable and awkward, at least for you.
“Hey, y/n I haven’t seen you all day, are you okay?” He speaks up when the last student leaves.
He approaches you, placing a hand on your shoulder. You had your head resting on your arms as your face was nuzzled into the inside of your elbow. When you don’t respond, he moves to the other side to place himself in your line of view. You had your eyes closed, but Akaashi had a suspicion that you were well awake.
“Alright then, I guess you’re going to leave me to do all the cleaning.” He laughs, gently patting your shoulder.
You felt guilty, letting him do all the work, but that kinda meant he’s stuck with you a little longer and you were fine with that. The sounds of his soft humming almost made you fall asleep. His voice was soothing, it almost made you cry. Your sudden yearning for his touch confused you, why were you suddenly crushing on Akaashi?
The constant thinking had actually made you fall asleep. The last thought made you fall asleep to a comforting feeling. You had thought of Akaashi and that was bound to make you get a good nap. Just as you were beginning to float to dream land, you were woken up by a hand stroking your hair.
“Y/n, we gotta go now, it’s getting late.” He smiled at you, you looked so peaceful sleeping.
It took you a second to realize you had fallen asleep, but the drowsiness soon left when you see Akaashi looking at you, his proximity a little closer than you thought.
“You owe me one for making me clean everything, luckily the room wasn’t as messy as it usually is.”
You both silently walk home together. Luckily, volleyball practice wasn’t on, so you were able to go home and drown in your sorrows. Your overthinking was broken by Akaashi’s voice slicing through the quiet.
“Hey, are you still sleeping over tonight? we’re still going to the city tomorrow right?” He asks, eyeing your fatigued expression.
“Oh shit– I completely forgot.” You say with wide eyes, realizing you should’ve packed for a sleepover.
“You dumbass, you can borrow my clothes remember? I got extra towels and a toothbrush too. Where has your head been? you seem off today.” He says in worry.
You brush it off, saying you didn’t have the best sleep because you were up too late. He was right, usually you weren’t this… awkward. All your manoeuvres were hesitant and your demeanour was not the usual chill guy he knew. You curse at yourself for not being able to mask your emotions.
But man it felt nice to be sleeping in Akaashi’s bed again. Everytime you inhaled, all you could smell was him. You could almost doze off from it alone, but you wanted to stay awake a little longer to bask in his company. He was curled facing you, one of his legs was resting above yours. You weren’t sure if he was asleep or not. You were face to face with him, noses a few inches away, you didn’t want to stare too long just in case he opened his eyes but you couldn’t.
Your eyes travel from his long lashes, to the tip of his cute little nose, before settling onto his smooth lips that were slightly pouting. You were so close you could kiss him, but that would be weird. Your thoughts fought with each other as it raced with scenarios that could happen.
What were you saying? You can’t keep thinking about this, Akaashi’s your friend and has been since you were in kindergarten. You didn’t even know if he liked guys. Right… if you were to tell him, he would probably call you a freak and a stalker.
The thoughts keep flooding and some hurt more than others. You turn to face the wall, letting a few drops of tears fall. You tried your best to not let out a sound but you couldn’t stop yourself from sniffling. Just as you were about to fall asleep, a voice erupts from behind you.
“Y/n are you jealous of Keiko?”
You freeze. Why would he be saying that? Did he see you stare? Or were you really that obvious? You didn’t know how to respond, you didn’t even want to move. The sound of your heart was beating so loud in your ears that it made you panic even more.
“If you’re wondering why I’m asking you, I’ve known you since we were 4.” His voice was quiet, only loud enough for you to hear, and it sent chills up your spine.
By now your eyes were wide, tears streaming down even more. You bite your lip to prevent your breathing shake. You really couldn’t come up with a response. He continues when you don’t reply.
“It’s been a year, you seriously think I wouldn’t notice?”
Akaashi knows when you gaze at him, but he never meets your eyes. He notices the hugs that were a little longer than usual. He notices your touches grow more and more frequent each time you meet whether it be a faint brush of your fingers when you pass him something or you placing a firm hand in his shoulder as you great him when you arrive to class in the morning.
A year? Had it really been a year. Were you really in love with him this entire time, did you forget or were you oblivious by your own feelings that you couldn’t see how you were acting around him? You wanted to turn and see the look on his face, it was probably disgust. You can’t tell if he’s upset or not, his speech was affected by his tiredness.
“You don’t remember do you?”
Remember?
Akaashi did feel a tinge of disappointment when he saw your lack of response. Maybe you were mad at him because he let that girl Keiko talk to him longer than needed. Maybe you were mad at him because maybe you do remember and he wasn’t showing signs of what he swore he felt. He just wanted you to talk to him.
“I know I should stop letting these girls give me love letters, but I hoped you would’ve stepped in for me and say that I'm not interested. Is that strange?”
He sighs, you haven’t moved an inch. He was hesitant, but he moved closer to you, close enough to feel the heat radiate off your body. Maybe he shouldn’t have confronted you about this, it felt like wrong timing.
“Remember that night you stole alcohol from your parents? You were pissed drunk, maybe they weren’t true words but you said…”
You felt shame creep up to you, a frown settled on your face at your failure to remember. You knew you shouldn’t have drunk most of the bottle.
“You told me that you were in love with me.”
Oh.
Maybe you did remember. You probably shoved that memory down subconsciously to prevent yourself from being embarrassed, you remember, it was a clear small chunk of memory. You also remember the amount of girls you hooked up with to prevent yourself from falling for Akaashi even more, but it obviously didn’t work, you only wanted him even more because those girls weren’t him.
“Do you… you know what nevermind. I’m sorry if you found this weird, forget I said anything–“
“Akaashi.”
You finally turn, eyes slightly red from crying. He was so pretty under the moonlight, his upturned brows and wide worried eyes made your heart skip a beat. You would be lying if you didn’t want to suffocate him in a hug right then and there.
“Tell me what you said that night.” Your voice was stern, but you could tell that you were trying to hide a cry.
“I’m sure you remember–“
“I want to hear you say it again.”
You pull yourself closer to him, eyes never leaving his as you search for something within. You cup his cheek, inching your face closer and closer. Akaashi feels his cheek heat up. Luckily, you couldn’t see his blush under the blue tones from the night.
He hesitates, but says it clearly. The words replayed in your head over and over, you have to make sure you heard it correctly and you weren’t hallucinating. Instead of heartbreak, you felt relief. It wasn’t what you expected for him to feel.
“I love you.”
You wasted no time in pressing your lips against his. And oh how it felt so good to finally be able to do so. Every single memory of your display of affection towards him flashed in your mind. You had been practically hinting at it, but you denied your feelings and called it friendliness.
If you could have a moment you could replay on a loop when you died, it would be this one. You lay almost on top of him with your face in the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent. Your leg was placed across his thighs as your arm was resting on his chest, your hand tangled in his hair.
This was the intimacy you craved, and so did he.

Divorce
Summary: Kuwabara watches Yusuke play a game and thinks about his best friend and secret crush. (chapter 4 to a Kuwameshi story I’m writing on ao3, but the chapter works as a nice stand alone-most of them do. I just thought i’d post it here too because I liked it so much. 1600+ words)
***
Di·vorce
1. the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body.
Kuwabara slept through most of Friday, and could barely remember Saturday. What bits he could remember, was Yusuke checking in on him, or the faint smell of nicotine as a hand pressed against his forehead. But for the most part, Kuwabara was blissfully unaware of the world, sleeping through the weariness and fever that had brought him down.
At around 3 am on Sunday, Kuwabara woke up and stayed awake.
He was super awake.
Shifting in his bed, he sat up, two sleepy grumpy cats sliding off his chest, while a small heavy lump, remained clinging to his hair. Kuwabara yawned, blinking in the darkness of his room, listening as Eikitchi chittered at Tomi, calling the young feline to her for snuggles. Lifting his hand, Kuwabara placed a hand on the lump clinging to the top of his head, and squeezed it gently.
Puu squeaked back groggily.
Kuwabara chuckled, gently pat Puu's butt, and got out of bed, the miniature phoenix clinging to him. He was a comfortable familiar weight on Kuwabara's head.
Kuwabara shuffled into his bathroom, and splashed some water on to his face, and then meandered into his living room, where the glow of the t.v. let Kuwabara know where Yusuke was.
Yusuke was indeed in the living room, sitting on the floor, playing a video game with the sound off. His hair was cleaned of all its gel, and mussed up in an endearingly sweet tangled mess. He'd stripped down to just his shirt and underwear, and she sat in a mess of blankets on the floor, his back leaned up against the couch. Opened cans of beer and juice were on the coffee table, along with a few open bags of chips. Kuwabara would normally complain about the mess, but since Yusuke had been taking care of him, Kuwabara decided to let it slide.
Quietly, Kuwabara joined Yusuke, the shorter man pausing his game to smile at Kuwabara.
"Hey big guy, you're up!" Yusuke greeted, his voice soft and jovial.
"Hey..." Kuwabara said back, settling comfortably next to his friend. Yusuke tossed some blankets over Kuwabara's lap, and then when he spotted Puu snatched the bird from Kuwabara's head.
"I told you to leave Kuwabara alone," Yusuke sighed, dropping the now sulking phoenix in his lap. Puu glared defiantly up at Yusuke, and hopped back over to Kuwabara's lap.
Kuwabara blocked Yusuke from taking Puu back, his hands cupping the precocious blue bird protectively.
"Ah, he didn't bother me," Kuwabara chuckled.
Yusuke snorted, but withdrew his hands.
He watched with a calm expression as Kuwabara continued to curl his hands around Puu, tenderly pulling the spirit beast against his body. Kuwabara's hands sought Puu out, and cradled the warm creature against his stomach with one hand, while with the other, he stroked Puu the entire length of his body. The phoenix hummed with delight, settling further in Kuwabara's lap, crooning with pleasure as Kuwabara stroked the length of his body with his hand.
Yusuke eyed Puu with a scowl, but unpaused his game, and plopped his head against Kuwabara's shoulder.
Yusuke left the sound off, and the two enjoyed the silence together as Yusuke's character was told his Princess was in another castle.
"Fucking Toad," Yusuke muttered.
"It's not his fault she's not here," Kuwabara pointed out, smiling as Yusuke glared at the pixelated character on the screen.
"Yes, it is!" Yusuke hissed, moving on to the next level, still frowning at the screen.
Kuwabara chuckled and plopped his own head on top of Yusuke's. The arrangement was comfortable. They drifted back into silence and Yusuke continued to progress the game as Kuwabara watched. Kuwabara's eyes eventually drifted to Yusuke's hands, and for a short time, Kuwabara listlessly stared at Yusuke's thin fingers as they smashed the buttons of the controller.
The light of the screen shifted, and Yusuke's hands were lit up in a blue color. Instinctively, Kuwabara found himself looking at Yusuke's left ring finger. He always expected there to be a tan line, or some evidence that a ring used to be there... but the finger was as unassuming as the rest of Yusuke's fingers. Unless you knew, you would never be able to tell Yusuke had been married once.
Yusuke and Keiko had split three years ago.
There was no animosity. No big blow up. They drifted together in a big climatic romantic gesture when Yusuke returned from demon world, and then like the tide, drifted apart. No one knew the exact reason, but Keiko in confidence had told Kuwabara that Yusuke and her were better friends than lovers. It took a couple years of marriage for her to realize that. Her love for Yusuke was different, and Yusuke didn't quite get that.
"It's better to end it now, than to resent him later when he also understands that he'll never fully belong to me," She had said with a sigh, before looking directly at Kuwabara. The two had grown very close during Yusuke's absence, and Kuwabara made sure that they remained that way even after Yusuke got back. And especially after her's and Yusuke's divorce.
"He's a fighter... he belongs to battle," Kuwabara had admitted reluctant, sad, and proud all at the same time. He put an arm around Keiko, and she laughed, and sighed, pressing her cheek against Kuwabara's chest.
"Oh, Kuwabara... not just battle," She said with a knowing chuckle.
She never explained herself, and Kuwabara wouldn't ask her too.
Still, sometimes Kuwabara found it so strange that the pair had split. He had thought... Kuwabara had thought Yusuke and Keiko had been made for each other. And despite his new realization of being in love with his best friend, he couldn't find himself happy about the pair's divorce.
Even if nothing had seemingly changed. Yusuke still hung out with Keiko all the time. Still made her mad, and made her laugh. Nothing had changed. They were the same as always.
Maybe that too was the problem. Kuwabara couldn't recall a time when Yusuke had initiated a kiss with Keiko other than their wedding ceremony. Was that how love was supposed to be? No... probably not. Kuwabara looked at Yusuke's ringless finger.
Probably not.
"Ah, fuck this princess!" Yusuke sighed putting the game controller on the coffee table.  He shifted, Kuwabara pulling away from Yusuke, so the shorter man could rake a hand through his hair. He yawned, dragging a hand over his face, and then looked at Kuwabara, grinning.
"You look a lot better!"
Kuwabara smiled back, "Almost two days of beauty rest will do that to ya."
Yusuke snorted, and pat Kuwabara's cheek, "I think you need a little more rest... you're not done."
"Ah, fuck you," Kuwabara snorted rolling his eyes. Kuwabara stroked his face, "I am a beautiful man!"
Yusuke laughed but didn't disagree. Kuwabara felt foolish for feeling his heart pick up at that... especially since Yusuke had teased him just a second ago. Kuwabara tried to just focus on Yusuke's laugh; it was childish and infectious, and Kuwabara soon joined in. It was impossible not to.
"Glad you're looking better... Kurama will be glad to hear it. He was worried about you," Yusuke said as their laughter died down.
"He should be a doctor! His medicine is always the best," Kuwabara said shifting Puu in his arm. The phoenix was asleep.
"Yeah, well it's not always legal," Yusuke snickered.
Kuwabara grunted in agreement.
"So, since you have Monday off... how about we get the guys together and hang out? We could go to the shrine, or even visit Mukuro and Hiei at their place," Yusuke suggested. He made a face, "She's always asking about you. She likes you more than anyone else! More than Hiei!"
Kuwabara snickered as Hiei's jealous scowl popped up in his head, "Well, she has excellent taste."
"She looks at me like I'm a dried out dog-turd on the sidewalk sometimes, but you! You're dumbass flashed a grin at her and brought her some store-bought cookies, and she thinks you're the best!" Yusuke complained.
"Well, like I said... she has excellent taste."
Yusuke tackled Kuwabara to the ground, and in the small space between the couch and the coffee table, the two wrestled, giggling and swearing. Puu, disturbed from his sleep, managed to escape the flailing limbs and flew off to settled himself on Kuwabara's lounge chair. Puu went back to sleep. Kuwabara knocked his knee against the coffee table, and Yusuke pinned the taller man down as he swore.
Sitting on Kuwabara's waist with triumph, his legs squeezing around Kuwabara's sides, Yusuke smiled down at Kuwabara.
"Easy, I'm a sick man!" Kuwabara grumbled.
"Were," Yusuke said back, tone haughty and eyes teasing.
Kuwabara frowned, snorting petulantly.
"So... Monday?" Yusuke peppered again, leaning down and keeping Kuwabara's wrists pinned to the carpeted floor.
"Yeah... that sounds great. I could use a day in the Makai, and I miss Mukuro anyway," Kuwabara tried to tug his hands away from Yusuke experimentally.
Yusuke did not let up.
"What about today?" Kuwabara asked, letting himself remained trapped beneath his best friend.
"Today," Yusuke said, the word unexpectedly soft as it slipped passed his lips.
He squeezed Kuwabara's wrists again, his thumbs siding into Kuwabara's palms. Kuwabara closed his hands around them squeezing them gently.
"Today is just gonna be for us," Yusuke said, smiling down at Kuwabara, his willing captive.
Yusuke's hands slid up and fully into Kuwabara's hands. They held hands smiling at each other, Kuwabara's heart racing for the time the pair were connected in that way.
Yusuke then headbutted Kuwabara, and took off, which would lead to Kuwabara giving chase to his best friend around his poorly lit apartment at around 4 a.m. in the morning.

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Forty-Seven
Chapter Forty-seven: Proposal
Keiko’s POV:
Keiko let out a sigh, the shinigami’s words echoing in her mind, ‘I care about Misa…and if anyone tries to do anything to hurt her in any way…mark my words…I’ll kill them.’ I don’t know why Rem is so protective over Misa, but at this point, that doesn’t matter…what matters is, if anyone goes against Misa in any way, they’ll be killed...and if I know anything  at all about L, then I know that he still thinks that Light Yagami is Kira and Misa Amane is the Second Kira. That being said, I assume he also suspects that those last two rules could be fake…but, if he does anything, he’ll be Rem’s next target…there must be something I can do…there has to be a way, there just has to be.
The girl glanced over at her ex-boyfriend. At Kira. He was typing away on his laptop, as casual as ever. Keiko supposed if she wasn’t numb with worry, she would have cried. After all, that would be a relatively normal reaction upon discovering for a fact that you dated a mass murderer who probably never truly cared for you at all. However, she didn’t have the urge to cry at all.
I meant it when I told Rem that, on some level, I always sort of knew that Light Yagami is Kira. I just didn’t want to believe it. Now, there’s quite literally no denying it anymore. The shinigami confirmed it herself; Light Yagami is Kira and Misa Amane is the Second Kira.
I dated a monster. Her stomach gave an involuntary lurch. There was a bad taste in her mouth, no, I was in love with a monster. All he did was use me. He never cared about me. He never loved me. And Misa…knowing Light, he used her. He used her like he used me. And, if they both have their memories back, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’d use her again…after all, it seems it would be way too risky for him to act as Kira himself while he’s still investigating alongside L and I. Misa, on the other hand, could easily act as Kira once more. She’s been freed, no more surveillance for her. And, if she starts killing again, L will know for a fact that she is, in fact, the Second Kira. Knowing him, he will want to test out the last two rules at that point. I already suspect that he thinks those rules are fake, but Kira killing again will allow him to freely express this theory about the notebook…but, if he does that, he becomes Rem’s victim…wait a second!
Keiko’s eyes widened, and she had to stifle a gasp. She didn’t want to draw any attention to herself, she couldn’t let Light know that she now knew the truth, no way! Was this Light’s plan all along?! Is this how he wants to get rid of L once and for all?! I don’t believe it! But…I have to say, it makes perfect sense…Light’s a genius, he had to have figured out that Rem has a soft spot for Misa. He’s using those fake rules, and Rem, as a way to ensure that neither he nor Misa gets caught! I can’t let him get his way! I have to stop this somehow…but how? I need a plan, and fast! If Misa has her memories and her powers back, then it’ll probably be a matter of time until criminals start to die again! If that happens…then…L will want to test the rules! No! I can’t let him! Perhaps I can try and speak to him alone…but first, I need a plan… I can’t make any mistakes, not when L’s life is on the line!
Keiko looked around, spotting the shinigami in the corner of the room. Her eyes narrowed, so, you’re willing to kill anyone who hurts Misa, hmm? Wait a second…if that’s true then…why haven’t you killed Light? After all, you must know that he’s using her, right? …is it because she’s infatuated with him? However, Light’s still putting Misa in some rather dangerous situations…if it weren’t for you, Rem, Misa would easily be convicted of being Kira, that is, if she started killing again and the fake rules were tested…after all, she’s the one sticking her neck out if she kills again. Wait...Rem, do you realize that Light is probably planning on using Misa again? Even if you don’t know, shouldn’t you be mad at Light for having used her in the past? If you care about Misa, truly care about her, then shouldn’t seeing how carelessly Light treats her upset you? Wait…! I think I’ve got it…I think I’ve got a plan! It’s a long shot but, if Rem truly cares about Misa and Misa’s well being, then it should work! But, first, before I put this plan into action, I need to speak with L…I can’t let him do anything risky.
“Ryuzaki-san,” Keiko stood up, looking over at the raven haired detective. She could feel Light’s curious gaze on her back, but she didn’t allow herself to look in his direction.
Just wait. I’ll be getting to you later…
L looked up from the monitors, “yes? What is it?”
“May I please speak with you alone?  I, er…” she trailed off. She knew she was probably being paranoid, but she was hesitant to say that she wanted to talk to him about the investigation. There was no way she wanted Light to question why she’d want to talk to L alone about the investigation, she figured that would only make him suspicious. Making Light suspicious was the last thing she wanted to do.
It’s better if I don’t say aloud what I want to speak with him about…
Luckily for her, it appeared that the detective caught on to her hesitancy.
“Of course,” he replied. “I assume it’s a personal matter, right?”
“Y-yeah,” Keiko managed to stutter out. She flashed him a soft smile, knowing Light was still watching her.
I don’t need Light knowing how worried I am…after all, why would I worried because we’ve managed to ‘catch’ Kira? And anyway, now Higuchi’s dead…with him dead and Light and Misa cleared from suspicion, I shouldn’t have much to be concerned about at the moment.
“Alright,” the detective stood up. “Then let’s go.”
/timeskip/
“We’ll be safe here,” L announced as he led her into one of the headquarter’s safe rooms. “The walls are soundproof, so even if one were to try to eavesdrop, they wouldn’t have any luck…”
“Thank you, Ryuzaki-san,” Keiko said softly.
It’s funny, she thought bitterly to herself, I wanted to get L alone to scold him about before, and now…now I have to worry about whether or not he’ll even still be alive. Now my main concern isn’t my feelings, but rather, ensuring his safety… anyway, what’s more important, my feelings or his life?
The detective gave a slight nod, looking her over as he did so. “Now, what is it you wanted to talk about?”
“You’re in danger…” Keiko met L’s eyes, letting her facade from earlier fall away. She knew there was no reason to hide around him. There was sadness in her voice as she added, “but you already knew that, right?
At this, the detective was silent, but she couldn’t help but notice the look in his eyes. He was pensive, and dare Keiko say, a bit scared.
Her heart dropped, so I was right…he knows…and it appears even the world’s greatest detective gets scared sometimes.
When he didn’t speak, she continued on, “you were right, you know. You were right all along. About everything. Light Yagami is Kira and Misa Amane is the Second Kira. I know that for a fact. It’s the only thing that makes sense...”
“Not according to those rules, they’re not,” the detective spoke. His voice, though firm, was soft. “According to those rules, they’re cleared of all suspicion.”
That might be true but…
Keiko rolled her eyes, “you and I both know those rules are fake.”
At this, L glanced at her, his dark eyes meeting hers. “That might be true, Kagami-san, but we’d only be able to test that theory if-”
“No!” Keiko exclaimed suddenly. She shook her head. The detective quirked an eyebrow, shocked yet curious at her outburst.
She continued on, ignoring the questioning look that L was giving her. “Not even then...even if the killings start again, we can’t test those rules…at least, not yet. If you test those rules, then you won’t be safe. You have to give me your word that you won’t do that right now, not even secretly.”
At this, L took a slight step towards her,“but, Kagami-san…”
Keiko swallowed hard. She could feel her emotions slowly starting to catch up with her. Even though it had been a while since she last cried, she could feel her eyes threatening to water and her voice threatening to crack, “no! If you-if-if you…Rem will k-you’ll be…”
“Kagami-san,” the detective repeated. Even though Keiko was unable to finish her sentence, he seemed to know exactly what she couldn’t force herself to say. Once again, his voice was soft. “From the very beginning, I knew I was taking a risk...I knew there was always a possibility that I’d-”
“No! Y-y-you can’t-” Keiko choked out, “I-I can’t let that happen. I won’t let that happen.”
I can’t lose you…I can’t let Light win! She took a shaky breath, attempting to calm herself. It’ll be okay, Keiko Kagami...trust in yourself, you have to trust in yourself. You have to be confident for him, and show him that he can trust in you.
She stepped towards him, attempting to control her emotions. Keiko knew that she had to be strong, despite her worry. Her voice was slightly less shaky as she announced, “I have a plan, Ryuzaki-san…”
“Kagami-san-”
“No,” Keiko looked at him as she took another step forward, slowly closing the space between the two of them. “Listen to me. Please listen to me. Right now, you’re a sitting duck. If you test those rules, then you’ll be killed immediately. I know that, you know that. You can’t say anything about wanting to test those rules. You can’t. Please. Even if you don’t do anything...you’re still a target…but my plan…it’s a long shot, and it’s risky, but it’s better than nothing. It’s better than sitting around waiting for you to die.”
L took another step towards her, his eyes meeting hers. “What is it?”
Keiko bit her lip, “I’m afraid I can’t tell you that. Not yet. Not until the time comes. It’d be too risky. But, please, just trust me. I know what I'm doing.”
Or rather, I know what I want to try to do, in order to protect you…and capture Kira once and for all...
“Kagami-san,” the detective was about to speak but Keiko cut him off once more.
Please! Please trust in me, L! I want to do this! No, I have to do this!
There was desperation in her voice as she continued on. “I know, I know…there’s a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t let me do this. It’s a long shot, it’s risky, and I’ve let Light manipulate me before, I’m still a rookie, I can let my emotions get to me…but please,” before she could fully understand what she was doing, she reached forward. She found L’s hand and lightly held onto it with her own, “let me do this. For you. This might be the only chance we have at saving your life.”
L’s eyes slightly widened at her touch, and Keiko could feel her cheeks turning red as she realized what she had done. She loosened her grip, and was about to let go when all of the sudden L entwined his fingers with hers.
“R-Ryuzaki-san…” her heart pounded. Once again, she could feel her face starting to heat up at the unexpected contact.
What’s going on right now? L, the world’s greatest detective, holding my hand?! What is this? …is this…is this real? Is this really happening right now? This isn’t like him at all…
“I wasn’t going to say any of those things at all, Kagami-san,” his voice was even softer than before. There was a glimmer of something, perhaps hope, in his voice.  “If you say you have a plan…I suppose I’ll have to trust you...after all, I doubt I have anything left to lose.”
“L,” Keiko gave the detective a look of disbelief, her cheeks still tinged with pink, “are you…are you saying…?”
L gave a nod, “I’ll have to trust you, Keiko-chan…and if you don’t want me to test out those fake rules for the time being, then I won’t…though that will have to be done, eventually. I’m sure you understand that. No matter what, this case has to be solved.”
Thank goodness...and although I’m not sure if this plan will work or not, I am glad he’s at least letting me try. That alone means the world to me.
“Th-thank you…” Keiko stuttered out, “thank you for trusting in me. I’ll do my best.”
“I know,” the detective chuckled softly. There was a hint of a smile playing on his face as he added, “I know you will…you should give yourself more credit, you know. You’ve grown a lot from when I first met you. Although I’ve never met him, I’m sure your father would be proud…I know I am.”
He’s…proud…of me?
Keiko looked up at the detective, a soft smile playing on her lips. It had been a while since she had last been this happy. Before she could stop herself, she leaned her head upwards, and kissed the detective’s cheek.
“That’s the second time,” he murmured. Keiko watched as L brushed his free hand over his cheek, his eyes wide.
“Hmm?” Keiko’s eyebrows furrowed.
“The second time someone’s kissed my cheek,” he responded matter-of-factly.
“Oh…”
Right. The first time must’ve been that night with Misa, Keiko made a face of disgust, her good mood rapidly turning sour. She then dropped his hand, feeling the slight ache in her chest once more, I had been so distracted that I forgot about that…what was it he said again, ‘you know, Misa-chan, I could fall in love with you’...? Right, that was it, how could I ever forget?
L’s voice broke the silence. He sounded almost apologetic. “I didn’t mean what I said that night, you know…”
At this, Keiko scoffed. If you didn’t mean it, then why’d you say it?!
“If I were to fall in love with anyone…it’d be you.”
M-me?! Yeah, right…
“Me? Real funny, Ryuzaki-san,” Keiko was sure he could hear the bitterness dripping from her words, “you shouldn’t joke about that.”
You know how I feel about you…
“On the contrary, I was quite serious.”
Keiko, unable to decipher his tone, turned away from him. Before, she had wanted nothing more than to rip into him for what he had said that night, but now she found that she just didn’t want to talk about that night at all. Not now. She supposed she already had enough to deal with. She wanted him alive, yes, but she didn’t want to have false hope about his feelings. Therefore, she supposed it would be best if she left.
“I-I should go…they’re probably wondering what’s taking us so long.”
“Wait,” the detective reached forward, gently grabbing her hand once more. “Please don’t go yet, Kagami-san…”
He…wants me to stay?
Keiko stopped, letting L’s hand wrap around her own. She slowly turned back around to face him once more. His noticed his hand was a little sweaty as it gripped hers, but she had to admit, she liked feeling his warmth. She also noticed that the detective was awkwardly shuffling his feet.
Is he...is he nervous?
Although he seemed a bit hesitant, he looked right into her eyes as he spoke, “I’m sorry, Kagami-san. I’m sorry for hurting you. My behavior was inexcusable and I should have considered your feelings more.”
Keiko searched his eyes. From what she could tell, he was being sincere, he’s really serious about this...
“L,” she started to say, but he cut her off. Again, he seemed a bit nervous.
“I really am sorry. And I meant what I said just now…” his gaze, while still serious, was also thoughtful. “If I were to fall in love with anyone, it’d be you.”
If Keiko’s face hadn’t been red before, it was certainly red now. She could feel her heart going wild.
He-he-what?! Oh my-he’s serious…?!
“I know I’ve said this before but, I really did mean it when I said I kissed you because I wanted to…” the detective continued on, a mischievous glint in his eyes. For a moment, he was his usual self once more, “do you think I’d kiss just anyone, Keiko-chan? I…I think very highly of you…”
Wha-what?! He kissed me because he wanted to?! And he thinks very highly of me?! What is this? Then, when he complimented me all of those times, he really did mean it...but, what about what he had said afterwards?
“If you wanted to kiss me, then why’d you say it was a mistake?” the question rolled off Keiko’s tongue before she could stop herself.
“Do…do you really want to know?” L questioned, his eyes searching hers.
Unable to look away, Keiko nodded. “If you’re going to talk about this then just tell me the truth, please…”
It’s been on my mind since that night...
He exhaled slowly. “It was a mistake because…because I can’t let myself have feelings. For anyone. Considering my line of work, it’d be too dangerous...but you,” the detective chuckled softly. “You’ve almost...no, you have grown on me. Therefore, if I were to fall for anyone, it’d be you.”
Keiko was stunned, she’d never seen L talk so earnestly before. He was being terribly honest, perhaps the most honest she’d ever seen him. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
I...I honestly don’t know what to say. Am I dreaming? If he were to fall in love, it’d be with me?! I-I can’t believe...I can’t believe it.
Keiko was about to move her hand to pinch herself, but she realized that she couldn’t, because L was still holding it. It seemed that L realized this as well, because he suddenly let go of her hand. Although she could no longer feel the warmth of his hand, his confession was more than enough to warm her heart.
“I-I…” Keiko stuttered out, still trying to process everything.
He’s serious. I still can’t believe it! As happy as I am right now, I just can’t help but wonder why he’s telling me this. It’s just not like him...wait! No way! Keiko’s eyes widened at her sudden realization, is he only telling me this because...because he knows he might die soon? Is that why he’s being so honest with me?
“Kagami-san…” the detective started after a moment. It was only then that she realized he was still waiting for her to finish her sentence.
“I-I don’t know what to say,” Keiko finally spoke. She looked up at L, the ghost of a smile playing on her lips, “I’m flattered. Honestly. Hearing all that made me so happy. And...and now all I want to do is help keep you alive, and help to solve this case, no matter what. That’s all I want.”
Although his emotions were undeterminable, L had a soft expression on his face. Keiko noticed that he looked so vulnerable, so tender. It was something she wasn’t used to seeing. Before she could stop herself, she found herself staring at the detective’s lips. He was close, so close to her. Keiko wanted nothing more than to lean in and kiss that soft look right off his face. It was a purely selfish desire, Keiko knew that. It was also something she couldn’t allow herself to do.
Therefore, before she could give in, Keiko turned away from the raven haired detective. She gave a slow exhale in an attempt to calm her racing heart.
That was way too close! Did he notice I was staring…?
“Kagami-san…?” The detective prompted.
That tone...is he worried about me?
“Y-yes?” Keiko stuttered out. Even though she wasn’t facing him, her face was still turning a shade of pink.
“Are you alright?”
Am I alright? What does he think?!
“I-I’m as alright as I can be,” Keiko swallowed. “I, um, I should go. The others might get worried.”
With that, Keiko took her leave. She hurried down the hall, to safety, away from the detective.
There’s no way I can let myself kiss him. I can’t be selfish, not when he already told me how dangerous it would be for him. That would be too much! Right now all I can do is put my plan into action. This is the best way, no, the only way I can help him…Keiko Kagami, let’s do this!

I Need More Kuwabara/OC
I’m not mad about it or anything, but there are only two Kuwabara/OC fics on AO3 (that are tagged as such, at least).
... OK, so maybe I’m a little salty about this, because WHAT THE HECK DO YOU MEAN, THERE ARE ONLY TWO KUWABARA/OC FICS IN THE ENTIRE AO3 ARCHIVE?
FFnet is a bit better.
There are… six.
Six Kuwa/OC fics in the entire archive that are searchable via the tagging system.
............. ಠ╭╮ಠ  Excuse me??
Tumblr media
One is a drabble. One is a finished multi-chapter story (huzzah!) but it’s short (not a bad thing; I just really love long fics). The other four are unfinished multi-chapter stories, among them The Ghost in You.
… I’m not shocked. Kuwabara/Yukina is adorable and popular and basically canon so most people don’t have the heart to break them up. It’s the same reason there aren’t a lot of Yusuke/OC fics: Yusuke/Keiko is canon and popular. Not to mention Kuwabara got made fun of when the majority of the fanbase was younger and watching the show for the first time. Kuwabara’s amazingness has kind of only recently been realized by the fandom at large. He’s the goofball of the group and he’s not a bishounen pretty-boy like Kurama or a tsundere cutie like Hiei. People don’t look at him as a romantic interest, it seems.
So like I said: I’m not shocked by the dearth of Kuwabara/OC fics.
But I AM incensed by it.
Kuwabara is freaking fantastic and a model boyfriend. I’d date him first out of any of the YYH guys. My IRL boyfriend is basically Kuwabara made flesh and I love him so ding-dang much it hurts. Kuwabara SHOULD be the wish-fulfillment fantasy of most of us OC/Canon authors, but nOoOOoOooOoOo. He doesn’t have big green eyes or a bad attitude and therefore he gets the short end of the fandom stick. UNFAIR, NOT OKAY, I AM INCENSED BY THIS, WHY DON’T HIS GLORIOUS ABS DRAW IN MORE OF THE LADIES, I ASK YOU????
I MEAN???
JUST LOOK AT THEM???!?
Tumblr media
(*deep breath*)
I’m mostly just ranting in jest, of course, but I wanted to bring this up because someone recently said to me, “I can’t imagine Kuwabara with anyone but Yukina so I don’t read Kuwabara/OC fics.” Buuuuut there aren’t many Kuwabara/OC fics to even read in the first place, so it’s like… how many opportunities have readers actually had to see Kuwabara with another woman?
Do we, as a fandom, even know what Kuwabara would look like paired with an OC?
We pair him with some of the other guys sometimes, and those yaoi ships are decently popular (and also very cute), but for some reason we never seem to pair him with women other than Yukina though I have seen a few rogue Kuwabara/Keiko fics out there, which area neat, because I can totally see that pairing. I feel like it’s hard to imagine Kuwabara with any woman but Yukina because no one seems to write him with any woman but Yukina. Hard to imagine something that hasn’t been done before, at least not very often.
There’s really no point to these observations. I’m just happy to be forging into somewhat unexplored territory with The Ghost in You. Hopefully seeing Kuwabara with a woman other than Yukina might help authors who like the idea of Kuwabara/OC start writing their own stories, or at least feel like there’s someone out there who’d read their work? Wishful thinking, probably, but I can hope.
Honestly, I just want some Kuwabara/OC to read.
PLEASE. GIVE ME SOMETHING TO READ. I’M SO ALONE. (*sobs into her shirt*)
Tumblr media
also this post is definitely an excuse to use a lot of Kuwabara GIFs for my own personal amusement and joy SO DEAL WITH IT

Headshot
Wordcount: 1571 words Pairing: Souda x OC (Yamamoto Keiko) Rating: Explicit Warnings: Annoying boners and jerking off in the bathroom
because it was only a manner of time before I lewded this guy.
If you want more information on Keiko, I’ve put it up on twitter. In fact, I’m mostly posting this here so I can link it on my twitter, oops.
---
It’s cold.
I mean, it makes sense given that it’s January, but it’s still annoying.
Even in a tiny studio apartment that you think would be easy to heat, the cold seeps through the walls and chills the occupants.
The kotatsu is fine well into the evening, but once it’s time to unfurl the futons…
That’s how this whole predicament started.
Sheepish glances when one thought the other wasn’t looking, awkward shifting under the covers, night by night the futons creeping closer and closer together.
Yamamoto Keiko rolls over one night and looks at Souda Manabu. He’s so close that she could brush a stray hair out of his eyes if she reached out.
His eyes flick up from the phone in his hand.
“What’re you staring at? You’re being weird.”
“I wasn’t staring.”
“Buuuuullshit. What, can’t stop thinking about how cool your boyfriend is? Hehe!”
Keiko sighs and rolls onto her back. He was acting childish, but it still made her face heat up.
“I was just thinking about how cold it is.”
“Man, you can’t think about something more interesting?” Souda’s question is punctuated by a victory jingle ringing from his phone. “Woo-hoo, one-shot kill! Hehehehe, I’ve still got it!”
“STILL got it?” Keiko rolls onto her side to face him again. “You make it sound like you haven’t been able to play a lot, Manabu.”
Souda’s eyebrows furrow as his lips draw thin. “I haven’t! It’s been hard as hell keeping up since I’ve got this job, you know.” He pauses to sniff indignantly. “Plus, you know… I have a girlfriend to take care of now.”
“Oh, poor thing.”
Souda’s tongue hangs out as he laughs impishly. “Hey, my rank’s slipped a lot because of you! So?” His expression grows serious. “How are you going to make it up to me?”
Keiko’s eyes snap open. “Huh?”
Souda keeps on staring, until eventually his frown twitches and he bursts into more obnoxious laughter.
“Man, look at how red your face got! Tch, I was thinking you owed me a gacha pull or two… the hell’s on your mind? Per-vert!”
“I am not! Honestly!” Keiko wraps herself up in her blanket and rolls over so she doesn’t have to see his grin.
“Aw, come on, Cake. Your face is so red that you’re probably hotter than the kotatsu!”
Keiko’s ears perk when she hears the ‘AFK’ notification come from his phone.
….
She can feel him staring at her back…
Finally, she hears the covers shift.
“You and I both know how damn cold it is in here. …Come on. Heat us both up, why don’tcha?”
Keiko peeks back over her shoulder. A part of her is tempted to just say ‘nope’ and tease him more for his bad behavior, but…
He actually minimized his game.
“… You aren’t afraid I’ll do something perverted to you?”
“The hell do you think you’re talking to? I could totally take you if you tried anything!”
That confident smile of his is really cute… and he actually bothered to minimize his game…
Still trying to hide her red cheeks, Keiko slips out from under her blanket and darts under the covers on Souda’s futon.
It’s much warmer under there, though Keiko jolts when she remembers that they’re in their sleepwear. Souda usually only wears a game t-shirt and underwear to bed, and she’s reminded very much of that fact when their bare legs touch.
Keiko thinks she catches a glimpse of his blush before he yanks her towards him and turns her around, resting his chin on her head as he takes the role of ‘big spoon’.
“Come on, Cake… we’re boyfriend and girlfriend, right? This is how we’re supposed to do things… right?”
Keiko sighs as she shifts so her back is against Souda’s torso. She can practically feel his heartbeat drumming against her, and it makes her smile as she closes her eyes.
But she frowns when she feels Manabu move his arm and the telltale ‘beep beep’ of his game restarting.
“Manabu…”
“What? It’s multitasking, babe!”
-----
An hour passes in comfort. Even Souda shuts off his game a little quicker than usual. With Keiko asleep, he quietly leans down and kisses the top of her head. The fragrance of her hair is light and unobtrusive. Souda thinks that something like peach or strawberry would suit her better, but her job’s pretty strict about perfumes and scents.
“Mm…”
Souda freezes when Keiko stirs in her sleep. Not that he was embarrassed or anything, but it’d be a pain if she woke up all of a sudden!
But she just scooches back, shifting comfortably against her boyfriend for warmth.
Shifting… shifting…
That rubbing feels good…
She’s warm, too...
Souda’s eyes widen when he feels himself stirring—oh, hell no! No way, God should have more control than this--!
But it’s too late, his dick is standing practically straight up. Souda can hear his own pulse throbbing in his ear drums, mimicked by that idiot thing between his legs that seems to think that NOW is a good time to demand attention.
He hasn’t been this hard in a long time. He password protected his naughtier mobage games ever since he started dating Keiko, but he still played them when she wasn’t home. It isn’t like he’s been neglecting it or anything, so why is it so damn stiff?!
Souda shifts, trying to move it away from Keiko. He’d be in a hell of a lot of trouble if she woke up being poked in the ass by his stiffy.
Their first time is going to be hella romantic. He’ll lay her down on his futon with her hair streaming out behind her and make love to her until she’s trembling and crying his name like, “Ma—na-buuuu---!!”
Hehe…
…Okay, imagining that REALLY isn’t helping right now.
He closes his eyes and tries to ignore it, but…
Keiko stirs in her sleep again, drawn back against his warmth with a satisfied sigh.
!!
D-Damnit, she feels so soft…
Souda reaches down with trembling fingers and tries to stash his erection away, but it just pops back up.
He shoves it down again.
Boing!
“G-Ghh…”
He can’t stop it.
Shaking his head, Souda quickly rolls over and gets out of the futon, doing his best not to disturb Keiko sleeping next to him.
“Mm… Mana-chan…?”
“Gwuh?!”
She sounds so cute and sleepy, he can’t even be mad at that stupid nickname! But she can’t see him like this--!
Souda quickly pulls the front of his shirt down over his underwear and yells a little too loudly: “G-Gotta pee!” before stumbling into the bathroom.
He hears Keiko sigh and roll over as he shuts the door behind him.
Yeah, yeah that’s all… he just had to get up and go to the bathroom, that’s all.
But as Souda shoves his underwear down, his penis springs up to full attention, revealing his lie.
Damn, it’s really throbbing!
With a muttered curse, Souda gently pokes the pink head protruding from his foreskin.
“Annoying…”
With a grimace he wraps his hand around the shaft, beginning to tug at himself. He feels harder than the barrel of a gun, and that hardness pulses when it finally receives attention.
He closes his eyes and bites his lip to hold back the moan threatening to escape his throat.
Even with fabric separating them, Souda could feel the plushness of Keiko’s body when she pushed herself back against him.
He loosens his grip, thinking about how soft and gentle she’d be rubbing on him.
Precum has already started dribbling from his slit, and Souda rubs the wetness over the tip with his thumb.
Her lips feel great, too, they feel just as soft as the rest of her when they kiss. The thought of them puckering, kissing more than just his lips, roaming down and finally parting to pleasure this throbbing thing—
Souda convulses, his legs trembling as his dick begins to spit out its sticky orgasm.
“Shit!” he groans as he arches his back, watching with a grimace as it lands on the tile above the toilet. He usually doesn’t shoot that far…
“H-Heh… headshot…”
-----
Keiko looks at the bathroom door, unknowingly mimicking her boyfriend by biting her lip.
Souda thought he had held it back, but his pleasured groan reached Keiko’s ears and keeps on repeating in her mind.
More importantly-- and he didn’t even realize he did this— Keiko heard him say her name. No, he moaned it in the middle of his fantasy.
Embarrassed by the smile creeping on her face, Keiko rolls over so she’s facing away from the door.
It’s too late for tonight, but next time, maybe…
Keiko flinches when she hears the door open and Souda trudge back around to the futon.
“Huh? You’re up?”
“Ah, no, just… the bathroom light…”
“Yeah, well, when I get darkvision you’ll be the first one to know, Cake.”
Souda flops into the bed with an exhausted sigh and pulls Keiko to him like she’s a pillow.
When their bodies press against each other, Keiko can feel his softening erection against her leg. He probably doesn’t even realize it.
She smiles a little to herself, allowing her mind to wander.
Finally, she takes a deep breath. “Manabu?”
But he’s breathing deeply, and a contented, sleepy mumble is the only answer she gets.

“did i ever tell you how beautiful your eyes are?” Yusuke and Keiko
GOD you choose the cheesiest shit for these two and I love it
a sappy fic for a sappy dude:
He doesn’t want to call her a nag.
It’s unfair to her, because every time Keiko reminds him ofsomething (no matter how, well, forcefully she does it) it’sbecause he legitimately forgot. Sometimes Kuwabara will say stupid things tohim like “Urameshi, you’d lose your head if it wasn’t screwed on already”and as much as that shit pisses him off, he’s totally right. Being ahigh-ranking demon descendant changed Yusuke in a lot of ways, but it certainlydidn’t make him any better at chores or finishing his to-do lists in a timelymatter.
He also won’t call her one because he’s pretty sure she’dkill him.
“When was the last time you did laundry? This place is amess!”
That’s how Keiko greets him the second she comeshome from university to visit him.
“Missed you too, babe,” he says casually, trying not to letthe comment needle him.
She rolls her eyes, but there’s a fondness in her smile thatmeans she’s not really upset. She tips her face up to give him a quick kiss, and Yusuke marvels again at how tall she’d grown while he was away in DemonWorld. Whenever he’d fantasize about kissing her (which he didn’t do that much, shut up) he’d always imagined her reaching up on her tiptoes and him bendingdown a bit to meet her halfway.
But literally everything about kissing Keiko is better thanhis fantasies. He chases her kiss with another one, just because he can, because he really did miss her. It sucked that he’d only beenback to Human World for a short period of time before she had to leave forschool. He didn’t realize how horrible it felt to be left behind until he wasthe one left waiting. The thought makes him kiss her a third time, for goodmeasure.
“Someone sure is affectionate today,” Keiko saysgood-naturedly.
“How long are you home for?” Yusuke asks.
“Three days. We got a long weekend.”
It still has him frowning. Three days isn’t long enough.
“Where’s your mom?”Keiko asks, looking around their apartment and noticing the not-untypicalabsence of one Atsuko Urameshi.
“Out,” he says with a scoff. “‘Living her thirties theway she should have lived her twenties’ or some shit like that.” It certainlywasn’t his fault she got pregnant as a teenager, thoughsometimes that was the impression he got from his mother’s bad attitude. If hethought about it more he’d probably be angry with her, but it’s not like she’sthe person Yusuke wants to spend time with right now anyways.
Keiko practically reads his mind. “So we’re alone?”
He grins wide. “Yep!”
He leans in to go back to his favorite recreational activityinvolving Keiko, but he must have misread the room somehow because instead ofbeing met with her lips, Keiko’s slipping past him and leaving him grasping atempty air.
“Good! That gives us plenty of time to clean this place up.”
Yusuke can only blink, a bewildered look stuck on his face. She’s not serious, right?
But she’s picking up dirty clothes from the living roomfloor. Like, yeah, they probably shouldn’t be there, but is that really theirbiggest concern right now?
“Uhh, Keiko?” Yusuke asks, trying to keep the bite from histone.
“Hmm?” she says. She looks up at him and looks so innocentlyconfused that he only wants to kiss her more which makes thiswhole thing even more exasperating.
“Do we really have to do this now?”
Her hands are on her hips now, and Yusuke feels like he’ssomehow done something wrong even though his reaction seems extremely logical.
“The only way this place gets cleaned up is when I’m around,Yusuke! Excuse me for caring about your health and well-being enough to want toclean up this pig sty!”
“You’re only here for three days, Keiko! You just said ityourself! Are you really gonna spend the entire time you’re here nagging at me likewe’re still in middle school?”
Her expression turns even more cross. He’s said the wordthat he’s been trying so hard to avoid and now she’s mad andthis isn’t supposed to be how this weekend was supposed to go. He wants to backto kissing her but he can’t do that now that he’s pissed her off becausethat’ll only make her even more mad.
“Did I ever tell you how beautiful your eyes are?” he saysweakly.
Her expression doesn’t change.
“I’m serious!” Yusuke says, following this train of thoughtbecause it seems safer than reminding her that she’s nagging him just like shewould when they were kids. He needed the nagging then, too, but it’s not likehe can admit that to her.
He reaches out and takes her hand, still fisted and restingfirmly on her hip. She lets him, which feels like a start.
“Most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen,” he says, thumb grazingher knuckles and looking at the eyes in question, which are still lookingroyally pissed at him for being a slob and an asshole on top of it. “Theywere all I could think about when I was in Demon World trying to get shit inorder.” He squeezes her hand. “They’re all I think about when you’re awayat school.” He lets himself smile crookedly. “They’re even beautiful whenthey’re glaring at me.”
Her eyebrows waver for a moment, and then her expressionloses its heat. She rolls her eyes again and her smile returns.
“You’re such a jerk,” she says, which probably means ‘Ilove you.’
“You’re my favorite nag,” he says, which definitelymeans ‘I love you.’
She snatches her hand away from him to flick him in thenose.
“We can go get something to eat first.” She concedes. “Then weclean this place up.”
This sounds like a decidedly better plan. But there’ssomething that needs to happen first. When he pulls her in to kiss her thistime, he doesn’t stop at one, or two, or three.

Digimon 00 - Fragments - 32
The rhythmic clicking of keys and mouse were the only things to break up the monotonous silence in the bedroom, aside from the occasional weary sigh. Ryo tried not to look back at his bed, where Wormmon lay sprawled on his back, staring at the clock. The books, snacks, and portable gaming system Ryo had given him to entertain himself lay scattered around him, now ignored in favor of watching time pass.
Ryo glanced at his computer clock to verify the time and let out a chuckle that was far too forced for his taste. “I know you’re excited, Wormmon, but the cherry blossoms will still be there even if we have to wait an extra hour.”
“I know,” Wormmon muttered as he focused intently at the long hand of the clock as it diligently ticked to the next minute. “Ken-chan is only late because he must be spending time with his family. Maybe things are getting better between them and they’re all doing something fun.”
Ryo could practically hear Wormmon’s unspoken “without me” at the end. He tried his best to remain optimistic, however, and flashed the Digimon a smile. “Yeah, that’s probably it. Maybe Ken and Osamu are playing a video game together.”
Wormmon nodded with a quiet hum. “Yeah… I hope Ken-chan is having fun.” An awkward silence settled in until the minute hand moved forward one more small increment. “Though, I hope Ken-chan will get here soon too.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Ryo said, swiveling in his chair to fully face Wormmon. “Hey, you know what’d help us pass the time while we wait? A nice game of-”
The laptop monitor suddenly flared with a golden light, outshining the sun spilling in from the windows outside. Ryo jerked back with a cry of alarm and shielded his eyes while Wormmon rushed forward blindly to defend his friend. Ryo barely had a moment of deja vu before the light engulfed them both.
When the light was gone, the room was empty, and the laptop shut down completely.
---
While the room was officially stated to belong to both Osamu and Ken, there was an unspoken understanding that it was Osamu’s room first and foremost. When the eldest Ichijouji needed to study, it went without saying that Ken was to vacate the room and make himself as scarce as possible so as to not bother Osamu in his important work.
The fact that Osamu was always studying was irrelevant.
Osamu typed away at the computer, his eyes focused intently on the screen. He ignored everything else, his attention entirely devoted to his work. He was so focused that, when the screen suddenly shifted to the face of an unfamiliar blond-haired man with angelic wings, it completely disrupted both his train of thought and his balance, causing the eldest Ichijouji child to cry out as he fell backwards right out of his chair and onto the floor, taking his keyboard with him.
“Ken!” Higashi said, desperately. “Ken, are you there?”
“What the hell!?” Osamu shouted, gawking at the angel on his computer screen.
Higashi stared down at Osamu, then furrowed his brow before he craned his neck to look for the younger Ichijouji. He hesitated, before finally addressing the only child before him. “Is Ken not home?”
“Who the hell are you!?” Osamu sputtered, pointing at Higashi. “And how the hell did you hack into my computer!?”
Higashi hesitated before he glanced off screen, his expression uneasy. After a moment of deliberation, he sighed heavily and returned his attention to Osamu. “I am Higashi. I am… a Digimon, and a friend of your younger brother.”
Osamu was on his feet in an instant, quaking with rage. “You!”
Higashi didn’t bother to hide his exasperation, as Osamu reacted precisely as he expected. “So you will not tell me where Ken is? Or do you simply not know?”
Osamu clenched his fists so tight that his fingernails bit into his skin. “Why the hell do you want Ken so badly? Go target some other kid who doesn’t know any better and leave my brother alone!”
Higashi looked at Osamu in silence for several moments, then sighed. “I’m sorry, but I really don’t have time for this. If Ken isn’t there, I need to find him.”
“For what?” Osamu demanded. “To throw him at monsters? To put him in another coma? To shove more lies down his throat that he’s some sort of ‘hero’?! He can’t even stand up to kids his own age, and you’re feeding him anime garbage about being some sort of chosen one who’ll save the world!”
Higashi grimaced and was about to retort when a pen-click interrupted him. He turned to his side and stared as Zennyu suddenly took over the screen, glaring hard at Osamu.
“Considering your world will be destroyed if we don’t reach him, I would say that qualifies him as a hero - as a Chosen Child.” Zennyu said, his tone sharp. “Your lack of faith in him is your issue, and yours alone.”
Though taken aback by the appearance of the darker, much more intimidating angel, Osamu continued to glare at the screen. The words stung, especially in the wake of the rift that had grown between him and Ken, but he shook them off as the manipulations of a kidnapper with sinister intent. “Why the hell should I believe either of you?”
Zennyu clicked his pen and a small screen suddenly appeared in the corner of the monitor, like a video feed. In it, Osamu saw a strange white void filled with what appeared to be metal beams jutting out in all directions, like a chaotic construction zone. In that void, several creatures fought one another - a large spindly beast that looked like a demonic marionette against four combatants. At that moment, a small orange dinosaur and furred beast-like dinosaur were glowing with light just as the screen settled on them.
“If you do not believe words, then will you believe your own eyes?” Zennyu asked, his words cutting. He didn’t bother to wait for a response. “An enemy has invaded your world and is currently wreaking havoc. They are targeting the other Chosen Children and has already leaked their information all across the world. They have hijacked nearly all electronic devices in your city - crippling your ability to communicate. If nothing is done, then you, and everyone you deem important, are at risk of death.”
Osamu stared at the screen, as the angel’s words faded into nothing more than background noise. Instead, he was focused on the way the smaller of the creatures began to glow before changing. Before his very eyes, the diminutive dinosaur and beast were gone and in their place were two behemoths - a cybernetic wolf and a humanoid dinosaur covered in armor.
Realization dawned, and with it a sick feeling within the pit of his stomach. His impression of Wormmon had been that these ‘Digimon’ were actually quite small, manageable. The greatest threat seemed to be from their manipulation and the magical attack abilities Ken described to him. Their transformations added a whole new variable he hadn’t been expecting. This was only confirmed by the presence of two more small creatures - a beetle and flying hamster-pig hybrid - underwent their own metamorphosis into larger, far more imposing monsters.
Digimon might have started out small and diminutive, but could change their forms, becoming horrific beasts. If this ability was a common trait for these creatures, then there was little doubt that the insect that Ken claimed to be his partner had it as well. Visions of a massive centipede rampaging through the city filled Osamu’s mind, making his blood run cold.
“T-this is…” Osamu muttered.
“The other Chosen Children are currently fighting the enemy responsible, but they’re in dire need of assistance,” Higashi said as he shoved his head back in to view, brushing up against Zennyu in the process. “We need Ken to find Keiko so she may help them.” He then grimaced. “We can’t do it ourselves. She is currently away from all electronics, making it impossible for us to reach her.”
When Osamu didn’t immediately respond, the two angels glanced at each other. They shared a long look before returning their attention to the human child as he gaped at the screen, the fight continuing onward before his very eyes.
“Osamu?” Higashi asked, tentatively. “Are you listening?”
“M-monsters…,” Osamu said, his voice hoarse. “You really are monsters!”
Zennyu fixed Osamu with a deadpan stare before he gave a click of his pen.
Higashi furrowed his brow, then let out a resigned sigh. He didn’t verbally respond, instead immediately cutting the communication and reverting Osamu’s screen back the way it was before, save for the live video feed that continued to stream the fight in the corner. While they had no doubt made things more difficult for Ken in their attempts to appeal to his brother, they didn’t have time to concern themselves over it. They were rapidly running out of time.
Osamu slumped in his chair as he continued to watch the fight after the angels left him alone, moving only to enlarge the window to get a better view of the madness. As the demonic marionette abused and tormented the other Digimon, completely pulverizing two of them, all he could think of was Wormmon - the creature that had wormed its way into Ken’s life, and heart.
“I should have killed it when I had the chance…,” Osamu muttered.
---
Ken did his best to keep his expression neutral, trying not to show the irritation that he felt. He shifted weight between his legs, his hands holding two grocery bags apiece filled with food and whatever items his mother had dragged him out to buy. The fact that he was late to meet up with his friends because of her loitering only added salt to the wound.
If it had been just the trip itself, it wouldn’t have been so bad. But unfortunately, it was never that easy - not when there was gossip to be had.
Yui stood in a small circle of housewives, giggling at the latest bit of scandalous information. “He didn’t!”
“It’s true, I swear!” one wife said. “An entire box right under their bed! Can you believe it?”
“I can’t believe she never noticed,” Yui said, covering her mouth.
Another wife gave a shifty sideways look. “Well, if you ask me, it’s not surprising after hearing her complain so much about his performance the past couple years.”
Ken rolled his eyes before he let out a heavy sigh. It seemed that, like always, his mother forgot he was even there. But then, he may as well not have been for all she cared.
“Oh my God!”
Ken blinked as the horrified cry was enough to finally snap him at attention. He looked up, as did his mother and her gossiping friends, and glanced about in search of the person who had shouted. He immediately saw a large group of people staring off in the distance in varying degrees of hysteria and terror. Panic sparked inside of him as he quickly glanced about before looking up in to the sky, just in time to see a massive missile surging downward towards the center of the Tokyo Bay.
Ken gaped at the scene, his expression going blank as the bags of groceries fell from his limp fingers.
---
The dropping of the nuclear bomb was a horror witnessed in many in the nearby districts of Tokyo, including a small family playing in the outdoor heated pool at the Ryuzaki estate. Keiko stood at the edge of the pool, halfway up the ladder, completely drenched and wearing a simple dark patterned bathing suit as she stared at the sky, utterly aghast.
Nearby, Nyamon mirrored the expression on her face as she sat on a beach chair out of the water’s range. Slowly, her black sunglasses slid down her face before falling off entirely, landing on her lap.
Jin stood in the pool, the water coming up to his waist. He held a beach ball as if in mid-throw before he had come to an abrupt stop. Slowly, the beach ball fell from his frozen hands and landed on the water with a soft ‘plop’.
Keiko had only been frozen for the span of three heartbeats before she was out of the pool, racing along the paved path towards the house, past the shallow end of the pool where her brother’s wife Mina, a brunette with sharp almond eyes, sat with her little niece Sakura, staring at where the bomb fell. The black-haired, red-eyed toddler was the only one not on edge, giggling and splashing about.
“Buh bye Kei-Kei!” Sakura chirped as she waved at Keiko and then Nyamon who raced after her partner. “Buh bye Nya-Nya!”
Jin recovered at the sound of his daughter and whirled to stare after the Chosen of Darkness as she disappeared into the mansion. “Kei-”
Keiko was far too fast for her elder brother, as she promptly gated into the Digital World the moment she came within reach of an electronic device. The screen of the television flashed and, with a burst of black energy, she and Nyamon were gone.
---
Keiko was the first of the trio to arrive in the Digital World, appearing in the temple of Darkness. Upon arriving, her bathing suit was immediately replaced with her typical dress as she instantly became dry. She took no more than two steps before she felt a pair of arms wrap around her in a hug from behind.
Without even needing to look, she knew whose arms held her in a death vice - it was none other than Narakumon in his more “human” form. Though silent, his trembling arms spoke volumes of what he felt, as he buried his face in the back of her hair.
Keiko returned the embrace as best she could just as Tenraimon joined in. “I’m okay, Papa… Mama. What happened?”
Tenraimon leaned back to stroke Keiko’s hair while Narakumon continued to hug the little girl. Her smile turned sad before it faded into a grim mask. “A nuclear missile was dropped in Tokyo. Fortunately, it was disarmed before it could detonate, but, regardless, a Digimon tried to eliminate you, as well as the rest of the Chosen Children in your world.”
Keiko felt her blood run cold as Narakumon’s grip on her tightened, as though he was terrified she might disappear at any moment. “Millenniumon?”
“We suspect it might be another of his puppets, yes,” Tenraimon said quietly as she clasped her hands together around her adoptive daughter. “The Chosen of Courage and Friendship, with the help of others, managed to delete the culprit, Diablomon, but we fear the threat isn’t over.”
“Ryo and Wormmon are currently trapped, in a place you know as Turkey,” Narakumon finally murmured, his voice quiet. “He is unable to gate in, which prevented him from assisting.” He paused, lifting his head slightly. “We need you to break the seal so he may return home.”
“A seal?” Keiko repeated. “Is it made of Darkness? Is that why Ryo can’t break it himself?”
“Actually, it’s made from Miracles,” Tenraimon said. “It would seem Millenniumon is learning how to use Ryo’s own crest against him…”
“What?” Keiko stared at Tenraimon in confusion before she turned to Narakumon, which was a touch difficult due to how her adoptive parents held her so close. “Papa, why didn’t you just tell me yourself? You don’t need a computer to talk to me any time.”
Narakumon responded by tightening his grip around Keiko, wordlessly.
Tenraimon sighed and slid her hand up to gently stroke Narakumon’s cheek. “He tried. Just as I tried to speak to my Chosen Child, Hikari. It would seem that… Millenniumon has learned how to use Ryo’s crest against us as well.”
Nyamon’s eyes went wide as her ears canted back. “What!? But Miracles is weak to Darkness!”
“But Miracles also holds domain over the Digital World,” Tenraimon said, quietly. “Just as I hold domain over the Light World and Narakumon over the Dark World.” At Keiko’s blank stare, Tenraimon’s expression grew strained. “He… disconnected our worlds, trapping us out of the Digital World, and thus the real world. Think of it like taking a server offline. Narakumon’s power cannot overwhelm his if he cannot reach him.”
Horror bled into Keiko’s expression as her eyes widened to their utmost. “He… he what?”
“Then… that means...!?” Nyamon struggled for words before she flew her gauntlets out in a wide sweeping gesture. “What do we do!? What can we do!?”
“You’re a Chosen Child,” Narakumon finally spoke, his voice rough. “You… can do anything. He can no more keep you out than I can.”
Keiko straightened up with a jolt of adrenaline, but Narakumon’s embrace still held her fast. “We have to hurry! Tell me how to break the seal! If you two are kept disconnected, then the Digital World…!”
Narakumon gave a sharp nod, his grip like a vice even as his arms trembled.
“Just… just give us one more moment like this, Keiko,” Tenraimon said softly as she pulled closer to Narakumon and Keiko. “Please forgive us for being selfish for just one moment more. We were so close to losing you…”
Keiko hesitated at those words and squeezed her adoptive parents tighter. She wasn’t used to seeing the fear in their eyes; it was unsettling. However, she knew too that they were only afraid because they loved her so much. “Okay, Mama, Papa. I love you.”
“We love you too,” Tenraimon said softly before kissing the crown of Keiko’s head.
A quiet huff escaped Keiko in spite of the loving moment, as she couldn’t stop feeling uneasy about the whole situation. “We’re not going to let this happen to either of you again. I promise. We’re going to train twice as hard after this is all over.”
Nyamon watched the exchange, her expression softening for just a moment before it became hard again and she glared at the ceiling, her ears canted back. “We need to deal with Millenniumon - permanently. This proves that nothing is safe.”
Keiko nodded her agreement. “The fact that he can apparently affect the human world and even manipulate our crests… it’s clear now that he is an enemy that can’t be allowed to live.”
Narakumon grimaced. He glanced up to meet Tenraimon’s gaze, who returned it with a somber expression of dread. Closing his eyes, he lowered his head, and finally forced himself to speak in the low somber tones one would deliver a death sentence. “So it would seem.”
Tenraimon similarly closed her eyes as she bowed her head and took one of Narakumon’s hands in hers as they continued to embrace the daughter they came so dangerously close to losing forever. “For the sake of both worlds.”
---
A nuke. A nuke was dropped on Tokyo.
Osamu couldn’t believe it, but the media was blowing up with the news, speculating and trying to figure out who was responsible. Talking heads wondered if this worldwide hack of the internet was done by a super cyber terrorist group, but he knew the truth with total horrifying clarity.
The fact that Ken had disappeared during the crisis only made the situation that much worse.
Unknown to Osamu, Ken was on his way home, though he was taking his dear time getting there. His head was full of the day’s activities, and he didn’t look forward to the explosion that he fully expected to be waiting for him when he got home. After all, there was always an explosion waiting for him. It was one of the many reasons he decided to gate back with Ryo before making his way home by foot - it allowed him to drop Wormmon off and then delay the inevitable as long as possible.
“They’re probably upset that I took off,” Ken muttered as he slowly walked along the darkened street, his head bowed. And it was true - while his mother was busy gawking with the neighbors at the place the nuke fell, Ken ran to the nearest electronics store and gated out, leaving the groceries all over the ground. There was no way he was going to stand idly by when something so serious happened.
Even if Osamu didn’t think much of him, everyone else said they needed him. And even if he didn’t feel useful himself, he wasn’t going to let them down.
“I can’t believe he’s back. Again,” Ken sighed heavily. While they couldn’t prove it yet, the odds of it being anyone else but Millenniumon were incredibly low. The fact that the culprit was able to interfere with the real world showed just how serious a threat Millenniummon was. It was hard to tell if that was more or less horrifying than the disruption to their means of communication, especially Keiko’s to Narakumon. It was the perfect storm and, if not for the other Chosen Children who managed to defeat Millenniumon’s latest puppet, they would all be dead.
That knowledge made Ken’s stomach churn with fear. Even though the threat had passed, it did little to soften the impact of that revelation.
“Thank goodness Omegamon was able to stop him,” Ken said with a sigh before he looked up at the sky. “Omegamon…”
Ken had to admit, he wished he could have seen the fight. The name itself told him nothing of what kind of Digimon defeated Diablomon, but the creation of Omegamon was what was truly inspiring. Jogress - the ability to merge four hearts together and give birth to a Digimon forged of their bond. Such a being must have been truly incredible. “I wish… I was that strong...”
Ken gave a quick shake of his head, dispelling the negative thought. “We need to stop him!” he said as he reached up to press his hand against his chest. His pulse was still quicker than it should’ve been, as he simply couldn’t calm down. The danger they were in that day came so quick, so unexpected, and it was only a miracle that it didn’t end in utter tragedy. “And we need a way to communicate that he can’t block. There’s got to be something we can do…”
Ideas churned inside Ken’s head, theories quickly discarded and unknown variables lingering as questions he needed to answer before he could go further on that train of thought. The frustrating cycle only came to an abrupt halt when he found himself staring at the nameplate outside the door to his apartment. He hesitated, hand hovering near the doorknob with a grimace twisting his face.
Ken really didn’t want to go home.
It took longer than he liked to gather his nerve before he could finally open the front door. The air felt tense around him, suffocating, and leaving Ken feeling as though he had just stepped into a minefield instead of into the entryway of his home. Even before he got his shoes off, he could hear his mother sobbing from deeper within the apartment. The sound twisted his heart, but he couldn’t shake the cynical thought that going to her side would only result in another round of scolding and yelling.
With a defeated sigh, Ken went to find his mother, as prepared as he could be to face his family.
The rapid sound of footsteps startled Ken, and he barely made it past the kitchen before he came face to face with Osamu, who skidded to a halt before him. The two brothers stared at each other as if frozen, eyes wide. It seemed like forever until one of them moved and Ken was stunned to find that it was Osamu who pulled him into a hug.
“Nukes,” Osamu whispered in a trembling voice. “Digimon have access to nukes!”
Ken blinked repeatedly before he furrowed his brow. “U-um… apparently, yes? If they hack the government...”
Osamu jerked back and Ken was shocked to see his eyes were surprisingly moist. “How can you be so calm about this!? A nuclear bomb almost went off because of them!”
Ken was more than a little disoriented as he found himself compelled to reassure the brother that he had been prepared to argue with not even minutes prior. “I’m not… it’s just something we have to deal with, that’s all.”
“Why!?” Osamu sputtered, bordering on hysterical. “You’re eight! Don’t you see how insane that is sending kids after nukes!? You and everyone else would be dead right now if it went off!”
“We… didn’t know he could do this,” Ken said, his voice quiet. “He’s not supposed to be able to do this.”
“God…” Osamu breathed, rubbing his face to ease some of the tension there, though he kept one arm around Ken. He had to pause to readjust his displaced glasses before resuming the conversation. “What the hell are we supposed to do?”
“Nothing,” Ken said, more to himself than Osamu. “You aren’t supposed to do anything.”
“Nothing,” Osamu repeated, the word an empty echo as he stared at Ken dumbly. “Nothing?” Fear was swift to fill the void of emotion. “You mean all we can do is just sit around and wait for these monsters to bomb us again and see if it actually detonates next time!?”
Ken struggled with how to respond to Osamu, churning the words over and over in his head. He knew his brother wouldn’t be satisfied with his answer, no matter how it was phrased, but it was an unfortunate truth that Osamu needed to hear. “Yes. That’s all you can do. That’s why there are Chosen Children - like the ones who stopped the nuke.”
One look at Osamu’s face was all it took to tell Ken that he had said the wrong thing.
“You ran off to take on a nuke?” Osamu said, the question shaped more like a spear with a jagged tip as it launched at Ken.
Ken blinked. “The nuke was already taken care of.”
“That’s where you were,” Osamu said, growing a tinge more hysterical with each word that tumbled from his mouth. “You ran off to see if you could fight a nuke because of this ‘chosen one’ bullshit!”
Ken’s cheek twitched slightly as his jaw clenched. “Osamu. I was with Mom by the bay when the nuke fell. I watched the nuke actually land in the water! I would have been the first to die! With or without Wormmon!”
Those were the words that hit home. Instantly, Osamu deflated, anger drowning under a tidal wave of fear, and once more Ken found himself caught in his fiercely protective embrace. Tremors ran through his body from the knowledge that if the warhead had been active on the nuke that was dropped on Tokyo, he might have lived long enough to learn how Ken had been instantly vaporized in the explosion.
Unbidden, knowledge came rushing to the forefront of Osamu’s mind - of World War 2, of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, of nuclear radiation and its effects on the human body. All too vividly he recalled photographs of nuclear shadows and bodies that barely qualified as human after radiation ravaged them. All too helpfully, the genius’ brain gave him a vivid picture of what he and his family had nearly experienced, what had been so narrowly avoided. All his studies came back to bite him, taunt him with the knowledge he had learned.
Osamu wanted to throw up.
Ken watched the turmoil in his brother’s face and his heart panged in sympathy, as it was something he himself was trying desperately not to think about. Instead, he reached up to awkwardly rub his brother’s back in what he hoped was reassurance. The fact that he was reassuring the very person he was still fighting with only added to the awkwardness.
“There you are!” Haruto bellowed, startling the two boys as he stomped towards them. “Ken! Do you have any idea how worried you made us? Your mother has been crying ever since you disappeared on her! And you’ve been scaring Osamu to death!”
Ken jumped at the sudden appearance of his father and stared over Osamu’s shoulder, wordlessly. There really wasn’t anything he could respond with, after all.
Haruto glared down at Ken. “You better not have run off to play with those monsters again! I swear, if they had anything to do with this…”
Ken said nothing once again. He didn’t want to lie and he preferred to not to say anything at all if he had an option for it.
Unfortunately, Haruto didn’t take the silence well, his anger growing by the second. “Where were you?! Answer me!”
Ken hesitated before he went for the safest truth. “I went to check on Ryo.”
“You what?” Haruto sputtered. “You ran off to play with your friends and didn’t say a word to your mother first?! Do you know how hysterical she’s been since you disappeared! It’s only because of Osamu that we haven’t called the police to look for you by now!”
Ken wanted to correct his father about ‘playing’ with Ryo, but knew no good would come from it. Instead, he kept his mouth shut and hoped his father would drop the matter after enough scolding.
Haruto’s lip curled up at the corner, and he pointed down the hall with a quaking finger. “You march your butt right in there and beg your mother for forgiveness for being such an ungrateful son! Then you go to your room and say goodbye to your friends! You’re grounded!”
Ken felt a flare of anger flicker inside of him, a flame that threatened to burn through him and unleash hell upon his stubborn kin, but he did his best to suppress it. If apologizing to his mother was all it took to make peace between them, he’d do that for the sake of getting the matter over with. He didn’t care about being grounded or his father’s ultimatum, as he knew neither would ever pay attention to him long enough to enforce it. After all, it was the same thing they had said after the fight over Wormmon, too.
Rather than cause strife, Ken pulled away from his brother to do as he had been told, only to be startled as Osamu resisted and reaffirmed the hold on him. Surprised, he turned a questioning gaze back to his brother. “Osamu?”
“You…” Osamu’s voice shook, muffled against Ken’s shoulder. He paused only to strengthen it and speak just loud enough for their father to hear him. “Ken almost died today.”
Haruto went silent. After a long moment, his hand fell to his side, and he let out a huff of air, deflating like a balloon. “Just go apologize to your mother for running off, Ken,” he eventually said, still gruff but with far less bite to his tone. “She’s been worried sick about you disappearing like that and won’t calm down until she sees you’re okay.”
Ken was taken aback by the sudden change, but relieved all the same, before he gave a small nod.
It took a little time and patience, but eventually he managed to coax Osamu into letting him go. However, as he made his way to the living room, his brother wasn’t far behind. For the rest of the night, Osamu was his shadow, scarcely saying a word until long after an exceedingly awkward dinner when the two of them retired to their room.
“Ken?” Osamu said, startling Ken as the younger boy into pausing with a foot on the first rung of the ladder to their bunk bed. “Do you mind if we stay up a little longer?” He hesitated a moment. “We could play that game I gave you if you want. I’ll even be player two.”
Ken blinked at that before he nodded, taken aback by such an offer. He couldn’t remember the last time Osamu acquiesced the first player position. “Okay, Osamu. I don’t mind. I… really don’t feel like sleeping right now, either.”
For the first time that day, Osamu finally smiled, though it was shadowed by eyes still haunted by the fears of what might had been. He doubted that he could ever sleep well again - not as long as they lived in a world where monsters had free reign to kill whoever and whenever they pleased.

Never dirtying her own hands...
Ok, they're talking about the mind swap ep, and...Ok, looking atthis, and the last episode revealing anthy's uh...whatever the fuck that is. I'm now a bit more certain of my previous read of it being less a real thing and more like a personality swap rather than a full mind swap.
Also starting to wonder about chuchu. He acting on her orders or something.
Oh, they're just acknowledging the weird shit.
Jesus Mitsuru. You just...What the hell?
...No matter how she tries to hurt people she get's hurt the worst? Which...Sounds like a goof, but that's factually what happens. Shit gets visited back on her like 8 times as worse.
Wait, are Nanami and Utena and Anthy the Shadow Girls this time?
Ok, I can 100% believe they just never looked under the table. That...Feels frighteningly in character actually.
Gotta say, Mitsuru has surprisingly become an interesting character so...
...Was...his plan to replace her brother...? Uh. Wait. And mess with her mind too?  Wait. Wait. Wait a fucking second what the fuck.
Oh the cow thing DEFFO happened. They're just not thinking about it. Or referencing it. What the...
Why are they all referring to ONLY the nanami eps? Like damn, the attention paid here is uh. FEELS MAD WEIRD considering how on point everything else happened here so. Like just an ep ago, we were dealing with a man's mental break down and also him unexisting because Utena beat him so bad.
Home boy turns into a cow too. ….and accidentally flashes his dick which causes nanami to freak out and fly out the window.
Was it just a dream? Maybe?
Shadow Girls...? Again?
Monkey and Robots again...? Uh...I feel that means something.

For the Kalafina Song Meme ♫ Hoshi no Utai / 星の謡 ♫
♫ What was your first impression of it? …okay, I have a confession to make: I literally just heard this song for the first time last night. So I get to lump in my expectations along with my first impressions here. yaay… (please forgive me >.
Anyways, long before I heard this song, I listened to Yami no Uta and I thought, “Whoa, this is super cool and dark! I wonder what Hoshi no Utai is like?” For Hoshi no Utai, I expected something like a sequel to Yami no Uta, except slower and a bit more hopeful (in my mind, it was like Gloria and Kugatsu had a child and Yami no Uta was the godmother… weird, I know xD -i realize that kugatsu came out after hoshi no utai, and i do not care-) When I first listened to Hoshi no Utai though, my expectations were completely blown out of the water (maybe minus the Yami no Uta sequel part). I was a bit disappointed, but when the song ended, I realized “…hey, I actually like this song. It’s pretty good!”
♫ How do you feel about it now? Apparently, a lot changes in a day, because this is now one of my favorite album exclusive Kalafina songs alongside Yami no Uta, Gogatsu no Mahou, and Mata Kaze ga Tsuyoku Natta. It’s a really good song and I love it so much!
♫ Rate the song on a scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the best rate)! 8
♫ Describe the song in one sentence! Flute-ness and percussion madness literally about stars xD
♫ How does it make you feel? It makes me feel like I should get the courage to go out, explore whatever, have adventures, and not worry about the consequences. If I had to put it in a single word, I guess I would say empowered?
♫ What do you like most about this song? I can’t decide between the opening with the flute and the parts of the verses with the harmonies where Wakana first comes in
♫ What’s your least favourite part about it? Definitely Hikaru’s solo lines that are a bit before the song ends, where she’s like trailing down the notes, it just sounds really weird to me.
♫ Best version of the song? Seeing as I haven’t heard any live versions yet because no one seems to have them that I’ve been able to find, it would have to be the studio version.
♫ Favourite lines in the lyrics? yume no daichi ni tatte / Standing in the land of dreamskimi no hitomi ni atte / meeting your eyesbokura wa nani wo ubai / what are we stealing?nani wo sagashi ni yuku n darou / what are we searching for? (thanks canta-per-me for translation for this bit -and the rest of the song and all the other songs while we’re at it-)
♫ Thoughts on the musical arrangement and the use of instruments? I think the flute combined with all the percussion makes a nice contrast of sorts, so I like it.
♫ Wakana, Keiko or Hikaru? Whose vocals are most impressive in this song? mmmm this is a really hard pick between Hikaru and Keiko, but I’d have to go with Keiko because her harmonies make this song a million times better.
♫ Share something creative related to this song (picture, gif, video, artwork, poem, anecdote, headcanon, interpretation etc…knock yourself out!) If this song had a music video, I think it’d be similar to sprinter and to the beginning combined, with to the beginning’s outdoor shots being used for the chorus, parts of verses, and that part that Hikaru sings at the end that I don’t really like, and sprinter’s solo member shots being used for, well, the solo member shots, the beginning of the song, parts of verses, and any part in need of random object focus (like at the beginning of Marchen, except in random parts here). For cosumes, maybe a combination of their red outfits from the Red Moon album cover and Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa’s costumes, I don’t know. Something like that. xD

Consideration
Title: Isn’t it Love?
Chapter 5: Consideration
Relationship: Hiei/Kurama | Minamino Shuuichi
Character(s): Hiei (YuYu Hakusho), Kurama | Minamino Shuuichi
Additional Tags: Feelings Realization, Team as Family, Post-Canon, Fluff, 5+1 Things
Summary: On a mission to the Ningenkai, Yukina and Hiei reach an understanding while Yuusuke gives a clue to something that Hiei's been avoiding for awhile.
It is only through the grace of Yukina’s presence that the former spirit detective was permitted to live another day. After returning to the Ningenkai, the peaceful lull of afternoon settled over the city, Hiei clad himself in human clothing to walk the streets towards Yuusuke’s shop with full intentions to put the Mazoku in the ground once and for all. What he hadn’t accounted for was his sister visiting Keiko for a bowl of ramen and conversation with the couple.
“It’s been a while, Hiei,” Keiko said as he shut the sliding door behind him. “How’s Kurama?”
“He’s fine,” Hiei replied without thinking, taking a seat beside his sister who gave him a smile, tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear.
The thought belatedly crossing his mind on why she asked that particular question. He narrowed his eyes questioningly at Keiko who gave him a friendly wave then turned around to a snickering Yuusuke who had his back to the bar, cleaning something , although Hiei was certain he was just trying not to laugh in his face. And while he wanted to stay angry, being in such close proximity to Yukina make it difficult. Occasionally as if gauging his mood, her gaze would drift to him as she slurped away at her noodles. On the umpteenth time that her hair nearly fell, he reached over to lay a hand on her shoulder.
“Is something wrong, brother?” Yukina asked, the title making his heart flutter and he huffed. Pointing to the messy pony-tail, she nodded in understanding and reached back to undo it. Gently, he nudged her hands away.
“I’ll do it,” he assured, rising from his chair and slipping to stand behind her.
There was a faint pink tinge to her skin as he undid her ponytail, and it rose to her face, barely visible on her cheeks from where he stood. Running his fingers through her before gathering it up, he deftly twisted the hair ribbon around it and secured it in a bow just as she wore it. Once he was sure that it was fixed, he laid his hand on the back of her chair and peered around to her face. Her cheeks were nearly as red as their eyes but her smile was bright.
“Something happen?” He asked, tilting his head. Only when he spoke did she return from her reverie and give him a smile, her eyes practically sparkling.
“Nothing, I’m grateful, brother,” Yukina says, and Hiei is certain that she’s glowing.
So bright that he has to look away, climbing into his chair again and resting his elbow on the bar as he averted his gaze, chin resting in his hand. “Good,” he grumbled, ignoring the floating feeling in his chest at her words.
Yuusuke fiddled around with a few more of the dishes. The clinking distracting Hiei from his sister’s occasional glances and presence until a glass of water was set in front of him.
“So, you come here often, shortie?” Yuusuke asked with a shit-eating grin from ear to ear, unwithering even with one of Hiei’s best glares.
“You were the one that gave Mukuro a cellphone, weren’t you?” Hiei accused, his eyes narrowing when the spirit detective dared to laugh .
“What gave it away?”
Hiei snorted, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms, the heat wafting from him causing the water in the glass to warm from the steam forming on the edges.
“The contact names that you put for everyone ,” Hiei stressed, counting the reasons off on his fingers.”The pictures that could have only been taken by people that were nearby, and the lack of anyone else having such liberal access to her.”
Yuusuke whistles low and raps his knuckles against the bar. “Damn, are you sure that you shouldn’t have been a spirit detective?”
A scathing remark sat on his tongue but he reined it in when a chance look out the corner of his eye landed him eye to eye with his sister. Her forehead creased with worry, lips pressed together and eyes wide as she regarded him. The sinking in his stomach only served to acclimate his annoyance with Yuusuke but he knew better than to act like this in front of Yukina. Startling her was the last thing he wanted. Easing the heat waves pouring off of him, he smiled faintly.
“I’m sorry, sister, there was an issue with something the detective gave to Mukuro and I merely wanted to get to the bottom of it,” he explained, laying a hand atop her head. “There’s nothing to be concerned over.”
Yukina gave him a look then smiled in return, accepting the head pat with a slight nod before returning to her food. Hiei resisted the urge to sigh. He knew that she wasn’t easy to fool and definitely wasn’t a child, but it didn’t make lying to her easy. Skirting around the truth was just as hard to his dismay. And obviously Yuusuke’s amusement if his grin was anything to account for.
Hiei grimaced, jutting a thumb towards the doorway and the former detective got the message, stepping away from the bar and calling to Keiko that he would be stepping out for a bit.
“Brother,” Yukina called once Hiei stepped away from his chair, the fire demon looking over his shoulder at her. “I know that you might be busy but would you mind walking home with me today?”
Hiei straightened up. He half expected that the oaf would be clamoring over himself to get here and have the chance to walk his sister home. The fact that he wasn’t only made HIei want to rescind his consideration of giving Kuwabara permission to court his sister. Turning to face her, hands tucked in his pockets, Hiei nodded. Such a simple gesture made her smile and the fluttering feeling in his chest returned.
He resisted the urge to curl his fingers in his shirt and twist, instead turning his back and trying to rid himself of this giddiness as he headed to the door. Yuusuke waiting for him outside, the two slipped into the alleyway near the shop where Hiei was free to grab the Mazoku by his shirt and tug him down to eye level.
“Why did you do it?”
The mazoku grinned. “Why did I do what?”
Obviously, he was getting some sort of joy out of this and Hiei would not let him have the satisfaction of hearing him say it. Reaching into the pocket of his jeans for the offending object, the screen comes to life and switching to his contacts, the one in particular, found almost immediately. He’d recognize that face anywhere after all.
The phone’s screen shoved in Yuusuke’s face making him go cross-eyed as he tried to read what was on the screen. Leaning his head back enough to look at it better, he bit down on his bottom lip harshly to stifle a laugh. Though it wasn’t enough and his shoulders shook, laughter echoing off the walls of the alley. Hiei glowered and tried to stifle the growl clawing up his throat.
“You’re mad that I put Kurama in your phone as your ‘hubby’?”
Hearing the word out loud was even more mortifiying than reading it on the screen. Hiei recoiled as if burned and snatched his hand away from the detective, running it over his clothes as if he touched something foul.
“Kurama is not my…” he visibly cringed at the word and shoved the phone in his pocket. “He is my partner , not that disgusting euphemism you used.”
Yuusuke rolled his eyes, folding his arms across his chest. “Partner is the same as hubby , dumbass. And two, Keiko calls me ‘hubby’ so watch it.”
“I know what I said,” Hiei said flatly, rolling his eyes. “Why did you even give her a phone? There are other ways to contact one another that are quicker or you could just see her.”
Yuusuke gives him a look and Hiei knows that particular look. It’s the look of how long can he drag this out before the fire demon starts threatening bodily harm. A game that he and at times, unknowingly, Kuwabara tend to play. Deciding that it may be better to tell the fire demon what he wanted to know, Yuusuke shrugged.
“Group chats.”
“Group chats,” Hiei repeated, staring at Yuusuke as if he had grown two heads. “Why.”
“Pictures.”
These few-worded statements weren’t getting them anywhere and he was almost certain that he was going to kill him. Rules against violence and disturbances in the Ningenkai be damned, the detective was pushing his buttons.
“Listen Hiei, we could always use those other methods to send stuff to each other and all, but it makes planning so much easier. And a lot harder to avoid ,” Yuusuke stressed, giving him a look that made Hiei huff and fold his arms, looking away. “C’mon, is it really that bad that I wanted us all to be connected like a family should be?”
Hiei’s mind came to a screeching halt. “What did you say?”
Yuusuke tilted his head, now looking at him as if he had grown two heads. “We could always us—”
“No, not that,” Hiei interjected. “The last part. Connection.”
Yuusuke nodded slowly. “Yeah, I mean, why do you think we’re all on a family plan? I even got Kurama to switch over —”
“Wait, Kurama knows about this?”
Yuusuke sighed and rubbed at his temples. “Hiei, you’re practically married to the guy, how do you not know about thi— wait, where did you get your phone from?”
“Mukuro.”
“That damn fox,” Yuusuke huffed a laugh and shook his head. “I thought that Kurama would’ve given it to you and explained everything but he must’ve left it with Mukuro the last time he went over there.”
Wrapping his head around all of this was difficult . A dawning realization making Hiei’s blood run cold.
“The name…”
“Huh?”
“Did Kurama see the name?”
Yuusuke opened his mouth, then closed it, looking from left to right as if he was afraid the fox would materialize out of thin air.
Hiei growled, seconds away from throttling him, “ Yuusuke .”
The detective held up his hands. “Okay, yeah. Yeah, he saw it.”
Hiei feels as if his soul left his body. Kurama saw that innane nickname. What did he even think of it? What did he want him to think of it? His heart was simultaneously sinking and beating faster, and he leant against the alley wall, focusing on the tongue of his sneakers.
“I’m not married to him,” he muttered numbly, running his fingers through his hair. “We’re—”
Yuusuke’s hand appeared in his line of sight, setting on his shoulder and slowly, he raised his head to look at the spirit detective. The teasing and grinning face he wore was gone, replaced with a look that spoke nothing but concern and openness. His dark eyes were warm and imploring, Hiei reflected in their depths and while he often hated being looked down on or boxed in, the gesture was comforting . He might have to rescind his thought to put the Mazoku under and send his soul to the Reikai.
“You’re partners,” Yuusuke points out, shrugging. “And you do everything together, right?”
More or less.
He ate most of his meals at Kurama’s, slept there even on the nights when he could’ve stayed in Mukuro’s territory, they went out together more often than not, and attended functions with the entire group as a pair. They even slept in the same bed and slept with eachother , and the kiss that Kurama gives him before he leaves, the way he holds him. Wants him to tell him to come home safely.
Home .
“Hiei, hey,” Yuusuke calls, snapping his fingers in front of the fire demon’s face.
Hiei shoved his hand away and pushed away from the wall, Yuusuke taking a step back to give him room. Wanting to pace back and forth to clear his mind, run from here to the boundary that led to the Makai and then back, but unable to do anything but stand rooted at the spot. His hands tucked in his pockets, eyes searching the cracks in the pavement and the dirt beneath the soles of his shoes for answers.
“What did he say?”
Yuusuke tilted his head. “About the name?”
Hiei’s silence is an answer but Yuusuke’s silence is damning. FInally, the spirit detective’s presence is felt by his side and his arm comes to rest around his shoulders.
“No idea, he was with Yukina when he did the final check-up to make sure it was ‘something you would agree with’,” Yuusuke said, air quoting with his fingers, a smile on his lips as he glanced down at Hiei. “He really knows you well, huh?”
Too well. He could only imagine how he would’ve taken this if Kurama had given it to him head on. Mukuro might have been a way to soften the blow. To avert his attention, to bring him to a conclusion about something else. He wasn’t sure what part of the fox’s plan that his embarrassment played a role in but here he was.
“Hey, Hiei. Can I ask you something?”
“Didn’t you already?”
He could practically hear Yuusuke’s eyes rolling around in their sockets, and the light tap to his shoulder brings his attention to the mazoku who looks down at him with this unreadable expression. There’s fondness somewhere in his eyes but other things as well. He’d seen it a few times: in Maze Castle after he decided to spare their lives from the falling ceiling, in the Dark Tournament when he returned from his bout with the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, and shortly after Yuusuke’s resurrection.
“Spit it out already.”
Yuusuke smiled. “Do you see us as family?”
“What?”
Yuusuke shrugged as if what he was asking so casually was easy for him to reply to. “Do you see us as family? All of us, even Kuwabara. I know you put up a tough act, but deep down, you’re a big softie. I’m not gonna tell anybody, so lemme know. To you, are we your family?”
Family.
The only family that he’d ever registered was Yukina and even that was tentative. When he resolved never to tell her, it was out of wanting to protect her, true. But also fear that he’d be rejected by the one person that he knew was of his blood. No, something about that didn’t seem right. He didn’t want to be rejected by her for another reason —
Something that gnawed at him, twisted at his insides, made it difficult to breathe but the thought of her smile eased the tension. His thoughts wandering to Mukuro, her words from before, the look in her eyes — that unreadable expression. Why hadn’t he changed the contact name in his phone from ‘Mom’ to her name?
What did that mean ?
He found alongside them because it was in his best interests, yes, but that didn’t feel like the whole truth. There was something else lurking beneath the surface. Something that he’d been turning away from, ignoring, bellying in hopes to keep this . Yet here was Yuusuke, looking at him with those eyes and asking him — offering him this .
“Why does it matter to you?”
Yuusuke shrugged. “My mom had me when she was younger, and we didn’t really talk to a lot of my family, then I got you guys and I just thought ‘hey’, what else do I need I guess.”
Slipping his arm from around Hiei’s shoulders, he walks out of the alleyway with his hands tucked in his pockets, sparing a glance over his shoulder before he disappears around the corner.
“And by the way, I think we’ve known each other long enough that I can get what you’re trying to say even when you don’t say it.”
Hiei highly doubted that but the knowing look in Yuusuke’s eyes said something else.
“If I had to pick a brother, I’d choose you without a doubt,” he says.
Hiei’s left speechless as he turns the corner and leaves. The gentle chime of the front door telling him that the mazoku went back into the shop. Leaving him not only to his turmoil but to sort out this warmth in his chest.
Brother .
He leans against the wall of the shop, waiting in the alleyway as he tries to sort out his thoughts when the feeling of a cool breeze brings his attention to the Ice Maiden standing a few inches away from him. The afternoon sun’s glow illuminates Yukina’s being in a golden halo and Hiei almost looks away but he forces himself to meet her gaze. She tilts her head and turns on her heel with a smile, quietly beckoning him to follow and follow he does. They fall into step, walking on the fairly empty streets, their shadows overlapping as they go.
It’s quiet just as Hiei likes it. A silence that he’s grown accustomed to with his sister. Despite the decades of history between them with looking and seeking one another out, the mountain of lies they’d been told and convinced themselves of, they could still have this. Even if their relationship would never be perfect — this was more than Hiei could have ever dreamt of.
“I heard that you got your phone,” Yukina says, her gaze sweeping over him. “Did you happen to look at the different names?”
Hiei nodded and glanced towards her. “I changed yours from Yukina to ‘Sister’.”
The surprise shows on her face and she tries to hide her smile by averting her gaze. Hiei smiles faintly. That look suited her and he found that he preferred it to the others that she wore. For a moment, they walk in silence, crossing a bridge overlooking a river that flowed through town. Yukina’s pace slowed and Hiei stopped, looking back over his shoulder. She stood close to the bridge’s railing, her hands resting upon it as she stared out at the honey gold sky. The setting sun shimmering on the horizon amidst the buildings.
Bathed in the orange-gold, she looked much younger than Hiei knew they both were. He turned on his heel to walk to her side and leant forward, resting his arms on the railing and looking into the horizon.
“...Did you know the name that was input for Kurama?”
Yukina nodded slowly. “I thought it was fitting, do you not?”
“I don’t know,” Hiei admitted, a stray gust of wind ruffling his hair and for a moment, all he saw was darkness when his eyes slipped shut to focus on the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the wind on his skin. “Today has been… questionable.”
“How so?”
Hiei shrugged. “I have been noticing odd things about myself, about my heart , the world around me. It feels as if everyone else knows something that I should know and they’re hinting to it like some long-held secret.”
Yukina hummed softly in reply and it took Hiei a moment to realize how similar they were. From their mannerisms to their slight quirks when in conversation. It was jarring when he tried to remember that Yukina, despite being almost the polar opposite of him, was his sister in every way.
“We’ve known each other for a long time, brother, everyone knows that rushing you into something isn’t right. So they try to ease you into it, into this ,” she explained gently, and Hiei opened his eyes to look at her.
“ This ?”
Yukina shrugged with a slight smile, looking toward him. “Family.”
There it was. That word again. The fluttering feeling returned and he braced himself for it, looking away. It was easier to look down at the river waters and try to distract himself with the sounds. Yet, he could feel Yukina’s gaze on him, the weight of it reminding him just how alike they were.
“Did it ever cross your mind that I wanted to know?” Yukina asked. “That I wanted to know that you were my brother?”
Hiei’s head jerked upright and whipped around to look at her. She stood with a hand clasped tightly to her chest, facing away from the sunset.
“I understand that you may have had your reasons, I worried about what my brother would think of me when he’d lived a life so hard compared to mine —”
Opening his mouth to refute that, Yukina’s steadfast gaze silenced him.
“And then I met you. You told me that suffering can’t be compared, that I should do for myself, and the evidence kept piling up but I was just waiting for you to say something. You didn't, so I took the advice — the advice that could only come from a brother .”
Hiei swallowed thickly, a lump in his throat as he felt the acclimation of this .
“So did it ever cross your mind, brother? That I might love you despite what you’ve done?”
His eyes widened and the world seemed to tunnel around the edges to where all he could see was her. One hand lingering on the railing while the other hung uselessly at his side.
“Where… where is this coming from?”
“I just felt that it needed to be said instead of waiting around.”
“I thought… I was doing what was best for you so that you would be happy,” Hiei muttered, but the words that he’d once clung to now felt like a useless and flimsy excuse.
Yukina’s eyes softened and she laid her hand on top of his own. Hiei willing his muscles not to tense beneath her hold, his gaze drifting from their hands to her face.
“I would rather be happy with you,” she says, tilting her head with a soft smile. “Because I love you, brother. We all do.”
All.
Their faces appeared in his mind one by one, each distinct from the last, with memories and words that he could attach to each of them. The last being that of a patient man with red hair and green eyes, beneath which lied silver and gold, and that man —
Hiei’s mouth fell open and he felt his heart skip a beat. Slipping his hand from beneath Yukina’s, he stepped forward and pulled her in close to him with a hug. His arms wrapped around her and his head resting on her shoulder, squeezing her as he held her close. She stiffened in his arms for a second then practically melted, resting her hand on his back then smoothing her hands across until she was returning the hug in full.
“Thank you…” Hiei muttered, giving her another squeeze before he pulled back. “..sister.”
A light curved through her eyes and she smiled brightly.
“...You’re welcome, brother.”
The rest of the walk to the Kuwabara household is done in relative quiet but the air shifted between them. Yukina’s hand in his own, their fingers interlaced as they walked, standing close enough that their shoulders are almost melded into one. She looks around the neighborhood, pointing things out to him and he listens to the stories that she has to tell. Once they arrive at the gate, she gives him one last hug and he returns it fiercely. Nearly lifting her off the ground before he lets her go and waits until she’s safely inside to leave.
Pulling his phone from his pocket, he sighed and opened it to the contacts.
He had a call to make.

Full thoughts on Magic Kaito chapter 34.
Page 1: Nice to hear the police have the air on lockdown, though that hasn’t been the issue at most of KID’s heists in MK.
The description of the jewel is pretty much meant to hammer in the ‘hey, this is supposed to glow in light, possibly Pandora’ even though it’s really unnecessary. The Red Tear was the last gem to actually be heavily hinted with a ‘maybe’ by name before immediately being dismissed.
Side text is the part showing that this might not all be just a troll move on Gosho’s part of have suspicion. Why point out that Aoko still doesn’t know Kaito’s identity otherwise?
Page 2: Really, we still need panty shots? Geez... I thought we’d moved away from perv Kaito, though I also can’t be too mad because that gives me hope that MK will go back to being more silly. Not that the rest of the chapter shows any more of that, and it’s still mainly heist focused after the first few pages, but I can dream.
Don’t know if Gosho is hinting that he’s adopted the anime adaptation to have Kaito and Aoko live next to each other. Technically they just walk to school together (new information in itself, I think, since we’ve seen Kaito go home on his own more than once in the series, and first chapter he arrived on his own), and there’s still no information on where they live in relation to each other.
Page 3: Aoko knew Kaito had a bike, Keiko didn’t. Because he apparently didn’t have his license for too long before his bike was pretty much totaled. (Kid heist is hinted as the cause, and I’m assuming how that’s supposed to be taken... Though could also be imagining his future plans for the thing in the picture.)
Aoko jumps to Kaito suggesting she get a license as well, instead of him possibly suggesting they could ride together.
Page 4: I’m less amazed at the suggestion that he would take Aoko to the aquarium than the fact he’s doing the ‘I’m being magnanimous and therefore am Kaito-sama now’. It gives me flashbacks to Aoko finding out Kaito couldn’t skate and making him refer to her as Aoko-sama. Heck, that he’s offering at all, when his older personality would have been teasing ‘if you want me to take you anywhere, you’d have to beg~’ in terms of giving a favor.
Pretty sure Aoko realizes how nice Kaito is being, even if he’s trying (and failing) to sounds like his old self.
Akako proving that Kaito isn’t the only one who can use cards as weapons. -shot-
Page 5: I’m still sad that our resident witch is continuing to only really be used as a fortune teller. And always only seems to be like ‘might want to be careful, this isn’t going to go well for you’. Every time. I miss voodoo, demon possession, pentagrams and broomsticks Akako, not oracle of bad luck Akako. Pretty sure Kaito’s personal luck is always going to be bad, even if he’s ‘lucky’ in that he escapes his issues relatively unharmed. Very relatively.
Flirty Akako is also slightly odd to see. And I have mixed reactions about it because the teasing in on point, but it feels weird to see her play on Kaito’s perv joke.
Hakuba is here for literally three panels (so far) and then suddenly we’re yanked out of Kaito’s normal day school life that we barely get to see ever. I would have liked that to go on a bit longer, but okay Gosho, whatever, just please keep writing MK.
And Point One for hecking up: Kaito, why would you use your personal bike in both civilian and thief identities? That sort of not-thinking makes me want to smack you upside the head, because really? Bad enough you use the same exact, very distinct card gun...
Page 6: ‘Boring’ stuff skipped, heist time, looit, it’s a heist, yep. -shot again-
Kaito, you need some words about how to keep a secret identity. Also, in the time you’ve known her, since when has Akako been outright wrong on when you’d have trouble? You deserve it when you have that attitude.
Aoko still bringing her dad food because he’s too invested in work to leave. That’s never going to change. Must be nice when your dad is in charge of Kid heists, you can constantly ask for easy access to whatever the thing is as long as it’s not when/where Kid is supposed to be. And yes, talking about it as Aoko taking advantage, not Kaito taking advantage of Aoko’s connection.
Page 7: Ah yes, this has never been seen by the public before and is a big religious thing, but we’re definitely bringing it out just to attract a well known thief. No fear that he might actually just. Steal it. And no ominous words are spoken here, nope.
Kaito, honey. Should you really be pointing out the legitimacy of gems while you’re a civilian? No? Yeah, I know next to no effort is going to keeping his identity a secret this chapter, but it’s bugging me when he should be on his toes and usually is when Hakuba is involved. What happened to the careful planning of ‘I had two backup plans for how to escape, but I guess I don’t need them’, or the very fact that the last time Kaito was allowed to look at jewels, it was the opals with Nightmare involved and he clarly had no gem knowledge, as he was only there to look it over as a magician. Back when he could keep from looking too suspicious. Point Two for hecking up.
Page 8: No, seriously, more evidence that this is really going to be a reveal thing: Throw every normal part of the character out the window so it’s clear he’s not going to be able to hide it. Point Three for fricking throwing down the why it’s a fake and then immediately making an excuse to leave and pop up as Kid two minutes later, just in that window that ‘Kuroba Kaito’  isn’t there and five freaking hours earlier than intended. Jfc, Gosho.
Also would he really be trying to avoid dealing with Hakuba so much that he’ll just say ‘screw it’ and not even try? That’s what’s implied here. Sure, Hakuba could guess that the bike would be used when you fricking flaunt it in front of him, Kaito, but that’s your own fault.
Page 9: Not even going to harp on how stupid this is anymore, I’d be complaining about how the author is choosing to write all of this at this point. Which if I did complain, things like this are why this chapter feels rushed. It feels like he wanted to get to a certain point, bu had to hit all the other checkmarks of ‘show the other characters, good, now show the heist, okay, skip everything and get to the good parts that I actually want to do’. I like the good parts, but throwing everything else together makes it too fast paced and half this chapter feels unimportant. It’s setup, I get that, but it’s bad set-up.
Anyway...
Kaito his first heist: A phantom thief doesn’t lie. Kaito this heist: Yep, thieves are liars by nature, I lied, but moving on-
Still don’t like the just-as-transparent priest lady, I don’t know how she didn’t scream ‘up to something’ just as badly as Kaito’s screaming ‘I’m Kid and am making no attempt to give evidence otherwise’.
Page 10: Wonka voice: Oh no, it’s a trap, if only we could have seen that coming...
And here we have the fun parts. Kaito clearly can react fast enough to save himself, but Aoko is the plot device of this chapter and so, her being here is what drags him into actually falling into this trap. So much care, and even if I like the trouble he gets, I hope it works out well for him, too.
Interesting to note: Kaito hasn’t actually used his card gun as a grappling hook sort of device up until his more recent appearances, starting with Makoto in DC. And getting a more clear look at it now, it’s just as terribly impractical looking as most of Kaito’s other stunts. I approve.
Question though, did he disengage the wire from his gun there? As in, he’d still have his gun? I’m guessing that’s the case, there’s a sound effect and blank spot there to indicate it, and it’d be pretty bad if Kaito let go and left his gun hanging there for the police to have.
Page 11: Ow. I love Kaito for being so protective and shielding Aoko, but ow. I both love and hate when Kaito gets hurt. On the one hand: something happening. On the other: I do actually love Kaito and with hurt there needs to be help.
Ah, Aoko, the one person no one plans for. Please shake things up for people more often.
Page 12: He’s still keeping Aoko mostly off the broken glass, I love.
Though, this is all happening five hours before Kid’s announced time. Yes, there’s been a blackout, but these people still would have to be ready and raring to go as soon as it happened. ...How long were they going to be prepared for Kid capture?
Kaito trying to calmly assess the situation. Up until he gets hit with more ‘what the heck is going on here’ and dumped unceremoniously on the floor. (Which looks a lot worse when you know he’s already injured on that side, all I see is pain. ...And Aoko’s phone, which had fallen out of her hand when the floor dropped them into the truck.)
Page 13: I haven’t seen the DC dramas, but I’ve caught glimpses, and have bad feelings. Though at the same time, this stunt is being pulled after publicly running off with the thief (and innocent bystander) while the police were active, and would be hard to associate with pure criminal intentions. I don’t know what’s going on with this room and challenge to figure out the truth, but I also don’t think it’s going to play out as badly as could be jumped to.
That display is made of some strong stuff, to not be entirely shattered after falling twice.
Kaito, I like that you’re being careful with Aoko, but you should know full well you’ve been shielding her from hitting her head. You should know better than to assume she’s going to remain unconscious just from initial fainting shock of falling without warning.
Page 14: Cut badly, yet jacket is as immaculate  as ever. No hole, no blood, unless you move the jacket over and show your shirt.
I just noticed the tie pin, and was suddenly reminded that that thing used to fly every which way. Wonder when Gosho started making him use it.
Why are you prepared to deal with possible bleeding, but not taking any of the basic steps to make sure you wouldn’t actually be suspected? Oh wait, physical evidence is a bit more important than any easy conclusions... Fine, that can slide.
But don’t just sit and stare at the glass that poked a hole in your side while you’re contemplating, see to your injury. Or see to Aoko, since you have no real idea of why she’s unconscious. Again, deserve to be bit for that oversight. Priorities man.
Page 15: What was that about this going smoothly, Kaito? And now you’re trapped somewhere and forced to solve the puzzle, you have a bad injury, and your best friend just tore your precious shadow-making hat off your head and recognizes you. Don’t worry, Akako did say it wouldn’t go too badly, but you majorly hecked up and I hope Aoko does figure it all out.
Better yet, I hope she goes: Dang it, I was kinda hoping I was wrong about that. And more annoyed that it turned out to be true that Kid is Kaito than upset or shocked. Or if it does go the annoying route of lies and pretending to be Kid since it’s a fake, at least let her at the end secretly acting like she took it, but secretly like ‘that was bs, and I know it, but I’ll confront him some other time when he deserves to be afraid for his life’.
I have hopes, but also know better than to really expect things to happen. But I’m open to you trying to surprise us, Gosho. The fact this is even brought up out of nowhere is already surprising enough, it’ll be fun to see what happens.
(PS: Please let Aoko tell Kaito the monocle is stupid and does nothing.)
