why flan is a lesbian (and why it’s important)

when i first read tb8, i thought, “well, i think flan is a lesbian, but maybe that’s just projection,” and then i went online and saw that everyone else had come to the same conclusion. now i actually do think theres quite a bit of canon evidence pointing to her being gay. this post puts it really really well :)

spoilers below cut

for one thing can we talk about how differently flan talks about female characters from male characters in general? if you look at how she describes the photograph in the beginning it’s obvious. flantasha nation for life but how many times has flan gone on about jennifer rose milton being beautiful or v____ looking pretty? not even adam gets description to this extent.

also, transvioletbaudelaire made a really good point about flan’s reaction to this. it was a big tonal shift despite the paragraph having nothing to do with what was going on. flan was more affected by a few sentences about being gay than the rest of ron’s speech about adam being missing……

something i’ve recently noticed is that most of natasha’s idols are queer. marlene dietrich had the first on-screen kiss between two women ever, as well as being openly into women irl. bette davis and dorothy parker were historically popular within gay communities, and anais nin wrote about wlw sex in her diary. this is coming from the book that foreshadowed douglas’s sexuality by having him be associated w/ gay artists!!!!

even natasha’s very first and last mentions are associated with gayness. her first mention being how she watched a fellini movie with flan (context says it’s la dolce vita, which has an explicitly gay plotline), and of course, dr. tert explicitly stating that a version of natasha is a lesbian (!!) ofc dr. tert isn’t the most reliable source, but the point is that after you just finished the book, the final thought youre meant to have about natasha is that she’s gay!!!

another one of the most important scenes is halloween, which literally opens with natasha pinning flan to her bed. then, natasha yells at flan to break up with gabriel and get over adam. natasha empathizes in her speech that flan isn’t being true to herself by liking them. considering that flan is natasha and usually natasha has more awareness over what flan knows but can’t admit.....

and then they go upstairs and undress together.

flan notes:

they were constantly looking at each other’s bodies

flan feeling “liquid and naughty” when they did. even before putting on the dress, she feels powerful.

“[natasha] looked at me as i felt the sudden true flush of desire.” <- actual line from the book

later during the party, while flan and adam are having sex, flan spends half the paragraph thinking about how gorgeous she/natasha is. flan really does not miss an opportunity to talk about natasha’s beauty throughout the book lmao

another thing flan does is describe natasha using romantic metaphors.

like she literally associates natasha’s gum with a kiss and then admits to using pathetic fallacy.

flan does it a lot throughout the book.

and not just that. natasha also plays the role of a boyfriend in flan’s life, and flan is always happier to be with natasha than with gabriel or adam.

and when adam flakes on his date with flan, natasha literally takes her out to the movies.

speaking of movies, the day flan was supposed to go to the movies as a date with gabriel is the first day that she helps douglas hide his homosexuality. most of flan’s friends’ issues mirror flan’s own, as shown in the halloween party. callous breakups, jealousy, etc. struggling with being gay in a homophobic society is a major theme in the book with characters like douglas and ron, and it would make sense for flan to experience it, too, even if she doesn’t realize.

a lot of gabriel and flan’s relationship reads to me as a metaphor for comphet. not only does flan not like him, but she talks about how things are supposed to be.

(also, on the previous page, flan compares kissing gabriel to opening an old carton of milk. she isn’t thrilled lol)

even though flan’s feelings for adam are more intense than the ones for gabriel, they’re also forced to a certain extent.

heres the first time she talks about adam:

natasha is shocked. if flan truly loved adam, wouldnt she love him fully? if she did, natasha’s inital reaction would be supportive, but instead she just makes fun of him. flan never even admits why she likes adam, not even to herself. flan doesn’t even think that she and adam will work out, judging by her hesitancy. over and over, natasha tells flan that adam is a jerk and to get over him.

flan tries very hard to convince herself that she likes adam, and it works. she’s telling everyone (and herself) that she loves adam while also avoiding him and not having any reason to love him, other than the superficial.

“he is the only appropriate person for me to like”

natasha didn’t find out gabriel’s crush on flan until september 21st, over 60 pages later. lily might have known, but who was natasha thinking about???

also, flan and adam are also cast as husband and wife in the play. they are literally playing the parts that were given to them!!

even though flan has gotten herself in deep, there have been multiple times where flan almost does get over adam! she mentions feeling bored of him, avoiding him, just not caring until he always ropes her back in at the last minute. she’s put her self-worth in his opinion of her, and doesn’t give up until the very end.

from the beginning, adam was always more of a symbol than a person. he represents men as a whole, or the idea of them. flan literally falls in love with an image of a man (the statue of david) rather than an actual one, and projects that image onto adam. kate and flan talk about how they would be better off without all the adams.

all her life, flan has been fed these societal expectations on what kind of relationships she should have and who she should be. she clings onto those expectations, even when she never loved adam to begin with. it takes her until halloween to accept that whether he likes her or not doesn’t matter -- he’s a jerk. in general flan’s arc is about how societal pressures, to act a certain way, look a certain way, love a certain way, etc etc can mess with their own self perception and maybe cause them to kill someone.

SO LIKE... I'm a hoe for Theo and I will forever love his route even though I wish the story wasn't squeezed to death by a month. 😞

I wanna take a moment to to adore the fact that this grumpy ass guard dog has so much little brother energy I can't help, but scream (IRL I will be too scared too, but he's really funny when he's being bullied I'm sorry). I mean irl I'll probably bite his hand and tell him to leave me tf alone, but God he's adorable and scary with his older brother. I still feel heartbroken though because of... Well backstory reasons (if you know you know).

Alsoo.... I adore his frenemy... Probably bc he's my frenemy. My God I have such a love-hate feeling with this flirty mfer it's not even funny. I did legit hate him at first though and I still kinda do especially because he does creep me out a little with his flirting like... I get it's an act for the most part, but much like he hates how unreadable Dazai is, I honestly have a hard time reading him too. Still though, I feel really heartbroken for this dork. Yet I also wanna smack him in the face with a broom bc holy shit he needs a reality check. Like SIR this is not okay... Also I love the way this guy just had this pouty face, kinda makes me wanna bully him a little (even though I'll probably be to scared to bully him just like with Theo). Irl I'll probably absolutely hide from him though like the flag and absolutely wouldn't tolerate his attitude (I know he'll actually be understanding, but that'll take a long time to believe...) I feel bad, but like that's the honest truth.

I wanna befriend Issac, but I'll probably be scared to approach him. I mean we probably won't have much in common bc I'm anime/ manga/art-ish hoe, but something about him makes me wanna befriend him (possibly marry him)? He just looks so friend SHAPED even though he hates it...

Also I hc Levi with gifted kid burnout (totally not bc I'm sorta projecting myself onto him). Bro undervalues himself way too much... I was also gonna add that IRL every brother in the game will probably hate me solely bc I absolutely have no confidence and I rather hide especially to due the fact that I'll be far from home. 💀 I also probably be too scared to talk to Levi and Mammon even though I love them very much. YES! Let’s all agree that ONE MONTH IS TOO SHORT! At least Ikesen MC had 3 months before deciding to stay in the past. It bugs me that we have such a short time with them. I understand they didn’t want really long routes or whatever, but... damn Cybird, ONE MONTH? But it’s still better than ELEVEN DAYS, right? Yes, I’m talking TO YOU, Mystic Messenger.

HASIUEHASIUEHAS, he calls us hondje but he is such a puppy! Like Vincent just goes “Be nice, Theo. Shut it, Theo” and he just “Fine, Broer…” HIUSAHEAUISHESAIUH. But yeah, I know! It’s been a while, but I played his routes... Interlude helped a little to remember some things. And damn… it’s a lot to take in and develop IN ONE MONTH, CYBIRD! For both of them, really. If he considers you a friend, it means so much to him! But I’d rather marry him, HAISUEHASUIHESA. And we would bond over the things we like, even if they’re so different. I like the stars, but I don’t know much about them, so he could teach me. And I could tell him about all my favorite animes, mangas and games. 

Ooooh! I searched for it and… I can totally see Levi! People tend to think Satan is the only one that’s actually smart, but they all are smart in their own ways. I feel Levi is not appreciated enough, even in-game. Sometimes he’s there just to be funny and to be the awkward, shy guy. My baby doesn’t deserve that, he deserves so much love. Also, I think Mammon totally has ADHD. He’s good with math, as long as you explain it to him as if you were talking about money (his hyperfocus). Belphie is smart too, he sleeps in every class and he still has good grades. 

Irl I’d get closer to Levi and Beel first. I love cooking, so Beel would love me quickly. I wouldn’t help Belphie because I’d obey Lucifer and stay away from the attic, HAISEHASIUEHSA. Mammon is the type of friend I could have and that I would want to kill every 2 seconds, but I couldn’t leave him alone or he’d get in trouble and get himself killed. But out of everyone, I think Solomon is more the type of friend I usually have? I don’t know why though, I just have this feeling about him, AHSIEUHASUIEHSA.

1 28. Does anyone read your fics before you post them? If so, who?

For the most part, no. I don't think I'm consistent enough to have a regular beta reader around, I'd be super frustrating. But when I wrote my Beauty and the Beast AU, "Bittersweet & Strange", for Create-a-Thon 2022, I knew it was a really big project (for me) and I only had a month and a half to do it. So I reached out to @crackinglamb because I knew having a beta would make editing easier and keep me from giving up because she'd be expecting chapters, and she pulled you (Angel!) in, and ngl that group chat singlehandedly kept me from quitting halfway. It was so, so helpful, the whole process was really fun, and the result is a fic that I'm incredibly proud of. I'll be riding the ego boost from that one for a good long while.

7 34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?

I tend to abstract my IRL problems before they make it into fiction (as you do), but there's definitely some stuff that I put in because I have experience or I'm working through them. I usually work in complicated relationships with parents; I have mixed feelings about mine, and I end up with a lot of flawed bad-people-who-were-good-parents or good-people-who-were-bad-parents, or people who love their children genuinely but really struggle to do good things with it. Thayet got the bulk of that over time, I think; both of her parents are selfish, messy, emotionally stunted people who do love her unconditionally, but her mother died before she could finish raising her, and her father is doing his best for her but he sucks major ass. It's not quite a 1-to-1 to my life because that's boring as fuck (my parents really hate each other and Thayet's did not lol), but that messiness and those complicated feelings live close to my heart.

I end up putting some of my morals or politics or thought experiments into my writing. I really like messy, complicated people because that's interesting; not all of my characters are good people, or maybe they're good for a bad reason, or maybe they're just a product of their environments. My goal with characters is mostly to be interesting, first and foremost.

But what I HAVE noticed recently is that I've been writing a lot of explorations of grief. Like, I fuck with cathartic tragedy real hard, that's always been a thing for me. But this intense grief thing is recent in the last few years. Some of it is IRL stuff, where people near me have almost died, and… honestly, some of it is because I finally realized and admitted that I'm disabled. And I'm taking better care of myself now, coping instead of forcing myself to function like an abled person, but I'm still actively grieving the life I thought I had or the body or brain I thought I could work toward. It does feel a little bit like an actual person I knew is gone, and putting those dramatic representations of living with grief into my writing is definitely therapeutic.

Life has been kinda rough, lately. Things were hard last week, got better for a few days, then Sunday everything went to shit, again. Long story short: I injured myself, was in intense physical pain for several days, got so stressed out about feeling like shit/not being able to get as much done as I wanted to that the stress caused further physical issues, which in turn made me more stressed…ugh.

I haven’t been sleeping well. I lay awake listening to the freight trains—which are so loud that sometimes they sound like they’re running right through our backyard—and wishing I were on one of them. When I do sleep, I have fucked-up dreams. Elephants with half their skulls missing, piles of maggots, talking cats. Old friends getting deathly ill and not telling me.

Despite all that, I managed to finish my chapbook manuscript and get it in to the publisher, and to finish the editing/proofreading and graphic design jobs I was doing for $$. I worked from bed as much as possible, but I worked. I’m really excited about the chapbook, like I think it is really really good, and that’s kinda huge cuz normally when I finish a project I’ve been working on for a while my first instinct is to burn it and throw the ashes into a dumpster. And I got paid for the big editing/proofreading job this morning, and it is such a relief to actually be able to put a little bit of money in my fucking savings account again.

I’m working on a radio show (podcast) to go along with the chapbook, sort of an audio annotation or ‘liner notes’ if you will. It has made me realize how fucking much I missed being a DJ, whether live on air or in a pre-recorded podcast format, and now I’m thinking I might actually start up a regular podcast again. Maybe start out every other month, so I don’t get burnt out or have it become yet another thing I’m stressed about.

I did have one weird-but-good dream the night before last: I dreamt I met Tommy Stinson and we started a ska band together. Yeah, IDK either. Probably just because I’ve had the ‘Mats on the brain, and I’ve been listening to a lot of ska lately, too. But at least it was a fun dream, and not a creepy or scary one, for once.

I have a crush. I think it’s mutual. Nothing overt has been said by either one of us, but I can generally tell. Fortunately, they live far away and I doubt we’ll ever meet IRL, so I can keep this crush safely in the realm of fantasy.

Sometimes I think about old friends and lovers, people I’m not in frequent (or any) contact with, and think: “They could be ill, or otherwise in trouble, or even dead, and I’d never know.” Both things have happened to me before—old friends being seriously ill or otherwise in trouble and not telling me until months or years later, and finding out that people I hadn’t spoken to in months or years had, in fact, died. Since that dream about one of my best/longest-known friends being sick and not telling me, I felt the need to let certain friends know that they’re on my mind, and I’ve been reaching out.

There are small good things, as always: iced coffee, music, finally working on finishing up RC 26 now that the chapbook and dayjob stuff has calmed down. And on Tuesday, P. and I are taking the kiddos on a day trip. We’re gonna drive to a town about an hour and a half away to have lunch at a burger joint we’ve heard great things about, then hit a state park on the way home.

short answer: good! recovering from some medical/phyiscal trauma, career is kicking into gear, spiritually growing. life went to shit over spring break, i have recovered, i am doing well now. altho, i desperately need to make irl friends, and i hate the summer in the south, y'all.

the long answer is gonna be REALLY FUCKING LONG. and under the cut, because holy shit, i have gone through some shit since march.

so here is what happened over spring break. this is the big thing. i will cover the medical stuff and then move into school+career, then personal life. feel free to not read all of this, or do, it's all the hot goss of my life, but also y'all don't need the 411 of some random internet stranger's life for the past 1-2 months lmfao

trigger warning for: semi graphic description of my car accident, medical trauma, drinking, drunk driving, injuries, etc.

my life kinda turned upside down over spring break.

the fuckening of spring break 2022

march 18th at 5 am i was in a car accident. i was a passenger, the driver was drunk. i did not know that. i fell asleep at a house party and he offered to drive me home. instead, he drove me into a parked delivery truck. i lost consciousness on impact. i was trapped in the passenger side. the police and firefighters had to pull me out of the driver side of the truck because they could not get me out of the wreckage of my side of the truck.

diagnosis at the hospital: - a severe concussion - whiplash - cuts/bruises from the airbags and windshield (and somehow the door and dashboard broke?) - neck sprain, wrist sprain - and a couple other miscellaneous injuries.

the other serious injuries we found later with x rays: - both of my shoulders are fucked up - two of my vertebrae in my neck are totally touching when they shouldn't be - my lower spine actually completely shifted to the left since i am baby, and do not want neck and lower spine surgery, i'm trying to do physical therapy to fix it. i start in a week! (the days i have PT i will have to wear a neck brace and not turn my head, it'll be really sexy).

i found out because of my concussion my left eye permanently doesn't dilate or move in sync with my right now, either. so.. i have an eye doc appointment tomorrow to find out more. also, if i close my eyes standing up i fall over immediately lol. it's very sexy of me, very cool!

i dropped two of my four classes. i have one final on Friday, and i am finishing my other class by the end of May. i am a little stressed about that, but it is what it is at this point. one. more. year. of. college!!!!!!!

not sure how this is gonna affect the whole I Am Already Kinda Disabled Thing. we're not sure how long term this concussion damage is gonna be. although the vision stuff is most likely permanent. but i am lucky, all things considered. no breaks. no amnesia. like, i walked away with an intact body. for having my side of a pickup truck driven into a two axle delivery truck i am surprisingly intact!

so that was the big thing.

post spring break 2022- career and academics

i spent like, the first week after that just sleeping at home basically. our (my fiance and i's) dog Juno went to boarding, and i did as much recovering as possible. my fiance was able to finish his undergrad thesis in peace because of that, which was awesome. (relative peace).

i dropped two classes, took an incomplete on one. the one i took an incomplete on i haven't thought about yet, but i need to finish my final paper and take my final by the end of this month/early june. it should be easy- i dog sit for 12 days starting the 17th so i can pretty much knock shit out then.

the other one, i lost out on participation points... but meh. i got a 92 on my final project. my final is friday. i need to study. AHHH. but there's no way i'll get less than a C, and i'm gonna go into dog training as a career at this point anyways (canine behaviorists say what! ya girl is going to dog school after human school lmfao) so i Do Not Fucking Care.

like i've said a bajillion times, i work as a dog trainer, and i fucking LOVE IT !!

it's something that has become so unbelievably important to me- and i had to take time off since the 18th. i was actually supposed to go in that night and had to call off from the hospital. (my boss was like "what the fuck, Bee, what the fuCK-"). but eventually, i got into pet sitting- some of my coworkers have become really close friends of mine recently, and since i mentioned wanting to go into canine behavior (basically helping reactive dogs- those who are normally branded as aggressive- through actual science and positive reinforcement) they let me shadow their spicy clients) i get to be a pet sitter for dogs who are too spicy for boarding, and that's pretty chill for where i'm at in my stage of recovery. then i suddenly got a huge influx of potential clients, lol.

so recently, i've been looking into registering a pet sitting business as an LLC. i spent two weeks dog sitting a human/dog/noise reactive dog who was even reactive in her house (and by the end she CUDDLED WITH ME. i cried when i left) and a lot of it was spent researching if i should start a training business first or pet sitting business first, and i decided pet sitting was better. planning a career, etc. looking into taxes and shit. real adult stuff.

post spring break- personal life and other stuff

i am still very much engaged and happy!!!

we have a niece now and i met her and she is the smallest human ever. we got a dog and her name is Juno and i love her as well. we still have the cats, Freyja and Kiki, and i love them as always. non intimate friendships/acquaintanships have been in flux, other relationships have been in flux or fading, my relationship with myself has been steadily improving.

i am becoming close with two of my coworkers and they are now like, actually my friends. which is really cool because the crash was kinda an awakening for me spiritually that i wasn't surrounded by the type of people i wanted to be surrounded by? like i wanted to move into being an adult who did shit like have a career, and improve myself, and avoid situations like the crash, and just avoid drama, and i was like 1. i have no irl friends post covid really and 2. the few i do have are not the types that really add support into my life.

also my fiance and had long-ass convos about polyamory and what it means to be actually ethically nonmonogamous and we are poly! which isn't super new but we kinda re committed to being effective and healthy and we've been doing that in pretty much every area of our life and it's Really Fucking Nice my dude.

Dream and Y/n have been dating for almost 1 year and moved in together at their 7 months mark. But chat didn’t need to know that. Neither did your friends. Y/n and Dream wanted to keep their lives private, until now.

“Oi Clay, wanna tell people we’re dating?”

“Yeah sure, let’s make it fun tho” Dream said with a devilish grin. “When the other is streaming, you may drop any hints. If they find out in my stream you win, vice versa. Winner gets anything from the loser.” He is now sticking one finger in the air and chest out.

“Deal!” They shake hands, after he didn’t let go. He pulls her into him and places a kiss on her lips. Giggles slipping thru her lips.

“Good luck, I’m going to stream first.” He leaves after pressing another kiss to her lips and walks to his recording room.

“Ok- WAIT YOU DIDNT DO A FACE REVEAL ITS NOT FAIR!” Y/n is now pouting but laughs at her boyfriend’s silly antics. Let the games begin.

DREAM’S STREAM

Dream was streaming some timed speed runs while george, sap, and bad. As Dream was looking for the fortress, he got a donation notification from “dream’s sugar baby” with $100. He was too focused on killing blazes and the tts reads the message.

“Come to bed bb” He freezes. The boys were laughing at the donation while Dream was to busy calming down the red creeping up his face. At the moment, he didn’t hear someone join the call.

“Hey guys!”

“Y/N!! Guess what happen!”

“Dream is a sugar daddy!”

“George she was supposed to gues-”

“Oh that donation was me-”

“WHAT” They cut the girl off as the call goes silent.

“Dream’s your sugar daddy???” This brought said boy back to reality.

“AHAHAHA you guys are so gullible, Dream spent this much money on me before, i just want to repay him.” She says in a genuine voice, but her evil smirk negates what she said.

“Uhm guys thanks for watching! I have to go bye!” Dream ended his stream faster than a bullet. He leaves the call and rushes to his girlfriend’s recording room. Luckily she left the call before the others could her her door slam open with a very red Clay. “Wha-wh” She laughs and walks up to him placing a kiss on his cheeks.

“That’s a point for me” patting his chest and walking past to get started on dinner.

Y/N - 1 DREAM-0

NEXT DAY - Y/N’S STREAM

Y/n is a builder on the dream smp and works along with sam, awesamdude. They were currently working on the Tommyinnit Hotel. When she was adding the final touches to the outside of the hotel. A donation pops up.

“Calliewasfound donated $5, Are you and dream a thing or is it just a bit?” Read the tts.

“Callie thank you for the $5, it’s just a bit” She went back to building, going to the top of the scaffolding. A few seconds after a new dono was read.

“Y/N’s Sugar Daddy donated $500, just a bit, that’s not what it sounded like last night” y/n choked on air, accidentally falling off the scaffolding.

“Y/N?!?” Sam exclaimed as he came down to place his friend’s items in a chest.

“D-dream thank you for the dono, uhm” By now her chat was teasing her seeing how her face cam caught her expressions. Only she can hear Clay’s loud laugh boom through the house.

“Y/n are you okay? What happened?” Sam voiced with concern.

“Yeah just- this dono threw me off”

“Oh ok, well your stuff in this chest”

“Yeah thanks Sam” For the rest of the stream she couldn’t focus. Sure what he did got her as bad as she got him but she’s still not used to his flirty persona. When she ended the stream she ran to their shared bedroom and jumped into his chest, knocking the wind out of him.

Y/N-1 DREAM-1

Y/N NEXT STREAM (because Dream doesn’t stream :)

It was a chill stream today, she planned to build a house for herself on the smp. After settling for building a house and a few villager homes far away from the smp to avoid any griefing. She started her build and waited for the questions to roll in. A few minutes into the stream, she heard her bathroom door in her recording room open. Out of frame, Clay walks out with just a towel around his waist and hair wet from his shower.

“What are you do-” She was cut off by a pair of green boxers being thrown over her face. Followed by the sound of feet running out the door, closing with a click. She quickly removes the boxers, showing her red face. The only thing heard from the stream is her background music.

“sappymamas donated $5, who was that?”

‘shit’ “That was— my roommate! Yup just my roommate” Y/n says with an awkward smile. Then her door opens again.

“Just a roommate huh?”

“C-cla” before she can finish a hand out of frame grabs her jaw and chin pulling her into a passionate kiss. His shirtless top showing off his muscles. Chat was going crazy. Not only did they find out that the young streamer was taken, they believe that her boyfriend was the owner of the Dream smp.

“mushroomgeorge donated $10, Is that Dream?!” She decided to turn off her mic and camera as Clay watches in amusement. Quickly she apologizes to her chat saying she’ll finish building offline and ends the stream early. Oh this will be a pain to explain.

Y/N-1 DREAM-2

It’s all gone. A few weeks later after finishing her village, she comes back to see it all burnt to the ground and tommy holding a bucket of lava. Being on call with the dream team, wanting to show them her new build. George and Nick were angry. She told the two that she built each of them a house if they wanted to stay over. Both boys whip out their diamond sword and crossbow. Dream was quiet. He looked at his girlfriend’s stream to see that she is almost in tears. He remembered how excited she was to show him their new house in her village, a dog named after hers and a cat named after patches.

“Tommy.”

“Hey Big D!”

“What are you doing.” Dream whipped out his enchanted axe

“I saw this ugly village and wanted to burn it do- WHAT THE FUUUCKKKK!!”

Tommyinnit was slain by Dream with [Y/N PROTECTION SERVICES]

“YEAHHH LETS GOOOOOO”

“POGGGGG”

George and Sap cheer.

“If you get near me or my girlfriend again Tommy. You will lose your last life. I promise you that.” Dream says walking away

“WAIT WHAT??” The people on the call break out of character as they find out that their suspicions of the two were true. Y/n’s character comes into view as he sees her crouching near a burnt down house of what he assumed to be their house. He slowly walks up to her and drops her favorite flower in front of her named “my heart”.

“Let’s get started shall we?” She nods in game and irl and they head off together to start gathering materials. With the help of sap and george who are still trying to get an answer from the couple who continues to ignore them.

“Wait dream, it was you who threw their boxers to her face?” Sap wheezes as he brings back what happened in the stream a few weeks ago.

They managed to finish a few hours later. Grabbing an item frame, Y/n places it above her bed with the flower she received from Dream. Out of nowhere, Clay comes in and places a bed right next to hers.

“Hold on.” She quickly runs out and a few minutes comes back with a poppy in hand. “Here.” She drops the flower in front of him and he basically melts at the name.

“I love you too Y/n”

“Hehe” now it’s her turn to melt seeing him put a frame and the flower up. The couple completely forgetting about the other two in the call.

The bet was all forgotten about as they slept through the night next to each other.

“Clayyyyy,Tommy’s trying to take our flowers.” Y/n pouted as she watched Tommy’s stream, heading towards her village.

“Don’t worry. I got this.” He places a kiss on her forehead after typing something quickly on his phone.

“Alright chat, the plan is to steal the flowers and force them to trade it with the discs.”

A Year of Writing - 2021 Writing Wrap-up

@ecwrenn suggested the Writeblr community do a “Your Writing Year in Review” post with things one has posted, so others can catch up on things they might have missed. This is such a wonderful idea, I just had to join in. So, with many thanks to her for organising, here is my Year of Writing.

Breakdown 

I’ve written quite a bit this year. A lot more than I thought, if I’m being honest. The dates on my spreadsheet are a little out of whack, but I’ve written somewhere in the region of 85k words this year, across 39 pieces (one of which was my on-going nano started last year, which had 52k added this year).

My longest work that was added to this year was The Ruby Falls (the aforementioned long-running Nano), bringing the word count to 128,274. The shortest work that was created this year was A Tea for the Sore of Head, with a word count of just 96.

It’s not too surprising that most of my writing was done in July, as this was the TES Summer Fest week. This was an event geared towards creators in The Elder Scrolls fandom, which I very much enjoyed participating in (many thanks to the organisers of TESFest). I also did a few prompts from the Homestead Spring and Autumn prompt weeks, which allowed me to stretch my writing muscles with some more original work.

This year I was advised by an editor friend to work on my subtext, so quite a lot of my drabbles have been towards stretching my writing muscles in that direction, or trying out fresh styles (Dearest Mama, May I Come Home? is a prime example of this). I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from these experiments, and I feel like my writing has advanced from what it has been for the last ~5yrs, so I’m very proud of that.

I spruced up some older Titan - World of Fighting Fantasy fics and published them to AO3, bringing the Published figure up by more than was finished this year. I also joined two new fandoms to write in - Starbound and Thunderbirds Are Go. I’m pleased at how well these first few forays have been, and I have some more stories planned in these fandoms as well. A couple of my original works have also seen a lot of success too, notably Before It Shatters, and received glowing comments.

Plans for 2022?

I have a lot of Big Scary IRL stuff that has to be completed by the end of Jan, and the Homestead is putting on a “Be a better writer” prompt event (organised by the above mentioned editor) in Feb/ March time which I’m very excited for.

My main project to tackle, thought, will be The Ruby Falls. I want to have finished it by April, to have it beta read and final edits by October and published to AO3 this time next year. How achievable that is, is anyone’s guess ^.^;

Of course, there will always be lots of other short stories added to the mix over the year, and maybe I’ll finish some of those 69 WIPs... But outside those few big milestones, my plans are mostly fluid, tbh :D

a/n - hello lovely nonnie! i’m fine but i’ve been really swamped with... life lately, which is why it’s taking me soooo long to put out requests and i’m so sorry, but i really hope you’ll like this!! reader doesn’t play a specific character, it’s a made up vauge one so everyone could read:) also, chris isn’t the biggest harry potter fan in this one because i don’t think he is one irl lol. "Babe, is the popcorn ready yet?" Chris yelled from the living room.

"No, but if you stop asking every two seconds maybe it'll take faster!" you retorted from the kitchen.

"Fine, fine, but I'm choosing the movie till you get over here!"

"Are you talking to the popcorn or to me?" you laughed.

"Both of you!"

A few minutes later you put the popcorn into a big bowl and made your way to the living room. Upon seeing the movie paused on the TV screen, you groaned.

"Chriiis," you drawled, "I don't wanna watch that! I'm in it!"

"Precisely," he smirked triumphantly, "but you said nothing when I said I was gonna pick the movie, so you can't complain. Besides, I always watch the Marvel movies with you when you want to, now it's my turn to watch your movies."

"You're not even that big of a Harry Potter fan!" you objected, sitting down next to him and shoving some popcorn in your mouth anyway.

"But I'm a big fan of you," he smiled, leaning to grab a mouthful of the popcorn himself.

"Ugh," you smiled, "well, I can't say no to my fans," you said, faux-posh, and he grinned before turning on the movie.

About ten years ago, you wrapped your role in the Harry Potter franchise. You were in all of the movies, albeit not having the most screen time, but you played a friend of the golden trio's, from Ravenclaw. To this day, you couldn't believe that's what you got recognized for, since you did quite a few other projects, but usually people recognized you from the franchise, which you didn't mind that much, since it was such a positive experience for you as a young actress.

About ten minutes into the movie, Chris sighed. "Where are you?" he grumbled.

"They're not even in Hogwarts yet," you said, "be patient. Oh, here's Daniel's line!" you giggled. "I remember being on set that day and he just couldn't get it right. Kept stumbling over his words," you smiled fondly.

"Isn't it a magical train? Can't it like… go faster or something?" Chris complained.

"You can always fast forward it if you want to. Or we could just watch something else," you suggested with a smile.

"No! We're watching this," he said adamantly.

"Okay!" you laughed.

A few minutes later they finally got to Hogwarts, meeting your character for the first time.

"Awww, look at you!" Chris grinned, "you were such a baby!"

"Well, that was over a decade ago, so I'll take it," you giggled, "but just so you know if you'd told me that then I would've been real mad. Working on a film set makes you feel very mature," you smiled.

"Was it fun?" Chris asked, "working this young on such a huge franchise?"

"Yeah, it really was," you reminisced. "I read the books before and I absolutely adored them, so being told I get to work on the movies was a huge thing. Plus, I got to make a bunch of friends, you know."

"But wasn't hard, with school and all?"

"I mean, I guess it was a little packed, but I liked staying busy. We all studied on set together, and it was really nice," you smiled. "Oh my god, and Emma and I had the biggest crush on Tom," you laughed.

"Like Draco?" Chris frowned.

"Not really Draco, cause he's the villain sorta, but Tom was very cool," you giggled again, "looking back, I honestly don't know how crush-worthy he really was, but especially in the first movies it's most of what Emma and I talked about. But don't worry, I like Captain America way better now," you smiled and leaned in to peck his lips.

"Well, I'm glad to hear that," he chuckled.

"Oh my god, and the special effects were really fun to do," you said. "When you did them it felt a little stupid but then watching yourself cast spells and see dragons and stuff, it was the coolest thing to see, especially the first time I saw it."

"So why are you so reluctant to watch it now?" Chris smirked.

"First of all, don't think I haven't noticed you're conversing with me, so you must be nearly as reluctant as I am," you smiled, "and secondly, I already saw all the dragons and that excitement wears off, so now I'm only left with hating seeing myself on screen," you laughed. "I was so young, it's just… weird I guess. Also, not to sound arrogant, but my acting skills have very much improved since then," you chuckled.

"I'm not reluctant to watch Harry Potter, I'm ecstatic!" he objected.

"Alright. We're watching Not Another Teen Movie tomorrow then," you smirked.

"Ugh fine. Can we drop the movie? I love you, but the plot is hardly compelling to me in my old age," he smiled.

"Don't make me make you watch Not Another Teen Movie to prove to you that you literally look the same now, if not even better," you threatened jokingly. "And I'd love to watch a movie we both really want to watch."

"Disney?" Chris smiled.

"Whatever, you toddler," you laughed and snuggled closer to him as he put on another movie for you to enjoy.

“I’m sorry we didn’t watch the whole movie,” Chris smiled, “but you’re all the magic I need.”

“Well I’m not sorry we didn’t finish the movie, but please shut your gorgeous face if you want to continue watching this one before I use my magnificent powers of distraction,” you smirked.

“I’m listening,” Chris laughed before leaning in to brush his lips against yours.

It’s an Update

Hello, Riddle here! I know I’ve been pretty quiet on Tumblr lately. Here’s an update on my situation:

I will definitely post more fanfic updates soon. I’ve picked at drafts, but haven’t posted anything lately. Here are the reasons why:

I got a new IRL job. It’s a good fit for me, but I have less free time than I used to, of course. It’s a job that involves writing lots of articles on a variety of topics, and I enjoy how every day is a little different

Most of my free time for the last year has gone towards my mod work at the Creature-Crossing ARPG, and to my personal CC writing. I’ve been working on new activities over there (my recent favorite being our seasonal familiar shows... I won first place in the summer show!) and I have a lot of plot plans that are coming together now. If you ever want to see my original characters and read my CC writing, you can find my character directory HERE and my Table of Contents HERE.

Once November 1st hits, I won’t be preparing for the release of any more CC activities or events. All future activity or event releases will be overseen by the other mods, and I’ll simply be someone they can ask for extra help if needed. This is a big change for a mod who spent the last 12 months working on new releases, and will give me back some of the free time my IRL job will eat

The Creature-Crossing admin (my boss) greenlit my request to bring an assistant on the mod team who will specifically help me with a lot of my behind-the-scenes work, such as data entry and organization. I’ve never had another mod who specifically helps me with the back end duties before, so that will be awesome. I will need to spend some time training them, but once they are official, that will take some of my workload off and allow me more free time for this blog and personal writing time.

So, what does this update mean for your fanfics?

They’ll be active again soon! I’ve been picking at them behind the scenes, trying to build up a buffer. In an ideal world, I would love to release a new chapter for SOMETHING every Friday. I doubt this will be possible, but it’s something I would love to work towards in the future. Realistically, you can probably expect some kind of fanfic update once every two Fridays (two updates per month).

There might be some Fridays where posting an update is not possible. Instead, I’ll make a post about what progress I made instead. In the past, I often overworked myself to get a chapter out in time for my old deadline. I will not be doing that anymore, but will instead hold myself to a goal of “Make progress on something every week.”

In the best ideal world, I would love to post one FOP fanfic update per week and one non-FOP fanfic update per week. This is not likely to happen for a long, long time, but that would be the dream.

- IRL work or mod work may have kept me busy this week

- Creature-Crossing writing... I will try to prioritize my fanfics more, but my CC writing is still important to me and I will be working on it in a lot of my free time too. At the moment, I have a hard deadline of December 14th that I need to meet if I want to release huge plot drama on the day that it happens in canon. I’ve been building up to this for a long time, so I’m really excited about that.

I currently have summer or autumn 2022 planned as the “finale” for the majority of my plot to explode. I will be hosting a member-run event in Creature-Crossing that will last for two months, so a lot of my time from January until the event’s release will be spent doing event prep. Once the event ends, my story content will mostly be a “return to slice of life.” Stories will be more casual one-offs as characters grow, live their lives, and start their own families. Hitting seasonal deadlines for plot will no longer be so important. I’ll be giving Creature-Crossing work less attention after that, and much more attention to my fanfics.

- I may not have a fanfic chapter out each week, but I WILL post a note every Friday to let you know what I have been doing with my time. You’ll see me around. Feel free to send Asks and talk!

What non-FOP fanfics would you like to work on?

For literal years, I’ve been claiming I want to post Mario World fanfics. This is still something I want to do. I tag Mario World posts as “mushrooms and more.” I’ve already done a lot of worldbuilding, I have thousands of words of content written for this fandom... I just haven’t posted any of it. I hope to do this soon.

- “WordGirl” fanfics are prioritized over Mario World fanfics. After I finish my first “WordGirl” multi-chapter, I will probably be ready to post my Mario World ‘fics. I may possibly post some Mario World one-shots in between other fanfic updates. Might take another year or more before I touch Mario stuff unless there’s high interest in seeing it sooner?

I also really want to write some WordGirl ‘fics and get more involved with the fandom community. I’ve been building headcanons and lore for this show ever since I was a kid, and I have multiple ‘fics for this fandom that I want to write.

- “AlgoRhythm” is a ‘fic I have already posted on FFN and AO3, about WordGirl introducing Kid Math to the villains in town

- 28 Cities is a ‘fic I started about Rhyme and Reason before they arrived in Fair City. I put it on hiatus since it didn’t seem like anyone was interested, but I’m willing to post more for it if there is interest in it now that years have passed and I’ve gotten more followers who like WordGirl. I have a lot of worldbuilding and plot I never shared for it

- Factor It In is a ‘fic I’ve been working for a while that parallels the official show from the moment Kid Math arrives in town. It focuses on Rex’s struggle to adjust to this world as a child coming into his superpowers for the first time (Y’know, the whole “superheroes don’t have powers when they’re on their home planets” thing), his struggle to adapt to the social world of a non-logical planet, and Becky’s struggle to help him become accustomed to Earth and learn to share it with her as well. If the episode “Kid Math” was a full-length novel about Rex’s arrival and character development, that’s what this story is. This is the highest priority of all my non-FOP ‘fics... I’ve had a cover image made for 6 months and even though I tried setting it aside, I’ve always been super inspired to write for it. If I felt like it would be a good idea to commit to weekly updates alongside my FOP updates, I would, haha.

- I have two one-shot WIPs called “Squishy Feelings” and “A Little Ambiguity”, one of them focusing on Becky and Rex talking about the events of “Rhyme and Reason” and what it means for Rex’s secret identity, and the latter being a future ‘fic showing WordGirl and Kid Math dealing with life 10 to 15 years down the road. I’ll probably post the latter, not sure yet on the former.

- If desired, I may make a WordGirl specific sideblog where I post lore, answer Asks, post character profiles [smaller than my FOP sideblog ones], and mention fanfic updates. If you would be interested in this, feel free to send me an Ask requesting I do this. If there’s not interest, I’ll just keep my WordGirl stuff on the main blog.

- I’d like to get more involved in the WordGirl community, so I’ll probably post more content and reblog more art and headcanons

I also have a handful of miscellaneous ideas I might follow through with. I’d like to write at least one “TUFF Puppy” fanfic so I can say I did. In a perfect world I would like to finish the two “Danny Phantom” and “Bunsen Is a Beast” fanfics I started because... I just kind of want to dip my toe in each of the Hartman shows once since I already went through all the effort of worldbuilding for them to make them canon in a single Hartman show universe. “ChalkZone” is another show I adore and might touch someday (You may recall I have a full outline planned for an FOP/ChalkZone crossover ‘fic called “Dust to Dust”).

Will I write all of these things? Maybe not. I have no idea if I want to spend the next 10+ years writing fanfics, or if I’ll simply be done with all misc. fanfics immediately once I decide to be done with my main ‘fics. I definitely intend to write for a few more years and finish my main ‘fics, but I might not go through with some less popular side ‘fics if life is getting busy for me.

What is the posting schedule for FOP ‘fics?

Reedfilter Rules, Frayed Knots, Origin of the Pixies, the 130 Prompts project, and “Come What May” are all high priority FOP writings. I will swap between them depending on my mood that week.

Here are some other ‘fics I want to work on.

- If you like, you can send me Asks requesting I work on a specific story above the rest. I will try to prioritize whichever stories interest you guys most.

Snips and Snails is a ‘fic I started and posted the first chapter for years ago. I’m not sure when I will get back to it, as I ran into some writer’s block. It’s still on tentative hiatus for now..... Possibly forever, though I hope it isn’t forever since it’s only supposed to be, like, five more chapters.

Pink and Gray is on official hiatus. I actually have a lot written for it, but I know it’s a little weird to put so much time and energy into Gary and Betty content when... well, let’s be honest: they’re my niche favorites and most of you probably don’t care. So, I am lifting my usual “no spoilers” policy from my Ask Box. If you would like to ask about my Gary and Betty backstory headcanons, feel free. I will tag my replies as “ridwriting spoilers” for anyone who wants to blacklist the tag, and spoilers will be hidden under a Read More line. 

I’d like to return to this story someday because there are tons of things I like about it (ranging from Betty’s secret tattoos to Gary’s plot drama with his mom to the background drama between Talon and Anti-Cosmo, but I always feel immense pressure to make it extra cool to make up for the fact these are weird side characters, so... it’s officially at the bottom of the priority pile. Once Talon shows up in Frayed Knots and readers understand who he is and why he exists, I’ll consider coming back to it.

Identity Theft is a story about Foop and his time in the alternate dimension he was flung into following the episode “Playdate of Doom.” To put it short, Foop was abused by alternate versions of his parents in this dimension and he witnessed some pretty intense stuff, including the death of the alt version of himself who existed in that reality. The trauma he experienced resulted in his alternate personality, Hiccup. Foop himself has very few memories of what happened, as Hiccup has all of those memories. This story is canon in my works, and it is regularly referred to during the 130 Prompts as part of Foop’s backstory. It’s my highest priority side story to work on.

Along the Cherry Lane is a 20-chapter work focusing on the lives of the main human cast from age 11 to age 30, with one chapter showing a snippet of their lives each year. You see Timmy raising Tommy and Tammy in this ‘fic, and it ends with them receiving godparents. Since the 130 Prompts don’t give humans much attention, this ‘fic does. You’ll probably see it debut two years from now, closer to when the 130 Prompts is ready to talk more about humans.

If this becomes a popular ‘fic of mine, I’ll probably write a sequel or continue it past Chapter 30 and write about Tammy and Tommy living with fairies, but I won’t if there’s no interest in that.

Little Imperfections is a Pixie AU ‘fic of mine about what life would be like in a universe where the Fairies are even more like insects than I play them as during my main works (where I already play them as semi-similar to insects). In this world, the Head Pixie is a figurehead whose duty is to reproduce for the sake of the colony and do nothing else, and he’s bored out of his mind until he befriends Sanderson, who introduces him to music. It’s extremely self-indulgent and silly because I like Pixies.

Francis is a multi-chapter ‘fic about bully Francis’s life getting yet another fairy godparent in a long string of memory wipes and godparents. It takes place during the canon series, and when you see an “orange fairy” mentioned in some of my writings, it’s usually referring to this fairy. His name is Rover and I occasionally post art of him. I feel like I can’t truly call myself an FOP fanfic writer until I actually write about a godkid and their godparents, haha...

Hawthorn Haven is a side ‘fic that will be posted towards the end of the 130 Prompts, as it veers off from the prompts in its own self-contained multi-chapter story. It will be approximately the length of “Baby, You’re a Rich Man.”

Acacia Arcadia is a far-past ‘fic detailing the fall of the ancient fae, the imprisonment of the nature spirits, the rise and fall of the chimera nation, the fall of the Martian genies, and the early days of the cloudlands. This is close to the bottom of the priority pile... It’s something I spend time on for personal reference to ensure accuracy in my other ‘fics, but it’s probably not what you guys came here to read.

AA has a bunch of characters in it that you might vaguely recognize, such as Ezekiel Whimsifinado, Evadne, Ione, Two Feathers, Rho, and Sablewood (If you’re astute, you might recall cloudland legends and landmarks in modern day that refer back to these characters). There are also a lot of characters who were reincarnated as Anti-Fairies, in accordance to traditional Anti-Fairy beliefs; Foop for example exists as a main character in one of his past lives, and you’ll see a hint dropped about each of his lives in the first chapter of Identity Theft. My tentative plan is to use Foop’s past lives as my central characters, following the events of each part of the timeline until he gets killed and reincarnates at a later point of the timeline.

I also keep some one-shots in a file I call Mixed Nuts and I may possibly post them someday (they’re mostly just one-shots of main cast characters I do to get a feel for their personalities, I have some Wanda and Cupid in here). @zachbrightside and I are also working on a collab ‘fic called Like a House On Fire that shows more of Timmy and Chloe’s lives during Season 10 (especially around the time of “Which Is Wish?”) No news on a release date for that yet.

As I’ve said before, once all my other FOP works are complete, I will write Devil’s Backbone, which is my far-future ‘fic and the finale of my FOP writing. I do not plan to write any more FOP content after that story is finished, as I expect to have all other FOP projects done by then.

- Devil’s Backbone is a finale 'fic, so all worldbuilding from all stories is fair game to blend together, and it’s highly recommended you read everything else first. This story has been outlined since 2016, and it might not be published for another 10 years... Who knows! But it’s something I always work towards as a concrete endgame goal.

- If something serious comes up in my life and I officially decide I don’t want to write this story, I will post the outline for it. The link to this draft is included with all the other Google Docs links I have in a far-future queued post unveiling my WIPs in case I unexpectedly die and you still want to know how my stories would have gone, so you’ll get access to this story eventually even if I die young. Yes, share access is turned on for them all and I do take extra careful measures to be sure that post doesn’t get posted early skldfj

What is the plan for the main blog?

Every Friday, I will post either a fanfic chapter or a progress update. You can blacklist the tag “ridlife” if you do not want to see the progress updates on your dashboard. Fanfic updates will not have the “ridlife” tag, so you will not be blocking them.

During the rest of the week, I might post doodles, reblogs, or general comments. Basically... you’ll see the blog become active again. Feel free to send in Asks about my worldbuilding and thoughts on fanfic characters.

What does this mean for the Riddledeep sideblog?

I really want to go back and edit those character profiles that were posted early by mistake. The reason they were queued is because if I turned them into drafts, they would have been buried all the way at the beginning of my draft collection, and I have many, many drafts saved. There are no page numbers to navigate quickly through the draft collection, so I would have to click through each page one by one if I ever wanted to look at them. I hated doing this, which is why I kept my posts queued.

I was regularly updating the queue deadlines, trying to keep things in the order I wanted to post them in, but Tumblr made a change to the way drafts are dated and it kept throwing off my system. My inability to remember when my queued things would post combined with my busy schedule led to some profiles being posted early and incomplete. I want to fix these.

Over a year ago, my good friend Vulpix150 helped me finalize my designs for the Aos Sí and Daoine Sith. I’ve been sitting on that art in secret for a while, and at some point I plan to post it on the sideblog and talk more about that lore.

Updating fanfics is my higher priority (and it was the priority my followers voted for when I asked you to send votes to my Ask Box a while back). So, I will usually spend my free time working on fanfics unless I need a break from them and want to work on sideblog profiles instead. Thank you for your patience!

TL;DR

I’m posting fanfics again soon. I’m going to take a more relaxed approach to posting them. I’m going to post more of what I want to post and what I feel motivated to post, not always a main ‘fic update. If I’m not “feeling it” when working on a draft, then I’ll set it aside for a while unless I know my followers and readers have high interest in the next chapter of that story. I always write for me first, but if I know there are other people who care a lot about a story, then of course I want to write it for you too!

I’m going to embrace my decade-long love for WordGirl and post more ‘fics and art or this fandom. I’ve always been a little shy about doing this, but I’m ready to make it an official fandom on my main blog (unless there are lots of requests for WordGirl things to be contained in their own sideblog). I will be posting the first chapter for a ‘fic called Factor It In very soon. Love my easily frustrated alien kiddos having a long day.

I am working on Creature-Crossing stuff too, and will be especially busy in November and December. Updates will be slow for a few months, but I hope to find my groove and a good pace soon.

Is there a specific story of mine you like and want more updates for?

Asks and reviews help me know which ‘fics people are enjoying. I plan to keep writing ‘fics no matter what, but I definitely give more time to the ‘fics that get more attention (and I have been spending so much time writing for Creature-Crossing because that’s where the attention was coming from)

It’s easy to stay motivated and get the next part of a story out soon if I know that people like it. It’s always harder if you feel like people are silently judging you and ignoring your posts. Hi zam! I saw a discussion on the bird app about what if LBH had a different Shizun than SQQ, would he fall in love with them just the same? And what a question man... I need answers and opinions, what do you think? One part of me thinks that LBH is so starved for love he'd probably easily fall for any Shizun who treated him with kindness but other part of me doesn't want to believe it since it'd kinda make his love for SY!SQQ real cheap.. wdyt?

Hookay. I have Thoughts but I want to get some stuff out of the way first, mainly the fact that these are simply My Thoughts as someone who exclusively likes BingQiu endgame, to the point where any ship where they aren’t together is a big squick. Other people will not see it this way! Other people might just want to have fun, or they don’t like BQ or they just wanna explore other relationships; this is all valid and good!! This isn’t me telling you why you should like them or to see things my way, this is only what I’ve come up with in regards to why I feel this way about them and why the mere existence of Other possibilities doesn’t threaten or cheapen my view of this ship.

Where I fear we might have a problem is when this argument *is* presented with the intention of cheapening BingQiu? Like, there’s a group of people who genuinely want to just multiship in peace, and there’s another group who already doesn’t feel BingQiu’s love is real and present this as a “gotcha!” to the shippers. I've said before, everyone reads a different, unique story even when the text is the same, and this view, while I think could be presented in a nicer way, is also A Way to see this ship.

Not trying to change anyone's mind here, just giving my take on it.

A bit of meta under the cut, don't read it if you're not into that!! You know who you are!!

The Point (at least for me) isn’t “Luo Binghe fell in love with the first person who showed him kindness”.

BingQiu is not a match made in heaven (bear with me here!), they’re not even from the same world! LBH is a romantic, SQQ is a realist. 

I think there’s a reason Bingge ended up with a thousand unfulfilling relationships and that is because the Romantic Ideal is to be constantly swept off your feet by someone who sees You and Only You, makes you feel Special and feels as strongly about you as you do them. Needless to say that is unrealistic, but if you have Romantic ideals then you might just end up chasing after that endlessly, toss aside the person who no longer makes you feel the Rush of infatuation and look for something new and shiny. The Realist point of view says love isn’t about who carves a thousand statues in your likeness (sorry hualian) but more about who takes care of you when you’re sick.

That is what Luo Binghe learns over the course of the novel. He starts out idolizing a version of Shen Qingqiu that *does not exist* (the Shizun who Always cared about him and had good reason to do the things he did -we know that not to be true for SJ-), and projects onto him his desires (I want Shizun to Only look at me, Why is Shizun *smiling* at others?, I’m going to blow up the world and everyone in it so it’s only Us), but in the end he learns that Shen Qingqiu does not have to stick to his ideal version for LBH to believe he *does* care about him, because despite everything he keeps saving LBH, because he picked up that jade pendant and saved it, because he keeps *choosing* him.

In the end, their love is quiet and honest, which I think is what makes it hard to understand both in-universe and irl (can't speak for anyone else but myself here. I did not care about BingQiu as much as I do now when I finished reading). It’s not “we’re perfect for each other, your flaws are virtues in my eyes”, it’s “I don’t like XYZ about you, and you don’t like ABC about me, let’s grow around it.” I’m confident it’s the kind of relationship that won’t crumble after 10 years when they cant stand each other because the honeymoon phase wore off five years ago, because they’re making a conscious decision to make it work, meeting in the middle and making their home there.

So to answer the subject of this ask, finally, would Luo Binghe get a crush on someone *else* (and maybe even get into a relationship) if he never met Shen Yuan? Probably! In the original novel he got thousands of them. Does this cheapen BingQiu’s relationship? In my eyes, not at all. Their relationship is the most stable and strong (for me), and it has nothing to do with how it started, because it had a rocky start, it has all to do with them using communication and patience to build their relationship in a way that makes them unique.

Personally I like scenarios where they meet in several different ways and at different times but still end up together, but that's a story for another day...

Itona and Ritsu aren’t in official groups, so I put them in where I thought they’d fit in best!

1. Isogai, Mimura, Nakamura, Okano

Wow...I forgot that Nakamura and Okano were ever in the same group

But I love it because I HC their friendship to be a casual but hella fun one

Isogai and Mimura are old friends from last year! I imagine there’s slight awkwardness on Mimura’s side given that they’re in different friend groups now. But Isogai is very friendly and aware, so it passes pretty soon

Nakamura is one of the biggest causes of Isogai’s headaches lmao. But hey, at least they’re on the same wavelength academically.

POOR OKANO. SHE IS A JOCK SURROUNDED BY ACADEMICS.

Well at least she’s interested in science and it’s her best subject. She still feels bored unless they’re dealing with physics, then she’s completely on top of her game.

Nakamura and Okano are the chaotic half. Isogai and Mimura are the ones who wanna get shit done. Unless the girls manage to drag poor Mimura into doing dumb stuff

Have I ever told you guys that once in my Chemistry lab, one of my friends and I managed to break the sink faucet? Like we destroyed it lmfao

Okano is one of Isogai’s most dependable close friends, but she also loves to annoy him for no reason sometimes.

So she’ll ask obvious questions with a smug smile, trying to watch his patience explode. But jokes on her because Isogai has an infinite amount of patience sadly

2. Kurahashi, Yada, Takebayashi, Kimura

They’re a...fairly productive group lmao

Tbh I don’t think Kurahashi is the type to really pay attention to any science outside of biology like me

So she’ll be a BEAST when it comes to that and get 100′s on everything. But like in chem and physics, she’s not as great

Yada is the best at design and organization, so she always takes that job. Making colorful presentation slides? She got it. Need to type up the final report in a google doc? Yep, she’s your girl

Kimura is a gremlin, like I always say. He’s the clown of the group lmfao and will spend more time stalling and messing around than doing actual work

He also tends to lowkey distract Kurahashi with unrelated convos. He tries to talk to Yada too, but she goes into girlboss mode and ignores him

Guys, everyone give it up for Takebayashi. King is hard carrying this entire group

He’s the one who stays the most focused but on occasion can be distracted by Kimura bringing up topics they’re both into, like certain comics or something.

Kurahashi and Yada also can get caught up in their own conversations since they’re besties. Also they will roast the boys all they want, if they feel like it.

All around, they’re kind of a mediocre group haha

3. Nagisa, Kayano, Maehara, Kataoka, Ritsu

Woah I LOVE this combination of students

I couldn’t help but add Ritsu here hehe. I also like the idea that she’s kind of attached to Kataoka in the beginning, considering all their moments together in canon.

Nagisa and Kataoka act like parent friends, as usual. They’re the ones who wanna work diligently and just get things done.

Maehara and Kayano are the more lenient ones haha. They’ll claim that they have low attention spans. Both Kayano and Maehara much prefer labs and getting to do cool science stuff, at least. 

Also!! It’s good that they’re in this group because they’re social types who can reach out to other groups and get help/answers from them ^^

Kataoka, sighing: “Well, Maehara, at least you have a talent for networking, I guess.”

Ritsu is in between the lenient side and the diligent side. She’s very good at science and can do her work very well!! But sometimes she gets swayed by Maehara and Kayano’s fun attitudes and doesn’t concentrate haha

Kayano keeps getting flustered whenever she’s sitting right besides Kataoka haha. Bonus points if their arms brush or she has to lean over her or something.

Also best believe there’s lots of Big-brother-Maehara and Little-brother-Nagisa moments

4. Kanzaki, Hazama, Yoshida, Muramatsu, Terasaka

So...this is basically just AU where Kanzaki joins the Disaster Squad lmfao

Hazama, Yoshida, Muramatsu, and Terasaka are already besties, we know this. They’re probably totally used to working together.

Enter Kanzaki. A newcomer.

Lmao I don’t think she’d be totally friendly at first. I think she’d be polite but distant, and barely speak up unless they were discussing.

Sgsjhakdj who thought putting the squad together was gonna lead to productivity, they’re probably gonna create so much chaos lmao

Something definitely explodes at least once.

They’re dealing with an acidic chemical and literally the whole class manages to not get burned, except for Terasaka. 

Yoshida voice: “dude you had ONE job”

After a couple classes, Kanzaki breaks out of her shell more and more, and she gets pretty chill with them.

She’s closest with Hazama, and they like to roast the boys at times. Also have random literature discussions that drive Terasaka crazy. “Can y’all not? Like this is literally physics class?”

Idk why but I really like the idea of a Kanzaki and Muramatsu friendship

5. Hayami, Okuda, Karma, Chiba, Okajima

6. Sugino, Fuwa, Hara, Sugaya, Itona

I think this is a really cute and funny group

Tbh?? None of them are very sciency lmao, so they’re that one group you always see in irl class that are very lost. And they’re super vocal about how confused they are adjkhjda

Hara takes the reins as leader but more in like a “getting everyone organized and harmonious” way

Sugino takes the charge in the actual lesson work and lab stuff, but he really shouldn’t lmao. I love the boy, he’s a talented genius in so many ways, but he leads them to chaos

finished Great Ace Attorney game 1; some scattered thoughts

((gonna be the last post on this for a while, because i REALLY need to get some other shit done for a week or two before i start game 2, lol))

* that’s... the end? of the game??  i mean, okay i know i can technically start playing #2 right away, but that wasn’t the case at the time of this game’s release, and GOD i’d be pissed if i thought that was all i was getting.  like, we still don’t know Kazuma’s mission? the importance of that Baskervilles manuscript? (and how the fuck Susato knew about it?) what made Holmes all cynical on London?  fuck’s sake, we don’t even know van Zieks’s deal yet!  normally Figuring Out The Prosecutor is the beating heart of an AA game, and here it’s like... “we’ll vaguely hint at some deal with him and Kazuma in the last five seconds” and that’s it.  (not that i’m opposed to the games changing up the formula, but none of the other major relationships are fleshed out enough to replace it... Sholmes is delightful but spends a lot of time off-stage, Susato’s charming but we just don’t know much about her, and i think those are basically the only viable candidates, lol.)

basically it feels like Takumi conceived the whole game as an extended prologue... idk, feels similar to the error he made in AA4, where he’s just plain keeping too many cards close to his chest.  that game suffered hugely from never really digging into Klavier (despite setting up the best potential plot hooks on the planet)... c’mon Takumi you don’t have to play the long game every time; this is supposed to be entertaining video game nonsense :P

er, okay, NOW THAT I’VE GOT THE COMPLAINING PART OUT OF THE WAY:

* pulling a fucking Edward Snowden in the middle of a courtroom, while the proto-GCHQ is yapping “STOP STOP” and the judge just shrugs like “well what do you want me to do about it, i can’t stop lawyers from lawyering,” was SO fun.  perfect combo of “absurd” and “badass” and “just plain fun,” which is indeed these games’ sweet spot.

* the level of polish in this game is absurd and makes it so viscerally fun to play.  the animations are delightful (in a way that, say, FE3H could stand to learn from, cough cough).  the music is fantastic.  the feel of stuff like cross-examinations, the “logic and reasoning spectaculars”, and jury examinations, is so satisfying.  reminds me of some of the joy of playing Persona 5; just a really lovingly- and carefully-crafted thing

* sholmes is, of course, fantastic.  whether he’s cheerfully blackmailing randos to book express trains, or stealing all the credit for your accomplishments like Your Neighborhood Dudebro Project Manager, or declaring life to be a joyless farce due to “not practicing violin for a long time and thus becoming bad at it, how cosmically unjust” (HIGHLY relatable bit, that), he’s just the perfect final form of Energetic Big Loud Dumb Excitable Occasional Genius

* all math departments should be renamed “LOGIC AND REASONING SPECTACULAR.”  next time i’m debugging code with a coworker i’m calling it a “LOGIC AND REASONING SPECTACULAR.”  those are so fun oh my god i just want to run out into the street and find things to LOGIC AND REASON ABOUT

* amazing how many times this games caused me to curse the concept of democracy itself.  started with that lol-worthy Reverse Twelve Angry Men in the first fifteen minutes of 1-3 and just did not stop.  god.  those juries.  the pain

* so many fun old-timey britishisms.  gotta figure out how to incorporate “what ineffable twaddle” into my vocabulary

* Iris and that eight-year-old chick in Leif Enger’s Peace Like a River should form a Club for Absurdly Precocious Preadolescent Girls.  who would win...

* can’t believe i didn’t make the Natsume-Soseki-you-know-like-the-irl-Natsume-Soseki connection until i finished playing.  amazing.  love nerds throwin in their fave novelist as an OC

Saw you've been sucked into the MMO life in the form of FFXIV and I was wondering if you had any input into the debate I've been having about what class archetypes tfw would play. I think Sam would be most likely to tank because it requires a reasonable amount of leadership and is also more of a quiet, backbone type role compared to dps. Dean seems more the type to be singularly focused on the big damage hits tbh. He also tends to take more of the charging in and fighting role in their normal life with Sam being the one reading up on everything more carefully and being his backup. Which leaves Cas as healer which may just be me projecting because I play healer/support at every opportunity but literal angel healing aside I think that sorta fits too, he cares a lot for them and tries to keep them safe and shield them as best he can in their adventures? Idk half formed thoughts please completely contradict me if you want I'm genuinely curious about other people's opinions here

If you’d asked me back when I was a WoW player I’d have fully agreed because you could only have one class per character and these are definitely the snap decisions that the fam would make when on the character screen. Dean would grab the sexiest DPS, Sam the stoutest tank especially as he’s the one who has read into the classes and strats beforehand, and Cas would ask what to do and be given the healer role because the other two in this scenario would know better about the game and sort of lump it onto him like, oh, we need a healer and you can do this.

(In my own gaming journey, this is what my friends and brother did to me, as they needed a healer to round out their party... I took druid because it was spoopy, and discovered in WoW that while you can’t change classes you can pay gold to respec your character’s role within that class... Promptly re-specced to a melee dps/tank feral druid instead of the healer one, and had a lot more fun :D)  

In FFXIV you can take all the classes on your character (which I have done, natch) and it’s a much more interesting levelling approach, especially seeing how my friends playing the game have gone when it comes to taking classes as they level and why they claim to have tried and then rejected others. It’s an enormous personality test, even for peeps like me and my brother who have all the classes up at max level, which ones we prioritised and which ones we sort of struggled with or found a bit meh. 

Hm so in the scenario that Charlie comes bursting into the Bunker demanding that she needs some friends for dungeons and raids and they’re all sitting on their asses scrolling the internet between a case, they can bloody well play final fantasy with her for a bit, let’s go for some headcanons :D Long because FFXIV has become my current obsession and I have the same in-depth feels about it as I do about SPN but I just never get to write about them with anyone... 

First off, Sam of course has deep nerdery about it and will ask Charlie a ton of questions about what the right class to play is and do the same thing as we’ve already discussed and go for Paladin (which starts as gladiator), and also take all the crafting and gathering side classes because he’s a nerd and you learn nonsense lore while doing it. He’s also in the same starting zone as Thaumaturge which transitions to Black Mage and I BET he’d be tempted to have a little safe witch!Sam emotional release on the most un-Sam class. It’s the big unwieldy spell caster whose literal class quests and stuff make fun of how you’re small and squishy and will be standing in a very bad spot debating whether to finish a long-cast spell and get hit or stop DPS and run for safety. I think he could do with the perspective and learning to be selfish either way to blow off steam from tanking and also learn to prioritise himself IRL :’D Also the paladin quest is WEIRDLY pro-cop from 30 onwards for some reason until the writers saw sense and just. stopped. doing paladin stuff and went back to the Gladiator storyline for the class quests, so idk if he’d enjoy that or start to question other things. Whatever it is he’s getting challenged XD

At 60 he grabs Gunbreaker because it sounds more cool and is thankfully way less emotionally stressful tanking as it’s entirely about being a badass bodyguard and sick flips. This is far more aspirational for Sam, especially as he could just tie a knife to a sawn off shotgun and do these moves for real in his day job. He won’t, but like with black mage, the thought that he COULD is very emotionally satisfying to him.

He might also have decided to check out scholar to see how healing is but idk if he would be able to handle Dean teasing him for having a fairy follow him around so he’d only dabble with the nerd class on the side :P  

Now, Dean can’t take ninja until level 10 or machinist (gun shooty DPS class) until 50, so his start point as DPS would either be pugilist (eeeey brass knuckle class!) or the other DPS classes to start with are Thaumaturge/Black Mage, Arcanist/Summoner, Archer or Lancer. Now. He’d probably think the first two are sissy because magic is for girls/arcanists literally only have a book as a weapon. Archer becomes bard and I think is ultimately a place he’d be very happy as it is a very supportive class to the whole party and basically the mom friend class. But I would love if he went lancer/dragoon because the level 50 class weapon is (folklore inspired name) “Gae Bolg” and every time I equip it I can’t help giggling at the name even though I know it’s a real thing and I shouldn’t. But. Like. It’s the class about waving enormous lances around. It’s got Implications, and Dean is drawn to those. 

He’d probably, however, take rogue/ninja as soon as he could because stabbing things with knives, and the class trainer is the kinda guy who’d have wild gay tension with him while they both try to boast about women to each other, were they to meet irl. Ironically, the rogue trainer (a womanising charmer) and the ninja trainer (an intense, honourable guy bad at social cues even among his own people who ends up falling from grace and choosing to stay in the vicinity of said rogue trainer) are an interesting pair of NPCs to teach Dean about where to stick knives. :) 

He’d go back and power-level dragoon once he starts Heavensward though, because Aymeric is also super intense with messy dark hair and big blue eyes that see right through you. :D He’s getting that gae bolg for him, you know? 

If they’re going to bully Cas to be their healer, he’d probably get really dedicated to the discipline especially as he can stay up all night to play and doesn’t need to take breaks to pee so he’d probably level conjurer/white mage (nature healing) and scholar (ancient book lore with a class quest which mixes ancient curses on a whole people, family drama and a bit of interspeciesish love) and then also pick up astrologian, which is good because it’s spooky star and making your own fate magic. The storyline for that is garbage in the sense that it’s really weakly written, but my favourite character randomly picks up AST in the latest expansion, and has an absolutely fucking wild subtextual romance with another character, including SPN level adopting of a random child who matches Jack in many respects, with said character. And in many respects emotionally they’re Cas and Dean but without any of the personal baggage between them specifically so they really are just chill and married, whatever else they’re stressed about (I say, dreading the next patch is going to finally bring up some questions about what is going on with them as it’s getting weirdly conspicuous while still utterly unsaid). So I would hope if Cas started projecting onto an astrologian character it would be him :P 

Cas also would get into summoner as the other branch of scholar because honestly those two classes are about as close to the random sigil drawing and reading things from books etc analogy to his own occult magic, except you can summon cool dragons and elementals to fight for you. 

they’d buy Jack a boost to 60 and he’d pick up dark knight and white mage probably just to subtly fuck with Dean 

(I am still not over Dean trying to test him to see if he was evil or not by whether he chose devil or angel cake)

Interview with Slippin’ Mickeys

Only 3 stories by Slippin’ Mickeys ended up at Gossamer, but she’s written many more stories than that. She’s also one of the few authors who posted numerous stories during the show’s original run and then again in the revival years. I’ve recced some of my favorites of her stories here, including Last Chance Falls and Currahee. Big thanks to Slippin’ Mickeys for doing this interview.

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

I would say that it does and doesn't surprise me. It surprises me that anyone would want to read something I wrote all those years ago, (only in that I was an actual teenager at the time, and had no chops at all -- I've grown a lot as a writer, and honestly have trouble reading my old stuff because I would have made much different creative decisions now). But the fanfiction that came out of the original run of the show -- from almost day one -- was so rich and varied and a lot of it so well written that I am not the least bit surprised that people want to read it today. I go back and read old favorites often, and am always thrilled to find something that's new-to-me, even if it's 27 years old.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

The first thing I think about when I think about my fandom experience are the friends I made along the way. The X-Files came up with the internet, and there was a whole new way of connecting with people that liked the things that you liked. To this day, I am good friends with many people that I met through the show back in 1997-98. When the revival came about, I dove back in, and made new, more recent friendships that are just as rich. I love the show, but I also love the people I met along the way.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

I first got into the show's online community on some random message board that I think I probably found through a Yahoo search one day in a computer lab on my university's campus. I connected with one woman from Greece named Fay that day, who invited me to join a group of women that chatted about the show after it aired on Monday nights. After the first time I hooked up with them, we talked almost daily via ICQ. Later, in the early aughts, I found the forums on Mighty Big TV/Television Without Pity, where some of the most intelligent discussion was going on. The forums were heavily moderated, and so they were always on topic, and it was just a smart, funny, great place to be.

Eventually, I started working for TWoP as both a writer and moderator (surprise! A lot of people don't know this because TWoP protected the identities of their mods so well, but I was the X-Files board mod after Jessica left!). It was my first paid writing gig and opened doors for me both professionally and personally. Two TWoP recappers were in my wedding!

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

Fanfiction opened my eyes to storytelling as a medium. I'd obviously gone to school and read books, but it opened my eyes to words to could do and be. It was a heady time. There were stories of every stripe. Short, long, canon-compliant, AU, experimental, you name it. We had such gifted writers, too. To this day, I'd almost rather read a piece of well written fanfic than a good book. Fanfic made me want to be a storyteller myself.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

It was the 'ship. God bless the ship. My first episode was Never Again, but I didn't watch again until I was sitting with my college roommate freshman year and she was like "sorry, but I have to watch The X-Files on Sunday nights." That first episode was Redux. The next week was Redux II, and by then it was all over for me. The lengths Mulder and Scully would go to for each other? And the relationship wasn't even sexual? Here were two people who loved each other. Really loved each other. Selflessly. I was SO IN.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

At first, I started reading it. This was back when you could only watch the show in reruns or on those VHS tapes that were sold in three packs that had two eps on each tape (I still have the trading cards that came with them), so after I burned through the VHS options (of which there were few), and set my VCR to tape the weekly reruns on FX, I needed MORE. I found fanfic. And in fanfic, Mulder and Scully actually like, kissed and maybe even had sex! I read everything I could get my hands on. Pretty soon, I wanted to write it myself.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

Things are tough these days. It's a hard world to live in, and politics aside, it just feels like everything is falling apart around us. When I first found the show, my life was in a bit of upheaval and I dove into the fandom to distract myself. I'm doing the same thing these days. When the show ended, I left the fandom and lived without it for about 15 years. But when the revival came (and really only after finishing season 11 -- season 10 didn't do much for me), I dove back in. I have quite a few more responsibilities these days, but when I can't watch the news anymore, I log on to XF Twitter (I use my fandom account far more than my IRL account) or Tumblr and get lost for a while. And most nights find me reading or writing fanfic before bed. When the world gets better (I'm cautiously optimistic) and the show has been off the air for years and years, will I leave again? Maybe. But for now, it's once again my happy place.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

Nothing hardcore. The X-Files is my ride or die.

Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?

I do an occasional episode or movie rewatch. Not too often, but when I'm jonesing and have 45 free minutes, I'll put one on. But I'm writing fanfic again, and I get hit with inspiration at random and odd intervals, so it's safe to say I find myself thinking about Mulder and Scully probably more than is healthy.

Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?

All the time. The old stuff, the new stuff, the good stuff. If I have five minutes and my kid is entertaining himself? I'll happy pull out an old favorite.

Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?

I'm reluctantly abstaining from this question, as I'm still active in the fandom and I know that naming favorites will hurt some feelings.

What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

Of The Eight Winds is probably my favorite. I've had a lot of fun writing AU's lately. It's a nice creative outlet, taking our favorite agents and plunking them in a totally different world.

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

Do I! I have a whole ass queue. It's frankly irresponsible.

Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

I was writing professionally before I had a baby, and I took years off to be a stay at home mom. Once my kiddo was finally in school full time, I started writing again. With the pandemic, that's for the most part on hold, as I just don't have the bandwidth to dedicate to professional work. Fanfic is easier to play with when you only have five minutes here or there, and it's also great exercise when it comes to plotting and prose, so I'm  sticking with fic for now. When the kiddos are all back in school, maybe I can start getting paid again.

Where do you get ideas for stories?

I get a lot of prompts that I just adore. And honestly, a lot of times, I'll post a stupid picture or ridiculous prompt of my own on Twitter and get dared to write it. If the idea gets stuck in my craw, I generally have to exorcise the demon.

What's the story behind your pen name?

Bad Blood had just aired and I was obsessed with it. I wanted to pay homage to it, so took Mulder's "who slipped him the mickey?" quote and ran with it. Do I regret that? Sometimes.

Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?

My husband knows and is supportive. He's a working writer, so he supports my endeavors, though I know he wishes I were doing something I could monetize. But it makes me happy, and ultimately: happy wife, happy life and all that jazz.

The friends of mine that I've made through the fandom all know and are super supportive.

As for the rest, well... I have a nom de plume on purpose!

Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?

All my newest work is on AO3. My old stuff can be found on various archives. Like the truth... it's out there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?

I'd leave it with: we're a blessed fandom. The show we stan (even with the real stinkers, there's always something to love) keeps giving, the fellow fans are all some of the smartest, sweetest, and most dedicated people out there... we've been blessed for 25 years, and I don't see that stopping any time soon.
