ok so that sounds totally rad but unfortunately even though I love viddy games I am terrible at all of them and ive heard hk is SUPER hard so I'd probs die too much to get to the cool story 😂

ouuughh yea it's pretty hard. people who do no-hit or no death runs terrify me. i dont think im ever gonna try steel soul. (steel soul is like hardcore mode, one life permadeath deal)

well, any other lore i can think of is: before she went into her deep sleep, one of the three "dreamers" i mentioned before said she would only do it if he gave her a child, so PK and her had the one character hornet together. (she's the pointy one with the pinkish red cloak) so she's half sibs with ghost (the tiny dude you play as) and the hollow knight (the really tall pointy one).

there's another character you run into every so often named quirrel. he's very inquisitive and friendly, but he's still skilled with a nail. (nails are the weapons most of the bugs seem to use, you get to upgrade yours throughout the game.) he was the apprentice to one of the other dreamers monomon she was like a knowledge keeper of sorts. he wandered out of the kingdom and lost his memory (as all bugs do apparently when they leave hallownest) and he came back later and you meet him.

my favorite place in the whole game is the city of tears, the music and the whole vibe is so melancholy and sad? like that's a huge reason i love the game, the worlds already over and everything is empty and gone. you only see and hear echoes of what used to be. :\ the city is raining perpetually and it's a deep shade of blue, the architecture is pretty too.

i like to stand in front of the statue and listen. it's very peaceful. i have the top pic as my lock screen.

bro idk the game gets me so emotional, it like touches a specific part of my soul. it's beautiful. (id highly suggest listening to the whole soundtrack on spotify or whatever platform you use. ive joked w myself if my story ever got some sort of adaption id like christopher larkin to score it. lolol as if)

one part of the game i haven't really done is the pantheon of hallownest, it's like... you fight the bosses you already have again but... worse. and harder. also the path of pain, it's a really difficult platforming uh, puzzle/map i guess. you get a special cutscene when you complete it. i haven't gotten far at all in it. 🥲 i really want to complete it though.

the bosses are pretty difficult, but once you really get the pattern down pat and get a set of charms you like to work with, it's a lot more tolerable. speaking of that, you can acquire these things called charms which give/boost certiain abilities. you have a limited amount of "charm notches" to fill. i think the ones i like best are quickslash (well, makes your nail quicker), weaversong (gives you little weaver ((spider)) buddies who can damage enemies for you, and sharp shadow. (you gain the ability to dash through things, and equipping this charm makes it so you can damage them too.)

my first round playing HK was a disaster because i have never really played these kind of platform-y boss fight games before. just getting out of the first tiny area in the flipping game was a chore. but then i worked my way up and have beaten one of the hardest bosses twice, so thats... good. i suppose..

oh another thing i should mention if you have options in the game for different endings, depending on the things you pick up, enemies you defeat, and how you fight HK at the 'end' of the game. there's technically like, six endings in total? like you can either kill HK and absorb the infection yourself, enter HK's mind and kill the radiance, have hornet assist you in killing HK and getting you both sealed inside- etc etc.

one sad little part of the game is on one area, the crystal caverns, you meet this little miner bug myla. she sings to herself while she mines, but visiting her over time as the game goes you can see her getting taken over by the infection until eventually at one point she attacks you and you have to kill her :(

one challenge you can do is this pkace called the colosseum of fools. its has 3,,, uhh,, levels i guess you can do. i've only done the first 2, ive always gotten overwhelmed right before the end of the third one. you get geo (hallownest's currency) and some other rewards, like a piece of pale ore you need to upgrade your nail. it's basically wave of enemies and the terrain changes to make things difficult, like having you jump on platforms and putting spikes on the ground.

anywho, a really good person to watch on youtube is mossbag, he does a lot of lore videos, and there's a mod called hollow knight randomizer which is reallllyy funny to me. i'm probably forgetting a lot too lololol

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and How it Handled Shadow Weaver

I want to talk about She-ra. 

She-ra and the Princesses of Power is a 5 season Netflix cartoon that premiered in November of 2018, and finished it’s 5th and final season barely a year and a half later in May of this year. The final season was extremely well received, due to its strong emotional theme, well-explained complex topics, and the resolution and redemption of one of it’s strongest characters, Catra.

But the show did not hit only home runs, especially in regard to the strong narative of abuse that had been built up in previous seasons, and that's what I'm here to talk about today.

Let's talk about how to write abusive characters in fiction, and more specifically, how She-ra failed in regard to some of those characters.

Now before I get father into this, I want to just say that the final season of She-ra was, in my opinion, a fantastic end to a wonderful series. The amount of good that show did far outweighed any gripes I have with the show itself, and I honestly think it's a wonderful piece of media, albeit one with some missed opportunities.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

She-ra is a very personal, character-driven show, with a strong emphasis on the cycle of abuse, and breaking free of said cycle. This is most strongly presented with the character of Shadow Weaver, the mother figure to the 2 main characters, Adora and Catra. Shadow Weaver is emotionally abusive to the both of them, but obviously hold Adora in higher regard than Catra, and gaslights and manipulates Adora significantly more, keeping Catra in check through physical and emotional abuse, while manipulating Adora into believing it is her duty to carry the responsibility for the both of them. If Catra is abused, it is Adora’s fault for not being better.

That’s the set up for the characters, and shapes both Catra and Adora’s actions throughout the series.

In the first season, we see Adora break free from the Horde after realizing that she is on the wrong side of the war, finding friends who she can depend on. She’s even shown an example of a healthy, non-abusive relationship in Glimmer and Angella. On the other side of the war, Catra stays with her abuser, Shadow Weaver. This shapes the conflict between Adora and Catra, as well as Catra’s motivations to take over the Horde., being that since Shadow Weaver has always lusted after power, Catra sees taking power as her only way to ‘best’ her, while still craving Shadow Weaver’s affection. This leads to Catra verbally and emotionally abusing others, most notably Scorpia.

So many of the most toxic behaviors in both Adora and Catra were learned from Shadow Weaver’s upbringing, and throughout the series, we see them struggle to undo what Shadow Weaver ingrained in them. 

But what is Shadow Weaver’s motivations for her actions, her abuse? Is she pure evil? Is it a misplaced sense of responsibility? Part of a scheme?

We know a few things about Shadow Weaver. First, she has always lusted over power. Second, she was once a magician at Mystacor, then fled to the horde when her lust of power led to her exile. Third, she has very little sense of loyalty, going wherever she feels she will be safest or in the highest position of power. She fled to the Horde after Mystacor because she knew she could gain power and influence there as Hordak’s second-in-command. She fled to Bright Moon after the Horde threatened to send her to Beast Island because she knew she could gain a foothold there manipulating Adora, and later, Glimmer. Fourth, she holds the emotions of others in very little regard unless it directly benefits her. 

So hypothetically, someone who has always put herself first, has always lusted after power and has no problem manipulating and abusing people, including children, for her own benefit is put in a situation where the side she is on is at an extreme disadvantage, as it looks near hopeless. Like, say, fighting a galactic emperor with millions of soldier clones. 

How do you redeem a character when the obvious course of action for that character is to jump ship and save herself?

Before I go into how, I should warn any of the 6 people who’ve watched both She-ra and The Promised Neverland that this next section will include spoilers for the first season of the anime.

Meet Mama Isabella. A selfish, abusive mother figure who manipulates and gaslights all the children under her care, essentially selling the children under her care to demons who kill and eat them. She emotionally abuses Ray, her biological son and the one child who discovers the plot, using him as a spy under constant threat of being ‘shipped out’ or killed and served to the demons. Ray grows up watching the other kids live peacefully, knowing that his own mother has been sending her adopted children to die, and one day it will be his turn. When some of the other children discover her plot, she breaks one of the children’s left leg, verbally taunts the other kids present, and ships out one of the children the next day as a threat to the other’s planning to escape. Her abuse was so damaging to Ray that he tried, at the age of 12 years old, to commit suicide by setting himself and the childhood home on fire as a distraction, so the other kids can escape. Overall, she is Shadow Weaver to an extreme, abusive both physically and mentally.

And her redemption is the best written redemption of any abusive parent i’ve ever read.

Reading that, you’re probably thinking I’m a psycho, but no. Here’s the thing about Isabella that makes her such a fantastic villain. She used to be one of the kids at the farm. She used to be like Ray and all the other children. The way the farms work, some of the older female children who get shipped out are allowed to survive, and are put in training to become “moms” or caretakers and enforcers at the farms. They essentially raise children to be slaughtered, as they themselves were raised. It’s horrific, and it’s the only surefire way to survive into adulthood. But the mom’s are replaceable. Isabella is under as much threat of death as anyone else, including the kids. She has what is essentially a taser implanted in her chest, that’ll stop her heart if she escapes or rebels. Ray’s very existence as someone who knows the secret of the farms puts Isabella's life at risk. One mistake, one slip up, and her life is forfeit. Essentially, it’s the kids lives or hers. 

So she justifies shipping the kids off by telling herself she can take such good care of them for their 6-12 years of living that it doesn’t even matter that they died. She is such an inherently selfish person, but she’s understandable. We understand exactly why she’s doing everything she’s doing. 

And then the kids escape, and we realize Isabella is happy for them. We realize in the last few scenes of the first season, that she’s given up hope on living after they escape. The kids, whether they realized it or not, just traded their mother’s life for their own. They outsmarted her, and thus, Isabella must die at the hand of the farm. Isabella has to accept there are no other options before doing one final act of good to help the children, untying the ropes that show where the children escaped from to throw off the demons, essentially buying the children time. 

And by this point, from the point of view of the audience, Isabella is redeemed, even though she didn’t make any heroic sacrifice, or jump in front of a gun for our heroes. She is redeemed through the small, subtle step of untying the ropes. Though that, we are shown that Isabella isn’t resentful or malicious. She doesn’t want the children to be caught. She doesn’t harbor any hope of them capturing the children and bringing them back to the farm. She doesn’t harbor any hope of living, seeing the children’s escape and her eventual death as penance for being complicit in so many deaths over the years. 

 One of the last things we hear her say in the last chapter of the escape arc is this: “I wish I could have just loved them normally.”

And by that point, we understand exactly the kind of person Isabella was, a person who deeply wanted to love, but wanted to survive more, someone who both justified and regretted the things she had done. And that regret, in itself, was her redemption.

Now going back to Shadow Weaver, we notice many of the same traits that made Isabella a good villain are present in Shadow Weaver. Someone who has always put herself first, has always lusted after power and has no problem manipulating and abusing people, including children, for her own benefit. But unlike Isabella, we never understand why Shadow Weaver is doing what she’s doing, except a general sense that she’s doing it for power. If power is truly her only motivation, she should not sacrifice herself for others, and if there is truly love for others inside her heart, there needs to be a more present way to explore it. 

We can tell she hasn’t really changed in season five due to her forcing Adora to carry the burden of the failsafe, despite the fact it could kill her. Unlike Isabella, we never feel that Shadow Weaver is being forced to do bad deeds or manipulate from an outside force or even her own bad habits. She has the freedom to be both a redeemed hero or a full-on villain, but she does.. neither. 

Up until her sacrifice.

I don’t like Shadow Weaver’s sacrifice. If you wanted her out of the picture, you could’ve had her 1. try and join Horde Prime and have him kill her, 2. Have he chipped and forced Adora and Catra to contemplate whether to save her or not or 3. Just kill her without a sacrifice to show the horror of Prime. All three would feel in character and fit well within the story, because if there is one thing Shadow Weaver isn’t presented as at any point in the story, it's a selfless person.

But instead we get... her sacrifice. First of all, it's confusing. The audience doesn’t know whether we’re supposed to feel that Shadow Weaver was redeemed or not. There is a decidedly mixed feeling in her sacrifice, where the show seems to want to be able to pull on our heartstrings, but still knows half the people watching hate this character and another quarter don’t care about her. 

And Adora and Catra also seem conflicted. The one good thing in the scene, at least for me, is that both Shadow Weaver and Catra seem to acknowledge that the sacrifice, it itself, is not selfless. Shadow Weaver is taking the easy way out, going out with a blaze of glory instead of trying to improve herself and atone for her crimes.

I honestly think in previous seasons, or even just in season 5, if Shadow Weaver were to spend more time trying to apologize and made amends to Adora and Catra, or we got some inner monologue or scenes showing how she cares for the children she abused, and feels she made mistakes, then the sacrifice would’ve worked, at least for me. But Shadow Weaver always felt like an antagonistic force, even in the final season when she was squarely a ‘good guy’. There was no point where it felt like she was sorry for her actions, and nothing that justified them.

I honestly think Shadow Weaver shouldn’t have been redeemed. And that’s what it was, redemption through death. It doesn’t work with her characterization in previous seasons, or even season 5, and it felt, for lack of a better word, cheap.

ok so. ahem. this is the hard part cuz hahahahahaha like. this is gonna get so many disagreements but,,, i actually forgave shadow weaver. YES I FUCKING KNOW I KNOW i hated her for the entirety of the show until the last 2 episodes. in The Heart Part 1, i saw all of the clues, the foreshadowing, leading to her sacrifice. and really, YES she is an abuser. both to catra and adora (i actually fucking whimpered when SW touched catra and she flinched so hard). and i know, she's not a good person. i know her sacrifice isn't some last selfless act of goodwill shit. but what it is, is something she wants to do because she realizes what a shitty person she was. we all know she favors adora, but remember that tunnel moment/face off of SW, Glimmer, and Catra in uhhh season 4 i think? when catra straight out told her that she was and always would come back to and for adora? SW didn't say yes, what she said was something along the lines of she did it bc she wanted to destroy hordak. and i really think, that it wasn't her intention to abuse those kids. when adora called her out on her horse shit in Failsafe, she was actually taken back. she is literally that character that is a firm believer of The Greater Good, No Matter What. and yes, she's power hungry, but in the end, she managed to let her desire go to sacrifice herself didn't she? she's not a hero, and she emotionally (and also physically) scars catra and adora for life, but i genuinely don't think she Knows She's Evil and Continues To Do Evil Things. her character is way more complex than that. and I KNOW that what she's done are irredeemable actions, but i can't find it in myself to hate her. and it's easy to forgive her when you're a third-party watcher.

just. this show is incredibly beautiful. it hits you in all the right feels. its a KIDS' SHOW. what the hell, but it portrays wonderful messages the right way. beautiful animation, fantastic characters, THE DIVERSITY AAAHHH, the various moral lessons and solutions to real life problems, and the OUT OF THIS FUCKING WORLD PLOTLINE.

the 1-- definitley adora POV, reminiscing on maybe what they could have been. maybe in a world where catra never redeemed herself or they never reunited and adora watched her friends pair up/get married/build lives w each other, she might realize there is a whole in her heart. a part that’s missing and cant be explained, but she feels it every time she looks at glimmer&bow.

exile -- lowkey the premise of my fic but. ‘i’m not your problem anymore/ you were my crown/ now i’m in exile seeing you out’ catra was raised to feel like she was adora’s problem to fix. she feels cast aside by her for a majority of the series etc

my tears ricochet-- “i didn't have it in myself to go with grace//and you're the hero flying around saving face//and if I'm dead to you why are you at the wake?//cursing my name, wishing I stayed//look at how my tears ricochet” tswift explained this in the doc about how no one can hurt you like your best friend turned enemy. so i think in that sense this song works from adora’s perspective--but there’s so much bitterness and anger that i feel like it fits more from catra’s POV

seven-- “love you to the moon and to saturn//passed down like folksongs//the love lasts so long” i feel like this is so young/child adora and her feelings of protectiveness over catra. their bond through trauma and abuse

august--lmaoooooo i know. ok i KNOW what the deal is. i KNOW that cardigan, august and betty are a narrative story and really there are 3 POVs--james, betty & august. but i will do with that what i please. i just see catra’s pov from this song just as much as i see it for cardigan. her losing adora/feeling like adora doesn’t want her back or will choose other ppl over her. 

this is me trying--can fit adora’s need to be everything for everyone/fear of failure--leading to burn out. also works for what i assume how catra’s redemption arc continued post s5. progress isn’t linear and this can show both of them struggling to recover from abuse

invisible string--if u strip out the imagery of taylor and her mans then sure

mad woman--i MEAN...is this not catra’s villain origin story? so often she was just poked/kicked/provoked into continuing down the dark path. not always by adora but regardless.

betty--betty betty betty. the worst thing these two have ever done is what they did to each other. i see it more catra to adora, but it can go either way. gotta admire catra’s range for fitting into the role of betty, august + james... who else is doing it quite like her?

R/ylo vs Catradora: What Do We Like About Enemies-to-Lovers Romance? (or: I Can’t Believe Someone Paid Me $6 To Write This)

I am never putting this much effort into discourse again, i dont even like discourse whoever commissioned me for this i hope this is worth ur money fdjndjdnfd

Ok les get into it yuhh. Enemies to lovers 101 

1. Power balance.

Despite everything shadow weaver says (and what catra believed), Catra and Adora are equals, it’s reiterated over and over again in the show. Even in the theme song itself where Catra and Adora are butting heads, they’re clearly intended to be framed as equals. R/ylo, in spite of all narrative attempts, never really seem to come off as equals. It is just not executed well. They tried.

imo, r/ylo was doomed the second they had literally their first conversation. there's a lot of things a pairing can do to each other during the enemies stage of enemies which falls under ‘Extremely Awful But We Are Enemies So This Is Kinda Expected’ territory. it’s why theres always attempted murder and sometimes even a bit of stabbing during this stage but this is not abusive (a word antis seem to love to throw around a lot, i’ll get into why this isn’t abusive later). however, there is a certain (but hard to define) line that if Crossed, the enemies should never have a romantic arc. kylo crosses this line in their first interaction.

the director of the force awakens, jj abrams described this scene as a “violent mind r*pe.” considering hes,, the Director, it shows that r/ylo was not at all intended to be seen as romantic. At all. (until tlj but addressing that later). (and death of the author whatever but if the author intends this to be a violent assault scene and you choose to ignore that? yikes). not to mention, the fact that this scene is an allegory for r*pe uh,, don’t ship them? also kylo is fuckin 30 and rey is 19, that only adds to the power imbalance. the line “you know i can take whatever i want” is enough to make my skin crawl. 

as this person puts it it’s not romance, this is violation, and That is what immediately established the power imbalance between them.

as a standalone scene, if rey and kylo were only meant to be enemies, this scene wouldve been fine. Its unnerving and highly disturbing, but in the context of an enemies relationship, fine. But considering how they’re being set up to be love interests, Not Very Good!! Also the dyad was an incredibly lazy narrative tool can i say that. It was.

This is such a dumb fucking sentence to write but this is a catradora/ r//ylo comparison so whatever - catra never crosses this line. Yeah she fucking ended the world and indirectly killed angella but she doesnt do anything like this to adora which is a low fucking bar for love interests im aware Okay but i am talking about their relationship as Enemies. Would like to reiterate, im not saying “do not violate ur partner” is the bar here. I am saying that violating ur Enemy is perhaps a Bad setup for a romance. there r a lot of enemies to lovers romances that work bc they dont have this set up.

2. The Fallout

“You’re nothing. But not to me.” / “Let’s be honest, all of this is your fault.”

before I talk about these scenes let’s address smth. an enemies to lovers dynamic, despite what antis say, is not inherently abusive. this is because abuse occurs in relationships that are rooted in trust (I’m aware there’s a more general definition that is used to define all forms of mistreatment in general but for the sake of this argument I’m referring to relationship abuse). For example, mean classmate who you hate tells you that you are worthless. Hurts yes, may lower your self esteem, shitty thing to do but you wouldn’t label them an abuser. If your SO however, said you were worthless, THAT’S emotional abuse. Technicality and semantics i know but they’re important distinctions to make. This is why people can’t say Catra’s actions towards Adora were abusive without taking into consideration the context of their relationship as Enemies. The antagonistic nature of the enemy relationship cannot be classified as abusive since there is no trust during the enemies stage. If Catra and Adora were in a romantic relationship during the earlier seasons then yeah that would be abuse and i sure as fuc wouldnt be a catradora blog lmao. But they were enemies! So their current romantic relationship?? Not abusive. Wow. What A Concept. Now let’s discuss these scenes.

“You’re nothing. But not to me.” / “Let’s be honest, all of this is your fault.”

On the surface? These scenes are parallels, they’re both attempts at manipulating the hero AND they’re in the final lines before the Fallout. but lets look closer at the words and the context of r/ylo and catradora’s relationships during these scenes.

at this point in time, rey trusts kylo, he just killed snoke and they fought off the ?? soldiers ?? together. Here he demeans her, tells her she’s worthless, and says but Not To Me. by doing this hes basically saying oh ur nothing but babey, i am the One who can validate u mamas lemme show u how to get that sexy self worth can u tell i stopped caring fnjdjd. But yes the implications of this line suck bc 1) kylo is saying she’s worthless and that He is the only one who sees her as having worth, 2) since rey and kylo trust each other during this scene (and this scene is also romantically coded, he basically proposed marriage), this can easily be seen as a sign of emotional abuse (isolating the victim from their friends/family, attempting to make them depend solely on the abuser’s perception of them). and bc there is trust, kylo can manipulate rey into feeling guilty. now i know the r/ylos say “read between the lines” bc he’s not saying rey is worthless he’s saying rey means something to him, he is just projecting. and yk what? i agree, i don’t think kylos intentions were malicious i actually agree w their interpretation of this line However. the impact of the words will always outweigh the intention. that may not be what kylo truly means but it’s what rey hears. an unintentional guilt trip is still a guilt trip. it’s kind of the same way someone may threaten to hurt themselves if their partner leaves them, their intentions while not necessarily evil, are still extremely harmful and is Guilting. impact > intention. 

bad. yeah catra fuckin sucks for saying this. demeaning adora. but at the point of fallout, unlike rey and kylo’s fallout, catra and adora don’t trust each other. the guilt trip here is not so much abuse as it is more classic enemy behaviour. also, unlike r/ylo, catradora are still equals. the r/ylo power imbalance kinda makes their fallout scene more gross bc he’s basically exerting power over rey,, again. but catra and adora are always on equal footing. Catra never had the upper hand on adora in the same way kylo did for rey (again referring to the torture scene and many other scenes) now lets look at rey and adora’s reactions

“Don’t do this Ben. Please don’t go this way” / “Now live with it.”

rey’s reaction is rly heartbreaking here, she trusts kylo and believes there is good in him so she begs him not to go down the path of villainy again. this scene parallels a common experience with abuse victims, they see their abuser reverting to their old ways after a period of Good, they think everything will be fine again until, regression.

adora on the other hand, doesnt trust catra and severs her ties. Unlike rey who is placed in a vulnerable position and is reluctant to give up, adora gives up on catra. If im being honest the entire fallout scene in s3 is the reason why catra’s “you have never given up not even on me” confession line didnt rly?? Resonate w me. Like the climax of s3 WAS that adora had to give up on her. Its much more complex than that i know, like adora gave up but still had hope? Idk this isnt a meta about that scene its just smth i thought id bring up. 

Ok so to summarise fallout scenes

Character A and B trust each other and A who has constantly exerted power over B and does so again to guilt B into staying. bad

Character A and B are equals but A goes way too far and the ties are completely severed. better. then they start their separate arcs and wooooo redemption

3. Accountability.  

“I did want to take your hand. Ben’s hand.” / “If you think hiding from the people you hurt is gonna make you feel better, then we’ll drop you off the nearest planet and you’ll never have to see us again.”

Yeaahhhh babey lets talk about all the reasons wrong with THISSSS. Very clever i think. Treating ben and kylo as if they were separate entities lmfaooooo. They r the same fuckin person. Ive seen it in r/ylo chatacterisations, kylo is the evil villain and ben is the soft boy. Kylo ren is his evil persona yes, its a mask he puts on to hide his true emotions (catra does the same, she has a villain persona she puts on) but to treat kylo as if he was a separate being to ben??? Uhhhhh bad. It basically relieves him of all accountability for his actions bc it ‘wasn’t him’. This isnt rey’s intention ofc, shes trying to strip that villain persona away and make him more vulnerable. But unfortunately the impact is that ppl see kylo as a separate entity, ben didnt kill han solo, kylo did, ben didnt slaughtered a bunch of ppl, kylo did. U see the problem here?

Yeah i have my issues w catra’s redemption, like most ppl i wish angella’s death was addressed, as well as catra being terrible to scorpia and her part in taking over salineas. I thought catradora’s development was for the most part, well executed but they certainly sidelined a lot of issues i wish couldve been explored in favour of catra and adora’s reconciliation. Its not rly a surprise that they would be the focus considering they are the main conflict of the show and therefore would have centre focus reconciling but yeah wish the other issues were addressed. That being said i think catra readily takes accountability for what she’s done and faces it head on (obvsly not all of it but yeah mostly what shes done to adora), i also never rly saw her redemption as a complete one, it seemed to be framed as the beginning of a lot more work to be done, but shes getting there. 

Also kylo is a grown ass man who commits murder as his first act on screen and catra (while she did horrible things and was an awfully toxic person) is trapped in a vicious cycle of abuse and is humanised pretty much every season. Choose ur fighter lmao

people have been talking about how this season showed that what catra really wants deep down is not power over adora, but her love. i felt like it was true intuitively but i’ve been wondering HOW after everything we’ve seen catra do, and i just had a revelation ok so

in 3x05 when adora’s like “is that what you really want? to rule the world?” and catra kind of stutters “yeah obviously... isn’t that what you want too?...” the voice acting and the animation seem to imply that she was lying (i’m posting the clip for reference). 

everytime catra talked about them ruling together in season 1, i assumed it was catra’s idea because of how she was shown to resent being second-place to adora in the horde. but i don’t think catra is as ambitious as they made her out to be in the first two seasons.

if you need more convincing on this: as @gay-for-applebees pointed out here, scorpia offered her the possibility of ruling in the crimson waste, but when catra realized she would have to let go of adora, she lost all interest in it. and @spiribia made the point here that in the “perfect world” au catra was happy even though adora was her boss and she wasn’t in a position of power because she had everyone’s love and respect. also, remember in 1x01 Catra was totally thrilled about Adora’s promotion--until she realized she wasn’t allowed to go with her. And in Promise when Catra admits she always wanted to be a force captain, what that truly stemmed from was just her wanting to earn parental love. so all of this points towards catra not actually caring about having power (an important difference between her and shadow weaver... but i digress alsjdlfs).

so why would catra say that ruling the world was something her and adora had always dreamed about if it wasnt true? well, note how she always says “we,” never “i.” because Catra didn’t care about ruling--she just thought that Adora did.

before i go on let me say that adora’s ambition was 100% a product of shadow weaver’s brainwashing. so that’s what i mean when i talk about her, and it’s also  what makes all of this so unbearably tragic. ok anyway

in 1x05 catra says becoming a force captain, a prestigious leader in the horde, was "the thing [adora] wanted most in the world.” she saw how hard adora had worked for that promotion and she assumed adora wanted to rule someday.

so i think that catra’s “dream” of ruling alongside adora was really just an attempt to satisfy adora’s ambition, not her own. LISTEN ARE U LISTENING catra was afraid that adora wouldn’t care about her unless she was willing to act as adora’s side kick. so what we see in 3x05 is the relationship dynamic catra had always imagined between them... it wasn’t ideal but she was happy as long as she was with adora, as long as she had her attention and protection. it didnt matter if they weren’t equals. catra was okay with that. she was okay with trading her agency for adora’s affection.

that’s not a small sacrifice. that’s everything. so when adora left her, to catra it was basically like she was spitting on catra’s devotion to her. 

i dont know if this is making sense i hope it is because like even as i type this i’m seeing catra’s character in a completely new light. i used to think she resented adora growing up because she was ambitious and felt like adora’s success was indirectly responsible for her abuse. but really, we watched catra’s thirst for power develop out of NOWHERE after adora left, with no intrinsic basis (it was partly to protect herself, partly to demand adora’s respect, and partly to get revenge).

so coming back to this video yall this shit is breathtaking... catra is hiding the way she really feels about adora, wrapping it up in this fake idea of “oh, i want to rule, and you want to rule, and we’re buds right so why don’t we just rule together?” and adora challenges her on that, asking what it is she really wants. and catra can’t very well be like “idk marry you maybe?” so she sticks with her lie WHILE AT THE SAME TIME kind of reaching out to adora, seeking her own answers. the way catra asks “isn’t that what you want, too?” it’s almost like a feeble attempt to break the cycle of miscommunication, almost like she’s praying for adora to just be like “honestly? i’d be happy anywhere if you were there with me.”

immm kinda unsure how to feel about them tbh. i think hordak’s redemption was much more well done than i expected but it definitely doesnt completely absolve him of the things he did. he was kinda glossed over at the end which like ok i understand they wanted to focus on the best friend squad but i do wish they had mentioned it beyond mermista’s one line because he did a lot of damage to the planet and abused catra, adora, and the rest of the horde kids and... didnt really apologize. like yes he tried to kill prime but the fact that he was responsible for the horrible environment that catra adora and the rest of the horde kids grew up in wasn’t acknowledged, nor was his emotional manipulation/abuse of catra or the general damage he did to etheria. he was shown to be on level with shadow weaver in the first few seasons and the fact that so little time was spent on him in the end of the show kindaaaa idk. i rlly dont know how to feel about entrap/dak fdsfghj i just kinda wish horak was acknowledged as someone who hurt people

ok so like i have a LOT of ocs, some i use more then others, so for the sake of brevity, ill list my faves for now;

I’ll start with the god ocs;

Cael-- Cael is the main god, the one most well known and worshiped. Hes youthful but has an old soul, and the Great Sunder thrust him into his position. Hes the god of dusk, life, the wind and sky. The Sun and Moon left the world, so he is the soul source of light, but their “day” is a short dusk, otherwise its a world of eternal night. Hes very kind, but troubled. He wears an amulet his mother gave him long ago, and its his most important possession.

Noctis is next, I dont have an updated picture on him yet though oof. Hes the god of order, magical study, secrets and rest. He is most revered by mages and those seeking magical pursuits, and is most likely to speak for Cael, who is still young in terms of a god, and Noctis often takes the brunt of god hood leg work. He is stoic and proper, ad ensures that the new world is running smoothly as it heals and settles from the Great Sunder.

Now we have Syrilium, or as hes better known, the Weaver. The Weaver is a young god as well, and was asleep for a very long time. He is now the deity of dreams, and the source of the Great Sunder, changing magic as we all know it forever. His influence and raw power surged forth upon his awakening, and Noctis helped to soften the blow to the world, but many things were still lost. (if you want to know how the magic system works btw, im focusing on ocs for now in this post XD) The Weaver is called thus by the Dream Elves, for he weaves transpires of dreams, and can even make dreams into physical tapestries. He is kind, soft spoken, and very shy. Still learning how to be awake.

Nithernal is next, also known as Nith, goddess of self love, care and magical energy. She’s made of pure night magic, and is very old. She sleeps a lot, and is very physically fragile, and shes often kept safe in her caverns and by the other gods. Originally her night realm was separate from the Drown (EverDrown is the name of my world) as she had made it herself, but after the Great Sunder, her night realm became one with the waking one, so dreams and reality (and magic) are melded together and far more accessible. She is kind, gentle, and wears her heart on her sleeve. (she has a lot of lore too if you wanna hear about that my goodness)

Then we have Lady of the Void, or just Lady Void, very little is known of her just yet. Shes a work in progress~

I had more gods in the past, but they have now either gone MIA, or are in a form of deathlike slumber. (Many think the Old Gods have died, but some of their slumbering giant bodies are still laying about; others have taken on disguises and travel)

Here are some of my other ocs in no particular order

Ater- Old Vampire god, no longer active. Location is unknown.

Gelu- Old god of finery, friendship, and ice mages. A woman of her likeness has been spotted roaming old trails. 

Hebes- Old God of the sun. Sleeping.

Darkpool- Old god of heroes, lycanthropes, and shadow magic. Also a notorious Realm Jumper. He could be anywhere. But hes certainly not here.

Som- Old God of demons, strength, justice. She slumbers deep below the earth. Don’t drink her blood, no matter what the cult tells you.

Archivist- Old God of knowledge. She’s still active, but no one has seen her in centuries. Only her faithful Thought and Memory creatures venture out from her grand hidden library. And they will tell you nothing.

Arva- A Brigand (Brigand is the name of the race, they aren't actually criminals XD) A plant being made of magic. Made by Nithernal to be exact! Hes very sweet and fragile just like the rest of his kind. Essentially a sentient flower that lives on moonlight.

Aithlin, and his brother Myrrh- Dream Elves. Aithlin is a young elven youth whose always wanting to go out and seek adventure, whilst his brother is traditional and gets annoyed by his naivety. Dream Elves grow antlers, and it shows age. Myrrh has a full rack, Aithlin is just getting his in.

Iett- A strange demon or spirit of Silence. Some seek her aid for focus and accuracy, though shes not a formal god. it is common to see hunters and warriors have a small idol of her in their home.

That’s... just a few XD I don't want this too get too long oof, because i have several dragon ocs, demons, and elves (glass elves, wood elves, Dream elves) I have this all existing in one world. What you should know is im super indulgent with what i come up with, and its very high fantasy. I’m sorry if its so vague but thats the gist XD

She Ra! This show was amazing! (Long post)

Omg! I stayed up until 4.00am to binge watch the last season of She Ra. I'm gutted that before I put it on I opened Twitter for a second and the Catradora kiss was ruined for me! 😞

But what a bloody season! What a show! I grew up watching the original She Ra and the original He Man. Mine and brothers favourite movie was "The Secret of the Sword" (the He Man and She Ra film where she is first introduced). That show was brilliant for its day, it depicted strong women who didn't need men to save them. Plus She Ra was so much better than He Man, she could heal people, talk to animals and turn her sword into anything she liked! She also had a flying unicorn that could talk! What else could a girl want in a show?

When I heard this was going to be revived I was a bit apprehensive, especially after the failed He Man reboot and the failed Thunder Cats one. (Dont even get me started on that monstrosity they call a reboot! At least the anime version was cool).

I decided to give the show a watch, convincing myself that is was for nostalgic purposes only, and wow! I could not stop watching it!

This version is great, because it wasn't trying to be the same as the original. The basic premise was the same but the story and the characters were fleshed out so much more. The relationships between the characters was just something else. I loved how they de-aged them, so it was teenagers and not adults this time.

Making Adora and Catra best friends? I loved it! The fact that this friendship/enemies story between the two became the heart of this show was something else. The original series had Catra being jealous of Adora and becoming a force Captain after Adora left but that was the extent of their relationship.

I love how Hordak wasn't even all the fussed about conquering Etheria. He had so much more depth to him than the original one did. OG Hordak was a bumbling idiot who laughed evilly and could turn himself into rockets and canons. The most interesting thing about him was he used to be Skeletors mentor. The very idea or Hordak caring for anything or anyone other than imp was unthinkable. This Hordak has a tragic back story, he's had it rough, he has a specific goal and conquering Etheria seems to become less and less important to him. He's even able to form a close friendship with Entrapta.

Shadow Weaver being a maternal figure for Adora was something the original had but wasn't mentioned much at all. The fact that she was the foster mother of both Catra and Adora and favoured Adora to the point of obsession in getting her back gave the back story so much more. The fact that Shadow weaver is more connected to the other characters and has her own back story and then a redemption, I love it.

I also love how the relationship between Shadow Weaver and Catra was really explored. It made Catra so much more than just a boring villain of the week when you see the neglect and abuse she went through. How her only solice was Adora, you can totally understand why she feels broken when Adora leaves everything they both know. But I also love how even though she was villian she kept her sense of humour and she just couldnt get over Adora no matter how hard she tried to.

Glimmer? So much more character than the original. Her relationship with her mother was brilliant. Angela was so funny and I was gutted when she died. In the original it was Angela that had been gone a long time and had to be rescued by He Man and She Ra to be reunited with Glimmer. Her father didn't show up, but it was rumoured that a mysterious red knight who Angela thought she knew could have been him.

Bow? This bow was amazing with all of his tech and his sass and his sensitivity. The original bow was OK but he wasn't the character you watched the show for. I'm also glad they didnt have him pining for She Ra like the OG did. The fact he has two gay dads was amazing! I do wish they had kept Kowl though.

Swift Wind is hands down by favourite side character! That horse is so sassy he just make me crack up no matter what he does. I'm glad they did him justice, because when I was younger I always wanted a white horse and to call it Spirit like the Original She Ra and so that meant a lot that they just improved on him.

I love how everyone knows who Adora is, there is no secret identity.

The fact that the princesses have so much more personality and backstory than their OG counter parts did is brilliant. My absolute favourite is Mermista!

Scorpia? I love how she wasn't just a bad guy like her OG counter part was. This character is so much more interesting. She goes on her own journey, she doesn't even seem to grasp what she's doing half the time because she is just desperate to have friends. She never gave up on her friendship with Catra, even when Catra didn't want her she was still there. I love that.

Sea Hawk? Omg! One of my favourites! A far cry from his OG character. I'm so glad they didnt have him and Adora as a couple like the OG did! "ADVENTURE!!"

This show had everything! So much more humour than the OG one. It allowed violence as well which is something the OG one didn't allow. If you ever watch it you'll notice She Ra doesn't hit any one who is alive (Robots don't count) she would beat them in ways they couldn't be harmed, like she ra throwing into mud or water. But this? This show has some ass kicking going on!

The shape of the characters is also brilliant. I love how Glimmer is slightly bigger than than the other characters. How we have them in all shapes and sizes. The OG characters were always drawn using the same template. The footage was also constantly reused in every episode.

Now for the change I love the most! The LGBTQ rep! This would have been unthinkable when the OG show was on! No one would have dared suggest it. (Although He Man always had gay under tones, especially after the live action movie happened). But when I was watching this show being gay wasn't something people discussed and certainly not with children. The most we saw was the occasional gay couple on a soap. For me it was Tony and Simon in Eastenders and Zoe Tate on Emmerdale. But a children's show? NEVER!

I wish I had had this show when I was a kid. It took me until i became an adult to admit that I liked women. If I had had this show and these characters in my life perhaps things would have been easier. It would have helped me understand myself better. Unfortunately for the time it still would have been frowned upon and even though my family are much more accepting after a lot of education I don't think I would have been allowed to watch this show this way when I was a kid.

But kids now are so lucky! They are exposed to the LGBT every day. It's everywhere! It isn't hiding anymore, it's so much more accepted. Even when I was a teen at school a lot of gay people were still in the "we know you exist but we don't want to know about it" phase.

This show handled it so well!! There was no coming out story line, no trying to figure out why they had these feelings. It was treated the exact same way any hetro storyline would be. The fact that there was a canon lesbian couple from the get go said it all. As the seasons went in they progressed and gave us Bows gay dad's. They had Adora crushing on women. They didn't even try to hide what they were doing with Catra and Adora. I love how this last season gave more screen time and story to Spinereella and Netalia rather than them just "being there". It was just handled so well. None of the characters battered an eye lid at the thought of Adora and Catra as a couple. I'm just gutted its over. They even gave us an epilogue!!

Last point, maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I feel like they didn't need to put Glimmer and Bow together. I always adored how they had this wonderful best friend relationship between a boy and girl that didn't need to end in them falling in love. I never saw them as a couple, just best friends. Plus I always saw Bow as asexual.

Catradora reminds me so much of Supercorp from Supergirl. It gives me hope that maybe the show will be brave and give us a canon Lena and Kara. But I won't hold my breath 😅

(catch me looking like a clown tho when catra heals and their relationship starts being amazing and they start dating canonically)

and honestly? i dont even see scorptra working out at this point either. scorpia has held catra at this extremely high pedestal that catra couldnt possibly live up to forever. sure she pulled some badassery in the crimson wasteland but she was at her lowest point. she has weaknesses. scorpia idolizes catra too much, and catra tends to fall into the same pattern of manipulation that shadow weaver used. catra could possibly have a redemption arc after this season, though.
