1. This isn't about anyone specific; it's about a general trend. If you are a custom owner and what I have to say doesn't apply to you for whatever reason - your custom is private, you sell it for cheap, you give copies away, you make your public custom accessible for all walks of players instead of just the rich/other owners - then this post isn't about you. Same with if your friend is a custom owner and this post doesn't apply to them.)

2. Also, I support the existence of private customs. This is about exorbitantly priced customs available for potatoes, and custom trade only customs.

3. I know real life inequality is worse than fake petsite inequality. But since we've all decided to care enough about a fake petsite to gather here on Tumblr to complain about it, I'm going to talk about fake petsite inequality anyway. If you're here to tell me it's not that deep, consider you are also invested enough in DV to come here and discuss the goings-on - so I feel comfortable discussing them too.

With that out of the way.

I am really getting tired of this trend where we can only talk about flaws within the custom system by first going out of our way to insist that we only hate the system, we don't blame any custom owners, the entirety of fault lies with staff, etc. 

I understand why we as non-owners do it; we worry custom owners will get defensive and refuse to support our efforts to make the system more fair, or they will get their feelings hurt and make their customs entirely unavailable out of spite, and we don't want to take the opportunity away from people who currently can access them, or we don't want to be called entitled, even if what we are talking about is more about a system that favors 2% of users, not about whether we have a "right" to individual customs. And even when we make these disclaimers, half the time, custom owners come to us and complain that we didn't make enough of a point to only blame staff, or the words "rich user" hurt their feelings, or they don't like our "us vs. them" attitude. Even if we are just describing, in the plainest terms, the reality of what is happening on site.

The fact of the matter is - one, yes, the main problem here is that DV has made its custom distribution system an absolute nightmare. I won't get into that because there are posts all over DV and posts all over this blog about why that is. We've all read them. If you don't think there's a problem, either you're naive, you're a beneficiary of the system, or we fundamentally disagree on how the site economy should be structured to the degree that neither of us will be able to change the other's mind. However... custom owners are not helpless.

Custom owners have the right to price their customs however they like - therefore custom owners who choose to charge hundreds of thousands of potatoes per copy, up to a million potatoes in some cases, are making that choice. Staff is not making them. Other users are not making them (a custom owner who spitefully hikes up the price because they're angry about how people view their custom isn't being made to do anything, they're choosing to take out their anger on a few people on all their potential customers). The same goes for custom owners who only allow other custom owners to custom trade for copies. They don't have to make that the sole way to get their custom. They want to.

And if those owners offer lip service, saying they know the system is wrong, they don't like it either, they want it to change, they think the system excludes people - my question is, why not be the change yourself? Why wait for staff to, say, ban custom4custom trading, impose price caps, whatever it is that you tell people you think they should be doing? (I'm not speaking out for or against any of those suggestions, they are examples.) Why do you need to be forced to offer your customs fairly if you believe all users should have access to copies of non-private customs?

Yes, the source of the problem is staff and the system they put into place. Yes, we should spend our energy encouraging staff to make changes. No, we should never, ever harass, stalk, dox, or abuse individuals with customs (making a post about how custom owners, in general, treat non-custom owners is not abusive; I am talking about individualized, targeted abuse). No, bothering individual custom owners is not the way to get a fix.

But. But. Being allowed to do something unfair doesn't mean you should. 

And I wish we could admit that custom owners who still don't see the problem with custom trading or 200kp+ customs are knowingly being unfair to everyone else.

We've all admitted that it was wrong of people to exploit the Irining glitch to get up to a dozen customs each, even though the glitch was the fault of the staff, and the fact that they got to keep the customs instead of being refunded was the fault of the staff. We've still been able to come together and admit, "After that person got two or three customs at once, they should have realized something was fishy and stopped. Or they should have given away or sold some of their copies to give other people a chance."

So why can't we admit "You may be allowed to exclude non-owners from access to your custom, but it isn't right" or "You may be allowed to charge 500kp for your custom, but it isn't fair"?

Dusk Till Dawn - Part 2

Peter Parker x Reader

Summary: Peter wants to help you but he doesn’t trust your new friend.

Warnings: Swearing (most likely), angst, jealousy,

The second Peter felt your presence, he knew that something was wrong. He could feel your emotional distress without even having to see you. It was strong and he couldn’t figure out what had caused it. He knew that he wasn’t the only one who was worried about you. 

Your dad had called him last night thinking that the two of you had fought. Apparently, you refused to come out of your room since coming back from the mission and you refused to talk to anybody. In short, the Avengers though you were avoiding them.

That was another thing that pissed you off. They ignore you for six months and then have the nerve to say that you were the one avoiding them? Well, technically you were. The only person you’ve spoken to was Steve, but that was just because he ambushed you on your way to the kitchen in the middle of the night. 

He also assumed that you and Peter had a fight or something. He had told you that if you needed anybody to talk to, he’d be happy to listen. You weren’t sure where any of this was coming from. He had been one of the many people who had ignored you for so long.

Whatever it was that you were feeling, Peter felt it too. All day, Peter couldn’t concentrate on a single thing his teachers were saying. It was like the only thing his senses could focus on was you. At one point, it had gotten a bit embarrassing when he didn’t answer his teacher right away, causing Flash to make some smart-ass comment about something. He needed to talk to you right away.

If only Eloise Day hadn’t beaten him to it.

“Does your dad know that you know?” Ellie asks. You had told her about what you had found out about yourself from the USB that you stole from Hydra.

“No. Not yet at least. I just can’t believe he’d keep something like this from me my whole life.” You sigh as you shove your school books in your locker. Yes, you were pissed. Your dad told you that your mom was a summer fling who died giving birth to you. 

“You had a right to know,” Ellie tells you as she places a comforting hand on your arm. You just wish that people would be honest to you. The only two people who you can really trust were Ellie and-

“You had a right to know what?” Peter unexpectedly asks, causing you to almost drop your Science book. Peter catches it before it hits the ground and places it neatly in your locker.

“It’s nothing,” you say. You trusted Peter, but this wasn’t something you wanted to tell him. You knew that he would try to defend your dad and make up lame excuses. Peter idolized your dad and you also didn’t want to take that away from him.

“Hey, Peter,” Ellie looks at him grudgingly, as though daring him to push the topic further.

“Hi,” he says half-heartedly. Right now, he cared about you a lot more than some random girl who he barely knew. “You should come over today. May says she misses you.”

Peter knew that it was just an excuse to get you alone. Yeah, May really did miss you, but Peter was really starting to worry. You were always open to him, so the fact that there was something you weren’t telling him on top of your awful mood was causing him to freak out a little. Was it something he did?

“I don’t know.” Peter noticed your hesitation. “I’m not feeling that great.”

“It’s okay.” It most definitely wasn’t okay. You lied to him. Peter always knew how you were feeling and he knew that you weren’t sick at all. “Maybe another time?”

“Yeah.” Peter nodded his head as he watched you walk away with Eloise. 

Ellie had insisted on you coming to her house. She said that she wanted help on her Chemistry homework, but you knew that she was actually curious to know more about what you found out. If Ellie really was as smart as you knew she was then there was no way that she needed help with homework.

As usual, her parents were working late. You’ve heard stories of Ellie’s parents, but you’ve never  actually met them. From what you knew, they always worked and Ellie was always alone.

“So if Tony Stark isn’t your real dad, then who is?” Ellie sat with her legs crossed looking at you curiously. 

“I wish I knew. The only information I found about who my real parents are is my mom’s name.” You couldn’t really find any pictures of her, but you really liked her name.

“What was her name?” Ellie was a good friend. It’s not like she was going to go around telling people about this. 

“Christine Y/L/N” 

“What?” She looks at you with an expression that you couldn’t quite read.  “I think I know someone who might have known your mom.”

“Really?” You sat up giving her your undivided attention. Could she really help you find out more about your past?

“Yeah, but I’m not a hundred percent sure.” You followed her to her parent’s room where she dug through one of the suitcases that were under the bed. “Do you mind doing a DNA test?”

“Um... I don’t know.” She finally found what she was looking for You eyed the syringe warily.

Bucky had one told you to never give your blood to anyone unless it was a life or death situation and even then you were supposed to be cautious about it. Steve and Nat were quick to agree but this had to be an exception, right? This was important to you and they would have to understand.

“Come on. It’s just me. You trust me, right?” Ellie prompted.

“Okay, just do it quick.” You hated needles. After a few seconds, she was done but there was another problem.

“There, um...” She looked around for band-aids. You ended up having to use a tissue temporarily until Ellie came back with the box. “These are the only band-aids I have.”

The band-aids were all Avenger themed. You pulled out a band-aid and put it on. It was blue with tiny shields all over it. It was actually kind of cute.

“Thanks.”

“So what’s Parker’s deal?” Ellie asks. You didn’t look like you knew what she was talking about so she continues. “He looked like a lost puppy when you turned him down earlier.”

“Well, we’ve sort of been best friends since we met,” you say remembering the day you met. It was in that airport in Germany. 

“Weren’t you two fighting each other when you met?”

“Sort of.” You got ready to tell her.  “I was fighting him but he wasn’t fighting me.” While you fought Peter, all he did was dodge and defend. Not once did he throw a punch your way. You kind of already knew Peter, but you had never really spoken to him until that day. You figured that Tony had asked him not to hurt you or something like that.

“Did you know that he actually saved my life that day?”

“How?” She scrunched her nose in confusion. You weren't oblivious to the fact that Peter and Ellie did not like each other at all. Either way, Ellie was your friend and you were excited to talk to her about this.

“Well, the whole fight has pretty much escalated out of control and a giant bus flew at me but Pete swung in and grabbed me before the bus hit me.”

“Gwen is a lucky girl,” Ellie stated as she got back to doing her homework. 

“Gwen?” What the hell was she talking about?

“Yeah. They obviously like each other. I wouldn’t be surprised if he asked her to homecoming.” 

You just now realized that Peter and Gwen actually have been spending a bit more time together than usual. She started eating lunch with Peter, Ned, and Harry around the time that you started eating lunch with Ellie so she wouldn’t be alone.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” You didn’t want to think about Peter and Gwen together. “I should probably go home, but it was nice hanging out with you.”

“I like hanging out with you too.” 

Ellie had offered to drive you home, but you figured that you needed a bit of alone time. Unfortunately, you figured you should have taken her up on that offer. On the subway, you ended up siting next to a man and woman who couldn’t control their pet chicken. You finally made it back to the tower a little after ten.

“Y/N, where have you been?” Pepper asks. You couldn’t find it in yourself to hold any grudge against her. She, although often busy with running Stark Industries, had always treated you like her own daughter. You were sure that she would have told you the truth if she hadn’t worked for you dad for so long. 

“I was at a friends house,” You say. Suddenly, your dad walks in and you could feel the anger seeping back into you.

“Oh. There’s pizza in the fridge,” he casually says as though he hadn’t realized you were gone for so long. 

“Thanks,” you say bitterly, although nobody seems to have noticed.

“Nice band-aid,” he says after spotting the Captain America themed band-aid.  “What happened?”

“Nothing. Just an accident.” He hummed as he scrolled through his phone. 

“I think Peter is waiting for you in your room.” Your anger vanished a little after hearing that Peter was in your room.

“Why?”

“Something about studying for a physics test.” You knew that was a lie. You share five classes with Peter, Physics was one of them, and there was no Physics test to study for.

“Okay.” Your dad and Pepper walked off (probably to talk about that dude who keeps spreading rumors about SI), and you went to your room. 

“Hey,” you say. Peter was sitting on the edge of your bed and you knew that he was expecting you. He was wearing his Spider-Man suit, except he was holding the mask in his hands. You didn’t like the accusatory look he was giving you one bit. 

“I thought you said you weren’t feeling well,” Peter says. You felt bad about lying to him, but you knew that he would want you to talk about what was bothering you. You weren’t ready to talk to him about it and even if you were you weren’t sure if you should.

“I’m not.” Technically, in an emotional sort of way, you weren’t feeling well. 

“You were at Eloise’s house.” You sigh, knowing you were probably going to be lectured. “Y/N something is bothering you. You know you can talk to me right? About anything.”

“I know. It’s not that important.” Again, you lied. You loved talking to Peter, but you really didn’t want to talk to him about this one specific thing.

“You do know that I know when you’re lying.” Damn spidey-senses. 

“You wouldn’t understand.” Peter stood up and you had a feeling that he would start pacing any second.

“You don’t know that.”  You knew that Peter wouldn’t understand. He knew exactly who he was. You thought you knew yourself, but your whole life has been one big lie. You weren’t who everyone thought you were.

“Pete, can we please talk about something else?” 

“Fine.” Peter was most likely going to want to talk about it again, but he understood that now probably wasn’t the right time for you. “Do you want to go on patrol?”

“You haven’t already?” Peter usually goes on patrol immediately after school gets out. You were surprised that he hadn’t yet.

“No, I was waiting for you.” You nod your head as you feel a sigh blush creep up your cheeks.

“Okay, just let me get changed first.”  Peter remains standing facing you. “You can turn around.”

“Oh- right.” Peter awkwardly coughs as he turns around. 

“So how was school?” You find your suit stuffed in the corner of your closet. It sort of reminded you of Tris Prior from Divergent, except your outfit was more flexible and mostly bullet proof. You really needed to upgrade it against whatever it was that comes from stupid space guns. Your side was still a little bit sore, but it wasn’t anything you couldn’t handle.

“A pain,” Peter scoffs. “Your emotions were really strong today.”

“Sorry.” You hadn’t realized that Peter’s senses would pick up on your emotions. You felt bad that it affected him so much.

“You have nothing to be sorry about,” he says softly. “I just want to be there for you.”

“I’m done.” You say. 

Going on patrol with Peter was nothing short of refreshing. You missed spending time with him and it was the perfect distraction to everything you’ve been feeling up until this point. 

There wasn’t a lot going on tonight other than one purse thief and a few shoplifters. You and Peter mostly hung out reminiscing about old times. It made you realize how while some things change too fast or too much, some things never do. Peter had the same brown eyes you loved. His laugh was still music to your ears. He was still the same person who saved you all those years ago. 

Peter knew that he should have gone straight home after dropping you back off in your room, but for some reason he found himself wandering around in the park. It was like he needed to be there but he didn’t know what for.

After a while of mindlessly walking around, he sat down on a bench. He quickly stood back up again when he saw an all too familiar face. Eloise Day stood waiting not that far from where Peter was. She didn’t see him, but he definitely saw her. 

A black van pulled up right next to her. It looked more like an old worn down ambulance that was painted black and rusting. Peter was ready to swoop in in case she was in danger but something told him she wasn’t.

A man exited the vehicle and shared a few words with your friend. She handed him something and in return she was given a small folder. Peter could instantly tell that whatever this was wasn’t good. He wanted to tell you, but would you believe him?

The Real Annabelle

To most the Annabelle doll looks like a harmless Raggedy Anne doll compared to her onscreen counterpart, but don’t let appearances deceive you, there’s a lot more to Annabelle that meets the eye.

It was originally given as a gift to a young nurse from her mother on her 28th birthday. She was thrilled and brought it back to her apartment that she shared with another fellow nurse where it sat on the sofa as a cute decoration. It wasn’t long before they started having paranormal experiences. The two noted that the doll seemed to move around the room on her own. On one instance, the owner left her on the sofa and left for work, only to come home and find Annabelle lying on her bed with the bedroom door shut. The two women would also find notes around the apartment with “help me” written on them. What was strange was that the notes were written on parchment paper, which they didn’t keep in the home.

It only seemed to escalate from there. One day while one of their boyfriends was over, he heard rustling in one of the rooms. Believing it to be a burglar he checks it out, but there’s no one there. However, he found Annabelle lying face down on the floor. Suddenly, he felt a seering pain across his chest and when he looked he saw bloody claw marks.

After, the two women invited a medium over and held a séance. She told them that the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a deceased child called Annabelle, whose body had been found earlier on the site where the apartment was built. She also claimed that the spirit was harmless and just wanted to be loved. The two nurses felt bad and allowed the doll to stay.

The Warrens, who would come to own Annabelle themselves, believed otherwise later stating, “Spirits do not Possess inanimate objects like houses or toys, they possess people. An inhuman spirit can attach itself to a place or object and this is what occurred in the Annabelle case. This spirit manipulated the doll and created the illusion of it being alive in order to get recognition. Truly, the spirit was not looking to stay attached to the doll, it was looking to possess a human host.”

The Warrens said the case was a typical demonic haunting and ordered an exorcism of the apartment. They then took Annabelle to the spot where she now resides in The Occult Museum in Connecticut. However, it didn’t stop there. While driving the doll to her new residence, the Warrens refused to take the highway in case the doll still had power. But it didn’t matter, the brakes either stalled or failed and they even nearly ended up in bad accidents. After dousing the doll in holy water, all problems with the car seemed to cease.

When they arrived home the placed Annabelle in Ed Warren’s study, but she wouldn’t stay there for long. She would often move around the house as she did in the nurse’s apartment. They had a case specially made for the doll which was inscribed with the Lord’s Prayer and Michael’s Prayer. Since being locked up, she hasn’t moved again, although that didn’t stop her from causing more havoc.

A priest that visited the home picked up Annabelle and discounted all the claims of demonic activity surrounding her. On his way home, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident.

Years later, a visitor to the Warren’s Occult Museum tapped on the glass and laughed at people who believed that the doll was possessed by a demon. On his way home, he lost control and crashed his bike headlong into a tree. He was killed instantly.

The doll has since been featured on many paranormal tv shows and was even brought to Zack Bagan’s paranormal museum in Las Vegas where he sat the doll on his lap during a Ghost Adventures Halloween special.

I would like to go to the Occult Museum. Maybe this summer? It would be a couple hours drive for me at the most. I’ll keep you guys updated.

About/Information

I write because I lead a lonely life with very little human interaction.

I write so that I can feel what friendship and love feels like, so that I can feel like I’m a part of something bigger.

I write to escape the problems that plague me in real life, to get to hang out with people and characters that have impacted my life.

I write because it makes me happy and helps me cope with the life I’ve been given.

When I write, I get to insert myself into those worlds and feel a deep connection with its inhabitants, forming bonds of friendship and love that I can’t make in real life.

For me, it’s the same as watching anime or watching a movie and getting engrossed in the story. I’m super sensitive and empathetic, so I can feel what other people experience, whether they be real people or those you find within anime.

You can call it pathetic, and a lot of people don’t understand Fanfiction and find it weird, but for me, it’s part of my life and plays a huge part in my happiness.

I pour my heart and soul into my writing, so sharing it with others is quite nerve-wracking, but at the same time, I couldn’t imagine writing just to keep them on a hard drive somewhere.

I believe that in today’s society, everyone gets triggered over everything because they are bored and have nothing better to do with their lives. While I do my best to label my stories with warnings if I think it might have legit triggering content, if you find something to be triggering and I haven’t labeled it as such, please let me know. I will review it and see if I can agree with it being a genuine concern.

A lot of my writing features subjects that I have experience with. These are the things I consider to require a trigger warning:

Mentions of suicide/suicide attempts.

Self-harm.

Abuse, both mental and physical.

Alternatively, I refuse to write about rape/non-consensual sex.

I rarely write adult content (smut, lemons, etc.) because I feel like I suck at writing them due to the simple fact that I don’t have any experience in that area. I write a lot more suggestive content (16+) which eludes to having sex but never actually states it or adds anything overtly sexual to the story.

However, due to some recent soul searching, I’ve come to realize that I may be a bit uptight when it comes to sexual content because I was raised in a strict Christian environment. I plan to try branching out and try writing some more adult content.

I will NOT write smut for any real persons under the age of eighteen (kpop idols for example).

When it comes to anime, though, I will age them up to at least sixteen. Some people may find some issue with this, but I feel like it’s not that big of a deal because they aren’t real people, they’re just characters and this is just fiction.

From my experience, not too many people like writing in Second Person, and must prefer First or Third. However, a long time ago on Tumblr (yes, I know, the bane of the internet), I saw several posts in the fanfiction tag talking about how they couldn’t relate to most original characters with their fair skin or curly hair. That got me thinking a lot, and I came to realize that I usually skip over descriptive details about original characters simply because I can’t relate to most of them.

Since that day, I decided to write in Second Person so that anyone, no matter their skin color, hair type, body type, etc., can enjoy the fics I write. I avoid adding descriptions of the reader so that anyone can view themselves in that role.

Alternatively, I do my best not to add gender to the reader, as well. At the end of the day, though, I am a female, so it’s natural that my fics will lean more towards a feminine reader, though I’m quite boyish so maybe that will help. I don’t like to label myself, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be straight, so most of my fics are about guys.

However, there are some female characters that I love so damn much that I would happily be with them if given the chance, so I might write about some of them occasionally.

Now, I’ve already stated that Second Person is my main go-to for my fics, but when there’s a fic that’s important to me or with a character/anime that I especially enjoy, I might switch to a different point of view for that specific fic. I usually add it to the pairing at the start of the fic, though.

In case you don’t know what the different points of view are, they are as follows:

First Person; I went to the store today. Second Person; You went to the store today. Third Person; She/He went to the story today.

The story behind my name is quite a simple and boring one, but I thought I would share it anyway.

World of Warcraft and Neverwinter are among some of my top favorite video games, and within them, my favorite class has always been the Rogue. They aren’t easy to play, and I always do them wrong, but it’s my favorite class and I feel so much happiness playing them.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been obsessed with rain. When it rains here, I usually drop everything I’m doing and rush outside with some paper and a book. I can’t express how happy I feel when it rains. It calms my soul and washes away everything that troubles me. Thunderstorms are the absolute best!

Actually, I started a fic set all about the rain. At the time of this post, I haven’t added that book yet, but I’ll be adding it soon – it’s called Rain Falls (original, I know).

Over my time across the internet, I have had many names and posted my fics in many different places under different names, so if you find it posted elsewhere under a different name, please let me know.

Currently, I am only posting my fics here and on WordPress under the same name. I’m considering posting them on Deviantart, as well, under the same name but at the current time, I have not done so.

I began my writing journey when I was around twelve years old when I joined a magical little site called Quizilla. If you didn’t get the chance to experience this wonderful site, let me give you a quick rundown of what you could find there. As the name suggests, it was a site where you could make and take lots of different quizzes. The most popular ones were things such as “What anime character are you?” “Who will fall in love with you?” “What animal are you?”, etc.

Most of the stories there at the time were all about emo boys and naruto lol I remember such stories as “Who will you choose? A demon, angel or vampire”. My favorite parts of this site were the challenges and contests, which a lot of my fics are based around. Here are a few examples:

I haven’t been able to find a website that offers a good set of prompts like they had on Quizilla, but I still try looking for them. Ever since then, I’ve been writing off and on. I like to believe my writing has gotten better, but I don’t really know for sure. At least a little less cringy, I hope.

I also hold out the hope that, one day, Quizilla will make its return.

Tarantulas: the Deadly Cargo

 I tend to associate this movie with Killer Fish – probably because I originally watched them on consecutive days, but they’ve got many other things in common.  Both feature dull 70’s actors facing off against small animals that aren’t nearly as dangerous as pop culture would have us believe.  Both go out of their way to avoid showing us anything genuinely exciting or cool.  Both have boring, contrived climaxes, and both have titles that are technically accurate but dismally forgettable.  If this one had dropped the Tarantulas and just called itself Deadly Cargo, that would be ten times better already.

A couple of crooks fly out of Ecuador with no idea that their cargo of coffee beans and illegal immigrants is, for some reason I cannot even begin to fathom, infested with spiders.  A bad engine and the aggressive spiders lead to a crash landing in Finleyville, California.  This is a sleepy little hick town that depends on the citrus industry, and they clearly haven’t had an emergency in about twelve years but they do their best to rise to the occasion.  Unfortunately, their attempts to help only unleash the deadly arachnids on their community.  Eventually, the townspeople find that the spiders have made themselves at home in the town’s fruit warehouse.  If they cannot be somehow removed, the oranges will be unsalable, and Finleyville will go broke without a crop.

No shit.  The greatest threat presented by the spiders in this movie is to the town’s economy.  I don’t know why I find that so funny.  Most spider movies present us with the horror of a slow venom death, often while playing up the omg, it’s touching me! angle. Giant spider movies give us huge monsters that can entangle and devour us. Tarantulas: the Deadly Cargo threatens that not only might we be bitten by spiders, we won’t be able to afford health insurance afterwards!

The economic angle is the key to what this movie is.  It’s trying to be something, and the first time I watched it, I wasn’t paying enough attention to pick it out.  On the second viewing, when the owner of the orange-packing plant refuses to shut down operations because of a few spiders, it clicked – this was a Jaws ripoff!  It’s got the shark and the Fourth of July Weekend and the whole thing!  There’s even a Little Alex Kitner, in the form of a kid who climbs a truck to see one of the spiders after the driver assures him it’s perfectly harmless.  Deadly Cargo has changed enough details that it could have been an interesting variation on this formula, but by the time the movie’s over its choice of shark stand-in has pushed it into a couple of corners it just can’t get out of.

I’ll come back to that – first, it’s Spider Nerd time again, and I actually do have to give Deadly Cargo some points for research.  Characters present a dead spider to some sort of scientist, who identifies it as a Brazilian Wandering Spider, Phoneutria nigriventer.  This species can be dangerous to humans, but usually only to small children, and they’re one of the few spiders capable of delivering a ‘dry’ bite that’s intended to scare rather than to kill. They’re sometimes called banana spiders because of a reputation for hanging out in shipments of fruit, but I don’t think they’ve ever been found hiding in coffee beans.  Why would a spider hide in coffee beans?  Spiders like small spaces to crawl into, such as those you find in between bunches of bananas or oranges in a box.  Coffee beans are too small to create spider-sized hidey holes!

The Nondescript Scientist also notes that Phoneutria isn’t a tarantula – another reason why the word Tarantulas should not have been in the title.  It also got a snort out of me because almost all the spiders we see in this movie are in fact Mexican Red-Knee Tarantulas (there are also a couple of Chilean Rose-Hairs).  These are the same spiders we saw in Ator: the Fighting Eagle, and are the spiders of choice for horror movies because they are docile, easy to handle, and don’t bite.  So yeah, if you ever actually see one of these in real life, you can just push it the hell over.

As long as I’m talking about the spiders in this movie, I’d like to know how they got into town so fast.  One minute the spiders are at the crash site in the middle of empty fields, the next they’re harassing the faculty at the School for Autistic Children (are you already cringing?  Wait until you see the kids marching in lockstep to an obnoxious whistle).  Spiders move at like one mile per hour.  Did the plane explosion just spray them across the entire state?

Plane explosion?  Yeah, of course there’s a plane explosion in this movie, and it’s fucking annoying because they came so close to not having one. After the crash the plane develops a fuel leak – but the town’s fire chief immediately notices it, and directs people to dig a trench the fuel can flow into so it won’t pool.  He goes around making sure nobody lights a cigarette or anything, and for a moment I really thought this might be a movie in which common sense prevails… but then some jackass on a motorcycle drives straight into the trench.  Seeing a giant fireball in a movie has never left me more disappointed.

I have digressed, though.  Let’s talk about the climax of the movie, which is one of the places where it most strongly resembles Killer Fish.  Killer Fish had the whole cast trapped with piranhas all around their boat.  Tarantulas: the Deadly Cargo has them all in a warehouse full of spiders, as a power outage simultaneously shuts down the noise that had paralyzed the creatures and locks the doors.

This situation is so forced that it probably requires more explanation.  The spiders must be removed from the oranges so that they can be shipped, but the townspeople cannot just spray the fruit with insecticides, because their buyer specifically paid for chemical-free (somebody does try to argue that he didn’t pay for spider-free, which amuses me more than it should).  Therefore they paralyze the spiders with the sound of angry wasps and go around shoveling them into buckets of booze.

Like Banana Spiders, Spider-Wasps are actually a thing – the family pompilidae lay their eggs inside living spiders so that the larvae will hatch surrounded by something they can eat.  What I can’t find when I looked these up is any reference to the spiders being paralyzed by terror when they hear the wasps coming.  This seems pretty counter-productive from the spiders’ point of view – if you hear your deadliest enemy closing in on your, wouldn’t it be far more effective to run and hide, rather than roll over and present your belly to be ovipositored?

So that’s all ridiculous, and then we don’t even get a real sense of anybody ‘winning’ at the end.  The supposed moment of triumph isn’t the spiders being out of the oranges, it’s the trapped people escaping through the roof.  In Killer Fish the piranhas ate the human villain and Kate escaped with the jewels. Deadly Cargo doesn’t have a human villain – the greedy plant owner looks like he might be able to fill this role, but no, he’s later treated as vindicated when they almost lose the orange crop!  This means the only ‘bad guys’ here are the spiders, and dropping their helplessly paralyzed bodies into poison just doesn’t feel like a victory. Neither does watching boxes of oranges go out on a train.  It’s just lacking something.

It doesn’t help that the end of both movies also just leaves the killer animal problem lying there.  In Killer Fish the whole area is still infested with piranhas – what does that mean for the tourism industry?  Is there any way to get rid of them?  In Deadly Cargo we can’t possibly be a hundred percent sure all the spiders are gone. Some might still be hanging around in somebody’s fruit bowl.  Someone in another part of the country might find a hairy leg in their organic marmalade. We never knew how many spiders there were, so we can’t be sure they’re all gone and not out invading ecosystems where they have no natural predators.

Another big part of why Deadly Cargo is so unsatisfying is not only does it lack a villain, the good characters are never well-defined enough for us to really identify with any of them.  There’s a young couple and a fire chief and the plant owner, but I can’t remember any of their names.  The only people we get a sense of are the spider victims, who are introduced just enough to tell us that they either deserved to die (Mrs. Beasley, cheating on her husband) or didn’t (Little Alex Kitner).  We can’t even feel for the girl weeping over her dead brother.

There’s a heap of other silly bullshit in this movie. Like the guy who opens a trapdoor in the ceiling and then just stands there screaming like an idiot as three or four spiders fall on him – a shot that probably looked way cooler in the director’s imagination.  Or the straight-faced implication that the spiders could sense the warehouse full of oranges from four miles away and headed directly for it.  Most of this is just mildly amusing rather than laugh-out-loud funny.  I’m sure Jonah and the bots could make a diverting episode out of this, but I don’t know if even they could make a memorable one.

Dhar Mann Real Estate Ventures

Alongside his transportation business, the young and ambitious entrepreneur started buying and rehabbing real estate in Oakland. He built up a sizable real estate portfolio in his early 20’s. While rehabbing property he found out about a government grant program that would reimburse 50% of the money he spent on construction.

Excited, he started many construction projects at once. What he didn’t realize is that it would take nearly a year for the City’s reimbursement checks to come in – well after the project money had all been spent.

In a cash crunch, he started taking some shortcuts on his grant paperwork to speed up the reimbursement process. He thought if he could get reimbursed faster it would allow him to take on even more construction projects and expand his real estate portfolio.

That decision would soon become one of his biggest life mistakes. But he wouldn’t realize it until after he made International headlines in the medical marijuana industry.

Dhar Mann Medical Marijuana Businesses

One day in 2009 while working at his real estate office, one of Dhar Mann’s commercial tenants came in to report a break-in in the tenant’s unit. The tenant was reportedly running a catering business and had been robbed.  When Dhar picked up the phone to call the police, the tenant asked him not to report it, admitting the “catering company” was just a cover-up for a medical marijuana grow operation.

That was Dhar Mann’s first introduction to California’s medical marijuana laws.  After doing some research, Dhar found that not only was growing medical marijuana legal in Oakland, but it was a very lucrative business.  At that time an Oakland-based medical marijuana dispensary had just reported 17 million dollars in annual sales.

Dhar’s first idea was to open his own medical marijuana dispensary. The only way to do that was to get a license issued by the City, but to become licensed, an applicant had to demonstrate extensive experience with growing or selling medical marijuana.  So, he knew he had to earn that experience first.

In 2010 he opened what CNN dubbed “the Walmart of Weed”- a 15,000 square foot space that was a “one stop shop for growing pot.” At no time did Dhar Mann actually sell any medical marijuana, but Dhar sold all the supplies necessary to grow it.  There was even an on-site doctor to issue medical marijuana patient cards and a classroom that offered classes on how to grow medical marijuana.

The business grand opening created a buzz around the world. Dhar Mann was featured in countless media publications including CNN, Time Magazine, Huffington Post and even landed on the front cover of Mother Jones Magazine and was the focus of a National Geographic Documentary. Dhar quickly grew the concept, becoming one of the first individuals in the world to franchise a medical marijuana business, and opened locations in Arizona, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Illinois and more.

Around this time he also found out that the City of Oakland was getting ready to issue new medical marijuana dispensary permits. So for the record, I’m excluding “Avatar: The Last Airbender” & (2003) “Teen Titans” shows cause people consider them animes when they’re only anime influenced so they’re out. But, this is SO hard! It’s like picking my children, it just feels impossible to do! Though, if I HAD to pick just one, it would have to be…… ( 2003) Kino’s Journey!

Why? Well, let’s ride right into the world of “Kino’s Journey” or in it’s original title “Kino no Tabi.”

“ The world is not beautiful, there fore it is.”

Let’s start with the story, which tells of the journey of a traveler named Kino and their motorcycle, Hermes, while they visit a long range of countries as they meet different people along the way. The actual fact is: there isn’t one solid story but 12 short stories that link together not by episode order but by events. And yet the fact that each one of this stories manages to give a deeper meaning than the whole plots from many animes amazes me till no end! Kino finds herself in the midst of these societies - some of which have downright appalling practices. Each episode approaches a theme of society, like censoring, violence, communication problems, right or wrong, the ability some people have to bite the hand that just feds them, and so on. And every time I watch each one, I found myself enjoying this series more than I should have.  

As Kino travels throughout the world and becomes acquainted with the people who inhabit it, it becomes clear that each of her encounters is essentially a separate journey into the labyrinth that is the human psyche to explore one of the many elements that make it up. The issues touched upon in the series ranges from the tendencies of humans to blindly believe in prophecies to the consequences of not having a self-conscious.

There is a wide range of characters as expected from an anime that tells about travels all over the world. While some of them are forgettable, some of them also stay in your mind. Although it is clear that neither Kino nor Hermes is the main focus of the series, together they play an essential role in its series. 

In terms of being a likeable character, Kino has become my favorite anime character ever! They inspire me in so many ways and I’m always glued to the screen every time their role comes into play. Although they appear apathetic at first, they’re a caring and understanding person. Kino travels through different countries to experience their customs and understand the citizens, but they never stay longer than three days, as they’re afraid of settling down, and would decrease of being a traveler. They’re also intelligent, skillful, extremely wise for someone so young and still as unpredictable as a teen could be. Though not fond of killing, they will do so if necessary without feeling remorse. Especially, towards those who attack them or the innocent. Kino has truly become one of the most unique characters I’ve ever seen.

Hermes, Kino’s talking motorcycle, acts as the perfect companion to his owner. Not only are his conversations with Kino very enjoyable to listen to due to the his humour, the series also allows for further exploration on his character. I won’t lie that I found it odd that we were suppose to just roll with the fact that he speaks but as the show grows over time, you do learn to accept it and that’s not the most unusual thing you’ll be seeing in the series either. He’s also the closest thing that Kino has to a friend and it just makes their relationship heartwarming a lot of the time. In addition, considering the theme of the series is the nature of humanity, his presence as a non-human makes their discussions even more interesting. You have no idea if he’s truly real or just in Kino’s head. But, whatever the case may be, he’s a fun character to journey with!

The dub is honestly one of the best that I’ve heard and I’m usually REALLY picky when it comes to English audio in anime. It was done at A.D.V films, which are the people responsible for other great dubs like “Princess Tutu”, and they do an AMAZING job!

Kelli Collins voicing Kino was the highlight of the entire dub! Her acting glues you into her role to her character and you’re just amazed of how well she fits the Kino. Especially, giving the young traveler a sense of maturity to such a young teen. It’s a shame she hasn’t been active since then and didn’t return for the reboot of the series. ( Even though it was a disaster so maybe it was for the best. ) Kino’s voice actress succeeds as the perfect person to voice such a outstanding character and how she brings her to life. I honestly can’t even picture anyone else to play the role but her. Hermes on the other hand is a hit or miss with viewers. Cynthia Martinez voicing Hermes comes off with a cartoonish boyish voice who I could definitely see annoying it’s viewers.  But to me? It honestly works! The way Hermes asks certain questions and their responses makes sense that they act childish or ask very out-looking questions of the situations at hand. Not not say he’s immature. He’s actually the voice of reason but, Cynthia shows great promise with the role. And you’ll see why once you go into this series head on.

Overall this series holds a special place in my heart. It doesn’t have that nasty fan service or anything too over the top like a Shōnen show but, it helped me get a better understanding on how humanity works and even thinks at times. In life, we don’t know which path to take but that’s the journey of it. You just get up and travel to find out what’s up ahead for you. To see the world for what it is with all it’s good and bad parts. Kino searches for life’s answers, life’s questions, and the interpretations connected to them. Destination is a state of mind; Drift along for the ride~!

2. worst anime you’ve watched

Oh gawd, this is just torture! Just when I think I can finally be rid of trash like this I have to go back and look in the bin again lmao

Let’s see…. I think I would have to say…. “ Master of Martial Hearts.” Why didn’t I say the famous “School Days?” I could but I wanted to do a different hate this time since this one made me beyond pissed off! “School Days” at least had the main lead get what’s coming to him cause we all know the douche bad deserved what was coming to him so I was fine with the insane out come. But this? HELL NO!

I found this series out by amazing reviewer, JesuOtaku, back when Youtube was starting to get popular and I always agreed with her reviews. I’m SO glad I saw her review first before stumbling upon this nasty series. First, we got under aged girls, and women in general, getting their clothes completely ripped apart as they fight one another cause why not? Screw plot! And it’s just an endless scenes of just wtf??!! I didn’t watch the series but I saw enough of it through her long review. AND…what pissed me off the most is the ending. Dear gawd! THE ENDING! This series only has 5 episodes but once you check out the last one? It deserves two middle fingers straight at it cause F*CK THIS SERIES!! No seriously, don’t even check it cause it’s just horrible. Just awful!! It’s just the worst anime to me and always will be!

This is gonna sound strange but I instantly KNEW who my favorite villain was gonna be and I couldn’t be more ready! When there’s a great hero there’s also a great villain. Out of the horrible characters did I choose? Johan from (2004) “Monster.”

The story focuses on Kenzo Tenma, a young Japanese doctor working at the Eisler Memorial Hospital during in Germany the 80′s. He is a very skilled highly brain surgeon. However, Tenma grows increasingly dissatisfied with the political bias of the hospital for treating it’s patients, and seizes his chance to change things after a strange massacre brings the twins Johan and Anna Liebert into his hospital.

Johan has a gunshot wound to the head and Anna keeps muttering about killing. Tenma decides to operate on Johan instead of a politician who arrived afterwards. Johan is saved, but the politician dies. After this Tenma loses his social standing, lost his promotion, basically everything, and not soon after that the twins escape. The top heads of the hospital are found dead the same night the twins escape. Tenma is then promoted to chef of surgeon.

After that the story advances to nine years later. A known criminal is found on the street, hit by a car. He comes under the care of Dr. Tenma, who observes him muttering about a “Monster.” Tenma extends his kindness to that criminal, and thus the criminal begins to open up to his doctor.

Following his trail to the construction site of a half finished building near the hospital, Tenma finds the man. The man, who has developed a sort of doctor-patient friendship with Dr. Tenma, warns him against coming closer, and pleads with him to run away. Tenma refuses, however, and the identity of the man holding the gun pointed at the criminal in the abandoned parking garage is revealed to be the boy whose life Tenma had saved nine years ago - Johan Liebert. Johan shoots the criminal, tells Tenma that he could never kill the man who had saved his life, and then walks off into the night while Tenma is still too shocked to stop him. I’m not gonna spoil anymore to the plot cause it’ll ruin the experience but WOW! What a series!

On the surface, Johan is a well-mannered, charismatic and compassionate young man. He possesses a favorable of traits and can easily overwhelm individuals with his seemingly flawless nature, as others describes him as being not of this world. This makes it easy for him to make new allies and manipulate them into doing various deeds for him. With such skill in creating this facade of perfection and pureness, Johan can hide his true motives with ease.

Johan delivers destruction and suffering to those who happen to fall prey to his schemes. Johan exhibits psychopathic tendencies. For example, most of his murders, both in childhood and adulthood, have been premeditated and calculated.

Johan often shows a complete disregard for life by pointing to his forehead, inviting Dr. Tenma to shoot him.

He also has a tendency to make his victims experience the worst possible loss and suffering rather than actually killing them himself;

Everyone NEEDS to check out “ Monster ” cause it does not disappoint! Even just check out just for it’s villain and the amazing english dub! Trust me, it’ll be one incredible wild ride!

    33. most underrated anime in your opinion

Since I already talked about “ Kino’s Journey” & “ Monster”, I’ll decide another great underrated anime people need to see and that’s “ Princess Tutu.”

In a fairy tale come to life, the clumsy, out-going, and gentle Ahiru (“Duck” in the English Dub) seems like an unlikely protagonist. In reality, Ahiru is just as magical as the talking cats and crocodiles that inhabit her town—for Ahiru really is a duck! Transformed by the mysterious Drosselmeyer into a human girl, Ahiru soon learns the reason for her existence. Using her magical egg-shaped pendant, Ahiru can transform into Princess Tutu—a beautiful and talented ballet dancer whose dances relieve people of the turmoil in their hearts. With her newfound ability, Ahiru accepts the challenge of collecting the lost shards of her prince’s heart, for long ago he had shattered it in order to seal an evil raven away for all eternity.

Princess Tutu is a tale of heroes and their struggle against fate. Their beliefs, their feelings, and ultimately their actions will determine whether this fairy tale can reach its "happily ever after.”

The title may seem off putting to a lot since it sounds like some girly anime but don’t judge a book by it’s cover~! This series has so much going for it and it’s honestly just outstanding! It may be predictable at the beginning ( Had the same trouble with the first season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” ) but, it becomes something you just never expected; A complex and tragedy story.

You honestly feel for every single one of these characters once their parts are given into play. And the fact that they use real classical music that compliments the dance scenes so well done. You feel the dramatic effect once our main leads come into the spotlight. The intense just rises from the music and for the dubbing too. I said back in my “Kino’s Journey” part of the ask that this was dubbed by A.D.V. Films and it’s one of my favorites ever! It’s not just one or two actors that shine, every single person portrays their characters with flying colors. I was just amazed of how incredibly well done they did!

I could go on and on about the characters but they’re all such a surprise that I rather not spoil it. This is genuinely a heartwarming show to experience for yourself. Classical music, beautifully choreographed dances, and memorable characters make for an experience worth having in all of Princess Tutu’s world. A modern fairy tale for the ages.

What comes easy won’t last long, and what lasts long won’t come easy

Here we are again. The flavor of the day is bland with a twist of desperation. 

I am not perfect by any means. I make mistakes and like to think I’ve been capable of owning them. I’ve always thought of myself to be fairly level headed, someone who can look at the bigger picture from everyone’s position. I have been overly accommodating to the people who surround me, I try way harder for them then I do for myself. I am guilty of being ‘a people pleaser’. I don’t know when that started really, but in my 30′s it became severely obvious, and I kinda hate myself for that. 

I am walking into my 8th year of my relationship with my boyfriend... B-O-Y-F-R-I-E-N-D. Not Fiance, not husband... shit, hardly a partner. He is a BOY, and I am stuck here. Not against my will obviously, I can kick him out whenever I please, however, my life with him is a complicated one that effects too many people (there I am, people pleasing again. Buckle up folks, this happens often). 

I am 7 years older then my boyfriend, let’s call him Blu (that was my dog’s name). I met Blu by accident actually. In May of 2013 my then husband and I decided we just could not work it out anymore and we split ways. We were cordial, able to remain friendly for the sake of our kids. We accepted that although we failed MARRIAGE, we will not fail Co-Parenting. He left our family home in May and by September I met Blu. There’s some chaos there but I’ll tell that tale on another occasion. Remember when I said I met Blu by accident? I was serious. I had a friend named Emma who loved drama! She came to my house and told me about a site that she found out her boyfriend was on and she wanted to see if he would flirt with me (or another fake identity she made up to be honest, she just used my information to create an account), I call that playing with fire, but you know how that can go. Anyway, she did what she needed to and got the information that she wanted. I was uninterested in those apps so I never bothered to look into it. A couple of days later someone named Blu would send me multiple messages trying to get me to talk. I decided to respond, I explained that my name wasn’t what was listed and explained the whole situation to him, he just laughed it off. I didn’t know then that he was so familiar with drama like my darling friends little stunt. Anyway, we got to talking and it was very soon when he asked if I was interested in meeting up. After all the crime shows and books I’m into it was a hard HELL NO for me. I asked him to give me a little time, I also explained my position. 

He told me a lot about himself, single dad, shares custody of two very young children with his ex. He lived with his parents about 2 miles from where I was. He didn’t seem cocky or arrogant, or maybe I just didn’t see it. We exited the chats and moved on to phone texts. He would message me every morning, afternoon and night. He knew about the age difference and didn’t care. Meanwhile I felt incredibly insecure about it. After about 7 weeks I finally caved and said I would meet him somewhere public, he said his family was having a BBQ at his house for me to just come by. I thought that out and figured: who would kill or rape me with all their family there?! So I went, but I never went inside his home. I stayed by my car, we talked for hours. I remember in the end I was fitting on the trunk of my car and him on the edge of the sidewalk... maybe 1:30 am when I finally decided to head home. He didn’t try any funny business, and was completely respectful. Before I left he asked if he can take me out to eat somewhere, like an official date, I still felt a little odd but I agreed. At that dinner I told him everything, about my pending divorce, how my custody is currently working, etc. 

Me and him were from different worlds entirely. There were a few occasions that really pointed the differences out. For example, he listens to REAL MEXICAN MUSIC (google CALIBRE 50) where as my Mexican music consisted of Reggeton, Salsa, Bachata. He was 100% grounded in his Mexican roots, where my mixed breed havin’ ass was raised in an American household, where dinners were served at a certain time, we ate together as a family, we attended church on Sundays, we were close. The structure of my life was typical American Family with the added components of my nationalities; Mexican and Puerto Rican. We didn’t curse around our elders, I didn’t know of drugs, or habits. That was the first shot, the second time I noticed the difference was in October when we made arrangements to carve pumpkins with his kids and mine. On that particular day his mom and sisters were home, so of course I invited them to participate. They looked at the pumpkins as though they just landed from outter space! The third time was just a couple of months after, December. While my house was decked out with Christmas trees, stockings, and nicely wrapped presents... his house had no tree, no gifts, nothing. 

We have gone through a lot over the years, mostly good things (or so I thought). Have you ever laid next to someone you felt the closest to and think Gosh, I don’t even know him? Eight years later and I still think that. I use to cry myself to sleep. I still feel so incredibly alone, and more so... misunderstood. The SANE me wants to think I have a right to think this way, but he comes in and convinces me that I am the problem. Meet Blu, head of the narcissists.

He is consumed with his cars, weed and sex. He has a problem with being faithful. And I have a problem with trusting him, and every time I feel I can let my guard down, he always comes in to remind me that I can’t. Things are about to get personal, I hope you don’t mind. 

The first time I found out about his ‘extra activities’ we were already living together, this was maybe a little over a year after we became official with each other. He left his phone in the living room and it was getting a ton of texts, to my luck he is also a very heavy sleeper. I opened the messages and read them (OMG WHY WOULD YOU GO THROUGH HIS MESSAGES?! FK OFF KAREN, THIS IS MY REALITY, NOT YOURS!). It was a girl asking if he was gonna go by. I messaged her back as though I was him and she went along. I ended up waking him up, my eyes red and burning from all the crying. I asked him about it and all he was able to say is WHY ARE YOU GOING THROUGH MY PHONE, turned it off and went to bed. I remember feeling low, but that didn’t stop me dumb ass from going to lay next to him and crying until I fell asleep. He ended up changing his number after a few days and said he was ‘sorry’. Those types of situations happened maybe twice a year. 

In 2016 I helped him open his own business, he had no money so I put up most of it (yes, stupid, I hear ya!) with the condition that he would not be listed on any documents as an owner. He argued with me about me not making him feel like a man (people pleasing in 3, 2, 1...) So I added him to the paperwork. I felt bad for him, I never wanted him to feel like that despite what he made me feel like. On one occasion he was working late, me being scar’d for life, I called him about 12:20 am and asked if I could take him anything or if he needs something because he had been working since 2 pm. He told me he was fine, but I said OK LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING. I went anyway to ‘take him food’, when I was driving up a black Honda was driving off, and there was Blu looking like he saw a ghost. I asked who that was an immediately he yelled and asked why I was there. I said that I brought him something to eat to which he said MY FRIEND JUST BROUGHT ME SOMETHING... my friend... hmmm... At about 4 a.m. I messaged and asked if he was ok and he said IM NOT COMING HOME, IM DONE! My pride didn’t allow this to just happen, I responded with OK. I locked his ATM card, Gas Card, and any credit lines. He came home (I thought he would) hootin and hollerin! I quietly took my explosion waiting for him to finish. At that point I said to just leave the work truck keys and to be on his way. He refused. 

In 2018 he started recording his phone calls for work purposes (you wouldn’t believe how many people try and cheat ya to save a buck!). I had access to the recordings but never listened to them because they were of a bunch of truckers asking for stuff. One day though, I was triggered. He said he was going to go down the street to help my sister and brother in law move something. I thought it was strange because my sister told me everything! So when he left I asked her about it, she said ‘yea it was weird he offered to come help’ I then asked her to call me once he left. About 10 minutes later I got the text “HEY SORRY HE LEFT LIKE 5 MINUTES AGO BACK HOME” We lived literally five minutes away, so I waited. After about 30 minutes I decided to listen to the recordings. He called a girl asking her to meet him in the Bank Of America Parking lot about 5 minutes the opposite way, he told her he was able to leave his kids with his dad for a little while so he can go see her. My heart SANK. I felt it at the pit of my stomach. This entire douche bag drove MY CAR to see some hoe??? FOR REAL! So I texted him and said where are you? He messaged about 10 minutes later and said IM ON MY WAY HOME I JUST FINISHED AT YOUR SISTERS. I didn’t respond. When he came it we went at it. Let me clear the air: I AM NOT AN ARGUER. I don’t find it useful to scream and yell, but my emotions were shot, I was on a different level now. I dropped the bomb! I guess he didn’t see it coming because he was unable to keep up with the shit storm I was dishing out. In the middle of it, that broad had the nerve to call him. I told him to answer it and he said no. When I got ahold of his phone he had the NUTS to tell me NOT TO FK IT UP FOR HIM. Shattered. I was non-existent.

The Iceberg Lounge | Chatzy

Summary: Isabella visits the Iceberg Lounge, like the Riddler told her to, and Oswald is waiting Trigger warnings: Blood, gore, guns, violence Written by: @stillpenguinking and @isabellaflynns

Oswald: Oswald was beyond on edge as he paced back and forth in his office. Ever since that weirdo who controlled his mind left he couldn't rest. What if he was only acting board but really gathering enough followers to take his position in the underworld? At the thought of that, a certain blond hair woman flashed in his mind. Isabella had been his actual labeled that by Edward. Why hadn't she shown up here yet? what was she planning? Was she going to try and kidnap him like she did Ed?

Oswald took shuttering breaths to attempt to calm down when he heard a crash outside his door. " Who's there?" He yelled out knowing he'd sent everyone home for the late night. Not bothering to wait for a response he hobbled over to his desk grabbing his gun making sure it was loaded. He could feel his hands shaking as the footsteps grew louder as they approached the door. He fired without any warning right at the face of the silhouette that flashed in the darkened halls of his club.

Isabella: Isabella didn't need to be armed. She could have taken Oswald apart with her bare hands. But slipping a gun into her handbag made her feel better, somehow. It was more visceral. She had no real plan to shoot Oswald -- she didn't know what Edward wanted her to do. Did he want her to hurt Oswald? The letter hadn't been clear. She'd reread it again and again since receiving his voicemail, but she couldn't glean anything more from it. Edward said Oswald had treated him badly and, for Eddie to admit something like that, it must have been bad. She'd clutched the letter gently against her chest again, just wanting to be close to his words, and then she'd packed her handbag and left Harley's house, heading straight for the Iceberg Lounge.

It was dark, and closed, but that wasn't a problem. Isabella twisted the door handle with one hand and walked inside. The lights were dim, but she could make out the shapes of the Lounge -- the bar, the stools, and empty tables. Oswald wasn't anywhere in sight. His office. He would be inside his office. She walked quietly, aware that he might have been alerted to her presence from the sound of the door being broken open. And yet, she was completely calm. Let him know she was coming. She could take him easily. Edward had sent her. She was here on a mission. She was doing the Riddler's work –

Bang. Isabella heard it a split second before she felt it. Something pierced her cheek. She came to a halt, and felt warm liquid trickle down her jaw, dripping down her chin thickly. Her muscles had been torn apart -- she felt them flapping against the whole part of her face as she opened her mouth in shock. "Oh my," she murmured to herself. Everything felt very distant and quiet and dim. She'd been shot. Someone had shot her in the face. She raised her fingertips to the wound, and touched it gently. There was a several inches thick diameter hole in her cheek, and her skin was ripped open.

"You shot me," she said. She felt very calm. And, as always, she felt no pain at all. Only mild surprise and confusion. How could Oswald have been prepared? How did he know she was coming? She just stood there, blood pouring down her face and onto her dress. It was a shame. She liked this dress very much.

Oswald: All the time around them seems to freeze as Oswald stared at a now bleeding Isabella. He'd been so sure she was going to kill, get revenge on all the wrong he'd done her throughout their lives together only to get shocked that he'd actually done it. Last time he had her killed he wasn't the one who cut her breaks. No, he'd paid his henchmen to kill her to rob her of her life. He looked from her to the gun shaking within his grip before he looked once again at her face. Isabella's wound seeping down her chin to drop on the floor now. Never had Oswald felt the need to throw up as he watched her nonreaction to a sudden hole in her face.

He could feel his heart rate pick up as fear began to prickle within his spin. He'd shot Isabella and she'd just stood there looking at him. It was something out of a horror movie the way she just watched him answering only with a 'you shot me'. He kept his gun trained on her even if the pure site was enough to make his stomach turn. " Yes and I'll do it again if you come near me Isabella...No henchmen this time you'd die by my hands if you advance" He managed to finally get out. Why would she have taken such a direct approach if she meant to end him? surely she didn't believe him to be completely unprepared for an attack?

He reached behind him grabbing a rag to toss at her " cover your face it's disgusting and while you're at it tell me why you thought this stupid plan would work"

Isabella: The blood was warm on her fingertips, and Isabella pulled her hand away and studied it. As always when she was gravely injured, she felt no concern for her body. It would heal. She felt no pain. She could feel the physical sensation of the gunshot wound, and what it had done to her face, but she was completely calm. Oswald was holding the gun, and his hand was shaking. Had he been aiming for her head? she wondered, in a purely speculative way. He kept the gun pointed at her, and she tilted her head to the side a little, and felt her skin flap open against her cheek, and blood spurt out.

Oswald looked sick. She recognised that expression from when Edward had stabbed her. But she didn't care what he thought of her. Her gaze landed on the muzzle of the gun as he said he would shoot her again. Slowly, she raised her hands up in a parody of surrender, and felt her sticky blood on her fingers. "I'm not going to advance," she told him. She had no intention of being shot again. But how had he known she was coming? How had he known? She didn't understand.

He grabbed a rag, and threw it to her, and she caught it deftly. She made no comment when he said her face was disgusting, and instead said, "It wasn't a stupid plan." How could it have been stupid? The Riddler told her to come. Calmly, Isabella met his gaze. "Edward told me to come here. He left a clue in his letter to me. I don't understand." For the first time, there was a slight inflection in her hollow voice, something like worry. "How did you know I would be here?"

Oswald: The longer Oswald stared at her bleeding cheek the more he felt himself growing sicker. Her complete lack of care when dealing with such a wound not only struck fear in his heart but also unsettled him to no end. With each move of her mouth, the piece of skin seemed to flap like it had a mind of its own now that it was gone from its owner.

He was grateful she'd kept her distance if not for just his pure repulsion to her face now. His gun never leaving its place pointed at her head for another shot if need be. " That's smart...But this time there will be no hesitation" He uttered out attempting to keep up his tough exterior.

He watched her with great rage as she seemly refused to cover her mouth. He chuckled softly " Really? then why is there a hole in your oh so perfect face?" He fired back not really in the state to be talking. He froze at the mention of their shared Ex...Edward told her to come here? Edward sent her a letter telling her to come here? He could feel his rage taking hold as he began shaking with fury " EDWARD DID WHAT?!!! THAT STUPID GREEN BASTARD" He yelled out in typical penguin fashion. " I know because that little snake told me you were coming!"

Isabella: Edward had told him she was coming? Isabella frowned, and that information slowly settled into her mind like a fog, breaking through the serenity she always felt after being physically damaged. Edward had told Oswald she was coming here. Why would he send her, if Oswald knew? Hadn't he wanted her to go on his behalf? She didn't understand.

Absentmindedly, she dabbed the cloth against her ripped-open cheek, trying to cover the wound, if only because the sensation of blood pooling on her face was unpleasant. It didn't make sense. It was too confusing to think about.

Oswald's tantrum didn't bother her. Isabella was used to his childish outbursts. And besides, she hardly felt like herself. "Why would he send me here, if you knew I was coming?" she asked, almost to herself, like it was a puzzle she had to solve. She blinked slowly, and pressed the rag against her wound hard, feeling her muscles and shattered bone against her fingers. "He must have known something bad would happen. That was the one thing she could cling to, the only thing that felt genuine and real in the aftermath of being shot in the face. Edward loved her. She thought of his kind, gentle, words in the letter, how much he wanted her to be by his side. But he'd wanted to keep her safe, so he hadn't let her join him with his game. He loved her. He even told me in my Letter to use my gun on you. didn't his letter to you say harm me?" He lowered his gun to his side in silent anger, this was a game Oswald was getting tired of playing with the green-suited moron. " He wanted me to shoot you he doesn't love anyone but himself and we are the idiots who keep falling for his crap"

He growled a bit, thinking of a plan of action he wasn't going to let this go. No, the submissive Oswald was gone, died the night Edward broke him with his words before days later when he'd actually ended their relationship. This new Oswald wanted blood, his blood to be exact. He smirked at Isabella " You know for once I agree completely, I shouldn't get angry...I should get even, He has taunted me for the last time. You know the truth Isabella you're just too stupid to admit it out loud. You got played"

Isabella: It didn't make any sense. Isabella shook her head, and felt her skin give beneath the rag. The Riddler played you. Edward wouldn't. She desperately held onto the belief that she just had to understand, she just had to figure something out. Or maybe Oswald was right, and she did have to get shot, but there was a logical reason behind it. There had to be. It had to be part of a larger scheme, something that she didn't know about yet. Oswald kept talking, and she wanted him to stop. The comforting dissonance she'd felt was fading now, and leaving her with a kind of screaming terror inside her chest. Edward had sent her here in the hope that she and Oswald would kill each other. That couldn't be true.

"No," she whispered weakly. "No, you're wrong! His letter didn't tell me to hurt you! He just... He implied... I didn't understand all of it!" She snapped. She couldn't think when she was like this. When she felt sick. Wasn't that what Edward had called her? Sick. He'd said she was too unwell to help him, too obsessed to be allowed near him. Her head felt foggy, and she lowered the rag from her face, not caring if it disgusted Oswald. She clutched her stomach, wrapping her arms around her abdomen. "You're wrong. Stop saying that!"

But Oswald didn't stop. He doesn't love anyone but himself. Isabella thought of the anger in the Riddler's voicemail message, so disappointed in her that she hadn't figured out his riddle, she'd missed his clue. Didn't she believe that too, sometimes? That he only loved himself. But he'd said. He'd said he loved her. She closed her eyes tightly, as if blocking out the sight of Oswald would stop his awful words. He wanted to get even? He wanted to get revenge on Edward? She didn't even have the strength to argue with him. She just stood there, trying to fight off the wave of betrayal that was threatening to drown her.

"I didn't get played! You just don't understand!" she insisted, but it felt like begging, like she was begging Oswald to stop tearing away her belief. It was like he was ripping the carpet out from underneath her, taking away a fundamental truth. She had to get out of here. She had to go to the Riddler, to let him explain himself, to give him a chance to justify his actions. He would explain. He would give her the answer, and this would make sense. But, even as she thought that, Isabella knew she couldn't go to him. Because what if Oswald was right?

She opened her eyes and stared at him, though he was blurry now, as tears filled her eyes. The blood was still pumping from the wound in her face, and she ignored it completely. "I love him, Oswald. You can get even if you want, but I have faith. I'm loyal." Her voice shook, and she felt like she was lying to herself.

Oswald: Oswald didn't know why he wanted her to understand just how cruel the Riddler had been. Not to just one person but two, chalking it up to a moment of weakness Oswald didn't want Isabella to suffer at the hands of someone who couldn't see beyond himself. He listens to her try and rationalize the betray done to her by him and he shook his head making his voice softer " Isabella...He played you.. he played me. He used what he knew about us from our times together knowing just what buttons to push at the right moment. He treated us like nothing more than puppets for his enjoyment"

Oswald watched her cruel with no amusement at all, it hurt to be betrayed it hurt to be used. Edward couldn't get away with the pain he caused here. Once again Isabella and he were placed at odds all over someone who couldn't be bothered enough to care for either of them. He felt his own heart start to tear itself apart at the pain caused by his ex. He'd never had used him in this way, it was one path Oswald would never stoop to.

He looked at her as her voice turned almost begging as he continued to tell her the truth. " Isabella...Everything is there for you to see, all the proof that Edward lied to us...I'm not letting him get away with this, look at yourself looking at what he's done to you. You've become obsessed with him once again." He looked at her pleading with her to see reason or at least hide somewhere until he could take him down.

He stared back at her with his eye starting to water as well " I loved him too and he used us...this can not go unanswered Isabella...Be loyal to him if you are foolish enough to still believe him. but I promise you this should he put it in your mind to come after me to stop what's coming...I will end you, no free pass this time"

Isabella: Oswald didn't stop talking. Did he want her to break down? Was that it? Isabella kept her eyes closed as he talked. He didn't sound spiteful, like he normally did. In fact, he sounded uncharacteristically kind, as if he was in pain too. If he'd been else, she would have said he felt sorry for her. He used her full name, and she couldn't remember the last time he'd done that, but, for some reason, it made the ache in her heart even worse. Why was he trying to tear away everything she believed in? Edward loved her again. He'd written to her, and it was such a beautiful letter. It didn't matter he'd let her get shot. He loved her.

"I'm not obsessed!" she said, but her voice sounded shrill even to her own ears. She knew she was. She could feel it inside her head. Ever since she'd seen that newspaper article about the Riddler's return. It was like a heat inside her brain, like a dull warmth that just hung around her every thought like a fog. She couldn't think of anything except Edward. All she wanted was to please him. She'd threatened to rip out a stranger's heart because he'd insulted the Riddler. You've become obsessed with him once again. If Oswald could see it, surely there had to be some truth to it?

She opened her eyes and blinked rapidly at him, and saw that his eyes were glinting too. Oswald didn't understand. It wasn't foolish of her to believe him. It felt necessary. What else did she have, if she didn't have her love for Edward? It was the one thing she knew was true, the thing she was made to believe, the reason she existed at all. Oswald could never understand something like that. She didn't know what to say, how to explain it. Where was the urge to stop him? Oswald had just admitted that he was going to 'get even' with Edward, but she felt no desire to warn Eddie, or protect him. She just felt so tired.

"I understand," she whispered. "I won't get in your way. I'm not going to see him. He doesn't want to see me." That fact made her feel nauseous, and she swayed a little. "I should want to stop you," she said. "I should want to. I love him so much. But I --" She cut herself off. It made no sense, and she felt so odd. "You do what you think you must, Oswald. I promise I won't get in your way." She swallowed thickly, and tasted the metal from the wound in her face as she swallowed blood. "I am very tired," she said simply. "I can't think." And that was all she could manage to say.

Oswald: Oswald watched as she seemly crumbled down before him, in a typical isabella fashion. Never one to show just how broken she really was. He told her to go to Harley, and that was the only place Isabella wanted to be. At home, with Harls, curled up on the couch. Harls could stitch up her face to help it heal faster, and make her tea. Sigh... it’s a real loss of a chance to get rid of bail tho. But we deserve stronger criminal justice reform that doesn’t play into the hands of police/court forces, and this wasn’t it.

Long Guide:

Prop 14: State spends money for stem-cell research by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). I’d say NO for this one, just because CA’s funding would be better saved for other things right now. (It also feels like it doesn’t make sense to fund stem-cell research more than any other kind of research, unless there’s something I’m missing?)

Prop 15: Commercial properties are taxed according to current market price. Exceptions: agriculture, property owners worth $3 million or less. It’s a hard YES from me- this law challenges the “corporations are people” mentality by treating corporate holdings as a different situation than ordinary people.

A potential drawback is that if corporations are taxed more, then they would potentially raise rents on small businesses; however, I’m pretty sure they’re raising rents already, and not passing this law won’t suddenly make corporate real estate treat its renters ethically. We can’t refuse a good law out of fear of what corporations will do. If a corporation can’t function when its tax loopholes are closed, then it’s really dumb to say that we as a state need to keep tax loopholes to protect them.

Prop 16: Restore considering race/sexuality in gov/public institutions, aka restore Affirmative Action for disadvantaged groups. There is a federal standard for this, but CA banned looking at these qualities in 1996 (while still looking at qualities like class, disability, etc). For those of you who feel uncomfortable with Affirmative Action, I suggest you watch CA Assembly Member Evan Low talk about this amendment. While you watch, try to think about whether denying equitable treatment to others for the sake of your group’s power is the way you want the world to run.

Basically, a YES would let the state acknowledge that race/sexuality matters to someone’s experience. Only a coward or a selfish bastard would not be able to admit this is true. I hope CA voters will act on conscience and not on their base fears. Do the right thing and vote yes.

Prop 17: People on parole can vote. YES. Fun fact: the one dude on the opposition side was like, now sodomites will be able to vote!! which I thought was hilarious. Like, sodomites are already voting in droves, this would just let the ones on parole vote too :)

Prop 18: 17 year olds that will be 18 for a general election can vote in the primary elections. YES because it’s more fair. Major elections are a two part process- primary and general- and it’s not fair for someone who can vote in the general to not be allowed a say in the primary.

Prop 19: Ok, this one is really complicated. Essentially, it’s a mixed bag of pros and cons, and how you vote will depend on which side you think weighs more. (For a more complete explanation, here’s the League’s explanation or this CalMatters overview.) 

1. PRO- It makes it so so that multiple houses can’t be inherited with a tax break, just the primary residence- this closes a loophole exploited by landowners and developers. The law would push rich house hoarders to sell. The League (see sources above) explains that this will encourage people to move and free up housing, but the SF Chronicle points out that it will only reshuffle the deck of existing housing, which does not give a break to new homebuyers who can’t afford current prices. However, this is a pretty big loophole to close and potentially open up more housing, especially in urban areas that need existing housing opened up for use, even if they also need more than just that.

2. CON- It allows qualifying homebuyers (mainly over 55s) to move three times, even across county lines, while still keeping the tax rate from their initial property. This is a bit excessive, and has two concerns that I can see: 1. counties would not make enough property tax and 2. under 55 homeowners would be responsible for the bulk of property tax. I don’t think giving a broad tax break to over 55s is the best plan, because while it would be great for low-income seniors, it gives an unnecessary break to wealthy seniors, who should be contributing to the community in property tax the way the rest of people do.

In the end, is it worth it to close one tax break (for inheritance of multiple properties) just to open another (certain groups can keep tax breaks after multiple moves)? After a lot of consideration, I’m going to say NO simply because I don’t think the revenue from the first will make up for the loss to counties from the second. Neither or a Yes nor a No vote will fix problems for low-income seniors, for problems with California housing, or for counties most in need of funding; a No vote seems, to my layperson’s eyes, at least a bit more fiscally sound.

Prop 20: This HEINOUS prop wants to turn certain misdemeanors into felonies, require DNA samples collected for certain crimes before 2014, and reduce parole. It basically wants to beef up the prison system, treat people like chattel to be shunted into cells, and make it harder for them to get out. If you have a heart, it has to be a NO for this one.

Prop 21: If you believe in rent control (which I do) and/or in local governments having some self-determination in housing laws (which I think is reasonable) then it’s gotta be a YES. (Bonus: there’s a lot of history behind rent control in CA that is interesting, but I don’t have the time to explain it now, sorry!)

Prop 22: Would make app-based drivers into independent contractors, not employees. Labor protections would not apply to these drivers (e.g. minimum wage, overtime, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation). Uhh, it’s a definite NO. (Fun fact: Uber, Lyft, Doordash, and others have spent $184M on getting this passed, to allow them to continue to benefit off of under-compensated labor. Imagine if they put that money towards drivers’ benefits and protections instead, hmm.)

Prop 23: Ok, so on the surface this prop is about better care for dialysis patients, including requiring a physician on-site and reporting data on clinics to state groups, which is enough for a YES. However, there’s a larger backstory here about the fight between Big Dialysis companies and the healthcare worker union SEIU-UHW West. You may remember a similar bill about dialysis from a few years ago, which was also a fight between these two groups. Essentially, the dialysis industry wants to keep costs low, even at the expense of patient care. The union wants better patient care and better treatment for dialysis nurses and doctors. They haven’t been able to come to an agreement privately, so the union has been bringing some issues to the public vote. The League writes “Some critics see the ballot box as off-limits to unions, while they turn a blind eye to corporate lobbyists who fund state lawmakers by the millions. This seems myopic to us” and I agree. Since I don’t have piles of money to lobby with, I want chances to share my support for workers through my vote. I just hope other people will see it the same way...

Prop 24: On the surface, this prop means to create better online privacy for users, but in its details... well, it’s honestly very murky. This is gonna be a NO because there are several loopholes and exceptions that make it the wrong next step in data privacy protection. From what my research (the League, SF Chronicle) is saying, it would allow for “pay-for-privacy” schemes where companies can charge extra for consumers wanting to opt out, among other details. There’s a lot in this prop and I’m not equipped to go through all of it, but it looks like it doesn’t have the teeth to do much, while also introducing some potentially unwanted variables into privacy protection.

Prop 25: Ok, so California has had an abysmal record with criminal “justice” in the past several decades, but in the past couple of years, there have been some advancements in putting people before prisons under the law. One was the recent Senate Bill 10 which removed the bail system in favor of a risk assessment program. Prop 25 wants to repeal SB10 and bring bail back.

Returning to a bail system would put undue emotional and financial strain on low-income folks, so it seems like an automatic Yes. However, what does a risk-assessment system entail?

Here’s my brother’s statement: “This referendum on Senate Bill 10 would put into place a “risk algorithm” that depends on systemic racism-impacted metrics like arrest history, employment history, residential stability, and education levels to determine whether someone should be incarcerated pre-trial. Hard NO. This algorithm does not have full transparency or accountability, and cannot be appealed. Statistical B.S. that reinforces the biases of the police/judges/system, but under the guise of science. Last minute amendments to the bill also found ways to increase funding for law enforcement. Human Rights Watch opposes Prop 25. Reject this prop and get the state government to try again with better bail reform.“

However, I’m also worried that a return to bail is, well, real bad. I’ve been mulling over this one pretty hard, especially since I’m attached to what SB10 had originally promised to be. But as said in this opinion piece on Knock LA, “While the cash bail industry does exploit the hellscape that is mass-incarceration, it does not drive mass-incarceration.” You know who does drive mass-incarceration? The criminal justice system. Bail bond companies suck, big time. But putting more power in the hands of the criminal justice system doesn’t bode well for the future. The new system will be run by probation departments, and from what I know about probation departments, I DO NOT trust them. This “risk-algorithm” has no incentive to not be racist/classist, and as far as I can tell, there is only a mandated “review process” of the data, not actual protections in place. 

I wanted SB10 to make great changes, but that’s not what it turned into in the end. And though I hate to side with bail, because again, bail is a horrible horrible practice that needs to go away right now- I’m gonna say NO on Prop 25. We need a different solution instead of going from the frying pan into the fire. (UGGGHHHH I HATE THAT I HAVE TO SAY NO. I DON’T WANT BAIL AROUND. BUT THIS REPLACEMENT IS TOO SHADY TO BACK.)

Conclusion

This years crop of props was mostly straightforward, with a couple of doozies on there. I hope I made the right decisions... honestly, with voting, you do your best but don’t always know. If in the next few weeks I hear something game-changing, I’ll change my recommendation here, but as of now [Oct. 10, 2020], this section is done!

Fundraising in the name of Jesus is nothing new, but fundraising for an accused murderer and presumed racist has raised some eyebrows. What kind of Christians support people who murder others? is a popular question. Everywhere people are asking “why?” Why would Christians, who must be good, support someone accused of doing such a bad thing with such corrupt motives? 

Inevitably in situations like this one people argue that these are “not real Christians” or that they’re “fake Christians,” nonsense that RD contributor Chrissy Stroop deftly disposed of. I want to look at why people are surprised and show that they shouldn’t be because American Christianity and white supremacy are inextricably intertwined. 

The KKK is a Christian organization. The Klan burned crosses as a “symbol of sacrifice and service, and a sign of the Christian Religion sanctified and made holy nearly 19 centuries ago, by the suffering and blood of 50 million martyrs who died in the most holy faith.” In 2017, Ilia Calderón, a Black Hispanic journalist at Univision, interviewed a KKK leader who told her “We’re going to burn you out. . . . We killed six million Jews the last time. Eleven million is nothing.” Calderón asked, “Are you a hate group? How do you define yourselves?” The response was unequivocal: “We define ourselves as a Christian group.”

Slavers and segregationists justified their atrocities to themselves and the world by citing Christianity and the Bible. The same bigotry that once sought exemptions from civil rights laws to allow Christian business owners to refuse to serve Blacks is seeking identical exemptions to refuse to serve LGBTQ citizens. 

Sometimes the white supremacy interwoven with Christianity is less obvious, even if it’s staring us in the face. Jesus, if such a man existed, was certainly not white. Yet in America, the most popular depictions of Jesus feature a blond-haired, blue-eyed, white-skinned fellow gazing into the distance. The KKK bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. on September 15, 1963, killing four little girls, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair. In one of the stained-glass windows that was not entirely destroyed an image of a faceless Jesus remained. When James Baldwin was asked what this faceless Jesus said about the tragedy he responded: “The absence of the face is something of an achievement, since we have been victimized so long by an alabaster Christ.”

Baldwin is not alone. Asked about the relationship between Christianity and white supremacy, Dr. Anthea Butler, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, said, “It’s a huge relationship. Every time you see a white Jesus you see white supremacy.” 

The image of a white Jesus has an impact. A new series of studies shows that people are more likely to select candidates for hypothetical jobs when the candidate is the same race as their personal conception of god. In America, Christian children, “both White and racial minority, conceptualized God as more White than Black (and more male than female)” according to one of the studies. The authors write in their abstract, “data reveal a clear and consistent pattern: Attributing a social identity to God predicts perceiving individuals who share that identity as more fit for leadership.” In other words, thinking of god as white, as most Americans do, means you think white people are more fit to lead and better to hire. It’s an inherent bias written into the DNA of American Christianity. 

The imagery is everywhere, even in footsteps of progress. The Mississippi legislature voted to remove an overt symbol of white supremacy, the Confederate flag, from the state flag, while at the same time requiring that the exclusionary Christian nationalist phrase “In God We Trust” be added. Data show that “In God We Trust” in this context is a racist dog whistle. To white Christian nationalists in Mississippi, the phrase means “us” not them— “They’re really kind of saying that this country belongs to a certain (group), and really what they’re saying is it belongs to white Protestant people,” said Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist who studies Christian Nationalism.

There are those who don’t hear these dog whistles, not because they’re inaudible, but because they’ve stuffed their fingers into their ears, unwilling to hear anything that might connect their religion with racism. But the link is backed by data.

That willful deafness stems from our basic failure to recognize that religion and goodness are two different things. For many, religion is believed to be inherently good and moral. The narrative is omnipresent in our politics and in the media. Therefore, anything bad or immoral, such as racism or sexism, is by definition incompatible with religion. This is why we get the claims of “Fake Christian” we hear so often and which Stroop exposed as fallacious. 

Christians fundraising for an accused racist and murderer was a surprise only to those who conflate “Christian” with “good.” They were surprised that Christians could support racism and murder because of flawed assumptions. Baldwin followed up his incisive observation about the faceless stained-glass Jesus, with another, “it sums up the crisis we’re living through. If Christ has no face, then perhaps it is time that we, who invented and in one way or another are responsible for our deities, give him a new face…”

The face Americans have given Christianity is a mask. Until we learn that “Christian” is not synonymous with “good,” that religion is not a proxy for moral virtue, we will never defeat racism.

Dog waste poses threat to water

Where they're cracking down:

San Diego. The city spent roughly $10,000 on extra trash cans, nagging signs and plastic "mutt mitts" at its Dog Beach, where the surf was closed to swimmers 125 times in 2000. The measures led to "measurably fewer dog piles. That's the term we use," says Ted Medina, deputy director for coastal parks. He estimates the beach is 30%-40% cleaner than it was before the effort started late last year.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area near Atlanta. Bacteria levels in the river exceed standards so often that a Web site tells would-be boaters and swimmers whether the river is safe on any given day. To help clean it up, park officials recently started giving tickets to visitors who have dogs but no doggie bags.

Boulder, Colo. Here the problem wasn't dirty water but the nitrogen in dog droppings. Native grasses in the city's mountain parks are used to low-nitrogen conditions. But with dogs doing their business, weeds were muscling aside the grasses. The city did 10 months of education before starting to hand out $100 fines last year. Boulder officials had to convince residents that dog waste "is not fertilizer," says Mike Patton, co-director of open space and mountain parks. "Some people really did believe it was."

For as long as the dog has been man's best friend, dog waste has posed a menace to man's nose and foot. Now science has revealed a more unsavory truth: It's an environmental pollutant.

In the mid-1990s, scientists perfected methods for tracking the origin of nasty bacteria in streams and seawater. From Clearwater, Fla., to Arlington, Va., to Boise the trail has led straight to the hunched-up dog — and to owners who don't pick up after their pets.

At some beaches, dogs help raise bacteria levels so high that visitors must stay out of the water. Goaded by such studies, some cities have directed as much as $10,000 in the last few years to encourage dog owners to clean up after their pets. A few municipalities have started issuing citations to those who ignore pet clean-up ordinances.

Many dog lovers are in denial about their pooches' leavings. But researchers have named the idea that areas used by dogs pump more bacteria into waterways — the "Fido hypothesis."

Dogs are only one of many fixtures of suburban America that add to water pollution. Lawn fertilizers, rinse water from driveways and motor oil commonly end up in streams and lakes.

But unlike those sources, dogs generate disease-causing bacteria that can make people sick. Studies done in the last few years put dogs third or fourth on the list of contributors to bacteria in contaminated waters. "Dogs are one of our usual suspects," says Valerie Harwood, a microbiologist at the University of South Florida. "At certain sites, we find their effect to be significant."

It doesn't take a Ph.D. to figure out that dog do is nasty. But it took science to determine how nasty it is.

From mutt to blue-blooded champion, all dogs harbor so-called coliform bacteria, which live in the gut. The group includes E. coli, a bacterium that can cause disease, and fecal coliform bacteria, which spread through feces. Dogs also carry salmonella and giardia. Environmental officials use measurements of some of these bacteria as barometers of how much fecal matter has contaminated a body of water.

This wouldn't matter if pet dogs were as rare as pet chinchillas. But four in 10 U.S. households include at least one dog, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. The association's statistics also show that Americans owned 54.6 million dogs in 1996 and 68 million dogs in 2000. Of that total, 45% were "large" dogs — 40 pounds or more.

Those numbers add up to a lot of kibble. That wouldn't matter if all dog owners also owned a utah pooper scoopers. But several studies have found that roughly 40% of Americans don't pick up their dogs' feces (women are more likely to do so than men).

New analysis provides answers

The environmental impact of dog waste went unrecognized for decades. Then scientists developed lab techniques to determine the origin of fecal bacteria contaminating water. One method is a variant of DNA fingerprinting. Another method looks at the antibiotic resistance of microbes from different species.

Scientists caution that the methods are still new. They are able to distinguish between major and minor sources of pollution, but they can't say with precision whether dogs contribute 20% or 30% of the pollution in a stream. "There's inherently some error," says Don Stoeckel, a microbiologist for the Ohio district of the U.S. Geological Survey who's studying bacteria-tracking methods. "I think the best (they) can do is give you some evidence of the magnitude of each source."

Nonetheless, Stoeckel says, the analytical tools do provide useful information. Researchers have studied dozens of waterways. Wild birds and humans usually head the roster of who's fouling the water. But in some areas, dogs make significant deposits.

At Morro Bay, Calif., for example, dogs contribute roughly 10% of the E. coli, says Christopher Kitts, a microbiologist at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo. "And that can be the difference between a beach closing and a beach not closing," he says.

Places where dogs dirty the water:

Stevenson Creek in Clearwater, Fla. Residents were worried that a sewage treatment plant contaminated the creek. But when Harwood tested the water, she found that dogs, along with leaky septic tanks and wild animals, were to blame for high bacteria counts. Dog feces probably washed out of yards by the creek, Harwood says.

Four Mile Run in Arlington and Fairfax counties, Va. Studies show that dogs add to the contamination in this suburban Washington, D.C. stream. Officials calculate that the 12,000 dogs living in Four Mile Run's watershed leave behind more than 5,000 pounds of "solid waste" every day.

Boise River in Boise. The river suffers from high bacteria levels that make it unsuitable for swimming. Testing of streams and drainpipes flowing into the river showed that in urban areas, dogs were a leading culprit. In some spots, dogs and cats account for even more of the bacteria than human feces — from dysfunctional septic tanks and leaky sewage pipes — do.

Fines don't sway some

Even where dogs aren't the prime offenders, they're one of the few polluters authorities have control over. At many California beaches, for example, seagulls and other birds are most responsible for high bacteria levels. But federal laws protect birds.

That leaves dogs. Officials know that they have a lot of educating to do before people realize their pooch can be a canine sewage pipe. Some people find it humiliating to carry a plastic bag.

A survey by the Center for Watershed Protection in 1999 found that of the 41% of respondents who rarely or never clean up after their dogs, 44% would refuse to do so in the face of fines and neighbors' complaints. Reasons included, "because it eventually goes away," "small dog, small waste," and "just because."

So more cities may follow the lead of Laguna Beach, Calif., a wealthy beach enclave. The city provides pooper-scoopers at the local dog park. But many people "don't take care of their little friends," says Victor Hillstead, the city's parks and buildings manager.

So the city hired Entre-Manure, poop-scooping service based in nearby Dana Point whose motto is "#1 in the #2 Business." Since the city's contract started in January, the service has collected 187 pounds of dog waste from the city. "I'm real proud of that fact," says Craig Stern, founder and chief picker-upper. "That's pollution that'll never reach the ocean."
