Deciding to write The Walking but if I was in it
Tw: Mentions of gore, idrk
Chapter One: Tell It To The Frogs
“Come on, Emmy! You gotta keep moving!” I call, “I’m doing all the heavy lifting, the least you could do is not die!”
“I’m trying, I’m trying!” She calls back, sounding out of breath.
The creatures move closer. They look like dead bodies, but here they are, moving, walking, biting. It’s a terrifying experience, but her life depends on her to move faster, I’ve always been the fitter one, but she needs to hurry up. I’m the one carrying the bags of food and clothes and random other things we threw in the bags, in our hurry to escape. We just have to make it to Atlanta, it’s where the refugee centre is.
“Emmy!”
“I’m not gonna make it, Van!”
“Yes, you are, just move your legs!”
The creatures, reach out for her, snapping their jaws. She screams in terror and pain as one’s jaw latches onto her shoulder.
“Emmy!” I stop running for a second and look between her and the abandoned highway, full of empty cars, “Emmy, I’m sorry,” I continue to run.
“No! Don’t leave me-“her voice is cut of as the other creatures pile onto her, biting her flesh, feasting on her.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper as I take my chance to run, tears threatening to fall.
I keep running, ignoring how tired my legs are and how out of breath I am. The world around me was silent, as I stop running for the first time in a while. The only sounds were birds, wind and my heavy breathing. In the distance I hear a loud car. I look up and rapidly scan across the abandoned highway. Did the creatures learn to drive? I was panicking. That’s when I see a fancy red sports car, fly down the road creating lots of noise. The person driving the car was human, that’s one plus side. He looked like he was enjoying himself, as he cheered out the window. A van follows behind, except it slows down, right next to me.
The man in the driver’s seat calls out to me, “Hey little girl, you alright?”
I just look at him, wide eyed, still sweating.
“Little girl, I’m Rick Grimes, I’m a police officer, I can help you,”
I still stay silent.
“Can you hear me?” He unbuckles, his seat belt and opens his door.
I nod, subtly. He slowly walks towards me, so he doesn’t scare me.
“Okay, that’s good. Are you bit?”
I shake my head slightly.
“That’s even better. Are you travelling with anyone, like your parents or friends?”
I shake my head again.
“Oh…I’m sorry to hear that, well what’s your name?”
“Savannah,” I say quietly.
“Alright, Savannah, can you tell me how old you are?” He says softly as he creeps forward.
He’s wearing a police uniform, and he even has a sheriff’s hat. It’s slightly calming.
“14,”
“14? And travelling on your own? That’s a bit dangerous, don’t you think?”
I nod and look back at the truck. There’s a girl in the front seat, and two guys and a girl in the back.
“Where are you heading?”
“Atlanta, the refugee centre,”
“The refugee centre and the entire of Atlanta have been overrun by walkers. You wanna come with us Savannah? We have a safe camp, and probably other children, too,”
“Probably?”
“I haven’t been there yet, but my friends in the truck have,”
“How do you know it’s safe?”
“I don’t, but it’ll be safer than wondering around here,”
“Are you sure? You don’t even know me,”
“I just met the guy in the red car and my friends in the truck, but we saved each other’s lives, so now we trust each other,”
“And…you wanna trust me?”
“You’re a child, we wanna help you because there is a high chance you won’t make it on your own. And trust is the key to helping you,”
After a second of silence, taking in the information, I nod.
“Great, come on,”
We walk to the van, and he gets in the driver’s seat and I climb into the back. The others are introduced as Andrea, the girl in the front, Jacqui, the girl in the back, T-dog, one of the guys in the back, Moralez, the other guy in the back and Glenn, the guy that was in the sports car.
“What’s in the bag, kid?” Moralez asks, suspiciously as the van starts moving.
I look down at my bag, “Stuff.”
“What kind of stuff?” Andrea asks as she turns to look in the back.
“Food, water, clothes, photos, the stuff you’d usual take when the world is overrun by man-eating creatures,”
“You got any weapons?” T-dog adds.
“Of course I do,”
“Okay, and how can we trust you with them?” Moralez says, not dropping his suspicion.
“Leave her alone, she’s just a kid not a cold-blooded murder,” Jacqui intervenes.
“Okay, okay,” Moralez says, giving in.
The van falls silent as we drive. We take a road to the quarry. That’s where their camp must be. We pull up and Moralez heads straight to his wife and two kids, Andrea goes to her sister, Jacqui and T-dog go to help an old man fixing an RV.
“We thought something happened to you,” The old man said.
“We made it out, thanks to the new guy,” Moralez says.
“New guy?” A different guy, who also wears a police uniform but without a hat.
“Yeah, the new guy,” Glenn says.
Rick gets out of the car and steps into view. A woman and her son’s jaw drops. Rick looks shocked.
“Dad!’ The little boy runs up to Rick and hugs him.
They fall to the ground, holding each other, crying. It’s a wholesome moment, even if I barely knew the group. The mother of the child seemed shocked, upset and happy all at the same time, which raised my suspicion, but I stayed quiet. After a few minutes Rick and the child finally pull away from each other.
“Where’s Dixon?” Shane, the other police officer, who happens to be Rick’s best friend.
“He got a bit out of control, so officer friendly over here handcuffed him to the roof,” Moralez says, referring to Rick.
“And I may have lost the key down a pipe,” T-dog adds.
“Daryl ain’t gonna like that,” Shane says.
“I’ll take full responsibility for it,” T-dog says.
“You know that won’t end well, T-dog,” Dale, the old man who owns the RV, says.
“But I have to,” T-dog insists.
“No, just let us handle him,” Shane counters.
“Who’s this, dad?” Carl, the little boy, says from behind me, causing me to jump slightly.
“That’s Savannah, we found her wondering around near the highway,” Ricks says.
Notes: More chapters to come. Feedback is welcome, my real name ain't Savannah but I'm in one of those phases where I'm obsessed with a name. I have a few plans for the future of Savannah. Like around the prison era Daryl and Carol become like her adoptive parents, around the time of Terminus, Carl and Savannah become a thing <3 and a rivalry between Savannah and Enid. I need ideas and feedback.
