His close friend and fellow actor, Kevin Day tells him he needs to get a bodyguard, Neil can’t really put it off anymore especially since a new problem has arisen: a stalker.

Happy New Year!

Part of me wanted to do a Year In Review post, like I’ve seen a few other creators do, but instead of talking about myself (which I do for the entire rest of the year anyway lmao), I’m gonna do a reclist instead, of the best fics I’ve read this year. A lot of it is BNHA, because that’s been my main fandom for 2020, but I did spend a decent amount of time in other spaces. If you see a **, that means there’s boning at some point – if the fic is in bold, then there’s a lot of boning. I @ed their Tumblr if I knew it off the top of my head, but I may have missed some.

Don't Yuck Her Yum by rumblefish ( @rumbllefish) (League of Villains Gen)

Complete – A quick disclaimer, pia is a mutual and a friend. That being said, this is such a cute little snapshot into the LOV with everyone’s favorite Found Family trope. Now, I’ll admit to being additionally biased because pia gave me that sweet sweet Dadpress food, but her Spinner is also on point. Short and sweet.

the Issue of the Jeanist Corpse (the Jorpse) by Princeliest (Hawks & Jeanist Gen)

Complete – Witty and hilarious, a deleted scene when Hawks went to visit Best Jeanist before War Arc. I love how antsy Hawks is, and how fussy Jeanist. Also, I’m a sucker for putting a j at the beginning of everything for Jeaninst.

Queer Eye: We're In Japan! And There Are Pro Heroes Everywhere!! by night_of_the_living_trashcan (Background Erasermic Family)

Complete – I love a good Queer Eye fic, and this one is so spot on. The Fab Five couldn’t get a better candidate than Aizawa (well, almost; see below). And I’m a sucker for Erasermic family.

**Yesterday's Gods by Karzai (All Might/Reader)

WIP - Reader character is an ex-military doctor who comes to work at UA. If you’re a fan of very well-developed backstories, and reader characters that are their own people, then this is the fic for you. This fic gives me huge Newsroom vibes - we’ve got a past romance, and the tension after years apart. We get present day when they are older and more jaded, and we get the backstory of the reader character and All Might when they were young and spry.

**surrender (whenever you're ready) by OfMermaids ( @ofmermaidstories) (Bakugou/Reader)

WIP - Bakugou accidentally destroys a florist’s shop. Bar none the best Bakugou fic out there - his characterization is so on point. He is grouchy but so vulnerable, he’s coarse and soft and insecure and such a perfectionist. The relationship with the reader character develops very naturally, and the chapters are long. Bonus, we get some bangin’ Kiri as well.

**if i could keep cool by andypantsx3 ( @andypantsx3) (Todoroki/Reader)

Complete – I’m in love with the premise of the fic: a hired cleaner gets kidnapped due to a misunderstanding of the romantic variety. Andie’s Todo is well written, and the pacing of the story is nice and tight. An easy read.

**Subject: RAPTOR by Tainted_Wine ( @tainted-wine)(Hawks/Reader)

Complete – The villains have turned Hawks into a Nomu, and reader works collecting semen for the facility for breeding purposes. Bigtime monster-fucking, but it’s very poignant and well-done. Very long, but well worth the time.

**My Hero by HeroAssociation(Aizawa/Reader)

WIP – Reader character is a milf whose son enters a contest to meet his favorite hero and wins. The author’s Aizawa is really good, and the scenes with the reader’s son are very realistic for maternal love. And, I cannot emphasize this enough, reader character is a milf. It’s incomplete, and hasn’t updated in a while, but the premise is so cute I can’t not include it.

Complete – Baby’s first hanahaki. Honestly a very cute little hanahaki – no angst or sads, just two idiots in love. A nice quick read.

But they're soft... by coffee_dessert (Aizawa/Reader)

Complete – Aizawa gets turned into a cat by a villain’s quirk, and the reader character takes care of him until it wears off. I’ve heard this premise is popular? But I haven’t seen too too many, and this one is very well executed. Aizawa’s characterization is solid, and the pacing is very good. A very sweet read.

**no grave to hold my body down by Hawnks (supermintfluff) ( @hawnks)(Shinsou/Reader)

Complete – Pro Hero Shinsou saves the reader character, and they keep running into each other. This one is a good character study on adult Shinsou, and Hawnks’ writing is always very clean and lovely. I recommend going through their entire selection.

Love Like You by Queen_Kai (Shinsou/Reader)

Complete – Color Soulmate AU with a villain reader. Very cute, and I adore Shinsou’s characterization in this one. I honestly wish there was more, but it stands on its own very well.

Naruto

**Maid with Benefits by awolangel (Akatsuki/Reader)

WIP – Reader is hired to be a live-in maid to the Akatsuki, and also have lots of sex. This fic is hilarious, and so well characterized. The pacing is actually really good, as well as the development of all of the relationships. There are some characters that get more attention than others, but we do get a nice spread. Very fun escapism fic.

Moonshine by Victopteryx ( @ancharan) (HashiMada)

Complete – Prohibition Era Bootlegging AU. Author’s handle on both Madara and Hashirama is incredible (and they draw their own fanart, and it’s also incredible). A whole-ass meal.

Tobirama Kicks Some Sense Into Konoha by allseer15 (Tobirama&Naruto Gen)

Complete – Tobirama gets sent back in time due to an accidental jutsu, and is horrified at the way Konoha is run, and promptly Rampages over it. Wonderful catharsis for anyone who wondered why it was okay for a rich-ass old man to just leave an infant a welfare check and a shitty apartment and dip out on his development even though he has the equivalent of a nuclear warhead in his upper intestine.

Misc

**Clouds by moriamithril (Star Wars Rogue One, Cassian Andor/Reader)

Complete – Reader character is a handler/assistant type figure to Cassian over a series of missions. We get a lot of emotions in this one – we get the tenderness of caring for someone who is ill, we get devotion, we get yearning, we get delicious jealousy. Well written and lovely.

Fresh Coat by scrapmetal (The Mandalorian, Boba & Din Gen)

Complete – Fantastic Boba and Din, the Mando culture representation we deserve. I’m love.

**A Far Greater Sin (Reader version) by Yavannie (The Mandalorian, Din Djarin/Reader)

Complete – Reader is a healer, and builds a relationship with Mando over the course of a couple decades. Great pacing, great RC development, and the author’s Mando is quite good. The premise/setting gives me wicked fantasy vibes, even though it’s obviously In Space, but that’s definitely a draw.

who's gonna save us now (when the ashes hit the ground) by chancellor_valdez (Ready or Not, Grace/Daniel)

Complete – My favorite of the “Grace and Daniel Survive Together” subgenere, this one is very raw with its emotions. There’s a lot of hurt, and there’s a lot of self-harming coping mechanisms. Recovery is ugly, and the author did a very good job showing us that. And their ending was lovely.

not your garden variety demon lord by rizahawkaye (Inuyasha, SanSessh)

Complete – Sango takes care of Rin sometimes, and gets confused when Sesshoumaru brings her gifts. The author’s Sessh is so good, and it’s a great exploration of a relationship we don’t see much of.

Mine Enemy by Ayrith (Inuyasha, InuSan)

Complete – I love this fic, okay. Fantastic character study in Sango and a lot of the rougher parts of her that canon shied away from, and the author’s Inuyasha characterization is fucking great. Just go read this, yes.

Frozen Plus One by Meowzy (Frozen, HansAnna)

WIP – Troll AU, ie the trolls cursed Hans and that’s why he is That Way. Look, this author has done such a good job with all of the characters. Their voices are very distinct, and it’s not a reach at all to see how it could have gone differently. And we get some sweet HansAnnaKris action, and it is just as we deserve. Honestly, this fic is so well written, it deserves the world.

Knives In by anomalation (Knives Out, Marta/Ransom)

Complete – My favorite of the Pen Pals subgenre, this one is a fantastic slow burn. Ransom is really forced to face himself, and Marta is such a babe. Meg makes a few appearances, and her confusion over her place in the world is really well done. A great enemies-to-lovers.

It's Not Anxiety, It's a Parasite by squadrickchestopher (Venom, Queer Eye)

Complete – Look, I’ve mentioned before, but I love a good Queer Eye fic. Eddie gets what he deserves, and the symbiote couldn’t be more happy. So funny and clever.

You Find Yourself in a Maze by FloaromaMeadow ( @zombiekaiba) (S0 Atem Gen)

Complete – Very short and very poignant, the style is modeled after text-based command games. It fits super well with the Season 0 aesthetic, and there’s so much punch in each command.

Eddie’s smile pops up, just briefly, a flash of white pixels as he looks down at his hands. “Okay,” he says.

Genuinely, I just love fics where Eddie visits Richie. Like, that alone for the premise of a fic has me hOOKED. But this fic has EVERYTHING - post clown depression, caring Stan Uris, getting your life together by leaving your wife, an amazing writing of Beverly--EVERYTHING.

2020 DCU Bang Guidelines and FAQs

Welcome to the DCU Bang!!

The DCU Bang is an opportunity for authors and fanworkers to create stories and fanworks, for any DCU characters or pairings!

General Information

What is the DCU Bang?

The DCU Big Bang/Mini-Bang is a writing challenge that prompts authors and fanworkers to work together to create a story and fanwork that go together. In this case, our fandom is the DC Universe, and our goal is 10,000/5,000 words!

We have two word goal options: 10,000 for the Big Bang and 5,000 words for the Mini Bang! Both Big Bang and Mini Bang stories are qualified to receive a fanwork through the claiming process.

Stories and fanworks must be posted, in their entirety, during the due date period. (Check the Schedule for when this is!) There will be no exceptions made to post on a schedule before the reveal date. If, for example, your story is 100k with 19 chapters, all 19 chapters and 100k words must be posted during the due date period and ready to be revealed by your chosen revealing date.

So, what's allowed for DCU Bang?

The easy answer to that is: pretty much anything DC Comics! We're open to slash, het, and gen, no matter your pairing preference. If you want to write Clark/Lex or Jason/Tim, that's awesome, and if you've got a great idea for an epic Batman/Catwoman or M'gann/Conner, that's perfectly acceptable as well. You can base your story off of any DCU medium or canon - so whether you’re a diehard Young Justice cartoon fan, into Smallville, or someone who loves the comics, you can participate! If you have a question about your pairing or specific idea, send an email to [email protected], and we'll discuss it with you on a case-by-case basis.

What about crossovers, fusions, and AUs?

The only requirement for DCU Bang is that the primary focus of your story be on at least one character from the DC Universe. If you want to write Batman in Ancient Rome or Superman as a new member of the Hawaii Five-0 task force, you are more than welcome to. However, if you want to write a crossover that focuses on Harry Potter being a new member of the Justice League, this is not the place for it. The focus must be on a DC character. Crossovers with other comics fandoms are allowed, but the focus has to be on the DC character.

Can I write original characters?

If they are a minor character, yes! Even more important characters, such as Batman protecting an original female character, are acceptable, so long as it is from Batman’s POV and the story isn’t explicitly about this original female character. A work that features, for example, an original character journalist doing an in-depth piece on Superman is also allowed, as the work would focus on Superman, not the journalist.

A work wherein your original character joins the Justice League, or exists within Gotham, or is the child of a DCU character would not be acceptable for this Bang. We want to keep the focus on DCU characters as much as possible!

--Be kind to each other! We all like different things and rudeness for liking/disliking a pairing, characters, any canon, genre, or kink, etc. will not be tolerated! We want everyone to feel welcome here!!!

--Please provide an email address that you frequently check. The mods need a good email address in the case that contact is needed, such as during story/fanworker claims, or for clarification purposes. All important announcements are sent out via email, as well. In the event that you change your email during the duration of the DCU Bang, it is your responsibility to update your email address with the mods! Your email address will ONLY ever be used for official DCU Bang business.

--Please keep in contact with the mods and your author/fanworker partner, if you're working with one! Dropping contact causes a lot of frustration for everyone. If something comes up and you need to drop out at any stage, that's okay! Just let the mods know! Needing to dropout before the final default date is not a bannable offense, and even if the default date has passed, please let the mods know, so we can work something out. You can contact the mods at any time via email at [email protected].

--Authors and fanworkers MUST respond to all mod inquiries and all mandatory check-ins. Participants that disappear without contacting the mods are subject to being banned for one round from the Bang. Missing two mandatory check-ins in a row will cause a participant to be considered dropped from the Bang, which could result in a ban, if no contact with a mod is made.

--Dropping out after the grace period, which is a 2 week timeframe (July 18th-August 1st) after story claiming has concluded, can result in being banned from the next round of DCU Bang, especially without discussing things with the mods prior to this. Please do not just disappear on us! We really are willing to work with you, but we can’t help if we don’t know there is a problem!

--The 2020 due date for all works is October 25th through October 31st, when the DCU Bang 2020 Ao3 collection will open. Works posted during this timeframe will be hidden and revealed on the date that is selected on October 1st. If you do not post by the 31st of October, the mods will send out a reminder. If you cannot post by the 31st, but still wish to finish the Bang, the amnesty posting period is from November 22nd to November 30th. Any participant that has not posted by November 30th will be considered as dropped out or incomplete.

Traditional, Tandem, and Solo Path Information

These are the paths used at the time of sign-ups. They are not binding until after story claiming takes place, in July. IE, if you sign-up as a Traditional Author and find a fanworker to pair up with as a Tandem Team, just let the mods know and we will switch that for you! Or, if you sign-up as Solo Author and want to switch to Traditional, no problem, just let us know! Any path can be switched at any point before story claiming, so please reach out to us via [email protected] if you want to switch paths!

Traditional Path:

The traditional sign-up is the one that most Bang-type challenges follow. You sign up as an author, write your story and submit your rough draft/summary according to the schedule. Your story will go up for blind fanworker claims. After that, the mods will match up the authors and fanworkers via email. (It’s very important to sign up with an email that you check frequently!!!) Authors will send their story to their fanworkers(s) and discuss and collaborate on what they would like to do!

--Traditional track authors and fanworkers that drop out after the last default date has passed could be subject to a ban from the Bang for the next round. Three bans in a row could result in a permanent ban from DCU Bang. The last date to drop out for the DCU Bang 2020 round is August 1st. Any drop outs after this point will be subject to banning.*** We don't want to leave authors or fanworkers hanging after working so hard!

***An author or fanworker can unban themselves by completing their story or fanwork before signing up for the next round! Please contact me after completing the fanwork or fic, so that I can update the records and unban you.

--Rough drafts are due July 1st-8th***. Your work must be about 60% finished before turning in a rough draft. The minimum word counts that will be accepted are 6,000 words for the 10k Big Bang and 3,000 words for the 5k Mini Bang.

***Only authors wishing to submit their story for claiming need to submit a rough draft. Solo and tandem authors do not submit rough drafts.

Tandem Path:

A tandem sign-up is when an author and fanworker choose to sign-up together. This way, the fanworker will be able to work with the author throughout the entire process and have more time to complete their fanwork(s). If an author or fanworker want to work with each other, after one or both have already signed up, no problem! Just send me a message and I will get that updated!

This is a great option for fanworkers and authors that want to have more time working together. The Discord server will have channels set up so that fanworkers and authors wanting to work longer together can find a partner!

--Tandem author/fanworker teams can drop out together*** at any time, so long as they contact the mods to let them know. Disappearing without contacting the mods is subject to a one round ban!

***If an author or fanworker wishes to continue in the Bang after the grace period has passed, their fanworker or author partner could be subject to a ban, unless the remaining participant wishes to switch over to the solo track.

Solo Path:

A solo author/fanworker is someone who wants the structure of a Bang challenge without having to work with someone else to create an accompanying fanwork. By working alone, you don't have to worry about whether you complete your project or not because you won't have a partner depending on you. You can also decide to do your own fanwork or find your own partner to work with. Basically, I won't be matching you with a fanworker or an author, but you can still have a fic with fanwork if you arrange it yourself.

It will also be possible for solo-author/solo-fanworkers to change their mind, should they feel capable of completing their works in time for posting! Please do not choose to switch from solo if you are not confident you can complete your story/fanwork. If, after switching from solo and you are not able to complete your story/fanwork and you have been paired with an fanworker/author, you will be banned from participating next year. We don’t want to leave anyone hanging!

--Solo authors/fanworkers can drop out at any time, so long as they contact the mod to let them know. Disappearing without contacting the mod is subject to a one round ban!

Undecided:

If, at the time of sign-ups, you're unsure of which path to select, no worries! No paths are binding until after the story claiming process takes place. Mods will be reaching out to participants before story claims to confirm with participants that chose undecided at the time of sign-ups which path they would like to continue with.

Author Info/Story Requirements and Guidelines

--Authors can work with a co-author or a group, just make sure to sign-up all authors on the sign-up sheet and have everyone join the comm if they wish. The limit of two stories per author still stands even if all the stories are co-written.

--Authors can sign up to do two stories. Both times for the Big Bang, or both times for the Mini Bang, or one Mini Bang and one Big Bang! To sign up twice, fill out the sign up form(s) twice!

What requirements are there for stories?

--All stories must focus on or revolve around a DCU character or pairing of your choosing!

--All stories must be complete by the due date period. Please check the schedule for when this will be.

--The minimum word count for the Traditional Bang is 10k. There is no maximum word limit, but please be aware of time constraints and obligations, if you’ve chosen to be paired up with a fanworker. IE don’t try to write a 100k story and choose to be paired with a fanworker if you’re not certain can finish it on time!

--The minimum word count for the Mini-Bang is 5k. There is no maximum word limit, but please be aware of time constraints and obligations, if you’ve chosen to be paired up with a fanworker. IE don’t try to write a 100k story and choose to be paired with a fanworker if you’re not certain can finish it on time!

***Only authors wishing to submit their story for claiming need to submit a rough draft. Solo and tandem authors do not submit rough drafts.

--All stories must be posted to Ao3! Once the collection reveals, stories can be posted anywhere else the author chooses.

--Stories must not be posted before the due date! Posting guidelines will go live in October, before the due date period.

--Starting for 2019, beta readers are no longer mandatory! However, you must edit your work for at least spelling and grammar and submitted stories found to have excessive spelling and grammar issues will be asked to edit, or be removed from the collection. Consequences for this will be handled on a case-by-case basis and can include being banned from participation in the next round. Beta readers are still strongly recommended to use.

We suggest finding a beta sooner rather than later, and here is the 2018's DCU Bang Beta Reader Resources Post. If you want to have more than one person beta read your story, that's fine, too!

Works in Progress:

--All submissions for the DCU Bang must be new works***. Any unposted fic that conforms to the rest of the rules qualifies for this Bang, even if it's an old, unposted idea that's been collecting dust for 10 years!

***The only exception for submitting previously posted works that you wish to continue is if BOTH of the following criteria are met:

A) less than 2,000 words have been posted for stories submitted for the 10k Traditional Bang. Less than 1,000 words have been posted for stories submitted for the 5k Mini-Bang. This means that at least 80% of the material is new for the Bang. The 2k/1k rule holds even if the finished work ends up 100k.

B) no further updates are made until the posting date and the entire work must be posted in its completed form on the chosen posting date.

Can I submit a story I have already started?

That depends! Stories and fanworks have to be new for the DCU Bang. If you've written something that's 10k/5k already and posted it, awesome! However, this is a chance to create something new (or finish an unposted WIP), so if your story has been posted elsewhere in its entirety, it doesn't qualify for this challenge.

If you have never posted the story anywhere, it qualifies for this Bang, even if you started writing it 10 years ago!

What if I've already posted part of a fic? Can I finish it for this challenge?

The purpose of this Bang is to unveil a brand-new, completed piece on your posting date, however we are okay with you finishing your piece as long as you have not posted more than 2,000 words for the 10k Traditional Big Bang or 1,000 words for the 5k Mini-Bang and do not post any more until your posting date. Since this Bang has a minimum word count of 10,000/5,000 words we are asking that no more than 2,000/1,000 words be posted prior to signing up, so that at least 80% of the fic is new.

Please note that the 2,000/1,000 word limit still holds no matter how long your finished fic is - even if you complete a 100k epic, you can only submit it for this Bang if you've published less than 2,000/1,000 words of it before signing up for this challenge!

What about a sequel or a prequel to an already posted fic?

Prequels/sequels to stories you've written and posted are acceptable! If you write a prequel/sequel, be sure to link back to the original story, so people can read that as well. =D

Fanworker and Fanwork Requirements

--Fanworkers that sign-up are not required to claim a story. Claims are a few months off from author sign-ups, and we understand that life can happen and you may not be able to claim a story as planned, this is totally fine! Just let us know that you’re dropping out and you’re good to go!

--The minimum amount of accompanying fanworks per eligible story is 1 piece. If you are a fanworker and choose to claim 3 stories, that means you will need to create 1 fanwork for each story, 3 total. Please do not take on more stories than you can handle!

--Fanworkers can claim as many stories as they are reasonably certain they can handle. Please do not take on 5 stories to create a fanwork for unless you are reasonably certain you can finish all 5 fanworks!

--All fanworks must be complete by the due date period. Please check the schedule for when this will be.

--Fanworks must not be posted before the due date! Posting guidelines will go live in October, before the due date period.

What counts as a fanwork?

Lots of things! Traditional art, digital art, manips, banners, icons, wallpaper, gifs sets, picspam, vids, and fanmixes (with cover art) are all fine. If you want to check that what you have in mind is appropriate, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post. We'll discuss it on a case-by-case basis.

Here are the suggested guidelines:

Manips: Clean renders and non-blurry images that do not contain watermarks should be used for photo manipulation. Examples of the quality expected for this Bang can be found right here on Fanlore.

Banners or Icons or Wallpaper: 5 icons, of at least 100x100 pixels. 3 banners. 1 wallpaper. More is of course always welcomed!

Picspam or Gifsets: At least 6 images, but more images, or multiple sets are welcome!

Vids: At least one minute long, or a full song!

Fanmixes: At least 10 songs and include cover art (this can be a manip!).

DCU Bang FAQs

Do I need a DreamWidth/LiveJournal/Tumblr/Twitter/Ao3 account?

The only account that is required at this point is Archive of Our Own. The reason for this is that all stories will be posted to the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection, rather than being posted to the DreamWidth/LiveJournal communities, as in years past. After being posted to Ao3 and being approved for the collection, you’re free to post your story/fanwork anywhere you wish!

What are check-ins?

Check-ins are a way to see how you’re doing on your work! Some of them are mandatory and some of them are not, so it’s important to keep track of which ones are mandatory! They’re also a great way to keep yourself on track and a time to talk about your work and let others know how you’re doing. If an author does not respond to 2 mandatory check-ins, they will be considered dropped from the current Bang!

What is the grace period?

The grace period is one last chance to allow authors or fanworkers to drop out of the Bang without consequences, after claims have been made. It is a very short period, from July 18th to August 1st so it is very important to communicate to the mods if you are needing to drop out during this time, for any reason! It is also possible to drop down to the solo track during the grace period as well, but this must be discussed with the mods.

Can I drop out?

Yes! Sometimes life gets in the way or a story just doesn’t happen, and we understand that! However, there is a cutoff point, and if you do not let the mods know before this date, you can be banned from the next round. Even if it is after this cutoff date that you need to drop out please let us know so that we can discuss options. We can’t help if we don’t know there is a problem! Dropping all contact with mods after the cutoff date is grounds for an automatic ban, as we can’t help at that point. Please get in contact with us, so that we can arrange for a fanwork if needed!

Solo participants are free to drop out at any point, without consequence. Tandem fanworker/author groups can also drop out at any point together without consequences.

What can I do if I have problems with my author/fanworker?

Contact the mods! Let us handle things as we understand that sometimes people just don’t get along. Abuse or rude behaviour toward any participant in the DCU Bang will not be tolerated, especially for story/fanwork content. (It’s important for fanwork to read all the warnings in a story summary, and for authors to list all warnings in their story summary!) Please just get in contact with us mods to resolve issues between participants, rather than disappearing.

If an author or fanworker needs to drop out from the DCU Bang, after story claims have happened, there is a limited grace period to do so, please keep track of the schedule. If a fanworker needs to drop out, the author’s story(s) will go out for pinch hits, so that they still receive a fanwork.

When do I post my story?

For 2020, October 25th-31st is the “due date”***. Rather than choosing a single day that all works are due, we will be giving everyone 5 days to get their works into the Ao3 collection before reveals happen. This allows more flexibility for authors and fanworkers to check over their works on Ao3 before going live and being revealed. This also allows the mods to check over works to make sure they are complete. Do not submit works that are incomplete. If your work is not complete, it could be revealed before you are ready for it to be revealed and no one wants that! Authors are welcome to submit their works and do minor editing and polishing while they wait for their reveal date to come. Please contact the mods if you will not be able to post your story between October 25th-31st, so that we can help you decide if you can post during the amnesty period or not!

***Why the change from a long posting period? Frankly, it got to be a lot to handle and keep track of and after doing research and looking at many other Bang setups, this is fairly close to how they are run as well. It’s also more fair to participants to have a solid due date, rather than some participants getting nearly 2 extra months to work on their projects.

What is the reveal date?

The reveal date will be whatever you choose on October 1st, this is not to be confused with the due date, which is October 25th-31st. The official reveal period will run between November 1st and November 14th. If you will not have your work completed and polished in this time, please do not post to the Ao3 collection, contact the mods instead to discuss things and set up for amnesty posting instead! We’re here to help and work with you, but we cannot help if you do not contact us!

Can I post my chapters before my chosen reveal date?

Your complete work must be posted in its entirety on your chosen reveal date.

E.g.: You have chosen November 10th for your reveal date, and your story is 100k with 19 chapters. All 19 chapters and 100k words must be ready to be revealed on November 10th. There will be no exceptions made to post on a schedule. All participants must post their completed works on their chosen reveal date, or during the amnesty period.

What is the amnesty period?

The amnesty period is a chance for participants that couldn't quite finish on time to have one last chance to post for the current Bang! If for any reason you cannot post on your chosen reveal date, please get in contact with the mods ASAP!

Where can I post my story?

Anywhere you wish, so long as it is also in the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection. Posting it there is how we will count your work as completed***.

***Fanworkers will not be required to post to Ao3, though it is highly encouraged. (Ao3 isn’t great for hosting some types of fanworks, like picspam or gif sets, we understand that!) If you are not posting your fanwork to Ao3, you must make sure the link to where your fanwork is posted is provided to the author and linked within the author notes or story.

Can I sign up to write more than one story?

Sure! You can sign-up to write up to two different stories for this challenge. If you do want to write two stories make sure to sign-up separately for both. If you have to drop one or both make sure to contact the mods before rough drafts are due so that you don't leave an fanworkers hanging!!! If you have to drop either story after the final dropping date, you could be banned for the next round!

Can I sign up as an author AND a fanworker?

If you want to, more power to you! That's awesome! If you wish to create a fanwork for your story only, you can sign up as a solo-author, and it will be entirely up to you to create a fanwork for your story! By signing up as a fanworker, you are offering to create a fanwork for someone else’s story during the claiming period, so if your intent is to create for your own story only, sign up as a solo-author!

And again! Please do not take on more than you can handle!!! If, for at any reason, you do not believe you can continue, as a fanworker or an author, contact me ASAP!

I'm interested, but I'm not sure what to write.

There is a channel in the DCU Bang Discord server, just for prompts! Anyone can leave a prompt, and anyone can take a prompt. If six authors choose to write from the same prompt, that's totally fine. If someone wants to mash three prompts together, that's also fine. If someone wants to use half of a prompt, that's fine. Sensing a trend yet? =D

This also means, should you choose to leave a prompt, it is for anyone to use, in whichever way they want. If there is an idea that you want done in a very specific manner, it may not be the best for you to leave it for this Bang, as all authors are free to use prompts however they see fit.

I’ve been banned or think I have been banned, what can I do?

Contact the mods! The quickest way is via email, [email protected], or by messaging LuciferxDamien on the DCU Bang Discord server. If you have been banned for not completing your story/fanwork, we might be able to work something out, but be prepared to have something completed in return! To unban yourself, complete the story/fanwork you had promised in the previous round and let the mod know via email or Discord.

If you were banned for a reason other than not completing your story/fanwork, please still contact us and we can discuss things further. We’re very willing to work with people!

Wayfaring, Rainfallen An accidental series centered on the same basic headcanon of how Gendry found himself in the North and how Arya found her way back to it. - wolf girl Wolf Girl WOLF GIRL

8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you like it.

“That’s not all you know,” [Marcia] said quietly after a moment. “You know how to sail and build things, and you know a lot about navigating and explosives. And you saved a lot of people’s lives on Ashman. Seems like you know a lot of things.”

Rob ‘Em glanced at her, his one blue eye rippling with a murky emotion she couldn’t quite identify. Then he offered a weak smile. “...Who be ye and what have ye done with Marcia Blair?”

Marcia glared at him. “What, I can’t give you a compliment?”

Rob ‘Em’s smile grew, gaining more of his usual wryness. “That be me girl.”

The college student scoffed, and the pirate chuckled.

“But honestly...thank you,” he said seriously. “I admit, I’ve kinda always wanted to be more than what I be -- y’know, a pirate -- but I never really saw me chance until I met ye lubbers. Ye may be more honest than I be used to...but ye be a good crew, and I be lucky t’ have ye.”

Marcia raised an eyebrow at him. “Who are you and what have you done with Rob ‘Em Iwerks?”

The red-haired pirate laughed. “All right -- I deserved that one.”

“You did,” Marcia assented. But she smiled nonetheless.

This is a piece of a larger conversation in my Disney mega-crossover fic TrueMagic (specifically chapter 20) between two original characters -- main character Marcia Blair and her “lancer,” a rogue pirate called Robert “Rob ‘Em” Iwerks. Both characters had many influences, but they are named for my parents, who even after getting divorced have remained good friends. Even though Marcia and Rob ‘Em develop a romance of sorts, I always wanted their relationship to be built on a very strong, mutually respectful friendship...so when I wrote Marcia and Rob together, I wanted them to develop the same strong camaraderie I’ve seen in my parents when they spend time together, even if they, like my parents, are so different personality-wise. This scene -- this simple, quiet moment where these two characters could just talk and mess around and bond on board Rob ‘Em’s sailboat, the Katrina -- was one I’d so looked forward to writing for so long that I actually used as a “carrot” for myself to encourage me to write another chapter, as in “once you write this chapter, you’ll be that much closer to that scene!” And yeah, when I finally reached it, it flowed out of me so naturally.

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

Oh dear -- um...I feel absolutely awful saying this, but I really haven’t read that much fanfiction as of late. All of my time’s kind of just been on the writing side of things. I could maybe suggest some fanfictions I’ve read and enjoyed, though, even if I haven’t read all of their authors’ stuff?

31. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

Je respecte ze canon, yes. The way I see it, if you want to tell a story based on the property in question, then it’s because you love the property in question, so naturally you would want to include what makes that thing what it is in your work. Now of course you can change some things or events in an AU setting, but I myself feel the need to really justify why things are different and, if applicable, put a spotlight on what made those things different. (Example: In TrueMagic, Snow White’s Prince is named Ferdinand after one of the film’s concept artists Ferdinand Horvath, even though he wasn’t named that in his original film or even in old story drafts. Thus, in the story, Ferdinand signing autographs as simply “the Prince” is addressed and his lack of a name is quickly referenced as a meta joke.)

TRSB19: Final Check In, Plus Posting, Pinch Hit and Treating Info

Goooood morning, TRSB-ers!

Today is the day - final check in. (Insert appropriately dramatic music here.)

This reminder is going to be long - to save your eyes if you're in a rush, the key message for writers is, please check in within the next 24 hours to tell us you're on course to post your fic in the AO3 collection by 25th August. As mentioned in the last check in email and the original posted schedule, if you don't check in this time you will be automatically defaulted and you will not be permitted to take part next year. (A couple of you have checked in ahead of time, which is fine, you don't need to check in again.)

Artists, if you haven't already, please supply your final art to your writers unless you've agreed another arrangements. Writers, if you have an art-related problem, please speak up now!

Posting Fic

We're sure you know the drill by now, but fics should be in the collection, with the artwork embedded, linked or appropriately credited, by 25th August*. The AO3 collection is over here.

Fics must be complete. If you're still making edits, please post anyway; we aren't checking your grammar, just that there is a complete fic for each artwork that meets the word count minimum. Placeholders will be removed.

Again, if you miss this date or submit incomplete fic, your claimed art will be reassigned to a pinch hitter and you will not be able to take part next year.

If you are having an unexpected life emergency and anticipate a problem with the deadline, please tell us ahead of the 25th and we will do what we can to help!

*In reality you may have a few hours' grace. Due to work commitments and time differences, the mods are unlikely to be checking the collection until around 1200 BST/CET on the 26th. However, please make every effort to observe the official deadline!

Posting Art

As per the FAQ, artists are responsible for posting their own artwork and supplying the link to their writer ahead of posting on the 25th. Yes, we know this means that depending on how you go about things, the art may be revealed approximately a week before the fics. This isn't breaching the rules so please don't worry.

Please discuss posting logistics in your pairs - e.g. are you embedding the artwork in the fic, linking in the story notes, other? It is up to each pair to decide how to do this; the mods are not responsible for sorting this out!

There are several options commonly used when posting an Author/Artist collaboration: “Co-Authors”: Creating a single AO3 work with both the Author and Artist listed as Co-Authors, with the artwork embedded into the story. (If you’re going with this option, the images need to be hosted somewhere because AO3 doesn’t offer image hosting. Please don’t use Tumblr hotlinks if you can help it. If you change your url, the links will die and sometimes they die anyway because Tumblr, so please choose something more reliable. Contact us if you need help with image hosting.) “Inspired By”: The Artist creates an AO3 work for their artwork, and the Author posts their fic to AO3 as a work inspired by another work – this is a good option if your team prefers not to embed the artwork into the story “Gift”: The Author creates an AO3 work, gifts the work to the Artist and either embeds the artwork or includes a link to wherever the artist has chosen to post their artwork (eg: Tumblr, Deviantart, Dreamwidth or Livejournal, etc.)

Tumblr Promotional Posts

This caused some confusion last year. Hopefully this year the instructions are clearer, but please get in touch with any questions ASAP.

To ensure the fruits of your collaboration get the love and admiration they deserve, one of your pair (it’s up to you who) should create a Tumblr promotional post after August 25th but before Sept 1st, advertising the amazing results of your collaboration. The TRSB Tumblr blog will be reblogging these in staggered schedule until around Sept 10th, to ensure maximum exposure for each team.

The Tumblr promotional post should contain:

A SFW crop of the artwork, or a story banner (note: Whole art pieces should only be included if the artist is posting the masterpost and if the art is SFW)

Fic title and AO3 link

Link to the artwork if posted separately

Links to Author’s and Artist’s tumblrs and/or AO3 accounts

Treats can be added to the collection any time between now and reveals (Sept 1st). A treat can be any length from a semi-drabble to a full blown novel (though if you can write a full blown novel before Sept 1st, Mod Narya would love to know your secret).

If you don't have access to the gallery, please get in touch with the mods and we will sort this out for you. The sign up form for writing treats is here. You don't have to be signed up to write a treat; this just helps the mods monitor which artwork we can expect fics for.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What’s a fanwork exchange? A fanwork exchange is where a group of authors and artists sign up to create fanworks for one another. Everyone that has signed up will create at least one fanwork and receive at least one fanwork.

2. So what’s this exchange about? This exchange is meant to celebrate all characters and relationships in the Person of Interest fandom, whether the pairing is canon, non-canon, or sheer crack.

3. So let’s say I’m interested. What would be required of me, if I decided to participate? You will sign up to create one fanwork (fanfic, fanart, fanvid, podfic, remix). This exchange will be run entirely through Ao3, so you must have an Ao3 account to participate. If you don’t have an account, contact a mod for assistance.

All fanfics written for the exchange have to be a minimum of 1,000 words. There is no maximum word count. Fics cannot be part of a series – they must be able to stand alone.

Art can be computer or hand drawn and must be complete. Manips are allowed as art, but must be complete and not simply a screenshot with a filter on it.

Fanvids must be either: one complete song, or a medley of songs lasting at least one minute.

Podfic: When requesting a podfic, please choose an existing work which is less than 5,000 words in length. If you’d like a podfic of a work you have written yourself, add the ‘Podfic Welcome’ tag to those fics so your podficcer knows which to choose from. Mention that you have done this in your signup, alongside any prompts. Please note: by adding the 'Podfic Welcome’ tag for the purpose of this exchange, that counts as permission without further notice. This is an alternative to a blanket permission statement. which makes all your works open for transformation. Because the exchange is anonymous, it’s difficult for podficcers to contact authors to ask specific permission to record. Bearing that in mind, if you’re requesting podfic of a work that someone else has written, please make sure the author is comfortable with their stories being recorded before you make that request.

Remixes: What is a remix? When requesting a remix of an existing fic, please choose a work which is less than 5,000 words in length. Please ensure that you are truly happy for your work to be rewritten by someone else. If the author is not you, make sure they are happy to have their works remixed before you make that request. In your signup, you can provide ideas for how you would like works to be remixed, as in “I’d like to see this scene from Carter’s PoV instead”, but your creator does not have to follow those prompts exactly if they have other ideas. However, they must respect and avoid your list of Do Not Wants. When creating a remix, please be respectful in your author notes (i.e. don’t say: “the original was out-of-character so I fixed it”).

4. Okay, so how do I create a fanwork for this? How do I know what to create?

The exchange runs through several different parts:

4-1. Nominations: March 23-27 By default, all canonical Ao3 tags associated with the Person of Interest fandom will be included. The nominations period is for non-canonical tags, e.g., rarer relationships and characters.

Unlike last year, we will be grouping relationships and characters together in a single box to make matching easier.

When nominating characters, please use the format Character: First Last. An example would be Character: Zoe Morgan.

When nominating platonic (e.g. gen fic) relationships, please use the format Character A & Character B.

When nominating romantic relationships, please use the format Character A/Character B.

To see what is already considered canonical, you can view the Person of Interest tags page.

4-2. Signups: March 27-April 7 You must fill out at least three requests and three offers. Each request and offer should be a unique character or relationship, but you may have as much overlap between your requests and offers as you like. You may also give multiple ideas per character or relationship in your prompt.

Please note that while the box will be labeled “Relationships”, you will also need to place your character requests/offers here.

For your sign ups, please go into some detail about what you would like; this helps give the creator of your work some different ideas about what they could make for you. You can put this information in the Ao3 signup form, or in a letter on a third party site, or some combination of both.

Good things to list: general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, squicks/triggers/do-not-wants, or anything else you’d like the writer to know. Make sure you list things you definitely do not want. Authors and artists are absolutely forbidden to ignore squicks and triggers. Otherwise, the only guideline of your prompt they are unequivocally beholden to is the requested pairing, though they are encouraged to take your preferences into consideration. Here’s an example:

Root/Shaw: I really wish they could have hooked up for real once before the series was over. I’d love to see them spending a night together – whether tender or rough!

4-3. Matching: April 7th After sign ups are completed, the mods will begin to match people based on their interests. You are guaranteed to have a match by April 7th. If you do not have a match by then, please contact the mods.

Once matching is complete, you will receive an email with your assignment. You will be assigned to write or draw for someone who requested at least one of the characters/relationships that you offered to write or draw for. Since everyone must put in at least five requests, it is likely that your assignment will include characters/relationships that you did not offer.

4-4. Create a fanwork: April 7th-May 19th After you receive your assignment, you should select one of the characters/relationships in your assignment that interests you and start working on your fanwork. The character/relationship does not have to be the one you signed up with – if there’s something else that catches your eye, you’re most welcome to run with it! You will have six weeks to complete your assignment. Again, you must honor any squicks/triggers/do-not-wants listed by your recipient.

You must remain anonymous (e.g., not let your recipient know who is creating for them) during this period. If you have any questions to pose to your recipient and are not sure how to go about it, you can ask a mod for help. If you don’t know where to find a beta, there will be a post on the Dreamwidth community where people will offer to beta read for this exchange.

4-5. Posting: April 7th-May 19th All stories and art must be posted by May 19th. You may continue to edit your fanwork until May 26th, but it is imperative that you have a complete work submitted on May 19th. The mods will then go through posted fanworks to make sure that they are not placeholders (e.g. garbage text, incomplete stories, un-altered screenshots, etc.). You may post your story or art earlier without impunity.

4-5. Reveals: May 26th-June 2nd All stories and art will be revealed anonymously on May 26th. You must have your final draft up by this time. Creators will be revealed on June 2nd; after this point, you may post your fic or art on your own blog or other third-party websites.

5. Uh…crap. So it looks like I bit off more than I can chew. Uh… can I just… not post anything? If you think you might have to default, please do so before May 19th. This is to give pinch hitters time to create works, ready for the collection to go live on May 26th. If you default after May 19th, reveals may be delayed for everyone.

6. I’m not sure I can commit to the full challenge, but I’d like to write/draw something. Is there anything I can do? Yes! You may join the Pinch Hitter list and write fics or draw art for people who default. You may also sign up as a Beta reader or write treats.

7. What exactly is a treat? Who can create treats? A treat is any fanwork created for this exchange that is not a participant’s assignment. You can create treats for anyone who is participating – you don’t need to be signed up to write a treat. You can also create a treat for your recipient if there’s two prompts that really grabbed your attention. Treats have no minimum word count but must follow the same rules about squicks/triggers/do-not-wants.

Fanfiction Writer Appreciation Recs

I’ve seen a bunch of people doing these, and i really wanted to too. I may be late to the party here, but I hope I can point you towards some cool stuff to check out. Most of what I read in the fanfiction circle is Gravity Falls, so this post is mostly just multi chapter fics from the Gravity Falls fandom! I might do one for one-shots, and I’m sorry if I forget any major ones, but this is what immediately comes to mind that I highly recommend.

Reverse Portal AU at it’s best! The Reverse Portal AU was popular for a while (almost on par with Blind Faith) and a lot of people tried to grab onto the idea, but after all this time, it just seems to have left a lot of incomplete works in it’s wake. That is not the case here. It’s still going, but it shows no sign of stopping until it tells it’s entire story. And this story has been insanely detailed and well executed. Retelling almost the entire series as if Ford was the one taking care of the kids, and the dilemmas he faces with the fact that Stan is stuck on the other side of the portal. Not to mention most of the jokes are on point with something you’d hear in Gravity Falls. The author is someone I am proud to call my friend, and that all started when this fic was recommended to me.

30 Seconds Later by @invisibletinkerer

A pretty recent one that i really hope gets more attention. I’ve seen people do fanart and stuff of Ford being the same age as when he got sucked into the portal, while his home dimension and Stan aged, but I didn’t really see much potential for a full story in that idea. That changes with this fic, which again is still ongoing, but updates fairly regularly. The interactions between the Grunkle Stan we know and love and a Ford who is still fresh from his sleep deprived paranoia days, and still susceptible to Bill’s possession brings so much engaging conflict that i cannot get enough of!

My Demons by @kazriku

An oldie but a goodie. This one is basically a Mystery Trio story that focuses mostly on Stan and Ford, and the first chapter was written before A Tale of Two Stans came out. Adjustments were made after that episode came out, but this fic is very much telling it’s own story on how the Stans became so distant, and the incident that lead to Ford being trapped on the other side of the portal. Filled with mysterious suspense and some entertaining brotherly bonding, even if it hasn’t updated in a while, if we’re talking about fanfics I appreciate, there was no way i couldn’t include this one. It was the first major GF Fanfic I read from the person who would become my first mutual, and chances are this fic lead to me reading all the ones you see here!

By the skin of your teeth by @apathetic-revenant

I didn’t realize just how popular this one was until today, but it deserves it. It’s so good! When Stan gets into his argument with Ford after Ford calls him for the first time in 10 years, he realizes that something's wrong with Ford. He’s very sick and his house is a wreck. There is so much tension and angst in this one as Stan puts the pieces together about what’s been going on with his brother, and Ford continuing to fight what seems like a losing battle. There’s a happy ending, but it takes quite a bit to get there, and it is glorious!

And Then There Were Three by @kalajorn

I’m just going to say it. This is one of my favorite Mystery Trio stories. Ever! With an author who I think really is under the radar in the community. Mystery Trio is probably my favorite AU for Gravity Falls, but depending on who you ask, it either got stronger or weaker once A Tale of Two Stans came out. For me, it only got stronger, and this fic is an excellent example of why. I adore the scenario presented here of how Stan and Ford eventually reunite. How there is some spark of their connection as brothers still there, but there are still forces interfering with that, and using the material from canon to build some great tension. Updates take some time, but i promise you it’s worth it. This story only gets more engaging with each chapter and i’m hoping it’ll stay that way.

Impish is really a beacon of life for the GF fandom. Regularly producing high quality content of all kinds. I could have put any number of her stories on here. If you miss Gravity Falls, and you want to reminisce about it over a weekend, scroll through her AO3. You’ll find a lot to enjoy. But one of my personal favorites is this compilation of fics surrounding the Feral Ford AU. An AU that vanished as quickly as it arrived. I was even going to write something small on it, but i just never got to it. Anyway, these stories of a paranoid, almost animalistic Ford from what trauma he faced on the other side of the portal is just so powerful. Every idea has a new obstacle. Sometimes it’s comforting. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking. But there’s always something to grab your attention and not let go. I come back to these a lot, and they are always a great read.

I’d also recommend her Mystery Trio fic Phobos, but that one hasn’t updated for a while. But I still really like it so here ya go!

Maybe it’s Not Too Late by @rum-and-shattered-dreams

Why was this one so hard to find? It’s awesome! One of the reasons I’ve dived so deeply into Gravity Falls fanfiction more then any other fandom I’ve been in, is because even after the official shows credits rolled, it still left us with so much potential for what other adventures were out there. And this is one of the best examples of that. It’s a great, insanely engaging post series adventure involving pretty much the entire main cast and the return of the Shapeshifter, with Fiddleford and Ford as the main focus. Yes, it is partly a Ship Fic, which I’m not crazy about, but I don’t really find it distracting. There is so much in this story, and the shipping is just another element of it. And FiddAuthor is one of the ships I tolerate more, so I don’t really mind that much. The rest is just too dang good!!

Better Kept Secret by BadonKaDank

Another one that nearly alluded my radar until a friend mentioned it to me back when it had just completed, and I’m glad they did because this story is AMAZING! Having someone from one of the boys’ past come back for revenge is another premise that was circulating for a while that I freaking adored!! There were a few good pieces of writing out there on this (and even a comic currently going on), but this fic is at the top of the chart for me. Filled with drama, action, intense and suspenseful moments, it’s one that really stuck with me that i can’t believe I almost missed.

Goodnight Stanley by Kitsunesocks

I haven’t seen many people mention this one, and while it may not be the most angst filled story involving the Stan Bros, it’s still a great one. Without giving too much away, while Stan and Ford are getting ready to head back to Gravity Falls, they discover that Bill might not be entirely gone, and that he may be plotting a way to come back right under their noses. Despite how common it is, this is a premise I’ve never been crazy about. I think @thesnadger Axolotl is the only story like this to engage me past the first chapter. Except this one. This is a great adventure of a story. The pacing is excellent and the characters are on point. Some of the most accurate I think I’ve seen in a Gravity Falls fic. I especially appreciate how proactive Dipper and Mabel are in this story. A lot of fics like this tend to push them to the side to make room for the Stans. But this story makes good use of everyone involved. It’s not the most emotionally driven story out there, but it’s one of the most well put together stories I’ve seen in a GF fic.

Blind Faith by @pinesinthewoods

Oh my God! This one! I originally wasn’t going to include this one because I know the author is no longer active in the fandom, but again, appreciation post. And this story deserves to be appreciated no matter what. You all know this AU, where Stan and Ford both wind up on the other side of the portal, and have to face the horrors on the other side together. Blind Faith was already fairly popular at this point, but this story propelled it to something else. Something stronger. Something with depth. Leaving you with chills as you finish every chapter. Aside from My Demons, this is probably the first fanfic I was checking for updates on, daily. This brought many new ideas to the AU that you still see in the occasional new content today, and that is something truly special. This is from yet another author who I am proud to call a friend, and it’s weird to think that back then, I was just a fan of something a lot of other people were. I’m sure most of you have read this one, but if you haven’t, go read it! It’s one of the best out there.

Stanley McGucket by @thelastspeecher

This is the sort of fic I don’t normally care for. Tons of original characters and a lot of shipping. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just not for me. But the premise was just too intriguing to resist. The idea of Stan being offered a job from Fiddleford’s parents and basically becoming an honorary member of the McGucket family is a really endearing premise. And when certain characters reunite or put the pieces together about who they are to each other, it really gets the ball rolling. You’re just waiting to see how everything will turn out, and it’s a pretty great ride. I followed this story and it’s expansions for a while. Then it branched into multiple AUs on it’s own and it just got way too confusing to keep up with the tag. But the main story is still a enjoyable ride from a type of fic that usually doesn’t grab me. But it had an interesting idea that pulled me in, and followed through on it. Welcome to the McGucket Family Tree Stanley

Amnesia by @ducksalive

Okay, yeah. This one isn’t technically a Gravity Falls fic. But I’m really into Ducktales right now and i was running out of Gravity Falls stories. So yeah, I’ve started diving into Ducktales fan fiction. Even wrote one of my own which you should definitely check out. Please? There’s not much out there that’s grabbed me as much as these other stories yet (if anybody knows any good Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera/Gizmoduck stuff out there, let me know), but something about this one had my attention.

I’m one of those people who is immediately intrigued by amnesia stories but the reason most people aren’t is because of how often they can go wrong. So far, that’s not the case here. In this story, Donald is the one with amnesia, and Glomgold finds him and convinces him that he’s his uncle, and that Scrooge is the enemy. From there it’s a race to try and help rescue Donald from a trap he doesn’t even know he’s in. While Donald constantly suffers for it. If you’re the type of person who likes family angst (which chances are you do if you’re a fan of any of the above fics) then you’ll get a kick out of this. Every time you think the family is going to get Donald back, Glomgold manages to snatch him away. And realizing just how far he’s willing to go to keep Scrooge’s nephew on his side is just shocking. This is another story that’s still ongoing, so there’s no telling how this will conclude yet, but at the moment, I am very emotionally invested in this one.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten way more into fanfiction then I ever would have imagined. I never looked twice at it before, but now I’ve been a spectator to many creative stories, the authors of some of my favorites have become some of my closest friends, and I’ve even written a couple myself. I may be late to the actual day, but I hope this shows my appreciation for all the fanfic writers above and a few dozen I’m probably forgetting at the moment.

Meta Monday

A hiatus seemed inevitable; there was so much work due in the next two weeks that I was starting to panic, and it takes a surprising amount of time to put out weekly Fic Rec Friday and Meta Monday posts. I was sure I'd written myself into a corner until, in true deus ex machina fashion, my friend @trashfanda offered to fill in for the next two posts.

It may not be good storytelling -- I sidestepped conflict and learned nothing --but I’m no writer. If you are, though, this clunky intro is about to pay off, because today’s theme is a return to writing resources! Far too often, I find myself completely indifferent to a character’s romantic life. A good romance in a story will give the reader a bit of second-hand infatuation. They’ll root for the relationship, beg for it. If the romance is well written, you can make a reader smile and blush just by reading a few sentences. Writing Emotional Scenes & Showing Emotion by @justawritingaid, This old ask covered the basics of writing emotional scenes – and I’d like to emphasize the point of “setup”. Without proper setup, almost everything falls flat, so you may have a problem where you’re focusing too hard on making that particular scene show all the drama. Yes, any “breaking point” will be a focal scene for the issue, but it needs proper layout before it can have any impact. FAQ

What is the ABO exchange?

ABO exchange is a fan creation exchange based around the Alpha/Beta/Omega trope. Participants sign up to create a fic or art based along a request made by another particpant. In return they will recieve a work based around their own request.

What is ABO?According to Fanlore:"Alpha/Beta/Omega or Alpha/Omega (occasionally Alpha/Beta) is a kink trope wherein some or all people have defined biological roles based on a hierarchical system, with the terms originating from animal behaviour research. There may be werewolf, knotting, or other animalistic elements involved, or the characters may be otherwise purely human."

What are the fic and art minimums?For fic, the minimum is 1,000 words. For art, the minimum is one 500x500 piece, or multiple pieces that add up to that. Works must include at least one of the ships the recipient requested, and follow the guidelines for the ABO trope. You are not required to follow anything else from their request or letter, but please respect their do not wants as much as possible.

Why are there gaps in the schedule, like between nominations and sign ups?The gaps in the schedule are to allow enough time for the mods to make sure everything is correct at every step. After nominations close, the mods will accept and reject any remaining nominations, as well as merging any that need it. Other gaps are to give enough time for AO3 to run sign up matching after sign ups close and for participants to edit their works after they’re due or for pinch hitters to submit works.

Do I need an AO3 account to participate?Yes, you will need an AO3 account to participate as everything will be run through the ABOex AO3 collection. If you do no thave an account, you can request an invite from AO3 before sign ups by going to the Invite Request page and adding your name to the queue. The page will show you how long you'll have to wait for an invite, generally a few days.

How can I keep up with announcements?All announcements and reminders will be crossposted on the ABO Exchange livejournal and tumblr.

What are nominations?During nominations, people use an AO3 form to submit ships that they would like to see included in the fest. This will create a tag set which is used for making requests and offers during sign ups. Each person is allowed to nominate up to 6 fandoms and 10 ships. Mods will accept and reject nominations as they come in. You can only edit your nominations until they have been accepted or rejected.You do not have to nominate in order to participate or participate in order to nominate.

What ships are eligible?All fandoms are welcome in this exchange, including original work. For all RPF fics the following rules apply:RPF characters must be 18+ at the time of work reveals.Do not include non-famous RPF characters family or friends in your work.RPF nominations may be removed at the request of the of the person in question.

How does sign ups work?During sign ups, people use an AO3 form to request and offer the characters and/or ships from the nominated tag set. Each participant must sign up for 4 unique fandoms with at least 1 pairing for each fandom. You may sign up for up to 10 fandoms, and up to 10 ships per fandom. Each person must offer at least 4 fandoms with at least 2 ships per fandom. You may offer up to 10 fandoms and 10 ships per fandom. You can edit your sign up at any time until sign ups end. What are “optional details”?“Optional details” is a space on the sign up where you can add extra information about your request. This can be a good chance to let the person creating for you know about the kind of work you would like to receive, or not like to receive. Good things to include might be AUs you like, do not wants, favorite tropes or genres, prompts, etc. You do not have to include any information here unless you would like to and the person creating for you has no obligation to include any of the “optional details” in the work they create. We do ask creators to honor any squicks, do not wants, or triggers.

What are Dear Creator letters?These are letters posted to personal journals, blogs, etc. that give creators more information about the kind of work you would like to receive. Like the “optional details” on the sign up, letters are entirely optional. We suggest that you put anything important in the optional details as there is no guarantee your creator will look at your letter.There will be a space on the sign ups where you can link your letter so your creator can find it easily. There will also be a post on the ABO Exchange livejournal where you can link your letter. This will allow other participants to see your requests in case they would like to create treats.

What are treats?Treats are unassigned works created just for fun. Treats do not have to meet the minimum requirements for the fest, though we do ask that you still honor squicks, do not wants, and triggers. There is no way to differentiate between assignments and treats, so you may want to mention in your author’s note that the work is a treat. There is no guarantee that you will get a treat, though having a letter linked in the letters post will increase your chances.

Can I contact my recipient? Can I talk about my assignment on my blog?We ask that if you really feel you need to contact your recipient for information, you do it anonymously. A better option is to contact a mod and have them work as an intermediary.

Please also do not publicly discuss the details of your work, including who it is for, or upload your work publicly anywhere else before author reveals.

How do I post my work?You can post your work in two ways. You can go to your “Assignments” page on AO3 and click on the assignment for this fest or go to the ABO Exchange collection and click Your Assignment. You can click either “Post to Fulfill” or “Default”. Clicking “Post to Fulfill” will take you to the posting form. This will automatically post your work to this year’s ABO exchange collection with your recipient’s name already filled in. Just fill out the rest of the form, preview, and post.

If you’re posting a treat, you won’t have a “Post to Fulfill” button, so you will need to go to the ABO Exchange collection and click “Post to Collection” and fill in your recipient’s name by hand. Then fill out the rest of the form, preview, and post.

You can post your work any time before the assignment due date. You may make edits and minor reveals before reveals, but please do not post an incomplete work. All works will show as “Mystery Work” by anonymous until reveals.

What is, and do I need, a beta reader?A beta reader is basically a person who goes over your work to make sure that there are no spelling/grammatical errors and they can even be of assistance in helping you with story lines, etc. It is highly recommended that a beta looks over your work before posting, whether you are doing fic, or art.

What are reveals?Story reveals are when posted works are switched from hidden to visible. Participants are notified by AO3 by email that they have a gift waiting for them, with a link to the work. You can also look under “Gifts” on your profile to find a gift work. Author names will still be hidden at this point. Logged in authors can reply to comments on AO3, which will under the name “Anonymous Creator” until author reveals.

Author reveals are when when author names switch from anonymous to showing the author name. At this point, authors may crosspost their works wherever they’d like.

Can I drop out?We have high hopes that everybody who signs up can actually finish their assignment, but real life can unfortunately get in the way and we completely understand! If you feel like you just cannot finish in time and no amount of assistance from us can help you, just let us know as soon as possible so we can find a pinch hitter. Participants who do not post a work, contact a mod for an extention, or default by January 7th risk being banned from the next round of the ABO exchange.

What is a pinch hitter?A pinch hitter is someone who comes in to create a work for someone whose original creator has defaulted. This makes sure as much as we can that everyone who signs ups receives a gift. Pinch hitters will generally have a much shorter timeline to create their work. What is the Young Justice Fest?

Young Justice Fest is a fic exchange for the Young Justice animated cartoon. Participants sign up to write fic, make art, or create a vid for a character or ship someone else has requested. In return, they will receive fic, art, or a vid for a character or ship they have requested.

What are the fic, art, and vid minimums?

Any ships between two or more characters on the show are eligible. Romantic ships are marked with a / between characters and platonic ships are marked with a & between characters. Characters can be nominated using the form "Character & None". No crossover ships will are eligible for this round.

No-show defaulters, i.e. those who default by failing to post without clicking the Default button or contacting a mod, will be banned for the next round. What is the DCU Bang? A Big Bang/Mini-Bang is a writing challenge that prompts authors and artists to work together to create a story and work of art that go together. In this case, our fandom is the DC Universe, and our goal is 10,000/5,000 words!

Do I need a DreamWidth/LiveJournal/Tumblr/Twitter/Ao3 account? The only account that is required at this point is Archive of Our Own. The reason for this is that all stories will be posted to the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection, rather than being posted to the DreamWidth/LiveJournal communities, as in years past. After being posted to Ao3 and being approved for the collection, you’re free to post your story/art anywhere you wish!

What are check-ins? Check-ins are a way to see how you’re doing on your work! Some of them are mandatory and some of them are not, so it’s important to keep track of which ones are mandatory! They’re also a great way to keep yourself on track and a time to talk about your work and let others know how you’re doing. If an author does not respond to 2 mandatory check-ins, they will be considered dropped from the current Bang!

Do I need a beta reader? Starting for 2019, beta readers are no longer mandatory! However, you must edit your work for at least spelling and grammar and submitted stories found to have excessive spelling and grammar issues will be asked to edit, or be removed from the collection. Consequences for this will be handled on a case-by-case basis and can include being banned from participation in the next round. Beta readers are still strongly recommended to use. We suggest finding a beta sooner rather than later, and here is the 2018's DCU Bang Beta Reader Resources Post. If you want to have more than one person beta read your story, that's fine, too!

Can I drop out? Yes! Sometimes life gets in the way or a story just doesn’t happen, and we understand that! However, there is a cutoff point, and if you do not let the mods know before this date, you can be banned from the next round. Even if it is after this cutoff date that you need to drop out please let us know so that we can discuss options. We can’t help if we don’t know there is a problem! Dropping all contact with mods after the cutoff date is grounds for an automatic ban, as we can’t help at that point. Please get in contact with us, so that we can arrange for art if needed! Solo participants are free to drop out at any point, without consequence. Tandem artist/author groups can also drop out at any point together without consequences.

What can I do if I have problems with my author/artist? Contact the mods! Let us handle things as we understand that sometimes people just don’t get along. Abuse or rude behaviour toward any participant in the Bang will not be tolerated, especially for story/art content. (It’s important for artists to read all the warnings in a story summary, and for authors to list all warnings in their story summary!) Please just get in contact with us mods to resolve issues between participants, rather than disappearing. If an author or artist needs to drop out from the Bang, after artist claims have happened, there is a limited grace period to do so, please keep track of the schedule. If an artist needs to drop out, the author’s story(s) will go out for pinch hits, so that they still receive art.

What is the grace period? The grace period is one last chance to allow authors or artists to drop out of the Bang without consequences, after claims have been made. It is a very short period, from July 5th to July 20th so it is very important to communicate to the mods if you are needing to drop out during this time, for any reason! It is also possible to drop down to the solo track during the grace period as well, but this must be discussed with the mods as well.

When do I post my story? For 2019, October 1st-5th is the “due date”***. Rather than choosing a single day that all works are due, we will be giving everyone 5 days to get their works into the Ao3 collection before reveals happen. This allows more flexibility for authors and artists to check over their works on Ao3 before going live and being revealed. This also allows the mods to check over works to make sure they are complete. Do not submit works that are incomplete. If your work is not complete, it could be revealed before you are ready for it to be revealed and no one wants that! Authors are welcome to submit their works and do minor editing and polishing while they wait for their reveal date to come. Please contact the mods if you will not be able to post your story between October 1st-5th, so that we can help you decide if you can post during the amnesty period or not! ***Why the change from a long posting period? Frankly, it got to be a lot to handle and keep track of and after doing research and looking at many other Bang setups, this is fairly close to how they are run as well. It’s also more fair to participants to have a solid due date, rather than some participants getting nearly 2 extra months to work on their projects.

What is the reveal date? The reveal date will be whatever you choose on September 14th, this is not to be confused with the due date, which is October 1st-5th. The official reveal period will run between October 5th and October 20th. If you will not have your work completed and polished in this time, please do not post to the Ao3 collection, contact the mods instead to discuss things and set up for amnesty posting instead! We’re here to help and work with you, but we cannot help if you do not contact us!

What is the amnesty period? The amnesty period is a chance for participants that couldn't quite finish on time to have one last chance to post for the current Bang! If for any reason you cannot post on your chosen reveal date, please get in contact with the mods ASAP!

Where can I post my story? Anywhere you wish, so long as it is also in the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection. Posting it there is how we will count your work as completed***. ***Artists will not be required to post to Ao3, though it is highly encouraged. (Ao3 isn’t great for hosting some types of art, like picspam or gif sets, we understand that!) If you are not posting your art to Ao3, you must make sure the link to where you art is posted is provided to the author and linked within the author notes or story.

So, what's allowed here? The easy answer to that is: pretty much anything DC Comics! We're open to slash, het, and gen, no matter your pairing preference. If you want to write Clark/Lex or Jason/Tim, that's awesome, and if you've got a great idea for an epic Batman/Catwoman or M'gann/Conner, that's perfectly acceptable as well. You can base your story off of any medium or canon - so whether you’re a diehard Young Justice cartoon fan, into Smallville, or someone who loves the comics, you can participate! The only thing explicitly not allowed is pedophilia for the sake of pedophilia - if it's a plot point, it's okay, but we're not going to post stories that have sexual situations involving children (for our purposes, anyone under the age of 15). If you have a question about your pairing or specific idea, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post, send an email to [email protected], or send a PM, and I'll discuss it with you on a case-by-case basis.

What about crossovers, fusions, and AUs? The only requirement for this Bang is that the primary focus of your story be on at least one character from the DC Universe. If you want to write Batman in Ancient Rome or Superman as a new member of the Hawaii Five-0 task force, you are more than welcome to. However, if you want to write a crossover that focuses on Harry Potter being a new member of the Justice League, this is not the place for it. The focus must be on a DC character. Crossovers with other comics fandoms are allowed, but the focus has to be on the DC character.

Can I write original characters? If they are a minor character, yes! Even more important characters, such as Batman protecting an original female character, are acceptable, so long as it is from Batman’s POV and the story isn’t explicitly about this original female character. A work that features, for example, an original character journalist doing an in-depth piece on Superman is also allowed, as the work would focus on Superman, not the journalist. A work wherein your original character joins the Justice League, or exists within Gotham, or is the child of a DCU character would not be acceptable for this Bang. We want to keep the focus on DCU characters as much as possible! If you’re not sure if your idea for including original characters is within these rules, please contact us at [email protected], so we can discuss it on a case-by-case basis!

Can I submit a story I have already started? That depends! Stories and art have to be new for the DCU Bang. If you've written something that's 10k/5k already and posted it, awesome! However, this is a chance to create something new (or finish an unposted WIP), so if your story has been posted elsewhere in its entirety, it doesn't qualify for this challenge. If you have never posted the story anywhere, it qualifies for this Bang, even if you started writing it 10 years ago!

What if I've already posted part of a fic? Can I finish it for this challenge? The purpose of this Bang is to unveil a brand-new, completed piece on your posting date, however we are okay with you finishing your piece as long as you have not posted more than 2,000 words for the 10k Traditional Big Bang or 1,000 words for the 5k Mini-Bang and do not post any more until your posting date. Since this Bang has a minimum word count of 10,000/5,000 words we are asking that no more than 2,000/1,000 words be posted prior to signing up, so that at least 80% of the fic is new. Please note that the 2,000/1,000 word limit still holds no matter how long your finished fic is - even if you complete a 100k epic, you can only submit it for this Bang if you've published less than 2,000/1,000 words of it before signing up for this challenge!

What about a sequel or a prequel to an already posted fic? Prequels/sequels to stories you've written and posted are acceptable! If you write a prequel/sequel, be sure to link back to the original story, so people can read that as well. =D

Can I sign up with a co-author? You can work with a co-author or a group, if you're more comfortable. But remember, the word count will still be 10k no matter how many authors work on it. Just make sure to sign-up all authors on the sign-up sheet and have everyone join the comm. The limit of two stories per author still stands even if all the stories are co-written.

Can I sign up to write more than one story? Sure! You can sign-up to write up to two different stories for this challenge. If you do want to write two stories make sure to sign-up separately for both. If you have to drop one or both make sure to contact the mods before rough drafts are due so that you don't leave an artist hanging!!! If you have to drop either story after the final dropping date, you could be banned for the next round!

Can I sign up as an author AND an artist? If you want to, more power to you! That's awesome! If you wish to create art for your story only, you can sign up as a solo-author, and it will be entirely up to you to create art for your story! By signing up as an artist, you are offering to create art for someone else’s story during the claiming period, so if your intent is to create for your own story only, sign up as a solo-author! And again! Please do not take on more than you can handle!!! If, for at any reason, you do not believe you can continue, as an artist or an author, contact me ASAP!

What is the Traditional Author/Artist track? The traditional sign-up is the one that most Bang-type challenges follow. You sign up as an author, write your story and submit your rough draft/summary according the schedule. Your story will go up for blind artist claims. After that, the mods will match up the authors and artists via email. (It’s very important to sign up with an email that you check frequently!!!) Authors will send their story to their artist(s) and discuss and collaborate on what they would like to do!

What is the Solo Author/Artist Track? A solo author/artist is someone who wants the structure of a fanwork challenge without having to work with someone else to create an accompanying fanwork. By working alone, you don't have to worry about whether you complete your project or not because you won't have a partner depending on you. You can also decide to do your own art or find your own partner to work with. Basically, I won't be matching you with an artist or an author, but you can still have a fic with art if you arrange it yourself. You can also work on other kinds of projects like podfic if you desire. It will also be possible for solo-author/solo-artists to change their mind, should they feel capable of completing their works in time for posting! Please do not choose to switch from solo if you are not confident you can complete your story/art. If, after switching from solo and you are not able to complete your story/art and you have been paired with an artist/author, you will be banned from participating next year. We don’t want to leave anyone hanging!

What is the Tandem Author/Artist track? A tandem sign-up is when an author and artist choose to sign-up together. This way, the artist will be able to work with the author throughout the entire process and have more time to complete their art. If an author or artist want to work with each other, after one or both have already signed up, no problem! Just send me a message and I will get that updated! This is a great option for artists, and authors that want to have more time working together. The Discord server will have channels set up so that artists and authors wanting to work longer together can find a partner!

What counts as art? Lots of things! Traditional art, digital art, manips, banners, icons, wallpaper, gifs sets, picspam, vids, and fanmixes (with cover art) are all fine. If you want to check that what you have in mind is appropriate, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post. We'll discuss it on a case-by-case basis.

What are the minimum requirements for art? Each story an artist claims is required to have at least one art of quality for each story they claim. If an artist decides to claim 3 stories, they will be required to create one piece of art for each story, so at minimum, 3 pieces of art. You’re creating something for a work that is at least 5k/10k in length, so we want the art to match that effort! Here are the suggested guidelines:

Traditional/Digital art: Cleaned lineart, on unlined paper, that is at least 500x500 pixels is the minimum. Additional sketchier/rougher pieces are welcomed so long as one piece of art is at the cleaned lineart stage! Manips: Clean renders and non-blurry images that do not contain watermarks should be used for photo manipulation. Examples of the quality expected for this Bang can be found right here on Fanlore. Banners or Icons or Wallpaper: 5 icons, of at least 100x100 pixels. 3 banners. 1 wallpaper. More is of course always welcomed! Picspam or Gifsets: At least 6 images, but more images, or multiple sets are welcome! Vids: At least two minutes long, or a full song! Fanmixes: At least 10 songs and include cover art (this can be a manip!).

I'm interested, but I'm not sure what to write. There is a channel in the DCU Bang Discord server, just for prompts! Anyone can leave a prompt, and anyone can take a prompt. If six authors choose to write from the same prompt, that's totally fine. If someone wants to mash three prompts together, that's also fine. If someone wants to use half of a prompt, that's fine. Sensing a trend yet? =D This also means, should you choose to leave a prompt, it is for anyone to use, in whichever way they want. If there is an idea that you want done in a very specific manner, it may not be the best for you to leave it for this Bang, as all authors are free to use prompts however they see fit.

I’ve been banned or think I have been banned, what can I do? Contact the mods! The quickest way is via email, [email protected], or by messaging LuciferxDamien on the DCU Bang Discord server. If you have been banned for not completing your story/art, we might be able to work something out, but be prepared to have something completed in return! To unban yourself, complete the story/art you had promised in the previous round and let the mod know via email or Discord. If you were banned for a reason other than not completing your story/art, please still contact us and we can discuss things further. We’re very willing to work with people!
