Jordan Burtchett’s acting career started in musical theater

First things first, were you aware of how Jordan Burtchett’s career in the performing arts started off? It started in musical theater! His family moved to Canada, where he grew up, when he was just a toddler. As a child, he would make his own movies with his brother– showing that his interest in film and tv was fostered from a young age. 

Once he entered high school, Jordan’s priorities shifted to other things, like sports and church, but he did not lose that interest in the performing arts completely. That spark within him was ignited again when he got a role in a school musical in grade 11. This can be attributed to jump-starting his acting career, as he also got an agent not long afterwards! 

He still went on to go to college and study Environmental Science to give himself a bit of a backup plan and safety net from acting. Once he graduated from the University of Columbia with a degree, in 2017, he began to work in a restaurant. As he worked at the restaurant, he was also seriously pursuing acting by going on auditions on the side, for various roles in films and television. 

His role on 2 Hearts was Jordan Burtchett’s big break

While the school musical was his first role ever, he was not getting paid for this and it is not exactly the same as his big break. Instead, Jordan Burtchett got a role in 2 Hearts, which is largely considered to be his big break into the industry! Before this role, he had already begun to accumulate an impressive resume of acting credits. 

Some of these included his first paid acting gig in Cult, as a young Stuart. He also worked on the Netflix original show The Killing. These days, Jordan Burtchett is kept plenty busy by his recurring role as Quinn McGregor on Heartland! However, like many actors, he is still pursuing other roles and projects that he can work on in conjunction with his role on Heartland. Most recently, he can be found in the comedy movie Drinkwater, which came out in 2021. It was also previously named Change of Pace.

The movie is set in and centers on a small town in British Columbia, Canada– the town is called Penticton. The movie follows the life of a character called Mike Freshwater. He is a high school student who is shy and keeps to himself. He is also a target of bullies– his main bully is a character named Luke Ryan. Unfortunately for Mike, his life at home is not much better. This is because his father is too focused on the government and handling his own personal rival to pay attention to what Mike is currently going through. It isn’t until a new girl arrives on the scene that Mike’s life begins to look up.

Jordan Burtchett is actually playing the role of the bully, Luke Ryan, in this movie! It is a great example of his range as an actor and is worth a watch.

What episode does Quinn come to Heartland?

As we mentioned above, Quinn McGregor is the character that Jordan Burtchett plays on Heartland. He is a fan favorite, but did not get his start on the show until much later seasons. His relationship with Georgie is one of his main storylines, but he did not come onto the scene until several seasons after she and Phoenix arrived at the ranch. Quinn is introduced in Season 13, Episode 6, “A Time to Remember”. This is much later than Georgie and Phoenix, who was introduced back in Season 6!

When Quinn is introduced on the show, he is introduced as one of Georgie’s old friends from her Europe trip. His character first appears at her high school graduation. Quinn comes from a family that owns a major show jumping operation in Florida– he is originally only on a short visit to Hudson. However, things don’t turn out this way for him– instead, at the end of Season 13, he is offered a great opportunity. Quinn is offered a position as a coach at Hillhurst Stables, where Prince Ahmed and Olivia kept their horses, so he decides to stay.

Do Quinn and Georgie get together?

Many fans follow the storyline of Quinn and Georgie’s friendship with bated breath, hoping for the sparks to fly and for it to grow into something more. Part of this can be attributed to Jordan Burtchett’s looks and charm, as well as how he plays the role convincingly and puts on a heartwarming show. Plus, Quinn and Georgie have chemistry!

Luckily for fans, the two characters do get together and are still going strong in recent seasons and episodes. The episode where the two lovebirds do finally get together is Season 13, Episode 10, “The Passing of the Torch”. They are together and watching and waiting for Lou’s election results at Maggie’s. Quinn tells Georgie about his job offer to coach at Hillhurst Stables and asks her for a reason to stay. In response, Georgie finally kisses him!

Earlier in that same episode, Georgie also confesses her feelings and pours her heart out to Quinn while at the Kelowna show jumping competition. She even confesses her love, and yet, Quinn walks off to collect his ribbon without a response! How crushing. Of course, that worried Georgie, and she assumed that he did not feel the same way about her. 

Does Quinn propose to Georgie in Heartland?

Later on in the series, as Quinn and Georgie grow and learn together, it makes sense that they would want to take the next step in their relationship and get married. Many fans are at the edge of their seats, wondering how and when Quinn will propose to Georgie. While it has not happened yet, Heartland teased us with this possibility in a recent episode of the show. 

In Season 14, Episode 7, “Courage”, many viewers thought that this was when Quinn would finally pop the question! Even the title of the episode seemed to be a clue. Many of the clues dropped in the episode seem to be leading up to a big reveal or a dramatic moment. First, Lou notices a jewelry box in Quinn’s luggage, and then at breakfast, Quinn says that he has an exciting announcement to make. 

Instead of a proposal, though, Quinn wanted to tell everyone at breakfast about how close Georgie is to securing a spot in the North American Youth Championships. There, she would be able to compete against future Olympic athletes! However, the existence of the jewelry box may be a clue that a proposal isn’t too far in the future.

So I've gone and seen Shang Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings. Here are some random thoughts I had about the film.

(Spoilers below)

1) They had to have done the opening arrow scene on purpose and I actually busted out in a laugh. So lemme explain, like about circa 15 years ago, the "great" director Zhang Yimou had his foray into the martial arts genre with a little film called "Hero", starring your Mr. Wen Wu, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (I always say his Chinese name because a) like Wen Wu said your name is sacred, b) there are two great Tony Leungs in HK Entertainment). So anyhoo, in that film there was an incredibly ridiculous scene where an entire army shoots like thousands of arrows at Jet Li's character to execute him. I remember one of the student groups back in college had held a screening of it (which basically is a bunch of us cramped inside a classroom showing a bootleg copy on the projector) and the entire lot of us busted out laughing.

Tony wasn't gonna die from arrows like Jet, he yeeted them away.

2) I think in a circle of Asian American friends, we knew a Shaun-like character, we all knew a Katy, we all have one of THOSE lawyer friends.

3) I actually loved the bus fight scene....and yeah that sounds about right in regards to San Fran public transport lol.

4) Why was Wong hustling for money? He clearly had a hand in fixing matches with Abomination. Was he investigating the Xu siblings and was undercover? Or they really needed money to fix the roof. Actually the Wong scene was rather...unnecessary somehow.

5) I love that this film's main character doesn't fall in to the trap of Asian film main leads...typical good at everything, classically good looking (i.e pasty a la kdrama/c-dramas), RICH by legacy. Shaun running from legacy actually makes him rather relatable in a way. He found his own path eventually to take up his mantle.

6) When I saw the trailer, I had mistook Xialing for the actress who played her mom. The actress, Fala Chen, had an extremely similar bob in one of my favorite TV series from HK. You could see similarities between Meng'er and Fala, so kudos to casting for that.

7) Speaking of Fala, I've always thought that she was infinitely wasted in the later years at her job in the TV station in HK. It was crap scripts one after the other. She was by far the most natural of the actresses that started around the same time, yet she was probably the most criticized. When I saw that she quit her job and further her career by going to Julliard, I thought good for her and what a badass.

8) God, why Ronny Chieng? Just effing why him?!

9) Katy is the best friend you wish you had. Literally.

10) So speaking as a trilingual (native Cantonese speaker, English and fluent in Mandarin), I think the part that really threw off a bit was the Chinese. I've always found Chinese dialogue that pops up in Hollywood productions a bit awkward and clunky. The interchange between English and Mandarin Chinese in this definitely was not awkward. It actually does sound like how my family would communicate at times. While I don't find the dialogue an issue, I did find Tony's Mandarin throws me off while we have other characters speak perfect Mandarin. Just let the man speak Cantonese lol. (Simu's was very typical ABC/CBC to be fair and come to think of it, this is the first time I've heard Fala act in Mandarin Chinese, her self-taught Canto is extremely good btw).

11) The action scenes were awesome, although the dragon fight was a bit dizzying.

12) So basically the final battle is like Mortal Kombat, The Hobbit movie, and Raya all rolled into one.

13) I am glad they don't overuse "honor" in this. There is no honor to defend in this entire family. In fact, speaking as a Chinese person, we don't "defend honor" like we eat rice. We either choose to live honorably like any other folks or just do our own thing.

14) Speaking of eating rice, I completely lost my shit when Wen Wu went to Guang Bo (Mr. Landlord Yuen Wah!) and said a common telling off in Chinese "I've eaten more salt than you've ate rice young man, so you better speak to me with more respect." He's seen more shit than you. I keep on forgetting Wen Wu is like thousands of years old.

15) Tony is very good looking for a thousand years old.

16) During the battle between father and son, I kept on thinking....are those rings from a similar meteor like in Wakanda? Meaning they are Vibranium?

17) So definitely love and grief are the main themes of this new era in the MCU. Wenwu's motivations definitely is like the Strange episode of "What If..." His family was his everything and his weakness.

18) When Shang Chi looked at Katy like THAT, I very audibly said "No!" in the theater. Why can't they just be besties for life? I'm telling you, BroTP for life. It's not even about making the Asian male lead asexual. Why can't a guy and a girl can be ride and die like that.

19) Ok...thank you Bruce for the answer to my questions about the rings.

20) God I wanna hang out with Wong.

21) Is Xialing rebuilding the Ten Rings and why do I have a feeling she is going to have ties to Sharon's Power Broker?

Final thought: A very fun, very solid entry into MCU. I went in with very low expectations and definitely found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would. I definitely will rewatch this film when it comes out on streaming. I actually wouldn't mind seeing more of Shaun and Katy.

Entertainment Spotlight: Cree Cicchino

This summer, actress Cree Cicchino will star in Netflix feature The Sleepover, which follows two siblings who discover the secret past life of their seemingly normal mom. She also returns to her role in Netflix’s Mr. Iglesias, namely that of the smart student Marisol Fuentes who works three jobs alongside her school work. Born in New York and raised in Queens, Cree landed her first role at just 13 with Babe Carano in Nickelodeon’s hit live-action gaming sitcom Game Shakers. Cree took the time to chat with us about acting, activism, and more. Check it out:

In Mr. Iglesias, you returned to the role of Marisol Fuentes. What do you enjoy about returning to a role you’ve played before?

Doing series work is always comforting for that reason exactly; getting to return to a character you’ve played before. Being a bit more comfortable and confident in your character and the project and how the two mesh together, there’s more freedom I think to play and try different things.

Similar to Marisol, you have also juggled work with school, having landed your first role at 13—what advice would you give to Marisol, or indeed kids who want to start out?

I have no place giving any advice to Marisol (that girl is a superhero!) But for kids who want to start out in the industry, and will have to balance work and school, I’d say appreciate getting to be a student. The industry can exciting and hectic, and sometimes unkind. Funnily enough, your time doing schoolwork can be the most peaceful bit of normality. It might seem like an extra workload now, (and it is) but I promise you’ll be sad when it’s ending. I just graduated high school and I’m very mushy about the whole thing. Try to appreciate it while you’ve got it!  

You're involved with the Black Lives Matter movement. What advice would you give to someone who wants to get involved with advocacy but doesn't know where to start?

If you want to get involved with advocacy and the Black Lives Matter/Anti-Racism movement, all I can really suggest is to seek out and listen to Black advocates, activists, and educators. As white and non-Black people who want to get involved, we must follow the guidance of the Black leaders of this movement.

Can you tell us about a time when you changed your opinion about something when you learned new information?

I think there are too many to count. I’m grateful to be in a generation built on growth, learning and an explosion of conversation and education. My ideas and opinions, whether political, social, or economic, are always growing as I learn. And they should be! It’s a gift to be corrected. It’s a gift to find you’re wrong. Changed opinions and new ideas mean we’re moving forward; that’s the only way to go.

The Sleepover is about a parent who has had a previous life as a thief and is now living in witness protection. What would you do if you found out your parents had been keeping a similar secret from you?

It would take a ridiculous amount of time and proof to convince me that my mom had a secret past life as a professional thief. I wouldn’t be mad or confused; I would just literally never believe her. That movie would be far less interesting than this one.

Can you tell us a bit about your character Mim in The Sleepover? 

Mim is one of the four kids trying to solve the mystery of Clancy’s mom and her secret past. On this adventure, she is one of the only people appropriately terrified of everything going on.

Malin Akerman and Ken Marino  also star in The Sleepover, what was it like to work with them? Are there any fun anecdotes or things you learned from them? 

Working with Ken and Malin was a dream. I was a huge fan of the both of them before shooting began, so it was a crazy surprise to see they had been cast. They are two of the sweetest and funniest people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Watching them every day was just soaking in so much talent. The entire cast spent like two days, towards the beginning of the shoot, in front of a green screen doing the wildest stuff. It was quite the bonding experience; definitely a memorable anecdote from taping. 

How do you practice being an ally, and how do you take action?

I’ve learned recently that “ally” can be a harmful word, as it implies ally-ship is a noun; a title that’s earnable and reachable. When really, practicing anti-racism should be (and is) a life-long, ever-evolving practice. I’ve really just started learning about the work, and aside from educating myself and taking personal action steps (petition signing, emailing, making calls etc.…) I’m trying to use my online platform to spread awareness and amplify the voices of black speakers and educators who must be heard right now.

What are you currently playing on repeat?

Lizzo. Morning, noon, and night.

Mr. Iglesias is a fun teacher with a lot of humor. Did you have a favorite teacher in school?

Yes! Ms. Salamone in Queens, NY. I’ll never forget. She taught me how to love learning. She was the first teacher to make me feel smart and capable. I’ve got a lot of love for her.

How do you approach tough conversations with friends and family, and why is it important to have conversations that make us uncomfortable?

Of course, I can only speak to non-Black and white people wanting to do the work. So in that regard, it is our responsibility to be a part of this fight. This is truly our mess to clean, and a big part of this work is having tough conversations with people in our own circles. That can seem scary, and it’s incredibly uncomfortable, but when you really let the truth of our responsibility in this movement sink in, conversations of this sort become less daunting, and their necessity is clear.

Staying as calm as possible and being firm is the most efficient approach, I think. And when we have these conversations (and this is something I recently learned and must apply going forward), we need to try and point out the toxicity of our privilege, and the racism we’ve internalized that’s allowed us to sit and debate something that should never be debatable.

If you went back to school as a teacher, what kind of teacher would you want to be ?

Definitely some kind of English or Lit teacher. It was always my favorite class as a student.

What have your singing and dancing experiences taught you that it has come in useful for your work as an actor?

Having dance in my back pocket has been incredibly useful in my acting work thus far. Almost every project I’ve done has had me dance in one way or another. It’s really fun to be able to apply it when asked to.

If you could have any other job, what would it be and why?

I’ve always loved writing! If I had never begun acting, I definitely would have been trying to write professionally by now in some way.

What gives you hope?

To hype up my generation one more time, I think we’re a really energized and educated bunch. We’re having necessary conversations; we’re politically involved and socially aware. We’ve such a long way to go. But I don’t think my generation is one to shy away from the work. There are so many incredible leaders my age; all of whom I look up to immensely. I have real faith in us young people. That gives me hope.

“Oh, stop it” she said and waved them away, earning a laugh and even more cheering from the theatre. “If I’m honest, I really considered not presenting this award because it breaks me inside to give the Oscar to someone else when it’s rightfully mine” she said in a funny, raspy evil voice, resembling a witch, “But you know, sharing is caring or whatever. Viola Davis, your abilities to embody different characters and raise awareness to ongoing issues in society has always amazed us, and it does once again in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, Meryl announced, the camera going to Viola who was sitting about 10 seats to my left, the audience (including me) applauding and praising her. Literally all of her performances are incredible.

Could I still believe I was here? Definitely not, and not any time soon. From small skits to my big break with Tom Holland in a stupid rom-com that I didn’t even want to make, to now. Tom knows it’s nothing against him, it’s just that I haven’t learned to appreciate romantic comedies the way he has, but the thing I loved most from doing it was finishing it with Tom. He had become such an important person in my life since that moment, what with guiding me through the newfound world of fame and being there for me when I joined the Marvel franchise, it was just more than I could ever dream of. Now I sit here at the freaking Oscars, with Tom Holland as my date, and having done one of the greatest films ever, nothing could keep the smile off my face. Or the nerves.

 My leg kept bouncing up and down, a nervous action I often did and one that the guy beside me had caught on to real quick when we first met. His warm hand gently squeezed my thigh, and I turned to look at him a little surprised.

“Hey, it’s okay” he softly said, his gaze soft and comforting.

“I didn’t even realize I was doing it” I answered in the same tone, whispering a thank you and letting my hand rest on top of his, weirdly interlocking our fingers. 

Meryl turned to where Olivia Colman was sitting, “Your Majesty,” she started, referencing her portrayals of royalty and causing her to chuckle, “your moving performances have always left us wanting more, and I’m sure that is what I and everyone felt when we saw you in The Father” a big smile broke out on her face, and cheering ensued once more for our queen, or at least one of mine.

“Aging is some we all go through...unfortunately,” Meryl uttered into the mic, touching up her almost white hair, “and you, Cynthia Erivo, made us relate to your character this way with your brilliant acting in Reaching 39″, that woman is simply amazing, I thought as I clapped and cheered with the audience.

“My dear Kate,” the camera panned to Kate Winslet, who just stared fondly at the woman on the stage, “watching you grow as an actress has been one of the pleasures of my life and you reach new heights both professionally and literally in Misdemeanors”, she is such an icon, oh my.

Finally, Meryl Streep turned to look at me in the front row with a grin on her face, and I quickly got into “camera mode”, as I like to call it. I sat up straighter, looking at her with gentle eyes and smile. 

“Señorita Y/N Y/L,” she started with the heavily accented Spanish word for Ms., “with your entrance into the world of filmmaking, you have set new expectations for all of us to reach. Even though this is your first nomination, I feel in my heart it won’t be the last, and we can’t wait to see more of you like we saw with your extraordinary performance in Paraíso” she finished, bringing a big smile to my face at her words. Turning to the camera, I became a bit shy and gave a small wave, feeling Tom squeeze my hand in comfort and another hand on my shoulder from behind. I turned to see Salma Hayek, one of my co-stars in the film, who gave me a strong nod and smile, loudly saying “Eso!” as a cheer for me.

“And the Oscar goes too...” ayyyyy no ay no que nervios que nervios que nervios me muero- all of this going through my head repeatedly but having to put on a smile and a calm façade for the camera was exhausting. Tranquila, tranquila, si no ganas está bien igual solo el hecho de estar aquí ya es lo más-

“Y/N Y/L, Paraíso!” Meryl announced, and all I heard were screams and loud clapping from around me. 

Shocked, I looked up with wide eyes and my jaw going slack a little. I felt a buzz fill my body and the idol on the stage beckoned me up, when I realized I hadn’t moved. I slowly stood up and instantly turned to Tom who quickly pulled me into his arms with a strong hug and whispering in my year, “I knew it! I knew you would do it darling. I’m so so proud of you babe, go get your award!” not giving me a chance to answer as he gave me a quick kiss and turned me around in the direction of the stage. Still in a bit of a daze, I didn’t see Salma, Eugenio (Derbez), and Benicio (del Toro) make their way to me, ambushing me in a group hug as they started jumping around and sort of with me, chanting “EH! EH! EH!” like Latinos at a party and causing me to laugh and come back to my senses. I hugged them all and continued to the stairs, stopping to hug my directors Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón. 

I lifted my dress as I ascended the steps, and in true nervous fashion, stumbled and almost face planted in front of thousands of people. 

“Uy, mierda” I chuckled to myself, and accepted the help of none other than Chris Evans who lent his arm for the remaining steps. I thanked him with a smile and after his Congrats!, I made my way to Meryl who held the famous award in her hands. She handed it to me and pulled me into her embrace, saying “Beautiful job, sweetheart, you’re amazing”, and all I could answer was “Oh my, thank you so much, you’re the amazing one”, sharing a laugh with her and standing in front of the mic.

I looked out into the audience, who were still giving me a standing ovation. Almost like a camera in my head, I tried to ingrain this moment in my mind and took a deep breath, starting my speech.

“God, I really hope I don’t forget any words in English right now” I said with a breathless laugh, inciting one from the people below me. “Thank you so much. Thank you to...um...so many people. To the Academy for this great, great honor. To my fellow nominees for inspiring me every single day. Being in the same room as you is already insane, let alone being nominated with you, it’s just- it’s truly out of this world. Viola, Olivia, Kate, Cynthia, you are my literal idols and if I could physically cut this Oscar into five pieces,” I said as I made a motion of cutting the award and humoured the audience, “I would give a piece to all of you. Um, thank you to my team, my agent, Victoria, te adoro y te agradezco for believing in me and helping me live out my dream. Sorry, I’m probably gonna switch between languages during this.” I said with a laugh. 

“Paraíso was a project that, for me, came out of nowhere. But for my extraordinary directors los señores Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, it was a life’s work so to you, gracias por darme la oportunidad de darle vida a Marielos and for giving me the experience of a lifetime. Salma, Eugenio, Benicio, Gael, and all the cast and crew, thank you for becoming my second family and supporting me every step of the way. It has been my honor to work with you” I said with a hand on my chest, showing that I was speaking from my heart and smiling at the kisses and cheers sent to me from them, hearing a crazed Te amamos! from Eugenio. It eased the tension in my body which I was incredibly thankful for. 

“I also want to thank-” I stopped, getting a little choked up, “ha, sorry, it’s my family that couldn’t be here” I said, a wave of claps and cheering in comfort came from the audience. Quickly composing myself, I continued, “Ya, okay. All the way back home, lo hice! Familia, les dije que no les iba a agradecer si me ganaba un Oscar algún día por no creer en mi y hoy es ese día, pero no me lo perdonaría si no les agradezco. Gracias por apoyarme a pesar de que yo sé que les dio un ataque que quisiera ser actriz. Gracias por siempre estar ahí para mi, por quererme incondicionalmente y por enseñarme que trabajando duro todo se puede lograr. Los amo infinitamente.” I finished, with tears threatening to roll down my eyes. I tilted my head to the sky to prevent them from falling, and with a deep breath I turned to Tom who had his hands in a prayer stance while looking intently at me, the same smile from before still gracing his face.

“Tommy...” I started, and the audience audibly awed at the nickname, “Oh, you don’t even know what I’m gonna say to him” I said with narrowed eyes, but my gaze found my love once more.

“Thank you so much for being my rock ever since we met. I’m beyond thankful for you and all you do for me, baby. You make me the happiest and thank you for pushing me to do things that scare me. For being there for me in case I fall and for being my person. Te amo, amor.” I blowed him a kiss which he caught and jokingly used to wipe his tears, making me and the other celebrities laugh.

Please wrap up, I read from the screen, and let out and “Ay, perdón! I gotta wrap up sorry sorry” hurriedly finishing up my speech. 

“Lastly, this award goes out to all the Latina girls out there with big dreams. Nunca se den por vencidas. No dejen que nadie les diga que no porque de que se puede, se puede. Querer es poder! I love you guys, my fans oh my gosh, thank you thank you, gracias!” I rushed out, raising the award to the air with one last big smile as Meryl guided me backstage to answer some questions. Just before I was off sight, I turned and looked out to the stage once more.

Reader’s Corner: Skip and Loafer, Zom 100, and Megumi Hayashibara’s Characters

A Sign of Affection, Vol. 3

A Sign of Affection continues to sweep me off my feet! Volume three begins with all the giddy expectation that volume two left me on. Yuki and Itsuomi continue their conversation of how far does it go when it comes to Itsuomi and the answer to that question leads to the beginning of a sweeping romance that I have been longing for since the beginning of volume one! In no way did this story disappoint (except maybe in the slightly smaller size of this volume compared to the previous two) because Itsuomi was full of surprises that had me turning pages quickly. I deeply enjoyed seeing him open up more and how deep his feelings go for Yuki. I also continue to deeply enjoy Yuki’s character; her bravery in speaking her feelings continues to inspire me! While the romance is most certainly my favorite part of this series, I also continue to love the sign language part of this manga a lot, too, and the thought the creators put into this series because it is extremely powerful to read. There are subtle things that I wouldn’t have even thought about, but makes me realize how I take certain forms of communication for granted. (A great example of this is when Yuki internally mentions it’s harder to sign when she’s holding hands.) A Sign of Affection definitely continues to be in my top three favorite series this year and already desperate for volume four!   ~ Laura A. Grace

Megumi Hayashibara’s The Characters Taught Me Everything

During the past four decades, Megumi Hayashibara has voiced some of anime’s most popular and iconic characters, including Rei Ayanami (Evangelion), Ranma Saotome (Ranma 1/2), Lina Inverse (Slayers), and Jessie (Pokemon), so it makes a great deal of sense for this unconventional memoir—first made available digitally in both Japan and the U.S. and now available in print—to move chronologically through dozens of her characters as the voice actress and musician writes about her relationships with industry staff and actors and gives life advice. Hayashibara’s voice is strongly present in every part of the writing—she emphasizes that these are her words, and that’s both part of the fun—getting insight with seemingly little editing—and what leads to a quite meandering book, with Megumi discussing two to three topics for each character. Generally, she’ll discuss her experience in voicing the character, and then what that experience or the character taught her about about life (also included are a number of new illustrations by the artists who originally developed the characters, some with notes celebrating Megumi). The thoughts sometimes feel random, though I can’t say I was ever bored. The book reads a bit like a history of voice acting in Japan, while also conveying the actress’ wisdom and caring. However, at times, I wondered who this was written to—super fans of Megumi? A new generation of fans? As a manual for voice actors? For Japanese readers? English-speaking? Ultimately, it’s firmly a work written to all the above, and indeed to anyone with a passion for anime or voice acting. Although not all the sections will be of interest to every reader, and one might disagree with some of her assessments and advice, it serves as a testament to Megumi’s heart for the craft, industry, and fans that she can reach out to such a wide audience and successfully convey to that vast spectrum her experience and love. ~ Twwk

The NPCs in this Village Sim Game Must Be Real!, Vol. 1

Yoshio is a thirty-something NEET living at home, but totally alienated from his family. One day he receives an unsolicited opportunity to playtest a new game he’s never heard of. In it, he plays as the God of Fate, watching over and guiding some villagers. But a lot of things are strange. Maybe the incredible graphics are just cutting-edge tech, and the hyper-realistic NPCs are some new form of AI. Maybe. But it’s pretty weird that Yoshio didn’t need to sign an NDA; he just gets a letter asking him not to tell anyone about the game. Also, why would the alpha version of a game have microtransactions? And isn’t it weird how committed the developer is to this gimmick of sending Yoshio packages of meat, fruit, and even lumber that exactly match whatever the villagers offer to their god each day? In addition to the gaming, fantasy, and mystery elements, this volume is surprisingly heartwarming, as Yoshio’s villagers inspire him to start turning his life around, to get a part-time job and begin to rebuild relationships with his parents and sister. I found this combination of themes unexpected, but a lot of fun. I quite enjoyed this volume and will definitely pick up the next one. ~ Jeskai Angel

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Vol. 3

The peculiarities of Zom 100—how it balances out quite serious themes about a workaholic society society with comedy, fanservice, action, and really macabre illustrations—finds a comfortable stride in volume three. One single, short arc occurs from beginning to end in these chapters, as formerly overworked Akira once again finds himself trapped by his old manager, as do Kenichirou and Shizuka, who now seems to more or less officially be part of the group. As Akira retreats back into his old self, Shizuka’s unexpected backstory is revealed, fleshing out her character and transforming her more fully into a likeable character. A brisk read, volume three doesn’t seem to be particularly consequential, but it’s a nice respite from the almost too-big story of the initial releases, and continues to do an admirable job of sitting solidly within the zombie genre while poking fun at it. And while the smallness of a mini-arc leads Zom 100 toward more traditional shonen territory than in previous volumes, it also exposes the story as having a strong enough foundation with its three main characters to push the tale forward as more than a simple shock story or exercise in imagination. This is a good manga, and one that any fan of shonen or comedy should try out—even those that, like me, find zombies to be a bit much. ~ Twwk

Skip and Loafer, Vol. 1

While A Sign of Affection was my most anticipated manga of the year, the latest release of Skip and Loafer volume one is almost its equal! I preordered it months ago because I loved the premise of a “country mouse” (Iwakura Mitsumi) moving to Tokyo to attend a local high school near the aunt she will be staying with so she can reach her dreams of one day attending Tokyo University. Combine that with rekindling old and forming new friendships, getting lost, and the inklings of a blooming romance, and I’m hooked! Iwakura truly is such a fun and down to Earth girl that made me laugh more than once in this volume.. She’s so open and honest, and genuinely wants to give her all. Throw in the super kind “hunk,” Shima, in her new school adventures, and I had a really great time seeing their friendship unfold! The relationships are one of the most exciting things about this story because each of her new friends are so different, but they all really form a “connection” with Iwakura that is special. Due to these new friends Iwakura has made, I already went ahead and preordered volume two because I need more of this story! Skip and Loafer is a very calming and fun slice-of-life read that had me smiling as I turned pages—I loved the story more as it progressed and really enjoyed many of the characters. A fun read, I definitely look forward to seeing what happens next! ~ Laura A. Grace

High School Debut, Vol. 4

This has been the best volume yet of High School Debut! One thing I have really come to appreciate about these volumes is that even if they feature lot of drama, tears, and misunderstandings, they still get a good solid ending with happy closure. I feel this is a rarity in shojo manga, with High School Debut not only lacking cliffhangers, but also providing “happy endings” of sorts. I know volume four really fulfilled all the happy feels and I absolutely loved it! It also made me realize that the “Christmas date” is my absolute favorite kind in shojo manga! I deeply enjoyed the one in this volume, even if at times I felt bad for Haruna (because oh no to her plans!). She is so so so sweet! Yoh, on the other hand, is a very patient man! I couldn’t help but start to admire him, too. It was really nice to see Yoh smile more in this volume and see that he actually does have a funny streak with the ending making me laugh!  ~ Laura A. Strobe Edge, Vol. 9

There’s no obstacle left in the way between Ren and Ninako—not a real one at least. Instead, Ninako continues to make assumptions about Ren, while Ren may be waiting too long to tell Ninako about his feelings. Everyone else in the story, including Ando and his girlfriend, as well as a new sorta love rival in this chapter and the last, are superficial challenges at best to the ones in their own minds, which is what makes Strobe Edge so frustrating. If the pair would just talk things out, rather than depend on their own self-justifications and poor advice from others who in some cases barely know them, the story would be concluded. But I guess that wouldn’t be much fun (and admittedly there are fun scenes in this volume, including a “gotcha” moment at the very end that’s one I haven’t seen before and which drew me vividly into how that scene might happen if I were one person or the other engaged in it), and it wouldn’t be very teen-like, which if nothing else, describes these kids and how they think—which perhaps is what should be expected from this series after all. ~ Twwk

Oi Liv! Gorgeous question, thanks so much. So, I guess watching series is a hobby, right? lol I'll be cheeky then, and talk about Brazilian series, as most folk around here didn't have the opportunity to discover Brazilian audiovisual art amazeness! Let's do this!

Once upon a time, 15 years old Tainara wanted to study audiovisual arts/cinema, to write screenplays for Brazilian Telenovela. I was OBSESSED with telenovelas since I was a kid. Many of you probably don't know this bit of information, but Brazil used to be the biggest exporter of soap-operas in the whole world. We are BLOODY GOOD AT IT. :) I think it shows, now that we have the opportunity to watch international series online. What to say, drama and creativity run deep in our veins, with hot Latin blood. xD

WARNING: I just realised that being Brazilian, we end up normalizing so much violence. I don't wanna trigger anyone, so be responsible. The only soft one is Capitu, you can jump to that rec and vid if you prefer. CW: drug use, violence, murder, domestic violence and other. well, tipical latin american film/series to be fair. how sad is that? fml.

5 Brazilian series you should watch:

DOM (2021, E+, Amazon prime)

I just finished watching this series and, as always, the depth of the plot is stunning. This series talk about Pedro, a boy from Rio de Janeiro who ends up involved in drugs and criminality. The gorgeous thing about this series, is the amazing 360º approach they take on the story of cocaine in Brazil, in the favelas, how drug addiction impacts the individual, the family, the community, the police, etc. It's really hard to watch bc it's very intense. The acting is gorgeous, the soundtrack is marvellous, the plot is deep and angsty and sexy and oh man, I miss Brazil.

(cw: drug use by adults AND minors, a lot of violence, torture, police brutality, corruption, guns, there's OD, and a lot of great naked sex scenes done the brazilian way: I mean very explicit and crazy hot!).

Girls from Ipanema (2019, E, Netflix)

Hear me out, this series show a bit of the Brazil from the 50s-60s. It's the story of Malu, a woman from Sao Paulo's high society that after being abandoned by her husband, decides to try her life in Rio de Janeiro. It's a story about women empowerment, as along the way she meets other incredible women. The series touch topics as racism, sexism, domestic violence and growth. It's AMAZING. The actresses are all wonderful, the soundtrack - as always - impecable. We get to learn a bit more about how Bossa Nova was born in a incredible mix of Samba from the favela and Jazz. Please do yourself a favour and watch it!

Invisible City (2021, teen and up?, Netflix)

Well, this one is a tad bit lighthearted. There's murder mystery alright, but it's mixed with Brazilian Folklore!All the old legends us Brazilians grown up listening too, there's the river dolphin, the mermaid, the Cuca, Saci... While investigating the murder of his wife, detective Eric is surrounded by invisible forces and magic and suspence. Dudes, this was such a cool watch! just amazing how they made it work, the folklore and the mystery, it's lovely really!

(cw: a bit of violence, a bit of corruption, a bit of dark magic, but it's soft compared with the recs above)

Capitu (2008, T, online probably)

This is a series from 2008, and you probably won't find it in English. I hope I'm wrong, because Capitu is a bloody spectacular creation. It's a short series based in one of the most (if not THE most) aclaimed book of Brazilian literature: "Dom Casmurro" (1899) by Machado de Assis. It is, most definitely, one of my favourite books and author of all times, with unreliable narrator done as brilliant as heaven. It's a story about two teenagers who fall in love against their family approaval, and how, after years in the Seminar, Bentinho (the protagonist and narrator) goes back to Capitu (the girl, the mysterious love interest) and then, a lot of jealousy and shit happens. Anyways, the series is a bloody delight, they got theatre actors, they did not add a stable escenary and decided on a turning one, it's actually done as a play, you feel like you're in the theatre watching it happen in front of your eyes, mesmerised. Sometimes, I wish everyone understood Portuguese, bc honestly, this series is a dream come true. If you can't find it subbed, try to buy and read the book, you won't regret. I couldn't find a trailler in english but I found the videoclip for the series with Elephant Gun, the music theme of the opening. So I hope you all enjoy!

Aruanas (2019, E+, GloboPlay)

Next one on my list ! It's a political-corruption series about Enviromental Activism and Realistic Murder Mystery, probably based in real facts in Amazonia. The casting is TERRIFIC, I'm in love with all of them! Such great actresses. I can't wait to watch it. Seems pretty violent though, but very empowering for the activists out there, that like me, are fighting the good fight against a corrupt government and oppression of vulnerable communities.

(cw: violence, guns, murder, indigenous murder, sex. Probably a lot more, but I haven't watched yet, sorry)

Where does your personal connection to Germany and the German language come from?

My parents had friends who lived in Bielefeld and we used to visit them in North Rhine-Westphalia during the school holidays. Traveled from England by car! That’s how I learned a little German as a child, and later I learned it as a subject at school. I even did a short internship there through our friends in Bielefeld. I really love the language. Funnily enough, I was later able to use my knowledge of German professionally, because my first film was “Hilde”, in which I was next to Heike Makatsch played the British actor and director David Cameron, who was married to Hildegard Knef. After that, I always hoped that there might be another chance to speak German in front of the camera, because playing in a foreign language is an exciting challenge. When the chance arose to shoot “I am your person”, I could hardly believe my luck.

Did you know the director Maria Schrader who gave you this chance?

Funnily enough, when the script for the film landed on my table, I had just watched the Netflix series “Unorthodox”, which she directed. I had also watched a few episodes of “Deutschland 89”. In general, I knew that she was a great German actress, not least because friends who knew their way around the German theater scene often raved about her. Working with her was a joy now. Her understanding of actors is quite instinctive and brilliant. I have seldom seen someone who can help an actor who is having difficulties with a scene with such simple means.

The fact that you had already seen “Unorthodox” shows, of course, how quickly “I am your person” must have been implemented in the past year …

Oh yes, that was really quick. In March I was still in New York and was about to premiere a new play on Broadway. But then the pandemic came, everything was canceled and I flew back to my family in Los Angeles. A few weeks later, Maria and I met each other via Zoom - and shortly afterwards I was sitting outside in a café in the Berlin June sun for the first time in months to discuss the upcoming shoot with her. That was pretty surreal because I hadn’t actually left the house since March.

Is it correct that you oriented yourself to Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart to portray the romantically programmed robot Tom?

In any case, these were role models that Maria and I spoke about. When you think of the game between the two of them, you always see an enormous clarity and directness. Cary Grant, for example, was always quite funny, especially in his romantic roles, but also flawless in an almost artificial way from today’s perspective. I found that very suitable for a robot. Apart from the fact that the ideas that Tom and his algorithm have of romance and love are certainly also shaped by the classic romantic comedies from Hollywood. Oh, the woman is sad, so I’ll bring her flowers! Such automatisms from the stories from back then were very appropriate for Tom now.

Keyword role models: Who shaped you in your career as an actor?

There were of course many. Jimmy Stewart was certainly something of a role model. My mom and I watched a lot of his films when I was little and I was always impressed by the kind of sweet tragedy that went into all of his roles. But maybe Robin Williams’ work influenced me even more. I always found the incredible variety of his films remarkable. He could make his audience laugh hysterically like no other, but also move them to tears in other roles. I always wanted to emulate this range.

In fact, the range of your roles is enormous and ranges from the Disney blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast” to a comic adaptation in series format such as “Legion” to bulky independent films such as “Her Smell” or the horror thriller “The Rental “, Which we just released on DVD. Is there a method behind this diversity?

Not in principle. I like variety, but I’m not just looking for roles that are as different as possible from one another. Rather, there are always similar factors that I use to select my projects. Sometimes there is a certain director that I really want to work with. Or the role itself is irresistible because it presents me with acting challenges. And sometimes a script is just fantastically written and I am interested in the topics it is about. With “I am your person” it was definitely the latter, especially since the timing was just right. In 2020 there were so many societal questions that ultimately touched the core of human existence. Such a script, which deals with something very similar in a light-footed way, was just fitting.

A few years ago you said in a questionnaire from the British Guardians that your greatest weakness was not being able to make up your mind. So every time you are offered a role, do you ponder whether you should accept?

No, no, when a script appeals to me, it actually does it very quickly. It’s such a gut feeling. If I’m unsure and skeptical, that’s a good indicator that this is not the right thing for me. That with the difficulty in making decisions related rather to something else. For example, it takes me forever to order in a restaurant because I can never decide what on the menu appeals to me the most.

You became famous with the role of Matthew Crawley in the series "Downton Abbey”. Did you immediately suspect at the time that something big was going on?

At first we were all pretty clueless. There are really many British history series, and we were one of them. When the first season aired in the US and was a huge success there, it was pretty unexpected. I never expected the impact the series would have on my career.

Barely ten years later, are you still being asked about the role?

Oh yes, regularly. Probably nothing will change about that either. I got out after three seasons!

In the meantime, however, the flamboyant Russian singer Alexander Lemtov from “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” should also be a character with whom you will be immediately associated, right?

Right, it has been mentioned more and more recently when people recognize me on the street. This charming, silly film obviously had a nerve with the audience last year in the middle of the corona pandemic. Especially since the real Eurovision Song Contest had been canceled.

The film was the number one topic of conversation on the Internet for a while - and Lemtov GIFs and memes were everywhere. Did you follow that?

It was really hard to avoid it. I wasn’t looking specifically for what people were posting. But of course my friends passed a lot on to me, and there were already some very funny Lemtov things. But he’s also a figure made for GIFs.

Another question every British actor under 40 has to put up with these days: Would you like to become the next James Bond?

Oh, of course, everyone gets to hear this question again and again who meets certain criteria. But it is completely hypothetical. Although a few years ago I read in an audio book by Ian Fleming’s “Casino Royale”.

You mentioned earlier that you and your family have lived in the United States for a long time. How big is your homesickness?

I actually feel very comfortable in Los Angeles. But every now and then I miss the sidewalk culture of European cities. People on foot, street cafes, things like that. Last year the longing for it was particularly great, although it was of course clear to me that there was a state of emergency in Europe too. In any case, I found myself reading books that were set in Europe and made me homesick. Which is why the unexpected trip to Berlin was really a boon.

You are also an avid cricketer. That’s certainly difficult in Los Angeles, isn’t it?

There are quite a few cricket clubs here. The only problem is that the few people who do the sport here are so good at it that I have problems keeping up. That’s why I always lose sight of the matter here a little. Even as a pure TV viewer, it is not easy to stay on the ball, because of course there is no cricket broadcast here at prime time. But as soon as I’m home in England in the summer, I really want to play again!

Growing up in California in my grandmother's house, surrounded by tías, tíos, and all my cousins, I always felt a deep connection to my Mexican-American roots. Every generation of my father's family has had incredibly different experiences that reflect much about American history. 

My great-grandfather on my abuela's side, Daniel Martinez, grew up in Mexico and immigrated to Los Angeles. Eventually, he saved enough money to open a neighborhood market, which is where he met my great-grandmother, Guadalupe Miranda Martinez. She had come from Mexico to Los Angeles with her mother and brother as a young teenager. They soon married and began having children. When he lost his business in the 1920s, the family turned to migrant farm work. They were forced to use segregated water fountains and bathrooms and my darker-skinned tíos and tías were sent to Mexican schools, while those with light skin and blonde or red hair were allowed to attend schools with white students.

Unhappy with the segregated schools, my great-grandfather joined up with other families to open the East Barrio School for Latinos in Claremont, CA — fighting the status quo is part of my heritage! They taught reading and writing in Spanish and learned Mexican history at a time when it was hard to show pride about being Mexican.

My great-grandfather on my abuelo's side, Catalino Alba, came from Mexico during the Revolution. He met my great-grandmother when he immigrated to Gallup, NM, where he helped build the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a musician and inspired my abuelo José Alba to sing, practice traditional Mexican dance, and become an accomplished classical guitarist. As a child, there was never a family party where my abuelo didn't play guitar while my abuela, tíos and tías, and cousins sang along. Perhaps this is where I got my love for the performing arts!

My great-grandfather moved to San Bernardino, CA, to work on the railroad and my abuelo José Alba grew up in the barrio where he and his siblings slept head to foot. With little food at home, he often asked the neighbors for fruit from their fruit trees. He was compelled to eat dirt, which he later learned was a natural response to the lack of iron that he needed in his diet. As a kid, he wasn't allowed to swim in a public pool without a certification of vaccination. He would often get glass stuck in his shoes because the soles were so thin and worn out — he couldn't afford anything else. At one point, glass punctured his foot, and as a result he developed lockjaw, which was nearly fatal.

When he could work, he made money selling oranges and picking potatoes. He says the first thing he did when he had money was to go down to Main Street to have his shoes shined by a young boy. He told that boy that he would come every week because he knew he was trying to make his own way too.

There were 12 kids in the family and my abuelo is proud that his mom figured out a way to send them to school as soon as it was possible. She understood the value of education. Even though it was hard for them, she made it a priority.

This is my abuelo and abuela's wedding above — so classic. I always thought our ancestors were Spanish, but I learned through genetic testing that they were Native American, with roots that may go back as far as the Mayan civilization. We've been here from the beginning!

My parents, Mark and Catherine Louisa Alba, were so different . . . but they had the same hairstyle! I know that when my dad was growing up it was difficult for him and his parents to be Mexican-American. The hyphen wasn't an option back then.

My abuelo had only learned English when he transferred to grammar school at around 6 years old, and he was way behind as a result. Like many others of their generation, my grandparents didn't teach their children, including my dad, to speak Spanish. My abuelo says that he didn't even think about it, but I wonder if he associated it with a difficult transition in his life.

I want my girls to embrace their Latino roots, know how much we have contributed to this country, and understand that the road ahead is richer when we acknowledge and embrace our heritage. I want them to learn Spanish like their great-grandparents. I'm incredibly proud of my diverse heritage and I want my daughters to feel the same way.

Jessica Alba is something of a triple threat: She's managed to achieve major success as an actress, fashion designer, and business mogul. It's hard to imagine anyone not wanting to work with Alba, but early in her career she had a hard time getting roles because of her race.

"They couldn't figure out my ethnicity," Alba said. "I would always go out for 'exotic.' They were like, 'You're not Latin enough to play a Latina, and you're not Caucasian enough to play the leading lady, so you're going to be the "exotic" one.' Whatever that was."

Of course, Alba eventually ended up starring in hits like Fantastic Four, Into the Blue, and Good Luck Chuck. So, yeah, it's safe to say she proved those people wrong.

And not only is this actress leading by example; she's also taking steps to change the game herself. The creation of Alba's cosmetics line, Honest Beauty, which she founded as part of her brand, The Honest Company, in 2015, stemmed from her own struggles as a young girl trying to find a foundation that matched her unique complexion. "I didn't feel like, when I was younger, that there were a lot of things offered to women of color," she said.

So Alba went out and made her own. "The philosophy around starting this beauty line is about enhancing who you are instead of cover up and turn you into somebody else," she said.

Jessica Alba’s startup The Honest Company is a veritable success — approaching over $350 million in sales during a year in which many companies struggled — but venture capitalists turned up their noses to the idea at first.

In 2009, Alba had a real issue: She couldn’t find baby products for her newborn that were guaranteed to be safe and eco-friendly. After having an allergic reaction to one of the allegedly baby-safe detergents she bought, she developed her idea the same way many successful entrepreneurs get started: She pitched building the solution she herself wished was on the market.

Alba pitched serial entrepreneur Brian Lee on her idea, who reportedly passed after saying it wasn't “very promising.” The feeling that others don’t see potential in you or your business idea is a familiar frustration for budding entrepreneurs. At the time, Alba remarked that she felt nobody took her seriously as an entrepreneur, or even believed in her idea, even though she knew there would be demand. 

But just five years later, The Honest Company reached unicorn status, valued at over one billion dollars. What changed in those five years that let her take her failed pitch to becoming a success story?

To perfect your pitch, experiment

Fast forward to 2012. Alba is now in Washington, lobbying for an update to reform the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act. Buoyed by her growing knowledge on the subject, she went back to Lee and pitched him again.

This time, her deck was much more concise, down to less than 30 minutes from start to finish. In a world where most entrepreneurs give up after a rejection or two, Alba instead had spent the years between their two meetings pitching her idea to friends, getting holes poked in her positioning,and answering each and every supply chain question that arose. 

Another change had happened over the last three years: Venture capitalists like Lee, whom she was pitching, had all started young families. Alba’s pitch was rock solid, and as an added bonus her prospective investors wanted the product themselves. 

Lee said yes to the second pitch. The first year The Honest Company was in business, it reported an astonishing $12 million in revenue, a number that has only increased each year. After facing initial rejection on her pitch, Alba’s decision to persevere has led The Honest Company to dramatic success.

At first, everyone told Alba she should start with one product, then expand once that was successful. But this didn’t gel with Alba’s vision of a complete line of baby-safe products; the founder knew parents who wanted clean products wanted a brand that could provide multiple solutions.

Ultimately, Alba ignored the conventional advice and launched with 17 products, which many people believed was too many. But because she didn’t compromise on that, either to venture capitalists or herself, the launch was a total success.

Live Watch: Guardian  Episode One, Part One

It's Guardian!  The show that got me interested in this genre!  I love spooky things and I love mysteries and fantasy!  I simply adore it so much!  When I can't sleep I just put on a playlist of Guardian in the background.  I was aware of censorship before - every country has some version of it, but to some degree this was my first deep dive into how it might effect a piece of media.  Guardian is exceptionally acted and incredibly written, as well as suffering from obvious dubs where the dubbing voice actor sounds nothing like the previous actor and odd cuts that are disrupted.  In some ways it's the little drama that could fighting its way past their studio going bankrupt while they were filming, reshoots, and being taken down and altered several times.

In some ways Guardian's struggle fits the spirit and aesthetic of the show. Worn in like an old pair of jeans but still making an effort.  Putting emphasis where things count and hoping the kindness of the universe will make allowances for the rest.  Attention to detail where the story really matters.  It has the charm of a community production put on out of love with actors and crew who would not be anywhere else in the world for any amount of money.  That feeling of love comes through, and whether or not I'm barely literate I have so many words to share.

Part of why I love it as well is it has that feeling of 80s and 90s fantasy, like Moomin, Xena or Condor Heroes. Everything feels lived in, nothing's been spit shined except for Shen Wei's suits. It's an old city street of a show, it has history and character built in. 

*After all that I don't know that I have a tonne to say about the intro.  It's very good but it's also full of spoilers.  I think having the intro song be in English does make a difference in making it appealing to English speaking audiences as well as standing out as different and interesting, which the show is. Speaking of Spoilers!  Spoilers below!

* The obligatory beginning narration is beautifully animated, I have another post that will be done some time before the heat-death of the universe talking about the fascinating world building options.  Unlike some Make It SciFi plots, this one has legs and implications.

* Remakes rarely are able to meet the original on equal ground - and I struggle to believe the actors would Fit as well - but part of me really wants to have a chance to have the Dixingren worldbuilding really leaned into.  The writing is good enough we get implication but no real follow through.  I want fifty episodes of how Dixing functions, give me more pseudo-science behind the mutations, what are the biological differences.  I'm hungry for more!

* I love the cameos of later characters, and the way there was some effort to be discrete with spoilers.

* It's Ya Boy!  I love Shen Wei.  With that music cue and that sinister turn around they really set him up as dubious.  I wish they went with something a little different with the intro so his character wasn't spoiled.  The writing, directing, and acting was so good and spoiling who Shen Wei is kind of took the teeth out of that.

* Also cheers to the costume designer who outfitted Zhu Yilong so well and made him look jacked with the fit of those clothes.

* Also you can tell this is a real university because the staff has to sit in tiny student chairs.  I'm not joking, please be warned if you're going into academia.  Unless you have tenure life is An Adventure - and even then.

* Also shout out to Shen Wei's Prized Cabbage and the Queen of our hearts, Li Qian.  Why is this actress not in more things?  She has such an expressive and lovely face and she really goes all the way in with her acting.  I respect an artist that acts from their chest. Also that windbreaker, white skirt combo is chic and fun all at once, it draws the eye and makes her melt into the background all at once - perfect for the character.  I love her so much.

* Here's another one of Shen Wei's coats, it's a lovely color for him but it also is so thin that it looks like it crinkled up just from being worn.

* I'm being distracted by details and missing plot stuff.

* Story of my life.

* I love Li Qian hovering along behind Shen Wei like a duckling following their mother.  A) Mood and B) it quietly informs their dynamic.  Shen Wei has like one person he can trust but no one he can really confide in and it's the same for Li Qian. A ship will find a port in a storm and Shen Wei has Big Da-ge Energy. My fanfic heart hopes they found comfort in the pseudo familial relationship with each other while it lasted.

* Even in episode one we receive foreshadowing, we love and respect some excellent writing.  For those of you who missed it - Professor Ouyang is talking about Lin Jing who I love partially because he's so outrageous large but has the total opposite of intimidating energy.  

* What did they feed you Lin Jing? He is so tall and wide, but they do a lot with camera work to try to make him not quite as big.  Side note, I would really love to see the actor who plays Lin Jing (Liu Minting) both in more dramas but more specifically in a role where he was like a minister or scholar - someone intellectual.  I think the combination of being such a big gentleman and also someone who like plots or plans would be really dynamic if it was written well.  

* Also I like the exchange where without a word Professor Ouyang indicates he has one last thing to say, it's private and that he would like Shen Wei to ask Li Qian to leave. That's What You Can Do With Good Actors!

* Li Qian is just so pretty and the actress emotes so well!

* Shen Wei totally understanding what's going on with this shady research immediately and wanting to stay as far away as possible.  We see one of the first examples of him being aggressively polite to remove himself from a situation.

* "i'M jUST aN oRDINARY sCHOLAR." No one buys it Shen Wei.

* Angy Thinking Face

* One thing the show is really good at is using establishing shots really well so you always know where everything is and everything is going

* Guo Changcheng, all around good boy and angel.  We stan a nervous legend

* Zhou Yunlan Arriving.  Why is everyone on this show an Absolute Legend

* Guo Changcheng protecting himself with his certificate is too cute.  This young man is trying his best and I support him.

* Also that coat is Young, Pure, Stylish; I love it

* Zhao Yunlan, what's wrong with you? You are amazing!

* His irreverent style and disregard of usual policy makes him fit in really well with his band of misfits and special cases

* Guo Changcheng's OO face is too good, elastic face

* Da Qing my love!

* Jin Ling, I think he has an all seeing eye on his hoodie thing. Illuminati Confirmed.

* Also they filmed the shots so well, so you always know where everyone is in relation to everyone else

* Our Prized Cabbage!  I love her!

* Great handheld work: shaky and unhinged, but not migraine inducing

* Foreshadowing in the form of a shadow and reaching for the necklace

* Da Qing's cat behaviours. I really want behind the scenes of the actor discussing how cat was he going to cat

* We get our first real example of how Zhao Yunlan doesn't feel safe emoting negatively and so he uses a super sunny mask to hide his feelings, except with Da Qing who he lets his anger show with because he trusts him.

* I'm not even halfway through and I've written so much, peace and blessings to the readers of this.

* Zhao Yunlan's swagger, after his childhood having a little power must feel comforting and good

* I love how Da Qing is talking as a cat less than a meter from the medical examiner.  Does the examiner not care or does he know?  Is he deaf?

* Harassing Guo Changcheng is the new team sport

* Zhao Yunlan Realises Something Music

* Also, Lollipop Measurement

* It's nice to see Zhao Yunlan just being himself with Da Qing, he's able to really be honest and genuine with him

* Slow Look Moment

* This moment is so fascinating!  Shen Wei doesn't know what's going on yet.  He just sees an old friend who winces when he sees him and disappears.  We mostly see things from Zhao Yunlan's point of view, but from Shen Wei's perspective this is a first part of just some Odd and Confusing Happenings

* This cat though!  I love him!

* The delicate way they’re both feeling each other out.  This must be so confusing and startling for Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan is trying to figure out if this teacher is going to bust him or what.

* He forgot to let go, way to set off Zhao Yunlan’s suspicions

* “Mark Stewart” Is he though?  Who picked out that English name?

* Li Qian!  I love her and I love that striped blouse. Fashion.  Got to look good when you’re resisting a mental break. *Also she hears a meow and looks around at eye level, I love that for her.

* Zhao Yunlan!  You can’t take pictures of young ladies without their permission.  What is wrong with you!

* I love Da Qing’s very cat attitude of I Will Have Vengeance for These Wrongs

* Two for one! Shen Wei meets two faces from his past.

* Also, I get a little frustrated about people making a big deal about the 10,000 years versus 1,000 years age thing with Da Qing.  a) He has amnesia and b) the thousand years refers to the amount of time needed to cultivate to a certain stage in Chinese mythology - usually by absorbing energy from the sun, moon, or depending on the animal other sources.

* I feel so bad for Shen Wei, who knows what he thinks.  Were his friends brainwashed?  Did they forget?  Can they not say for some reason?  What is happening?

Rebecca Ferguson interview for CRASH Magazine (September 2020) - translation from French 

AB: You'll be starring in Dune which comes out at the end of this year. Everyone is eager to find out. How did you join this project?

RF: I had a meeting with Denis Villeneuve, the director. I find his work amazing and it was a dream to work with him. His films are always a feast for the eyes.

AB: This film is eagerly awaited, especially by the many fans of the books and the entire Dune universe. Do you feel a certain pressure not to disappoint the audience?

RF: I never feel pressure from the fans. It’s not my job. I have a lot of respect for them and want them to enjoy our work, but I can't please all the people who will go see the film and form their opinions. I remember Tom Cruise saying that everything he does, he does for the fans. I love it when people validate our work but to be honest I love what I do. I love creating a character, the incredible costumes, the make-up. And then work with the best in the world. If the film falters, at least I would have appreciated it. And then I like having conversations with people who don't necessarily agree with the film, it's interesting.

AB: I imagine you must have done a lot of research to prepare for this role.

RF: Oh my god, the whole universe of Dune is so hard to understand. I still barely understand it, even after the shoot. Why are we doing this? Where should I go? Who should I trust? (laughs) So yeah, I did a lot of research. Denis also did all of his own research that I could lean on. The make-up artist was a veritable well of knowledge and stories. And then Jacqueline West, the costume designer, compared our clothes to paintings, from the Renaissance, to Cubism, etc. I barely knew what she was talking about. I just smile. I was working with the experts from the experts. So I hope that at least some things have been achieved.

AB: You are going to shoot additional scenes soon?

RF: Yes, we're going on the set in August...

AB: How long have you lived in Sweden?

RF: I was born in Sweden and have lived there all my life. Then I moved to England a year and a half ago but I divide my time between my small fishing village and London.

AB: Is it important for you to have a foothold in Sweden?

RF: Yes, I have a thirteen year old son who lives there with his father. We're all very close so it's important for me to be where he is. We all travel together, we are a bit like a circus family. (laughs) My son goes to school and it was important not to break his habits and his circle of friends. Thirteen is an important age. With his father and his mother-in-law, we travel together as much as possible and we meet for the holidays. We make it work.

AB: What was your first encounter with cinema?

RF: I don't know how old I was anymore but I remember that when Beauty and the Beast came out in the cinema, I was scared but I still went to see it. I was upset because I was in love with the Beast and when he transformed into what everyone considered to be the perfect man, I found his new face not as alluring as his monster appearance. I wanted him to stay the Beast.

AB: When did you first consider being an actress?

RF: The funny thing is when I was young I never thought I would be an actress. I was fifteen or sixteen when I was taken to play in a series in Sweden. Before, I didn't like being on stage; I never took acting lessons in school. I was in a music school. I didn't have a lot of dreams or career plans. I was one of those kids who did what they were told to do. You have to go to school, do this, do that. You know the song; we call it the school system. Then when I was asked to do this casting for this show, I was terrified. I got the part and that's when my interest in acting started. I realized there was a world in which to hide. I could play characters without having to take responsibility for their actions... and apparently people thought I was good. Good enough to continue anyway.

AB: How did you find yourself participating in this casting?

RF: My mother had decided that I was going to model, even though I don't have the size or the body you would expect from a model. I ended up in a file called “normal people”. (laughs) I didn’t get a single job; it didn't suit me. My sister is a catwalk model so she knows how to do it. Me? Not at all. So I was on their file and I was constantly turning down jobs, I didn't want to do it. Then a casting agency was looking for an actress for this series having already selected the actors who would play her father and her mother. They flipped through model portfolios and then they found me.

AB: How did this first experience go? I saw that you had to act in several episodes a day.

RF: Yes, two and a half episodes a day. It was intense but I was thrown into a world I knew nothing about. I was a blank canvas. I had no expectations and didn't question how it worked. It made me realize that I love to work hard with imposed deadlines. I like to be thrown into difficult situations. It all happened naturally and I took this route.

AB: What was it like seeing yourself for the first time on TV?

RF: There is nothing natural about it. I remember that for the first episode in the series, my mother decided to have a big party with lots of guests. I was more excited about the evening than the rest and when the countdown to the screening started I remember feeling nauseous. I hid behind the sofa. It was very embarrassing. But on the other hand, I thought it was cool. It was a whole new situation, a new world open to me.

AB: After your debut in this Nya Tider series, did you take a break or did you continue to work non-stop?

RF: We actually shot for six months and then we had six months free. My stepfather at the time had the good idea to ask the production to hire me for the remaining six months. As I had left school, that meant I was employed full time, as an actress but also set manager, publicity assistant and everything the production needed when we weren't shooting. I learned everything behind the scenes, I was able to help with the script and the media part. It was the best job I had and it helped me understand the process better when I got back to shooting.

AB: What project did you work on next?

RF: Nothing happened for quite a while because it was a local show - I played a character that everyone associated me with. People recognized me and it was hard for some directors to see me in another role. Then a director called Richard Hobert offered me the lead role in his film “A One Way to Antibes”. It was my first role in the movies and from there I was able to meet agents. It was my gateway to the big screen.

AB: You then got the lead role in the BBC series “The White Queen”. Were you a fan of British television?

RF: Yes, my mother is English so I grew up watching UK programs. Yes Minister, Cracker ... there has been so much British TV in my life that this BBC production was perfect for my entry into the big leagues. This casting process has been probably the most exhilarating of my career. The racing heart, the hope, the doubt, the disappointment ... an emotional lift that I finally won.

AB: What doors have “The White Queen” opened to you?

RF: A lot. First of all, I was nominated for a Golden Globe in the “Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film” category which is crazy. I remember being nominated alongside Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham Carter, Elisabeth Moss, who won for her role in Top of the Lake. I was in the same room with people I admired a lot. I always felt like the little Swede who had no place in this extraordinary world. But “The White Queen” has caused meetings and a lot of castings. “A One-Way Trip to Antibes” gave me the opportunity to find an agent in London and the first casting I tried was for “The White Queen”. It was lucky but I also worked hard for this role.

AB: How do you manage the castings in general? Are you still anxious?

RF: At the beginning, everything revolves around castings and meetings. In fact no, before that there are the videos that you make yourself. You have to find monologues, film yourself with your best friend, your boyfriend or your mother. After that, it's the castings. We do so much and it goes very quickly. Sometimes there is a big blockbuster and they are looking for an actress at the last minute. There you are at the restaurant and you have to run to the toilet, grab your phone and do something. You have to prove yourself by putting forward a certain trait of your personality to stand out among the four hundred thousand people who try their luck. I've always liked going to castings. A lot of people I met there were great and understood the horror of the situation. They made me feel relaxed. Again, I would throw myself into situations without giving it much thought and hoping someone would notice me. If that doesn't work, you have to move on.

AB: Are there any mentors that you have met throughout your career?

RF: Yes, Veronica St Clair was my coach in Sweden. After playing on the show, I missed the end of my schooling so I couldn't go to college. I would have started from scratch. But I had worked for two years in nurseries, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. I had left home and was living an adult life at a young age. I saved some money to pay for my personal development classes which helped me better express myself and improvise. I also contacted film schools who still needed free actors for their end of year films. I've done a lot, I don't know how many student films. I took what I could take. Veronica was unbelievable, she did so much for me. She has prepared me for many challenges. But at one point, we have the chance to stop casting. We make appointments. The dynamics are changing. It's not just about pleasing a director anymore, we have to like the project too, that it brings us something.

AB: It becomes a conversation.

RF: Yes. Can this film stimulate me? Is the project right for me?

AB: At what point in your career have you felt your opinion was as important as pleasing a director?

RF: After Mission Impossible.

AB: How did the casting go for this film?

RF: I was filming a miniseries called “The Red Tent” for Lifetime. Tom told me he noticed me on “The White Queen”. It's a funny story from their side because they had auditioned a lot of women without being able to find the right one. They had already considered me for the role, but I didn’t make a good enough impression for them to stop casting. (laughs) Then they had to do it again because the chosen person didn't suit. They are very careful and don't say too much when they tell these stories. I always wanted to know who the other woman was. (laughs) Finally, resuming the auditions, they decided to give me my chance. I was in Morocco, sitting on the camel Nicole Kidman had used for the movie “Queen of the Desert”. They called me to tell me that Tom Cruise wanted to meet me. They wanted to see if I could fight. It was quite surreal. They brought in the stunt teams who created the choreography. I realized I loved it. I could use my dance knowledge, which I have been practicing from a young age. They were very good martial arts trainers. And then I ended up getting the part.

AB: How did you appropriate the character of Ilsa Faust?

RF: I don't feel like I appropriated it honestly. There are certain characters that I personalize. But when it comes to Mission Impossible, Christopher McQuarrie is such a great writer that I focused on physical training and being part of an already formed team. As an actress, you have to bring something personal, the way I walk, I talk, I frown, I think, will be reflected in the character. I'm not going too far into the secrets or shadows of the director. There is a precise technique in the creation of these films. You have to have confidence, know your text and arrive on time.

AB: Was it the first time that you had to have such great physical preparation and stunts to do?

RF: I had never had so much need to train and be in good shape. Like I said, I love challenges and working hard to achieve a goal. I remember Chris telling me in an interview, “Tom is a movie star. Simon Pegg isn't just his sidekick, he's smart, funny. Luther Stickell also brings something. All of these male characters add something to Mission Impossible. Who are you? What are you bringing?”. I remember thinking about it, telling myself that Ilsa's character had to fill a void, that the film would miss her if we took her away. I had to find meaning in it. It's a balance between following something that has been created and leaving an imprint. This is something Tom and Chris have done very well. Ilsa has a real mission, she saves Tom. She is his equal. This is not a vase. But she's also vulnerable, she's scared ... she feels things. There was a lot to do on this project, to live up to what already existed.

AB: You've been in a lot of action and science fiction movies. What attracts you to this kind of cinema?

RF: I think I am drawn to all genres of cinema. What happened was, I played in Mission Impossible and people loved Ilsa. I proved that I could act out the fight scenes myself and I loved it. I think these kinds of films came naturally to me. But I try to vary the genres. My dream is to shoot in independent films. I want to go where I have never been. And I haven't made an independent film yet. A lot of people fight to shoot in big Hollywood studio movies and I was lucky to have had those experiences.

Cuban singer and actress Camila Cabello brings Cinderella to life in a new version of the classic fairy tale that breaks with the stereotypes of helpless damsels.

Tired of criticism, negative comments and disqualifications, Camila Cabello dispatched her critics with a forceful message that made clear the woman she has become. "We are real women, with curves, cellulite, stretch marks and fat, and we have to be proud of it," the actress and singer told those who questioned her physical condition. Now, the Cuban takes that declaration of empowerment to the movie Cinderella (Amazon Prime), in which the mold of conventional princesses is broken.

"I love how modern this version of Cinderella is and how it focuses on empowerment," the actress told People en Español exclusively. "I think other fairy tales do not accurately reflect women. In this one, Cinderella has dreams and ambitions, and wants to save herself, not that a prince or anyone else saves her. Nor is there a clear villain in the story."

The villain in real life are stereotypes and to get rid of them, Cabello does everything. "I think other fairy tales don't accurately reflect women," she says. "I think it's very important to love yourself and feel good on your skin."

What was the message of this new adoption that made you decide to be the new Cinderella?

I love how modern this version is and how it focuses on empowerment. I think other fairy tales have more outdated values and do not accurately reflect women. This Cinderella has dreams and ambitions, and she wants to save herself, not for a prince or anyone else to save her. There is also no villain in the story, it focuses more on people who seek to get ahead despite their emotional load and traumas.

This movie breaks all the stereotypes of the classic Cinderella story. An independent woman predominates, a young woman who has dreams and makes them a reality. What can you tell us about this story you may have known as a child?

I grew up as a big fan of princesses. I love that this version is fun and powerful. I think it is very important that we continue to show messages like this to younger audiences so that they see the value of having different dreams.

What was it like to work with Idina Menzel, Minni Driver and Pierce Brosnan? What would you highlight about them as people and professionals, what did you learn from them?

It was an incredible and unique experience. They are very professional and created a safe and cozy atmosphere on the set. I really learned from them and it became a very collaborative process.

Why should everyone see this new Cinderella? Especially young girls ...

This is a very enriching movie and I love that message. I think that increasingly, the same women are the ones who determine what we can do. [Women] are powerful, fearless, intelligent and we can do anything. This movie really shows that and it's so much fun!

What was your favorite scene?

I loved the scene when I met my Fab G (Billy Porter). That scene is very funny and also shows the importance of getting a little help and guidance, sometimes.

What did you enjoy most when bringing this character to life? Do you see yourself acting in the future?

This was one of the most fun experiences of my life. I would definitely love to continue acting in the future. In fact, I was able to write a song for this movie, so the acting and singing part was perfect for me.

Did the filming take place during the pandemic? How did that work? What were the measures they took to protect them all?

Part of the shoot took place during the pandemic, but when we were on set we followed all the protocols of covid-19, so no matter how crazy it was, everything felt very safe.

What would you highlight about the soundtrack of the film?

The soundtrack is great! I wrote an original song for the movie, so it was incredible to be part of it. I also love the dance scene where a version of Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" is played. This is the first time my character dances with the prince and the song is perfect for the scene.

You have always fought to break stereotypes. Why is it so important for you to use your life, your career and your image to empower women, to fight for mental health?

I think that helping other women to be strong, ambitious and support each other is very important, [also] helping each other realize our power, our potential. I love being able to be part of empowering other women to fight for their mental health and body positivity, but I also encourage all my fans to break any stereotype that is imposed on them.

What advice do you give to all the girls who don't feel good in their own skin? To the young women who admire you and to everything you do?

I think it's very important to love yourself and feel good in your skin. Everyone is doing the best they can and we are all simply human. Some days can be really challenging, but I think it is important to make the effort to feel good about yourself.

This last year and a half has been very difficult for everyone. Many have lost loved ones during the pandemic and others are very sick. How did you and your family live this stage? How did the pandemic change you?

I put a lot of attention into my mental health and I think prioritizing self-care is important. I like to meditate to calm down and I think meditating can be great for everyone. I also think it is important to appreciate the little things and really enjoy your time with family and friends.

What has been the most difficult thing you have faced as a professional and as a young woman? You must have to deal with a lot of pressure, how do you do it?

I started in the industry at an early age, so it was a lot of pressure when I started and even now. I think it's very important that you control yourself about how you feel and listen to what your body is telling you.
