surprisingly close to shigaraki, enough of a gamer to play with him, and even gets away with calling him out

(i’m debating how comfortable i am with fusing kids with adults. it seems weird to me, especially the bigger the age difference)

Edward Nygma is Autistic

A headcanon post by an Autistic person.

Eddie has no concept of social cues.

He often will ramble on and on about something and not realize he’s annoying or upsetting someone. Sometimes he can flat out say something hurtful, or rude, and not realize it comes off that way, “I’m just being honest? How is that rude?”

Eddie has a hard time understanding sarcasm, metaphors, and hints, he takes everything literally and at face value. (Extension of the above theory.)

A good example of this would be:

Let’s say Jervis is trying to lift something heavy. He casually mentions that it’s heavy, and still struggles without asking for help. Eddie might very well stand there and make sure he’s okay, but not offer any help because Jervis didn’t flat out ask for help. It’s not because he’s lazy, or because he wants to see his friend struggle, but because he doesn’t really understand that Jervis is indirectly asking Eddie to help him. His brain just works differently.

Another important thing to consider is that he’ll take things literally and at face value. If he were to see a picture, and asked to describe it, or to make a story, he would probably make a story based off of what was in front of him. Sees a picture of a roller coaster with two people riding on it? He’s gonna talk about the two people on the ride. He won’t talk about what happened before, or after, just what’s going on in the moment.

He’ll also struggle with things that aren’t obvious.

Example: Jonathan burned his tongue on the coffee making a hissing noise. Eddie looks over to Jon and asks, “Is it hot?” Jonathan looks at him and says, “No it’s lukewarm,” Eddie looks confused, and scrunches his eyebrows, “Then why’d you hiss like it hurt?”

Eddie has hyper-fixations.

Eddie has an obsession with riddles and puzzles. This obsession can be so strong that he finds it impossible to not leave clues, or a riddle of his own device behind for a crime, and it often gets him caught. He can’t help it. Riddles make him happy, they make him feel safe, and he’s happy when he can talk about them! He also loves to overshare with his interests, which.... leads back to him not understanding social cues...

Eddie’s father called him stupid.

As we all know Eddie’s father was a super abusive, alcoholic. He often called Eddie stupid, an idiot, worthless, etc. Which COULD be passed off as abuse yes- but it could also be much more than that. It could be that Eddie just didn’t understand certain things the way other kids did. He couldn’t make friends because he was too engrossed in what he was doing, he had trouble talking to people because he felt odd or excluded for liking certain things, or even DOING certain things. His father probably wanted him to be “Normal, like the other kids,” not obsessing over his interests.

Eddie’s ‘Stimming’ habits are there, but often hidden.

When Eddie gets excited, or really happy, his character can often be seen doing things like swirling his cane, gesturing with his hands, and overall just not stop moving. It could also be attributed to having ADHD (which I have no doubt he also has) but it could also be another aspect of his autism.

Eddie wears gloves.

Okay bare with me. Sure. They could be an aesthetic choice, don’t get me wrong. But you know one thing a lot of autistic people have in common? Things they absolutely hate to touch. Styrofoam, cardboard, carpet, something wet, and more often than not something sticky. Eddie could be avoiding all those bad touches by simply wearing gloves. After all he can’t focus if he’s distracted by something that gives him bad vibes.

And the big one, behavior mimicry.

Autistics have a very hard time understanding certain emotions, feelings, and situations. They feel alienated, or even misunderstood in their intentions. That’s not to say they can’t feel bad for a friend, or family member if something happens, but they may not have the same reaction a neurotypical person would have. Eddie mimics people with charisma, gives people the reaction that he SHOULD give them rather than one that would upset, or disturb someone.

He’d perfectly understand someone being sad- example, if one of Harley’s hyenas died, Eddie would understand that Harley is sad, and he does care for her, so he’d comfort her the way he’s seen other people comfort one another. If he didn’t have that knowledge, it wouldn’t be so far fetched for him to say something along the lines of, “At least joker didn’t kill them,” and he wouldn’t mean ANYTHING MEAN by that! He’d be trying to look at it from a positive light to try and cheer Harley up, but it would be easy to see how it could come off as mean, or hurtful.

So yeah. I think Nygma is Autistic. Low-Key makes me a little happy thinking about it ^v^

((ooc: Okay so basically I got an idea form a song completely unrelated to the fandom and long story short, Bi n Bu are no longer able to escape from the Egg except through a very specific method, and then Karl comes back along and bippity boppity your body is now our property!

So, yeah. Body-swap AU except Karl kinda dies because to get the swap to work everyone's body had to die. Karl's gets healed afterwards through magical time shenanigans-

So Billiam and Rune(Bu's new name in this AU) wake up in the library, in our current DSMP present, in the weird body of this weird guy who's apparently a weird color-shapeshifter.(yeah, i'm going with the cryptid creature Karl for this one because. it's cool as heck and I never see this anywhere)

a little while after they wake up in the present, karl wakes up after being dormant because he literally died and it's like "HEY WAIT WHAT THE HECK YOU STOLE MY BODY" and everyone else goes "shit shit shit shit"

p.s if you're wondering where hubert is he's dead. the egg killed nearly everyone except billiam and butler because bi is its main caretaker and bu will never leave his side

Now I'm not a system but I imagine these four(yes, four; Billiam, Rune, Piam(Billiam's Piglin side), and Tune(Bu's Other) operate kind of like one. They have an innerworld and everything, they aren't just all constantly crammed into the front. That would get confusing, stressful and difficult to manage overall. Bu's usually the one fronting because no one else wants to; Billiam doesn't wanna do it because he doesn't wanna mingle with the "poor", Tune doesn't wanna do it because it always gets tripped up with literally everything about the body, it's not even dangerous enough to protect now, and Piam doesn't wanna do it because he's kind of scared of the Overworld someone that doesn't know how to be a Human Person

Oh yeah and I've also talked about all this and more with my bestie so here's a copy-paste of that conversation-

I think an encounter with Sapnap and/or Quackity would go terribly too, until they sit down and explain things as best they can wait no actually "So basically, we killed your fiancée so we could inhabit his body and escape from a really bad situation. sorry" Acid Sapanap would go feral and I can't even begin to conceive what extremely destructive thoughts Quackoty would start having Me MHM Sapnap probably pulls a sword on them and they automatically reach for their own before remembering "Oh shit, we don't have it. OH SHIT-" and then they just gotta r u n Butler's trying desperately to teleport but without a pearl, eeeeeh that's not gonna do anything buddy I'm not sure if Karl has armor in his inventory or not but either way they wouldn't have the time or coordination to equip it Acid they just immediately die it'd be so funny Me "NOT AGAIN, WE JUST GOT FREE- death" Now lets hope either Karl has some extra canon lives, or those lives Billiam bought carry over Acid PFFFFT, BILLIAM'S LIVES GET CARRIED WITH THEM AND IT'S JUST revives ok listen we don't gotta dies revives please let's just dies revives why do you do t dies revives this is just gonna last forever isn't it? dies rev- Me wheeze YEAH "GET OUT OF KARL'S BODY!" "We can't!! It's already been done!! dies" "WHY WON'T YOU DIE!!?" "We are!!??" ohhh, bonus angst points if every time they die, Butler goes a little more dormant- Butler was only meant to have one life, he never got any Totems and his soul cannot take this in the way Billiam's can After about 15 deaths, Billiam gets Sapnap to stop for about five seconds, and in those five seconds he realizes that he can no longer hear or feel Butler Acid oh god Me If he manages to get far enough away and find someplace to hide(perhaps the library again), he dips into the headspace and finds Butler just gone. He looks around for a while and finds them far away from where they were, collapsed on the ground, flickering slightly, and entirely unresponsive. And no matter how much he tries, they just won't wake up, and their Ender half has disappeared completely. He can't do anything except wait for them. Acid fjsjdj oh my god imagine Billiam just goes feral after that he's like "what did you do to m y B u t l e r" and just jumps on Sapnap with his bare hands Me Oh absolutely, he will Murder Sapnap without a second thought and he doesn't care how many deaths he has to go through to do it even though dying more will make it take longer for butler to wake up, and then afterwards he'll be pacing around random areas stress-stimming intensely and waiting for his child to wake up Acid yeap Me Somehow he finds his way to Kinoko Kingdom and is like "oh, this looks like a good place for a walk" and then spends the entire time not actually looking at anything and drowned in anxiety

AND THEN THESE WERE LAST NIGHT'S THOUGHTS, SOMEHOW LATER ON THEY END UP AT SAPNAP'S PLACE CAUSE THEY TECHNICALLY DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO STAY Unless you count the library but I don't think that would be very comfortable-

Anyway, Rune was fronting when they fell asleep and then their chronic nightmares came back. Sapnap wakes up(or was he ever really sleeping?) to some almost animalistic gasping in the other room and runs in to find Karl Karl's body curled on the bed, barely humanoid and random flashes of color spiking over him in waves and clawlike hands digging into his head

So he tries to wake him up, and when he does Bu's first reaction is to scramble away in pure terror because he's not fully out of the nightmare yet, there are even tears running down his face that just get absorbed back into the mass of color. Sapnap tries to calm him down, and eventually succeeds enough to ask him what the hell happened, and who's fronting once he remembers that that is a thing-

Thing is, Bu's gone nonverbal, but hey at least Karl was some sort of shapeshifter so they can just shift blobs of color into the air to answer Sapnap's questions

He very quickly learns only to ask yes/no ones because he can't read Galactic which is the only thing Bu can respond in, but that whole night ends on a pretty good note :3

Acid IS KARL IN THE SYSTEM CANON? HE'D BE THE MAIN FRONTER IF IT IS I THINK Me After that nightmare Rune finds himself trusting Sapnap a little more but also not as able to front, he's just so tired of it. No one else wants to front, he always has to stay there and he never gets a break. At least before, Tune had control during the night and he got to rest some. Now his sleep schedule is just as abhorred as before and no one else even comes near the front. He tries as long as he can, for everyone else's sake, but after weeks of fronting alone he just can't anymore. So he finally leaves the front and just collapses face-first into idk a patch of grass in the innerworld or something, and he's so exhausted of being a person that he can't even think straight, He doesn't want consolation, he doesn't want promises, he doesn't even want cuddles he just wants someone else to take over for a bit. Me OOH MAYBE He wakes up and wanders around the innerworld figuring out what the heck is going on and wondering why he can't see the outside anymore and oh god is he dead, are they all dead maybe they're all dead and none of them know it, and then Rune comes out of front and practically begs to not have to be a person anymore, he tells Karl "please i just want a break, just go out there or get someone else to go out there for a while please" and, well, Karl takes a chance and goes out to front and holy shit is this the real world, holy shit are those his fiancées, holy s h i t Acid THAT'S THE BESR OUTCOME ACTUALLY Me YESSSSSSSSS MASQUERADE SYSTEM + KARL THE MAN HIMSELF JACOBS Acid YESSS Me Karl and Rune are now host and co-host, because. no one else wants to front Acid Karl tricking Billiam into fronting.mp4 Me GSHDFGBSGDHFBSF Rune and Karl lock him into front and Rune proceeds to lean against the nearest flat surface, slide down and then dissociate for the next couple/several hours Karl makes sure no one disturbs him, even if Tune and Piam are Very Worried about their exhausted Human hybrid Acid them taking care of Rune (affectionate)

Acid OK WAIT I WAS THINKING AND IN SYSTEMS PEOPLE USUALLY MANIFEST SO I WAS THINKING HOW THAT'D WORK IN THE MASQUERADE SYS AND I REALIZED THAT EVERYONE IN THERE IS TECHNICALLY DEAD IN A WAY WHAT IF THAT'S THIS AU'S LIMBO? ONE DAY WILBUR POPS UP AND COMMITS MULTIPLE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY Me HOLY SHIT OH SHIT EVERYONE THAT PERMA-DIES JUST ENDS UP AS AN ALTER IN KARL'S WEIRD COLOR-SHAPESHIFTING BODY XDDD You can always tell who's fronting by the colors, as long as you actually know them enough to know their colors- Acid Wilbur: hello Quackity, I am BAC- Karl: oh my GOD Wilbur shut the FUCK UP we understand it you're gay now please get out of front I have a date in 10 minutes Acid OOOOO YES Me Like Rune is purple/pink(mainly pink) gray-red/dark purple/orange/green eyes(right/right/left/left, respectively), and then he has some other colors sifting through, like a dark indigo-blue and a yellow the color of Endstone Tune is all of that but some of it is darker(the pinks/purples and Endstone color), some of it's the same(the eyes, except they have a light pink shine over them) and some of it is inverted. Clouds will waft around the body when it's fronting and whenever you look through the clouds you'll see the colors inverted Billiam is solidly pale pink except for his eyes(maroon) and his hands and feet(gold, with veins streaking out and tapering off at about the elbow) Piam is a slightly redder pink, with spots of a Netherrack color here and there, and his gold is more orangey, like there's fire reflecting off of it karl is just. karl. Of course he's got the signature swirls in bright violent and teal but other than that he's just a smorgasbord of color, usually bright and neon. When he's near/thinking about Sapnap and/or Quackity, little hearts start popping off him

(Aria lived hand-to-mouth on the streets for a while during the start of her story, but built it back up after she returned to the Empire. She’s not quite “wealthy” but she did inherit a lot of her father’s things after his death so she’s what I would call “comfortable”.)

As a show of “good faith” after Yavin, Satele expunges her record and allows her to return to the Sith with Vano, since any further damage Aria could cause has already been done - she’s already been feeding the EmpireJedi intel for years by that point!)

i finally listened to all of the playlists and i have some Thoughts that i just really really want to share. i love all the playlists in their own ways but i do have some favourites

1. Janus’ Playlist

this one is SO GOOD so of course i’m ranking it first

just going by my own personal music taste, i love the vibes this playlist gives off with every single song. there wasn’t a single song i was tempted to skip

every single song perfectly fits our slimy snake boi

i love all the chill jazzy songs and the upbeat retro-sounding songs it has

i started happy stimming when Razzle Dazzle started playing so yEAH that’s a PRETTY good indication as to how much i love this playlist. imagine him doing jazz hands with all six arms with this song in the background. that is all

Billie Eilish is on this playlist so-

i am literally listening to this playlist again right now. i love my slimy snake son

As Far As I Can See made me a little emotional??? nobody’s listening to him, someone show my slimy snake boy some love please

if i could add one song to this playlist, i would choose The Room Where It Happens from the Hamilton Broadway Soundtrack. i think it gives off the same vibes, and the content of the song (“i want to be involved in things but i can’t be and i’m frustrated with not being able to have my input listened to because i’m not as important as everyone else”) really fits him.

2. Remus’ Playlist

IT HAS NINJA SEX PARTY ON IT. OF COURSE I LOVE THIS PLAYLIST

i’m used to stupidly vulgar songs because i listen to a lot of old Hollywood Undead so none of the songs made me uncomfortable

i love that he shares a lot of the same artists with Roman. Remus is Creativity 2 Electric Boogaloo, and it’s like he’s trying to take what’s Roman’s and make it fit for himself. like “hey, i’m just you but worse, you could have been me, and i’m not going to let you forget it so i’m going to warp what’s yours to fit my own ideas”

listening to Death as a Fetish made me SAD, i just wanna hug this stinky trash gremlin rat bastard now

a lot of the songs are just straight up bops that i have never heard before?? hello?? how have i not heard these before??? seriously thank u Remus for introducing me to these songs

if i could add any song to this playlist, i would choose Thermodynamic Lawyer by Will Wood and the Tapeworms. the absolute angry chaos of the song fits him perfectly, especially the beginning where the singer yells “i hold myself in contempt!” and the music kicks in. the lyrics are all over the place, if you can even decipher what he’s saying at all, and some of the imagery that comes with it is a little extreme and Remus-ish. it’s also just a song about hating someone’s guts, and judging from other songs on his playlist, it’s pretty clear that Remus seems to hate Roman a lot. basically i’m saying i can imagine Remus doing a big villain musical number to this.

3. Logan’s Playlist

BO BURNHAM!! WHITE AND NERDY!! THE ELEMENTS SONG!!! every single song on here made me go “oh my god HECK YES!!!”

One More Time With Feeling and Not Perfect made me emotional, i wanna hug my smart nerdy boy

just from my own music taste, not all of the songs were ones that i vibed with, but i enjoyed them nonetheless, and they all gave some really good insight to his character

imagining Logan listening to Letter C and Time Adventure makes me smile. i am a Logan stan first and human being second

the song i would pick to add onto his playlist is La La La by Naughty Boy. LOOK at the lyrics and tell me that doesn’t scream Logan. i think it would play into Logan’s unwillingness to acknowledge the others’ feelings and even ignore his own at times and act like he doesn’t even have any. he wants to be right and solve things with objective facts and he finds emotions tiring since he can’t make objective decisions when feelings are involved, so he blocks them out altogether.

4. Roman’s Playlist

this boy has a LOVELY music taste. it doesn’t fit my own super well but i still enjoyed all the songs

MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS!!!!

again,,,,, the fact that he and Remus both have a lot of the same artists on their playlists,,,,, i see what y’all did there, Thomas & friends. i see you

having Wonderboy on there made me think that maybe Roman and Remus used to have a good brotherly relationship, and maybe. maybe Roman wants to repair their relationship but Remus is stubborn and hates Roman for unknown reasons

most of the songs were bops and i love them

there are a lot of songs i would choose to add to this playlist but i’m going with Born This Way by Lady Gaga, because come ON you’re telling me that the gayest prince on this side of hemisphere wouldn’t have Lady Gaga???? it’s a crime to not have this song on his playlist. he also needs a little ego boost right now after SvS Redux and i feel like listening to this song would make him feel a little bit better. i think this song would highlight the few things Roman is really proud of and represent how he used to act before his self-esteem issues came into play

5. Virgil’s Playlist

lots of emo. i love it

a lot of the songs were similar to me and just kind of blurred together, but that’s probably just because i kept zoning out and doing other things while listening to this playlist. so, a plus for me is that it’s a good set of songs for me to play in the background while i’m busy to provide some noise

i love that it ended with Vindicated. i also lost my shit when it started playing Under Pressure but that’s just because i’m a Game Grumps fan and their bit in the Sonic Boom playthrough with the misheard lyrics makes me crack up every time

all in all, lots of chill songs, some angsty songs, the lyrics of most of them give us more context to his character

i appreciate that Thanks For The Memories is on here. hell yeah purp man, give us that early 2000′s emo music

I Disagree by Poppy is the song i would add to his playlist. Virgil said “i fight the man” and this song really has that “fuck the man i will fight authority” vibe to it. also you cannot convince me that Virgil isn’t a fan of Poppy’s new music. i kind of wish his playlist had some heavier rock stuff on it to show his former, more rebellious and cocky pre-AA personality, but i like what we got and how this playlist shows how much he’s changed.

6. Patton’s Playlist

these songs are so SWEET and i love him

i went feral as soon as i saw that New Soul was on here

however, i was very zoned out when i listened to this playlist so most of the songs blended together in my head and i hardly remember anything i heard. most of them sounded very similar

i do remember that i loved Turnaround, Oranges, and Oh Heart though!!! Oh Heart was probably my favourite from his playlist

i love that both he and Logan have a song from Tank and the Bangas on their playlists, and the songs are so different but still connected by the artist. it shows how different Patton and Logan are in every aspect but that they still need each other to do their jobs and that they can work together when they need to

overall a very chill but emotional playlist and i wouldn’t expect anything else from our lovely precious boy

the song i would add onto his playlist is Gotta Let Go by Hollywood Undead. it’s a very emotional song about letting go of the past and looking forward to the future. the “Moving On” episodes are what made me think of this song. i think it shows Patton’s overwhelming optimism about everything and his hesitation to move forward and stray from his strict optimistic morals.

Ah, yes, her ex-mistake. Folding her arms across her torso, Kaya sharply exhales.

“…so you wanna know about my ex, huh?” Like many of the things and people in here life… where to start is always the question. Frankly, she’d rather avoid talking about him every chance she gets. But the inbox has to be appeased, and it’s not like Frisk is around at the moment anyway…

Kaya huffs, her arms folding tighter as her glare grows sharper from the ugly, distasteful memories coming back to her again, as they always do.

“…Okay, sit down and shut up, it’s a long-ass story, and I’m only gonna tell it once.”

“It all started with a stupid teenager doing stupid teenage things because her parents were terrible at their jobs and knew nothing about having a disabled kid,” she starts with a slight sneer.

“I came out of my mom’s snatch kicking and screaming, and stayed kicking and screaming for years. Then, around elementary school, they introduced ABA therapy. I was emotionally and mentally abused all through elementary and middle school, and became a terrified, depressed shell of a kid who would do, say, and repress anything I had to just to make my parents happy. So they wouldn’t yell at me or grab me or take away something vital to my mental health.”

“Then high school came around, I’d just hit puberty, and I decided I’d had enough to being bullied by my own parents, my teachers, and the other students, and I became an A-grade bitch to everyone. Just to try to give myself control and empowerment in my life, I went from one extreme to another. I was a dumb, emotionally repressed teenager who jumped back to being a rebel, so I did a lot of shitty things. I had anger issues, was violent, and hung out with a lot of bad kids. I didn’t bully anyone, really, but I got into a lot of fights and only barely avoided getting arrested from vandalism and underage drinking a lot. Smoke weed a lot too. I was a rotten kid, but… honestly, it felt better than letting people grab my hands, shake me, yell at me and push my around… I was 14 and stupid, sue me.”

“Yeah, I make it sound like Aaron was one of the bad ones, but he was actually one of the only decent kids in high school at the time. He came from a pretty well-off family and kinda took pity on me. He wasn’t scared of me like some of the other kids, but he didn’t really pick a fight with me either. He was a good kid at the time, or at least that was the impression I got as a dumb, naive fourteen-year-old. He was nice to me, gave me rides home when I felt scared to call my parents, hung out with me, got me out of weed, booze and crime, talked to me, listened… He was good to me. Not sure whether that was genuine and he turned into an asshole or if he was always an ass trying to get into my pants, but it doesn’t matter. He’s a dick now.”

“I fell hard for the guy, being the idiot teenager I was. I was convinced that he was an angel there to save me from my shit-hole situation. Needless to say, we… did the deed. A LOT, actually. And finally, of course, we conceived Frisk when I was 15, had them when I was 16. Of course my parents weren’t happy, but that worked out for me because I hated them at the time. Was under the mindset if they hated it, I was doing something right. But even my grandmother, who was the only other decent person in my life, was voicing concerns about how fast I was jumping into things. And… like a dumbass, I ignored her. I was…”

Her glare finally falters and her face falls. As dumb as she always remembers she was in hindsight, she could never deny that she really did love the guy back in the day. At the time, he’d saved her, as far as she was concerned…

“I was in love… I… really thought he was my soulmate. So… I moved in with him after Frisk was born, and at first, everything was just great. I just stayed home with Frisk while he went to work, and we got married a week after I turned 18. But… once we made it legal and I was actually tied to him, things… started changing.”

“He never wanted to actually take care of Frisk. They were like a cute commodity to him; he never wanted to feed them, change their diapers, put them down for their nap, or look after them after daycare, it was ALWAYS on ME. Which I mean, fine, I didn’t wanna work and was controlling and protective over Frisk. But he never picked up the slack at home, he just went out to work, went drinking with his work buddies, and came home with dinner eventually.”

“And it just… got worse. No matter how stressed or sick I was, he’d never pick up the slack. He just enjoyed the perks and fun parts of fatherhood without trying to put in any actual work. Which I always justified with him being the breadwinner and being tired all the time. But when we learned Frisk was autistic when they were three…”

“He completely. Fucking. Abandoned them. All of a fucking SUDDEN, he had zero patience for just about anything Frisk ever did. Completely ignored them, got impatient with them whenever they started stimming–which, you know, I got onto him about. We fought a lot, and Frisk would always start crying because he’d convinced them our marriage problems were THEIR fault! Because I wasn’t going to let him snap at Frisk over shit they couldn’t help as a fucking four year old!”

“He deteriorated over two years’ time since we found out Frisk was autistic; he did his best to be good to me despite his mental shit, but he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Frisk. He was a pathetic shitstain of a human being. He started coming home late, getting drunk, we fought just about every goddamn day, and he kept getting onto Frisk, trying to make them be like me. ‘Your mom was like you and she learned how to be normal, why the fuck can’t you listen and learn to be normal–’ Like, asshole, do you even know me?! Since when have I ever been normal?! All that shit he sold me about accepting me as I was turned out to be bullshit.”

“I tried so hard to make it work, I tried to patch things up between me, Aaron and Frisk for years… I’d always been able to wrangle him in whenever he started yelling at Frisk, help them sort things out, and most of the time, he’d apologize… but the second he actually put his hands on them - grabbing their hands to make them stop stimming when they were crying, hard enough to bruise them, just after they turned five - I shut the whole thing down right then and there. I knew where this was gonna go and I wasn’t gonna see it through with Frisk. I wasn’t gonna let Frisk go through a worse version of what I went through.”

“In hindsight… I should have shut everything down when he started neglecting them. That’s just as much abuse as putting your hands on a kid is… but I was delusional. I was selfish… and wanted to make my relationship with the man he used to be work. But no matter how much I may have still loved him… I wasn’t gonna let him put his hands on my child a second time. Yeah, we fought physically and we damn near killed each other… pretty sure I scarred Frisk with that, but… ya know. I won, and now that prick knows better than to show his face around me or Frisk ever again.”

“There’s… a lot I should have done differently back then; a lot I should have done for Frisk’s sake. I know I wasn’t the best parent in the world for them at the time. I put my relationship before their wellbeing at the time, even if I didn’t realize it, and to be honest… I’ll be ashamed of myself for that ‘til the day I die. It shouldn’t have had to escalate to physical violence for me to wake the fuck up and get Frisk and me out of there, but it did…”

“So… it’s just me and Frisk now, and even though I had to step up and find work out of nowhere, start being the breadwinner AND the child rearer while still having shit support from my ‘told-you-so’ing family… we’re better off without that asshole in our lives. I know there are a lot of people who… might be better for Frisk, as a parent, but… I still wanna do the best I can for them and their future little sibling now that I know better.”

“And if that prick shows up again, this baby’s gonna have to deal for five seconds so I can suplex the dickweed. Not that he really would, he already only begrudgingly pays child support, but… ya know. Always good to be prepared. So yeah. I hate my ex’s fucking guts and I was an idiot for ever marrying him.”

TV Reviews: Atypical

Why do I keep letting Netflix fool me into thinking they’ll get mental illness portrayals right?

Atypical seemed like a promising coming-of-age story about a teenager on the autism spectrum, but as I kept watching, I kept feeling annoyed and angrily disappointed with the dumb sitcom cliches and a terribly insulting representation of autism. As a heads up, this review is from the perspective of someone also on the autism spectrum, and I’ll discuss some spoilers as well because bad representation needs to be understood if it’s not to be repeated.

We follow 18-year-old Sam Gardner as he begins his pursuit for a girlfriend for the first time ever. However, with new social cues to learn and stepping outside of his comfort zone, it proves a lot more difficult than he ever expected. And it doesn’t help when his loving yet overprotective family don’t know how to react to his new desire for independence. Will he be successful in finding love? Is this show incredibly stereotypical in how it portrays autism?

It had a good start in discussing Sam’s sensory issues, showing him stimming, and a special interest in Antarctica. There were definitely times I could relate and think “oh, that explains why I did that as a kid,” especially as someone who didn’t realize she was autistic until adulthood. But after a while I realized they lumped every single symptom onto him and take it to the extreme. That’s not to say there aren’t autistic people with extreme behaviors, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t exhibit some of this behavior when I was younger. But by throwing everything into just one character instead of spreading it out to multiple characters, it forgets that autism is a spectrum and no two cases are exactly alike. This is why it’s so bad that Sam is the only autistic character through the whole show, and it’s just another white guy who talks a lot about science; it’s a cliche character trope we’ve seen before, and it offers no variety for those on the spectrum.

Unfortunately, this show is not without its inaccuracies either. There’s a fine line between not understanding social cues and a complete lack of self-awareness or critical thought which borders on extreme gullibility. And the show decided to go with the latter to the extent where Sam often says and does horrible things and for some reason, no one takes the time to explain what he did wrong. Autism can explain his behaviors, but they’re not an excuse, especially when the person in question is eighteen and at that point should probably know better than to grab a girl’s ponytail or worse, ASK HIS THERAPIST TO BE HIS GIRLFRIEND (yes, that actually happens and it’s squicky beyond reason). With all the sexist, American Pie-esque dating tips he’s getting, this would have been a perfect opportunity to dismantle these unhealthy ideas of romance and properly explain to him the correct way to respect girls and boundaries and not be a total creep. But no, we have to have Sheldon Cooper 2.0 here who thinks sex is the end game for some semblance of normalcy (By God, can we kill this trope too? It’s absolutely repulsive).

But what’s even worse is that they play up all his mannerisms as a punchline. “Look at how weird and inappropriate his behavior is but he doesn’t get it!” This isn’t funny; it’s just uncomfortable and can be flat out embarrassing for the one at fault when they don’t understand why. If you know someone has problems in social cues, explain what they did wrong and how they can fix it. Don’t laugh at them. And for some reason, it also tries to play off his special interests as annoying and he shouldn’t talk about them if he wants someone to like him. Sam eventually gets a girlfriend who sets up a system where he can only talk about Antarctica three times a day. It’s not only unhealthy, it’s controlling and a giant red flag for a potentially abusive relationship. Isn’t the whole point of dating to get to know someone and their likes and dislikes? How can this girl love his honesty but not let him be true to himself? I love listening to people’s interests, even if it’s stuff I’m not into because there is no greater joy than seeing someone passionate about something they love. I like learning more about Antarctica and how he uses that information to explain his emotional states. It’s brilliant, but also confusing in how the rest of the show tries to make it seem like an obnoxious quality.

The biggest crime of the show is that Sam doesn’t seem like the main focus. Instead, we get way too many pointless scenes with side characters I don’t care about. I wanted to know more about Sam but his only character traits are limited to his mental disability. This really hit me when his younger sister, Casey, is offered a scholarship to go to a famous preparatory school which could be big for her future, but she’s hesitant because then Sam wouldn’t have anyone else to interact with at school and give him his lunch money. But wait, isn’t he a high school senior, meaning he’ll graduate by the spring? Is he going to live with his family for a while? Does he have any plans for college? Is he just going to work at Techtropolis for an indeterminate amount of time? Does he seriously have no other friends at school? How does he do in other subjects besides biology? Does he need to rely on someone for basic care for the rest of his life?

There was so much potential character development to explore, stuff that could be relatable for other teenagers on the spectrum struggling for independence or managing their symptoms, but instead of a compelling story of a character learning how to take care of himself, you’re just succumbed to about every dumb sitcom cliche in the book, leading to one of the most unhealthy families I’ve seen as of late on TV. The dad wants to connect with Sam but has a bunch of ambivalent feelings because of his autism (despite knowing him for 18 years??), and the mom, good fucking God, I’ve never hated a character as much as her.

I understand the protective parent trope is a thing in stories about mental illness, so the parent can learn to let their kid grow up. But this woman does nothing but bitch on and on about how great of a mother she is and how she’s sacrificed so much for her kids. One, isn’t that the whole fucking point of being a parent because you’re supposed to love your own kids? Two, you sure are doing a great job as a mother by babying your almost adult son and fighting with his therapist-- the one who is far more qualified on the subject of mental illness-- on what’s best for Sam. But go ahead and sleep with this random bartender just cause and not pay attention to your kids when they have serious life dilemmas and need someone for guidance. Good for you. All this does is make autism feel like a burden for others, and it’s incredibly selfish and inconsiderate to those who, y’know, have to live with their autism 24/7! If you can’t handle a loved one being mentally disabled, then stay the fuck away. They’re probably better off without your negativity.

It’s such a shame that a show with so much promise to be groundbreaking just fell into the trap of dumb sitcom tropes with confused themes, an awful cast of characters, and scenes you just don’t care about. I don’t care if Casey goes to this prep school, I don’t care about the therapist’s stupid ass boyfriend, and I most certainly don’t care about the Autism Moms who pat themselves on the back for not being shitty parents. Hell, instead of a support group for parents of autistic kids, why not have a group therapy for autistic kids?? How much more fascinating would it be to dive into a variety of kids on the spectrum connecting with each other and figuring out how to become independent and have a support network of people who understand each other in a way their parents probably wouldn’t? It can boost representation, you can see different interests and behaviors, and that would be way more fun to watch than just an awkward play date whenever a mom needs a hair cut.

But nope, this is what we got. It’s a major disappointment, and I’m kicking myself for giving Netflix the benefit of the doubt again. If you’re looking for good autistic representation, you won’t find it here. Just put on the new Power Rangers again.
