When you fall asleep on FaceTime with the hq boys (iwaizumi, Bokuto, Ushijima, Suna, Atsumu)
Tumblr media
masterlist
Tumblr media
Iwaizumi: “babe, what movie are we going to watch next since ponyo is about to finish?” iwaizumi asked you, but didn’t get any response “babe did you hear m- oh, you’re asleep.”
Iwa looked at the camera and smiled fondly, in the least creepiest way he thought you looked beautiful sleeping, angelic. He took a screenshot of the candid moment and ended the call saying “sleep well babe, goodnight.”
Tumblr media
Bokuto: it was around 4 am when you were having your FaceTime call, and Bokuto was rambling on about Disney conspiracy theories, which you usually loved to hear. But due to the late well early time of the call, you ended up falling asleep.
However, bokuto didn’t actually notice until you woke at 9 am and said “Bo, you’re still awake?” to which he replied “of course I was just about to talk about how moana was dead all along...”
“Bo go to sleep, love you” you said ending the call and going back to sleep.
Tumblr media
Ushijima: He never really liked the concept of FaceTime as he always said “we could just see each other in person,” but on the days when it’s raining or you didn’t have to time to see each other in the day you FaceTimed.
“Y/N today Tendou decided to make us all some chocolate it was very nice, I asked him to make you some for you to try” when you didn’t respond Ushijima thought you were ignoring him or didn’t hear him, until he heard so soft snores which made him realise that you were sleeping. He didn’t really know what the ‘protocol’ was for when someone falls asleep on FaceTime, so he stays on the call until he falls asleep.
Tumblr media
Suna: you and Suna FaceTime ALOT, so he isn’t foreign to when you fall asleep, doesn’t mean that he’s nice about it. Suna definitely likes to catch “slips” of you wether when you’re together at school or on a date, he always has his phone out ready to catch a photo of you doing something embarrassing.
He has many videos of you snoring and drooling on FaceTime, he’s even called added Atsumu and Osamu to the call so they can all enjoy your sleeping state. But tonight, after you and Suna watched an episode of rpdr he looks at your face on the camera and thinks ‘god she’s goregous, even when she’s sleeping’ and this time he doesn’t take any videos or pictures or add his friends to see you. He just lets you sleep whispering a soft ‘goodnight,’ ending the call.
Tumblr media
Atsumu: when you and Atsumu FaceTimed, it was always late at night as Atsumu claims ‘thats just the best hours for FaceTiming,’ however to prove him wrong you decided to pretend to fall asleep, to see what he would do and to disprove that FaceTiming late at night was better.
“Y/N, today in practice Aran and Suna were telling me that when girls get there periods their skin peels off is that true?” You didn’t respond, as you were trying to pretend that you were asleep. Atsumu looked at your ‘sleeping’ figure then said “PSST PSSST, Samu Samu!” trying to whisper.
“What do u want Tsumu?”
“What do you do when someone falls asleep on FaceTime?”
“Ha did Y/N finally get bored of you and you made her fall asleep.” Samu said laughing
This then triggered an argument between the twins, and you couldn’t withhold your laughter so you broke your ‘sleeping’ state alerting Tsumu who said “Y/N you’re awake great!”
“Yeah Tsumu, this is why we shouldn’t face time late at night since it makes me tir-“
“Anyways back to what I was saying, does your skin peel off when you’re on your period?” He asks interrupting you, you roll your eyes and indulge in his conversations until you both naturally fall asleep.

urs by NIKI - Oikawa Tooru x Reader
Playlist Series: Link
Urs by NIKI
Lyrics: “Trynna find where your head is, but I’m losing myself in the process
You’re bad for my health, all the good nights
Are they hidden goodbyes in disguise? I never know
You come see me only when I ask first
When you kiss me, do you wish it were her?
The best at being the worst
But fuck’s sake, I’m already yours.”
Warnings: Mentions of sex, language, angst, idk
Word Count:  3.2k

Saturday
Oikawa Tooru was beautiful. His hair was mussed from the relentless tugging you had just exposed it to, his face slightly flushed. It took all of your willpower to tear your gaze from his face when he turned back to look at you. You knew he’d be weirded out, you couldn’t stare at him like you were in love. That’s not what this was supposed to be.
He finished tugging on his shirt and held out a hand to you. No - not a hand. It was just your top. “Here,” he said, dropping it on your lap when you didn’t reach out fast enough. “I have to go to practice in an hour, and I wanted to grab something to eat first.” You pulled your shirt over your head at an agonizingly slow pace. He was kicking you out, of course he was. But you wanted to savor the moment, the sight of him slightly disheveled and the smell of him and the close proximity and- “Thanks for coming over though, (Y/N).” He gave you that smile - it was faked and forced but God, you loved his smile - before stepping away from the bed you were still seated on.
“No problem.” You stood, finally, and moved to pick up your bag and keys. “You don’t usually practice on the weekends. Do you have a game next week?” He shrugged, too consumed with sorting through his volleyball bag to pay any more attention to you.
“A couple practice matches, and a game on Friday.”
“Right.” He was done with you. “I’ll head out now. Have a good time at practice. Say ‘hi’ to Iwa for me?”
“Sure, sure.” He waved you goodbye - or maybe he was waving you away. Whichever, you shot him one last smile - not that he was looking at you to see it - and headed out.
It hadn’t always been like this between you two, at least not in private. You used to be friends, and you would talk and laugh and spend time together like any other pair of pals. Somewhere along the way, you both decided to try being friends with benefits. That’s what ruined it for you. Suddenly Oikawa was detached unless you were fucking, and you were so incredibly attached that it was embarrassing. No one noticed much of a change, because with your friends you were mostly still the bubbly, goofy pair that you had always been. But getting to see the Oikawa you loved when you were alone was limited to the times you were being intimate.
Sunday
It was an incredibly boring afternoon. You were already finished with all of your homework and wanted nothing more than to relax with a couple of friends. Unfortunately for you, most of your usual Sunday squad had already said they were busy. You were left with one option, one that wasn’t unwelcome but was awkward all the same. It had been ages since you and Oikawa had spent time together that wasn’t for, well, pleasure purposes, so you weren’t sure how the invite would go over, but you decided to give it a try despite that.
~Tooruuuu
There was no immediate response. Not even a semi-quick one, not like usual. Hmm. Maybe he hadn’t seen it? You decided to send another text, just in case.
~I’m bored
~Wanna have a movie day? I have snacks and Netflix :))
It was read immediately but was left unresponded to for about 5 minutes.
~busy today, sorry :(
~Oh, okay </3 Have fun!
~u too
Had he always been such a slow, dry texter? You sighed and tossed your phone aside. Guess it would be a solo movie night tonight.
Monday
Everyone was laughing, but you simply bit into your sandwich without glancing at the storyteller. Oikawa was retelling the story of how he met some girl Saturday night after practice. “She was beautiful, and I made a fool of myself!” he whined, while the surrounding third years jeered and laughed and teased. You weren’t in the mood for all that. You didn’t care that he got her number or that she was “the prettiest girl” he’s ever seen (and yes, that is a direct quote). You didn’t care that she was texting him right at that moment, or that she apparently went to Aoba Johsai with you guys. You especially didn’t care about how much fun they had yesterday at the park while you were alone in your room, or how she was smart and beautiful and perfect. You simply did not care in the slightest.
You felt a nudge in your ribs, and you glanced over to see Iwaizumi looking at you. “You good?” he asked quietly. How considerate of him, to quietly get in your business rather than let the whole table in on it. He didn’t know about the friends with benefits situation, why would he? So you sighed and shrugged, averting your attention back to your sandwich.
“Don’t really care about Tooru’s hot date, is all.” Luckily for you, Iwa didn’t press the matter. He let out a small hum, a minute sign of understanding, before turning back to the laughing group around you. He probably had some suspicions. Maybe you’d text him about it later, maybe call to explain your sour mood, but for now, you were happy to let it be. Now wasn’t the time to tell him about you and Oikawa’s arrangement.
Later that night, you sat alone in your room. You were bored and lonely and, despite all the qualms you held about it, you missed Oikawa dearly. It took only a couple of seconds to glance at your phone and realize practice was probably over, so you pushed aside your pride and opened up your messaging app.
~Hey
~Practice over? :)
And you waited. You waited and waited and waited until finally, 1 hour and 37 minutes later, you got a response.
~yeah
~what’s up?
~Wanna come over? Home alone and I’m bored ;p
It was almost ridiculous how quickly you texted back, especially since he took another 23 minutes to send his simple response.
~ok
~be over in 15
He took 26 minutes to get to your house, not 15, but at least he came. The time was spent as it usually was, with him peppering your skin with little kisses and him singing your praises while you melted like putty in his hands. It felt intimate and wonderful, but it also felt like only a moment, and you found yourself watching Oikawa pull on his clothes much too soon. You stayed planted on your bed, wanting nothing more than to curl up under your fluffy comforter with Oikawa by your side.
“Something wrong?” He was calling out to you from across the room, having noticed your frozen state. Of course he had noticed, he was one of the most perceptive people you knew. But you didn’t give in and only shook your head in response.
“No, just sleepy. You really know how to tire me out, huh?” You tried to smile and laugh, you tried to mask the lies. You knew he could see right through it, but he didn’t say anything else. Instead, he glanced down at his phone which had just given a little ‘beep.’ The corners of his lips twitched upwards as he tapped away at the screen. Immediately. “Who’s that?”
“You know the girl I met the other night? She invited me and the guys to this bakery she knows, as a late-night snack.” He was smiling fully now, completely occupied by the texts that were pouring in. Beep, beep, beep. It took a moment before he finally put it down and looked back at you. “I’m sure you can come too. If you want.”
“No, that’s okay. I’m tired, remember? I’m probably going to go to sleep.”
“Okay. Good, I’m gonna go then.” He tugged on his jacket and laced up his shoes. “Bye!”
“Goodnight,” you said weakly. Reluctantly.
“Yeah, goodnight.” It sounded so forced, but you didn’t bring it up. You simply curled under your blankets and waited until you heard your front door slam before falling asleep.
Tuesday
“Here.” Iwaizumi placed a small wrapped pastry in your outstretched hands. It was warm, like it had just been heated up, and it smelled lovely. It was early in the morning, just before classes were to start, and you hadn’t eaten yet. Iwaizumi was basically your savior.
“Thanks, Hajime.” You unwrapped the treat, eager to see what was inside. It was a small blueberry scone, which made you smile. “You didn’t bake, did you?” You faked disbelief, shaking your head with a laugh. “What if you poisoned it?”
“I got it from a bakery last night, idiot.” He tapped you on the shoulder, friendly and gentle, but hearing where he got it immediately caused a shift in your attitude.
“With Oikawa?” Iwaizumi was hesitant to answer, as he was hyperaware of the shift that had just occurred.
“...Yeah.” No longer in the mood to joke around, you simply lifted the treat to your lips and ate it in small nibbles. It was, unfortunately, delicious. You didn’t want to give this mysterious girl any credit but damn did she know a good bakery. “What’s going on with you two?” You shrugged, using the scone as an excuse to keep from speaking, but Iwa was too smart for his own good. He saw what you were doing and took back the pastry he had just gifted you. You gave him a small sigh.
“Nothing’s going on with us. Not really.” Iwaizumi was giving you a look that told you he didn’t believe you for 1 second. You sighed again, not wanting to crack, but having someone to talk to would be nice, wouldn’t it? “Honestly, Iwa? We fuck sometimes. But he’s so disconnected it hardly feels like anything more than a step backward.” Your friend gave no visible reaction to your confession. It was like he wasn’t surprised at all. But instead of teasing you or saying ‘I told you so’ he let you continue. “And now there’s that girl, you know, the ‘prettiest girl in the world’ or whatever. And I know it’s just a crush, but I don’t know, what if I’m losing him? I bet the whole time we were together last night he was thinking about her.”
“They just met.” He was trying to comfort you, in his own way. But it fell on deaf ears.
“Whatever. I have to get to class.” You gathered your items off the floor and headed off down the hall. “Thanks for the scone.”
Iwaizumi sent you a million (AKA two) texts that night after their practice match, trying to talk to you about the Oikawa situation. Unfortunately for him, you were too busy breaking your own heart (AKA having sex with Oikawa) to text back anything helpful. And, unfortunately for you, Oikawa received a call from his new girl crush in the middle of the act and had to cut it short.
“Sorry, (Y/N)!” he said, putting on his best puppy dog face, “She’s lost! I need to go rescue her!”
“Right.” You were frustrated, cold, empty without him. But he was already tugging on his shoes and dialing her number on his phone.
“I can’t leave a lady stranded!” he was saying, so proud of himself and happy that he could run off and rescue this mysterious maiden. You could almost laugh. He was leaving you naked and cold, he was stranding you to go find this girl who couldn’t even make her way around the city she lived in. He was on the phone with her by the time he was out the door, laughing and smiling and leaving you feeling almost sick. Maybe instead of a laugh, you would cry.
You pulled out your phone, finally needing the advice that Iwaizumi was itching to give you.
~Should I end this thing?
~What do you think?
~How helpful.
Wednesday
You were, once again, sitting at lunch and angrily munching on your meal while everyone around you laughed and enjoyed their time. The topic of conversation was, once again, Oikawa’s beautiful new girl friend. Not ‘girlfriend’ yet, but you were sure that’s where they were headed. How annoying.
Iwa sat beside you like usual, and he made sure to glance over in your direction every time Oikawa mentioned his crush. You’d think his concern was sweet, if it wasn’t for the fact that Oikawa quickly noticed that you were the subject of his friend’s constant looks and asked if you were alright. It took everything in you to not scream or hit Iwaizumi or lash out at Oikawa. Instead, after a deep breath, you plastered a smile on your face and turned to Oikawa.
“I’m fine,” you said, “Just tired.” Though you were sure it was obvious that you were lying - your fake smile wasn’t nearly as convincing as Oikawa’s - no one said a thing. Oikawa went back to his story - him and his girl had a movie night yesterday after he helped her get home, how cute - and you went back to stabbing your salad aggressively.
You were pulled aside following the meal. Iwaizumi stood, arms crossed and face stern, ready to tell you what you needed to hear (though, it definitely wasn’t going to be what you wanted to hear).
“I know that you like him,” he started.
“Love,” you corrected. He ignored you.
“But trust me when I say he’s not oblivious. And you’re not subtle.” You sighed, crossing your arms to match your friend’s stance.
“So? What am I supposed to do about it?”
“If you don’t want to lose him? Tell him the truth.” Iwaizumi walked off, leaving you alone with your thoughts.
You didn’t text Oikawa that night. He didn’t text you either.
Thursday
You laughed at lunch, but only because Oikawa was off doing who-knows-what with his little crush. They had a lunch date or something, who knows. He squeezed in time to see her whenever he could (or at least that’s what you gathered from his teammates). He was even inviting her to practice.
He never did that with you.
Friday
You weren’t sure what possessed you to attend the team’s game.
You never come to these things. It was loud and hot and you could hardly push your way past the crowd of Seijoh fans that were packed into the gym. Looks like everyone had the same idea as you and came early enough to see the team’s individual warm-ups.
Because the other team had yet to arrive and start their warm-ups you were able to slip down to the court fairly easily. You just wanted to say hi to your friends and wish them luck before the game started. You also had a little treat stuffed in your pocket: some of Oikawa’s favorite candy in a little good-luck baggie. Maybe if you could get him alone you would give him the gift and tell him what you’d been thinking about for the past week (in your head you imagined it would likely go something like ‘I’m in love with you, Tooru, and I want to be with you!’ Very dramatic and romantic).
After spotting Oikawa’s head peeking up over the crowd of players, you began to make your way in his direction. How lucky, he wasn’t even practicing yet. You were determined to catch him before he got into his game mode, but you were suddenly stopped by a firm hand on your arm. Iwa had caught your arm and held you in place, keeping you from your mission of finally confessing to Oikawa. You turned to glare at Iwa, to give him a piece of your mind, but he only shook his head at you.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to see To- uh, to support the team.” Smooth.
He dropped your arm and quickly - nervously?-  glanced over your shoulder before averting his gaze right back to you. Maybe he hadn’t meant for you to see, but you noticed anyway. You turned your head slightly, just in time to see most of the team had moved out of your line of sight to expose Oikawa and - no way.
He was bending down and kissing her, right there, for everyone to see. For you and Iwaizumi and the rival team and Oikawa’s fangirls and the entire crowd and everyone to see.
“Oh.” You turned back to Iwaizumi, whose expression was unreadable. “I, uh, I didn’t know they were actually, uh, dating.” You tried to laugh, like it was some kind of funny joke. “Didn’t they meet a week ago? This is kinda fast, huh?”
“(Y/N)...” Iwa looked like he wanted to say more, but there was a quick whistle ‘toot’ that called his attention. His team started to make their way to the court for the official warm-ups.
“Hey, don’t mind me. Go play!” You were smiling - God, how were you smiling? - and you shooed him off to the court. “Have a good game!” He looked torn but still shuffled over to join his team. You were ushered into the stands and ended up next to Oikawa’s crush. No, wait, girlfriend. How wonderful.
You stayed for the entire game. Maybe because you felt it would be a waste to go. Maybe because you wanted to support the team. Maybe because you didn’t know what else to do with yourself at that moment. Whichever the case, you suffered through the game for no reason. There was no one waiting for you when it ended. There was nothing to say.
Once you got home, it took everything in you to muster up the courage to shoot a simple text Oikawa’s way.
~I went to your game today! You played great :)
By now you were expecting a reply an hour later, if at all. So it came as a shock when a new text popped up on your phone not even 5 minutes later.
~I’m sorry, (Y/N), I think we should stop talking.
You turned off your phone.
Thursday
You and Oikawa were just friends again. Maybe that’s why things felt so normal between you two. You could laugh and talk and joke without having to worry about anyone finding out your secret. Unfortunately for you, being friends with Oikawa was what made you fall in love with him in the first place.
Lunch was different now. His girlfriend always sat with you, taking up the tiny spot that used to sit empty next to Oikawa. She was funny, you guess, but it ruined the flow of the conversations sometimes. It felt forced to you, she felt out of place. But maybe that was just your jealousy talking, because no one else acted like anything was different at all.
And maybe you were ridiculous, but you were still in love with him. Maybe it was easier to be in love when you didn’t have to pretend that you weren’t attached. Maybe it was easier to hide it when you didn’t have any alone time anymore. Were you happier this way? Who knows. You missed everything about him. You missed the way he touched you and the feeling of him against your skin. You missed his voice and you missed the way he held you. But you could accept it. It was better this way, right? Besides, he looked so happy with his new girlfriend. Who would want to ruin that?
But, fuck, you wished more than anything that you could get up in his face and tell him, “I’m yours.”

Playing Games
Pairing: Iwaizumi x Reader, mention of akaashi x reader
Request from @mel-melona: hi! I saw that you opened song requests and thought I’d drop one here if you’ve got time. So here’s the vibe, Playing Games by Anna of the North
wc: 1642
summary: A story in which you and iwaizumi break eachother’s hearts again and again.
Breaking your own heart. It was something Iwaizumi never considered. Throughout the years he’d thought heartbreak was at the hands of others. But, to an extent, he was right. As he scrolled his instagram a simple picture completely shattered his own heart. You had been seated on the lap of none other than ex fukurodani setter, Akaashi Keiji. What stood out even more was the way your hand extended to show the shiny diamond resting on your ring finger You were officially gone, and it was all his fault.
“Let's get married.” It was the first thing you’d ever said to him. You guys were 8 years old. The way You’d ran up to him at recess caught him off guard. The flowers held tight between your fingers couldn't have been for him. The dirt staining your outfit was an indication that you’d just picked the flowers. “No.” It was the first thing he ever said to you. The way your eyes filled with tears made the young boy uncomfortable. However, before he could apologize, or cry because you were crying a voice interrupted. “Iwa-chan, you made them cry.” That was how you wound your way into Iwaizumi’s life, and the first time he broke your heart.
----
The sun had started to set when the three of you started to make your way home. You stayed after school to watch the practice of Kitagawa Daiichi’s boys volleyball team. Your friends had made the team with ease years ago and as the three of you were almost with junior high you took every chance you could to see your boys play. “You didn’t have to wait on us you know.” You only shrugged. “I like watching you play Iwa. You're really cool” Had the golden hour sun not been illuminating you guys, you might’ve noticed the redness that crept up his ears. “Aren’t I cool too (Y/N),” your third party exclaimed. “You’d be cool if you stopped overworking yourself shittykawa.” You couldn’t help but laugh at the scold, and it was the first time Iwaizumi noticed how amazing the sound was.
“Besides, I’m gonna really miss you guys.” The words came out quietly, both boys brows furrowing with confusion. “I thought you were applying to Aboa Johsai too.” Iwaizumi covered the frantic tone with a cough. He remembered how he blamed it on dirt flying into his mouth. Even at 14, it seemed weird but you let it pass. The reality of what you were able to tell your best friends settling in. “I’m moving to Tokyo after this year ends. I’ll be going to Fukurodani Academy.” That was the first time you broke Iwaizumi’s heart.
----
He promised. He promised he’d only be a phone call away, and that nothing would change. You would talk or text everyday and it would be like nothing changed. The tears that drowned your pillowcase currently made you feel like otherwise. It was halfway through 1st year and not only was it harder to make friends in Tokyo, but you couldn't even turn to your best friend/ After All, he was the reason for the tears. The summer before you left you and Iwaizumi found yourself in your first relationships with one another. Shortly after you admitted that you would be moving after your last year, Iwaizumi admitted to having a crush on you. The awkward conversation consisted of him telling you that he thinks that he likes you. “Or I just really like your laugh and your smile, and jokes.”
The two of you ended junior high and went into your first years of high school despite living in two different places. The promise of taking the train every weekend to see one another sounded good in the head of two early teens who were still in the honeymoon stage. However, the distance wore and as Iwaizumi and Oikawa began getting more and more involved with one volleyball there was no time for you. “Someone at school confessed to me today. I don’t know how I feel.” The admission not only led to a breakup, but the second time Iwaizumi broke your heart.
----
“Shhhh your parents are home,” you laughed against his lips. You were met with the hands on your hips sliding upwards and fingers beginning to move rapidly along the skin of your waist. The legs you had tangled with his began to twitch and you had to slap your hand over your mouth to keep from laughing loudly at the way Iwaizumi’s hands tickled you. The two of you had made up shortly after your “‘breakup”. If you could even call it a relationship given how young you were. Now halfway through your third year, you tended to travel to Miyagi twice a month to see your childhood friends. You always told your parents that you were staying at your cousin’s for the weekend, however would always sneak out with their help. You tended to find yourself sharing whispered jokes and soft kisses with your first love.
“Are you sure you have to go back tomorrow,” The groan vibrated against your neck from where Iwaizumi had his lips rested. “We can always just skip school and stay like this.”  Your hands lightly thread through the soft strands. “Our parents would absolutely kill us. Besides I promised I’d help Akaashi, with some science problems tomorrow.” You didn’t notice it but something kin to jealousy flickered through his eyes. It was lightning fast, and he composed himself even faster. The two of you weren’t dating by any means, the distance not being worth it. Those were his words not yours. However, he didn’t know you were that close to the setter. “Is that the setter?” Iwaizumi knew the answer. Afterall, you helped with the volleyball on occasion, and could be seen hanging out with them on snapchat sometimes. Your nod of confirmation only prompted home to continue. “I didn’t know you two were that close.”
“I’ve gotten close with everyone on the team.” He doesn’t miss the way you stress the word and has to force himself not to sound like a jealous asshole. “Besides, he has the same teacher I had last year and I still have those notes.” The warmth on his body fades as you sit up, eyeing him silently. “You know, you two resemble each other. Dark haired, pretty eyed. Handsome. Maybe I do have a type.” The last words come out as a tease. However, at the slightest indication of you being interested in Akaashi, you broke Iwaizumi’s heart for the second time.
----
Iwaizumi remembered how you cried when he told you that he was going to college in California. Your puffy eyes and reddened face made his heart ache, however he still found you to be the most beautiful person in the world. The night before he left he gave you a necklace. Just a simple silver chain that had been his, but he rarely wore. He told you it was to remember him by and for you to still feel close to him. The two of you promised to keep in contact, an unspoken promise to pick things up one day.
However, that never happened. You’d visited him once down in California and he took you to a few parties, at which he ended up ditching you halfway through the night. It wasn’t intentional, but his new life without you just seemed more appealing. The crack in our heart so tiny it was practically unnoticeable. The following days he’d apologize, with  a gentle caress along your jaw and a sweet kiss to match. Still the two of you had no title. When you returned back home, you’d two worked out a time schedule in which you two would talk. Slowly his calls became less frequent and you found out he’d be out living his new life. Your face time Netflix party dates with Iwaizumi eventually dissipated. As the cracks in your heart continued to grow, you began to find solstice in your old friend Akaashi. However, whenever you seemed to start moving on in your own life, your first love found his way back into your life.
A simple text checking in to tell you that he missed you. To a random call while it was 3 am for him, because he wanted to hear your voice. And then he got too busy again. Too busy to confirm that he was out safe, or to remind you how much he cared. Each time the once tiny crack grew bigger and bigger. Although it was unintentional, his arrival and departure served as a silent reminder to not move on. Too keep waiting on someone who just wasn’t willing to keep you. At least not in the moment.
Eventually texts turned into once a month, and then once every few months, and then only on holidays and birthdays. However, Iwaizumi would miss the subtle mentions of Akaashi and the way the relationship began to blossom. He’d waved it off as the two of you just being friends as his chance slowly diminished.
----
As Iwaizumi read the caption, he’d found out the two of you had been dating for the last 3 and a half years. You looked so happy. The two of you are 25 now, and he had every intention of returning back home for a while, hoping to reconnect with old friends, including you. As he observed the picture, he picked up a tiny detail that anyone else would have bypassed. Zooming in, he noticed you still wore the silver chain of his. His heart briefly raced, but another look at the way your eyes shined brighter than all the stars in the sky said it all. He had lost you. Maybe not as a friend, but as a lover. For the last time you broke Iwaizumi’s heart.

You weren't able to return back to school just yet. Today though, you wanted to meet up with Oikawa. It was your only chance other than Maiya to remember your friends. You waited patiently at the gate, twiddling your thumbs.
Iwaizumi was clueless of his friend's plot. Usually, after class, Oikawa would meet Iwa in the yard. Instead, he sped past his friend. "Sorry Iwa-chan, I don't want to be late for my date!" He rushed.
"Date, my ass," Iwaizumi grumbled. Behind approached his other friends, including Maiya. "Hey, guys."
"Do you wanna join us to get noodles Iwa?" Makki asked.
"What's the occasion?" He asks.
"Chiba's upset about Y/n, we just want to cheer her up," Mattsun says.
"Sure, Shittykawa has a 'date' according to him," Iwaizumi gestured with his hands. "Let's go."
Oikawa meets you before his friends make it out to the gate. You had pulled out your notebook and scribbled more notes on the pages. He glances over to see you writing the time school ends and what the uniform looks like. "Hey, Y/n-chan!" He greets. You jump slightly and wave at him. "Did you wait long?"
"Kind of?" You check your phone for the time. "I got here an hour ago. Are you ready to go?"
"An hour!? Y/n you're going to get sick, why'd you come so early?" The two of you chatted about the school on your way to your house. You asked about classes, teachers, and how involved you were in class.
Once inside your house, you watch as your parents greet Oikawa by his first name. He makes small talk with them before he follows you into your room. You seat yourself on the bed while Oikawa sits at your desk. He notices the empty spots on your wall where your photos with Iwaizumi were. "So what do you want to know?"
"Tell me who my friends are," You ask. "I know about Chiba but I don't know anyone else."
"Oh well-" Oikawa points out a photo from your second year at Seijoh. "That's me, Iwa-chan, Makki, Mattsun, and Chiba."
"Iwa, he was with you last time right?" You ask. "I have notes with his name on them." Oikawa watched as you got up and pulled notes out from your bedside table.
Oikawa examined his friend's messy writing and an idea popped into his head. "You know, Iwaizumi and you were really close," He says.
"Really? Can you tell me about him?" You tilted your head.
"Definitely," Oikawa smiled. "What do you want to know?"
"Just tell me about any important memories with him,"  You grabbed a pillow as you seated yourself. Hugging the pillow in your front, you patiently waited for Oikawa to think of a memory.
"Oh, I got one! It's about when we all went to the New Year's light festival last year," He smiled.
You drove your dad's van to pick up Iwaizumi and the rest of the group. This was the year Maiya started to like Matsukawa. You hummed the tune to Iwa and your song as you arrived at Oikawa's house. Iwaizumi seats himself in the front as Oikawa happily sat behind you. "Hi babe," Iwa leaned over and kissed your cheek.
"Aww, Iwa-chan where's my kiss?" Oikawa pouted.
"Back off Shittykawa," You growled.
Three stops later, you gathered the group to go to the light festival in Sendai. It was a cold night, thankfully Iwaizumi held you close to keep you warm. He even gave you his jacket to wear over yours when he caught you shivering.
"Here are photos from the festival," Oikawa showed you his phone album. You grabbed the phone to examine the pictures. "This one is you and Iwa-chan."
"Oh my god! Babe, can we take a picture here?" You pointed at the flower arch with pink lights. "Tooru, take our picture."
You dragged Iwaizumi to the arch, smiling with glee. Iwa stood behind you wrapping his arms around your shoulders. You looked up at him and pursed your lips. He leaned down and planted a light kiss on your lips.
"I love you," He whispered pulling away. Instantaneously your cheeks flushed red and you hid your face in your scarf. You turn to face him properly and you cupped his cheeks. "Gah! Your hands are cold, let go, babe!"
"That's the first time you said I love you," You whispered.
"Don't be soft about it when it's true," Iwa blushed. "Hey! Stop taking photos now, Stupidkawa!"
You moved your hands away from his cheeks down to his shoulders. You leaned up and placed your lips on his. "I love you too, Haji," You whispered.
"Hey what happened here?" You showed a photo of Matsun holding Maiya back from Oikawa.
"Get over here you little shit!" Maiya growled.
"Chiba I said I'm sorry! Makki protect me- Y/n why are you taking photos of this!?" Oikawa yelled.
"You ate her food, I'm just taking photos to remind you to never do that," You chuckled. You flipped the camera on Oikawa's phone to take pictures with Iwaizumi. "Baby smile."
"Hey! Stop taking pictures on my phone!" Oikawa goes to grab his phone.
"Oh, I locked your phone. Here," You say. "It seems like Iwaizumi and I were really close. Were we best friends or something?"
"Something like that," Oikawa stated. The rest of the night, Oikawa began to tell you stories of you and your friend group. Unfortunately, none of it recalled any memories within your mind. Though all the stories he told of you and Iwaizumi made you feel something fuzzy inside. The way he spoke greatly of Iwaizumi made you believe that everything was fine between you two.
But it wasn't. Iwaizumi on the other hand had just finished going out with the group. As Makki and Mattsun finished their meal, Maiya excused herself to calm down outside. Ever since your accident, she's tried every day for you to remember your friendship. The thought of being an erased memory shook her and it would cause her to breakdown easily.
Maiya stood outside the restaurant, breathing heavily. Her eyes welled up with tears as the memories of you filled her mind. "Chiba, you okay?" Iwaizumi called out. Maiya refused to look up at him. "Matsukawa was worried but he wanted me to check on you. Is everything alright?"
"We were together that night," She muttered. "She was crying and I didn't stop her from leaving...Y/n was right there, beside me and I- I let her go. I told her to drive safe- I told her everything would've been fine...I-" Hot tears began to stream down her face as she crouched to her knees.
"Chiba, it'll be okay. The good part is Y/n is alive, and according to the doctor amnesia won't be forever," Iwa bent down to comfort her.
"But it might. You don't understand Iwaizumi," Maiya cried. She looked up and grabbed his collar. "You're the one who wanted her out of your life. I didn't ask for this!"

wrong numbers/right answers
Tumblr media
iwaizumi hajime/reader wc: 3.9k
When Hajime had started catching feelings for the mystery number, he'd rationalised that it could never be you. Slowly but surely, his mystery texter had been getting him out the slump Iwaizumi had been feeling over his unrequited feelings, and instead of wondering about you, he was wondering when the next mystery number text would come.
But now you're her and she's you and his brain is going to explode. He doesn't have enough brain cells for this.
Curse this stupid, stinking crush.
Tumblr media
“You've been on that damn phone for, what, 30 minutes now?” Iwaizumi growls, waving Oikawa's less than impressive test score across said boy’s face. “What are you, texting a new girlfriend?”
“Iwa-chan, I'm flattered you think I have a new girlfriend!” Oikawa’s ecstatic, typing with one hand and snatching away the sheet away with the other. “But no, I'm just trying to have a good time with our favorite classmate,” Oikawa metaphorically dangles you in front of him, and smirks as his friend’s eyes widen. “Oho, I’ve got your attention now, have I?”
Iwaizumi wrinkles his nose, trying to get the test back. “Shut up, shittykawa. If I knew her better, I'd apologize to her because she has to deal with the likes of you.”
The spiker makes a wild lunge for the test paper, because they came to his house to study, not so his disgraceful excuse of a best friend could tease him about a girl, but Oikawa leans just out of reach, his long arms stretching as far as they could.
“You wound me, Iwa-chan.” Oikawa chuckles, shuffling the paper under the cushion he was sitting on. “My test score wasn’t that bad, anyways-“
“You call a 52% a good grade?!”
“Well, it's a pass, isn’t it? I have more important things on my mind, anyways, like beating Ushiwaka, texting my favorite girl in class, don’t you have something to do? Oh, wait! I forgot that you were-”
“Shittykawa," Iwaizumi cuts in, a seething expression on his face, but Oikawa pays no mind. "If you finish that sentence-“
“-Socially awkward! You can’t even talk to her without blushing! But funny how that doesn’t happen when you talk to anyone else like that, hmm, Iwa-chan?”
Hajime gets up and launches himself across the chabudai, tackling Oikawa, a fist raised.
__
It’s 8am when Iwaizumi gets a text.
From: ??? To: You rinrin this is you right!?? buddy???!! pls send me ur jpnese lit hw I NEED HELP otherwise tatsuya-sensei will have me impaled bro my entrails will be sacrificed to whoever the hell Yamada Kai was, helpppp!
There’s a string of different crying emojis after that, which Iwaizumi finds adorable. He doesn’t know who this is, but it’s obvious that the poor guy went to Aoba Johsai. The woman who taught Japanese Literature was famous around the school for being a harsh marker and a harsher teacher style. They’d been studying Yamada’s works so far, and Iwaizumi expects whoever sent it was panicking- it was 8, school started 8:30, and English was their second lesson of the day (or it was for tomorrow, because Classes 3-4 didn’t have Literature today, but Iwaizumi assumes it’s today, otherwise they wouldn’t be this distraught.)
He glances at his watch- he had a few minutes to spare. He fishes his work out his bag, and he thanks God he's used his best handwriting (Tatsuya-sensei had caused quite the scene photocopying his work last time, showing off to the entire Class-2 how “insufferably illegible” his print was,) hoping whoever was behind the screen could read it. He takes a quick picture of it, making sure it’s not blurry and the script is clear before sending it off and hurrying out of his house.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You [sent: IMG20151219] you’ve got the wrong number but i’m from seijou too. this is the worksheet you mean?
From: Crying Emoji lmao To: You aaa i’m so sorry for sending it to the wrong number!
but yes, it is the right one! thank you so much, i owe you one, mystery man!
Oikawa’s waiting for him outside as always, and Iwaizumi deliberately speeds up so he can walk past. Behind him, Oikawa makes a sort of whine from the back of his throat, quickening his pace to fall in next to him.
“What’s gotten you so cheery?” Oikawa asks, and Iwaizumi realizes he’s been smiling. He replaces it with a scowl, quickly shoving his phone in his pocket so Oikawa can’t get anymore curious.
“It’s no thanks to you.” Iwaizumi quips, and Oikawa pouts.
Iwaizumi only risks a reply when he gets to school, because Oikawa Tooru will never shut up if he sees him texting someone that is so obviously a girl.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You how do you know it's a guy..? for all you know i could be a girl, you know.
He gets a reply soon after.
From: Crying Emoji lmao To: You well, if you are a girl, i'm sorry!! i didn't mean anything  by it... also i kinda assumed you were a guy because of your handwriting.
He should be offended by that, right? Right. He’s offended by it. He's about to defend himself when his phone buzzes with another message.
From: Crying Emoji lmao To: You SHIT I'M SO SORRY THAT WAS RUDE TO SAY!! I BET YOU WON'T TALK TO ME ANYMORE
IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE IF YOU DO...
He blinks, an ungraciously amused smile making it's way onto his face. He leaves his phone alone for the school day, because his teacher has just walked in. He figured he'd reply to you after school, just before volleyball.
It's kind of a mistake, because he comes back to 12 more messages, each message reading a variant of "I'm sorry," the amount of sincerity in each message growing as the hours passed by. He figures it's time to ease the stranger out her misery, and begins typing his reply.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You no need to get worked up on it, lmao   you planned on talking to me again?
While waiting, he has enough time to go to the clubroom early and change out of his school uniform to his jersey. He's halfway through fixing one half of his laces when his phone pings.
From: Crying Emoji lmao To: You it's because i thought i owed you one.... but i guess if you don't want to talk it's okay lol
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You i hope it's not me that offended you this time. i do want to talk. you seem... cool?
He hits the send button, rereads it, and recoils. That sounds awkward.
Iwaizumi starts typing more.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You besides, you don't know me. how are you gonna give back (whatever. i don't know how! you're the  one that wants to owe me.) if you don't even know me?
From: Crying Emoji lmao To: You won't it be funner if it's a mystery?
i guess... we could help each other out! anytime we need hw help we just call each other, like a private help line.
(also, why the question mark? of course i'm cool!)
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You i think that sounded less creepy in your head.
(sure, you're cool. [heavy sarcasm, if you can't tell.])
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao
is that a no?
(rude!)
Iwaizumi stares at the screen. Well, he didn't really mind. And whoever this was sounded pretty trustworthy, and not a random creep that pretended to be a Seijou student in their free time. His time to deliberate is cut short, because Oikawa slams the clubroom doors open, singing a Christmas carol Iwaizumi didn't recognise, along with Hanamaki and Matsukawa, who were discussing what kind of forfeit Oikawa had to pay today if he didn't set as well as he should; ramen or oden?
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You fuck why not
i'll be looking forward to... being helped out? bye.. i'll talk later.
my best friend is here and i'm not ready for him to annoy me straight to satan's asscrack.
Iwaizumi whips the phone away from Oikawa's line of vision, only letting him see his asscrack remark. (It backfired, because Oikawa spends all of the time from putting his shoes on to the start of practice whinging.) The boys slowly file out of the clubroom, Kunimi shutting off the lights as the door softly clicks closed.
Iwaizumi's phone lights up in his blazer pocket, a simple "see you later!" on the screen that brightens the whole room up.
___
It's two weeks later when Iwaizumi needs the help he's been promised. He opens up his chat- they'd just been talking last night about Seijou's annual fair, and what they each were going to do.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You hey english is kicking my ass
can you help a me out please
To: You From Crying Emoji lmao ofc !! what do you need help with
i would let u copy my answers but i feel like you actually have to learn english at some point phone-chan lol
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You the english were on crack when they

does the sentence "the star shine brightly" work
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao

you also forgot the "d" at the end lol
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You that one is on me that's simple

To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You :)
To: You From Crying Emoji lmao the things i do for you, phone chan!
___
"Iwa-chan, don't eat too much." Oikawa says, blinking as he tries to process the sheer amount of beancurd his friend is wolfing down.
"Says the person who hogged all the milk bread once." Iwaizumi retorts, rolling his eyes. "This is one plate of tofu, unlike when you once wasted 2000 yen to buy the school's entire daily stock of milk bread so you could eat it." He pauses to finish another cube of his favourite food. "And school milk bread doesn't even taste that great."
"It was cheap, Iwa-chan!" Oikawa tries to defend himself. "Makki, Matssun, help me out here!"
Matsukawa only shrugs, and when prompted by Oikawa to give a 'real' answer, he sides with Iwaizumi, apologizing sheepishly.
"Sorry to admit it Captain," He chuckles, "But I don't really like school food anyways."
Iwaizumi shoots Oikawa a teasing smirk, and Oikawa's just about to say something when Hanamaki pipes up.
"I like it," Makki makes a non-committal gesture, and Oikawa looks happy with that. "I mean, sure, school food isn't that great but I think the milk bread is the only good thing about it."
"Like striking gold in a coalmine!" Oikawa nods his approval, and Iwaizumi just sighs. Looking around, he spots you out of the corner of his eye, looking as good as usual and serving a few parents and students. He knows he can't call you because he'd end up sweating through his blazer, so he asks another classmate instead.
"Okuhara-kun," He calls, waving to a boy in his class. "Do you know who made the tofu?"
The boy shakes his head. "Whoever it was came early to drop it off. It had a note with it though."
This gets Iwaizumi's attention. She'd left something for him? "Oh? What did it say?"
"Uh- this is an exact quote, by the way- 'Phone-chan, don't you dare!'" Okuhara replies, drawing out quotation marks in the air. When Iwaizumi lets out a loud laugh, he takes it for disbelief.
"Is it... really that funny?" He questions, looking bemused.
Hajime grins. "Not really."
____
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You you didn't even drop any hints!
all you gave me was a note that told me to go away
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao i knew you'd go looking, phone-chan! my intuition is as good as ever!
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You unfair. that was like, my best friend's level of unfair.
so unfair that i'm thinking about moving my best friend back to the top of my favourites list :/
That was a bold faced lie. Oikawa had never been on the top of his favourites list: that was reserved solely for Makki.
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao you wound me!
who is this best friend?
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You
not telling lol
you'd know who i was then
To: You
From: Crying Emoji lmao spare hint ma’am?
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You you didn't give me any!
and you're the one who wanted to keep it a secret in the first place :/
...but fine.
he's on the volleyball team
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao oikawa!!??
To: Crying Emoji lmao
From: You ... :( yeah
see i told you!
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao actually, i don't know the vb team that well. oikawa's one of the only guys i know  because he's popular. and loud
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You oh so i’m not popular?
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao aww phone-chan it’s not like that <3 ur popular in my heart :)
Iwaizumi curses at the blush that follows reading that. He will not allow himself to get flustered over that, it was a joke!
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You gee thanks
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao besides i still know the third years! i'm just saying i don't know them that well!!
hanamaki, matsukawa and iwaizumi. they're a close friend group, so i expect one of then is you
When he reads his name, he doesn't know whether to deny it completely, or confirm that it's him. Hajime puts his phone down and paces for a bit, wondering if he's fucked up. When he checks his phone again, chewing on his lip, he guffaws at the message they've left.
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao ...judging from how you're not replying, you are.
but since i don't know which one, i'll decide on calling you phone-chan, yeah?
When Iwaizumi met whoever they were, he was gonna give them a lecture of a lifetime about not being a smartass.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You fine, yeah. i am one of them. but now you owe me a hint too!
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao
well, i suppose i do!
i'm one of the girls in the class that actually has oikawa's number. he half forced me to give it to him, actually, but it's still been fun talking with him.
(not as much as talking with you, phone-chan!)
and i also totally get why he's annoying.
Iwaizumi feels a tiny bit of jealously bubbling up- irrational, because he's only been texting them for about half a month. His friend's statement about liking talking with him more than Oikawa makes him a little pleased, because people didn't usually pick his pretty best friend over him (selfish, yeah, but he's tired of girls asking him to deliver chocolates to the setter and befriending him in hopes of getting closer to Tooru.)
But girls who had his number? Only the ones Oikawa actually had an interest in.
The grand total of the people in his class with the brunet's number was three, because as courteous and as flirtatiously he acts, he accepts and turns down people normally, and doesn't like hurting girls as much as his playboy rep boasts (Iwaizumi's always liked that about him.) The three girls he knew of consisted of Aoi, his ex, Reina, who unbeknownst to Oikawa at the time, swang the other way, and...
You.
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao i know that aoi, reina and (name) has his number...
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao well, one of them is certainly me!
we're both down to three, phone-chan. even ground!
Iwaizumi feels the world cave in on himself, reading the message over and over. Aoi was a nice guy, but he was also the same brand of pompous that Hajime disliked and Oikawa had found cute. They’d ended it horribly, so Hajime was decidedly not looking forward to the possible outcome that it was him, so he casts away the thought before it can solidify in his mind’s eye. Reina didn’t even like guys, so if you were you…
Huh. His mouth’s gone dry suddenly.
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You cool cool
hey i'm gonna head to bed i gotta emotionally prepare for voluntarily walking into japanese lit class with tatsuya sensei on my ass
sorry to cut it short
To: You From: Crying Emoji lmao aw don't worry about it phone-chan <3
good night! and see you tmrw, whether we know it or not!!
To: Crying Emoji lmao From: You sleep well
Iwaizumi curses during the 5th hour of trying to sleep. Curse this stupid, stinking crush.
___
He wishes he hadn't asked. He's fine with his favorite crying emoji user knowing who he is, but knowing that it's you sort of struck a pang in his heart that couldn't be undone. He can't concentrate in class, and though he fights it because Oikawa's caught on to this habit, he finds himself staring at you instead of listening to the teacher. The whole situation was annoying!
First he thinks you're cute but he'd chalked it up to never working out because Oikawa had managed to snag your number. Then Oikawa assures him that it's platonic and they only talk about school work which is, to say the least, bullshit, because Oikawa can't actually text without getting distracted. His best friend has a tendency to rant about volleyball or start gossiping when his phone is within reach, and it's why his study sessions happen with Hajime next to him (and even with him, Oikawa still manages to get his grubby hands on his phone.) His best friend was absolutely up to something, and it had been killing Iwaizumi that he didn't know what it was.
And then he'd gotten that cute, fated, statistically impossible text from a wrong number, and fallen into a cute flirting-but-not-really routine. They were kind, sweet, and willing to help him with trivial things like homework and make him his favorite food.
It was easier not really knowing who it was! That was mean to admit, sure, but even when Hajime had started catching feelings for the mystery number, he'd rationalised that it could never be you. Slowly but surely, his mystery texter had been getting him out the slump he had been feeling over his unrequited feelings, and instead of wondering about you, he was wondering when the next mystery number text would come.
But now you're her and she's you and his brain is going to explode. He doesn't have enough brain cells for this.
Hajime sighs, looking away from you and back to his worksheet. Algebra stares back at him with no mercy. "I have no brain cells." He mutters, amending his thoughts. In the seat next to him, Oikawa chuckles lightly.
"You've got enough to stare at her, though." He whispers, and Hajime feels his blood boiling. "I swear, when the bell rings, I'm going to-"
The teacher clears her throat loudly. "Iwaizumi-san, if you could refrain from speaking until I've finished..."
Iwaizumi feels his hot rage flood into his cheeks as embarrassment instead. "Of course, sorry sensei."
You catch his eye as he averts his eyes from the teacher, and you smile encouragingly. Hajime thinks the knot in his forehead gets worse. He feels himself go hotter, somehow, and quickly goes back to looking at his math equations. Oikawa's still fucking smirking.
"Denial, Iwa-chan."
There's something fishy in the way that Oikawa texted the group chat about getting lunch. Firstly, Oikawa liked western food for whatever reason, and whenever he asked to go out, he would picked a pricey French place. The rest of the team would debate for about 8 minutes before usually settling on a cheap soba place near the town centre. He'd claimed it was for a post-midterms celebration, and since the Christmas holidays had started, they might as well go somewhere altogether, as a team.
But Oikawa's suggested this expensive ramen place (which... alright, it's not like Oikawa never eats Japanese. But he doesn't prefer it, and Hajime is paranoid about whatever plan his best friend has hatched) and instead of shouting at him to lower the price, Makki and Mattsun agree immediately. Iwaizumi knows Makki is broke this week, after having to buy a replacement volleyball for the one they popped while roughhousing, so he doesn't understand why he'd agree to blowing 2000 yen on a single bowl of ramen.
The rest of the third years decline or agree. Iwaizumi thinks this is for plausible deniability, to make him think it's all alright. But when Oikawa @'s him in chat to confirm for the coming Thursday, he grudgingly agrees. He's wanted to try that ramen place for a while, anyway, and he's putting too much thought into this. It was just lunch with the team. It's fine.
Then the coming Thursday rolls around, and he's been standing outside the ramen place for 5 minutes and no-one is here and he's going to kill Oikawa-
To: [crying baby noises] From: You oikawa i swear to god where the fuck is everyone. i'm going to aim every spike in practice to you i swear. yahaba would help me
To: You From: [crying baby noises] WAHAHAHA it's okay iwa-chan, someone else you like much better than our sweaty volleyball team is coming ☆⌒(ゝ。∂)
To: [crying baby noises] From: You die in a ditch
To: You From: [crying baby noises] you won't be saying that after ur first date! (☆ω☆)
here's her number, since ur gonna need it!
[CRYING BABY NOISES] HAS SENT YOU A CONTACT
Iwaizumi grumbles the entire time he's punching in the number, intending to tell you that you've been set up and you don't need to bother coming, but his phone shows up with an error that he's already got the number saved. He stares at the notification, blinking once, twice, before the elation sets in and-
"Ah, Iwaizumi?" You call his name, walking quickly towards him and giving him a bashful smile. "Sorry I'm late. I wasn't worried because I thought it was just going to be Oikawa talking my ear off, but he texted me to say... well."
He just says your name, blushing but still grinning. You chuckle, and the little display of happiness pushes him to at least try and say something, "Oikawa gave me your number, but..." Iwaizumi trails off.
"He sent yours too." You explain, pulling your phone out and, at last, he's given proof that you're the mystery number and his grin manages to get wider. The cool winter air bites less than it did before. "But I already had it saved."
"Me too." Hajime says, taking a step closer to you and taking a hand tentatively. Your fingers slip between his, and your cheeks are pink from more than just the cold.
"I had a feeling it was you." You admit, still looking at him the way you do in his dreams. "It's nice to finally meet you properly, Phone-chan."

Hey! I hope this isn’t too much, I’m sorry. But it was fun to write! Darian hopes to make a scenario from one of these someday hm 🤔We hope you enjoy! also we love u so much too our heart hurts
OIKAWA TŌRU
“If you haven’t met your soulmate yet, but end up in the same area on a certain day, that day will repeat itself until you meet each other.”
Oikawa was on his way to school that morning when he noticed that something about the day was off
It wasn’t that something was different about today, no, it was that everything was so much the same
The fact that his usual train was cancelled so he had to a different route to school, the little kids passing by singing their nursery songs together, the flower seller dropping their gardening tools, the vendor selling tissues, the middle-aged ladies running into the supermarket for the 2-hour sale, and bumping into Iwaizumi on the way
“Iwa-chan! Today’s so strange!”
“Oikawa?? What are you doing here?”
“Why are you so surprised, Iwa-chan? I was here yesterday!”
Iwaizumi furrows his eyebrows
“What are you talking about?”
“I came by this route yesterday too, but anyway, that’s besides the point, everything today feels just the same as—“
Before Oikawa finishes, he grabs his phone from his pocket and checks the date
His phone showed the date of yesterday
“Iwa-chan! What day is it today?”
Iwaizumi tells him the date corresponding to his phone and Oikawa claps his hands together
“Yesterday has repeated itself!”
Iwaizumi’s eyes widen at Oikawa, a hint of seriousness in his expression
“The aliens are finally coming to get me!”
“No, Shittykawa!”
Iwaizumi immediately clobbers Oikawa
“Ow! What was that for?”
“You don’t understand what it means when a day repeats itself, do you?”
Iwaizumi then explains to Oikawa about how people meet their soulmate as they proceeded to go to school
“I thought this was common knowledge, but then again, you’re Oikawa.”
“Hey! I’m sorry I pay more attention to volleyball than love!”
“That has got to be a joke!”
“Mean, Iwa-chan, mean!”
Oikawa and Iwaizumi then had a little wrestle, but they end up bumping into someone
Iwaizumi immediately apologizes and the person accepts it and walks away
Oikawa then taunts Iwaizumi
“Look what you’ve done!”
“Me??”
For the rest of the day, Oikawa ponders on the fact that he’s going to meet his soulmate
“So how does this loop end?”
“You meet your soulmate, or that’s what they say, at least.”
“And how do I know they’re my soulmate?”
“You just know. I don’t know, as if I’ve ever gone through it before, Crappykawa.”
A “week” passes, and Oikawa is still repeating the same day
He has already started memorizing the day
The trains, the kids, the flower seller, the tissue vendor, the middle-aged ladies, then Iwaizumi
But still no sign of this loop ending
Oikawa was starting to lose hope that he would ever find his soulmate
The children run past him, singing the same old nursery rhyme, and Oikawa scratches his head in frustration
“But they’re supposed to be here! How could I have kept missing them?!”
Just then, he hears the oh-so-familiar sound of the flower seller dropping their gardener my tools
Oikawa just always walked by, but since he might be repeating this day for he rest of his life (he was over exaggerating) he might as well live it differently
He headed over to help them pick up the tools, but then before he reached them, someone else bent over to help
Oikawa stops and decides to just continue on
“So someone helps them after all.”
After getting a pack of tissues from the vendor and waiting out the swarm of middle-aged ladies, he greets Iwaizumi
“Good morning, Iwa-chan.”
“Oikawa?? What are you doing here?”
“Yes, yes, I am here, my usual train was cancelled so I’m taking this route today.”
He then lets out an exhausted sigh
Iwaizumi immediately notices the unusual lack of energy in Oikawa
“Yes! Very! I’ve been trapped in this day for what feels like forever!”
“Trapped?? You mean your day is repeating? Meaning your soulmate is here?”
“Yes! But I have no idea where! And I’m getting tired! Little kids here, flower seller there, get a tissue, ladies charge into the sale, meet you on the way, bump into someone here—“
Oikawa stops
“That’s strange.”
“What is?”
Iwaizumi was still struggling to absorb all the information that was just given to him
“I’m sure there’s usually a person here.”
“Whatever you say, Oikawa. Well, you better find them soon.”
“What do you think I’ve been trying to do?”
“If you’re frustrated having to live this day over and over again, how do you think they feel?”
The next day (which was the same day, honestly) Oikawa had even more determination to find his soulmate, making it like a video game mission to save the princess
“Today, I will not fail!”
He was reviewing the usual happenings in a day while he was on the way to school
“So first the kids, then the flower seller, then the tissue vendor, then the sale, and then Iwaizumi.”
He stops in his tracks
“And then that person—“
He then hears the usual sound of the kids singing
And then he hears something else
“Hey, wanna learn a new song?”
Oikawa immediately whips his head towards the direction of the new voice
He watches in amazement as he watches them teach the kids a new song
The simple melody sung so sweetly that Oikawa’s heart clenched a little
“Uwa! Thank you!”
The kids thank this teenager whole heartedly before they head off to their destination
This person walks forward, and in all this Oikawa had just been standing there in awe
It was something different
And then it finally hit him
“W-wait!”
Oikawa immediately runs forward, almost stumbling in the process
As he regains his balance, he looks up to see them quite far away already
He bolts forward, and the flower seller’s gardening tools fall right in front of him
“Oh! I’m so sorry!”
Oikawa looks back and forth between the flower seller and the person up ahead before bending down to help pick up the fallen items
“Thank you very much!”
“No problem!”
Oikawa gives the flower seller a bow before dashing again
“Tissues—“
“Sorry! Not today!”
Oikawa runs ahead, dodging the few people up and about that early morning
The person was in his view
And then they weren’t
Oikawa was immediately stopped by the huge crowd of ladies waiting for the 2 hour sale
He inches his way through, looking up every now and then to see if they were still there
They were getting farther and farther by the second
Finally, Oikawa found his way out and was on his way again
“Iwa-chan!”
Iwaizumi whips around, the same amount of surprise on his face
“Oikawa?? What are you—“
Oikawa pats Iwaizumi on the back as he runs ahead
“I found them!”
“Found who?? What?!”
Oikawa starts closing in on them
Could this be it? Was this person his soulmate?
“Wait!”
The person stops, and slowly turns around to see Oikawa, who was now very out of breath
He was slowed down until he finally came to a stop behind them
He took a few seconds to catch his breath
Then he looks up to look at the person he had been running after that morning
“H-how may I help you?”
“Have you been repeating the same day too??”
The excitement of finally having found his soulmate hindered him from finding the right words to say, so he ended up blurting out the first thing that came into his mind
Their eyes widen at Oikawa, and Oikawa then realizes the strangeness of his statement
“Ah, wait, for a sec!”
He then gives out a cry of frustration
“Argh! I’m sorry! This isn’t going so well! Let’s have a redo!”
He then hears a small laugh
“Well, if this isn’t right, then we should both be having a redo tomorrow.”
Oikawa’s eyes widen at the comment
At the same time, his chest tightened as he watched this person’s smile
He extends his hand to them
“I’ll try to do this properly. Hi, I’m—“
Their hands meet, and there’s a small static, a chill down their spines, a feeling that this really was the one they were looking for
At the realization that he had finally found them, Oikawa lips spread into a smile
His soulmate’s heart flutters at the sight
“I’m Oikawa Tooru. What’s your name?”
IWAIZUMI HAJIME
“If you find your soulmate, the timer on your arm, which is always counting up, will stop the time you meet them. But if you don’t find your soulmate by your 18th birthday, you will die by the end of that year.”
“Come on! I know this beautiful place where we can watch the fireworks!”
It was 30 minutes until 12, 30 minutes until the end of December 31st, Iwaizumi’s last day
Both of their last day
Iwaizumi wasn’t able to meet his soulmate, and as the year was coming to a close, he had finally accepted that he never would
There was an app designed to connect the youth with different people near their area that would be dying the same year they would and Iwaizumi tried it out
As ridiculous as it may seem, you die if you don’t find your soulmate by the deadline of 18 years old, and that’s just how things were
It wasn’t uncommon, teenagers who were never able to live beyond 18, so this was just a way for them to cope with it
And this was what brought Iwaizumi and this person together
Iwaizumi took one last look at that timer etched on his skin, counting up to his last hours, before meeting the person the app had set him up with
It was 8:04 am
This person, like him, wasn’t able to find their soulmate, and was also going to die
“You must be the last person I’ll be seeing before I die.”
“Let’s not think of it like that. Let’s just drop the formalities and think of it as some weird blind date. Call me Hajime.”
The polite smile transformed into one much more genuine
The fear of death was no longer relevant to them both, it was coming, and soon, so might as well enjoy the last day while they could
“Then you can call me ___.”
They sat together in the park and put together the biggest bucket list they could think of
It had anything they could do last minute: human slingshot, piercings, horror houses, restaurant hopping, spicy food challenges, temple visits, sushi restaurants, kimono renting, canoeing, lantern painting, and so much more
And they did everything, well, almost everything
They sat together at the top of the secluded hill, admiring the messy and almost completed bucket list
“Too bad the tattoo salon was closed today, eh, Hajime?”
“Nah, I think the pain of the piercing alone is enough to last me a lifetime.”
The person seated beside him gives off a careless laugh, a laugh that Iwaizumi had been admiring throughout the entirety of the day
“It will, Hajime. It will.”
Iwaizumi’s companion lies down on the grass, stretching their arms out
“I have a question for you.”
They’ve been exchanging questions the whole day, to learn more about each other, just a fun game they came up with to keep the conversations going
“Alright, what is it?”
“Why did you decide to spend your last day with me? What about your family? Or your close friends?”
Iwaizumi breaks eye contact and faces forward as he processes the question
“… I didn’t want to burden them with this. The fact that I’m going to be gone. My family… They won’t be able to handle it, so I thought it would be for the best if they started the new year with happy feelings instead of mourning.”
“And how about your friends?”
“They all found the one they needed. It’s just me.”
Iwaizumi pauses for a moment, imagining scenes of how upset his friends would be when they find out he was out here on his own
He snaps out of it, and tries to shake off the sudden sadness he felt
“And how about you?”
“Same as you.”
They then sit up to meet Iwaizumi’s eyes
“I don’t want the last thing I see to be the sad look they have when they see me go.”
Iwaizumi’s companion stands up and walks a little, looking down at the glittering lights of the shrines down below
“Don’t you wish that things weren’t this way? That there was another system? Or no system at all.”
They sigh and continue to stare down at the town
Iwaizumi stands up and heads over to stand beside them
“As much as I hate it, I don’t think it’s that bad.”
He sweeps their hair away from their face
“I was able to meet you after all.”
“Very smooth, Hajime.”
“Shut up.”
They laugh
“Back at you. This was the best last day ever. Thank you.”
Their lip quivers, and the smile they had just given Iwaizumi was starting to lose shape
They tried to fight back their tears, but were failing terribly
Iwaizumi pulls them into a hug, letting them cry into his chest
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s gotten into me, I—“
“It’s okay. It’s okay.”
They cry a bit more, Iwaizumi comforting them
He had forgotten the fear of his own death
All that was on his mind was how he could help this person
He wanted them to live on
Iwaizumi’s companion separates themselves from him, bringing Iwaizumi back from his thoughts
Their eyes were still glassy, but they were able to muster a smile
“It’s almost time.”
It was only then that Iwaizumi was made aware of the sound of restless chatter from down below
They were getting ready for the countdown to midnight
Iwaizumi’s expression was painfully grim
His companion cups his cheek and gives him another smile
“It’s okay.”
It was finally ending
Iwaizumi could feel his eyes burning, but he fought back his tears
His companion gingerly caresses his cheek with their thumb
“It’s okay.”
They both lay themselves on the grass, side by side
They stare at the stars for awhile
Suddenly, his companion takes a hold of his hand
Static sparks in between their fingers, causing Iwaizumi to whip his head towards them
His cheeks started to burn red
“May I?”
They then reveal a toothy grin
Iwaizumi smiles back
“You may.”
They both turn back to the sky
His companion lets out a large sigh
“Where could they be?”
“Who?”
“Our soulmates! Are they happy? Are they dying too? What are they doing wasting time right now?”
Iwaizumi could only laugh at the amusing amount of energy his companion still had in them
“I wonder.”
He lets out a small laugh again
“If I had a say on who my soulmate would be, I would choose you.”
Now it was his companion’s turn to laugh
“Then we wouldn’t have to die now, would we?”
“We wouldn’t.”
They both laugh
Iwaizumi tightens his grip on their hand
“But still. It would’ve been nice.”
His companion tightens their hold on his hand too
“Yeah. Think of how much more adventures we could’ve gone on.”
“No tattoos though.”
“Alright, Hajime, whatever you say.”
They can hear the faint sound of people counting down
“___, thank you for today. It really was the best last day ever.”
“Same, Hajime, same.”
They hear the sound of cheering, and the whistling of fireworks
Iwaizumi looks at the bright flash of glitter in the sky one last time right before slowly closing his eyes
He braced himself for the death awaiting him
How would it be like, he wondered
He waited for the sound of the fireworks to fade away, for the darkness to turn to light, for the timer etched on his skin to disappear, for the warmth in his hand to go cold
But it didn’t
Iwaizumi lied there for a few minutes, long enough for the sound of the fireworks to die down
Immediately, he sits up, and frantically looks around
Did something go wrong? Was he still alive? Or was he dead? And this was just some weird kind of afterlife?
He whips his head towards his companion, who was still lying on the ground
Their eyes were wide open, staring at him, with the same amount of confusion as his
“We’re—?”
“We’re alive?!”
Iwaizumi’s mind was a mess
He had prepared himself the whole day for what he didn’t want to come, but now that it didn’t come he didn’t know what to feel
“This makes no sense.”
Iwaizumi then quickly pulls back his sleeve to check his arm, only to find his timer still there
But it had stopped
“8:04…”
He read out the time and looked to his companion to see them slowly sitting up
They were staring at their own timer, their face stuck in one of awe
“… 8:04.”
Iwaizumi’s eyes widen and his companion looks up to meet them with theirs
“You’re—?!”
“It was you?!”
They stare at each other, frozen in their seats before bursting into laughter
Iwaizumi then pulls them into a hug
“So it was you.”
Tears started to form in his soulmate’s eyes, and they rested their head against his chest
“Yeah. And so were you.”
KUROO TETSURŌ
“Everyone is born with a unique number only they and their soulmates have.”
The school day was over, and Kuroo was on his way home from school
Kenma got dragged away by his teacher, so it was only Kuroo today
On his way out, he could hear the excited chatter of a couple nearby, their arms linked together, their faces this close to each other, and their numbers replicating each other’s perfectly
Kuroo always rolls his eyes at these “perfect” couples, those people who found their soulmate, but that’s also because he didn’t know how it felt to find his soulmate
Your soulmate was the person who was born with the same number as you
If you found them through the millions of different number combinations in the world, that was it
Kuroo subconsciously scratches his left collar bone, where his number lied underneath his shirt
Kuroo would sometimes wonder how the unknown force that ran their world thought of such a weird way for people to find their soulmate, and how this unknown force was immature enough to give him the number he had
Only his family and closest friends knew what his number was, and they’d have a laugh about it every now and then
Kuroo was thinking about how he was going to go about his homework when something caught his eye
A person walked past him, and right on the back of their palm, Kuroo could see three digits resembling his own
His heart jumped, and he acted the way that any reasonable person would do at the possibility of their soulmate
He hid behind a bush
He peeked over to see this person again, to make sure that those does three digits really were right
They were, but now he had no way of confirming the other two, that were hiding under their sleeve
“Cursed blazers”
“Kuroo?”
His heart jumps for the second time today, and he whips around to see a classmate of his standing behind him
“What are you doing—“
“Quick! Hide!”
He immediately pulls their arm, making them hide together with him behind the bush
“Why are we hiding??”
Kuroo immediately shushes them
“Today might be the day I meet my soulmate.”
“What?! Who?”
They peek stand up straight, looking around to see who this person was
Kuroo pulls them back down
“Are you crazy?!”
“You don’t know when a chance like this will ever come back up again! The first digits that person has is pretty hard to find, so are you going to sis around or hurry up?”
Kuroo takes a peek from the side of the bush
His possible soulmate was already quite far away
“Alright. But I’ll have to see what their full number is first!”
He quickly stands up and dashes after them, pulling his classmate along with him
“Why am I coming along too?!”
“Come on! I need back up!”
They both follow Kuroo’s soulmate candidate for awhile, not missing any opportunity to see those last two digits, but failing each time
They finally follow them to a cafe, and the both of them decided they would take a break there too
They sit themselves at a table not too far away, Kuroo’s back turned against his possible soulmate
His classmate asks the server for the menus, and Kuroo watches as they do
“Why are you always wearing that?”
“Wearing what?”
“That sports jacket. Aren’t you hot in there?”
His classmate responds to him without looking up from the menu
“It’s not about the temperature. I’m just more comfortable this way.”
“Why?”
They look up to Kuroo to reply, but see his attention already to the person behind him
He quickly whips around after taking a little peek, a glitter of joy in his eyes at the possibility of this person being the one
It was this side of him that his classmate rarely saw
He immediately puts his attention to his classmate
“Hey! ___! Can you see their number from here?”
His classmates snaps out of their trance-like state they were in staring at Kuroo and tries to have a look at this person’s arms
Kuroo whispers to them excitedly
“So? What is it?”
His classmate slowly reads out the first three numbers on the back of this person’s hand
“I know that already! What’s the rest of them?”
“I don’t know! Why am I the one here anyway?! I don’t even know what your number is!”
“J-just tell me what the number is!”
“I can’t! It’s hidden, moron!”
Their next few attempts in the cafe brought the same results: a lot of bickering and a whole lot of nothing
They were still arguing as they left the cafe
“Seriously, usually we work so well together. What’s happening today?”
They follow Kuroo’s soulmate candidate to a rowing park, where they got into a boat and started to row with a friend
Kuroo and his classmate proceeded to get a boat of their own and went out into the lake
“Well, this is nice.”
“It is actually.”
“And Kuroo is being such a gentleman right now, rowing us all by himself.”
“Aren’t I always a gentleman?”
Kuroo gives off a laugh as he rows them further into the lake
“Hey, Kuroo.”
“Yes?”
“Does what you’re doing right now make you a stalker?”
Kuroo then narrows his eyes at his companion
“I don’t think so, as you said, a chance like this may not come again, and if this person really is my soulmate, then this is it.”
“I know that’s what I said, but I can’t help but feel that—“
They pause to think of how they could phrase what they wanted to say
“Feel that what?”
“Well, if this soulmate mumbo jumbo is true, then maybe you’ll end up together without this much effort put in? Like, it’s really meant to be.”
Kuroo himself was starting to doubt what he was doings but he was already determined to see if this person was the one, and he had done too much to stop now
“Well, I honestly wished that was the case for me. That my soulmate was someone with me all along. But we just can’t help that some things in life have to be worked for, right?”
As his classmate opened their mouth to answer, they caught a glimpse of the person they were tailing rolling up their sleeves to make it easier to row the boat
Kuroo’s companion bolts to their feet, causing the boat to shake a little
“Hey! Sit down! The boat is gonna—!”
“They rolled up their sleeves! I can see the number now!”
Kuroo’s eyes widen, and he rises to his feet as well, excitedly asks them what it is, his attention no longer on the fact that they were standing on a boat in the middle of a lake
His classmate squints their eyes at her arm
They call out the first three digits
“We know that already! What are the last two numbers?!”
They squint their eyes to look at their arm one more time
“0… 1! It’s 01!”
They excitedly look at Kuroo only to see his face frozen
“01, huh? That’s not my number?”
“Huh?! It’s not?!”
“Nope…”
They pause for awhile
And then Kuroo’s classmate lets out a laugh
“Then what was all that for?”
Their laugh infect Kuroo and he gives off a laugh of his own
“I can’t believe it didn’t turn out to be them!”
“And you were so sure you’d be finding your soulmate today too!”
“Oh, shut up!”
Kuroo reaches out to ruffle their hair and they dodge
“Hey, wait—!”
They tip over the balance of the boat and both fall into the lake
They both just laugh together as they scramble back onto the boat and row back to shore
“Hey, ___.”
“What is it?”
“Thank you for going along with me today.”
They give Kuroo a punch on the shoulder
“Don’t worry about it. It was fun.”
They were both dripping wet from head to foot
As Kuroo was squeezing the water out of his blazer, he catches his classmate taking off their jacket in the side of their eye
“What a legendary moment! ___ is actually removing their jacket!”
“Oh, shut up, it’s not like it can be helped.”
Kuroo goes closer to them, ready to pry
“You never were able to tell me why you keep wearing that.”
They frown at him before facing away
“I’m embarrassed about…”
“About?”
“My number.”
“Your number??”
“Y-you’re not allowed to laugh, moron!”
“Alright, alright.”
They take off their jacket, Kuroo waiting in anticipation to see just what kind of number was waiting for him
They pull of their sleeves to reveal their number marked on their forearm
Kuroo inches closer to look at the number, ready to tease, but as he sees the number, all plans of making fun of them disappear
“69…420…”
“Yes, yes, lay it on me. ‘___’s number itself is a joke!’”
But Kuroo didn’t laugh, and Kuroo didn’t tease
He stayed silent
His classmate turns to him, confusion evident in their face
“Kuroo? What’s wrong? Where’s the mockery?”
Kuroo stays frozen for awhile
“Kuroo?”
In his silence, Kuroo starts to unbutton his shirt
“Woah! Kuroo, what’s going on—“
Kuroo reveals his own number, the one sitting on his left collar bone, and his classmate goes silent as well
“… 69420?”
“69420.”
They stare straight at Kuroo, their cheeks slowly burning red
Kuroo then bursts out laughing, causing his companion to get flustered
“What?! You think this is some kind of joke—“
“You were right! We really did end up together! Who knew that you were my other half that had this ridiculous number on them too!”
“Shut up—!”
He then gives them a tender smile while sweeping their wet hair away from their face
“For some reason, I’m glad that it’s you.”
“What do you mean ‘for some reason,’ huh?”
They give him a punch on the shoulder, but all Kuroo does is laugh
They look away and mumble softly
“I’m glad that it’s you too, moron.”
KITA SHINSUKE
“Your soulmate leaves colorful footprints only visible to you.”
Kita stared down on the pavement
The roads were lined with a trail of footprints, alternating between a few of the most beautiful colors he had ever seen
He was distracted by them the whole way home from the grocery
“Grandmother, is there going to be an event soon?”
He laid the grocery bags on the kitchen table right next to where his grandmother was at work
“I don’t think so, Shinsuke. Why? Did something happen?”
“Well, the streets were decorated with colorful paint so I just thought that there was going to be an event.”
His grandma looks up from her cooking and turns to Shinsuke
“What kind of decoration, dear?”
“Footprints left around. I didn’t see them yesterday, maybe the painted it last night—“
Before he could finish that thought, his grandmother went over to him and held both of his hands
“Shinsuke, why don’t you go out and follow that trail? Was it going somewhere?”
“Yeah, it was, but—“
“Follow the footprints and it will lead you to your soulmate.”
Kita stared at his grandmother, his expression still monotonous
“Grandma, is this another one of your stories, or…?”
“Your soulmate leaves footprints that only you can see. Now go!”
She pushes her grandson to the door, and Kita was unwillingly off
He was still a bit skeptical about the whole thing, but his grandmother told him to follow the trail, so that’s what he was going to do
Fortunately, he didn’t have anything planned for the rest of the day
He went back to where he first saw the footprints
As he followed the footprints, it seemed to be true that he was the only one who could see them
He dodged his way through the crowds, which were getting bigger as the day passed
He followed the footprints back to see that it led back to the supermarket he was just in
He goes along the trail to see that this person had walked almost the whole supermarket, it was a wonder that he didn’t notice the footprints before
A clutter of the footprints was found in the canned goods section
Kita then remembers a big crash he heard earlier that day when he was shopping
His lips curve upward ever so slightly
“So that was them, huh?”
He continues to follow the footprints out the supermarket and further into the shopping district
The footprints made a few stops, Kita dropping by each one
He went in a pet store, the footprints covering the floor, passing each and every animal carrier
He went in a bookstore, tracing the shelves of classic novels and poetry books, and maybe a few in the manga section too
He went in a bakery, and he might’ve laughed a little at the fact that their steps ignored all the other baked goods and sweets and only trailed along the section with bread
He passed by a lot of food stands, the number of how many they visited shocking him
He walked through the park, noticing the little skips in their steps and occasional walks on the grass
Kita became so intrigued by what kind of person they were, that he forgot all about the fact that they were his soulmate
He took a little break to sit on a bench to look out at the lake
After a couple of minutes he got up again and followed the footprints back to town
It was then that he noticed the footprints slowly fading away
He looked back to see that the trail he had followed just awhile ago were also gone
He sped up his pace, the pressure of a time limit seeping in
He followed the colorful footprints, all the way through town
He was so absorbed in them that he only noticed the trail was leading to his home when he was at his door
The footprints made a U-turn and were headed back to the shopping district
Kita was a bit confused but decided to continue following the footprints to see where they led
The supermarket, the pet store, the bookstore
Was he just tracing his own footsteps now? Was this a wild goose chase after all?
As he was contemplating whether to continue this quest or not, an old woman who was carrying a grocery bags caught his eye
She was struggling to cross the road
Kita goes over to offer help
“Excuse me, ma’am. Do you need any help?”
The old woman agrees, calling Kita a “cute boy”
Kita carries her bags for her and helps her across the street
He politely says his goodbyes to her and bows as she leaves
Just then, he hears a voice from behind
“Um, excuse me.”
He turns around to see someone behind him
At the sight of him, the person immediately gets flustered
“Ah! Um—! Well, this is awkward. How do I go about this—?”
They take a step towards him, and underneath their feet, Kita sees the colorful imprint that he had been following around for the whole day
He walks towards them as well
The person in front of him takes a quick glance at his feet before looking into his face
Kita worried that his facial expression was too stern, but this only made his face tense up more
The stranger breaks the silence
“Do you see them too?”
Their expression immediately breaks to one of distress
Kita quietly thought to himself that it looked kind of cute
“As creepy as it may seem, I have been following a pair of footprints the whole day, and well, it turned out that they were yours. So, I was wondering if you saw them too.”
Kita shakes his head
“Nope.”
The person’s expression dampens
“Oh—“
“But I see yours.”
Their eyes widen at Kita
“I‘m sorry if it’s creepy, but I also have been following your footprints all day.”
His expression softens, thinking back at all the places he had been to
“Are you alright? Seems like a bunch of canned goods fell on you.”
“How did you—?”
They then bury their face into their hands
“How embarrassing!”
Kita steps closer to them and extends his hand to them
They lift up their heads to look at him
“I’m Kita Shinsuke. Nice to meet you. What’s your name?”

Kageyama stood outside of Oikawa’s apartment waiting forsomeone to open the door. He knocked again, harder and a bit more impatientthis time. He heard Iwazumi’s comingthrough the wood and relaxed, thankful that at least someone was in the apartment.
“Oh, Kageyama,” Iwaizumi said, relief written all over hisface. “He’s in his room. I was gonna go get some food real quick but if you’rehere then..”
Kageyama stiffened his grip on the convenience store bag, shifting his weight between his legs and frowned. He really didn’t want to bealone with Oikawa. He still hasn’t forgotten the older setter’s face from thelast practice match, pissed off, hurt, guilty.
“Can you come back?” He asked in a timid voice, looking awayfrom Iwaizumi’s knowing stare. “Take your time Iwaizumi-senpai, just come backplease.”
“No problem,” Iwaizumi smiled, placing a comforting palm onKageyama’s shoulder as he left the apartment. “I’ll text you when I’m comingback.”
Kageyama nodded and walked into Oikawa’s place, the AC onhigh as he shivered and walked towards the kitchen. He set the plastic bag onthe table and carefully treaded towards Oikawa’s room, knocking gently on theclosed door.
“Go away.”
He coughed and licked his lips.
“It’s me Oikawa-senpai. Can you let me in?”
“No.”
He sighed loudly and leaned against the door, sure that thebrunet was in his bed, curled up in the comfort of his blankets and fluffypillows. He didn’t press his senpai to let him in nor did he try to get hissenpai to talk to him. He simply turned around and sat against the white door, head leaning back and hitting the door with a gentle thud.
“I’m sorry.”
It wasn’t the right thing to say, in fact, Kageyama didn’tknow why he even said that. Was it because he felt bad that he didn’t know whatto do? Was it because the look on Oikawa’s face from their practice matchagainst Austria reminded him of middle school? Was it because the competitivenature in him was happy about the setter switched and the ultimate win underhis steady but powerful spikes?
“I’m sorry,” he said again, closing his eyes and hoping thatOikawa would just take the apology and warp it to what mattered the most.
He sat there for a good hour if he were to estimate, untilIwazumi entered the apartment again, the smell of takeout, making his stomachgrumble.
“Did he leave his room?” Iwazumi asked, eyebrow rising asKageyama walked into the kitchen eyeing the food ravenously.
“No,” he answered, looking away from the table, guilt risingin his chest as Iwazumi sighed heavily.
“It’s not your fault Kageyama. You know how he gets,” hesaid, shrugging and handed Kageyama a white box full of Mongolian beef. “Thechopsticks are in the bag.”
“Thanks,” Kageyama murmured, reaching into the bag fordisposable chopsticks and looked around the kitchen. “I’ll leave when I’mfinished eating.”
“If it makes you feel better, he was spewing insults andcomplaints up till the moment you got here.”
It didn’t make him feel better, but he gave his senpai a half-heartedsmile and continued to eat.
In their next practice match, Oikawa played the entire game.He was blazing bright with intensity, his spikes were sharp and untouchable, andthere were no wasted movements in his steps. He’s the perfect emulation of aprodigal volleyball player. Something in his stomach clenched as Kageyama heardthe final whistle, the ref telling them to line up and he avoided Oikawa’sgaze.
“I see you didn’t break,” Ushijima said and if it wereanyone but him, Kageyama would think they wanted to start a fight.
“As if I would break over something like that,” Oikawascoffed; rolling his eyes but takes the hidden compliment.
He passed by Kageyama, nodding his head at Kageyama’s soft good game and walked away from the teamtired but rightfully proud.
Oikawa doesn’t play in the next two matches.
-
“Your serves were shaky in the third set.”
Kageyama paused in his stretching, his fingers shaking a bitfrom the exhaustion of the last rally.
“I know, the coach already gave me an earful.”
“You also took too big of a step for your last toss almostsending the ball over the net. You did thank Ushijima for managing to hit thatshitty ball right?”
“Yes Oikawa-senpai, I did.” Kageyama said. He actuallythanked him twice, once for receiving a serve that he was too slow to react toand for hitting his toss that was absolutely hideous. “He said not to worryabout it and to train harder in order for it not to happen again.”
“Sounds like him,” Oikawa sniffed, footsteps coming closingand Kageyama finally turned to face him. “Need help stretching?”
“I’m good,” Kageyama said, going back to reaching to histoes.
Oikawa sat down next to him, a bottle of pocari sweat settlingbetween them.
“Iwa-chan said I needed to thank you for the milk bread.”
“You’re welcome,” Kageyama mumbled, ignoring the petulanttone of his senpai. “I wasn’t sure which brand you liked so I just got themall.”
“Yet you managed not to get my favorite,” Oikawa snorted, rolling his eyes and brought his knees to his chest so he could rest his headon them. “How are you doing in school?”
“I’m only taking online classes so it’s not hard,” Kageyamasaid, bringing his feet together for a butterfly stretch. He turned to Oikawaand asked the same question back.
“It’s going good, not as easy as my second year but I’llmanage.”
Kageyama nodded and finished up his cool down, standing upand eyeing the water bottle.
“It’s for you,” Oikawa said, getting up from his weirdposition and lifted the bottle to the younger setter. “I figured you needed adrink.”
“Thanks.”
“You were really good today,” Oikawa said, his complimentsounding extra loud in the empty training room. “I couldn’t take my eyes offyou.”
“I feel the same,” Kageyama blurted, looking away anddowning half the bottle after that confession. “I mean, when you play. I don’tdare to look away.”
“I guess you haven’t changed from middle school in thataspect,” Oikawa said, smiling softly at him. “I acted pretty spoiled a couplegames ago. It was my fault for over practicing and messing up, I had no rightto treat you like you were the problem.”
“I understand,” Kageyama said, nodding along because thefrustration of being pulled from the game is something that he’ll never getused to. “Coach already told us that we’re going to be switchedindiscriminately in order to keep the other team on their toes. I don’t mind ifit’s you I get switched for.”
“Hah,” Oikawa huffed, crossing his arms. “Is that acompliment? I’m not sure what to take that as.”
“Take what you will,” Kageyama mumbled, rolling his eyes atOikawa’s puffed cheeks. “I’m going now. Goodnight Oikawa-senpai.”
-
Their qualifying game for the Olympic semi-finals was tense.Too much passion and nerves and mistakes made them the ones struggling to catchup. Kageyama was one of the youngest on the team and he could tell that thestress from his teammates was affecting him, his tosses too early and hisreceives too sloppy.
Being relieved for Oikawa should have left a bitter taste inhis mouth but as he watched his senpai go onto the court, hope filled his veinsthat if anyone could turn the game around, it was Oikawa.
They won. It wasn’t shocking. It wasn’t a terse affair ofrallies and crowd silencing spikes. It was an absolute dominance over thecourt, courtesy of Oikawa. Every toss, every receive, every pass was soaccurate to the point that their own teammates were shocked at the rate theywere gaining points.
Their win was enhanced by the screaming fans, the cheeringof their teammates, and the happy yelling from their coach. Kageyama got upfrom the bench grabbing Oikawa’s wrist as another teammate ruffled his hair.
“I knew you’d do it Senpai.”
Oikawa’s eyes widened before he broke out into laughing, covering his mouth as his teammates slapped his back and praised him.
“Thanks for holding out,” he replied, and Kageyama knew whathe meant.
“We still have more games until we can take home the goldmedal.”
Oikawa stopped covering his mouth and the rest of the teamquieted down after Kageyama’s reminder.
“Yeah we do.”
-
“Don’t get too cockyjust because you brought the gold medal home,” Oikawa said, handing Kageyama a rollof sports tape.
It was just the two of them in the locker room, the rest ofthe team already headed out to finish their interviews and head to the hotelwhere they would all leave together to go celebrate.
“It was a team effort Oikawa-senpai,” Kageyama said, notcaring that he hadn’t stop smiling since the ref declared their win. “Icouldn’t do it without you.”
“Pft, yeah right,” Oikawa teased, closing his bag as hewaited for Kageyama to finish up. “But in all seriousness, good job startingthe game and giving us the first set Tobio.”
Kageyama slowed down his application of sports tape on hisfingers at the usage of his first name without the annoying honorific. Hewanted to hear that again and again, the word sounding so different coming fromOikawa’s mouth than his friend’s or mother’s.
“One more time,” Kageyama requested as he stood up andstared intensely at his teammate.
“Good job?” He joked, eyebrows scrunched together inconfusion as to what Kageyama really wanted.
“My name.”
“Oh.”
Kageyama waited as Oikawa flushed slightly, looking away andrunning his hand through his hair, having slight difficulties due to the driedup sweat.
“You were absolutely amazing out there Tobio.”
Kageyama laughed slightly and looked away from the browneyes that seemed to glow under the fluorescent lighting. He focused on a waterbottle wrapper left under one of the benches as he thought of something to say.
“You were pretty great as well Tooru.”
The name slipped off his tongue, foreign and unsure, howeverOikawa seemed to take great delight in his kouhai’s attempt to close thedistance between them.
“Ah, aren’t we a little eager to start being familiar witheach other?” He teased, reaching out to ruffle the younger setter’s hair. “Comeon, the team is waiting.”
Kageyama lifted his bag on his shoulder and followed Oikawaout, heart beating fast and pink dusting the apples of his cheeks. Tooru, he mouthed, holding in a laugh ashis medal pressed against his chest.
