The Grant Legacy - Generation 2 - The Second Act - Part 1

It has been four months since Este was born. It is now October and there have been some happenings in the lives of Vera, her family, friends and enemies.

The Grant-Vatore Household- Hendford-on-Bagley

Este is now four months old. Caleb has quit his job at the graveyard to be a full-time stay at home Dad. He doesn't want to miss a precious second of his little girl growing up. Vera has started back, part-time, at the Vet Clinic with Zoe Frenz handling a lot of the day to day operations. It's been a bit rough for Vera to be away from her daughter but Caleb makes sure to take Este to visit Mommy on a regular basis when Vera is at the clinic.

Josie did indeed get to meet Este. This is Josie hanging out with Este shortly before Josie crossed the rainbow bridge in her sleep at the very end of September. The whole family misses her terribly, especially Vera. She and Josie had been together for many years.

Lucky also misses her furry pal and has been feeling a bit down with no one to play with. She's grown close to Este, rarely leaving the infants side when she is home. Vera is having a hard time with the idea of finding another cat to take into their family. Caleb has suggested maybe a puppy for Lucky to play with instead. Vera is torn because she's always had a feline around since the moment she entered the world.

Otherwise, things are going well for Vera and her family. They haven't heard a peep out of James since before Este was born, which they find odd but maybe he's gotten bored and moved on?

The Grant Household - Sulani

AJ has grown into a child and it's turning out to be quite the responsible young man. Mew Mew is still his constant companion when AJ is at home, despite turning into an elder kitty. Apollo enjoys helping his son with his homework when he's not at his job as a Cog in the Machine in the Engineer career.

Naya does her best to try to help AJ with his school work as well, but she's become very busy with her career. She's made it to Ensemble Author in the Style Influencer Career. Being a bit older than Apollo, Naya feels like she only has so much time left to make her mark in the fashion industry before she's considered "washed up". It's led to a few issues between the high school sweethearts as Apollo feels Naya's career is taking up time she should be spending with her family. Naya feels Apollo don't understand her viewpoint because he's fine if he never advances in his career. He's just happy being able use his love of science at work and help provide for his family.

The Zhu/Volkov Household - Moonwood Mill

Once AJ became older, Lily decided that although she loves AJ it was time for her to return to Moonwood Mill and to her pack. She still visits AJ when she gets the chance to. She also keeps in touch with Caleb and his family, along with Lilith. They have all made progress in their relationships with one another though they may never be as close as they once all were.

Another development in Lily's life is love. She never thought it would happen at her age but Kristopher declared his love for her once she returned. She has always had feelings for him since she met him all those years ago and he helped her find who she's really meant to be. Kristopher's adopted son Jacob is thrilled that his Dad has finally found someone, especially since it's Lily, who has always been a mother figure to him. Rory, Kristopher's adopted daughter, acts like she could care less.

The Vatore Household - Forgotten Hollow

Despite Lilith's infidelity with Vladislaus Straud, Jackson has chosen to forgive his maker when he saw that she had nothing to do with the Count once Lilith came clean to him. She even went as far as to have Dakota Laws place a spell on the Vatore estate grounds so Count Straud can't step foot on the property, let alone slither into Lilith's bed. The vampire duo have reunited and are trying to make things work between them. Jackson has even started working again as a writer's assistant. He's made great strides in controlling his blood lust thanks to Lilith and his friendship with Lurch.

Lilith is glad that Jackson has forgiven her and thrilled to have not only a new niece in her life but contact with a cousin she thought was lost to her forever, Lily. Yet still there's a ache in her non beating heart that thinks of a certain pipe organ playing vampire that lives across town.

Nacho is living in the lap of luxury for him, considering he came from the streets. Lilith spoils him rotten, buying him whatever his furry little heart desires whether it's tuna fish or crab. Jackson has also started warming up more to him and Nacho enjoys the scratches the male vampire gives him when Jackson returns home from a day of work.

The Lewis Household - Brindleton Bay

August and Aubree got quite the surprise when Aubree when into labor in September.

Twins! Little Edgar Allan and Emily, named after two of Aubree's favorite poets. The couple was obviously shocked. Little Emily had hidden behind her brother everytime Aubree went to have an ultrasound done. To say the couple wasn't prepared would be a accurate statement. Caleb helped them out by rushing to buy an extra set of everything in the nursery.

August has cut down some of his hours of work as a Mailroom Technician at Landgraab Industries, while Aubree is about to return from maternity leave to her Editor in Chief job. Given they have not only the twins but their dog Thor and their cat Bette Davis to feed, they can't afford not to work. They are considering hiring a Nanny to help take care of the twins.

The Laws/Ambrose/Gates Household - Brindleton Bay

Jillian is five months along with her and Dakota's first child. Jillian still has her job at the local bookstore while Dakota has just been promoted to a Private Fourt Class in the Army. In an attempt to save some money, they approached Joey with the idea of moving into a smaller home. He agreed and so they moved across town. Joey still has his own room, which Annabel Lee has also claimed as hers while Jillian and Dakota now share a room. The third bedroom in the house has been turned into a nursery. While Jillian was scared at first to be pregnant so early in her relationship with Dakota, now she's excited. Dakota is as well, he never misses a Doctor's appointment and hopes he can make it to all of them as work allows. Their relationship is doing well and they feel it's growing stronger each day.

Dakota hasn't give up his quest to find out where in the world Thaddeus Laws is, especially now that he's going to be a father, but the trail has run cold. Dakota knows his so called Father is alive but Thaddeus certainly doesn't want to be found it seems.

Joey is now an Medical Assistant and is happy that he gets to work with Doctor Annalise Blake. Despite her being a vampire, she has a lot of medical knowledge and is a pleasant being to be around. He's grown very close to the families' cat, Annabel Lee. He swears she understands everything he's saying to her. He's always heard most cats do whatever they want but if he tells her to go eat her food or don't jump on the stove, it's hot. The cat actually listens to him.

Sadly Joey hasn't had much luck in his love life. He's gone on a few random dates here and there but none of it has turned into anything more. He's starting to wonder if he just isn't meant to be with someone.

I have a few:

Harry Potter: The Demigod Who Lived by DGJabberwocky

Harry Potter, son of Lily and James Potter. . . And the Goddess Artemis. Harry being a demigod and growing up with the Hunt and around Camp changes a lot of things. His character is a bit too ... perfect, and the story as a whole is kind of ' does not seem realistic for a character this age to do that kind of thing', but a good read. Gen. Incomplete.

2. The Warrior and The King - A Percy Jackson/Harry Potter Crossover by vega

In which Zoe Bianca Jackson finds out she is not just the legacy of two of the most famous heroes, but also a witch. A casually fun read. Canon relationships. Incomplete.

3. hoax by WiseGirl35

Percy and Annabeth are sent back to the marauders era while interrupting a ritual Circe was preparing and after being given a quest. BAMF Percabeth, and a lot of Harry Potter canon divergence. Amazing character dynamics. Canon relationships. Incomplete.

4. Harry Potter and New Rome by Takara Phoenix

This one is less of a crossover, more a mash-up. The Harry Potter characters are all demigods. Nico di Angelo and Percy Jackson are parents to Luna Lovegood, uncles to Piper and Annabeth's daughter Hermione Granger, keeping an eye on Octavian who is fostering Draco Malfoy and becoming friends with Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, who are adopting their godson, legacy of Pluto Harry Potter. Twoshot. Nicercy, Wolfstar and Drarry.

5. Sally Jackson, Daughter of Voldemort, Mother of Percy by Black_Victor_Cachat

A really amazing fic which plays on the Percy is Voldemort's grandson trope by having Voldemort kidnap Sally for a ritual and Sally escape by being the BAMF she is. Little does she know about the army coming for her, though. Featuring demigods wreaking havoc on the Death Eaters, Sally mothering everyone, the Wizarding War taking a sudden turn, and Percy being the most powerful person on Earth simply by virtue of his connections. Canon pairings. Post The Trials of Apollo.

6. Secrets by S.P. Kumar

An Original Character focused fic set in the Marauders era and post The Last Olympian. Mostly based in Hogwarts, where, as the title suggests, her friends find out about her being a demigod. Episodic. Sirius Black/OC. Incomplete.

7. Percy Jackson: Grandson of Voldemort by Poke_Master57

A lighthearted fic set after Blood of Olympus and Deathly Hallows with a very casual and humorous tone. A 'Percy Jackson is the Grandson of Voldemort' fic. A very realistic explanation for how Percy is Voldemort's grandson, a beautiful Percy and Annabeth friendship, Percy being a legendary Hufflepuff, and the Golden Trio being distant from him and not instantly best friends. Gen. Incomplete.

9. Half-Blood Means Two Things || Marauders Era | Percy Jackson || by lyd squiddd

Another OC centric fic, with this one being far from both of the series' canon, progressing in its own way, just using the settings. Pre-Percy Jackson series, and during the Marauders era. Incomplete.

10. Kinetic Energy by Irisinally

Percy and Harry are cousins, and meet on a family trip to London. Harry asking Percy about Voldemort leads to a quest being sent to Hogwarts, and Percy participating in the Triwizard Tournament. Post Blood of Olympus. More character and relationship focused than plot. First fic complete, with a sequel underway. Canon relationships.

Incredible fic, featuring tired BAMF powerful dark Slytherin Percy, who is yet the compassionate demigod we all know and love. Another Percy is Voldemort's grandson fic, where Percy scares the hell out of anyone who meets him, refuses to take anyone's bs and just wants to save innocent people. Set post Heroes of Olympus and during Order of the Phoenix. Supposed to be Percabeth, but gen for now.

15. Quest to the Past by marisandini

Absolutely brilliant series where Percy is sent back to the Marauders era to keep James Potter and Lily Evans safe, so that Harry can be born to defeat Circe's descendant Voldemort. Percy is our loveable- dumbass-and-yet-smart-Seaweed Brain, and he, Lily and Severus make an iconic trio. A couple fics are complete, with another in the series ongoing. Gen.

Her young life was difficult and despite her usual optimism, she did attempt to leave this world once. That said, her passionate and courageous led to the healing of both herself and her relationship with her father. She has always been drawn to people who understand the pain of not being appreciated for who you are. As a result, she has endured a lot of relational heartache (family, friends, and lovers). Which is ironic, because her connections are everything to her. Ava is bursting forth with love, passion, and creativity and she is the biggest, brightest soul you will ever know.

Seeking to elevate brave Silence Breakers who’ve come forward during the #MeToo movement, Kate Kelton’s portraiture combines their oft familiar faces with elements of her family’s Czech architecture. Her portraits are cloaked in the garb of statues that Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the central train station that her great- grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague between 1901 – 1909. Sampling and mixing her own lineage, Kate has transformed a historical body of work, itself a thing of lasting beauty, exchanging granite for graphite; plaster for paint.

Headdresses and crowns deify Kate Kelton’s subjects. She uplifts the Unsung Sheroes & Heroes, Patriarchy Smashers, Warrior Survivors, Silence Breakers, Philosophers, Truth-Tellers, Whistle Blowers and Thought Giants. She paints portraits cloaked in the garb of statues Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the train station that her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague in 1901 – 1909.

Apotheosis through a reclaimed, reapplied Art Nouveau.

Kate’s recent work is a matter of expansion through contrast – she is as ephemeral as her subjects are concrete architecture; she is structural when her subjects should slip through your fingers like too-fine sand. Taken as a whole, the works in her magnificent series Phoenix are incredibly intelligent, but when looked at individually, you come to understand that these are statements of life beyond themselves. The series take embellishments of a Prague train station designed by her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, and combines these with portraits of men and women who have stood against the sexual harassment and assault rampant in Hollywood –particularly those who have testified against Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, and Bill Cosby, and made allegations against Franco Zeffirelli, Donald Trump, Russell Simmons, Max Landis, Michael Jackson, Nick Carter, Luc Besson, and others. These women, like Kate herself, have suffered in the era where powerful men, every bit as immovable as the train station, wielded their power without check. The portraits emblazoned on architectural elements, they are marked against the edifice, every bit as permanent, and perhaps even more defining. If you approach those as portraits, you’re taking the moment but missing the permanence. If you take them as statuary, you’re missing the fact that they are, in fact, alive within those gazes. It’s really incredible how much a shift of the light, a dart of the eye, can turn each of them from a memorial into a promise. This is not an exhibition about tragedy. This is a monument to courage, survival and empowerment.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kate Kelton was born in the south of Germany, after her parents escaped Czechoslovakia. Her early years were spent in a VW bus traveling Europe with her mother, an abstract painter. Settling in Toronto, Canada at age seven, Kelton attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts as a Visual Arts Major, and received a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film, from Ryerson University. Her father was an architect. His grandfather, and namesake, was Josef Fanta: renowned Art Nouveau architect, engineer and sculptor, who worked closely with Alphonse Mucha. Photographer Dagmar Hochová is Kelton’s great aunt, on her mother’s side. Kelton also had a recurring role on Stephen King’s Haven on the Syfy Channel. When the illustrated re- edition of the book it’s based on, The Colorado Kid, was published, she illustrated the front and back inside covers. Her first lead role on tv was opposite Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard, in the Independent Film Channel’s Bullet In The Face. Alex Maleev illustrated her for the poster. Her first feature film, Deepa Mehta’s The Republic of Love, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her film credits include cult classics, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and American Psycho II. Did you also spot her in music videos, like Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me?” Almost as good as googling her as “the Tic Tac girl.” ;} Kate has exhibited her artwork internationally for decades, at, among others: the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery in the UK; Gallery 1988 in New York, Venice, and West Hollywood; Gabba Gallery, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and Durden & Ray in Los Angeles; Art On Scene in Beverly Hills; Galerie F in Chicago; Lawless Concept in Montreal; and The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Now that Este knows how to crawl, Caleb has been trying to get her to stand on her own. Mama don't like it. I almost got upset with him and asked if he's trying to rush her into growing up but I bit my tongue. I know he's just trying to make sure she grows up well, knowing everything she needs to know to thrive.

I'm happy she's doing so well but at the same time, it's a bittersweet happiness. My little starfish is growing. I want to keep her little but I know I can't.

I have to cheer up, today I'm meeting Aubree in Brindleton Bay at her house - we're having a day at the spa in Newcrest. Caleb is watching Este and to my utter shock, he invited Jackson over. Those two have never really spent much time together but Caleb says he might as well try to get to know Lilith's boyfriend. Especially considering things could be worse - her boyfriend could be Vladislaus Straud.

My Este isn't the only one who is growing. Edgar Allan and Emily have grown quite a bit too since the last time I saw them. I helped Aubree put them down for their naps and got in some cuddles while I was at it.

I met their Nanny as well, Paris Hale. She's pretty. Very pretty. There's something oddly familiar about her and I can't put my finger on it.

"Have a good time at your spa day, ladies." August tolds us with a smile on his face as we headed for the front door. 

I felt like I should talk to Aubree about it but I didn't want to ruin our day. I decided to table the topic until later.

After we got all pampered, we decided to stop at a shop and buy ourselves nice dresses to wear to a fancy restaurant in Newcrest.

The food was good, they even had someone playing the piano beside us. I think Caleb would enjoy that place. It was nice to get to spend time with Aubree. Not only do we live in different towns but we're also married with kids, while also having careers on top of it. We don't always get to see each other but we make it a point to keep in touch. Something that matters to you - you have to make an effort to keep it going.

By the time we got back to Brindleton Bay, it was dark and cold. We went on a small walk around her neighborhood. It filled me with memories of my own time living in town.

"Aubree...there's something oddly familiar about Paris. I don't know what it is but...it's almost like she reminds me of someone." I told her, stopping our walk not far from her home. 

"Any idea who?" Aubree asked me. I shook my head. "I know she's pretty."

"And younger and blonde." I interjected. Aubree for her part gave me a brief nod in recognition but kept going.

"She does so well with the twins.  They love her. Not only that, she cleans the house, makes dinner. We gave her a small raise because she's become more of a maid slash nanny." I know that she and August don't have a lot of money laying around but they are both firm believers in paying a person fairly for the work they do. 

I slowly nodded. Maybe I was just being suspicious because of what happened to Rahmi. Obviously it was a bit of a different scenario.

"Plus, I trust my husband. We've known him since high school. Do you think he would do cheat on me?" Aubree asked me.

For some reason, my mind briefly wondered to Apollo and Naya. How my brother is feeling lonely and like Naya has been putting her career before him and AJ. Though she has been trying to spend more time with them lately. "Not normally, no. He loves you. But sometimes when someone is feeling lonely and...look, just be careful, okay?"

"I don't think there's anything to worry about but I will still keep an eye on her." Aubree told me, she seemed a little annoyed with me but at least she's taking my advice.

[ad_1] When the writer and professor Amitava Kumar invited the book scout Erin Edmison to his reading at McNally Jackson Books’ Seaport location in February, Ms. Edmison penciled it into her calendar and “didn’t think twice about it,” she said, “because I am old, and that’s the way things used to work.”On the night of the reading, she arrived at the bookstore to discover that she needed a $5 ticket to the event, which was sold out. “It didn’t even occur to me,” Ms. Edmison, 48, said.She got in eventually. After a brief wait near the cash register with the other walk-ins, Ms. Edmison was able to stand in the back of the room. “It wasn’t a big deal,” she said. She was happy to see that Mr. Kumar, who is a friend, had a packed house.In the New York of the recent past, readings were events one could wander into, perhaps as a recent college graduate aspiring to be a published writer or simply looking for something to do. But these days, McNally Jackson and a handful of other independent bookstores across the city have begun requiring people to buy tickets or R.S.V.P. to attend readings. Tickets can cost anywhere from a few bucks to some $30, depending on whether you buy the book, too, sometimes rolled into the price.New Yorkers may have gotten used to the idea that nothing in the city is ever really free and that everything is hard to get into. Nonetheless, some have begun to wonder: What changed?“Recently, attendance has been extremely up,” said Mikaela Dery, the director of programming at McNally Jackson, which has multiple locations around the city. “At least half of our events sell out. Often, we have weeks where every single event is sold out. And we have three or four events a week.”The bookstore started its reservation system when it reopened as pandemic pandemic lockdowns eased — as the staff was careful not to overcrowd the room. But McNally Jackson, as well as other bookstores including Books Are Magic and the newer P&T Knitwear, adopted it as a long-term policy as a way to prevent no-shows.Crowded rooms, though, are still a consideration. Readings — and not just at bookstores, but at bars, galleries and parties, too — seem to be more popular than ever.On a Tuesday night in late March, the poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib drew 350 people for a 10 p.m. reading and Q. and A. at the Bell House, a performance venue in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, to promote his new book “There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension.” (The late-night event was added after an earlier 350-person reading with the critic Wesley Morris sold out in a matter of hours.)But you don’t need to be a big name to fill a room. Over the years, less established writers have found large audiences at readings hosted by upstart magazines like The Drift and Cake Zine, which typically ask a few of their contributors to read in the earlier hours of their raucous parties.Some of these readings cost money, too: Drift parties are free for subscribers, but otherwise tickets are $20 at the door and include the latest print issue. To go see someone’s indie rock band play doesn’t feel as of this era.”It used to be that readings were a source of some grumbling, not because people couldn’t get in, but because they didn’t want to go. “You dread going to readings — they can be so boring,” the memoirist Priscilla Gilman, a child of literary New York, said. Lately, she noted, events have been more inventive, with things like food and cocktail pairings.Bars like Pete’s Candy Store, Franklin Park and KGB have hosted readings for years. But chefs and restaurateurs have brought the events to new, upscale spaces, too. Tables of Contents, a reading series founded by the chef Evan Hanczor more than a decade ago, has become a mainstay on the literary event circuit and takes place each month at rotating venues such as the Ace Hotel in Brooklyn. (Some writers reading their work aloud are “not necessarily in it to publish books,” Ms. Mallett said, “or books are just another part of selling a persona — there’s a lot of social media stars.”)But the landscape of readings in New York has always been varied, encapsulating both underground, D.I.Y.-ish performances and more professionalized gatherings.The writer Lucy Sante remembered participating in poetry readings inside church basements and coffee houses as a high school student in the early 1970s. “When I was writing my first book, ‘Low Life,’ I tried out bits reading them at Mona’s bar on Avenue B,” Ms. Sante said.Downtown bars like Sophie’s, Chumley’s and Phebe’s had reading series, as did CBGB, around the same time (on Sunday nights). There were also readings in art galleries, and “readings given under the auspices of downtown magazines like Between C&D,” Ms. Sante said, noting that Between C&D, which was on the Lower East Side, was “like two people operating out of their apartment,” similar to today’s indie publications run by twenty-somethings.In a more cash-flush era of book publishing, in the 1980s and ���90s, releasing a book often involved parties uptown where authors would be feted at editors’ and agents’ apartments, Ms. Gilman, the memoirist, said.
