Over the course of several months you had realized dating was hard.

Dating for you had been a series of terrible dates with average men, whose main goal was to take you home and sleep with you. You weren’t a teenager anymore, and you weren’t looking for dates that seem serious just to end in a casual hookup. And to be honest, it stung every. single. time.

Was your personality not good enough? Did you not make good conversation? Were you only good enough for your body?

It was these questions that plagued you after every date, as you laid in bed wondering when someone will like you for more than just sex.

“I bought you dinner, it’s the least you could do.”

Why? Why do men think they have the right to your body over a twenty dollar meal? (or at all). And why did he have to say it with his hand on your ass? It felt dirty, it felt wrong.

So you decided, you’ll give it one last shot. If this date didn’t work out, you’ll give up trying.

You met James through a mutual friend.

“My friends call me Bucky.”

Bucky.

It was an unusual name, but it seemed to fit him perfectly. His brown hair, scruff, and soft blue eyes had caught your interest almost immediately. You knew this one was gonna hurt.

You had talked for hours over dinner, the longest date you had been on in months. He told you about his time in the military and how he ended up with a bionic arm. He blushed as he spoke about it, like you would hate it. You didn’t. You told him about your childhood, and what you do for work. It was nearly perfect.

Until this moment.

He had walked you to your door, and you were starting to get nervous.

He’s just like all of the others, isn’t he?

He began to lean in, when your hand landed on his chest, keeping his lips from meeting yours.

“I don’t want to hookup with you,” you sighed. Of course this is happening again. You sit there, waiting for the, you owe me this, but it never comes.

“Oh no, I-I wasn’t trying to imply I wanted to sleep with you, doll” his eyes are wide, “I mean, I would love to sleep with you! One day if you would want, just- just not today. I just, I just wanted to kiss you, just to kiss you, no ulterior motive. Oh but no pressure or anything! I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”

So you kiss him. You place your hand at the nape of his neck, pulling him towards your lips as you close your eyes.

It was simple. It was sweetness.

a/n: this is literally awful. also can u tell i’m going through a taylor swift phase? i’ve been trying to get inspiration to write the epilogue to i’m a ghost but i just don’t know what to write. so here’s this piece of shit. 

summary: after a terrible miscommunication, bucky and y/n are left heartbroken. (the story of us - taylor swift) (ew what kind of summary is that)

pairing: bucky barnes x reader

warnings: lil bit of language (from steve nonetheless). mentions of hydra’s booboo ass. lil bit of angst. terrible writing. 

a simple complication, miscommunications lead to fall out

it had been nearly a year, eleven and half months, since you and bucky had gotten together. you have taken it slow since the beginning, knowing his past has affected greatly. you have known for months now that you loved him. he was the best thing to ever happen to you, but you never felt like he was quite ready to hear those three words. but over the past month you have felt it. the conversations, the touches, the kisses. you felt the love in them. you felt like he loved you.

“bucky, we’ve been together for a while now and i can’t imagine my life without you. i love you. i’ve known for months that i love you, but i can’t go another day without saying it. i love you, bucky,” your heart was racing, you know he can hear it, super soldier serum and all that, “can you- um can you say something?”

“i- uh, i can’t, i-i don’t” you could hear a pin drop. you felt your heart in your stomach. he didn’t love you. a year of your life with a man that didn’t love you.

he was out of the door before you could say anything else, leaving you in a sobbing pile on your bed, staring at the door he just walked through.

so many things that i wish you knew, so many walls up, i can’t break through

“how can he stand there like nothings different? like he didn’t rip my heart out of my chest just 48 hours ago? wanda, i don’t understand, i could’ve sworn he loved me.”

just two days after your entire life came crumbling down, tony decided it would be a good idea to have a small get together in the compound. now, you were standing with wanda, across the room from the man you love. you had always come to these together, always finding your seat beside him.

“you guys have been together for a year, any rational person would think that their partner was in love with them after a year. we all thought he loved you. but, letting him see you upset isn’t going to make you feel any better.”

“he just doesn’t seem sad at all. all of these walls he’s built up over the years make it impossible to see how he feels. i just wish i would’ve given myself a little more time with him before i said anything.”

“if you had waited longer, this would’ve hurt much worse. be happy you got out of it when you did,” she was right and you know that, but you didn’t see it as ‘getting out’ you felt like you were being forced out, “it’s his loss, y/n.”

“steve, i don’t know how much longer i can stay here. i can see the wrinkle above her eyebrow, i know she’s sad. i can’t see that.”

bucky loved you. he did. he had known for a while, but he couldn’t love you. you deserved better. you deserved some form of normalcy, and you would never get that from him.

“that’s your own damn fault, buck,” steve wasn’t happy. he loved you like a sister and had warned bucky about hurting you before you had gotten together, “you don’t get to be sad. she told you she loved you and you told her didn’t love her. that’s on you.”

steve loved bucky. they grew up together, they were basically brothers. and steve wasn’t afraid to tell bucky when he was being stupid. he knew bucky’s had a rough life, but it wasn’t an excuse to hurt you.

“if you love her, you need to tell her. you’re gonna lose her, buck. this sadness she’s feeling now won’t last forever, and once she’s over it you guys will be done. for good.”

“y/n don’t freak out, but bucky’s walking over here. do you want me to stay with you or do you want me to leave?”

“y/n, can we talk, please,”

“um, i’m okay wanda you can go,” your voice is small, and it breaks bucky’s heart. over the past year you’d grown out of this shell you had yourself in, and bucky hated when you felt less than anyone.

he held a hand out to you, wanting you to walk with him. you take it, following him onto the balcony on the far side of the room.

“what um, what did you wanna talk about? i’m sorry if i made you feel pressured or anything the other night, i didn’t want you to feel cornered or-“

“stop, please. you didn’t do anything wrong,” he wouldn’t look you in the eye, which scared you more than anything, “i messed up, y/n. i keep letting my past get in the way of my future. you told me you loved me and all i could think about was all of the people i loved that i lost. i can’t lose you too. i thought that maybe if i forced myself not to love you, you’d be safer, from whatever curse this stupid universe had on me.” he had tears in his eyes, the pain behind them was obvious.

“but i can’t keep myself from loving you. i love you, y/n. and that scares the shit out of me. i’ve built these walls around me since hydra that i haven’t been able to break down, but y/n i want you to help me break them down. and i understand if i’m too late and you don’t want me any-“

you were on him in a split second. hands on his cheeks, mouth against his. once he realized what was happening, his shoulders relaxed and his hand found your cheek.

“i love you, bucky. i was hurt, thinking you had just pretended all along, that you didn’t care about me. but i get it now, and it’s okay. you will break down these walls, and i’ll right beside while you do it.”
